Music Matters moves into former school in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The former Louise White School has a new life as a school of music.

In June, Music Matters School of Music moved into the 1893 building, located at 24 N. Washington Ave. in downtown Batavia. Music Matters previously had been on Wilson Street in downtown Batavia for eight years.

“We thought it would be great to be inside a house of education,” said Jeff Matter, the Music Matters director and a lifelong Batavia resident, during Saturday’s open house. “It’s been a labor of love to bring this building back to one we could all enjoy.”

As it so happens, Matter was celebrating his 36th birthday Saturday.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday,” he said.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke took note of the building’s history. Schielke went to school in the building and is a cousin of White, who taught in the Batavia school system for 10 years.

“Thank you for preserving a major part of Batavia history,” Schielke said, in addressing Jeff Matter and his father, Cyril Matter, CEO of Barco Products, which also moved into the building.

The new space is bigger than Music Matters’ former

location, which will give the school the space to offer additional programs, such as theater classes for grades kindergarten through high school.

“It’s something that I always wanted to have,” Jeff Matter said. “There is a real

need for this type of instruction.”

Carrie Schafer, who previously had been teaching acting classes out of her Batavia home, is the new acting director at Music Matters. She said she is glad to see Music Matters expanding its reach.

‘Wonka’ cast takes last bow in Batavia

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For at least one 11-year-old Sugar Grove boy this summer, the script of “Willy Wonka Jr.” was bedtime reading.

And for good reason: Rob Luedtke had secured the part of Mike Teavee in the Avenue J Studios production, which ended a four-show run Sunday at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre.

Soon after the cast of 5- to 17-year-olds took their final bow downstage, the kids rushed to the lobby, where their family awaited, some with bouquets of flowers and

other congratulatory items.

The TV-obsessed character of Mike Teavee was Rob’s first theatrical role, and reading the script before he went to bed helped him learn his lines, he said.

Rehearsals for the musical began in June and were generally held multiple days a week so the cast could focus on various aspects, such as the blocking, music and choreography, said Jennifer Madziarczyk, managing director of Elburn-based Avenue J Studios.

Because so many children auditioned, she said, they were split into two casts who performed two shows each.

Rob said he prepped for his

role by watching both film versions of the Roald Dahl story and described his involvement with the play as “super fun.”

“I made a ton of friends,” he said.

Onstage, Rob’s Mike Teavee joined the other golden ticket holders – Charlie Bucket, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde and Augustus Gloop – in a tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

Although the Batavia Fine Arts Centre had plenty of room for the cast – at one point during Wonka’s tour they even walked through the audience – Madziarczyk said their rehearsal space wasn’t as spacious.

The 850-square-foot space for the cast of its size was, she said, “quite challenging.”

Avenue J Studios is planning a move to North Aurora, Madziarczyk said. She said the target date is Oct. 1.

The youth theater is working on another production in time for Halloween, “You Ain’t Nothin’ But A Werewolf.” Auditions have passed, but Madziarczyk said there is still time for children to get involved, whether in an onstage or behind-the-scenes role.

It will feature at least one stage veteran – Rob, who when asked if he would want to continue acting in plays, said, “Yeah, yeah totally.”

“I think it is a good thing for Batavia in general,” Schafer said. “It will get a lot more talented kids involved.”

BATAVIA – Even though Daddio’s Diner owner Scott Beltran knew that Daddio’s employee James Wolff was about to dump a bucket of ice cold water over his head, it still came as a surprise.

“It’s just shocking,” Beltran said. “It’s for a good cause, though.”

Beltran on Saturday participated in the ALS Association’s Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money for ALS research, as well as awareness about the disease. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive, degenerative disease of the nervous system.

He said that having a bucket of ice bucket water dumped over his head was a good way to cool off as the late summer heat continues.

“I picked a good day to do

it,” Beltran said.

The popularity of the Ice Bucket Challenge is shown through the increase in donations to The ALS Association. Through Saturday, The ALS Association has received $70.2 million in donations, compared to $2.5 million during the same time period last year, according to the ALS Association.

For Beltran and his family, the issue is personal.

“My brother’s best friend died 10 years ago from ALS,” said Beltran’s wife, Terry Beltran. “Growing up, he was like my brother. He was very close to me.”

As he participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge, Scott Beltran nominated Batavia Enterprises vice president Austin Dempsey, Enticing Cuisine owner Jason Stoffels and El Taco Grande owner Carlos Martinez to also accept the challenge.

Cougars make it a baker’s dozen

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Several dozen Cougars fans bookended their Saturday nights with big cheers.

The support started with the earlybirds taking their seats as Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West earned the final outs of the U.S. Little League championship.

A few hours later, a much bigger crowd hailed something it saw with its own eyes instead of on a video board. The Cougars extended their winning streak to a season-high 13 games by beating Clinton, 2-1.

In between, perhaps just a few folks felt anything but extended elation. Cougars reliever Michael Wagner, for one, appreciated the pick-meup after admittedly pulling for JRW’s opponent from his hometown of Las Vegas, a Mountain Ridge program he opposed as a child.

“Yeah, I was reppin’ it hard until the the last out,” Wagner

said. “What are you going to do? It’s baseball, right?”

Repeat that last part as consolation to the LumberKings.

Clinton (56-73 overall, 26-35 second half) squandered early opportunities to score more than just one run through five innings, then watched the Cougars ignite their attack yet again.

A few milestones moved into closer view as a result.

The Cougars stands two victories from tying the single-season franchise record for wins.

With four more consecutive wins, they’d match the longest streak in Midwest League history.

Owners of the best record in minor league baseball at 86-45 (41-20 second half), the Cougars took the lead on right fielder Jeffrey Baez’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top half, a play emblematic of the streak and arguably the season occurred when Cougars second baseman Danny Lockhart erased Clinton’s Aaron Barbosa with

a throw to the plate. One pitch earlier, Cougars manager Mark Johnson departed the dugout to argue the call that Barbosa had stolen third base safely.

“That was definitely a great pitch to kind of give us a chance on the ground, you know,” Lockhart said. “The play worked out good. They were running contact, so it was nice to be able to get that out, kind of keep the game in our favor. It also shifted the momentum right there.”

Cael Brockmeyer started behind the plate for the third straight game as recent acquisition Victor Caratini nurses a tight quad.

Will Remillard (elbow inflammation) is on the disabled list and rehabbing at home in New York before rejoining the parent Cubs organization next month for fall instructional league play.

Ben Carhart, another member of the catching rotation, recently earned a promotion to Advanced-A Daytona. Mark Zagunis is expected to start

behind the plate Sunday.

“It’s been one of those years with the catchers, you know,” said Johnson, who played the position for parts of eight seasons in the major leagues. “It’s been kind of good kind of moving guys in and out, and nobody’s getting real tired or anything. So this is a little challenge for Brock, especially late in the season.

He’s a strong kid, but he does a good job running the game and he handles the staff really well.”

With the Cougars outscoring opponents, 74-25, during the streak, pitchers certainly have done their part. On Saturday, righty Ben Wells took his turn with six innings of six-hit, one-run ball.

Although he recorded only five groundball outs among his 18, Wells lauded his sinker plenty. In addition to the key fifth-inning groundout, it helped him induce an inning-ending double play in the fourth.

A seventh-round pick of the Cubs in 2010 who joined

the team from Advanced-A Boise last month, Wells is accustomed to relying on the pitch.

“That’s what I’ve been doing lately. My sinker’s been moving well, been controlling it, keeping it down in the zone,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of quick outs with it, especially earlier in the count, try to go with as much early contact as I can.”

Clinton out-hit the Cougars, 7-5. Brockmeyer’s fifth inning double and Baez’s homer were the Cougars’ lone extra-base hits.

Wagner (two innings) and Francisco Carrillo (one) spaced one hit and six strikeouts in sterling relief, setting the scene for a pleasant bus ride.

With a matinee in Burlington Sunday, the Cougars – 53-15 at home with 10 sweeps – traveled after the game, looking to keep their roll afloat on the road.

“Grab a shower, get something to eat and head to the hotel,” Wells said.

For Thursday’s preseason finale in Cleveland, expect Fales to take a majority of the snaps.

Ford was expected to be in the running for the No. 2 running back position during the offseason, but he quickly fell down the depth chart in training camp. He did not play a snap in Friday’s preseason loss in Seattle and had five carries for 15 yards in the previous two games.

The Bears gave Ford a chance on two kickoff returns, which he returned for a total of 49 yards. Clearly the team feels comfortable with running backs Shaun Draughn and Ka’Deem Carey, and has enough on special teams to replace Ford, who appeared in 12 games on special teams last season, when he was an undrafted rookie.

Collins had a great 2013 preseason and was coming on strong when he replaced Henry Melton, but tore his ACL. He re-signed, and the Bears had high hopes for him, but with rookies Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton in the fold, Collins had not done enough to crack the second team. He played only six snaps against the Seahawks and did not record a tackle in three preseason games.

The South Siders lost to South Korea, 8-4, in the Little League World Series Championship. Shortly after, they were reminded of exactly what they had accomplished. Not just Sunday, but over their 11day stretch in South Williamsport.

Manager Darold Butler and the Little League national champs got a call from President Barack Obama. It takes some doing to get a call from the most powerful man in the world.

“It was real cool and exciting because you’re meeting

like the best person in the world, basically,” first baseman Trey Hondras said. “And to hear him talk to us and say, ‘Great job,’ it’s a real big thing.”

Exactly how important has this Little League team become?

They couldn’t take their first call from the president’s assistant.

The team was just walking onto the SportsCenter set after Sunday’s game. The president had to wait because the nation wanted to hear from the 13 South Siders.

“We were going on stage right then, going live on ESPN and his assistant asked was it a good time and I said, ‘We’re going live now,’ ” Butler said.

“I’m still shocked by everything. This whole journey has been a big shock for me.

I couldn’t ask for anything more. I hung out with the best coaches, the best kids you could be around.”

Jackie Robinson West started out playing for its community. Then its state. Its region later. And Sunday, its country.

That was evident as chants of “USA” rained down on these inspirational boys as they tried to furiously rally.

The team rewarded the estimated crowd of 28,671 with the same never-quit attitude that helped it stave off elimination three straight games to even get to Saturday’s U.S. Championship.

Down seven runs heading into the sixth and final inning, Jackie Robinson West was able to score three times. The game-tying run was on deck when the team made the final out.

“We came out the loser’s bracket to fight all the way back and get to this championship game, and I couldn’t be more proud,” Butler said.

The Jackie Robinson West run was such a rarity for the city.

Jimmy Clausen has won the competition to be Jay Cutler’s backup quarterback.

The Bears released Jordan Palmer on Sunday, handing the reins of the No. 2 role to Clausen, the former second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers.

The Bears parted ways with 12 players, getting their roster down to 78.

Most notably, the Bears waived running back Michael Ford and terminated the contracts of vested veterans Nate Collins and Adrian Wilson. The Bears also released return man Darius Reynaud and linebacker Jordan Senn.

Palmer completed 21 of 30 passes for 225 yards, one touchdown and one interception in three preseason games, good for a passer rating of 88.9. The offense did have two delayof-game penalties when Palmer was with the second team in Seattle.

Clausen has completed 24 of 37 passes for 280 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His passer rating this preseason is 94.4.

“Coach Trest didn’t want players to make predictions about this year.

As a former Bear, I can say that I believe this is a [Super Bowl] team [with] an MVP QB,” Palmer wrote on his Twitter. “I’ll be wearing Bears gear and supporting the Bears for the rest of my life,” he added. “Regardless of what happens. This is the best [organization] in the NFL.” Palmer, 30, joined the Bears last preseason and played well in the finale. He re-signed with the team in the season after Cutler’s injury, and then again this past offseason.

He seemed primed to be the No. 2 quarterback before the Bears signed Clausen during minicamp.

The competition in Bourbonnais allowed Palmer to have the first shot, but although the stats were close in the preseason, Clausen was the better passer, with a stronger arm and more upside. Palmer knew the offense and had the respect of the locker room, but Clausen has gotten a grasp of the offense now, too.

Rookie David Fales remains a possibility to make the team as a No. 3 quarterback, or join the practice squad, if the Bears choose to risk subjecting him to waivers.

Here is the difficult part: This will still be my biological grandchild.

When this beautiful child is lovingly handed over to the adoptive parents, I will be losing a grandchild. I am already in mourning.
