ither kindergartners are getting smaller or backpacks are getting bigger.

I had the chance to photograph a couple of first days of school around Kane County this week. I first headed to Batavia High School early Monday morning. The high-schoolers all seemed to know the drill and were ready to start their new

year.

Later in the week, I decided to spend some time with the littles at Norton Creek Elementary School in West Chicago.

Dennis Harper pleads guilty to domestic battery charge

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Dennis Harper, the campaign manager for Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer’s successful race, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of misdemeanor domestic battery. Harper was admitted into a deferred prosecution program.

Kane County Judge John Noverini accepted the plea from Harper, 55, for an amended domestic battery charge alleging Harper grabbed his estranged wife at their home in Sugar Grove on Feb. 16, 2014. Harper’s trial had been scheduled to begin Monday, court records show.

For those who successfully complete the one-year program, the charge will be dismissed, and they will not have

a conviction on their record, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s website, www.saopublic.co.kane.il.us.

The diversion program is designed to hold firsttime offenders accountable and provides counseling “to Dennis Harper prevent them from becoming repeat offenders,” according to the website.

If requirements of the program are not completed, or if a new offense is committed, participants “will be terminated from the program, a conviction will be entered and the criminal case will proceed to sentencing,” according to the website.

As a result of the charges, Harper is on leave without pay from both departments, officials said.

Court records show Harper’s wife filed for divorce three days after the domestic battery incident, and it became final in June.

Working through daughter’s illness inspires La Fox mom to help others

kkull@shawmedia.com Shayna stopped her methodical coloring, dropped the pen from her “Tangled Magic Coloring Book” and climbed on her mother’s lap.

The 4-year-old’s long brown locks covered her eyes as she put her thumb in her mouth and pulled her knees to her chest. Her mother, Casarah Stark, cradled the preschooler’s tiny frame and kissed her forehead.

By medical standards, when Shayna was an infant it had not seemed likely the little girl would have sufficient motor skills to walk, talk or climb easily.

Shayna suffered from a seizure when she was younger than 2 days old. Doctors determined after testing she had a stroke on the left side of her brain. As the infant developed, her conditions could have significantly affected her motor skills, said Katie Atkins, a pediatric nurse at Cadence Health.

“At that point, you don’t know how affected she’s going to be,” Atkins said. “It was very likely she’d have seizures for the rest of her life.”

Casarah Stark remembered lying in bed at night, worrying about her daughter’s illness. Far away from a hospital with million-dollar machines and experts, she said she felt alone and afraid.

The mother studied to be a nurse at Northern Illinois University and has a master’s degree in psychology in child and adolescent development from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, which she thinks gave her foresight as she cared for her disabled daughter, she said.

But it also made her think about other families who might not have been as lucky.

“I felt blessed that I was an adult, that I had a college education and that I had a skill set that would help traverse what was going on,” she said.

“But what about the parents who had a lower cognitive functioning, or even a person who’d just graduated from high school and had never been in a hospital?”

••• During the next two years, Casarah Stark did everything in her power to make her daughter successful. She did research; she enrolled Shayna in an early intervention program through the state of Illinois, which provided physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy in her home. When she found out her daughter’s language area might be affected by her stroke, she taught the toddler American Sign Language.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, about one in every three children is diagnosed with a birth defect.

There are more than 4,000 types of birth defects that range in severity – some can

be easily remedied, some are life altering, others result in death.

With the wide range of conditions, finding resources to help can be difficult. Running a Google search of “resources for infants with disabilities” offers thousands of pages of results. Searching “neonatal stroke” returns hundreds of pages.

“It’s like the wild west,” Casarah Stark said. “All this stuff is out there, but it’s kind of disjointed. There’s not really a system for connecting people.”

Casarah Stark is looking to fix that with a website designed to connect people with credible, evidence-based resources about a variety of conditions.

She also wants to connect people with webinars, a “Craigslist for special needs equipment” to rent at affordable prices and hotlinks to organizations to contact for

information.

But in order to do it, she needed to get “degreed up,” she said. She is enrolled at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale in the applied behavioral analysis master’s program and in a doctoral program for clinical psychology at Walden University out of Minneapolis, she said. She does most of her coursework online.

“The people you have to talk to [for a project like this] are highly educated. They want to make sure you have a ‘P’ and a ‘Q’ behind your name to allow you to tell them what they should do better,” she said.

••• On an afternoon in St. Charles, Casarah Stark and Shayna sat at a coffee shop bustling with late morning patrons. Casarah Stark sent her daughter through the maze of people with her baby sitter, Kailey Dobija, to get a

treat from the counter.

“She used to have what we called ‘floppy feet’ on her right side,” Casarah Stark said. “It’s when one foot kind of drags on the ground. Now you can see, she doesn’t have any hint of that.”

The mother recalled a day in 2012 that changed the course of the Starks’ lives forever.

Shayna had frequent seizures since she was born.

Sometimes, the convulsions were so bad, the medicine used to treat them wouldn’t work. After one especially bad episode, Casarah Stark took her daughter to the hospital. When they got home the next morning, a man was waiting in the driveway of the Starks’ old farmhouse in response to an advertisement for a refrigerator Casarah Stark posted on Craigslist, she said.

The mother told him to test out the refrigerator and went inside to give her daughter medicine. When she came back outside, Casarah Stark recalls the man asked her why they had spent the night in the hospital. Casarah Stark said she explained the situation and he said, “Now I know why I drove two and a half hours from Indiana to come here.”

“I thought, ‘Oh great, this is when the Craigslist guy eats me,’ ” Casarah Stark said.

The man asked to lay his hands on the little girl and prayed that she would never have a seizure again or evidence of the medical condition that brought her to this place, Casarah Stark said.

That night, when the mother and daughter sat at dinner, Shayna didn’t have a seizure. The next day, she was free from seizures and hasn’t had one since.

“Her last seizure was in 2012,” Atkins said. “She was able to come off the medicine and she has done an amazing

“I’m a ‘doer,’ and I’m on this mission,” Casarah Stark said. “It doesn’t have to be done this moment, but it’s a process.”

She believes in the power of doing “little things” to bring awareness of issues close to her heart and to make life better for anyone who struggles. She donated all of her daughter’s old clothes to families in need. For Shayna’s birthday, the two collected toys and gave them to Mooseheart for the children in the home for unwed, pregnant moms.

Earlier this year, Shayna saw a photograph in a flier for the Children With Hair Loss Foundation. After a conversation with her mother, she decided to donate six inches of her hair to the organization.

St. Charles man accused of dealing Ecstasy at hotel

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 27-yearold St. Charles man faces drug-related charges in connection to his activity at a local hotel, according to police and court records.

Patrick S. Kidwell, of the 500 block of South 16th Street, St. Charles, is charged with felony possession of between 100 and 400 grams of Ecstasy with intent to deliver, according to court records. He also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

After a period of surveillance, investigators executed a search warrant Aug. 12, Backus said. They seized 160 grams of MDMA – another name for

Ecstasy – in powder form, as well as various drug paraphernalia, he said.

“We are alleging he was selling the drugs in that [hotel] location,” Backus said of Kidwell.

Ecstasy is being consumed in a powdered form in .1 gram, single-dosage amounts placed into capsules – the entire capsule is ingested, Backus said.

As of early Thursday evening, Kidwell remained in the Kane County Jail on a $35,000 bond, according to county records. His next court date is scheduled for Thursday.

GENEVA – Kane County officials sought answers Thursday about why a new voting law is prompting a request for nearly $2 million in equipment.

“I don’t like this thing more than you do,” Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham told the Public Service Committee. “At a time when all of us are hurting, they put an added burden on us.”

The new law, which was passed during Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration, requires that Kane County offer same-day voter registration at all 98 polling places for countywide elections. Such services were offered at five Kane County polling sites for the 2014 general election.

To comply with the mandated expansion, Cunningham is seeking approval to buy additional voting equipment at the cost of $1.9 million over five years.

“We will do what we can do to cut costs,” he said.

Committee members discussed the issue at length.

“I’m looking for options here,” said Maggie Auger, R-Algonquin.

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile in 4 county locations Campton Township batch among the positive tests KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – The Kane County Health Department this week collected four batches of mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile Virus, including one batch in Campton Township, according to a news release.

Other batches were collected in Elgin, Gliberts and Carpentersville.

“This is the time of year in late summer when we can expect to see an increase in West Nile activity,” the release stated. “So far this year, traps near Elburn, Elgin, Aurora and Montgomery have also yielded batches of mosquitoes that tested

positive for the disease.”

Most people with the virus have no clinical symptoms of illness, but some might become ill three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Only about two out of 10 who are bitten by an infected mosquito will experience any illness. Illness from West Nile is usually mild and includes fever, headache and body aches, but serious illness, such as encephalitis and meningitis, and death are possible.

Those ages 50 and older have the highest risk of severe disease.

The deputy reportedly stopped Brannon at his driver’s side door, explained the reason for the traffic stop and asked him about his activity with the license plate. According to the report, Brannon said

he had a fake registration sticker and ate it.

“I asked him if he ate his sticker, and he stated yes,” the deputy wrote in the report.

Brannon, 46, of the 30W400 block of Whitney Road, was charged with obstructing justice/destroying evidence, a Class 4 felony. He also received four citations – driving without insurance, expired registration sticker, registration suspended for mandatory insurance violation and driving with a suspended license.

His vehicle was reportedly towed. He is expected in court Thursday.

Douglas L. Zeni died on July 16, 2015, from medical complications after several weeks of intensive care at the St. Alexius Hospital in Saint Louis. He was 67 years old.

Douglas was a 1966 graduate of Geneva Community High School, where he served as Sophomore Class President, and was Co-Captain of the football team and President of the G Club during his Senior Year. He was also a phenomenal baseball catcher in high school and often played in intramural softball games held at the old Geneva McKinley Park during the summertime. Doug was active in his church’s Youth Group at the Fox Valley Presbyterian Church in Geneva. After high

I would like to comment on the St. Charles City Council meeting in which they discussed video gaming. Is Ms. Payleitner that naive to think that St. Charles residents aren’t gaming?

News flash: they are gaming in other cities and towns. Gaming machines are 10 minutes away from St. Charles. The City Council is not stopping people from gaming by keeping it out of St. Charles. They are sending revenue that could be made in St. Charles to other cities, and not just the gaming revenue.

Food and beverage revenues should be a factor, too. Some would rather have the city raise taxes then allow gaming.

It should be unconscionable to raise taxes even more.

Why aren’t we able choose how to spend our money? As elected officials, the aldermen are entitled to their opinion, just as I am. But as elected officials they are required to set their personal opinions aside and listen to those that elected them. Keep the revenue in St. Charles!

Let women serve in elite military units THE WASHINGTON POST Today, two women will stand alongside 94 men – and thousands more in history – to receive their U.S. Army Ranger tabs.

For the men, the new pins on their uniforms will represent an opportunity for future service. For the women, the first to graduate from Ranger School, the pins will be little more than badges of honor: While the female soldiers have passed every test thrown their way, they still cannot audition to join the elite 75th Ranger Regiment.

AMENDMENT

In January 2013, then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced an end to a policy that had barred women from serving in combat roles since 1994.

In January, the military will have to open all positions to women unless there is a valid reason to keep some closed to safeguard military effectiveness.

The success of the two soon-to-be Ranger School graduates suggests that, at least in most cases, such reasons don’t exist.

Service chiefs might opt to keep the infantry and some elite units such as the

Ranger Regiment male-only, on the grounds that those positions are among the most physically demanding.

But Ranger School itself is one of the toughest tests the military has to offer.

Women have already shown they have the mettle to make it through a regimen so grueling that 45 percent of those who attempt it fail every year.

This year, 19 female hopefuls tried out. That was narrowed down to eight, then three and now two.

The 94 men remaining come from an original pool of 380.

To join the 75th Ranger

Regiment, these men will have to pass additional tests.

Many will not make it, and many – perhaps more – women would not either.

Setting so high a bar for those who wish to join the armed forces’ elite ranks is the right way to keep the country and those who fight for it safe.

Yet if anyone, male or female, clears that bar, that person deserves to fill the role. The U.S. Navy has recognized that. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jon Greenert said Tuesday that he is preparing to allow women to become

Navy SEALs if they can meet the unit’s requirements. The same should be the case for the Ranger Regiment, Green Berets and infantry in general.

In the wake of Panetta’s initial announcement, some critics worried that the armed forces would lower standards for service to give women a fair shot.

In Ranger School, standards did not go down at all: A few good women just rose to meet them.

Now it’s on the armed forces to rise to the occasion, too, and let serve all who are qualified to do so.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Bundy, Saints defend home course with win

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Despite her match-leading 39 pacing St. Charles East to its first Upstate Eight Conference girls golf victory Thursday, Rose Bundy wasn’t satisfied with her performance at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

“I started out well ,” said Bundy, who birdied the first and third holes. “I also wanted to have a strong finish. This is our home course. I expect to be better than that.”

The Saints defended their home course with a 170-209 victory over West Aurora to open their conference season.

Bundy said she was thrilled to start her nine holes with a birdie, especially after not getting much of a warm-up. The Saints junior said just hitting into a net normally doesn’t do much for her and she needs a couple of holes to get loose.

However, she crushed her first two shots on the opening hole and was putting for eagle from the back fringe of the first hole.

Bundy, who prides herself on her short game, was pleased with her drives off the tee. Her stellar driving day was best exemplified on Pottawatomie’s 305-yard eighth hole. Bundy drove right down the middle to within 50 yards of the pin.

“I was bombing some,” Bundy said with a smile.

Like Bundy, Gaffney wasn’t thrilled with how she played, but was pleased with how she finished.

“The last four holes I was

able to par out,” Gaffney said.

“That kind of stopped the bleeding. I wasn’t happy with the way I played a lot of holes.

I can be better.”

Osborne said he is happy that the squad, which made it to sectionals last season, is

driven to succeed.

“They’ve put the work in,” Osboorne said. “It showed when they qualifying scores dropped.”

Jordan credited posting the Saints’ second-best round of the day with her improved

putting.

“I didn’t have one threeputt today,” Jordan said.

She attributed the improvement to a little change in mechanics, but primarily bringing a much more positive attitude to her putting.

After graduating leading scorer Ian Larson, the 2014 Kane County Chronicle Boys Soccer Player of the Year, Batavia and coach Mark Gianfrancesco aren’t worried.

In fact, Gianfrancesco believes his team will be much more versatile not having to rely on one player to do the heavy lifting.

“We’re much more diverse offensively this year,” Gianfrancesco said. “The guys are working hard and they have been getting kind of hungry to get out there. We have a very relentless group of grinders this year that won’t quit and keep coming at you.”

The combination of a strong group of returners aided by a few newcomers who have stood out in the preseason leaves Batavia feeling it possesses a number of impact contributors.

However, as most teams go through a learning curve, having players getting used to playing at the varsity level, Gianfrancesco said he isn’t worried. He’s confident his experienced players will lead during that time, a stretch he doesn’t expect to last long.

Gianfrancesco said he has seen sophomores Joe Corno and Brandon Knapp step up, but the team also returns seniors Matt Allen, Luke Laurich, Nathan Carey and Davis DiBiase from a sectional finalist team.

“There might be a learning curve with some guys, but we have six returners,” Gianfrancesco said. “It’ll be on them for a little while, but these newer guys have been playing well and are up to the task of helping this team be successful.”

“The Notre Dame coach said he wanted Duncan to play at the highest level yearround,” Estabrook said. “So Duncan was kind of put in the spot of, ‘I’ve got to please what my future coach wants,’ so that’s really what the decision came down to.”

Losing a player of Turnbull’s size, at 6-foot-6, as well as the experience he would have brought to the field, will not be easy to overcome for Geneva. But the team is confident and thinks it might get looked over after losing an important piece.

“It kind of lights a fire un-

derneath us,” junior forward Matt Waldoch said. “Teams might underestimate us because we lost our 6-6 goalie, but I think we’re going to surprise a lot of teams.”

Junior Jason Morales and sophomore Jay Bode are currently battling for the starting position, with Estabrook not leaning one way or the other as of this Wednesday’s practice.

In a text message, Turnbull acknowledged the matter was a “tough decision,” and indicated he would rather elaborate at the end of the season.

son. The Knights will open up against West Aurora next week, followed by tournaments at Jacobs and in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

Not to mention Parillo thinks the Northern Illinois Big 12 could have one of its strongest seasons in quite awhile.

“I’m expecting every game to be a challenge,” Parillo said. “The conference has some very good talent, the Jacobs tournament had two teams that went to state last year and at the [Cedarburg Tournament], we will be the only Illinois school, so that will be tough competition, as well.”

But Parillo knows after

graduating 42 players in the past three seasons, and losing a few to transfers, the Knights have shown the early-season promise that a coach wants to see.

The long-tenured coach pointed out a strong senior class headlined by midfielders Drew Franklin, Jonathan Turyna and Cameron Pieczynski and defender Mark Dhom.

“This group has shown a great amount of senior leadership,” Parillo said. “I think the tough schedule makes for a long season, but it’ll also prepare us for the postseason. Many of our games are against 3A schools and with us being 2A, that can only make us better.”

‘That time of the year’ as race nears

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com The sixth running of the Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, set for Sept. 20, aspires to capture the same all-encompassing atmosphere as the five events that preceded it.

As co-organizers Craig Bixler and Dave Sheble team with other officials on the final stages of preparation, they want athletes to know one thing: “We always go for big-race amenities and small-race feel,” Sheble said.

Still four weekends before race day descends on downtown St. Charles, Bixler and Sheble divide time between planning, attending meetings, making phone calls and that rare brush with reminiscing.

Yes, there are moments of reflection here and there, even though the next stretch proves to be especially tedious. Bixler and Sheble know from experience.

“We feel really fortunate that we’ve had the cooperation of the cities and the park districts and local business

and sponsors and so forth to even do the first one,” Sheble said. “Never in your wildest imagination could you think that much further down the line back then. It’s settled down numbers-wise, but what’s evolved is the amenities and the attention to detail that runners have grown accustomed to.”

One new feature for 2015 was released last week. The Fox Valley Marathon races and its sister operation, the Naperville Marathon races, introduced the Valley and ’Ville and the Chicagoland Triple Crown, respective twoevent and three-event challenge medals.

The Valley and ’Ville encompasses any of the Fox Valley Marathon races – which also include a half-marathon and 20-miler – and either the Naperville Marathon or half-marathon on Nov. 8.

To complete the Chicagoland Triple Crown challenge, a runner would have to fulfill those obligations at Fox Valley and Naperville while completing any Chicagoland-based October race of 9.3 miles (15 kilometers) or lon-

ger.

Runners must designate a challenge option at the time of registration. Medals will be awarded in the race village of the Naperville Marathon races.

“We love the fact that the runners show us their loyalty,” Sheble said. “They must like the events.”

The latter certainly rings true for an offshoot of the Fox Valley Marathon. On Sept. 12, organizers will offer the second annual BQ.2 Marathon, a Boston Marathon qualifier contested on a loop of the Fox Valley course.

The 2015 path will feature some slight tweaks to last fall’s 3.2-mile loop at Fabyan Forest Preserve West through Geneva and Batavia, but is designed to be a fast course that ideally eases entry into the iconic Boston race in April 2016. The Fox Valley Marathon also is a Boston qualifier.

“We’ve got bookend races and a whole week of endurance events that brings thousands of runners to the area,” Sheble said. “It’s that time of the year. It sneaks up on us, too.”

While others may have been closing out the season with various upbeat activities, yours truly wound up in an inpatient health care facility.

No, not a major issue, but just enough to call for a week-long stay, which resulted in having plenty of time on my hands.

What follows are some observations taken from my point of view as a retired nursing administrator, a communications scholar and presumptive writer of stories, columns and books.

My mode was, then and now, to be light-hearted and giggling about my observations – but there were times that the grouchy-old-woman persona won out. Sorry about that.

Would you agree that so many ventures have an up and a down side?

Think of it as a Titanic or Love Boat contrast.

My Titanic experience began in an assigned room (after the characteristic long wait) that had no window to the outside world. Believe it!

Made me feel like those folks in steerage, knowing somehow that there might be an iceberg and the lifeboats would be reserved for the folks with portholes and staff.

ADVICE Man saddened after returning lost dog Dear Abby: A man I work with

found a dog on his way to the office. He picked it up, took it home and was immediately talking about what a good playmate the dog would make. He said he tried to call the local animal shelter, but he gave up after calling twice.

I felt he should have made more of an attempt to find the owner before claiming it as his own. I immediately posted a free “found dog” ad online and, three weeks later, received a message.

It turned out the dog belonged to a 72-year-old woman who lives alone. After confirming the dog was indeed hers, he reluctantly returned it to her.

He is now telling everyone he’s very sad at his loss. He’s receiving major sympathy from some of our co-workers who seem to be upset with me for posting the found dog

Second-generation antihistamines can relieve sinus headache Dear Doctor K: I’ve had terrible allergies this year, and they have caused repeated, severe sinus headaches. What’s the best way to treat sinus headaches?

Dear Reader: The sinuses are airfilled spaces above, between and beneath your eyes, flanking your nose. Both the nose and sinuses are lined with a thin membrane that swells and produces mucus in response to irritation. Normally, the mucus from the sinuses drains through small openings, known as ostia, into the nose. The stuff you blow out when your nose is congested is usually mucus produced by the membranes that are in your sinuses and in your nose.

Any condition that causes the nose or sinus membranes to become swollen can narrow or completely block the ostia. This results in a sinus headache. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Sinus headaches can occur in three situations: • When the membranes become inflamed; • When fluid builds up in the sinuses and can’t drain out through the nose; • When pressure in the sinuses is lower than the environmental air pressure.

Allergies are a major sinus irritant. Viral infections or exposure to secondhand smoke, perfume or

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff other inhaled chemicals also can cause a sinus headache. Whatever the cause, sinus headache pain is most often felt in the center of the face, the bridge of the nose and the cheeks.

People with allergies are especially susceptible to sinus headaches. To treat your sinus headache, start with an over-thecounter (OTC) antihistamine.

Histamine is a substance released during an allergic reaction; it causes swelling of the mucous membranes and mucus production.

Antihistamines block the action of histamine.

Some antihistamines (both OTC and prescription) have bothersome side effects. They can make you drowsy, slow your reaction time and impair your judgment.

Older, “first-generation” antihistamines are more likely to cause such effects.

Newer, “second-generation” antihistamines have fewer side effects. They are less likely to cause drowsiness and nasal dryness than the older ones, but still can cause these symptoms in some people.

These non-sedating medicines include loratadine (Claritin, others)

and fexofenadine (Allegra). They are available over the counter.

Desloratadine (Clarinex) and azelastine (Astelin nasal spray) are available by prescription.

Corticosteroid nasal sprays reduce swelling and mucus in the nasal passageway. They also relieve nasal symptoms. These sprays require a doctor’s prescription.

Guaifenesin is another ingredient to look for. It thins the mucus so that it drains more easily. (Mucinex is especially effective.)

Decongestants also reduce swelling and open up the nasal and sinus passages. A steam bath can sometimes also do the trick.

Sometimes sinus inflammation and congestion can trigger migraine headaches in people prone to getting them. There are several distinctive features of many migraine headaches. They often begin on one side of the head; are located behind the eye or in the temple; or are pounding or throbbing, rather than steady; are accompanied by nausea; are accompanied by changes in vision (blurring, black spots, flashes of light). Different medicines are needed to prevent migraines.

Teen sees mom twice a year Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and live with my grandmother, who has been my guardian since the day I was born. My mother was 16 and not married when I was born. My grandmother is just like a mother to me and I love her very much. She is also a very good person and makes sure that she does everything possible for me to have a good education.

My problem is that my grandmother and my mother are not on speaking terms and never have been. In fact, I only see my mother once or twice a year. My grandmother does not approve of her lifestyle, mainly because she has had a lot of live-in boyfriends. But about a month ago, my mother got married for the first time. Poker players need to “read” their opponents, judging what they hold from their bets and their body language. Bridge experts also read their opponents, during the bidding and play.

As an example, in today’s deal, how should South play in three notrump? West leads the club king.

South ducks the first two clubs and takes the third. East follows twice, then discards a low diamond.

North was not expecting his partner to have any problems, but the duplication of values in the red suits has left South with only seven top winners: three hearts, three diamonds and one club. He must take two spade tricks. How should declarer try to accomplish that?

The right start is low to dummy’s queen. If East wins with the ace, South should play a spade to dummy’s 10 on the second round.

But if the spade queen wins, declarer returns to his hand in a red suit and leads another spade. If West plays low again, South must hope that he can read his opponents.

If East fumbled on the first round of the suit, declarer should finesse dummy’s 10. East would hesitate only with the ace. Or, if West paused momentarily on either round, South should put up dummy’s king. Similarly, without the ace, West would have had no reason to waver.

If both played low smoothly, declarer must guess – good luck!

All right, I would tend to finesse the 10 because East had to find only one good play; West would have had to make two.
