Trial set for woman charged in Batavia murder Baines accused in 2012 stabbing death

The salad kits were shipped nationwide to one bulk warehouse chain for retail sale in its in-store cafés. FSIS and the company had received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products as of Friday morning, according to the release.

ent didn’t understand her Miranda rights before being interviewed by Batavia police.

Baines’ defense attorney, Sandra Byrd, had filed a motion seeking to suppress evidence obtained through four interviews Batavia police had with Baines. During the interviews, Baines told police she had a knife in her hand, but did not confess to the murder, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Christine Bayer had said.

Kevin Bretz had testified Baines told him she was bipolar after she was told she was being charged with first-degree murder.

Police responding to the initial incident in 2012 found two women, one of them Baines, struggling with each other at the bottom of a stairwell. Officers said they later found three knives in the hallway where the women had been struggling.

“Evidence in this case points to [Baines] being in

possession of three knives before the stabbing of Jackson, and being in possession of one knife at the time that Jackson was stabbed,” according to court records.

After conducting a field investigation, police said they were able to determine the incident occurred as a result of a domestic dispute between the victim and Baines.

Baines remains in the Kane County Jail on a $750,000 bail.

She has been in custody for more than 800 days.

Batavia man sentenced to six years for identity theft

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Batavia man has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated identity theft.

Edward R. Arbet, 55, had been charged with aggravated identity theft, theft exceeding $300, unlawful use of a credit card and two counts of forgery, all felonies.

Edward He also was R. Arbet ordered to pay $1,800.17 in restitution. The identity theft was considered aggravated because the victim, a Batavia man, is older than 60 years old, Batavia Police

Detective Kevin Bretz said.

A police investigation began in early June, when a store owner reported Arbet attempted to use a stolen credit card he obtained from an acquaintance to purchase clothing, police said. Arbet continued to use the credit card for goods and cash withdrawals.

“He used it at [at] least three stores in Batavia, and an ATM or two,” Bretz had said.

Arbet also signed the victim’s name on at least two receipts, police said. He was charged with stealing more than $1,500 in cash and goods.

Arbet has been charged

by Batavia police in the past with such offenses as disorderly conduct, criminal trespass to land and illegal possession of open alcohol.

GIVING IT AWAY Government agencies explain purchases of trinkets

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Visitors to the Kane County Coroner’s Office might see something they likely wouldn’t expect – plastic red eggs filled with Silly Putty.

The trinkets recently caused a stir at a County Board committee meeting.

Chairman Chris Lauzen criticized Rob Russell for spending more than $1,000 on the items.

Russell, however, defended his purchase. The items, he said, were for community events, such as National Night Out. “You’re giving back to the community,” he said. “You want to create a good impression by giving a little gift.”

While other governmental agencies might not give away Silly Putty, many agencies purchase other items – including shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, toy badges, flashlight pens and keychains – for public consumption, officials said.

The city of St. Charles, for example, celebrated the 2012 ribbon-cutting of a new water treatment facility with water bottles (total cost of $500); the 2011 groundbreaking of Red Gate Bridge with paper weights and keychains ($4,529.11); and the bridge’s 2012 opening with cookies and suckers ($1,105).

City Administrator Mark Koenen – who at the time of these milestones served as public works director – said such items are about celebration and being a good host.

“The trinket is a commemorative item that we believe people who take the time to participate in these activities appreciate,” he said.

“It’s also a way of saying thank you.”

dered for the water treatment facility not only promotes reuse, Koenen said, but it also encourages people to drink tap water.

Other public bodies – particularly police and fire agencies – said the items are given away for a reason.

“You try to be responsible with these items,” St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Dave Kintz said.

Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler said such trinkets as pencils, plastic badges and stickers are a fun way to engage kids officers might encounter.

The gifts also help police show children that they are the good guys and are approachable, he said.

“When they ask for things like that ... it helps us break that barrier,” Gengler said.

Similarly, each of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District’s vehicles carry a bin filled with materials – toy helmets, fire safety books, temporary tattoos and more – to hand out whenever the opportunity arises, Assistant Chief Tate Haley said.

In addition to reminding kids about fire safety – such as stop, drop and roll – he said the trinkets can help soothe a child whose parent requires medical attention.

Haley didn’t know offhand how much the fire district spends on the materials, some of which are donated.

“It’s very minimal for the

benefits you get out of it,” he said.

Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said he is cognizant of how much is spent on giveaway items.

He recently ordered flashlight pens for such functions as the Campton Hills Safety Fair and National Night Out after getting a good deal on them.

“Whatever we can get for free, we try to take advantage of,” he said.

Promotional items also have a place in recruitment efforts.

Kintz said the St. Charles Police Department has given away personal-sized hand sanitizers at college job fairs as a way to draw people to its

table. Because the bottles are marked with the department’s logo, he said, the recruits also walk away with something to remember it by.

For an office that deals with subject matter that can be difficult and gruesome, Russell said an egg of Silly Putty can help make the coroner’s office more approachable.

“It’s an icebreaker to get people to talk about this office and what we do,” he said.

Although Kane County is working to close a $2 million gap in its general fund budget for next year, the coroner said his Silly Putty spending won’t make or break a budget.

“It’s only one thing,” he said, “and it’s such a small part of the budget.”

8 Driver dies

after car hits utility pole Crash occurred near Sugar Grove

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a fatal crash that occurred Friday afternoon near Sugar Grove.

About 5:45 p.m., the Kane County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Densmore Road, south of Hankes Road, for a report of a car that had crashed into a utility pole. The crash occurred near Prestbury subdivision. According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle left the road for an unknown reason and struck the pole. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was a helicopter dispatched to the scene, but no one was transported.

Of all things, Karen most enjoyed spending time with her children; especially traveling across the country on annual trips to Disneyland. She took great pride in all of their accomplishments but was happiest just being able to have quiet time at home with her beloved son and daughter.

She delighted in family gatherings with all of her extended family and enjoyed watching all the kids grow up over the years. Karen’s beautiful dark eyes, sweet smile, and loving voice will be forever missed.

She spent many years in both Illinois and Orange County, California, teaching young children with special needs. She met her future husband, Jeff, in California where they resided for several years before returning to Illinois to raise their two children, Alexandrea and Matt. Karen was a devoted and loving mom not only to her own children but to the many very special children she taught over the course of nearly 30 years.

Howard “Jay” Hesenflow, Jr., of Maple Park, passed away August 17th, 2014, at Central Dupage Hospital after suffering a serious stroke.

He was born September 12th, 1948, to Howard Sr., and Myrtle Hesenflow. He graduated St. Charles High School, and later became a Marine who served in Vietnam.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and hanging out with friends. He was a loving father and friend who will be missed by many.

He is survived by his children, Jason, Jake, Jaime (Rich Welchko); his grandchildren, Morgan, Austin, Ryan, Logan Hesenflow, and Christopher, Brandon, and Dana Welchko. His brother, Harold; sister-in-law, Marla; and a sister, Carol Jean.

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Fox River Harley-Davidson, at 131 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, will host a charity ride on Sept. 7 for an employee’s cousin who is suffering from Lyme disease.

Registration is at 8:30 a.m. at the dealership, with the 65-mile round-trip ride beginning at 10:30 a.m., sales manager Brian Rapier said.

When riders return to the dealership, they can participate in an after-party from 1 to 4 p.m., with food and a band.

The cost is $15 for a single rider, $25 for two and $10 for the party, he said.

Valker, who lives in California, is the cousin of Shannon Bell, the dealership’s motor clothes and general merchandise director.

Rapier said a video of Valker’s suffering was “gut-wrenching,” especially since the insurance does not cover care for chronic Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, that is transmitted to

humans through the bite of an infected tick, according to the Centers for Disease Control website.

The blacklegged or deer tick spreads the disease in the northeast and north central United States and the western blacklegged tick on the Pacific coast, according to the CDC. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and a characteristic skin rash. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart,

and the nervous system, according to the CDC. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society strives to improve doctors’ understanding of diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease.

Valker has been suffering from chronic Lyme disease for the past three years, with severe and debilitating symptoms, Rapier said.

She did not get treatment until late in the infection because doctors were unable to diagnose it properly, Rapier said.

“This is like their 10th to 12th doctor,” Rapier said.

“Her husband posts [online]

Valker is so ill, she needs full-time home care, and treatment for the next six to 12 months is estimated to cost $100,000. In 2005, Valker was voted WLUP-FM 97.9’s first Loop Rock Girl.

“It helps a young lady to start her modeling career,” Rapier said.

While serving as the Loop Rock Girl, Valker met her future husband, Paul Valker, who worked at the station, according to a statement from the station.

Project to start in September

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Work will soon begin on a renovation of Messenger Public Library’s youth services department.

Library board trustees recently approved a $196,800 construction contract with LJ Morse Construction Co. of Aurora for the project. LJ

Morse Construction submitted the lowest bid.

The library has budgeted $267,300 for the project, including construction costs and other costs, such as furniture and phone wiring.

The project is set to begin the second week of September and will be substantially completed by the end of December, Messenger Library Administrator Kevin Davis said. As part of the renovation project, the youth program room will be redesigned and expanded.

“We want to expand our programming space,” Da-

vis said. “Our programming room was inadequate to meet our needs.”

In addition, the information and service desk in the youth services department will be centralized, shelving will be reconfigured, and a screened porch will become an off-desk work room for staff as part of the project. Davis said the screened porch was “underutilized.”

Davis said the renovation is needed because the library continues to get a lot of use.

In July, the library saw 15,000 patrons.

“We’re really more of a

community center than your traditional library,” Davis said. “We need to better serve our patrons.”

The library plans to limit the amount of disruptions the renovation project will create.

“We will try to provide a continuity of service throughout the project,” Davis said.

In addition to the project, Messenger Public Library on Monday will launch a new website at www.messengerpl.org. Davis said the new website will provide patrons with more information.

Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent takes off his glasses, dons a cape and then, faster than a speeding bullet, becomes super-strong Superman. Peter Parker, bitten by a radioactive spider, transforms into Spider-Man, complete with web-slinging superpowers and acute “spidey-senses.” Humble and lovable Shoeshine Boy morphs into Underdog whenever peril threatens his Sweet Polly Purebred.

Then there are chipmunks.

That’s right, the chippy.

That oh-so-common eater of birdseed, grass seed and other bits of vegetable matter, has a secret identity I’ll bet many of you will find positively shocking.

Li’l ol’ Tamias striatus sometimes, when conditions are right, turns into a ... cue the kettle drums ...

Carnivore.

An eater of meat.

I suppose this trait, to be most correct, would make chipmunks omnivores. That is, eaters of both plant and animal material.

But still, the sight of a cute-as-a-button Chip, or Dale, with flesh hanging from its jaws, blood dripping from its teeth, gives even the most seasoned naturalists reason to take a second look.

My friend Peggy Doty, who leads the team at Russell Woods Environmental Center in Genoa, recently had occasion to view such an astounding event. Even better, she had the presence of mind to take pictures.

It turns out chipmunks, and in fact most rodents, will supplement their plant-based diets with meaty proteins if and when the opportunity presents itself. It could be that a nest was left unguarded, and tiny, helpless hatchlings are suddenly free for the picking. Likewise for newborn mammals, should their parents leave them unattended.

He might not be stronger than a locomotive, or able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but somewhere out there in the DeKalb County countryside, there’s a chipmunk whose secret identity has finally been exposed.

Or maybe an adult animal has recently met its demise.

A bird crashes into a window.

A squirrel gets hit by a car.

In still other cases, chipmunks, as well as many of

their rodent cousins, actually will kill prey – anything from juicy insects to adult birds, reptiles, amphibians and, sometimes, each other.

Silly Putty not all child’s play Challenging as it is to debate Silly Putty with a straight face, the latest back and forth between Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and Coroner Rob Russell brings a worthwhile debate to the forefront.

Lauzen took Russell to task for spending a little more than $1,000 on Silly Putty as giveaways, which Russell said can be an “icebreaker” at community events such as National Night Out. Lauzen and Russell have seemingly been at odds since both took office, and that context makes it easy to overlook the substance of the issue. Lauzen publicly challenged Russell for spending taxpayer money on Silly Putty, while Russell said it is important “to create a good impression” in the community.

Singling out Russell as Lauzen did is probably unfair as it is relatively commonplace for departments to distribute cheap knickknacks at community events. Nonetheless, if you’re advocating for more resources for your office, as Russell is, including the need for a modernized coroner facility, opening yourself up to the perception of making frivolous purchases is probably imprudent.

As Kane County Chronicle reporter Ashley Sloboda has detailed in today’s paper, the city of St. Charles and several local police and fire departments have found occasions to give away items such as temporary tattoos, water bottles and key chains, sometimes corresponding with the theme of an event.

We recognize it is important for some organizations that serve the public to do community outreach and build trust, especially police departments. But with tight budgets practically a universal reality these days, limiting expenditures on nonessential items is the way to go.

Government officials making these types of purchases need to be sure they are thinking through their budget priorities before buying gifts – even cheap ones – to hand out to the public. If it is decided that the purchases are worthwhile, they should be bought in conservative quantities and, ideally, in a way that includes useful contact information or other details for the public’s benefit.

Seeking donations to pay for extras – as some departments say they do – might be the best practice.

Silly Putty might be child’s play, but making smart decisions with taxpayer dollars is not.

Bank of America settlement leaves questions unanswered BLOOMBERG NEWS The Justice Department’s $16.7 billion settlement with Bank of America Corp. is a big win. Prosecutors deserve praise for extracting the largest civil settlement with a single entity in U.S. history, as well as for forcing the bank to admit to numerous shortcomings in creating, packaging and selling defective home loans.

Yet the headline figure, impressive as it is, obscures important details, papers over the lack of criminal prosecutions and raises many questions.

Here’s the most pressing of those questions: What will happen to the money? The latest settlement brings to about $125 billion the penalties large banks have had to pay to resolve civil lawsuits by the U.S. related to the mortgage meltdown. No one seems to have the complete picture on how it will all be spent.

Large chunks – $5 billion, in

Bank of America’s case – are penalties that go straight to the U.S. Treasury. Congress will allocate those as it sees fit. What becomes of the rest is a little muddy. Also unclear is whether checks are in place to make sure the money isn’t wasted.

More than $900 million of the Bank of America settlement, for example, will go to six states, including Illinois, California and New York. Those states’ lawmakers, attorneys general and governors get to divvy it up according to state laws (if they exist). Such a large pot of money risks becoming a goody bag for state politicians and law enforcement to fight over.

Then there’s the so-called soft money – $7 billion in the Bank of America deal. This will take the form of loan forgiveness, low-interest loans and other relief to struggling homeowners and communities affected by foreclosures. An independent monitor will oversee

it all, equipped with a Justice Department menu of possible projects – principal reductions on underwater mortgages, home loans in distressed neighborhoods, construction of affordable rental units and so on.

But how much of this will be a good use of the money? How will taxpayers and bank shareholders know if it isn’t? And how much of it would the bank have spent anyway? (Many of the home loans it plans to restructure have already been written down; Bank of America will get credit for the modifications anyway.)

And that isn’t the end of the questions. Although the settlement doesn’t preclude a criminal case against the bank or individuals, that prospect seems unlikely six years after the fact. This settlement fails to go into who was responsible for what. Nobody, except the people responsible, can regard that as a satisfactory outcome.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The last time Cyndi Violett was Kaneland girls volleyball’s head coach, neither the libero position nor rally scoring were in place in Illinois high school volleyball.

Violett was quite a bit different, too. Having taken over for Kerri McCastland just days before the start of preseason practice earlier this month, Violett said she’s “probably a lot more mature” than when she coached the Knights in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“After having kids and being a mom, I think I’m probably stricter,” Violett said. “Have fun when we need to have fun, but I’m also very disciplined and strict.”

The players, Violett mused,

“Life happens, and you’re meant to step up when you need to step up. I really felt like I’m ready for this and I’m excited about it, so long talk with the family, and they’re excited for me.”

“They might call it militant,” Violett said. “I wasn’t as militant the first time. I was somewhat disciplined but it would be more like ‘Oh, we can waste 10, 15 minutes here and there,’ and I realized we can get this done in two hours. We can have practice in two hours and get through what I want to get through.”

Violett’s sense of urgency

is understandable, especially with as little time as she had to gear up for taking the program’s reins. Violett learned in late July that it was a possibility that McCastland – who recently accepted a dean’s position at DeKalb – might not return for a second season. It wasn’t until the IHSA dead period leading up to preseason practice in early August that Violett knew she was next in line.

Even after Violett ended her first tenure as head coach – saying the arrival of her third child and work on a master’s degree necessitated a breather – she maintained ties to the program, working at the official scorer’s table.

Then, former Knights coach Todd Weimer asked if she’d be willing to jump back in as an assistant coach, and she spent the past four seasons coaching under Weimer, then McCastland.

That continuity helped smooth the Knights’ late coaching transition, said senior middle blocker Riley Hannula.

“Right when we first found out we were a bit shocked because we were so close to [McCastland], and then we learned [the new coach] was

Anne Hughes, St. Charles East, Sr., DS/L: Hughes, a crafty backrow leader and strong server, teams with Chloe Rojas to give the Saints one of the area’s most seasoned combination of defenders.

Martha Konovodoff, Rosary, So., L: Konovodoff, the younger sister of senior Grace Konovodoff, impressed as a freshman starter, and will be leaned upon for leadership alongside with classmate Erin Burke, an outside hitter.

Daley Krage, St. Charles North, Jr., OH: The 6-foot-3 Krage’s blend of size and crafty mix of shots intrigued Northwestern, whose sister, class of 2014 North grad Taylor Krage, also linked up with an in-state D-I program (Northern Illinois).

Grace Loberg, Geneva, So., OH: Not only is the 6-foot-2 powerhouse – fresh off a commitment to Wisconsin – a tremendous talent, but she also will benefit from a deep pool of Vikings hitters that should open up plenty of angles to smash away.

Jancy Lundberg, Batavia, Sr., MH: A returning starter and three-year varsity player, Lundberg and fellow senior Anna Clausen will provide formidable blocking presences for Batavia.

Mikaela Mosquera, St. Charles East, Sr., MH: The 6-foot-2 Mosquera is receiving plenty of college recruiting interest and her progress during the club season encouraged Saints coach Jennie Kull.

Maddy Trnka, Aurora Central Catholic, Jr., MH: The 6-foot-1 middle has the ability to dominate and “a very high ceiling,” according to new Chargers coach Dan Drye.

Kelsey Wicinski, Geneva, Sr., L: Wicinski set a program record with 815 digs last season before committing to Maryland during the offseason. New coach Annie Seitelman is challenging her to amp up her leadership from the back row this fall.

Lauren Wiltsie, Burlington Central, Sr., OH: Though only standing 5-foot-7, Wiltsie is “a really dynamic player who can hit hard, and a very smart, great server,” according to veteran Rockets coach Marv Leavitt.

Violett considers it a good season to be back in charge, saying the team has terrific leadership that includes seniors Ellie Dunn, Anna Senese and Hannula.

Dunn, a Ball State recruit, is one of the conference’s most potent hitters.

“I don’t want her leaving here thinking ‘I wish we would have done this,’ ” Violett said.

“And that takes a team, so it’s not just Ellie, but Ellie’s going to be part of a team to lead us where we can go.”

The Knights can go all the way, the way Violett sees it.

At least that’s the goal she’s setting.

“Go [to state] or nothing is my feeling, so that’s the big picture,” Violett said. “But along that way we have to be

in the running for conference, and obviously Sycamore and DeKalb are going to be our tough matches there, I feel.”

In addition to her senior captains, Violett expects junior hitter Sami Burgin, setters Holly Fedderly and Hannah Nauert and defensive linchpins Brittany Grider and Kathy Nguyen to play major roles.

As the Knights prepare for their season-opening tournament at Wheaton North next week, Violett said most aspects of being a head coach are coming back naturally, fundraising duties notwithstanding.

Violett reclaiming her old post wasn’t a surprise to everybody.

“Life happens, and you’re meant to step up when you need to step up,” Violett said.

“I really felt like I’m ready for this and I’m excited about it, so long talk with the family, and they’re excited for me. My husband always said ‘You’re going to go back, I know you will. You can’t stay away from it.’ So here I am.”

Geneva First-year Geneva coach Annie Seitelman takes over a team with huge expectations as several key players return from last year’s sectional champion team. Division I recruits Kelsey Wicinski (senior libero, Maryland) and Grace Loberg (sophomore outside hitter, Wisconsin) are the headliners but talent abounds, including senior middle blocker Maddie Courter, sophomore outside hitter Ally Barrett and senior outside hitter Hannah Lanasa, whose younger sister, sophomore Mikayla Lanasa, is in the mix at setter with senior Megan Cameron. Tryouts were tricky and battles for playing time are intense for a deep, talented bunch. “I think there’s a healthy, competitive culture kind of created and all of my varsity kids are helping contribute to help create that culture,” Seitelman said. “So far it’s been a pretty friendly competition, but nonetheless it’s competitive.”

St. Charles East St. Charles East might not have the same front row firepower as Geneva or St. Charles North, but veteran coach Jennie Kull – coming off a 31-win season – knows how to assemble a winner. Coming off an injury-plagued junior year, 6-foot-2 middle hitter Mikaela Mosquera gives the Saints a high-end blocking presence and East’s defensive prowess is solidified in the back row with the return of veterans Chloe Rojas and Anne Hughes. Senior Megan Schildmeyer projects to set for East this season after spending last year as a right-side hitter. Kull’s daughter, Morgan, and Morgan Windau will be setting, looking to link up with new hitters such as Kyla Augustine, Emily Schildmeyer and the 6-foot-3 Avery Macklin.

St. Charles North While Geneva is widely considered the Upstate Eight Conference River favorite this fall, a North front row that will include potent outside hitters Daley Krage (a 6-foot-3 Northwestern recruit), 6-foot Claire Anderson plus sand volleyball recruit Emily Carroll at middle hitter is plenty intimidating in its own right. North coach Lindsey Hawkins said it will be tricky for teams to thwart Krage and Anderson at the same time, saying Krage “has a lot of shots in her repertoire.”

Junior right side hitter/setter Jaclyn Taylor impresses Hawkins with her consistency and senior setter Taryn Dal Degan lends another experienced presence. Defensive specialist Sam Lappin and Carroll bring nasty serves to the table.

St. Francis The two-time defending IHSA Class 3A state champion Spartans are again loaded, with returning stalwarts and Division I recruits Molly Haggerty (junior outside higher, Nebraska) and Mary Boken (senior middle blocker, Clemson) leading this year’s vast collection of talent. Senior libero Lisa Mordell should help anchor the defense, while sophomore twin sisters Kamryn Malloy and Laney Malloy should be primed for breakout seasons after getting a taste of varsity play during the Spartans’ 2013 championship run.

ACC football discovers, solves crisis A week shy of kickoff, the Aurora Central Catholic football program already has stared down its first crisis of the season.

After a summer of failed attempts to firm up details regarding a Week 1 matchup with visiting Tilden High School, ACC coach Brian Casey finally reached the Tilden athletic department Friday morning.

He didn’t like what he heard.

Casey was informed that Tilden only had six players available and needed to forfeit the game, scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

With their blood pressures spiking, Casey and ACC athletic director Sean Bieterman, both furiously worked the phones, placing calls in and out of state, to see if any replacement opponent could be lined up on such short notice. Finally, Casey had success with Wauwatosa East High School in suburban Milwaukee, though the Chargers will have to travel there for a 7 p.m. game Friday.

“It’s incredibly disappointing, but it’s the situation we’re in,” Bieterman said.

“It’s out of our control. I feel good about fact we found a game for Week 1. It’s one of those things where you’re in a scramble. I honestly thought there was no chance we’d find a game. We’re fortunate this worked out.”

In Wisconsin, this is the first weekend of the season, so Wauwatosa East’s first game of the season was Friday night. By mid-afternoon Friday, just as the final details of the hastily arranged agreement were being finalized, members of ACC’s coaching staff were speeding north to scout the Chargers’ new opponent.

Casey said ACC’s players were initially downcast about

losing the chance to play in front of family and friends in the opener, but quickly regrouped.

“We had a team retreat up [to Wisconsin] last weekend in Lake Geneva, and the name of the retreat was ‘Chargers Up North,’ ” Casey said. ... “Within 10 minutes, they kind of came back to ‘Chargers Return North.’ So, who knows, maybe it can work out to our advantage that way, but it’s unfortunate for everyone, really.”

Cougars notch another straight win

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Clinton righthander Tyler Herb hoped to rendezvous with Cougars catcher Will Remillard this weekend in a reunion of former Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

With Remillard rehabbing an injury at home in New York, it wasn’t to be, although Herb hardly needed his onetime batterymate to gather intel on the Cougars.

“They have the best record

in the minor leagues,” Herb said. “Coming in and facing them, it’s always a tough challenge, and hopefully, we can give them a good fight.”

That aspiration takes an added impetus these days.

The Cougars won their season-high 12th straight game with Friday’s 9-1 victory against the LumberKings, strengthening their hold on the Midwest League and, well, affiliated baseball.

Kane County (85-45 overall, 40-20 second half) hasn’t lost at home since July 28 and

hasn’t lost, period, since Peoria earned a 3-2 home victory Aug. 9. Amid “Back to School” night at the ballpark, when the reformed troublemakers among the crowd of 8,229 surely pondered bygone “Kick Me” sign pranks, do the Cougars sense a more figurative target on their backs?

“Somewhat,” first baseman Jacob Rogers said. “I mean, everybody gives us their best shot every day. We go out there and play hard no matter who we’re facing, no matter if we think it’s a great pitcher,

a [top] overall pick or whatnot. Kind of just go out there and do your thing, make sure you have a great approach. Go roll out the ball pretty much.

It’s a little different than college. I mean, everybody’s good here.”

Dempster and Cougars still keep in touch Veteran honored by local firefighters after game

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Ryan Dempster laughed Friday when asked whether any other ballpark in America sported his likeness on top of the ticket window.

“Even crazier is the soccer place there,” Dempster said. “Huge mural on the side there.”

The veteran right-hander of 16 major league seasons passed neighboring Strikers Fox Valley en route to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to support something of even greater magnitude to his life than baseball.

Dempster’s ceremonial first pitch and subsequent radio appearance at his one-time minor league home bookended a night of gratitude. He’s humbled the Cougars partnered with his Dempster Family Foundation earlier this season.

“It’s a really great thing, you know, to be able to have something so close to Chicago, somewhere that I have a direct connection with and playing here before,” Dempster said.

“It’s really awesome to see them pay tribute like that.

They could pick thousands of charities to give money to, and to give it to the Dempster

Foundation is really awesome.

It was a really good night.”

Dempster, 37, was a Florida Marlins farmhand when he pitched for the Cougars in 1996, going 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA in four starts after a trade from the Texas Rangers organization.

While he endeared himself to a far greater volume of Chicago baseball fans while pitching with the Cubs from 2004 to 2012, Dempster impressed Warren and Sam Drewes of St. Charles years earlier.

The Drewes, Dempster’s host parents, have remained in touch through the years.

Dempster texted Warren Drewes on Thursday about his impending visit the next night, a gesture Drewes gushed about, among several others.

“A thousand recollections,” said Drewes, a longtime season ticket holder with his wife.

“Forget baseball – one of the neatest people you will ever meet, and he turned out to be a fantastic ballplayer. And we’ve continued to have a close relationship with him ever since that year. You know, I’ve had over 100 ballplayers live in my house, I’ve had over 20 of them make it to the majors. Most of them are very gracious, but, you know, our lives drift away and …we may not see a lot of

them.

“Ryan has been that exceptional person who’s been always there to socialize with us, do other things, even in his busy life. And we’ve tried to be supportive in his charity and through the things that are important in his life, as well.

But just a wonderful human being.”

Dempster retired at the end of last season after helping the Boston Red Sox to a World Series title. Although he keeps in shape, he acknowledges a return to baseball hasn’t called him because of the time he gets to spend with his family in Chicago, where the Dempsters keep their home.

The Dempster Family Foundation hinges on helping those affected by 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, a condition from which Dempster’s daughter, Riley, suffers. The disorder stems from a small missing piece of the 22nd chromosome and can affect every system in the human body.

Dempster wore a shirt with the message “22Q GOOGLE IT” on the front, but wasn’t all business.

Cougars left fielder Shawon Dunston Jr. played in front of his father, a former Cubs All-Star infielder, for the first time as an affiliated player Monday.

Monday’s 10th-inning single, humbly downplayed by both Dunstons, clearly marked a watershed moment to be commemorated in the postgame photo the men took on the field. Another memory banked came in the top of the first, when, with Burlington threatening, Dunston Jr. uncorked a perfect throw to nab the Bees’ Bo Way at the plate for the final out.

A proud papa saw the feat from just a few rows away, seated behind the screen near the Cougars’ dugout on the first-base side. Finally, some eyewitness data. The Dunstons speak nearly every day, but have not met on a field in person since the Giants and Cubs organizations met in Arizona in spring training.

“He just tells me pretty much keep working. The entire time, keep working, from April until now,” Dunston Jr. said. “Finish strong and stay mentally strong. You’re not finished yet and don’t let up.”

“Guess I did pretty good.”

He figures to stay in that role as next month’s Midwest League playoffs approach, and perhaps this week’s family powwow will provide an intangible edge.

Lefty Michael Heesch, who kept the Cougars afloat with 21⁄3 innings of scoreless relief Monday, attests to such an internal boost. A Prairie Ridge product whose family relocated to Bartlett before retiring to Florida this year, Heesch welcomed his parents every time he pitched at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in 2013.

The Heesches also unleashed their support on the road a few times last season.

“I mean, it’s nice when your whole family comes and watches you play and gets to see what you’re doing and stuff, because it’s a huge part of your life and this team’s your family,” Heesch said.

“It’s pretty cool, I think,” Way said. “I think my parents didn’t know what they were getting into when they named me that. But it’s just a name, and I haven’t really thought anything of it.”

GENEVA – By his namesake’s estimation, Cougars left fielder Shawon Dunston Jr. produced four quality plate appearances in five tries Monday night.

The last one, which should live for some time in the family’s baseball narrative, was a game-ending single in the 10th inning.

That a sequence two innings earlier topped the elder Dunston’s postgame agenda captured the essence of his past and present. A former Cubs All-Star infielder now working with the San Francisco Giants, Dunston watched his son ground out to shortstop and prepared the same level of feedback. As usual. “[Monday], he got the game-winning hit, but we’re going to talk about the fourth Shawon AB, when Dunston Sr. he grounded out,” Dunston said. “What you have to do to be successful. But we talk about the good things and the things that he didn’t do right.”

Dunston works as the Giants’ instant replay reviewer, and boy if he didn’t witness some sequences worth reliving Monday night. We did some hill repeats, but it’s been good to get back, get back to running some hardcore mileage.

Muscle memory can be a big thing in running. Is your body in tune to running at Elburn Woods?

Yeah, for sure. Just the course and everything. You remember certain parts

where you speed up or the footing where you have to remember a pattern or to find those little ruts, but yeah, definitely. … In middle school we would run there, actually, race there. I raced the bottom course. So it is a familiar course to me, I’d say.

What were some summer training highlights?

I trained for triathlon with my triathlon team, so I would say it was an intense summer. We did a lot of races, and some races were back to back, but it was intense training. … I also went down to Monterrey, Mexico, for the Youth Olympic Trials. … It was so cool. It was so much fun. The race, all the athletes definitely were in tip-top shape as myself, and we just all went at it. The race was good, it was fun. At one point, we went through a canal that was man-made and went through the mountains and

all that stuff. It was very neat to see that part of Mexico.

Has triathlon taken you outside the Lower 48 before?

I have traveled, I think, two times. One for Monterrey and then I went to Brazil two summers ago, so that was awesome. I just loved Brazil so much. And then we swam in an ocean there with these huge waves. It was crazy. It was a struggle. The waves would just kind of pull you in and then topple you, but it was fun.

Kaneland cross country had a strong season in 2013. What’s the outlook this year?

Our team is looking really good right now. We’ve got all girls, for the most part, healthy, but we’re trying to get everyone healthy so we can make it to state. Definitely to make it to state is the goal, because that’s so much more fun as a team than as an

individual.

You mentioned injuries.

How’s your hip?

I’ve really been on top of that, making sure that I’m healthy with everything. So yes, I am healthy, my hip is all good. It hasn’t bothered me, thank the Lord.

What are you leaning toward in college with triathlon now a sanctioned sport at some schools?

They made triathlon a sport in college and said they would offer scholarships for it. Right now, it’s kind of sad because not many schools have taken it and said, yeah, they want to offer it at this time. But I’m going to go the route of cross country and track because running is my first love. …

I’m still kind of, like, looking around, I’m not 100 percent set on one school. Still scheduling visits and still trying to decide exactly where.

The group cited influence from counterparts in DeKalb, who held a similar outing at a Northern Illinois football game last season.

“A lot of our guys are friends with their guys,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t so much a challenge as it was, ‘Hey, the Cougars are in your guys’ town. What can you do?’ ”

Kaneland senior girls cross country standout Victoria Clinton fought an early-season hip injury in 2013, a test to her resolve after winning the Class 2A individual state title in 2012.

She recovered to enjoy a solid state series that culminated with the Knights’ fifth-place finish in the 2A team race.

Back with much of the same core, Clinton is primed to keep Kaneland climbing after a busy summer that also included time with her Geneva-based triathlon team, Multisport Madness. Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley touched base with Clinton about her summer and the upcoming season. Here’s an edited transcript in the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat:

Sophia McDonnell of St. Charles was selected by the Hershey Company to participate in the Hershey North American Track and Field Finals on Aug. 2. Sophia placed sixth in the girls’ 1600 meter run for ages 13-14 with 5:32.39. She is an eighth-grader at Haines Middle School.

The Aurora Noon Lions Club will hold its annual Football Coaches’ Night and pasta dinner fundraiser from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Luigi’s Pizza and Fun Center, 732 Prairie St. in Aurora. The public is invited.

WEEKEND LIFE A closer look at T-shirt message “Break’n Ankles Shatter’n Dreams?” Really, Nike?

I was school shopping with my kids last Sunday when I spotted a Nike shirt bearing this slogan, prominently displayed on a mannequin near the entrance to the Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Geneva.

My teenagers groaned and quickly vanished while I waited to speak to Diane, the manager on duty.

I told her that I found the message disturbing and asked her what she thought of it. She admitted that she hadn’t, really, so I explained my belief that messages like this one promote violence on the playing field and elsewhere. I shared that I’ve heard parents and kids say similar things – even at the lesser-competitive recreational level of soccer.

“Kick her in the knees!” someone shouted, during one memorable, muddy and otherwise miserable rec soccer game three-and-a-half years ago. In disbelief I whipped my head around to see who’d issued such a directive. The MOM of one of my daughter’s teammates? For real? Yes, yes it was. I like her. I like her kid.

But I don’t like what she said. How old were these girls, 9? Ten, at most?

I couldn’t believe my ears. And then she said it again.

What little kid, when she suits up to play a “game,” ever considers the possibility that she might deliberately be assaulted on the field?

When a couple of the girls chimed in I snapped to attention and hushed them with a quiet, “Ooh, come on now, let’s be sweet.” Wow. Kids are so impressionable, aren’t they? It’s frightening to think that an attitude like this one can mushroom so quickly. But it can. Think a slogan on a T-shirt is any less powerful?

As for Diane, she happily agreed to pass my concerns on to Dick’s upper management. To her credit, she also volunteered that she would take the shirt off the mannequin. If only every other retailer would “just do it.”

I’ve noticed, in all of my years as a soccer mom, that some kids play dirty. Some adult coaches play dirty, too (though not our own, thank goodness), and encourage this. I know at least a couple of kids whose athletic careers have been sidelined (some have even been hospitalized) by what I believe are the effects of this attitude, and I’ve had enough. It’s got

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose to stop. But it won’t, unless each of us does our own part and chips away at it. In my opinion, if we passively accept this attitude, and don’t speak up when we encounter it, we become part of the problem.

“Why do you have to be so soft?” my son asked, when I returned to the car after my chat with Diane.

“Because I care, about you and Holly and every other child who just wants to play a game,” I replied.

Accidents and injuries happen, of course, but we’re talking about whether or not it’s OK to condone, and, in fact, promote the use of violence on the field – or anywhere else.

What kind of society do we want for our children?

When I posted this picture and aired my concerns on Facebook, my friends were shocked, including one, whose son was hospitalized after the opposing (high school) football coach allegedly told his players to “get him out of the game.” (One of this coach’s players shared a mutual friend with her son, who told him.)

This mom also pointed out that the “Break’n ankles” sentiment displayed on the Nike shirt is common basketball parlance. The expression “break’n ankles” is commonly used to refer to one’s outstanding moves on the basketball court that can theoretically lead to one’s opponents breaking their ankles in their efforts to obtain control of the ball, but that defense is indefensible, if you ask me.

This slogan can easily be misunderstood by those unfamiliar with its origins. Besides, whatever happened to Nike’s “Just Do It.” campaign,anyhow? This positive message no doubt inspired millions to get out there and enjoy moving their bodies, and managed to sell plenty of T-shirts, too, without also inspiring people to tear each other down – literally or figuratively.

I’m also waiting for a response from the media folks at Dick’s. I’d love to see these companies exhibit some social responsibility and take these shirts off store shelves altogether, not just off the mannequins (at Dick’s), but in the meantime, I’m voting with my pocketbook. So far, Dick’s gets my vote. When I called Diane’s supervisor on Wednesday to praise her responsiveness and swift action, Nate cheerfully volunteered

(before he knew my name or affiliation as a columnist with the Kane County Chronicle): “We don’t want to offend. It doesn’t matter whether it’s one [person] or a million. You’re a loyal customer. You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t.”

Well yes, Nate, it’s true, my debit card has gotten quite a workout at your store over the years. You keep up this approach to customer service and yup, I’ll stay a fan.

Take heart! All of those lawn duties you never got to this summer actually are best done in fall. September is the best time to manage broadleaf weeds, including dandelions and creeping Charlie, as they are now actively drawing nutrients from the surface and storing them in their roots. So, an application of weed killer applied in fall will be far more effective than one done in spring, when the weed’s process is reversed.

Thatch control and aeration help renew the soil and root structure of the turf by relieving compaction, allowing air to reach the roots, and opens up new passageways for nutrients and water to reach the roots. Repeated annual aeration will also help alleviate bumpy lawns far more effectively than with a roller.

Do not forget the critical application of fertilizer in September, which helps to give that last bit of growth before finally going dormant.

With the long summer days waning, fresh tomatoes coming out of the garden (finally!) and the flowers looking exhausted from the summer weather, the big ramp-up to fall gardening has begun.

While this might bring about thoughts of pumpkin picking and raking, it is – in fact – the best time to help improve your lawn for next year. The more temperate weather of fall is preferred by turf grass, plus it has nice warm soil not found in springtime. Lay out your plan for upcoming months: repair, renew, rest.

Late August is the best time to repair bare patches in the lawn, with the warm soil germinating the seed quickly.

For best results, add some organic matter or fresh soil to the bare patches and work into the top 2 inches of the existing soil along with some balanced starter fertilizer, such as 10-10-10.

Spread seed lightly, and cover with straw (lawn patch kits work well also if convenience is more of a factor). Keep the surface damp, and germination will occur quickly. Tread lightly on new grass and mow after several weeks have passed.

‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ worth wait

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now “Sin City,” the groundbreaking, eye-popping, green screen-filled adaptation of Frank Miller’s comic books, was released in 2005. A sequel was announced almost immediately. It’s been a long time between that announcement and this new film, which is neither a prequel nor a sequel ... or maybe it’s both a prequel and a sequel.

That part doesn’t matter; what matters is that it was worth the wait.

It’s great being back in Basin City, with its bizarre characters and quease-inducing situations. It likely won’t be great for anyone who hasn’t seen the first film, as many references to it are made. And it’s a bad idea for anyone who did see the first one and was completely turned off by its unflinching celebration of unspeakable violence, because that factor is upped here by about tenfold.

Most of the characters are back, though a few are

played by different actors.

Not to worry, big Mickey Rourke returns as big-hearted, extremely dangerous and often confused Marv; Powers Booth is slimier than ever as power-crazed Senator Roark; and Jessica Alba proves she still knows how to pole dance as Nancy. But Josh Brolin has taken over Clive Owen’s role as Dwight; Dennis Haysbert now has the late Michael Clarke Duncan’s part of golden-eyed, pain-inflicting Manute (and we learn, in gruesome detail, how that golden eye came to be); and Jamie Chung has replaced Devon Aoki as “deadly little” Miho.

There are new characters to meet, the two most intriguing among them being slick and cool Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who comes to town with intentions of winning at the casino, and Ava (Eva Green), the greeneyed, crimson-lipped dame of the title.

Different stories come spinning out of this movie like tires in its high-speed car chases. Some of them stand

alone, while others intertwine with each other. There are less rules in the telling of these stories than there are in lawless “Basin City.”

But there are certainly follow-through lines. For instance, like its predecessor, there is visual dazzle from frame one. The film is mostly in the starkest of black & white, with piercing spots of color that know just where to exist – such as Ava’s eyes and lips. Robert Rodriguez, who produced, directed, edited, photographed and even wrote some of the music, makes the whites of people’s eyes glow brightly.

And while plenty of folks will be in the audience just because they like the look of the film, an equal number will be there for its audacity.

That previously mentioned violence, much of it done with guns and swords and fists and (watch out!) pliers, is fast and brutal. Same goes for the presentation of sex.

There are rugged fistfights, lots of backstabbing (both physical and emotional), decapitations galore and a

steady diet of people crashing through windows – sometimes of their own free will, sometimes because they’re thrown.

If you actually need a story to go with all of this, oh, there are stories. Once again, it would be a good idea to know what happened in the first film before experiencing this one. That would make it a lot easier to understand why Dwight is trying so hard to forget so many of his bad memories, and would make it crystal clear why Nancy has revenge on her mind.

But there are plenty of fans who will be satisfied by witnessing the film’s generous amount of heavy drinking, or maybe its visits with the scantily clad, weapon-toting women of Old Town, or its suggestions that both lust and power have the ability to drive men mad.

Me? I rather enjoyed the outrageously cartoonish violence and the snappy, hard-boiled dialogue, such as when an annoyed Dwight says to Ava, “I was born at night, but not last night.”

Choosing the right shoe can relieve bunion pain Dear Doctor K: I have a painful bunion. What is the best way to treat it?

Dear Reader: A bunion occurs when two bones in your foot no longer line up properly. Normally, a bone in the foot lines up straight with the first bone in your big toe. With a bunion, the joint where those two bones meet no longer is straight. Instead, there’s knobby bone bulging outward at the base of your big toe. And the big toe itself turns inward, bending toward, or even under, the other toes. As a result, the knobby bone at the base of your big toe points outward.

Bunions are a common cause of painful toes. One cause of bunions is thought to be years of wearing shoes that squeeze the toes into pointed or narrow toe boxes, forcing the toes to fold over one another. Since women wear such shoes, and since bunions are more common in women than men, that seems reasonable.

On the other hand, plenty of my female patients wear shoes that should torture their toes – but they don’t all get bunions.

And some of my male patients

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff have bunions. There’s also pretty good evidence that bunions run in families. So I doubt we really know all the causes of bunions.

Over time, a bunion can become extremely painful. You can relieve the pain by padding the bunion with felt, moleskin or a doughnut-shaped pad. Hot and cold compresses may help. Or try stretching the bunion area of your shoe with a shoe stretcher.

Orthotic shoe inserts can redistribute your weight so the bunion doesn’t constantly rub against your shoe. NSAID pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) can also help relieve pain and inflammation. If these steps don’t work, surgery can restore your toe to its normal position. The surgery is a safe procedure, but you can’t walk on the foot for several weeks, so your mobility is affected. You need crutches or other devices to walk, and using stairs is tricky.

While surgery doesn’t always relieve all the symptoms, patients are generally happy with the result. If you decide to undergo surgery, the specific procedure will depend on the severity of your condition. To treat a mild bunion, for example, the surgeon might shave the enlarged portion of the bone before realigning nearby muscles, tendons and ligaments.

To correct severe bunions, the surgeon must cut and then realign a portion of the displaced bone in the toe. Pins, screws or plates will keep the bone in position. (I’ve put an illustration of the toe before and after this procedure on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

To prevent bunions from developing, or to prevent an existing bunion from getting worse, wear shoes with roomy toe boxes.

While shoes may not be the sole cause of bunions, they can aggravate the condition.

Dr. Wallace: I’m an average teenager. I get above-average grades and do my share of work around the house.

I don’t have specific chores, but I help my mom and dad whenever they need it. I’m an only child and, luckily, our family doesn’t have any serious communication problems. Everything at home was running smoothly -- no real teen-parent problems.

Then one day my dad reads some article in a magazine written by an “expert” on teen behavior who advises parents to use a weekly “points” system. The teen has to earn 25 points from Saturday morning to the following Sunday morning, and if the teen fails to reach the number, he is punished according to his earned credits.

I agreed to go on the point system only after a rather heated argument, which my father won.

The first week I earned 20 points. Since I was short 5 points, I had my allowance cut from $10 to $5. The next week I earned 21 points, which meant I had a 10 p.m. curfew on Saturday night. This really hurt because I had a big date planned with my girlfriend. Her older sister got married that day and the reception was from 6:30 to midnight, but I had to leave at 9:45 p.m. to be home on time. (My girlfriend stayed.) If I had been late, I would have had 10 points deducted from next week’s total. Dr. Wallace: How safe are condoms in avoiding pregnancy and avoiding sexually transmitted diseases? – Nameless, Batavia, Illinois Dear Nameless:: A certified school nurse contacted me to share with our teen readers who were sexually active that condoms have about a 13 percent failure rate in preventing pregnancy and are even less effective for preventing sexually transmitted diseases. The nurse cautioned that condoms can break and, if not used correctly, can fail.

I agree that condoms must be used by teens who choose to become sexually active, but latex condoms should be used, not natural membrane condoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory studies show that latex condoms provide a continuous barrier to microorganisms as well as sperm. Natural membrane condoms cannot make this claim.

Teens who become sexually active are living dangerously. Mother Nature makes it very easy for a female to become pregnant during sexual contact, regardless of the protection used. Sexual abstinence never fails to provide peace of mind.

Claude Chabrol, a French film director perhaps best known for “Le Boucher” (“The Butcher”), said, “You make a film to distract people, to interest them, perhaps to make them think, perhaps to help them be a little less naive, a little better than they were.”

At the bridge table, if you can legally distract your opponents, it will probably be to your advantage. How do you do that? By producing unexpected bids or, especially, plays.

Do you see something distracting in this deal? South is in three notrump. West leads his fourth-highest heart. East wins with his ace and returns the heart six. What happens after that?

Note that despite holding 30 combined high-card points, three no-trump seems destined to fail.

Let’s assume South takes the second trick with his heart king and West plays the two to indicate that he started with a five-card suit.

Declarer should cross to the dummy with a club and call for the diamond jack, trying to look like someone about to take a finesse for the queen.

But East should not be distracted.

He should realize that his partner has three heart winners, grab the trick with his ace, and lead his last heart, which results in down one.

At my bridge camp in Highlands, North Carolina, in June, one player found a great way to distract West. Bill Geary of New Orleans, knowing that he was going to win only one heart trick, dropped his king under East’s ace at trick one!

When East led back the heart six, West should have ducked to keep communication with his partner.

But he distractedly won with his queen and played a third heart. Now Geary drove out the diamond ace and came home with an overtrick.
