Annual festival draws community; showcases artists, students’ work

“I like the show,” DeSchepper said. “I like the intimate nature of the event.”

Despite high temperatures near 90 degrees, Barbara Kalina of Batavia was one of many who came to support the festival and the arts.

“I just think this is exciting to have fine arts in Batavia where people can appreciate the talent that other people have,” Kalina said. “I’m a regular and I love the way Batavia is supporting the arts.”

In addition to Water Street Studios, an arts center, and

the Batavia Arts Council, Kalina said the city was making a name for itself.

“We are not just a ‘second city’ to Geneva,” Kalina said.

“We are a destination.”

Also featured were artists’ creations in pastels, oil and acrylic paintings as well as jewelry, pottery, photography and sculpture.

Anthony Slichenmyer of Olney featured lawn metal sculptures in the shapes of sunflowers, bumblebees, dragonflies and turtles.

cluded work by Batavia High School students Isobel Walker and Kantima Kakandee, who made dresses out of unusual materials: Walker made a dress out of coffee filters; and Kakandee made one from white origami, folded, layered and suitable for wearing.

Georgia Krause of Yorkville appreciated the display, which also included a dress made of sunflower and safflower seeds and feathers.

“I admire anybody who can do this precision work,” Krause said.

Sculpture, Volunteer Plaza dedicated in St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – More than 150 people gathered Sunday in downtown St. Charles for one reason: Volunteerism.

The crowd attended the dedication ceremony for the ‘reflections’ sculpture and Volunteer Plaza, both located immediately north of the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The dedication is a culmination of an effort started in 2010 by Dr. C. Alfred Patten to have a piece of public art in the city that honors volunteerism as exemplified by the late Max Hunt and his wife, Doris.

Patten on Sunday recounted when he first saw the sculpture Aug. 4.

“Tears came to my eyes as I realized that a five-year journey was over – a journey that included frustration and disappointment, but was also much fun and very rewarding,” Patten read to the audience. “It’s been a journey I would gladly take again in a heartbeat.”

The sculpture was designed

by Guy Bellaver to meet the Hunt family’s vision of a work of art that captured Max and Doris Hunt’s spirit.

Talks among officials from the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles, the St. Charles Arts Council and the city of St. Charles then led to the formation of Volunteer Plaza, according to the release.

Bellaver on Sunday said he wanted to create the sculpture as part of his Fermilab-inspired Quark series, where the art is all about energy. The sculpture is about the energy found in volunteers, and Bellaver said he wanted residents to see themselves reflected within the city.

Patten thanked Bellaver

and his wife, Elizabeth, for their contributions to the project, in addition to the many financial donors. Several of them were in attendance, including St. Charles resident Andy Hanses.

Hanses said the dedication was especially poignant for him because his late wife, Jill, was a frequent volunteer for various local charities and was a longtime board member, treasurer and president of Anderson Animal Shelter.

“It’s nice to see everybody involved here in the community,” Hanses said.

Donors John and Joan O’Leary said the sculpture was lovely and magnificent.

Joan O’Leary also praised Doris Hunt for her humility and beauty.

Hunt spoke softly but had a powerful message for the dedication’s attendees. At one point she asked them to hold out their hands.

“Each one of you have hands that can reach out and touch the community,” Hunt said. “They need your helping hands.”

ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership’s fourth annual St. Charles Jazz Weekend is set to host free, live Jazz music from Sept. 10 to 13 in downtown St. Charles.

New era’s 1st step is sideways CHICAGO – Inauspicious at best is the most complimentary statement one can say about the debut of the 2015 Bears.

It is not good news that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio got to see his guys for 14 plays without having to play them for more than the one series preferred in a first preseason game.

Castro not thinking about rumors

Never mind where Chase Utley stops next.

As Castro and the Cubs take a much-needed day off Monday after their weekend series on the South Side, the specter of Utley – the Phillies’ six-time All-Star – looms over the playoff hopes of at least five contenders, including the Cubs.

And looms as the next big impact on Castro’s career.

“I don’t even think about that; I don’t even watch the news,” said Castro, the threetime All-Star shortstop, who made his first three big-league starts at second base against the White Sox. Utley, who is said to be back to All-Star form since his recent return from a seasonlong ankle injury, is using his full no-trade rights to mull several possible trade destinations that put him in playoff races, including an offer from the Cubs.

Some reports suggest he prefers a West Coast team closer to his California roots, which gives the Angels and Giants an edge.

Several industry sources also say playing time is a key factor for Utley. That could leave Castro as the odd man out, at least in terms of a chance at regular playing time and possibly when it comes to his Cubs career.

“I can’t put something in my mind that I can’t control,” he said. “I try not to let those kinds of things bother me.

It is almost always a mistake to make too much out of these preseason games, especially the first.

Yes, the football was bad and the Bears’ first units were both sloppy and ineffective.

To pretend there is any silver lining in the Bears’ 27-10 victory would be silly. Almost all that mattered in this game was disappointing.

But these games are about individual performances and guys winning matchups, and along those lines a couple of new stories did develop.

Some in the pressbox commented on Jared Allen’s relative comfort standing up at outside linebacker.

However, Sam Acho was the best Bear on the field.

With Pernell McPhee certainly starting on one side, how long will Allen keep Acho off the field?

Sherrick McManis has had a good camp as a cornerback, not just a special teams ace, and he was the Bears’ best defensive back Thursday night.

Jenkins and Ferguson look like they might belong, but the Bears clearly are dangerously shallow on the defensive line.

Cameron Meredith, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Illinois State, did enough with four catches for 47 yards out of a wideout spot to bear watching for the rest of the preseason at another position where this team is extremely thin.

Finally, why did Jimmy Claussen log 35:44 of playing time while Shane Carden got his first snap with 5:39 remaining?

It appears the Bears already have decided there are only two quarterbacks on the roster.

No, it wasn’t pretty, but it actually was fairly standard fare as these exhibition games go.

CHICAGO – Left-hander Chris Sale isn’t invincible, as his 1-3 stretch just after the AllStar break would attest.

He didn’t get past the sixth inning in two of those starts and gave up double-digit hits in two.

Then there are games like the one Sunday against the Cubs.

“He was fantastic today,” manager Robin Ventura said after the White Sox’ 3-1 victory that salvaged the last game of the series. “I don’t know too many times when he’s been better. He’s had some come close to that, but right from the start of the game when he strikes out the side, you’re feeling pretty good about it. He was darn-near unhittable.”

He didn’t go past the seventh inning because of his pitch count (116).

It wasn’t until there was one out in the sixth that the Cubs got a hit, a clean single by Dexter Fowler. No one else came close.

“I guess the best you can do is try to find a good pitch to hit, run his pitch count up and get him out of the game and go

from there,” Fowler said.

Sale (11-7) struck out 15 Cubs, walked two and hit Anthony Rizzo with a pitch. The hit, one of the walks and Rizzo’s hit by pitch came in the sixth to load the bases, the one threat Sale faced.

But he got Jorge Soler to look at a third strike to end the inning, then came back to strike out the side in the seventh – the third time he struck out the side.

“I think today showed a lot about him, getting in that little jam and really reaching back and getting something extra and then coming back out the next inning,” Ventura said.

“He’s tough when he hits spots – and when he does, it’s impossible,” catcher Tyler Flowers said. “I think he’s always an ace. Even his bad outings are. If you can see his lack of command, lack of execution at times and still how effective he is, he’s just blessed with a heck of an arm and an arsenal.

On his bad days, I still don’t want to face him.”

Sale matched his career high in strikeouts and also surpassed the 200 mark for the third consecutive season.

Dear Abby: I met an amazing man and have been dating him for about three months. It was almost love at first sight. I say “almost” because I was hesitant to get involved since I am his boss.

My problem is, for six years I was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship.

My ex threw me through a wall, leaving me with broken ribs and lacerations on my face. I was constantly called “fat” – especially when I was pregnant.

Now that I’m with this new guy, I feel awkward.

He tells me how pretty I am, and I don’t know how to respond.

It makes me uncomfortable when he says it, and I have no idea why. I have fallen so hard for him, but feel like I hurt his feelings when I don’t respond.

It’s not that I think I’m ugly or anything; I just feel like I am not as pretty as he constantly says I am.

How can I overcome this so it doesn’t become a problem in the future?

In this auction, North-South reached the only game that could be made. Over North’s three diamonds, South had an awkward call. He might have tried four clubs, but that probably would have led to five diamonds, where South would have lost two spades and one club.

Four hearts needed prudent play after West started with three rounds of spades. South carefully discarded his club loser. East’s best defense was a club shift.

Declarer won with his ace, drew two rounds of trumps, cashed two top diamonds, and drew the rest of the trumps, discarding dummy’s last diamond. Then South took the last three tricks with his high diamonds.
