Elburn’s Potvin earns Silver Beaver honor More inside

Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Linda Potvin said she was surprised when she learned she was to receive the highest council-level honor that can be presented to a Scouting volunteer.

Potvin, an Elburn resident, was among the Three Fires Council’s recipients of the Silver Beaver Award earlier this summer.

Potvin works with Elburn Scout Troop 7. She said she has worked with many Scouts for more than 20 years, helping them achieve such accomplishments as their Eagle Scout status. You can read more about those efforts on page 6 of today’s Kane County Chronicle.

But Potvin said she doesn’t work with Scouts to be recognized with honors, and she said she didn’t really think of herself as a potential recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.

“I always thought it was a whole separate class of people,” Potvin said. “I always looked up to them.”

She had been nominated

by Bruce Alderman. In an email, Alderman wrote “as Troop 7 committee chair, whenever I asked her for help, she was there for us and the boys and was ‘all in.’ I can’t

think of a better person to receive this award than Linda.”

In his nomination, Alderman provided lists of Potvin’s volunteering endeavors – in the Scouting world and in other areas, as well. He pointed out she worked with the Elburn Food Pantry, was a Girl Scout troop leader, worked with PTOs at

Kaneland School District 302 and served on the Kaneland Foundation Board. He also noted she was the mother of two Eagle Scouts.

“Linda has been instrumental in creating programs that have been long-lasting and assets to the community in most, if not all, of the organizations she has been involved in,” Alderman wrote in the nominating form.

Potvin said the honor “does mean a lot to me.”

“As a volunteer, it is the highest honor one can receive,” she said, calling it “an honor to receive.”

Waubonsee Community College Board OKs $94 million budget

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Waubonsee Community College Board approved a $94 million budget for fiscal 2016, about $2 million less than fiscal 2015, officials said.

The budget was adopted at its Aug. 19 meeting, college spokeswoman Stephanie Wennmacher wrote in an email. With the completion of the 2020 College Master Plan

this past March, officials are allocating less money to campus construction projects this upcoming year, she wrote.

Campus construction and renovation funds are accumulated in operations and maintenance, a restricted fund, she wrote. About $5 million is being budgeted for renovation of the college’s Copley Campus, which is scheduled to begin in late December.

Property taxes provide

more than half of the college’s operating revenue. Tuition and fees provide about a third of the college’s operat-

ing revenue, with state funds providing less than 10 percent, according to Wennmacher’s email.

Artist George Blaha headed to Waubonsee

BATAVIA – Batavia police continue to search for two male suspects after an armed robbery Monday night of the AT&T store on the city’s west side.

“We have very strong leads that we are working on now,” Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said Tuesday.

Batavia police about 7 p.m.

Monday were dispatched to the store at 201 N. Randall Road, Batavia, for the robbery. Witnesses told police two men entered the store, displayed a handgun and took money, cellphones and other electronic devices.

Three employees and two customers were in the store at the time of the robbery, Bretz said.

“Everyone was escorted to a back storage room, where they

were tied up,” Bretz said.

After the robbery, the suspects left through the store’s back door to a car driven by an unknown third subject, Bretz said. The car left in an unknown direction, he said.

He said the department is examining video taken at the time of the armed robbery from security cameras in the AT&T store in Batavia and from other stores near the location. Witnesses have described the suspects as two black men about 20 to 30 years old, each about 6 feet tall and with thin builds.

The department also is looking at similarities between the robbery and the Aug. 14 armed robbery of an AT&T store in the 2300 block of North Farnsworth Avenue in Aurora, Bretz said.

Anyone with information about the Batavia robbery is asked to contact the Batavia Police Department Investigations Unit at 630-454-2500.

KANEVILLE – There will be food, cars, fireworks and more at the 2015 Kaneville Fest this weekend.

“It’s going to be a great [event] this year,” Kaneville Village President Pat Hill said. “We’re hoping for good weather.”

The fest starts off with community garage sales from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There are several attractions set for Saturday, including a 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. car show across the street from the store with a DJ and the 1950s- and 1960s-themed band the MacCartTyns performing live, Hill said.

SCOUT’S HONOR

alagattolla@shawmedia.com In his quest to earn the status of Eagle Scout, Elburn resident Andrew Burroughs said he wanted to select a service project he would be able to view years from now, something that had meaning to those close to him.

As a parishioner at St. Gall Catholic Church in Elburn, Burroughs decided to have his group perform improvements at the church’s cemetery – replacing a sign, adding landscaping and more.

“I wanted to do a project I knew was going to make a huge difference,” Burroughs said. “I wanted to do a project where I can come back into Elburn 10 or 15 years from now and say, ‘Hey, that was my project, and I’m glad it’s still there.’ ” The Eagle Scout rank is the highest that can be achieved in Boy Scouts. According to www.scouting.org, those who aspire to become Eagle Scouts first must progress through the ranks in order and then also earn 21 merit badges.

They must serve six months in a troop leadership position and then provide leadership for a service project. After that, they must go through a board of review. According to

Burroughs, 17, is with Elburn Boy Scout Troop 7, and there are Scouts from troops throughout the area that have reached the Eagle Scout rank.

In Elburn, many, including Burroughs, have worked with Linda Potvin – a recent Silver Beaver Award winner who said she has 10 mentor pins, which Eagle Scouts present to the person who served as their mentor during the process.

“Every project is differ-

ent,” Potvin said. “Every boy starts an Eagle project as a boy. A lot of them end it as a man.”

Potvin said for many, achieving the Eagle Scout rank can be a life-changing experience. She said it can help when pursuing scholarships and can be a valuable addition to a résumé. But simply performing a project isn’t enough. Scouts then must face a board of review, and Potvin said she has been part of many such boards.

She said it’s possible a project could be rejected, but it’s rare because a candidate is unlikely to go through so

much work and not finish the job.

Burroughs is among those who finished a project and now must wait for the review process. Another such Scout is Stephen Richmond of St. Charles Troop 13, who recently supervised the installation of a rain garden at Anderson Park in Campton Hills. Richmond said it was difficult to settle on the project’s mission, and many he came up with at first “proved to be fairly impractical.”

Richmond said he has wanted to be an Eagle Scout since he joined Scouting at age 11. He is now 17.

“It’s been a rewarding journey, if you are willing to undertake it,” Richmond said.

Kelby Randall, a Scout from St. Charles Troop 60, is overseeing the building of a gazebo for a rehabilitation center in Geneva. Randall had to raise $3,800 as part of the project, which includes concrete for a foundation, roofing and possibly landscaping. He had to request building permits.

Randall stands out among Eagle Scout candidates, as he is only 14 years old. He said becoming an Eagle Scout is about more than achieving a rank. He said those who finish must learn to be leaders and

have a vision in life.

Randall said he would recommend the Scouting experience. When communicating about the program with an especially young boy, he would talk about how Scouts learn to do all kinds of cool activities.

For those who are older, perhaps in middle school, he said he would stress they could get a lot out of the experience, such as bike riding, mountain climbing and more.

Josh Nelson, the Scout coordinator in Campton Township, said he also is an Eagle Scout. He said he has helped work on many projects, including Richmond’s rain garden. Among other projects, a Scout is working on designing a dog park, and another is creating a foot bridge and nature walk trail.

He said it is a worthwhile endeavor for Scouts to work to become Eagle Scouts.

“I’ve known people who’ve gotten jobs because they are Eagle Scouts,” said Nelson, who added, “The amount of doors that it opens … I could talk for hours.”

But those doors have to be opened. He said accomplishing such goals will take work.

“You have to want it,” Nelson said. “It’s not going to be handed to you.”

Elburn Boy Scout raising money for Marklund Walk of a Lifetime will be Saturday at Marklund

Marklund is a nonprofit agency serving adults and children with severe developmental disabilities. On Saturday, Simmons, a member of Boy Scout Troop 7 in Elburn, is organizing a walk to raise $8,000 to buy another therapy bike for Marklund.

Simmons is organizing the event for his Eagle Scout project. Part of the requirements for a Boy Scout to re-

ceive the Eagle Scout award is to do a project that benefits the community.

Walk of a Lifetime will be from 4 to 10 p.m. at Marklund, 1S450 Wyatt Drive near Geneva in the Mill Creek subdivision.

The event will start with an opening flag ceremony at 4 p.m., followed by a ceremonial lap by Marklund residents.

After the closing ceremo-

ny at 8 p.m., the movie “Field of Dreams” will be shown on the baseball field on the Marklund campus. Registration for the walk is $50 a person, and is available by going to the website, www.walkofalifetiime.myevent.com.

Man pleads guilty to impersonating police officer in St. Charles in 2013

Skyler Charles Petrancosta pleaded guilty to the felony Friday. In 2013, St. Charles police reported Petrancosta approached a group of children Aug. 31 at the Davis Primary School parking lot. He identi-

fied himself as an undercover narcotics officer and patted the children down, police had said.

Petrancosta Skyler Charles was sentenced Petrancosta to 18 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections and mandatory supervised release, which is another name for parole, according to re-

cords.

Records indicate the prison sentence and parole set in Kane County shall be concurrent to a term imposed by DeKalb County courts for a 2013 domestic battery case.

Petrancosta was given credit for 63 days served – three days in the Kane County Jail and 60 days in the DeKalb County Jail, records show.

He also must pay $85 in fines and $400 in costs, according to records.

BATAVIA – During a public hearing Tuesday on Batavia School District 101’s proposed $87.6 million budget for the 2015-16 school year, a few residents complained about the budget being incomplete.

“There is no explanation for anything,” said resident Sylvia Keppel, in addressing board members. “This is a wholly inadequate budget. ... If you approve the budget as is, you should be ashamed of yourself. We hold you accountable to be stewards of our tax dollars.”

Batavia resident Ron Rechenmacher told board members he echoed Keppel’s comments.

Another resident criticized the district for “nickel-and-diming” residents.

Batavia school board President Cathy Dremel said the district continues to work on becoming more transparent.

Tony Inglese is the district’s new chief financial officer after Kris Monn, who was the district’s assistant superintendent for finance and operations, left the district to

become the new school superintendent for Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201.

Batavia School District 101 is projecting a budget with a $306,116 surplus for the coming year. The budget shows revenues of $87.9 million and expenses of $87.6 million, for a surplus of $306,116. In the proposed budget, property tax revenues are expected to grow slightly from $72.4 million to $72.7 million. Property taxes comprise more than 80 percent of the district’s funding sources.

The budget projects general state aid will go down from $3 million to about $2.8 million.

Key expenditure assumptions include $1.3 million in capital projects, including an estimated $441,500 for replacing the boiler at Rotolo Middle School, $282,250 in parking lot improvements at Grace McWayne Elementary School, and $90,200 in athletic field improvements at H.C. Storm Elementary School.

The board is set to vote on the budget at its Sept. 22 meeting.

Kane County prosecutor charged with DUI

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com A Kane County assistant state’s attorney, who prosecutes felony cases, was charged with driving under the influence and having a blood-alcohol level at more than double the legal limit of 0.08 percent, court records show.

Kathleen R. Doyen, 30, of Chicago was charged Aug. 15, after she was pulled over

by Carol Stream police about 12:30 a.m., according to an arrest report. Doyen’s blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.168 percent at 1:03 a.m. in a preliminary breath test and

0.165 percent at 2:28 a.m., according to the report. The legal limit in Illinois is 0.08 percent.

She also was charged with improper lane use and speeding, accused of drivKathleen R. ing 67 mph in a Doyen 45 mph zone in the 600 block of North Avenue in a 2014 Nissan Altima while traveling east, according to an arrest report.

The Carol Stream officer followed Doyen from County Farm Road almost to the Wheaton Christian Center,

at 610 E. North Ave., noting he “had to activate my siren three times to finally bring the Nissan to a stop in front of the entrance,” according to the arrest report.

The officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol from the vehicle and described Doyen’s eyes as “bloodshot, glassy and dilated … [her] speech was slow and confused,” according to the report.

Doyen admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages, according to the report. When officers requested Doyen participate in field sobriety tests, “Kathleen at first refused to participate … informing me that she was a Kane County

state’s attorney,” according to the arrest report.

Ultimately, Doyen participated and was found to be impaired, according to the report. Police also noted they found a small sealed bottle of vodka in the center compartment.

Her driver’s license, which lists an Elgin address, was seized as part of a minimum six-month summary suspension, according to DuPage court records. Her bond was set at $3,000, and she was released on her own recognizance.

Doyen is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 14.

Doyen has been an assis-

tant state’s attorney for the past four years, currently assigned to the felony division, according to Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon. As for the status of her employment, McMahon said it was a personnel matter, and he would not comment.

Her attorney, Gary Johnson, would not comment on the pending case, but he said Doyen “is an outstanding prosecutor and a terrific person. It would be a terrible loss to Kane County if they lost her as a prosecutor.”

Born Beverly Ruth Saltness, she was the middle daughter of Rudi and Sadie Saltness. Beverly grew up in Dawson, Minnesota, where she met Allan Hansberger in high school. She and Al married in 1950 and moved to Chicago where Al was starting a golf club manufacturing business, which was eventually called Ram Golf. Al and Bev celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in July.

Authorities also seized more than $1 million in cash, transaction ledgers, a money counter, documents proving Pilar-Lopez’s residency, banking information and money transfer slips he “admitted were related to the sale of illicit narcotics,” the release

Under state law, Pilar-Lopez is eligible for day-for-day credit. The release indicated he will get credit for at least 1,821 days served in the Kane County Jail.

The release noted he still faces charges related to a federal indictment for heroin that was being shipped to him from Arizona.

Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly Orland prosecuted the case.

Together they lived in Chicago, Hillside, West Chicago and St. Charles, Illinois. For the past 30 years they spent their winters in Borrego Springs, a desert community in Southern California.

Bev was smart, fun loving, caring, generous, and fiercely independent. She was also the consummate volunteer and philanthropist.

In her early years, she was involved with the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary at Central DuPage Hospital, was a scout leader, and was involved with the PTA. She loved to play golf and bridge and loved sewing costumes for her grandchildren.

In her later years, both she and Al supported a number of charities in Illinois, California and Oregon, including the Boys and Girls Club in Borrego Springs where they helped organize a fundraising golf tournament every year, including a charity tournament in 2015.

Bev was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many. During her four month illness, Bev was an inspiration to her family and friends because of her positive attitude and how she made the best of every moment.

She is survived by her husband, Allan; son, Gary (St. Charles, IL; Diane); and daughter, Sandy (Portland, OR; David Barr). She also leaves behind grandchildren, Adam, Alex (and Julia), Ashleigh (and Sunny), and Michael; her beloved great grandchildren, William, Ian, Max, Wyatt and Betsy; and extended family.

At her request there will be no funeral service.

ELBURN – A Chicago man who treated the Elburn Metra warming house as his own faces criminal charges after an altercation with police, according to Elburn police reports.

Police had seen Darren D. Jones at the shelter, at 422 Railroad St., numerous times overnight, but officers didn’t realize the 29-year-old treated the facility like his own hotel room or apartment until Aug. 7, police reported.

About 3 a.m. that day, Jones reported someone had taken his $27, 8-inch cube speaker after he left it there with a note indicating he would return.

When an officer arrived to review video surveillance footage, Jones claimed the theft wasn’t a big deal in a way that led the officer to believe Jones didn’t want the footage reviewed, police reported.

The video reportedly showed that Jones arrived at 2:06 a.m. Aug. 6 with several bags, which he set in different areas.

Over the next several hours, he reportedly set up a laptop computer, hung clothes, took his shirt off and occupied about 40 percent of the seating space.

Meanwhile, police reported, several commuters approached the shelter but stayed outside after looking inside.

Jones reportedly got on a train about 12:12 p.m. and returned around 2 a.m.

Police told Darren D. Jones Jones he was discouraging commuters from using the shelter as it was intended, but Jones again was at the station Aug. 11, causing a disturbance, according to reports.

Police arrived just before 2 a.m. to find Jones demanding an officer to open the doors, which police had secured a few hours before.

When Jones was told the doors would remain closed overnight because of the discovery he was staying there for extended periods of time, he yelled louder, continued his demands and referred to the shelter as “my place,” police reported.

Noticing damage to the door, an officer entered the facility to review the security video, which showed Jones pulling on the door and hitting it with the handle after it had broken off, police reported. Jones remained outside the structure and at one point struck another officer in the head and resisted arrest, according to a report.

He was charged with felony aggravated battery to a police officer, felony criminal damage to government-supported property and misdemeanor resisting or obstructing police.

BLOOMBERG NEWS When markets plummet, as they did in recent days, regulators need the answer to a crucial question: How many of the world’s banks, hedge funds and other financial institutions might be in danger?

Regulators have had since the 2008 financial crisis to figure out how to gather the information. They’ve done a lot of work – but they still don’t know the answer.

After the troubles of insurance giant AIG and others caught regulators off guard and forced governments to arrange taxpayer-backed bailouts, global leaders set out to build a financial early warning system.

It would mean monitoring the linkages among financial institutions more closely, to identify concentrations of risk in real time and across borders.

Take credit derivatives, the instruments that almost brought down AIG. They provide insurance against defaults on bonds issued by companies and countries, and allow risk to be transferred in an instant – say, from a bank in Taiwan via a dealer in London to a hedge fund in Atlanta.

To judge which institutions are most exposed to defaults, regulators need up-to-the-moment data on derivatives outstanding all over the world.

Over the past several years, national regulators have made progress in collecting this information. The European Union, U.S., Japan, China and other countries have required that derivatives trades be reported to special repositories. Problem is, they’re using different rules, and data in incompatible formats. And they have no firm plan for sharing the findings.

The result is a mess.

The Financial Stability Board, a global regulatory body that monitors the data-collection project, said in a July progress report: “Some authorities have noted that reporting seems to have become more fragmented currently than it was when reporting was solely voluntary.”

This also makes compliance unnecessarily complex for financial institutions, which must grapple with different and sometimes conflicting requirements across multiple jurisdictions.

It’s something that regulators at least recognize the problem. The FSB has started a review that will report on barriers to sharing derivatives data at the next summit of the Group of 20 nations, in November.

Meanwhile, securities regulators are working to create detailed guidance on how to collect data in a format they all can understand.

That’s fine, but a greater sense of urgency doesn’t seem too much to ask. The status quo plainly isn’t good enough.

Maybe the current market turmoil will jolt G-20 leaders into turning up the pressure. No one wants a panic to draw attention to the weaknesses of the system in a much more dramatic way.

Kaneland happily sets ‘challenging course’

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Poll Kane County Chronicle-area boys and girls cross country coaches about any 2015 scheduling shifts and the answers are polarizing.

Some, such as St. Charles North boys coach Kevin Harrington, admit to enacting “quite a bit of a juggle” on the itinerary. Others take solace in standing pat with familiar weekend meets.

When it comes to its annual Larry Eddington Invitational on Sept. 19, Kaneland stands in the rare position of changing while staying the same. The longstanding meet will return to its Elburn Forest Preserve roots in 2015 after taking a detour to Kaneland’s new on-campus course last season.

“That’s what the athletes want,” Knights boys coach Chad Clarey said. “It’s really what that meet is all about: the kids and what they can do on a more rugged and challenging course.”

Because Kaneland hosted a Class 2A boys regional last season on its far flatter, on-campus course, officials elected to move the Eddington from Elburn Woods for a dry run.

Although visiting athletes and coaches praised the new layout and the meet’s organization, at least one team gnashed its teeth upon passing the forest preserve on the way to Kaneland.

The shift serves at least one other purpose for Clarey’s team, whose top returners include senior Austin Kintz and sophomore Matt Richtman.

Elburn Woods’ hilly course offers athletes a preview of coming attractions for a state series that includes similarly sloped paths at regionals and sectionals.

“Unfortunately,” Clarey said, “that flat path that you’re trying to get for peak races isn’t going to come into the question until we potentially make it to the state meet.”

Also back to boost the cause is senior Nina Olshever, who coach Shari Hayes said “needed a break from cross country” in 2014 but returned on the heels of a solid junior track season.

For all the familiar faces, Hayes found an influx of cross country newcomers who came from other sports and are trying distance running for the first time.

“They’re just getting used to running,” Hayes said. “I have no idea where they’re actually going to end up in the season.”

‘Dogs ripe with enthusiasm:

Success breeds success, the adage goes.

The Batavia girls program knows more than most, entering 2015 with much of its youthful core back from last season’s 11th-place state team, plus a few eager athletes waiting in the wings.

Less than a month before the Bulldogs earned the best 3A state finish in program history, the Rotolo Middle School eighth-grade girls won an IESA state title.

“I would say there’s enthusiasm every year here because of how well they’re doing at Rotolo,” said Bulldogs coach Chad Hillman, whose wife, Kate, coaches the middle schoolers. “So we’re following up on that because when we get the girls here, they’ve already been running and succeeding and part of it for two or three years.”

They really did. That’s the ‘Saints’ way,’ and I’m so grateful and happy how many people came out and supported us tonight.”

After the Saints fell in Set 1 in large part due to failed serves, Kull rallied her troops for a win in the second set to force the decisive third set.

The Saints (1-0) had 11 missed serves on the night.

Kull got to see the good – the

comeback – and some of the bad, a.k.a. what needs work.

“That’s indicative of a first game,” Kull said of the missed serves. “I think that we saw some really good things and definitely things that need some work. It was kind of a serving nightmare for both teams. We stayed in the games at times when they missed serves. So I think it got better as the game went on, but it’s not something overly concerning.”

Junior outside hitter Kyla Augustine had five of her teamhigh nine kills in the third set and gave the Kyla Saints a boost Augustine on the offensive side of the ball.

“Once we got our momentum going, we were able to connect on both the offensive and defensive sides of the

ball,” Augustine said. “I think shaking off those first match nerves and everything was big and once we did, we were able to come back and play the way we wanted to.”

The third set wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Saints, especially when Kull was forced to use her final timeout of the match as Wheaton North (0-1) rallied for five of six points to take a 21-17 lead.

Timeouts proved to be vital for Kull with her team, especially the final one, as the Saints went on to score eight of the last 10 points to win the match. The final point of the night was a kill that was drilled by left-hander Avery Macklin.

“It was a lot of us needing to relax and focus out there,” said Macklin a 6-foot-3 senior.

“Coach just stressed doing what you know how to do and having confidence. That was the biggest thing for us, especially in the last two sets ...

knowing that we had it in us and that we could do it.”

Macklin (seven kills) Avery and sophomore Klaudia Macklin Sowizral (six kills) helped lead the way offensively for East, and really helped counter the Falacons attack. Twin sisters Grace and Allie Tiesman paced Wheaton North, combining for 16 kills.

Regardless out the way the season started – at least in the opening set – the Saints come away with a win, and that’s priority number one.

“It was not pretty,” Kull said. “But we’ve said throughout [the offseason] that it’s going to take the entire team to pick up wins this year. A lot of girls played tonight and did a great job picking us up and that’s what we’re going to need moving forward.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East girls volleyball team took the floor Tuesday night for its season opener at home against Wheaton North in front of a large crowd, including a packed student section.

As much as the Saints loved the support, a lot of which came from the football program, the combination of the intense environment and first game jitters caused a slow start. However, after losing the first set, East rallied to win, 1825, 25-20, 25-23 to start the season on a high note.

Coach Jennie Kull has learned, in her long tenure as the Saints volleyball coach, to take a win any way she can get it, but knows there were nerves that went into a lot of the mistakes they made Tuesday night.

“Coach just stressed doing what you know how to do and having confidence.”

Newcomer Safranski paces BC in XC debut KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ROCK FALLS – Megan Safranski decided to change things up.

The Burlington Central junior usually prepares for soccer season over the summer months. However, this year, instead of running after soccer balls, she is running toward a finish line.

Safranski’s cross country debut was a success at the Rocket Run at Centennial Park, covering the 2.95-mile course in 18:59 seconds to edge runner up Megan Grady by about six seconds.

“It feels great,” Safranski said. “I cannot stress how much this is to my coaches, especially with this being my first year on the cross country team. It’s just amazing.

There’s just so many awesome people here. I couldn’t be luckier.”

Safranski and Grady filtered out of the starting line as the top two runners, and held that distinction throughout the duration of the race.

The two were neck-and-neck until about the 2-mile mark, when Safranski began to pull away.

“I just wanted to make my school proud, my team proud and my family proud,” Safranski said.

Safranski and Grady encountered an usual experience toward the final mile.

When they approached a group of Central fans, Grady wondered why fans wearing Rockets blue and white were cheering for her – yelling out her first name from across a pond.

“We were running, and all these people were cheering for ‘Megan,’” Grady said. “I was just like, ‘Is your name Megan?’ and she was like, ‘Yeah,’ and I was wondering why everyone was cheering.”

Grady, who is poised to be one of the top Class 1A runners in the northwest corner of Illinois, found out while racing about it being Safranski’s cross country debut.

“She said it was her first year out,” Grady said. “I’m glad she’s out. She can push me.”

Safranski is hoping her switch can lead to bigger and better achievements.

“My coach and my teammates thought I would be really good at cross country,” Safranski said. “With my endurance, I tried it and I just love it.”

BC finished fifth among 13 teams. The Rockets scored 137 points. Champion Rockford Christian had 55. Natalia Rodriguez followed Sa-

Central finished as runner-up in the 11-team boys race, with its team score of 63 trailing champion Rockford Christian (31). Nick Harvey finished seventh for the Rockets in 16:52.

“So far, so good,” Chad Hillman said. “Just trying to get everybody back into the groove of everything that comes with the fall at school.

Training shifts, adding some intensity to the training and the schedule, of course, when you get back to school.”

Vikes vets set tone: Recent Geneva graduate Mitchael Deamantopulos parlayed his one and only boys cross country season into a collegiate running opportunity at Illinois-Chicago.

Vikings coach Bob Thomson still beams about the turn of events, but he’s also overjoyed about a related development: Geneva returns much of its core from last season, as the program bids for its first team trip downstate since 2010.

“We’re excited like we haven’t been for a while,” Thomson said. “It seems like as good as we get at the end of the season, we’d be senior-heavy in our top seven. But now we’re excited to have a good group of kids with experience coming back that we haven’t had for a while.”

Thomson touts the Vikings’ depth as a valuable resource.

Incumbent seniors Brian Caskey, Julian Desens and Jake Tracey have welcomed the return of classmate Steve Creger, who Thomson said “looks like he’s pushing back into the top again” after nagging injuries curtailed his development as an underclassman.

“We’re just excited about getting to our first meet and seeing how things are going to pan out for us,” said Thomson, who also coaches the Geneva girls.

However, a new hybrid approach is gaining favor. It makes sense only for some patients – and it sounds as if the reader’s friend is one of those patients. In yesterday’s column, I explained both angioplasty with stenting and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

With that groundwork, let me explain the thinking behind the new hybrid approach: • Angioplasty cannot reach and open all blockages of the heart’s arteries. For example, it can’t open blockages that extend a long distance in the artery or that are located at a fork of the artery.

Significant blockages that can’t be opened by angioplasty need bypass surgery.

• However, when arteries can be opened by an angioplasty using

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the latest types of stents (called drug-eluting stents), the long-term results are very good. And angioplasty is far easier to endure than CABG: It doesn’t require general anesthesia, causes fewer complications and has a shorter recovery time.

• Traditionally, in people with multiple blocked arteries, if CABG had to be done for one artery, the surgeons often performed bypass surgery on the other blocked arteries as well, while the chest was opened. Yet performing surgery on arteries that could be opened just as well by angioplasty prolonged the time of surgery, and the potential for complications from surgery and anesthesia.

The new hybrid procedure seeks to achieve the best of both angioplasty and surgery: • It uses surgery when a blockage occurs in the biggest artery that supplies blood to the heart, the left anterior descending (LAD) artery.

• The surgery on that artery is

minimally invasive. It requires only a small incision in the chest (not cutting through the breastbone). The heart is left beating; no heart-lung machine (with its potential complications) is needed.

• The artery used for the bypass is an artery in the chest called the left internal mammary artery (LIMA). This restores blood flow to the LAD for many years, longer than when veins are used or when angioplasty opens the LAD blockage.

• The other blocked arteries are then opened via angioplasty, either immediately following the bypass or within the next day or two. (I’ve put an illustration of the hybrid procedure on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

The new hybrid approach has not been proven to be superior in any way to traditional CABG. However, several good studies have found that it is not inferior. And since it involves less surgery and allows a faster recovery, this may make it preferable.

Teen faces complexion problems Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and beginning to get every teen’s worst nightmare – pimples and blackheads.

I’ve always been a very neat and tidy individual, and a bad complexion will make me terribly unhappy. I’d like to go to see a dermatologist to get advice right now before I get a completely bad complexion, but my parents think it isn’t necessary.

They told me they both had a few pimples and blackheads when they were teens, but their complexions cleared up in about a year and never got very bad. They told me that it is normal for all teens to have a few minor complexion problems and that only a few have severe problems.

Well, I don’t want to be one of “only a few.”

I think I should see a dermatologist before it gets worse. Do you think I am being selfish, as my dad keeps telling me?

According to the medical reference book, “You and Your Health,” about 80 percent of teenagers experience some type of complexion outbreaks, but most usually are no worse than a few pimples and blackheads.

During the teen years, the body’s glands start producing sex hormones, which circulate throughout the body.

The hormones stimulate oil glands, causing them to over-produce oil, which cannot reach the skin’s surface. The glands bulge and produce a small white dot, a “whitehead,” which undergoes a chemical change and becomes black, a “blackhead.”

If the gland ruptures, it

Proper diet, exercise and rest are important in maintaining a healthy complexion. It’s also important to wash your face at least three times a day with a mild soap to remove excess oils.

In recent columns, I mentioned coin flipping. Suppose you toss a coin 19 times and it always comes down tails. What are the odds on the next flip?

While you muse on that, let’s turn to this deal. South gets into six spades. How should he play after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, I agree with South’s opening bid. Despite the lack of a club stopper, the hand contains 20 prime points with eight control points (counting two for each ace and one for each king).

A typical two-no-trump opening has only seven control points.

North made a transfer bid, over which South’s four-diamond rebid (a superaccept) indicated at least four-card spade support and the diamond ace while denying the club ace. North repeated the transfer to make South the declarer, then bid what he thought his partner could make.

Mirror distribution – each partner having the same hand shape – is usually troublesome.

This deal is no exception.

With an unavoidable club loser, it looks as though declarer must work out which opponent has the diamond queen – but not if he knows about elimination and endplay.

South wins with dummy’s club ace, draws trumps, cashes his heart winners, and exits with his last club. Whichever opponent takes the trick must either lead a diamond, finding the queen, or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

Finally, back to the coin-toss question. In theory, it is still 50-50, but you should bet tails. It is highly likely that the coin is imperfect and more likely to land tails.
