Deputy Police Chief Huffman leaving St. Charles for Antioch KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – One of the deputy police chiefs at the St. Charles Police Department is leaving to serve at another police department, according to a news release.

Steve Huffman, St. Charles deputy police chief of administration, will retire from the department effective Friday after nearly 22 years of service, the release stated.

Before joining the department, Huffman was an aviation mechanic with the U. S. Marine Corps. Huffman holds a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice administration from Columbia Southern University, the release stated.

Huffman was instrumental in revising and implementing the city’s liquor code and served on the team that successfully earned the St. Charles Police Depart-

ment its eighth national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

“Steve’s knowledge and experience in law enforcement and commitment to public safety resulted in quality relationships within the community and the city organization,” St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan wrote in the release. “I wish Chief Huffman well in his future endeavors and thank him for his service to our community, the police department and the citizens of St. Charles.”

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Batavia fire lieutenant charged with aggravated domestic battery was released Saturday afternoon from Kane County Jail after posting 10 percent of a $150,000 bond.

Ralph Strange, 50, of the 34W200 block of Sunset Drive near Batavia, is charged with one count of aggravated domestic battery, one count of aggravated battery to cause bodily harm and two counts of domestic battery.

Conditions of his bond include that he not have any direct or indirect contact with the victim, that he not go within 150 feet of the victim’s

house, and that he surrender any firearms in his possession to local law enforcement, according to court records.

He has a court hearing set for Aug. 26.

Strange has worked for the Batavia Fire Department since 1990, according to Wendy Bednarek, Ralph Strange director of human resources for the city of Batavia.

An emergency order of protection against Strange was issued Wednesday, and it is in effect until Aug. 27.

According to court records, Strange on or about Aug. 9 allegedly used a closed fist to punch a family member multiple times in the face, causing fractures. The incident reportedly happened in Batavia.

Court records also state Strange allegedly caused bruises to the victim’s left arm and left knee after the initial incident and that he has been verbally abusive to the victim. The victim decided not to contact law enforcement officials at the time out of concern it could affect Strange’s longtime employment, according to records.

After conferring with a close family member, the victim decided to seek emergency medical assistance Aug. 11, and the hospital contacted law enforcement officials, records state. The victim previously had an order of protection against Strange in 1996, according to records.

Strange also was required to go through alcohol and drug education after being charged by Geneva police in 2006 for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to court records.

GENEVA – Geneva School District 304 will destroy special education records from the 2009-10 school year for students who graduated, transferred or were dismissed from special services.

Special education records may include reports of psychological and social work evaluations, multidisciplinary planning conferences, annual reviews, copies of individualized education programs and other relevant information.

If parents or students want those records, they should call Ronnie Griffith in the Student Services Office at 630-463-3061 before Sept. 4.

City amends ordinance to recognize concealed carry Aldermen delay air gun discussion

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva aldermen Monday amended the city code to recognize the Illinois Concealed Carry Act and the exemption it creates

for people who legally carry them.

In a separate vote, aldermen amended city code to prohibit the discharge of a firearm within the city limits.

The first vote was six “yes” and one abstention from 4th Ward Alderman Ron Singer, who then recused himself from the second vote, citing his Korean

war experience.

“I have strong feelings about weapons as such,” Singer said.

Three aldermen were absent, 2nd Ward Aldermen Richard Marks and Don Cummings and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra.

Further discussion of making it illegal to fire air guns and BB guns in the city will be postponed to later this

month or next month, Mayor Kevin Burns said.

Police Chief Steve Mexin had recommended that inclusion, citing how realistic the weapons look and their projectiles traveling 1,200 feet a second.

But some aldermen and city residents objected, so the issue was tabled for further discussion, officials said.

Resident Bill Pietsch said

he would return for the continuing discussion of BB and air guns.

“I’m concerned,” Pietsch said. “I have heard other communities have passed this air rifle language. ...

To me, making an air rifle discharge against city ordinance is – it just doesn’t seem right. It seems like a step too far. I’m not sure where you start to draw the line.”

Aldermen to review video gaming ordinance draft

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The majority of St. Charles aldermen Monday decided the issue of whether to allow video gaming in the city needs “a straight up or down” vote.

The aldermen voted, 6-3, to direct staff to draft an ordinance to allow video gaming in St. Charles with specific conditions. The vote took place at the city’s Government Operations Committee meeting, with Aldermen Ron Silkaitis

of Ward 1, Rita Payleitner of Ward 2 and Maureen Lewis of Ward 5 voting against the motion.

Ward 4 Alderman Bill Turner proposed the ordinance only allow video gaming in fraternal organizations and restaurants and bars that are in good standing with the city’s Liquor Control Commission.

Turner also requested a five-year time limit on the ordinance so the St. Charles City Council can revisit the ordinance for reauthorization.

Payleitner continued to oppose the idea of video gaming in St. Charles, citing its social and economic costs.

“My point is, [under video gaming] we’re benefiting from people’s losses,” Payleitner said.

As of Monday night, city staff plans to have a video gaming ordinance draft for the aldermen to review at the next Government Operations Committee meeting Sept. 8, City Administrator Mark Koenen said.

EARLY START

Batavia High School first in area to start new academic year

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As the hallways of Batavia High School filled with teens and chatter Monday morning, Principal JoAnne Smith stood at the ready, eager to help lost students navigate their way to their first class or locker.

Many students arrive on the first day of school knowing where to go, Smith said, noting some walk their schedule 20 times in advance. But for others, she said, that day is their first time in the building.

“Hi, can I help you find something?” she asked one teen, who also wanted to know what supplies he should bring to class.

Batavia High School, which has 2,011 registered students, was the first public school in the Tri-Cities area to start the 2015-16 academic year and greeted students with the “Welcome Back, Kotter” theme song at the start of the morning announcements.

Although classes didn’t start until 7:35 a.m., students began arriving at Batavia

High School before 7 a.m. An early start meant a good parking space for 16-year-old junior Reed Gordon and extra time to socialize for Joe Bautch, who was heading to the library to

see people he hadn’t seen in a while.

“First days are always fun,” the 16-year-old sophomore said. “It’s exciting in a way.”

Smith agreed, saying the start of a new year brings a palpable excitement among students, regardless of grade level.

Educators look forward to the day, too, she said.

“This is what we’ve been working for all summer,” Smith said, describing the first day as the “culmination of two months of work for us.”

The third-year principal stationed herself in a heavily trafficked area near the bus drop-off, where students were greeted by Brad Newkirk, the district’s chief academic officer, and Chris Evensen, the lead campus monitor.

“They make you walk all the way from there? Seriously?” Evensen said to a bus load of students that were dropped off near the end of the unloading zone.

Public hearing set for proposed TIF district for West Town area

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen on Monday night set a public hearing for the proposed creation of a tax increment financing district for the city’s West Town area.

The hearing will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Batavia City Council chambers at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. In addition, the city will convene a joint review board at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Batavia Government

Center to review the proposal and make a recommendation.

The joint review board will include a representative from each affected taxing district, along with a city representative and a public member.

The West Town area is centered at the intersection of Main Street and Mallory Avenue, and extends about two blocks north and south. It would cost an estimated $20.9 million to redevelop the city’s West Town area, according to a TIF redevelopment project and plan Teska Associates

Inc. prepared for the city’s West Town area.

That $20.9 million estimate includes the cost of such things as demolition of buildings and site improvements, the repair or remodeling of existing public or private buildings and fixtures, street repair or reconstruction, environmental remediation, infrastructure improvements and development financing costs.

Teska’s report affirmed eligibility study findings indicating the area meets stat-

utory requirements for designation as a conservation TIF district. Under that designation, at least 50 percent of the area’s buildings must be at least 35 years old.

Other conditions that make the area qualify as a conservation district include deteriorating buildings, structures below minimum code standards and a decline in equalized assessed value.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen, and new or increased taxes generated

by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

According to Teska’s report, upon the completion of anticipated redevelopment projects, it is estimated the equalized assessed valuation of real property within the redevelopment project area will be in excess of $25 million, about a 585 percent increase in the total equalized assessed valuation of the West Town redevelopment project area.

The TIF would be in force for 23 years.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles resident Clifford McIlvaine took to the airwaves Monday morning to talk about his ongoing fight with the city regarding his decades-long improvement project to his house.

McIlvaine was a guest on the Mancow radio show on The Loop 97.9 FM Chicago.

During the show, McIlvaine spoke about how the city won’t let him use rainwater he collected through a cistern for drinking water.

The city and McIlvaine have been at odds over his ongoing improvement project at his house at 605 Prairie St. He started the project more than 30 years ago.

“I’m not only fighting for me, I’m fighting for everybody,” McIlvaine said during his appearance on the show.

Blair Alexander, the frontman of St. Charles band Green Denim, arranged for his appearance on the show, McIlvaine said.

A cistern is a tank for storing rainwater. In response to the comments McIlvaine made on the radio show, Phil Luetkehans, an attorney for St. Charles, said McIlvaine signed a court order saying he would not use the rainwater for bathing or drinking water.

system that could possibly combine his water with our water,” Luetkehans said.

The city expressed concerns the cistern system would pollute city water. Alexander also started a petition in support of McIlvaine at www.petitionsite.com.

“St. Charles veteran Clifford McIlvaine is under the threat of losing his home to the St. Charles government because of a rain water filtration system his father built when he was a child,” the petition stated. “The city has now started doing additions to Clifford’s house, the city installed a new roof that is now flooding his house.

They have been doing anything they can to drive Clifford out of his home which he has lived in his whole life.”

The city of St. Charles in July filed a lien against McIlvaine’s house for the $84,936 it says he owes the city. But Luetkehans said the city doesn’t have any desire to own McIlvaine’s house.

“We have a desire to be paid for what he owes the city and attorney’s fees and fines pursuant to the prior court orders that were entered,” Luetkehans said.

“We’re hoping that a resolution can be worked out with Mr. McIlvaine to pay what he owes.”

The crowd attended the dedication ceremony for the ‘reflections’ sculpture and Volunteer Plaza, both located immediately north of the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The dedication is a culmination of an effort started in 2010 by Dr. C. Alfred Patten to have a piece of public art in the city that honors volunteerism, as exemplified by the late Max Hunt and his wife, Doris.

Patten on Sunday recounted the time he first saw the sculpture on Aug. 4.

“Tears came to my eyes as I realized that a five-year journey was over – a journey that included frustration and disappointment, but was also much fun and very rewarding,” Patten read to the audience. “It’s been a journey I would gladly take again in a heartbeat.”

Weigand was a founder of two high schools sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois – Rosary High S c h o o l i n Sister Mary A u r o r a i n Joseph the 1960s and Weigand Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights.

“She served the schools and her sisters quietly and with great love – we will miss her,” officials wrote in the release.

The visitation for Weigand will be from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Convent, 1237 W. Monroe St., Springfield. A 4:30 p.m. vigil and 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial – followed by a reception – also will be celebrated at the convent.

At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, there will be morning prayer, remembrances and a final commendation for Weigand at the convent.

Bellaver on Sunday said he wanted to create the sculpture as part of his Fermilab-inspired Quark series, where the art is all about energy.

The sculpture is about the energy found in volunteers, and Bellaver said he wanted residents to see themselves reflected within the city.

Patten thanked Bellaver and his wife, Elizabeth, for their contributions to the project, in addition to the many financial donors.

Several of them were in attendance, including St. Charles resident Andy Hanses.

Hanses said the dedication

was especially poignant for him because his late wife, Jill, was a frequent volunteer for various local charities and was a longtime board member, treasurer and president of Anderson Animal Shelter.

“It’s nice to see everybody involved here in the community,” Hanses said.

Donors John and Joan O’Leary said the sculpture was lovely and magnificent.

Joan O’Leary also praised Doris Hunt for her humility and beauty.

Doris Hunt spoke softly but had a powerful message for the dedication’s attendees. At one point she asked them to hold out their hands.

“Each one of you have hands that can reach out and touch the community,” Doris Hunt said. “They need your helping hands.”

Clinton should match talk with action on campaign finance THE WASHINGTON POST Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton has made it a point in some early speeches to call for cleaning up the dark money flowing through U.S. politics.

“We need to fix our dysfunctional political system and get unaccounted money out of it, once and for all, even if that takes a constitutional amendment,” she said in April in Iowa, describing campaign finance reform as one of the “four big fights” of her campaign.

If she is serious about it, Clinton might take a closer look at a recent transaction that has benefited the main super PAC supporting her campaign, Priorities USA Action.

The group, which is theoretically independent of the Clinton campaign but clearly is supporting her and has longtime supporters of Clinton on its board, received a $1 million donation that cannot be traced, according to a report by The Associated Press.

Super PACs are campaign finance vehicles that are supposed to be independent of campaigns and can accept unlimited amounts of donations, as permitted by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. Super PACs are required to identify their donors. But as the trail of the $1 million to Priorities USA Action shows, there are gaping loopholes. In this case, dark money moved to a super PAC without the original donors being disclosed.

Priorities USA Action got the donation June 29 from another super PAC, called Fair Share Action, the AP reported. And that super PAC received the money from two nonprofit “social welfare” groups, Fair Share Inc. and Environment America Inc. These organizations, regulated by the Internal Revenue Service, do not have to publicly disclose their donors. According to the AP, Fair Share advocates for job creation, and Environment America works on issues such as climate change. The groups told the AP that their funds come from many small donors, but the exact origin of the $1 million remains in the shadows. A spokesman for Priorities USA Action insisted the group is “playing by the rules.”

This opaque shuffling of cash from one group to another is exactly what Clinton meant by “unaccounted money.” She should tell all groups supporting her – including the supposedly “independent” super PAC – that they must identify the original sources of contributions, or else give the money back.

The IRS has been re-examining the use of “social welfare” groups as dark money channels, but the agency has indicated that whatever rules are forthcoming will not be applied to the 2016 election cycle.

This is a mistake; despite its recent troubles, the IRS needs to reduce the amount of hidden political money flowing through these groups, and do it now, not later. Otherwise, the abuses will grow.

Home is where we should be able to prosper and feel safe. Home is where I am most comfortable and the spot that I am most likely to defend to my death. Illinois is my home, and – for most of you reading this – Illinois is your home, too. Now I ask you, do you want to live and die here? Do you feel safe and prosperous here? If your answer is no or you are the least bit hesitant to respond, it is probably connected in some way to the Illinois state budget – or the lack of a state budget.

The governor and the leaders of the Illinois General Assembly have dug their heels in and tossed compromise into the wind. The dust is hitting you and me in the face. Human services providers are choking, trying to stay alive to serve those most at risk in our communities. This budget impasse is threaten-

ing our safety, our prosperity and our comfort. We, the people, cannot be happy with – or passive – about that!

Please join me in urging the governor and General Assembly to act now to resolve their political differences and enact a budget. No action has terrible consequences for all of us, especially for our fellow citizens at greater risk, including low-income families, children, older adults and persons with disabilities. The longer the budget impasse lasts, the deeper the erosion to human services. Financial reserves will be exhausted; lines of credit will be maxed out; staff will be laid off; hours and days of operation will be reduced; and, finally, doors will close.

According to the Illinois Department on Aging, in fiscal 2014, thousands of people in the state received home-delivered meals – in some cases, postponing or preventing institutionalization. Should

the state budget situation go unresolved, adult protective service providers might not have the staff or resources to investigate approximately 15,000 reports (based on last year’s numbers) of alleged abuse, neglect or financial exploitation concerning seniors and the disabled. Those suffering from mental illnesses may not be able to obtain stabilizing medications.

Let’s raise our voices for those who cannot speak for themselves. Gov. Bruce Rauner, House Speaker Mike Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and all our elected officials, come to the table of compromise and adopt a budget. East, North team up to beat Bulldogs, Vikings

By RUSSELL HODGES editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – St. Charles North and St. Charles East are traditionally crosstown rivals.

But on Monday, the two high schools joined forces to defeat another pair of nemeses, in Geneva and Batavia, 152.5-135.5, to win the 2015 McChesney Cup at Geneva Golf Course.

The event is the first of the high school season. Its unique format places two rival schools on the same team and pits them against another rival duo in three distinct 9-hole rounds of competition: best-ball, singles and alternate-shot.

“I love it,” Batavia head coach Tim DeBruycker said.

The North Stars and Saints began the afternoon by edg-

ing the Vikings and Bulldogs, 35.5-36.5, in best-ball play.

Batavia senior Nicholas Robinson and Geneva senior Ethan Dalton combined to take their matchup, 5.5-3.5, and give the Vikings and Bulldogs their biggest victory of a very tight first round.

“I really think that shows the caliber of golf here in the Tri-Cities,” East coach John Stock said. “Everybody’s playing their own ball, and the best-ball was a one-stroke

difference after 72 points.

That shows that we’re pretty close.”

North and East lengthened their lead with an impressive showing in singles play, defeating Geneva and Batavia, 79-65. East sophomore Danny Buetow’s 7-2 victory over Batavia’s Andrew Nelson was the biggest win for the North Stars/Saints combo.

Juniors Charlie Vyskocil and Andrew Abel combined to win 14 holes for the Bulldogs/ Vikings pair, while Robinson chipped in a 5.5-3.5 win.

After winning the best-ball and singles rounds, North and East wrapped things up with a 37-35 victory in alternate-shot play. Buetow and North senior Hank Zimmer earned a 7-2 victory over Robinson and Geneva senior James Kruzich, the largest win of the alternate-shot round.

“I’m real pleased,” North coach Rob Prentiss said. “I saw a lot of quality shots from the North Stars today. They teamed up with the Saints pretty well.”

With a victory, North and East increase their all-time series lead in the McChesney Cup to 5-2.

The Vikings will return to the tees today when they square off against Kaneland, Glenbard South and South Elgin at Mill Creek Golf Course in Geneva.

Batavia’s next action will be Wednesday’s Larkin Invite at Algonquin’s Golf Club of Illinois.

East will play in the Woodstock Invite at Plum Tree Golf Course on Thursday, while North is off until the 23rd, when they will travel to Westview Golf Course and participate in the Quincy Invite.

Support system will help during busy year North coach, Masoncup, will take on three varsity jobs in 2015-16 school year

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com Sean Masoncup was ready for his summer vacation with his family, driving to Florida at the end of July, when he got a phone call from St. Charles North Athletic Director Dan Dolney.

The North Stars AD informed Masoncup, who has been the North Stars’ girls basketball coach for three years and boys tennis coach for five, that girls tennis coach Eve Tubman would not retain her position after mov-

ing to Atlanta to be closer to her family.

The job was Masoncup’s if he wanted it. But being the head varsity coach of three sports was not a decision he made lightly. After discussing the pros and cons with his wife, who Masoncup joked was ‘the boss’ in all of this, he decided to step in for a season and become the girls tennis head coach.

“I started coaching for the kids and I the last thing I wanted to see was them going without a coach,” Masoncup said. “It’s hard to find tennis

coaches in general, yet alone two weeks before the season, so I figured I would step in for a year and then reevaluate.”

That’s the plan. Masoncup, who also coached boys sophomore basketball for 10 years before to getting the girls varsity job, will coach the three sports this season and decide what is best based on how things go.

One person Masoncup can seek advice from on coaching three sports is Tom Poulin, who also coaches three sports, two of which as a head coach.

Poulin is in charge of the boys

basketball (this will be his 10th year) and softball (sixth year) teams, while serving as an assistant on head coach Rob Pomazak’s football staff.

Poulin knows how much of a balancing act coaching can be when involved in just one sport. But, with three, and Poulin has done so for 18 years, some of which are on lower levels, he knows there won’t be much down time for Masoncup this year.

“He’ll always have something to do,” Poulin said.

“When you coach one sport, there’s always something you

can be doing, so he will definitely be busy. But I know Sean, and I know he’ll be fine.

He’s organized and has a passion for every sport he coaches.”

Poulin also referred to how much a support system can help when things get hectic as a coach, but how the North community and parents have made his job just a little bit easier.

Positives, negatives from camp CHICAGO FOOTBALL Chicago Football Bears writers Kevin Fishbain, Arthur Arkush and Nate Atkins wrap up the 2015 Bears training camp, analyzing the ups and downs of another summer in Bourbonnais.

Fishbain: I felt I was doing a disservice to my Twitter followers at times during camp when I’d mention how impressive Alshon Jeffery or Matt Forte looked. Those guys should be performing at a high level. So for my star of Bears camp, I go with Eddie Royal. As only a casual observer of Royal over his career, I was struck by his route running and hands – he seemed to catch everything Jay Cutler threw his way. And now, the Bears need him to build off that when the season begins. Who else caught your eyes at Olivet Nazarene University?

Atkins: Royal was impressive in the absence of Kevin White and at times Jeffery, and so was Marquess Wilson.

He looked good a year ago at this time, before being injured, but he looks like he’s taken his route running and ball skills to a new level.

The question for him remains whether his effort and body will hold up, but Bears fans should feel better about the chances of filling White’s void early in the year.

Arkush: The obvious ones on defense are Pernell McPhee and Shea McClellin, but I’ve been equally impressed by the growth of Sam Acho from camp’s start to finish. He’s showed more explosion and fluidity than I expected. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by the ball skills and aggressiveness of corners Tracy Porter and Terrance Mitchell. If healthy, the former Super Bowl hero looks like a starter, while Mitchell – if he can show enough on special teams – might challenge for the final defensive back spot.

Two newcomers I expected to see more from by now are

Alan Ball and Mason Foster, maybe not the starters most initially projected them to be.

Fishbain: Perfect segue, Arthur, to analyze some of the disappointments of camp, players that have room for improvement in the coming weeks before roster cuts. Obviously, the biggest negative is Kevin White’s injury, but we’ve covered that enough, right? Let me throw in this caveat that practices tend to favor the offense, and it’s a bit harder to find defensive stars, but I wonder whether we’ve downplayed what a concern the secondary could be. Brock Vereen and Kyle Fuller had shaky preseason debuts, plus, as Arthur mentioned, we haven’t seen a ton from Ball yet. Last I checked, the Bears need to trot out five defensive backs often on Sundays this fall. Who else joins Fuller, Tim Jennings and Antrel Rolle?

Atkins: I’d be remiss if I didn’t first mention what a camp David Bass had. The former practice squad player regularly bullied tackles and backs while showcasing the 6-foot-4 frame to disrupt passes thrown his way. On the flip side, Willie Young looks like he could be the odd man out at that crowded

position, which would be a stunning fall for a guy who led the Bears with 10 sacks last season. He’s had a tough go recovering the Achilles he tore late last year, and he just hasn’t earned the reps or shown the signs of making what was bound to be a difficult position switch. On offense, Jordan Mills had a chance to quiet the doubters and did the opposite. The Bears have figured out a lot on offense, but right tackle remains a real concern.

Arkush: I think we’re all on record as saying they’ll regret not finding a challenger for Mills. I’ve seen a lot more to like about Adrian Amos than Vereen, but suspect Ryan Mundy will be alongside former running mate Rolle when Week 1 arrives. It’s certainly fair to wonder whether Fuller is closer to the rookie of the month in September or overmatched first-year player we saw thereafter, and though he benefits from the inexperienced competition, Tim Jennings’ role still remains a bit unclear to me.

Conversely, Demontre Hurst seems to be gaining steam and, as I mentioned before, don’t sleep on Mitchell, who seemingly flashed daily in Bourbonnais.

Coaching three sports in straight seasons takes up quite a bit of time and he wanted to make sure he didn’t become the coach he told himself he’d never be.

“I never wanted to be that father coach,” Masoncup said. “I have always wanted to watch and enjoy my children play. I think with them being involved in sports, it won’t affect it as much as it seems. I’m lucky to have sev-

eral important people in my life that makes this possible.”

For one, his family is the top support system for Masoncup. But beyond his family, he talked about how his assistant coaches have been crucial.

The three sports will certainly be difficult to transition into, but the fact that he coaches both tennis teams makes that transition much easier. But, basketball is its own season and, of course, falls in between tennis seasons.

“Basketball was my biggest worry in doing this,” Masoncup said. “I wanted to make sure everything could

still run smoothly and I have amazing coaches by my side that can make that happen.

One big thing why all of this is possible is because I was once told to ‘ always surround yourself with coaches that are better than you.’ It’s true.

Everyone who I have on my staffs are ready to step in and take control.”

But Masoncup didn’t just praise his assistant coaches, but also the players in keeping him sane, saying he’s fortunate to be surrounded with athletes that take the initiative to better themselves on their own.

Taking one day at a time has also kept Masoncup…

well somewhat sane. He said not looking to far ahead has been important in not getting stressed out and knowing he’ll be successful in this kind of role.

“That’s all you can do,” Masoncup said. “I continue to look at each day one at a time.

If you look ahead, it could be overwhelming, but it’s a group effort. I know my name ends up being the one doing it all because I’m the head coach, but this is definitely a group effort and I have a lot of great people around me.”

Masoncup’s first season as girls tennis coach begins right away, as fall practices have gotten well underway.

are white with green flowers and gold trim. Printed on the bottom of each piece: “Underglaze, J & E Mayer, JUNO.” I have 12 place settings and many serving pieces. I am anxious to learn about this dinnerware for my family history.

A: Joseph (?-1930) and Ernest (1857-1920) Mayer bought a waterpowered pottery in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and founded J & E Mayer in 1881. Their father had operated the Dale Hall Works in Burslem, England. The firm changed its name to Mayer Pottery Co. in 1888. The factory burned down in 1896, but was rebuilt on an even larger scale. After 1912, the company’s primary product became china for many different restaurants, railroads, ships, airlines and the military. Joseph’s sons continued the business, which was renamed Mayer China Co. in 1923. It became a subsidiary of Shenango China in 1964, was bought by Interpace in 1968, by Richard Rifenburgh in 1979, then by Syracuse China in 1984. The Beaver Falls factory closed in 1990, but Mayer China is still considered a Syracuse China Co. brand name. Given the mark, your great-grandmother’s Juno pattern dinnerware was made in the J & E Mayer era, between 1881 and 1888.

The antiques auction catalog stated there was a rare and valuable “veilleuse” in the next sale. That is a descriptive word a seasoned auction-goer would understand, but the antiques meaning is not in most dictionaries. It is a French word that, when translated to English, means “sofa.” The second meaning in large dictionaries is “small nightlight.” But the current meaning for antiques buyers is an object that is used to warm drinks near a bedside as well as serve as a nightlight. A small teapot was added to the veilleuse in the early 1800s. The teapot was heated by an oil lamp. A three-part Gothic Revival veilleuse, made in about 1840, was auctioned in May 2015 for $1,476.

It was decorated with hand-painted views of people inside a cathedral.

The teapot and borders were covered with gold glaze. White beading was on most horizontal edges. The auction catalog said it might have been decorated by Darte. A search online gave no information about Darte. But a 1950s French book about French porcelains identified the Darte brothers as makers and decorators of porcelain vases and serving pieces, which would include a veilleuse, in Paris after 1825. *** Q: I found a set of six bent plywood chairs tagged “Thonet.” They look midcentury modern, and have a molded seat and an upright piece that supports a shoulder-height backrest.

Do they have any value?

A: Mid-century modern furniture is popular today. Thonet is a well-known maker known for its bentwood furniture. Michael Thonet (1796-1871) be-

gan making bentwood furniture in the 1830s. He and his sons opened a factory in Vienna in 1853. The company still is in business and makes modern furniture and a modernized version of the original chair. A set of six molded plywood chairs recently sold for $350. *** Q: I have a shadow box with the “Mysteries of the Rosary” below a picture of the Blessed Virgin. A knob on each side turns and scrolls through the different Mysteries. The box is 17 by 26 inches. On the back it says “Koenig Bros. 1912.” Can you tell me anything about this?

A: Jacob Koenig, was born in Germany in 1862, immigrated to the United States in 1883, and settled in Jersey City, New Jersey. He sold religious items door to door before starting Koenig Brothers. Scroll boxes like yours sell online for about $40. *** Q: I have an “Ideal” chest slow cooker with round heating stones made by The Toledo Cooker Co. The metal label reads “No. 18, Patented April 14, 1914, Patented July 7, 1914.”

Can you tell me about it and its possible value?

A: The patents were granted to Charles E. Swartzbaugh, who invented the fireless cooker. He founded the Peerless Cooker Co. in Buffalo, New York, in 1884. The company was renamed The Toledo Cooker Co. about 1900, after it moved to Toledo.

By 1916, the company was making two lines of fireless cookers, “Ideal” and “Domestic Science.” The cookers worked something like today’s slow cookers, but were heated by hot stones, not a flame. Metal cook pots were set into a wooden box or chest insulated with asbestos. Cooking could be started early in the day

Dear Abby: Two years ago, I met a gentleman, and he eventually decided we were “soul mates.” I agreed. So, I confided that I’d had an abortion at the age of 18, which has haunted me all my adult life.

Recently he was reciting a chronology of my life. When he got to the abortion, he said, “... and then you became a child murderer.” His comment stunned me.

Mild shoulder impingement treated with ice, medication Dear Doctor K: I have pain in my shoulder when I raise my arm above my head. My doctor says it’s caused by “impingement.” What does that mean, and what can I do about it?

Dear Reader: You know the wide variety of things your shoulder allows you to do – such as reach for a box of cereal, swing a golf club and wash your hair. Its wide range of motion makes all these things possible. However, the design of a joint that lets you do all of that also leaves the joint vulnerable to injury.

Joints are places where two or more bones meet. The shoulder joint is where three bones meet: the clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder blade) and the humerus (upper arm bone).

The shoulder is a highly mobile ball-and-socket joint. The top of the humerus is a ball of bone that sits in the bony socket formed by the clavicle and scapula. The ball-and-socket construction allows the arm to move freely. It moves when muscles, tendons and ligaments tug on the bone to move it. That group of muscles, tendons and ligaments is called the rotator cuff. (I’ve put an illustration on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Shoulder impingement occurs when the rotator cuff is weak-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff ened or torn and cannot hold the humerus in its proper place when you lift your arm. As a result, the arm bone gets slightly dislodged and pinches the tendons and ligaments against another of the shoulder bones. This can cause a pinching sensation, pain or weakness when you raise your arm above your head.

Impingement can cause inflammation and swelling in the tendons. This narrows the space between the arm bone and the shoulder blade. As the space shrinks, the arm bone can’t rotate fully in the socket. It gets harder to lift your arm above shoulder level.

When impingement occurs suddenly, it’s usually a result of overworking your shoulder. If you are a professional baseball pitcher, you’re at high risk. (By the way, if you are, and if you’re really good, my Boston Red Sox need you as soon as your shoulder gets fixed!) But even if you’re just playing 18 holes of golf after a winter away from the course, you can develop the condition.

Impingement can also develop slowly as tendons tighten with age

or arthritis develops.

If your shoulder pain came on suddenly, try treating it with rest and ice. Avoid reaching overhead.

But don’t immobilize your shoulder by wearing a sling. Apply ice packs every few hours to reduce inflammation. Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can help relieve pain.

The longer you have pain, the more likely it is that your shoulder movement gradually will become limited. Eventually you may not be able to lift your arm over your head. It’s called a “frozen shoulder.” Your doctor can refer you to a physical therapist. He or she will help you adjust your movements to strengthen your rotator cuff muscles and loosen the tendons and ligaments.

If you catch it early, shoulder impingement can usually be improved or cured. On occasion, surgery is required. When your condition is improved, you’ll look back in appreciation of all the things a healthy shoulder lets you do.

Dr. Wallace: I’m pretty sure you won’t print this letter even though I wish you would. I’m 19 and happily married to a mature and very sweet 18-year-old young woman. We had been going steady for over a year when we decided to get married. My fatherin-law told us we could marry when she was 18 if we were sure we were in love.

We were both positive that we were meant for each other, and we had a lovely church wedding with all our family and friends there.

We have been married three months now and we have no regrets whatsoever.

My wife and I enjoy reading your column, and we know you don’t think it’s a good idea to marry at such a young age, but I think our case is definitely the exception. – Nameless, Purcell, Oklahoma Dear Nameless: I’m sure you’ve learned that if you want to see your letter in print, start with, “You probably won’t print this.” I’m happy that your marriage is working out for you and your bride, but yes, I do feel that most 18-year-old girls are not quite ready for all the responsibilities of marriage. Dr. Wallace: I don’t usually write to columnists, but I felt compelled to reply to the father who said he “made his son move out of the house the day after he graduated.” I was very pleased and thankful when I read your answer to this father.

My husband and I always set reasonable rules in our household and we told our children that they were welcome to live with us as long as

Our youngest son stayed at home when he graduated from high school and went into construction. He worked his way up and soon was making good money and could easily have moved out on his own. Instead, he stayed at home and continued to help around the house, doing whatever needed to be done. He enjoyed our family life and also had an active social life with his many friends.

When he was 23, he was killed in an automobile driven by his best friend who was speeding. It was a shock to me and I still grieve and miss him every day.

But I am so very grateful for those few extra years that we had the enjoyment of this wonderful young man in our daily lives.

I hope that so-called father in Indiana thinks twice about making his children move out of the house after they graduate from high school. I agree with you, Dr. Wallace, that our children are not birds. You could agree that all rebids are natural, nonforcing at the two-level and game-forcing at the three-level. (This may make life awkward when responder wishes to invite game.) Or, my preference, you can treat a two-club rebid as NMF. Then, a three-club or three-diamond rebid is to play, showing at least six cards in the minor and only four spades. But a two-diamond rebid indicates a weak hand with five spades and four or more diamonds.

In this deal, if North-South were not using NMF, North would jump-rebid three diamonds, and South would bid three no-trump.

How should South play after West leads the club seven: three, five (a count signal), jack?

Declarer starts with eight top tricks: one spade, one heart, five diamonds and one club (trick one). He can establish extra winners in either pointed suit, but the first trick has made it clear that West has the club ace-queen hovering over South’s king-10.

So, East must be kept off the lead.

Declarer should play a diamond to the dummy, then return a heart to his queen (or 10). When the queen holds, he can claim.
