‘Best Under 40’ dinner planned for Sept. 22 On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of dining at Shakou in St. Charles with local individuals who have been selected to receive the Kane County Chronicle’s “Best Under 40” award. “Best Under 40” seeks to recognize professionals in Kane County younger than age 40 who have made significant contributions to their profession, company and community.

Those who will receive the award – which is in its first year – are: Stacie Barnett, Katlyn Eggar, Traci Eggleston, Kimberly Elam, Josh Feagans, Darius Grigaliunas, Joshua Hall, Dr. Emily Loveland, Dr. Colleen Noe, Meagan Schoenrock, Roman Seckel and Alex Tyler.

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Balcazar in person now, I can say they make up a talented and impressive bunch.

They are individuals who – among them – have started their own businesses, joined the military, competed in the Olympics, work with the elderly, practice law, build homes, are doctors, volunteer for nonprofit organizations and are active in local chambers of commerce, in addition to other involvements.

They do a lot, and they are helping make Kane County a better place to live.

The lunch Tuesday provided the “Best Under 40” nominees with the opportunity to get to know each other in advance of a recognition dinner Sept. 22 at Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles.

They also had their pictures taken for stories that will appear in the Chronicle leading up to the dinner. Photos from the shoot also will be used in a program that will be distributed at the dinner.

Tickets for the “Best Under 40” reception, dinner and ceremony cost $50. Check-in and networking will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. To buy tickets, visit bestunder40kc. eventbrite.com.

Ex-Elburn police officer pleads not guilty to assault charges

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com A former Elburn police officer accused of sexually assaulting a child he knew pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday.

During an arraignment Friday, former Elburn police officer David Wright, 54, of Campton Hills, pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. While the charges were being read in court, Wright said he felt faint and request-

ed a chair to sit in.

He was charged in April of sexually assaulting a child he knew over a period of years, from March 21, 2005, to April 27, 2015. The child was younger than David Wright 13 when the assaults began, court records show.

criminal sexual assault of a child, 11 counts of criminal sexual assault and six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Wright has been fired from the Elburn Police Department, where he had worked since 1991, officials said. Wright has been held in the Kane County Jail on $500,000 bond since his arrest April 27. He remained in the jail as of Friday afternoon.

According to court records, Wright listed a wife

and three children living “check to check” on the $3,800 net income he was paid each month he was working. Wright listed expenses of $1,400 a month rent and a debt of more than $500,000 to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Wright also listed four vehicles as assets: a 1999 Jeep, a 2000 conversion van, a 2000 Dodge Ram and a 2006 Grand Jeep Cherokee.

His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 11.

‘A HIDDEN GEM’

How about strategies to help children succeed academically and socially?

Residents can find those answers and more at the Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation, 411 Stevens St., Geneva.

The nonprofit foundation gives parents and caregivers ways to produce positive child development within homes and schools, said Kimberly Svevo-Cianci, its chairwoman and co-founder.

In September, the group will launch a weekly family program in St. Charles geared toward those with special needs children.

At the same time, the group will work with students at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn; although everyone is invited, the event will include special outreach to military veterans on campus.

To eliminate financial barriers to its programming, Svevo-Cianci said services are offered on a significant sliding scale – or free of cost – depending on income level.

“Some people have said the foundation is a hidden gem in Kane County,” Svevo-Cianci said.

The foundation’s teachings are rooted in the UNICEF and World Health Organization-recognized International Child Development Program and the Integrative Youth Development Program, she said.

Since the organization was formed in 2011, its five-member staff and multiple volunteers have worked with more than 220 parents and about 250 children.

Including the foundation’s workshops and presenta-

tions, nearly 1,300 people have been impacted by the teachings, Svevo-Cianci said.

Wambangco, his wife, Erin, son Nicholas, 4, and daughter Madelyn, 3, would have dinner together with the other families. Then adults and children would separate for discussion.

He said he learned children require more of a learning curve than adults.

“You cannot raise your kids like they’re soldiers, and that’s really hard to do,” Wambangco said. “It’s hard to separate the army and family.”

The Wambangcos used to discipline their children differently, but – after attending the learning group – they work together on how to deal with outbursts or sibling rivalry.

The participants learned to have empathy and see things from another person’s perspective, specifically from their children’s viewpoint, said Jack Erwin, a retired U.S. Army National Guard major and certified program facilitator.

he saw the benefits of what the foundation offered to military families and all families in general.

The groups will launch discussions from written scenarios or video clips, Erwin said. Interaction is encouraged, and children also receive a workbook that helps them learn concepts at the appropriate age level, he said.

Erwin is one of 60 facilitators trained by the foundation so far, Svevo-Cianci said.

“What we’re anticipating for 2016 is an expansion into new communities, reaching more parents, caregivers and their children,” Svevo-Cianci said.

The foundation’s budget for this year is about $300,000, including monetary and inkind donations, she said.

The foundation will hold its Jazz in the Pavilion Fall Fundraiser on Sept. 19 at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave., St. Charles. During the event, the winner of the Ultimate Playhouse raffle will be drawn to receive a 12-foot, 6-inch tall playhouse valued at more than $15,000.

A pharmaceutical company has awarded the Kane County Health Department with a grant to obtain nearly 700 cartons of equipment used to combat heroin overdoses, the agency announced Thursday in a news release.

With the grant from Kaléo Inc., the health department will purchase 692 cartons of Evzio naloxone auto-injectors, which is a $380,600 value, the release stated.

Kaléo manufactures the Evzio naloxone auto-injector.

According to the release, naloxone – also sold as Narcan – is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, such as heroin.

It restores breathing in overdose victims, giving them the chance to be hospitalized for treatment, the release stated.

The release indicates the auto-injectors will allow the health department to continue training police and other first-responders in the use of the life-saving devices.

Since its September 2014 launch, the release stated, the health department’s Narcan program has allowed 590 police officers to be trained in the use of naloxone delivery systems, including a nasal spray.

The auto-injectors feature voice guidance and are simpler to use than the nasally-administered naloxone, according to the release.

Naloxone has saved the lives of eight Kane County residents in the past year, the release stated.

Health department staff will retrain officers to use the auto-injector as supplies of the nasal spray are used up, according to the release.

Significant concessions from State’s Attorney Joe McMahon, Sheriff Donald Kramer and Coroner Rob Russell – along with contributions in other areas – have cut the initial $3.2 million budget gap to $1 million, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told the Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Thursday.

“I am very pleased they responded to my request,” he said.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen expressed his gratitude, noting he understood the sacrifices made.

For McMahon, that meant using a phased-in approach to add new personnel.

He had requested five positions to support the new court case management system, which is expected to result in a shift of responsibilities for his office. He agreed to add one assistant state’s attorney and two support staff in 2016 and to wait until 2017 to hire two additional employees.

McMahon also eliminated a request for a bilingual in-

vestigator, he said.

Kramer said he went through every line item to see where he could reduce and ended with a “very frugal budget” that is about $290,000 less than the office’s 2015 adopted budget.

His budget includes $337,000 to replace 11 vehicles, as well as funds for three additional sheriff’s deputies, he said, noting he wants to dedicate the new personnel to a traffic unit.

Although his budget adds employees, he reduced his original personnel request.

The sheriff’s initial 2016 budget included about $1 million to support 10 new employees – five officers in public safety and five in corrections. He removed the request for additional correctional officers, among other items, Kramer said.

Russell said he too removed a personnel item from his budget: the compliance manager position.

“The entire county will be going to the summit now,” Lauzen said of tackling the remaining budget gap. The last leg is the “steepest” and “hardest,” he said, but the county “will deliver a balanced budget.”

The county’s fiscal year is Dec. 1 to Nov. 30.

BATAVIA – Siemens will have to remove foundry sands from its former factory site at Van Nortwick Avenue and McKee Street in Batavia.

Siemens sent Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening a letter this week about the work that will need to be done on the site.

“Siemens Real Estate has been working diligently to restore the site and has conducted testing in accordance with generally accepted environmental standards,” Siemens Real Estate project manager T. Dean Harris wrote in the letter. “During such testing, buried materials consisting largely of foundry sands were discovered that apparently were used as backfill during construction of the former Furnas/Siemens site in Batavia.

Tests of the foundry sands indicate that materials commonly associated with the incomplete combustion of foundry materials are present in concentrations that give rise to regulation by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.”

In the letter, Harris stated Siemens is working with licensed professional consultants to further investigate and remediate any concerns posed by the foundry sands in accordance with state regulations and requirements.

He said the company is not aware of any measurable risk posed to local residents by the buried materials.

“Nevertheless, SRE has taken measures to minimize storm water runoff from the site, including the construction of a drainage trench to capture such runoff from the site,” Harris wrote in the letter.

Siemens officials declined to comment about the site in light of the city filing a complaint in June 2014 against Siemens in Kane County Circuit Court, charging the company with failing to re-

hanging out with a group of Pathfinders – our program for kids entering kindergarten and first grade. We were at Ferson Creek Park, and the campers were dipping their nets into the silty softness of the stream bottom where it meets the Fox River.

All of a sudden, one of the children let out a squeal. From where I stood maybe 20 feet upstream, it was hard to tell if it was a good squeal – one signifying discovery – or a bad squeal, as in the sound a kid makes when s/he gets pinched by a crayfish.

Turns out, this squeal was a combination of the two. Ian, one of the more intrepid Pathfinders, had pulled his net out of the water and found something unlike anything he’d ever seen before. An inch-and-a-half long, with appendages poking out at all angles, the creature could be either friend or foe.

Ian wasn’t taking any chances; he just focused on squealing – a sound that brought his instructors and I sloshing over to intervene.

Ian was more than happy to surrender his net so we could figure out what it was he’d caught. You’d think at that point things would have quieted down. But, no. When Ian’s squeals died down, well, that’s when mine started up.

Because what he’d found

Last year we took a Good Natured look at the mayfly, one of a cast of assorted characters often lumped together under the generic term “river bugs.”

We talked about the delicate beauty of the adults; the fleeting nature of that final life phase; and the insect’s vital role in local food chains. We also mentioned a little bit about the immature life stages – how the nymphs breathe through gills and require clean, well-oxygenated water in which to survive.

In preparation for that column, I went to Ferson Creek and poked around underneath the rocks in the stream bed.

My hope was to find a mayfly nymph to photograph. While a lot of people might be familiar with the adult mayfly, far fewer have seen the amazing, intricate details of the juveniles.

What better way to learn than by seeing a picture?

Alas, I succeeded in the first half of that mission, but not the other. The little guys were there all right, but their small size, combined with my limited photographic skills, resulted in a series of blurry images that made the beautiful river rocks look like potatoes, and the little nymphs – so wonderfully detailed in real life – like the black spots you cut off before baking.

The piece that ran last year included a photo I’d taken several years before, during a mayfly hatch in 2010. However, I never gave up on my dream of one day photographing a baby mayfly.

Little did I know all I needed was the help of a first-grader.

I know, cool! Right?

The Ephemeridae adults are our area’s largest mayflies, with bodies lengths of up to 30 millimeters – a little more than an inch, for those of us who don’t speak metric.

This family’s offspring are no slouches either. With long bodies, beefy forelimbs and sharp mandibles that look like tusks, the nymphs are impressive indeed. Add on a pair of long, fringed antennae, feathery gills that line the outer edges of the abdomen, and three filaments trailing off the back, and you’ll quickly understand why Ian, and I, were squealing.

Ephemeridae, it seems, can cause a sensation wherever they occur. Even if you haven’t seen one in person, you’ve probably heard about them.

Remember last summer, when millions of mayflies emerged en masse from the Mississippi River near LaCrosse, Wisconsin? They were Ephemerids, genus Hexagenia.

I recall Tom Skilling talking about them on WGN. The clouds of insects were so thick, they actually appeared

on weather radars. In fact, the roads became so slick, cars collided on roadways nearest the emergence. But just as quickly as they arrived, the insects were gone again. All that remained of their ephemeral lives were there somewhat more durable exoskeletons – which had to be cleaned up with snowplows and shovels.

Tri-Cities mayfly emergences do occur, but on a much lesser degree. Our waters aren’t quite up to the high standards needed to support large numbers of mayflies, which means it’s important to conserve every nymph we find.

Including Ian’s. After a brief photo session that involved some fresh water, a baby-food container and more than a little bit of luck, we let the immature mayfly go back to its burrowing ways.

Like its adult phase, the nymph’s time with us at summer camp was short. But our memories of it, along with some so-so, although not awful, photos will last a lifetime.

Target to stop labeling toys for boys or for girls – good

Target’s decision to eliminate “boys” and “girls” signs from its toys and bedding departments makes a bold statement: Gender stereotypes and gendered marketing are passé. Many parents have spent years calling for the desegregation of children’s products, and this decision from the second-largest discount retailer in the U.S. signals a real cultural shift.

The announcement has met both high praise and extreme outrage in the past week. For every progressive parent celebrating the demise of the pink and blue aisles, a conservative parent is furious that Target has taken the other side in this culture war. Their outrage seems to stem from a widespread misunderstanding of the concept of “gender neutral” in a marketing context.

For example, a recent statement from Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, echoes many conservatives’ comments on Target’s Facebook page. Graham is calling for consumers to boycott.

He called Target to complain about its decision, because, he said, “It’s not gender-neutral people out there” who led to Target’s success. Graham added: “Jesus said, ‘Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female’ (Matthew 19:4). You can’t get any clearer than that.”

“Gender-neutral marketing” doesn’t signify an attempt to make males and females the same, however, or to ban traditionally gendered toys like Barbie and G.I. Joe, as some allege. Rather, as I have explained on “Fox and Friends” and in the Boston Globe Magazine, it sim-

ply means organizing products children already love according to interest or theme – not by boy or girl.

It’s actually a throwback to a bygone era that many critics of the practice grew up with: Gender-based marketing only came into vogue in the 1990s, when companies realized they could convince parents of children of both sexes to buy twice as much stuff by introducing gender segmentation to kids’ products.

In fact, toys used to be sold to kids in broad categories and organized by type, not by who would use them, according to Elizabeth Sweet, a sociologist and lecturer at the University of California at Davis who has researched how the gendered marketing of children’s products has evolved since 1905. “So this move by Target is neither radical nor unprecedented,” Sweet says.

So, why this change, and why now? Some media outlets have reported that Target’s decision was the result of one woman’s tweet that went viral in June.

That tweet featured a photo of a Target toy aisle labeled “building sets” and “girls’ building sets,” implying the retailer’s default assumption is that building toys are for boys.

In reality, however, Target’s decision is not about one person’s efforts. Rather, it’s the culmination of the activism of countless parents, educators and critics. Kudos to Target for acting in children’s best interests.

The Kane County Chronicle this week reported on the 25th anniversary of the Elderday Center in Batavia, a nonprofit organization that provides day services for “adults age 55 and better,” according to its website, www. elderdaycenter.org.

Services provided by the Elderday Center can help seniors stay independent longer. We support such goals and recognize that caring for seniors is critical – especially since that particular population is expected to grow in the U.S. in coming years.

According to www. census.gov, “By 2030, more than 20 percent of U.S. residents are projected to be aged 65 and over, compared with 13 percent in 2010 and 9.8 percent in 1970.”

With the Illinois budget situation yet unresolved, the status of state services that affect seniors is

uncertain. But there are steps that families can take to make sure their older loved ones are cared for in the best manner possible.

An AARP guide titled “Prepare to Care: A Planning Guide for Families” doesn’t mince words: “So why not just throw this brochure on the ‘to do’ pile for another day?” It reads.

“Because failing to plan for future responsibilities can make a bad situation worse. And the loved ones you tried to protect by tip-toeing around ‘uncomfortable’ issues will be the ones who end up suffering the most.”

The guide – which can be found at www.aarp.org/ foundation/preparetocare – goes on to share some helpful tips for how to communicate with the elderly about the road ahead.

One tip reads: “Try not to approach the conversation with preconceived ideas about what your loved ones might say or how they might react.

‘Dad, I just wanted to have

a talk about what you want. Let’s just start with what is important to you.’ ” Another: “Be very straightforward with the facts. Do not hide negative information, but also be sure to acknowledge and build on family strengths.

‘As time goes on, it might be difficult to stay in this house because of all the stairs, but you have other options. Let’s talk about what those might be.’ ” And keep the conversation going. It doesn’t – and probably shouldn’t – happen over just one cup of coffee or dinner. People change, and situations evolve. Make sure you stay up to date on what your older relative finds important, while he or she still is able to communicate that to you.

Maintaining a dialogue with the elderly loved ones in your life is one of the best steps you can take to make sure you’re aware of their wants and needs – now and in the future.

Swanson as humble as it gets

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Both Jared Miller and Dansby Swanson got the unique experience of playing on a Vanderbilt baseball team that won the College World Series in 2014.

Not only were the two teammates, but they also roomed together that year. Miller was at the end of his Vanderbilt career, while Swanson still had another year of college baseball to play.

Miller was taken in the 11th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks after that season, and is currently a starting pitcher with Jared Miller the team’s Class-A affiliate, the Kane County Cougars.

In his senior season, Swanson might not Dansby have won the Swanson CWS again, but rose his stock to being selected as the No. 1 overall pick by Arizona in this year’s draft.

With Miller in his second stint of the season with Kane County and Swanson just getting his professional career underway in Short-A Hillsboro, the chance of being reunited is growing closer.

“The thought of playing professional baseball together is really cool,” Miller said.

“It’s something you talk about at Vandy. Obviously we talked about it during spring training but they’ll probably move him pretty quick through the organization. It kind of adds an incentive for me to keep working because I’d obviously love to move up and play together.”

The standout shortstop Swanson’s professional debut was partially delayed when he was hit by a pitch in the face during a simulated game, in July, before joining Hillsboro.

Had he not been hit, Swanson was rumored to have started in High-A Visalia, skipping over both Hillsboro and the Cougars.

Although Miller’s recent call up to the Cougars has kept the two from being teammates just a little longer, it has not hampered to two from staying in touch.

“We shoot texts and stuff pretty much on a regular basis,” Miller said. “I know what it’s like, so I don’t want to be in his hair just like nobody wants someone to be bothering them everyday. I know as the [No. 1 pick] he’s getting a lot of attention so, at the end of the day, I’m here for him as

a friend and if he needs me, he knows where to find me.”

It was a pretty gifted set of roommates at Vanderbilt, as the two also roomed with pitchers Carson Fulmer (No. 8 overall pick by the White Sox in this year’s draft) and Adam Ravenelle (fourth round pick by the Detroit Tigers in ’14).

Not only are Miller and Swanson in the Diamondbacks organization, but another SEC pitcher during their tenure is on the Cougars roster. Chris Oliver, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Arkansas, was acquired by Arizona in July from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Oliver said there was a pretty good chance he was on

the mound, facing Swanson at one point while with the Razorbacks, but said it has been a neat experience to see and become teammates with some old SEC foes.

“It’s kind of crazy that you run into all these guys that you pitched or played against throughout college,” Oliver said. “Those SEC rivalries kind of translate into playing in a season like this. The standings are tight and everything. So obviously getting to play with another SEC guy like [Swanson] would be pretty awesome.”

There’s no word if or when Swanson will make the jump, but it would seem that if he makes a trip to Kane County,

it would have to be this season. All signs would point to the No. 1 pick starting above A-ball next year.

Regardless of where he get called up to, or where he plays the remained rod this season, Miller knows Swanson will be an asset to any clubhouse he walks into.

“He’s just such a humble guy,” Miller said. “He’s always a guy that’s going to stay after for the kids. He has always wanted the stage to give back and now he has it. Everyone should look forward to the opportunity to play with a guy like that and I couldn’t think of a better guy for the organization to build the eventual big league team around.”

Big venue means bigger relaxation I finally found myself at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark last week.

Let’s just say that my return to the beautiful home of the Kane County Cougars was long overdue.

And, no, I wasn’t there because it was One Cent Wiener Wednesday.

I was on the job, as I umpired an extremely laidback employee appreciation game for Amway’s Freedom Fighters.

While I put the same effort into every game I umpire, I have to admit this was something I hadn’t experienced in nearly 30 years of umpiring.

I was the plate umpire and got into position to call balls and strikes.

The key difference, though, was that the rules prohibited me from calling balls and strikes. What? I had to stop myself several times in the first couple of innings as my instinct is to call balls and strikes, so I bit my tongue.

The pitchers simply lobbed pitches so hitters could easily make contract, or so they thought.

Most did, although one poor fella swung and missed 13 times before finally hitting a slow roller to first base. Apparently, No. 13 isn’t always unlucky.

I basically stood around and watched, occasionally calling “Foul” and tossing new balls into play. Zzzzz.

It didn’t take me long to recognize that boredom was setting in, so I struck up conversations with everyone who stepped up to the dish.

The PA guy announced each batter and where they were from, so when they dug in I asked them if they were fans of their hometown team.

The guys from Cincinnati and Philadelphia weren’t reluctant in admitting their respective Reds and Phillies fandom, although they didn’t have anything good to say about their struggling teams.

Come on, man, at least give me some love for Aroldis Chapman.

I also met guys from Houston and Kansas City who were beaming about the great seasons their respec-

I told the Royals fan that I hope my Cardinals can meet them in October for a 30-year World Series rematch. He smiled and didn’t call me Denkinger.

The game went by pretty quickly despite there being so many hits, errors and runs. I had just one play at the plate, which wasn’t even close, but it inspired the Enrico Palazzo in me to energetically make the out call, although I couldn’t pull off the moonwalk afterward.

I could see that the players were having a blast, and that’s what this game was all about anyway. I was surprised by how many coworkers, friends and family filled the stands and how loudly they cheered throughout the game. I found myself smiling along with them.

What I think I enjoyed the most, though, was seeing two guys, who easily were in their 70s, take some hacks.

Our specialized rules allowed them to have pinch runners who took off for first base as soon as contact was made. They actually hit the ball hard, lining base hits into left field. I suppose you’re never too young to start playing this game and never too old to quit. Take that, Julio Franco.

We were restricted to a time limit, so we didn’t get to play a full nine innings, but everyone got a chance to bat a couple times, so I think everyone was satisfied with the unique experience of playing the national pastime in a professional stadium.

The players thanked me, and while I shook dozens of hands afterward, I then told my umpire partner this: “You know, I’ve probably umpired 60 to 70 games at this stadium, and who knows how many games I’ve worked overall since I started umpiring, and I’ve never worked something as unique and casual like this.

I was scheduled to work a high school doubleheader but it got rained out and then I had two tournaments where I was supposed to be here for most of the weekend, but they got rained out, too. I thought I’d have to wait until next year to get back here.”

Fortunately, I didn’t.

Speaking of doing things, former Batavia basketball standout Nick Fruendt did something big.

Well, actually, he said, “I do.”

Fruendt got married early this month. (And I thought not having to umpire was a vacation. He’s only honeymooning at the French Polynesian Islands.)

Those who have followed area basketball for the past 10 years undoubtedly remember the great career Fruendt had for the Bulldogs before playing at Northwestern.

I had the pleasure of covering many of Fruendt’s high school basketball games, but what many don’t know is that he was also a heck of a hitter. He simply quit playing baseball once he started high school.

I’ll never forget a home run he launched June 19, 2004 at Goodwin South in North Aurora during a 14U tournament.

It must’ve cleared the right-center field fence by at least 100 feet. The most interesting thing, though, was it came right after an intentional walk.

Talk about making someone pay dearly.

In case you’re wondering, “Seriously, Chris, how do you remember the exact date?” Well, it’s because I

kept an umpire journal in 2004.

In fact, Fruendt’s homer gave Batavia an 8-3 lead in extra innings, but Wheaton used a run-scoring error and a pair of two-run homers in the bottom of the eighth

inning to send it to the ninth, where the Bulldogs erupted with four runs and held on for a 12-8 victory.

Yeah, like you didn’t know already. I’m not just an umpire but also a baseball junkie.

Oh, and before I forget, congrats Nick. May you never forget your anniversary date nor that prodigious home run.

Gardeners love to share tips and tricks

As gardeners, we all like to share information we’ve learned and glean information that we might use in the future. While gardening at the Geneva Park District Community Garden on the corner of Peck and Bricher, my buddy Mary Ann and I like to walk around and see other folks’ gardens.

We like to share information with new gardeners and learn from seasoned veterans.

Earlier this season, I ventured over toward a woman who was gardening with her canine buddy, Angel. I went over to say hello to the dog and visit with her. She was cutting out some weeds that had gotten ahead of her.

I asked her if she had ever heard of a stirrup hoe and she replied “no.” I walked over to my plot and retrieved my trusty stirrup hoe and demon-

The hoe has a thin, oscillating steel stirrup that easily cuts through tough weeds just below the soils surface, both on the pull and push motion which makes for fast, efficient hoeing. She thanked me for sharing. I saw her a few weeks later, and she had purchased the hoe and had also told her friend about it. It is my go-to tool for tough hoeing jobs.

Another tool I like is a trowel/rake combination tool. I don’t remember how I actually discovered this handy tool, but it always with me in the garden. It is 17 inches long and has a

trowel on one end and a rake on the other. It is sturdy and doesn’t bend like every other trowel I have owned. I purchased mine online and have given away several as gifts. It is great for planting in the spring, keeping the soil aerated around plants and working fertilizer at the base of plants.

Another tip I learned from a fellow master gardener several years ago was to tie up tomato plants with a figure 8.

This year, we used old sheets that were torn into small strips. By tying in a figure 8 between the plant and the stake, you give the plant stem room for movement and growth. Mary Ann also likes to use bubble wrap taped around the top of our tomato cages.

It is a good barrier that softens the edge of the cage and the stems as they bear fruit are less likely to be damaged

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will host two master classes during its 2015-16 season. The second class, with violinist Rachel Barton Pine, will take place in April.

In a master class, students are selected to perform for an expert who will then work with them on performance technique, musicality and presentation.

Harrell’s presence is felt throughout the musical world. A consummate soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, conductor and teacher, his work throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia has placed him in the highest echelon of today’s performing artists, states a news release.

Harrell is a frequent guest of many leading orchestras, including those in Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Ottawa and Pittsburgh.

He has also toured extensively in Australia and New Zealand, as well as Japan,

From 1985-93 he held the international chair for cello studies at the Royal Academy in London. Concurrently, from 1988-92, he was artistic director of the orchestra, chamber music and conductor training program at the L.A. Philharmonic Institute. In 1993, he became head of the Royal Academy in London, a post he held through 1995. Since the start of the 2002-03 academic year, Harrell has taught cello at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, the release states.

Regular exercise brings remarkable health benefits Dear Doctor K: I haven’t exercised in years, but I’d like to start.

What kind of exercise should I do?

Dear Reader: There is no single type of exercise that can meet all of your health needs. To get the most benefits from your exercise routine, you need a mix of activities.

A balanced weekly exercise plan should look something like this: • About 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise; • Two or more strength-training sessions; • Balance exercises for older adults at risk for falls.

If this sounds overwhelming, remember that workouts can be broken up into smaller segments.

For example, three 10-minute walks can get you to your daily goal of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise. And those walks can occur while you’re doing normal activities, like shopping and going to and from work, so that they don’t involve additional time.

I’ll briefly describe the types of exercises I’ve mentioned: • Aerobic exercise. Aerobic activities, like walking, biking, running and swimming, make the heart and lungs work harder.

• Strength or resistance training. This type of exercise may employ weight machines, free weights, or resistance bands or tubing. It protects against bone loss and builds muscle. It also provides the functional strength you need to do everyday activities such as lifting groceries, climbing stairs or rising from a chair.

Try to do strengthening exercises for all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, chest, abdomen, shoulders and arms) two or more times a week. Wait at least 48 hours between sessions to give your muscles a chance to rest and recover.

• Balance exercises. Our sense of balance typically worsens as we

age. Poor balance can lead to falls, which can cause temporary or permanent disability. Balance-enhancing activities include tai chi, yoga and Pilates. Try to do 30 minutes of balance-training exercises three times per week.

Begin each workout with a simple warm-up of gentle exercise, such as marching in place.

This will loosen up your muscles and get more oxygen-rich blood flowing to them. Cool down at the end by slowing your activity for five to 10 minutes. Finish off with stretches to help prevent stiffness.

Regular exercise surely helps you achieve a healthy weight.

However, I’m surprised by how many people think that losing weight is the only purpose of exercise. That’s wrong: Regular exercise brings remarkable health benefits even if it does not cause you to lose weight.

Regular exercise changes your body chemistry in ways that protect your heart, brain and other organs. This is not “preaching”: It is supported by abundant scientific evidence.

Invite the bully to church Dr. Wallace: I’m very upset with your stand on how a teen should react when confronted by a bully! You advocate that the teen being bullied should engage in a fistfight with the bully.

This is very unwise advice.

My 13-year-old grandson took your advice and came home with a split lip. He said the bully had a bloody nose and an adult broke up the fight. To advocate violence is shocking. My grandson said that if the bully bothered him again, he would fight him again. His mother (my daughter) is happy that her son “stood up for himself like a man.”

This is a disgusting thing for a mother to say to her son.

Whatever happened to working out problems with diplomacy?

Wouldn’t the school administrator help solve this problem? Too much blood is being shed in this world for you to encourage more.

Didn’t you ever hear of “turning the other cheek”? Bullies are human beings, too, and they need to change their aggressive ways by being loved, not by bleeding. My grandson should have invited the bully to come to a church youth meeting.

Let me assure you that I, too, believe in nonviolence, and turning the other cheek is usually the best way to respond to an injustice. But rarely does this work with bullies. When that cheek is turned not once but a dozen times and continues to be bruised and battered, it’s definitely time to stand your ground.

Instead of smiling, the victim must defend himself. Bullies enjoy bullying, not fighting.

Once the bully realizes that his “victim” is going to defend himself, the bullying comes to an end.

Resisting a bully is worth a split lip, which will heal much faster than a period of sustained emotional abuse. I encourage a “victim” to challenge a bully only after all nonviolent efforts have resulted in failure.

I have received a large number of letters from adults who were victims of bullies when in school, and they say that they’re now sorry they didn’t have the courage to “fight back.” Some still suffer emotionally to this very day. And that’s a huge price to pay for turning a cheek.

Bullying is a serious school violation, but a strong administrative staff can do much to stamp out this unacceptable practice.

Show me a school where bullying is allowed to continue unabated on campus, and where victims must defend themselves to solve the problem, and I’ll show you an ineffective and weak administrative staff!

It is always good to have a backup plan. This week, we have been looking at New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor – one of a major – one no-trump, two of the unbid minor by the responder is artificial, promises at least game-invitational values, and asks opener for more information. Most of the time, responder has a fivecard major and is hoping partner can show three-card support. But if the opener does not do that, responder ought to have a backup plan. In this deal, it is three notrump. And how should South play in that contract after West leads a fourth-highest diamond six: five, two, jack?

Note East’s play of his lowest diamond. When third hand cannot play a nine or higher, he gives count. Here, East lowest diamond indicates an odd number of diamonds, which must be three based on the auction.

South starts with eight top tricks: two spades, three hearts, one diamond (at trick one) and two clubs. So, one more winner is needed. That is easily available in clubs, but declarer must make sure that East doesn’t get on play.

Otherwise, East will return a diamond, and the defenders will run the suit.

South should lead the club two to dummy’s ace, then run the club jack or nine through East. Here, declarer cruises home with at least one overtrick.
