Top Table restaurant to open in St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A restaurant offering American cuisine with a twist plans to open early next month, its owner said.

Hampshire residents Nathan and Amanda Drafall plan to open Top Table restaurant to the public for dinner during the first weekend in September at 1 W. Illinois St., Suite 170, St. Charles.

The St. Charles City Council on Aug. 18 voted, 8-2, in favor of a liquor license for the restaurant.

Fourth Ward aldermen Jim Martin and Jo Krieger continued their longstanding practice of voting no on liquor license requests.

Nathan Drafall said he remembers going to the restaurant when it was known as Erik & Me when he grew up in Elgin. The restaurant also was known as Sage Bistro and was called Bistro One West when it closed in November 2012.

Top Table will offer American cuisine with a twist, including steak and seafood.

The restaurant will offer dinner only for a few weeks before it rolls out the rest of its dining options, which will include weekend brunch.

Drafall said he looks forward to giving downtown St. Charles more breakfast options.

“We’re looking to really embrace the city,” Drafall said after the City Council meeting.

The man behind Top Table’s food already is a familiar face in St. Charles.

Executive chef Josef Yurisich previously worked at Pheasant Run Resort for 22 years, running four kitchens.

The restaurant also will have full bar and wine service, and the menu will reflect the season at the time, according to a news release.

“Our menu will always feature the freshest ingredients available to us,” Yurisich wrote in the news release. “We will source our meats and produce as locally as possible.”

Batavia School District 101 unveils recognition program

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Batavia Public School District 101 and the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence on Tuesday announced a new BPS Hall of Honor recognition program.

The program is designed to honor accomplishments made

by Batavia High School alumni, Batavia Public School District 101 staff members, and community members who have demonstrated excellence in their field and/or commitment to Batavia School District 101.

“I don’t think we will have any problems getting nominations,” said retired Bata-

via teacher Nan Phillips, vice chair of the Batavia Foundation who is chairing the Hall of Honor program.

The Foundation helped create this new recognition program and has formed a BPS Hall of Honor Committee to oversee its implementation and growth.

Phillips noted other high schools in the area also have established recognition programs.

“We just felt this was something that was past its time,” Phillips said.

Batavia School Superintendent Lisa Hichens voiced support for the program.

“It is a celebration of the district,” she said.

Honorees will be inducted into the inaugural BPS Hall of Honor in the fall of 2015. A permanent display of inductees will be showcased at Batavia High School.

Up to 10 alumni and four staff/community members will be selected the first year.

Nominations can be submitted by any member of the community, alumni or staff member.

Completed applications are due by Feb. 1 and may be submitted online at http:// bps101.net/hallofhonor.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members continue to hash out what specific projects would be funded if voters in November approve the district’s plan to issue up to $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund capital improvements throughout the district.

The Batavia School Board recently voted to place the question on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. Voting “no” were board members Jon Gaspar and Jason Stoops.

If approved, the district would issue up to $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund the projects.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn has said the proposal would not result in a tax increase because the district would pledge existing revenues against the bonds.

A list of proposed projects is being refined. High priority projects include an estimated $1.2 million in

upgraded lighting systems at Rotolo Middle School, $550,000 in updated lighting systems at Batavia High School and $250,000 in masonry tuck pointing at H.C. Storm Elementary School.

Those projects with a “medium” priority include locker renovations at Rotolo Middle School and making window repairs at J.B. Nelson Elementary School.

District staff also had suggested a portion of the bonds could be used for improvements to the athletic facilities at Batavia High School, including $4.5 million for the football stadium, $408,000 for tennis court lighting, $616,000 for the junior varsity baseball field, $535,000 for the varsity baseball field and $590,000 for the varsity softball field.

Board member Tina Bleakley said she wants to hear from the community on whether these improvements should move forward.

“It was only our choice to put it on the ballot,” she said. “Now, it is the community’s choice.”

TRUE ‘BLUE’ New charity focuses on law enforcement families

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Megan Bennett saw a need in the law-enforcement community for times when a sworn officer’s family is going through a catastrophic illness, serious injury or death.

The daughter of a retired police officer herself, the St. Charles Township resident started Blue For Life Inc. in 2011 and serves as its executive director. The charity makes financial donations to any sworn Illinois police officer’s family in crisis.

“There are no charities that will step in and help if someone else in the family is going through an illness,” said Bennett, 39. “If they are taking care of a sick child or spouse, they are not always getting paid.”

A stay-at-home single mom with four children – 13-yearold twin boy and girl, an 8-yearold girl and 4-year-old boy – Bennett said she works on the charity from home while her children are in school.

The first family to receive a Blue For Life donation was the family of Bloomington police officer Jeremy Cunningham, a few days after his daughter, Alexa, then 15 months old, was diagnosed with brain cancer.

“We took my daughter to the hospital in Peoria for an MRI,” his wife, Sara Cunningham, said. “We expected to go home the same day, but as soon as [we] left the parking garage, the doctor called and said, ‘You need to come back and admit your daughter.’ ” Cunningham said she spent the next 10 days in the hospital with Alexa, while her husband used up his sick days and drove back and forth. Though their medical expenses were covered, all the other incidental costs were not.

But within a few days of Alexa’s diagnosis, financial support came from Blue For Life – and it just blew them away.

“It definitely helped,” Cunningham said. “I had not heard of Blue For Life. Then all of a sudden, I saw they made a donation to us. We don’t know these people. They don’t know

Alexa, now 2, has no evidence of a tumor at this time, Cunningham said.

Cunningham and Bennett met for the first time at a recent fundraiser for the charity. She said Bennett stayed in touch about Alexa’s condition.

“Megan is so passionate about this charity, and she wants to help so many people,” Cunningham said. “She calls Alexa their ‘Blue For Life Baby.’ That was really special to me, as well. ... They are like our family now.”

Bennett said she would not say the amount given to specific families, but $1,000 is the most that is donated.

Others that have received donations include a police officer’s family whose 12-yearold daughter died of heart problems, a DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputy’s wife with brain cancer and the family of a Wauconda police officer who was in hospice and died a couple of days later, Bennett said.

Bennett has some first-hand experience with a sickness in the family when her uncle, a Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy, died of cancer in 2006. Bennett said he worked through che-

motherapy and then was given a desk job until he went into hospice care in his home.

“As I was growing up, I was cognizant that if something happened to my dad – I do not know what my mother would have done, financially,” Bennett said.

“Police work is such a hard

job. It’s so stressful that financial concerns over health of a loved one can be too much,” Bennett said. “No amount of money can make anybody feel better after losing a child, but if we can help alleviate a financial burden, they can focus more on being a family.”

Bennett said the organization’s bylaws state 80 percent of all donations go to law-enforcement families, and 20 percent cover their expenses.

Eleven lodges of Fraternal Orders of Police and patrol officers’ associations are Blue for Life’s founding sponsors, according to its website, www. blueforlife.org. Bennett said the lodges put up the money for the charity application and start-up fees while she learned how to start and run a nonprofit organization.

“We are getting name recognition, slowly but surely,” Bennett said. “My goal is to be national. We’re doing baby steps make to sure we’re doing everything correctly. We want to become a known charity in Illinois first.”

Schuler said he would not comment on one board member or one situation. But he said he accepted criticism as part of the job, “if issues are genuinely brought up for the right reason and the right concern. … There’s nothing wrong with that, whatsoever.”

He said there can be issues “if certain issues are brought up for political gain.” He said the school board “should always do what’s right and not allow politics to become a driving force.”

At the meeting, Schuler said he wanted to “thank ev-

erybody for allowing me to lead.” He said when people have told him thank you, he

thanked them back.

“I will always be grateful,” Schuler said.

Jeff Schuler popped in on a few classrooms last week at John Stewart Elementary School in Elburn, something he said is part of his early-inthe-school-year routine as the district’s superintendent.

Schuler spoke softly with teachers and children at each stop, greeting each with a smile and asking questions and listening for answers.

Only a few days remain before Schuler, 42, leaves the district to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200. On Monday, the Kaneland School District 302 Board hired Ken Sorrick as an interim superintendent, and the search will begin for the next long-term superintendent.

Schuler’s departure ends a run in the district that began with Schuler’s 2006 hiring as assistant superintendent for human resources. Schuler became superintendent in 2010.

He said his most significant challenge was working to deliver on an expectation to endure cuts and work through a difficult economy and, at the same time, improve quality and make significant progress.

“That’s a tough message to balance,” said Schuler, who noted getting better “means something different to everybody” based on where their children or grandchildren might be in the educational system.

The district last week issued a news release touting that its students reached new heights on ACT testing, with the Class of 2014 achieving a composite ACT score of 22.2, which the news release said was the highest ever compiled in the district. But Schuler said while test results can provide an indication of how a system is doing, it doesn’t tell the entire story.

“If you would ask me if the test score growth is what I’m most proud of, I’m not,” he said.

Instead, Schuler pointed to expanded offerings at the

district’s schools, regional partnerships that were made, the expansion of technology and the opportunity to grow 21st century learning opportunities. Also, he talked of a “really robust” intervention program, which he said targets both those who need help and those who need more of a challenge. There was a new schedule put into place at the high school. Also, he said the district has helped create a structure that allowed teachers to have common planning time.

Schuler, a Plainfield resident, heads to a school district in Wheaton Warrenville that has two high schools, four middle schools, and 13 elementary schools. In contrast, Kaneland has one high school, one middle school and four elementary schools.

At Monday night’s school board meeting, Cheryl Krauspe, the president of the board, invited those in attendance to share thoughts on Schuler’s time at Kaneland.

Krauspe held back tears when talking about her feelings for Schuler, and she praised him and said he was able to help the district through a time of financial constraint. Others in attendance, including Elburn Village President Dave Anderson, high school teacher Lynn McHenry and other Kaneland board members shared positive thoughts.

One board member, Tony Valente, did not speak during that portion of the meeting.

At times, Valente has been critical of the district’s administration, Schuler in particular. When it was announced Schuler was leaving the district, Valente said he had not

Roskam speaks on issues to chamber lunch crowd

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Trying to dispel the idea that nobody agrees with anybody in Washington, U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, said Tuesday Democrats and Republicans work together on some issues.

But both sides were hit hard by revelations that veterans were put on wait lists for services from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and some died without seeing a doctor, Roskam said.

“There is plenty of sincere division about the world view and the view of the economy,” Roskam said. “Both parties were really scandalized by and traumatized, in some ways, by the knowledge that veterans were being so poorly treated. And in fact, it was costing the loss of life of many, many people.”

Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller, a conservative, negotiated with U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, a socialist, to work out a bill to address those problems, showing they can work together, he said.

Roskam represents the 6th District, which includes parts of St. Charles.

“My goal out of this, frankly, is to hear from you,” Roskam said. “Because my responsibility as your member of Congress is to reflect us to Washington, not to be Washington’s ambassador to this district.”

Despite Republicans and Democrats being able to

work together on issues like veterans and trade agreements, Roskam noted “great divisions” between the sides based on different views of the economy and the world.

“The president’s view of the world is that he has a higher tolerance for borrowing than I do,” Roskam said.

“Borrowing into the future, he would say that’s a good investment, to invest in things, and out of that is going to

come prosperity.

“There’s others, like me, that said, behind that is really not satisfactory,” Roskam said. “There are things we do need to invest in, like infrastructure in particular.

But we really need to get at these larger programs, the automatic spending programs like Medicare, Medicaid, interest on the debt ... that are just happening automatically.

We’ve got to deal with them.”

Roskam said when he talks to representatives of other states, he tells them, “I come from the state of what not to do.”

“I come from the state of what avoidance behavior looks like,” Roskam said.

“And if we put problems off, there’s no problem that gets better the longer you wait.”

Regarding the tax inversion debate, Roskam defended companies that relocate to other countries so they don’t have to pay the U.S. tax rate.

“The CEOs of companies are not looking to abandon a patriotic obligation,” Roskam said.

Instead, he said if they bring money earned overseas back to the states, they face a “confiscatory tax.”

“They are not being unpatriotic. They are dealing with an economic reality. They’ve got a duty to their shareholders to maximize shareholder value. They can’t pay a confiscatory tax ... simply put, they’re not going to,” Roskam said.

“What’s the remedy? Lower the corporate rate among other rates. Broaden the base.

Go after some of the nonsense in the tax code ... that make no sense whatsoever,” Roskam said. “I’m not here suggesting that this is easy. And I’m not here suggesting that this is simple. What I am suggesting is, it is clearly needed.”

Norman “Larry” O’Dell, of St. Charles, was born June 20, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio.

In his youth, he was a boxer in South Charleston, West Virginia. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1949 to 1953, on the USS Saufley.

He met his wife, Sheila, at the Highland Cab Company of Chicago, where they were both employed. They married January 31, 1959, in a civil ceremony in Chicago. They followed up with a church ceremony at St. Mary’s Church in West Chicago.

Norman worked for Western Electric. He retired from AT&T, after 35 years of service. He was a Union Representative for CWA local 5095.

He served as Union delegate for its national caucus. He was proud of his many terms of service as a juror in Kane County.

He was a depression era child. He farmed and gardened into his final days. He could tell a good joke, and hold an audience with his many stories; most were about his naval experiences and his boxing days. He was competitive in his baseball, golf and bowling leagues. He could hunt, fish, skin, scale, and cook his catch.

He was a survivor, a fighter, a devoted husband, and an anchoring father.

He made sure his kids had what he didn’t receive as a child. He was liked by many, and loved by his family. He was passionate in his own way. In his retirement, he split his time between Illinois, and his home in Leesburg, Florida, where he was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Okahumpka, Florida.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sheila E. “McAtee” O’Dell; 4 children, son, Joe (Donna, nee Navin) O’Dell , of Glendale Heights, IL; daughter, Julianne Frerichs, of Wheaton, IL; sons, Owen O’Dell, of St. Charles, IL, Clayton O’Dell and partner, Kelly Vogel, of High Top, AL; brother, Steve O’Dell of Chicago, IL; sisters, Darlene Lerfald, of Nashville, TN, Ada Sue Hill of Streamwood, IL; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and expecting two more great-grandchildren.

TERRENCE M. SHEEHAN Born: April 27, 1946 Died: Aug. 19, 2014 Terrence Michael Sheehan, was born on April 27, 1946, in Chicago to George and Kay Sheehan.

He began a new life in the presence of his Lord on August 19, 2014. Memorial services were held on August 25, 2014, at Christ Community Church in St. Charles.

Terry grew up in Berwyn Illinois and helped to run the family grocery store there from the time he was a boy. He graduated from Morton West High School, attended the University of New Mexico, and graduated from Southern Illinois University. Terry played football in high school and college. He maintained friendships with many high school friends who meet annually for their famous Turkey Cook.

Terry was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during the Vietnam era. Terry’s longtime occupation was as regional sales manager for ASI Datamyte - a quality control software/hardware firm. Terry loved football and baseball especially, but all sports in general. More than anything, he loved his family.

He married Jan Grippe on March 9, 1974, and had two sons, Tyler and Ted. His 2nd marriage was to Annette Mallette Dippy on July 1, 2006. He and Ann lived in St. Charles Illinois. They attended Christ Community Church, where Terry was a member and usher.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, and his parents-in-law.

Terry is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Sandy Sheehan of Granville Tennessee. He is also survived by his former spouse, Jan Sheehan of St. Charles; his wife, Annette Sheehan of St. Charles; his children, Tyler and Beth Mizerk-Sheehan of Huntley; Ted and Katie Sheehan of St. Charles; Megan and Jason Paul of Sugar Grove; and April Dippy of Streamwood. He was proud to be the grandfather - affectionately called Tay - of 6 grandchildren: Lucas Paul, Wyatt Mizerk, Taylor Paul, Sam Sheehan, Keenan Paul, and Madelyn Sheehan.

GENEVA – As Kane County works to whittle down a projected budget gap for next year, its elected officials are looking toward the potential cost savings in health insurance.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen on Tuesday encouraged the Committee of the Whole to think about actions the board can take in this area, as it is one in which some progress might be made.

Initially projected at about $2 million, the gap in the proposed general fund now totals about $1.2 million, Lauzen said.

Approval of the budget is planned for November. The county is self-insured and has a third-party administrator, Blue Cross Blue Shield.

On Tuesday, Laurence Marx of Global Benefits Group – a Libertyville-based employee benefits consulting firm – outlined the projected 2015 renewal costs with Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Fixed costs total $1.16 million, he said, noting those can be negotiated.

Claim costs – which cannot be negotiated – are projected at $13.7 million, he said.

This represents an increase of about 6.74 percent, he said. The county can, however, work toward implementing cost-cutting measures, Marx said.

Strategies include encouraging mail-order for maintenance medications; establishing a working spouse provision; and, among others, using medical advocacy tools, he said.

The total potential savings tops $1.1 million, Marx said. However, he said, collective bargaining agreements would affect what changes could be made.

The most feasible options could result in more than $500,000 in savings, though savings recognizable in 2015 would be about $113,000, he said.

Board member Becky Gillam, R-West Dundee, said many of the strategies, such as the mail-order medications, are mandated in the private sector.

Because of that, she said, it’s likely that a lot of employees’ spouses and families are migrating to the county’s insurance.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Sales of traditional properties were up in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles in July, while sales of distressed properties decreased, according to the latest data released by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

There were 733 tradi tional homes sold in July in St. Charles, a 14 percent increase compared to July 2013. Geneva posted a 11.6 percent increase, and Batavia posted a 4.4 percent increase over the same period.

Geneva had the largest decline of short sales in July with 33 homes sold, down

21.4 percent from the 42 homes sold during the same month last year.

St. Charles had a 12.5 percent decrease in short sales and Batavia had a 9.1 percent decrease compared to July 2013.

Median sale prices went up in Batavia and Geneva in July compared to one year

ago.

Batavia’s median sale price went up to $268,500, a 3.5 percent increase from last year, and Geneva’s reached $318,000, a 1.1 percent increase compared to July 2013.

St. Charles posted a decline in its median sales price for traditional homes.

In July the median price was $292,691, a decrease of 3.2 percent from the same period last year.

Prices of single-family, detached homes across the Chicago suburbs increased 5.7 percent in July 2014 compared with the same period a year ago, according to the organization’s statistics.

“We get a lot of people who show up and see it,” said Pat Mundinger, who organizes the event every year for the Maple Park American Legion Post 312. “The only disappointment I have is that there are not more people participating.”

This year, two teams have signed up so far. But Mundinger said that’s typical for the race.

“I don’t know who is showing up until right before the race starts,” he said.

The Toilet Bowl Challenge will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Those who want to sign up for the race can call Mundinger at 630-774-9288.

The rules of the race are simple: teams must be comprised of three people – one person will “steer” the toilet and the other two people will push.

A new driver must be in

place at the race’s halfway mark, and no motors can be used.

The first place team will receive a $100 prize. In addition, $50 will be awarded for second place and $25 for third place.

The team chosen Best of Show will receive a $100 prize.

Over the years, Mundinger said he has seen many interesting entries in the Toilet Bowl Challenge.

The operating budget represents the college’s main costs, covering the education, operating and maintenance funds, officials said.

“As has been our history,

Waubonsee also has $15 million a capital budget, which accounts for the completion of a field house and Erickson Hall, the culmination of the college’s 2020 Master Plan.

You can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.

Batavia takes great pride in its history. Everywhere you look there are elements of the city’s past. From historical buildings and homes, to parks named for the original settlers. But to take a true trip back in time, one only needs to step through the doors of the Batavia Depot Museum in the heart of downtown Batavia.

Housed within the walls of the museum are thousands of pieces of historical information, from photos, diaries and letters, to yearbooks and articles spanning more than 100 years old. Visitors can tour the museum’s exhibits, as well as the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Caboose.

The depot dates back to the 1800s and is believed to be the oldest Burlington Depot still in existence in the United States.

This year, the depot is celebrating its 160th birthday.

It was originally located on the southeast corner of Van Buren and Webster streets and was relocated to its current location at 155 Houston Street in October 1973. It was truly a community affair, and many locals still remember the big move.

“The building was put

on wheels and rolled down Prairie Street to Wilson then to Water Street and onto its current site,” said Carla Hill, director of the museum. “It was a beautiful sunny day in October, and the entire community came out to line the streets and watch.”

In 1975, the depot opened as a museum, and it has seen many great improvements and additions in the past 37 years under the direction of Hill.

One of the first things she did as Depot Museum director was to have the building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Even though the depot was moved from its original site, we still believed that it belonged on the National Register because of its historical significance,” Hill said. “We were able to get the committee to come out to look at the architecture and the style of the depot.”

When the Depot Museum opened its doors, it had one floor of displays.

Over the next several decades, the building was renovated to make room for additional exhibits.

Visitors can now browse an early history of the town to learn about the “Little Town in a Big Woods,” the industry and the original settlers to Batavia.

“The exhibits tell an important story of how our town actually became what it is today,” Hill said.

The depot opened as a museum in 1975. current site, the museum campus has continued to grow. Batavia’s first bank, the “Coffin Bank,” was added to the site around 1990, the same time as the Guzenhauser/Smith gazebo. A water tower made by the U.S. Wind Engine and Pump Company, one of Batavia’s former windmill manufacturers, also was relocated to the site along with the caboose, which was built at the Burlington Roundhouse in Aurora more than 100 years ago and moved to the site in 1974. The caboose opened for

viewing in 1994.

In 2000, the Gustafson Research Center was developed and dedicated. The research center houses the museum’s archives, including photos, articles and records.

“We never really had an accessible place for all of the items,” Hill said. “When we developed the research center, it gave us the opportunity to give the public access to them.”

The Depot Museum is a tremendous educational resource for the community. Last year, staff took

the learning outdoors in an effort to provide a unique opportunity for kids and adults.

The Depot Museum hosted a Civil War Encampment in September that allowed visitors to see what it was like for soldiers fighting in the war.

Because of its success last year and because of the 160th birthday celebration, staff decided to host the encampment again.

This year, the Depot Museum will feature exhibits that portray the important role the railroads have played, not only to the development of the community, but to war efforts. Railroads were instrumental in moving soldiers, food and medical equipment.

The Birthday Celebration and Civil War Encampment will kickoff at 7 p.m. Sept.

10 with a program entitled “Railroads & the Civil War” at the Batavia Public Library.

An opening ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 12, at the Civil War monument at the West Side Cemetery.

A hospital room with a view is beneficial

By VIRGINIA POSTREL Bloomberg News Hospitals are, by their nature, scary and depressing places. But they don’t have to be ugly as well – and there’s ample evidence that aesthetics matter to patient health.

When the University Medical Center of Princeton tested a mock-up room with nice views, a sofa for guests and no roommates, it found that patients asked for 30 percent less pain medication, reports the New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman. This result shouldn’t be surprising.

The seminal study on the subject was published in 1984 – that’s right, 30 years ago – in Science. Roger S. Ulrich, now an architecture professor at the Center for Healthcare Building Research at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden after many years at Texas A&M University, compared two groups of patients recovering from gallbladder surgery in the same hospital, matching patients for characteristics such as age and obesity that might affect their recovery.

One group looked out on some trees while the other faced a brick wall; their rooms were otherwise almost the same. Patients with a view of the trees required significantly less high-powered pain medication and left the hospital earlier, after 7.96 days versus 8.70.

Thirty years of follow-up research later, and it’s still news when someone designs a hospital room with a view.

The problem is not a lack of knowledge or, as Kimmelman suggests, neglect by “front-rank architects.” The real problem is a lack of incentives and feedback. New hospitals that hire fancy architects tend to lavish money on public areas – the places donors see – and treat hidden departments, such as the imaging suites, as purely functional.

Even when money isn’t an issue, they make choices that please administrators but ignore research. The old-fashioned insistence on highly polished floors, a hazard to older patients with fading eyesight, is a pet peeve of health care design experts.

Last year, JAMA published an opinion column by a University of Pennsylvania medical student who had been struck by the contrast when he moved from adult departments to a pediatric rotation. Suddenly, the environment was cheerful, “almost celestial,” wrote Mark A. Attiah.

“Hospitals are scary places – kids, you want to reduce their anxiety and stress as much as you possibly can,” a hospital executive told Attiah. “You want it to be bright and cheerful, not drab, dreary and dark.”

Adults deserve the same consideration, if not the exact same design choices.

Ideally, the aesthetics of hospital rooms would trade off costs and benefits in ways that reflect patient preferences and scientific evidence. Those factors do play a role. But, like the rest of medicine, health care design also is determined by habit, prejudice, covert rationing, prestige and public pressure. So a notice on the front page of the New York Times is a small example of progress.

of Secrecy” because most of the documents involved in the negotiation and design of the coal-fired plant that supplies our electrical power are hidden from public view. It will take an investigation by the state attorney general to bring this information to light.

Selling, buying, and moving is an expensive and arduous process.

We were hoping our next move would not occur for decades. Our family was drawn to Batavia because of the school system’s fine reputation and the city’s natural

amenities. But if businesses and residents begin to flee Batavia in search of lower electric rates, our school system (and our children) surely will pay the price. The thought of having to move again because of a deal signed back in 2007 is disturbing beyond belief.

I urge the Batavia City Council to request an attorney general investigation into the Peabody Energy contract.

Promising debut Geneva girls volleyball turns back Rosary in opener

Don’t let the song’s title or retrospective lyrics fool you.

The visiting Royals hardly are disbanding after absorbing a 25-18, 25-21 sweep, nor are the Vikings regarding the result as anything but a strong start.

But don’t let the DJ stray too far, either. “Good Riddance” would make ideal highlight video accompaniment if the Vikings were to deliver on the promise swirling around them. The core of last season’s Class 4A supersectional qualifier returns,

“... We want to do just as well or, hopefully, better than we did last year. But we know it’s going to be really hard. It’s not going to be easy to get back to where we were last year.”

Just the same, there’s no doubt the new QBs will have to develop quickly for those teams to become as productive offensively as they’d like.

• For those searching for some pomp and circumstance, Friday’s home game against Walther Christian will mark Wheaton Academy’s first home game on campus since the program was discontinued in 1989. The Warriors have played home games off campus since the program was reinstated in 2007 but are prepared to break in new Performance Trust Field, the latest area school to roll out a turf field.

Friday also will mark the head coaching debuts for St. Charles East’s Bryce Farquhar, Aurora Christian’s Dave Beebe and St. Francis’ Mike Fitzgerald.

• Regardless of which team you support, we all can pull for a more enjoyable opening night than what we saw in 2013, when lightning postponed games throughout the area until the following day (and, in St. Francis’ case, until Sunday).

Ominously enough, we’ve seen plenty of stormy, rumbling skies this week. Maybe Mother Nature will get that out of her system before Friday.

Even if the lightning steers clear, conditioning – always crucial early in the season – looms even larger than usual, with temperatures likely to be in the 80s Friday.

Keep those water bottles handy, and beware the dreaded opening night cramps. Hopefully the athletic trainers are in midseason form.

Sophomores Erin Burke and Molly Curley started at outside Tuesday, and have meshed well on a team with just four seniors.

“It was good,” said Hart, a sophomore and St. Charles resident who plays club ball on Batavia-based Fusion South with several Vikings.

“At times, we were a little nervous, but I think for the first game, it was pretty good.”

In 2013, Geneva excelled with a similarly thin senior class. Another sophomore staple for Rosary, libero Martha Konovodoff (three digs) brings the lineup further consistency.

Both sides dealt with communication breakdowns, but later acknowledged that’s to be expected in August. Ideally, it’s a non-issue within a few weeks.

“I think they’re comfortable with each other, they’re just not comfortable on the court right now,” Royals coach Rachel Hartmann said.

“But they’re going to be good, you know. I don’t know how good, but this is at least a helping point for us, the coaching staff, to say, ‘OK, we’ve just

Loberg (10 digs) and Kelsey Wicinski (six) provided support as Rosary’s attack got better acclimated.

The theme song of the night’s second timeout, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” matched the growing urgency, as the Vikings can attest.

With Seitelman admittedly striving to bring more energy than her traditionally even-keeled predecessor, K.C. Johnsen, Geneva players quickly have taken notice.

“It’s a lot different than last year. It’s a lot more intense,” Barrett said. “But we are definitely learning a lot and she’s going to help us reach where we need to go, and she’s going to help us get there.”

Here are a few football thoughts to tide you over until Friday: • If you’re just a high school football fan not emotionally invested in a certain team, you have plenty to choose from in the Tri-Cities area for attending a Week 1 game.

Batavia, St. Charles East, St. Charles North and Kaneland open up with home games, while Geneva has a modest trek down Randall Road to West Aurora.

Batavia-Oswego probably is the marquee local opener.

Not only is it the first time the Bulldogs will suit up since winning the 6A state championship, but Oswego is a perennial playoff team with a Division-I prospect quarterback in junior Steven Frank. Whether Batavia goes with Evan Acosta or Kyle Niemiec, the Bulldogs will send a newcomer under center, so the advantage at that crucial spot seemingly swings in the Panthers’ favor.

It’ll be up to Batavia’s vaunted pass rush – highlighted by beastly seniors Noah Frazier and Josh Leonhard – to help nullify that edge in front of what surely will be an electric opening night crowd at Bulldog Stadium.

• Speaking of the quarterback spot, this is one of those seasons in which proven commodities are few and far between for area programs.

Geneva’s Daniel Santacaterina and Aurora Christian’s Austin Bray are decorated returnees, but otherwise, it’s mostly going to be new faces around the area, and some coaches have been hesitant to name their starter before the season begins.

The best way to ease in new quarterbacks is a reliable running game, and the good news for teams such as Batavia, Kaneland, Marmion, St. Charles East

Griggs, McWeeney help elevate Saints past Batavia, STC North and Waubonsie

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys golf squad displayed its depth in winning its own quadrangular Tuesday at the Royal Fox Country Club.

Led by the Saints’ sixth and eight golfers, Ronnie Griggs and Kyle McWeeney, who both shot rounds of 39 on the par-35, nine-hole course, East won the match with a score of 159. Seven of the eight Saints golfers shot 42 or less.

Batavia came in second with a score of 169 followed by Waubonsie Valley (172) and St. Charles North (175).

Griggs and McWeeney also tied for lowest score on the day.

“East showed their depth.

Stock also attributed his team’s effort to demonstrate improvement in recent days as a factor in East’s triumph.

“We played at Coyote Creek Saturday and we had too many double [bogeys],” Stock said.

“Today we were focusing on no doubles and both Ronnie and Kyle had no double bogeys. That’s the key – eliminate the big numbers.”

Despite McWeeney’s solid showing, he still sensed room

for progress.

“I left a lot of putts out there that probably could of being made and a lot greens I should have hit, but overall I was pretty happy with the round,” McWeeney said.

Griggs was glad to see the Saints show well against Tri-Cities rivals North and Batavia.

“It was nice to put a solid round together. It’s great to start off the year with a win and a quad match,” Griggs said. “I hope we can continue this play.”

Batavia and North also demonstrated balanced lineups.

Nick LaRocco led the Bulldogs with a 40, followed

by Andrew Nelson (41), Matt Patton (44), Mike Morrison (44) and Rocco Carbonara (44).

The top golfer for North was Jake Muehlschlegel, who shot a 42. The North Stars’

Hank Zimmer was second with a 43.

Four North players completed the course with a 45: Trevor Kurtzhals, Tharyn Duncan, Jarron Gandy and Mike Staszcuk.

North Stars coach Rob Prentiss said entering the season a North team with little proven experience might need a little longer to successfully acclimate to varsity competition.

“I’m trying to get them to reach their potential as golfers,” Prentiss said about his young team. “We’ve got talent and we are working hard but we need to have some growth to take place in order to be a factor in the conference.”

St. Charles East and St. Charles North teamed together in the opening week of the season to defeat Batavia and Geneva in the annual McChesney Cup.

The Saints won’t get ahead of themselves, but they certainly looked like a team that could make another lengthy postseason run this fall, cruising past Neuqua Valley, 5-1, in Tuesday’s season opener.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Kane County Cougars matched a franchise record by picking up their 88th victory Tuesday against the Burlington Bees.

The Cougars (43-21 second half, 88-46 overall) used four unanswered runs to grab a 6-1 win over the Bees (27-37, 6568). Six games remain on the Cougars’ schedule for a chance to set a new high for wins in a single season.

Trey Martin led off the third inning with a double and put the Cougars on top when he scored on Chesny Young’s sacrifice fly. Jeimer Candelario doubled to continue the inning and came home to score on Cael Brockmeyer’s single for a 2-0 Coguars’ lead.

The Cougars’ most productive inning came in the sixth as they piled on four unearned runs. With the bases loaded, Cambris Moye couldn’t han-

dle a shoveling toss from reliever Brian Lonconsole on Carlos Penalver’s swinging bunt. Moye’s error allowed Rogers to score for a 3-1 lead.

The Cougars continued with an RBI groundout from Trey Martin and Shawon Dunston Jr.’s two-run double.

Michael Heesch took over for Duane Underwood in the sixth inning a runner on. The left-handed reliever tossed 2⅔ scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Underwood (6-4) picked up the win only giving up one run, including a stretch of retiring 12 straight batters. Alex Blackford (1-4) suffered the loss.

The Cougars now head to Cedar Rapids to finish off the regular season road schedule.

Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.45 ERA) will begin the three-game set against the Kernels’ Ryan Eads (5-11). First pitch from Perfect Game Field is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. today.

One year a team will have a boatload of experience; the next season, it’s relying on underclassmen.

For the Northern Illinois University volleyball team in 2014, it’s going to need some contributions from younger players. The Huskies’ roster features five freshmen and seven sophomores with only three upperclassmen.

“We had this type of heavy youth movement probably four, five years ago, Sarah Angelos and that [group], and it ended up being a group that won over 90 matches,” NIU coach Ray Gooden said. “You kind of deal with the hand that you’re dealt with. The kids that we got in, we’re pretty excited

about.”

One freshman who could make an impact this season is outside hitter Taylor Krage out of St. Charles North. She said that every practice, the younger members of the team find more and more consistency.

“It’s not like we’re the only ones, there’s five of us,” she said. “We’re working our way in there.”

Senior outside hitter McKenzie Roddy, a 2013 All-Mid-American Conference selection, is one of two seniors on the Huskies, along with middle blocker Emily Paschke.

“There’s definitely more leadership (involved) because I have been around for a while,” Roddy said. “I’m used to how we do things here. Helping lead on the court and off the court is a big transition for me being a senior, and then helping those younger girls find their roles and contribute to the team.”

Brad Paisley’s country expands borders as good as it gets.”

He’s the closest country music has come to Norman Rockwell.

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post Country music is supposed to be about real life, and in real life, Brad Paisley is sipping Perrier.

Will we ever get to hear a Paisley lyric about French bubbles in little green bottles? This is a man who hung his star over Nashville singing about the perils of ticks, tanning beds and online dating.

So, yeah, maybe we will.

Nashville loves to agonize over what country music should and shouldn’t be, and that’s the tangled yarn ball Paisley’s been spinning on his finger for more than a decade. Of any country superstar working today, he’s the guy with the songs most intimately connected to the contemporary American experience – the blood, the sweat, the tears, the beers and everything else in the grocery bag.

He populates his lyric sheet with people who don’t normally appear in country songs, gilding their unfamiliar dramas in deeply familiar melodies.

Sometimes, there’s a political message.

More often, there’s a punch line.

“I defuse everything I can with it,” Paisley says. “Humor is such a great shield. You’re going to get flak if you tell the wrong joke, but it’s still the wrong joke. Give the wrong speech, you take it on the chin.”

That’s exactly where Paisley took it in April of last year when critics locked their ears on “Accidental Racist,” an earnest duet with rapper LL Cool J about racial healing that went wrong, then went viral. “I’m just a white man coming to you from the southland,” Paisley sings on the refrain, “trying to understand what it’s like not to be.”

The song was ridiculed by bloggers, blasted by critics, eviscerated by Stephen Colbert and parodied on “Saturday Night Live.” Then the great digital outrage machine did what it always does. It moved on to something else.

Paisley didn’t. “I’m still on a journey to learn this stuff,” the 41-year-old says, relaxing on his tour bus before a recent concert in Atlanta. “I want to hear what the professors and the pundits have to say. I had great conversations with a couple of people who were vocally upset, and I’m trying to learn what I can do better.”

As a songwriter, one of Paisley’s central themes has always been “taking pride in progress” – in America’s and, perhaps subconsciously, his own.

Accordingly, his 11th album, “Moonshine in the Trunk,” out this week, finds him bouncing back from contro-

He’s been on tour, giving the late country legend Roger Miller a run for his money as a guitarist and a cutup.

He’s been on television, serving as a judge on ABC’s latest singing game show, “Rising Star.” He’s been at home on his farm outside Nashville, soaking up time with his young sons, Huck and Jasper, and his wife, actress Kimberly Williams. And he’s been online, executing his own rogue publicity campaign, leaking songs from “Moonshine in the Trunk” on Twitter, one by one.

He calls the album “a Mason jar half-full” – which means lots of drinking songs and lots of optimism.

And while the album’s excessive sunshine might seem a little tone-deaf to anyone who’s been following the news this summer, Paisley is far from oblivious.

His music doesn’t just chronicle the America we live in. It envisions the America he wants to live in.

“Thinking, ‘Boy, are we blowing it, now’ – I don’t want to do that,” Paisley says. “I have two little boys. I want to say, ‘Here are the possibilities.’ This is the best time to be alive in the history of our country. And hopefully, this isn’t

The great art critic – and Music Row songwriting veteran – Dave Hickey had a terrific understanding of what Rockwell was really about.

“This is what [Rockwell] celebrates and insists upon: that ‘normal’ life, in this country, is not normal at all,” Hickey wrote in 1995, “that we all exist in a general state of social and physical equanimity that is unparalleled in the history of humans.” On Rockwell’s fundamental message, Hickey spelled it out: “Hey! People are different. Get used to it.”

Paisley, who embarked on his songwriting career immediately after graduating from Belmont University in Nashville in 1995, loves Rockwell, too – and he’s quick to volunteer a favorite image. He saw it hanging at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch: two janitors taking a break from mopping a theater to leaf through the playbill. “Love that one,” he says, blinking hard so he can see it on his eyelids.

It’s easy to imagine Paisley in a songwriting session, conjuring similar characters with his eyes clamped. He has a knack for singing from other perspectives, sometimes playing an opinionated narrator on the brink of a big realization.

On the new album, there’s “Gone Green” – a song penned by Paisley’s bassist, Kenny Lewis – in which a “redneck” reluctantly embraces environmentalism in a world that’s “done gone green.” On 2013’s “Those Crazy Christians,” Paisley sings from the position of a grouchy atheist willing to admit that, “If I ever really needed help, well, you know who I’d call is those crazy Christians.”

And all those ditties about the ups and downs and upside-downs of alcohol? They’re inspired by the sloshiness Paisley sees at his concerts. He doesn’t really drink.

And while the controversy over “Accidental Racist” raged almost completely outside of the country music world, it’s worth remembering that Paisley was sending that message to country fans, a bloc that’s overwhelmingly white and completely unaccustomed to being confronted with songs about race.

“I found incredible consolation in their reaction,” Paisley says, “which was, ‘Huh, I never thought about that.’”

Studies suggest link between obesity and lack of sleep Dear Doctor K: I recently saw a headline that said children who sleep less weigh more. Is that true?

Dear Reader: I believe you’re referring to a study recently published in the medical journal Pediatrics. Researchers from Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital for Children kept track of more than 1,000 children from the ages of 6 months to 7 years.

They asked mothers how much sleep their children got at the age of 6 months, 1 year, and then every year until the end of the study.

Between ages 7 and 8, researchers measured the children’s body fat and body mass index (BMI). They found that kids who were the most sleep-deprived were about twoand-a-half times as likely to be obese as those who consistently got enough sleep. They also scored higher on other measurements of body fat.

This study further confirms a link between sleep and weight.

Many previous studies have also shown that when children and adults don’t get enough sleep, it increases their risk of being overweight and having heart disease.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff These are the recommended daily amounts of sleep for young kids: 6 months to 2 years – 12 hours; 3 to 4 years – 10 hours; and 5 to 7 years – 9 hours.

Here are some ideas for improving the amount and quality of your child’s sleep: • Set and enforce a regular bedtime.

• Limit TV, especially before bedtime. The kind of light emitted by a TV can make it harder to fall asleep.

• Have soothing bedtime routines, such as bathing, quiet time and reading stories.

• Consider room-darkening curtains or a white-noise machine.

Why would sleeping less increase a child’s (or an adult’s) weight? We don’t know for sure that it does. But in recent years we’ve discovered some ways that it could. Most of the studies have been done with adults, not kids. In adults, experiments that restrict sleep to four to five hours each night lead to a fall in blood levels of the hormone

leptin.

Leptin travels in the blood, reaches the brain and has two effects. First, it decreases appetite. Second, it speeds up metabolism, which leads the body to burn more calories.

So lower-than-normal levels of leptin would increase appetite and cause the body to burn fewer calories.

Restricting sleep increases blood levels of another hormone, ghrelin. When it reaches the brain, it increases appetite – particularly an appetite for high-calorie foods.

Low blood levels of leptin and high blood levels of ghrelin are a kind of double whammy: They cause a person to consume more calories, and burn those calories less efficiently.

Sleep isn’t the only factor when it comes to childhood obesity. Along with making sure your children get enough sleep, make sure they are active for at least an hour a day. Limit sweetened drinks, and feed them a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

There are two major inhalants used by unwise humans. They are solvents, including the fumes of certain liquids including paint thinners, gasoline and nail polish remover, and aerosols, which include anything that is sprayed and comes in aerosol cans.

When a person is high on an inhalant, the behavior is almost the same as when a person is intoxicated. However inhalant use can cause serious health complications, even death. Sometimes, to get a greater amount of inhalant more quickly into their systems, users place a plastic bag over their heads. This is successful but, unfortunately, the person loses consciousness and dies from a lack of oxygen.

Others die when their lungs are coated with inhalant and oxygen cannot penetrate the gooey film, causing death.

The safest way to get high is to enjoy nature, love your family and spend time with your friends who inspire you to reach your goals.

Any substance that causes a person to alter a normal behavior should be avoided.

It’s hard enough getting through this life when our brains are functioning properly. We don’t need to have our brains “shutting down” for any reason!

KYSO, marching band displaced by pipeline project TransCanada to begin work in September at Kaneland High School KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – At least two organizations will be affected starting next month in the Kaneland High School area, as a TransCanada natural gas pipeline upgrade project will get underway.

Julie-Ann Fuchs, the assistant superintendent for business for Kaneland School District 302, said the project will take place on the east side of campus and run north and south.

During the period of construction, the area being worked on will be fenced off, with fencing extended 75 feet to the east and 75 feet to the west of where the work is taking place.

Fuchs said that will affect the Kaneland High School band, which uses part of that area for practice.

It also will affect the Kaneland Youth Soccer Organization, which uses the nearby fields for practice and its weekly games.

Kaneland High School is at 47W326 Keslinger Road in Maple Park.

Fuchs said she is not sure whether it will affect the Kaneland Future Farmers of America group.

She said the district was notified of the project on Aug. 18.

There are three underground natural gas pipelines that will be part of the project, according to information sent by TransCanada. Fuchs said the work is set to begin Sept. 15.

The KYSO sent information to parents indicating that the construction work would “affect our soccer season,” meaning both the KYSO and its Kaneland United Soccer Club.

“The impact is the current soccer fields will be closed by mid-September through early November and will require changes to the KYSO and KUSC seasons,” the KYSO’s notice stated. The notice said that the KYSO and the school district would be considering options “that will allow for a great soccer season.”

Field locations, season length and game times might be affected, but it promised “there will be a season.”

Fuchs said the marching band will be working with the high school administra-

tion to make arrangements.

According to information sent by TransCanada, the project is expected to run through early November. From November until spring 2015, the company’s information indicates it will complete additional restoration of property and recreational fields.

According to the information, TransCanada stated it would replace sections of the pipelines with a thicker wall and higher strength pipe, which “will add an extra measure of safety and security to our already safe and reliable system.”

The information from TransCanada indicated that “24-hour security personnel will add an extra measure of safety for everyone who visits the campus.”

Fuchs brought up the subject at Monday’s Kaneland School District 302 Board meeting, and parents and board members indicated there was some concern about the project. A parent, Montgomery resident Melissa Anderson, asked when parents would be alerted to the situation. Fuchs said the district was working on sending out information.

project could be stopped and perhaps done in the summer, when the impact could be lessened.

“I’ll be worried about that every single day as a parent,” Valente said.

Fuchs said later that administrators didn’t have input on the timing of the project.

Jenna Palfrey, a company representative, said the company became aware of the increased use in the area during the summer.

At that point, she said, the company was required to make upgrades before winter.

Fuchs said she would invite representatives from TransCanada to a board meeting on Sept. 8. Palfrey said at least one company representative would attend.

“Any time anyone in a community where we have a presence invites us to a public forum, we want to be there,” Palfrey said.
