In addition to Clarke spraying for mosquitoes, cities and villages have their own treatments of storm drains to reduce mosquito breeding areas, Balis said.

According to the state health department, Culex pippins and quinquefasciatus are the two species of house mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus.

Culex will lay rafts of eggs on still water – they cannot develop in running water – so ridding areas of stagnant water is key to reducing the incidence of West Nile. Culex also will not travel far from where they breed, so health officials urge residents to clean out bird baths, flower pots, clogged gutters and buckets, according to the health department website.

The Aedes group of mosquito species – also known as a nuisance or floodwater mosquitoes – will lay eggs on the ground, which hatch after a heavy rain. Flood mosquitoes can fly up to 10 miles

The West Nile virus was discovered in five mosquito traps recently, three in Batavia and two in St. Charles, an entomologist for Clarke Environmental said.

West Nile is a virus carried by the Culex mosquito.

Clarke has several traps for mosquitoes set in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles as part of its spraying contract with the cities.

Clarke entomologist George Balis said testing results are reported to the Illinois Department of public Health.

“Several traps have tested positive,” Balis said. “[There were] two positives in Batavia on July 31 from two different samples and a third on Aug. 14 from the same area.

In St. Charles, [there were] two positives, on Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, from two separate areas.”

No mosquitoes tested positive in Geneva, he said.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed the first human West Nile virus case reported in Illinois was a Chicago woman in her 70s who became ill in July.

The West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Common West Nile virus symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Most people who are bitten have no symptoms, but others can develop severe illness, according to the health department.

Balis said the company does not reveal trap locations where mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile because residents might believe their risk is lower if they live some distance away.

“The positive tests show a presence of the virus in the region,” Balis said. “West Nile virus is endemic. It’s found within the region year after year during periods we see now.”

Batavia High School Corn Boil event set

Kane County Board members hesitant about ‘Big Brother’ idea GENEVA – A Kanevillebased company wants to help Kane County stay informed about its employees.

Members of the Human Services Committee weren’t sold on the idea, as they said it raised ethical and legal questions.

“It’s kind of like Big Brother,” Committee Chairman Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, said Wednesday.

For an annual cost of $2 an employee, Jeffrey Metcalf of Record Information Services said his company can alert the county of any changes in the public record of its employees.

Types of public records include divorce, bankruptcies, foreclosures, felonies, misdemeanors and drunken driving arrests.

No Social Security numbers are needed to get the information – just a name and full address, Metcalf said.

Washington Ave., Batavia.

As part of the open house, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. During the day, there will be theater class demonstrations and prizes will be given away, according to a news release.

“It is really a dream come true,” Music Matters Director and lifelong Batavia resident Jeff Matter said, according to a news release. “To see the smiles on our student’s faces when they enter the new building brings joy to my heart.”

Music Matters opened in June 2006 at its former location on Wilson Street in downtown Batavia and moved into its current location this summer. With this new location, Music Matters now has the space to offer several new classes, including percussion

ensemble, steel band, group ukulele classes and several other classes for adults and children.

“Our new theater program is something I have wanted to do for a long time and now we have the space to offer those classes,” Matter said, according to the release. “The school will have theater classes for children grades kindergarten through high school. The class I am really excited about is our ‘Glee’ class, where our students will get to sing and dance their favorite songs and perform them for everyone.”

For example, he said, he recently finished a project for a health insurance company in conjunction with a municipality that identified several dozen police officers who got divorced but didn’t tell the city, thus resulting in double-dipping on health benefits.

“It’s all about awareness,” Metcalf said.

asked Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven whether the county is allowed to give such reports on employees to department heads. She said there is no prohibition on getting public records.

“The question is how we use the information,” McCraven said.

Castro said the service is an interesting concept, but it also presents serious ethical issues.

She asked McCraven if it would have to be negotiated

with the bargaining units. McCraven said that would be a question for an attorney.

T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, said he often hears complaints about government interference.

“I think this is another example of government intrusion,” he said.

The committee didn’t take any action on Metcalf’s proposal.

“We’ve got a lot to think about,” Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, said.

COVER STORY GETTING A CHARGE OUT OF ELECTRICITY Price of electricity going up, but aggregation helps save some money

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Electric bills among Kane County communities with their own utilities or those that have signed up with aggregates indicate that all seem to be saving some money when compared with ComEd customers.

Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles each have their own city utilities.

Elburn uses FirstEnergy Solutions, and North Aurora and Sugar Grove each use Verde Energy for their aggregation.

A comparison of electric rates show that cost per kilowatt hour for each is comparable – but the aggregates and city utilities each pay less than the straight-up ComEd rates, according to information provided by the utilities and municipalities.

In Sugar Grove, Verde Energy charges 5.4982 cents per kilowatt hour currently, but that goes up next month to 7.31 cents per kilowatt hour until September 2015 Finance Director Pat Chamberlin said.

“ComEd has an extra charge, but we are still saving money,” Chamberlin said. “The purchased electricity adjustment or PEA rate is the variable between ComEd and our rate. This happened with [electric] deregulation, and the unfortunate part is the electric price has gone up for everybody.”

ComEd charges the aggregates an additional 1.005 cents per kilowatt hour for transmission costs, and a distribution facilities charge of 2.437 cents per kilowatt hour, 0.115 as an Illinois electricity distribution tax as of January 2014, according to information from the utility, and from an actual bill.

The Citizens Utility Board lists more than 700 Illinois units of government that are in an aggregate or going to buy from an aggregate.

In April, Kane County voters approved seeking an aggregate for the unincorporated areas.

Diane Francis, a spokeswoman for FirstEnergy, said being in an electric aggregation program is like buying in bulk at a big box store.

“The more you buy at one time, the lower the price tends to be,” Francis said.

“By participating in aggregation, each individual customer or resident tends to receive a lower price on their electric bill than if they were try to find an offer on their own.”

••• ComEd’s residential rate is 13.08 cents per kilowatt hour as of June 2014 across its service territory, according to information provided

by ComEd. Geneva recently hired electric consultant Gary Price to do a comparison of electric rates among the three cities’ utilities and ComEd. “Geneva rates are very competitive, I’d say, relative to others,” Price said at a meeting in June, when the study was presented. “Geneva’s present and future rates

lead the pack.”

At that meeting, aldermen voted to give Geneva a flat rate all year instead of higher rates in the summer.

Price said he did not break the comparisons down to the charge per kilowatt hour.

Instead, he compared the cost per month based on usage.

Price said his study rolled all charges and extra costs into the price per month.

For a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours and applying summer rates, a Batavia bill would be $138.71, ComEd would be $123.91, Geneva would be $124.51 and St. Charles would be 129.90, according to Price’s study.

For non-summer usage, the bills were $138.71 for Batavia, $122.11 for ComEd, $117.19 for Geneva and $123.90 for St. Charles, according to Price’s study.

••• Geneva’s per-kilowatt hour charge is 11.392 cents for the first 500 hours, then it drops to 10.055 for more than 500 kilowatt hours, according to information provided by the city.

St. Charles charges 11.10 cents per kilowatt hour up to 1,200 kilowatt hours, then it goes up to 12.22 per kilowatt hours for summer rates.

Its non-summer rate is 10.50 cents per kilowatt hour, according to the city’s rate ordinance.

It includes the cost of

transmission, distribution and energy.

In Batavia, the energy charge is 9.755 cents per kilowatt hour as of May 1. But adding the Purchased Power Adjustment Factor put it at 11.755 cents per kilowatt hour, Public Works Director Gary Holm said.

“We have a rate that takes the distribution charge and bundles it into the energy charge,” Holm said. “Our customers see a bill with a fixed fee each month. An energy charge encompasses not only electricity and local distribution, but we also have a third component, Purchased Power Adjustment Factor or PPAF. “If the cost of energy varies from the base assumed amount, we either charge more or less and make up for it in the PPAF,” Holm said.

A utility rate cost-comparison study, Holm said, is no more than a snapshot in time.

“Those studies are good until they day they’re published because the next day, somebody changes rates,” Holm said. “It’s at least worthwhile to do it to get a

snapshot.”

St. Charles Electric Services Manager Thomas Bruhl said the city also does an annual “snapshot comparison of estimated utility costs” for St. Charles and neighboring communities.

A St. Charles cost comparison presented in April put Geneva’s average annual electric cost at $1,120, St. Charles’ at $1,250, Batavia’s at $1,276 and ComEd at $1,293.

“This comparison ... showed that the city of St. Charles is competitive with respect to our utility rates,” Bruhl wrote in an email.

••• North Aurora Finance Director Bill Hannah said the village’s new rate next month through its aggregate will be a fixed 7.856 cents per kilowatt hour through September 2015 with 100 percent renewable energy.

“Since October 2011, we estimated the program saved $2.2 million if we had not done it and stayed with ComEd,” Hannah said. “We felt that the rates were really close and renewing with Verde for one year gave residents the most flexibility and a true fixed rate, as well.”

Elburn’s price will go from its current 4.72 cents per kilowatt hour to 7.32 cents per kilowatt hour in September, but it will remain fixed at that rate until September 2017, officials said.

Elburn Village President David Anderson said the FirstEnergy Solutions aggregate saved residential customers a little more than $1 million total over three years.

“It averages out per electric customer to $561 over the past three years,” Anderson said. “You’d have to be a few bricks short of a load not to be in an aggregate. The county has the right idea [to aggregate] for folks not in municipalities.”

Cadence Health Foundation gives to Delnor, CDH hospitals More than $3.1M in equipment KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Cadence Health Foundation announced Wednesday it is funding more than $3.1 million in new equipment, system upgrades and expansion projects at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

The Foundation has partnered with individuals and corporations to raise the funding to enhance the offerings and services of Cadence Health.

“Without the generosity of thousands of donors each and every year, we would not be in this fortunate position to be able to support a variety of vital projects at Central DuPage Hospital and Delnor Hospital,” Cadence Health Foundation President Chris Hensley said, according to a news release. “We are committed to reinvesting in our communities to bring outstanding, compassionate care closer to home.”

Projects being funded include: • Purchase of two hy-

per-slice CT scanners that will enable physicians to view high resolution images. Both hospitals will feature a hyper-scanner.

• Expansion of Delnor’s intensive and immediate care units.

• Upgrades to the da Vinci Surgical system at Delnor.

• Enhanced surgical and imaging navigation system for Cadence Health Neurosciences.

In addition to $3.1 million in funding for the system’s two hospitals, the Foundation also supports a variety of other projects, including the Ronald McDonald House near CDH. The facility, which is scheduled to open Feb. 14, will be the first Ronald McDonald House in Chicago’s western suburbs.

The house will feature approximately 12 private bedrooms and bathrooms, along with a communal living room, kitchen, dining room, recreational spaces and laundry facilities.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Meijer briefly closed Wednesday, as shoppers and employees were evacuated because of a refrigerant leak.

Despite the yellow caution tape strung across some doors and clusters of employees gathered around the entrances, shoppers continued to pull into the parking lot during the brief closure, only to be turned away.

Shopper Bobbi Cheatham of St. Charles stood among the employees at the store’s south entrance, waiting to return to her cart, which she left by the produce.

“I was just about done shopping,” she said, noting it made more sense to stay than to drive to her east-side home only to return again. “It’s packed. It’s to the top.”

The store, at 855 S. Randall Road, reopened by lunchtime.

The St. Charles Fire Department were called to Meijer at 10:33 a.m., and the first company arrived four minutes later, Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

The leak developed during maintenance on coolant piping, he said.

Meijer followed its evacuation procedures, Schelstreet said, describing it as proper conduct when dealing with potential hazardous chemicals.

He said the leaking substance had a “very low” hazard rating and characterized it as commercial refrigerant.

It was not Freon, he said.

GENEVA – CASA Kane County has started an initiative to increase its Facebook “Likes” to help increase awareness of the organization and assist in the recruitment of new volunteers, according to a news release issued by the organization.

The organization will use Facebook to interact with supporters by telling stories, giving facts and quotes and ultimately reaching out to new individuals, according to the release.

There are three main ways for someone to connect to CASA Kane County: volunteer, donate and connect.

Keeping up with the Comcast call-center fiasco

By STEPHEN L. CARTER Bloomberg News I’ve been intending for a while to write about the Comcast call-center fiasco, but it’s hard to keep up – the story just gets weirder and weirder.

Following the now-viral recording of the telephone call in which a customer service representative essentially fought with tech journalist Ryan Block over Block’s effort to cancel his service, and disclosures by former employees that the call was hardly atypical, the website Consumerist last month published an internal Comcast memorandum urging more respect for the customers, but also praising “retention professionals” who – this is where the language gets Orwellian – “make it easy for customers to choose to stay with Comcast.”

Then came the story of Tim Davis, who was promised a free visit from a technician for problems with his system and was then charged $182 for the services, a charge from which Comcast adamantly refused to back off until Davis played recordings he had made of the earlier calls in which Comcast had made the promise. Even at that point, a Comcast employee said the only reason Davis was getting the refund was that he had recorded the earlier conversation.

Now it turns out that representatives at the Comcast call center – that is, the place you contact for technical support – are actually trained to try to sell you additional products and services even as they help you through whatever your technical problem is. According to internal Comcast documents obtained by the Verge and republished by Ars Technica, the customer service representatives are trained in an “S4” strategy – the abbreviation reminding them to “Start, Solve, Sell and Summarize.”

As Ars Technica summarizes the plan, trouble calls should “play out like an elaborately choreographed dance, with the Comcast agent leading the customer through a series of steps designed to both fix the customer’s problems and extract additional revenue out of them.”

It seems unlikely that Comcast is the only company whose workers get tripped up by similar strategies.

And there is little doubt that high turnover rates among call-center employees make it difficult to foster the sort of atmosphere in which such traditional corporate mantras as “turn customers into clients” can really take hold. The automation of customer service is likely to make the problem worse, not better. But just now it is Comcast that is in the news, and Comcast that must fix the problems to avoid damaging its brand.

In the meanwhile, for those of you who are served by Comcast and are now reluctant to contact the call center, don’t worry. The reps are trained not to try to sell you anything if you volunteer that you don’t want them to, or if you sound “irate” at the end of the call, or if your account is 45 days or more past due. Just yell a lot or don’t pay your bills, and they’ll leave you alone.

promised – low cost, clean electricity – never materialized. Now we are stuck in this very expensive contract and are left wondering how this could have happened.

The rate-payers of Batavia need to know if Peabody knowingly misrepresented the facts.

I urge the Batavia City Council to request an investigation

from the attorney general regarding this contract.

We all deserve to know the truth and to find out if there was any wrongdoing on anyone’s part, and the only way to find out is to launch a thorough investigation.

North Aurora approves six-month extension of agreement with Comcast

The consortium board coordinates cable and telecommunications services for North Aurora, Plano, Sandwich and Yorkville. North Aurora has been a member of the consortium since about 2002.

The consortium oversees the public access programming for Fox Valley Television, a public and government access channel serving North Aurora, Plano, Sandwich and Yorkville. The channel is carried on Comcast cable Channel 17. Government access programming is available on Channel 10.

The village’s intergovernmental agreement with the consortium provides that 40 percent of the cable franchise fees are paid to the consortium.

“In 2008, the consortium began refunding fees, and about half of the fees that the consortium has received have been rebated back to the communities since that time,” North Aurora village attorney Kevin Drendel had told trustees.

NORTH AURORA – Village trustees have approved a six-month extension of its franchise agreement with Comcast.

“That gives us enough time to talk about our role in the Southwest Fox Valley Cable and Telecommunications Consortium,” Village Administrator Steve Bosco said.

Trustees are debating whether North Aurora should remain a member of the consortium. In order to discuss the issue further, trustees on Monday voted to extend the franchise agreement until Feb. 26.

North Aurora’s 12-year franchise agreement with Comcast had been set to expire on Tuesday.

The 23.5 composite score of the class of 2014 at St. Charles East High School is 0.5 higher than the score by the preceding class and matches the composite score of the class of 2010, which is the highest score ever posted at the school, according to the release.

The St. Charles East class of 2014 also posted the highest marks for the school in reading (23.5) and science (23.3).

The science score is a 0.8 improvement of the score in that subject earned by the St. Charles East class of 2013.

The St. Charles North High School class of 2014 matched its highest composite score ever with 23.8, which was also the mark of the class of 2011. North’s class of 2014 improved upon the mark of the preceding class by 0.1 and set new high marks for their school in English (23.4) and reading (23.6).

Officials at the St. Charles and Kaneland school districts issued news releases Wednesday celebrating student performances on ACT testing.

In Kaneland School District 302, according to a release, students who graduated from Kaneland High School posted an ACT composite score of 22.2, which was the highest composite score ever compiled in the district.

“I could not be more proud of the ACT scores posted by the Kaneland High School Class of 2014,” Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler said, according to the release. “ACT is one of many measures we use to celebrate our mission to graduate all students college, career, and community ready. This achievement shows the commitment of our students, teachers, parents and staff to academic success.”

In St. Charles School District 303, students who grad-

uated this year earned an ACT Composite score of 23.6, which matches the highest-ever ACT composite score for the district’s students, according to a release.

The district’s first 23.6 composite score was with the class of 2010, according to the release.

The class of 2013 posted the district’s highest scores ever in English (23.2), reading (23.5) and science (23.4). This is the second year in which the scores reported by ACT includes students who take the ACT test with accommodations. Before the class of 2013, ACT scores were reported only for students without accommodations.

District scores for the 2014 senior class are well above the Illinois state averages: 2.9 higher in English; 3.1 higher in mathematics; 2.7 higher in reading; 2.9 higher in science; and 2.9 higher for the Composite score, according to the release.

LOCAL BRIEFS Work on STC parking garages to begin Monday ST. CHARLES – Beginning Monday, concrete maintenance and repairs, sealant replacements and miscellaneous preventative maintenance work will begin on St. Charles’ two parking garages.

Work will start first on the westside parking deck at Illinois and First streets, according to a news release. Once finished there, maintenance to the eastside garage on Third and Walnut avenues will begin.

Repairs are expected to be complete by Oct. 17.

Both garages will remain open during the project, with temporary floor closures, the release stated. The reservation of a limited number of parking spaces will be likely, so crews are able to secure a work space.

STC automotive program receives accreditation ST. CHARLES – The automotive training program at St. Charles North High School has

received accreditation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, according to a news release.

St. Charles North’s automotive program has been accredited in maintenance and light repair. To achieve this recognition, the school’s automotive training program underwent rigorous evaluation by the NATEF. Nationally accepted standards of excellence in areas such as instruction, facilities, and equipment were used, the release stated.

ASE is a national nonprofit organization which tests and certifies repair technicians, in addition to accrediting automotive training programs.

The auto program at St. Charles East High School also is a nationally accredited program and was granted that status earlier this summer, the release stated.

Gaetano’s Batavia restaurant features Italian fusion recipes

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Above the doorway to Gaetano’s Batavia is scrolled the phrase “with respect to tradition.”

That sums up the culinary mission of Gaetano’s Batavia, an Italian fusion restaurant that recently opened at 15 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia in the former space of The Rhino Room.

“Not to be disrespectful in any way, but there’s definitely a difference between American-Italian cuisine and Italian cuisine,” said restaurant owner Wendy DiBenedetto, who is married to executive chef Gaetano DiBenedetto.

“The American-Italian cuisine that we eat here in America is nothing like the food that’s in Italy. The food that we serve here is like what you are going to eat in Italy. It’s respecting the traditions of the old recipes, and Gaetano putting his own fusion and modern twist on it.”

Gaetano DiBenedetto is a native of the coastal town of Bagheria, located just outside of Palermo, Sicily. The couple, who live in Batavia, also have owned Gaetano’s restaurant in Forest Park since 2008.

Gaetano’s has been rated as one of the best Italian restaurants in the Chicago area. In addition, in 2011 the Italian government awarded Chef Gaetano with the prestigious “Ospitalita Italiana” award for having an “authentic” Italian restaurant.

Wendy DiBenedetto attributed the acclaim that Gaetano’s has garnered to her husband.

“My husband’s creative genius has a lot to do with that,” she said. “On top of that, he only uses the highest quality level of ingredients that are available on the market. He doesn’t go cheap on anything. We have fresh seafood and fish each day. We do not serve frozen fish here. We make our own bread and pasta, and he is just a talented chef.”

Along with being the restaurant’s executive chef, he also is a jazz guitarist.

Diners might catch him playing at the restaurant on occasion.

“He played here the other night,” Wendy DiBenedetto said. “We had some musicians here ... to celebrate our opening week, and he jammed with them for a little while.”

The restaurant plans to have live entertainment at the restaurant once a week starting in the fall.

“It will be primarily jazz or classical jazz,” she said. “We do that at our other restaurant, too.”

Before opening Gaetano’s Batavia, the couple spent several months renovating the space to meet their needs.

For one thing, the space was lacking a kitchen.

“There was a room that had a free-standing electric oven and a sink and a cooler, and that was it,” Wendy DiBenedetto said. “One of the necessities of our kitchen is a wood-burning oven.

Approximately 70 percent of our dishes are cooked all the way in that oven, or they are finished off in that oven somehow. That means steaks, fish, appetizers, lots of dishes.”

Gaetano’s Batavia features a wood-burning oven from Prato, Italy.

Diners can see their food being prepared as the restaurant features an open kitchen.

The restaurant offers a wide variety of Italian dishes, including risotto.

“People are crazy about his risotto because it’s so creamy,” she said. “It really takes a lot of skill to make a good risotto.”

“He has a rib eye that he wet ages and dry ages for 21 days,” Wendy DiBenedetto said. “We then cook it in the wood-burning oven.”

Couples who want to have a quiet night to themselves but also don’t want to leave their children at home are invited to bring them to the restaurant.

The restaurant plans to offer a parents night, where parents can come and enjoy a quiet dinner in the main dining room while Wendy DiBenedetto and a helper have a pizza party and make crafts on the restaurant’s lower level.

She said the concept has worked well at their Forest Park location.

“They don’t have to hire a babysit-

ter,” she said.

Currently, Gaetano’s Batavia is only open for dinner.

“We’d rather focus on dinner and just make it fantastic,” she said.

A distraction forced Jason Haas to pause midstride.

As mud started to gather around a tiny bubbling puddle, Haas, a partner and the general manager at Tablas Creek Vineyard, took notice with a look of concern. An irrigation line to one of the olive trees that line the ascending white gravel road leading to the hillside vineyards sprung a leak. In rain-starved Paso Robles, California, which is in a three-year drought, every drop counts.

While Haas made a mental note to tend to the leak, he led a vineyard and winery tour that demonstrated his full grasp and forward-thinking leadership at Tablas Creek. Rather than wasting thousands of plastic water bottles on visitors, Haas has ice cold, refillable and reusable canteens at the entrance. Moments later, with deft touch, he sat at a machine and swiftly grafted a grape vine onto a rootstock.

In the tasting room, his handwritten notes were a precise collection of numerous tastings in pursuit of a final blend that is just right. His Twitter handle is @jasonchaas and his running commentary and writing on the Tablas Creek blog is a unique insight into the winery and wine industry.

A steel machine with a foot pedal sat on a wooden table under a tin-roofed shelter lined with limestone walls.

Green-leafed canopies surrounded the Tablas Creek work station as Haas grafted a rootstock to a vine. He used needle-nosed pliers to cut a single bud from the vine. He pumped the foot pedal under the table to start up the Omega Grafter, a machine that makes a cut shaped like the Greek letter, while it holds the bud in place.

What’s left looks like a puzzle piece. He inserted the rootstock and made another cut. With one more pump of the pedal, the bud had been grafted to the rootstock.

The bud is held in place where a grafting callous, a scar-like remnant of the Omega cut, is all that remains. A good grafting crew will have a 90 percent success rate. The callous is dipped in melted wax and cold water seals the scar and keeps fungus out. The next stop is the greenhouse where the new vine begins its threemonth journey from cozy indoor conditions to the vineyard.

In the vineyard, competition is encouraged.

In 2005, Tablas Creek began to dry farm 25 to 30 acres with head trained blocks, widely spaced apart to force the vines to work hard to find water.

“They’ve always only lived without water, there’s no training involved,” said Haas, who added the practice has naturally produced lower yields. “By August or September you’d have to dig down 5 to 6 feet to find moisture.

By October, it might be 8 feet. Vines, like most living things, are lazy. They will go down as far

While rain came late in the season to Tablas Creek, 7 of the 10 inches they’ve received this year came in March and finally turned the cover crop of oats, vetch, clover and sweet peas green. The cover crops limit erosion and the legumes introduce nitrogen to the soil.

“If you are going to get rain, it’s best to get it as late as possible so it is easily accessible to the vines,” Haas said. “This is the third year in a row we’ve had drought. We keep waiting for the other shoe to drop but the vineyard looks great.”

“Even we didn’t fully realize what we had; we knew the sun and warmth was good for the grapes,” Haas said. “But how cool the nights are has been great for the white wines, which have very much outperformed our expectations.”

Wine 101 The walk into the Tablas Creek vineyard is straight uphill where only a thin layer of top soil covers the calcareous earth. Strategic plantings offer each varietal the specific sun aspect they need.

The steep, north facing slope has Grenache blanc and syrah – which also is an eastern facing slope – to stay cooler. Mourvedre, Rousanne and Picpoul run down to Tablas Creek on the southeast slope, while Grenache gets a sunny, western facing slope.

Even when harvest wraps up and vines are getting ready to go dormant for the winter, Haas marveled at the hearty green canopy of Grenache.

“It’s very leafy,” Haas said. “The canopy provides protection and photosynthesis. But it always [looks] healthy and happy. Everything else is red by November. Not Grenache. It’s yellow and green and thinks it’s spring. It grows easy but is also easy to overproduce and end up diluted. Grenache needs warmth and has a thin skin and not too many tannins.”

Schelkopf: Tell me about the show.

Osmond: The show has been voted best show in Las Vegas three years in a row. This is kind of the Vegas show that we are bringing to Chicago. We were at the Allstate Arena last year for a Christmas show, and it was really fun. But this is a very different show. It is kind of tailored for the venue.

We’ve been very blessed to work with some incredible people. Donny and I have kind of that variety thing in our blood, and we leave ourselves on stage.

Schelkopf: So for people not that familiar with the show, what should they expect?

Osmond: This year is our fifth decade of performing consistently, so you have five decades of material that will be shoved into the show. People remember you when they last saw you. Some people remem-

Schelkopf: I grew up on the “Donny & Marie” variety show, and it just seems like there always has been a strong connection between you and Donny. What do you think it is?

Osmond: The only other brother and sister I knew that performed together were The Carpenters. Maybe everybody relates to that.

Eric Schelkopf: Great to talk to you. I actually interviewed one of your brothers, Jimmy Osmond, last fall, when he was performing in Batavia with his brothers Merrill and Jay. Marie Osmond: Oh, I’m so sorry. No, I’m teasing.

The other thing is that I think we have continued to work hard over the years to stay viable, whether it is performing at The Flamingo in Las Vegas or that I have co-hosted with the ladies at “The Talk.”

I write books and am a New York Times bestselling author.

I think you have to stay current, and keep working hard.

I’ve done shows with other people and I do my own shows, and we both work on our solo careers. But there is a really interesting chemistry between Donny and Marie.

Schelkopf: As you said, you are going through five decades in the show. Was it hard to determine what songs to do?

Osmond: You’ll see a variety.

People want to hear “Paper Roses” and “Puppy Love.”

But I even do an operatic piece in the show. So it’s very eclectic and different.

There’s something for every age when you come to the show. It really is kind of a walk down five decades.

Schelkopf: And I’m sure you are going to be doing the hit, “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock ‘N Roll.”

When you first performed the song, did you ever imagine it would turn into the hit it did?

Osmond: Heavens no. Like right now, Too Faced cosmetics has a new campaign out, called ... Country/Rock N Roll, where they use me as the face of the whole cosmetic line.

Who knew that the song would be such a hit? I think the show “The Voice” did a whole thing around the song. Donny and I were laughing and saying, ‘Well, I guess we started something, didn’t we?’

Schelkopf: Why do you think the song connected so well with people?

Osmond: You know, I don’t know. I was having country hits, and Donny was having adult contemporary hits.

I think we have a lot of country music lovers in this country, and I think we have a lot that love rock ’n’ roll. And I think nowadays, they can love both.

Schelkopf: You were recently on “The Talk” as a co-host. How was that experience?

Osmond: Well, I enjoy television. And the ladies on there are really fun. I think that we kind of blend in.

I’m very flattered that they keep asking me back.

Vikings center back Drew Klaus takes a different approach in sizing up this season. While he thinks the team’s offense is capable of being more productive, he’d also like to see a seasoned Geneva back line tighten the screws on opponents even more.

“Last year as a team, we lost at least six games, like 1-0,” Klaus said. “Our defense is there, we just can’t have the mental lapses at some points of the game to let it up. If we can get those out of the way, then I definitely think teams

All four projected starting Geneva defenders have starting experience, although Matt Sweet missed much of last season recovering from a concussion.

Sweet is back as Klaus’ partner in the middle of the defense this season, another source of optimism that the Vikings will be a tricky group to score upon this season.

“He’s like the most vocal kid out there and he’s healthy, so hopefully he can stay healthy all season,” Klaus said of Sweet.

Right back Matt D’Onofrio and left back Ethan Nims, both seniors, also started for much of last season, giving the Vikings one of the most experienced back lines in the area.

Geneva’s prospects for minimizing opponents’ scoring also took a turn for the better with the return of junior goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull to the program. At 6-foot-6, Turnbull even towers over the 6-4 Klaus as the tallest member of the team.

Turnbull was three inches shorter when he last suited up for the Vikings – mostly at the lower levels – as a freshman.

He focused on club play with Chicago Fire Academy in sitting out his sophomore year.

Turnbull said he missed playing high school soccer and is ready to make use of that added height when the Vikings’ season begins Tuesday at Glenbard East. “[The added inches] help me on crosses, definitely, to get above the other team, to help dominate in the air, and just give me a little bit of extra height just to reach some of those high balls and reach farther in the goal, so it helps a lot there,” Turnbull said.

Vikings coach Ryan Estabrook spoke highly of Turnbull, who wears size 16 shoes.

“He’s really everything you want out of a goalkeeper,” Estabrook said. “He’s got size, he’s got athleticism and he’s a student of the game.”

While defense and goalkeeping appear to be strengths, Estabrook also likes the Vikings’ potential to click on the attack.

Senior Jason Lagger is the team’s leader in the midfield, flanked by Calen Colbert and Matt Luetzen, while Estabrook also likes the progress he’s detected from goal-scoring threats Matt Waldoch and Ryan Anderson.

“I can’t really quantify how much Ryan Anderson’s confidence level has improved and also how much Matt Wal-

doch’s athleticism improved,” Estabrook said.

The Vikings hope that collection of talent is enough to make for a higher-scoring team, even with the graduation of former standout Beck Nebergall.

If need be, though, the Vikings won’t be afraid to play more 1-0 matches – only with the results swinging the other way this season.

“I feel like we’ll be tough,” Turnbull said. “A lot of experience back there. We’ll be looking good at the back.”

Loconsole, 24, limited the Cougars to one hit in 12⁄3 innings of relief, mixing a 90 to 94 mph fastball with his breaking pitches as he’s done all season. Bees manager Bill Richardson said Loconsole was on track for a late-season promotion to Advanced-A Inland Empire in the parent Los Angeles Angels system, but will remain with playoff-bound Burlington to gain postseason experience.

“I’m dying to see how his pitches play at the higher level,” Richardson said.

The Angels drafted Loconsole in the 20th round in 2013. He’s 5-4 with a 1.71 ERA in 30 games over 63 innings this season, striking out 46 and walking 14.

GENEVA – Catcher Cael Brockmeyer opened auditions for the Cougars’ latest late-game star with a game-tying single in Wednesday’s eighth inning.

Aided by a little luck, second baseman Danny Lockhart secured the role one batter later as Burlington counterpart Kody Eaves’ error on a potential double play allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Shortstop Carlos Penalver (RBI single) and center fielder Jeffrey Baez (two-run home run) took their turns next, by which time the Cougars had all but seized their 10th Cael Brockmeyer straight win. In beating the Bees, 7-3, the club again presented a deep ensemble cast to address the feat.

“I mean, really, our biggest thing is no one’s trying to be the hero. No one’s trying to be the one guy who Danny takes over,” LockLockhart hart said this week.

“If you look at this team, we’re not full of prospects. We’re just a team that finds a way to win.

“Whether it’s the left fielder today or the Jasvir first baseman tomorRakkar row, or our pitching picks up our hitting or our hitting picks up our pitching, we just seem to find a way every day to kind of put out our best performance, and it seems to be working so far.”

“So far” is modest, especially considering the numerous gaudy win statistics that have mounted all season.

Wednesday’s five-run, eighth inning rally propelled the Cougars to 38-20 in the second half, 83-45 overall and 50-15 at home. With 12 regular season games remaining before the Midwest League playoffs start Sept.

3, the Cougars are five wins from tying the 2001 club’s single-season record for victories.

The parent Cubs have promoted 11 players from Class-A Kane County to Advanced-A Daytona this

includes nine series sweeps – Johnson said, “It’s a good thing to have to address daily.”

His words easily could have applied to Rakkar’s sterling Midwest League start or a persistently resilient attack.

On Monday, the Cougars won, 2-1, in 10 innings as left fielder Shawon Dunston Jr. singled home the winning run with his namesake, a former Cubs All-Star infielder, in the stands.

Tuesday’s two-run eighth provided the difference in a 4-3 win against the Bees (26-32, 64-63) setting the stage for Wednesday’s rally against lefty Cole Swanson and righty Ben Carlson.

“Guys made mistakes early and we capitalized and [had] timely hitting by every guy on our team,” Dunston Jr. said. “We just keep chipping away when the bullpen shuts down, and that’s pretty much about it.”

Burlington knows the brunt of the Cougars’ surge too well, losing each of the clubs’ nine meetings this season.

The Bees host the Cougars for three games next week, and could be a potential playoff opponent after winning the Western Division’s first-half wild card.

The Cougars were division champions.

“They’ve been really good games, believe me, as far as player development is concerned,” Bees manager Bill Richardson said. “I’m excited as all heck every time we play them.

It’s a class team, class manager, class GM. So I could play these guys every game. It’s terrific. A lot of respect for everything they do here, and hopefully, when they come to our place, they feel the same way.”

The Cougars appealed to their familiarity with Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as one catalyst for their home success.

Comfortable clubhouses, host family security and favorite hangouts evidently can be as advantageous as the final at-bat.

“Baseball’s a big game of routines,” Brockmeyer said, “so once you get in a good routine, you can find a good one at home.”

In this case, it’s arrive at the ballpark, complete early work, eat, stretch and win.

Then wait your turn to grin and talk about it.

Conte eager to return to mix on the defense

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – Considering all Chris Conte has endured over the past seven months, perhaps the toughest part has been not being physically able to completely move on from his recent past.

Conte underwent offseason surgery to repair his right shoulder, forcing him to miss the Bears’ entire offseason program and most of training camp before being cleared to return Aug. 10. At the same time, he was left to deal with a barrage of criticism leveled against him for his play in the Bears’ regular-season loss to the Packers. As much as he has tried to ignore outside opinion, constantly being reminded of his shortcomings made not being able to get back on the field even more difficult.

Coach Marc Trestman said Wednesday he expects the veteran safety to play in Friday’s preseason game in Seattle. How much time Conte will see or what his role will be has yet to be determined.

But after months of not being able to get onto the field, having his return only days away has brought Conte’s stressful offseason to an end.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Conte said Wednesday. “[It’s] just been a lot of time watching other guys play. But I get the opportunity this week to just go out there and play football.”

Conte has made 40 starts over the past three seasons.

Even though he wasn’t cleared until this month to return to the field and the ongoing competition between veterans Ryan Mundy, Adrian Wilson, Danny McCray and rookie Brock Vereen has gone on without Conte, Bears coaches left the door open that he again could move back into a starting role.

Trestman said he likes what he has seen from Conte.

“He’s had a good week of practice,” Trestman said.

“He’s running around. He’s involved in terms of what we’re doing. So we’ll see.”

At times, Conte has found it difficult to remain engaged mentally, especially lately, when he felt like his body was ready for him to rejoin his teammates on the field.

Despite remaining sidelined, Conte has been an active participant in the safeties’ meeting room, digesting defensive back coach Jon Hoke’s game plan.

His teammates are impressed with how Conte has kept himself in the game, albeit while doing it while being physically unable to go.

“It’s been cool to see,” McCray said Wednesday. “I know how it feels not to be able to practice and play, and so it’s good to see him get out there and get his feet back under him. It looks like he’s moving pretty fast.”

Conte’s biggest test will come Friday against the Seahawks. Trestman is excited to see whether Conte can show coaches that he is worthy of the consideration they’ve given him to return to the starting lineup. Physically, Conte insists he is ready, which he said will aid in mentally shaking off last year’s struggles.

Asked Wednesday whether it’s easier said than done to put last year behind him, Conte paused, considering his words.

“I don’t know,” Conte said.

“It’s just something where you just have to go out there and play football. I don’t know if it’s easy, hard or what, but it’s just something you have to do.

“It’s a different defense now and it’s a new year, and you have to treat it that way. I just have to try and get out there and do my job.”

If you saw an American Indian walking across the street, would you yell out, “Hey, Redskin, you dropped your hat”?

I don’t believe you would, no matter how strongly you feel that the Washington Redskins should be able to keep their nickname. And I don’t believe Mike Ditka would, either, even though he has come out strongly on the side of intolerance, whether he realizes it or not.

The say-anything coach went off on those of us who want to see the Redskins nickname go the way of medical bloodletting. In an interview with RedskinsHistorian.com – you always save up your best stuff for RedskinsHistorian.com – Ditka railed against the “political correct idiots” who find the nickname offensive and want team owner Daniel Snyder to come up with a replacement.

This isn’t about political correctness.

This is about compassion for people who don’t have a voice.

This isn’t about whether you’re liberal or conservative, as Ditka seems to believe.

This is about whether you’re human.

The reason most of us, including Ditka, would never call a Native American “Redskin’’ to his or her face is because we know, at some level, that it’s disrespectful.

This is the last time you’ll see me use the term “Redskins” in one of my columns, unless it’s about the nickname controversy. It has been bothering me for a long time. I’ve written often about how wrong it is that we still have a sports franchise using a derogatory nickname for Native Americans.

But there I was last season, using “Redskins” over and over again in a column about the Bears’ 45-41 loss to Washington. Why? Laziness, mostly, an insidious thing.

There’s not much worse than a lack of action in the face of a wrong.

But Ditka has woken me up, shaken me out of my stupor. And I would call on the Sun-Times to stop using the nickname, as well.

Although I don’t pretend to speak for everyone at the newspaper, I’d simply ask whether it would be palatable if we inserted any other skin color into the nickname – the Washington Blackskins, the Washington Whiteskins, the Washington Yellowskins, etc. I think we know the answer.

Ironically, skin color is one of the issues Ditka brought up in his harangue.

“We’re going to let the liberals of the world run this world,” he said. “It was said out of reverence, out of pride to the American Indian. Even though it was

called a Redskin, what are you going to call them, a Brownskin? This is so stupid it’s appalling, and I hope that owner keeps fighting for it and never changes it, because the Redskins are part of an American football history, and it should never be anything but the Washington Redskins. That’s the way it is.

“It’s been the name of the team since the beginning of football. It has nothing to do with something that happened lately, or something that somebody dreamed up.

This was the name, period.

Leave it alone. These people are silly – asinine, actually, in my opinion.”

The argument that the nickname shouldn’t be changed because the franchise has been around a long time is a head shaker. We’ve changed lots of things that

once were considered acceptable. Slavery comes to mind.

We’ve evolved.

If Native Americans don’t like the term Redskins, that’s all anybody needs to know on the issue. If any Irish Americans are offended by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, then I’d suggest they speak up. I haven’t heard any complaints – perhaps because we of Irish heritage are not living in poverty on reservations.

I don’t think this is about a crazy old coot sounding off, as it’s being portrayed in some corners. Ditka is saying out loud what a lot of people, regardless of age, are thinking. (By the way, once you start making fun of someone’s advanced age, you’re not so different from the people making fun of Native Americans. You’re trafficking in an -ism, too.)

The U.S. Patent Court in June ruled that the Washington franchise’s federal trademarks should be canceled, meaning others can make money off the “Redskins” nickname. It was the first real shot across Snyder’s bow. The rest of it – Native Americans’ protests, columnists’ screeds, etc. – have done nothing to move the owner. Perhaps he’ll understand the loss of cold cash.

In all fairness, I don’t believe Snyder would say to a passing American Indian, “Hey, Redskin, you dropped your hat.” I believe he’d say, “Hey, Redskin, you dropped your headdress.”

A scholar in the Second People’s Republic of China enumerates the reasons why scientists failed to avert the catastrophic environmental crisis that redrew the world and annihilated millions.

The scholar does not dwell on the scope of the disaster that dates back to 2093.We do learn that rising sea levels overtake some countries, while others, like the United States, reduced in size and resources, regroup with lesser clout and fewer resources. China, we discover, emerges as a world leader.

On the tercentenary anniversary of Western civilization’s demise, the scholar searches for reasons why scientists didn’t act when data gathered, analyzed, published and shared at conferences all but guaranteed the disaster. The scientists, who require at least a 95 percent confidence level in their work, are too reticent in the face of ever-alarming data.

A neoliberal stronghold in Western civilization — particularly the United States and Canada — is also to blame.

Opposed to any governmental involvement in free enterprise, ideologues thwart any centralized attempts to intervene in the degradation of the environment. The absence of an empowered government means that it cannot quickly respond to the growing climate crisis in the same way that China, with its traditionally strong centralized government, can.

archaic terms and extensive notes. The book is based on existing science and posits a strong point of view — global warming is real and dangerous; thus, there are those who may find it objectionable.

It will preach to the proverbial choir. Or it may land with a quiet thud. Or it may live on to taunt us with an “I told you so” that falls on defeated ears.

They understand that the best we doctors can do is give them estimates. If their condition is incurable, they want an estimate of how much longer they might live with a particular treatment.

And they want to know what symptoms they might suffer both without treatment and from the treatment.

After they get this information, they want to make the decision about what to do. They often discuss this with the family and friends they trust before making their decision.

You could become a hero Dr. Wallace: Last night my older brother became a hero. Our family was celebrating my grandfather’s birthday at a restaurant when a neighboring diner got something stuck in his throat and he couldn’t breathe.

He stood up and tried to gasp for air, but he was unsuccessful.

No one at his table knew what to do, but someone yelled, “Please help! This man can’t breathe!”

My older brother hurried over and used the Heimlich maneuver. After two jerks, a piece of meat flew out of the man’s mouth.

The poor man was weak and very scared, but he was alive with no real damage to him.

His wife was so happy with emotion that she hugged my brother for quite some time.

The owner of the restaurant was also thrilled that the choking victim was saved from a certain death.

Our tab for our family celebration was over $150, and the owner refused to accept payment. That was a very nice gesture.

My brother learned the Heimlich maneuver when he was a paramedic.

Is it possible you could print how to successfully use this method on someone who is choking? Last night my brother taught all of our family members how to do it. We all took turns practicing on one another.

Even my grandparents participated.

The American Red Cross says that before the Heimlich maneuver is applied, you should have the person stand and hang his head.

Then give him four sharp slaps between the shoulder blades.

If this should not clear the breathing lane, use the Heimlich maneuver as follows: Stand behind the choking victim and wrap your arms around his waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it thumb side against his abdomen between the rib cage and the navel. Grasp the fist with your other hand and press with a quick upward thrust.

If this still doesn’t get the job done, do it again and press a little harder.

This really works!

Since I have learned this easy maneuver, I’ve had to use it twice, on a friend at dinner and on a stranger in a restaurant.

Teens, please practice this maneuver on your parents now so you can use it in an emergency. Don’t be overly aggressive as you could break a rib or two.

Practice makes perfect and in this case can save a precious life.

Everyone should learn how to successfully use the Heimlich maneuver. It doesn’t take long to learn, and it could make you a hero!

In this modern auction, North’s fit-showing redouble indicated exactly three-card spade support. South’s threeheart cue-bid was a game-force.

Four hearts was a control-bid (cue-bid), showing first-round control in that suit and expressing slam interest. Four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood, the reply indicating three key cards (here, two aces and the spade king).

South would like to draw trumps and establish dummy’s club suit by cashing the ace and king and ruffing down the queen. However, even if that worked, there would be no immediate dummy entry to get to the last three clubs. Instead, South must hope West has the club queen.

South wins with his heart ace and cashes the spade ace.

But then he must not proceed too quickly. When West drops the 10, declarer must carefully unblock dummy’s nine. Next, South plays a spade to dummy’s queen, finesses his eight on the way back, and draws East’s last trump. Finally, declarer runs the club 10 and makes his contract. He takes five spades, one heart and six clubs.
