PARK PERSPECTIVES NATALIE SEIDEL Once again, we’re back to school! Geneva School District 304 will begin its 2014-15 school year this morning.

Today also marks the first time kindergartners will attend a full day of school.

While many students are excited to reconnect with peers and take on the new and exciting challenges of the upcoming year, making the transition from the lazy, hazy days of summer to a six-hour school day can be tough.

But Geneva residents truly made the most of their summer this year by soaking up the sun at our local parks and facilities.

Last month, we celebrated national Park and Recreation Month by playing outside every day in July.

We danced along the Fox River banks with live music at Island Park, splashed around at the Moore Park Sprayground and discovered wildlife down at the Ralph Dantino Teaching Dock on Peck Lake!

The month-long “out is in” motto helped us achieve record numbers at the

Butterfly House at Peck Farm Park. More than 11,295 visitors walked through its doors in July alone.

While national Park and Recreation Month is officially over and school has just begun, playing outdoors remains vital as ever. Free, unstructured play offers an antidote to the hurried lifestyles, scheduled activities and digital distractions that leave few opportunities for kids to really let loose.

Playing is how we connect. Unstructured play allows children to explore social interactions and learn through experience.

According to Dr. Stuart Brown, psychologist and founding director of the National Institute for Play, children have a lot to learn from playtime, including empathy, communication skills and how to roll with the punches.

Time spent on the playground can be as equally beneficial as time in the classroom. In fact, more and more research suggests healthy playtime leads to healthy adulthood.

Batavia businessman files lawsuit over Prairie State electric project

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia businessman Joe Marconi on Tuesday filed a class-action lawsuit in Kane County Circuit Court over the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus.

“We filed it because the electric rates in this town are so high,” Marconi said Tuesday. “Our main objective is to get Batavia out of the contract they signed with Prairie State.”

Named in the lawsuit are Indiana Municipal Power Agency; IMPA Service Corp., the consulting division of In-

diana Municipal Power Agency hired by the city of Batavia to study the Prairie State Energy Campus project; Raj Rao, president and chief executive officer of IMPA Service Corp. and chairman of the Prairie State Generating Company Management Committee; Chicago-based consulting company Sargent and Lundy LLC, which was hired to study the quality and quantity of the coal at the Prairie State Energy Campus and Skelly and Loy Inc., a Pennsylvania-based consulting firm hired to study the quality and quantity of the coal at the Prairie State Energy Campus.

Marconi is hosting a community meeting about the lawsuit at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. The cities of Batavia, Geneva and Rochelle are named respondents in the suit. In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to purchase electricity from Prairie State. Geneva and Rochelle are other members.

Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said he could

not comment on the suit.

Batavia aldermen in March voted 11-3 to approve an electric rate hike to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues.

The hike raises electric rates in 2014 and 2015 in combination with a half-cent increase to the city’s home-rule sales tax. In addition, the option applies different percentage increases to energy and demand for commercial and industrial customers. City staff had recommended the option.

At that time, Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen the option would provide sufficient

revenues and maintain comparable electric rates with surrounding utilities. Under the option, residents this year will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates, plus a $4-a-month increase to the customer charge. In 2015, residents also will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates. Holm had said Batavia needed to increase electric rates for many reasons, including higher-than-anticipated construction costs related to the Prairie State project, the economic downturn and an associated unprecedented drop in the price of natural gas, to which wholesale electric prices closely follow.

Fox Valley Wildlife Center volunteers take care of injured and orphaned animals

“These guys’ heads are so small,” said Tate, an 18-yearold Sugar Grove resident.

“They just get a few squirts to keep them hydrated.”

It’s all in a day’s work in her duties as a volunteer at the Fox Valley Wildlife Center near Elburn. Those at the center take care of injured and orphaned animals.

Volunteering is a family affair for the Tate family. Her 13-year-old brother, Zachary Tate, and their mother, Donna Tate, also volunteer at the center. On this particular day, Amanda Tate was working in the bird room at the Fox Valley Wildlife Center.

Since some of the birds are orphaned, she has to perform a few of the duties their mother normally would do, such as feeding them.

A few minutes later, she responds to the timers going off, indicating the birds need to be fed.

“We try to maintain the same times as the mom would feed their babies,” Amanda Tate said. She is currently an intern for the Fox Valley Wildlife Center, a job that has her working with many different animals, from birds to raccoons to coyotes.

“I’ve always loved animals,” Amanda Tate said. “I love the complexity of all the different animals.”

cages. They have watched the raccoons grow since they started out on formula, Donna Tate said.

the center since May 2013. She also is an intern at the center and will bring some of the animals from the Fox Valley Wildlife Center to schools and daycare centers to explain what goes on at the center.

“I do education programs about what we do here,” she said. “My son, this is what he wants to do as a career. I home-school our kids, and you can’t beat this kind of training.”

After feeding the raccoons,

About 11 p.m. Friday, a St. Charles police officer traveling on Route 31 near Crane Road saw Johansen pass two vehicles in a no-passing zone and clocked him going 80 mph in a 45-mph zone, Deputy Chief Dave Kintz said.

When the officer turned around to follow Johansen, Kintz said, the motorist turned onto Abbeywood Drive to avoid police.

reportedly responded to the scene in attempt to locate Johansen and found him on Greenwood Lane near Windsor Circle.

Johansen was clocked going 77 mph on Greenwood Lane, a 25-mph zone, Kintz said. After turning on Windsor Circle, Johansen reportedly lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree. He told officers he was not injured, Kintz said.

scribed Johansen as having glossy and bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He also smelled of alcohol and needed assistance walking to an officer’s squad car, according to the document.

Court documents indicate his bail was set at $20,000.

Online records for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday showed he was no longer in custody.

Johansen is expected in court at 9 a.m. Aug. 28 for a preliminary hearing.

POLICE REPORTS Elburn • Juan M. Capuchino, 24, of the 100 block of Fairwood Court, Elgin, was arrested Friday, Aug. 8, on a Kane County warrant for failure to appear in court on charges of non-parental false imprisonment of a minor. Elburn police also cited Capuchino for speeding, driving without insurance and driving with a suspended license.

• Michelle Lynne Wagenknecht, 41, of the 900 block of Liberty Drive, Elburn, was arrested Friday, Aug. 8, on an Elburn warrant for failure to appear in court on a speeding charge.

• Jesse Paul Gallois, 24, of the 0N500 block of East Weaver Circle, Blackberry Township, was charged Sunday, Aug. 17, with driving under the influence, having a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent and speeding more than 25 but

less than 35 miles an hour over the speed limit. According to reports, Gallois was driving 89 miles an hour in a 55-mph zone at 4:41 a.m. on Route 38 east of Anderson Road and his blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.168 percent.

• An 87-year-old man who lives in the 300 block of Willow Street reported an attempt to defraud him on Wednesday, July 23. According to reports, he answered the phone, and a man claiming to be his grandson said he had an accident and needed $2,500. The resident questioned the caller’s identity, to which the caller stated an expletive and hung up. The Elburn resident told police he provided no personal information nor money to the caller.

Elgin, was charged Thursday, Aug. 14, with possession of marijuana.

• Brandon Moffat, 23, of the 1000 block of McClurg Drive, Batavia, was charged Sunday, Aug. 17, with fighting.

• Collin M. Moore, 39, of the 1500 block of South Tyler Road, St. Charles, was charged Saturday, Aug. 16, with public drunkenness.

• Michael D. Abernathy, 21, of the 500 block of Deerpath Road, Batavia, was charged Sunday, Aug. 10, with criminal trespass to real property.

• Michael P. Hayes, 26, of the 0-100 block of North 12th Street, St. Charles, was charged Saturday, Aug. 16, with obstructing/resisting police. He was also arrested on a warrant.

GENEVA – Grant Wegner, the Kane County interim ethics adviser, recused himself from reviewing an ethics complaint filed this week against Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and independent contractor Rick Nagel, citing an appearance of impropriety.

In an email to Ellen Nottke, who filed the complaint, and to Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Lulves, Wegner recused himself and asked that an independent person qualified to act as ethics adviser review the documentation submitted.

Wegner cited a section of the ethics ordinance indicating the chairman appoints the ethics adviser and reviews the statements submitted by the adviser.

“As a result, I believe there would be an appearance of an impropriety if I were to review Ellen’s complaint, since it is directed at the County Board chairman,” Wegner’s email states, citing another section of the ethics ordinance.

“We have received the referral which is under review.

We will advise when that review is completed,” Lulves stated in an email response to Wegner and Nottke.

As to whether an outside attorney or special prosecutor would be retained to review the complaint, Lulves said, “It’s under review, and no decision has been made about anything.”

Nagel, of Geneva, was hired in March to spearhead the Kane County Connects initiative, which is intended to engage residents with county government and provide them with information. His six-month $30,000 contract is supported by riverboat casino funds.

Nottke, a Batavia Township resident, alleged that when Nagel posted a link to Lauzen’s annual Porky Picnic political fundraiser in Kane County Connects’ daily calendar of events, both violated the county’s ethics ordinance as a prohibited political activity.

According to the ethics or-

dinance, prohibited political activity is described as “soliciting contributions, including but not limited to the purchase of, selling, distributing or receiving payment for tickets for any political fundraiser, political meeting or other political event.”

The ethics ordinance forbids county officers or employees from intentionally using county resources or property in connection with prohibited political activity. It also forbids officers or employees from performing prohibited political activity while being paid by the county, or to be required to do so as a condition of employment.

Nagel said he did not know the Porky Picnic was a politician fundraiser and made a mistake when he included it in the calendar listing of events in the county’s newsletter. Lauzen said he did not ask Nagel to post the notice of his fundraiser in Kane County Connects and leaves the newsletter’s contents up to Nagel as an experienced editor.

Both said that, going forward, it would not happen again.

Nagel’s background is as an editor at the Aurora-Beacon News, which is owned by the Sun-Times Media.

Nottke was chairwoman of the Batavia Township Republicans four years ago, and also volunteered for the Kane County Republicans, she said.

“I understand and appreciate [retired] Judge Wegner’s concerns about this issue,” Nottke wrote in an email.

“It shows me that he is taking his responsibilities seriously. I trust that the State’s Attorney’s Office will follow through, so that there will be a thorough and fair investigation of this matter, and [I] look forward to the next step in this process.”

The State’s Attorney’s Office is looking into similar ethics complaints about Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham and former deputy clerk Jeff Ward of Geneva for using the county’s computers, servers and email for campaign and political purposes.

“It’s still under review,” Lulves said. “Everything is under review.”

Alderman is moving to North Aurora

OBITUARIES MARY CELESTIA KERR Born: Oct. 20, 1937; in Miami, FL Died: Aug. 16, 2014; in Geneva, IL Mary Neder Kerr passed away Saturday, August 16, 2014, at Delnor Community Hospital.

She was born October 20, 1937, in Miami Florida. Her parents and her two brothers Ellis and Norman moved to Jacksonville, FL, where Mary attended grade school, high school, and nursing school This is where she eventually met her future husband John “Jack” Kerr, Sr. Mary and Jack were married on April 10, 1960. In 1963 Mary and Jack relocated to St. Petersburg, FL, where they lived until 1980, when Jack was transferred to Atlanta Georgia.

Mary became a registered nurse, an occupation that she loved and devoted 50 years of her life. Mary and Jack moved to St. Charles, IL in 1985. They became active members of Saint Charles Episcopal Church shortly after moving to the area.

Mary was very involved in the church and had been on alter guild, was a chalice bearer, a lay reader, and was a daughter of the King.

Mary was preceded in death by Jack, her husband of 52 years in July 2012. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Ruth Neder; her brother, Norman Neder.

Mary is survived by her brother, Ellis Neder; son, John Kerr, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Kristen Kerr; daughter, Jennifer Kerr Robinson; two grandsons, Joshua Kerr and Jacob Kerr; honorary granddaughter, Emily Thompson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at Saint Charles Episcopal Church, 994 N. 5th Avenue, St. Charles, 60174 with Rev. Bill Nesbit officiating. The family will receive visitors prior to the service from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the church.

Claudia was born on March 19, 1925, in Black Oak, Arkansas. After high school her free spirit brought her to Chicago to start a life of her own. Claudia met and married the man of her dreams, Clarence Larson in 1951. They started a family of their own, eventually settling in St. Charles.

Claudia is gone from this Earth, but will never be forgotten.

Claudia is survived by her 5 children, Nancy Faber, David (Tara), Wayne, Robert (LeaAnn), Edward (Julie) Larson; 9 grandchildren, Josh (Debbie) Faber, Becky (fiancée Chris Fack) Faber, Kimberly Larson-Osborn, Daniel, Anthony, Sean, Eric, Ivan Larson, Emily (Robert) Hansen; and 4 great grandchildren.

Claudia is preceded in death by her husband of over 38 years, Clarence; and her mother Gladys.

Visitation to celebrate her life will be held at Conley Funeral Home, 116 w.

Carole A. Michels, age 73, of rural Elburn, passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 16, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving husband and children and her dear sister Judy.

She has been at her home and/ or lake home under family, Hospice and Home Helpers care since April 11, 2014. Carole was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2004 and has been resigned to her condition with an enduring faith in God that was one of her characteristics throughout her life. Carole gave unconditional love and effort to everyone that she met and to everything that she did.

Carole was born June 29, 1941, at Aurora, IL, the daughter of Roy and Gertrude (Kroeger) Brown, She grew up in Aurora the “middle” child of four children. Carole attended East Aurora Public Schools, namely Oak Park Elementary School, East Aurora Junior High School, and graduated mid-term in the first graduating class from the “new” East Aurora High School in 1959. In high school she developed lifelong friendships with several special friends. Upon graduation from high school, Carole began her career as a secretary with IBM in Aurora and developed the skills that served her well throughout her life.

She was with her friends when she met her future husband Jim at the A&W Root Beer Stand at Aurora and started a romance that lasted almost 55 years. They dated while Jim attended Marquette University and were engaged on June 24, 1962, on Powers Lake, WI and they were married on December 1, 1962, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Aurora. After a brief honey moon, they returned to Oklahoma City where Jim was stationed as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) in the Division of Indian Health. It was while in Oklahoma City that their oldest child, Patrick “Sean” was born in October 1963.

Soon afterward they were transferred

to Henryetta, OK where Christopher “Todd” was born in January 1965.

Due to the reorganization of the USPHS, they moved to New Brighton, MN where they were blessed with their daughter “Denise” Marie who was born in August 1966. The family of five made another move to Norman, OK in 1968, where Jim attended the University of Oklahoma and Carole made many friends with her outgoing personality, entertainment and cooking skills. Finally, in 1969 they returned “home” to reside at their present home in Blackberry Twp. and joined their extensive families and made a large number of new friends.

Carole enjoyed her new home and rejoining her family. She became active in St. Gall Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister among many other things. Carole concentrated on raising her three children and, along with her sisters, looking after her mother and dad and her widowed mother in law.

She resumed her secretarial skills as the secretary of the newly formed consulting engineering firm Engineering Enterprises, Inc. at Elburn in 1974.

Carole then became active in the Elburn Business Council and in 1982, she became a realtor with Leuer Realty where she was a “top producer” for most of her 30 year career.

Carole was a member and president of the Greater Aurora Association of Realtors and a member of the Fox Valley Board of Realtors; she held several leadership positions with both boards. She was also a charter member of the Kane County Tourism Association and a member of the Kaneland Foundation and the Waubonsee Community College Foundation. Carole was a precinct committee person for Blackberry Twp., Kane Co. for many years. She was one of the seven founders of Kaneland Community Bank, now American Bank and Trust, Elburn. Carole was also the Corporate Secretary Emeritus of Engineering Enterprises, Inc., Sugar Grove, IL. Carole enjoyed life, especially entertaining family and friends by cooking and baking, she also enjoyed traveling with her family and friends, and vacationing at Powers Lake, WI. A loving

wife and totally devoted mother and grandmother, her greatest joy was to care for her family. Her love was mirrored in the lives of her children and grandchildren who adored her.

She is survived by her husband Jim; two sons, Sean (Valerie) Michels of Sugar Grove, Todd(Jacqui) Michels of Chicago; and one daughter, Denise (Brian) Migliorini of Plano; three sisters, Jean (Don) White of Big Rock, Joan McCue of Aurora and Judy (Jim)Kreitz of Sugar Grove; and nine grandchildren: Abby, Nick, Maddy and Sophie Michels of Sugar Grove, Greycn, Alexa and Samantha Michels of Chicago, and Gina and Nico Migliorini of Plano; three sisters in law, Pat, Lil and Lois Michels and Anna Marie Avram and her brother in law Nello Avram; and 44 nieces and nephews.

She joins now her parents, and two grandsons, Geno and Ryan Migliorini.

Also, her mother and father in law Marie and Ben Michels; her brothers in law, Bob, Art and Bern Michels, and Jim McCue Sr.; and five nieces and nephews.

Her visitation will be held at St. Gall Catholic Church, IL Rte. 47 and Shannon St., Elburn on Thursday, August 21, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a wake service to begin at 8 p.m., where family and friends are invited to view her remains in the church and to “Celebrate Carole’s Life” in the church hall.

Aurora man charged with drinking at Batavia school BATAVIA – Stephen A. Wake, 65, of the 2900 block of Arbor Lane, Aurora, has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol following an incident Monday afternoon at H.C. Storm Elementary School.

According to a Batavia Police Department news release, officers were first called to the school at 304 N. Van Nortwick Ave. at 3:31 p.m. for a report of an individual, later identified as Wake, drinking a bottle of wine at the soccer field at H.C. Storm.

The incident happened as school was being dismissed for the day. Monday was the first day of classes for Batavia students.

Police cited Wake for having open liquor in a public place. He told police a friend had dropped him off and that he was watching soccer practice.

At 4:11 p.m., police officers again were called to the school after Wake drove his 2012 Chevrolet Equinox onto the playground located on the school’s south side, according to the release. He failed standardized field sobriety tests and was arrested, police said.

According to the release, his blood-alcohol level was above the state’s legal limit of 0.08.

He was released from custody after posting bail and a court hearing is set for Sept. 17.

A Kane County Health Department program is training police officers to administer Narcan, a trade name for Naloxone. It is a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

Barb Jeffers, health department executive director, told a County Board committee Tuesday that the program conducted a training session in late July.

About 30 people from several police departments throughout the county, including Sugar Grove and North Aurora, participated, Jeffers said.

Because those trained are expected to train their workforce within four weeks, Jeffers said she expects police to start carrying doses of Narcan

in September.

Each officer is allowed to carry two doses of the nasal spray at a time, she said.

The Narcan use will be tracked, Jeffers said. Before receiving replacement doses, she said, officers must submit paperwork to the health department, who then will send it to the state.

The health department is providing the medication, Jeffers said, noting two doses cost $35. The medication has a shelf life of two years, she

said.

Jeffers said she has fielded calls from other counties – including LaSalle, Grundy and DeKalb – about the program.

“It is, I think, catching on, at least in our region,” she said.

Although emergency medical technicians already administer Narcan, Jeffers said the new program targets police because they typically arrive on the scene quicker.

Medics, however, still will be called, she said.

In 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Loane Freedlund, who was a long time Bethany member, and together, they raised three children, Scott, Tom, and Linda Tharrington Osteraa. Jim taught school a couple of years and then joined Houghton Mifflin Company where he stayed for 27 plus years.

He retired in 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Loane;

son, Scott; his wife, Karen; and two grandsons, Benjamin and Jack; daughter, Linda Osteraa, and her husband, Michael, and their daughters Britt, Tori, and Haley; and a son, Thomas; and two sisters, Elaine Martin and Joyce Stran.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Grace Tharrington.

On August 16, 2014, Jim Tharrington died in Rockford, Illinois, at the age of 78 years, 10 months, and 13 days.

A memorial service was held at

Bethany Lutheran Church.

New volunteers should report at 8 a.m. Aug. 30 to the corner of South Third and James streets, in front of the Geneva Post Office, to be assigned a garden location.

Volunteers already assigned to a garden can report directly to their garden and begin planting flowers that have been delivered to their area.

Volunteers are asked to bring garden gloves, pruning shears, rakes, brooms, shovels and trowels. Planting will continue unless there is a thun-

Bumblers with badges THE WASHINGTON POST If there were any doubt that the citizens of Ferguson, Missouri, had good reason to question the professionalism of their police force, it has been erased by several days of revelations about the shooting of teenager Michael Brown.

The facts we now have include these: Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson killed the 18-year-old Brown when he was unarmed and more than 30 feet from the police car in which an initial confrontation between the two apparently occurred. On Monday, the public got some bits of new information, including autopsy reports indicating that Brown was shot from the front and that the teenager had marijuana in his system.

A secondhand account of Officer Wilson’s side of the story also emerged. But these bottom-line points stand: Police officers have a responsibility to use non-deadly means to defuse situations whenever possible, and nothing on the record indicates that Brown had to die.

Meanwhile, the Ferguson Police Department continues to fumble the vital job of providing information to the public about the shooting. When local officials have produced information, its release has often been self-servingly selective. Authorities waited days even to identify Officer Wilson. Crucial details of the shooting remain murky – including the officer’s full, on-the-record account of the story – yet Ferguson police released extensive documentation of a convenience store robbery in which Brown was allegedly involved. If the intent of the police is to avoid prejudicing eyewitness accounts still being collected, this is an awful way of doing so. Instead, this looks like contempt for the public’s right to know, incompetence or both.

There was a moment at which tensions seemed to be cooling. After days of clashes between protesters and police toting military-style weapons, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon relieved the St. Louis County Police Department of the job of securing Ferguson. The Missouri Highway Patrol commander the governor tapped to step in made a concerted effort to engage with the community. Nighttime unrest briefly abated. Then the robbery information and the contradictory explanations for its release helped bring the situation back to a boil.

Police misbehavior is no excuse for violence and looting. But in such a powder-keg situation, a key role for the government is to calm rather than to inflame.

The Ferguson police failed that basic test.

It is good that federal authorities are conducting a thorough parallel investigation and that President Obama will dispatch Attorney General Eric Holder to Ferguson this week. Federal officials should conduct their probe as quickly as possible and release as much information as they can, as soon as they can. Not only would that show more respect for the people of Ferguson than their own police have; it would apply pressure to local authorities to conduct themselves more responsibly.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DISTRACTION NEEDS TO END To the Editor: I have followed, for several months now, this ongoing battle between Chairman Chris Lauzen and Coroner Rob Russell. I’m concerned that I don’t see a lot of push back from any of the board members regarding this. In my opinion, the chairman and the coroner were elected by the same group of people. Russell has done more to bring the coroner’s office into the 21st century than either of his predecessors (Chuck West or Mary Lou Kearns) in the mere two years that he has served.

The fact that Lauzen has made headlines of an approximately $1,200 investment in trinkets made by the coroner’s office for National Night Out with total disregard for how much the sheriff or

state’s attorney might have spent for the same event is ludicrous, and that not one board member dared to confront the chairman on this is really disappointing.

On the other hand, the chairman wants to spend up to $20,000 and countless hours of staff time in what essentially is an exercise in second guessing that will provide no useful information or practical results.

The chairman’s apparent unhealthy obsession with the coroner’s budget, to the exclusion

of other elected officials, whose budgets make up the overwhelming percentage of public safety expenditures, suggests a lack of proportionality on his part.

The time and effort (and staff time) devoted to the chairman’s feud with the coroner should be making everybody uncomfortable and is a distraction from the important issues facing the county and needs to end.

Kaneville Fest begins Thursday Movie night, bike parade among events

The 2014 Kaneville Fest is set to begin Thursday and is packed with such activities as a free movie night, a car show, a kids bike parade, eating contests, live musical entertainment, raffles and a fireworks show.

“Everything’s falling into place,” Kaneville Village President Pat Hill said Monday on the heels of participating in last weekend’s Elburn Days.

Many festival events will take place near the Kaneville community building at 2S101 Harter Road. The nearby Hill’s Country Store – which Hill owns and is also known as the Purple Store – will host some events as well, including a cookout from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Friday and Saturday.

Between helping customers at her shop Monday morning, Hill said many aspects of Kaneville Fest will be the same as in previous years, but there will be some changes.

If you go Kaneville Fest runs Thursday through Sunday.

Many of the events take place near the Kaneville community building, which is at 2S101 Harter Road, Kaneville. Some events are at Hill’s Country Store, also known as the Purple Store, which is near the community building.

Here’s a look at some of the activities planned: • Community garage sales, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

• Free movie night featuring “Zookeeper,” 8 p.m. Friday.

• Car show, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

• Kids bike parade, 10 a.m. Saturday.

• Ice cream eating contest, 3 p.m. Saturday.

• Watermelon eating contest, 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

• Horse-drawn wagon rides, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

• Fireworks show, Saturday at dusk.

There won’t be a craft show, she said, but the festival is bringing back the car show.

The show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and includes a $10 entry fee per car, Hill said.

She said the proceeds will not only help pay for some aspects of the festival but will also benefit the Wounded Warriors Project.

Hill expects at least 50 to 75 cars.

“It all depends on the weather,” she said.

A watermelon eating contest also has been added to Saturday’s lineup of activities, Hill said. It will follow the ice cream eating contest, which is set for 3 p.m. She said the contests are for both kids and adults.

“They think it’s something

fun to do,” Hill said.

The band Red Woody is set to provide Saturday night entertainment. Hill said she recently got confirmation that Nude Buddha will serve as the opening act at 5 p.m.

Kaneville Fest activities are free with the exception of the car show entry fee and the dinner provided by 5-B’s Catering Service. Set for 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, the meal is $12 for adults and $5 for the children’s hot dog meal.

Tickets also are available for such raffle prizes as gift baskets and the 50/50 raffle. The cost is six for $5 or $1 each, Hill said.

Rogers’ go-ahead double in 8th proves decisive

The Cougars won their ninth straight game Tuesday despite being outhit, 13-4, by the Burlington Bees as Kane County rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 4-3 victory at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Cougars (37-20 second half, 82-45 overall) trailed 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when third baseman Jeimer Candelario walked, followed by a Yasiel Balaguert single.

Burlington relief pitcher Alan Busenitz then threw a ball to the backstop to advance both runners, and with two strikes, first baseman Jacob Rogers launched a double to left-center to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs.

“With two strikes I was kind of just looking for a ball up.” Rogers said. “I feel like our whole team is a bunch of [scrappers], everybody can get it done.”

The Bees (26-31, 64-62) struck first in the first frame on a RBI single by Eric Aguilera. Cougars starter Paul Blackburn (9-4) allowed a runner to reach base in all five innings of work. He scattered eight hits over those innings and allowed only one earned run.

Zak Hermans got the win, giving up four hits and one run in three innings. Francisco Carrillo (save) entered the game in the ninth inning to close down the win.

Kane County got on the board in the fourth when designated hitter Mark Zagunis walked with the bases loaded to tie the score at 1.

Going back to school means heading back indoors for St. Charles North senior Emily Carroll.

Both will require major adjustments for the North girls volleyball middle hitter, whose volleyball passion – and future – is shifting to sand.

Last month, Carroll accepted a scholarship offer to play sand volleyball at Stetson University in Florida, one of about 40 U.S. schools that offer the sport.

Carroll said a friend introduced her to the sport three years ago and it “sounded like a fun thing to do in summer.”

She took an immediate liking to the sport, and soon was traveling to an indoor sand volleyball facility in Hobart, Indiana to continue her training when it was too chilly to play locally. Sandy volleyball matches are played 2-on-2, and with sand volleyball players scarce in the midwest, she partnered primarily with Indiana resident Bella Kuechenberg for practice and tournament play.

Carroll said she appreciated the laid-back culture of the sport – taking a dip in the water between matches is quite the stress-reliever – and said she’s received plenty of encouragement about her nontraditional path.

“Everyone thinks it’s awesome,” Carroll said. “I’ve gotten some of my [North] teammates to play sand and beach tournaments, and they all love it and think it’s a really cool sport. I’ve taken something that usually is viewed as just something fun to do and taken it as a serious sport. I’ve gotten nothing but support from my friends and family.”

“I think a lot of it is with conditioning because running around in sand is a lot harder than running around on a normal floor and also a lot harder to jump, so you have to focus a lot more on conserving energy between plays … and with beach, it’s a lot of placing the ball, too,” Carroll said. “If you place the ball, there are only two people on the court, so it’s a little easier to find open court.”

There are several rule differences between indoor

and sand play, including a block counting as one of the three allowed touches in sand volleyball.

Having decided that she wanted to stick with outdoor volleyball long-term, last winter Carroll stepped away from her indoor club program, Team One in Aurora.

“The only thing that really made it hard was leaving my team because I really liked playing on a bigger team, but the more I started to like sand, the less indoor started to appeal to me because I’m a middle, and in sand you get to

touch the ball every play and do all the kills, but for middle for indoor, you kind of just block, so I did start to not enjoy indoor as much,” Carroll said.

That said, Carroll expressed enthusiasm about her final goaround as a North Star – even if it means having to re-acclimate to playing in shoes. North coach Lindsey Hawkins said Carroll made a late decision to stick with high school volleyball this fall, saying she is “super glad” Carroll opted to return.

North’s season begins Tuesday against York, and the

6-foot Carroll figures to be part of a highly imposing North front line that also will include potent outside hitters Daley Krage and Claire Anderson.

“I am looking forward to the season,” Carroll said. “It’s great to be a senior, get all the perks, and I really like my team. It’s going to take awhile to adjust to being back indoors, but I am looking forward to it.”

Loberg ends it early, chooses Wisconsin

Loberg, one of the state’s elite underclassmen, still has three years of high school ahead of her but already has her college volleyball plans in place after committing Tuesday to Wisconsin.

A summer full of visits kept Loberg bustling but her heart was virtually set on Madison after attending a camp at Wisconsin last month.

“I’ve known it for a little while but it just took me a while to complete the decision,” Loberg said.

Loberg, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter, rapidly became a coveted prospect through her club play with Fusion South and a dynamite freshman season at Geneva, where she helped power the Vikings to their first sectional championship in program history.

Loberg scoped out Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois, Florida and Missouri. Her Michigan State visit was alongside the Wicinski clan; former Geneva standout Lauren Wicinski starred for the Spartans’ volleyball program while Geneva senior Kelsey Wicinski is one of Loberg’s teammates with the Vikings.

Loberg phoned Wisconsin coach Kelly Sheffield to notify him of her commitment Tuesday but only after making a few calls she was dreading.

“It had been kind of a hard day because it was hard to talk to the [other coaches], which wasn’t very easy or fun, but when I got to call [Sheffield], I was super excited because he was super happy and supportive,” Loberg said.

Loberg was the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Female Athlete of the Year for the 2013-14 school year after being selected to the Chronicle’s First Team All-Area teams in both volleyball and basketball.

In volleyball, she had 312 kills and 179 digs.

In addition to her rapport with Wisconsin’s coaching staff, Loberg said the program’s volleyball facilities and fan support helped set the Badgers apart. Although her college choice comes early in her high school years, Loberg said she did not want other coaches to continue devoting time to recruiting her given her strong feelings for Wisconsin, which were shared by her family.

Loberg also singled out Fusion recruiting coordinator Jim Mohr for helping her sift through the intense process.

Another highly regarded Upstate Eight Conference product, West Aurora’s Lauren Carlini, is a sophomore in the Badgers’ program.

Loberg’s sophomore season at Geneva is set to begin Tuesday as the Vikings visit Rosary.

Balanced Vikings take home quad

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva boys golfers made coach Eric Hatczel’s job of totaling scores easy Tuesday for the Geneva Quad at Mill Creek Golf Course.

Three golfers shot 77s and a fourth came in with a 78 as the Vikings won their first home match of the year with a score of 309.

South Elgin came in second at 324.

Kaneland, which played with a split squad, took third with a score of 364.

Glenbard South, the fourth school slated to compete in the tournament, had a scheduling conflict and was unable to play.

Seniors Matt Fisher and Spencer Sharpe and junior Alex Lenski all completed the 18-hole course with 6-overpar 77s. Sophomore Andrew Abel finished with a 78.

pretty well. You know this is our first home contest, which is a wonderful thing to get the introduction quick and easy at home,” Hatczel said. “I know we had a couple [of players] who didn’t think their rounds were up to where their standard is at.

But even in the bottom order we had some guys shooting some pretty decent scores to help round out that team score and performed well, so it was a good day.”

“Not my best [score], but it was a good day out there,” Fisher said. “I hit the ball on the fairway a lot. I was pretty good with my short game, for the most part, and I didn’t have too many three putts. It was a little bit of a factor but not a big deal.”

South Elgin coach Gordon Brown considered it a round worth building on.

“It’s not our home course so you have to give them credit for doing what they had to do on their home turf,”

Some of Kaneland’s team competed elsewhere, upping the Knights’ degree of difficulty.

“Six went to [The Panther Invite at] Glendale [Lakes] and seven are here today,” Kaneland assistant coach Ken Neahring said. “This course is kind of tough – the greens and stuff like that and it’s kind of tight in a few spots. I thought we had some good scores. We had quite a few sophomores playing.”

Low scorer for Kaneland was sophomore Jeff Van Gemert, who shot an 85.

“That was the best score on the varsity squad,” Neahring said. “The others were a little higher than they normally would be.”

South Elgin senior Ethan Hildenbrandt had a 74 for the Storm’s best score.

“Technically, he got the medal, but there was no medal today,” Brown said.

Who would’ve thought J’Marcus Webb would ever long to be a Bear again?

My fear for Cutler has always been that his attitude and the way he’s carried himself, which prior to this year was petulant, angry, dismissive and disgusted with everyone around him a good chunk of time, would be his undoing at a position where, if he couldn’t lead, he would never succeed.

The most important single ingredient for the Bears to succeed this year is a new and better Cutler.

So I asked the man himself today.

“Jay, are you more at ease this year with yourself, your teammates and the media, and if so why?”

“It might be true,” Cutler responded. “Anytime you are in an offense and have the same group of guys around you, it’s going to be more comfortable. It is for me, anyway. I like the group of guys we have in the locker room, understand what we’re doing offensively. And it’s early. It’s still preseason with you guys.”

A year ago, I would have taken that last line as a legitimate warning. But, based on the big smile and chuckle he offered along with it, I’m pretty sure the new Jay was actually just having fun.

Nothing makes me crazier than an analyst who believes he’s made a discovery but refuses to put his name on it for fear of being proven wrong.

Hey, nobody’s perfect, so I’m done tiptoeing around.

Through an entire offseason of OTAs, veteran minicamp and three full weeks in Bourbonnais, it appears to me Jay Cutler is a changed man.

In spite of his own warning to me today – I’ll get to it in a moment – that my pronouncement may be premature, I’m convinced we’re dealing with a new and better model of Cutler.

While it is one of the telltale signs, I’m not talking just about his relationship with the media.

“We’ve absolutely noticed,” offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said. “I think everyone in the building has noticed a difference in Jay. “None of us knew Jay very well before getting here last year and we worked through the year and that first year is always hard on everybody.

But we see, and what I see in Jay Cutler right now is a guy that’s leading the group. A guy that is approachable and is working to make everybody better because he realizes that it’s important that everybody is on the same page with him.

“He’s talked with receivers, he’s talked with linemen, he’s working with the running backs constantly and that’s a maturity on his part of knowing the offense, knowing what we want as coaches, and feeling good about being the leader that he is. It’s been a very good start of the year that way.”

If the old Cutler, whose most memorable moments as a Bear have included shoving teammates on the field and cussing out his coaches on national TV, isn’t gone forever, he is certainly deep in hiding.

This new Jay has even made himself the official Bears welcoming party for wayward souls arriving on Halas Hall’s doorstep.

Waving a red flag in the Ivy League

LOUIS – In his introduction to “Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life,” former Yale professor William Deresiewicz describes today’s Ivy League as a highly competent zombie factory, one that “manufactures students who are smart and talented and driven, yes, but also anxious, timid and lost, with little intellectual curiosity and stunted sense of purpose: trapped in a bubble of privilege, heading meekly in the same direction, great at what they’re doing but with no idea why they’re doing it.” He then explains how the alleged best higher-education system in the world got this way — and what can be done to foster a top-tier college environment at once more diverse and less miserable.

From the racket of the U.S. News rankings to the overextended misdeeds of poseur-scholar James Franco, from the history of the “legacy” system (originally put in place to keep out Jewish students), to the overuse of adjuncts, there is little in the contemporary higher-ed landscape — in which he spent two and a half decades as both student and professor — that Deresiewicz leaves unquestioned.

In a recent email conversation, we discussed at least a fraction of what “Excellent Sheep” covers. Excerpts:

Q: Your tour for this book is almost exclusively to the very institutions you lambaste for their corporatized fostering of elitist mediocrity. Any awkward moments?

A: I’m speaking at those schools because that is the audience that most needs to hear my message. To the credit of the individuals or groups who have invited me, at least some people on elite campuses recognize as much. I’ve actually been

In fact, those conversations were instrumental in helping me develop the book – in giving me a sense not only of what’s going on with high-achieving students now, but of what they need and want to hear. So I’m not worried about awkward moments. I welcome whatever questions or responses students (and professors, and administrators) may have. Besides, I’ve found that today’s students are unfailingly polite — almost to a fault, I would say.

This is a very rare opportunity in human history, and the only thing that can screw it up for you is if you allow yourself to buy into the kind of standards that the system works so hard to instill, that desperate need for the constant affirmation of credentials and gold stars, whether in the form of A’s or of ultra-high salaries and prestigious titles.

Q: In your early chapters, you present a heartbreaking paradox of students who are overworked and miserable. Will you tell me a little bit more about what you refer to as “the opportunities [elite education] closes down”?

A: I mean the opportunity

Q: I’m sure you’re aware of the unintended consequences of talk of “doing what you love” and “vocation,” which is the monetary devaluation of artistic or creative work. Is there a Golden Mean between the soul-sucking $150K consulting job and the rhetoric of “vocation”?

A: Yes, I’m quite aware

not to be rich — or high-status — and still live a good life. In other words, if you’re a smart, talented, energetic young person in America today (especially if you grow up upper-middle-class or

of the way the rhetoric of love and vocation has been co-opted by people who don’t want to pay their workers (intellectual, creative, or otherwise) what they deserve. But that doesn’t mean

that love and vocation aren’t real things. People should strive to do work that’s meaningful to them, and they should also insist (to the extent they can, which is a lot greater if people act collectively) that they get paid a fair wage for that work. “Love” should matter to you; as far as your boss is concerned, it’s none of their business.

I should also add something very important: I am not telling students to go into any particular kind of work – the arts, academia, service work, whatever.

Being a lawyer can certainly be a very meaningful occupation. Purpose and pay are separate issues. The point is not what you do but why you do it, how you choose it.

Q: How do the younger kids you talk to react to your warnings about elite education?

A: I’ve gotten a fair number of emails from high school students, most of which say, essentially: thank you. Thank you for giving me a perspective that my crazy peers/teachers/ parents don’t have. Though I should say that someone also told me, about the recent article, that the most offended readers are Ivy-bound 18-year-olds. To which I say, it’s never too early to start shaking them up.

Q: Any final thoughts about the initial reactions to the book?

A: One of the arguments I’ve seen, in published responses to my article, is that I exaggerate the depth of psychological distress among high-achieving students today. Kids are fine, people say; college students have always been unhappy. Well, they’re not fine, and they haven’t always been unhappy – not like this. We’re putting kids under the kind of pressure that no young person should have to face, and a lot of them are cracking, even if we can’t see it. We need to start to see it.

Retrograde ejaculation in men could cause infertility Dear Doctor K: For the past few months, I haven’t been ejaculating, even when I have an orgasm.

Why not? What’s wrong?

Dear Reader: It sounds like retrograde ejaculation. There is one tube, the urethra, which leads from the bladder and through the center of the penis. The urethra carries urine out of the body.

Two tubes, one on each side of the urethra, lead from the seminal vesicles and open into the urethra. The seminal vesicles are tiny glands that make semen.

(The prostate gland helps make semen, too.) Semen is a thick fluid that helps nourish sperm. Without healthy sperm, the human species cannot last. Sperm is made in the testicles and passes up to the opening of the seminal vesicles in still another pair of tubes. There, sperm mixes with the semen.

Here’s what is supposed to happen when a man ejaculates: The mixture of semen and sperm is thrust forward through a man’s urethra and out the tip of his penis. However, the urethra is an open tube. While one part of the

To make sure that the semen and sperm move forward, and not backward, a tiny circular muscle at the bladder entrance shuts the opening to the bladder during ejaculation. This prevents semen from entering, and creates more pressure pushing semen and sperm out through the penis.

In retrograde ejaculation, the tiny circular muscle does not function normally. As a result, all or part of the semen travels backward into the bladder. And less – or no – semen comes out of the penis. (I’ve put illustrations showing normal and retrograde ejaculation on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Retrograde ejaculation does not interfere with a man’s ability to have an erection or to achieve

orgasm. But it can cause infertility because sperm cannot reach the woman’s uterus.

Retrograde ejaculation has several possible causes. Damage that occurs during prostate, lower back, pelvic or bladder surgery may cause the condition. So might nerve damage that can result from multiple sclerosis or diabetes. The condition is also a possible side effect of certain medications taken for prostate enlargement, depression and psychosis.

Only if the condition interferes with fertility does it require treatment. If it is a side effect of medication, your doctor will switch you to a drug that does not affect ejaculation.

Sometimes it is not possible to restore normal ejaculation. If this is the case, and you want to father a child, a fertility specialist may be able to help.

Drug addiction can affect females as much as males Dr. Wallace: I’m an 18-year-old female. I have never taken any type of illegal drug in my entire life, and I seriously doubt that I ever will.

I’m also positive that all of my many close friends are drug-free, and we all talk about not getting involved with guys who are doing drugs. We are thinking that it must be a male thing to be into drugs. Do you agree?

– Nameless, Goshen, Indiana Dear Nameless: I agree. The American Council on Drug Education has stated that of teen drug addicts, 72 percent are males.

But females do become addicted to drugs, and their addiction is every bit as serious as addiction for males. Please read the following letter from a young mother who had a difficult time overcoming her drug habit: Dr. Wallace: I’m a young mother of two sons. When I was in high school, I took every drug I could get my hands on. I met a young man shortly after I graduated from high school (don’t ask me how I graduated; all I remember of high school is that I wanted to pass driver’s education) and with his love and understanding I went straight. Don’t think it wasn’t a chore, because I was addicted to heroin.

After two wonderful years of marriage, I started taking cocaine and it didn’t take long to discover that I could supplement the family income by selling a little cocaine as a sideline.

Unfortunately (probably fortunately) for me, one of my customers was an undercover cop.

Dr. Lisa Ridgway at the University of Colorado gave hormone tests to 162 high-achieving teens before final examinations and this is what she found: A week before finals, girls reported significantly more stress than boys. By examination day, girls’ level of stress hormone had risen more than 50 percent – to three times the boys’ stress levels, which were unchanged.

At age 13, both boys and girls had the same stress levels before tests, but as they got older, girls felt more stress while the boys’ stress levels actually dropped.

But even as girls get older and more comfortable in female roles, they still tend to feel uncomfortable about competition, Dr. Ridgeway said.

While girls felt more stress taking examinations, it didn’t affect their grades. In fact, the girls had slightly higher grades.

Kaneland may have interim superintendent soon KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – By next week, the Kaneland School District 302 Board is expected to name an interim superintendent.

Jeff Schuler, the current Kaneland superintendent, is leaving the district to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200. He starts his new job Sept. 2. Last week, Cheryl Krauspe, the president of the school board, issued a news release stating the board intends to name an Jeff Schuler interim superintendent before focusing the search for a permanent replacement for Schuler.

almost five hours on Monday night, most of it in executive session, and Krauspe said Tuesday the board hopes to provide a name for approval at next week’s meeting, set for Monday at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

“I think that Kaneland has been really fortunate that we have interest from so many highly qualified candidates who could fill the interim position,” Krauspe said. “It’s affirming that our reputation is such that we could draw the interest of people as highly qualified as they are.”

Krauspe said the candidates for the interim superintendent position all have experience that would benefit Kaneland. She said the board was “narrowing” the candidate list “to identify the best choice.”

Krauspe said it would be ideal to name an interim superintendent by next week so there could be some time for the person to meet

with Schuler before Schuler leaves the district. At that point, Krauspe said, the board can “turn our focus” to developing a timeline and procedures for considering candidates for the permanent superintendent position. Krauspe has indicated the process should include “input from all segments of the educational community and its stakeholders.”

Krauspe said the board has not discussed a timetable for the process, but she said she would like to have the position posted by Oct. 1. Meanwhile, she said the board would seek “community and staff engagement in determining the profile of the person we are looking for.”

According to a news release, any member of the community, as well as alumni and staff members, can submit names for nomination to the Hall of Fame committee. The submission deadline is Dec. 1.
