Geneva man’s murder case back in court next week

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County judge on Wednesday continued to take a substitution of judge request under advisement in a Geneva man’s murder case.

King.

King faces two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Kathleen King. Her body was found July 6 on railroad tracks less than a half-mile from their Geneva home. Shadwick King appeared at Wednesday’s court hearing and remained Wednesday afternoon in the Kane County Jail on a $1.5 million bond, according to online records.

Childress also subpoenaed more than a dozen law-enforcement agencies seeking evidence in the case, including reports and records of 911 calls about Kathleen King’s death, and any reports involving contact with Shadwick King and Kathleen King’s relatives.

Childress also subpoenaed the Metra Law Department for July 6 reports about a female on railroad tracks, and information on a July 6 call from a conductor on a Metra train about a female on the tracks.

BATAVIA – Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit said he will not be able to physically attend any Batavia City Council meetings for the next few months because he will undergo open heart surgery Sept. 8.

On Wednesday, Chanzit said he has a heart defect called hypertrophic obstruc-

tive cardiomyopathy that will require surgery.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a disease in which the heart muscle (myocardium) becomes abnormally Dan Chanzit thick, according to Mayo Clinic’s website.

The thickened heart muscle

can make it harder for the heart to pump blood.

He will have the surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He is confident the surgery will be successful.

“It’s supposed to be 99 percent successful,” Chanzit said.

“I’m supposed to have a normal life expectancy after the surgery.”

Chanzit first was appointed to the City Council in May

2010.

He ran unopposed in the April 2011 election.

Chanzit, 38, said it will take six to eight months for him to recover from the surgery.

“I can’t drive a car for a month or so,” he said.

Although he will not be able to physically attend any City Council meetings until at least mid-October, Chanzit said he plans to participate in meetings via telephone.

There is a stump near Stadium Drive, and participants will meet there. There is a road that runs between Maroon Drive and Route 19, and the athletic fields are on it near Route 19.

Participants should park in the student lot. The stump area is directly behind the school, but across the street.

Search for Kaneland interim superintendent renewed

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The search for an interim superintendent will be renewed at Kaneland School District 302, and a special board meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday to address the situation.

Ken Sorrick, who was introduced Monday as the district’s interim superintendent, has submitted his letter of resignation, board President Cheryl Krauspe said Wednesday.

A t T u e s - Ken Sorrick day’s board meeting, the plan is to accept Sorrick’s resignation and possibly hire a new interim superintendent, Krauspe said.

At this week’s board meeting, board member Tony Valente voted against appointing Sorrick, saying he was concerned about the amount of days Kaneland would have Sorrick’s services, which were capped at 100 because of limitations on the TRS, or the teacher retirement system.

Valente said the dates Sorrick would be available should have been more spaced out, so that Sorrick would have been available through a later date.

An interim superintendent is necessary because current Superintendent Jeff Schuler is in his last week at Kaneland.

Schuler is resigning to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200, where he starts next week.

“I know he wasn’t too happy with me, and I wasn’t too happy with him.”

Tony Valente Board member Of Sorrick, Krauspe said “we lost a gem of an opportunity.” However, in a news release announcing Sorrick as the interim superintendent, Krauspe noted that Sorrick was one of five candidates considered.

And she previously had praised the candidates, saying “I think that Kaneland has been really fortunate that we have interest from so many highly qualified candidates who could fill the interim position.”

Sorrick was to receive $90,000 to assume all superintendent responsibilities and direct the search for a longterm superintendent. That process was set to get underway.

Valente said he believes that Sorrick resigned because of what Valente said at Monday’s meeting, as well as Valente’s vote against naming Sorrick as the interim superintendent.

“It was a board that’s challenging you,” Valente said, adding that he didn’t believe Sorrick wanted to be challenged.

Valente said he grew concerned Monday after he learned that Sorrick’s schedule would not be more spaced out.

“I know he wasn’t too happy with me, and I wasn’t too happy with him,” Valente

said.

Kaneland board meetings have been tense at times.

On Monday, for instance, Valente pushed for results of a parent survey that was taken last year.

Schuler said there would need to be some redacting of names, saying there likely was an expectation of anonymity when parents took the survey.

Valente said he wanted the data “not scrubbed in any way.”

“How I release it to you is how I release it to the public,” Schuler said.

Valente said the board should want that information made public and asked Krauspe why she wouldn’t want that information shared.

He said he was “so disappointed” and added “censorship lives.”

Cadence, Northwestern merger finalized; begins Sept. 1

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The merger between Cadence Health and Northwestern Memorial HealthCare is finalized, the organizations announced Wednesday in a joint news release.

As of Sept. 1, Cadence will be formally integrated with Northwestern, and they will operate under the Northwestern Medicine brand name, according to the release. The four hospitals in the health systems are: Delnor Hospital in Geneva; Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield; Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest.

The Cadence name will be phased out as a result of the merger, Chris King, Cadence Health senior manager of public relations, said in a phone interview.

“Anything under the Cadence umbrella is now part of Northwestern Medicine,” King said, including the Ca-

dence Cancer Center that opened in 2013 on the Delnor campus.

“We are honored to welcome Cadence Health into the Northwestern Medicine family,” Dean M. Harrison, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare president and CEO, wrote in the release.

“Cadence is an ideal health system to combine with, as their vision, mission and values are very similar to ours.

Together, we will continue to deliver the Northwestern Medicine brand promise, which is to provide trusted, quality care that is accessible where patients live and work – safe and accountable, and centered on world-class medicine.”

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board on July 14 unanimously approved Northwestern Memorial HealthCare’s application to combine health systems. Information on the merger also was sent to the Federal Trade Commission, which had a 30-day period

to review the organizations’ plans. The review period passed without any objections from the commission, King said.

The integration creates an expanded health delivery network encompassing more than 60 sites of care with about 1,600 inpatient beds total across metro Chicago and the north and western suburbs, according to the release.

The merged health system will include 19,500 employees, 7,600 of which are Cadence and a combined medical staff with 4,000 physicians, more than 1,400 of them from Cadence hospitals, King said.

King confirmed that the merger was completed without any staff reductions, and that the health system would have a greater likelihood of increasing its workforce instead.

Harrison remains president and CEO of the expanded health system, and Mike Vivoda, Cadence Health’s

president and CEO, will be the group’s regional president of its Western Region.

Other Cadence execu tives that will transition to Northwestern Memorial HealthCare include John Orsini, Cadence CFO and executive vice president, who will be named the merged group’s CFO and senior vice

president. Liz Rosenberg, Cadence’s executive vice president of strategy and administration, was named the group’s senior vice president of strategy.

“Our union is great for patients because it positions us to continue to provide unrivaled quality care within our communities,” Vivoda said.

FIRE BRINGS HOPE Kitchen at The Office destroyed, but restaurant owner aims to reopen in a couple of weeks

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A fire early Wednesday morning left The Office Dining & Spirits uninhabitable for the time being, but owner Sean Williams said he hopes to reopen in a couple of weeks.

“We should be ready to go in a couple of weeks,” Williams said. “The kitchen is completely destroyed, but the rest is only smoke and water damage.”

St. Charles firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $125,000 in damage to the structure and contents of The Office, which is at 201 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles.

St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said that the fire is not considered suspicious.

On Wednesday afternoon, employees from Assurance Cleaning and Restoration were doing cleanup work inside the restaurant.

Williams has owned the building for 19 years.

The Office has been open since January 2011.

Before that, McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub had occupied the space for 15 years, Williams said.

The structure was built in the 1840s and was the location of St. Charles Office Supply for many years.

The restaurant employs 61 people.

“We’re going to make sure all 61 of our employees are taken care of in the next couple of weeks when we are closed,” Williams said.

The fire started at 6:01 a.m.

The Office was closed.

Williams said he was called about the fire at 6:03 a.m. from an individual who was set to clean the building.

“I could see a big cloud of smoke as I was driving into the downtown,” Williams said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke showing from the roof of the building.

When they entered the building, firefighters found a fire above the ceiling in the kitchen area of the restaurant.

The fire was extinguished in an hour, but firefighters remained at the scene completing the investigation.

“I could not be more pleased with the cooperation of the fire and police departments,” Williams said.

Mickey Davenport, one of the owners of Avenue Two Hair Styling, located across Main Street from The Office, said he was surprised when he arrived at work at 8:10 a.m. and saw the fire trucks in the street.

“I hate to see anything bad

happen,” Davenport said.

“The place is always packed.”

Williams said he is grate-

ful for the offers of help he has received from neighboring businesses, such as Ron On-

Kane County’s $2M budget gap narrows Joe Onzick, Kane County’s executive finance director, said the projected $2.088 million budget gap has been reduced by these measures: -$185,000 – Fine tuning sewer and water expense calculations -$280,000 – Reducing court services health and dental budget and floating headcount -$50,000 – Transfer court services juvenile custody expense to probation services fund -$25,000 – Reducing state’s attorney’s expenses -$270,000 – Downward revision of health insurance rate increase -$175,000 – Additional savings from allowable health insurance plan design changes and negotiations -$90,000 – Holding coroner to three-year flat budget agreement +$29,000 – Impact of reduction to general fund riverboat grant gap so the County Board on Oct. 14 can vote to place the budget on public display.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen thanked those, including the chief judge and state’s attorney, who have contributed to the reduction.

“It sets such a good example,” he said.

County Board member John Hoscheit, who chairs the Finance/Budget Committee, echoed those sentiments. The process, he said, “has been done with a spirit of cooperation.”

Hoscheit didn’t express concerns about eliminating the remaining projected deficit. He said it likely would be worked out without significant impact on services.

Considering the budget as a whole, he said, “This budget gap is fairly small.”

In other news, Onzick said that as of July 31 the current budget year was about twothirds completed. Overall, he said, total general fund operating revenue might be $1.9 million more than budgeted, and operating expenses might be $800,000 less than budgeted.

He said there are no budget concerns, but the coroner’s office is projecting an overage in the general fund of about $100,000.

Onzick’s report also indicated the purchasing department has prepared a request for proposals for a walk-in cooler and freezer for the coroner’s office.

NORMAN O’DELL Norman “Larry” O’Dell, of St. Charles, was born June 20, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio.

In his youth, he was a boxer in South Charleston, West Virginia. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1949 to 1953, on the USS Saufley.

He met his wife, Sheila, at the Highland Cab Company of Chicago, where they were both employed.

He was proud of his many terms of service as a juror in Kane County.

He was a depression era child.

He farmed and gardened into his final days. He could tell a good joke, and hold an audience with his

many stories; most were about his naval experiences and his boxing days. He was competitive in his baseball, golf and bowling leagues.

He could hunt, fish, skin, scale, and cook his catch. He was a survivor, a fighter, a devoted husband, and an anchoring father. He made sure his kids had what he didn’t receive as a child. He was liked by many, and loved by his family. He was passionate in his own way.

In his retirement, he split his time between Illinois, and his home in Leesburg, Florida, where he was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Okahumpka, Florida.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sheila E. “McAtee” O’Dell; 4 children, son, Joe (Donna, nee Navin) O’Dell , of Glendale Heights, IL; daughter, Julianne Frerichs, of Wheaton, IL; sons, Owen O’Dell, of St. Charles, IL, Clayton O’Dell and partner, Kelly Vogel, of High Top, AL; brother, Steve O’Dell of Chicago, IL; sisters, Darlene Lerfald, of Nashville, TN, Ada Sue Hill of Streamwood,

GENEVA – Kane County officials have a three-week deadline to make about $800,000 in cuts from next year’s proposed general fund budget, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told a County Board committee Wednesday.

“We do appreciate the progress that’s been made,” he said, noting voluntary reductions from various offices and departments.

The $2.088 million gap between projected revenues and expenditures has been reduced to about $1.042 million through such measures as holding the coroner to the three-year flat budget agreement, reducing the state’s attorney’s expenses and fine tuning sewer and water expense calculations, Onzick said.

Additionally, he said, the chief judge Wednesday morning notified him about $250,000 in probation salary reimbursements, which will reduce the gap to about $800,000.

10 Chicken coop catches fire in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A house on the city’s southwest side sustained damage Wednesday when a backyard chicken coop caught fire, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 900 block of South Seventh Street at 12:08 p.m., he said. He noted a neighbor called it in, as the residents were not home.

The cause of the fire was related to a fan that was installed in the chicken coop to assist with air movement, Schelstreet said, according to a news release issued by the fire department. Damage is estimated at $10,000, according to the release.

Schelstreet said the fire, which did extend to the house, was extinguished in about 15 minutes.

The chickens did not survive, he said.

Damage to the house was limited to the exterior, he said.

With dance genres such as ballet and tap considered classics, and even more recent styles such as jazz and hip-hop now becoming staples of a dance student’s repertoire, it’s hard to think that there could be anything new worth bellying up to the barre for.

But this season’s Dance Academy at the St. Charles Park District offers so many innovative opportunities to perform and compete, create and experiment, that dancers of all ages will be kicking up their heels.

From “Tiny Tappers” for children ages 2½ to 4 years of age, to “Musical Theater” for older, but not necessarily seasoned dancers ages 7 to 13, the classes offered this fall reflect the desire of Recreation Supervisor Melissa Weaver to bring the art of dance to everyone.

“I want to be open to all the possibilities,” she said.

Among those possibilities is the chance to dance for public audiences and strut your stuff in area competitions through the academy’s “Company Dance” programs, a relatively new part of the curriculum.

Comprised of audition-based, ensemble teams of girls ages 6 to 17, the program this year has expanded into two groups: Company One is for younger and beginning dancers, while Company Two is made up of more advanced and older students.

Both groups will have multiple opportunities to perform in public this year, the first being the upcoming Scarecrow Fest on Oct. 11.

With classes beginning Sept. 5, this gives the teams only slightly more than a month to prepare three different numbers!

“This is the first time the Dance Academy will be appearing at Scarecrow Fest,” Weaver said. “My goal has been to find the group more performance opportunities.

Girls love performing, so the more opportunities we can find for them, the better.”

The performances will

also give dancers more confidence and poise going into upcoming competitions such as “Dance Idol” and those conducted by other park districts in the Chicago suburbs.

Of course, behind every accomplished dancer is an inspiring teacher, and Weaver is thrilled to be introducing three new instructors to the staff this year to join veteran Dance Coordinator Mary Trinco.

A current member of the academy’s Company Dance team, high school student Allison Cole will be teaching beginning ballet to 5and 6-year-olds.

“I love being able to hire instructors who come from our program, because we know we’ve trained them properly,” Weaver said.

In addition to Cole, Samantha Newman will be teaching tap classes at all levels, and Gina Gerardi will teach hip-hop, jazz and ballet/tap combo classes.

“I am very excited about our staff,” Weaver said.

“The key to having a successful program is having great teachers. We’re able to provide highly trained instructors at an affordable rate.”

Indeed, affordability is the third element in the changes Weaver has instituted to this year’s dance program.

Monthly payment plan options are available for year-long classes that run September through May, and a 10 percent discount off the total registration is available when registering a child for two or more classes in the dance recital program.

This encourages students to try out more than one discipline, said Weaver.

So, whether a dancer just does it for kicks or wants to dance up a storm, the park district’s Dance Academy roster of classes offers something for dancers of all ages and all levels.

As the popular TV show asks, “So, you think you can dance?”

Geneva District 304 approves $100.3M budget

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva School District 304 Board this week unanimously approved its 2014-15 budget of $100.3 million in expenditures and $95.5 million in revenue. It includes a shortfall of nearly $5 million.

After a public hearing, the board voted 7-0 to approve the new spending plan.

Expenditures include the expansion of programming, which includes the addition of all-day kindergarten at all six elementary schools and the introduction of a 1-to-1 technology program for all fifth-graders.

Programming expansion also will include Project Lead the Way – a curriculum that combines science, technology, engineering and math at the middle schools and high school, officials said.

The district is purposefully spending down fund balances in the operations and maintenance fund for capital projects and technology infrastructure and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, to more accurately reflect each year’s actual needs, officials said.

The deficit reflected in the debt service fund is there because the officials purposefully levied about $3 million less than needed as outlined in its debt reduction plan and is using abatement dollars from the education fund to make bond payments, officials said.

Donna Oberg, the district’s assistant superintendent for business, said it is difficult to add programming and still have a balanced education budget, which was accomplished this year.

With Senate Bill 16 still pending, however, Oberg wrote it might be more difficult to accomplish this in the future.

Senate Bill 16 would reduce general state aid for some districts and increase it for others based on several factors including the poverty level, Oberg wrote.

“For Geneva, if passed, this would mean a reduction of 79.9 percent or approximately $1.9 million. It is an equalization for all districts to make it more fair,” she wrote.

Oberg also wrote the district’s debt service budget is unbalanced because of the abatement process.

“We have less revenue from property taxes to make the bond payments but will use abatement funds set aside for this purpose,” Oberg wrote.

Legislation proposed by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White to allow a printed receipt from the Secretary of State to serve temporarily as the vehicle renewal sticker was signed into law by the governor.

As firefighters pulled shingles to ensure no fire remained, Popiel had one thought.

“It could have been way worse,” she said.

She and her 14-year-old daughter were in her bedroom of the Persimmon Court house mid-afternoon when a neighbor pounded on the front door, alerting them to the fire, she said.

The neighbor, Julie White, said her 16-year-old daughter, Nina, noticed the dark smoke as they walked the family dog, a miniature poodle named Sadie.

Nina, who sat on a lawn near the fire-damaged home, said she thought it was odd to see smoke on such a warm day.

“Then we saw the flames,” the teen said.

St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said firefighters limited the spread of the fire and spread tarps over the home’s interior to help minimize damage.

“We got here very quickly,” he said.

The fire department responded to the reported house fire at 3:26 p.m. in the 800 block of Persimmon Court, according to a news release issued by the fire department. Firefighters found a small fire in the attic, as well as in the area of the attic fan.

According to the release, the cause of the fire is related to an attic fan that was installed to assist with air movement.

The loss was estimated at $10,000, according to the release.

Meanwhile, Popiel – who White said seemed calmer than her – reflected on what could have been. The fire, she said, could have happened while her family slept or while they were away, or it could have gone unnoticed by neighbors.

Batavia School Board members Tuesday approved the agreement at their meet-

ing.

The contract with the Batavia Educational Support Professional Association expired June 30.

Association members, by a vote of 61 to 19, approved the agreement Aug. 13. The new contract includes a 65-cent hourly increase for support

staff in the 2014-15 school year, with a future hourly increase tied to the consumer price index used in the district’s tax levy.

Other highlights of the new contract include: • Expansion of insurance benefits for dependent coverage.

• Modifying the work year for early childhood paraprofessionals.

• Creating a staff development calendar for BESPA employees.

NORTH AURORA – Members of the North Aurora Fire Department, along with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will celebrate their 60-year partnership and kick off the firefighters’ annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to benefit children and adults affected by muscle disease throughout the Northern Illinois area.

D-101 lease proposal under scrutiny Residents concerned building owner will profit at expense of taxpayers

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A proposal for Batavia School District 101 to lease a building owned by a former Batavia School Board president is receiving scrutiny from residents.

Batavia School Board members have directed school administrators to pursue leasing a building at 804 Main St. in Batavia owned by Ron Link, who did not run for re-election after a term that ended in 2013.

A special board meeting is tentatively set for 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the lease.

The district is considering leasing the building to replace Batavia High School’s aging maintenance building. During

Yvonne Dinwiddie, Batavia resident a health and life-safety inspection of the 48-year-old maintenance shop in September 2013, Batavia School District 101 was cited for a number of violations and was told that immediate corrections needed to be made, including the installation of a sprinkler and fire alarm system, and to cover the foam insulation installed on the underside of the roof deck.

Those repairs are estimated to cost $130,000. Brown had told school board members the

current maintenance building poses a risk to staff, and the district needs to make improvements in that space or shut it down.

As proposed, the district would lease Link’s building for $12,000 a month, with the intention of owning it in 10 years, Pat Browne, the district’s director of buildings and grounds, had told school board members.

Resident Yvonne Dinwiddie questioned the proposed lease.

Dinwiddie said the lease would

enrich Link at the expense of taxpayers.

“Whether it works or not, we will be ensuring that his property suffers no loss, as he will be guaranteed rent to the tune of $144,000 per year,” she said. “Meanwhile, other building owners are struggling to find renters. We, the taxpayers, will assume the risk while he receives the rewards.”

Browne said the current maintenance building is at the end of its useful life expectancy. According to the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, the expected service life of that building is 51.6 years.

During Tuesday’s meeting, resident Sylvia Keppel questioned whether that estimate was accurate.

BOOMERS GETTING CATARACT SURGERY SOONER According to the National Eye Institute, nearly half of all U.S. adults either have a cataract or have undergone cataract surgery by age 80. However, increasing numbers of Baby Boomers are not waiting that long to have their clouded eye lenses surgically removed and replaced with clear, manmade, intraocular lenses. The reason behind this earlier surgical intervention has to do with the fact that many people begin developing cataracts in their forties. Once they become aware that their symptoms of hazy vision and glare from lights are caused by cataracts, they choose to do something about it. Thus, more patients in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are electing to undergo cataract surgery instead of waiting.

The spokesperson said medal recipients also receive $5,000.

The goal of the National Medal Program is to support exceptional institutions whose commitment to their community goes beyond what one expects of a museum or library, according to its website.

In all, 142 institutions have received the medal since 1994, 13 from Illinois and only one them from Kane County – the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin in 2009.

Emma said with the recent rebranding from history center to museum and reopening a refurbished main gallery featuring “Geneva’s Story” this past weekend, the Geneva History Museum is raising its profile.

“Our goal is to become the first nationally accredited museum in Kane County,” Emma said. “If we are nationally accredited, that means we are validated by the American Alliance of Museums ... that we meet or exceed the standards for museums, and that’s huge.

There is no reason why we would not be able to achieve that goal.”

GENEVA – The Geneva History Museum was nominated for the 2015 National Medal for Museum Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community, officials said.

The nomination came from U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, said Terry Emma, the Geneva History Museum executive director.

The museum is at 113 S. Third St., Geneva.

“You have to be nominated to apply for the medal,” Emma said. “And to have [the nomination] come from Congressman Hultgren means a lot, it gives it more gravitas, more backing. This kind of an award ... validates what we do and, in turn, can help us raise money in the future. It is kind of a big deal.”

Emma said their application is due Oct. 15. A spokesperson for the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington, D.C., said recipients are notified in the spring and receive their medals in a public ceremony.

GENEVA – Firefighters were called to put out a fire Wednesday in a plastic garbage can in an alley behind businesses on the northwest corner of State and Third streets, Fire Chief Steve Olson said.

No one was hurt, and the only damage was to the garbage can, he said.

The fire was called in at 1:30 p.m., and when firefighters arrived, local business owners already were spraying it with extinguishers, Olson said.

“We finished it up with water,” he said. “There was smoke. It was a minor incident. It is not suspicious at this time. We don’t have a cause.”

Dorm sweet dorm Although it shouldn’t come as a surprise, it’s weird to call myself a “college student.” A few weeks ago, I started at Illinois State University, and I really feel like I’m starting to get the swing of things.

I’ll admit it was a little hard transitioning the first week; I still miss my family and my friends and all the stuff I left at home. I definitely cried on move-in day, but I’m excited for my college adventure.

Our Welcome Week went pretty smoothly. All the elevators were working when everyone moved in; all my stuff (read: shoes) fits into my space; and the weather was great. The information overload and constant plugs for clubs and organizations were a little annoying, but I know that’ll die down soon.

I’m so grateful my dorm has worked out better than I could ever imagine. Our set up is perfect, giving us each our own space with plenty of open room in the middle. My roommates are all awesome – we are all chill and respect each others’ differences.

Although two of them knew each other before this year, I’ve never felt excluded or unwelcome.

I’m beginning to warm up to the small selection of food in the dining hall – partially because it’s getting better, and partially because it’s the only food around here that won’t put a dent in my wallet. That said, I still can’t wait to eat Brigid food when I get home!

I have to give credit to my AP teachers from high school – they created a classroom environment that isn’t too far off from the ones I’ve experienced so far. The only exception is my geology lecture that has 640 kids in it – that’s bigger than my high school graduating

LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman class. There’s still a sense of casualness in my classes; some of my professors even let us call them by their first names. I know once the semester really gets into swing, my workload will be a bit heavier than what I’m used to. I’m really excited to start my major sequence; I’m studying publishing, and I’ll be able to officially apply for the track after I finish up some gen-eds.

I’m certainly getting my exercise every day.

From walking to the dining hall and various classes to almost exclusively using the stairs to get to my sixth floor dorm (the elevators are really slow), I don’t feel like I ever need to go to the gym!

One thing that’s really surprised me is the number of kids I see smoking.

My campus unfortunately doesn’t have a smoke-free policy, so I’ve walked by many students lighting up. It’s hard to imagine someone my age making that kind of lifestyle choice.

Besides, it’s expensive and just plain gross.

D.C. aims for 2024 summer games THE WASHINGTON POST Washington, D.C., is in the running to be the nation’s official bid city for the 2024 Olympic summer games. Not surprisingly, the prospect of hosting the world’s largest sporting event has roused as much worry as excitement.

Imagine the traffic nightmare!

The crowds! The costs! Those are just a few of the concerns, and they cannot be discounted.

At the same time, the region should take satisfaction in the attributes that have made it a competitive choice and be open to the possibilities the Olympics could create.

Washington emerged this summer as a finalist, as did Los Angeles, San Francisco

and Boston, in the competition to be this country’s possible nominee to host the 2024 Summer Games. Making that cut is just the first step in an arduous process before the International Olympic Committee awards the games in 2017. Indeed, still up in the air is whether the United States – which saw disappointing fourth-place finishes for its candidates for the 2012 and 2016 games – will put forth a nominee in a field that is expected to include Paris; Rome; Doha, Qatar; and Istanbul. The IOC also might want to deliver on its long-stated desire for a first-ever Olympics in Africa.

Nonetheless, there is some sentiment, as The Post’s Liz Clarke reported, the time may be right for a bid by the

U.S. committee, which sat out the 2020 bidding process.

Washington has been rejected before as the country’s nominee, but DC2024 – the nonprofit exploratory committee spearheading the effort – is advancing a strategy that focuses on the advantages of the region: existing sports venues in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia; three airports; and proven experience in hosting big events.

Rigorous study will be needed to determine the advantages and disadvantages of hosting the games, and there must be a full understanding of the costs. Whether Washington has the wherewithal to be host city is yet to be determined. But it’s good to be in the game.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Batavia author makes fiction come to life W. Ward Neuman has penned successful action tales

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The true life story of hijackers who robbed a busload of tourists in Guatemala provided the inspiration for Batavia resident W. Ward Neuman’s first venture into writing a novel.

Kane County reporter Eric Schelkopf spoke to Neuman about his book “Seeking Justice,” which revolves around three millionaires who decide to use their energy, determination, and resources to help others solve the problems and injustices that “the system” cannot.

leaned back and said, ‘Wow, I did it.’

Then I got it published and I started getting feedback from people.

Some people thought the book should be made into a movie. A couple of people said they couldn’t put it down. A lot of people said it should be a television series.

And many, many people asked when there was going to be a sequel. I kind of left a couple of things hanging in the book, which gave me room to do something I wasn’t planning to do.

I wrote the second one, and I realized I was having fun. My publisher asked me to write a third book (“Delivering Justice”) since the other ones had done well, and now I have done three.

The big question now is do I do a fourth or not? At the moment, I’m saying I don’t think so, but that could change.

Eric Schelkopf: Your first book was based on an actual incident involving your sister.

W. Ward Neuman: Well, it’s kind of a funny thing. She got over it. She was never actually traumatized.

She was more angry and saddened at the loss of her things of value. I was the one who got really upset about it, thinking that people exist who can go out and do that. And apparently, they were doing it again and again.

And obviously with corruption and graft and bribes, they were getting away with it. It stayed in my mind for a long time and then I started writing about it. And it was like a catharsis.

Schelkopf: Was this an idea that you had even before this incident?

Neuman: No. I had been an author before. I had written three non-fiction books in my field of investing in real estate.

I was in demand at seminars and conventions and investment clubs. And after being successful at writing those three books, I had the idea of writing fiction.

The thing about most fiction is that there is generally one story – the hero is going after a bad guy and it takes the whole book to unravel the plot and get to the end, where he gets his just

My books are different, because there’s seven or eight situations or adventures in each book, where my guys hear about different people not receiving justice from the system after they’ve been wronged in different ways.

So, there’s lot of stories contained in the book, each time leading up to a grand finale of a great big story.

Schelkopf: And then you wrote a sequel, “Finding Justice.” How did that come about?

Neuman: I finished the book, and I

Schelkopf: Why do you think the books have connected so well with people?

Neuman: Well, I can’t say that I’m a brilliant writer like Ernest Hemingway. He had a flair and a way with words.

But I make the plots interesting and I make the characters believable. A couple of the nicest compliments I have had from people is when they say, ‘It may be fiction, but it sure seems real.’

And that’s a really nice compliment to an author.

Salsa Verde serves authentic, delicious dishes ST. CHARLES – Kane County has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, but you should make room for one of the latest offerings on St. Charles’ west side.

Salsa Verde Mexican Restaurant & Taquería, 1850 Lincoln Highway, St. Charles, offers authentic Mexican food and a fun, colorful atmosphere.

The restaurant immediately sets the tone for its diners with the bright lime green exterior of its building. On the inside, you’ll find all of the traditional Mexican restaurant staples, along with a salsa bar that includes eight different choices prepared daily.

A group of friends and I decided to dine in during a recent August lunch hour. We were greeted to the sounds of the Dominican Republic guitar music known as bachata, an impressive color picture menu board and one of the courteous owners, who was manning a cash register.

While we waited a few minutes for our orders to come out, we snacked on great-tasting chips and a hearty mild salsa.

We also sampled some of the salsa bar, including the one the restaurant is named for. Don’t let the creamy texture of the green salsa – “salsa verde” in Spanish – fool you, it is quite spicy and you will only need a smidgen of it to give your dishes a kick.

Speaking of dishes, I skipped the standard carne asada and instead ordered the Carne a la Mexicana after the owner recommended it. This meant my skirt steak would be served with grilled vegetables, red sauce and cheese.

The steak was tender and the sauce, cheese and veggies added layer upon layer of flavor to my lunch. The standard sides of refried beans and authentic red rice did not disappoint either. It was well worth the extra $2.50 over the $9.49 carne asada.

beef (also available with chicken), beans, lettuce, diced tomato and sour cream, all on those yummy chips oozing with melted cheese. My friend said it was like “falling into a vat of wonderful.”

Sour cream and cheese also topped off a third friend’s perfectly spiced Steak Tacos, which are $1.85 each with toppings at $.50 each. She also ordered a large $4.49 guacamole and chips appetizer that was, in her words, “amazing.” This friend also frequents the restaurant’s drive-thru, which she said is quick and convenient.

Portions are definitely plentiful at this restaurant. A fourth friend’s order of two tamales – one chicken and one pork – tasted good, were filling and the largest she’d ever eaten, she said.

From this lunch outing it was evident that the Salsa Verde menu is reliable if you have a favorite dish or taco you like to order every time, or if you want to try something new from its large menu. You will remember Salsa Verde for its bright green building, and especially for its food.

Schelkopf: You talked about the album

Nettles: Yeah, I do, just by the nature of it being a solo project. It can’t help but be more personal, because the only person I’m representing within it is me.

Schelkopf: I know you wrote the songs for the album with a variety of people, including

Nettles: It’s something I had been wanting to do for a long time I think the timing was just right in that I had a good deal of down time. But I left it open. I didn’t know what I was going to feel as a new mom, and when I was going to be ready to get back in.

Schelkopf: What do you view as your biggest achievement in your career?

Nettles: I love whenever I’m both recognized as both a writer and a singer. I won a Grammy award for writing the song “Stay,” which was a high, high honor. But there are also fun moments, like being on “Sesame Street” and I loved singing at President Barack Obama’s first inauguration, which was an incredible moment.

Schelkopf: Of course, your Sugarland band mate Kristian Bush is releasing his own solo album. What’s the term you use to describe the status of Sugarland these days? Are you on hiatus?

Nettles: Yeah, that’s what we’ve been saying. We left it really open ended, because I don’t think one can put a timeline on creativity. Who knows what we are going to want to do and how long we’re going to want to do it? We are both enjoying what we are doing. It feels like a win-win.

Eric Schelkopf: How have people been responding to your new songs on the tour?

Jennifer Nettles: Overall, the response for the new album and the whole project has been really, really positive. It is an opportunity to sort of redefine and recreate myself, and reintroduce myself musically, which is super fun.

It’s been great to go and play venues that support sort of the nuance and the intimacy of this album. And I’ve been having a blast doing it, so it’s good.

Schelkopf: You write with Kristian Bush in Sugarland. Was it hard making the transition?

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Rivers about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: For people who come out to the show, what should they expect? Are you kind of going through the hits and then some?

Johnny Rivers: Well, you know, you always have to play the hits. But we always put in a lot of cuts from various albums, and I do a little acoustic set in the middle of the show.

It should be fun. We have some new arrangements on some of the old hits. It’s just a four-piece band – guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. It’s really kind of fun, because it’s just the basic rhythm section.

Schelkopf: But you like being just a four-piece?

Rivers: Well, it’s real comfortable for me. And I’m the guy who played guitar on most of those old records anyhow, so it’s easy for me.

Schelkopf: At age 15, you met disc jockey Alan Freed, known for coining the phrase “rock ‘n’ roll,” who convinced you to change your last name.

Rivers: On my first record,

I was using my family name, Ramistella. Back in those days, it wasn’t cool to have a long ethnic name. Everybody had shortened their name. He asked me where I grew up, and I told him Baton Rouge, which is on the Mississippi River. He says, ‘Why don’t we call you Johnny River?’ It became Rivers. But my dad didn’t like it. He wanted me to keep the family name. He really didn’t care for it until I had my first big hit.

Schelkopf: And I’m sure you will be playing “Secret Agent Man” at the Arcada.

Rivers: I have young guitar players come up to me who have said they learned guitar playing “Secret Agent Man,” including Eddie Van Halen.

That’s a pretty good compliment. But I also played the guitar on all those other records, “Memphis” and “Seventh Son” and “Mountain Of Love.” I came up with some interesting guitar riffs that were recognizable, especially the openings.

Schelkopf: Out of all your accomplishments, is there anything you are most proud of?

Rivers: Just everything. I’m proud of what I’ve done. I’ve worked with a lot of other artists. I was one of the guys who put together the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and performed on it the first night along with Simon & Garfunkel. That was the first music festival. After that, they did Woodstock and started doing festivals everywhere. But it was nice to be part of that first one, which went off without a hitch. No one got arrested, no one died and no one went to jail.

Wheaton Academy comes back from Game 1 loss to win opener

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – The Batavia and Wheaton Academy girls volleyball teams spared no drama in their season openers.

The Warriors dug out of an early hole Wednesday and played the pressure points well late in the match to turn back the visiting Bulldogs, 2225, 25-18, 25-22.

Wheaton Academy coach D.A. Nichols made a decision to ride the Warriors’ prolific outside hitter duo of Samantha Krill and Sydney Vischer in crunch time, and it paid off.

“I told [setter Alecia Funk], we’re going to feed Sam and Syd the ball,” Nichols said.

“We always want to try and spread it out and get everyone involved but they were having a hard time stopping them at that point. I literally told Alecia our setter, ‘You can give them the ball every time, I don’t care if they’re ready or not.’ ” Krill finished with 15 kills and Vischer had 14 while Funk registered 33 assists in her varsity debut.

Batavia led the third set, 17-13, after an ace by Marielle Eustace, capping a three-point run at the service line for the defensive specialist.

But Wheaton Academy swiftly reclaimed momentum, catching the Bulldogs at 19-all before pulling away in the late stages. Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne was visibly angered by a net violation call on the last point of the match.

Batavia started well as middle hitter Anna Clausen took over a close Game 1, recording a trio of late kills to give the Bulldogs the win.

Momentum remained in the Bulldogs’ corner early in the second game as Batavia zipped to a 6-2 lead. But the Warriors then reeled off nine straight points to take control,

Open daily from 9 a.m. until dusk from March through November, weather permitting, the course is located on 6.4 acres along the north side of Campton Hills Road, west of Peck Road.

According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, disc golf is played much like traditional golf, but instead of a ball and clubs, disc golf utilizes a flying disc (as opposed to a club) and elevated metal baskets (as opposed to a hole).

Players start each hole at a teeing area and play toward a target hole, a metal pole outfitted with an elevated basket.

The course at Community Park runs through the wooded areas and follows the naturally

rolling terrain. Each hole is par three and changes in elevation and thick groves of trees make this course challenging, according to the St. Charles Park District website.

The St. Charles Park District brochure calls this sport an ideal activity for families and it can be played by one or more players. However, you’ll need to bring your own equipment – a disc or Frisbee.

The Professional Disc Golf Association advises that disc golf can be played from school age to old age, making it a lifetime fitness sport. Those who are specially-abled and disabled are also able to play the sport, giving them an opportunity to play a mainstream activities.

A typical round of disc golf can be completed in one- to two-hours.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East boys and girls golfers differed vastly in their reactions to Wednesday’s post-practice activity.

Where the boys upheld the silent treatment, the girls sprinted down a small hill at Royal Fox Country Club and beelined toward their mothers.

Or, better yet, waiting towels.

Of course, no “Quiet, Please” placards were present as the programs united to take the ALS ice bucket challenge. Good thing, because boys coach John Stock and girls counterpart Rod Osborne weren’t at a loss for words about the benefactor.

The late Sue Niemiec, who died from the disease in June 2013, was the mother of former Saints golfers Chris and Jenny.

“We’re honored to do this little demonstration and this challenge and this fun activity in memory of Sue,” Stock said as part of his opening remarks introducing the challenge.

“And although it’s fun, we hope the real challenge is rais-

ing money for ALS, so please contribute so we can stop this awful disease. Sue, this one’s for you.”

The girls dumped ice buckets on the boys before the boys returned the favor.

Osborne, as if tearing into “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at Wrigley Field, started by saying, “A one, a two, a three,” before motioning for the girls to tip their buckets.

Osborne and Stock doused each other, two men who had guided the Niemiec siblings in respective IHSA state tournaments. Chris Niemiec, a 2008 East product, is working toward a full-time professional golf career. Jenny Niemiec, a recent Northern Illinois graduate who golfed for the Huskies, is a 2010 East alum.

“Rod and I could have done it to each other, as other people have, but I think it was more get the kids involved, you know. Varsity-varsity,” Stock said. “So we talked about it two weeks ago. The girls thought it was a good idea, my boys thought it was a good idea, so there we go.”

St. Charles native following football dream in Oregon So many kids grow up in the United States dreaming of playing their favorite sport at the highest level. In college football, there aren’t many levels higher than the Pac-12 Conference and the University of Oregon.

So when St. Charles native and college football kicker Alec Eickert decided he wanted to step up his level of competition, he made the switch from the 2,000-student, NAIA-member Taylor University in Indiana to the 24,000-student, perennial Pac-12 title contender Oregon Ducks.

Or, as he put it, he’s following the dream.

“My previous school, Taylor University, was a phenomenal university. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about that. Academically, it was awesome, but unfortunately, athletically, it just wasn’t what I was looking for,” Eickert said. “I was playing football and track over there, and I knew I wanted to pursue football at a higher level at a big-time school. So that was my reason for leaving.

Honestly, just following the dream.”

After spending two years at Taylor, Eickert made the cross-country move to Eugene, Oregon. He said he has absolutely loved the experience so far, one that has delivered exactly what he was looking for.

“I love it,” he said.

“High-level competition pushes me to get better every single day, and that’s exactly what I was looking for. I knew coming in here, regardless of really where I stood athletically and on the depth chart and whatnot, I knew the experience within itself was going to be exactly what I wanted. So far being over here has been awesome. It’s been a phenomenal experience, and I can’t wait for the season to get going.”

Switching schools, however, is nothing new for Eickert.

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber While he said there are many differences between living in the Midwest and living in the Pacific Northwest, he’s had experience acclimating.

He spent his first three years of high school at St. Charles North before transferring to Aurora Christian for his final year of high school.

Although attending four schools in five years might seem like a whirlwind of new places for some, Eickert said he loves the change and the new challenges.

“It definitely wasn’t easy moving 40 hours away. But it’s been a great process,” Eickert said. “Being around this program makes the transition extremely easy. All the guys within this program help to make the transition easy, they make this place feel like home. Transferring before definitely made the situation easier. Every time I’ve transferred, it’s kind of been into a new environment. … But I’ve loved coming to it, I love change and the opportunities that come with it. So I feel very confident with my decision.”

Eickert certainly is digging what he referred to as the “chill vibe” of living in Oregon, although he also said he misses Portillo’s and Chicago food. But when it comes to being at a top-flight college football program, he thinks he couldn’t have asked for anything better.

The Ducks are about as good as it gets – a third-ranked team in this season’s preseason Associated Press rankings – and Eickert said it shows.

“It’s special. And you can tell there’s definitely a different vibe out here that they have a top-notch program,” he said. “The coaches are

Big game for bubble guys Several Bears fighting for spots on regular season roster

Well, then you can set your focus to the several Bears fighting for a job Thursday night in the preseason finale in Cleveland. Here are some of those players on the bubble, hoping to put one more good performance on tape for the Bears, or one of the other 31 teams, to earn a roster spot:

Defensive ends Austen Lane, David Bass and Cornelius Washington: Trevor Scott clearly has won the job as the Bears’

No. 4 defensive end, so these three are fighting for one, potentially two, spots should the Bears want to carry 10 defensive linemen.

Lane is ahead of the two second-year players on the depth chart and had a sack against Seattle. It appears to be his spot to lose. Bass showed flashes last season and has had a couple nice plays in the preseason, while Washington hasn’t matched his potential.

Linebackers Christian Jones and Jerry Franklin: Linebacker is suddenly a position of concern for the Bears, and with Jordan Senn gone, they should want to carry a sixth.

If it comes purely down to special teams, Franklin obviously has the edge.

He played it last year for

the team in 10 games and has been a member of the first-team coverage units this preseason.

He led the Bears in special teams snaps in Seattle. Jones has the upside as a linebacker, but hasn’t shown it in the preseason or in camp and has been buried on the depth chart.

He’ll get plenty of snaps against the Browns and might not make it through waivers to get to the practice squad because of his potential.

Defensive backs C.J. Wilson, Demontre Hurst and M.D. Jennings: Let’s assume the Bears keep 10 defensive backs, and that Kelvin Hayden, Sherrick McManis and Chris Conte are roster locks, giving them five corners and four safeties.

One of these three players,

likely based on his abilities on special teams, could take a final roster spot. Wilson got some time with the active roster last season and has two interceptions.

Hurst was with the practice squad in 2013 and leads the team with 15 tackles in the preseason.

Jennings, a former Packer, has the most NFL experience, and will get plenty of reps at safety.

Returner Chris Williams: It’s starting to look like Josh Morgan and Santonio Holmes will make this team at receiver, but the Bears still need a return man, and their hope is that Williams, in his first opportunity, will show the much-talked-about speed, take the job and guarantee himself a roster spot.

Eickert won’t be playing this year, sitting out as a transfer because of NCAA rules.

But he still is preparing for the upcoming season, which starts Saturday. He won’t get to participate in 2014 game action at a filled-to-capacity Autzen Stadium – which seats 54,000 people – but he has an important role, and he’s going to play it to the best of his ability.

“Just help my team out as much as I can right now, just to contribute in positive ways and overall make the team better,” Eickert said. “Due to my transfer, I’m ineligible my first year, so I’ll take care of all scout-team duties this year.

And then the following year, I’ll be eligible to compete for depth chart spots along with starting positions. But as for now, every single person on this team plays a very unique role, and the coaches make it very clear to us, they make sure we know what our role is and why we’re here and make sure that we fulfill that role.

“And so honestly, just being around this team and understanding the high goals we’ve set for ourselves, every day I come to practice, I make sure that mentally I’m prepared and physically I do what needs to be done.”

Bears’ special teams a work in progress Over the past 10 seasons, Bears fans have been spoiled.

The Bears have been among the top-five specialty unit teams in the NFL for a decade and we all have taken it for granted.

Devin Hester is the greatest return man in the history of the NFL and he did it all as a Bear over eight seasons.

Now, because of the salary cap and the Bears’ reluctance to devote a roster spot to a specialist without a position on offense or defense, Hester is an Atlanta Falcon.

Patrick Mannelly is one of the best long snappers in the history of the NFL and now is retired and beginning a career as an all-sports talk show host on AM-670 The SCORE. The Bears’ top-seven special teams tacklers last year in order were Blake Costanzo, Craig Steltz, Sherrick McManis, Eric Weems, Anthony Walters, Dante Rosario and Michael Ford. All but McManis and Rosario are gone.

Through an entire offseason, training camp and three exhibition games the Bears have found no answers.

Is it just a bit disconcerting and unusual to be this uncertain about your special teams this close to the season?

Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis takes the high road.

“I’m glad it’s happening now instead of during the season, to be honest with you,” he said. “Looking at it from the positive viewpoint is: We’re getting things that we don’t want to have happen during the regular season. We can identify them and we can correct them. Sometimes you get a false sense in the regular season going in to where you’re not sure where the problems are coming from. I think our guys will rally to it and we’re going to get better. I’m going to coach them better.”

The problem is if they don’t have the talent to get it done.

Chris Williams was signed off the Saints’ practice squad after starring as a return man and receiver in Canada. He looked good at receiver early in camp, but before we even could see him return kicks, he pulled a hamstring on a 73-yard catch and run against

DeCamillis was asked who his kickoff return man would be in the final exhibition tonight in Cleveland.

“Well, obviously, we’d like to see Chris Williams, see what he can do. Senorise [Perry] took a couple of reps last week, which were positive – I think he averaged 25.7,” DeCamillis said. “Those two are probably the ones who are going to get most of the reps on kickoff return.”

If Williams can return at the NFL level, can the extremely undersized 5-foot-8inch, 170-pound receiver stay on the field?

Perry is an undrafted rookie free-agent running back out of Louisville, who only makes the team as a running back if the Bears cut Ka’Deem Carey or Tony Fiammetta, which isn’t likely to happen.

Coogan, Brydon shine in ‘The Trip to Italy’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now In 2011, American art house audiences were caught unaware by the delightful, hilarious, thought-provoking and delicious faux documentary “The Trip,” in which British actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, playing slightly skewed versions of themselves, drove all over England, dining in fine restaurants and publishing stories of their experiences.

That film began life as a mostly improvised six-part BBC TV series, directed by Michael Winterbottom, who then whittled it down to movie length for American consumption. Last year, the BBC dangled the carrot of a second helping, this time in Italy, in front of the director and stars, resulting in another six-part series. Now another movie, “The Trip to Italy,” is being served.

It’s more of a remake, rather than a sequel, featuring the two quick-witted, well-read, intelligent guys with a penchant for doing impersonations of movie stars once again hopping in a car, eating at fancy restaurants, making yummy sounds, chatting about literature, film and music, pining

about getting older, and holding one-on-one competitions involving who can do a better vocal impression of Michael Caine and Sean Connery.

Both films had outlines concerning what would be discussed at the restaurants and in the car, but then the A-one improvisatory skills of Coogan and Brydon were let loose, to hilarious effect, most notably when they launch into a lengthy and absurdly funny spree on how difficult it was to understand Tom Hardy’s muffled dialogue as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.”

There’s a suggestion that the two friends haven’t seen each other for a while, so there’s plenty for them to talk about, and topics end up ranging from the friendship and poetry of Lord Byron and Percy Shelley to the songs of Alanis Morrisette.

Because this a move that features food, taking place in a country that loves food, the focus keeps returning to the six restaurants they visit and dine at. It makes little sense that these guys would have assignments to review and report on food since they don’t seem to know much about it beyond what looks good and tastes good. But that’s never brought up, and the cameras

stay busy getting right up into their faces as they eat, and keep cutting away for quick glances into the busy kitchens where the meals are being prepared.

Yet the film is more about both the relationship between – and the private inner thoughts of – the two men, and there are moments that are quite moving. Amidst the comedy, it’s subtly revealed that when they’re not together, they’re both kind of lonely, and are each experiencing midlife crises. The divorced Coogan has uncomfortable Skype talks with his teenage son, and the supposedly happily married Brydon finds that his wife always has an excuse not to talk with him when he phones her. At night, in their separate hotel rooms, Coogan reads Byron aloud, and Brydon loses himself in rehearsing lines for an upcoming movie audition.

A major difference between the two films is that in the first one it was Coogan who was offered the writing assignment, and brought Brydon along, but this time it’s Brydon being asked to write the articles, and giving a call to Coogan. Both of them are once again presented as being between acting gigs, so are

able to get away. The other difference is that the first time around, Coogan played it as brash and ambitious and egotistical, and now he’s calmer, while Brydon gets to be the more rambunctious of the two.

But the main mood keeps returning to the comedy coming out of their constant banter. Coogan sometimes can’t even get a word in during a Brydon rant, and Winterbottom gives viewers the gift of leaving in a Capri-set sequence (yes, there are also boat rides) where Brydon cracks up Coogan for real.

The film runs a tad long and it ends too abruptly. But it’s hard to complain when there are so many comic tangents, such lovely drives through the bucolic countryside, an unexpected reverence displayed for the city of Pompeii, and, along with the poppy and raucous sounds of Alanis Morrisette, the glorious and sweeping ones of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler – a curious choice since neither was Italian.

Dear Abby: My mother-in-law is 80 and in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. She lives alone an hour and a half from us. She also has a professional who takes care of her once a week. My husband, “Fred,” goes to help and entertain her every weekend, and I sometimes accompany him. She has enough money to stay in an assisted living facility, but Fred wants to build a motherin-law apartment for her on our property.

Abby, I DON’T LIKE HER. She was a bully when she was younger, and she’s still manipulative. She has made some comments about me hitting her, which never happened. Of course, Fred believed me. If she lives with us, I will be her main caregiver because I have a homebased business and a flexible schedule.

Caring for someone who has Alzheimer’s disease is a full-time job because the disease is PROGRESSIVE. While Fred’s mother can live alone with the help of a professional once a week now, that

will soon not be the case. She will become increasingly helpless and so confused that should an emergency arise in her apartment she will be unable to think sequentially enough to know what to do.

She may no longer recognize who you are and become agitated and combative.

For these reasons your mother-in-law should be in an assisted living facility staffed with caregivers who have been trained to take care of people with Alzheimer’s. Because you have a business to run, it can’t be you.

Since Fred has made peace with his mother, he should visit her often to ensure she is well-treated. But he should NOT expect the responsibility of caring for her to be yours because it is unrealistic.

Age-related changes affect the GI tract Dear Doctor K: As I’ve entered my 70s, I’ve noticed that my eating and bowel habits have changed. Is this normal?

Dear Reader: Well, I could tell you what it says in the medical textbooks, or I could speak from personal experience. The answer would be the same: It sure is normal.

Aging most definitely affects our eating and bowel habits. The human digestive system – our gastrointestinal (GI) tract, or “gut” – is a series of hollow organs linked to form a long, twisting tube. It begins at the mouth and winds down through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. These organs break down food into components that the body can absorb and use for energy. What’s left is expelled by an efficient disposal system. (I’ve put an illustration of the GI tract on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Here are some age-related changes you may have noticed: • The mouth. As we age, the number and sensitivity of our taste buds decline. Our chewing muscles also weaken and we begin to lose teeth. The food we swallow next enters the tube that leads from the throat to the stomach, called the esophagus.

• The esophagus. Food does not simply drop down the esophagus;

When they are stimulated by the presence of a lump of chewed food, they just automatically squeeze the food downward.

Unfortunately, the muscles of the esophagus weaken as we age.

They contract less vigorously around food after swallowing, and this can make swallowing more difficult.

Weakened muscles in the esophagus also can cause a second problem. Muscles at the bottom of the esophagus, where it enters the stomach, normally squeeze down hard after food passes through.

This keeps stomach acid from squirting back up into the esophagus. When those muscles become weaker with age, it can contribute to acid reflux.

And it may make acid reflux and “heartburn” less of a problem.

But lower levels of stomach acid can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. That’s because stomach acid helps the small intestine absorb vitamin B12 in food. Lower levels of stomach acid also can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.

• The colon. The final stage of digestion happens in the colon, or large intestine. Just as happens in the esophagus, muscles in the wall of the colon squeeze the waste downward. Moving one’s bowels may be the most frequent GI challenge associated with aging. In general, people have more trouble having regular bowel movements after they reach age 65. Weakness and poor coordination of the muscles of the colon are a major reason for this.

Although our gut ages along with the rest of us, and that can contribute to some of the infirmities of growing older, there are effective treatments. We’ll discuss these in future columns.

• The stomach and small intestine.

The stomach is a storage and processing facility where food is prepared for digestion. The stomach produces acid, which helps break down food. As we age, the stomach

Now she is upset because I’m watching poker on TV. She told my dad that watching “that junk” will cause me to one day become a gambler. That’s simply not true. I watch murders on television and I’m never going to murder someone just because I saw a person murdered on television.

Now my dad has restricted me from watching poker on the tube, so I’ve got to go over to my friend’s house to watch Texas Hold ’Em. This week we are looking at active and passive defense. The defenders either strive to take winners (active) or sit back and wait for declarer to give them tricks (passive). First, the defenders listen to the auction. But when that does not help them to know which plan to adopt, they must take the dummy into account. Is it threatening or not?

Threatening is a dummy with a short suit, giving declarer ruffing tricks, or a long side suit, offering declarer a second source of winners. Unthreatening is a balanced hand.

In this example, how should East defend against four spades after West leads the diamond two and East takes dummy’s queen with his king?

I would have raised to three no-trump with that North hand because of the strong doubleton – and gone down in flames after a diamond lead.

East, since the dummy is so flat, should return a diamond at trick two, which removes that dummy entry.

If declarer is psychic, he can make the contract: heart to the queen, two rounds of trumps, diamond ruff in the dummy, second heart finesse, cash the heart ace, and run the club nine. East wins with his 10 and returns a low club, but South plays low from his hand to lose only one diamond and two clubs. However, he is unlikely to find that line and will go down.

With a relatively flat dummy, stay passive.
