LOCAL NEWS County police respond to several vehicle burglaries

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Several vehicles throughout the area were reported burglarized within the past week, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The Lily Lake area was the hardest hit, with three residents reporting burglaries Friday and one resident reporting such a crime Monday.

According to reports, the Friday crimes happened overnight in the 5N700 block of Autumn Court and the 6N300 and 43W400 blocks of Prairie Valley Drive.

A computer bag, iPad, sunglasses and navigation system were stolen from an unlocked Chevrolet Silverado; an iPhone charger was taken from a Ford Explorer; and a set of keys was missing from an unlocked Ford F150, police reported.

The burglary reported Monday involved an unlocked Ford Flex in the 43W700 block of Twilight Lane. A computer, tablet, passport and pen reportedly were stolen.

On Saturday, a resident of the 39W200 block of Longmeadow Lane in Campton Hills reported a burglary to an unlocked 2013 Audi, where $300 was taken from a wallet, police reported. An $800 bicycle also was reported stolen from the garage.

Multiple cars and structures reportedly were broken into in the 33W600 block of Route 38 in Geneva Township. A report filed Saturday indicated three vehicles, a trailer and a shed

were affected. Stolen items reportedly included $2,000 in electrical equipment, $18,000 in tool sets and $300 in copper tubing.

In an email, sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Pat Gengler offered this advice to car owners: “Lock your cars and take any and all valuables inside.”

LOCAL BRIEF Forest Preserve District plans program series

ST. CHARLES – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has planned sessions in the “Nature Tykes” and “Little Naturalists” program series. In “Nature Tykes,” 3-year-olds explore the natural world through a variety of activities with a parent or caregiver.

Sessions include stories, nature hikes, songs, games and crafts. On Aug. 27 “Nature’s Noisemakers” will be the theme. On Sept. 24 “Animals

on the Move” will be the topic, and on Oct. 22 “Oh, Nuts!” will be the theme.

“Nature Tykes” programs run from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. at Creek Bend Nature Center, located within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.

Registration is $5 a child, a session. “Little Naturalists” is an hour-long program for 4-year-olds.

Creating the proper balance in the amount of fat and muscle you have is the biggest key to toning your body. That makes perfect sense, but how do you create that balance to get the body you desire?

While there are many different things you can do to improve your health and wellbeing and help tone your body, it’s difficult to determine how significantly each will benefit you. Top Table restaurant closes in St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A downtown St. Charles business that opened in September has shut its doors, according to its owners. Top Table restaurant, at 1 W. Illinois St., Suite 170, St. Charles, closed to business in mid-July, co-owner Nathan Drafall said on Wednesday.

The restaurant had an “excellent” July 4, but the quantity of customers on a daily basis had not been as high as expected, Drafall said.

“We threw every chance we had at it hoping we could keep the doors open, but unfortunately we were a little too far gone at that time,” he said.

Drafall ran the restaurant with his wife, Amanda, and his mother, Cynthia, was a silent partner. With no other financial backers, Drafall said their entire life savings went into the restaurant, and now they have gone broke.

With seven children between them, Drafall said there’s been a couple of good friends and extended family members who have helped them with their needs.

Batavia residents protest against Prairie State energy deal

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Sylvia Keppel said she believes the city got a bad deal when it invested in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus.

“Our costs are going to continue to escalate,” said the Batavia resident, who on Wednesday participated in a demonstration against the city’s involvement in Prairie State. The demonstration was held before a meeting of the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency board at the Batavia Government Center in downtown Batavia.

In 2005, the agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State. Geneva and Rochelle are other members.

A federal judge last week dismissed a class-action lawsuit brought by nine utility users/ ratepayers from Batavia about the city’s investment in Prairie

Defendants in the suit included the Indiana Municipal Power Agency; IMPA Service Corp., the consulting division of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency hired by the city of Batavia to study the Prairie State Energy Campus project; Raj Rao, president and chief executive officer of IMPA Service Corp. and chairman of the Prairie State Generating Company Management Committee; Chicago-based consulting company Sargent and Lundy LLC, which was hired to study the quality and quantity of the coal at the Prairie State Energy Campus; and Skelly and Loy Inc., a Pennsylvania-based consulting firm hired to study the quality and quantity of the coal at the Prairie State Energy Campus.

The judge gave the plaintiffs 21 days to file an amended complaint. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke declined to comment on the judge’s opinion.

AC units damaged in Geneva Township

GENEVA TOWNSHIP – Four Geneva Township residents were without air conditioning after someone cut and removed wires from their AC units, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Office reports dated Saturday and Sunday.

The crimes reportedly happened in the 38W400 block of Berquist Drive, the 0N600 and 0N500 blocks of Sounders Drive and the 38W500 block of Callighan Place.

Residents described similar situations to police. They had been away from their residences, either for vacation or for the day, and returned home to a warm house and inoperable air conditioning unit, according to reports for two of the incidents.

Employees from heating and cooling companies reportedly identified the problem – wires had been cut and removed.

One such employee said whoever did it had to be familiar with air conditioning units because of the precision of the cut and the knowledge of which wire to cut to stop the entire unit from working, police reported.

In one report, the missing wire’s value was estimated at $200. Homeowners can take some steps to protect their air conditioner units, sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email. Moving the units would be a difficult and expensive, he wrote, so installing a motion-sensor light would be a cheaper alternative.

“A fenced in yard is a big deterrent,” he wrote, adding landscaping can help hide the unit.

The event – which features antique, classic and modern automobiles – is set

Joan was an active member of Fox Valley Presbyterian Church in Geneva. President of Batavia Women’s Club, President and handicapper of Par Pals Golf League for many years. In 2012 she reached the big achievement of scoring her first hole in one.

DOUGLAS L. ZENI Douglas L. Zeni died on July 16, 2015, from medical complications after several weeks of intensive care at the St. Alexius Hospital in Saint Louis. He was 67 years old.

Douglas was a 1966 graduate of Geneva Community High School, where he served as sophomore class president, and was co-captain of the football team and President of the G Club during his senior year. He was also a phenomenal baseball catcher in high school and often played in intramural softball games held at the old Geneva McKinley Park during the summertime. Doug was active in his church’s youth group at the Fox Valley Presbyterian Church in Geneva. After high school he at-

tended Southern Illinois University.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Leno and Mary Zeni.

He is survived by his siblings, Barbara Zeni, Paul Zeni (husband to Mia Nielsen Zeni), Kathleen (Zeni) Zarn (wife to David Zarn) and Thomas Zeni; his nephew, Adam Zarn (husband to Alyssa Zarn); and his niece, Anna Zarn.

Doug was a kind and loving son, brother, and uncle, who was struck early in life by the disease known as schizophrenia, a devastating illness that caused him much suffering throughout his life. Still, he faced his difficulties as bravely as he could. He will always be remembered with much love and affection by those who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Geneva, 2300 South Street, Geneva.

County supports artwork idea for bus shelters

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Gimme Shelter, a program bringing student artwork to bus shelters along Randall Road, has received county support.

“I think this is a great idea,” said Kane County Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin. “Maybe the state will catch on.”

The Geneva Cultural Arts Commission initiative will place artwork by Geneva High School students on bus shelters in the city, Chairman Tim Vetang told the Transportation Committee on Tuesday.

The artwork, which will be installed professionally, will cover three of the four rear shelter panels, leaving one for Pace schedule information, he said. He noted the side wing panels will be untouched as to not impede visibility for riders and bus drivers.

Vetang said the arts

commission will cover the costs of printing the art on a graphic cling vinyl or other material that won’t damage the structures.

Noting the county’s prohibition on advertising, Vetang said no wording will be allowed on the artwork.

An insert within the artwork will, however, contain the artist’s name and title, according to a flier about the program.

T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, asked Vetang about the type of art the commission expects to get. He provided suggestions, such as palm trees and beaches during the winter.

Founded in 2006, the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission seeks to create diverse cultural art experiences that engage the community.

Its events include the Geneva Film Festival, Shakespeare in the Park and the Steeple Walk.

Age is usually one of the factors most strongly associated with many eye diseases that cause “visual impairment,” defined as sight loss that is caused by eye disease, injury, or a medical condition that cannot be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. While there is no stopping the march of time, there may be some other ways to prevent visual impairment. According to recent research involving nearly 5,000 adults aged 43 to 84 over a 25-year period, those who exercised three or more times per week were 58% less likely to develop vision problems than their inactive counterparts. In addition, occasional (less than one serving in an average week) drinkers were 49% less likely to develop eye problems than nondrinkers.

P.S. According to the study mentioned above, heavy drinkers and heavy smokers were somewhat more likely than nondrinkers and nonsmokers to develop visual impairment.

Fox Valley Court Watch, a nonprofit organization, is providing a training session from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 18, at the Kane County Judicial Center for interested volunteers in Kane County.

Fox Valley Court Watch monitors the judicial process in domestic violence courts in the Kane and Kendall county judicial centers. Court Watch observers are volunteers from the community, trained in domestic violence dynamics and court procedure, and they monitor, evaluate and advocate for improving services for domestic abuse victims.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have an email address and daily email access. They also are required to attend one court session to observe the Court Watch function before making a final commitment.

Woman files suit against Aldi Claims she was injured after lemon juice display toppled over

burn resident Frances Kitz, who seeks more than $50,000 in damages from Blue Goose Market, 300 S. Second St., St. Charles, according to a lawsuit filed in late June.

Kitz bought a slice of cherry pie sold at the store May 29, according to the suit. When she bit into the slice the next day, she made contact with an object “later discovered to be cherry pits or other hard foreign matter,” Casas wrote in the suit.

As a result of biting into the pie slice, Kitz was injured and subject to pain, medical/ dental bills and may continue to suffer in the future, Casas wrote.

Blue Goose Market President Paul Lencioni had previously said that to his knowledge, no other Blue Goose customers have complained or shared concerns about the cherry pie slices.

BATAVIA – A Batavia woman is suing for more than $50,000 in damages after she said she was injured at an Aldi store in Batavia in 2013 when a display of one-quartsized lemon juice bottles apparently toppled over.

Carrie Markuson filed the suit Aug. 11 in Kane County Circuit Court. According to the suit, Markuson was shopping at the Aldi store at 451 N. Randall Road, Batavia, on Aug. 16, 2013, when she was injured because of the display.

“The lemon juice display presented an unreasonable risk of harm to the people on the premises, including [Markuson], which risk, unbeknownst to [Markuson], included the instability of various bottles on the stack of bottles,” the suit stated.

According to the suit, Aldi was negligent in several ways, including failing to stack the bottles of lemon juice in a safe manner; failing to stack the bottles of lemon juice with restraints to prevent each of the bottles from rolling and/ or falling; stacking the bottles of lemon juice in a dangerous manner in areas of the store open to customers; and failing to adequately warn customers with signs, banners or placards about the hazards of falling merchandise in its store.

Her attorney, Kirsten Casas of Aurora, would not say how Markuson was injured.

“We would prefer to litigate this case in the courtroom rather than in the media,” Casas said.

An Aldi spokesperson declined to comment on the suit.

A hearing on the case is set for Oct. 29.

St. Charles resident competes on ‘Sports Jeopardy!’

“My now-wife [Payal] pretty much said ‘you better go, and I’m coming with you,’ ” Varde said.

The St. Charles couple flew to Culver City, California, for less than 48 hours so Neel Varde could appear on an episode of “Sports Jeopardy!” that premiered early Wednesday morning on the free online TV network Crackle, a unit of Sony Pictures Television.

This is Varde’s second appearance on a “Jeopardy!” program. He was on the original “Jeopardy!” in 2010.

“It was pretty much you know the material or you don’t,” Varde said. “I’m a pretty big sports fan and used to do bar trivia.”

Varde in 2014 completed an extended audition for “Sports Jeopardy!” that included an online test and then a separate screen test in Chicago.

“It was a fun experience,” Varde said.

‘You are enough’ A couple weeks ago, I was scrolling through quotes online from some of my favorite Broadway performers. Most of them were your predictable inspirational quotes about being yourself, doing your best and overcoming challenges. However, as I scrolled down further, I noticed a quote often cited by Sierra Boggess, who has played major roles in “The Little Mermaid,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “A Little Princess.”

“You are enough. You are so enough, it’s unbelievable how enough you are.”

A further perusal of quotes associated with Sierra Boggess revealed more inspiration and positivity, but I couldn’t get the initial one out of my head. One word in particular stuck with me: enough. What exactly does it mean to be enough? Is it getting an A on the big test? Is it landing the hotshot job and making millions of dollars? Is it having that ideal boyfriend or girlfriend? Is it looking flawless every day, with clear skin and the perfect body type?

These are the standards society has set for us, the ideals we must fulfill in order to be considered “enough.” The media, our peers and collective social pressure all tell us that “enough” comes from something we do, something we achieve, or even the way we look.

We feel this constant need to be better at everything, because our current state isn’t “enough” to meet that unattainable standard.

Somehow, I don’t think that’s what Sierra was getting at when she issued those words of inspiration. No, that quote is built on the idea that we are enough just the way we are. The world may tell us that we need to strive to be prettier, smarter and better, but the way Sierra seems to use it, we don’t need to do anything other than be ourselves. In fact, the way we are is more than enough!

I’m a high school student, so the concept of peer pressure and needing to succeed certainly isn’t foreign to me. From the impor-

And from what I’ve noticed, everyone else I encounter, whether student or adult, is dealing with some type of challenge. We’re all trying to reach these societal standards that seem more and more impossible to achieve as time goes on.

So where did Sierra get the hope she was likely feeling when she noted that we are, in fact, enough? It certainly doesn’t seem like anyone’s capable of reaching that impossibly high criteria.

It could be because Sierra realized the truth: that you don’t have to reach that standard.

You don’t have to be perfect or achieve everything society says you should. Because, like Sierra has passed along, you are enough.

You are beautiful, talented and smart just the way you are. Sure, it’s awesome and even beneficial to strive for greatness. It’s great to push yourself to be the best you can be, surrounding yourself with people and influences that encourage you to do so. For me, that’s my family, friends and especially my faith. With influences like this behind you, aiming for a higher standard can be a good thing. But don’t let negative outside pressure cause you to stray from who you really are.

Because, to quote those words often cited by Sierra Boggess, words I’m forever grateful for: “You are enough. You are so enough, it’s unbelievable how enough you are.”

And as you read those words, I hope you start to believe them.

Northwestern football players are not employees BLOOMBERG NEWS Faced with a question that didn’t belong before it in the first place – are students on athletic scholarships employees of the colleges they play for? – the National Labor Relations Board has unanimously decided to follow the most sensible option: It punted.

Football players at Northwestern University who had earned a scholarship (worth about $61,000 annually) argued that they are employees with organizing rights.

Under NCAA rules, athletic scholarships have long served as one-year contracts that were renewed by coaches – or not. If an athlete didn’t perform up to expectations or got injured, his or her scholarship could be revoked – and with it, any hope of completing school and earning a diploma.

It has been far too easy for schools to treat scholarship athletes as contractors rather than as students, leading to cries of exploitation – and a push for labor rights.

Last year, the regional director of the labor relations board sided with the Northwestern players, concluding that the potential revocation of scholarships constituted a coercive relationship.

It was surely no coincidence that, several months after his ruling, the Big Ten conference, which includes North-

western, became the first to guarantee athletic scholarships for four years.

Earlier this year, the five major conferences followed the Big Ten’s lead.

They also began allowing schools to provide scholarship athletes with several thousand dollars in living expenses.

That change came after a federal judge recommended such a policy last summer, as part of a decision striking down the NCAA’s prohibition on athletes profiting from the use of their names and images.

Those moves by the NCAA made it easier for the NLRB to avoid ruling on the merits of the Northwestern case. The board concluded that because it governs only private employers, and because the vast majority of major college football programs are at public institutions, a ruling “would not promote stability in labor relations.” In other words, a finding in favor of the football players would have upset the level playing field – at least in terms of labor law – that exists for public and private schools.

True enough, though the board could have gone further by concluding that college athletes are not employees with organizing rights. That doesn’t mean, however, that student- athletes don’t have real concerns. They do, particularly concerning health care. And it shouldn’t take a federal lawsuit or another union organizing effort for the NCAA to listen.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Taste of France comes to downtown Geneva Haché Moderne Brasserie opened Aug. 10

The restaurant opened Aug. 10 at 524 W. State St. The space is the former location of Urban Grille, which closed in 2013.

Haché Moderne Brasserie serves modern cuisine with traditional French influences. Restaurant owners Peter Karl Youngren and Irina Haydon of Naperville also own Paris Bistro in Naperville.

“Our desire was to complement the many great offerings already available in Geneva,” Youngren said. “This city is known by ‘foodies’ everywhere as the place to be on a Saturday night for a great meal.

Our menu is based off of our passion for French cuisine.”

The menu includes old world classics, such as chicken roulade and baeckeoffe duck confit, along with new world items, such as the super antioxidant salad and bison burger, Youngren said.

Tom Eckert is the restaurant’s executive chef. He previously was the executive chef for Hopvine Brewing Company in Aurora.

“Tom has been a longtime friend, and we’ve been looking for an opportunity to work together for a few years,” Youngren said. “He’s incredibly detail-oriented and he has a wonderful creative process in his menu design. The chef community is surprisingly small, and he has one of the best reputations among his peers.”

The restaurant uses fresh, locally grown vegetables to create a farm-to-table dining experience.

“The farm-to-table concept is at the heart of everything Haché is doing,” Youngren said. “The restaurant is a celebration of many local businesses in the area and their incredible accomplishments. Almost all of our food and drink is from Geneva and the surrounding area. This is fundamental to providing fresh quality meals every single day.”

Everything on the restaurant’s menu is made available to-go through the Haché Marketplace. Those who want to pick up a bouquet of flowers with dinner can do so, as the restaurant has teamed up with Geneva-based Town and Country Gardens.

“Our collaboration with Town and Country Gardens was a no-brainer as many people who’ve come to the restaurant are either celebrating special occasions or are on a date and are often in need of beautiful flowers for a party,” Youngren said. “When in a hurry to host, you can pick up a cheese platter or large appetizers, a bottle of wine and flowers. Just like you would if you lived in France.”

For those with a sweet tooth, the restaurant offers a variety of desserts, such as the goat cheese cheesecake and gelato nocciolato. Pastry chef Paul Saucedo, from Geneva-based Cocoa Bean, prepares the desserts daily, Youngren said.

In September, Haché plans to open a sweet shop, which will feature desserts, as well as the restaurant’s ZiCaffe Italian coffee.

“I promise that any coffee connoisseurs will rave about it,” Youngren said.

Youngren and Haydon also believe in giving back to the community. Proceeds from every meal will be given to the anti-bullying group Hurt No More, which Youngren founded.

“A portion of all profits made at Haché go directly back into schools in the community; the notion of giving back charitably to the community in which you are conducting business is crucial to our philosophy,” Youngren said.

Cancer scare motivates Geneva singer to follow dreams

t has been said that the road to stardom is littered with broken hearts. That was nearly the case for Geneva resident Alyssa Parma, who experienced a devastating setback while her singing career was just getting off of the ground.

Parma started singing at the age of 2.

“From the time she started talking, she was singing,” Parma’s father, Sam, wrote. “We have a video of her singing a song about her baby sister into the mirror and making up the words as she went along ... . That was when we realized she loved to sing and be in the spotlight.”

Over the years, Parma explored her musical prowess through songwriting and entered suburban talent competitions, such as Geneva’s Got Talent and Lombard Idol, which further cultivated her dreams of singing professionally.

At the age of 16, the pop/country crooner’s career began to take shape after she made a vital connection with one of the Lombard Idol judges, Daniel Castady. Though Parma lost the singing competition, she gained a music mentor in Castady.

“She was the only person that day who I looked at and just saw an artist,” Castady said. “... This was somebody who I could see writing a song for and helping develop – just pointing her in the right direction, because somebody did that for me when I was about her age at the time and it made all the difference.”

A member of the Grammy-nominated, Chicago-area band The Fold, Castady offered the budding singer an insider’s perspective of the music industry, having been signed in the late-’90s to Madonna’s label, Maverick Records, while he was a member of the band Showoff.

“He’s taught me a lot about the music business and how to do things the right way and introduced me to so many people,” Parma said.

But, just as things seemed to be taking off for Parma, her story took an unpredictable turn.

Just two weeks after graduating from high school, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

“When you hear ‘cancer’ you think of dying; that was my first initial fear,” said Parma.

The lump in her throat was found during a routine physical examination that was a prerequisite for college. It had gone undetected for two years.

“Our reaction was more disbelief

than anything,” Parma’s father stated.

“As a parent, you spend your entire life making sure that your kids are safe. ...

Hearing that your child has cancer and realizing that you can’t do anything to prevent it was the hardest thing we have ever had to deal with.”

As if cancer wasn’t enough, a surgeon revealed to the family that there was a good chance that she would never sing again.

“I thought, ‘You just told me I have cancer, and now you’re going to tell me the one thing that makes me happy I can’t do anymore,” Parma said. “My reaction was to tell him, ‘Well, then who can I go to that is going to let me sing again?’”

Not singing was not an option for Parma, so the family sought the care of a University of Chicago specialist who ended up performing the surgery on her thyroid, Parma’s father stated.

Life quickly became a barrage of doctor appointments, treatment plans, medications, body scans and hours spent worrying and waiting to hear whether the treatment would work.

The treatment did work. And on New Year’s Eve, Parma received the news that she was cancer free.

“I appreciate life a lot more now – just everything; all of the experiences that I have,” said Parma, adding that beating cancer has allowed her to focus on what matters most – music. “Any time I go into the studio, I feel it more than I did when I was recording previously, just because it means something more to me now, because I almost had it taken away.”

With cancer behind her, music has taken center stage in Parma’s life once again.

Her diagnosis, Castady said, gave her a boost of motivation.

“One of the things that really endeared me to her more, as we kind of peeled the onion back, that she had been going through this battle with cancer,” Castady said. “So, watching her deal with that and watching her go through something so life-changing, just her amazing attitude through it all, really made me want to work that much harder and see her vision through.”

collection of songs that Parma co-wrote and recorded for a seven-track country/ pop crossover EP, entitled “Thank You.” Songs from the EP, which Parma describes as Taylor Swift-esque, are being released gradually, so as to give the public multiple opportunities to discover the music, Castady said.

The single, “Thank You,” is currently available on iTunes, and “Fight” – a song inspired by her fight with cancer – will be available by early September.

In December, Parma will perform her EP during a showcase concert in Nashville, which will expose her music

to record label representatives and publicists.

The concert will give Parma an opportunity to be signed to a record label, making her dream of singing professionally a reality.

“Life has a way of working itself out, and I believe that everything happens for a reason,” Parma said in a news release. “Things like cancer can either make or break you, and it’s really up to you if you want to move forward and fulfill your dreams or not. Cancer is just a small part of your life. It’s just one chapter, but it’s not your whole story.”

Players filling leadership roles

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Ryan Estabrook has been used to losing players each season, with this being his 12th season as the Geneva boys soccer coach.

But it’s usually losing players to graduation.

Estabrook and the Vikings were faced with a different challenge when senior goalkeeper and University of Notre Dame commit Duncan Turnbull elected to play club soccer year-round and not for the Vikings this fall.

“The opportunity Duncan has is awesome,” senior defender Drew Klaus said. “But we have a lot of guys that are here, stepping up as leaders on this team. He was going to be a big part of this team, but I think with the guys we have, it’s something we can certainly overcome.”

The Vikings will without a doubt have one of the more energetic groups to take the

field this season. During practice, the constant movement during drills has really fostered a sense of urgency with the squad, who all know the challenges that lie ahead.

But not only will Geneva – which fell in its regional championship to Benet, 2-1, last season – be without Turnbull, but it will also have some newcomers, as the Vikings call up nine sophomores to this year’s team.

Was that the plan? Or did Estabrook need to make adjustments based on how summer workouts went?

“A lot of times, sophomores get called up because the team needs depth or you’re missing a few players,” Estabrook said.

“We called these guys up because they are all really good.

They may not all get a ton of playing time, but they’ll help push guys for playing time if they don’t get it themselves.”

With inexperience often comes a learning curve. But with players such as Klaus,

midfielder and senior captain Derik Rush and forward Matt Waldoch returning to the Vikings lineup, there is certainly promise to right the ship quickly.

“I think there will be an adjustment period, for sure,” Waldoch said. “But coach always says we want to be playing our best soccer come the end of the season. So even with a learning curve early, I think we’ll make the changes and be right where we want to be come that time.”

The combination of youth and experience brings excitement to the Vikings, but also has given the team something to look forward to this season.

Even though finding out that Turnbull would not be playing came a little later in the offseason than usual, Estabrook is comfortable with everyone who has stepped in and will continue to step into new roles.

Jonathan Burke, St. Francis, Jr., GK Burke should be one of the top goalkeepers in the area after making the Chronicle’s honorable mention all-area team as a sophomore in 2014. The junior will have a strong group defensively in front of him this season, as well.

Drew Franklin, Kaneland, Sr., M Coach Scott Parillo chose to recognize Franklin among many of his strong senior leaders that he has seen step up during training. Parillo said the Knights will need to put in a lot of work to be successful this season.

Nick Roehl, St. Francis, Sr., M/F Roehl was the leading goal scorer for the Spartans last season with 16 goals. He and St. Francis are poised for a strong season after learning and being fully comfortable with second-year head coach Kevin Ward’s system.

Davis DiBiase, Batavia, Sr., M DiBiase figures have a bigger role for the Bulldogs after shining as a junior. Batavia will also have a lot of work to make up after graduating 12 seniors from last year’s sectional finalist.

Dylan Mientus, St. Charles North, Jr., F Mientus had a busy offseason with his club team, but is back with the North Stars. His skill set up top will make him difficult for defenses to cover this fall.

There is talent, but as Estabrook put it, it’s unproven talent. So as the season goes on, it will be on Klaus’ shoulders to carry the load and burden of leadership.

“There’s definitely a lot of positives with this team,” Estabrook said. “But everything

kind of hinges on Drew Klaus.

We have a lot of good players around him, but he’s probably the most important piece to our success this year.

“Between being a great leader and his tremendous ability defending the ball in the air, he’s really a rare breed and we’re lucky to have him.”

As with most teams in the week before they take the field for season openers, Geneva has high hopes and expectations.

But as long as the Vikings come ready to play, with the heart and energy displayed throughout the offseason, they can live with the results on the field.

SPORTS SHORTS Cougars surging entering stretch run CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Cougars entered Wednesday night’s game at Cedar Rapids with a 37-13 record in the second half of the Midwest League season, five games ahead of their nearest pursuer, Peoria.

After Wednesday, 19 games remain in the regular season, including nine at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Cougars, in their first season as a Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, went 36-32 in the first half and did not secure a playoff berth. A steady effort from the lineup and pitching staff, under the direction of manager Mark Grudzielanek and pitching coach Doug Bochtler, respectively, has helped turn

the club’s fortunes since the All-Star break.

The team’s magic number to clinch a second-half playoff spot was six entering Wednesday.

MWAGA event at Pheasant Run

ST. CHARLES – Pheasant Run Golf Course will host the 15th annual Midwestern Amputee Golf Association scramble and tournament from Sept. 11 to 13.

Jones emerges for defense

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – During a portion of Monday’s Northern Illinois football practice inside the Chessick Center, freshman running back Marcus Jones caught a pass out of the backfield on the right side before he was met by a jarring hit from sophomore linebacker Bobby Jones IV. The hit, which forced the young back to fumble the ball, brought cheers from the defense, but as Jones IV has gotten older, the physical tackles aren’t the best part of the game.

“I get more joy out of the mental reading of the play,” Jones said. “Because I know coming in as a freshman, it was hard to get the mental side of the game down. Now that I have it down, I get joy out of making big plays that way.”

After redshirting his true freshman season in 2013, he played in all 14 games last year – recording 11 tackles and was credited with half of a sack.

Coming into his sophomore season, the other linebackers are taking notice of the strides Jones has made.

“His football IQ has gotten a lot sharper and he’s out there making plays,” senior middle linebacker Boomer Mays said. “I think he’s progressing quite a bit.”

While Jones has mostly run with the first-string defense – alongside Mays and junior outside linebacker Sean Folliard – Northern Illinois linebacker coach Ross Watson shied away from saying Jones will be a starter.

Watson said he wants to get the linebackers different looks in different groups and keep them guessing with rotations during training camp.

“We’ll see, there’s a handful more camp-type practices and there’s a lot of shaking and baking left to do,” said Watson, who is in his first year with the Huskies. “We talked about it and he knows that – all the guys know that and where they stand.”

While Watson doesn’t like to use the term “true out-

side linebacker” to describe Jones, that’s mostly because he doesn’t want to discredit the sophomore’s ability to play in the inside, too.

However, the 6-foot, 219-pound Jones played outside linebacker in high school at Monsignor Pace in Miami Gardens, Florida.

“You want some guys who have good length to them,” Watson said about his ideal outside linebacker. “Offenses now are stretching you out on the edges, so you want a guy who’s physical enough to stop the run and agile enough to be on the pass.”

While the status of linebacker Rasheen Lemon, who was third team All-MAC last season, is still unclear – he’s still indefinitely suspended from an incident that occurred the night of the Huskie Bowl – Northern Illinois is ready to have the next man come up and fill the void if necessary.

“It’s always next man up, no matter where you are,” Jones said. “You have to be ready to go. That’s why they recruited you.”

People with chronic pain may find relief through yoga Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard that yoga can help relieve chronic pain. What types of pain can yoga help?

Dear Reader: People have been practicing yoga for thousands of years. This mind-body exercise combines breath control, meditation and movements to stretch and strengthen muscles. But yoga places as great an emphasis on mental fitness as on physical fitness.

Research finds that yoga may help relieve pain in people with a variety of chronic pain conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches and low back pain.

A study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine looked at 313 patients with chronic low back pain. The researchers found that a weekly yoga class increased mobility more than standard medical care for the condition.

People with carpal tunnel syndrome may also benefit from yoga. In 2003, the Cochrane Collaboration published a review of 21 studies. (This international group of health authorities evaluates randomized clinical trials.) They concluded that yoga significantly reduced pain in people with the syndrome.

Other studies have found that

The evidence is less strong that yoga improves physical fitness or balance, but there is some suggestion that it does. Yoga may improve what are called the “executive function” aspects of thinking. There is strong evidence that yoga reduces stress and anxiety.

Interestingly, yoga appears to calm inflammation in the body and boost the immune system, as measured by the immune response to immunizations for viral diseases. It also appears to modestly lower blood pressure, though not to a greater degree than other forms of exercise.

There are several types of yoga.

The most popular form practiced in the United States is hatha yoga.

It is built around a series of yoga postures, called asanas. Yoga sessions typically last from 45 to 90 minutes. But you can also get some benefit from shorter sessions, done a few times a week.

A session generally begins with breathing exercises that relax the body and help free the mind of

worries and distractions. Breathing deeply through the nose is a vital component of yoga. The session then proceeds through a series of seated, standing and prone asanas. You may be instructed to hold each asana for a few seconds to minutes.

But you should never push your body further than it wishes to go. And you should stop if you feel any pain. Yoga sessions typically end with meditation.

Yoga postures can be modified to accommodate your strength and experience. People with medical conditions that make doing exercises on the floor (traditional for yoga) difficult or impossible can do yoga on a chair, instead. Be sure to tell your instructor about any limiting health problems. He or she can warn you against certain positions that may aggravate your pain and help you modify the poses to prevent injury.

So, there are many reasons for you to try yoga. Some of my patients with chronic pain (and other medical conditions) find that it helps them greatly.

Dr. Wallace: I need your help and fast! I’m 17, and my so-called boyfriend is 18. He and I do practically everything together – go to parties, cruise around and attend rock concerts. He doesn’t have a car, so I always drive when we go out.

He realized that his singleton king was at least as valuable as two low cards – and here the diamond king was much more valuable than the spade king would have been.

Then West, who did not like the sound of the auction, crazily doubled.

South, knowing what he was doing, happily redoubled.

West considered leading the club ace, hoping his partner had a singleton, but decided NorthSouth would have mentioned the suit with a nine-card fit. So West led the spade king.

The declarer ruffed in his hand, played a diamond to dummy’s king, ruffed another spade, drew trumps, and led his club king. West won, but South had the rest.

He claimed 1,930 points, including 100 points for honors.
