Last of the interns head back to college This past week, a few of our regular columnists have written about school starting and its connection with the end of summer.

That topic also has run through my mind this week, as the last of our five summer interns have completed their time at the Kane County Chronicle.

The final three interns to leave were Eoin Cottrell, Natalie Wickman and Samantha Kummerer. Each did a fantastic job as an intern at our newspaper, and all seemed to enjoy the experience.

“When I began applying for summer internships, I was told that smaller newsrooms would allow interns to write more and be more involved on the team,” wrote Eoin in an email recapping his summer in-

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – The Mill Creek Pool officially became a facility of the Geneva Park District after a real estate closing last month in which the district paid ShoDeen Inc. $1, park officials said.

ShoDeen, a Geneva development and real estate company, built the Mill Creek subdivision.

The transaction included the five-lane, 25-yard lap pool, clubhouse, bathhouse, concession, parking and kiddie pool, said Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte said.

The pool and amenities are valued at $800,000, Lambillotte said, and is a welcome new asset to the park district.

The property is nearly 3.1 acres, including parking, clubhouse, concession, pump room and pool chemical rooms as well as storage.

The clubhouse, at nearly 4,000 square feet including a kitchen, will be available to rent for private parties, she said.

“It’s a really, really generous asset for them to turn it over to us,” Lambillotte said. “It was really a desirable transaction for the park district.”

Discussions began last winter as ShoDeen representatives approached the park district regarding taking over the daily operations and management of the pool, which it did June 7, she said.

The additional pool turned out to be a boon to district residents who were on wait lists for lap swim and other programs scheduled at Sunset Pool, which is at 710 Western Ave., Lambillotte said.

Managing the Mill Creek pool gave the district an opportunity to offer lap swim at 7 a.m. for Sunset’s lap swimmers who were on a

The event not only marks the store’s 25th year in Geneva, but will benefit Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, which will be bringing dogs that are available for adoption, said Agnes Smith, assistant to the shop’s owner.

“We are a dog-friendly shop, and everyone who works here cares about the dogs,” Smith said. “We chose HELP because their mission is a non-shelter rescue organization ... and the fact that they are local.”

So far, HELP is bringing two dogs available for adoption to the event, but Smith said that could change as dogs being fostered will change from week to week.

Employees and customers are expected to bring their pets to the event, she said.

Dog Days of Summer includes a dog costume contest at 11 a.m.

“This really opened up aquatic opportunities we were never able to provide in the past,” Lambillotte said.

“We put it in the summer brochure that we would have swim lessons there in

the morning and evening, too, because there’s no evening time for swim lessons [at Sunset], and working parents were out of luck before.”

Sunset Pool is programmed from 6 to 10:30 a.m. without a break, she said.

“We only have lap swim for an hour in the midday.

It’s very inconvenient and cramped,” Lambillotte said.

“The swim team practices from 6 to 10:30 a.m., swim lessons overlap from 8 to 11 a.m. and then there’s lap swim, exercise walking, water aerobics and toddler swim, then the pool opens at noon,” she said.

Mill Creek Pool will be open through Aug. 24. Sunset Pool will be open through Labor Day, Sept. 1, officials said.

COVER STORY PARADE KICKS OFF ELBURN DAYS Festival continues through the weekend at Lions Park

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Curtis Kruschel grooved to the music Friday night, just south of the train tracks on Route 47 in Elburn. As music pulsed during one dance squad’s routine at the Elburn Days parade, the 20-year-old Maple Park resident was enjoying the scene.

Kruschel and his girlfriend Alicia Williams, a 19-year-old Maple Park resident, said they never miss the Elburn parade, which this year stretched nearly two hours and featured dancers, politicians, emergency vehicles, farm equipment and the Kaneland High School marching band.

“There’s a lot of neat stuff,” Kruschel said.

“The music is the best part,” Williams said.

They were part of a big crowd that lined the streets of downtown Elburn and beyond for the kickoff of the annual Elburn Days festival, which is the signature event of the Elburn Lions Club.

The parade began at 6 p.m. with the national anthem and some emergency vehicles. At about 7:50 p.m., the South Shore Drill Team crossed the tracks to the south side of Elburn, heading toward Lions Park and the end of the parade. Most of the festival takes place at Lions Park, 500 S. Filmore St., Elburn.

The festival was starting up as the parade ended, with carnival rides, Ronald McDonald on the community stage and food vendors, as well as the main stage and the beer garden. It continues through the weekend, with the Elburn Days 5K at 8 a.m. today, as well as truck and tractor pulling, a craft show and the “Elburn Idol” singing competition are among the events planned for the festival.

“I love it,” he said. “I like marching, and I love playing.”

The Kaneland band played “Funkytown,” “Ease On Down the Road” and the school song. Justus said the band plays in several parades each year, and Elburn is one of the most enjoyable, in part because of the large crowd of spectators.

“It makes it a lot more fun,” he said.

Oswego residents Omer and Wanda Horton said they attend the parade each year, in part to watch their grandchildren participate. This year, their grandkids Eric and Michael Layne were in

the parade – one with his football team and one in the band.

They said the parade was enjoyable, even with the trains that delayed the parade five times.

“The train – that’s part of it,” Wanda Horton said.

Omer Horton said they like to go to “country parades.”

Wanda Horton said she enjoys watching the farm equipment.

And they aren’t bothered by the politicians that show up for such events. Omer Horton said he enjoys the opportunity to “touch hands with people running for office.”

But the parade is only the beginning. Kruschel and Williams said they were headed to the festival, and they said there will be plenty of reasons to come back throughout the weekend.

“We’ll be there,” Williams said.

Contract OK’d for ECC support staff

The Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved a threeyear contract agreement with the support staff of the Elgin Community College Association, thus completing negotiations that began in April, according to a news release from the college.

The union’s contract expired June 30.

In a written statement, Board Chairwoman Donna Redmer said the trustees were pleased to have a new agreement with the support staff union.

Members in the lowest salary grades will received an additional increase, bringing them to at least a minimum hourly wage of $10.50, the release states.

“I am pleased we were able to raise the minimum wage for employees at ECC,” ECC President David Sam said in a

written statement.

“Our support staff union members are a vital part of providing a world-class educational experience for our students.”

Members of the support staff union work in a variety of positions in numerous departments on campus, including student life, athletics, IT and communications, executive director of communications Jeff Julian said in an email.

He noted positions include coordinators, specialists, custodians and food service workers.

Changes in payment for health and dental insurance also are planned so that union members will take on a greater share of the cost of their coverage, according to the re-

lease.

They reportedly will pay 11 percent of the cost in year one, 12 percent in year two and 13 percent in year three. Under their previous three-year contract, they contributed 5 percent, 7.5 percent and 10 percent of the expense.

For family coverage, the release states, the contribution rate will increase to 21 percent in the second year and 22 percent in the third year. The current rate is 20 percent.

The increase in compensation will cost ECC $2.92 million over the three-year period, according to the release.

The college’s total budget is $137 million for fiscal 2014.

ECC reports the complete agreement will be available at www.elgin.edu.

It will expire June 30, 2017.

friend and one of Montana’s larger than life members of America’s greatest generation has passed away peacefully from advanced dementia on August 11, in Spokane, Washington while surrounded by his family. Dr. John Logan Rogers was born March 5th 1923, at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, Montana.

He was preceded in death by his wife MaryBelle, his brother Kenneth and parents Wilbur L. and Catherine J. Rogers.

Survivors include his son, John Logan Rogers II, of Spokane, WA, his son’s wife, Judy Long Rogers, and his only grandson and namesake, John “Logan” Rogers III. Dr. Rogers is also survived by his brother Kenneth L. Rogers’ nine children (his nieces and nephews) as well as many “shirt tail relatives” as he would refer to them and with whom he endeavored to remain in touch.

“Logan” as he was known growing up in Montana, was his mother’s maiden name and was chosen for him to preserve it as there were no surviving children to carry the family name. The Great Depression instilled his tenacity and competitive nature, which served him well as an athlete and in his career. He also was born with a wanderlust which was manifested by the necessity of keeping him harnessed to the backyard clothes line.

While in St. Charles, “Doc Rogers” (as he was known East of the Mississippi) was Delnor Hospital Medical Staff President, “delivered lots of babies,” was active with the Board of Abdominal Surgeons, Academy of Family Physicians, volunteered as a physician on the sidelines of the Fighting Saints high school football games and spearheaded the effort to light the field, became a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, was a trustee for St. Dominic College, a member of the Abbot Marmion Society, enjoyed bird hunting, countless trips to Chicago and its many sports offerings, helped recruit Olympian and Sullivan Award recipient Rick Wolhuter to Notre Dame and was a football season ticket holder for over 30 years.

Also, while still living in St. Charles he purchased a dormant KOA franchise and property on the East Shore of Montana’s Flathead Lake, two miles from where he learned to swim. Thus, began the family’s annual EastWest migration, operating the campground during the summer months. During this time he had also purchased and operated orchards which produced Montana’s famous Flathead Cherries.

This availed him to countless visits from friends and family arriving to enjoy “the largest freshwater lake West of the Mississippi,” and he shared many late summer hours with his son, fly-fishing Montana’s Swan River and numerous other activities in the Bigfork Area.

He departed his Illinois medical practice and became the Team Physician for the University of Idaho Football Vandals and worked in Student Health, then moved to Kalispell to continue in Family Practice, still spending time on the sidelines with the

Flathead Football Braves, meanwhile completing the Grandview Townhome project near Kalispell Regional Hospital and eventually filled in as needed around the country as a Locum Tenens practitioner, maintaining licenses in numerous states and was a lifetime Member of the Montana Medical Association.

In his eventual retirement, he became very active with the Montana Ambassadors, receiving the Ambassador or the Year award from Montana Governor Marc Racicot. He was also recognized as a distinguished Golden Jubilarian Alumni from Carroll College and active with the Montana Republicans.

He left Montana moving to Spokane, Washington in order to watch his beloved grandson grow up and be near his daughter in law and son, eventually losing his wife of 54 years, MaryBelle, the yin to his yang, from whom he had been separated far too long.

Logan Rogers, single handedly helped to perpetuate the fact that the six degrees of separation are only two or three degrees in the State of Montana. He truly never met a stranger and continued to be excited about life in general, particularly if it involved the sport of football, especially Notre Dame. A kind and loving brother, husband, father, uncle, father in law, grandfather, friend to many, devout in his Roman Catholic faith, celebrant of his Irish ancestry and a great man. You would likely find his picture in the dictionary under the word “gregarious.”

He will be missed . . .

David Francis Allen, 89, originally from the St. Charles area passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014, in Cave Creek, Arizona.

He was born June 8, 1925, in Geneva, IL. He was the son of Charles and Anne Allen.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Bob and twin sister Phyllis. His wife of 55 years passed away in September of 2012.

He is survived by his brother Gordon; His children, Phyllis (late Steve) Holt, Mark (Vivian) Wissing, Rick (Sandy) Allen, Sarah (Wayne) Anderson, Georgia (Steve) Cento, Dan (Gloria) Allen; His grandchildren, Rachael, Nicole, Dan, Mike, Andrea, Nick, Jake, Jennifer and Katherine and 6 great grandchildren.

David served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946.

He was trained as a Belly Gunner.

He worked for Hawley Products, for 30 years, as a Technical Sales Service Manager. After retiring he continued to work as a Manufacturer’s Rep until the age of 75.

The greatest gift to his family was his ability to find the humor in all of life’s situation. David had people laughing right up to the end!

A Memorial service to celebrate his life will take place later in the month and will be attended by immediate family.

Enlisting in the Navy, he was chosen to attend the V12 Officer Training Program on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, where he received his commission and in so doing achieved alumni status. Deployed to the Pacific on the USS Muliphen, Logan was to receive battle ribbons for Iwo Jima, Saipan and Okinawa before his honorable discharge.

This, in spite of spending the eve of VJ Day confined to quarters for commandeering a boat to see his high school girlfriend’s brother on an adjacent ship.

Returning to civilian life as a student, his talents on the gridiron lead him to scholarship offers from the Universities of Wisconsin and Colorado. However, his uncle and mentor Dr. Patrick E. Logan, who practiced over 50 years in Montana, tersely informed the coaches by mail that his nephew, Logan, was going to pursue medicine rather than football, using his GI benefit to attend Carroll College in Helena Montana, where they produced “priests, doctors and scholars.”

While at Carroll he was student body president and a minority “kid from Great Falls” with the majority attending from Butte or Anaconda.

His infamous Carroll exploits included requesting that ties be worn, much to the chagrin of his Silver Bow and Deer Lodge County classmates, as well as confirming by lab test that “the milk the German Nuns were serving had been watered down.”

He matriculated with a degree in microbiology, then went on to Creighton University College of Medicine, where he spent time working in the Boy’s Town infirmary and traveled with their football team, following his passion for Sports Medicine.

10 Kaneland board plans

meeting to discuss superintendent position

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – As the search for a new superintendent continues, the Kaneland School District 302 Board has planned a special meeting for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the district office at 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park, on the campus of Kaneland High School.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler is leaving the district to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200 on Sept. 2. According to a news release, the board is considering options to “fulfill both the immediate needs of the district and ensure its long-term success.”

“For that reason, the board

is seeking an interim superintendent to temporarily fill the vacancy and will begin the search for a permanent replacement in the fall.”

Earlier this month, the school board voted, 4-2, to accept Schuler’s resignation.

Board President Cheryl Krauspe indicated that “the selection of a superintendent for the Kaneland district is the most significant decision that our school board can make,” according to the release.

“In order to hire the best fit for our district, the process should be very careful, thoughtful and thorough hard work, with input from all segments of the educational community and its stakeholders,” Krauspe said, according to the release.

Insulted at my rude intrusion, Jimmy leaped away and sauntered – as only cats can – -back to his spot by the door.

Meanwhile, I headed for the clay pot on the kitchen counter. I scanned the surface of the mulch for signs of exit holes and saw none.

Phew!

With one disaster averted, I wasn’t about to risk another. So into a glass aquarium the plant pot went. I tipped it on its side, so that the mulch spilled out a bit, and misted the surface again to preserve the lightly moist environment in the “nursery.”

As the calendar pages flipped from May to June, I began to wonder if maybe the babies were of a sort that have a multiple-year life cycle. Then, around June 10, I saw it. Or him, as I realized later. A large beetle, about the size of a queen-size olive, was poking its way around the bottom of the aquarium.

Now, I don’t want to sound haughty or anything, but

this was one beautiful beetle.

Orangish, almost terracotta on top, it had a dark head and legs that – gasp – shined an iridescent green when the sunlight hit them. Widely spaced spots dotted the edges of his elytra, or forewings – the part we think of as a beetle’s “shell.”

As I admired the stunning creature before me, I realized that it was unlike any beetle I’d ever seen. It most certainly was not Osmoderma, the genus I’d guessed when I first adopted the grubs.

So off to BugGuide.net I went, and used the website’s “Browse” feature to quickly flip through North American scarab beetle groups.

Clicking through the various options, it didn’t take long to arrive at genus Pelidnota, and then species punctata – a critter otherwise known as the grapevine beetle.

Although related to other beetles with less-than-stellar reputations, adult P. punctata generally are not found

in numbers large enough to cause damage to their host plant, which is – go figure – Vitis spp., or grapevines. The beetles also will munch on Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), according to other references.

Eggs are laid in rotting wood of various hardwood trees, including maples, hackberries, walnuts, apples, oaks and elms. When the larvae emerge, they begin feeding on the dead wood, hastening the decomposition process and returning all the good things that once made that tree back into soil, from which new trees can grow.

As more and more grapevine beetles began emerging from the mulch in my kitchen, I noticed that not all were orange. Some were lighter, almost khaki, in color, and larger, too. These were the females.

Two months into this grub-incubation experiment, I’ve got about two dozen beetles living in the large aquarium in my kitchen.

Males outnumber females roughly 2-to-1. Each day I feed them fresh grape leaves, clipped from the wild vines that encircle my yard. And each night the beetles emerge to feed and carry on certain other necessary activities.

I’m hopeful the females will soon start laying eggs in the ample mulch that still forms the substrate in the tank and that, when they hatch, the cycle will start anew. I’d like the chance to once again become familiar with the features that identify the grubs – this time knowing what the result will be.

They may not be tall like their mother, or have their father’s eyes, but these babies will nonetheless carry on the traits of the generations before them: Hardworking decomposers, carrying on the important business of nutrient recycling.

What’s not to love?

Ah, babies. Dontcha just love ’em?

Over the course of a year, hundreds of babies, and their parents (or grandparents), come through the doors at Hickory Knolls. We try, as often as possible, to engage the adults in conversation about their little darlings: What’s his/her name? How old?

Does she/he have a favorite animal?

Invariably over the course of these chats, we hear how it is that the wee one resembles one parent (or grandparent) or the other: “She’s going to be tall, just like her mother.”

“She has her daddy’s eyes.”

“He’s got red hair, just like my dad did.”

But then there are those tots who, frankly, defy comparison. Like the bucket of babies I was given by my friend Joan.

Some of you may remember, a few months ago Joan – as in Joan Kramer, the wizard behind the beauty in the Native Plant Garden at the Pottawatomie Community Center – was preparing for spring by spreading hardwood mulch over the plant beds she’d raked. But her seasonal ritual was interrupted when she came across not one or two, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 or so plump, juicy-looking grubs.

The whole operation ground to a halt while she shoveled and scraped the youngsters out of the mulch pile and placed them, one scoop at a time, into a coffee can. Later on, they were transferred into a bucket – a bucket I truly was overjoyed to receive.

The only question was, “Whose babies are these?”

The thing about grubs (and caterpillars, maggots and other immature insects, or larvae) is that they bear little resemblance to either Mom or Dad. With grubs, a.k.a. baby scarab beetles, only a few bits of their “baby parts” remain after they pupate and become adults.

change form, heads change shape, wings sprout ...

Now, some entomologists – especially coleopterists, those dedicated folks that specialize in beetles – can look at a grub’s anal slit, its rastral pattern (the arrangement of tiny spines or hairs on the last abdominal segment) and maybe a few other characteristics and, boom, identify it to genus or species.

The rest of us aren’t so lucky. We need to be a little more patient, and wait until the larvae mature and pupate – a period of time that can take weeks, months or even years, depending on species.

Luckily, in the case of these grubs, no one was in a huge hurry to find out exactly what they were.

What’s more, I had a spare clay flower pot (thanks Mom and Dad!) and some space on my kitchen counter to let the process play out in its own due time.

(Incidentally, the tendency to allow beetles to pupate on the kitchen counter is something I did not inherit from either of my dear, tolerant parents.)

The month of April passed uneventfully. I watered the mulch occasionally, keeping the grubs’ environment just barely moist, and watched for escapees (of which, thankfully there were none).

May was quiet, too although as the month progressed, I noticed more and more other types of beetles (most likely “May” beetles, or chafers) coming to the porch light at night. Occasionally, one or more of these guys would sneak in when I’d open that door, much to the delight of my cat Jimmy.

One evening though, as I listened to him crunch on yet another six-legged morsel just inside the back door, I had a horrifying thought.

“What if he’s eating MY beetles?”

A quick sprint around the room and a brief but intense skirmish later, I had Jimmy in my arms and my fingers in his mouth, trying to salvage what I could of his late-night snack. Alas, he had just swallowed the last bits of the crunchy prey.

Police: St. Charles man tried to pin injuries on robbery

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The 27-year-old man charged with aggravated battery this week initially claimed he was the victim of an attempted robbery, according to a St. Charles police report.

At about 8:20 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to the 100 block of North 15th Street in St. Charles, where a man reportedly was crawling on the ground, bleeding.

Officers began searching the area and were notified by radio of a subject – identified as Marcos Antonio Perez-Ve- Marcos lasco – stag- Antonio gering across Perez-Velasco the rear parking lot of a restaurant in the 1600 block of West Main Street, which is closer to North 17th Street, police reported.

Perez-Velasco reportedly had blood on his face and in his right ear, as well as a scuff mark on his forehead, a bite mark on a forearm and marks and scratches on his knuckles.

It looked as if he had been lying on the ground, as his lower pant legs were wet and dirty, and dirt was on his shirt, police said.

He claimed two men tried to rob him, and he had gotten

into a fight near Rookies, 1545 W. Main St., police said.

As police officers and firefighters tried to find more people involved, authorities reportedly took Perez-Velasco to the police department.

There, Perez-Velasco refused medical treatment and described the attempted robbery in more detail, police reported. The men wanted money, he reportedly told police, but he refused and a fight ensued.

Police reportedly asked Perez-Velasco why he was on North 17th Street if the fight happened elsewhere. He said the men went in that direction, and he followed them to see where they lived, police reported.

Police later determined Perez-Velasco’s injuries were caused during an altercation with his former roommate, a 54-year-old man, Deputy Chief Dave Kintz said.

He said the fight took place in an overgrown grassy area west of North 15th Street north of West Main Street in St. Charles. Authorities believe the argument was a carryover from a dispute the men had years ago, he said.

Police found the victim in an apartment on North 15th Street with cuts on his face, as well as bite marks on his body.

Perez-Velasco, of the 1800 block of Covington Court, St. Charles, has been charged with aggravated battery to cause great bodily harm, a felony.

• A member of the St. Charles Sportsman’s Club, 44W471 Keslinger Road, Elburn, reported Saturday, Aug. 9, that his shotgun

valued at $2,650 was missing from the lodge’s gun rack, and a $3,500 shotgun was in its place.

“The numbers do not lie,” Chief Dan Hoffman said in the release. “To help prevent fatalities on Illinois

roadways, we are stepping up our late-night enforcement efforts, making sure impaired drivers are off the road and motorists are buckled up.”

Statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that midnight to 3 a.m. is the deadliest time on Illinois roads, police said.

That time frame also has

the highest percentage of alcohol involvement and the lowest use of occupant restraints, police said.

Campton Hills police provided these tips to help avoid a crash or arrest for impaired driving: • Designate a sober driver and give that person your keys.

• Use a taxi, mass transit or call a sober friend or relative to drive you home.

• Promptly report im-

paired drivers to law enforcement.

• Wear your seat belt and make sure all passengers are buckled up.

The extra enforcement is funded by federal traffic safety funds through IDOT’s Division of Transportation Safety.

“If you drive impaired or unbuckled at night, we will find you and arrest you or give you a ticket,” Hoffman said.

Batavia police car involved in crash with minivan

are not releasing details until their internal investigation is completed.

Detective Kevin Britz said the accident involving a 2012 Ford Crown Victoria occurred at 2:12 p.m. Tuesday on Ran-

dall Road, south of Mill Creek Drive and north of Heritage Drive. Britz said information – such as the name of the officer; the name of the minivan driver; which driver, if any, was at fault; whether tickets were

issued; and whether the police car was totaled – would not be released until an internal investigation is completed.

In 2012, at least three officers were involved in two police car crashes in Batavia.

Voice of the residents will be heard If those who reside within the Batavia School District 101 boundaries support the potential borrowing of up to $15 million to fund capital improvements in the district, they’ll have their chance to voice their approval.

The board on Tuesday voted to put the request on the ballot for the Nov. 4 election. The question includes potential improvements to athletic fields, and there are strong feelings on both sides of the issue. There is a proposed master plan to improve the high school athletic fields, including installation of a synthetic turf field for the defending state champion Batavia football team, as well as plans that would increase bleacher seating, and improve the press box, scoreboard and stadium lighting.

Now, those who are passionate about the issue know they have a few months to get the word out about their argument and let people know why they should or should not support it.

Kris Monn, the District 101 assistant superintendent for finance, said the proposal would not result in a tax increase, but some residents might be skeptical. The time remaining before the referendum is put forth provides district officials an opportunity

to spell out the plan and provide details, and it allows residents time to get answers about whether their taxes would increase.

Also this past week, St. Charles School District 303 Board members narrowly approved the fiscal 201415 district budget, with total expenditures of $190 million. The vote was, 4-3, in favor of the budget.

Those who voted against the budget said they were concerned taxpayers cannot continue to endure the anticipated increase in tax rates that would result from a higher budget than last year. In fact, the approved budget represents an increase of about $4 million from fiscal 2013-14.

At both districts, the voice of the residents should be heard. In Batavia, that opportunity will come at the polls in November, when voters will decide the fate of the referendum.

In St. Charles, it’s important that some board members indicated that they had taken the concerns of taxpayers into consideration. The opinions of all of those affected should be included in the decision-making process.

Those on both sides of the issue should pay attention to how board members voted when it is time for the next school district elections.

More masks, less drugs to contain Ebola BLOOMBERG NEWS The question of how to fairly distribute scarce doses of experimental Ebola treatments is capturing the world’s attention. Yet the fate of the epidemic doesn’t rest on getting these expensive and unproven drugs to the afflicted African countries. What medical teams there need most are protective masks, goggles, gloves, gowns and boots.

This gear enables doctors and nurses to care for Ebola patients without risking their own lives by coming in contact with the virus in patients’ vomit, blood and feces. The equipment is in such short supply in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone that, for lack of it, medical workers have fallen

ill. About 15 percent of Ebola deaths in Liberia are of doctors and nurses, and 10 percent of those in Sierra Leone are hospital workers.

This exacerbates the shortage of care providers to contain the outbreak, and deters additional helpers from joining the effort. Outside organizations, including Doctors Without Borders, the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Defense Department have sent reinforcements, but they, too, are overwhelmed.

With the epidemic still expanding, thousands more volunteers must be recruited – ideally from countries in east and central Africa. Caregivers from these countries already

have Ebola experience; they know how to identify and isolate the infected, trace their contacts and care for the sick.

Such care can keep more than 40 percent of sufferers alive, which in turn encourages others with symptoms to go into isolation.

In setting these priorities, though, public health officials will have to keep in mind that even if, against the odds, the treatments work, they cannot be produced in quantity fast enough to significantly slow the epidemic.

Yet Ebola can be defeated without them, given enough trained medical workers diligently tracking cases and caring for the ill – medical workers who are equipped to do the job.

Taxes are too high I am calling in regard to the Kane County property taxes.

When is Kane County going to wake up and realize they cannot continue to tax people out of their homes in order to fulfill everybody’s wish list and pensions.

In the Thornwood South Elgin area ... our assessments are going down.

Yet every year, we get our taxes raised because we are paying for everyone’s hand in our pocket – to the park district, the special funds, everyone’s pensions and last, but not least, District 303’s astronomical wish list and property tax increases every year.

It’s got to stop. If people want their pensions, they can pay into them themselves. The school district needs to live within its budget. We have some of the highest property taxes in the suburbs. It is disgusting.

If it keeps up, Kane County isn’t going to have anyone to tax anymore. We’re all going to have to move out of the area. There has to come a point where it stops and they live within a budget, just like everybody else does. The economy and the people can’t take this any longer.

Review your options before raising taxes Batavia schools, another tax increase! The horse (taxpayers) pulling your wagon is getting weak knees.

Suggestion: Beyond educational excellence, have you reviewed your operational excellence, reviewed and renegotiated all service agreements, maintenance procurement programs, and asked, what can be eliminated?

What can be negotiated?

Please do due diligence before increasing taxes.

Woman reports being robbed on Route 25

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A case of mistaken identity led to a robbery on Route 25 early this month, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

A woman reportedly told police that at about 3 p.m.

Aug. 5 she was driving south on Route 25 toward St. Charles when she saw a pedestrian she thought she knew. She pulled over to pick him up, but when the man opened the passenger side door she realized she didn’t know him, told him that and apologized for stopping, police reported.

The man, however, reportedly grabbed her purse from the passenger seat and – threatening her – told her not to report the incident.

He was holding a 6-inch silver steak knife in his right hand, the woman reportedly told police. When he finished talking, the man took her purse and she left the area, police said.

She reported the incident Tuesday, a week later.

“She didn’t contact [Kane County Sheriff’s Office] sooner about the incident because she has been scared,” police reported.

The woman said the robbery happened in a wooded area south of Army Trail Road, police reported. She reportedly could not remember identifying features about the man or his clothing.

Her purse will cost about $40 to replace, police said. Its contents were redacted from the report.

Kaneland’s Jakob Sanders played football his freshman year at DeKalb, then switched to golf as a sophomore before transferring to Kaneland last year.

He’s a senior now, but from a golf experience standpoint, that’s misleading.

Sanders golfed minimally growing up, playing the occasional round with his dad, Marty, former DeKalb head football coach and a volunteer football assistant coach at Kaneland last year.

Now that he’s dedicated himself to the sport, Sanders’ year-to-year improvement is drastic.

“Whenever I tell people I’ve only been golfing for like two years, they always say ‘Well that means you have a lot of room for improvement – you can still change your swing,’ ” Sanders said. “It’s easier to learn. A lot of these guys are trying to just shave off one or two strokes and I’m trying to shave off 10.”

Kaneland coach Mark Meyer identified Sanders as one of the team’s most-improved golfers this fall.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Jake Hed kind of ended up as our top two, but definitely not as certain as it was last year where we knew [Yonkovich and Kuhar] were going to be our two guys we could count on every single time to count their scores and lead the way.”

Denton, a senior, also made substantial summer progress.

He said he holed out a pair of

chips from about 100 yards out during rounds at Sycamore Golf Club, requiring lucky rolls, perhaps, but also indicative of a targeted area of improvement.

“I struggled with [chipping] last season but I’ve been practicing it quite a bit so now it’s one of my strong suits,” said Denton, who is turning his attention to driving accuracy as the next phase of his game in need of troubleshooting.

Sanders, meanwhile, still gets his football fix vicariously through his brother, sophomore Reid Sanders, who plays wide receiver and cornerback.

Regarding football, Sanders said “I miss it a little bit but I know for sure golf is what I love to do.”

“I liked football but it’s not something I loved doing,” Sanders said. “As soon as I started golfing, that really turned into something I really loved doing.”

He said he played about four rounds a week during the summer – often at Hughes Creek in Elburn – and supplemented those with trips to the driving range. His typical scores have dipped into the 80s, and Sanders said shooting below 85 has become realistic most times out.

“Last year it’d probably be three-quarters of the time I’d hit it good, and the other quarter I wouldn’t be so good,” Sanders said. “Now there’s probably one or two times in the whole round where it’s not very good, striking-wise with my approach or my chipping or whatever.”

The Knights are counting on Sanders to be a key part of the mix with a less established hierarchy at the top of this year’s lineup.

Tri-Cities Soccer Association recently names Mark Jones as its new Youth Academy Director. He will specialize in mentoring youth soccer players from ages 5 to 9, a big change and more family-friendly gig for the native Californian, who has college coaching experience at his alma mater, Cal Poly, and more recently at Northern Illinois. Jones also spent time working on a project in Brazil with Steve Sampson, former coach of the U.S. men’s national team and the Los Angeles Galaxy. In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, Jones discusses his soccer background and how he will apply it to working with local youth players. The following is an edited transcript:

What brings you to Tri-Cities?

I was recently with NIU, had a great experience over there and learned a bit of a different style of soccer than I was used to over in California, so it opened up some new avenues, new coaching techniques as well as made me more well-rounded, but I realized through all that my true love was development of players, getting players to that level and trying to make our youth a little bit stronger since that’s a little bit of a concern of our country, that we’re a little bit behind.

What was that year at NIU like?

Well, it was a tough season from a results standpoint. It was full of ups and downs. We had a little bit of lack of leadership through the season but they are rebounding. We did a lot of good recruiting in the offseason so this year should prove to be a little bit better.

How would you characterize the mission of the Youth Academy?

What was it like working under Steve Sampson?

Steve Sampson, he’s a legend. I can’t say enough good things about him. Aside from him being a phenomenal coach, he’s an exceptional businessman and people person, manager.

He’s got a lot of different things he’s doing on the side as a consultant to so many different clubs, just a ton of knowledge to be gained from him, and being under him for the better part of four years really helped [develop] me … He took me down to Brazil and we took a group of American kids down to Brazil and trained down there and had a pretty good experience with that, an enlightening experience with him and his staff at Global Sports Institute.

Coming from California, let’s be real here, do people look down on soccer in the Midwest?

Their impression of soccer in the Midwest is very hard-working, blue collar, less tactical in its design.

They would consider it not so beautiful to watch, more just driven for results of how to win the game. That’s the impression they have, but being here, I don’t think that’s the reality, but definitely some of that holds true. … There are

It’s kind of an all-encompassing thing.

There are people who want to learn a lot about soccer and they don’t have an avenue to do it, and that’s kind of the [void] we’re trying to fill. … I think kids can absorb a ton of information, and to not give it to them when they’re capable of learning it is a disservice.

What are the most important fundamentals for that age group to focus on?

The overwhelming one is definitely individual ability with the ball. It’s hard to add tactics and strategy if players can’t perform the tactic or strategy you’re implementing.

I always look at is a well-written novel where each chapter tells a story or teaches a concept, and they build off each other. You can’t just start a book and open to chapter 10 … kind of taking that approach, kids who are at chapter one, starting at chapter one and making sure it’s very well learned before moving on.

Hawks’ top pick from 2010 draft a free agent

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com As expected, Kevin Hayes, the Blackhawks’ first-round draft pick in 2010, did not sign with the team on Friday, making him an unrestricted free agent as of midnight.

The Hawks will receive the 54th pick in the 2015 NHL draft as compensation.

“We offered Kevin what we believed was a generous and fair contract,” Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a release. “Unfortunately, he felt it was in his best interests to become a free agent. We are looking forward to the compensatory draft pick we are receiving and are focused on the excitement surrounding the start of training camp next month.”

Hayes, a 6-foot-3-inch, 210-pound power forward, had 27 goals and 38 assists as a senior at Boston College this past season, playing on the best line in college hockey with Johnny Gaudreau and Bill Arnold, both of whom were signed by the Calgary Flames.

Neither he nor his agent, Bob Murray, have explicitly said why Hayes didn’t want to sign with the Hawks, but there are several possible reasons.

The most obvious is the simple fact that Hayes is a right winger, and with Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane, Ben Smith and Kris Versteeg, among others, in his way, there’s no clear path to the NHL for Hayes, who, at 22 years old, is considered NHL ready.

Ruggles was invited back by the ACB professional league in Spain to participate in the league’s 3-point shooting exhibition Sept. 27 in Vitoria, Spain. Last year as the youngest competitor in the field, Ruggles handled the pressure and deeper 3-point line with aplomb, beating numerous professional sharpshooters to win the contest.

The Ruggles family is still hopeful Josh can participate in this year’s Spain event, depending on how quickly he heals. Ruggles announced this summer that he is transferring from Wheaton Academy to Wheaton Warrenville South for his senior year.

Batavia girls volleyball academics honored: Last year’s Batavia girls volleyball team recently was awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association Academic All-American Award. The 2013 Bulldogs recorded a team GPA of 3.97, “one of our best ever,” according to longtime Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne, who added that the Bulldogs have nabbed the distinction in 20 of the 22 years it has been awarded.

Wheaton Academy is soon to unveil its turf field at newly named Performance Trust Field, and not a school year too soon, in athletic director Dave Underwood’s estimation.

“This past spring for the first time lacrosse played on the same field we played girls soccer on, and as you would expect by May, it was just kind of trashed and it was not a good field,” Underwood said.

“We had some coaches who have been longtime coaches who have been familiar with our programs asking ‘What happened to your field? It’s brutal.’ ” Wheaton Academy’s facility needs have changed drastically during the past five to 10 years as the school re-launched football and lacrosse has become increasingly popular.

The Warriors played their football home games at Wheaton College in recent years, while other sports struggled with the worn-down grass surface. Underwood said the girls soccer team played only four home games in spring 2013 because field conditions forced the Warriors to shift several matches to alternate locations.

“For a long time, we had a nice grass field and we took great care of it and that was great, and then as we’ve added more and more sports, namely football’s been added the last seven, eight years now, lacrosse that’s been added … football needs to have their own facility on campus,” Underwood said.

Wheaton Academy’s season-opener Aug. 29 against Walther Christian will be the first Friday night football game on campus in school history, Underwood said. A ceremony will honor key donors, including a lead gift from Rich and Carrie Berg of Performance Trust Capital Partners that helped make the project of more than $1 million possible.

The turf installation was completed on schedule, with only a few complementary touches still to be completed.

Underwood said the school was able to go 120 by 70 yards, making for a wide field that will benefit multiple sports.

“The big reason is it’s not in the middle of a track and so we

Cougars manager reflects on what might have been if he chose football

Twenty years and two months after the White Sox selected him in the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Mark Johnson briefly pondered “what if.”

What if the well-regarded high school catcher out of Warner Robins, Georgia also acted on his stock as a budding prep quarterback?

The Cougars manager had NCAA Division I offers from both sports on the table in June 1994, yet never really felt conflicted.

With football season encroaching on baseball’s stretch run, prompting a recent reflection simply felt right.

“Looking back, if I had it to do over again, I would have probably went and signed with somebody for both [sports in college],” Johnson said. “But I knew I wasn’t going to go to college and I knew I was going to sign [with the White Sox]. I was pretty adamant about that with scouts, saying I want to play. I want to go get my career started.

So I think that football just fell on the back-burner. Not that I didn’t love to play or anything. I do miss it.”

Football is certainly not going anywhere. Before long, the clubhouse TV figures to shuttle between baseball games and football season previews, with some players’ chatter trending toward their fantasy football teams, too.

Even with a revolving door of roster moves, pitching coach David Rosario never plays guessing games. To research anyone shining at Short-A Boise or scuffling at Advanced-A Daytona would be a disservice to his own staff, especially one with so many new faces of late.

“In baseball, there’s so many things that happen on a daily basis, so I just focus in on the guys that I’ve got, and basically I’ve got a new bullpen right now,” Rosario said. “So working with them, working to try to help somebody every single day.

And hopefully, these next 20 days will help prepare them for what is coming up, and that’s the playoffs.

That is the ultimate goal, and that’s what we’re preparing for.”

The Cougars clinched the first-half Western Division title in June and have been resting some of their top-of-the-rotation starters for brief stretches to keep them from hitting season innings limits.

A handful of Cougars reminisce about their high school days, but obviously didn’t revere football enough considering where they are now.

“Football’s a great sport, you know. It really helps build the toughness, not only physically, but mentally,” Johnson said. “So when you see two-sport guys, they’re usually a different kind of breed. Having played that

type of team sport, I think kids really benefit from it.”

Second baseman Daniel Lockhart, a fellow Georgian, agrees with the benefits of cross-training even as he grew up around the dawn of sport specialization.

Lockhart played “pretty much strictly baseball” from high school onward, balancing soccer and basketball for a few years before that. While acknowledging football’s influence of the South is undeniable, Lockhart still offers a different thought about athletes as products of their environments.

“So it’s definitely gotten pretty big, and guys are kind of starting to find their one sport and kind of stick with it.”

Twenty years and two months ago, Johnson happily did just that.

ries to date for -7 yards. Forte is going to be fine and, if he stays healthy, we can count on another 1,250 rushing yards minimum and another Pro Bowl trip.

The Bears’ offensive line played without Kyle Long, Jordan Mills and Eben Britton against the Eagles and without Mills and Britton again against the Jaguars.

Marc Trestman talked the day after the Jaguars game about why ground games can struggle in the preseason.

“I don’t think it’s structure.

It’s not, not having the players to get it done. It can be a 6-inch step some time, or a hand placement some time, or one guy not doing his job. That’s all it takes in the running game to give a defensive player a gap to make a play.”

True enough, but here’s another general impression.

While I think we all agree the Bears are lucky to have Forte, we all also know how difficult it is for a running back to stay healthy for 16 games.

It is not too early to be concerned over how little progress the Bears have made finding

In a rare moment of candor for any NFL head coach, Trestman did acknowledge that while Shaun Draughn, Michael Ford, Ka’Deem Carey, Senorise Perry and Jordan Lynch are all competing for that spot, he’s already boiled his options down to just two of them.

Draughn is the only back in camp besides Forte with actual NFL rushing experience.

“Obviously, he’s involved in this competition, right now, as I said, I think him and Ka’Deem are in a competition for who will be the second guy or the next guy to go in, at least early on in the season, if we go that way,” Trestman said.

“I think both guys show that they’re up to it. We’ve got two more games to go.”

For my last general impression, I have to tell you I think the Bears have been trying to give the job to Carey since the

moment they drafted him.

How else do you explain his 23 carries in two games compared to 25 carries for Draughn (4), Perry (9), Ford (5) and Lynch (7) combined?

“You go into it and say, you want to get a guy, six carries or seven carries, and then what happens, universally, is the game starts becoming the most important thing as you get into the third and fourth quarter,” Trestman said. “You’re trying to call plays that you think can help you win the game, and you lose track of the individual points of emphasis to see

certain players.”

I’m sure that’s true to a point, but here’s my final fact.

Carey’s 23 carries for 59 yards, an average of 2.6 yards per carry against nothing but second-, third- and fourth-stringers isn’t good enough.

And when you take out that 15-yard free sprint, 22 carries for 44 yards, an average of 2.0 yards per carry is downright disconcerting.

As we get to know the 2014 Chicago Bears there are general impressions and then there are facts.

Here is a fact. Through two preseason games, the Bears have run the ball from scrimmage 58 times for 171 yards, an average of 2.9 yards per carry.

Here is another fact. If you eliminate a 16-yard scramble from Jimmy Clausen, and a 15-yard run by Ka’Deem Carey during which the Jaguars’ defense opened a lane wide enough for Carey to drag Halas Hall through the hole alongside him, the truer picture of the run game to date is 56 runs for 140 yards for a 2.5 yard per carry average.

One more fact, if these games were real the Bears would have a big problem.

Now here’s my general impression. As both head coach Marc Trestman and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer have told us several times in the past 10 days or so, the running game always takes a little longer than the rest of the offense to come around and it’s way too early to circle the wagons.

Problems emerge in backfield

Wildcats waiting in the wings Trio from Eclipse Select club headed to Northwestern KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE CHICAGO – Eclipse Select Soccer Club always has had its share of ties with Northwestern’s program, but the 2015 campaign will be an interesting one to watch for a variety of reasons.

The Big Ten squad has been in a transition mode with the arrivals of former Wisconsin-Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan and assistant David Nikolic after the Wildcats’ 2011 season. When Eclipse Select’s U-17 Elite Clubs National League trio of Hannah Davison, Aspyn Repp and Kayla Sharples steps into the program, that NU team will be completely branded by this coaching tandem.

“They have definitely changed a lot with the program,” said Davison, the Geneva native who was the first of this Eclipse Select trio to commit to Northwestern early in 2013. “It will be a unique situation when we join the 2015 class, because when we come in, all four years – freshman, sophomore, junior and senior – will be recruited by Michael and David. Hopefully, we can be at the top of our division when we all get there.”

The fact that all three current teammates could play a significant role together postEclipse Select makes this even more unique.

“We’re all very excited to be able to enter something like this together, because it can be nerve-wracking to make a transition like that,” Davison said.

“Now, I have two of my friends there as we head to college, and we have that team chemistry, foundation and background that we will benefit from.”

Davison began her search early on by mentioning Northwestern to Eclipse Select Vice President Mike Nesci. At the time, Davison said that Nesci already had fielded some interest from the Wildcats program on Davison’s behalf.

The center back decided to visit the campus and thought highly of both the institution and soccer program.

“I took a tour of the campus and I fell in love with it,” Davison said. “It’s so beautiful. When I eventually met the

Watching the training, Davison said she gained a lot from that element, and also said there was some familiarity with that process based on the regimen at Eclipse Select.

“It was definitely cool to see how they train, because there are a lot of similarities to what we’ve done at Eclipse,” Davison said. “I got to see what is at the next level and what they

have. They have some unique things such as foot skill tests that you have to pass. I liked watching their warm-ups and the things they do to get going and see how things work. Michael and David were great in explaining the reasons for everything and how that will help them in a game. It was great to see how they operate, their speed of play, transition work and drill work.”

Davison’s hope is to maintain a role as a center back.

“Every time I’ve talked to them, I have gotten the impression that I would be on the defensive line, and I hope to be at center back,” Davison said.

Sorry, coach, no can do.

Daily soccer practice might have worked, this last week of summer, had we not already come down with lastweek-of-summer-itis. You know that thing that happens when you realize that “THIS summer will never happen again,” there are a few things yet to be enjoyed and there are but a precious few unstructured days left with which to enjoy them?

Yeah, I’m suffering from a classic case of “say it ain’t so, summer can’t go!”

By the time the soccer thing was floated the kids and I had already sketched out our own game plan for this week, issued invites to their friends (Holly even created a calendar that included the long-range forecast for each day so we could make the most of the weather), and cemented our plans.

Soccer wasn’t the only wonderful thing that competed for our attention, this last week of my kids’ freedom from the structure of school and schedules, but guess what? The fun won.

For example, when she might have been at practice, Holly and I brought her friend along with us to see the movie “The Giver.” It was opening night, they’d been plotting to be there, and that was that. Another day, our family headed out to the Geneva Kayak Center in Yorkville to go tubing on the Fox River. What a blast! To be honest, my kids weren’t totally sold on the idea (indoor pursuits beckoned), but then we strapped on our lifejackets and helmets.

After we bubbled over the first of several wee “rapids,” I looked back over my shoulder and spotted Noah grinning ear to ear. “Is that a smile I see?” My heart fills to bursting whenever I see one of those.

I got a few more, when I brought the kids and their friends to the Morton Arboretum on Thursday. As always,

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose the towering trees of the magic-filled spruce grove (my kids and I have likened it to Narnia for years) did not disappoint. This time, but for a moment, it even returned my little boy to me. Sure enough, my 16-year-old, who now towers over me like a tall spruce himself, picked up a stick and carried it. “I’m a nature boy, Mommy,” he’d once said on a walk through these very same woods, years before on one of our first visits, then with a much smaller stick in his grasp.

Later, as I followed him and the others through a treehouse, high above the children’s garden, Noah informed me that, “The wood is molten lava,” and then showed me how to traverse the treehouse by creating footholds in the sturdy netting that served as walls.

Sure, OK (I did it!), but you should have seen the look on the face of the kid behind me when I passed the message along. “It’s a movement!”

Noah proclaimed, as we turned a corner and realized that the message had spread.

I’d merely hoped to fill the kids up with the out-of-doors before they all got stuck behind their desks, but these moments filled me, too.

Another day this week, Holly and I went to Chicago with our friends, her Naperville bff, Alana, and Alana’s mom, Deann. It takes a bit of planning to coordinate our schedules now that we live 45 minutes apart, but we were determined to squeeze in one last visit before school started – and we did.

We spent a few fun hours at the Shedd Aquarium, and then we took a refreshing dip in Lake Michigan at the beach beside the Adler

Our beautiful girls may be maturing quickly, but not so fast that they didn’t want to practice their handstands on the beach. Later that evening, when I could have been sitting at my desk and participating in an exciting writing webinar (that included feedback from an editor), we giggled and talked over burgers. Our conversation, which spanned subjects from the serious to the silly, continued way past our bedtime – but we didn’t rush it, even when

we arrived back in Naperville to drop off our friends. I simply turned off the car and we kept right on giggling.

That’s a bubble I wouldn’t have dreamed of popping.

I was reminded, that day we went tubing, that life is about “going with the flow.”

There’s a time and a season for everything. When things are slow-going, like they were when I got stuck in a section of the river with no rapids, or even when I stalled-out altogether – when it seemed I would never get past the pool of apparently

still water (it wasn’t, really, it just felt that way) – that’s when I need to rest and refuel. Soon enough, the flow will pick back up and carry me onward, but meanwhile, I need to just lean my head and enjoy the view. Indeed, right now – until dawn on Monday morning, by golly! – our season is summer.

Life is about ‘going with the flow’

Ornamental alliums – different and easy If you want something different, easy and inexpensive that will give your garden charm and distinction, think about planting ornamental alliums.

Alliums bloom from spring through fall. These amazing bulbs come in many colors and heights, and there is at least one that will help make any landscape come alive. They are great companion plants, and the larger ones form exclamation points in the garden.

One of the showiest and earliest to bloom is Allium aflatunense, Purple Sensation. It has many tiny violet purple florets that are tightly compressed to look like a baseball-sized flower on a 20- 30-inch stem. It’s a bit costly, but I found that just three make a major statement. There are several other large alliums that have a similar effect. Ambassador, Firmament, Giganteum, Gladiator, Globemaster and Mars are the ones to seek.

Allium oreophilum, blooming in late May, is the other extreme. It is a short, bunch-type allium in a beautiful rosy pink. I use it to accompany my peonies.

The quarter-sized deep purplish pink flowers bloom in groups and are wonderful for the front of the border. Very inexpensive, they are 4 to 6 inches in height and have an elfin charm.

Allium caeruleum opens in mid-June. The color is flax blue, and the flowers are round and the size of a quarter on 12- to 18inch stems. Plant more of these to make an impact, but they are very inexpensive.

Allium christophii is a superstar. It starts blooming in late May, but new ones keep opening for weeks, sometimes until the end of June. A beautiful amethyst color on a stem that ranges from 12 to 20 inches, it is striking and elegant at the same time.

LEARNING TO GROW Donna Mack For an allium that makes an impact long after bloom, choose Allium karataviense. With a pale lilac or silvery white flower (the cultivar Ivory Queen), this golf ball-sized allium has broad, thick leaves that are extremely decorative. It blooms in very late spring and is suitable for planters.

Drumstick allium (A. sphaerocephalon) starts blooming in mid-July. Burgundy in color, it blooms for weeks because all of them don’t sprout at once. And if you dig them up you will see that they reproduce well. It is another very inexpensive allium.

For a fall-blooming allium, seek out Allium ramosum.

Blooming in September, it ends the season with 18-inch tall, white flowers.

Moderator change on ‘Meet the Press’

By BEN TERRIS The Washington Post People can finally stop speculating about “Meet the Press.” NBC News President Deborah Turness announced that David Gregory, who has been hosting for almost six years, will leave the network and that Chuck Todd will replace him as moderator beginning Sept. 7. Andrea Mitchell will serve as moderator of “Meet the Press” this weekend.

“I leave NBC as I came – humbled and grateful. I love journalism and serving as moderator of MTP was the highest honor there is,” Gregory Tweeted.

Gregory took over in December 2008, after Tim Russert’s death in June of that year, and has presided over a significant drop in ratings.

For weeks, there were rumors that NBC would dump Gregory, and this week, Politico’s Mike Allen reported that Todd would be the “likely successor.”

CNN’s Brian Stelter first reported Thursday that Todd would take over at “Meet the Press.”

For NBC, the hope is to return the program to at least a semblance of its standing in Russert’s glory days, when the show consistently clocked in atop the Sunday-talk show ratings.

Fans of Todd say that’s what NBC will be getting from the new host.

“They share the same boyish enthusiasm for politics and Washington and the process for it all,” says Amy Walter, who replaced Todd when he left the Hotline.

“He’s critical without being cynical. He doesn’t give politicians a pass but isn’t disdainful of them.”

It’s the go-to compliment for Todd. He’s from politics the way Russert was (both worked for politicians before becoming journalists).

At the same time, it’s a twist of the knife for Gregory, who during his time at

“Meet the Press” earned the reputation of not being greatly interested in politics and policy. NBC officials were even throwing around the term “the David Gregory Problem,” and when Politico reported on his imminent departure, Dylan Byers didn’t beat around the bush: “He was widely disliked within the organization and his ambition and vanity rubbed important colleagues at NBC the wrong way.”

In an email to NBC News staff, Turness said Todd will continue in his role as NBC News’ political director and will “hand over his roles” as chief White House correspondent and anchor of MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown.”

Todd came to Washington from Miami as an undergraduate at George Washington University and landed a job in 1992 at National Journal’s Hotline.

He worked for the morning tip sheet until 2007. For six of those years he was the editor in chief.

“He was a force of nature from day one,” says Craig Crawford, who was the Hotline editor when Todd started. “He was so deep into politics that he was

as enthusiastic about city council elections as presidential campaigns. He had to compromise just to keep the Hotline from being 300 pages every day.”

This is why Todd is known around town as a “political junkie” and as someone who loves the game. He certainly caught the eye of David Bradley, the millionaire owner of the Atlantic, the parent company of the Hotline.

Bradley, a “self-abashed Chuck fan,” emailed in this story to prove it: “If you use this, please note that this is not my everyday schedule,” he writes. “My wife and I were headed off for a small dinner honoring the King of Jordan. I dropped in on Chuck to ask him to talk me through the smartest thinking on the presidential election – of 2004. I took a few notes, repeated them at dinner, and proved to be more brilliant than, in fact, I am.”

Wonks are in these days.

When it comes to politics, Todd is the geek-in-chief.

“There is no one with a bigger passion for politics than Chuck,” Turness said in her email. “His unique ability to deliver that passion with razor sharp anal-

ysis and infectious enthusiasm makes him the perfect next generation moderator of this beloved broadcast.”

There is no doubt that the show needed some kind of a change. “Meet the Press” spent decades at No. 1, but the leader is now CBS’s “Face the Nation” (with a weekly average viewership of 3.35 million during the first three months of 2014 – 5 percent more than ABC’s “This Week” and 8 percent more than “Meet the Press.”) This past weekend, “Meet the Press” attracted 2.1 million viewers vs. about 2.9 million for “Face the Nation” and approximately 2.6 million for “This Week.”

As Todd’s former boss Crawford says, knowing the material is only half the reason that Todd will be a good fit at “Meet the Press.”

“The other half is having an engaging personality,” Crawford says. “He loves people and is chattier than Gregory. He’ll be able to break down barriers and get people off of their talking points.”

So it seems that each time somebody compares Todd to the popular Russert, each time somebody says that Todd is truly passionate about politics, or that he lives for the game, the implication is that Gregory does not. Not everyone thinks that’s fair.

“I don’t know why we have to compliment Todd at Gregory’s expense,” political strategist Hilary Rosen said in an interview.

“David’s great, too.”

For weeks, the rumor mills were spinning at top speed. Competitors on Fox News even started feeling bad for Gregory: “NBC is throwing David Gregory under the bus and it’s drip drip drip,” Greta Van Susteren wrote. “It is so slow, so painful and wicked.”

As of Thursday afternoon, it no longer felt so slow. By Sunday, “Meet the Press” will have a new host.

Keep things fun, safe when it comes to youth sports Dear Doctor K: I have a fourth-grader and a middle-schooler. Both enjoy playing sports. Is there anything I can do to reduce their risk of sports injuries?

Dear Reader: Injuries that result from youth sports are becoming more common – and the injuries aren’t just the expected bumps and bruises that come with being active, either.

Doctors are seeing more serious injuries, some of which can lead to lifelong disability.

At the same time, regular exercise is really important to a child’s health. It also sets patterns for exercise when kids become adults, and that’s important to their health later in life.

Finally, playing sports teaches many lessons about friendship, teamwork and healthy competition.

So what can you do to keep your kids healthy and safe?

• Make sure they learn and use proper techniques for their sport. Many coaches are parents who are well-meaning, but have

When choosing leagues and coaches for your kids, ask the coaches about their experience and techniques.

• Don’t overdo practice. We all know that to excel at something takes practice. But the more hours young bodies spend in practice, the higher the risk of injury. I can’t say how much is too much; it depends on many things. For example, an hour of practice once or twice a week might be fine for a young child.

For a high school student, two hours every day after school.

It also depends on what is happening during practice. Pay attention to your child’s energy level, interest and any physical complaints.

• Think twice about contact sports. Over the past five years, there have been an increasing

number of reports about permanent brain damage from repeated head injuries. The evidence of permanent brain damage is strongest for head injuries that produce concussions.

There isn’t a lot of evidence yet that contact sports are dangerous for children. As a result, my pediatric colleagues are divided about what to tell parents.

I would follow the news carefully on this topic.

• Vary the sports and activities. Young children often end up playing just one or two sports all year round. This can lead to stress injuries.

Finally, don’t forget to keep things fun. Sometimes, sitting on the sidelines of a youth competition, you’d think that every child was headed for professional sports. Encourage your child to work hard and do his or her best.

Abuse takes many forms Dr. Wallace: I have a friend who has told me that she is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend. She is 19 and he is 25. She says that she loves this guy and just can’t seem to break up with him. I asked her if he is hitting her and she said no. I’ve tried to pry out of her what the abuse might be, but all she says is that she doesn’t want to talk about it now, but later she will tell me everything.

If it’s not physical abuse, is she being abused sexually? What should I do to help her?

– Nameless, Omaha, Nebraska Dear Nameless: “Relationship abuse” is a pattern of unacceptable, and sometimes violent, behavior someone uses against a girlfriend or boyfriend. It can take many forms, including threats, insults, emotional abuse, isolation from family and friends, name calling and controlling what someone wears or who they can socialize with. It can also include sexual abuse. In most cases of relationship abuse, the victims are female, and the abusers are male.

To help your friend, let her know that you will always be available to offer assistance any time she needs to call on you. It is important for her to know that you will always be there for her.

Whenever you have the opportunity, ask questions about her relationship with this guy and encourage her to do her best to leave him. Also have her contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-SAFE).

They will direct her to a program or support group in her community.

Dr. Wallace: You wrote: “Running away

I don’t like your word “never.” What about the teen who is being abused both physically and sexually by a stepfather?

That’s what was happening to my best friend, and after discussing it with me, we both agreed the best thing she could do was to run away (with her boyfriend) and start a new life in another location.

Dear Nameless: Your friend was in a dangerous situation and clearly needed to leave her home as soon as possible, but I fear she may have jumped from the frying pan into the fire. Her best bet would have been to find shelter with a friend or relative – and to notify the proper authorities. Her stepfather was engaging in criminal behavior and should have faced the consequences.

I know that some teens face unbearable situations at home and have no option but to leave. But they shouldn’t try to face the world on their own. It can be a cold, cruel place for a runaway.

I truly hope your friend and her boyfriend are safe. But never would I encourage a teen to run away from home. The teen has safer options.

In this deal, what should East do? South is in four hearts and West leads the club jack.

Over West’s one-diamond opening, North had a clear-cut takeout double. Yes, he would have preferred to hold better clubs, but he was 4-4 in the majors. South’s two-heart jump advance showed some 9-11 points. Although the diamond queen looked useless, the known eight- or nine-card heart fit was good compensation. Then both North and South were tempted by the vulnerable game bonus.

When West leads the club jack, it denies the queen (we lead the top of touching honors) and the ace (we do not underlead an ace at trick one against a suit contract). So East knows that South holds the club ace and queen. As a consequence, there is no point in third hand high.

South is bound to get two club tricks, but why let him capture two honors instead of one?

If East plays an encouraging club eight, West, when in with the heart ace, can lead another club. Then the defenders will take one trick in each suit for down one.

But if East wastes the club king at trick one, when West is next on lead, he cannot play a club without giving South three tricks in the suit. And if West leads another suit, declarer can benefit from the 3-3 spade break to take three spades, four hearts, one diamond and two clubs.
