New look for Geneva History Museum Redesigned museum features gallery opening

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva History Museum has a whole new look, with a bright teal main color and a revamped main gallery featuring a timeline of the city’s history, iPads to interact with displays and a theater.

A preview of the new gallery featuring “Geneva’s Story” includes the family tree of James and Charity Herrington when they settled Geneva in 1935. It includes artifacts from a 1992 archaeological dig at the site of their cabin along the Fox River.

The new gallery will be open for free to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 113 S. Third St., but after that, the fee will be $2, museum director Terry Emma said.

“We set the scene with the Indians, and when the Herringtons came and developed a community, created an establishment with a civilized government and with a courthouse,” Emma said.

The display includes a replica of their cabin by the river, but with an actual small rocking chair from their cabin. A family tree shows the Herringtons and their 10 children – including James’ and a child’s death soon after arriving – leaving Charity a widow with nine children to raise.

James Clayton Herrington became the first mayor of the fledgling city and the cabin display has his top hat, with his signature inside from Chicago’s Palmer House, Emma said.

The rest of the displays follows a timeline that includes the development of the city’s commerce, factories, its businesses and farming – from hat making to flour to selling shoes.

Genevans’ war service also is on the timeline, including a Civil War jacket.

Early cheerleading and a 1903 letterman jacket from Geneva High School also are featured.

The redone gallery is an $87,000 project over two years, Emma said. It began with a $30,000 donation from The Robinson Family Foundation if she could secure another $30,000 in matching gifts.

“I made phone calls to our membership, and they came through,” Emma wrote in an email. “I contacted the Fabyan Foundation for an additional $5,000 and the Geneva Lions Club for $1,000. We sent a fundraising letter out specific to this project and secured another $8,700 from more than 70 museum donors.”

But it does not stop there.

The second phase involves completing the recreation section of the gallery and installing a story booth for visitors to record their Geneva Story for the museum’s archives, programming and to share on social media, Emma said.

“Saturday will be a big donation push,” Emma said. “If you give us $100 on that day, your name goes on the wall, and you get a tote bag and museum membership for a year.”

Kaneland continues search for interim superintendent

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland School District 302 Board soon could have an interim superintendent in place as board members begin the task to find a permanent replacement for Jeff Schuler, who is leaving the district to become the superintendent at Whea-

ton Warrenville District 200.

The Kaneland board met Monday night at the district office, days after it was announced in a news release that the district “is seeking an interim superintendent to temporarily fill the vacancy and will begin the search for a permanent replacement in the fall.”

Schuler will leave for his

new position on Sept. 2.

On Monday, the board met briefly in a special meeting before going into executive session. Board members indicated they would not anticipate any action at the meeting.

Board member Tony Valente asked whether that meant they were “not going to act in open session to hire an interim.” Teresa Witt, the board’s

vice president, said the board did not intend to take any action on Monday night.

The board does have its next scheduled meeting set for next week, Aug. 25, at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

Board President Cheryl Krauspe indicated in last week’s release “the selection of a superintendent for the

Kaneland district is the most significant decision that our school board can make.”

“In order to hire the best fit for our district, the process should be very careful, thoughtful and thorough hard work, with input from all segments of the educational community and its stakeholders,” Krauspe said, according to the release.

Anderson: Elburn Days Bar owners plead guilty; both ‘a great, great weekend’ dispute liquor license violations ELBURN – Calling the festival a “full community event,” Village President Dave Anderson praised the recently completed Elburn Days weekend, as well as the work of the Elburn Lions Club and volunteers to make it happen.

“It was a great, great weekend for the community,” Anderson said Monday at the Elburn Village Board meeting.

But there was some disappointment that a different community event – National Night Out – didn’t take place this year, after a healthy turnout last year. National Night Out was observed Aug. 5, and there were several celebrations in Kane County, including the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Campton Hills police.

There was $500 budgeted for the event in Elburn, but Police Chief Steve Smith said that pays for only a portion of the event and fundraising would have been needed to cover the rest of the cost. He said his department was unable to work to raise that amount.

Trustee Pat Schuberg said she wished officials would have known in advance that there was such an issue. Trustee Jeff Walter said he “heard from a lot of people who were disappointed. … People really missed it.”

Also, in a committee of the whole meeting that followed

the Village Board meeting, board members discussed an update to the subdivision control ordinance, which John Nevenhoven, the superintendent of public works, and Tom Brennan, the village’s building commissioner, described as the cleaning up of a 20-year-old ordinance.

Walter had some concerns about language that defined a developer. He said he was uncomfortable with the definition, and he thought perhaps there were some in the Blackberry Creek subdivision who “can say, ‘Yep, we’re doing one of those things. … We are the developer.’ ” Trustee Ethan Hastert said he didn’t think defining a developer in the ordinance would change anything in Blackberry Creek. Trustee Ken Anderson, who works for Kane County, said he could share the county ordinance with Elburn village staff to see whether there would be anything that could be addressed.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The owners of two downtown St. Charles businesses on Monday pleaded guilty to liquor license violations, but they also raised objections.

Rich Simpson Sr., owner of the Alibi Bar and Grill, and Peter Milligan, owner of The Filling Station Pub & Grill, entered their pleas and addressed the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission at its Monday meeting.

The Filling Station, 300 W. Main St., St. Charles, is accused of allowing alcohol purchased there to be consumed outside its premises, and failing to have someone posted during the required hours at each entrance. The violations occurred at about 2:01 a.m. July 10, according to a St. Charles police report.

Alibi Bar and Grill, 12 N. Third St., St. Charles, is ac-

cused of allowing alcohol purchased there to be consumed outside its premises, and allowing a patron to exit the business while in possession of alcohol. The violations occurred at about 1:50 a.m. June 1, according to a St. Charles police report.

After Simpson Sr. gave his plea, he proceeded to explain why he was not guilty.

Simpson Sr. said he was in the bar at the time of the incident, but he could not prove or disprove that the violations actually happened.

He told commission members he tried to make contact with the 21-year-old woman that was cited outside the Alibi on June 1 for open alcohol in a public place, but he discovered she no longer lives at her listed address in the police report. He also denies that he opened a rear door at the Alibi during the incident, reached out and grabbed a drink from an outside ledge and attempt-

ed to pull it into the bar before he was stopped by police.

Milligan did not dispute the July 10 incident happened outside his business, but he said the people that were found with alcohol from his business concealed drinks as they were leaving.

Milligan made a comparison to shoplifting statistics, indicating not all people that sneak away with something are caught.

Commission members said Milligan made the shoplifting comparison before when he was before them for a violation in 2013. They said the police report indicates the people were from out of town, were not aware of the local laws and therefore did not make any attempt to conceal the alcohol.

Any announcement of penalties for the establishments would be issued within 7 to 10 days, Rogina said after the meeting adjourned.

‘WE CELEBRATE IT’ Grace McWayne Elementary students enjoy festive 1st day of school

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As Katy Perry’s “Roar” played on speakers set up nearby, teachers emerged Monday morning from Grace McWayne Elementary School in Batavia, holding up signs to help students and their parents find the right place to line up.

The music was courtesy of the school’s principal, Jeff Modaff, who described himself as a “retired” disc jockey.

Parents brought cameras, and their children posed with their friends and teachers. Some kids climbed on playground equipment. And more than one parent said the first day of the school year at Grace McWayne feels like a party.

Modaff, who said he was excited to be starting his third year as the school’s principal, said the first day of school should be treated as a special occasion.

“We want everyone to know this is a very important and significant day in their life,” he said. “We celebrate it.”

Batavia School District 101 welcomed students back to school Monday. Other local school districts – Kaneland District 302, St. Charles District 303 and Geneva District 304 – will get started Wednesday.

Lisa Hichens, District 101’s superintendent, said the school board wanted to end the first semester before winter break, and that can be achieved by starting two days earlier than other local districts and cutting down on institute days.

Also, she said, the school year should end before Memorial Day, unless the district is forced to close school on some days because of weather conditions.

A second-grade teacher, Kelly Woodard, was holding some flowers given to her by Jennifer Consigny, a parent who said she buys flowers for all of her children’s teachers, calling it “our little family tradition.”

“We always give flowers to teachers,” Consigny said, adding that she was a teacher and knows that the gesture would be appreciated. Woodard said it was nice, adding “I love my flowers.”

“He just went to school,” she said.

Meredith Brown said she was ready for the first day of school and that she was happy to find out her teacher assignment, adding, “she’s good.” But she added that she was a little sad to see the summer vacation end.

“It flew by so fast,” Meredith Brown said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – U.S. Army Specialist Joshua Kerber will be the first recipient of the Associated Firefighters of Illinois Geneva Local 4287 gift of a car.

Kerber, 26, of West Chicago, who lost his left arm in Afghanistan in 2009, told the Geneva City Council some of his story Monday.

“I joined the Army in 2008,” Kerber said. “I looked around at my job prospects and realized that I needed an education and I couldn’t afford one. And the Army had always been something on the back burner. I had family that served; it seemed like a good thing.”

Kerber lost his arm during a security operation “a night like any other night” when his convoy was ambushed.

He was the gunner on the lead vehicle that was hit by rocket propelled grenades.

“I went down. I stood up and began to attempt to return fire,” Kerber said. “The second [hit] – there was no getting back up after that one.

I have shrapnel throughout my body. This [right] arm is hurt, too, but luckily there’s no nerve damage .... The left arm – don’t feel bad for it, it was useless anyway.”

“The Warrior Program has been a statewide program for about six years [and] given seven cars away to wounded Illinois veterans throughout the state,” said Johnson, who is vice president of the local.

“We started this program in June and said, ‘We’re not going to sell a couple shirts, we are going to sell $30,000 worth of shirts. We are going

to find someone that is in need and give them a vehicle,’ ” Johnson said.

They sell T-shirts in partnership with the Kane County Cougars and through Firehouse Pizza and Grill, and some events at Old Towne Pub, both Geneva, Johnson said.

They have sold about 2,500 shirts at $20 each, he said, with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward buying the vehicle.

Although the Geneva local has taken the lead in the program, Johnson said other fire department locals – West Chicago Local 3970, Batavia Local 3436, Elburn Local 4749 and St. Charles Local 3322 – are working with them, as well.

“Josh picked out a brand new 2014 red Ford F-150 as the vehicle he needs and Fox Valley Ford [in North Aurora] gave us a tremendous deal on it and we’re going to go buy it this week with him,” Johnson said.

On Friday at Fifth Third Ball Park, Kerber will throw out the first pitch for the Cougars vs. Clinton Lumber Kings.

After the game, the vehicle will be presented to Kerber down on the field before the fireworks, Johnson said. Mayors and elected officials of the local communities, as well as state senators and representatives and Gov. Pat Quinn.

“We’re hoping he makes it,” Johnson said.

Batavia aldermen reject lifting ban on video gambling BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen on Monday rejected lifting the city’s ban on video gambling.

Only six of the 14 aldermen voted to lift the ban.

Voting “yes” were 1st Ward Aldermen Garran Sparks and Michael O’Brien, 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff, 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac, 6th Ward Alderman Lisa Clark and 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown.

Officials from the Batavia VFW had asked Batavia aldermen to reconsider the city’s ban on video gambling.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he couldn’t support lifting the ban because the proper controls to monitor video gambling are not yet in place.

“I think we are running this thing by a wing and a prayer,” Schielke said.

CAROLE A. MICHELS Born: June 29, 1941; in Aurora, IL Died: Aug. 16, 2014; in Elburn, IL Carole A. Michels, age 73, of rural Elburn, passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 16, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving husband and children and her dear sister Judy.

She has been at her home and/or lake home under family, Hospice and Home Helpers care since April 11, 2014. Carole was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2004 and has been resigned to her condition with an enduring faith in God that was one of her characteristics throughout her life. Carole gave unconditional love and effort to everyone that she met and to everything that she did.

Carole attended East Aurora Public Schools, namely Oak Park Elementary School, East Aurora Junior High School, and graduated mid-term in the first graduating class from the “new” East Aurora High School in 1959.

In high school she developed lifelong friendships with several special friends. Upon graduation from high school, Carole began her career as a secretary with IBM in Aurora and developed the skills that served her well throughout her life.

She was with her friends when she met her future husband Jim at the A&W Root Beer Stand at Aurora and started a romance that lasted almost 55 years.

They dated while Jim attended Marquette University and were engaged on June 24, 1962, on Powers Lake, WI and they were married on December 1, 1962, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Aurora. After a brief honey moon, they returned to Oklahoma City where Jim was stationed as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) in the Division of Indian Health. It was while in Oklahoma City that their oldest child, Patrick “Sean” was born in October 1963. Soon afterward they were transferred to Henryetta, OK where Christopher “Todd” was born in January 1965.

Due to the reorganization of the USPHS, they moved to New Brighton, MN where they were blessed with their daughter “Denise” Marie who was born in August 1966. The family of five made another move to Norman, OK in 1968, where Jim attend-

her children and grandchildren who adored her.

She is survived by her husband Jim; two sons, Sean (Valerie) Michels of Sugar Grove, Todd(Jacqui) Michels of Chicago; and one daughter, Denise (Brian) Migliorini of Plano; three sisters, Jean (Don) White of Big Rock, Joan McCue of Aurora and Judy (Jim)Kreitz of Sugar Grove; and nine grandchildren: Abby, Nick, Maddy and Sophie Michels of Sugar Grove, Greycn, Alexa and Samantha Michels of Chicago, and Gina and Nico Migliorini of Plano; three sisters in law, Pat, Lil and Lois Michels and Anna Marie Avram and her brother in law Nello Avram; and 44 nieces and nephews.

She joins now her parents, and two grandsons, Geno and Ryan Migliorini. Also, her mother and father in law Marie and Ben Michels; her brothers in law, Bob, Art and Bern Michels, and Jim McCue Sr.; and five nieces and nephews.

Her visitation will be held at St. Gall Catholic Church, IL Rte. 47 and Shannon St., Elburn on Thursday, August 21, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a wake service to begin at 8 p.m., where family and friends are invited to view her remains in the church and to “Celebrate Carole’s Life” in the church hall.

Her funeral will be held at St. Gall Catholic Church, IL Rte. 47 and Shannon St., on Friday, August 22, 2014, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. and mass at 10:30 a.m.

Fr. Timothy Seigel will officiate and interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery, Hinckley.

A memorial has been established in her name to benefit St. Gall Catholic Church, CNS Hospice, the Elburn Lions Club, the Luxembourg American Cultural Society, and/or the Alzheimer’s Association. Kathleen J. Foley, age 45, of Amboy, died Friday, August 15, 2014, at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

She was born Nov. 6, 1968, in St Charles, IL the daughter of James E. and Jeanne (Stuart) Foley. She attended St Francis and St Vincent Schools in Freeport and graduated from the special education program at Dixon High School.

She is survived by her parents of Lena, one sister Deborah (Tim) Dorsey. She is also survived by her many friends at Kreider Services.

She was preceded in death by one brother Kevin Foley.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Dixon with the Rev. Antoni Kretowicz officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva, IL. Arrangements by the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon.

Carole enjoyed her new home and rejoining her family. She became active in St. Gall Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister among many other things. Carole concentrated on raising her three children and, along with her sisters, looking after her mother and dad and her widowed mother in law.

She resumed her secretarial skills as the secretary of the newly formed consulting engineering firm Engineering Enterprises, Inc. at Elburn in 1974. Carole then became active in the Elburn Business Council and in 1982, she became a realtor with Leuer Realty where she was a “top producer” for most of her 30 year career.

Carole was a member and president of the Greater Aurora Association of Realtors and a member of the Fox Valley Board of Realtors; she held several leadership positions with both boards. She was also a charter member of the Kane County Tourism Association and a member of the Kaneland Foundation and the Waubonsee Community College Foundation. Carole was a precinct committee person for Blackberry Twp., Kane Co. for many years. She was one of the seven founders of Kaneland Community Bank, now American Bank and Trust, Elburn. Carole was also the Corporate Secretary Emeritus of Engineering Enterprises, Inc., Sugar Grove, IL. Carole enjoyed life, especially entertaining family and friends by cooking and baking, she also enjoyed traveling with her family and friends, and vacationing at Powers Lake, WI. A loving wife and totally devoted mother and grandmother, her greatest joy was to care for her family. Her love was mirrored in the lives of

LOCAL BRIEF Stretch of Galena Boulevard to be closed AURORA – A stretch of Galena Boulevard on Aurora’s near east side will be closed Wednesday through Sept. 5, as part of the city’s combined sewer overflow control project, according to a news release.

The south lane of Galena Boulevard will be closed between Lincoln Avenue and Fourth Street as crews work to install a series of rain gardens.

The rain gardens are designed to divert rainwater and reduce the number of occasional sewage backups that can occur in homes and in the Fox River during heavy storms, the release stated.

As a part of the project, Fourth Street will be closed to through traffic between Downer Place and Galena Boulevard.

All access drives to businesses within in the work area will remain open.

Lions Club winds up a ‘fantastic’ Elburn Days

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The team names on Sunday said it all: they were ready to get dirty.

The sixth annual Elburn Days Mud Volleyball Tournament on Sunday had participants competing on such teams as Face Full of Mud, Dirty Mud Dogs, Mud Sweat and Tears, Down N Dirty and Mud Men. “It’s just a blast,” South Elgin resident and third-year participant Julie Frankowski said. “How often can you get all muddy ... and not be considered strange?”

The tournament was one of many activities available to those at Lions Park on Sunday as the three-day festival – the Elburn Lions Club’s biggest annual event – came to an end.

Event volunteer and club member Cindy Halsey had one word for this year’s Elburn Days: fantastic. The beer garden set a new record Friday, the beef stand was doing very well and even Mother Nature came through, she said, describing it as an “excellent weather weekend.”

Halsey said the key to the event’s success is teamwork.

“The whole event is a welloiled machine,” she said.

Participants of one event, however, came prepared to deal with rough patches.

Dylan Kuc of Aurora and Austin Pratt of Batavia, both 17, spent the day at the dirt track used to race remote controlled cars.

“It’s usually a lot of fun,” Kuc said, noting he has been racing for about four years.

Like the mud volleyball courts adjacent to it, the racecourse could be a dirty place to be, as wind and the cars themselves kicked up dirt, which wafted over bystanders in a cloud.

Taylor Buch of South Elgin was among those who hosed themselves down after the tournament’s first round. Her face still speckled with dirt, the Elgin Community College student said this was her first time playing mud volleyball.

Buch, who played with Top Flight Volleyball Club, said the mud could get deep, but her court wasn’t as bad compared to others.

“It was fun,” she said.

W. Chicago bus driver pleads guilty to DUI Charles and then began transporting elementary school children along her West Chicago route, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

While Beebe was dropping off children at a school, a staff member spoke with her and then reported to the principal that Beebe smelled like alcohol, the release stated.

The principal then notified the bus company, who told Beebe not to operate the bus, according to the release.

The West Chicago Police Department met her at her next stop, and after administering field sobriety tests, took her into custody.

Beebe will be credited for time served between Sept. 13 and 16, 2013, at the county jail, Darrah said.

WEST CHICAGO – A former school bus driver pleaded guilty Monday to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol while she was transporting children in West Chicago.

Judge George Bakalis sentenced Jill Beebe, 42, of the 600 block of Sunbury Road in South Elgin, to 20 days of county jail time and two years probation, said Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Beebe also was ordered to complete 50 hours of community service, and she must pay fines and court costs of $1,762.

Martinez of Monte Cristo Equestrian Center in Maple Park, was followed by Tiana Ng of Classical Baroque Horse in Huntley. Ng’s presentation included Andalusian, Baroque and Tennessee Walking horses, the riders clad in everything from gossamer gowns with fairy wings to traditional riding wear.

Each presentation included an explanation of the horses’ origins and introductions of the riders, all part of Saturday’s Festival of the Horse and Drum at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Democrat? Republican? There’s an app for that THE WASHINGTON POST If you’re a Republican, you might want to think twice before buying Lipton Iced Tea, and forget about Starbucks coffee.

If you’re a Democrat, put down that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, and throw away the cylinder of Quaker Oats in your pantry.

These are the sorts of conclusions that BuyPartisan – a new smartphone app that The Post’s In the Loop featured last week – encourages you to make.

After you scan the bar code on products with a phone camera, BuyPartisan access-

es campaign finance data and offers a breakdown of the manufacturer’s political giving – examining contributions from its board of directors, its chief executive, its employees and its associated political action committees.

The Quaker Oats Co., for example, scores an overall average of 78.5 percent Republican. Starbucks is 80.75 percent Democratic.

Matthew Colbert, founder of app developer Spend Consciously, told us that the idea is to “empower individuals so that they can make every day like Election Day in how they spend their money.”

Because if there is something the country needs, appar-

ently, it’s more decisions made based on blind partisan allegiance.

We don’t discount the app’s politics-nerd appeal: Colbert suggests that bar patrons might whip out their phones to see whose beer is more Republican or more Democratic. But Americans taking this concept seriously? That prospect is terrifying, even if it wouldn’t be coming from out of nowhere.

In June, the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press published a thorough study of the country’s increasing ideological sorting.

“In each party, the share with a highly negative view of the opposing party has

more than doubled since 1994,” the study found. “Most of these intense partisans believe the opposing party’s policies ‘are so misguided that they threaten the nation’s well-being.’ ” “ ‘Ideological silos’ are now common on both the left and right,” Pew’s report continued. “People with downthe-line ideological positions – especially conservatives – are more likely than others to say that most of their close friends share their political views. Liberals and conservatives disagree over where they want to live, the kind of people they want to live around and even whom they would welcome into their

families.”

BuyPartisan would take the nation’s ideological sorting to a new level. It’s not just that Americans refuse to marry, socialize and live near people who disagree with their partisan affiliation. If the app succeeds, it would be a sign that Democrats and Republicans aren’t even willing to do business with one another any longer.

We can think of a few things this kind of app could usefully do, like help consumers sort out companies with sketchy records on human rights.

But we hope BuyPartisan fails.

And why are horses considered such sacred animals that they cannot be raised for human consumption? They are in many other parts of the world. After all, we currently consume most every other kind of bird, beast and fish in the world. Why, we even eat chickens and their unborn young!

Perhaps it’s time the writer gets their ideas of what’s important in proper order.

Friendly foes tee off season

The shots were flying off the tees.

The putts looked pressure-packed.

High school golf season was officially on.

But, remember, this was only Day 1.

Even the coaches aren’t entirely sure what they have at this point in the season, the very beginning point, but the joy of getting the season started was plenty evident Monday at the McChesney Cup at Geneva Golf Club.

The annual event pairs one rival with another in a fun and friendly team competition. Batavia teams with Ge-

neva against the combo of St. Charles East and St. Charles North.

It’s an event the coaches and golfers enjoy equally. Not only does it allow them to get to know their local competition in a less heated environment, but it signals the start of the season.

In the dog days of August, what could be better than that?

“I like the fact it’s a team event and we can team up with Geneva, who tends to be our rival, the team just north of us that everyone always wants to beat,” Batavia coach Tim DeBruycker said. “When it comes head-to-head, we’ll want to beat them when it comes time.

But it’s just nice for the kids to realize it’s just another team, golfers just like us.

“I think when [former Geneva golf coach Bill Koehn] started this, it was a really nice idea. He’s a Geneva graduate, and I’m a Batavia graduate. We were both hearing too much about, ‘I hate this, or I hate that.’ That word should never be used in sports at all, so we just tried to show them they’re just like us, just another team. Bill always wanted to beat me, I always wanted to beat him. But when it came down to it, this is just a nice golf event to team up with our rivals.”

Plus, the relationship-building aspect of the event means that when these teams do collide further down the road, it will make that competition a bit more enjoyable.

“Knowing them later in the

year, further down in the season, you kind of get to know them more when you’re playing with them. You can talk to them, and it’s more relaxing, I think, because you kind of know what the person’s like,” Geneva senior Garrett Davis said.

The results weren’t the thing in the forefront of everyone’s mind Monday, however the event did have a winner.

The East/North combo defeated the Geneva/Batavia combo, 168½ to 119½, in a format that included a scramble, a bestball competition and an alternate-shot round.

Mainly, however, the day was about starting to figure out how good these teams can be.

Rakkar keeps rockin’ Right-hander Jasvir Rakkar entered Monday on a streak of six straight scoreless appearances since joining the Cougars on July 28 from Short-A Boise.

The run includes five hits, two walks and 11 strikeouts in 11 innings.

“He’s looked pretty good,” Cougars pitching coach David Rosario said. “Had a couple good outings at the end [of games], so he might be a big factor right now. I’m looking for somebody that can pitch late in the game and he looks like he wants to take over.”

Recent roster-move roulette has especially affected the Cougars’ bullpen, but Rakkar, a native Canadian of Punjabi Indian descent, has relied on a simple approach against familiar hitters.

“A lot of them are from last year, as well. Basically, they’ve been moving up, progressing,” Rakkar said. “But it’s a tough league to pitch. You just consistently have to pound the zone and hopefully things will work out OK.”

Cougars honor scribe The Cougars held a moment of silence for late former Burlington (Iowa) Hawk Eye sports reporter Susan Denk before Monday’s first pitch.

Denk, 39, suffered a heart attack early Monday while visiting her sister in Chicago. Cougars officials said she has been expected to be at Monday’s Cougars-Burlington Bees game.

Denk covered the Bees and University of Iowa football among other beats during her 15 years at the newspaper.

Hatczel in first year as Geneva’s boys coach after coaching girls team • GOLF Continued from page 18 “It’s a little bit different format, but a coach gets an idea of where the team’s going and who’s strong, who can come out and play,” St. Charles East coach John Stock said. “All the different formats affect that a little bit, but certainly the best ball and the head-to-head, you know what your player shot.”

That’s especially true for Eric Hatczel, in his first year coaching the Geneva boys after previously guiding the girls team. He’s taking over for Koehn, and he seems to be already getting a feel for his new team.

“This is the first match, so it’s too early to tell, to be honest,” Hatczel said. “We’ll see. I think there’s a good group of boys. We have a decent number on the team this year.

We’ll see this week, we kind of hit it hard and heavy from the beginning. Today, tomorrow, Wednesday and Saturday. So we’ll find out real quick.”

The bottom line? Golf season is here.

“I’m really happy, got a lot of friends on the team. We had a good feeling going into today, and we’re playing pretty well as of now. Can’t wait for the rest of the season,” St. Charles East senior Ronnie Griggs said. “Should be a lot of fun.”

GENEVA – Brian Loconsole celebrated several birthdays at Cougars games growing up, but circumstances beyond his control eventually affected his allegiance.

In college, shortly after his family moved from Carol Stream to Geneva, Loconsole worked as a bouncer and barback at Flagstone Pub & Grill, a few miles from the Cougars’ wellknown Geneva haunt, the Country House Restaurant.

If that was incidental, things reached a baseball parallel in June 2013, when the Los Angeles Angels selected Loconsole in the 20th round of the Brian Major League Base- Loconsole ball First-Year Player Draft.

A right-handed reliever enjoying the best stretch of his brief pro career, Loconsole is expected to pitch today as the Cougars continue their series against Burlington. He welcomed a few familiar faces in the stands Monday, as well, the Cougars’ 2-1 win in 10 innings notwithstanding.

“Any time you have a good crowd when they’re cheering for you at an opponent’s stadium, it’s pretty fun,” Loconsole said.

Loconsole did not play baseball at Glenbard North, getting cut three times but still helping the Panthers’ Class 8A state runner-up football team in his senior season of 2007.

Armed with perseverance and a fastball ranging from 90 to 94 mph, he made Western Illinois’ baseball team as a walk-on before encountering skepticism about his long-term future with the program. That led Loconsole to Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, where he settled several doubts by compiling a 3.06 ERA in 78 innings in 2009.

Returning to Western Illinois, Loconsole redshirted in 2010 but took on an increased workload in each ensuing season. His career culminated as a senior in 2013, as he finished with a 3-2 record and 2.86 ERA with a program-record nine saves in a team-high 22 appearances.

“Just never take no for an answer.

Never give up,” Loconsole said. “I was raised to be a hard-worker, and I’ve just never come off of that.”

Loconsole’s mother, Sue Garesche – who since has relocated to Palatine – estimates she has traveled

to 20 of her son’s games this season.

Not every visit coincided with Loconsole pitching, a risk indigenous to following a reliever.

“Oh, that’s fine,” Garesche said.

“Sometimes the stress level is lowered a lot when I know he’s not pitching.”

Loconsole lobbied Bees manager Bill Richardson and pitching coach Ethan Katz to pitch tonight rather than during Wednesday’s 1 p.m. matinee to allow more friends and family the chance to attend.

In 29 appearances over 61⅓ innings with the Bees through Monday, he was 5-4 with a 1.76 ERA and 46 strikeouts. Loconsole is confident his initial struggles at Rookie League Orem (Utah) in 2013 – including a 9.11 ERA in 26⅔ innings – are behind him.

He opened this season in extended spring training before joining the Bees near midseason.

“College, I was always a thrower. I was able to put it by people and whatnot,” Loconsole said. “As I found out last year, everybody’s seeing 90 at this level. So my biggest transition was in becoming a pitcher. … I had to stay within myself, not do too much and take criticism in the best way I can.”

Legacy land: A parenthetical phrase, (Yes, that Gretzky), appeared next to Bees left fielder Trevor Gretzky’s name on the lineups written behind home plate.

Yes, that Dunston – the former Cubs All-Star infielder and father of Cougars left fielder Shawon Dunston Jr. – attended the game with his family, sitting a few rows from the Cougars’ dugout on the first-base side.

The pinnacle of the night was easy: Shawon Dunston Jr. singled home Trey Martin with the winning run in the 10th. Father and son hugged and took a photo a few moments later.

The elder Dunston, the San Francisco Giants’ instant replay liaison, is in town as the Giants prepare to face the Cubs for a three-game series beginning today. He signed numerous autographs and posed for several pictures nearly every half-inning.

Dunston also watched his son throw out a runner at home plate to end the top of the first.

Gretzky, a Cougar for part of 2013, was traded to the Angels organization in spring training for Matt Scioscia, the son of Angels manager Mike.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE AURORA – Assistant coach Joseph Currie has been promoted to replace Ryan Paradise as Marmion’s boys basketball coach, the school announced Saturday.

“The administration of the Academy has taken a close look at what is best for the players, the program, and the school community,” Anthony Tinerella, Marmion head of school and principal, said in a news release. “Coach Currie has served as an assistant football coach on the varsity level and head coach of our lower level basketball and football teams for 20 years. He brings with him a passion for sports and helping athletes achieve at the highest level.”

Currie is a 1982 Marmion graduate and has served as a member of the Cadets coaching staff since 1994. Currie brings with him decades of basketball experience ranging from coaching at the collegiate and various high school levels to coaching and organizing camps at the youth level.

“Marmion has always been in my blood,” Currie said in the news release. “Since the mid-’70s when I served as the football team manager. I would ride my bike from St. Rita to practice every day to be part of the team.”

“I am honored, privileged and humbled to have this opportunity to represent Marmion. Marmion is a great place with great kids. I want to build the program to win regional and sectional titles, with our ultimate goal of getting the Cadets to the state tournament.”

D u r i n g Currie’s three years as an assistant coach at Waubonsee Community College, WauJoseph Currie bonsee was a two-time national tournament qualifier. At Marmion, Currie’s teams have won or tied for conference titles at each level. As the freshman football coach, Currie has had two undefeated, conference championship seasons during the past eight years.

“Coach Currie brings a wealth of experience to our basketball program,” added Joe Chivari, Marmion athletic director. “He has been part of the Marmion coaching family for many years and has always been successful. I am confident that he will continue to have success.”

Paradise leaves with an overall varsity record of 5361 in his four seasons. He stepped down to focus on other basketball opportunities.

How that translates to the amount of time Lynch will see in the Bears final two exhibition games, starting Friday night against the Seahawks in Seattle, is yet to be seen. While games against the Seahawks and Browns will likely give reserves a chance to lay claim

to roster spots, Lynch has no control over how much time he will see on the field.

So rather than concern himself over such matters, Lynch will continue to fight.

“It’s kind of the way it’s been my whole life,” Lynch told Chicago Football after the Bears 20-19 win over the Jaguars last week at Soldier Field. “I’ll get my shot, I’ll get more opportunities.”

Lynch feels what he calls a “night and day” difference in his comfort level since he started organized team activity drills with the Bears. After reporting to rookie minicamp in May at 205 pounds, Lynch has dropped 15 pounds, putting himself in the best possible position to compete for a spot on the final roster.

He’s a former Super Bowl MVP and 1,000-yard receiver.

The 30-year old Holmes also arrives in Chicago with a reputation as a malcontent, one who threw teammates and coaches under the bus regularly.

He reunites with former Steelers and Jets teammates, all of whom said Monday that

despite his reputation, Holmes has no relationship repairing to do with them.

“They didn’t consult me at all, but I would’ve vouched for him,” said left guard Matt Slauson, who was in the huddle Holmes was reportedly jettisoned from by his teammates as the Jets were trying to clinch a postseason berth in Week 17 of the 2011 season. “I like the guy.

I think he’s a great teammate.

Things out in New York got overblown just because of the way things went on there.”

next to Holmes’, called him a “passionate guy,” but said Holmes wasn’t the only player frustrated in the Jets’ locker room. Holmes was released in March, however, with two years left on a five-year, $50 million pact.

Tight end Matt Mulligan, teammates with Holmes in New York from 2010 to ’11, said he knows Holmes better than any media outlet, and has the utmost respect for him as a teammate and player.

“We all got along up there,” said Mulligan. “I respect San-

tonio; he’s a great player, and I think he’ll really be able to help this team.”

Coming off consecutive injury-shortened seasons, Holmes can help the Bears without being the explosive playmaker he was in Pittsburgh. The Bears have a gaping hole at No. 3 receiver, and Holmes’ punt return experience might be of value.

But no current Bear had a closer glimpse of Holmes’ dynamic skills in Pittsburgh than safety Ryan Mundy, a rookie the same season Holmes was crowned Super Bowl XLIII

MVP after his last-second catch beat the Cardinals.

Mundy did acknowledge the Steelers’ veteran locker room wasn’t conducive for that type of behavior, and he sees a lot of similarities in the environment coach Marc Trestman has created in Chicago.

“That’s the first thing that I felt when I came here in April – wow, this kind of reminds me of Pittsburgh,” said Mundy. “…

And that’s a good thing. You come here, you’re a Chicago Bear, and we’re going to embrace you with open arms.”

CHICAGO – At this point of his NFL career, Jordan Lynch realizes he can’t control when – or even if – his chance will come.

The former Northern Illinois quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist remains buried on the depth chart at running back midway through his first preseason with the Bears.

While being a fan favorite, Lynch is widely considered to be a longshot to make the final 53-man roster and is more likely bound for a practice squad spot.

But nothing suggesting what Lynch’s future could look like has been finalized with two preseason games yet to be played.

And so, like he has for much of his life, Lynch will continue to compete, doing whatever he can to prove that he can stick.

In the Bears first preseason game against Philadelphia, Lynch got an opportunity to showcase what he has learned since he transitioned to running back after going untouched in last spring’s NFL Draft. Last week against Jacksonville, Lynch’s opportunities came on special teams, another position he hadn’t played until the Bears signed him as an undrafted free agent.

Despite seeing limited time against the Eagles and Jaguars, however, Lynch feels much more comfortable at both spots

Lynch’s game evidenced by a fourth-quarter carry against the Eagles when Lynch bulldozed over a defensive back before finishing a 12-yard run on a night when Lynch had seven carries.

Still new at his position, however, Lynch continues to soak in everything he can between film sessions and leaning on veterans such as Matt Forte to bring him along even more.

While limited, Lynch tried to get the most out of every training camp rep he got, sending a message to his coaches that he will do whatever it takes to make the team. The progress Lynch has made may be difficult to accurately measure from the outside. But it’s the little things – his footwork at running back or the way he takes on blocks on special teams – that Lynch picks up on, seeing things that perhaps others dont, proving that he’s closer to being an NFL player than when he first arrived.

For now, Lynch can’t afford to get wrapped up in what his future with the Bears holds. He won’t concern himself about what outsiders’ preliminary 53man rosters look like or questions about what he would need to do between now and Aug. 30 when the roster is trimmed to stay on with his hometown team.

“I don’t have to worry about that,” Lynch said. “I just have to go out there every day and compete and try to get a spot on this team.”

Expectations high for Huskies’ offensive line

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois senior offensive tackle Ryan Brown brings a wealth of experience to the Huskies’ offensive line. And he’s not alone.

The same can be said for fellow tackle Tyler Loos, not to mention junior center Andrew Ness and junior guard Aidan Conlon. All have a boatload of experience for NIU, having started the past two years.

The group that was a big question mark heading into the Orange Bowl season of 2012 has matured greatly, and will be counted on heavily to protect whichever quarterback wins the starting gig.

Conlon and Ness each have 28 starts under their belt.

Brown has 27 and Loos has 19.

“You just don’t get it in college football the way that we

have had it going back to 2012 when we were young,” said NIU coach Rod Carey, who was the group’s offensive line coach two years ago before being promoted to replace Dave Doeren as coach. “They know each other now and they’re talking and communicating.

When you get that on the offensive line that’s the continuity.”

Brown, a St. Charles North graduate, said the continuity is big when it comes to things like communication.

“We know what we’re doing, we know the calls,” he said. “Basically, we don’t have to say anything on the line. We almost know what each other’s going to do.”

The new starter up front is senior guard Tyler Pitt, but even he’s a veteran in a certain sense. Pitt has spent time rotating every other series at guard. Now, the 6-foot-5,

314-pounder is listed as a starter at right guard. “[The experience] helps a lot because I’ve seen the field a lot, I know what’s going on,” Pitt said. “I’ve been playing here the whole time. Now, I just want to start and play more, not get taken out because I can help the team even more.”

The offensive line will play a big part in paving the way for the Huskies tailbacks and protecting either Matt McIntosh, Anthony Maddie or Drew Hare. NIU allowed just 0.79 sacks a game last year, a total which ranked second in the MAC and fifth in the country.

Carey’s expectations are high.

“I expect them not to miss pickups, I expect them not to miss blitzes,” Carey said. “I expect them to handle their men that they see, and to communicate.”

LISLE – After making a name for himself while playing for his dad at Creighton, Doug McDermott was traded to the Bulls on draft night after being selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 11th overall pick.

McDermott recently completed his first summer league with the Bulls and spent some time with the USA Select Team along with Bulls teammate Jimmy Butler. McDermott visited the Bulls/Sox Academy on Wednesday for a Bulls AllDay Player Camp where he signed autographs for young fans and spoke with members of the media, including Shaw Media sports reporter Dan Santaromita.

What was your experience like with the Select Team and getting a chance to be around [Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau]?

McDermott: It was really cool just to get a chance to be around them. Obviously, I can learn a lot from them and I’m going to have a chance to do that coming up here pretty soon.

McDermott: Ball handling, working on my range and with coach Thibodeau, defense. He preaches defense, so that’s something I got to get better at and that’s something I’m looking forward to working with him.

How much do you enjoy events like [the camp] that help you learn a little bit more How was Derrick Rose doing? about your community?

McDermott: It’s great. It’s McDermott: He was real

focused. He wanted to get out there and show what he can do, and he did. He was really good to meet beforehand.

How good was it to see him practicing and playing?

McDermott: It’s been great. We knew it was coming the whole time because we saw it leading up to summer league, so it wasn’t a big surprise to us when he was out there playing well for USA. It’s great to see and great for us as teammates to see that.

Was is hard to hear your name in trade rumors?

McDermott: I didn’t follow it too much. I looked at it as I’m an NBA player either way so you can’t complain.

I’m just glad I’m here. I feel that they really like me here.

I feel like I’m wanted and I want to help out this team.

Has playing with the Select Team the past two years

just awesome being around the kids and the fans. It shows what kind of support the city has to offer. It’s great helping out and giving kids advice because I was in their shoes one day, and they’re all hoping to get into mine.

Who did you follow growing up?

McDermott: I liked the Bulls a lot. I hate to admit it, but I was a huge Reggie Miller Pacers fan, but I liked the Bulls. I’m a Midwest kid, and you dream of playing for Chicago, especially watching M.J. (Michael Jordan).

What’s been the biggest adjustment of becoming a pro basketball player?

McDermott: Just the lifestyle, the routines. Being able to manage your time well. You’re not scheduled to do stuff. You have to show up on your own and get it done.

The company is still in business and makes wrought-iron, aluminum and wicker furniture for casual and outdoor use. Sometimes furniture can be dated by the trademark, style or material. Woodard began making wrought-iron furniture in the 1930s.

Furniture made before 1942 sometimes has brass or copper decoration. Woodard furniture made before the 1970s is labeled with a metal plate. Furniture made after that time was labeled with a sticker. If your set was made by Woodard and doesn’t have a metal label, it was made in the 1970s. *** Q: I have a small collection of railroad memorabilia. I want to sell, but I’m having a problem finding collectors. How can I find them?

What is it worth?

A: We were surprised to discover that there are a few different versions of “Laurel and Hardy on a Bench.” Stan Laurel (1890-1965) and Oliver Hardy (1892-1957) made more than 100 movies together between 1927 and 1950. They continued to be popular through the ‘50s and even into the ‘60s because their movies frequently ran on television. Most versions of your display sell for $50 to $100. ***

Not all game boards are for checkers or chess. Our ancestors played parcheesi, backgammon and cribbage on boards that could be made at home. From about 1850 to 1920, homemade game boards were created by talented folk artists. Elaborate designs that included the required spaces and lines for the game were carefully drawn and colored.

Many game boards were two-sided, most with a checkerboard on one side and a Parcheesi or Backgammon board on the other. The majority of the boards were made of wood, although some were painted on leftover sheets of metal. When the 1950s “Early American” look and the 1960s “American Country” look were at the height of their popularity, game boards sold quickly to be used as wall hangings. The decorating magazines featured groups of boards hanging in a hall or over a sofa, and prices went up. A board in excellent condition with original paint can sell today for hundreds to thousands of dollars. An unusual metal game board for parcheesi and checkers sold at a Cowan auction in

your state allows the sale and if you provide a notarized statement saying the teeth have been in this country and in your possession since 1972. A closely matched pair of unworked and unpolished whale’s teeth can sell for $200 to $400.

A: Railroad memorabilia is known by collectors as “railroadiana.” Some collectors specialize in collecting items from a favored railroad, while others specialize in railroad china, badges, lanterns, locks and keys, timetables or other items. The Railroad Collectors Association website, RailroadCollectors. org, lists railroad hobby shows. If you go to one in your area, you will find collectors and dealers there interested in buying memorabilia.

Moss more than Peggy Olson

By CHRIS KOMPANEK Special to The Washington Post NEW YORK — Elisabeth Moss, best known as Peggy Olson, “Mad Men’s” buttoned-up but ambitious secretary-turned-copywriter, smiles with her whole face while talking about her latest project, “The One I Love.”

The film, written and directed by newcomers Justin Lader and Charlie McDowell, respectively, centers on a married couple (Moss and Mark Duplass) trying to navigate the growing space between them with help from a quirky therapist. He suggests a retreat, which causes both to consider dimensions they never knew were possible. After getting a taste of the eccentric Charlie Kaufman-inspired powers of the properties’ guesthouse, Moss’s character suggests with a gleeful curiosity that they might explore this new world. If that sounds vague and slightly confusing, it’s by design. The filmmakers don’t want viewers to know much going into the movie, and that sometimes trickled down to the cast.

“The scene where I have to explain to Mark what’s going on in the guesthouse, I walk in and he’s freaking out, and I have to tell him what’s happening — I so barely understood what was happening myself!” Moss enthusiastically explains.

It required 10 takes and a combination of Lader’s intricately constructed Albee-esque dialogue and carefully calibrated improv between Moss and Duplass, who’s an accomplished writer, director and producer in his own right. In fact, the genesis of this project was a single sentence he had scribbled down and passed to Lader and McDowell.

“We didn’t want it to sound like improv. We didn’t want to be one of those indie movies where

I like those movies, but we wanted this to have a more classic feel,” Moss explains. The 32-yearold actress, who’s been in show business a whopping 24 years, had experience with broader improv with Jonah Hill and Russell Brand in “Get Him to the Greek,” but this process felt quite different.

“This wasn’t about making everyone laugh all the time. It was about telling a story,” she says.

“Every night, Justin would write the scenes for the next day. We’d sit and go over it. Sometimes it would take 10 minutes and sometimes an hour.” Moss and Duplass would chart lines they would each say. “We just need to make sure we get to this point or hit that emotional beat,” Moss emphasizes. The last 30 pages, she’s quick to point out, are entirely scripted, including her favorite scene, which is impossible to describe without spoilers.

a trailer and they tell you the whole movie and you’re totally [mad]? We don’t want to do that to the audience.

It’s not like ‘The Sixth Sense’ or anything,” Moss emphasizes.

Moss was particularly drawn to the relationship that’s at the heart of the film, and many conversations during filming were focused on the specifics they were creating along with more general and philosophical ruminations on coupling. “The idea that you present this person in the beginning of a relationship.

You bring out all your best qualities, and you’re like 20 percent better than you are.

You bring out this shiny version of yourself, but then after four years, you’re more yourself. And whatever that means. How does that affect the relationship, and how do you get back some of that magic you had in the beginning?”

This led to talks about the ideal partner and how a man’s ideal differs from a woman’s. Moss and producer Mel Eslyn represented the women. “One of the big

things that we discovered was that men think that women want them to be super cool and slick and smooth, but in reality, women find that creepy and sleazy,” Moss says. Outside the sometimes complicated process of measuring nuance between nice and doting (which is also apparently a turnoff), Moss says sweetly, “We actually just want you to make us laugh and make us feel like you’ve been listening to what we’ve said.”

These revelations (along with shooting) took place in two weeks on an idyllic compound in Ojai, California, that doubled as lodging for the cast and crew. The experience reminded Moss of summer camp. “I lived next door, and we all lived around or on the property.

We ate dinner together every night. On our days off, I’d wander into the house and people would just be hanging out on their computers or going to the pool.”

While she’d been splitting her time between New York and Los Angeles for the duration of “Mad Men,” Moss is happy to be back on the East Coast and in New York, where she moved almost 13 years ago to do an off-Broadway play, Richard Nelson’s “Franny’s Way” at Playwrights Horizons.

It’s been reported that she’s in talks to star in a coming Broadway revival of “The Heidi Chronicles,” but she could offer only a coy smile in response. “I haven’t done anything since I did ‘The Children’s Hour’ in London, and I’m kind of itching to have that experience again. And it means I get stuck in New York for six months, which I love.”

She doesn’t favor Broadway or any medium for that matter. “I don’t care how big it is, how long it takes to shoot or what I’m making. If I think it’s a cool script and story and a character that I find challenging.”

ADVICE Readers ready with tips for man with scar

A reminder to stay healthy

Dear Abby: You printed a letter from “Self-Conscious in Georgia” (May 15), a young man who is insecure about the scar from his heart surgery. I have had three surgeries for congenital defects, my first at 2 years old.

Because many women’s fashions expose the upper chest, I applied anti-scar products, which greatly reduced the size and color of my scars.

Swimwear lines have sun-blocking swim shirts that are quick-drying and comfortable. At the beach, “Self-Conscious” could wear a beach-themed T-shirt and say he is reducing his sun exposure, which is a good idea these days.

As to anyone protesting his not going shirtless, true friends accept your choices, no matter the circumstances. They won’t call you out for not following the herd.

And another thing: The young man might benefit from a cardiac support group to lessen his feelings of isolation or inadequacy. He suffered trauma that led to – and created – that scar.

Teens: Do you lay off junk foods, get proper rest, exercise, and ration your TV-watching time?

If your answer is yes, congratulations! But you are the exception, not the rule.

According to a study in The Journal of The American Medical Association, U.S. children 18 and younger are adding unwanted pounds at an alarming rate. In the past decade, the percentage of significantly overweight children has almost doubled.

In prior studies, it took 30 years for the overweight percentage to double. This is an alarming statistic.

Just a reminder: Obese teens usually spend their entire lives being overweight!

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to respond to the girl who was debating whether she should continue going steady with her boyfriend who was leaving for a four-year military stint. All her family and friends were encouraging her to break off the relationship for “logical” reasons, and you agreed.

I can understand where you are all coming from, but life itself isn’t always logical. My boyfriend is in the military overseas and has two more years left to serve of a four-year term. In the past two years, I have only seen him once and that was for a grand total of 20 minutes. He had a very short layover at an airport seven hours from my home. I drove there and back in one day.

Four years is just a minor inconvenience when we plan on being together the rest of our lives. Being separated from a loved one for 1,460 days isn’t easy. It takes heaps of courage, dedication and strength.

When I see patients with this scar, I know they have had open heart surgery. It alerts me to a whole realm of information before anything is said and directs how care is given in case of emergency. Multiple strategies help control urinary incontinence Dear Doctor K: I’ve had urinary incontinence ever since I gave birth last year. Why? Dear Reader: Many women who give birth vaginally go on to develop loss of bladder control. This is called urinary incontinence.

Childbirth can cause two types of incontinence. If urine leaks out when you jump, cough or laugh, or during any activity that puts pressure on your bladder, you have stress incontinence. You have urge incontinence (overactive bladder) if you feel a strong, overwhelming urge to urinate, even when your bladder isn’t full.

How does vaginal delivery lead to incontinence? Your urinary system and reproductive organs are supported, in part, by your pelvic floor. The pelvic floor muscles are the muscles you tighten when you are trying to avoid urinating. (I’ve put an illustration of female reproductive and urinary organs on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

As a baby makes his way through the vaginal birth canal, he may stretch – or even tear or damage – the pelvic floor muscles.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff You are more likely to have pelvic floor damage if your baby weighs more, if you’ve had more than one vaginal birth and if you spend more time in the “pushing” stage of labor. Having an episiotomy (a surgical cut made to expand the vaginal opening during delivery) also increases the risk of pelvic floor damage.

The following strategies can help you manage your incontinence: • Bladder training. This program of urinating on schedule enables you to gradually increase the amount of urine you can comfortably hold.

• Fluid management Cutting down on the amount of fluids you drink can help bring incontinnce under control.

• Pelvic floor exercises. These exercises strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.

• Cognitive behavior therapy.

This type of “talk therapy” is used to help people cope with, and control, both physical and psychological disorders.

• Avoiding certain beverages.

I’ve had patients who discovered that their incontinence improved if they avoided alcoholic and carbonated beverages, coffee and tea.

If it helps a patient, I urge them to do so.

• Losing weight. If you are overweight, losing weight may help improve your incontinence.

If these changes are not sufficient, ask your doctor about other treatment options, including medication and surgery.

Medications can be particularly helpful with urge incontinence.

Yet all medicines have side effects, and the strategies I mention above usually control the problem successfully.

Confucius said, “Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that carry them far apart.”

That certainly applies to bridge players – although claiming that all players’ natures are alike would be stretching the truth.

This week we are exploring some common habits of players that can cost points.

Look at the North and East hands. Against four hearts, West leads the club six. How should East plan the defense?

South opened with a weak two-bid, showing a respectable sixcard suit and 5-10 high-card points.

One can be a tad liberal when nonvulnerable. North understandably took a shot at game. He knew that they might lose the first four tricks in the black suits, but maybe the contract was laydown, or perhaps West might lead a diamond, letting South run for home with hearts headed by the king-queen.

The adage that does not work on this deal is “return your partner’s suit.” That is much more likely to be right in no-trump than in a suit. Here, if East returns a club, West wins the trick but is endplayed. He cannot do better than to exit with a diamond to dummy’s jack. But South continues with the heart ace and another trump to take one spade, five hearts and four diamonds.

East can see three probable winners in the heart king, club ace and club king. (West would not have been likely to lead from jack-high clubs.) The fourth trick has to come from spades. If West holds that ace, there is no hurry, but if he has the king, there isn’t a moment to lose.

At trick two, East must shift to the spade seven (top of nothing).

Then the contract will fail.

There will be a $50.00 fee for bid packets and plans. If picked up at park district, checks should be made payable to the Geneva Park District. If picked up at BHFX, the plan deposit will be made out to BHFX. Bids are due at or before 10:00 a.m. on Friday September 5, 2014 at the park district office, at which time they will be publicly opened and read aloud. Late bids will NOT be accepted.

All bids must be submitted on the proposal forms included in the bid documents and accompanied by cash, a certified bank draft, or a bid bond from an accredited surety company payable to: Geneva Park District for an amount equal to 10% of the bid submitted.

All contracts for work herein are subject to the provisions of all Geneva Park District regulations.

To the extent that the Illinois Prevailing Wage Act applies, Contractor must pay and require all subcontractors to pay the prevailing rate of wages to all related laborers, workers, and mechanics involved in the project. as established by the Illinois Department of Labor for each craft or type of work needed to execute the contract in accordance with 820 ILCS 130/.01 et seq. The Contractor shall prominently post the current schedule of prevailing wages at the Contract site and shall notify immediately in writing all of its Subcontractors, of all changes in the schedule of prevailing wages. Any increases in costs to the Contractor due to changes in the prevailing rate of wage during the terms of any contract shall be at the expense of the Contractor and not at the expense of the Owner. The change order shall be computed using the prevailing

wage rates applicable at the time the change order work is scheduled to be performed. The Contractor shall be solely responsible to maintain accurate records as required by the prevailing wage statute and to obtain and furnish all such certified records to the District as required by Statute. The Contractor shall be solely liable for paying the difference between prevailing wages and any wages actually received by laborers, workmen and/or mechanics engaged in the Work and in every way defend and indemnify the District against any claims arising under or related to the payment of wages in 4 accordance with the Prevailing Wage Act. Likewise, Contractor shall comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and rules promulgated by any Federal, State, County, Municipal and or other governmental unit or regulatory body now in effect during the performance of the work. By way of example, the following are included within the scope of the laws, regulations and rules referred to in this paragraph, but in no way to operate as a limitation on the laws, regulations and rules with which Contractor must comply, are all forms of Workers Compensation Laws, all terms of the Equal Employment Opportunity Clause of the Illinois Fair Employment Practices Commission, the Illinois Preference Act, the Social Security Act, Statutes relating to contracts let by units of government, all applicable Civil Rights and Anti-Discrimination Laws and Regulations, and traffic and public utility regulations.

The Contractor, before commencing the Work, shall furnish a Performance Bond and a Labor and Material (aka Payment) Bond. The Performance Bond shall be in an amount equal to 100% of the full amount of the Contract Sum as security for the faithful performance of the obligation of the Contract Documents, and the Labor and Material Payment Bond shall be in an amount equal to 100% of the full amount of the Contract Sum as security for the payment of all persons performing labor and furnishing materials in connection with the Contract Documents. Such bonds shall be on standard AIA Documents, issued by the American Institute of Architects, shall be issued by a surety satisfactory to the Owner, and shall name the Owner as a primary co-obligee. The cost of the bonds is to be included in the Bid Proposal. The Performance Bond and Labor and Material Payment Bond will become a part of the Contract. Each Bidder shall list the name of the surety company that will be furnishing the Bonds on its Bid Proposal. The failure of a Bidder to list the name of its surety company on its Bid Proposal shall be a non-responsive bid. The failure of the successful Bidder to enter into a Contract and supply the required Bonds within ten (10) days after the Notice of Award or within such extended period as the Owner may grant if the forms do not meet its approval shall constitute a default, and the Owner may either award the Contract to the next responsible, responsive Bidder or re-advertise for bids. A charge against the defaulting Bidder may be made for the difference between the amount of the bid and the amount for which a contract for the work is subsequently executed, irrespective of whether the amount thus due exceeds the amount of the bid guarantee.

All bids will remain firm for 90 days after the bid opening. The Geneva Park District reserves the right to reject any or all bid proposals or to accept any bid proposal, which in its judgment, will be in the best interest of the public or to waive any informalities in bidding.

The Geneva Park District encourages small and minority businesses and women's business firms to submit bids on the approved project and successful contract bidders to utilize small and minority businesses and women's businesses as sub-contractors for supplies, equipment, services, and construction.
