St. Charles EMA awarded accreditation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A division of the St. Charles Fire Department recently received an accreditation that only 22 other communities in Illinois have, according to a news release.

The St. Charles Emergency Management Agency, or EMA, on Monday officially received its award for “Accredited Agency” status through the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Jonathon Monken, the state agency’s director, made the presentation to St.

Charles Mayor Ray Rogina, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet and Paul Bumba, coordinator of the St. Charles agency, at the start of the Government Services Committee meeting that took place that day at the St. Charles Municipal Building in St. Charles.

The accreditation demonstrates that the St. Charles EMA is prepared with the proper planning and training in the event of an emergency, disaster or civil defense situation, according to the release.

“Our achievement of Accredited Agency status

demonstrates the commitment of the Emergency Management Agency to provide the highest levels of planning and quality service to our community,” Schelstreet wrote in the release.

“I am very appreciative of the leadership of EMA coordinator Paul Bumba and the dedication of all EMA members.”

The accreditation process

involved hundreds of hours of work and the participation of all city department and elected officials, according to the release.

The documentation is subject to a significant review process before the award is given.

It is a significant undertaking and all of the EMA members are part-time, according to the release.

A deeper look at double-crested cormorants GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Last week, when we looked at double-crested cormorants, we were lucky enough to have a TV show theme song that described this familiar, fish-eating species almost to a T – da-da-da dum, snap-snap – creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky ... .

This week, however, as we continue our exploration, the descriptors don’t flow quite as lyrically. But they do tell a remarkable story – Persecuted. Afflicted. Nearly extinct.

Protected. Recovered. Abundant. Controversial.

Da-da-da-dum, snap-snap ... .

If we were to step back in time a hundred years or so, we’d find that double-crested cormorants, or DCCOs, were common in Illinois during spring and fall migrations but otherwise maintained a low profile. A few pairs nested along the Illinois River although, seemingly, no one was happy about it. Regarded as threats to fishermen’s livelihoods, they dubbed the birds an uncomplimentary and unprintable nickname and summarily trapped, poisoned and shot as many as they could find.

As the 20th century progressed, so did humans’ impact on the environment – and on DCCOs. The use of dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) and other pesticides compounded in the food chain and resulted in a reduction in nesting success – not just for cormorants, but other birds, too, most notably the bald eagle.

Concurrently, water quality was on the skids. Uncurbed water pollution drove fish populations down and made suitable habitat hard to find.

DCCOs’ scant numbers plummeted even further, to the point where in 1960 they were added to the Illinois Endangered Species list.

The future looked grim for this enigmatic bird. But then, slowly, things began to change.

The protection afforded by the endangered status, along with North American bans on DDT and various other chemicals, as well as the passage of the Clean Water Act, helped DCCOs begin their recovery.

Wildlife management teams lent a hand, too, constructing artificial nesting platforms in known breeding areas along the Mississippi. From 12 nests in two trees in Carroll County in 1974, the birds’ Illinois breeding population grew to 16 nests in 1978 and more than 110 in 1984.

In our area, similar increases were noted.

According to Kane County Audubon’s Spring Bird Count data, no cormorants were noted from 1972, the year Kane County spring counts began, until 1986, when three birds were sighted. Three more were spotted during the 1989 spring count, and the birds have been seen in every year since. Birders counted 73 DCCOs in 2013, the most recent year for which data is available.

There’s no doubt, the cormorant population has turned a corner. You’d think that would mean that all is well, and our story could end with a, “And they all lived happily ever after.”

It could, were it not for the fact that DCCOs still face some significant challenges. Those same ghosts that haunted them before, in the form of allegations that they harm fish populations, still swirl in the air each time their name is mentioned.

Perhaps not so much locally, but certainly any place where sport fishing, commercial fishing and/or fish farming figure into local economies.

One common claim, that DCCOs have decimated the Great Lakes’ yellow perch population, has been studied extensively. For example, a three-year study of cormorants’ impact on fish popula-

But then, as water temperatures warmed and the fish moved to deeper parts of the lake, DCCO diets shifted to other species including gizzard shad and the invasive round goby.

Other studies have documented that the birds focus their foraging in shallower areas and consume nongame species like sticklebacks and sculpin. Still other research has shown perch’s vulnerability to mercury and other contaminants, as well as competition from introduced species. It would appear finger of blame for perch problems cannot be pointed solely at cormorants.

Another area of concern to wildlife biologists is the DCCO’s effects on habitat.

A gregarious species, cormorants will congregate in large numbers whenever they find conditions to their liking. Given their substantial size, along with their equally substantial, shall we say, “output,” cormorants can create quite a negative impact on vegetation below nests and roosts. Their acidic feces kill the trees and herbaceous plants, in effect ruining

the habitat for everyone but themselves.

Throughout the DCCO’s range, states have enacted various measures of control, including oiling eggs to prevent hatching and shooting birds deemed nuisances.

In 2013, a combined total of 21,312 DCCOs were shot in Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Vermont and Wisconsin, according to U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service statistics. And earlier this year, in South Carolina, hunters shot 11,653 of the birds during a special DCCO season that ran from Feb. 2 to March 1.

Simply put, that’s a lot of cormorants.

Were the hunts necessary? It depends on who you ask. So many factors and so

many opinions from so many interest groups weigh in to the decision that the entire issue turns murky. Which is probably why the USFWS in 2006 decided to hand over much of the responsibility for cormorant control measures to selected state and local agencies.

For an absorbing, and well-balanced, look at the topic of DCCOs and their impacts, both positive and negative, you might want to check out the book “The Double-Crested Cormorant: Symbol of Ecological Conflict.” Edited by outdoor writer Dennis Wild, the book provides a thorough examination of the bird’s natural history, its poor public image and what the future may hold for this perplexing species.

Perhaps instead of, or in addition to, reading, you’d like to head out and observe some local cormorants. You usually can find them foraging at several select sites along the Fox River, typically near dams, as well as many local ponds, including Fermilab’s Lake Law and A.E. Sea. At least so far, no one around here is shooting cormorants or oiling their eggs.

Maybe, just maybe, they’ll have a chance to live happily ever after.

LIGHTS, SIRENS, ACTION Annual parade highlights emergency vehicles

The sirens could be heard long before the lights could be seen, as excited children squealed in anticipation of the North Aurora Days Emergency Vehicle Lights and Sirens Parade.

Lights blinked on and off in patriotic red, white and blue, while shrieking sirens and bone-rattling honks filled the air while onlookers filled Route 31 Friday night as part of the annual weekend festival that continues through Sunday.

Featured police and fire trucks were from all over.

In addition to those from North Aurora, Batavia and Kane County, vehicles came from Bensenville, Wood Dale, Benedictine University, Hillside, Glen Ellyn, Darien, Hanover Township, Villa Park, DuPage and Kendall counties, Rib Lake, Wisconsin, as well as state patrol cars of Wisconsin, Missouri and Minnesota.

Vintage vehicles included fire trucks from the Aurora Regional Fire Museum and several from Chicago.

Families and other onlookers lined the streets waving and giving the thumbs up as drivers and passengers waved back.

“It’s a lot of fun for our kids,” said Lori Head of Leland. “They like the trucks, the lights and the sirens.”

NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Police Department is investigating an incident of public indecency and disorderly conduct following a girl’s encounter with a motorist Thursday evening, police said in a news release.

About 6 p.m. Thursday, near Western Drive and Sterkel Road, the 11-year-old girl was reportedly approached by a man in a car who asked her for directions to two locations.

The girl was unable to answer his questions, police said.

Police said the man then appeared to perform a sexual

act while in his car and continued to ask the girl sexually-related questions.

The girl reportedly left the scene unharmed, and the man drove south on Western Drive.

The man was described as white, average to heavy set and had short hair with a mustache and beard that was reddish brown, police said.

He reportedly wore a navy blue baseball cap and sunglasses.

His vehicle was a tan, four-door car, police said.

Geneva’s wood chipper damaged in car crash

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A driver was ticketed in a July 11 crash that damaged a wood chipper owned by the city of Geneva, recently released crash records show.

Marilyn B. Connor, 60, of the 1500 block of Fargo Boulevard, Geneva, was issued a ticket for failing to yield at a stop-or-yield intersection, records show.

According to the crash report, Connor was driving a 2011 Toyota Sienna south on South Randall Road and was waiting in the intersection to turn left onto Fargo Boulevard.

When the light turned yellow, she attempted to turn and did not see the city’s dump truck pulling a trailer with a wood chipper on it heading north through the intersection, according to the report.

The dump truck’s driver, Bradley J. Lichtenebert, 20, told police he saw the light turn yellow and knew he was not able to stop, so he tried to turn right to avoid a collision, the report states.

The two collided, spinning Connor’s Toyota almost 360 degrees. The dump truck with the trailer and wood chipper went off of the road, hit a curb and swiped a traffic pole, coming to rest off the road in a grass berm, the report states.

Witnesses told police they could not confirm the color of the light when the Toyota turned, according to the report.

No one was injured in the crash, but the city-owned wood chipper was damaged, according to the report. Information on the status of the wood chipper – whether it was repaired or replaced – was unavailable.

Day 1, June 13 As we arrived at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, many thoughts were going through my mind.

Mostly wondering what it was going to look like. If Tanzania would look like the stereotypical pictures of Africa that every American is used to seeing: the great plains filled with wild animals and an orange-toned hue.

Well, that’s not what I saw.

We traveled through empty roads with wandering goats and chickens on the side and through small towns with rundown shacks that were known as stores and restaurants to the people who lived there.

Kids running around with ragged clothes and women walking the streets balancing baskets of fruit on their heads and babies slung across their backs. It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but just the ride to the village alone was an eye-opener.

The village where we stayed in near Moshi was called Rafiki. Rafiki is a Christian-based foundation focused on building villages across Africa and creating school-systems that better the lives of African children. The Tanzanian village had about 57 orphans staying there. There were boys’ and girls’ cottages within the village, and each cottage had a “Mama” and an “Auntie” to take care of the

Wallace met Blessing for the first time during the trip, although she had known of her for a few years prior through a Rafiki newsletter that her family received.

Day 3, June 15 That morning we attended the Anglican church service at St. Margaret’s, which was a little church in the town of Moshi. On the way there, I was expecting a very modest, little building filled with joyous people from the town. The only part that was different from my expectations was the building. Although it wasn’t huge and overbearing, it was so much more beautiful than I was expecting. It had gorgeous exotic plants outside, and the doors were all open, inviting us inside. Beautiful stainedglass windows were apparent on almost every side of the building, with the African sun shining through.

All of the church members were so sweet and welcoming, it made me feel at home. The sound of the hymnals being sung in different accents (English, British and African) was enough to make me fall in love with the place.

After the service, I talked to one of the members. She was an African woman who had been attending the church for quite some time. She asked me whether I liked the service, and I said yes. I mentioned how one of my favorite things was the open doors.

After she gave me an astonished look, I explained how

– where I live – people might find it too risky or even too cold to leave the doors open.

It made me realize how even in foreign countries, people can take luxuries for granted.

The people there might not see open doors as a luxury, but coming from “The Windy City,” I would be so grateful to always have my doors open.

After a few days of getting to know the kids better, we helped out with their “Field Day,” which included different stations with different games for the kids.

In Tanzania, the school system works on a term basis.

There are about three-week breaks between each term, and when we arrived, their term was ending. This meant the beginning of “Games,” which is what the kids do in between each term to keep them active. Field Day was a way to kick off “Games Week.”

My mom and I were in charge of the limbo station.

Now, we are very familiar with the game limbo. African children, however, had no clue what we were doing standing there just the two of us with a stick. After explaining limbo and doing a couple runthroughs, the kids fell in love with the game. Seeing how a simple game such as limbo brightened their faces and gave them joy made my heart melt. A lot of kids typically aren’t content with an iPod shuffle, yet these children would be overjoyed if they were given a used jump rope.

In fact, most of them wander around the village looking for long pieces of weeds to use as a jump rope. And they even fight over them!

I recently went to Africa for about 20 days with my mom, Michelle Smith, and my life has been changed. We stayed in Moshi, Tanzania, in an orphanage right outside of town. This quote by Amy Carmichael perfectly captures my feelings about missions and how it feels to go and help the less fortunate: “Does it not stir up our hearts, to go forth and help them, does it not make us long to leave our luxury, our exceeding abundant light, and go to them that sit in darkness?”

Early detection key for treating glaucoma Anjali S. Hawkins M.D./Ph.D

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, which is the part of the eye that carries images to our brain.

The optic nerve can be compared to an electric cable. The nerve fibers are similar to the numerous wires that a cable might have within it. If damage occurs to the optic nerve fibers, blind spots may result that can never be corrected. However, these blind spots can remain undetected until 30-50% of the nerve fibers are damaged. If the entire nerve is destroyed, blindness occurs.

Early detection by your ophthalmologist (Eye MD) is the key to prevent optic nerve damage and blindness from glaucoma. Glaucoma is diagnosed by tonometry (measurement of intraocular pressure), gonioscopy (inspection of the drainage angle of the eye), ophthalmoscopy (dilated exam looking for optic nerve damage), and perimetry (visual field test of peripheral vision). It is very important to start treatment for glaucoma when it has been diagnosed since damage to vision caused by glaucoma is irreversible.

There is an instrument that ophthalmologists now use to try to detect glaucoma before there has been any damage to the central vision or peripheral vision. This instrument is called Optical Coherence

Tomography (OCT). It is able to provide quantitive measurement of the Nerve Fiber Layer (NFL) of the retina (wall paper of the back of the eye that contains the photoreceptors cells that help us to see). This is the specific part of the eye where glaucoma damage can occur. With this device, light is emitted and sent into the eye. The light reflects off various layers of the retina and this information is processed into measurements of density and thickness of the nerve fiber layer. This test is performed in the Eye MD’s office. It is noninvasive, painless and takes only a few minutes to do per eye.

A typical OCT print out compares the patient’s eyes nerve fiber layer measurements to thousands of normal eyes. If it is abnormally low, it could mean that you have glaucoma even though your central vision and peripheral vision is normal. Since 30-50% of the nerve fiber layer has to be damaged before more standardized testing such as perimetry can actually detect this damage, it is very exciting to have this newer tool that can help ophthalmologist detect glaucoma before any real visual damage has occurred.

types of glaucoma are very treatable. However, it continues to be one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. This is because patients are often diagnosed at a late stage of the disease since glaucoma is insidious in onset, painless and slowly progressive. Because central visual acuity is relatively unaffected until late in the disease, peripheral vision loss may be quite significant before symptoms are noted. Risk factors for glaucoma include having a family member that has or had glaucoma, older age (older than 65), race (African Americans), diabetes, myopia (near sighted), and cardiovascular disease. If you have one or more of these risk factors, you should see an ophthalmologist every year for a dilated comprehensive eye exam.

Treatment options for glaucoma include medicines (eye drops), laser and surgery. In general, most

Residents who will be away from their home for an extended period of time should connect some lamps to automatic timers to turn on in the evening and off during the day.

The St. Charles Police Department has a “Vacation Watch” program, which notifies police officers that a home will be unoccupied for a given period of time.

Since push-button locks on doorknobs are easy for burglars to open, police suggest installing deadbolt locks on all outside doors.

There also are special locks available for sliding glass doors, which can be vulnerable to burglar entry, according to the release.

St. Charles police urge residents to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity, so officers can investigate the incident.

One of the coolest experiences on this trip was the safari that we went on. It was my chance to see the Africa that I was used to seeing in pictures online. Also, I have an irrational obsession with elephants, so it was time to get my elephant fix. (I nearly cried at the first elephant I saw.)

It was just us two, my mom and me, in a safari truck with the roof elevated upward so we could stand and look out into the fields. We wandered down many different paths to find all of the different animals. We saw many giraffes, elephants, zebras and wildebeests, and we were even lucky enough to spot two female lions.

Seeing these creatures in their natural habitats, out in the wild, makes me look at zoos in a completely different perspective. Although zoos tend to help endangered species at times, it seems so unnatural for elephants and giraffes to be caged up in an exhibit. Especially when they are used to roaming the plains in Africa.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police hope some crime prevention tips can help continue to decrease the amount of burglaries reported in the city, according to a news release.

The number of burglary reports filed has been going down the last couple of years, but they still occur, the news release said.

A frequent crime reported to St. Charles police is burglary to a motor vehicle.

This is considered a crime of opportunity because someone will enter a vehicle and remove cash or other items that can be sold quickly for cash, such as GPS units, cellphones, wallets, purses, briefcases, cameras and stereos, according to the release.

St. Charles police suggest that residents park in welllit areas if they will not re-

turn to their cars until the evening.

Windows should be closed and doors locked, even if the car is left alone for only a short time.

Police also advise not leaving valuables in plain sight inside a vehicle.

Shopping packages should be placed in the trunk, and vehicles should be parked in garages whenever possible, according to the release.

Vehicles parked outside overnight should be parked close to the home or residence under outside lights.

Car alarms should be operational and ready to activate.

Residential burglaries continue to be reported on occasion in St. Charles, according to the release.

Police suggest making homes look occupied and difficult to enter.

The historic Jones Law Office, behind the Dunham-Hunt House at 304 Cedar Ave. in St. Charles, will be moved in late August about one mile south to Langum Park.

ST. CHARLES – A historic building in downtown St. Charles will have a new home by the end of this summer, said Peter Suhr, public works director for St. Charles. The Jones Law Office, located behind the Dunham-Hunt House at 304 Cedar Ave. in St. Charles, will be moved the week of Aug. 25, about one mile south to Langum Park, Suhr said.

The 14-foot-by-14-foot, single-room law office building was originally attached to a home that Ira Minard built in 1842 at 504 E. Main St., according to the St. Charles Historical Museum. It was later purchased by Steven Sandborn Jones in 1843, and the office was moved to the Dunham-Hunt House property in 1988, according to an executive summary of the proposed move.

The city had an option to relocate the building as part of its sale contract for the Dunham-Hunt House property, which was sold in 2013, the executive summary said.

The St. Charles City Council approved the law office’s re-

location earlier this year.

The city has hired Wheaton-based Muehlfelt Enterprises to transport the office down Third Avenue to Riverside Avenue, and from there to its future location at the south end of Langum Park, closer to Route 25 and Dever-

Walter’s greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Jo (Altomari); two daughters Laura (Scott) Swarts and Michelle (Jerry) Hagen both of South Elgin; four grandchildren Spencer and Sarah Swarts and Savannah and Collin Hagen; and his brother Joe (Dolores) Jones of Huntley;

Bill banning cruel horse practice stalls

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An effort by horse advocates to pass a bill that does more to stop the cruel practice of “soring” Tennessee Walking horses and two other breeds has apparently stalled, even with wide bipartisan support.

Soring is described as intentionally inflicting pain on the front legs and hooves of Tennessee Walking horses, Racking horses and Spotted Saddle horses to exaggerate their high-stepping gait, said Gail Vacca, president of Illinois Equine Humane Center in Maple Park.

“It is a horrifically cruel practice – just horrible,” said Vacca, who supports stronger legislation to end the practice. “It just defies description ... they use caustic chemicals on the horse’s legs and chains, shoes with nails sticking into their feet.

It’s totally sadistic. It’s sickening.”

Sue Balla of Casey’s Safe Haven in Elburn agreed more needs to be done to stop soring.

“They do this so the horses will pick their feet up higher in the show ring,” Balla said. “It is a horrific, cruel, barbaric thing to do to an animal. They are forcing them to be in so much pain so that they will pick their feet up higher. That is the show world.”

Diana Anshakov of Newark said she stopped showing her own Tennessee Walking horses because of the abuse in the industry. She has been working to get support for HR 1518, a bill pending in committee. The bill would amend the Horse Protection Act, which already bans soring, to have USDA

enforcement so the industry is no longer policing itself. It also would increase penalties, among other provisions.

The bill has 190 Democratic and 115 Republican co-sponsors across the country – from Hawaii to Florida, New York to Texas. In Illinois, 16 of 18 representatives are co-sponsors except U.S. reps. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and John Shimkus, R-Collinsville.

The bill has wide support from humane, veterinarian and equine organizations that testified at hearings late last year, but it remains stalled in the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee.

Anshakov said she believes if three more Republicans became co-sponsors, the bill would move on for a vote.

Anshakov said having 118 Republicans on board as sponsors would fulfill the “Hastert rule,” an unwritten rule that a bill should not advance for a vote unless it was a “majority of a majority” ensuring it would pass.

Anshakov said she called the offices of both Hultgren and Shimkus to ask for their support as co-sponsors. She said an aide told her Shimkus would not because he is not on the committee. A spokesman for Shimkus could not confirm his stance on the bill.

Anshakov said she told Hultgren’s office she did not live in his district.

“I asked him to join my Rep.

[Adam] Kinzinger [R-Channahon] and 16 of 18 Illinois representatives and both Illinois senators in co-sponsoring the bill,” Anshakov said.

In a June 30 letter, Hultgren thanked Anshakov for sharing her concerns.

“I will keep your views in mind should HR 1518 reach the House floor,” Hultgren’s letter to Anshakov states. “Whether at a show or in the home, how we treat our animals reflects the values of our society. We should be promoting a culture of life and protecting the vulnerable among us – people and animals alike.”

Hultgren’s Democratic opponent in the Nov. 4 election, Dennis Anderson, called the incumbent out for not co-sponsoring the bill.

“This is just a common-sense, a common-decency bill, and we should get everyone on board and pass the thing,” Anderson said. “I’m not a ‘horse’ person, but I’m committed to animal welfare issues. It’s a barbaric practice, and it’s illegal. It’s an under-regulated industry that is allowed to police itself.”

A spokesman for Hultgren said the Hastert rule does not necessarily determine movement of a bill, as many come up for votes with fewer sponsors than the anti-soring bill.

Instead, the spokesman said it is up to the House leadership – Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-California, and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana – to bring the an-

HAMPSHIRE TOWNSHIP – Alcohol appears to have played a role in a motorcycle accident Friday that resulted in potentially life-threatening injuries for two men, Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler said.

John Beach, 22, of the 13N100 block of Engel Road, Sycamore, and Benjamin Fletcher, 26, of the 43W000 block of Carletta Lane, Elgin, were flown from Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge following a crash in unincorporated Hampshire Township, he said.

Kane County sheriff’s deputies and Hampshire police responded to Allen Road east of Walker Road about 1:50 a.m. for a report of two motorcycles involved in a crash.

Authorities believe the men were traveling together, Gengler said, but authorities don’t know what caused the accident. “[We] probably need more of the physical evidence to tell us what happened,” he said.

As of Friday afternoon, the crashed remained under investigation by sheriff’s investigators and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.

Gengler said neither man was wearing a helmet, and alcohol appears to have been a factor.

Fletcher was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and operating an uninsured vehicle. He reportedly was released on an I-bond at St. Joseph before being flown to Lutheran General.

Beach had not been charged with anything as of Friday afternoon, Gengler said.

Be careful with political messages Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner has taken some heat recently for manipulating headlines in his latest TV ad to help his cause in the race to replace Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.

The commercial, called “Headlines,” uses newspaper headlines over images of Quinn to attack him and his record on issues such as jobs, the income tax increase, education funding and the federal investigation into his anti-violence program.

A review of the commercial by the Chicago Tribune revealed the headlines don’t accurately reflect the source cited.

Rauner’s campaign, predictably, defended the practice and the ad. “The TV ad does not say everything that appears on screen was a headline,” spokesman Mike Schrimpf wrote in an email to The Associated Press.

“Due to time and space constraints, some of the phrases had to be condensed.”

Unfortunately, the tactic employed by the Rauner camp is not unique. Political candidates manipulate headlines, newspaper stories and sound bites routinely in advertising and direct-mail literature.

The fact that it is routine does not excuse Rauner or anyone else seeking public office for producing such misleading messages.

It’s a shame that those wanting to represent the people in a public role treat the public with such disdain by choosing to skew the message with questionable manipulation.

Then lawmakers wonder why trust in government is at an all-time low. Candidates engender mistrust before they are even elected.

Voters aren’t blameless, however. The reason candidates can get away with these kinds of advertisements is because they are effective.

Why? Because some voters are too lazy to research claims candidates make and assume that what’s broadcast is true.

The lesson here is not that political candidates should know better, although they should treat voters with more respect.

The lesson here is that voters should make the effort to learn about each candidate independently. Do your own research.

Don’t rely on politically charged messages from the candidates or political action groups to help form your opinion on the issues.

We were the leader, as well as the Ugly American; no good deed goes unpunished.

I’m calling about this illegal immigrant situation and I, like many people, agree that we shouldn’t have to pay taxes to support people who have entered our country illegally.

Yet, at the same time, I think people are very deceived at what our amazing immigrant ancestors did compared to what is happening now.

Especially, there is a caller that stated their ancestors came here and couldn’t get a job until they could speak English, which they had to pay to learn and go to school.

Guess what? Obviously untrue.

Most immigrants came here with very little money in their pocket, and they couldn’t get a job as a banker or lawyer, so they worked as laborers in factories until they could learn enough English to get a better job.

If we didn’t have a lot of immigrants doing these jobs, we can’t even hire an American-born person to do a lot of these jobs.

They don’t want to do it. They don’t want to clean toilets and scrub floors and work hard for the minimum wage.

It is these immigrant people who are doing this because they need the money, so let’s stop glorifying our wonderful ancestors and putting down the current generation of immigrants.

Excitement builds for the Crown Rich Harvest Farms prepares to host international LPGA event in 2016

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – Taking the podium at the Hotel Arista in his native Naperville on Friday, LPGA commissioner Mike Whan delivered a disclaimer to those assembled for lunch.

Whan was highly caffeinated, and everyone seated at the first few tables might be inside “the spit zone.”

As excitement swirled at the kickoff luncheon for the 2016 LPGA International Crown, the man who will be host wanted to burst, too. Alas, Rich Harvest Farms owner Jerry Rich worked not to grin himself thin. There’ll be plenty more to come as the 32-player, eight-nation match-play event nears its descent on Sugar Grove two years from now.

“I would say our tournament, maybe the following tournament, this will be one of the major tournaments for the LPGA,” Rich said. “There’s no doubt about it.”

The Crown, won by Spain in its inaugural playing at Maryland’s Caves Valley this past weekend, will come to Rich Harvest Farms seven years after the course hosted The Solheim Cup in 2009.

A biennial team competition like the Crown, the Solheim pits only the United States against Europe. The United States, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Spain, Sweden, Chinese Taipei and Australia competed at Caves Valley, capturing the global scale of women’s golf.

The 2016 field of nations will be determined by a rankings system at the end of the 2015 LPGA season.

In 2014, the LPGA scheduled 15 of its 32 tournaments outside the United States. That’s certainly a boost to international players, who still have their favorite American courses despite more worldwide layouts from which to choose.

With RHF offering just 50 rooms on its property – typically reserved for players – Rich reached out to his alma mater, Northern Illinois University, as well as Aurora University, about dormitory space.

“When I asked Dr. Baker if he had rooms available, he said, ‘You can have them all,’ ” Rich said.

LPGA vice president Kelly Hyne said the organization was not yet ready to release attendance figures for last week’s Crown, but Whan spoke of encouraging TV ratings for a first-time endeavor.

RHF also will host the Palmer Cup – a Ryder Cup-style event pitting the top 10 American collegiate golfers against their European counterparts – in June 2015.

The crown will be just 13 months away then. Imagine Rich’s anticipation.

“We’ve got two years, plus we’ve been working it for over two years already, so that’s four years,” Rich said. “And there isn’t too many people we’re not going to touch, especially in the ethnic communities, as well as the corporate communities.

“Everybody’s extremely excited about it. Plus, being at Rich Harvest, everybody wants to come out and see the grounds and see the beauty of the facilities that we built, and that’s all part of it. Because I love to share it with all the communities.”

McCaffrey said there typically are “two or three” prospective lacrosse athletes each year that express interest but can’t afford the costs of competing at the club level, which include an annual fee of $650. The D-303 plan calls for participation fees of $400 for the first year decreasing to $110 over a four-year period as start-up costs of phasing in the sport gradually lessen.

The proposal from Dolney and Sommerfeld in part contends “lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and there are currently 172 of our students that play the sport. These athletes currently play for the St. Charles Lacrosse club and they want to play for the high schools. We feel there is a large enough need to accommodate this opportunity for them.”

School districts throughout the Chicago area have been reluctant to take action toward adding lacrosse and pushing for an IHSA state series as finances and space concerns during the spring season have dampened their enthusiasm.

But given the participation in communities such as St. Charles, it’s increasingly difficult to justify funding sports that attract considerably smaller pools of athletes while putting off lacrosse.

If the proposal in St. Charles is approved, it could embolden other schools to follow suit and show that lacrosse’s days outside the mainstream are officially over.

Transitioning lacrosse from the club realm to sports sponsored by the St. Charles East and St. Charles North athletic departments likely would raise the sport’s already substantial profile in St. Charles.

St. Charles has long been a lacrosse hotbed – at least by west suburban standards – and a pending proposal for boys and girls lacrosse to become official, school sports would allow the sport to blossom further, St. Charles North boys lacrosse coach Sean McCaffrey said.

“I think any kind of change that improves something is worth it,” McCaffrey said. “In this case, they want to help us financially. If it goes through, I think that’s a great thing. Lowering fees for more students to be able to participate, that’s great. Any coach would want to tell you they want more numbers in their program. I definitely do, and lowering the cost definitely helps that.”

The District 303 school board is expected to vote Aug. 11 on a joint proposal from East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld and North AD Dan Dolney to include the lacrosse teams as part of the schools’ athletic departments.

The ADs’ proposal estimates adding the teams would cost the district about $75,000 annually between coaching stipends, equipment, transportation and other assorted costs.

Members of the board’s Community Relations Committee reviewed the proposal Monday.

Lacrosse is not yet an IHSA sport, though that could change in the next year or two after a series of false starts on that front in recent years.

“To me, it’s kind of inevitable,” McCaffrey said. “A lot of people think lacrosse is still up-and-coming. I think that’s wrong. Lacrosse is here. School districts, they know that it’s here. They

Barring more flurries of roster moves, the shelf life figures to last well beyond that.

The club welcomed the player to be named later in the parent Cubs’ trade of Darwin Barney to the Los Angeles Dodgers to his new home before a 6-2 win against Quad Cities.

Right-hander Jonathan Martinez will start against the River Bandits today, when he could pitch to fellow welcome wagoner Victor Caratini, a catcher the Cubs acquired from the Atlanta Braves for Emilio Bonifacio and James Russell. The switch-hitting Caratini arrived about 90 minutes after Friday’s first pitch.

Farm systems offer valuable player development time VIEWS Kevin Druley GENEVA – Minor League Baseball president Pat O’Conner scans a vast bank of observation over the years and recalls seeing many of today’s top major leaguers excel as prospects.

Talking at length about what they’ve accomplished since is another story.

“I am probably not a real good barometer of individual players because I’ve got the spectrum of 4 to 5,000,” O’Conner said Monday during a visit to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. “The fan in me will follow the trade papers to see who’s doing well. [ESPN] ‘SportsCenter’ and MLB [Network] and

those kind of [shows] keep me plugged in.

“But … so much of what we do is not about the players that my focus tends to be about helping the [minor league owners] of the world be able to do what they need to do.”

This week, that entailed supporting an endeavor between the Cougars and parent Cubs that saw Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts visit the Cougars’ stadium for the first time.

Addressing The Executives Club of Chicago as part of the organization’s luncheon speakers series, Ricketts spoke extensively about the Cubs’ long-term strategy of building a successful farm system as the major league product absorbs some lumps.

“Player development” was a notion oft-used.

O’Conner, elected the MiLB president in December 2007 after an extensive career as a baseball executive, certainly can relate.

“On any given night or any given day or game [in the minors], you’re going to see major league plays,” he said. “What I don’t have the benefit of, is watching that player for a week or 10 days to see if he makes that same play. And that’s part of what our process is, is to take that player who’s a prospect, who’s got great athleticism, who’s got a high upside, just make sure he gets a chance to go on to the next level.”

O’Conner estimates he has visited Fifth Third Bank Ballpark a handful of times through the years, but just twice since the venue added a number of renovations before the 2009 season, includ-

ing a covered concourse and an expanded suite level.

Although Ricketts or Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich did not announce this week that the sides were extending the player-development contract that expires at season’s end, O’Conner sees a mutual benefit.

“There’s no question a geographic proximity sure helps,” he said. “It’s a winwin. … It helps the Cubs for rehab assignments, for their staff to be able to come in and see the players, visit with the players. So yeah, it’s a big plus.”

The Cougars entered Friday’s series opener against Quad Cities with seven runs in their past five games as part of a season-high six-game losing streak.

Wednesday’s loss at Wisconsin marked the seventh time the team was shut out this season.

It also was the second straight night the Cougars stranded the tying run in scoring position to end the game.

Is there anything that you put your finger on in terms how you took that step forward. Was there something in particular that really clicked?

Not really. Our teammates, we’ve gotten each other involved early in games and we just kept clicking with each other.

Did you notice [Izzo and Beilein] at that game?

Yeah, I did. It was pretty cool. … During the game when we started pulling away at the end, we were thinking to ourselves, ‘Wow, this is amazing, we just beat a really good team in front of Izzo and Beilein.’

Was this tournament the best How did you hook up with the ball you’ve played in your life?

Tri-City Thunder?

Probably. I played pretty well.

How did you do most of your scoring?

Couple of pull-up jumpers, fast breaks and 3s.

Eighth grade, Josh Rader contacted me and asked me to play, and ever since then we’ve gained a pretty good team and family.

What does your fall look like?

Do you still play a lot of ball?

Do you consider yourself more of a point guard or a shooting guard?

Yeah, I play almost every day and do workouts.

Kind of both. I can bring up the ball and still score.

How much confidence do you take out of AAU season with the way it played out?

How much did the tournament help get your name out there?

I took a lot of confidence.

Our whole team and me personally took a big step forward, and hopefully it carries into the North season.

St. Charles North junior boys basketball guard Mike Schroeder has yet to play varsity-level basketball but will enter next season already somewhat of a known commodity after a strong summer, highlighted by helping his 16U Tri-City Thunder AAU team prevail at the GRBA National Championships last weekend in Fort Wayne, Indiana Playing on a team that includes area talents such as Batavia’s Canaan Coffey, Geneva’s Loudon Vollbrecht and St. Charles East’s James McQuillan, Schroeder had some monster games, including scoring outbursts of 30 and 29 points in two of the wins.

One of the Thunder’s games was played with Michigan State coach Tom Izzo and Michigan coach John Beilein in attendance. In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, Schroeder – whose second cousin, Michael Schroeder, is a former North basketball player – discusses his breakout summer.

My baby has no more baby teeth.

How did that even happen?

She yanked out the last loose one last month and didn’t even bother putting it under her pillow for the Tooth Fairy. She’s a teenager, after all, and nobody is allowed to enter her room without knocking. Phooey. I wish I’d realized, then, that it was the last one, as I would have relished the moment more, but I didn’t discover this until she had her teeth cleaned on Wednesday.

Shoot. If I had, I’d have done a jig.

Or said something totally embarrassing (or “inspirational,” as Holly likes to call my commentary whilst rolling her eyes), or at least snuck in anyway, with the hopes that finding a celebratory $20 under her pillow (just for the last tooth!) would make up for my trespassing. But I didn’t know. I wonder where that tooth is now?

Parenting surprises like this one remind me of those times when I’ve reached for the last piece of candy at the bottom of the box and then made the horrible discovery that I was already THERE. Know what I mean? I was already there, at the bottom of the box, already ate the last one, and I’ll never get that moment back to really relish it.

You know, in that “Oooh,this is the last one … isn’t it lovely and yummy and perfect?” kind of way. (Of course, had I just mindfully eaten the first one in that way in the first place, since the first bite tastes EXACTLY THE SAME as the last, for Pete’s sake, I might not find myself at the bottom of the dang

I do try to be present and aware of every transition my kids make, but then, we’re kinda heading into deeper waters where I won’t be privy to them all. And we can all be grateful for that.

Ha. My kids are not the only ones making transitions. Everywhere I turn, it seems big shifts are afoot. (Is it just me, or have the last few weeks been particularly shift-y?) I hear stories of new offspring and new jobs, of offspring landing new jobs (I’m looking, too, actually, for a counseling position), and of aging parents on the move – my Mom included.

I paused as we packed, to play her old upright piano, the last time we visited her a few weeks ago (in New York).

This old, fire-engine-red beauty (oh, I suppose it was already quite old when we adopted it), was the one I first learned how to play, nearly 40 year ago.

Back then, I played chopsticks ’til I was breathless, enjoyed warm family gatherings while Grandma played and others accompanied her with their instruments and voices, and practiced in my finger gloves on cooler days, in the hard-to-heat cathedral-ceilinged living room of that house (sold some 30

years ago).

Yeah, good times. I recall being aware, this time, though, that it would be the last time I would ever play it, as I knew Mom was downsizing and wouldn’t be hauling it again, to her new place. I played a watered-down version of “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” but it sounded kind of awful as the piano needed tuning. Mom said it tuned nicely, though. After Holly and I filled a few more boxes I triumphantly discovered, in a dusty corner, the longlost strip of red-painted veneer that had fallen off ages before. I laid it across the keys, one of them broken (when did that happen?), figuring I’d get around to gluing it back on. I never did.

Instead, I got on a plane, lived over a week without my only shower while the thing was demolished, repaired and tiled, painted my fence, hung out with my kids, kept an eye on their jobs (and my own job search) and lots of other stuff – and somehow forgot to ask Mom, before it was too late,“So, yeah, about the piano … .”

But it was. By the time I did get around to asking, it was too late.

“You don’t wanna know,” she admitted when I did, as she rattled off a flush of other post-mortems about what else she’d managed to cross off her moving to-do list that week.

My question came just one day after the deed was done, after she’d made a few calls in the hopes that she could give the big red beast away, and there was no going back. I knew, of course, that her move was imminent (she moves this weekend), but her house

isn’t on the market yet. I thought I had time.

“It didn’t tune well, anyhow, right?”

I asked, knowing full well that she’d already said it could be. My 8-year-old heart hoped for a different answer, but it didn’t come.

Truth is, an old, beat-up, un-tuned upright, no matter its promise or provenance, means precious little to a stranger, with eyes only for how expensive it will be to move and retune it (necessary after a move). You can’t give these old pianos away. But still, what if I’d had it tuned? What if I’d made just a few more calls, posted a few free-to-a-good-home ads? What if? I felt like I betrayed it. The lump in my throat didn’t go away for a week.

Some moments just cannot be reeled back in. They must be grieved. If we are to not lose our minds over the grief – over the last tooth or the laid-to-rest piano – or even some other dear one who has died, whom we were sure we’d have time to hug just one more time – it seems we must choose to accept that we just cannot always do or notice it all, in time. Try as we might, chances are that some things, some milestones, opportunities and moments, will slip past unnoticed. Such is life.

Of course, when it’s possible, I’m not above employing the better-latethan-never technique. So, yeah, where is that darned tooth?

How does your garden grow ... at work I work at a marina in southern Wisconsin.

Last year, I planted a few large containers with cherry tomatoes near the entrance to our showroom.

This year, I wanted to plant a small garden with a nautical theme. Dalton, our sales manager, suggested a pontoon tube – great idea! In asking around, I discovered that we had a partial tube at our storage property.

Dennis, our welder, was nice enough to cut out the top section of the pontoon tube to open it up for planting and to cap the end.

The end result was a 6-by-2 foot planting area with holes for drainage – perfect for my small

Next, adding soil. I used a variety of products – potting soil, garden soil, mushroom compost, humus, and cow manure. This accomplished two goals – keeping the cost down and giving me some soil with nutrients.

In the top 2 to 4 inches, I added a balanced 10-10-10 slow release fertilizer that would feed the garden for most of the season.

Next, planting. I chose both cool weather crops like kohlrabi, chard, rumex, kale, chives, and parsley.

Next the warm weather plants, cherry tomatoes – Sun Gold and Black Cherry, eggplant, hot peppers, bush cucumber, nasturtium, rosemary, two types of oregano, thyme, and French tarragon. While these plants offer a variety of textures and color, I also planted heat-loving gazanias, dusty miller and lantana.

The garden has been robust, in part, due to planning and – in part – just plain, old luck.

• GARDENING Continued from page 31 As the kale, kohlrabi and Swiss chard have been harvested, the warm loving plants – tomatoes, eggplant, and herbs – have filled in and flourished.

This was the plan.

The nice surprise was the rapid rate of growth created by the microclimate because of the location.

The planter receives early afternoon sun through sunset.

Because of the aluminum pontoon tube and the reflective heat from the stone building, the soil warmed up very quickly this spring and did not lose heat over-

night.

Even though we have had some very cool nights this summer, the little pontoon garden is producing like crazy and looks beautiful.

Colorful edibles, such as rumex Raspberry Dressing and Bright Lights Swiss chard, also add color.

Shortly, I plan to scatter a few beet seeds and lettuce seeds for fall harvest.

He’s tan; drives an expensive car; his suits look custom made. You know the type; he’s rich … must be.

We all do it, judge a book by its cover and then make assumptions about a person’s character and lifestyle. Once sized up, we either reject them or invite them in for a closer look.

We’re so caught up in judging others that we fail to see that we are all just the product of chance and circumstance. That person could be you, if life had been different.

Where would you be today if you had been blessed, lets say, with nurturing parents who had loved you and encouraged you to pursue your dreams? What if you had married the first person you fell in love with? What if you hadn’t rejected that job offer? Or taken that friend’s suggestion to start a business? What if your talents lent themselves best for a career as an orthopedic surgeon? Or maybe you were blessed instead with artistic talents.

What if you’d gotten out of the stock market one day earlier? Or had a rich uncle? How would your life be different if the chances and circumstances had been different? Chance and circumstance shape the cover of our lives, not the content; and yet it’s the cover that everyone judges.

We should all be blind. Then we could see each other for what we truly are, the true person, not the stuff. Our outsides are just a test to see if others can look beyond the exterior.

Sometimes it’s really hard to.

I like to think of others as part of a flower garden. Some people have beautifully intricate petals, but upon closer inspection you notice their thorns. Others are not very showy, yet their fragrance is intoxicating. Put them all together and you have a truly magnificent garden.

By ALLISON STEWART Special to The Washington Post If you’re a rock star of a certain age, you might figure that there is no longer much point in releasing new material.

You can usually expect decent first-week sales from the 50,000 or so baby boomers who still buy albums, followed by a nosebleed descent down the charts. Your new songs will serve as a convenient excuse for arena show bathroom breaks before being quietly dropped from the set list before the start of the outdoor touring season. And that’s if things go well.

Propelled by a combination of forward momentum and sheer orneriness, Tom Petty is one of a few classic rock artists still regularly releasing new original material, and lots of it; solo albums, live souvenirs, records with his longtime band the Heartbreakers. He’s never really had a comeback, because he never really went away. He’s always been there, an immutable fact, like gravity.

Petty and the Heartbreakers’ new album, “Hypnotic Eye,” is their best in more than a decade, which is saying something. Their preceding release, 2010’s classic blues-inspired “Mojo,” was probably more fun to make than it is to listen to, although even Petty’s lesser albums are unfailingly workmanlike and respectable. Even at the height of his early 1990s top-hatted, dragging-arounda-dead-Kim-Basinger VH1 ridiculousness, Petty had a grave, curmudgeonly dignity.

Petty recently told Rolling Stone that “Hypnotic Eye” is a (mostly unconscious) throwback to his first two albums, “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers” and “You’re Gonna Get It!” – both of which are sainted in hindsight, and with good reason. It’s become commonplace for old-timers to self-reference (and sometimes painstakingly re-create) their iconic early work – because it’s easier, because it’s safer, because they’re as nostalgic for the younger versions of themselves as their fans are. That Petty is backed by one of the finest and most singular bands in the world in a way only complicates things: Mike Campbell’s film noir guitars and Benmont Tench’s nimble organ work, which are familiar to anyone who has listened to classic rock radio in the past 30 years, turn these new songs into instant nostalgia delivery systems.

Petty eulogizes an unreachable future (“Mama’s so sad / Daddy’s just mad / ‘cause I ain’t gonna have the chance he had”) on the howling opener “American Dream Plan B,” he “feel[s] like a four-letter word” on the “American Girl”-reminiscent “Forgotten Man” and he examines the excesses of power on the rangy, self-explanatory “Power Drunk.”

Bruce Springsteen – Petty’s only real living analog, now that Bob Dylan has officially gone around the bend – addresses similar grievances, but at a be-

nevolent remove. Petty is in the trenches, rattling around loser towns “stealing gas with a garden hose” (on the back porch blues “Burnt Out Town”), and plotting his eventual escape (“I see what I want / I go after it,” he sings from behind a wall of old school, Stone Temple Pilots-style vocal distortion on “American Dream Plan B”).

For many artists, rock stardom is a slow-mo dive into Otherness, but Petty, the evergreen Everyman, has long benefited from an unwritten contract with fans: He resists becoming a well-fed, self-satisfied caricature of himself, and they pretend not to notice that he has been a rich white guy living in Malibu longer than he hasn’t been a rich white guy living in Malibu.

Petty holds up his end of the bargain here, occupying these songs from the inside out, serving up equal helpings of righteous pique, withering disdain, unexpected tenderness (on the expansive ballad “Sins of My Youth”) and occasional optimism.

Unlike, say, Steven Tyler, Petty still makes for a credible rock star well into his 60s, partly because he has always sounded the way he does now: old and weathered and wistful, even in his youth. “Hypnotic Eye” doesn’t feel like a retreat into the safety of his back catalogue, but rather a natural extension of it, as if he figured he might as well reclaim a past he can’t outrun.

Changes in cervical cancer screening Dear Doctor K: I am 31 years old and have always had normal Pap smears. I just read that HPV testing might be better. What do you suggest?

Dear Reader: Screening for cervical cancer has led to a dramatic decrease in the disease. Until fairly recently, all cervical cancer screening was done by Pap smear.

But the FDA recently approved the use of a new screening tool – the HPV DNA test – that may eventually take its place.

Most cases of cervical cancer or precancerous cervical changes are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are more than 100 different types of HPV; some (but not all) types of HPV can cause cervical cancer.

When HPV causes an infection of the cells of the cervix, it changes the shape of those cells. That abnormal shape is what shows up in a Pap smear. The Pap test can’t see HPV; it just shows the cell changes caused by HPV. Those changes were recognized many decades before anyone knew that cervical cancer was caused by a virus, and that the virus was HPV. Until recently, HPV DNA tests were only used together with Pap tests. If a woman’s Pap test found

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff abnormal cervical cells, HPV DNA tests could identify whether the woman carried the types of HPV more likely to cause cervical cancer.

The problem with that strategy is that the Pap test is not perfect.

There are women who have an HPV infection that is causing cervical cancer (or a precancerous condition) but who have a “normal” Pap test. If the Pap is falsely negative, the HPV test wouldn’t be ordered. So, the woman would lose out on a second chance to diagnose the cancer.

The FDA has now approved the HPV test for screening in place of Pap smears in women age 25 and older. The advantage is that the HPV DNA test is much more sensitive than the Pap test in detecting early cases of cervical cancer caused by HPV. But there’s a problem with HPV testing, as well. Most HPV infections – especially in young women – go away without treatment and do not lead to cancer. So many HPV tests will be abnormal

in women who don’t have cancer.

But the abnormal test will generate fear – and additional (unnecessary) testing.

In general, I follow the guidelines on cancer screening issued by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. This is an independent panel of experts in primary care and prevention funded by the federal government. Currently, the panel recommends: • Ages younger than 21: Cervical cancer screening is not recommended.

• Ages 21 to 29: Pap smears every three years.

• Ages 30 to 65: Pap smears every three years, or screening by a combination of Pap smear and HPV testing every five years.

• Ages 65 and over: Screening is not recommended if recent Pap tests are normal.

You and your doctor should discuss which test is best for you.

Consider your personal preferences, each test’s risks and benefits, your medical history and your individual risk of cervical cancer.

Tell parents what happened Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and enjoy babysitting for a divorced mother with two children. Her daughters are ages 5 and 3.

The mother of the children has an 18-yearold brother who lives with his father. Last week he came by when I was babysitting and said that he had run out of gas.

He told me he left his cellphone at home and asked if he could use the telephone to call a friend to help him. Of course, I said yes. After he called his friend, and as he left he said, “You are a very pretty young lady.” I said thanks and never gave his visit another thought.

Last night I was babysitting again, and once again, the brother came over and asked if he could use the phone. This time he said that someone had broken into his car and stolen his wallet and cellphone and he needed to notify the police.

Again, I allowed him to use the phone. He sounded like he was talking to an officer, so I didn’t suspect that anything was amiss.

After he hung up he started telling me that I was beautiful and that I “turned him on.” Before I could say no, he grabbed and kissed me. I tried to push him away, but he was too strong. I really got scared and started crying and so did the children I was sitting for.

He then let me go, swore at me and took off saying that he never wanted to see me again.

I haven’t told my parents about this and I didn’t tell the lady I babysit for about her brother. Please give me your advice and hurry.

Dear Teens: When taking an examination and you are not quite sure of the answer, the first one that comes into your thoughts is not your best chance of getting it right.

Frank Whitehouse at the University of Michigan became intrigued with test taking and conducted a three-year research study on this subject.

After analyzing hundreds of answer sheets and tests taken by nursing, pharmacy and dental students at the University of Michigan, Mr. Whitehouse found that the majority of students who changed their original answer actually improved their scores.

Most times the first answer wasn’t correct.

Remember, though, that changing an answer is only recommended when you are not sure if your first answer is correct.

The study also found that there is little relationship between test scores and the amount of time students spend taking tests. Therefore, students should be instructed to work at their own pace and disregard students who finish early.
