The sounds of giggling girls – mixed with the rhythms of various tunes – engulfed the Bell Graham Elementary School gym and led me to the site of interest.

More than 100 students were broken into groups by grade and were twirling, strutting and leaping with huge smiles across their faces.

The annual dance clinic hosted at the school was the 15th one put on by the St. Charles North drill

team.

With this year’s music theme being Hollywood, one speaker blared “Footloose,” while another released the recent “Let it Go” from the movie “Frozen.”

Happiness and confidence radiated from the youthful students as they followed the high school dancer’s choreography step by step.

From freeze dance to dance

routines, all participants seemed joyous in the simple opportunity to bust a move.

I saw no timid side glances or lack of effort, despite the varying abilities of the young dancers.

Energy lawsuit seeks 400 ratepayers to create a class action

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Nearly 100 people turned out Thursday to a meeting called by Batavia businessman Joe Marconi, seeking plaintiffs for a class action lawsuit over the city’s investment in downstate Prairie State Energy Campus. Marconi filed suit this week in Kane County Circuit Court. But he and attorneys Michael Childress and Michael Duffy and other advocates encouraged Batavia ratepayers to consider signing onto the suit so a judge will be encouraged to certify it as a class.

Being a class means relief can be sought for all the city’s ratepayers, attorneys said.

Batavia resident Sylvia Keppel said when the city signed on for electricity and part ownership with Prairie State in

2007, ratepayers were promised cheap, clean reliable energy.

“None of this has been realized,” Keppel said. “As our electric bills increased and complaints were brought to the city, the city’s response has been, ‘Our attorneys have looked into it. It’s an ironclad contract. There is nothing more we can do.’

“That was not good enough for Joe Marconi,” Keppel said.

“Joe does not have 30 years to wait for things to get better. … We were in a big mess and what we needed was class action lawsuit.”

Duffy said the 137-page lawsuit is aimed at consultants that Batavia officials relied on to tell them what power would cost.

“Promises that were not kept. Promises that were not delivered,” Duffy said. “Not

only in terms of development but also in the way things were constructed and the way power was delivered.”

Consultants named in the lawsuit are the ones from whom money damages are being sought on behalf of Batavia ratepayers in terms of what they have overpaid so far, and what they will be calculated to overpay over the next 28 years, Duffy said. Batavia is not named as a defendant but as respondents in discovery, Duffy said, explaining in a civil case, he has six months to decide whether the city would be added as a defendant.

“We are not seeking money damages [from Batavia] but what we are seeking is the truth,” Duffy said. “We intend to ask for agreements, contracts, correspondence, emails. … We understand that there are

With 400 or so people signing on, a local judge would be

inclined to certify it as a class, Childress said. Signing on to a class action does not put anyone at risk and the attorneys only get paid if there is a judgment in their favor.

“There is strength in numbers and numbers speak,” Childress said.

Betsy Zinser of Batavia, an activist credited with providing lawyers with her research on Prairie State, said she was signing on and encouraged others to do so, as well.

“If businesses leave Batavia, those power costs have to be split among all of us,” Zinser said. “Our burden is not just what we carry today, but ramifications of when companies leave.”

The district contended that there had been additional costs in connection to the remediation that the agency did not cover, and therefore the district should not have to give the money to the agency, Schlomann said.

The agency also sought payment for additional legal costs associated with its lawsuit, but that was denied in the ruling.

“Indications are that [the agency] might appeal based on the legal costs,” Schlomann said. “If that’s the case ... more than likely we would cross-appeal.”

The agency has 30 days from the July 31 ruling to file

an appeal. The settlement will be paid out of the district’s tort fund, which is directly set up to help pay for its legal expenses, Schlomann said.

“It won’t affect our expenditures for this year’s district budget,” Schlomann said of the settlement.

After testing in 2001 showed St. East had a mold problem, the district closed the building for 18 months and spent more than $29 million to remove the mold. Some of the personal injury lawsuits in connection to the mold eventually were condensed into one suit, which included a settlement of less than $100,000 to six defendants, Schlomann told the Kane County Chronicle in 2007.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District 303 Board this month approved a six-figure settlement in a lawsuit tied to the 2001 mold discovery at St. Charles East High School.

School board members on Aug. 11 voted, 7-0, in favor of paying the Illinois School District Agency $660,000, plus court fees and interest. The members made a motion on the settlement issue after an executive session lasting less than 45 minutes.

The $660,000 settlement is in accordance with a July 31 ruling in Cook County Circuit

Court on a lawsuit filed against the district by the agency, according to the board’s motion on the payment. The Illinois School District Agency was one of the district’s insurance carriers at the time mold was found at St. Charles East, District Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

The ruling was in favor of the agency, which sought to obtain the roughly $660,000 the district collected from its other previous insurance carriers.

The court fees and interest that were part of the ruling likely will amount to about an additional $3,000, Schlomann said.

THE HIGHLIGHTS Hatcher, Schmitz reflect on their state legislative careers

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Republican State Rep. Kay Hatcher was in her Yorkville district office this week signing notes of congratulations to constituents and others who recently have been featured in newspaper stories.

“It is a good way to remind people they are important,” said Hatcher, as she gets ready to leave the state legislature after serving the 50th District since 2009.

Her last day is Jan. 14.

Both Hatcher and State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, who also is leaving the state legislature in January, said they have tried during their legislative careers to always put the interests of the people first. Schmitz, who represents the 65th District, first was elected to the House in 1999.

Hatcher and Schmitz represent a significant chunk of Kane County. The 50th District covers much of southwest Kane County and northern Kendall County, including Sugar Grove, Elburn, Campton Hills and Yorkville, as well as portions of St. Charles, Batavia, North Aurora, Aurora, Montgomery and Oswego.

The 65th District represents parts of Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Campton Hills, Plato Center, South Elgin, Hampshire and Huntley.

“This is a microcosm of America here,” Hatcher said.

“I have both gravel roads and superhighways in my district.”

In looking back at what he has done in his legislative career, Schmitz noted most of his accomplishments have involved “sticks and bricks.”

That included paving the way for the transfer of hundreds of acres of land about 12 years ago from the Illinois

“It took several years to

do,” Schmitz said. “It was the last bill of the night of my very first session. That’s where [the St. Charles Park

District] now have the water park, and all the soccer fields.

The park district’s long-term planning was to acquire all

that land.”

Schmitz said a lot of his bills were constituent driven, such as a bill requiring mandatory car booster seats for kids.

The bill failed the first time.

“We had a lot of education to do,” he said. “We had a lot of people opposed to it.”

Schmitz ran for the state legislature on the issue that people should have the right to carry concealed weapons.

On Jan. 1, people in Illinois for the first time were allowed to apply for the ability to carry guns in a concealed fashion.

Illinois was the last state to allow concealed carry.

“There were only a handful of states at the time that had it,” Schmitz said. “I didn’t understand the objections to it.”

Hatcher’s first vote in the House was to impeach thenGov. Rod Blagojevich, who is serving an 18-year jail sentence for 18 counts of political corruption, including trying to sell Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.

“I should have known what the next six years would be like,” Hatcher said with a laugh.

In crafting legislation, Hatcher said she has turned to the needs of her constituents. For example, after visiting with a local farmer, she introduced a bill protecting farmers’ pastures from deer herds.

Another bill she co-sponsored was designed to protect funerals of military personnel from hate groups, such as the Westboro Baptist Church.

Hatcher said the idea for the bill came from a Northern Illinois University class.

Deadlines near for assessment complaints

Deadlines for some communities, including Sugar Grove and Blackberry townships, have already passed while deadlines for others, such as St. Charles, Campton and Geneva townships, are days away.

Kaneville Township residents have the latest filing deadline, Sept. 22.

The assessments will affect taxes to be paid in 2015.

S u p e r v i s o r o f A s s e s sments Mark Armstrong told a Kane County Board committee on Thursday this year’s final filing deadline is 140 days earlier than when he took office eight years ago.

At that time, he said, the 2006 filing date extended to Feb. 9, 2007.

The timing of the deadlines is important because it can affect other components of the tax-year cycle, including when the tax bills are issued, Armstrong said.

“We don’t ever want to be late,” he said, citing the financial impact late tax bills have on the taxing bodies that rely on timely payments.

Additionally, he said, earlier deadlines for assessment complaints prevent Board of Review hearings from being scheduled around such holidays as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Board of Review hearings are held in Building C on the Kane County Government Center campus, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. They cannot be rescheduled, Arm-

strong said.

Complaint forms and instructions are available at the assessor’s website, www. kanecountyassessments.org.

Armstrong said taxpayers are encouraged to discuss their assessments with the township assessor before filing a complaint.

These discussions often can resolve the issue and eliminate the need for a complaint, he said.

Those wanting to learn more about property taxes are welcome to attend Armstrong’s next workshop on the topic.

It is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 2 in the auditorium of Building A of the government center.

The presentation typically lasts about an hour and 15 minutes, but Armstrong said he stays until all questions are answered.

Work to begin on two St. Charles parking garages ST. CHARLES – Beginning Monday concrete maintenance and repairs, sealant replacements and miscellaneous preventative maintenance work will begin on St. Charles’ two parking garages. Work will start first on the westside parking deck at Illinois and First streets. Once finished there, maintenance to the eastside garage on Third and Walnut avenues will begin. GENEVA – Events held on county property soon might be a way Kane County promotes its initiatives.

County Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, suggested the advertising possibility Thursday as the Administration Committee considered event requests for the Kane County Courthouse and the Kane County Government Center.

“It’s an opportunity for us,” he said.

Kane Kares, Fit for Kids, recycling events and animal adoption through Animal Control are examples of what board members said could be promoted.

Operations Staff Executive Don Biggs said a message sign could be installed at the government center, which would cost about $30,000.

Lewis said that’s not what he had in mind.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, proposed involving Rick Nagel, a contract employee who runs Kane County Connects.

Kane County Connects is intended to engage residents with county government and provide them with information, such as road closures.

Its online presence includes a WordPress site, an e-newsletter and accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

The county hasn’t committed Kane County Connects as an online-only entity, Frasz said. Information about upcoming events at county sites could be forwarded to Nagel as they’re approved, he said, adding Nagel could talk with department heads about possible promotions. Lewis agreed to talk with Nagel.

The committee did not express concerns about the Fox Valley Folk Festival and the Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon using county property.

POLICE REPORTS • A wheel and tire valued at $450 was reported stolen Friday, Aug. 15, from Lou’s Jeep, 602 E. State St. According to police reports, the theft was from the front passenger side of one of the business’s vehicles, and found still up on a jack.

• A 2000 Chevy Monte Carlo was reported vandalized Thursday, Aug. 14, while in the parking lot of Home Depot, 2111 S. Randall Road. The driver’s side rear quarter panel was keyed and the passenger side front quarter panel was dented, causing $750 in damages.

• A residential burglary was reported Thursday, Aug. 14, of a house in the 1400 block of South Street. According to police reports, the owner found a broken window and numerous items out of place and strewn on the floor with drawers pulled out.

• Obscene graffiti directed at police was reported Thursday, Aug. 14, on the west wall of Western Avenue School, 1500 Western Ave. According to police reports, a can of white spray paint found at the scene will be processed for fingerprints.

• Jeffrey J. Peterson, 30, of the 300 block of Republic Road, Batavia, was charged Tuesday, Aug. 12, with retail theft of $199 cordless drill from Ace, 617 W. State St. • Melissa L. Geneva • A 2013 Volkswagon Jetta was reported vandalized Wednesday, Aug. 20, while it was parked in the lot at Johnson Controls, 300 S. Glengarry Road. According to police reports, the car was scratched from front to back on the passenger side causing $865 in damages.

• Ernest R. Nishi, 40, of the 2200 block of Vanderbilt Drive, Geneva, was charged Monday, Aug. 18, with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery. According to police reports, the incident arose from an argument over money for school supplies for his two children. The argument escalated and involved both Nishi and the victim throwing toilet paper rolls at each other, as well as the victim being pushed to the ground on her surgically repaired back, according to police reports.

• Two street signs and metal posts were found damaged Sunday, Aug. 17, involving signs and posts for the intersections of Blackman and Miller roads and Berkshire Drive and Blackman Road. According to police reports, the post and sign replacement cost for each is $300.

• Tabitha L. Mitchell, 24, of the 2400 block of Lincoln Court, Aurora, was charged Monday, Aug. 18, with driving under the influence, speeding and improper lane use.

• A mailbox valued at $150 was reported knocked off its post Monday, Aug. 18, in the 0-50 block of Bedford Lane.

GENEVA – One by one, five members of the Geneva Public Library’s Night Writers group took a turn in the spotlight last week at the group’s first public event at The Little Traveler in downtown Geneva.

Nancy Hanna, Rick Holinger, Bruce Steinberg, Kimberly Gotches and Robert Weisz shared their works that ranged from a trip to a spa, life in Geneva, the story behind a family Christmas tree and a woman’s memory of when the Nazis rolled through her farming village in Luxembourg.

Holinger writes a column that appears in the Kane County Chronicle.

A crowd packed a room at The Little Traveler for the event, A Literary Evening of Writers and Wine, which included wine tasting and tips from a wine expert.

Gotches, the Geneva library’s public relations and adult program associate, said such public events are unusual for library reading groups.

It provided a taste of what the group offers and a glimpse at writing groups in general.

Gotches said the Night Writers group has between 12 and 18 members. It meets at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The next meeting is Tuesday.

It should act as a reminder, too, that the Islamic State began as al-Qaida in Iraq and differs from Pearl’s killers only in tactics.

Both proclaimed killings of American journalists were acts of propaganda designed to shock. The leaders of Islamic State aren’t naïve enough to believe that Foley’s death will persuade the U.S. to end its airstrikes against the group. No more did al-Qaida’s self-described 9/11 architect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed expect the U.S. would meet the demand, made on the video recording in which he beheaded Pearl, to release all prisoners from Guantana-

At some point these people return home, unless killed or arrested. They will return brainwashed and brutalized.

Both al-Qaida and Islamic State are best understood as nihilist organizations that target anyone who doesn’t share their inchoate ideology, rooted in a warped interpretation of fundamentalist Sunni Islam: their enemies range from moderate Sunnis, to Shiites, Christians, Kurds, minority religious groups such as the Yazidi – and, of course, the West.

As ever, success is the best recruiter. Because, until recently, Syrian President Bashar Assad and Islamic State left each other alone, focusing instead on taking territory from

more moderate Sunni rebels in Syria, Islamic State thrived there. Now it has seized about a third of Iraq and, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, recruited 6,300 new fighters, about 1,300 of them foreign, in July alone. That raises their total to about 50,000 from 15,000 a year ago, the Observatory said.

That’s a higher estimate than those of most Western analysts, but the trend is clear. Also important is that this membership boost occurred before the United States launched airstrikes, so it was not in response to Western involvement.

The Islamic State differs from al-Qaida in the priority it gives to building a Caliphate at the heart of the Middle East, rather than attacking the West.

Yet this is a matter of priorities only: The ideology and methods are shared and when Islamic State fighters go home, it defies experience and logic to

believe they won’t continue the fight there – one returnee already attacked a synagogue in Belgium.

The question for President Barack Obama and other Western leaders isn’t whether to fight the Islamic State, but when. Should it be now, when the group is not yet entrenched in Iraq, and when Assad has begun to move against it in Syria? Or will it be once its fighters have established themselves in Iraq and Syria and move on to Jordan, as they moved on the Kurds? If they were to succeed in Jordan, why not the Gulf states, where they already recruit and solicit donations? In Iraq and beyond, the nightmare prospect is of an al-Qaida that controls petro-states and enjoys the funds, space and leisure to train jihadists from around the world.

Missed playoff run fuels Krusz Bulldogs offensive lineman celebrated title from sidelines

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Mitch Krusz speaks in certainties about the knee injury that kept him from completing the best season in Batavia football history.

He’s equally sure his rehab prepared him for his part of the Bulldogs’ Class 6A state title defense, which begins when Oswego visits one week from tonight.

“With the amount of work I’ve put into this,” Krusz said, “there’s no doubt in my mind I’m 100 percent right now.”

Batavia’s senior right guard still spends time at Performance Clinics in Batavia and Ethos360 in North Aurora, the facilities that saw him sweat through recovery from a torn ACL and partially torn

MCL in his left knee.

In some respects, pushing through early workouts proved far less strenuous than watching his teammates from the sidelines after suffering the injury during a Week 7 win at St. Charles North.

Seven weeks later, Batavia avenged its lone regular-season loss and defeated Richards, 34-14, for the state championship in DeKalb. Standing on the sidelines but not in full gear, Krusz felt like part of the bedlam but still knew something was missing.

“It was the hardest thing I ever had to do,” he said.

“I mean, it was always my dream to win state, and it was really hard being on the sidelines. One of the hardest things. It’s really motivated me to where I am today.”

That resolve only figures to fuel the Bulldogs after graduating much of their offensive skill positions.

There’s plenty in stock on an experienced front five.

Krusz and center Patrick Gamble are among Batavia’s team captains, and return as starters alongside classmates Zach Tate (left tackle) and Jack Breshears (right tackle).

“That’s always a good way to start out, especially when you’ve got young skill,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said. “Give those guys a chance to grow knowing that they’re going to be protected, there’s going to be holes to run through.”

Linemates have lauded Krusz’s work ethic, knowing it stabilizes a unit that helped Batavia to program records in points (594), first downs

(314) and total offensive yards (5,769) in 2013.

“We’re just looking really solid all the way around,” Gamble said. “Things are coming together, and it’s been a lot of fun.”

Naturally, Krusz is smiling as he again basks in brotherhood with teammates and friends he’s grown up with.

The journey back began with a fateful outside running play against North last Oct. 11.

With Krusz pulling on the play, a defensive back blocked low and locked onto Krusz’s ankle in the open field.

An MRI revealed significant knee damage.

It was at that moment that then-Knights assistant Tom Fedderly did something

he rarely does these days as Kaneland’s eighth-year head coach.

He looked beyond the next game.

“So way back, when he could just barely walk, we were thinking about it. And ever since then, he was like a water boy, ballboy,” Tom Fedderly said. “So it’ll be a fun year.”

Coaching his son is a reality Fedderly will live for a third straight fall as wide receiver Connor Fedderly braces for his senior season.

With Fedderly’s wife, Kathy, teaching in Naperville District 203, there was brief deliberation years ago about where the couple’s children would attend school.

The family solved the issue pretty briskly, choosing Kaneland.

“We really liked this community out here, and the kids have an opportunity in a smaller school to do lots of different things,” Tom Fedderly said.

“And so we bought a house out here.”

Fedderly’s daughter, Holly, will join Connor as a varsity athlete, competing as a junior on the girls volleyball team.

With Bulldogs coaches also planning to use Krusz as an occasional fullback and defensive tackle this season, the increased strength, mobility and flexibility is a boon.

“I’ve been going to rehab literally every week. Haven’t gone on vacation or anything to make sure I’m getting

my knee as strong as I can,” Krusz said.

“Right now, it’s 100 percent ready to go. Coaches, they’re making me slow play into it, but I’m 100 percent.”

After football season, Krusz eyes a return to the wrestling program in the 285-pound class. He still was a wrestling team captain last season and attended practices after completing his rehab work, just as he did with the football team.

Full participation, though, is much preferred, and Krusz is amped for that.

“Lots of hard hitting. Intensity is way up right now. So we’re very ready,” Krusz said.

Of that, like many things, he is sure.

No matter how a field of charity golfers fares at Geneva’s Mill Creek today, they’re destined to find the water.

The second annual Links for Living Waters benefit helps raise money for a cause led by Fox Valley Presbyterian Church that installs water purification systems in Guatemala.

Mill Creek pro Steve Feddern, who is part of the Fox Valley congregation, has visited Guatemala twice, helping with placing the systems and educating citizens on the uses of clean water.

“It’s a real rewarding mission,” Feddern wrote in an email. “Not just for the people in the country but also ourselves and the church community.”

Living Waters for the World, a Spring Hill, Tennessee-based mission, boasts numerous initiating partners throughout the nation. Fox Valley Presbyterian Church’s involvement dates to 2007, and includes five system installations to date.

“It’s actually cheaper to purchase pop in Guatemala than it is to purchase clean drinking water,” said Fred Filiaggi, chairman of Fox Valley’s Living Waters ini-

tiative.

Last year’s inaugural golf outing raised approximately $17,000. Today’s event will help fund the installation of three more systems – two in November and one in the first quarter of 2015.

Average systems cost $3,000 to $3,300.

Systems often are installed at churches, schools or medical centers. In some communities, one of those institutions operates in conjunction with the other two. Fox Valley has initiated three systems in Guatemala’s southwest and more industrialized region, and two in the northwest, which is home to more indigenous tribes.

The initiating partner – in this instance, Fox Valley – offers plenty of instruction to the operating partner along the way. There also is health and hygiene education.

“Almost like a small business contract where we make sure A) that they’re a good fit, that they’re going to operate the system properly … and B) it helps the economy there, keeps people employed and keeps the systems sustainable,” Filiaggi said.

It’s a brand of complicated football that Jeffery speaks more confidently about after his wildly successful 2013 season and another training camp and preseason spent excelling in it.

Jeffery has earned Cutler’s complete confidence. “[You] make every single catch in practice,” he said.

Jeffery knows what routes to run against certain coverages and in particular situations.

“We hold ourselves accountable for what we think works best for our offense,” he said.

And when it comes down to it, Cutler and the Bears are confident Jeffery can out-leap any defensive back for a catch.

“He knows what he can do on the field and he’s a hard worker,” Cutler said.

“It’s just in him. It’s just keeping him healthy now and trying to keep him engaged in the offense.”

Jeffery’s work ethic was considered a concern when he taken with the 45th overall pick in 2012. But that’s a farfetched worry now. Jeffery seems more confident with his blossoming stardom every time he talks.

“The sky’s the limit for this offense,” he said.

And it’s the sky where Jeffery does his most exciting work.

“We’re excited to see where he goes with this,” Trestman said. “If you could see him work here on a daily basis, he’s doing all the right things to put another good year together.”

Switch successful Brown doesn’t regret switching positions

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois senior wide receiver Da’Ron Brown wasn’t exactly thrilled when he was told he would move from wide receiver to quarterback for his junior year at Chicago’s Morgan Park High School.

“I didn’t like it. I didn’t want to move. I was just getting into the feel of being a receiver at that time. I was just getting that groove down, and coach decided he wanted me to move to quarterback,” Brown said. “It was a hard decision when you feel like you’re making those strides and improving, then you’ve got to switch.”

Morgan Park wanted the athletic Brown under center in its rushing offense, and Brown ran for 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns his senior

year.

At the same time, he feels he would have had more Division I offers out of high school – NIU and Wyoming were the only teams that offered him, had he stayed at receiver. He was a wideout at heart.

At the same time, Brown, who led the Mustangs to a playoff win his junior and senior years, doesn’t have any regrets.

“They accepted me as a leader. I accepted the role as well,” he said. “I don’t regret it at all.”

When he made the switch back to wideout after signing with NIU, Brown needed to become more of a crisp route runner, something he worked on during the offseason after catching 46 passes for 752 yards and nine TDs in 2013.

“I called him in, I said ‘You need to have a better summer, that’s really going to make

or break where you’re going to be,’ ” NIU wide receivers coach Thad Ward said. “He put in the work, he went out there every day in the summer and did what you’re supposed to do, and he’s polished up his game and he’s catching the ball well. He’s looking fast, he’s in shape.

“So he’s been able to last throughout these whole 22 practices, which is different.

A lot of times you have guys that pull up here, pull up here with injuries. But because he took care of his body, he looks good.”

Two preseason games had passed without much from receiver Alshon Jeffery and it was worrisome. His one catch for 13 yards disputed the glowing declarations of his future stardom that receiver Brandon Marshall and others confidently had made.

There was plenty of smoke but no fire.

It took a first-half flurry consisting of five scoring drives against the Oakland Raiders by the Bears’ starters in their next exhibition to change all that. Jeffery’s star flashed with seven catches on eight targets for 77 yards.

“I was just working hard every day in practice,” a reflective Jeffery said of his 2013 preseason.

Flash forward to Wednesday, and Jeffery was one of several Bears Pro Bowl players coming off the field. The Bears are counting on him to not only repeat last season’s success – 89 catches, 1,421 yards and seven touchdowns – but to best it.

After all, Jeffery can’t truly be considered an NFL star unless his on-the-field success becomes a yearly occurrence.

“He’s done it for one year,” coach Marc Trestman said.

“He knows he’s got to prove himself, [that] he’s got to stack years and years together to be a great player like Brandon has. He’s certainly confident he can do it. He knows he can compete at this level and compete at a high level.”

A formidable foe awaits Jeffery on Friday in Seattle. The Seahawks’ secondary is widely considered the league’s best with big and brash cornerback Richard Sherman arguably the best at his position.

There won’t be much game-planning, but a one-onone matchup against Sherman should be competitive and revealing for Jeffery.

“We’ll see after the game and then I could tell you (where I am),” Jeffery said.

“For now, I’m just worried

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN Chicago Sun-Times The White Sox traded second baseman Gordon Beckham to the Los Angeles Angels Thursday for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Beckham, 27, a first-round White Sox draft choice in 2008 who never met lofty expectations after a strong rookie season in 2009, has struggled offensively with the Sox this season, batting .221 with 24 doubles and 36 RBI in 101 games.

The Sox will call up middle infielder Carlos Sanchez from AAA Charlotte before today’s game in New York against the Yankees. They have several second-base prospects on the rise, including Carlos Sanchez, Micah Johnson (out for the season with a hamstring strain) and Marcus Semien -- who will be called up when rosters expand in September -- so it appeared likely that Beckham would to be playing his final season with the Sox because of his inability to produce offensively. He was the sixth-highest-paid Sox player at $4.175 million for 2014.

“This trade is more about creating an opportunity for some of our young players to come up and get some play time,’’ general manager Rick

Hahn said.

Beckham is a career .244 hitter with 61 homers and 276 RBIs. Last season, while speculation that captain Paul Konerko might be playing his final season was gaining speed, Beckham was thought of as a candidate to take on a greater leadership role in the clubhouse.

“Gordon was just fantastic as an individual and a great representative of the White Sox organization,’’ Hahn said.

“His work ethic and desire to be the best will certainly be missed.

“It was time to make a change and give someone else an opportunity as we develop this next core.”

Hahn said he didn’t have an answer for why Beckham never reached the potential he showed as a rookie. He suggested Beckham not going through difficulty in the minor leagues may have been a factor.

“When he did struggle after the league adjusted to him, he was struggling for the first time in his life,’’ Hahn said.

“This is a difficult game. When you have to pull yourself out of failure on a major league stage, it becomes a little more difficult.’’

Beckham’s defense has been excellent this season and throughout his career.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt prepares backpacks for Back to School Bash KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – It took less than an hour on Aug. 15 for employees at the Geneva office of Boston-based publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to fill 100 backpacks with school supplies for Mooseheart’s students, states a news release.

The backpacks and the supplies were prepared for Mooseheart’s annual Back to School Bash, which was scheduled for Tuesday. The event set the stage for the new school year prior to Wednesday’s first day of classes.

“I love this project because it brings people from all different departments together,” said Lindsay Adamzak, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt account executive, in the release. “Our goal had been to have 50 percent participation in this. Last year, we had something like 87 percent.”

This is the third consecutive year Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Geneva office staff provided backpacks filled with supplies to Mooseheart’s students. The project is coordinated through the company’s Community Investment Council, for which Adamzak is the project manager.

Half the backpacks are going to Mooseheart’s elementary school students, while the rest will go to the middle school students, according to the release. Mooseheart high school stu-

dents than backpacks we provide,” Adamzak said. “We always have a few backpacks ready for students who come in during the year. That way, those students start with a backpack full of supplies, too.”

Every item in the backpacks will be put to use, said Jeff Szymczak, Mooseheart superintendent of education.

“One-hundred percent of our sup-

plies are donations,” Szymczak said.

“Every pen, every pencil, every sticky note comes from money given to us by the Moose because our kids aren’t coming to us [with] all these items. So this helps out a lot.”

Founded in 1913, Mooseheart is supported completely through private donations – the great majority of which come from the 1.1 million men and women of the Moose fraternal organization, in more than 1,700 lodges and 1,600 chapters located throughout the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Bermuda. Moose International headquarters is located on the Mooseheart campus.

Since its founding, Mooseheart has operated a complete, accredited kindergarten-through-high-school academic program, plus art, music, vocational training and interscholastic sports. It is an extremely nurturing and student-tailored program, with an average student-teacher ratio of 12-1, states the release.

Mooseheart is currently home to roughly 230 students, ranging from preschoolers to high school seniors.

Applications for admission to Mooseheart are considered from any family whose children are, for whatever reason, lacking a stable home environment. Mooseheart boasts its own U.S. Post Office and a fully functioning branch of Fifth Third Bank, states the release.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles presented its annual Golden Turtle Awards at the Bob Leonard River Run and Walk on Aug. 9 at Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles.

The individual award went to Pam Otto, the St. Charles Park District’s manager of nature programs and interpretive services.

Otto cultivates ongoing environmental partnerships with St. Charles School District 303, the Kane County Audubon Society and the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

She has taught wetland ecology for 14 years, and it is the first field trip the park district offers in partnership with District 303.

About 1,000 students a year participate in the trip, plus teachers and chaperones, according to a news release. Otto also writes a weekly column for the Kane County Chronicle.

The group award went to the Pottawatomie Garden Club, which was established in 1928.

The award-winning club of about 120 active volunteer members has enhanced and maintained both public and private properties in St. Charles, according to the release. Each spring and fall, the club plants flowers on the Main and Illinois street bridges and all around downtown St Charles. The club also provides the stewardship of the native planting areas along the Bob Leonard walkway.

Holly Cabel, the foundation’s president, presented the awards to Otto and the Pottawatomie Garden Club. The Golden Turtle Awards recognize a person, group or organization that has contributed significantly to the development, preservation, enhancement and appreciation of the Fox River corridor in St. Charles, according to the release.

Rick Remington has joined the management team at Pheasant Run Resort and Spa as food and beverage director, according to Charlie Shirk, general manager for the 473-room resort and expo center located in St. Charles. Remington, a 30-year food and beverage pro, now oversees a team of 140 employees, states a news release. He most recently served as food and beverage director for Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa in Galena. An at-home chef and certified sommelier, Remington enjoys time away from work photographing wildlife, the release states.

The National Education Association, which represents nearly three million teachers, administrators and education support professionals, has announced that it has selected Amy Kappele, a teacher at Davis Primary School in St. Charles, as a facilitator for the NEA Great Public Schools Network. The GPS Network is an online community where teachers, parents, education support professionals and other community stakeholders can share ideas and resources aimed at improving student success.

Newton Li, M.D., has joined the Department of Allergy/Immunology at Advocate Dreyer’s Batavia and West Aurora locations. Li received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Evanston in 2004 and went on to complete his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago in 2008. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine from McGraw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago in 2011, followed by his fellowship in allergy/immunology in 2014.

WHEELS Mazda6 sedan tweaked for latest market For a midsize sedan, the 2015 Mazda6 deserves more recognition.

It is sporty and economical.

It is roomy and safe.

The base price of $21,170 includes basic amenities, such as power door locks and exterior mirrors, air conditioning with pollen filter, cruise control, remote keyless entry, push button start, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, rear window defogger, intermittent wipers and a sound system serving AM-FM radio plus compact disc and MP3 players, USB port and auxiliary audio input jack.

Redundant audio controls are mounted on the steering wheel.

This year Mazda has added four power windows with all four express up and down to the Mazda6 standard fare list.

There are three trim levels, and they are Sport (base), $23,845 Touring and $29,895 Grand Touring. All three share the same Skyactiv 2.5-liter, direct injection, chain-driven dual overhead cams, 184-horsepower, four-cylinder engine with the choice of either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

With a trademarked i-Eloop system, the frontwheel-drive, five-passenger, four-door sedan can average 40 miles per gallon of gasoline usage on the highway. This is tops among non-hybrid cars in the midsize sedan market.

In combined highway and city driving, the Mazda6 with i-Eloop can average 32 mpg with two adults aboard, and this fuel usage is remarkable.

Without i-Eloop, the average is shy of 40 mpg on the highway and 32 mpg combined, but not by much.

The company does not release data but a 2015 Mazda6 tested by automotive reviewers puts the sedan without i-Eloop at 30 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

The i-Eloop system is optional and is lumped into a $2,000 technology package

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper that also includes radar cruise control, automatic high beam control, forward obstruction and lane departure systems and grille shutters (open and close, depending on engine temperature, for the purpose of fuel usage).

In essence what i-Eloop does is capture energy while decelerating and then stores it for use while, say, at a stop sign or idling in a parking lot. The stored energy powers air conditioning, lights and other accessories for about a minute.

A Grand Touring model with i-Eloop was tested

recently and, with two adults aboard, averaged 32.4 mpg.

Regular gasoline is recommended for the 16.4-gallon tank.

From a front-quarter perspective and without looking at the badging, the Mazda6 looks like a Jaguar. Put a leaping cat on the hood as an ornament and, viewed from the side, it would be hard to tell the difference.

Although not a higher priced sport sedan, the Mazda6 with its four-cylinder engine has been timed from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.8 seconds. Not bad. Braking from 60 mpg to 0 on dry pavement takes a distance of slightly less than 130 feet. Brakes are discs with single calipers and measure 11.7 inches in front and 10.9 inches in the rear.

The Grand Touring’s price

reflects leather (not leatherette) seating surfaces, power and heated front seats with memory for the driver, an 11-speaker (instead of six) Bose sound system, SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation system, heated exterior mirrors with inset turn lamps, power moonroof, P225 radial tires mounted on 19-inch (not 17) platinum silver-painted aluminum alloy wheels, LED running lights, rear spoiler and adaptive bixenon headlights. These headlights turn (up to 15 degrees) as the car travels through curves.

The ride is firm if not too firm as the Mazda6 is built for sport as well as soft riding pleasure. For 6-footers or slightly taller, leg room is ample front and rear.

Besides the usual standard safety features of stabili-

ty and traction controls, antilock brakes, front-sideoverhead airbags and a tire pressure monitor, the Grand Touring model has blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert systems.

Assembled in Japan, warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance, and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

Mazda’s Skyactiv-G direct injection engine is today’s variant of the 2011 original.

‘When the Game Stands Tall’ falls short

Loosely based on the story of the De La Salle High School (Concord, California) football program and its record 151-game winning streak – the longest in all of sports history – the film is more “Secretariat,” less “Seabiscuit.” There is no grit.

The players and their legendary coach, Bob Ladouceur (Jim Caviezel), deserve material better than the cliche-ridden pap written

by Scott Marshall Smith (“The Score”) and directed

by Thomas Carter (“Coach Carter”). The pair outkick their coverage with a movie so weighed down in treacly cliches that you can finish the characters’ sentences.

Fumbling more times than the Pats’ Stevan Ridley, they consistently mistake cloying melodrama for authenticity, and manipulate events for

emotional effect so cavalierly that you wonder how much truth remains.

For his part, Caviezel is the stoic but humble Ladouceur, coach and religion teacher. Football is a vehicle to teach his charges, many of them poor, how to be honorable young men. He preaches “perfect effort” from snap to whistle, and also in the game of life.

Most of the film’s focus is what happens after the streak is broken and how the team gets its groove back.

They must overcome the coach’s heart attack and the death of a beloved teammate.

There’s also the business of letting down a town so obsessed with winning that even the mail carrier delivers his 49 cents worth to the coach. And where would we be without a star running back (Alexander Ludwig) closing in on the all-time scoring record while dealing with an abusive father (Clancy Brown)?

After his health scare, Ladouceur experiences his

own existential crises. “I’m a lie,” he tells his wife (a wasted Laura Dern), as his faith in the game and God is tested after one of his best players (Ser’Darius Blain) is gunned down. Plus, he’s got a strained relationship with his son, Danny (Matthew Daddario), a starting wideout who keeps dropping passes. Says Danny: “The whole time I needed a father, I got a coach; and when I needed a coach, I got a lame dad.”

To make matters even more dramatic, there’s another player (Stephan James) whose mother just died and another (Jessie Usher) whose swagger is a liability. The players are fighting on the practice field and dogging reps in the weight room.

What’s a coach to do to bring his players back to earth and refocus on the prize?

Bring them to a VA hospital to spend an inspiring day with wounded warriors, of course! Turns out, it’s one of the movie’s more genuine scenes.

Per usual in football mov-

ies, there are bone-crushing hits, acrobatic catches and cameos from gridiron notables like Maurice Jones Drew and LSU coach Les Miles, and plenty of Dick’s Sporting Goods screen time.

De La Salle went from top dog to underdog and in the film’s climactic game, it clashes with the No. 1 team in the country, Long Beach Polytechnic. “It no longer about who’s bigger, stronger or faster. It’s who has more heart.”

Right. And there’s no “I” in team, either. Character counts, too. Also, don’t give up. Sure, the movie tackles a compelling story and the message of the movie scores points, but the execution of the game plan never gains ground.

Relief possible from periodic limb movement disorder Dear Doctor K: Can you discuss periodic limb movement disorder? Is it the same as restless legs syndrome?

Dear Reader: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) are similar disorders, and often (but not always) occur together.

RLS causes a wide range of uncomfortable leg sensations. They tend to occur most often when the legs are at rest during the day or in the evening. The sensations are almost always accompanied by an irresistible need to move the legs. Moving the legs can bring temporary relief.

Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) causes people to kick and jerk their arms and legs throughout the night. In PLMD, leg and arm muscles may involuntarily contract hundreds of times a night. You may not be aware of it, but a bed partner probably will be.

PLMD limb movements may last only a few minutes or may continue for hours, with intervals of sound sleep in between. They

People with PLMD generally awaken for a few seconds at a time during limb movements, often without realizing it. Then they fall back into the lighter stages of sleep. They may wake up baffled at why they feel exhausted despite getting what they thought was a full night’s rest.

Most people with RLS also have PLMD – but the reverse is not true. RLS involves voluntary movements performed to ease discomfort. PLMD involves involuntary movements that the person may not even be aware of. Many people with RLS have iron deficiency. Taking iron supplements treats not only the iron deficiency, but also improves the symptoms of RLS. You should not take iron

supplements unless blood tests have proved that you have iron deficiency. That’s because some people have a genetic condition that leads to iron overload if they take iron supplements they don’t need.

Also, if you have RLS and are found to have iron deficiency, your doctor should diagnose why you have it. The most common cause is menstrual bleeding. But sometimes a person can be very slowly losing blood (and the iron in the blood) without knowing it.

There’s some evidence that exercise can ease both RLS and PLMD. Walking or other moderate exercise such as biking or swimming are good choices. Some people find that cold showers help; others prefer heat.

Drugs that ease the tremors of Parkinson’s disease also reduce the number of leg movements.

Dr. Wallace: Our school has a rule that students are not permitted to kiss each other on school grounds.

If caught, the first punishment is an hour’s detention for both kissers. If caught in an amorous position a second time, the “criminals” are suspended for a day. I think this is a very stupid rule. My boyfriend and I had to spend an hour Saturday morning at school serving an hour’s detention. It was a very boring hour. There was no talking allowed, and cell phones weren’t permitted.

What the world needs is a lot more kisses and hugs and a lot less violence, crime and wars. My mom and dad are very much in love and they kiss at least once a day. Our big crime to warrant this boring hour of detention was a simple

I bet that you did. – Nameless, Anaheim, California Dear Nameless: You would have lost your bet. Kissing and other forms of affection were banned at Pacifica High School when I was there. Kissing caused students to block halls and campus walkways.

I’m a big fan of love and affection, but not on a 40-acre campus.

The first “offense” was a warning. The second was a call to the parents telling them that kissing was not permitted on school grounds, and an explanation of why the rule was in place.

The parents were then asked to discuss this with their teen to see that the demonstration of love at school ended, and if it didn’t, the student would be suspended and duly reported in the student’s personal file.

It’s wonderful that your parents kiss every day. That’s a wonderful way for them to show their love for one another in view of the family. But I’m sure most of the kissing is done at home and not at mom or dad’s work station with many familiar employees watching the smooch!

When Encyclopedia Britannica was still publishing its annual Yearbook, I wrote the bridge entry and did not consider it a funny habit – but each to her or his own taste.

We could fill a chunk of an encyclopedia with deals in which players did not watch their entries carefully enough. In this layout, South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond ace. When East signals enthusiastically with his nine, West continues with the diamond king and another diamond. East wins the third trick with his queen and shifts to a spade. How should South continue?

When South jumped to four hearts, he wondered if four spades might have been better, but had no sensible way to investigate.

South must play his trump suit without loss. We all know the “eight ever” ditty that advises finessing as the percentage action.

But should declarer cash a high heart first?

If the suit is 3-2, South will get home if East has the queen and fail when West has her majesty.

But if East started with four hearts, he is four times more likely to have the queen than West. (There are four low singletons that West can hold and there is only one singleton queen.) So declarer should take two heart finesses, which requires two dummy entries.

South must overtake his spade jack with dummy’s queen and play a heart to his jack. Then he should overtake his club king with dummy’s ace, repeat the heart finesse, draw trumps and claim.
