‘New adventure’: Kaneland plans homecoming parade Inaugural event will be in Elburn ELBURN – Next month, Kaneland High School students will be able to participate in a homecoming parade.

Such parades are common at many other high schools, but that has not been the case in Kaneland School District 302. Jill Maras, Kaneland High School’s principal, said the district has “a unique situation,” since it includes students from nine communities.

Al Lagattolla much brainstorming about the situation, and a solution emerged. The parade’s location will be rotated on a four-year basis, in alphabetical order, throughout four of the villages in the district – Elburn, Kaneville, Maple Park and Sugar Grove. This year’s parade will be Sept. 30 in Elburn.

“We’re excited about this new adventure,” Maras said.

Maras said school officials met with the village presidents of each town, and there will be more discussions over the details.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson, a Kaneland graduate, said it is the first time the school has had such a parade. He said there were celebrations at the school in the past, but a parade never before has been part of a community celebration.

“They would like to do it in all of the communities,” Anderson said. “And I think that’s a good idea.”

Kaneland’s homecoming football game will be Oct. 2, a Friday. Its homecoming dance is scheduled for Oct. 3. The parade is set for a Wednesday.

Anderson said it is unlikely the parade would be staged on Route 47, since such a route would be difficult to arrange because of

heavy traffic. He said there will continue to be discussions about the parade route.

Maras said the parade likely will start at 5 p.m., and it will provide a buildup for the annual powder puff football game at the school.

Maras said there also would be efforts to decorate each town in anticipation of the school’s homecoming game, including the painting of windows.

“We just have a desire to try and build school spirit and have all of the communities be a part of that,” Maras said.

AURORA – Presence Health has announced the selection of Michael Englehart as the new president and CEO of the health system.

He replaces Sandra Bruce, who is retiring after seven years of leading Presence Health and one of its predecessors, Resurrection Health Care, according to a news release from Presence Health. Englehart will begin Oct. 1.

Presence Health has more than 150 sites of care, including Presence Mercy Medical

Center in Aurora and Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

Englehart brings nearly 20 years of health care experience to Presence Health, including more than a decade at Advocate Health Care, the release stated. Most Michael recently, Englehart Englehart served as president of Advocate Physician Partners, leading the health care system’s clinically integrated network of 4,900 physicians and 13 hospitals.

clinical alliances and strategic partnerships and fostering collaboration to create highly integrated models of care, he has the experience, leadership and vision to successfully lead the transformational strategies we have embraced at Presence Health,” said Guy Wiebking, chairperson of the Presence Health Board, in the release.

Englehart said he was honored to be given the opportunity to lead an innovative, Catholic-sponsored health system, such as Presence Health.

“I look forward to helping Presence Health make an impact on the communities we are privileged to serve,” he said in the release.

Englehart lives in Palos Heights with his wife and children.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North High School drill team’s Kick-A-Thon car wash is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at McDowell Remodeling, 521 W. Main St., St. Charles.

Proceeds will help raise money for Kick-A-Thon 2015.

Now in its 22nd year, the event raises money for the American Cancer Society, LivingWell Cancer Center and Fox Valley Food For Health. Last year, the St. Charles East and North drill teams raised more than $100,000 – a new record.

Emergency Retiring fire marshal leaves ‘big shoes’ to fill If you go response course to be offered

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The village of North Aurora is offering a basic emergency response class for residents that will be jointly taught by members of the North Aurora police and fire departments.

The Community Emergency Response Team course begins with an overview of disaster preparation – including both classroom and handson practical exercises – and culminates in a simulation where students respond to a disaster with role players as victims, according to a news release from the North Aurora Police Department.

The next class will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 8, and classes will continue at the same time on Tuesday evenings through Oct. 20, according to the release.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older, or 16 or older with parent permission.

Preference for admission into the course will be given to citizens who live or work in the village, the release stated.

After the conclusion of the course, attendees who successfully complete the course may apply to volunteer in the village’s CERT program, according to the release.

CERT volunteers assist first responders during disasters, other emergencies or planned events.

ELBURN – The Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District on Friday celebrated the retirement of Fire Marshal Al Isberg, whose career was entwined with the evolution of emergency medical and fire services.

“I was a fire and EMS geek back then,” Isberg said of his younger self.

The 64-year-old started his career with Elburn in December 1979 after stints elsewhere, including the St. Charles Fire Department, he said.

A retirement party is planned in his honor from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at Elburn Lions Community Park. The public is welcome.

in 1983, said his colleague is a wealth of knowledge and will leave “big shoes” for his replacement, Lisa Schopp, to fill.

Although Isberg retired as fire marshal, he said that role was just one of many he assumed in the career that he began at age 22 with Tri-City Ambulance Service, one of Al Isberg the first true EMS services to operate in the region.

Between greetings of congratulations at a luncheon Friday, Isberg recounted how the launch of his career coincided with the rise of emergency medical technicians. Emergency medicine as it is known today began taking shape some 40 years

ago with a federal law, and he was part of a federal pilot program to provide ambulances with trained personnel, he said.

Isberg later got his first taste of fire prevention in St. Charles, where he worked to establish a program that put smoke detectors in homes, he said.

He acquired 50 devices, he said, but less than half were installed because residents didn’t understand how they worked and were afraid they would cause illness.

“Smoke detectors were not anywhere,” Isberg said.

“They were huge and they weighed a ton.”

“I made a point of it,” he said.

Campbell said he has known Isberg since he began his career with the district, because Maple Park once contracted ambulance services from Elburn.

Be it a social or emergency setting, Campbell said, Isberg is “just great to be around.”

Isberg, who is a married father of three, said he is considering becoming a chaplain in retirement.

ELBURN DAYS READY TO GO

Festival to feature parade, music, carnival and more

ELBURN – Community groups, regional entertainers, marching bands and Ronald McDonald will be a few of the 75 entries in the annual parade to kick off festivities for the Elburn Days festival.

The festival is run by the Elburn Lions Club, and it runs from Friday through Sunday.

The parade starts at 6 p.m.

Friday on Route 47 in downtown Elburn, ending near Lions Park at 500 S. Filmore St. Events will be in and around the park, including a carnival, two entertainment stages, a beer garden, bingo, 4-H events and a mud volleyball tournament, among other festivities.

But, as the Elburn Lions Club’s website reminds visitors, “it starts with a parade.”

“It’s always been a highlight for the summer,” said Bob Thomas, the outgoing Lions Club president and the chairman of the festival. “Everybody enjoys watching that for sure.”

Thomas said the parade likely will last about 90 minutes. He said the grand marshals will be longtime Lions Club members Gordie and Linn Dierschow.

Some festival-related events will get started before Friday’s parade. A rummage and bake sale will start at 8 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church, 120 W. Shannon St., Elburn. And at 9 a.m., a book sale begins at the Town and Country Public Library, 320 E. North St., Elburn.

There also will be a rummage sale starting at 9 a.m. at the Community Congregational Church, 100 E. Shannon St., Elburn.

The festival will continue its recent tradition of having two stages. The main stage will feature prominent local bands,

On Sunday, there will be a mud volleyball tournament, starting at 11:30 a.m. In addition, a 4-H livestock auction starts at 1 p.m. And the Elburn Lions Club’s pork chop and chicken dinner starts at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Thomas said the festival typically serves as “the last big hurrah” before school starts.

This year, Elburn Days will be after the start of school, but Thomas said he expects many to flock to the festival for the same reasons they do each year.

“It’s a good time for people to get together and catch up with people we haven’t seen over the summer or maybe haven’t seen since the last Elburn Days,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun. There are different bands and rides. … It’s a good time to be out in the fresh air and enjoy yourself.”

“It does not follow that citizens may hold defendants liable in tort for a duty the defendants may have owed to the municipality,” U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer said in her opinion, which she issued Thursday. “Plaintiffs cite no authority, and the court has not found one, to support such a proposition.”

Defendants in the suit included the Indiana Municipal Power Agency; IMPA Service Corp., the consulting division

of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency hired by the city of Batavia to study the Prairie State Energy Campus project; Raj Rao, president and chief executive officer of IMPA Service Corp. and chairman of the Prairie State Generating Company Management Committee; Chicago-based consulting company Sargent and Lundy LLC, which was hired to study the quality and quantity of the coal at the Prairie State Energy Campus; and Skelly and Loy Inc., a Pennsylvania-based consulting firm hired to study the quality and quantity of the coal at the Prairie State Energy Campus.

Pallmeyer gave the plaintiff’s 21 days to file an amended complaint. Attorneys for the plaintiffs could not immediately be reached for com-

ment. The suit was originally filed by longtime Batavia businessman Joe Marconi, who died in December 2014.

The cities of Batavia, Geneva and Rochelle were named respondents in the suit. In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State.

Geneva and Rochelle are other members. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke on Tuesday declined to comment on the judge’s opinion.

Batavia aldermen in November 2014 voted to request Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan to investigate the Prairie State Energy Campus.

Schielke said the request still is pending.

SUGAR GROVE – Motorists now have a new way to get around the village.

A roundabout opened earlier this month at Dugan and Granart roads. The yearlong project relocated the Granart Road intersection with Dugan Road to an alignment opposite Bucktail Lane.

Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said the roundabout is designed to help traffic flow and improve safety. He has tried the roundabout.

“It seems like it’s worked well,” Michels said. “I’ve heard from a few people who have used it, and they seem to like it. It takes a little getting used to, but the benefit

is you don’t have to sit waiting for a stoplight to turn green.”

The roundabout is not fully open, however, work continues on the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Route 30 and Dugan Road intersection improvement project and the BNSF Granart railroad crossing improvement project. Michels said those projects should be done by November.

The roundabout project began in July 2014. Officials had hoped the project would have been done in June, but a wet spring prevented that from happening, Michels said.

Kaneland, Geneva among highest Chicago-area graduation rates

Kaneland High School in 2013 had the fourth highest graduation rate at 97.7 percent in the Chicago area, and Geneva High School had the sixth highest at 96.2 percent, according to the The Hechinger Report.

“Our hope is that no student ever gives up, but they instead work with us to help us understand the situation

and problem solve how to support them so that graduation can become a reality,” Maras wrote.

Geneva High School Principal Tom Rogers said the success of students at the school is a team effort amongst all of its stakeholders.

“We’re very fortunate here in Geneva to have students, teachers and parents who place a tremendous value on education,” Rogers said in a phone interview.

The Indian Prairie School District – which includes parts of Aurora, Bolingbrook, Naperville and Plainfield – had the highest Chicago-area graduation rate at 98.5 percent, according to data from the report.

Nonprofit pitches Settler’s Hill plan Batavia Sam’s Club holds GENEVA – The Chicago Area Track & Field Organizing Committee is ready to take on Settler’s Hill.

In a presentation to the Kane County Development Committee on Tuesday, the nonprofit’s secretary explained why the group would be suited to manage the proposed cross-country course at the former landfill.

“We’re hoping – I have my fingers crossed – three years from now we will be standing here, ready to host some meets,” Al Edgecombe said.

The Kane County Board last year hired Hunden Strategic Partners to conduct a feasibility study and economic impact analysis for the proposed improvements at Settler’s Hill. Two months ago, Hunden shared details of its analysis, which projected the cross-country course would operate with a deficit in its first decade.

Hunden’s presentation, indicating it specifically noted the numbers would change if a nonprofit came forward.

“We are that not-for-profit,” the Batavia resident said.

His organization – which, by name, is shortened to CATFOC – has been involved with the future use of Settler’s Hill since October 2011, when it suggested a championship cross-country course for the site, Edgecombe said.

“CATFOC is committed to this project because we believe it will be a tremendous asset to Kane County,” a slide in his presentation stated.

Because many athletic directors want to hire someone to organize cross-country meets, CATFOC’s operating plan includes assuming many responsibilities – such as timing and scoring, as well as course marking and setup – that the host school traditionally handles, Edgecombe said.

He said supporters of Settler’s Hill include the athletic directors at St. Charles East

and Wheaton North high schools, as well as coaches at Northwestern University and North Central College.

Cross-country meets could start as early as August 2018, Edgecombe said, noting the marketing would begin in 2016 for local events and in 2017 for regional and national events.

By taking over operations for hosting events, CATFOC would eliminate the need to pay permanent staff, which was included in Hunden’s report, Edgecombe said. He noted the organization projects that numbers would be in the black by year four.

County Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, said the actual numbers likely are in the middle of Hunden’s and CATFOC’s projections.

He said CATFOC’s option is worth considering.

“You’re doing it with heart,” Kenyon said.

No action was taken at Tuesday’s meeting, but there was consensus to move forward.

Agencies adjust with budget impasse

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com It’s not unusual for Michelle Meyer, executive director of Mutual Ground, to be concerned about the state budget.

This year’s budget impasse, however, has brought a level of uncertainty that, she said, “makes it incredibly hard to run an organization.”

The Aurora-based nonprofit is among the agencies affected by the state’s ongoing budget impasse.

According to a survey conducted by the United Way of Illinois in mid-July, 34 percent of human service agencies statewide have reduced the number of clients they serve, and nearly 20 percent are expected to deplete their cash reserves by the end of August.

Locally, the effect could be “disastrous,” said Paula Yensen, executive director of the United Way of Central Kane County.

“Cuts could very well impact a broad spectrum of agencies that we fund,” she said.

“There’s a lot of anxiety about what is going on the state level.”

Kane County is ramping up its annual fundraising campaign so it can allocate more dollars to the agencies it supports, Yensen said. The campaign kickoff is in September and has a goal of $425,000, she said.

Mutual Ground – which provides domestic violence and sexual assault services – planned to tap into its line of credit starting this next payroll, Meyer said Friday. She said the agency also is making plans about what could be cut if the budget isn’t approved by certain dates, such as Sept. 1 and Sept. 15.

“Our plan goes into November,” Meyer said. “We’re hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.”

Meyer said an aspect that often gets overlooked is Mutual Ground is an employer, and the budget situation affects those 47 people, as well as the clients they serve. In October, she said, the nonprofit likely will have to start discussions about administrative staff salaries.

She said it would help to know how much in cuts to expect from the state.

“I can work with that,” she said.

12 GNC holds ribbon-cutting

Many employers in the Waubonsee Community College district rely on temporary workers to augment their workforce. In fact, with 17,000 openings this year, Waubonsee’s region is one of the state’s largest in terms of temporary workers.

Training temporary workers often poses a challenge for companies because, by the very nature of the labor need, they have pressing production demands. Still, employers do want to keep their workers safe, reduce worker’s compensation claims and limit their risk of citations or fines.

Recognizing this growing segment of the workforce and its unique training needs, the

Waubonsee Workforce Development division applied for and received grant funding through the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The money has been used to provide free training to staffing agencies and their partnering employers to ensure temporary workers receive vital information about safety in the workplace, including such topics as how to properly work around machines, chemicals and forklifts.

As a result of this funding opportunity, more than 400 temporary workers have received four-hour basic safety training in either English or Spanish.

customized for a particular company’s needs and situation, so too can the training’s time and place. For example, Workforce Development conducted some of the safety training for temporary workers before or after their shift, or for alternating groups of workers, so that production was not negatively affected.

With those companies, we often delivered the training on-site, while other companies preferred to train at one of Waubonsee’s campuses.

Today is the first day of classes at many area schools, and motorists should proceed with extra caution around school buildings and neighborhood streets, a St. Charles news release states.

The St. Charles and Geneva police departments in separate news releases announced that police officers will be visible in school zones and their adjacent neighborhoods this week to ensure safety and compliance, especially during the morning rush hour.

“We know this time of year can be hectic,” St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said in the St. Charles release.

“But it only takes a few min-

utes to wait for a school bus or stop for a crossing guard.”

Police will watch for violations that include texting while driving, talking on a cellphone while driving, speeding, and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk,

according to the Geneva release.

As of Jan. 1, 2014, Illinois law bans the use of all handheld devices while driving.

Only hands-free technology, such as speakerphones, Bluetooths and headsets, are per-

mitted, the St. Charles release states.

Motorists also must stop in either lane of a two-lane road before meeting or overtaking a school bus loading or unloading passengers, according to the St. Charles release.

Right, left poison Common Core with inflammatory rhetoric THE WASHINGTON POST The ideologues have so disfigured Common Core that supporters of the educational reform now dare not speak its name.

“The term ‘Common Core’ is so darned poisonous, I don’t even know what it means,” Jeb Bush said in response to a question at the Iowa State Fair on Friday.

The former Florida governor then described what he does favor: “I’m for higher standards, state-created, locally implemented, where the federal government has no role in the creation of standards, content or curriculum.”

In other words, he’s for Common Core.

Most of the governors and ex-governors he’s competing against in the Republican presidential race have turned fully, not just rhetorically, against it.

Some who once stoutly supported the standards, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, have buckled under pressure from the right.

The pressure is built on bogus premises. Common

Core is not a federal takeover of education. States developed the standards, accepted them voluntarily and implement them with local flexibility.

The federal government merely encouraged states to adopt them, as it should have.

The standards also aren’t some conspiracy to force children to learn about climate change and evolution; they cover basics in language arts and math.

Even so, Republicans in various states are trying to repeal them, in some cases successfully, or to at least defund implementation.

Liberal opposition to Common Core, however, is proving at least as harmful.

Teachers unions have resisted the accountability that consistent and meaningful testing might bring, and they have used their own form of Common Core sabotage: Along with misguided anti-test activists, they have encouraged parents to refuse to let their children take exams meant to assess how well students are meeting Common Core expectations.

They have succeeded in undermining educational standards in New York: Parents pulled an astonishing 20 percent of students from grades 3 through 8 out of the tests last school year, upsetting efforts to track student progress.

Those worried about dis-

advantaged students should be particularly upset. Until the advent of testing, school districts were able to hide their failure to educate poor and minority students and those with learning challenges.

Sabotaging standards will allow a return to that era of abdication.

The left-right movement of activists, ideologues and unions that is “poisoning” the Common Core brand is willing to sacrifice transparency and accountability for the sake of ideology, job security or some combination.

Credit to Bush, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other leaders who are fighting the poison.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Cougars prepare for final playoff push

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With baseball being the longest season of the four major sports, off days can often be crucial.

But as this past Monday approached, the Kane County Cougars tried to get as much rest as possible.

Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Cedar Rapids marked the first of 21 games in 21 days to finish the regular season.

The Cougars (73-45 overall, 37-13 second half) have to like where they are at, having a five-game lead over the Peoria Chiefs in the Midwest League Western Division, with the first-half division winners, the Quad Cities River Bandits, six back.

No matter how you’re involved with a professional sports organization, the job becomes just a little bit easier when the team is playing well.

“It’s so much easier coming to the ballpark every day when you’re in the middle of a playoff race,” Cougars pitcher Jared Miller said.

“It’s the reason I play the game and I’m sure the reason most of us play the game. You ultimately want to win championships and make your way to the big leagues.”

The Cougars still will play six games, all on the road, against Quad Cities, and will host Peoria in their final series of the season at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Sure, it would be nice to have clinched a playoff spot by that point, as the first place team of the division in each half does so, but the Cougars are trying to stay much more levelheaded than that.

“This is our season right here,” center fielder Colin Bray said. “We’re in a good spot right now, but we have to keep grinding it out and try to win as many games as possible here down the stretch.

Every guy has to do their job to stay focused and not get too far ahead of ourselves.”

“We’re not looking at the whole idea of clinching a playoff spot,” starting pitcher Chris Oliver said. “I think at this point, we are playing

I think the guys know we have a pretty good team here, being in first place and all, but we’re making sure to take all of these games one at a time.”

Oliver, who was acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks in July, from the Philadelphia Phillies, said he has noticed something different about this ballclub.

The Cougars have players on their roster from several different countries, including 21-year-old starting pitcher Wei-Chieh Huang from Taitung, Taiwan.

“The team chemistry is the thing I’ve noticed most since coming over here,” Oliver said. “There’s no language barrier. Everybody talks to everybody and there’s really no segregation or anything.

You don’t get that in every clubhouse.”

This was quite evident when both Miller and Huang sat in the press box for last Friday night’s home game.

(Side note: The Cougars’ next two scheduled pitchers chart that day’s starter’s pitches.).

But Miller was keen on having a conversation, in between the innings he charted pitches, of course, with

Huang, who is accompanied by translator, Steve Lin. But regardless of his challenges with a Taiwanese translation app on his phone, it’s just something you don’t see every day. The two could have had conversations, through the translator, and gone on with the charting pitches.

NIU finds offensive line leadership in Ness, Conlon

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Death, taxes and Andrew Ness and Aidan Conlon starting for the Northern Illinois offensive line.

The two seniors bring stability to the Huskies up front, having started every game since their freshman year – giving them 84 starts between the two.

“Obviously, Ness and Conlon are the two leaders – they started as much or more games than anybody in the country, so that gives you comfort,” Northern Illinois offensive line coach Joe Tripodi said.

While Ness (6-foot-3, 298-pound center) and Conlon (6-3, 301-pound left guard)

both return, the Huskies are tasked with replacing three starters from last season’s team.

During training camp, four of the five spots on the first-string have remained relatively the same. Junior Levon Myers (6-5, 299) has spent most of the time at left tackle and junior Josh Ruka (6-5, 305) has lined up at right guard – to go along with Ness and Conlon.

Ruka actually started at right guard for the Huskies’ game against Marshall in the Boca Raton Bowl.

“They’re a tight-knit group and they work hard and push each other – very competitive,” Tripodi said. “I think we’ve had a lot of guys step up.”

Ness, who was first team

All-Mid-American Conference last season, has liked what he’s seen from the entire group of offensive linemen so far in camp. During the summer, Ness was named to the Rimington Trophy, Lombardi Trophy and the Outland Trophy watch lists – not that it mattered much to the seasoned center.

“It’s kind of cool but my dad’s all over it,” Ness laughed. “He called me every time I got on one. It doesn’t mean anything right now because we haven’t won a game.

I’m more worried about winning games and if an award comes later on, that’s great.”

Tripodi said there’s a competition for the right tackle spot between junior Lincoln Howard (6-5, 301) and redshirt freshman Max Scharp-

ing (6-6, 310).

However, he said that hopefully the Huskies will end up with a rotation of around eight players.

“As an O-line, if you only have five – you have to have six, seven and eight,” Tripodi said. “Coach (Rod) Carey and I love to rotate guys. That’s what we’re building to.”

Along with the older guys like Ness and Conlon, the Huskies have several redshirt freshmen who have seen valuable reps during training camp – including Scharping, Dale Brown (6-3, 298), Luke Shively (6-2, 289) and Shane Evans (6-4, 296).

“The big thing with young guys when they try to get into the rotation is they have to know the playbook,” Ness said. “They have to know the

calls. They have to be confident in everything they do.

Just knowing playbook is the big thing because you can’t trust a guy who doesn’t know the playbook.”

While some of the freshmen are certainly knocking on the door of being apart of the rotation, Tripodi said there are things he looks for that earn trust to put the younger player into a game situation.

“You look at if you’re going to be in the right spot.” he said. “Two, you look for toughness and accountability. I think the offensive line is the most unique position in sports because it takes one guy – you have five guys, so it takes one guy to mess up a great play.”

Even with the 37-13 second-half record, the lead isn’t insurmountable for the teams chasing Kane County.

“It’s crazy to think about,” first baseman Marty Herum said. “We’ve had a great push and have been playing so well, but then you look and see teams within reach. That’s the thing, though. Every team in this league is good so you really have to come ready to play each and every day.”

“It kind of reminds me of the SEC (Southeastern Conference),” said Oliver, who played his collegiate baseball at Arkansas. “Everything comes down to the wire and is tight in the standings. I don’t think anyone around here is

worried about losing the lead because we are playing real well right now.”

However, with 12 of the 21 games being played away from home, the Cougars will certainly be challenged down the stretch.

First-year manager Mark Grudzielanek may not have experience coaching a team fighting for a playoff spot, but he has plenty of useful experience from his 15 years in the big leagues.

Don’t forget Grudzielanek had the best hitting season of his career, with a .314 average in 2003 with the Cubs. I think the Cubs made a run into the playoffs that year before some sort of controversial event took place.

All of that is in the past now, and as long as the Cougars don’t get too far ahead of themselves and maintain that levelheaded mindset, they like their chances to get into the postseason and repeat as Midwest League champions.

Can the Cubs overcome Lester throwing ‘yip’ in playoffs?

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Cubs lefthander Jon Lester promised he would keep working on it, and there he was again before batting practice Tuesday, standing on the mound and throwing to crouching coach Mike Borzello at first base.

He made throw after perfect throw to Borzello as pitching coach Chris Bosio watched, suggesting the question: Why can’t he do that in a game?

And this one: What are Lester and the Cubs going to do about it if he can’t prove he can effectively throw to a base by the time they need him for a playoff opener?

“They’ve got a big problem to figure out,” said a longtime scout after seeing the Milwaukee Brewers run on Lester at will Thursday during a start that included his first pickoff throw in four months – a wide throw that sailed past first baseman An-

thony Rizzo for an error.

Suddenly, a high-profile case of the yips for the highest-profile Cubs pitcher has reared its head again after four months of quieting down behind the work of personal catcher David Ross and the recent pitching dominance of Lester.

Lester vowed to improve and execute a throw in a game. Manager Joe Maddon has said repeatedly he’s more concerned that Lester maintain the kind of focus on pitching that has led to a 1.92 ERA since the start of July.

He gets his next chance Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers – a team that ranks fifth in the American League in steals, with two players in the AL’s top seven.

Lester, the Cubs’ $155 million free agent, has pitched like an ace much of the season and limited scoring damage even as teams have taken advantage on the bases.

But all three of his pickoff throws this season – his first throws in two years – have

been off target, including two that went for errors. And he has allowed a major-league high 35 steals.

With Thursday’s video reminder, teams figure to test him and Ross more frequently, at least for a while.

Maddon and general manager Jed Hoyer said they put a lot of faith in Ross’s running-game management.

“Jon does a number of different things well,” Bosio said of the veteran adept at varying times and getting the ball to Ross quickly. “But this is one of the things that he knows he needs to work on and we know he needs to work on it.

“It’s a work in progress.”

The biggest potential for big damage could come in playoff games, where games tend to be tighter and every 90 feet significant.

Pitching for the Athletic in the American League wildcard game last year, Lester allowed three of the Royals’ six steals in a game the Royals eventually won.

“It was wet and cool this spring which puts a lot of stress on the plant,” Boyce said. “So, the roots didn’t get as deep as usual on the greens.

We’ve got a couple dry spots that need moisture.”

While the busy season is coming to a close, Schmitz considers June 15 to Aug. 15 the peak period for loopers at Phillips Park, a golf course superintendent has a lot of work to do to prep the course for next season. Any trouble areas will get attention with over seeding or sand.

“After Labor day, ... we consider that application season,” Schmitz said. “We start the aeration process. We get ready to put the greens to bed for the year. We start filling holes with sand and ready for shorter days and colder nights.”

Cart path restrictions provide Todd Schmitz with instant feedback.

The Phillips Park Golf Course Superintendent prefers to give golfers the freedom to drive all over the Aurora club.

Even though Schmitz has had “one or two” cart-path-only days this summer, monthly maintenance on the greens has kept them rolling pure and in a healthy position as he prepares for fall and winter.

As the State Climatologist Office for the State of Illinois has listed May through July as the wettest such period since records started in 1895, technological advancements in golf course maintenance have allowed players more

access to courses than ever before.

Illinois is 7.88 inches above the 20th Century average, yet the sand based greens at Phillips Park drain well. If there’s no rain falling, golf should be played.

“We’ve only had to restrict play to cart path only once or twice this summer,” Schmitz said. “I try to get that number to zero. I try to let players run in the rough and on the fairway as much as possible.”

Moisture management is done through a minimally invasive process. Whereas six-inch plugs used to be removed from the greens for aeration, when Schmitz vents the greens he uses a machine that makes a slicing motion.

It rotates a series of knife-like devices and lets a greens’ root system grow healthily.

Trip to Indy make or break for some BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush LAKE FOREST – After breaking camp Sunday in Bourbonnais and taking the day off Monday, the Bears had their first training camp practice of the year at Halas Hall on Tuesday. But for most of the coaches and players, their minds were elsewhere.

Immediately after practice, the team boarded buses to head to the airport and fly to Indianapolis for what could prove to be the most important week of the preseason for a number of players on the roster bubble.

The Bears will hold full squad practices against the Colts today and Thursday at the Colts’ practice facility before facing Indianapolis there in the second exhibition game of the year Saturday night.

Coach John Fox acknowledged after Tuesday’s practice that working against another club does give him a better idea of what he’s got and who his guys are.

“I think at this point they get kind of tired of beating on each other,” Fox said.

“We’ve been doing it all offseason as well as at training camp. It’s been my experience that guys like it. We did it a year ago in Denver and it’s something that I think it kind of has grown more and more as we move forward.”

Kyle Long said from a player’s perspective he thinks there’s a lot to be learned from this week, too.

“It’ll be really nice to go down to Indianapolis to echo some of the things that coach Fox was just talking about,” Long said. “They’re a playoff team, they have the model for what it is to be successful in this league.

“It’ll be a good idea to see how they practice and how they go about their business and also get an opportunity to see some other guys in a practice setting, you know we get to practice against them twice, get to play against them Saturday, so

As much as coaches want to see their players go full speed against top competition and the players want to prove themselves against the best, there is a danger

in these joint practices as witnessed by the brawl that broke out last week between Washington and Houston.

Fox said he and Colts’ coach Chuck Pagano are aware of the dangers and think they have things under control.

“One of the things you learn through experience is we’re only going two days instead of three days,” Fox said.

“That third day things get a little chippy, so I think part of the planning is looking at that third day. So we’ll work

like we did last week prior to Miami the day before the game’s scheduled and we’ll practice with our own team at Lucas Oil on Friday.”

Although there obviously is no benefit to teams brawling amongst themselves or with other clubs in practice, it is invaluable to see guys going full speed against comparable competition.

Especially for a new coaching staff and front office.

Coaches can push players as hard as they want, but they’re not going to consistently attack teammates in practice the way they will other teams.

You also can hope your players go all out in exhibitions, but let’s be honest, when you tell a guy he’s getting 15 to 20 plays and then watching with a baseball cap on for the bulk of the evening, how likely are they to actually get to top end?

Forget contending or playoffs, for the Bears to be merely competitive, players such as Marquess Wilson, Jordan Mills, Will Montgomery, Jacquizz Rodgers and at least one backup tight end on offense, and Jarvis Jenkins, Ego Ferguson, Sam Acho, Christian Jones, Shea McClellin, Adrian Amos and others on defense have to earn starting jobs or at least significant playing time.

The next two days in Indianapolis and the practice tapes they will compile probably are going to be the best opportunity of the preseason for Fox and company to determine what they’re made of, and for those young men and others to secure a job in the NFL.

Mosquitoes are the culprits in spreading West Nile virus Dear Doctor K: I’ve been hearing about West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. How do these illnesses spread? What can I do to protect myself?

Dear Reader: West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) are both viral diseases spread by mosquitoes. Infections with these viruses can be dangerous.

In some infectious diseases, as with these, the disease-causing microbe lives in an insect. When that insect bites a person, the microbe is transferred from the insect to the person. Often these microbes don’t cause any illness in the insect – just in us.

West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999. It has now spread through most of the continental United States, and the number of infections has increased dramatically.

In 2012, the number of reported cases jumped to 5,674, with 286 deaths. In the U.S., West Nile virus occurs primarily in the late summer or early fall.

Most infected people have no symptoms. Of those who do, most develop what is called West Nile fever. Symptoms include fever, headache and fatigue. Occasionally a person might have a skin

West Nile fever may last a few days or several weeks.

In a small number of severe cases, West Nile virus can cause encephalitis (a severe inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain). Some of these cases are fatal.

So, the good news about West Nile virus is that most people who become infected with it don’t get sick. The bad news is that some get very sick. We don’t understand what makes some people more vulnerable to the virus.

As with West Nile virus, many people infected with EEE have no apparent illness. In those who do become ill, symptoms range from a mild, flu-like illness to inflammation of the brain, coma and death. EEE virus is more serious than West Nile virus: About 35 percent of people infected with EEE die. Anyone who develops symptoms should be treated in a

hospital.

The best way to protect yourself against both West Nile virus and EEE is to avoid mosquito bites. Use an insect repellent with up to 30 percent DEET. Another repellent, permethrin, should not be used on the skin, just on clothing or mosquito netting.

Since insect repellents are not perfect, you should also try to avoid being exposed to mosquitoes as much as possible.

Mosquitoes are most abundant between dusk and dawn, so try to be indoors at those times. If you are going to be outside, wear lightweight, long-sleeved tops and long pants sprayed with repellent. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Make it a habit to dump out buckets or kiddie pools at the end of each day.

Why do people become anorexic?

Dr. Wallace: My cousin is a really beautiful and very intelligent young lady with a super sense of humor. She has everything going for her, but she has become a victim of anorexia nervosa (self-starvation). It is extremely puzzling to me and I cannot understand why any young person would resort to such a drastic eating habit. She is now undergoing treatment in a psychiatric hospital and I’m not sure she will be starting school with us in the fall.

Can you tell me why she would become anorexic? – Nameless, Portland, Oregon Dear Nameless: About one of every 200 North American teens, from every religion, race and ethnic group, suffers from anorexia nervosa.

Ninety percent of them are female. There are two main factors that drive teens to become anorexic: The first is the overpowering desire to emulate slender young stars. Athletes, dancers and cheerleaders are often coached to increase performance skills and make weight categories.

Parental pressure is the second big factor.

Sometimes parents who are overprotective and controlling, and have closed communication and unrealistically high expectations, unwittingly drive their daughter to “succeed” in being slim, which can be fatal.

Dr. Wallace: You told a 16-year-old boy to see a family doctor before he started investigating the idea of becoming a vegetarian. I disagree, and I think you should have told him to seek advice from a nutrition specialist since not all family doctors are well versed in nutrition. – Carla, Reno, Nevada Dear Carla: From my mail responses, I noticed

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace that most people interested in becoming vegetarians do not consider the family doctor well versed in nutrition and would prefer the advice of a nutritionist.

This makes me a believer! From now on I’m going to suggest that teens interested in vegetarianism contact a nutritionist first to get information on the eating pattern, and then see their family doctor.

Dr. Wallace: The first thing I do when I come home from school is find my dog. When I do, she comes running to me wagging her tail. I always greet her and tell her she is a “good dog” and that I love her very much.

My grandpa lives with us and he always says I’m wasting my breath because Mitzi doesn’t understand what I’m saying. I think he is wrong and I still think she understands me.

Who is right? – Lynn, St. Louis, Missouri Dear Lynn: Mitzi doesn’t understand English, but she does understand YOU. Those who work with animals agree that dogs do understand human sounds – not the actual words, but how the words are spoken.

Loud, harsh words cause the dog to cower, but soft words encourage her to come closer and wag her tail.

According to the American Kennel Club, 99 percent of all pet owners admit they talk to their animals and 88 percent view their pet as a member of their family.
