Past D-117 superintendent to lead D-302 on interim basis

Sorrick will begin his role today. Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler is in his last week in the role. Schuler starts next week as the superintendent at Wheaton

Warrenville School District 200.

The District 302 board approved the selection, but it was not unanimous.

St. Charles to remove more ash trees in fall

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – More than half of the remaining ash trees in city-owned rights of way in St. Charles will be removed this fall based on their conditions, said Chris Adesso, the city’s public services manager.

Adesso gave the city’s Government Services Committee on Monday an update on the 326 remaining and standing ash trees. The trees earlier this year in the spring were ranked into four categories ranging from mostly dead trees to trees that showed no signs of the emerald ash borer.

The spring inventory results showed 47 trees were 90 to 100 percent dead, and 134 trees were 50 to 90 percent dead.

“We would like to move forward with the removal of the 181 trees,” Adesso said.

Of the 181 trees that will be removed this fall, 99 of them are located in the northeastern part of the city, Adesso said. The trees will be removed by Skyline Tree Services, who is currently under contract with the city.

Skyline’s three-year contract was approved in 2012 and project costs are budgeted, including the most recent cost of $64,000.

The city also has an existing contract for ash tree replacement, Adesso said.

Fifth Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis asked about the survival rate of replacement trees that were planted. Adesso gave an mortality rate estimate of five percent for the trees.

Second Ward Alderman Art Lemke asked how often a resident should fill the tree watering bags. Adesso said the bags should be filled whenever they are empty because they are designed for slow release watering as needed.

The board agreed to pay Sorrick $90,000 to assume all superintendent duties and direct the search for the longterm superintendent, according to a news release distributed at the meeting.

After the meeting, Sorrick said it’s possible the district could have a long-term superintendent in place before that time. He said he is limited to 100 days by limitations on the

TRS, or the teacher retirement system. He said his goal is to help the district get the best superintendent.

“Then you don’t have to worry about that,” he said.

School board President Cheryl Krauspe praised Sorrick and said in a news release that “we all definitely felt his energy and passion and excitement for improved educational performance and the fact that he believed he could make a positive difference in our organizational

system, even when limited to the number of days that we have him.”

Valente said he would rather the board have hired a superintendent that could be “more conducive to our schedule.” Board member Peter Lopatin said he believed a reasonable compromise had been reached and that the board could address any potential gap if it should arise.

“I’m really pleased we have made this decision,” Lopatin said.

Kirk is part of a growing number of people who are turning to e-cigarettes.

About 6 percent of all adults have tried e-cigarettes, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, with estimates nearly doubling from 2010.

Those who use e-cigarettes “vape” rather than smoke. Vaping utilizes a propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin-based liquid, mixed with small amounts of nicotine and food grade flavoring

that are then vaporized in a small battery powered atomizer, and is designed to simulate the experience of smoking. Kirk, 43, said he turned to e-cigarettes after he quit smoking more than a year ago.

“I come from a long line of smokers,” Kirk said. “I

didn’t want to be a smoker anymore.”

Since he has switched to e-cigarettes, Kirk said he feels healthier, ticking off several ways his health has improved.

“My lung capacity is stronger,” Kirk said. “I started sleeping better. My sinuses aren’t dried out. My teeth are whiter than they used to be.”

The verdict is still out, however, on the health impacts of e-cigarettes. Centers of Disease Control officials said although e-cigarettes appear to have far fewer of the toxins found in smoke

compared to traditional cigarettes, the impact of e-cigarettes on long-term health must be studied. They said research is needed to assess how e-cigarette marketing could affect initiation and use of traditional cigarettes, particularly among young people.

“If large numbers of adult smokers become users of both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes – rather than using e-cigarettes to quit cigarettes completely – the net public health effect could be quite negative,” Dr. Tim

Wilson said he can’t say whether vaping is a healthier alternative.

“But most people in the vaping community can see the health benefits and financial benefits,” he said. “Ten milliliters of liquid costs $10, [and the amount of liquid] is the equivalent of 4½ packs of cigarettes.”

Wilson said he opened the shop so he could help people stop smoking.

“I have probably helped about 200 people stop smoking since opening,” Wilson said.

Tim McAfee, director of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health, said, according to a statement.

The increasing popularity of vaping has presented new challenges to restaurant and bar owners. The Smoke-free Illinois Act, which took effect Jan. 1, 2008, prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces.

“We kind of don’t say anything unless people complain,” said Bob Karas, the owner and general manager of several restaurants in the area, including Rookies Sports Pub & Grill in St. Charles. “We so far haven’t had many people use these in the restaurant portion of our establishments. At the bar, we do see it every once in a while.”

He noted Chicago recently

banned vaping in indoor public places.

“We would be happy to see a clear-cut rule on this to minimize confusion,” Karas said. “It’s hard for restaurants to draw lines and make rules and then risk losing customers.”

In April, the federal Food and Drug Administration proposed treating e-cigarettes as tobacco products with rules such as a ban on sales to those under 18 and warning labels.

The American Medical Association also has urged a ban on kid-appealing flavors and other moves to keep e-cigarettes out of young hands.

Black Forest Vapor owner Jason Wilson said his store doesn’t sell its products to minors. In Illinois, it is illegal for minors under the age of 18 to buy tobacco products.

“You have to be 18 and older to vape,” Wilson said.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m.

Thursday at the library, 127 James St., Geneva.

Board President Esther Steel said the name of the successful applicant would be made public at the meeting.

“The board did not want to announce who until Thursday, when we vote on the appointment,” Steel wrote in a text message.

The library board met in two recent closed sessions with each of the applicants, Jennifer Bruggeman, Robert McQuillan, Ellen Fultz Schmid, Zachary Ploppert, Charles O. Ellenbaum and William Broderick.

McQuillan, a regional sales manager, is a co-founder of Geneva TaxFACTS, a local taxpayer watchdog group. He lost a bid for mayor against incumbent Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns in 2013.

Ploppert, an elementary school teacher, lost two bids to be elected as an alderman in the 1st Ward. He was appointed to the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission.

Ellenbaum is a retired anthropology professor and served as a library board member when he lived in Glen Ellyn.

Schmid is a past employee of the library, having worked there 13 years until she left in March to become a law librarian at the Kane County Law Library.

Bruggeman currently works as a human resources and risk manager at Batavia Park District. Broderick is a human resources consultant and a member of the Huntley Tea Party.

The library released the applicants’ names and backgrounds after the Kane County Chronicle filed a Freedom of Information Act. The vacancy was created when board member Steve Andersson resigned to pursue his campaign for state representative in the Nov. 4 general election. Andersson won the Republican primary March 18 and does not face opposition in the general election.

The person who fills the vacancy would serve until a two-year seat becomes open in the April 2015 election, officials said.

And for good reason: Rob Luedtke had secured the part of Mike Teavee in the Avenue J Studios production, which ended a four-show run Sunday at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre. Soon after the cast of 5- to 17-year-olds took their final bow downstage, the kids

‘Wonka’ cast takes last bow in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A Sugar Grove man died in a crash that occurred Friday afternoon near Sugar Grove. He is Rodger Lambert, 73, of the 300 block of Maple Avenue in Sugar Grove. According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, it does not appear there were any other vehicles involved, and investigators are trying to determine whether the driver suffered a medical event before the crash.

Kane County Coroner officials could not be reached for comment Monday.

About 5:15 p.m., the Kane County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Densmore Road, south of Hankes Road, for a report of a pickup truck that had crashed into a utility pole. The crash occurred near Prestbury subdivision. According to the sheriff’s office, Lambert was driving south on Densmore and left the roadway for an unknown reason and struck the pole. Sugar Grove firefighters responded to the scene, and an EMS helicopter was dispatched, but Lambert was pronounced dead at the scene.

An opponent of common core, McConnell said Shakespeare was the only English author included in the standards.

“It’s frightening,” McConnell said.

But Del Santo said the standards do not stop a school district from adopting a curriculum that includes other English authors.

Reilly said as she has traveled Illinois, teachers are concerned with how the student assessment will be done when they will be judged on the outcome.

“I feel like the conversation needs to continue,” Reilly said. “In second grade, I know the destination they need before they move to a third-grade classroom. Common core gives me the autonomy to teach those skills.

Some districts are getting there in a Cadillac and others [in a car] with three wheels and no gas – but are expected to reach the same destination.”

Pollard said it will take at least three years to get some success from implementing the standards and she felt

McConnell said the only way to fight it is for superintendents to band together and refuse to implement it.

A Geneva man faces additional counts of aggravated driving under the influence in a Naperville crash last month that killed two people after the car he was driving landed in a quarry.

Michael Szot, 21, of Geneva is being charged with nine counts of aggravated DUI causing death. He originally was charged with four counts of aggravated DUI and two counts of reckless homicide.

Szot pleaded not guilty in a court appearance Monday in a DuPage County courtroom.

His next appearance is set for Oct. 2.

Police and firefighters about 1:59 a.m. July 19 responded to the intersection of Aurora Avenue and Eagle Street for a report of a vehicle that had driven into a Naperville Park District quarry.

Szot admitted to police he had been smoking marijuana earlier that day, and he had been drinking rum shots and beer at a local bar before the crash, prosecutors said at Szot’s bail

hearing last month.

He was released from DuPage County Jail after posting 10 percent of his $250,000 bail.

Prosecutors said a marijuana pipe had been found in Szot’s pocket. Szot’s blood-alcohol level was 0.142, above the legal limit of 0.08.

If found guilty of the charges, Szot faces a maximum penalty of up to 28 years in prison.

The two passengers in the vehicle – Mihirtej Boddupalli, 21, of Lisle and Sajaad Safiullah Syed, 21, of Naperville – were unable to escape from the 2007 Chevy Impala Szot was driving. They were located by fire and police divers in the car, which was 50 feet under water, and were taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where they were pronounced dead.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates Szot was driving west on Aurora Avenue and left the roadway at Eagle Street, crashing into several trees and landing in the quarry on the northwest corner of the intersection.

GENEVA – Illinois adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010, but educators, parents and school officials still are wary of what it means for their students, according to a roundtable discussion Monday hosted

by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield.

New Illinois State Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core establishes new standards for math and English language arts; provides consistent learning expectations for students; and provides higher, clearer, deeper real-life learning for college and career.

Forty-three states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core Standards, according to its website, www.corestandards.org.

“Several states have slowed it down,” Hultgren said of the common core standards being implemented. “I think it’s an important thing to talk about. I also wanted to see how we could work together … and help facilitate conversations of what is working well, what’s not … and how to achieve the goal all of us have, the best possible education for our kids.”

Those participating in the 90-minute roundtable discussion were Pam Reilly, a second-grade teacher from Sandwich who was 2013 Illinois Teacher of the Year, Kane County Regional Superintendent Patricia Dal Santo, Waubonsee Community College President Christine Sobek, St. Charles District 303 school board president Steven Spurling and member Judith McConnell, and two St. Charles mothers, Michelle Pollard, a homeschool parent, of five and Joyce Palignoff, a parent of three.

“The Common Core is not a curriculum, it’s standards, and you design your curriculum to meet those standards,” Dal Santo said.

Music Matters moves to former Louise White School in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The former Louise White School has a new life as a school of music.

In June, Music Matters School of Music moved into the 1893 building, at 24 N. Washington Ave. in downtown Batavia. Music Matters previously had been on Wilson Street in downtown Batavia for eight years.

“We thought it would be great to be inside a house of education,” said Jeff Matter, the Music Matters director and a lifelong Batavia resident, during Saturday’s open house. “It’s been a labor of love to bring this building back to one we could all enjoy.”

As it so happens, Matter was celebrating his 36th birthday on Saturday.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday,” he said.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke took note of the building’s history.

Schielke went to school in the building and is a cousin of White, who taught in the Batavia school system for 10 years.

Chris Walk funds training with $25K Dunham Fund grant KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A local heroin abuse prevention group this month provided funds for police training with a $25,000 grant it received, according to a news release.

Chris Walk Against Substance Abuse received the grant from the Aurora-based Dunham Fund, which is a philanthropic organization that provides financial support to qualifying organizations devoted to education, enterprise and community development.

The grant was used to bring the Desert Snow Criminal Interdiction Training Program Aug. 13 through 15 to 42 local and state officers at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, according to the release. Desert Snow LLC has conducted intense and relevant criminal and terrorist apprehension training since 1989.

Desert Snow is a primary trainer of the United States Customs and Border Patrol

The United States Border Patrol Campo Station Abatement Team reported the seizure of $20,000, as well as multiple seizures totaling 258 pounds of drugs with a total estimated value of more than $2.3 million after two weeks of applying tactics from a Desert Storm training, according to the release.

Chris Walk Against Substance Abuse is a nonprofit namesake cause in memory of St. Charles resident Chris Foley, who died of a heroin overdose in 2007. His mother, Vicki Foley, is president of Chris Walk and a Shaw Media employee.

The mission of Chris Walk is to secure funding for heroin abuse prevention and provide support to those dealing with addiction.

Picking on for-profit colleges THE WASHINGTON POST By 2020, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world – so President Barack Obama told Congress in his 2009 State of the Union address, when he called on every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training.

Those are laudable aspirations. But it is hard to see how the country can fulfill them, given the administration’s animus toward the for-profit colleges that provide the only realistic educational opportunity for millions of underserved Americans.

The for-profit higher education sector is already reeling from the administration’s aggressive treatment of California-based Corinthian Colleges. Now it is girding itself – “cautiously pessimistic,” said one industry spokesman – for final language on federal regulations that would establish stringent standards for programs that prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation. The Education Department has issued no timetable for the release of the rules, which are said to be still in the works.

The department’s earlier proposals – cutting off financial aid to career-oriented programs whose graduates have high student-loan debt relative to their incomes –would, industry officials say, effectively force thousands of programs to close while causing others to limit admissions to students who pose no risk.

There should be no tolerance of programs that are unscrupulous in how they use taxpayer-funded student aid or prepare their students for careers. But the administration’s proposed approach essentially singles out the for-profit sector and applies arbitrary debt-to-earning metrics that many public and private nonprofit institutions would be hard-pressed to meet. Although the standards would apply to all career-training programs, the for-profit sector would be most affected since its degree programs would have to be in compliance but degree programs offered by public and private nonprofit institutions would not.

Why not come up with standards that make sense and apply them to all schools that accept federal student loan aid? If there are problems with how schools prepare their students or use public-supported dollars, devise a mechanism that zeroes in on the wrongdoers without jeopardizing programs that responsibly fulfill their obligations.

The for-profit sector can play a useful role in helping meet Obama’s goal of more higher education for more Americans. Not only do they account for 20 percent of the associate degrees granted in the United States, but they also serve poor and working-class students who have little chance of entry into traditional higher education. Consider, for example, that 31 percent of the nation’s African-American college graduates and 28 percent of Hispanic graduates came from for-profit schools in 2012-13 (the latest year for which data are available).

The for-profit sector has shrunk under the weight of attacks of recent years, and over-stressed community colleges cannot fill the gap. If the gainful employment rules are promulgated as has been proposed, opportunities for non-traditional students are sure to become even more limited.

Randy Hultgren afraid to hold public town hall meetings in the 14th Congressional District during this August recess? I contacted both his Geneva and Washington offices to find out a schedule for public town hall meetings. I was told by his Geneva office that the scheduling was done in Washington, but I could make a private appointment with Hultgren or his staff. Calling the Washington office, I was told there were no plans to hold public town halls. When I asked why he would not hold any public meetings, I was told I could make a private appointment.

Why private? I’m not the only one who has been told this!

Is Hultgren afraid to justify or explain his radical positions and voting record in public? Why? Now, I know most people do not

follow voting records of their representatives, as this takes time and effort. If you look through their smooth talking points and prepared, sanitized “public” statements, looking at their voting record will give you a very clear picture of where they stand on important issues, and Hultgren’s doesn’t represent the interests of everyday, middle-class workers in the 14th.

I would suggest all voters spend a little time to investigate Hultgren’s voting record. You will find it very interesting and informative.

You can find a lot of information at votesmart.org, a nonpartisan

group that collects and organizes information on legislation, voting records, interest groups and public statements on a long list of national issues.

Don’t be fooled by the title of the bills; look at what the bill really contains. Do your research and then hold your “representative” responsible.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North girls tennis coach Eve Tubman jokes that she “likes to send her lineup into the blender every so often.”

Whatever the mixing and matching churns out in the upper half of her doubles lineup, Tubman is confident the final product should serve the North Stars well.

North’s season is scheduled to begin today with a match at Metea Valley. Consider the first few weeks open auditions for spots in Tubman’s lineup, where some combination of senior Lianne Anderson and juniors Brittany Rohrsen, Emma Spellman and Morgan Rerko are likely to compose what projects as the team’s overall strength – No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Three of the four were big pieces for North last season, with Rerko’s sophomore season marred by a wrist injury.

“They really all have some great, different skills,” Tubman said. “Emma has a big serve and some big groundstrokes. Brittany’s like a workhorse and just is very steady. Lianne has a huge backhand and is very competitive.

And Morgan has such great footwork.

“And I want the girls to have fun but I

want them to take care of business first, so personalities are going to come into that.”

Anderson and Rerko both have substantial histories playing alongside Rohrsen. Anderson and Rohrsen played No. 1 doubles together for much of last season, and would like to play with Rohrsen again – or at least somebody who possesses many of her qualities.

“We had a lot of long matches that were pretty close last year, and she’s the one that energizes me mostly, and I need someone like that,” said Anderson, hunting her first IHSA State Tournament berth as a senior. “Also someone with a strong forehand because I like my backhand a lot better.”

Rerko’s history with Rohrsen extends further back.

“We played together freshman year on varsity and we won conference for 4 doubles, and we just play really well together,” Rerko said. “Unfortunately last year I couldn’t play with her because of my wrist but I’m hoping to play with her or Emma Spellman in doubles, and if not, I can also see myself playing singles. But doubles is my go-to.”

Rerko’s return to form is one of the top causes for optimism that North could be more competitive this fall with Tri-Cities powers

A soccer injury resulted in broken bones in Rerko’s left wrist that sidelined her for most of last tennis season.

When she returned in the season’s final weeks, she was wearing a brace that made her less comfortable, and her confidence was shaken.

“I would always be so scared to hit anything,” Rerko said. “I just felt mentally weak and physically weak. But that’s changed over the past year.”

Even if North excels at 1 and 2 doubles as Tubman envisions, more points will be needed to score team victories.

Sarah Oshana and Mackenzie Solomon should be part of the doubles depth solution as North grooms several new singles prospects. Finding wins at the lower end of the singles and doubles spectrums loom large.

“I think our goal at least is to make all the doubles slots pretty strong this year, and then work on our singles players so next year they have some experience behind them that will help them later,” Anderson said.

The Cougars’ 2014 success at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark matches that matter-of-factness. With three regular season home games remaining before the Midwest League playoffs begin next week, the club can finish with no worse than a .746 home winning percentage.

On the flip side, the possibility still exists for a sub-.500 record on the road.

Everything resets in the postseason, but maintaining a far from grim mindset about road games can only benefit the team with the best record in affiliated baseball.

“It’s kind of fun to be on the road a little bit,” first baseman Jacob Rogers said.

“We enjoy getting to spend some more time with the guys and stuff like that.”

The Cougars are in the middle of their final lengthy road trip of the season, six games in Burlington and Cedar Rapids.

If necessary, they will play two of three games at home in their opening postseason series, and would be on the road for no more than two consecutive games after that.

Each of the three tiers of the playoffs are best-of-3.

Manager Mark Johnson and a few players are completing their second summer of MWL “roadies,” but the league’s 15 other outposts make varying impressions no matter which player is polled.

Johnson said, “I love Wisconsin.” when addressing his preferred spot in the more oft-traveled Western Division. Of the Eastern Division, which each West club visits every other season, he said: “You can’t beat Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne’s by far the best.”

Righty James Pugliese stumps for Dayton, another East team, as his favorite destination. The Dragons, an affiliate of the in-state Cincinnati Reds, have sold out more than 1,000 consecutive games, extending a record streak encompassing all American professional sports.

“It’s a privilege to play in this league,” Pugliese said. “It’s all good areas, good locations and nice fields and stuff.”

Infielder Chesny Young, the lone 2014 draft pick of the parent Cubs on the team, agrees.

Still, Young admits his perspective is skewed considering his shadow might have seen the Cougars’ team bus least. For that reason – plus the fact he began this season playing for Mercy University – he doesn’t sense the same finality.

“Maybe to the guys,” Young said.

“I’ve only been here for three weeks, so it hasn’t really sunk into me yet, but I’m sure the guys are happy. …

We’re just going to push through this last little stretch and be strong for the playoffs.”

The Cougars, who won the firsthalf Western Division title, still aren’t certain of their first-round opponent, but will open the playoffs on the road Sept. 3.

“Who knows where we’re going to be,” Pugliese said, “but we’re going to be there.”

Six degrees of JRW: The Cougars broadcast the final outs of Saturday’s Little League World Series U.S. championship over the video board as early-arriving fans filed in.

Supporters for Las Vegas’ Mountain Ridge, the opponent of Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West, were few and far between, but one played for the Cougars.

Right-hander Michael Wagner grew up in Las Vegas, living about 10 minutes away from where Mountain Ridge is based.

“It’s as close as you’re going to get,” Wagner said.

North boys soccer opens with road romp KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ROCKFORD – The St. Charles North boys soccer team broke open a close match with five goals in the second half Monday as the North Stars ripped Rockford East, 6-1, in their season opener.

North led the non-conference match, 1-0, at halftime.

David Gorniak scored two goals while Lorenzo Estrada, Chris Watson, Zach Morgando and Ryan Olson also scored for the North Stars.

“Obviously we were happy with the start [to the season] we got off to,” North coach Eric Willson said. “I thought offensively we did a lot of nice things but I think what probably stood out most to me was our intensity on the defensive end. We were pretty good with our defensive pressure, and that caused a lot of turnovers and led to some good goal-scoring opportunities for us.”

The match was originally supposed to be played in St. Charles but Willson said it was shifted to Rockford as field

Cougars stay hot; Johnson honored KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Kane County Cougars won for the 14th time in 15 games Monday, defeating the Burlington Bees, 8-3.

Yasiel Balaguert and Jeffrey Baez hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning as the Cougars (87-46 overall) bounced back from a loss Sunday that ended their franchise record 13-game winning streak.

“It’s just something special,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said after Saturday’s game. “Things have got to happen, and balls have got to fall your way and the ball has got to get hit at guys. It’s definitely pretty fun. It’s been a heck of a 13 games.”

Reliever James Pugliese was the winning pitcher Monday while Paul Blackburn pitched five innings of tworun ball. Jeimer Candelario had three hits while Jacob Rogers and Balaguert had two

hits apiece for the Cougars.

Johnson named MWL manager of the year: The Midwest League recognized Johnson as 2014 Midwest League Manager of the Year. Johnson has guided the Cougars to a record of 87-46 this season, the best mark among all Major League and Minor League Baseball teams.

The 2014 season has been full of high points for the Cougars, who are just three wins away from breaking the franchise mark for most regular season wins in franchise history. Entering play tonight, there are 8 games remaining.

Under Johnson’s guidance this season, the Cougars clinched the Western Division first half championship and will play in September’s Midwest League playoffs as the top seed in the Western Division.

“We came out of the loser’s bracket to fight all the way back and get to this championship game, and I couldn’t be more proud,” Butler said.

Jackie Robinson West’s run was a rarity for Chicago. It never had been united under one baseball banner, rooting for its own born and bred representing the city on a national stage.

“They felt the support,” Butler said.

“They heard the crowd.

“They fight all the time. It was a real good game, and it came all the way down to the end.”

Are unrealistic prospect expectations fading?

By ADAM KILGORE Washington Post Baseball may look back on 2014 as the year the prospect bubble expanded to its bursting point.

It took years to reach this point. Teams commodified the future, selling promise when they couldn’t sell success.

Fans, many of them driven by fantasy leagues, delved deeper into farm systems, digging for information and future stars.

Annual prospect rankings exploded in number, grew in popularity and sprouted midseason and post-draft updates.

The Next Big Thing became the only thing.

To a point, the cycle happened for good reason. Baseball’s salary structure makes young talent the cheapest and easiest to control. Prospects

add excitement to a tradition-steeped sport with a marathon season. They’re evolving lottery tickets. Teams once swapped high-ceiling minor leaguers for established veterans with disregard. As recently as 2007, the Orioles rebuilt themselves with one trade, sending Erik Bedard to Seattle for Adam Jones, Chris Tillman and other pieces.

What’s happened in the years since, though, is an over-correction and the formation of unrealistic expectations. In July, Sports Illustrated used its cover to label the Houston Astros, who have gone 216-398 since the start of 2011, as “”Your 2017 World Series Champs.” Prospect rankings had become a way not just to gauge progress, but to define success.

Teams have started swing-

ing the pendulum back closer to reality. In the offseason before the 2013 season, the Royals were savaged for trading prospects Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi to the Rays for James Shields and Wade Davis, a right-hander who swung between the Rays’ rotation and bullpen. It was framed as a smart organization robbing an old-fashioned one: Six years of future star Myers, plus the upside of Odorizzi, for two seasons of Shields and a spare part.

Look now. The Royals flirted with the playoffs last year, and this season they lead the American League Central.

Shields is their leader. Davis might be the best reliever in the American League. The Rays went to the playoffs last season as Myers won Rookie of the Year. Myers has struggled

through growing pains and injury this season, and the Rays are in third and currently out of the race, even as Odorizzi establishes himself as a solid starter.

Below the Rays in the AL East lies another cautionary tale for placing too much faith in prospects. After winning the World Series in 2013, the Red Sox plugged rookies Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley into their starting lineup.

Bogaerts is hitting .224 with a .627 OPS. When the Red Sox demoted Bradley recently, he was slugging – slugging – .290.

At the trade deadline this season, A’s General Manager Billy Beane traded his best prospect, shortstop Addison Russell, to land pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs. At the time, he called the present

an undervalued asset. Teams in his estimation had started hoarding prospects too much.

Of course, many high-rated prospects work out just as teams hope and analysts predict. Yasiel Puig rescued the Dodgers last season. Where would the Nationals be without Anthony Rendon? But that’s part of the point. No matter where they show up on a prospect list, young players succeed and fail for myriad reasons.

Veterans at least provide a track record to help predict their future success. Prospects can be scouted and tracked, but at the end of the day, they offer little more than hope.

That hope remains an extremely valuable commodity, as it should. But after 2014, the hype and expectation attached to prospect may dial back a bit.

The South Siders fell 8-4 to South Korea in the Little League World Series championship. Shortly after, they were reminded of what they had accomplished during their 11-day stay in South Williamsport.

Manager Darold Butler and the U.S. champs got a call from President Barack Obama.

“It was real cool and exciting because you’re meeting like the best person in the world, basically,” first baseman Trey Hondras said. “And to hear him talk to us and say, ‘Great job,’ it’s a real big thing.”

That’s really a big thing for us because we’re some champions.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Poison rings play a part in a lot of murder mysteries. Adversaries were removed with a flick of a ring cover over a glass of wine. The idea of a ring that held poison is thousands of years old, but it is the Victorian era that’s called “the era of the poison ring.” A ring was made to conceal a small compartment with a tight cover that could hold a poisonous powder. It was designed to be used to kill foes or to commit suicide if captured by enemies. But historians now think the rings were not often used to hold poison. Instead, the small compartment held religious relics, locks of hair of lovers, notes or other tiny memorabilia of a romantic or religious nature.

The poison ring is not out of fashion.

Internet ads offer hundreds of modern versions today. Prices range from under $40 for pewter or plated metal rings to thousands of dollars for gold rings set with precious stones. ** * Q: We purchased a stool in the 1970s while we were living in England.

It’s wood, 18 inches high, and has vertical fluted sections that join to make a circular outer case. When the top is raised, a hinged toilet seat appears. Under it is a compartment with a lidded ceramic potty jar. It also has a hinged slide-out footrest with a leather top.

There are no marks on the wood frame.

The lettering on the bottom of the jar reads, “Burleigh, Made in England.” We have no idea of its origin or history. Can you help?

A: You have a type of commode the English call a “close stool.” During the days before indoor plumbing, chamber pots with lids were usually kept under beds and used in the evenings when it was too dark or too difficult to go outside to an outhouse. The more well-todo 18th-century family could afford a close stool, a small decorative cabinet that held a chamber pot inside. It was chair-seat height and had an opening on top so the user could sit somewhat comfortably. Later close stools were made with hinged outer lids that could be lifted to access the chamber pot. By the 1870s, many had a toilet seat and a lid. A pull-out footrest made it easier for a child to use. Fancy close stools were designed to look like elegant pieces of furniture with stained woodwork and upholstered tops. With the advent of indoor plumbing, they were used as parlor stools or stands. Most were sold at wholesale prices to banks and insurance companies, which probably gave many of them away to new customers. While the banks are not very old, they appear to be relatively rare and are sought by an eager group of collectors.

This 18 carat gold ring with a hidden compartment has red enamel trim and an emerald set in the center. Advertised as a poison ring at a 2014 James Julia auction in Fairfield, Me., it sold for $1,185.

Q: We have a booklet called “Kellogg’s Funny Jungleland Moving Pictures.” The part of the cover with the title on it is orange and below that is a picture of an elephant and a giraffe dressed like people. The pages inside are illustrated with other animals dressed like people. They are cut into sections that can be moved to change the clothes the animals are wearing.

It’s marked “Copyright 1909 by W.K. Kellogg” and “Patented Jan. 15, 1907.”

The booklet is in pretty good shape other than a little hole in the fold of the book. What is it worth?

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Every year at this time for the past decade, I put my movie ducks in a row and make a wish list of what I’d like to see – for work and pleasure – at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s the biggest fest in North America that’s open to members of the film industry, the press and the public.

If you love movies, get yourself to the sprawling city of Toronto, where TIFF runs from Sept. 4-14. Among the 393 films being shown on 28 different screens, there are features, shorts, world premieres and a couple of old classics.

There’s also the chance of getting a glimpse of – or spending a chat session with – actors, directors, writers and producers from around the planet. TIFF is a world-class festival that runs the gamut of the movie-going experience. There will be films from major studios that will open in a few weeks but can be seen here first. There are independent features galore, some of which will open in theaters over the next few months, while others – even if they’re deemed terrific by some viewers – will go straight to disc or the stream, or never be heard from again.

In the years I’ve attended, I’ve had to see some films because interviews with filmmakers were set up in advance. But I’ve always made time to check out some titles I’ve never heard of, that I might not get to see on a big screen anywhere else.

I’ve only carved out enough time to be at TIFF for six days this year, and some interviews are already planned. For my “spare time,” I made an initial list of 61 films that looked promising, then, for reasons of maintaining sanity, carved that number down to 33. Well, even that ain’t gonna happen, but here’s a brief preview of the 15 that are calling out my name, and that I will make my priority.

“Bang Bang Baby” – a 1960s rock ’n’ roll-science fiction-horror-musical about a small-town girl whose singing ambitions are hampered when a chemical leak starts causing mutations among the population.

“Big Game” – Air Force One is shot down in the wilderness by terrorists, and a 13-year-old camper must rescue President Samuel L. Jackson.

“The Cobbler” – Tom McCarthy (“The Station Agent,” “The Visitor”) directs Adam Sandler in a fantasy about a shoe repairman who finds a magical object that puts him into other people’s lives (and shoes).

“The Drop” – Dennis Lehane adapted his short crime story “Animal Rescue” into this tale of a Brooklyn robbery gone wrong. With Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and the late James Gandolfini.

“The Face of an Angel” – Prolific Michael Winterbottom directs Daniel Bruhl and Kate Beckinsale as a journalist and a documentarian who are both working to figure out the same murder case.

“Foxcatcher” – The true story of wealthy John du Pont (Steve Carell), his involvement with Olympic gold med-

al wrestler brothers Dave and Mark Schultz (Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum), and a road to murder.

“Hector and the Search for Happiness” – Sometimes funny, mostly serious, this tells of a psychiatrist (Simon Pegg) who, unable to properly explain “happiness” to some of his patients, sets off on a journey to find out what it really is.

“A Little Chaos” – Alan Rickman directs and stars as Louis XIV, for whom a female landscaper (Kate Winslet) is hired to design the royal gardens at Versailles.

“Love & Mercy” – Paul Dano plays the young Brian Wilson; John Cusack plays the older Brian Wilson; and Paul Giamatti plays Dr. Eugene Landy, the controversial quack who played with the Beach Boy’s already messedup head.

“Maps to the Stars” – Emotional problems haunt a Hollywood family (as does a possible ghost) in David Cronenberg’s psychological study of the pursuit of celebrity and escape from the past.

“Men, Women and Children” – Director Jason Reitman looks at contemporary love lives in stories featuring high school teens and their

parents, and how social media has complicated and changed everything.

“Mr. Turner” – Timothy Spall won the coveted Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of the brilliant (and a bit crazy) British Landscape artist J.M.W. Turner. Directed

by Mike Leigh.

“Nightcrawler” – Busy screenwriter Dan Gilroy (“The Bourne Legacy,” “The Fall”) gets his first directing credit in this study of a freelance writer (Jake Gyllenhaal) who gets caught up in a nasty L.A. crime scene.

“Rosewater” – Remember when “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart took some time off a while back? It was to direct this film about a journalist who was imprisoned in Iran, partly due to an appearance he made on Stewart’s show.

“Tusk” – It’s Kevin Smith’s newest film. I’ve decided to print verbatim what it says on the Internet Movie Data Base: “A man is captured by a maniac and tortured, physically and mentally, into becoming a walrus.”

‘Advanced’ cholesterol testing can be useful for some Dear Doctor K: Should I request “advanced” cholesterol testing at my next checkup?

Dear Reader: A standard cholesterol test, or lipid profile, measures levels of HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. So-called “advanced” cholesterol testing is a more detailed version of this test. Cholesterol is a waxy, yellowish fat. It travels through your bloodstream in tiny, protein-covered particles called lipoproteins. These particles contain cholesterol and triglycerides, a type of fat.

The smallest and densest particles are high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Also known as “good” cholesterol, HDL removes cholesterol from artery walls.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles are known as “bad” cholesterol. They add cholesterol to the artery walls. There, it creates artery-clogging plaque that can trigger a heart attack or stroke. Most doctors use LDL levels to predict heart attack risk.

But many people with heart disease have LDL levels that aren’t especially high. It turns out that not all LDL particles are created equal. Larger, fluffier LDL particles may have a harder time getting into arteries. Smaller, more tightly packed LDL may have an

And a particular protein on LDL – apoB – further increases heart disease risk. Advanced cholesterol tests measure LDL sub-particles as well as apoB. My colleague Dr. Jorge Plutzky is director of the Lipid/Prevention Clinic and co-director of Preventive Cardiology at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He says that for the average person, the additional detail from advanced lipid testing isn’t critical. It wouldn’t change the treatment a doctor would have otherwise recommended. Why does he say that? Because there are plenty of new tests that have theoretical value in determining a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke. But they should be considered standard, generally recommended tests only if they actually make the prediction of risk more accurate.

For a new test to become standard, it needs to be used along with standard tests in thousands of people. Those people then are

followed for many years. Some will develop heart disease or have a stroke, and some will not. The standard tests, since they’ve already been proven, will do a good job. While they won’t be perfect, they will identify people who are more likely to develop disease.

But will the new test, when added to the standard tests, make that prediction even more accurate?

That’s what has to be shown for doctors to use the new test.

Dr. Plutzky thinks that advanced cholesterol testing might help to better understand heart disease risk in certain groups of people. These include people with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) without obvious risk factors (such as high blood pressure or diabetes); a history of CVD before age 55 in men or before age 65 in women; and a parent or sibling with early heart disease. Whatever you decide about the test, don’t forget triedand-true strategies for lowering heart disease risk. These include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight.

Dr. Wallace: I had a really bad year at school last year because two boys called me names and hit me every day.

They made me give them my lunch money every day and threatened to beat me up every day after school if I told anyone.

They said nobody would believe me if I told on them because they would say that I made it up. I hated going to school and I was happy when summer vacation was here.

But now I am just dreading when summer ends and I’ll be going back to school again.

What I can I do to get these guys to leave me alone? I read your column and I know you usually tell kids like me to fight back, but I can’t do that. Please tell me what to do when school starts. I’m even afraid to tell my parents about this. – Nameless, South Bend, Indiana Dear Nameless: You don’t necessarily need to fight back, but you must stop being afraid. As a former high school principal, I fully understand the terrible position these bullies have placed you in – your situation is shockingly common.

And it won’t stop until you take some action and get people on your side. Start by telling your parents what is happening at school and insist that they meet with the principal when school starts in the fall.

The principal has the authority to see that this form of brutality and extortion is eliminated immediately.

Suspension followed by a parent conference is the least these two bullies should receive.

The problem should be effectively handled by the principal, but if for

Have one of your parents call for an appointment.

Believe me, the buck stops there. I can assure you that the problem will be dealt with promptly and effectively.

I had good grades and wanted to start college in the fall, but my graduation class graduated without me and now I’ve since taken and passed the GED test and was given a high school diploma.

I don’t consider the GED diploma the same as a regular diploma and I’m wondering if it is accepted for college entrance. I still want to get a college degree so I can get a good job in the future. – Ricardo, Fullerton, California Dear Ricardo: Even a normal high school diploma is not a guarantee for college or university admission. But the General Equivalency Diploma is considered the equivalent of a high school diploma, and qualifies you for admission to a college or university if, after an interview and testing, you are found to have the academic ability to complete the school’s requirements.
