LOCAL NEWS Search for snake on the loose continues Potentially venomous snake thought to be living in drain pipe

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com So far, a trap to catch a potentially venomous snake on the loose in the Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva has not caught anything.

But the company that is trying to catch the snake has put up a second trap in hopes of catching the snake.

Brad Lundsteen, of St. Charles-based Suburban Wildlife Control, on Wednesday had set up a trap on the property of a house on Revere

House Lane, where the snake reportedly was seen by a roofer who was working on the house. As of Thursday, Lundsteen said, nothing had been caught in the trap.

But now he has set up a second trap over a drain pipe on the property.

“I’m 98 percent sure there is a snake in that drain pipe,” he said.

Lundsteen said he plans to keep up the search for as long as it takes. He owns Suburban Wildlife Control with his wife, Katy.

“We will keep going until we catch it,” he said.

He said if it turns out to be a venomous snake, he will turn it over to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources so it can be relocated.

The company did find snake skins on a retention pond in the back of the house, but he said the skins were from a fox snake.

Katy Lundsteen said the homeowner contacted Suburban Wildlife Control after the roofer reported seeing the snake, thought to be a cottonmouth, a venomous snake which resides mainly in the southeastern United States. “[The roofer] said it was black and had an open white mouth,” Katy Lundsteen said.

Shoppers flock to new stores at Chicago Premium Outlets AURORA – Oswego resident Allison Cobb on Thursday morning was roaming through the aisles of the newly opened Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th store at Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora.

“We got here at 10 a.m., right when it opened,” Cobb said. “I like all the brands that they carry.”

The store is part of a 250,000-square-foot expansion of the mall, owned by Simon Property Group. The 30 new and expanded stores that opened Thursday included Saks, Abercrombie & Fitch Outlet, American Eagle Outfitters, Robert Graham and The Limited Outlet.

Several more stores are expected to open later this year, including Coty, Finish Line, Harry & David, Movado Company Store and Wellensteyn

By ASHLEY SLOBODA A former Kane County jail inmate has filed a lawsuit against the sheriff, alleging the inmate suffered an adverse reaction to medication he was forced to take while in custody, court documents show.

The case – which is in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division – was filed in February 2014 during former Sheriff Pat Perez’s tenure. The current sheriff, Donald Kramer, has been substituted for Perez.

Kane County also is named as a co-defendant.

Federico Campos – who was a pre-trial detainee at the Kane County Adult Justice Center between Jan. 7, 2012, and March 2, 2012 – claims he was required to take a tuberculosis medication against his will pursuant to jail policy, according to documents.

He asserts the medication, known as INH, caused an adverse reaction that included coughing blood, jaundice and liver failure, records show.

• Robert William Moore, 27, of the 300 block of Old Indian Trail, Aurora, was charged Friday, Aug. 14, with criminal trespass to real property.

• Cornelius Shaun Seals, 24, of the 100 block of Center Street, Elgin, was charged Thursday, Aug. 13, with speeding, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and fleeing or eluding police.

• James Gifford Butler, 27, of the 100 block of North 15th Street, St. Charles, was charged Wednesday, Aug. 12, with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault.

• Steven M. Anderson, 29, of the 1000 block of Dean Street, St. Charles, was charged Friday, Aug. 7, with driving without insurance, failure to give information after striking unattended property, improper lane use and driving under the influence of alcohol.

• Nathan A. Ekhtiari, 22, of the 100 block of South 18th Street, St. Charles, was charged Wednesday, Aug. 12, with improper lane use, failure to report damage after an accident and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

“While at Delnor Hospital, Campos came to believe INH had caused his medical problems when a nurse at the hospital suggested he further investigate his treatment at the jail, specifically related to the INH medication delivery,” documents state.

Judge Manish S. Shah on Aug. 19 denied the county and sheriff’s motion for summary judgment.

They had argued Campos “failed to exhaust administrative remedies under the Prison Litigation Reform Act and failed to file suit within the statute of limitations,” according to records.

In a written opinion, Shah determined Campos’ complaint was timely, and the PLRA exhaustion requirement did not apply to him because he was no longer a prisoner when he filed the lawsuit.

Lt. Pat Gengler, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said the office does not comment on ongoing legal matters.

Kane County official says state funding lag was ‘only temporary’

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Kane County will, in fact, receive state income tax payments from Illinois during the budget stalemate, officials learned after telling board members otherwise.

“Apparently the delay we recently observed that caused our concern was only temporary,” Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick wrote in an email Wednesday night.

Concerns arose when preparing for Wednesday’s Finance and Budget Committee,

Onzick wrote. At that time, he wrote, the state payments for July and August had not been vouchered.

Since the meeting Wednesday morning, the Illinois State Comptroller’s Office contacted the county to confirm it will receive state income tax payments for the state’s fiscal year, which began July 1, Onzick wrote.

“We see that the payments for both July and August are vouchered,” he wrote. “By vouchered, that means they are payment requests from the Illinois Department of

Revenue that have been approved and are now waiting to be processed by the State Comptroller’s Office.”

Onzick indicated the salary reimbursements for the state’s attorney, public defender and supervisor of assessments remain suspended.

“At this point there is no evidence that the salary reimbursements have resumed,” he wrote in an email Thursday.

The county will continue to pay their salaries, Onzick said immediately after the committee meeting Wednesday.

Prosecutor charged with DUI resigns

Kathleen R. Doyen, 30, of Chicago, also was charged with driving with a blood-al-

cohol content of more than 0.08 percent, improper lane use and speeding in an incident that took place in Carol Kathleen Stream.

R. Doyen Doyen’s attorney, Gary Johnson, confirmed Doyen resigned from the Kane Coun-

ty State’s Attorney’s Office, where she had worked since 2011. Johnson would not comment further. Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon could not immediately be reached to comment about Doyen’s status. Previously, McMahon had said her employment there was a personnel issue.

Doyen is to appear Sept. 14 in DuPage County court.

police compare armed robbery cases

BATAVIA – Batavia police are working with authorities in DeKalb to determine whether armed robberies in the two communities are related, police said Thursday.

The Batavia AT&T store, at 201 N. Randall Road, was robbed about 7 p.m. Monday by two men who displayed a handgun and took money, cellphones and other electronic devices, police have said.

Wednesday, a T-Mobile store was robbed in DeKalb at about 3:30 p.m. Three men – K’ron D. Price, 26, of Country Club Hills; Paul Grissom, 22, of Chicago; and Tyren L. Windell, 26, of Chicago – have been charged with armed robbery in connection with the incident.

Batavia Police Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said his department is communicating with DeKalb police to determine whether the robberies are linked.

“We don’t have enough at this point to charge anybody,” he said Thursday.

“At this point, the investigation still continues.”

Witnesses in Batavia described the suspects as

black men about 20 to 30 years old, each about 6 feet tall with thin builds, police have said. The men reportedly fled in a vehicle in an unknown direction.

In DeKalb, three men left the T-Mobile store through a back door and took off running when they saw police, according to a news release. Two of the men were caught after a short chase, and the third was on the run for about 40 minutes before he was arrested near Kishwaukee Hospital, police said.

DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo on Thursday said it was likely the alleged robbers had help from another person.

“I’m confident that through the investigation we’ll find someone else,” Petragallo said. “These three that were charged got there somehow, whether there’s a vehicle that they parked somewhere a distance away or they got a ride, that’s something that we have to look into.”

After 13 years as director of recreation and communications for the Fox Valley Park District, lifelong Auroran Laurie Hoffman has announced she is leaving the district for a new job.

Hoffman recently informed park district staff she has accepted an offer to become director of community services for the city of Irvine, California, and will transition into that role by the end of September, according to a news release from the Fox Valley Park District. The park district serves Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery.

Hoffman joined the park district in 2002 after her leadership with the advocacy group Residents for Park and Recreation, which built a coalition of community support for a

$33 million park district referendum, according to the release. That referendum funded construction of the Vaughan Athletic Center – now the park district’s signature facility – along with expansion and improvements of the Eola and Prisco community centers, the release stated.

Laurie As director Hoffman of recreation and communications, Hoffman led the district’s programming and event planning.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Fox Valley Park District, working in communities that I truly love,” Hoffman stated in the release. “I am sincerely inspired by the relationship between the park district and our residents. We

E

very day, Geneva resident John Zurn deals with bipolar disorder – a mental illness also known as manic depression – that causes periods of elevated moods or manic episodes, alternating with depression.

Several years ago, Zurn said he once suffered from a delusion he was the fifth member of the famous rock band, the Beatles, and made a landing strip so the group could land. He wrote “The Bipolar Challenge” in 2008 about his struggle with mental illness – and said he also has finished his ninth book on the subject.

“It’s a problem in the brain that’s causing everything,” said Zurn, 61, a retired teacher. “The symptoms become the behavior. I take medicine faithfully

every day. I deal with it every day. I developed a lot of coping skills.”

Zurn also still has the love and support of his wife of 33 years.

“We are best friends,” Donna Zurn said. “When he’s having a difficult day, we know. We

recognize it. We go through the challenges together.”

Many with mental illness and with few resources – such as insurance – turn to community mental health providers for services. But local providers – such as the Ecker Center for Mental Health and the As-

sociation for Individual Development – say they do not have enough funding to adequately support Kane County residents who suffer from mental illness.

This is the first of a two-part series looking at the challenges.

Campton Hills resident Bill Beith, who worked as a mental health specialist at the Elgin Mental Health Center for 30 years, said the issues with state funding for local mental health services started in the 1980s.

Beith said the state started shutting down or downsizing its psychiatric hospitals and shifted those responsibilities to community agencies.

“Springfield said, ‘We’ll just transfer the money we’re saving from state hospitals to community agencies,’ ” Beith said.

“Of course, when state funding is rough, that is the first thing that is cut. That has just continued to dry up and dry up.”

The Kane County Chronicle is taking a closer look at local mental health services in a two-day series. This is part one of a twopart series.

The unintended consequence of not providing adequate funding or access to state hospitals results in more people with mental illness going to jail, Beith said.

Mentally ill people can act out because of their illness and get arrested, Beith said.

“Paying for mental health service in the department of corrections environment is far more costly than delivering that same treatment within a state hospital,” Beith said.

Beith retired from the state, served as Campton Hills’ first village clerk, then went back to school for a master’s degree in public administration. He began a second career as assistant village administrator for Gilberts. He also serves on the Kane County Mental Health Advisory Committee, which looks at efficient and economical ways to deliver services.

As the state of Illinois grapples with its budgetary woes – and with funding for mental health providers in jeopardy – Beith said what some might not understand is the state cannot save money by not providing service.

“What they don’t consider – on a systemic-wide basis – is the cost of that service provision dispersed over the criminal court system and all of the other mentally ill people

who go to libraries and get disruptive there,” Beith said. “There is a cost associated with all of that.”

Illinois has seven psychiatric hospitals. The Elgin Mental Health Center has 344 beds for forensic – criminal patients – and 75 beds for civil patients who do not have insurance, a state spokeswoman said.

Beith said closing state hospitals and downsizing others created a hidden cost that is more expensive to society as a whole. He said state hospitals can be a place of refuge for a person with mental illness.

“Some people can’t take the stress of normal society all the time,” Beith said. “Here is their island of refuge, a halfway house where they can have a nurturing and caring campus and all the resources they need to get through life – not on the street, not under the bridge, not suffering.”

••• As the state plans to cut its budget for psychiatric service contracts, those who work at agencies, such as the Ecker Center for Mental Health and the Association for Individual Development, which serve people without insurance, are wondering what they are going to do.

“This fiscal year, the [Gov.] Bruce Rauner administration did not give us any contracts for psychiatry,” Ecker Center Executive

Director Karen Beyer said.

“They need psychiatry and medications to control their symptoms, so they can participate in other programs for which we have contracts,” Beyer said. “That means that, eventually, if they don’t change this, the whole system will go down. This will put us out of business, eventually. We have to do something about this.”

“We were given no explanation as to why we were not offered contracts to continue these vital services,” AID Executive Director Lynn O’Shea wrote in an email.

“We will soon exhaust the limits of our line of credit, and will have to use our meager savings to keep our doors open through September.”

Rauner and the legislature’s Democratic majority are in an ongoing battle over the fiscal 2016 budget. Rauner has vetoed 19 budget bills as of June 25 that he said would create a nearly $4 billion deficit for the state, which already is financially troubled.

Veronica Vera, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Human Services, said the cut to psychiatry contracts was “one of [many] very difficult decisions … that we have to make.”

“In the absence of structural reforms, difficult decisions were made in order to ensure the viabili-

ty of programs that serve our state’s most vulnerable,” Vera said.

Beyer said this is a recipe for disaster.

“There is, in general, a lack of psychiatric beds in our area, public and private,” Beyer said. “People do wait sometimes a day or so for a bed. You can imagine what it will be like when we have a lot of people who don’t have medication and will be flooding the emergency rooms.”

The Ecker Center helps patients who have no insurance and are ill enough to qualify for hospitalization at the Elgin Mental Health Center, Beyer said.

“If people are not receiving medications, they can’t be in therapy,” Beyer said. “You can’t be in therapy if you don’t know what is real and what’s not. … Studies show people with severe mental illness are no more violent than the regular population. But if they have no access to treatment, they are more violent.”

Beyer said she does not think the governor understands the full ramifications of the cuts to psychiatry contracts.

“All of us in the field will hang on until we just can’t function anymore,” Beyer said. “We keep hoping this will get fixed. But it’s beginning to look more and more that there is no will to fix this, no desire to fix it.”

Kenneth B. Louderback, age 73, a resident of Wayne, died unexpectedly, but peacefully, on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1941, in Streator, the son of Clarence and Ruth (Bryan) Louderback. Ken grew up in Genoa, and graduated from Genoa Kingston High School.

He was married to the love of his life, Diane C. Krueger. They met at Northern Illinois University while both were undergraduates.

He was a CPA and partner at Arthur Andersen which he made his life’s work and where he took the greatest satisfaction in mentoring others.

He loved working on the farm with Diane in northwest Illinois, traveling the world with his family and spending time with friends. He was an avid sports fan, especially the Bears and the Cubs, and enjoyed tailgating and attending games with his son.

Ken was a devoted family man and nothing gave him more pleasure than spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Diane (nee Krueger); children, Chandra (Aaron) Irving of East Lansing, MI and Todd (Cindy) Louderback of Elmhurst; grandchildren, Emma Louderback and Molly Irving. Ken is survived by his sisters, Judith

Sally J. Walker passed away peacefully at the age of 80, after a 10 week battle with cancer. She was a resident of Geneva, and Ranch Cucamonga, California. Sally was born the youngest of three children to Art and Alleen Houle.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dale Walker.

She is survived by her daughters, Jana (Chuck) Mycoff and Denise Hansen; her grandchildren, Chaz (Kristin) Mycoff, Kayla Mycoff and Krista Hansen; her brothers, Mort and Terry Houle.

Services will be held Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at Faith Baptist Church of Mill Creek, 1S455 S. Mill Creek Drive, Geneva, IL 60134.

Kane County Circuit Judge John Barsanti on Dec. 4 is set to hear a motion for a new trial from a former Batavia resident who was convicted in July of aggravated battery to a child.

Nicholas E. Glucksmann, 52, formerly of Batavia and most recently of Aurora, was convicted July 8 by Barsanti of aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery to a child, all felonies. Glucksmann had a court hearing Thursday, when he told the judge that he has hired a private attorney, Sladjana Vuckovic. He previously was represented by a Kane County public defender.

Kane County Assistant Public Defender Eun Yoon previously had filed a motion requesting a new trial. In the motion, Yoon contended prosecutors did not present sufficient evidence to prove Glucksmann was the one who caused the injuries to the child. The

motion also stated the court erred in finding there was sufficient circumstances to prove the child’s trauma was caused intentionally based on the nature and extent of the injuries. Prosecutors had presented evidence that on the evening of April 16, 2011, Glucksmann and his girlfriend took an infant that Nicholas E. lived in their Glucksmann household to the emergency room after the child began to lose consciousness at their residence in the 300 block of South Batavia Avenue, Batavia, which Glucksmann and the girlfriend shared, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Emergency room doctors determined the child had suffered head injuries. They sent the child to a Chicago hospital and called police to report suspected child abuse, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

When ‘packin’ means more than going on a trip RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger I load the gun, one round at a time. I cock the pistol and s-l-o-w-l-y ease open the sliding glass door. The thief, continuing to plunder, doesn’t hear me.

My gun will teach it manners.

I squeeze the handgun through the door’s narrow opening, sight in, and fire.

The projectile hits its target, the bird feeder just above the squirrel’s head. Under attack, the greedy, gray rodent flees from deck to maple tree, down its trunk, and across the lawn.

“Someone’s going to think you’re aiming a real gun at them and shoot back,” my wife, Tia, warns.

“Just giving the squirrel a copper surprise,” I say, holstering my Wyatt Earp fantasy.

She’s afraid if cops or nervous Nellie neighbors see me handling a Colt .45 look-alike, they might mistake my BBs for bullets. I get that: Rob a bank with an air assault rifle, and you might get shot. However, I’m not planning on withdrawing money that way, even to pay my property tax (although I feel like the school board’s robbing me).

But here’s what I don’t get: The same night Geneva aldermen passed an amendment to the city code related to the state’s concealed carry law, they tabled discussion on the legality of discharging BB guns within city limits. Geneva Police Chief Steve Mexin told council members it was illegal for Genevans to discharge an air rifle if the BB or pellet left their property.

Over a glass of wine, I talked guns with a neighbor.

“I don’t have a gun,” he confided, “due to road rage.”

“Yeah, you might miss me, and hit someone else.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t miss,” he assured me.

Road rage or lawn rage, both can destroy lives. Does Geneva really want to go on record saying it’s OK to tote weapons that can kill if we’re angry or scared enough to use them, while saying “no” to air guns?

Alderman Tom Simonian wrote his colleagues that if they’re outlawing stuff that lands where unexpected, they also should make illegal nail guns, baseballs and stones.

And fishing rods! I’ve got another neighbor who practices fly casting on his front lawn; even without a barbed fly, who knows what devastation that nearly invisible clear tapered leader might inflict on unsuspecting babies and parents strolling along the sidewalk?

Allow me a modest proposal: A concealed-carry law not for guns that can end a life or maim for life, but for air guns!

If walking your dog, and a cottonmouth snake or addicted fly fisherman threatens your well-being, pull out your imitation Dirty Harry hand cannon and ward off the dangerous sidewinder, or the snake.

If the city permanently outlaws air rifles, everyone may need to take up fly fishing for protection. I can hear home invaders scream: “Don’t cast!

Keep that lead-eyed bucktail streamer away from me! What do I look like, a brook trout?”

We’ll all sleep easier with a seven-and-a-half weight, eight-foot fly rod standing guard behind our night tables.

The next presidential debate topic

By HAROLD MEYERSON Special to The Washington Post In a few weeks, the Republicans will hold their second presidential debate, and if it’s anything like the first, it’s bound to be a doozy. The continued ascent of Donald Trump, and his unmitigated displays of ego, id, racism and sexism, guarantee a viewership many times larger than what a “normal” intraparty debate 14 months before the general election would draw.

An audience that should extend well beyond the party faithful, however, places a special obligation on CNN’s moderators: They need to extend their questions to topics that fall outside Republicans’ comfort zones. While the three Fox News questioners in the initial debate did a good job of enabling the candidates to differentiate themselves on issues of concern to GOP activists, there was a raft of issues they left largely

untouched. Chief among these was the economy, the perennial No. 1 concern of Americans generally and of rank-and-file Republicans, too, but also a topic Fox News tends to underplay.

This isn’t a one-party suggestion. When the Democratic candidates meet for their first debate in October, a general-election set of questions would be in order for them, as well. But the insularity of the discourse in conservative media is such that economic issues on which substantial numbers and, on occasion, majorities of Republicans agree with their Democratic and independent compatriots are rarely brought up for fear they’ll run afoul of GOP political correctness.

It’s all the more incumbent for the moderators in the upcoming Republican debates to pose such questions.

Herewith, a few of them, in some cases with polling that shows that, far from addressing just liberals’

niche concerns, these questions touch on issues of concern to Republicans: First, should employers be legally required to give their employees paid sick leave? In a CBS News/New York Times poll from late May, 85 percent of the public and 77 percent of Republicans favored the idea.

President Barack Obama has called for raising the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10, a proposal that 71 percent of Americans and 50 percent of Republicans support. Do you?

Do you favor the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership?

Do you think globalization has placed downward pressure on U.S. wages? If you do, how would you propose to offset that?

It’s time for the GOP candidates to confront some real-world economic choices.

Batavia enters opener with 2014 on its mind

What could have happened if the Bulldogs came out of their Week 1 matchup, hosting Oswego, with a win? What could have happened if they didn’t get Mount Carmel as its first-round matchup in the Class 7A playoffs? Or what if they would have eluded the Caravan and moved on?

All that is in the past, and most all of the returning players have one thing on their minds: Revenge.

The season that many want to make sure they make a memorable one will start off with a chance to do just that.

“It’s that revenge factor that a lot of us have,” senior starting quarterback Kyle Niemiec said. “All of us have talked about it all offseason

and have worked so hard. No one expected us to be in that game last year. Oswego certainly didn’t, and it makes this game (today) that much more exciting.”

For a refresher, Oswego came back to beat Batavia on the game’s final play last sea-

son to hand the Bulldogs a 0-1 start. That game nor the loss to Mount Carmel has left any of the minds of the returning players, and probably not anyone involved in either affair.

But fifth-year Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said last season has certainly motivated this group to come out determined, and their preparation since practice started has been unlike any he’s seen in his tenure at Batavia.

“These guys want it,” Piron said. “Not that other teams didn’t, but we’ve prepared as well as any football team I’ve had since being coach here.

They deserve to have a great

season with all the time and effort they have put in, and we’re excited to get things going against a very good football team in Oswego.”

Senior receiver Canaan Coffey will be no secret to Oswego team, having contributed 13 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns in last season’s opener. Since the first day of fall practices Aug. 10, Coffey has talked about revenge and wanting his senior year to end on a positive note.

Once again, Mother Nature was bored, so she decided to have some fun on Week 1 last season. While rain washed out just about every football game, today’s forecast looks much more optimistic, with a 25 percent chance of rain. Knock on wood.

“Both teams have to play in [bad weather], so you control what you can,” said St. Francis coach Mike Fitzgerald, whose Spartans team missed out on the opening storm while in Wisconsin. “We never want to make excuses, so hopefully it doesn’t rain, but you play your game and focus on yourself.”

SLEEPER GAME OF THE WEEK

North coach Rob Pomazak said he “knows Schaumburg coach Mark Stilling and his staff very well and respects what they do.”

There is potential for this game to be a good one because the Saxons are coming off a season to forget, going 1-8, while the North Stars tied a school record by winning eight games. Don’t expect a lopsided score even though last season’s records may indicate so.

Jason Newburger will make his debut as a head coach as Burlington Central hosts Hampshire.

Although he’s no stranger to coaching football, having most recently been a member of the Vernon Hills staff, Newburger will take the field for the first time as a head coach and has integrated a “no excuses” policy with his Rockets bunch.

The buzz in the stands

High school football is back, and what better way to start things for these two teams.

Last season’s opener between the Bulldogs and Panthers provided just about everything a football fan watching a high school game could ask for, with a touchdown as time expired to give Oswego a 40-38 victory.

Both teams exited the playoffs earlier than expected. Batavia suffered a 21-16, first-round loss to Mount Carmel in Class 7A, while Class 8A Oswego is looking to give fourth-year head coach Brian Cooney his first state title after falling to Bolingbrook in overtime in the second round.

Both teams return key players, with Oswego bringing back standout quarterback and NCAA Division I prospect Steven Frank. But the Panthers will be without receiver Joseph Hennessey, who caught the touchdown to win last year’s barnburner, for a few weeks because of an injury.

“We know both teams are going to come out fired up,” Cooney said. “(Batavia coach Dennis Piron) and his staff have done a phenomenal job with that program since he took over there and it shows. They are a well-disciplined, well-coached team, and it’s a great matchup for us to open our season.”

Both coaches have raved about their respective group in this matchup. Piron has talked about the size and strength of his

offensive line from the start of camp. The starting O-line for the Bulldogs averages 6-foot-3, 265 pounds. “We’re real, real big up front,” Piron said. “I like a lot of what we are bringing to the field this year, but our size up front is a big strength.” Batavia will need guys like Zach Sims, Ross Berggren and Evan Day to clear space against a very skilled Panthers defensive line.

Cooney said when this season is complete, he believes the defensive line will be the team’s anchor on that side of the ball. He didn’t name one specific player, but said most teams the Panthers play this season will have a tough time keeping everyone away from the quarterback.

Saints feel at ease again

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Mill Creek Golf Club serves as the home course of the Geneva boys golf team and a handful of its players.

During St. Charles East’s recent visits, however, the Saints have been the ones making a run at the leaderboard, if not the title deed.

East excelled once again Thursday, capturing the Geneva Invitational title for the second successive season behind separate even-par 71s from junior Mike Bertke and sophomore Danny Buetow.

The Saints scored a 294, edging Marmion (301) and DeKalb (303) atop the 18-team field.

“Historically, we’ve played here pretty well,” Bertke said.

“We won this last year, we advanced from the regional here last year, so I think all the guys on the team know the course pretty well, and I think that enables us to go out there and shoot scores in the 200s, and that’ll win us a majority of events.”

Bertke officially earned medalist honors by virtue of winning a scorecard playoff with Buetow and DeKalb’s Austin Freeman. The method? Count backward from No. 18.

Geneva junior Casey Prentiss also grinned about the score he took on 17. A 10 never hurt so good considering what he accomplished on No. 8.

Sizing up the 140-yard par 3 with a pitching wedge, Prentiss actually hit the heel of the club, which occasionally can be cause to look away voluntarily. This time, he didn’t have that problem.

“I couldn’t see. I knew it was going to be on the green, but my dad was sitting in the cart to the left, and I just hear, ‘Oh my God,’ and he comes up saying it went in,” Prentiss said. “And that’s how I knew.”

The eventual ace landed slightly short and to the left of the green before kicking right and traveling 10-15 feet into the cup. And yes, Prentiss’ dad, Rob, who coaches St. Charles North, witnessed the feat.

“The fun part is, I got to watch it,” Rob Prentiss said.

Again, that elation made it easier to stomach another hiccup hole that immediately followed. Casey Prentiss, who finished with an 82, quadruple bogeyed the par 5 ninth hole moments after his holein-one.

you have to do to dream big,” Piron said. “This team has earned the right to dream a little and be realistic about making a run into the playoffs and heading to DeKalb (for the state championship game). There’s nothing wrong with that because I would tell a team if they had not earned that right. These guys have worked their tails off and have earned the right to think about this being a season to remember.”

Bulldogs simply want to play football and hit someone that doesn’t wear the same jersey.

“It’s something we’ve been looking forward to since both of those whistles sounded,” Coffey said. “Since the game ended against both Oswego and Mount Carmel. We want it bad this year and have done everything we can to be ready for (today)” “We want to dictate play, not just against Oswego, but every opponent this year,” senior offensive Zach Sims said.

“We don’t want them running us over; we want to play Batavia football and make up for everything that happened last year. We feel we’re ready.”

It means quite a bit for Piron to say this team may be more prepared and ready to go than any team in his previous four seasons at Batavia.

Piron held up the Class 6A state championship trophy in 2013, with his team finishing 13-1.

Piron feels that this team has done what is necessary to think about 2015 being a special season for the program.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE HUNTLEY – After defeating Glenbard East earlier in the week, the Geneva boys soccer team had a new challenge facing it on Thursday. The Vikings went on the road to play a senior-led Huntley team that they weren’t too familiar with.

The Vikings were up to the challenge early, but struggled to get many shots on goal in a 1-0, nonconference loss.

The Vikings’ best scoring chance in the first half came off the foot of sophomore Eric Anderson, who was the victim of a solid stop by Huntley keeper Michael Parks.

Jason Morales put forth quite an effort in net for the Vikings (1-1) in a game that could have easily gotten out of hand. Huntley had 11 shots in the game and Morales came up with seven key saves to keep the Vikings close.

“Jason (Morales) is a really intelligent kid who made some great saves and really kept us in the game,” Geneva coach Ryan Estabrook said. “We seemed to struggle in warmups and kind of took that to the start of the game. Huntley is a really good team that you need to play well against.

I think we learned today you can’t just show up and expect to beat a team like that. Today was a good test for our young team.”

East Aurora 1, Batavia 0: At Batavia, the Bulldogs (0-2) fell to East Aurora in the nonconference matchup. Jimmy Perrault had three saves in goal for Batavia.

Marmion 0, Plainfield East 0:

The Cougars clinched a Midwest League postseason berth with Wednesday night’s 7-1 victory at Beloit, winning the series finale after losing a pair of earlier games against the Snappers.

Kane County, which won the 2014 MWL championship as a Cubs affiliate, is in the first season of a two-year, Class-A player development contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cougars entered Thursday’s game at Cedar Rapids with a 3919 record in the second half and a 75-51 mark overall.

The MWL playoffs begin Sept.

9. With second-half playoff spots and positioning still undetermined, the Cougars’ home field advantage situation remains unresolved.

If the club wins the Western Division title, it would open the best-of-three first round series on the road before hosting Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) on Sept. 10 and 11. If the Cougars are the wild card, they would open the playoffs at home before finishing the series on the road.

Culver’s in St. Charles recently donated 10 percent of its receipts to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association on behalf of a 16-month-old child, Calvin Hummel, from North Aurora. Calvin has a kidney disease and routinely receives dialysis from a children’s clinic while he awaits a kidney transplant, which he can receive as soon as he weighs 22 pounds, the release states.

Culver’s donated 10 percent of its receipts to the association on behalf of a 16-month-old child named Calvin Hummel, who has a kidney disease, according to a news release.

“Calvin is a special boy, and we were thrilled to be able to raise some money for COTA in his honor,” St. Charles Culver’s owner Scott Martenson said in the release.

Hundreds of guests stopped by to dine and visit with the family. The restaurant’s balloon artist, “Magic Matt,” donated his tips from the night to the cause, too.

“Our community came out to show support, and in turn they learned a little more about COTA and all they do for young people awaiting transplants,” Martenson said in the release.

Calvin, a North Aurora resident, was diagnosed with Infantile Nephrotic Syndrome last January.

By March, he had no kidney function and the organ was removed in April. Calvin continues to receive dialysis four days a week at a Chicago children’s clinic while he awaits a kidney transplant, which he can receive once he weighs 22 pounds, states the release.

Every dollar raised in honor of COTA’s patients is used for transplant-related expenses, according to the release.

Historian and librarian Sarah Okner, a descendant of internees, will share photos and details of daily life in an internment camp, and she will discuss the effects it had on those living there.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan in December 1941, Japanese-Americans living on the West Coast were forced from their homes and into relocation camps in remote areas of the country. Among the more than 120,000 Japanese-Americans who were incarcerated, more than two-thirds were American-born, and many were children, states a news release.

For more than three years, Okner has presented the lecture for public libraries, historical societies, senior centers and other community organizations in the Chicago area. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Science in library and information science.

As part of National Minority Donor Awareness Month in August, the Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network is reminding people of the need for organ and tissue donations among minorities.

Of the more than 5,300 people on the waiting list for an organ transplant in the state of Illinois, 63 percent are minorities, according to a news release.

Gift of Hope, a nonprofit organization that coordinates the donation of organs and tissues with 180 hospitals in Illinois and northeast Indiana, invites the Hispanic community to continue increasing the number of entries in the state registry and to show active solidarity with those waiting for transplants, the release states.

Dear Abby: My sister-in-law quit her job and moved into my in-laws’ basement six years ago.

I think there may have been an emotional breakdown having to do with her work. I also think it upsets my mother-in-law to have her adult daughter living this life. Mom isn’t willing to ask her to move out or even discuss the situation.

Pseudogout can be annoying, but is rarely serious Dear Doctor K: What is pseudogout? Is it related to gout?

Dear Reader: Pseudogout is a form of arthritis triggered by deposits of calcium crystals in the joints. As crystals accumulate in the affected joint, they can cause a reaction that leads to severe pain, redness, warmth and swelling.

The attack often lasts several days, and can last weeks.

As the name suggests, pseudogout can cause symptoms similar to those of gout. Gout is caused when another type of crystal, uric acid, accumulates in a joint.

Gout commonly affects just a single joint – most often the big toe. Pseudogout also can resemble osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, in making multiple joints ache simultaneously. It most often occurs in the knee, wrist, shoulder, ankle or elbow.

Pseudogout is most common in older people and tends to run in families. For reasons we don’t fully understand, people who suffer from any of the following conditions are more likely to develop pseudogout: • Age-related degenerative joint disease, also called osteoarthritis; • Past joint injury; • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism); • A condition called hyperparathyroidism;

Frequently, however, doctors cannot identify anything that might have triggered the disease.

To diagnose pseudogout, your doctor may remove a sample of fluid from an inflamed joint. He or she will test it for the presence of calcium crystals and for uric acid crystals (to determine if it is gout).

The fluid also will be tested for an infection or other cause of joint inflammation. Your doctor may test for conditions that can trigger pseudogout, too.

Removing the fluid from an inflamed joint to make a diagnosis, a procedure called joint aspiration, can also help to relieve the symptoms. It eases the pressure and discomfort. After the area is numbed, the doctor inserts a needle to withdraw fluid.

Treatment usually includes pain- and inflammation-relieving NSAIDs or injections of a glucocorticoid to keep the swelling down. These two treatments usually eliminate symptoms within hours to a few days. If the doctor determines that you cannot take

these medicines, you may instead be prescribed corticosteroid pills for a short time.

Preventing future attacks is possible. If another condition is triggering attacks of pseudogout, such as an underactive thyroid, treatment of that condition may prevent future attacks. In addition, your doctor may prescribe a medicine called colchicine (Colcrys) or an NSAID to take regularly. Both types of treatment help to prevent the inflammation in the joint.

While there is a medicine that lowers the level of uric acid in the body, and thereby reduces the attack rate of gout, there is no comparable medicine yet to prevent attacks of pseudogout.

Over time, pseudogout can cause a joint to degenerate in people with recurrent or ongoing symptoms. In this case, surgery (such as joint replacement) may become the only effective treatment.

Pseudogout is a chronic, annoying problem that usually responds to prompt treatment.

Fortunately, serious consequences are rare.

What can I do to get my parents to tell me they love me instead of continuing to make me feel guilty? – Nameless, Atlanta, Georgia Dear Nameless: Guilt trips are usually ineffective and cause resentment. Parents need to discuss unacceptable behavior with their teens. A teen who is genuinely sorry for his or her actions, apologizes and promises not to do it again (and accepts the punishment) must be forgiven, and the trust between parent and child restored.

In this example, South is in four spades. West leads the club queen.

How should South play?

Some players with the North hand would respond four spades, bidding to the 10-trick level with a 10-card fit. But that does not necessarily apply in an uncontested auction. Here, with a balanced hand, North should rein in a notch or two. Advocates of the Losing Trick Count would respond with a game-invitational three spades, but it is a close decision. When North settles for two spades, South shoots for game. Opposite three spades, South might dabble his toe in the slam water with a four-heart control-bid (cue-bid), which, here, North would reject.

South has one club loser, so must restrict his diamond losers to two.

Declarer should win the first trick with dummy’s club ace, draw trumps, cash his heart winners, and cast adrift with a club. Whoever wins this trick must either open up diamonds or concede a ruff-andsluff. In each case, South loses only two diamond tricks and makes his contract.

Finally, if South must play on diamonds himself, he should start with dummy’s jack, hoping that East fails to cover an honor with an honor (or has the ace and king).
