In high school? Love to write?

This past year, the Kane County Chronicle opinion page featured two young writers: Kurt Zepeda and Brigid Ackerman.

Kurt, a recent graduate of Marmion Academy in Aurora, regularly wrote a column up until the end of June, when he was set to begin a six-week training period at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

Brigid, who recently graduated from St. Charles East High School, continues to write a column, but her time with us also will soon draw to a close. Her last column is set to run Sept. 25.

Preferred candidates will be juniors or seniors at a local high school this fall who have a strong interest in writing and are able to meet deadlines.

ST. CHARLES – Two downtown St. Charles businesses have been fined for liquor license violations, according to a news release issued by the city of St. Charles.

The Filling Station was cited on July 10 for selling alcoholic beverages outside its licensed premises and/ or allowing the consumption of alcoholic beverages purchased on its premises to be consumed outside its licensed premises, the news release stated.

The business also was cited for failing to have an em-

ployee or agent posted during the required hours at each entrance to the business.

The license holder was required to pay a $1,500 fine and $500 in court costs. In addition, the Filling Station’s liquor license permit will be temporarily suspended for two days, from 12:01 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sept. 13 and 14.

Alibi Bar and Grill was cited June 1 for selling alcoholic beverages outside its licensed premises and/or allowing the consumption of alcoholic beverages purchased on its premises to be consumed outside its licensed premises, according to the release.

ed for allowing a patron to exit its premises while in possession of an alcoholic beverage.

The license holder was required to pay a $1,000 fine and $500 in court costs. Alibi Bar and Grill’s liquor license permit also will be temporarily suspended for two days, from 12:01 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sept. 13 and 14.

“The City Council reserves the right to reduce or revoke late night permits as a result of violations to our city ordinances,” St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said, according to the release. As mayor, Rogina acts as the city’s liquor commissioner.

Creative writing session at Garfield Farm Museum

WHAT: An afternoon of creative writing, led by Crystal Hollis, is set. Elburn man charged in connection with fatal crash Court records say he was drunk while riding motorcycle

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A criminal complaint was filed and an arrest warrant issued for an Elburn man in connection with a June 25 motorcycle crash that resulted in another man’s death, court records show.

On Wednesday, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Timothy B. Corbitt, 55, of the 100 block of Read Street in Elburn, with felony aggravated driving under the influence in a crash that resulted in the death of Steven Wenger, 50, of North Aurora.

The complaint also stated that Corbitt drove his 2004 Harley-Davidson while his blood-alcohol content was more than 0.08 percent.

According to court records, Corbitt also was charged with driving without insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in connection with the crash.

Kane County Circuit Court Judge James Hallock issued the warrant for Corbitt and set his bond at $50,000, with 10 percent, or $5,000, needed for him to be released once the warrant is served, records show.

The charge carries a penalty of three to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000 if he is convicted. Corbitt was not in custody as of Friday, records show.

Wenger and Corbitt were riding motorcycles on Route 64, just west of Meredith Road

in Virgil, when the crash occurred.

Undersheriff Pat Gengler, the Kane County sheriff’s spokesman, said at the time that the motorcyclists were riding together, headed to Chuck’s Bar and Grill, 47W739 Route 64.

He said they were staggered in the lane, and the first motorcycle began to turn into the business but “was essentially T-boned by the second bike.”

Corbitt was treated and released at the scene, police said. Gengler has said neither man was wearing a helmet.

Wenger was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, where he died July 1, officials said.

The crash had been under investigation by sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, officials said.

That is, unless you happen to be a woodlouse spider.

Lately we’ve been seeing and hearing a lot about this common species, no doubt thanks to an abundance of its favored prey, the woodlouse.

With all the rain and generally cool weather we’ve been having, Kane County is lousy with woodlice.

Before we go any further, I should probably explain.

Woodlouse is a generic term that actually encompasses an entire suborder of isopods, Oniscidea, and consists of about 100 species in North America. Woodlice are variously referred to as roly-polies, pillbugs and sowbugs (but actually are more closely related to shrimp than “bugs,” or insects).

At any rate, 2014 is shaping up to be a banner year for the woodlouse. And when the woodlouse is doing well, so, too, is the woodlouse spider, Dysdera crocata.

At first glance, this arachnid looks, well, a wee bit scary. In fact, the genus name Dysdera reportedly is from an ancient Greek word that means “hard to fight against.” The spider’s deep maroon legs and cephalothorax stand in sharp contrast to its grayish-yellow abdomen.

And its fangs – yow! Even on a young specimen they’re hard to ignore.

But when you stop to consider what these mouthparts, also known as chelicerae, are used for, their heft starts to make sense. Roly-polies and sowbugs are covered with a tough exoskeleton that protects them like a suit of armor. (As an aside, pillbugs belong to the family Armadillidiidae, a not-so-thinly veiled reference to another armored creature, the armadillo.)

When your prey is encased

That’s right, even though we were pretty sure Brianne had found a woodlouse spider, we couldn’t be absolutely sure right away. There’s another group of spiders, the genus Trachelas, that look very similar to Dysdera. However, while Trachelas has eight eyes, Dysdera has only six – a characteristic that is somewhat unusual in our region. With this in mind, we proceeded to the next step in our study: Take an extremely close look at the spider’s frontal region.

With a lot of contorting, mostly on our part but a little bit by the spider, too, we were able to count six, and only six, eyes, thus confirming the ID. In the process, we also learned another very important detail: A 10-times magnification hand lens will make those chelicerae appear EVEN BIGGER. Throughout the identification exercise, the spider continually displayed its extreme mobility – a trait that serves it well on its happy hunting grounds. The woodlouse spider captures its prey not with webs, but rather by ambush.

It waits quietly inside a silken lair until supper strolls near, then, BAM! It pounces, pierces and feeds.

The city’s mosquito abatement contractor will be spraying an application of insecticide citywide from 10 p.m. today to 2 a.m. Sunday.

GENEVA – After the fourth time police were called to his home for a disturbance, a Geneva man faces felony charges of filing a false police report, according to reports.

William J. Taber, 43, of the 400 block of North Second Street, Geneva, was charged Aug. 16 with felony disorderly conduct. Police said he reported a crime was committed when there were no grounds to believe it.

Taber is being held in the Kane County Jail on $7,500 bond and is scheduled for a court hearing Sept. 26. If convicted, he could be punished by one to three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.

According to police reports, police were called to a roommate disturbance at the North Second Street address involving Taber at 7:24 p.m.

Police were called back at 7:57 p.m. Taber claimed someone smoked marijuana at the house, but he kept changing the date of the violation. Police found no evidence of marijuana in the house.

Police returned to the house at 8:53 p.m. because someone tried to bring food to Taber while he was in the driveway and he threw it at the person, then claimed he was threatened, reports state.

Police returned at 9:40 p.m. because Taber claimed another person threatened him with a large green knife, then made racial slurs, according to reports. Police searched the person Taber claimed had a knife, found no knife, then charged Taber with making a false police report.

Taber, identified in court records previously as home-

less, has been charged with other offenses, all misdemeanors.

He was charged Feb. 26 with misdemeanor disorderly conduct when he had a tantrum after he was told he could not use the office phone at the train depot, according to reports. Taber pleaded guilty and received an 11-month conditional discharge.

He was charged April 23 with criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and two counts of aggravated assault on security guards at Delnor Hospital, 300 S. Randall Road. Court records show Tabor pleaded guilty, received a fine and a conditional discharge from jail with conditions requiring him to have no further criminal violations.

Records show Taber notified the court of his new address on the 400 block of North Second Street in Geneva on Aug. 1.

Taber was charged with criminal trespass to land Oct. 28, 2013, when, according to reports, he came to the Geneva Police Department, 20 Police Plaza, at 6:25 a.m. yelling and banging on the window, alarming and disturbing records clerks. Records show he was not prosecuted but was referred for services.

And on May 10, 2012, he was charged with disorderly conduct for an incident in which, court records show, he was yelling and shouting at a woman after she told him he was not welcome at the Hampton Inn, 2875 Foxfield Road, St. Charles.

Taber pleaded guilty and was given court supervision.

The case is still pending.

Taber is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 18 for a status hearing, records show.

Norman Francis McCrimmon, 83, of Batavia passed away suddenly Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva. He was born February 12, 1931, in Aurora, IL the son of Norman and Mary (nee Rudman) McCrimmon. He was united in marriage to Joan Behrens September 29, 1956, in Elgin, IL. Norm served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Following his service time he began his fulfilling 50 year career as a Barber. He owned and operated the Prairie Barber Shop in Aurora. Norm had a zest for life; he loved snow skiing, and skate boarding which he could be found doing well into his seventies.

He is survived by his wife Joan; two daughters, Paula (Donald) McPhee, of Salida, CO, and Pam (Scott) Barry of Batavia; four grandchildren, Jesse Miller, Jacquelene, Lauren and Carman Barry; a brother, Russell (Ann) McCrimmon.

He is preceded in death by his son Bruce McCrimmon.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Despite Foltos Tonsorial Parlor’s decades of history in downtown Batavia, owner Craig Foltos said it was a nationwide tragedy that showed him just how important his business was to the community.

On Sept. 11, 2001, “a lot of people came in just to know it was going to be OK,” he said.

The community’s response was, he said, “really an indication what small businesses can be in communities.”

Foltos Tonsorial Parlor is among the local businesses that have served

generations of customers. That’s no small feat considering the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy has reported that about half of all new businesses survive five years, and about one-third make it to the 10-year milestone.

Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines noted how the city has several longtime businesses, including Riley Drug Store, The Little Traveler and Geneva Cleaners.

Qualities common of long-lasting shops are those that everybody looks for, she said: quality service, community involvement, giving back to the community, finding the right location

A NEED TO EVOLVE Business owners who have reached significant milestones credited their longevity to reacting and adapting to changes around them while maintaining their business’ core values.

Ream’s Elburn Market, for example, has evolved as Kane County changed. Once a shop that provided custom meat processing for farmers, the North Main Street staple has experimented with a restaurant and is now known as a specialized meat market, featuring award-winning sausages and smoked meats.

A seemingly never-ending stream of customers flowed through the 110-year-old storefront on a late sunny afternoon last month, just hours before the market would close for the day.

Amid the bustle, Randy Ream – who owns the store with his wife, Janelle – said his father would keep the shop open until 10 p.m. two nights a week to cater to farmers.

When Jewel-Osco moved to Elburn, the Reams added Sundays to their store’s hours to keep up with the competition, they said.

“I don’t take anything for granted,” Janelle Ream said.

That’s a lesson the Blue Goose Market in St. Charles has learned. Established in 1928 by Paul Lencioni’s great-grandmother, the Blue Goose experienced a period in the mid-1900s where it was the city’s central grocery source, Lencioni said.

As the community grew, he said, the Blue Goose assumed it would retain that status.

“We didn’t meet all the new people,” said Lencioni, president and general manager of Blue Goose.

With even more competition now, Lencioni said the Blue Goose strives to do things of value and to find out what customers want.

“We know how to take care of people,” he said.

But, he noted, the store’s long history can work against it when customers only know it as it was – not as it is now.

Somehow, he said, it got the reputation as a specialty store, when it actually sells everyday groceries, such as bananas, every day.

Campton Hills resident Donna Chipp said she didn’t set out to make a “ton of money” when she opened a jewelry store in downtown St. Charles in 2009.

She just wanted to generate enough to pay for expenses and to make a salary, she said.

But, she said, it “never quite got there.”

Chipp closed Donna’s Jewelry Box in spring 2013.

Hers is an experience shared by many small business owners. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy, about half of new businesses survive five years, and about one-third make it to 10 years.

Consider, for example, the percentage of Illinois businesses that opened in 2002, 2007 and 2010 that survived until 2012: 35.4, 47.8 and 67.6, respectively, according to the SBA. The administration reported similar survival rates were experienced nationwide.

Rob Mondi – who in 2011 opened the short-lived hot dog joint Slider Frank’s in eastern St. Charles – said a business’ failure can usually be credited to the staff, the product or the money.

In the case of Slider Frank’s, he said, the shop was doing great until his employees – his sons and their friends – had to start the school year. Their replacements weren’t up to par, he said, calling food service an art.

“Everyone thinks they can do it, but it’s not easy,” Mondi said.

Meanwhile, Mondi was working full time as a financial adviser, so his time at the eatery was limited, he said.

“A small business is not an investment,” Mondi said.

“It’s a career. It’s a lifestyle. … They don’t run them-

selves.”

In comparison, Chipp described her work with Donna’s Jewelry Box as “virtually a 24-hour-a-day job,” as she was a one-man shop. She handled the designing and manufacturing of the products, as well as marketing, she said, adding she never was a very good accountant.

Deciding to close was difficult, Chipp said.

“It was hard in the sense you put so much work into it,” she said. “I enjoyed it tremendously.”

But, she said, rent was going up, and sales were going down.

“I just couldn’t keep going,” Chipp said of the $2,100 in monthly rent and $1,300 in monthly sales. “I needed about $3,000 in sales to break even.”

Craig Foltos of Foltos Tonsorial Parlor in Batavia said he feels sorry for shuttered businesses that have a sign in the window indicating they lost their lease. His business, which his father started, is in a building he owns. “[My father] understood the concept of owning your own building controls your destiny a little more,” he said.

In retrospect, Chipp said she wishes she researched more locations and started somewhere more shopper friendly. But she also acknowledged that a bad economy also played a role in her fledgling business.

“People need to put food on the table,” she said. “Jewelry wasn’t a needed item.”

Although closed in St. Charles, Chipp’s jewelry continues to have a presence in the Tri-Cities. She rents space, along with other jewelers, from Crystalline Velvet on Geneva’s Third Street.

Chipp said that business owner has a better business plan than she did.

“I wish I had thought of it,” she said. “I very naively jumped into opening a store.”

Batavia School Board to vote on 3-year teachers contract

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia teachers have agreed to a new threeyear contract with Batavia School District 101.

The Batavia Education Association recently voted to accept the agreement. The Batavia School Board is set to discuss the agreement Tuesday at a special meeting.

As part of the agreement, Batavia teachers would receive a 3.72 percent salary increase in the first year of the

contract, a 2.25 percent salary increase the second year and a 1.6 percent salary increase the third year, Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn said.

The BEA represents more than 400 employees.

Monn said he was pleased with the new agreement, noting that it covers multiple years. BEA’s two-year agreement with the district had expired June 30.

“We started meeting with the BEA in late April,” Monn said. “We reached a tentative

agreement on Aug. 13, the day before teachers came back from summer break.”

Board members recently approved a new four-year contract with district support staff members. The contract with the Batavia Educational Support Professional Association expired June 30.

The new contract includes a 65-cent hourly increase for support staff in the 2014-15 school year, with a future hourly increase tied to the consumer price index used in the district’s tax levy.

school board. Though Sorrick doesn’t name the “certain board member” in the letter, a board member, Tony Valente, has said he believed Sorrick resigned because of what Valente said at the meeting.

Sorrick started the letter by writing that he could not sleep Ken Sorrick the night after the meeting, and “ ... for personal reasons, I just can’t take this job.”

“Having a board member walk out of an executive session when we are talking about the superintendent search and accusing us of unethical behavior is not the way I want to start a job,” Sorrick wrote. “I understand that he is just one board member, but he is not interested in advancing the educational process ... .” He wrote that the board member “is interested in sabotaging the organization. I do not want to work in such a hostile environment.”

Valente said the resignation letter was “something that’s unheard of.”

“I’ve never, ever, given a letter like that to anybody when I’ve resigned,” Valente said.

MAPLE PARK – In a resignation letter to the president of the Kaneland school board, former interim Superintendent Ken Sorrick explained why he left the job after one day, writing that “ ... a certain board member disrespects you, disrespects the superintendent, disrespects the assistant superintendent, disrespected your union representative and disrespected me ... .”

Sorrick was introduced this week at a Kaneland School District 302 Board meeting at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove. He was named the interim superintendent, as Superintendent Jeff Schuler has left to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200.

A meeting is set for 6 p.m.

Tuesday at the district’s offices near Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park, to accept Sorrick’s resignation, with the intention of naming a new interim superintendent. Patrick Crimmins, the vice chairman of the Kaneland Citizens Advisory Committee, wrote in an email that he hopes the board ultimately will turn its focus to three key issues: the superintendent search, securing a new teachers contract and a pending strategic plan.

“All of these issues will affect the children,” Crimmins wrote. “Their cause should be the only concern.”

Crimmins called the situation “a mess all around.” He wrote that Sorrick could have found a way to work through the perceived issues, especially with compensation of $90,000 for 100 days of work. He also wanted to know whether the “current dysfunction of the board” had been discussed with Sorrick before he accepted the job. He also wrote that Sorrick should have asked about the state of the board before accepting the position.

At the recent meeting, Valente brought up the 100 days that Sorrick would be available and criticized the plan that Sorrick would complete the 100 days by working a full schedule early. Sorrick wrote that it was upsetting that Valente brought that up at the meeting.

“The media should have been talking to Jeff [Schuler] on all the good things he did for the district,” Sorrick wrote.

“This was his last board meeting, and in all my life I have never seen a board member treat a superintendent with so much disrespect.”

Schools mull extending TIF

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members want to know more about why the city is asking for an extension of its downtown tax increment financing district 3.

Batavia TIF 3 was created in 2004 and comprises much of the downtown Batavia area south of Wilson Street, along with certain parcels to the north, district officials told school board members.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

In a letter to Batavia

School Board President Cathy Dremel, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke wrote that the city wants to extend the life of the TIF district by another 12 years. The current expiration date of 2027 would be extended to 2039.

In order for the state legislature to conJeff Schielke sider an extension request, it Batavia requires letters mayor of support from all taxing bodies within the TIF, including Batavia School District 101, Schielke wrote in the letter.

The city wants to submit the request to state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, by

mid-October, Schielke said.

“We feel that an extension is warranted at this time,” Schielke wrote in the letter.

“The downturn of the economy has been a significant damper for new development and redevelopment since 2007. The past seven years have seen little new redevelopment or redevelopment in TIF 3 outside [of] the reconstructed McDonald’s. This has caused a loss of new increment generation that covers a third of the life of TIF 3.”

However, Schielke said the city within the past two years has seen renewed interest in a number of projects in the downtown area, including the Walgreens project, the First Baptist Church site and the quarry on South River Street.

“The only way we can see substantive new development happening in the near term is by extending TIF 3 an additional 12 years to expire in 2039,” Schielke wrote in the

letter.

Batavia School Board member Melanie Impastato questioned the request.

“I would need to know why they need to extend it,” Impastato said. “I don’t see a long-term plan.”

Batavia School District Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn told school board members the district would still receive the taxes on the base equalized assessed value of $11.2 million for the entire life of the TIF, however, an extension would mean that the incremental EAV would not come back on the tax rolls as new construction for an additional 12 years.

“At current rates, this would mean losing the $66,000 of increment for an additional 12 years, though rates and inflation make comparing numbers difficult so far out,” Monn said in a memo to school board members.

Marklund warns of solicitor scam NORTH AURORA – Marklund is warning area residents to beware of a scam that involves door-to-door solicitors requesting donations to cover the costs of repairs at its campus.

Marklund is a nonprofit agency serving adults and children with severe developmental disabilities. In a news release, Marklund officials said that people have been targeting North Aurora neighborhoods, saying they were representing Marklund in so-

liciting donations to help pay for repairs for the facility after it had been damaged by severe weather.

One resident told Marklund officials that late Tuesday afternoon, a man approximately 70 years old rang her doorbell, even though she is on North Aurora’s “No Solicitation” list and has “No Soliciting” signs on her door. The man didn’t have any identification around his neck but had a clipboard with a listing of last names of people in the neighborhood.

“He said he was from Marklund, asked me if I ever

heard of Marklund, and that he was asking for donations for weather damage to the building from this past winter,” the resident told Marklund officials.

The resident did not give money but found out later that a neighbor had.

“We are disappointed to hear the people are using Marklund’s name and good reputation for their own benefit,” Marklund CEO Gil Fonger said, according to the release.

“It’s unfortunate because people who do end up giving money to this person or these people believe it is going to help the children and adults with profound disabilities whom we serve, and of course, it’s not.”

NBA, NFL should stop forcing athletes to stay in college BLOOMBERG NEWS As the college football season kicks off, the question of whether college athletes should be treated as professionals hangs in the air. Yet one issue has been oddly absent from the debate: the age restrictions the National Football League and National Basketball Association place on their players.

Almost no other profession prohibits child prodigies from being paid for their skills.

An 18-year-old can become a professional doctor or lawyer – or a shortstop or goalie – but not a point guard or linebacker, at least not in the NBA and NFL. The two leagues have sealed off their labor markets to anyone under the ages of 19 and 21, respectively.

The leagues cling to the fiction that these prohibitions are in the interest of the young men. But the rule costs many young men millions of dollars – and exploits the educational institutions where they play.

The leagues have basically outsourced their minor-league systems to colleges, which spend hundreds of millions developing talent and separating the wheat from the chaff.

If college players sustain career-ending injuries before they make a nickel, that’s their tough luck. Last year the best defensive player in college football, the University of South Carolina’s 20-year-old Jadeveon Clowney, took out an insurance policy on future earnings because he was barred from entering the NFL and understood the financial risks of getting hurt during his third year of college.

The vast majority of collegiate athletes will never play professionally, of course, and even most elite athletes need more time to develop their

skills before going pro. But not all. Before the NBA increased its minimum age to 19, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett all had immediate success as 18-year-old rookies and have long been among the best players in the NBA. The players’ union was wrong to accept the higher age restriction and should resist any push by new NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to raise it further. Instead, the union should insist that the NBA put more money into its development league to make it a more attractive alternative to high school players with no interest in college.

The NFL has no developmental league, but an independent league (FXFL) is beginning this fall in four cities and could grow into the minor league system the NFL needs. Most 18-year-olds are not ready to play for a college football team, no less a professional team, but a few may be – and others are ready at 19 or 20.

It may well be that most 18-year-olds are better off going to college, even if they don’t end up earning diploma. But the choice should be theirs to make. An 18-year-old who has the talent to work for a professional sports team should be treated no differently from one who has the talent to work for a technology company. The decision of whether to attend college – and for how long – should be the individual’s.

Giving athletes that choice would not end the debate over whether college athletes should be paid, but it would help temper the criticism that they are being exploited. The NCAA has thus far borne the brunt of that criticism, but the NBA and NFL have some culpability, too.

Entrepreneurship requires careful planning, execution Starting a business. Running a business. Staying in business.

It’s not necessarily easy to do. In fact, research shows the odds can be stacked against small businesses that are just starting out.

Television shows like “Shark Tank” and “The Profit” spotlight the triumphs and tribulations of those who are trying to make it in today’s business world.

But right here at home in Kane County, entrepreneurs have their own stories to tell.

Such stories were the subject of this week’s Kane County Chronicle Closer Look series. The final part of that series appears in today’s paper.

Some common themes can be found among the stories that local business owners shared for the series

about their entrepreneurial endeavors. Among them were the importance of getting those early details right, putting in the required work, being able to evolve and how partnering with others in the community can strengthen one’s business.

Those are just some of the characteristics that can help a small business survive – especially in the face of daunting statistics.

As was reported in our Closer Look series, only about half of new small businesses make it to the five-year point, and about one-third of such businesses make it to the 10-year point, according to the U.S. Small Business Association.

But, of course, many businesses do go on to celebrate decades of success.

And many entrepreneurs who have to close a business

eventually do open others.

What can be done to ensure the survival of a business?

In addition to the 10 tips from the SBA that ran with the first part of the Closer Look series, those looking to start or maintain a business should do research on the specific field they want to enter – or already are in – and stay on top of trends.

They also can talk to other entrepreneurs about what has – or hasn’t – worked for their business. And they can contact local chambers of commerce and community colleges about programs they offer to assist local business owners.

On the other end of the spectrum, consumers can make it a point to shop local to help the businesses in their community not only stay afloat, but thrive.

SOUND OFF Have you noticed that people in the Sound Off, all they do is complain. Yes, the taxes are high, but what are you going to do? If you own property, real estate taxes are high.

Also, about complaining about anything you have to fix around the house. You have to hire somebody. It’s very pricey.

That’s another issue. Yes, you have real estate taxes. But if you don’t own a property and rent, what does that cost you? They can just tell you to move out, like they did to my godmother.

Owning or not owning, that’s all there is.

Stop the foolishness

A great place to eat I would like to comment on the Riverview Restaurant in Montgomery. I want to comment on the Riverview Restaurant. It’s a great place to eat. There is a great wait staff. If you haven’t tried the Riverview Restaurant there, you are missing out. They have great food and a great wait staff.

It’s a great place to eat. It’s a friendly atmosphere. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and efficient. Everyone should try the Riverview Restaurant in Montgomery.

Leave a tip I wanted to say that I visit Delnor Hospital about three or four times a month. I use that

Lack of fortitude Are you kidding me? Two St. Charles [middle] schools closed on Monday because it was too warm? We went to grade school, junior high, high school and college with no air conditioning, and survived. What kind of entitlement and lack of fortitude are we teaching these kids? Most of them probably went out to play after being sent home. Are you kidding me?

Good luck What was the Batavia School District thinking? They have a whole building by the football field that will cost $130,000 to bring up to standards, but they want to rent a building for $12,000 a month, or $144,000 a year. What makes more sense – repair the building or spend $144,000? They want a bond issue? Good luck.

I’m calling regarding the tax situation in St. Charles. I would say enough is enough. It is unbelievable about how little the city is concerned about senior citizens. If you are over 60 or over 80 or whatever, there is no relief.

The school board is putting the taxes up and up and up. But they are wasting the money left and right. But to give the people under water, the people who are paying more on taxes and fees than on their mortgages, that has to stop. We cannot afford to drive these people out.

Wake up, city hall. Don’t waste the money. It is time to stop the foolishness.

There’s usually a nice line of people waiting to get their cars.

Those guys run back and forth real fast. They don’t walk. They give a good service. I never see nobody tip those valet service.

My husband tips them a dollar or two. We’re senior citizens, and if we can afford it, I’m sure others can afford it.

Those guys are working off their tips, just like a waitress works off their tips. It’s how they make a living. It would be nice if people would tip those valet drivers at Delnor Hospital.

Even a dollar would help. Two dollars would be better. If they just tip them a dollar, it would be appreciated by them, I’m sure. Me and my husband are the only ones who ever tip. I never see nobody tip those guys except us. Maybe they can think about tipping the valet drivers.

That’s how they make their living.

You get very efficient service.

There are usually one or two guys, and they give excellent, efficient service. You don’t have to wait long. You might have a line once in a while because a lot of people go over there at Delnor. And they give excellent service. They are efficient. It would be nice for people to think about leaving them a tip. Even a dollar would help. They are very efficient, young gentlemen.

For the second straight year, lightning rumbled in and ruined opening night of the high school football season around the Tri-Cities.

St. Charles North-Elk Grove, St. Charles East-South Elgin, Geneva-West Aurora, Batavia-Oswego and Kaneland-Brooks are among the Friday night games that were pushed to Saturday because of the lingering lightning.

Didier, a senior, was in the running to be North’s starting quarterback, but North coach

Rob Pomazak opted to go with junior Kyle Novotney. Didier still found a way to make his presence felt, returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown and recovering a fumble in the first quarter as North will take a 6-0 lead into today’s resumption at the beginning of the second quarter.

“Nate was told that he wasn’t going to be the starting quarterback on Monday,” Pomazak said. “Kyle [Novotney] did a great job of beating him out. Both of those kids competed. [Didier] took the first kick and he made the most of it, which is pretty exciting. He deserves that. He deserves that moment.”

Aurora Christian and Wheaton Academy managed season-opening home victories, while Marmion, St. Fran-

cis and Aurora Central Catholic were victorious on the road, with the Spartans’ and Chargers’ triumphs coming against Wisconsin opponents north of the border.

But in the Tri-Cities, there was no opening night closure.

The North Stars and Grenadiers also had their 2013 opener against each other postponed a day by lightning, with the main differences being this year’s game is in St. Charles and already had begun.

Football being the collision-driven sport that it is, playing part of a game and then suiting up less than 24 hours later poses concerns.

“They’re going to feel like they played a full quarter of football,” Pomazak said of the players. “They’re going to be

sore. We’ve got to be diligent in getting them to recover as quickly as they can. Football’s not a game that you can take breaks like that, but our kids are well conditioned. They’re strong individuals. I think they’ll bounce back OK.” Earlier in the week, Batavia coach Dennis Piron mentioned the possibility of storms in the forecast and his hopes for them to stay far away from Bulldog Stadium.

Still, once Friday rolled around, the anticipation of the Bulldogs’ first game since winning the 2013 Class 6A state title trumped any need to obsess over radar or weather reports.

“I just thought, ‘We’ll be fine,’ ” Piron said. “But God dang, the lightning.”

Aurora Central Catholic ‘glad we earned’ opening win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WAUWATOSA, Wis. – A would-be drive home from Bob Stewart Field transformed into a two-hour plus commute from suburban Milwaukee for the Aurora Central Catholic football team.

As they boarded the bus around 10:15 p.m. Friday, the Chargers didn’t seem to mind.

ACC defeated Wauwatosa East, 21-7, in its season opener, a replacement game scheduled on the fly earlier this month.

“We were happy to get a game in, especially knowing it was about to be a forfeit win,” Chargers coach Brian Casey said. “We’re glad we earned

it.”

Casey and ACC athletic director Sean Bieterman scrambled to find an opponent just a few days ago upon learning the Chargers’ original Week 1 foe, Tilden, had only six players this season and would not field a team.

Instead of hosting Tilden for a Saturday matinee, the Chargers ventured into Wisconsin. After visiting Lisle and Chicago Christian in Weeks 2 and 3, respectively, ACC now will play its hope opener against Guerin Sept.

Cougars keep rolling, head for home CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Cougars became the first team in franchise history to reach 90 victories Friday, defeating Cedar Rapids, 6-1, in a game called in the sixth inning because of rain.

The Cougars (45-22 second half, 90-47 overall) scored six unanswered runs to maintain their hold on the best record in minor league baseball.

Trey Martin and Jeimer Candelario each homered in the fifth inning.

The Cougars will return home to begin a regular-season ending, three-game series against Peoria that starts at 6:30 p.m. today.

Kane County will open the Midwest League playoffs on the road – likely at Wisconsin – Wednesday before playing its first home playoff game Thursday.

BATAVIA – Batavia public address announcer Rudy Dubis heaped the ultimate modifier onto his familiar pregame salutation Friday.

“Welcome to Batavia,” he began, “HOME OF THE 6A STATE CHAMPION BATTLIN’ BULLDOGS!” Batavia’s football title defense opened to a raucous, capacity crowd, and fans prepared to settle in for what had the makings of an early-season classic against Oswego.

Then, with the teams tied at 7-all and 4:30 remaining in the first quarter, Dubis grabbed the mic again and sounded like he rarely does: subdued. Lightning was in the area. Fans had to evacuate Bulldog Stadium for a delay.

A little over an hour later, the game officially was postponed until 6 p.m. today after an attempted Friday restart.

“We had a great crowd.

Great atmosphere. You sensed

it was going to be an unbelievably exciting, like a memorable game,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said. “And I was talking to their coach, too. We were both so pumped about the atmosphere, the kids and the level of play.

“Two very well-prepared, well-coached programs, you could tell. So we’re very disappointed we didn’t get the game in, but we’re going to come back tomorrow, just like last year and play a [heck] of a game.”

It might not have served as instant solace for Batavia backers, but the fact is the team won a state title the last time weather postponed its season opener. The Bulldogs defeated Glenbard North – like Oswego a large-school power – on the first Saturday of the 2013 season.

The spectators who chose not to retreat to their cars after the delay was announced got reacquainted in the Batavia fieldhouse, which held great volumes of humidity and fan anticipation. Soon,

The Eagles soared over visiting Senn, 42-6, on Friday in a season opener that included a running clock from the second quarter on.

Aurora Christian quarterback Austin Bray needed just four plays on the first drive of the game to find the end zone, connecting with running back Nick Edlund for a 20-yard touchdown.

It was the first of four touchdowns between the duo on the evening as the Eagles cruised to a 35-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Edlund, a transfer from St. Charles North, said the chemistry he had with Bray was the result of perfecting routes in practice.

“We really work hard in practice on the timing of routes and are always talking about what we can do better with our timing,” Edlund said. “How can I run the routes better to make sure he sees me? We just connected tonight and the line held their blocks. It all worked out

Bray was excited to put the team’s offseason preparation in motion.

“It felt great to finally put all of our hard work to use and show it on out the field,” he said. “The whole offseason working with those guys, our chemistry has been so good and it showed on the field.”

Junior wideout Jacolby Maxwell made quite an impression in his first game for the Eagles, reeling in a team-high 130

yards and two touchdowns off nine receptions.

“I thought Jacolby has a fantastic night,” Beebe said. “He’s waited two years to play in this game and for me personally it was really good to see him finally get to play.”

Like his teammates, Maxwell attributed his personal success to the group chemistry gained on the practice field, but also cited tackling as an issue to work on for the coming weeks.

“We need to improve on our tackling and make sure we know what we’re doing on every play,” Maxwell said. “Other than that, we played really well.”

All that added up to a 47-0 win for the Warriors in a game played in just two hours because of a running clock.

“It was so different coming out on the field tonight and playing under those lights tonight,” Meade said. “It was just really special. It was just so exciting. We really felt the energy the fans provided for

us. For me, our [offensive line] did such a great job for us opening up holes for me to run through. All the credit goes to them.”

The Warriors made it 21-0 with 59 seconds left in the first quarter when starting quarterback David Thrasher hooked up with senior receiver Sam Martinez for a 5-yard TD pass followed by a Cote conversion.

Wheaton Academy added two more scores in the second quarter on a 34-yd TD pass from Thrasher to Martinez with 11:03 left until halftime for the 28-0 lead. The Warriors’

lead stretched to 35-0 when senior running back Mike Silfugaian scored off a 27-yard touchdown run.

The Warriors scored one touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters to polish off their first win of the season, as they try to bounce back from a 4-5 season in 2013.

“A lot of people were expecting a close game tonight,” Warriors sophomore offensive lineman Tom Holmberg said.

“Our offensive line really executed their blocks really well tonight. We have turned over a new leaf I think with this win.”

Drew Hare, Matt McIntosh and Aurora Christian graduate Anthony Maddie all received playing time in the Huskies’ 55-3 victory over Presbyterian on Thursday. Here’s a breakdown from the three quarterbacks’ performances: Drew Hare 8 for 13, 100 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs Matt McIntosh 10 for 14, 87 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs Anthony Maddie 1 for 4, 24 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs on three scoring drives in the first quarter. Hare took over in the second quarter and was under center for five drives, with his final pass a 49-yard touchdown to Juwan Brescacin. Maddie got into the game after it was out of hand.

McIntosh was impressive, going 10 of 14 for 87 yards and a touchdown – a 39-yarder to senior receiver Da’Ron Brown.

“It felt great,” McIntosh said. “Coach (Bob) Cole had a great call, the offensive line gave me a great pocket and

Hare struggled at first, but ended up with a good performance, going 8 of 13 for 100 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 59 yards. Maddie played with the backups, and threw only four passes, completing one for 24 yards.

The question is: How much longer will the competition last? Carey said he wanted to play one quarterback when the battle began at the beginning of spring practice.

Carey wouldn’t rule out playing multiple quarterbacks Sept. 6 against Northwestern.

“Right now, it’s tough to argue with what we just did,” Carey said. “So you make the case that way, but then you watch film, you may make a case another way. We’ll see.”

It’s possible the public won’t know the starter until whoever it is takes the first NIU snap at Ryan Field next weekend.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois quarterbacks Matt McIntosh, Anthony Maddie and Drew Hare spent spring practice and fall camp battling for the Huskies’ starting job.

The competition extended into Thursday night’s season opener against Presbyterian, as each quarterback got playing time.

After the 55-3 win against the struggling Football Championship Subdivision school, NIU coach Rod Carey said he liked what he saw from all three.

“I’m going to have to go back and look at [the film]. My gut right now is that they all three played really well, but these two (Hare and McIntosh) played really well in the first half, and then Maddie went in there and did some really good things as well,” Carey said after the game Thursday night.

“Right now, it’s tough to argue against what we just did, but you may watch the film and see something else.”

Bears waive Lynch, cut four more

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com The Bears waived running back and former Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch on Friday and reportedly gave Lynch no assurance of making the practice squad, which they can form starting Sunday.

The 10-man practice squad is Lynch’s best shot in the NFL, and the Bears likely don’t have to worry about another team claiming Lynch off waivers before then.

Lynch should pay attention to what happens with fellow undrafted rookie running back Senorise Perry, who may make the 53-man roster, but if not, would also be a practice squad candidate. If the Bears signed Perry to the practice squad, they would be designating two spots for running backs if they also included Lynch.

Lynch played only seven snaps on offense in Thursday’s final preseason game against the Browns in Cleveland and had six carries for 18 yards, with a long of 8 yards.

The Bears gave Lynch significant special teams reps – 16 – in punt coverage and on the kickoff return team.

“I got a lot of reps on special teams,” Lynch said after Thursday’s loss in Cleveland.

“It’s something new to me; that was the second time I got reps on special teams in the preseason. I thought I did well.”

In the preseason opener against the Eagles, Lynch had

The 6-foot-9, 315-pounder joined the Bears during camp July 31, and he worked as the second-team right tackle while Michael Ola moved up to first team when Jordan Mills and Eben Britton nursing injuries. Edwards signed with the Bears on June 3 to join the return competition on special teams, but he was always buried on the depth chart. In the preseason, Edwards had four catches for 22 yards and did not have a return.

Mastrud joined the team after minicamp, and the former Raider and Dolphin was the No. 4 tight end after Zach Miller’s foot injury. He had nine catches for 51 yards in the preseason and led skill players with 38 snaps against the Browns.

What kind of team do you envision being this year? What do you see as some potential strengths?

I see us as a team that wins but also loses gracefully as a team and sticks together no matter what.

WHEATON ACADEMY’S ALECIA FUNK What’s going through your mind late in a tense game like Game 3 [against Batavia] in crunch time?

Well, part of it is keeping your mind focused in the hardest minutes when you’re distracted. There are so many fans here. Just stay focused on who we’re playing for and doing our job of staying focused.

Leading into the season, what has [coach D.A. Nichols’] points of emphasis been with you guys?

Team unification is a big thing and then also serve-receive, obviously, and just getting great passes, and the difference between transition and tempo and [playing at] the right speed out on the court.

What do you anticipate being the biggest challenges with getting used to varsity play? ... Probably just the speed and [connecting] with all my hitters is the biggest thing.

WEEKEND LIFE Many hands make light work and happy horses You should see my toilets. And yet, there I was, helping to muck out the stalls at Casey’s Safe Haven alongside my dear daughter last Sunday morning.

Holly has a particular fondness for animals in need, so when we heard about Casey’s, a nonprofit holistic horse rescue located at Field of Dreams Farm in Elburn, we knew we had to check it out. I’m so glad we did.

There’s just something about this place and these passionate people, and the 14 beautiful creatures they currently serve, many of which suffered a world of pain before finding safety and solace here. Some may eventually go on to find their “forever” homes through adoption, but the rest will live out their days at Casey’s.

The equine rescue accepts abused and neglected horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules from animal control facilities and pony ride operations and takes in others retired from lesson programs and other work.

Some are relinquished by loving owners who find themselves unable to care for their friend. Named after founder Sue Balla’s best friend of 26 years, a malnourished thoroughbred named Casey that she rescued from a slaughterhouse bin in 1981, Casey’s is currently home to several horses, a small herd of retired, formerly malnourished and ailing pony-ride ponies, a couple of sweet mouser barn-kitties, and plucky Petunia, an adorable donkey-turned pony wrangler.

Young Petunia, their most notorious resident (she even has her own Facebook page!), actually brays and rounds up the elderly ponies whenever coyotes threaten. Holly and I got to meet Petunia and her buddies on our first visit to the barn. When I realized that the sky was about to open up I said, “Hey, hook us up with some boots (I’d been wearing sandals – duh! – and Holly was sporting her cute new mintgreen sneakers), and we’ll help you to get them (the horses) in.”

What fun! We just barely pulled it off, too, before thunder and lightning lit up the sky.

After vigorously laboring to clean the stalls for an hour or so the next morning, Holly announced, “I like this (work) better than (soccer) Coach Alex’s conditioning!” Doing something purposeful to help another creature truly is so gratifying, and Balla and her team could always use more help.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose sor a pony? Fundraise? A regular crop of volunteers along with successful fundraising efforts are critical to keeping Casey’s afloat, since the rescue is completely dependent upon donations.

Casey’s third annual “Galloping to the Rescue” benefit will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.

“If we don’t [raise the funds], we close,” Balla said. It’s that simple. The benefit, which will feature raffles, a silent auction, music, dinner, drinks and photo-ops with Petunia, will be hosted once again by Marc and Luis Bernard at their home, Rustic Road Farm, just

down the road apiece from Casey’s.

Tickets are available until Sept. 13.

The folks at Dave’s Slow Cook BBQ will provide pulled pork and chicken, potato salad, coleslaw and vegan-approved chili (no offense to the vegans out there but I’m already plotting to dunk some of the beautiful barbecue into that yummy chili!), and are even bringing along an artisan pizza-maker so they can prepare traditional and gluten-free pizzas on the spot.

I hear, too, that another culinary wizard plans to provide sweets to finish the meal. Vegan peanut-butter cups, I’m told. (Heck, I don’t care if they’re vegan or not, I’ve never met a peanut-butter cup I didn’t like. But I digress.)

I dare say that Holly and I picked a fine time to get mixed up with these crazy horse people. They’re the first to admit that they’re crazy indeed, about the dear creatures they serve.

“I want the public to know how special these animals are – even if they can’t be ridden,” says Balla.

It’s reportedly not typical for an equine rescue to make lifetime commitments to the creatures in their care, regardless of age, special needs or adoptability, but Casey’s is different.

“This is a healing place,” she says.

Her “guests” are treated to veterinary, dental, farrier and even chiroprac-

tic care, if need be, along with other complementary, holistic interventions, including energy work.

One of Balla’s go-to remedies? Rio’s Relief Balm and Rio’s Relief Oil, therapeutic products handmade by BT naturals (btnaturals.com), a local company that uses all organic herbs and oils to aid people and animals with pain management and wellness. (It so happens that I’ve used this stuff myself, for two years. It’s amazing.) But the healing at Casey’s goes both ways, Balla admits.

And sometimes, “They’re [the horses] the teachers.”

This work is a passion for Balla, who says she has a “soft spot” for retired ponies. In spite of her team’s efforts, though, sometimes a horse or pony simply cannot recover from his trauma or injuries. Balla and her crew stick by them in those moments, too.

“There’s nothing more important you can do than to help someone cross over with grace and dignity,” she says.

Fortunately, though, most of Casey’s guests make it, learn that life can be good, and that people can be kind.

Love is the cure.

LEARNING TO GROW Jody Lay um explosion, you could find yourself fighting a much bigger battle to restore balance to the garden.

The saying “right plant, right place” means if you find the right plant and put it in the right place, it’s happy and everyone lives happily ever after. But if it’s too happy it can be the bane of the neighborhood, seeding and spreading as it pleases like a dandelion.

Purple loosestrife is a prime example of “right plant, right place” in the worst sense of the phrase.

It’s like the Asian carp of the plant world.

It isn’t native to Illinois but it loves our wetlands and can invade and conquer a fen, marsh or ditch in less than a year. Not only is it on Illinois’ noxious weed list, it is prohibited to be planted within 500 feet of a wetland to keep it at bay.

The only issue with that is who knows how close they are to a wetland. The ditch by the street can turn into a wetland overnight – in the last week, most of Illinois is a wetland!

As a responsible gardener you should stay on top of the Illinois noxious weed list but also consider how quickly a plant spreads before it might invade your neighborhood.

Plants we know and love, like bishop’s weed, vinca, ditch lilies and wild violets travel by rhizomes and can be difficult to exterminate, but others like sweet Annie and columbine can go to seed and turn up blocks away from your abode.

Something as simple as removing the seed heads can save everyone from a headache.

I’m using my neighborhood block party as an excuse to pull weeds in my neighbor’s yard. You probably think I have a problem, but in a neighborhood as small as mine, one weed can quickly become a million.

My neighbor calls her bishop’s weed (Aegopodium podagraria) her “garden” but as it creeps under her fence it really seems invasive rather than a garden. It makes you wonder: What is a weed and what is invasive and why should anyone care?

Someone gave me a chocolate eupatorium plant when we first bought our house and for the last five years it did great.

It slowly spread by rhizomes underground, which was easy to maintain but last year it went to seed, and now it’s everywhere. I didn’t know it could do this, and now I have hundreds of these little guys in my rose bed and lawn. Now, in addition to pulling weeds, I have to battle these guys, too!

Turns out this ideal plant that I love is just too happy and has become a nuisance or dare I say ... a weed. Technically a weed is “a plant out of place” so you could call it a weed.

I would call it invasive although the gardener’s definition of invasive is “detrimental to its environment.”

Each one of us has varying levels of tolerance for weeds, invasives and even spreading perennials.

If your style of gardening is more traditional like me, you prefer form and structure and plants that stay where you put them.

The occasional lily-of-thevalley bed to provide ground cover under my pine tree is about as crazy as I get, but my neighbor’s bishop’s weed that won’t stay on her side of the fence is a real thorn in my side.

Other gardeners are a little more casual and free form.

They let the plants grow as they like, spreading, moving and reseeding.

For gardeners with lots of space or not much free time, this is a great way to keep their gardens full and lush.

By MARK JENKINS Special To The Washington Post For Western audiences, Korean period dramas can require too much historical knowledge or rely too heavily on patriotic fervor.

Neither is a problem with “Kundo: Age of the Rampant,” a mid-19th-century escapade whose electric-guitar flourishes announce its irreverence. Director Yoon Jong-bin’s principal interests are rollicking combat scenes and rousing underdog triumphs.

The movie’s narrative backdrop is genuine. The late Joseon Era was known for corruption among the aristocracy, and poverty and hunger for nearly everyone else.

Bandit clans called “kundo” were common, and some of them had the Robin Hood-like ethic of the group celebrated in this tale.

The history lesson pretty

much stops there, however.

The movie owes less to real events and more to Chinese kung fu flicks – yes, there’s a battling monk – and Akira Kurosawa’s classic “Seven Samurai.” And the Ennio Morricone-derived score is just one echo of the spaghetti westerns that also inspired “The Good, the Bad, the Weird,” a 2008 Korean romp.

Like that film, “Kundo” combines dynamic action sequences with swaggering humor. The earthy dialogue may seem a little forced in subtitled translation, but the well-choreographed bedlam is freewheeling. Some of it borders on slapstick, although the movie is too bloody to be termed a comedy.

The first half of the morethan-two-hour tale introduces a bewildering number of characters.

Ultimately, though, the movie becomes a grudge match between two men

who’ve been wronged in very different ways: baby-faced villain Jo Yoon (Kang Dong-won) and well-meaning roughneck Dochi (Ha Jung-woo).

Both suffer because of their origins. Jo Yoon is the son of a nobleman, but his mother was a courtesan. For a time, he’s the only male heir, so his father accepts him. When a rival is born, Jo Yoon is displaced. That’s when he starts plotting of the deaths of various relatives, including a pregnant woman.

Dochi is a butcher, a member of Korean society’s lowest caste. When Jo Yoon offers him a job as an assassin, it seems like a step up.

But Dochi balks at murdering a mother-to-be, so Jo Yoon sends thugs to punish him. He escapes, badly burned, and joins the kundo.

Where a samurai-style hero might brandish two swords, Dochi attacks with a cleaver

in each hand.

Dochi’s getaway is a turning point both for him and the movie.

In its second half, “Kundo” becomes robust and exhilarating. The filmmakers stage cast-of-dozens battle scenes and one-on-one showdowns with equal brio.

When it opened in Korea last month, “Kundo” set a box-office record, only to have it toppled seven days later by the equally bold and brutal “The Admiral: Roaring Currents,” a 16th-century naval epic.

Both are fine examples of the energy that today’s Korean cinema is drawing from the past.

• “Kundo: Age of the Rampant” received two-anda-half stars out of four. The film is unrated and contains violence, torture, partial nudity and profanity. It is in Korean with subtitles and runs 137 minutes.

While “Mama” may not have been overjoyed at the amount her son spent on your engagement ring, it appears she did approve his chipping in for your education, so she’s not what I’d call a miser.

Chronic subdural hematomas can heal slowly Dear Doctor K: My mother is in her 70s. She fell a few weeks ago but seemed fine. Then she started to have double vision and some trouble with balance. A CT scan revealed a subdural hematoma. Her doctor advised only bed rest and medication. Does this seem reasonable to you?

Dear Reader: A subdural hematoma (or hemorrhage) occurs when blood vessels near the surface of the brain burst. Blood collects beneath the dura mater.

That’s the outermost layer of the brain’s protective covering. (I’ve put an illustration of a subdural hematoma on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Most subdural hemorrhages result from trauma to the head.

In some cases, blood accumulates rapidly after injury, putting pressure on the brain and causing symptoms within just a few days. This is an “acute” subdural hemorrhage. It can cause loss of consciousness, paralysis or even death. It usually requires emergency surgery to drain the hematoma and control bleeding.

Other times, as in your mother’s case, bleeding may develop over weeks or even months. If symptoms begin more than two weeks after the head trauma, it’s called a “chronic” subdural hematoma. The symptoms your mother experienced – double

Although subdural hematomas can occur at any age, they are most likely to occur in people your mother’s age. That may be because blood vessels are more fragile as people reach their 70s.

Sometimes, chronic subdural hematomas develop without any head trauma at all – or at least without any head trauma a person remembers. I once had a patient with a subdural hematoma who had no memory of any head trauma. Later, his wife remembered that he had banged his head walking into the edge of a partially opened door at night.

Some conditions can cause subdural hematomas that occur without any head trauma. Weakness in artery walls can cause them to start leaking blood. Certain types of cancer that spread to the brain’s protective covering also can cause bleeding.

Treatment is based on symptoms and the size of the hemato-

ma. A doctor can determine the amount of bleeding from a computed tomography (CT) scan or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

If your mother’s hematoma is small and has caused only minimal symptoms, then it’s reasonable for the doctor to recommend bed rest and medications. The medications should help control swelling and prevent seizures.

Symptoms should improve as her body gradually reabsorbs the blood. The doctor should carefully monitor your mother during treatment.

If your mother’s hemorrhage was larger or was causing more severe symptoms, a doctor would likely recommend surgery.

Most people who have a chronic subdural hemorrhage eventually get back to normal.

With any brain injury, however, symptoms can be slow to go away after treatment. And some symptoms may be permanent.

Hopefully, your mother will recover on her own, as her doctor thinks she will. If so, she will most likely not experience permanent symptoms.

While working with teens who had severe psychological problems at Healthcare Medical Center in Southern California, I had the opportunity to observe the 12 questions being asked of teens who suspected a sibling or parent might have a serious drinking

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace problem. The following questions were asked: 1. Has the person stayed home from school or work more than once because of drinking?

2. Does the person drink to feel more confident or to build self-esteem?

3. Does the person drink alone?

4. Does the person drink to escape problems?

5. Does the person feel guilty after being drunk?

6. Does it bother the drinker if someone accuses him of drinking too much?

7. Does the drinker need alcohol when stressed?

8. Has the drinker lost friends because of his or her drinking?

9. Has the drinker ever been arrested for being under the influence?

10. Has the drinker ever been obnoxious and ruined a special occasion?

11. Does the drinker feel a sense of power or well-being when drinking?

12. Has the drinker ever felt the need to apologize for his behavior after drinking?

Each question that requires a yes answer is a warning signal of a problem in the making.

If the person answered yes to three or more questions, it was agreed that there’s a definite problem with alcohol and treatment was prescribed.

East knows that West has six hearts and, therefore, that South has only one. And dummy’s diamond suit is threatening.

East should actively overtake the heart king with his ace and shift to the club queen. Here, this works perfectly, resulting in four spades one down instead of one over.
