St. Charles man receives state arts council award

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man and a Yorkville woman have once again been named recipients of a state arts honor, according to a news release.

Bill Robinson and Katie Moritz were among the recipients of the Illinois Arts Council Agency’s 2015 Ethnic and Folk Arts Master Apprentice Program awards, the release states.

Robinson was one of 10 master artists who received a $3,000 award to instruct their chosen apprentices in their art form through intensive one-on-one sessions, according to the release.

Robinson plays the hammered dulcimer, which is described on his website as “a trapezoidal instrument in which strings are stretched across and then struck with small hammers to generate

This year marks the third time that Moritz has been paired with Robinson for the award.

“It’s a huge honor – I think it’s just a great way to allow people to learn these folks arts,” Moritz said in a phone interview. “Some of them would die

out if people couldn’t afford to learn them.”

Robinson, 71, has played the hammered dulcimer for 60 years. He said the dulcimer creates pleasant music and is something that everybody enjoys.

“I really like when people stick with [the dulcimer],” Robinson said in a separate phone interview. “Whether they are out performing or out teaching, you’ve go to pass it on.”

The Master Apprentice program recognizes the need for structured opportunities to pass on traditional and classical ethnic arts as part of the preservation of Illinois’ cultural heritage, the release states.

Traditional ethnic and folk arts eligible for support include those artistic practices which have a community or family base, express that community’s aesthetic, heritage and tradition, and have endured through

several generations, according to the release.

The art forms are expressions of the particular culture of the regional, national, ethnic, tribal, or language group from which they originate, the release states.

“Illinois is exceptionally rich in cultural heritage,” Shirley R. Madigan, chair of the Illinois Arts Council Agency, wrote in the release. “Ethnic and Folk Arts Master/Apprentice Grants help to foster this learning arrangement and sustain the diversity of these traditional art forms.”

The program generally supports art forms found in informal rather than institutional settings. A master artist is an individual recognized within his or her community as an exemplary practitioner of his or her traditional or classical ethnic art form, according to the release.

Forni remembered for devotion to Geneva community GENEVA – Don Forni, a lifelong Geneva resident who was known for his devotion to the community, died Friday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva after an illness, his family said.

Forni, 76, had worked for the Geneva Park District for 38 years. He served as superintendent of parks and properties until he retired in 2001. A park in Geneva was named for him.

He joined the Geneva Lions Club in 1981, serving as president and district governor, said friend and fellow Lion Jay Moffat, who currently serves as a library trustee.

In June, the Geneva Lions honored Forni with a Life Membership Award. He is one of 55,000 recipients. In presenting the award, Lion Lee Perington said Forni portrayed Santa for the club’s annual Breakfast with Santa event.

“Now, you can’t imagine how hot it is in the Santa Claus suit, sitting in that thing for five or six hours over there at the high school gymnasium and having these kids jumping on and off your lap,” Perington said.

“This is the kind of guy we’re talking about,” Perington said at the time. “This guy has a

“How fortunate we were as a club to make sure we recognized him in June and gave him the honor while he alive,” Moffat said. “Don was such a great presence in the Lions Club. He did a lot for the community, a lot behind the scenes.”

Stephen Persinger, a retired park district executive director, said he not only worked with Forni for years, but they became friends.

“Don would give you the shirt off his back,” Persinger said. “He was amazing. And he worked very hard, one of the hardest-working people I knew.

He was a good person and a friend of mine. It’s a sad day.”

“I had the good fortune and honor of working with Don Forni for a few years before he retired, and you could not have asked for a finer gentleman to work with,” Geneva Parka District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte said.

Don Forni’s wife of 55 years, Ann, said her husband was hospitalized Monday with severe health issues, stemming from the removal of a stone in his bile duct in January.

“It did a number on his heart and his kidneys,” Ann Forni said. “Each day, he got a little worse. I was holding his hand and he passed on. … It was very peaceful for him. He was ready

to go. His only regret was, he hated to leave me.”

Ann Forni said she and her husband met while working part time at a grocery store. He went to Geneva High School, and she went to St. Charles.

“On Saturdays, I would be cashier, and he would be my bagger,” Ann Forni said. “I really did not know the guy at the time. He came in to work wearing a black leather jacket and had his engineer boots on, and I told another cashier, ‘That is the guy I’m going to marry.’ ” Ann Forni said her husband was Catholic and she was Lutheran, but he changed to be

Lutheran for her when their son and daughter were going to confirmation and Sunday school.

“He was just wonderful,” Ann Forni said. “I could not have asked for a better person.”

The visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St., Geneva. The visitation will continue at 10 a.m. until the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the Geneva Lions Club, Box 382, Geneva, IL 60134.

BATAVIA – “I only like dragonflies,” said Dominic, 6, of North Aurora as he hurried off to follow the activities Saturday at Bugfest, sponsored by the Fox Valley Park District at Lippold and Red Oak parks in Batavia.

His aunt, Jeanne Ranson of North Aurora, said she brought him to enjoy the day outside and learn more about nature.

“He loves bugs,” Ranson said as Dominic walked ahead to an ant activity. “First of all, he loves Red Oak Nature Center, and we love walking around down here, anyway.”

“It’s like at the nature center, we have Madagascar hissing cockroaches that people are terrified of,” Roberts added. “Once you pull them out and you let people handle them and learn about them and how they factor into the natural world, they realize they’re not terrified of them anymore. And when they leave, they leave educated, and they’ve had a good time.”

Using the same scoring system, Pro Football Focus ranked Fuller second-to-last among the 70 cornerbacks who played half their team’s snaps last year. This preseason, PFF ranks him 260th out of 263 cornerbacks to appear in a game.

He’s better than that, of course – Fuller led all rookies with four interceptions and three forced fumbles last year – and should fit Vic Fangio’s more aggressive coverage scheme.

“They’re going to have to play some 1-on-1 coverage sometimes, and they’ve got to

be able to stand up and handle the hard downs,” Fangio said during training camp in Bourbonnais. “Hopefully, we think, but hopefully we’re right, that we think he can do that.”

The Bears have surrounded the 6-foot, 194-pounder with veterans, bringing in cornerbacks Alan Ball and Tracy Porter to mentor him, as well as safety Antrel Rolle.

It’s a good fit for Fuller, who, as the third of four brothers, is used to having a give-and-take relationship with older siblings.

Fuller has been impressed with what the veterans have been able to share.

“Those are the guys you’re out on the field with and have gone through what you’re going through,” Fuller said.

“They help you out a lot.”

Bears’ Langford provides solid backup ajahns@suntime.com INDIANAPOLIS – Rookie running back Jeremy Langford thought he had it. With a cutback and a nifty move on a closing safety, he felt the end zone. He saw daylight.

And then Langford started to stumble over his own feet.

“I did get a hard time [from my teammates], but it’s something I’ve got to get better at,” Langford said. “I thought I had a touchdown. I should have scored. When I see it on film, I’ll think the same thing.”

Instead of a 63-yard touchdown run against the Colts, Langford was dragged down for a 46-yard gain. But on that play, he showed just about everything that general manager Ryan Pace values about him: vision, burst and breakaway speed.

For a team that plans to commit to the run under coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase, it was a welcome sight. Langford looks poised to become the first running back to truly spell starter Matt Forte since 2012.

“Good effort,” Fox said of Langford’s nine carries for 80 yards against the Colts. “He’s a fast guy – a good guy, obviously, we thought enough of to draft. He has good vision and he’s getting used to the pro game, but I like where he is right now.”

The Bears won’t be enacting a true two-back system.

Forte still remains the unrivaled starter. But Langford and Jacquizz Rodgers will be worked in.

The Denver Broncos’ use of Montee Ball in 2013 could be a template for Langford’s activity this season. Ball, like Langford, was a rookie that season, and he received 120 carries in 16 games behind starter Knowshon Moreno, who had 241.

Ball’s carries that season were more than any reserve running back who has been behind Forte since he joined the Bears in 2008. Marion Barber and Michael Bush each had 114 rushing attempts in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

The Bears’ commitment to the run has been evident over the first two exhibition games.

They’ve run the ball 69 times for 331 yards. Last year, the Bears had 171 rushing yards in their first two preseason games.

“It felt good to be successful,” said Langford, who also scoredona2-yard,change-of-direction run in the third quarter. “I felt the offensive line did a great job blocking up front, and we did a nice job Jeremy making plays.”

Langford Langford said he’s grown comfortable with the Bears’ diverse running game, including the zone blocking. Cutbacks will be a staple of the Bears’ attack, and Langford considers such runs a strength for him.

Forte is in a contract year, but he can’t help but be impressed by the fourth-round pick out of Michigan State.

Langford, who played on all four special team units against the Colts, has flashed more than Ka’Deem Carey, a fourthround pick last year.

“He’s grown very well,”

Forte said of Langford. “He had a nice run, was really patient and set up the safety real well (on the 46-yard run). He was able to break the tackle and get a long run.

“He’s come along nicely.

That’s what we’ve been trying to do, establish that run and help the quarterbacks.”

It will be interesting to see how Gase’s game plans work with Langford behind Forte.

Langford was a workhorse for the Spartans, totaling 568 carries, 2,944 yards and 40 touchdowns over the last two seasons.

But, as coaches always say, it’s a good problem to have.

“He’s versatile,” Forte said.

“He can catch the ball out of the backfield. He’s got the speed and agility to make guys miss. He’s what you need as a running back.”

We didn’t need a reminder, at this point, but we got one Saturday night anyway, when Kyle Fuller gave up a 45-yard post pass and was called for taunting: it’s time to tamp down the expectations for the Bears cornerback.

His preseason struggles – against Alshon Jeffery and the Colts’ T.Y. Hilton and others –might not be a harbinger of struggle this season. But let them be, at least, a reality check.

Shutdown corner? Slow down.

Bears coach John Fox, for one, has shied from that notion when asked about Fuller.

He loves his skills and work ethic, but stresses that lock-down corners are rare in

Dear Abby: I’m nearly 100 percent sure my husband is cheating on me.

I tracked him a couple of times using the GPS on his phone and saw he wasn’t where he told me he would be. I know he has a female acquaintance who lives in the general area of where he was, so I did a little investigating.

Sure enough, she lives exactly where he was. I don’t know whether to confront him now, or wait to try to catch him at her house so there will be no denying it.

My husband is the last person on Earth I thought would cheat. When it comes to everything else in life, he’s a man of high standards and integrity.

I’m afraid to be on my own because I never have been. I don’t see how I/we can afford a divorce.

Well, sometimes you can.

This week we are going to study endplays by declarer. He gives an opponent the lead when that opponent has to make a lead that gains declarer a trick (or at the worst, allows him to break even).

In today’s deal, South is in six spades. West leads the club queen. Declarer wins with his ace and cashes the spade ace, being disgruntled to see East discard a club. How should South continue?

North’s raise to three spades promised 5-7 support points.

With an unavoidable trump loser, it looks as though declarer needs the diamond finesse to work – but not so. He should cash his spade king and club king, ruff his last club in the dummy, and take his heart tricks.

The key position has been reached. Two of the three side suits have been eliminated, and declarer has trumps in each hand to benefit from a ruff-andsluff. Now South gives West the lead by exiting with a trump.

What can West do after winning with his queen?

Nothing. If he leads a diamond, it is away from the king.

Or if he plays his last club, South ruffs in the dummy and sluffs his diamond queen.

It’s heads South wins, tails East-West loses.
