Fire causes damage to Elburn home; no injuries

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – No one was injured in a fire that caused significant damage early Monday morning to a house in Elburn.

Elburn firefighters were called to the 1100 block of Souders Avenue in the Blackberry Creek subdivision at 12:45 a.m.

When they arrived, they found the house’s attached garage on fire, according to Craig Hanson, assistant fire chief for the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District. One person who was inside the house was awakened by smoke detectors and was able to escape from the house before firefighters arrived, Hanson said. The fire spread through the second

floor of the house into the attic and caused significant damage to the house, Hanson said.

The resident is now staying with friends as the fire has left the house uninhabitable, Hanson said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.

Several other fire departments assisted Elburn firefighters in extinguishing the blaze, including Sugar Grove, Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles fire departments. In addition, Maple Park filled in at Elburn’s fire station, Hanson said.

Two cars parked in the driveway were damaged in the fire, he said. Two dogs and a pet rabbit were able to make it out of the house safely, Hanson said.

NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Police Department is investigating a report of an aggravated battery incident involving a senior citizen, which occurred Sunday morning near the village’s west side, according to a news release.

The department is seeking witnesses to the incident.

The alleged incident happened between 9:45 and 10 a.m. Sunday on top of a hill near State and Roberts streets, according to the release. The victim, a 74-yearold woman, was walking in the area when she was knocked to the ground by

She screamed, and the offender fled the area, heading north, according to the release. The victim was not injured during the incident.

The suspect is described as a dark-skinned man, about 18 to 20 years old, heavyset with a round face and short black hair, the release stated. He was wearing a red T-shirt with unknown writing and dark shorts, according to police.

Geneva park board votes to lose 1 racquetball court

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Park District board voted unanimously Monday to repurpose one of two racquetball courts so it could be used for additional fitness equipment, small group fitness classes and personal training opportunities.

More than two dozen racquetball players came to the meeting, with several speaking out in hopes of keeping the two courts. The board previously had delayed final action when the players objected.

“Four of us are in our 70s and I’m younger now than when I started – I played hand-

ball for 40 years,” said Alan Fulton of Batavia. “It’s a great way to keep in shape.”

“It’s a travesty,” James Nellis of Batavia said. “It won’t work to have three leagues and one court.”

But with usage at 21 percent in 2014, said Sheavoun Lambillotte, executive director of the park district, combined with a loss of revenue to maintain the courts, the staff and board chose to assess it for another use.

“Racquetball is not a viable option anymore, based on those numbers,” Lambillotte said. “We can meet our present needs with one court. Racquetball utilization is declining and

has been declining for a number of years. … The market has not supported racquetball.

If you look at the lack of other courts in the area, that has not increased usage in ours.”

By installing additional fitness equipment in one of the courts, Lambillotte said the district has an opportunity to get revenue and to respond to an expressed need by 1,300 Sunset Racquetball and Fitness Center members.

Lambillotte said one court would serve racquetball, handball and wallyball players, as well as adequately serve racquetball leagues during the highest months of use, in January, February and March.

Geneva D-304 approves 3-year teacher contract KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva District 304 school board approved a three-year contract with the teachers union Monday, according to a statement from the district. The Geneva Education Association ratified a three-year contract Thursday according to the statement. The two sides have been meeting since February.

Teachers will get a 1 percent increase in the base salary for the first two years, 2015-16 and

2016-17. For the 2015-16 school year, the beginning teacher salary will be $40,127, increased from $39,730. For the 2016-17 school year, the beginning teacher salary will be $40,529 increased from $40,127. The base salary in the 2017-18 school year is “to be determined” and will be tied to the economic indicator of the consumer price index, officials said.

board members will develop a new salary schedule or other salary formula to be used for the 2018-19 school year next summer. The new agreement will be posted on the district’s website, www.geneva304.org, by the end of the month.

St. Charles water main replacement project continues

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Fifth Avenue water main replacement project will require about five to six more weeks of work, city officials said Monday.

The project, which began in late April, has hit some delays, said John Lamb, the city’s environmental services manager. Lamb on Monday provided St. Charles aldermen with an update on the project during their Government Services Committee meeting.

The water main is being constructed on North Fifth Avenue, or Route 25, between North Avenue in St. Charles and the Q Center, 1405 N.

Fifth Ave. in St. Charles, Lamb said.

There were a number of water main breaks at the beginning of the project, and additional work is being required to clean and complete pipe flushing, Lamb said.

There has been more debris on site than expected, he said.

“There’s just been some complications when you’re doing underground work like this … even though everyone has done their homework,” he said.

The next five to six weeks will involve pressure testing and at least a week to repave the road, Lamb said.

The project is incurring additional costs, which city staff is addressing with the project engineer, Lamb said.

Happy hour in Illinois subject to strict regulations

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The return of the official happy hour in Illinois is starting to make its way back to the Tri-Cities.

A handful of businesses this month started offering drink specials during specific time windows, including FoxFire, 17 W. State St. in Geneva, as well as Valley Lodge Tavern, 109 W. Main St., and The Finery and Blacksmith Bar, 305 W. Main St., both in St. Charles.

The discount offerings are the result of Public Act 99-0046, which went into effect July 15 statewide. The changes permit happy hour under specific regulations that include a fourhour daily limit and a 15-hour weekly maximum.

Liquor licensees cannot hold a happy hour past 10 p.m. and also must give at least seven days notice of their drink discounts at their places of business or on their websites, according to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.

Before the law change, businesses could legally offer drink specials only if they were offered all day. Being able to choose a specific time period for drink specials already has helped The Finery and Blacksmith Bar, co-owner David Reyes said.

“I’d say three-quarters of the guests are partaking in the specials, and the other quarter are trying what else we have here,” Reyes said.

Reyes set his happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. daily, a time period where he said the business “literally couldn’t get anyone” through its doors.

Since the restaurant’s closing time varies between 9 and 11 p.m., having guests at the start of the business day for happy hour only adds to the bottom line, Reyes said.

Valley Lodge Tavern is taking a different approach, offering its happy hour from 8 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Friday, co-owner Bill Stavrou said. The evening hours were selected because Stavrou said he would like to see more business being generated.

Stavrou said it likely would take a month to determine whether the evening happy hour is successful. In the meantime, he is not concerned about patrons who might try to enjoy an excess of drinks during the promotion.

“We are diligent about making sure [over intoxication] doesn’t happen,” Stavrou said.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said he is confident in the abilities of the businesses and St. Charles police to ad-

dress any issues that might arise from happy hour. The St. Charles Liquor Control Commission on Aug. 17 recommended no changes for the state’s happy hour regulations to the St. Charles Government Operations Committee, which next meets Sept. 8.

“It’s sufficiently restrictive,” 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Payleitner said during the liquor commission meeting.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns last week sent a letter to liquor licensees indicating the city intends to formally adopt the state happy hour regulations within its city code, and businesses were free to adopt the state’s regulations effective immediately. Included with the letter was a list of frequently asked questions about the state’s happy hour changes.

Other area businesses plan to

review the state’s happy hour rules, but haven’t made any changes to their business models yet.

Michael Knuth, co-owner of EvenFlow Music & Spirits, 302 W. State St., Geneva, said he will talk to his bar manager and figure out how to roll out the promotion.

“We want to make sure we comply with everything they do. We’re just going to take it nice and easy,” Knuth said.

Michael Olesen, owner of Stockholm’s Brew Pub, 306 W. State St., Geneva, said he also will be looking at the law in detail. The former happy hour, which was banned in 1989, was designed to bring people in for a couple of drinks after work, Olesen said. The times and rules have changed since then, he said.

“I think this is all so brand new to everyone,” Olesen said.

“We’ll see where it may or may not be appropriate to utilize.”

Sadly, my summer internship with the Batavia Chamber of Commerce is coming to a close, but I am lucky enough to walk away from this knowing how valuable the past three months have truly been.

I have narrowed down the countless things I have been exposed to and learned this summer to a few of the most influential experiences of my time here.

Ribbon-cutting events:

Going to ribbon-cuttings every week opened my eyes to how important it is to have support and involvement within the community. Whether a business is new to town, celebrating an anniversary, reopening or whatever the case may be, having strong support from the community will take a business far. As we always say – shop local and

Networking and events: Being alongside chamber Executive Director Holly Deitchman throughout the summer at different events gave me a feel for the true value of networking. Not only have I realized how crucial getting your name and business out there is, but I also learned effective ways to communicate with professionals in specific situations.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District Board is expected to appoint a chief of operations at a special meeting tonight.

Board President Jim Gaffney said the individual will not replace Chief Greg Benson, who has assumed that role since 2011. Rather, he said, this person will concentrate on the district’s two stations and the operations at those stations.

The district is trying to “isolate the two positions to get certain things accomplished,” Gaffney said.

Gaffney declined to name the individual Monday but said he will be introduced at today’s meeting, which is set for 6:30 p.m. at Station 3, 34W500 Carl Lee Road, St. Charles Township.

The meeting will be brief, Gaffney said, estimating it will take less than an hour. The agenda includes the chief of operations’ appointment, introduction and contract approval.

Meetings: All summer

Holly involved me in every meeting she possibly could.

During some, I was there to observe and listen, while at others I was encouraged to participate. The meetings were overwhelming in the beginning, but as I would sit in more and more I was able to better understand the content of each meeting and become more comfortable. I experienced trials and errors, problem solving and celebrating the wins of different situations and events.

Interviews: As I previously have mentioned, I met with and interviewed a handful of local businesses and owners in Batavia. I cannot stress enough how valuable it was to speak to successful men and woman in our town. Being able to hear first-hand what

these employers look for and what they value is a huge advantage we are all capable of giving ourselves.

Professionalism: When Holly and I weren’t on the run going to meetings, interviews or events, we were working in the office. Making phone calls, planning, sorting out numbers and – most importantly – learning. I was in a work place atmosphere for the first time and was held to a professional standard that needed to be picked up on quickly.

The Batavia Chamber does amazing things for the town, and I am proud to say I spent my summer working here.

On top of that, I am absolutely proud to have had a boss like Holly. She made work fun, all while teaching and being a role model for me to look up to every day. No matter where

or what I found myself doing, I constantly was learning and improving as a person in the work place. Sitting in a classroom would have never been able to even scratch the surface of what I was taught and experienced at the chamber this summer. I was held accountable for tasks, pushed out of my comfort zone, and I am better now because of it. I know that because now I don’t get nauseous when Holly asks me to make phone calls!

Ex-Batavia resident convicted of child battery seeks new trial

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A former Batavia resident, who was convicted in July of aggravated battery to a child, is requesting a new trial.

Nicholas E. Glucksmann, 52, formerly of B a t a v i a a n d Nicholas E. most recently of Glucksmann Wheaton, was convicted July 8 by Kane County Circuit Judge John Barsanti of aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery to a child, all felonies.

Glucksmann’s sentencing

is set for Thursday, and he faces a minimum sentence of six years in prison. A hearing on a motion by Glucksmann’s attorney, Kane County Assistant Public Defender Eun Yoon, is set for Thursday.

In the motion, Yoon contended prosecutors did not present sufficient evidence to prove Glucksmann was the one who caused the injuries to the child. The motion also stated the court erred in finding there was sufficient circumstances to prove the child’s trauma was caused intentionally based on the nature and extent of the injuries.

Prosecutors had presented evidence that on the evening of April 16, 2011, Glucksmann and his girlfriend took an infant

that lived in their household to the emergency room after the child began to lose consciousness at their residence in the 300 block of South Batavia Avenue, Batavia, which Glucksmann and the girlfriend shared, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Emergency room doctors determined the child had suffered head injuries. They sent the child to a Chicago hospital and called police to report suspected child abuse, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

When interviewed by police, Glucksmann said the child fell off a bed and onto the floor. The child continues to recover from the injuries and is expected to live a normal life, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Forni remembered for devotion to Geneva community GENEVA – Don Forni, a lifelong Geneva resident who was known for his devotion to the community, died Friday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva after an illness, his family said.

Forni, 76, had worked for the Geneva Park District for 38 years. He served as superintendent of parks and properties until he retired in 2001. A park in Geneva was named for him.

He joined the Geneva Lions Club in 1981, serving as president and district governor, said

friend and fellow Lion Jay Moffat, who currently serves as a library trustee. In June, the Geneva Lions honored Forni with a Life Membership Award. He is one of 55,000 recipients.

“How fortunate we were as a club to make sure we recognized him in June and gave him the honor while he was alive,” Moffat said. “Don was such a great presence in the Lions Club. He did a lot for the community, a lot behind the scenes.”

“Don would give you the shirt off his back,” Persinger said. “He was amazing. And he worked very hard, one of the hardest-working people I knew.

He was a good person and a friend of mine. It’s a sad day.”

Don Forni’s wife of 55 years, Ann, said her husband was hospitalized Monday with severe health issues, stemming from the removal of a stone in his bile duct in January.

“It did a number on his heart and his kidneys,” Ann Forni said. “Each day, he got a little worse. I was holding his hand and he passed on. … It was very peaceful for him. He was ready to go. His only regret was, he hated to leave me.”

Ann Forni said she and her husband met while working part-time at a grocery store. He went to Geneva High School, and she went to St. Charles.

“On Saturdays, I would be cashier, and he would be my bagger,” Ann Forni said. “I really did not know the guy at the time. He came in to work wearing a black leather jacket and had his engineer boots on, and I told another cashier, ‘That is the guy I’m going to marry.’ ” Ann Forni said her husband was Catholic and she was Lutheran, but he changed to be Lu-

Donald L. “Don” Forni, age 76, of Geneva, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 23, 1938, in Geneva, the son of Leno and Catherine (Delaney) Forni.

Don worked for the Geneva Park District for 38 years retiring as Superintendent of Parks and was a member of MIPE, Midwest Institute of Park Executives. Earlier in his career he also worked for Jewel in Geneva and Diversey Foundry. He was a life member of the Geneva Lions’ Club serving as district governor as well as one of Santa’s helpers for many years. He loved to fish, do wood working projects, and spend time at his summer home on Lake Tomahawk, WI. During the winter months you would find Don in his jeep snow plowing for many residences and businesses in the area.

His greatest joy in life, however, was spending time with family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ann (Knutzen); children, Sue (Dave) Rasich of Geneva and Donald ( Renee) of Bloomingdale; grandsons, Dan and Joey Rasich; brother, Michael (Jody) of Geneva; and many dear nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and his step mother, Sylvia.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. Fifth Avenue, St. Charles with Pastor Mark Larson officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. Catherine M. Grzywa, age 86, of St. Charles, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at her home. She was born on Dec. 7, 1928, in Mauston, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gerald and Beatrice (Mason) Morrissey.

Catherine was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Lutheran Social Services at the Hotel Baker, and both the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.

She was also a member of the St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

Catherine is survived by her husband John “Jack” Grzywa, whom she married on Oct. 22, 1949, in St. Charles. Her children, Mary Ruotsi, Robert (Karon) Grzywa and Margie (Les Harris) Hearn; fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, John, Charles and an infant son, Thomas Grzywa; her sister, Eileen Johnson; and a brother, Gerald Morrissey.

WILSON HAL MOHR Born: Aug. 3, 1962 Died: Aug. 21, 2015

Wilson Hal Mohr, age 53, of Campton Hills passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 3, 1962, in East Orange, New Jersey to William and Ruth Mohr. He spent most of his youth in Nutley and Blairstown, New Jersey before moving to Illinois in 1988 Wilson worked for Motorola’s Cellular Infrastructure Group for a number of years as a Quality Engineer, where he was able to travel to countless locations around the globe.

He also worked for Baxter before joining EMNS in Downers Grove as an Operations Director where he spent the last 15 years of his career. Wilson loved boating, gourmet cooking, spending time with his wife and children in northern Minnesota and enjoying the company of his dogs and cats. He was a devoted family man who was known for his intelligence and sense of humor, and he will be greatly missed.

Mr. Mohr is survived by his wife of 26 years, Tracey; two children, Lauren and Spencer, both of Campton Hills; his mother and a brother, William, both of Barrington, New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A celebration of Wilson’s life will be held Wednesday, at 3:00 p.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills.

Stan was born Nov. 3, 1930, in Cavalier, ND to Alfred and Elizabeth (Laurie). His mother passed away when he was 4. Stan was the youngest of 7 children, growing up on a farm outside Cavalier. After graduation from Cavalier High School he served in the army as a photographer. He then graduated from North Dakota State University. He married his wife, Arlene (Gorum), in August 1955. They raised 7 children, having the notoriety of having 2 sets of twins born within 10 months of each other.

Then adding 3 more sons to the family each 2 years apart.

He spent his career in the Life Insurance industry, starting with sales and progressing to management and to an executive position with several different insurance companies. His jobs took his family from North Dakota to Minnesota to Ohio to Kansas and finally to Geneva, IL. He retired in 1995 but “consulted” up until a couple years ago. Due to health issues Stan and Arlene moved to an assisted living facility in Carmel, IN in May 2015.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Roy, Percy, Ray, Clayton; and sister, Kelly (Dunn); and step-brother, Jim; as well as 5 nephews.

Stan is survived by his wife, Arlene.

He passed away just a few days short of their 60th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by all 7 children, Kevin (Suzie), Kerry, Kendall (Dee), Kay Webb (Bill), Brad (Mary), Brian (Malia), and Blair (Audrey). Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; 4 nephews, 6 nieces, and numerous great nephews and nieces.

Stan and Arlene believed in creating strong family ties. They always made the extra effort to attend all family events regardless of how far away they lived. This was instilled on his immediate family by gathering the family every 2 years so that the grandchildren would know each other, this tradition continues today and will go on in his memory. He will always be remembered for being there when family needed him.

Lorraine Elizabeth Carroll (Baker), 86 years, of age passed away in St Charles, Illinois on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015. Lorraine was living under the care of Pineview Care Center in St Charles most recently.

Lorraine was born in Chicago on Nov. 10, 1928, to Celina Marie Baker (Jacques) and Joseph Leroy Baker.

Lorraine was the 4th of six siblings and spent most of her childhood in Dixon Illinois. After graduation from Dixon High School, Lorraine played baseball with a farm team of the Rockford Peaches. Sometimes timing can be cruel, she was a life-long Cubs fan.

After raising her three children Lorraine felt the call of the west. She became a “California gal” after living and working in Del Mar and Santa Barbara for over 25 years. Her career in property management gave her the beach lifestyle and her grandchildren loved to visit.

After retirement Lorraine returned to her Midwest roots and moved to Geneva. The real draw back to the Midwest was her grandchildren.

Living close to all three she enjoyed participating in their lives, sleepovers at Grandma’s were the best. Still not ready to fully retire she worked for the Little Traveler and the Geneva Park District where she made lasting friendships.

Lorraine was a devout Catholic and attended St Peters Church in Geneva, and seldom missed the opportunity to attend service. Lorraine was friendly and engaging and had a wide variety of friends. She always found time to be supportive and enjoyed entertaining.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Leroy Baker and Celina Marie Baker (Jacques); and brothers, Al, Ray and Frank Baker; and her beloved sister, Rosie Emmert.

Lorraine’s sister Patricia Frawley was very close to Lorraine and is living in Cayucos California.

Lorraine’s three children survive her, Susan Marie Warwick and husband Ed of Prescott Valley AZ, Charles Carroll and wife Judy of Geneva and Cathy Carroll of Tucson AZ. Additionally her grandchildren, Keith Gregory and his wife Julie of Streamwood, Kelly Crosier and her husband Clint of Chicago, and Brian Carroll of Chicago.

Housing crisis more complex than people paying too little rent THE WASHINGTON POST

Much has been made of a New York family paying $1,574 a month to live in public housing while earning $497,911 a year.

The case, which the inspector general for the Department of Housing and Urban Development unearthed, is as “egregious” as the watchdog said in a report.

Yet the real problem is not the relatively small number of tenants who earn more than they are allowed; it is the much larger number of people on the waiting list for housing.

The inspector general’s report revealed that more than 25,000 families living in public housing had annual incomes that exceeded HUD’s housing assistance eligibility level.

It highlighted a handful of other cases like the one in New York, where households with enough income to afford the market rate for a house or apartment live instead in subsidized units, leaving people who really need housing scrambling for a place to sleep.

Since the report’s release, HUD has switched course and vowed to evict more tenants.

The department’s initial reluctance was understandable in part. Most “over-income” tenants, the report found, were within $10,000 of the threshold – hardly able to make it in the market.

Kicking out a family newly on the upswing might send it spinning downward again.

There’s also a case to be made for income diversity in

housing developments. Developments where there is some mix of income are less vulnerable to crime, and those who have risen or are rising out of poverty can set an example for other residents.

But while evicting those who have just gone over the eligibility limit might not make sense, HUD should not turn a blind eye to all tenants who make more than the rules allow. Housing assistance wait lists in some cities are more than 100,000 people long. HUD could encourage above-threshold tenants to make room for needier applicants by telling all local authorities to raise rents based on income.

Some tenants – perhaps the best off – might leave.

Others would stick around, as long as the cost remained below market level.

Even that, however, is hardly an answer to the country’s public housing woes.

The 25,226 families the HUD inspector general found were above the income limit are only 2.6 percent of the total living in subsidized housing.

Many more are on wait lists for homes, and others are on wait lists for Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers that are just as long.

Affordable housing programs need more money to revamp old units, build new ones for mixed-income use and provide vouchers generous enough to get people out of bad neighborhoods and into better ones.

Otherwise, wait lists will not go down, and those on them will have no chance to make their way up.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reduce the load on taxpayers

To the Editor: In response to the letter published in the Kane Country Chronicle on Aug. 18, “Let’s raise our voices,” I am raising my voice.

Ms. Jones makes a good argument, but in my opinion her argument is specious. No matter how noble altruism is, the state of Illinois is broke.

We have become so invested in entitlements that we have seemingly completely forgotten how to be independent.

In their never-ending quest to remain in power, our political leaders have run our oncegreat state into ruin. They have promised and borrowed, and enhanced their position at the public trough by passing self-serving laws and amending the state constitution, to the point where their once-untenable actions are now law.

The battle in Springfield is about survival as a state, political positioning notwithstanding. The lack of a budget

and the unavailability of funds is nothing compared to the future time where there will be nothing left but debt.

Altruism is great if you can afford it, and, to the extent of real need, we can afford it. But the need has spilled over into dependency and glut, far beyond what is sustainable. Need has been created so that those providing it can remain in the catbird seat, adding further to their hold over their position.

We, as users of these services to the needy, have either enjoyed them as participants, or indulged them for our own profit. Now we must pay the piper, as it were, because we have gone far, far beyond sustainability. Illinois is broke; Illinois is shunned; and any possibility of recovery from

this swirling drainage is based on our ability to make drastic change. Part of that change will require the outlets of these services to cut back, and to cut back severely. Yet what we see are entities, such as that represented by Ms. Jones, making pleas which suggests it is not of their doing, but caused by others beyond their control.

I would suggest that, rather than plead and posture, that these entities who depend heavily on support from the state, would instead find ways to reduce their load on taxpayers. This, to me, seems far better than to, suddenly, but not surprisingly, find the doors closed for good.

With a good core group back this year, and tennis guru Sean Masoncup now in charge of both the girls and boys programs, the North Stars are poised for another strong season in the Upstate Eight Conference.

PLAYERS TO WATCH Geneva Losing three-time Chronicle Player of the Year Kirby Einck will be a tough hole to fill, but first-year coach Zach Evans thinks junior Grace Krueger will have no problem filling that spot, and has high hopes for several returning players this year. The team was Upstate Eight Conference and St. Charles East Sectional champions last season.

Batavia Coach Brad Nelson loses quite a few players from his team last year. The beginning of the season might be a struggle for some newcomers, especially on the doubles side of things, but Nelson is confident that with a few strong leaders back, the group will get the guidance to be where they need to by conference and postseason play.

Grace Krueger, Geneva, Jr. The two-time state qualifier returns and takes over the reins as the Vikings’ No. 1 singles player. Having had the tutelage from standout Kirby Einck for the past two years, Krueger thinks she has what it takes to get over the hump and win a few more matches at state this year.

Emily Hautzinger, St. Charles East, Sr. Hautzinger played No. 2 doubles last year and won the top singles spot in tryouts this year. Coach Matt Bulman talked about how hard Hautzinger hits the ball and believes she will be competitive in the area this season.

Julianne Robinson, Batavia, Jr. Robinson lost her doubles partner, Sydnee Unterberg, to graduation and will now move to No. 1 singles. She comes off winning the Upstate Eight Conference title as a sophomore, with Unterberg, at No. 1 doubles and will be the leader of the Bulldogs this year.

Olivia Gapuz, St. Charles East, Jr. Gapuz just missed out on being the Saints’ No. 1 singles player this year to Hautzinger. However, Gapuz still has the caliber of a top-flight singles player and won’t be an easy player for anyone to try and beat this season.

Maria Goheen, Rosary, Fr. Rosary coach John Tsang will have Goheen at his No. 1 singles spot as a freshman. He has high expectations for what he called “a very seasoned tournament player” as the Royals head into the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference for their first year.

New faces, same expectations Geneva coach Evans still holds high hopes for returning players

ENEVA – Zach Evans saw it coming, but he was still caught a bit offguard.

Maureen Weiler had been the girls tennis coach at Geneva since 2000 and had hinted to Evans she was going to retire at the end of last season, leaving him in charge of the

program.

Evans, who also is entering his second year coaching the Vikings’ boys tennis team, said it was a bit of a surprise to everyone, but he was put in a situation that he couldn’t and didn’t want to turn down.

“It was pretty interesting,” Evans said. “When [Maureen] decided to step down, it was more of, ‘Hey Zach, you’re taking over.’ I was like, ‘Oh,

OK. Cool.’ It’s pretty nice, though, because we have a strong lineup returning from last year, and I would say things have worked out pretty well for it being my first year taking over.”

Although the graduation of three-time Kane County Chronicle Girls Tennis Player of the Year Kirby Einck leaves no easy spot to fill, the Vikings feel they have the

perfect fit, who is more than up for the challenge.

Although somewhat overshadowed by Einck’s success, junior Grace Krueger will take over at No. 1 singles this season. Krueger has gone far from unnoticed, though, having qualified for the state tournament in each of her first two high school seasons.

Kamie O’Connor, St. Francis, Sr. O’Connor was overshadowed playing at No. 3 singles last season, but with the departure of state qualifier Ava Kolman and No. 2 singles player Shannon Donovan to graduation, O’Connor looks to take on a much bigger role for the Spartans this fall.

After falling short of state as a pair last year and finishing second in conference, Corda said the two have their eyes set on a state appearance in their final go-around at Geneva.

Sullivan suffered a wrist injury last year, which caused her to miss some time, but assuming they stay healthy, they look to be on of the stronger pairs in the area.

First-year Burlington Central girls golf coach Kyle Nelson routinely has channeled a decade of experience leading the school’s baseball program in his latest endeavor.

“There’s obviously a lot of differences,” Nelson said, “but both have that aspect of past failures affecting future performance. Especially in sports that are slower paced, maybe baseball or golf. If you hit a bad shot, you’ve got a couple hundred yards to walk to think about shots. So it’s really important with how you think and react.”

Nelson golfed and played baseball at Hinsdale South, so he enters the position with a pedigree far deeper than that of swing whisperer.

When program founder Deb Twenhafel retired from Kyle Nelson teaching and coaching at the end of the 201415 school year, he embraced the chance to add a fall coaching job. His wife and the couple’s three-year-old daughter, Grace, didn’t mind, either.

After consistently scoring in the mid- to upper 40s in ninehole rounds as a freshman, McCoy fired a 41 and 43, respectively, on the first two days of tryouts this month.

“She’s shooting lights out right now,” Kauffman said.

With a handful of other returners in the mix, including senior Emily Clark, the Bulldogs aim to challenge Upstate Eight Conference River Division heavyweight St. Charles North, led by junior standouts Gianna Furrie and Kate Lillie and an influx of skilled freshmen.

“I know St. Charles North has (some) girls that are probably going to be pretty darn good,” Kauffmann said, “but I think it’s going to be a close one for competing. It’s going to be fun. I’m looking forward to seeing what is going to be brought to the table.”

“They’re both very consistent,” Meyer said. “It’s rare when they shoot in the 80s (for 18 holes), and that’s very important to have two scores at the top. … You can almost pencil them in every time, and that’s huge for a team.”

Meyer also is enthused by the play of freshman Will Marshall, who familiarized himself with the program by attending Knights’ camps growing up.

“We knew that he was a solid player fundamentally,” Meyer said. “We didn’t know he had quite as much talent as he does, so that was a pleasant surprise in tryouts when he put up some nice scores.”

“She’s still working really hard on a lot of different things,” Evans said. “I have full expectations that she’s going to go to state again this year. Hopefully, she’ll make it a little further than last year, so it’s good for her to just keep improving. But she hasn’t let up at all over the summer which is good to see.”

But having a mentor like Einck over the past two years has not only made Krueger a better tennis player, but has put her in a place to take over the Geneva girls tennis program as a leader.

“It was really important for me to have her,” Krueger said of Einck. “She taught me

how to be a good leader and to include everybody. She was a great leader and helped me with a lot of the things that I’ve become successful with since I’ve gotten here.”

Krueger won’t be the only Geneva player moving up into a new role. Madi Corda and Maddie Krafcisin will move into the No. 1 doubles slot, having played one step down at No. 2 last season.

The senior pair took second at the Upstate Eight Conference tournament last year, falling to St. Charles North, but has only added to the motivation of having a strong senior year.

“Senior year goal is to always get to state, so we’d love that chance,” said Corda, who joins Krueger as the team’s two captains. “(Krafcisin and I) have worked on technique a bunch because most of the girls we know we’re going up against this year played at No. 1 doubles last year and already have that experience.

It definitely has amped things up for us, but we’re excited and know we can do it.”

will take Krueger’s spot at No. 2 singles, while freshman duo Taylor Hayes and Grace Hahn will move into the No. 2 doubles slot. Evans said the two have surprised quite a few people since practices have started.

Evans has also quickly adjusted to the difference of coaching the boys team.

He said he’s noticed one major difference that he said he thinks might make coaching the girls a bit easier at times.

“The intensity during the matches is much different,” Evans said. “I know that could be the case in girls versus boys sports, but in tennis, when you get angry, you usually play worse. So that works in the girls’ favor when they stay more calm, and it’s actually pretty nice.”

Expectations stay the same and high hopes certainly surround the Geneva tennis courts this season. With Evans coaching and experienced leaders like Krueger and Corda in tow, only time will tell how high the ceiling for this Vikings bunch will be.

A: The first color prints in the United States were made by Michael Miley (1841-1918). He and his son, Henry, filed an application for a patent on their process of producing color photographs on March 28, 1902. The patent was assigned to the Miley Colour Photograph Company of New York.

The process involved using plates and screens in red, green and violet to produce color. Only about 500 color prints were made by Miley. Children’s toys reflect the world of adults, so it is not surprising that sometimes a toy represents the political ideas of the parents and the children just think of it as a toy. George Brown, the famous toymaker from Connecticut, patented a suffragette toy in 1874, a few years after the first national organization seeking the vote for women was established in 1869. Women organized, protested and attempted to vote in the 1870s. They were arrested, but they gained publicity for their movement. When the Supreme Court ruled against them, they started a campaign at the state level for an amendment to the Constitution to give them the right to vote. It was not until Aug. 26, 1920, that women in the United States were given the right to vote. The George Brown toy has a bell, a large wheel and a woman dressed in clothes worn by suffragettes. It is a clever toy. As the wheel turns the bell rings and the woman’s legs move, so it looks as if she is pushing the wheel. The rare toy sold at a Bertoia auction in Vineland, N.J. for $6,000 in November 2014. *** Q: I have a mid-century piece of furniture. I’m not sure what to call it.

It’s made in two sections. The top is 42 inches high and has three shelves over two small drawers. The shelves have grooves that hold dishes upright. The bottom is 31 inches high by 52 inches wide, has three drawers over three doors and legs. One of the drawers is stamped “Morganton.” I was told I “really have something” because it is teak.

Is my furniture valuable?

A: Mid-century modern furniture was heavily influenced by Scandinavian designers and their pieces are selling for high prices. Scandinavian furniture, also called “Danish Modern,” features lightweight woods like teak or rosewood. You have a dining room buffet-china cabinet, made by Morganton Furniture Co. They have been in Morganton, N. C., since the 1940s, designing and manufacturing dining and bedroom furniture, and later, upholstered pieces. Your furniture is Danish Modern “style.” The spare, sleek look of mid-century furniture is enjoying a renaissance, and while your buffetchina cabinet wasn’t made in Denmark, it could sell for about $500 to someone furnishing a home. *** Q: I recently found ceramic figurines of Caroline and “John-John” Kennedy as children. John-John is modeled in his famous salute pose. They are 5 3/4 inches high and on the back of each is a green stamp that reads “Inarco Cleveland.” Do these have any value?

A: Inarco stands for International Artware Corporation, started in Cleveland, Ohio, by Irwin Garber in 1960. In the 1940s, Garber worked at NAPCO (National Potteries Corp.), a company near Cleveland that imported and distributed decorative accessories. Garber helped promote head vase planters, popular in the 1950s and ‘60s. He left NAPCO in 1960 to start his own giftware import firm. Your figurines are from 1963. A set sold in 2013, the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination, for $185. They can be found in online shops listed for about $40 to $100 for the pair, but selling for $25 to $50. *** Q: I bought a large, mechanical baby doll at a local auction. The doll lies in a

Dear Abby: As chairman of the American Institute of CPAs’ Tax Executive Committee, may I offer some clarification to you and your readers about your answer in your July 13 column titled, “Couple Deep in Tax Hole Need Help in Climbing Out”?

In fact, THREE groups of tax preparers have unlimited practice rights under Department of the Treasury regulations to represent their clients on any matters before the IRS – certified public accountants, attorneys and enrolled agents.

None are more qualified than CPAs. CPAs are licensed by state regulators and must meet minimum education requirements to sit for their national licensing exam and then fulfill ongoing continuing education requirements, as well as abide by a code of professional ethics. Attorneys have a generally similar system.

Enrolled agents are often former IRS employees who are licensed by the IRS after passing an exam. Enrolled agents are competent and respected tax professionals, but the fact they are licensed by the IRS does not mean they are better qualified in serving clients than are CPAs or attorneys.

Hybrid surgery involves both bypass and angioplasty Dear Doctor K: My friend said he had bypass surgery and angioplasty at the same time. Isn’t it usually one or the other?

Dear Reader: It is usually one or the other, but your friend may have been treated at one of a few select medical centers in the United States currently offering a new hybrid approach. If so, he may have had both bypass surgery and angioplasty during the same surgery.

To answer your question, I need to explain both the traditional approach and then the new hybrid approach. The hybrid approach cannot be used in all patients. However, when it is used, the goal is to make the surgery less grueling, and the beneficial results of surgery more long-lasting.

Lifestyle changes and treatment with medicines are often all that someone with atherosclerosis of the arteries of the heart needs. But when fatty plaque narrows the arteries of the heart and threatens its blood supply, it’s crucial to restore blood flow.

One option is to open the blockages with a tiny balloon (angioplasty). This is followed by the placement of a stent – a tiny, expandable mesh tube that keeps the artery open.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Another option is to transplant blood vessels from elsewhere in your body to bypass the blockage.

The blood vessels are used to route the blood past the blockage, restoring blood flow to the heart.

This is known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

When it was first introduced, and as it still is often performed today, CABG has several features: • The surgeon saws through the breastbone to access the heart.

That’s pretty grueling, and it injures a lot of body tissue, which requires a long period of healing.

• Then the beating of the heart is stopped, so that it is not moving when the surgeon does the delicate operation. But if it’s not beating, the heart can’t do its job of pumping blood throughout the body. Instead, the patient is put on a heart-lung machine to pump the blood while the heart is stopped. The use of the machine sometimes can cause complications.

• The traditional CABG technique also uses veins from the legs to route blood past the

blockage.

Over the years, surgeons have been refining various techniques for making the surgery “smaller.” These changes collectively are called “minimally invasive surgery.” In such surgery: • Surgeons do not cut through the breastbone. Instead, they make much smaller incisions through the chest. They use tiny scopes that let them see inside the chest, and instruments (including robots) that allow them to do precise surgery on the blood vessels of a beating heart.

• Because surgeons leave the heart beating, they don’t need to use a heart-lung machine.

• Another change in CABG over the years has been that surgeons use arteries from other parts of the body – arteries the body can “spare” – because they last longer than veins.

With this background on angioplasty and the traditional approach to CABG, in tomorrow’s column I’ll explain the newer approach of hybrid surgery that you asked about.

Former teacher shares how to select high school cheerleaders Dr. Wallace: With the beginning of another school year approaching, I’d like to share a great solution for the difficult job of selecting cheerleaders.

When I was a spirit squad adviser at a high school, every spring we had tryouts for the following school year’s cheerleaders.

All candidates performed at an after-school tryout. We charged adults $1 and students 50 cents to be spectators, thereby raising money for the support of our program.

Eight judges were present to rate the candidates – two parents, two teachers, two student body officers and two members of the Spirit Association.

The students then had to perform two cheers – one as a solo and one with a group of three. This required the students to create a cheer or song routine on their own, and then also perform a cheer that was taught to them.

After everyone finished their performances, we cleared the gym while the judges tabulated their scores.

I realize that this takes time to organize, but it’s fair to the students and the school.

Here are some things that college admissions personnel look for: • Academic performance.

First and foremost, college counselors look at your high school record.

Did you take a challenging course load? Did you participate in extracurricular activities?

• Standardized tests. Test scores provide a quick snapshot of a student’s academic aptitude and help schools differentiate among thousands of candidates. Many people feel that these tests are biased against women and minorities (and only test the ability to take tests), but nevertheless, they’re required by some schools.

• The essay. Colleges often want an imaginative, interesting and well-written essay that reveals a student’s character, personality and motivations.

• The personal interview. It may seem nerve-wracking, but the interview is really like a relaxed conversation and can make you more than a name on an application.

• Recommendations. Get them from teachers (and employers) who have seen your best work and know your potential.

In the former, you have only a 50 percent chance of winning; but in the latter, it is 100 percent if you can draw trumps, keeping at least one in the dummy and your hand, eliminate the cards in two side suits, and give an opponent the lead when he has to help you.

Here is another example. How should South play in six hearts after West leads the spade queen?

Yes, a diamond lead is fatal to the contract. East should have doubled the four-diamond control-bid.
