Tackling our prep football preview section Prep football practices are underway at area high schools, and the Kane County Chronicle sports team has been busy preparing its annual prep football preview section, which will appear in papers Thursday.

I sat down with sports editor Kevin Druley this week to discuss this year’s prep football preview section. The following is an edited version of our conversation: Balcazar: What will readers find in the 2015 Kane County Chronicle prep football preview section?

Druley: Readers will find a good variety of content, from the usual meat-and-potatoes team previews, but we also have features and portraits and rosters and just really what we year to year feel is a comprehensive guide to the upcoming season.

Balcazar: Fantastic. The section’s “five players to watch” come from St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Geneva, Batavia and Kaneland this year. A nice geographic spread. What attributes set these players apart?

Druley: Some of it’s not necessarily the hype, but there’s

And a lot of that is predicated on maybe the offseason they had or they had a strong, stand-out 2014 season. So, it’s a combination of what they’ve done lately and what they’re expected to do. And a lot of that is from what we know from the past, but we also certainly get coaches’ feedback on that, and they’re helpful with helping us to determine who those players are.

Balcazar: For those who haven’t – or rarely – attend high school football games, can you describe what the atmosphere is like?

Druley: With apologies to Marcia Griffiths, I would say it’s electric. It’s a community event. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that it’s Americana, especially in the Midwest. I know, nationwide, football can be king, but especially here in the Midwest it seems like it’s definitely a community event, where it’s bringing out obviously the fans and the parents, but also various weeks you see the little mites from the youth organizations and things like that. So, it’s definitely a sight to behold, and whether

These creatures of the night are truly amazing Odd creatures roam our streets by night. Sidewalks, too.

And driveways, and front and back steps – especially those with lights.

With big eyes, and bellies to match, these beasts are hungry.

They’ll stop at nothing in their quest for prey.

But before we cause too much alarm, I should probably clarify a couple things. These animals roam by hopping – short, clunky, nonthreatening hops.

And the prey they seek? It’s mostly in the form of insects.

Yep, this week we’re taking a look at Anaxyrus americanus, the American toad. (I suppose now is as good a time as any to share how bummed I was when this genus name became the norm. For decades these guys were known as Bufo – the Latin word for toad.

It’s a great name that fits well; plus, it’s fun to say. The recent switch to Anaxyrus, a name coined in the 1800s, came about as a result of some molecular-level discoveries. The new name may have a physiological basis, but for me, toads will always be Bufos.)

At any rate, American toads are particularly prevalent in our area, probably because of the superb conditions we’ve created for them. Our assorted activities and ventures have made it so that standing water is pretty easy to find. And these guys have taken full advantage.

American toads are what I call “indiscriminate” breeders.

Whereas some amphibian species restrict their mating rituals to specific sorts of water bodies, such as ephemeral ponds, for toads, any patch of wetness will do. I’ve found toad eggs in retention ponds, roadside ditches, backyard water gardens, even flooded tire ruts. True, not every tadpole will survive to maturity, but enough do to make American toads our area’s most common amphibian.

GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto However, don’t mistake “common” for “boring.” Toads are anything but!

Well known for the bumps, or “warts,” that cover their skin, toads have two lumps in particular that are quite sizable and contain their most powerful defense. The bumps actually house the parotoid glands.

When disturbed, these organs will secrete a milky, bitter-tasting toxin that acts as a deterrent to certain predators.

Have you ever seen a dog or cat react after having an American toad in their mouth? It’s not pretty. Drooling, retching, pawing at the mouth ... these

are the outward signs. On the inside, their bodies are reacting to the introduction of cardiotoxic steroids that cause pain, swelling and an irritation of the stomach lining.

Before you get too worried, know the concentrations of these toxic compounds in American toads aren’t high enough to cause cardiac arrest.

Cane toads and Colorado River toads, yes. But they don’t live around here. Pet vs. toad encounters in our area just produce localized pain, along with discomfort that can last up to a week, depending on the dog or cat and how much toxin was ingested. Humans aren’t as likely as animals to put toads in our mouths, but we do occasionally pick them up. Always

‘SO MIRACULOUS’

Campton Hills woman is part of national effort to save monarchs

bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – On a recent summer day, with storm clouds threatening and mosquitoes on the attack, Janie Grillo arrived at Corron Farm in Campton Hills fully prepared.

She held a mesh toiletry carrier containing two monarch butterflies that had emerged from their chrysalises earlier that afternoon.

Grillo reached in and collected one on her finger. The butterfly hung on, fluttering its wings as she reached up and carefully transferred it to the low-hanging leaves of a tree at the historic farm. The 220acre Corron Farm is owned by Campton Township, as part of its commitment to preserving open space.

She did the same for the second one. Both will rest amid the leaves until they are ready to fly, Grillo said.

Call her the monarch whisperer. Or better yet, a monarch preservation warrior.

“They are addicting,” Grillo said of her devotion to the nation’s most iconic butterfly.

“I think it’s such an amazing process – to go from egg to caterpillar to butterfly is so miraculous, and to think that it is threatened.”

••• The Campton Hills resident has been protecting and nurturing monarchs since 2001 as part of Monarch Watch’s conservation initiative called Bring Back The Monarchs.

The black and orange butterfly is the only North American species that migrates about 3,100 miles from Canada to the United States to Mexico over four to five generations.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website, monarchs numbered about 1 billion in 1996, but have declined by 90 percent because of habitat destruction and herbicides that kill milkweed – the only plant its caterpillars will eat.

Then, as now, Grillo would tag migrating monarchs that stop to rest in Kane County to support the study of their migration to Mexico.

Her effort at helping preserve the species includes encouraging those with butterfly gardens to plant milkweed as a counter measure to its loss because of herbicides and roadside mowing, she said.

With a degree in biology and her work as a landscape designer, Grillo gives presentations on monarchs and how to create gardens for them. She also collects their eggs and caterpillars – she calls them cats – to further protect them from predators, trying to turn the tide and save the species from extinction.

Grillo keeps them in plastic containers with small holes punched in them for air, dubbing them “cat condos.” Each is marked with a yellow sticky note telling when and where each was found – from Corron Farm, her yard, her neighbors’ yards.

In 2010, she said she released between 500 and 600 monarchs.

This is significant, she said, because their mortality is 90 percent.

lo said. “They die from predators or lack of food or natural causes.”

Grillo said she does not dwell on these losses, although she knows of others who stopped harboring monarchs because the deaths were too traumatic.

“It’s so disappointing,” Grillo said. “Nature certainly can be hard.”

••• In addition to individuals planting milkweed in their home butterfly gardens, local governments have started to include milkweed in their landscaping, Grillo said.

Even the federal government has stepped in to support efforts to save the monarch, she said.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in February announced a cooperative agreement with the National Wildlife Federation and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to work together, along with Canada and Mexico, on monarch conservation, according to a statement on its website.

The collaboration is focused on planting native milkweeds and nectar plants, the primary food sources in breeding and migration habitats for the butterfly, according to the statement. The service also will fund $2 million for conservation projects this year

to restore and enhance more than 200,000 acres of habitat for monarchs also while supporting more than 750 schoolyard habitats and pollinator gardens.

Many of the projects will focus on the Interstate 35 corridor from Texas to Minnesota, areas that provide important spring and summer breeding habitats in the eastern population’s central flyway, according to the statement. The service’s website also urges the public to create an oasis in every backyard not only for monarchs but other pollinators – as well as planting milkweed along rights of way, along roadsides.

“My biggest hope is that people will understand how unique and how important it is to preserve this amazing migrating butterfly,” Grillo said.

“And that by helping preserve the monarchs, you’re helping lots of pollinators by creating natural habitats. We are so dependent on them. Monarchs are indicators of how healthy our environment is.”

Pam Erickson Otto, a naturalist who is the manager of nature programs and interpretive services at the St. Charles Park District’s Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, said these efforts and initiatives to save the monarch will support other pollinators, such as honey bees and other butterflies.

“The monarch has become a poster child through its own travails,” said Otto, who also writes a column for the Kane County Chronicle.

“It’s so ubiquitous that when, all of a sudden, word gets out that monarchs are disappearing, people who otherwise were not paying attention are actively looking for them,” Otto said. “It bodes well for other creatures, as well.”

••• After releasing her Corron Farm butterflies, Grillo gathered her “equipment” – a tote bag filled with large sealable plastic bags – and walked across Corron Road to the edge of a field filled with shoulder-high thistle and milkweed.

Grillo began checking the underside of milkweed leaves, looking for monarch eggs and caterpillars. Mosquitoes whined and cars zoomed past as a light rain began to fall, but nothing deterred Grillo as she searched.

“I once saw a big [caterpillar] eating, and I thought I’d pick him up on my way back,” Grillo said. “When I came back, a wasp was eating him. I don’t make that mistake again.”

And then she found it – a single tiny pearlescent egg of a monarch. She picked the leaf with the egg and put it safely into her sealable plastic bag to take home to her “cat” condo.

Racquetball reduction likely at Geneva Park District

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – There are plans in the works for the Geneva Park District’s flagship facility, the Sunset Racquetball and Fitness Center, to eliminate one of its two racquetball courts, leaving only one. That has upset some players, who are protesting the change.

Park district officials said the plan is to repurpose one of the courts as an additional exercise area because racquetball use is declining. The board will discuss the issue and vote at a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Sunset facility, 710 Western Ave., Geneva.

“Racquetball is trending down and down, to 23 percent per year on average,” Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte said of its racquetball court use.

“We feel very confident in our ability to accommodate present use on one court.”

During prime-time play from January to March, however, the usage is 51 percent, according to a memo Lambillotte sent to the park board. Lambillotte said

the meeting Monday is to discuss whether to move forward with renovating one court or to have both courts remain.

Most of the $20,000 renovation cost is for new fitness equipment, as other fitness center members expressed a need for additional fitness space, Lambillotte said.

“The fitness center has a need for additional exercise areas,” Lambillotte said. “We would like to put a TRX circuit in there and individualized exercise machines. … With [racquetball] trending the way it is, we can accommodate [it] with one court.”

But Geneva resident Larry Mayerhofer disputed usage is low and a single court would have enough prime-time availability to be sufficient for league, nonleague and casual play.

“Statistics don’t really tell the whole story,” said Mayerhofer, 65. “We admit that it [racquetball] is not as popular as it used to be, but it’s not just a place to work out. It’s a social setting, too.”

“One of our guys suggested a headline, ‘Old guys replaced by high-tech machines,’ ” Mayerhofer wrote in an email.

And that might be the problem, said Dr. Shannon Wright, president of the United States Racquetball Foundation, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization that promotes racquetball.

“Our goal is to ensure the future of racquetball,” Wright said. “It has really declined drastically since the late 1970s and 1980s.”

Wright, a physician who teaches at the University of Minnesota Medical School, said the organization was formed to regrow the sport “to some of its former glory.”

“I used to be a top professional player,” Wright said. “I took 20 years off to go to medical school, and when I came back – what is happening to this sport? No one promoted grassroots racquetball, and other activities pulled the attention of young people.”

“We are working on more school spirit this year,” she said.

She was a founding member of the Batavia Historical Society; historical preservation was very important to her and we children learned a great deal about historical architecture growing up in a Greek revival house that was built in 1852.

She also had a love for antiques and windmills. She was especially proud that Batavia was the center of windmill production in the 1800’s helping settle the West.

Salle is survived by her five children, Mark (Joan) Kruger of Springville, TN, Cobourn (Donald) Gogarn of Buchannan, TN, Brooke (Joan) Kruger of Aurora, IL, Wade (Jackie Nunez) Kruger of Lake Holiday, IL and Hannah Hartman of Batavia, IL; her nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; many other family and friends.

ELBURN – Classic cars slowly rolled down Route 47 on Friday night as part of the parade to kick off the Elburn Days festival, and one was blaring a more contemporary song, Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.”

Hearing that sound, DeKalb residents Dean and Karen Miller were grooving to the beat in their seats as they watched the parade go by. The Millers said they would never miss the annual parade and a trip to the festival – and Dean Miller said he previously had been part of the parade for a decade. They looked up and down the street, which was packed with smiling spectators, and they smiled, too.

“Everybody’s happy,” Karen Miller said.

Featuring dance groups, youth organizations, farm equipment and bands, the parade lasted about 90 minutes, with participants marching down Route 47 and into the area of Lions Park, which is where the festival will run through Sunday. Entrants included a bagpipe band, the annual appearance of Ronald McDonald and many representatives from Kaneland schools, including athletes, cheerleaders and pompom performers.

Simmons said the adaptive bike, made and donated by Freedom Concepts, is “one of what I consider to be the best adaptive bikes out there for children.”

Instead of being mass produced, the bikes are made one at a time, ensuring the bikes are best suited for a child’s needs, said Simmons.

Thanks to Project Mobility, Frankie Reich, 4, who had been disabled from the neck down – but now is able to move both arms and legs, with severe limitations – has an adaptive bike.

Reich’s father, Dave, said, “It makes [Frankie] extremely happy.”

Reich’s adaptive bike helps him participate more with able-bodied children, his father said. When Reich outgrows the bike, his dad said Project Mobility will help resize the bike and model to fit his son free of charge.

Simmons said Freedom Concepts has different models for adaptive bikes, and the model the child would receive through the contest “depends on what disability they have and what needs they have.”

available for both families and avid cyclists. Adaptive bikes will be available for those who need them. Participants can chose among 10-, 30-, 45- or 60-mile routes by following a map given to them at the bike ride.

The registration fee is $35, but “wounded warriors” can ride for free, if they contact Simmons, she said.

The St. Charles Fire Department hung funeral mourning bunting on Baker Memorial United Methodist Church as a sign of support to the church’s senior pastor, whose son was among the firefighters killed in a Washington wildfire this week. in initial attack operations.

One other truly remarkable feature of toads – in fact, most all frogs – is the way they take in water. I’ll give you a hint: It’s not through their mouths.

Amphibian skin in general is highly permeable; in fact, it absorbs oxygen. (The oils from our skin can seriously interfere with this process – which is one more great reason to keep handling of frogs and toads to a minimum.) But there is one region where the skin is not only permeable, but also criss-crossed with an elaborate network of capillaries.

This area, known as a seat patch, enables frogs and toads to absorb water at the end directly opposite from where

you’d think they’d “drink.”

Hard to imagine, isn’t it?

Especially given all those times we’ve seen Kermit the Frog sipping tea with his mouth.

But it’s true, and something to think about the next time you see a frog, or toad, sitting with its belly region pressed into a puddle.

There are lots of other neat things about toads – their acute eyesight, the role their eyes may play in the swallowing of prey, the way they periodically shed and consume their skin.

But the best way to gain an appreciation for this prevalent, nocturnal neighbor is to take time to observe one in action.

See how they track their prey? Notice how they gobble it up, even using a forelimb to stuff down the really big bugs?

Aren’t these creatures of the night truly amazing?

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles church is mourning the loss of its senior pastor’s son, who was among three firefighters killed in a wildfire in Washington state.

Baker Memorial United Methodist Church posted this message on Facebook: “We grieve the loss of Pastor Mary and Jim Zajac’s son, Andrew, while fighting wildfires in the state of Washington. We have no additional information at this time. Please keep them in your hearts and prayers.”

St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said the department’s ladder company hung black and purple funeral mourning bunting on the church Andrew Zajac Thursday evening “to show that certainly the entire community shares in their loss.”

The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest confirmed in a release Thursday Andrew Zajac, 26, was among the firefighters who died in a wildfire on Department of Natural Resources land near Twisp, Washington.

The other fallen firefighters were identified as Tom Zbyszewski, 20, and Richard Wheeler, 31. Daniel Lyon, 25, was injured and is being treated at a Seattle hospital, according to the release.

The family issued a statement, which read family members were “devastated to learn of the death of our beloved son and brother, Andrew Zajac.”

Mike Williams, forest supervisor at the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, described the incident as tragic.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of three of our forest service firefighters,” he said in a statement. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and fellow crew members of these brave firefighters.”

Fox River and Countryside fire district still seeking tax increase

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Officials of a fire district are preparing another appeal to voters to consider a tax levy increase.

The Geneva-based law firm Griffin William LLP is preparing revamped language for the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District’s tax levy increase request. It possibly could be used on the March 15 primary ballot, said Jim Gaffney, the district’s board president.

“We’re trying to make the wording understandable for the public within the confines of the law,” Gaffney said Thursday.

Board members at their next meeting Monday plan to review and discuss the language legal counsel have

prepared if it is ready by that time.

The public meeting will begin no earlier than 7 p.m.

Monday in the district’s Station 3, 34W500 Carl Lee Road, St. Charles, or immediately after the conclusion of a 6:30 p.m. special meeting if it runs long.

The district wants to propose that its current tax rate increase over time from about 28 cents – 28 cents per $100 of assessed valuation – to 51 cents, Gaffney said.

The increase still would leave the fire district with one of the lower rates in the area, he said.

Voters defeated the district’s previous rate hike request by a 3-1 margin in April, according to election records.

“If we don’t get the ref-

erendum passed in March, there’s going to be more cutbacks to the fire department,” Gaffney said.

The district has not replaced three full-time firefighter/paramedics who left to work elsewhere, leaving a total of 21 firefighters. Gaffney said the district also has had to move up a reserve fire engine to active status because it is deferring equipment replacement.

An approved referendum would allow the district to buy more equipment and pay its firefighters higher wages since they are paid less relative to other area districts, Gaffney said.

The district serves 25,000 residents across 38 square miles that include Wayne, Campton Hills and St. Charles Township.

OUR VIEW: THUMBS-UP/THUMBS-DOWN Thumbs-down St. Charles officials are considering whether to

allow video gaming.

If the city’s aldermen vote in favor of it, St. Charles would join a growing list of municipalities in Kane County that allow qualifying businesses to place video gaming machines in their establishments.

That is allowed in towns such as North Aurora, Sugar Grove, Elburn and Maple Park, as well as unincorporated areas of Kane County.

Video gaming has not been allowed in any of the Tri-Cities – Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles. If that changes, it would be disappointing. We long have stood against video gaming. It can be addictive. It preys on those who cannot afford it.

While the process has been moving forward in St. Charles, there has not yet been a vote. City staff will plan to have an ordinance draft for the Government Operations Committee meeting on Sept. 8. Aldermen on Monday decided the city needs “a straight up-and-down” vote on the issue, and there is some opposition.

“My point is, [under video gaming], we’re benefiting from people’s losses,” said Rita Payleitner, a St. Charles alderman.

Payleitner makes a great point, and others would be wise to strongly consider it. There is still time to keep the Tri-Cities free of video gaming.

Thumbs-up At many high schools, a homecoming parade is

an annual tradition, providing an opportunity for a community to gather with students, teachers and staff to celebrate.

That has been true at all public high schools in the Tri-Cities, but that hasn’t been the case at Kaneland High School.

This year, that will change. Kaneland will have a homecoming parade, which is set for Sept. 30 in Elburn.

That’s good news, and it’s something that’s long overdue. It did require some thought.

It’s not practical to stage a parade near the high school, which sits on Keslinger Road west of Route 47 and isn’t near residential areas.

Kaneland School District 302 brings in students from many communities, so there won’t be a permanent home for the parade. Instead, there will be a four-village rotation between Elburn, Kaneville, Maple Park and Sugar Grove. It’s a good solution.

Parade routes will need to be worked out, but there is time for that. What’s important is that those in the Kaneland community will be able to enjoy something that others can take for granted.

For those who have had to endure chants – such as “Where is Kaneland?” – at athletic events, it’s a chance to provide an answer.

The heroin emergency in the United States THE WASHINGTON POST Not even the federal government can solve the nation’s growing heroin epidemic on its own, but it could always do more. That’s probably the best way to think about the new anti-heroin initiative unveiled by the White House on Monday. A oneyear, $2.5 million plan to track the flow of drugs through the Northeastern states and other “high-intensity” regions certainly can’t hurt; but the White House isn’t pretending its new initiative will conquer the problem and nor should anyone else.

Two out of every 1,000 Americans were addicted to heroin in 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, double the rate in 2002. There were 8,200 heroin-related overdose deaths in 2013; the number of such deaths per 100,000 people nearly quadrupled between 2002 and 2013, the CDC reports.

These figures are especially troubling given that heroin abuse increased at a time when the U. S. made significant progress against so many other stubborn social ills – including drunken driving and teen pregnancy.

Even more frustrating,

the heroin epidemic is itself an unintended consequence of what had previously been thought to be a great medical advance: the rise of prescription opioid pain medications.

Massively prescribed, often for routine ailments rather than cancer or other excruciating diseases, these painkillers addicted hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom eventually turned to chemically similar, but cheaper, heroin. Prescription-opioid addicts are the highest-risk group for heroin addiction, according to the CDC, and controlling the flow of prescription opioids is, accordingly, the most important thing that government – federal and state – can do to prevent it.

One key program is the use of state-level electronic databases to track the dispensing of opioids; additional federal funds for these prescription drug monitoring programs were part of $133 million in new spending to curb opioid overprescription in President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2016 budget, and those dollars would probably do as much or more to fight heroin abuse than anything specifically targeted at heroin.

It would also help if the federal government could find

a way to speak with a single voice on this issue. In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration baffled many officials in heroin-ravaged states by approving a new opioid despite a negative recommendation from its own expert advisory panel. And on Aug. 13, just days before the White House rolled out its latest anti-heroin plan, the FDA approved the powerful opioid OxyContin for use in patients as young as 11.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, denounced this as a “reckless act.” The FDA noted, defensibly, the approval may actually inhibit overprescription because it provides more definitive guidance on dosing and efficacy to physicians who were already free to give opioids to young patients “off-label.” Nevertheless, Manchin was understandably worried the FDA did not appoint an advisory panel to screen the proposal and that its decision could be seen as a green light for wider pediatric use by doctors lacking the time or inclination to educate themselves on best practices.

The last thing this country needs is more conflict and confusion about how and when the gateway drugs for heroin enter the marketplace.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It is not the job of the government to get in the way of free enterprise and a law-abiding business owner who wants to sell a legal product. The method by which the product can be dispensed is a legitimate question, but ultimately driveup liquor windows are successful in many communities across the nation, and so clear-thinking leaders will recognize that this is a responsible way for communities to enhance sales tax revenue. We will get more than alcohol with this refreshing, pro-business action by our city leaders. We will get increased business activity, which is good for all citizens.

Good morning. Can someone please tell me why gas prices keep going up? Yes, I heard there is trouble at the refinery.

Not sure what, but I think someone probably sneezed. Barrels of oil are at an all-time low, and we have a surplus of fuel in our country and prices keep going up and up. Now why – when the barrels of oil dropped – [does it take] a lifetime for them to show up at the pump, and when there are so-called problems at the refinery, prices jump up, sometimes twice a day. Guess someone needs a new push, don’t you think?

Twenty years after Kull joined the Saints and 30 years after she took her first coaching position, you won’t find many who disagree.

The 2015 season hardly is a farewell tour for East’s longtime leader, but self-deprecating age jokes or not, it does offer a benchmark. Although Kull appears to smile at nearly every turn anyway, the testimony of her players and peers figures to keep her grinning even more.

“She’s so much fun to work with,” Saints junior outside hitter Kyla Augustine said.

“She’s always positive, and she’s just pushing us constantly to get better. Not only individually, but (to) work well together and as a team in general. So it helps us so much that she’s so positive and hands-on with us.”

Hawkins aspires to infuse the same energy in her play-

ers as Kull did when Hawkins suited up. That legacy is just one reason Hawkins knows the Saints will be a tough out for the seasoned North Stars this season.

“I’m sure coach Kull has evolved as a coach over time,” Hawkins said, “but she has always been a very strong competitor and she does an awesome job of instilling that in her players, which I think is very hard to teach. How do you teach a kid perseverance and grit? And she does that very well.”

Kull boasts ties to her other Tri-Cities coaching brethren, too. She served as an Indiana assistant in the early 1990s, several years before Geneva coach Annie Seitelman competed for the Hoosiers as a middle blocker.

A few years before coming to Indiana, Kull narrowly missed Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne – now in her 29th season leading the Bulldogs – at Champaign Central.

Continued from page 15 Kull, who hails from downstate, took over as Maroons coach in 1986, just after Trippi-Payne’s final season as an assistant, a position offered as a provision of Trippi-Payne’s studies at Illinois.

“You know, back then, girls were most enthusiastic about being a part of a program. To be a female and be competing, I think, was the total difference. It was a totally different motivational feat,” Kull said. “Now, I think, the girls accept the fact that they are, I believe, equal with the boys, so they feel that it’s not bad to be competing, to be winning, to be lifting, to be driving yourself to be the best you can be.

So I think that’s a huge difference from when I first started.” Traipsing down memory lane made Trippi-Payne smile about Kull, too.

“I knew her when she still had her maiden name (Miller),” Trippi-Payne said.

“She’s a competitor, she’s a great coach, and you can never count them out.”

In 2001, just less than three decades after the enactment of Title IX, Kull steered the Saints to her first state championship. She added an-

The proliferation of club volleyball and year-round play began taking hold around the time of the Saints’

first title under Kull, who started at the school when it still was St. Charles High.

She points to that enhancement as one of the key developments in her tenure.

“It’s just that competitive-

ness in volleyball that’s really all of a sudden hit,” Kull said.

If not from the stands as spectators, a majority of the current roster witnessed that Kull’s own intensity as mid-

dle school students.

Kull has been known for making the rounds throughout the East school system, taking an early pulse on upcoming talent while most importantly introducing herself.

“I’ve known her as a coach for my whole volleyball career,” Saints senior outside hitter Allie Watson said.

“She’s been a mentor to me. ... I’ve learned to get to know her coaching style, and that’s really helped me as a player, just being familiar with her and the girls on this team.”

Turning once more to the subject of empowerment, Kull, part of East’s physical education faculty, credited her husband, Jim, for her longevity.

Jim Kull, East’s director of bands, has consistently lent a supportive note to his wife’s coaching career, especially as the couple raised children.

“There’s so many female coaches that are giving up the sport because they can’t do it and be with their families,” Jennie Kull said.

“That’s been the best thing, is that Jim has been great with that.”

From there, Kull shot one more smile and started a recent Saints practice.

Today, I’ve decided to set a third goal for 2015. I want to umpire 300 games this year.

I’ve only umpired six games in August and none since Aug. 6, but because I’ve worked so many games already since March, I’m going to go for it.

If I were ever going to reach that holy grail of a number, this would be the year. Right now I’m sitting on 250.

I know it won’t be easy.

It might be near impossible.

Most fall leagues won’t start until September, and then quickly end in late October.

Most also only play games on weekends. I’ll need the rain to stay away and I’ll have to find enough games to work.

Plus, I have to balance my other commitments.

We’ll see what happens.

If I fall short, it’s not a big deal. My other two goals were most important. At worst, hopefully I can at least work more games than I weigh.

That goal seems more realistic, anyway.

I really had no idea of what it would be like to write a column for 20 straight weeks, and the opportunity to do it seemingly came out of left field, well, from sports editor Kevin Druley.

So, if you’ve enjoyed reading what I’ve written this year, you can thank him for recognizing that I’d have some interesting stories to share while also providing unique perspective about a sport most readers have played and continue to be

involved in as coaches, parents, grandparents and fans.

I also want to thank everyone who shared their stories with me as well as the many who sent me an email or told me in person how they’ve really enjoyed the column.

Opening night of the high school football season is less than a week away, so it’s time to replace the cowhide with the pigskin, and time for me to put my pen into hibernation until next spring.

Or, until something crazy happens in the MLB playoffs.

So if we have something similar to A.J. Pierzynski’s infamous non-strikeout for the White Sox, the Jeffrey Maier incident, a controversial infield fly call (such as the one a few years ago in the wild card game between Atlanta and St. Louis) or if someone else in a green turtleneck and headphones over his Cubs cap reaches and deflects a ball destined for Chris Coghlan or Kyle Schwarber in left field, I’m hopeful to chime in with a special edition of Quill. If not, stick a fork in me until spring.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes about baseball from the late former MLB commissioner, A. Bartlett Giamatti: “Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.”

Hitting .300, striking out less, driving in more runs, etc., are some of the common goals for a ballplayer.

As for an umpire, 300 isn’t something I thought about, until now, but let me backtrack a bit.

I set two goals as an umpire this year and believe I accomplished both of them.

The first one was to work as many high school games as possible. Since I lost my full-time job, I finally had an opportunity to work a lot of high school games, which was extremely difficult to do when you have a typical 9-to5 gig and the games start at 4 or 4:30 p.m.

Losing my job wasn’t a blessing, but getting to umpire close to 50 high school games was one in the disguise of my blue uniform.

My second goal was to get better as an umpire. I attended multiple clinics in the offseason, continued to read the rulebooks and case books throughout the season, really focused on technique and timing and asked for feedback from my colleagues.

Did I get better as an umpire? I think so, but I’m sure there’s some coach or player out there who thinks I’m still the worst umpire of all time.

GENEVA – With 18 games left and no off days remaining in the regular season, the Cougars have hit the final stretch to the playoffs.

With a three-game division lead entering Friday’s Midwest League weekend series opener with Quad Cities, the Cougars are right where they want to be. One thing has sure been key to their success, especially with lead in late game situations, and that’s the back end of the bullpen.

On Aug. 16, left-handed closer Zac Curtis set the Cougars record for most saves in a season with 28. He called the record Zac Curtis “humbling” and “more of a team record than (an) individual one,” but has not pitched since that date. He hasn’t been called into a save opportunity, which has provided some much-needed rest.

“You just have to be ready during a stretch like this,” Curtis said. “It’s on us to keep our bodies fresh and stay ready to go. We know going into games if we could be called on, based on our previous workload, but it’s crunch time.”

Curtis talked about the parent Arizona Diamondbacks organization’s policy of giving pitchers two days off if they throw on back-to-back days.

He didn’t say he needed it, and joked that hopefully once the team gets into the playoffs, “maybe we can go back-toback-to-back if needed.”

But that points the finger at both manager Mark Grudzielanek and pitching coach Doug Bochtler. Now in his fifth year in the Diamondbacks organization, Bochtler meets with Grudzielanek each day after emailing him the night before with information such as who’s available and how many days of rest everyone has had.

The two try to go over what they envision happening in certain situations in that day’s

game and try to come up with a game plan.

“That’s the hardest part, though,” Bochtler said. “Trying to stick to your game plan and not reacting to the situation of the game. You’d like to use the same guys that have been pitching well, but sometimes they’re not available and that’s why developing that game plan before the game and sticking to it is key.”

Bochtler, no doubt, gave credit to Curtis’ ability to nail down saves when called on, but said he wouldn’t be in the position he’s in without fellow relievers Jency Solis and Luis Ramirez locking down the seventh and eighth innings to set the table. No matter how much of a game plan both Bochtler and Grudzielanek develop, there are a few pitchers that really may never know their role.

Right-hander Nick Baker has been thrust in several roles for the Cougars this season.

Baker (10-1, 2.26 ERA) has appeared in 26 games, three of which have been starts.

He started two games after a Nick Baker rainout, as well as one in which he didn’t find out he’d be playing until hours before first pitch.

“We had a guy get called up and they told me four hours before the game, ‘Hey, you’re starting today,’ ” Baker said. “I was like, ‘All right, let’s do this.’

So my role is definitely different than most, but I’ve gotten better with it just talking to some guys down in the bullpen that are experts with it. I’ve tried to not get worked up or worried about too much, and whenever they tell me they need me to pitch, I go out there and do the best I can.”

The success of the back end of the bullpen this season has allowed every other pitcher on the team to pitch with confidence, something everyone around the clubhouse hopes can continue and lead the group to another Midwest League championship.

Marmion recently hired Frank Chapman as its new baseball coach. Chapman takes over for Dave Rakow, who was in charge of the Cadets baseball program the past 10 years. The first-year coach will have a talented group, but a challenging season awaits as Marmion recently joined the Chicago Catholic League.

Chapman, a Geneva graduate, caught up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey for the latest edition of the Weekend Chitchat to discuss his excitement about taking over at Marmion and his plans as coach. Here’s an edited transcript:

Talk a little about your excitement getting this opportunity.

It’s a great opportunity to get back to Marmion. I was an assistant coach there in 2011.

From how special the place is and to what the monks do to the academics and commitment to the athletic program and phenomenal facilities, it felt like home and where I wanted to be.

What was it about this position that excited you?

It’s been my goal ever since leaving in 2011 to get back to Marmion and take over that program one day. I’m extremely happy and very thankful to everyone who helped in giving me this opportunity.

I know you just took over, but how much do you know about the group you’ll be coaching?

Well, coach Rakow did a phenomenal job. There were several Division I talents that came from his teams. I helped him this summer with camps and there is a lot of talent coming back. There is a good, core group that’s hungry and excited to get out there. Moving over to the Chicago Catholic League, it’s an exciting time for this program.

Talk about joining the Chicago Catholic League.

Weekend Chit-chat with MARMION BASEBALL FRANK CHAPMAN It’s the best baseball league in the state, in my opinion.

You see D-I talent day in and day out. You look at the Class 3A and 4A teams that have gone down state or who have won state, and you can get that there are a few, if not several teams from the CCL. As a coach and as a player, you are excited to get into a conference like that.

How difficult will it be with this year being the school’s first year as a member of the CCL?

It’s going to be tough, there’s no doubt. But we want to play the best talent out there. Teams like St. Rita, Providence Catholic. ... As a player, you want to play the best players, and as a coach, I’m excited to coach against the best coaches out there. If you want to go to the next level and create and establish a recognized, hard-nosed program, you have to play those teams.

What kind of plans do you have from now until you get going in the spring?

The big thing is the weight room. Having been in other programs (most recently Freeport), as well as spending some time coaching in Las Vegas, where they play baseball year-round, the difference is time spent in the weight room.

With the kids we are going to see in the CCL every day, that’s very important. But also building that camaraderie, as well as getting that physical edge will put us where we want to be.

ST. CHARLES – Pheasant Run Golf Course will host the 15th annual Midwestern Amputee Golf Association scramble and tournament from Sept. 11 to 13.

Sunday rounds involve only the amputee golfers.

The last thought crossing most people’s minds as the summer heat starts to wane is “time to start planting.”

Yet September is a great time to make changes to the garden.

While a wide selection of perennial nursery stock may not be available this time of year, you can use the time to alter your current garden, move an unhappy plant or even divide and share plants. The best part is that there is no guessing as to how the garden will look. You already know since the plants have yet to fade. Spacing and design issues are made easier when you can see it all and are more familiar with what is in the garden.

Late September is the most suitable time to move spring and summer flowering plants. (Never disturb a plant that is blooming – it will be most

LEARNING TO GROW Jim Stendler stressed then.) Plants are naturally preparing for dormancy by storing available nutrients deep into their root systems. This inward flow means they are not trying to grow outward and will experience less shock when moved.

When plants reverse the process in spring, they will already be in their spot when they start to generate new roots. These new, undisturbed, roots can then better support the plant in spring, as compared to if they were severed with a spring transplanting.

As an added benefit to the garden-

er, the soil is drier and generally much easier to work with in fall. Plus, you will not have to look at a plant with floppy or sickly foliage for months; it will all be gone soon enough.

The same rules of transplanting and dividing apply. Do not start until the weather is consistently below 80 degrees, and more often in the 50s and 60s. Be sure to take a wide and deep enough root ball, retaining as much soil as possible. The same generosity applies to the new location, dig a large enough hole and ensure the surrounding soil is loose.

Most perennials do not need any additional organic matter or fertilizer provided the soil is healthy, but some more delicate plants, like roses, will gladly accept extra care.

Division is straightforward. Simply

slice the root ball into pieces using a sharp shovel or knife and then plant.

These rules also apply for shrubs, bulbs and even pieces of sod.

While transplanting and rearranging the garden may not have been on your fall to-do list, take a moment to check out the garden again.

Having spent all summer working in the yard, you will approach the design with a set of seasoned eyes.

Months from now, you will be rewarded with fresh growth and a new canvas to let your ideas come to life.

Science adventure film to feature U.S. Rep. Bill Foster

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – As someone who wants to be a director someday, Priya Giddens-White, 13, of Chicago, was gaining some valuable experience on Friday as she helped shoot a scene for the upcoming movie “Traveling Without Moving,” a high-tech, science adventure film based on real quantum physics and the science of wormholes.

“I’ve learned a lot,” she said. “This has given me insights.”

As part of the shoot, Priya interviewed U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville. Foster is a scientist who worked at Fermi National Laboratory in Batavia for more than 20 years and was part of the team that discovered the top quark, the heaviest known form of matter.

The interview took place at the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School based at Aurora University. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The school serves students in third through eighth grades in the East Aurora, Indian Prairie, West Aurora and Batavia school districts.

Foster said he was happy to be part of the film.

“This is sort of a backdoor way to get young kids interested in STEM,” Foster said. “They’re naturally very interested in movies, and so this a movie about a scientific subject. You get them interested really in two ways. First, the scientific nature of the subject. It’s a film about wormholes and faster-than-light travel. Secondly, when they are present on the set, they get to operate as a team, and they get to see what it’s like to operate as a team.”

“Traveling Without Moving” is set for release in spring 2016.

WEEKEND LIFE BRIEF Storytelling, folk music festival set

GENEVA – In September, the 39th annual Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival will hit downtown Geneva.

The festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7.

Thirty acts will be dispersed between eight stages at the 13-acre Island Park.

The festival will feature folk music and dance, storytelling, artist exhibitions, activities for children and food vendors.

On Sunday, The Old-Time Community Barn Dance will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and “Ghost Stories” will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the main music stage.

Dark circles under the eyes have multiple causes Dear Doctor K: I have dark circles and bags under my eyes.

Does this mean I’m not getting enough sleep?

Dear Reader: Lack of sleep probably has nothing to do with the dark circles and bags under your eyes. In fact, getting too much sleep is more likely than too little to cause this appearance. That’s because when you’re sitting or standing up, gravity tends to pull excess fluid in your body downward toward and into your belly and legs.

Conversely, if you have been lying flat in bed for a long time, fluid in your body tends to flow toward your face. It accumulates in the loose skin below your eyes.

Lying down also makes the veins under the eyes widen, which darkens the appearance of the skin even more.

Here are some other reasons why your eyes might be darker and puffier than usual: • You’re getting older. As you age, the skin around the eye gets thinner and looser. This allows fluid to collect, causing a puffy appearance. Veins under the skin can create a dark appearance.

• You have allergies or nasal congestion. The veins under the eyes drain into the nose. Na-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff sal congestion or allergies can block this drainage, causing the veins to widen. Dark circles are so common with allergies that they’re sometimes called “allergic shiners.”

• You’re retaining fluid. Anything that causes fluid retention, such as premenstrual bloating or excessive salt intake, could increase puffiness around the eyes.

• You have a medication side effect. If your puffy eyes started right after you began a new medication, the drug might be the cause.

Many home remedies claim to get rid of dark circles and bags. They act as astringents, causing the loose skin beneath your eyes to tighten. These home remedies include putting any of the following on your eyes: wet, cool tea bags; cucumber slices; or cotton balls dipped in rose water.

None of these have been scientifically proven. On the other hand, they won’t cause any harm.

Other treatments make more

sense to me. Again, there are no rigorous scientific studies to support (or refute) them. But they are good ideas even if you’re not bothered by puffy eyes and dark circles. They include: • Getting unstuffed. Treating a sinus problem or allergies may improve how you look.

• Limiting salt intake. This might reduce fluid retention.

• Using sunscreen. The delicate skin under the eye is particularly vulnerable to the sun’s rays.

Makeup and various creams and ointments can also help. If you’re really bothered by your appearance, cosmetic surgeries, including bleaching and laser treatments, are an option.

I’m not saying that insufficient sleep, or poor quality sleep, won’t affect your appearance.

We all recognize the “look” of exhaustion. Facial expressions are less animated, more sluggish.

The mouth and cheeks sag. You become pale. But dark circles and bags under your eyes generally have other causes.

Are you not aware that all states have a limit on the amount of alcohol that can be consumed to still be a safe driver?

– Steve, Springfield Dear Steve: When I said never ride with a driver who has consumed alcohol, I meant what I said. Even one beer or glass of wine affects the driver’s ability to some degree. It’s not worth the risk, even if the risk is slight.

Please read the following letter. I don’t know how much alcohol the driver had consumed, but it’s obvious that he thought he knew what he was doing.

Last week I went to the funeral of the sweetest, dearest, best friend a girl could ever have. She was riding in a car with her boyfriend, who had been drinking. They were coming home from a party at 1 a.m. when the car went off the road and struck a tree. My friend was killed instantly; her boyfriend survived, though he was severely injured. An alcohol test showed that he had been drinking, but was not legally drunk.

My girlfriend and I had discussed not riding with a driver who had been drinking. We both promised we would never take that risk. It’s obvious she didn’t keep her promise and she paid the supreme price. She lost her life.

Parents have a legal obligation to feed, provide shelter, clothe and protect you until you are 18, unless the relationship is altered by unusual circumstances. They have the right to make decisions regarding your care and control, education, health, religion, residence and associates (people you hang around with). Legally, they cannot kick you out on the street – your stepfather is bluffing.

Friedrich von Schlegel, a German writer and critic who died in 1829, said: “A critic is a reader who ruminates. Thus, he should have more than one stomach.”

He was also a comedian, apparently. A top bridge player needs to be a reader of both the bidding – his side’s and the opponents’ – and the cards played.

In this deal, the card-reading starts at the first trick. How should South plan the play in four spades after West leads the heart nine?

North’s two no-trump was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, showing at least game values with four or more spades and, typically, no singleton or void (else North would have made a splinter bid).

South’s four-spade rebid was his weakest action.

There is a risk that declarer will lose one spade, two hearts and one club. But what does the heart nine signify?

It is top of nothing. East must have the heart ace-jack. If that is so, declarer can freeze the suit momentarily by playing dummy’s queen. East wins with the ace, but cannot return a heart without conceding a trick in the suit. South wins East’s diamond-queen shift with his ace, draws two rounds of trumps, then drives out the club ace.

This establishes a discard for his heart loser.

Note that if declarer plays the heart 10 at trick one, he should go down. East covers with his jack to drive out South’s king.

Then, when West gets in with his club ace, a second heart lead gives the defenders two tricks in the suit, along with the spade queen and club ace.
