So, I slipped and slid down the muddy hill to the practice area. By the time I got down there, the team was already sprinting back and forth across the field.

I have found that water breaks for the team are usually visually compelling and a good way to tell the story of the first day.

These boys were clearly tired, hot and thirsty after their first hour of practice.

STC North drill team hosts car wash benefit

Ethics complaint filed against Lauzen, contract employee The listing linked to a Kane County Chronicle news brief about the fundraiser.

The cost was $30 a person, $50 for couples and $75 for families. It advised that checks for sponsorships should be made out to “Friends for Lauzen.”

According to the ethics ordinance, prohibited political activity is described as “soliciting contributions, including but not limited to, the purchase of, selling, distributing or receiving payment for tickets for any political fundraiser, political meeting or other political event.”

The ethics ordinance also forbids county officers or employees from intentionally performing prohibited political activity while being paid by the county, or to be required to do so as a condition of employment.

Nagel, a Geneva resident, was hired in March to spearhead the Kane County Connects initiative, which is intended to engage residents with county government and provide them with information, such as road closures.

Nagel’s six-month, $30,000 contract is supported by riverboat casino funds.

Nagel said he did not realize the Porky Picnic was a

political fundraising event when he included it in the calendar listing.

He said Lauzen did not tell him to include it but that Nagel added it on his own along with other events.

“I was thinking of it more as a community event than as a fundraiser,” Nagel said.

“I know we have covered the Porky Picnic event for the Beacon. It did not register in my head that I was violating a tenet there. ... If I had to think about it, I should not have done that. I should have been smart enough to recognize it. It was a mistake on my part.”

Nagel previously was an editor at the Aurora-Beacon News, which is owned by Sun-Times Media.

Nagel said he paid $50 for he and his wife to attend.

“I had never been to the Porky Picnic before,” Nagel said. “I realized it is totally a fundraiser. If I had to do it over again, I would not have done that.”

Nagel also asked why Nottke did not just call him when she saw he made a mistake and tell him to take it down.

“If she had sent me an email, I’d have taken it down,” Nagel said. “Instead

... she waits until days later and files a complaint. That is a good use of taxpayer dollars.”

Later in an email statement, Nagel wrote that Nottke was right and he should have known better than to link a political fundraiser in the newsletter.

The newsletter went out to more than 8,000 Kane residents, Nagel said.

“Editing Kane County Connects isn’t the same as editing a newspaper, and Ellen’s point is a good one. It’s something I’ll learn from and keep in mind as we move forward,” Nagel wrote in an email.

Lauzen said Nagel is an experienced editor.

“I do not interfere with his judgments of what to put in the Kane County Connects,” Lauzen said. “For example, I did not ask him to post the announcement. After discussing it with him, he intends not to post any links for similar events in the future.”

As to Nottke’s ethics complaint, Lauzen said, “We all live and learn.”

Nottke was chairwoman of the Batavia Township Republicans four years ago, and also volunteered for the Kane County Republicans,

she said.

Nottke said she filed the complaint as an advocate for good government.

“In light of the pending investigation at the Kane County Clerk’s Office and the fiasco at Animal Control, it would appear to be an incredible act of arrogance or ignorance to allow a primary political fundraiser to be advertised in a taxpayer funded newsletter,” Nottke wrote in an email response.

Nottke was referring to an ongoing ethics investigation by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office into County Clerk Jack Cunningham and a former deputy clerk, Geneva resident Jeff Ward, for using the county’s servers and email to work on Cunningham’s primary campaign.

Nottke also was referring to the resignation in May of former interim director of Animal Control Robert Sauceda amid a probe of personnel issues.

“Mr. Lauzen ran on a platform espousing integrity and his high moral standards,” Nottke’s email stated.

“He was going to ‘drain the swamp’ of cronyism and ‘pay to play’ and that he was going to restore integrity to county government.”

dents who graduated, transferred, or were dismissed from special services.

Special education records may include reports of psychological and social work

evaluations, multidisciplinary planning conferences, annual reviews, copies of Individualized Education Programs, as well as other relevant information.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An ethics complaint was filed Thursday against Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and Community Outreach Coordinator Rick Nagel, alleging that Lauzen’s political fundraiser was listed in the Kane County Connects e-newsletter.

The complaint was filed

by Batavia Township resident Ellen Nottke to Grant Wegner, the county’s interim ethics adviser.

Nottke’s complaint alleges that when Nagel listed Lauzen’s annual political fundraiser, the Porky Picnic, in the newsletter’s daily calendar of events, both violated the county’s ethics ordinance.

“After review of these documents, you will agree that the Kane County ethics ordinance has been violated, and you will refer this matter to the Kane County State’s Attorney,” Nottke’s letter states.

Under the newsletter’s “events this week,” the Porky Picnic on Aug. 9 was listed all week, according to printout of the site included in the ethics complaint.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com When the Kane County Office of Emergency Management set out to add a Humvee to its fleet, it wanted to do so without using taxpayer dollars.

As Assistant Director Phil Spicer put it, that was “our one and only rule.”

The office had been considering getting a high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicle for search-and-rescue purposes for a while, Spicer said, naming the 2011 blizzard and regular flooding at the same several communities as motivation.

During winter events, OEM Director Don Bryant said, a Humvee can provide transportation for stranded motorists, who likely won’t be dressed for snowmobiles. And during floods, Spicer said, it can go through 30 inches of standing water – capabilities the office’s standard Dodge Ram would not have.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office’s involvement in the Law Enforcement Support Office, or LESO, furthered the project, Spicer said. LESO originated from the 1997 National Defense Authorization Act, which allows LESO to transfer excess U.S. Department of Defense property to law enforcement agencies across the country.

Through its partnership with the sheriff’s office, emergency management obtained two Humvees – one will be used for spare parts – from the Missouri National Guard Joint Force Headquarters last year, Bryant and Spicer said.

And so began the process of repurposing the Humvee for OEM’s needs.

The vehicle started with “nothing in it other than the four seats,” Spicer said.

Now, it is equipped with such features as emergency lights, communication tools, lockable storage and 12-volt scene lighting. The adjustable light – it pans and tilts – is

He and Bryant said the office stuck to its rule about using no taxpayer dollars for the project by getting help from volunteers and more than $20,000 in donations.

“That’s an achievement in and of itself,” Bryant said.

While the Humvee will require ongoing costs for fuel and maintenance, Bryant doesn’t expect it will increase his budget because it will share duties with another vehicle in his fleet.

The Humvee is stored at OEM’s vehicle facility at the former sheriff’s complex on Fabyan Parkway, Bryant said.

“It’s probably being treated the best it’s ever been treated,” Spicer said.

Since it made its first pub-

lic appearance at the Campton Hills Safety Fair in June, the Humvee has participated in such events as the North Au-

rora Days Emergency Vehicle Lights and Sirens Parade and National Night Out. But Bryant knows it is a

matter of time before an emergency requires its services.

“It’s comforting to know we have it,” he said.

Geneva’s Panera Bread to relocate for drive-thru

The move would not happen until next summer, said Eve Metheny, director of brand marketing for Hamra Enterprises, which operates 33 Panera Bread cafes in the Chicago area.

“With Midwest weather – real winter – especially with

families,” Metheny said.

“If you have two kids and a mom you want convenience.

You don’t want them not to visit because they have kids or it’s a winter day.”

Metheny said she did not know if the 5,000-square-foot building would have to be remodeled, retrofitted or torn down to be repurposed for Panera.

“It’s a great building,” Metheny said. “I think it’s a great location. The current one has limited parking during lunch and dinner, our peak time. This [new location] will be really great for our customers.”

GENEVA – Specially designed play houses and dog houses will be built as part of a partnership between Geneva-based Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation and the Northern Illinois Homebuilders Association.

The houses will be built for a raffle that will benefit Changing Children’s World. Proceeds will fund parenting programs, including those for teen parents.

The foundation works with parents to improve the social/emotional, learning and self-control (full well-being) of children.

The houses will be on display at key events in Kane and DuPage counties, including the city of St. Charles RiverFest, Firing up the Fox, the Batavia Block Party and the St. Charles flea market.

Tickets are on sale. The first draw will be Sunday and a final draw will be Sept. 28.

request for proposals for such a position. This consultant will help the county as it selects an electric supplier, he said. The county hopes to secure lower rates than what ComEd offers, Anderson said, but the potential savings won’t be known until the bidding process.

“It will be very competi-

tive,” he said, noting he already has gotten several calls from different providers.

While the county intends to collect fees to recover administrative costs for the program, Anderson has said the intent isn’t to cut into savings.

Board member Deborah Allan, D-Elgin, asked how many

households and businesses the electric aggregation program is expected to serve. Anderson said the county doesn’t know the numbers yet – that information will come from ComEd – but the county sent about 15,000 letters before the referendum about the program went to ballot.

Removing the additional 900 parkway ash trees would cost an estimated $126,000, Village Administrator Steve Bosco said. The village is finishing up removing approximately 300 dead ash trees from parkways.

After the additional trees are removed, a nominal num-

ber of trees would remain that are either healthy or being treated by a resident, Bosco said.

“This would catch us up and get rid of almost all of the ash trees,” Bosco said. “From everything I’ve heard, treating a tree just delays the inevitable.”

The village will be able to pay for the additional tree removal through building permit revenues which have been greater than anticipated this year, Bosco said. Those revenues also will cover the replacement of the 300 trees that have already been removed.

If approved, the trees would be replaced this fall, he said.

The village plans to have further discussions on how to replace the additional 900 parkway trees.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department will participate in a Labor Day weekend “impaired driving crackdown” campaign, with special emphasis on the period between midnight and 3 p.m., according to a news release.

The 2014 Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” event will focus “on the deadliest time of day for motor vehicle fatalities,” according to the release. “The intensified enforcement effort against the overwhelming number of late-night impaired drivers and seat belt-law violators em-

phasizes the disproportionate number of traffic deaths occurring during late-night hours.”

According to the release, the law-enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Transportation Safety, and it runs concurrently with a media campaign that will remind motorists, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and to “Click It or Ticket.”

St. Charles Police recommend designating a sober driver and not letting friends and family drive impaired as two of several simple steps to avoid a tragic crash or an ar-

rest for impaired driving.

According to the release, there is data from IDOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that suggests the midnight to 3 a.m. timeframe is the deadliest time on Illinois roads.

The data also shows this time of day has the highest percentage of alcohol involvement and the lowest occupant restraint use, the release stated.

“The numbers do not lie,” the release stated. “To help prevent fatalities on Illinois roadways, we are stepping up our late-night enforcement efforts, making sure impaired drivers are off the road and motorists are buckled up.”

NORTH AURORA – The Village of North Aurora is looking at removing an additional 900 infested parkway ash trees this year.

Village trustees will discuss the issue at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. The emerald ash borer is a destructive, nonnative pest that feasts on ash trees. The first case in Illinois was found in June 2008 within The Windings subdivision in Campton Township.

The infestation happens when emerald ash larvae bores through the bark and into the area where nutrient levels are high. As a result, the tree no longer is able to transport water and nutrients to where they is needed.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Park District’s preschool, New Horizons, is accepting registrations for the 2014-15 school year, which runs from Sept. 2 to May 22.

Let’s lighten up on prodigal sons and daughters Remember Jesus’s prodigal son parable? A father hands his two sons their inheritance.

One stays home and works diligently for old papa. The profligate brother blows all his cash in Las Vegas – or the biblical parallel. When broke, the big spender returns home where his overjoyed, loving dad throws him a party, confounding and angering the conformist brother.

The lesson teaches us first how easy it is to appreciate those who do what we expect; what father wouldn’t love his stay-at-home, hard-working son?

What shocks most readers is Dad’s forgiving and loving behavior toward his returning reprobate son. Where’s the rage, the rejection? Instead, he hugs him.

President Lincoln put the prodigal son’s message into

practice, after the Civil War, directing northerners to show “malice toward none.”

English professor Grant L. Voth suggests this parable demonstrates “ ... God’s concern for the lost, the lowly and the outcast.” With the New Testament, Voth explains, literature departs from previous Greek and Oriental narratives wherein gods favor the powerful and beautiful Achilles-type hero. The Sermon on the Mount illustrates God’s concern “ ... for the lost, the straggler, the ordinary ... .”

Voth’s lecture put me in mind of the ongoing dialogue in the Kane County Chronicle’s “Sound Off” feature about undocumented Mexican immigrants and Central American child refugees fleeing torture, rape, murder and forced conscription.

Disgruntled callers insist their parents or grandparents “picked up English when first going to school,” as simply as collecting a dropped pencil.

One summer, my parents enrolled me when I was a preteen in a German-speaking Swiss school where I learned firsthand that frustrating, frightening classroom experience; imagine watching a foreign language movie without English subtitles. A bilingual course would have made language acquisition faster – and other classes less daunting.

The issue of undocumented immigrants and child refugees demands complex, thoughtful solutions; finger-pointing and pigeonholing divide, not unite, our country, our community.

As one cogent opinion writer in the Chronicle offered, “We are so much better than this pointless fear ... .”

Casino’s cautionary tale BLOOMBERG NEWS From the day it opened in April 2012, Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City loomed as a shimmering $2.6 billion monument to misguided optimism.

Now, deeply unprofitable, it plans to close. Its saga illuminates misconceptions about the relationship between gambling and government.

Casinos are not always a savior for state and local budgets. In the months before Revel opened, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was brimming with confidence about the revenue the resort would bring, even after the state had to guarantee $261 million in tax credits to restart construction on the project when its original investor, Morgan Stanley, walked away.

much business as Atlantic City’s gambling revenue continued its long decline. Now, in bankruptcy for the second time, it’s one of four gambling houses in the city expected to close this year, taking with them nearly 8,000 jobs.

As casino competition intensifies – more than two dozen have opened on the East Coast since 2004, with another 12 planned – reality is hitting home elsewhere, too. In Delaware, the legislature has approved back-to-back bailouts of the state’s casinos after they threatened layoffs.

A recent study found that, on average, casinos actually have a “small but negative net impact” on state revenue. That’s likely to worsen as competition increases – and states should recognize how precarious such revenue is.

GENEVA – Two squad cars were damaged in a fender-bender in the Geneva Police Department’s parking lot, but no one was injured, according to crash reports.

Officers Daniel Yates, 39 and Mark Russo, 40, were both driving 2011 Ford Crown Victorias at 6:47 p.m. Aug. 7 when the crash occurred, reports state.

Yates was backing out and Russo, driving the wrong way in the parking lot, did not see Yates backing out and the two vehicles crunched fenders – the rear of Yates’ patrol car hit the front driver’s side fender panel of Russo’s patrol car, according to the crash report.

Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said the officers were responding to an emergency report of domestic battery.

“The cars were drivable, and there were no injuries,” Passarelli said. “They responded in a normal manner and dealt with the accident report later. They were not driving fast.”

It cost nearly $6,000 to repair both cars, Passarelli said.

Neither officer was ticketed because the parking lot is private property and tickets do not apply – even the arrows indicating one way are not enforceable, Passarelli said.

“We’re glad the officers were not injured,” Passarelli said. “Like we tell everyone, cars are fixable, and we move forward from there.”

“I’ll run into somebody 10 years later and I can’t remember what I remember them from or which sport they played for me because I’ve done so many,” Ross said.

As Ross takes the reins of his fifth career sport at Geneva, consider that fair warning to girls golfers he’ll see in future interactions at the supermarket. If counting strokes borders on tedious, however, counting sports always brings a smile.

“He’s done a good job in all the sports that he’s had,” Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer said, “and I think it’ll be the same thing with golf.”

Don’t say Ross isn’t doing something he went to school for. Since 2000, the physical education teacher has coached Vikings boys soccer, girls

for his return to the Tri-Cities, where he started a family.

Ross served as Eric Hatczel’s assistant last season but took the head coaching position when Hatczel moved to the boys golf program after Bill Koehn retired.

“I’m certainly very excited to be able to take on another head coaching position,” Ross said. “I feel comfortable in that role. I know the girls from last year, so I’m even more comfortable knowing that I know all the kids, so that makes it an even smoother transition.”

Ross’ eclectic pursuits mirror his busy Batavia upbringing. He competed in soccer, track and basketball as a Bulldog after balancing those sports with tennis and baseball as a child.

He first embraced golf as an adult but plays regularly in leagues.

As Ross proves, specialization can be a foreign concept for coaches. Last school year, the counterpart at his alma mater, Batavia’s Tim Kauffmann, considered juggling a girls golf assistant position with his coaching duties in the boys basketball and baseball programs.

Not wanting to compromise his time for lesson plans, he stayed with two sports but followed the girls golf team under then-coach Morgan Connell. The first few days of tryouts and practices this week have kept Kauffmann buzzing.

“Just watching the kids compete. It’s awesome to see them mature into the great athletes that they are now,” he said.

Warrior Wishes reach links Inaugural golf scramble benefits STC-based nonprofit FROM THE TEE Kevin Druley St. Charles-based entrepreneurs Craig and Matt Steichen stand just a few weeks away from celebrating the second anniversary of Operation Warrior Wishes.

“It’s hard to explain,” Craig Steichen said, “but one day you’re thinking it was yesterday and the next you think, ‘Wow, it’s already been two years.’ ” What began as a father-son challenge to see a game in each NFL stadium during one season grew rapidly into a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization that helps wounded veterans and their families attend sporting events nationwide.

On Aug. 25, the Steichens will welcome another barometer for measuring time, as Operation Warrior Wishes’ inaugural golf scramble will be at Royal Hawk Country Club in St. Charles.

As of Thursday, 16 foursomes had registered for the event, hovering closely to the Steichens’ initial goal of 25.

Cost is $125 a golfer or $450 for a foursome, with the package including greens and cart fees, plus a dinner banquet.

Hole sponsorships remain available, as well, at rates of $2000, $500 and $250.

All proceeds benefit Operation Warrior Wishes and its 2014 NFL campaign, which begins with the Sept. 4 season opener between the host Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers.

Current sponsorships include a Firestone hole in which two tires are placed on the green. A ball landing in either one nets the golfer a prize.

then-ESPN personality Rick Reilly delivered a video essay about the endeavor on a “Monday Night Countdown” around Veteran’s Day. Ditka, a co-host on the show, urged the Steichens to contact him.

He later became Warrior Wishes’ first donor.

Major League Baseball since has reached out to the Steichens, who also have began servicing families of fallen soldiers. A documentary about Warrior Wishes also is near release.

Craig Steichen, a semi-retired salesman, and Matt Steichen, a banker, are eager to see how the golf fundraiser boosts Warrior Wishes, although still a tad cautious.

“We want to be big in scope,” Craig Steichen said, “but we don’t want to be a huge organization that’s going to have 50 employees and that kind of thing.”

Boys and girls prep golf tryouts began this week on many of the same courses where some players participated in IJGA or city summer tournaments.

While such players usually are locks to be part of their schools’ respective cores – let alone the top six – they also set themselves apart with early-season poise.

“They’re used to the pressure and the competition better,” St. Charles East girls coach Rod Osborne said. “They may be used to it a little more than those who haven’t stepped into that competitive atmosphere yet. So the others will learn how to handle that as the season goes on, hopefully.”

Catcher/outfielder joins team after being promoted from Short-A Boise

With Zagunis coming in, catcher/infielder Ben Carhart was promoted to Daytona while outfielder Kevin Brown was sent down to Boise.

In Boise, Zagunis mostly caught while also playing some outfield and DH. Zagunis will have a little more than two weeks to adjust to Midwest League competition before attempting to help the Cougars in the playoffs, which they qualified for with a firsthalf division title.

In the meantime, Zagunis said he looks forward to large crowds like the ones he saw Thursday, with 11,202 fans in attendance.

“That’s the biggest thing I heard is big crowds, a big difference from Boise to here,” Zagunis said.

Of more immediate concern was his sleeping arrangements.

Speaking a little more than an hour before the game, Zagunis wasn’t sure what his lodging situation would be. He knew this much – after a morning flight and hustling to the ballpark, hitting the pillow was going to be a priority.

“It’s been a long day,” Zagunis said. “I’ve been up since 5:30-ish [a.m.]”

Carhart became the 11th Cougar this year to be promoted. He was a mainstay for the Cougars this season, driving in 43 runs while playing in 102 games, third on the team behind Jacob Rogers and Carlos Penalver.

“Incredible teammate and incredible human being,” Johnson said of Carhart. “He’s a blessing as a manager … we wouldn’t be anywhere close to where we’re at without him.”

Sleepy start, good finish Quad Cities starter Troy Scribner retired the first 14 Cougars he faced before third baseman Chesny Young singled sharply to center field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

An off-speed specialist, Scribner appeared to have Thursday’s game in hand until the bottom of the eighth, when Cougars center fielder Trey Martin smashed a three-run homer en route to the 4-1 victory.

It was only Martin’s second home run of the season, his first being a grand slam.

“He’s been pretty close for the last couple of days and finally connected on one,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said.

“I’m sure that felt really good, and obviously a huge hit for us.

GENEVA – Mark Zagunis arrived in Geneva on Thursday with an impressive pedigree but humble expectations.

The Cubs’ third-round pick in June’s draft, the catcher/ outfielder out of Virginia Tech isn’t counting on vaulting atop of the team’s pecking order behind the plate.

“There’s a bunch of talented catchers here ahead of me so any chance to get on the field, I’m just going to try my best and see what happens,” said Zagunis, promoted Thursday from Short-A Boise.

After the Cougars’ 4-1 comeback win over the Quad Cities River Bandits, manager Mark Johnson said Zagunis likely will see most of his time in the outfield and at DH while Victor Caratini and Cael Brockmeyer

handle much of the catching responsibilities.

Zagunis became the third 2014 Cubs draft pick to arrive in Kane County, following firstround pick Kyle Schwarber (since promoted to Daytona) and infielder Chesny Young.

The highlight of Zagunis’ brief professional career to date came Mark July 14 when he Zagunis hit for the cycle in Boise’s win against Spokane.

Zagunis, 21, batted .299 with two home runs and 27 RBIs in 41 games at Boise, where he was a Northwest League All-Star.

“I’m definitely excited,” said Zagunis, who was not in the Cougars’ lineup Thursday as they capped their three-game series sweep of Quad Cities.

"I know a lot of them did some good things, and I know there are a couple things from all of them that we've got to get sewn up a little bit," Carey said. "But I've got to look at [the film] and I'll know a lot more."

Matt McIntosh took the field first, while he, Drew Hare and Anthony Maddie got time with the first and second team.

All three said they did things they liked and things they didn't like.

Maddie said he liked it when the tempo of the offense was fast. He had long touchdown passes to Juwan Bresca-

Hare said he felt like he ran the offense well for the most part and made good decisions.

"That's always a plus," Hare said. "If worse comes to worse and we have to punt and kick field goals, we've been in worse situations."

McIntosh was fairly efficient and said he thought it went pretty well, but said he missed about two or three throws he needed to hit.

One noteworthy performance on offense came from junior running back Keith Harris Jr., who had some nice runs, including a long touchdown scamper of about 70 yards. He suffered an ankle injury last season and missed spring practice and has been limited during camp with a hamstring injury.

"It's nice to be a quarterback handing off to him," McIntosh said. "He's a great running back. We have a boatload of running backs that we can hand the ball off to and they're going to do something with it.

It's a great asset to our team."

The season-opener against Presbyterian was exactly two weeks from Thursday's scrimmage. Earlier this week, Carey said the coaching staff would consider splitting up the reps differently depending on how the scrimmage went.

McIntosh said the scrimmage was big in terms of the competition.

"The coaches love to see you in live situations," he said.

"The quarterbacks weren't getting hit, but they love to see you in live situations and see how you do and see how you move the ball and see how consistent you are."

Fresh beginnings as school year starts JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry Whatever happened to Jerry Anderson and Ron Schaeffer?

Remember the big red brick haunted edifice, now completely vanished, that was Haines Junior High School at East Main and Seventh Avenue?

I can’t recall a school bell but would not hear it anyway back on the West side.

Many of us had documented that one or both parents knew that building as their high school. The campus consisted of a postage-stamp patch of grass in front, Polly’s store and our gym, a block away at Lincoln School.

There was an almost foot-high bulge in the floor on the first floor. Home economics was on the top floor and consisted of a take-your-turn, pedal-driven Singer sewing machine (made our aprons, potholders and graduation dresses) and a series of gas driven hotplates for making eggs benedict.

Our principal, Miss Munhall, had perfected the art of the fire-in-

eye lunge toward any fool who had a messy desk or failed to recognize a prepositional phrase. She deserves credit for qualifying me for an exemption from English 101 at college.

Although my desk is untidy now, I do feel guilty.

The now George E. Thompson building was high school for us.

The wonder of it all: lockers (someone earned a lifelong nickname as the distributor of mice in said lockers), varsity basketball played on the auditorium stage and the glory of a new gym, as a part of the attachment of the new Haines and a cafeteria showed progress as we moved from no frills/ old buildings to a new plateau.

High school brought a whole load of fresh friends from St. Patrick’s.

We missed meeting the many girls who joined the Mounties.

A hearty welcome went out to Albert VanThournout and Corey Christiansen, Bill Armstrong and those from afar, such as Caryl Tonn from Iowa and Sissel Nordli who was on exchange from Norway (she keeps in touch, and we pray for her health).

WHEELS Affordable Corolla excels at fuel economy Toyota’s Corolla is one of those small cars that excels at certain essentials, but you wish there was just a little bit more. No matter. The Corolla remains the world’s compact car sales leader.

A big essential is fuel economy.

During a test week in an S model of the 2014 front-wheel-drive, four-door, five-passenger compact sedan, regular unleaded gasoline usage averaged 31.5 miles per gallon.

The fuel tank holds 13.2 gallons of gasoline. On the basis of the tested fuel usage, one could travel 415.8 miles before pulling up to a gas pump.

The 1.8-liter, 132-horsepower, inline four-cylinder engine is no torque demon on wheels, but it accelerates well from stop signs or while passing slower traffic on highways. During the test week, two persons were aboard, air conditioning was in use and the weather was mild with no headwinds.

The car is light at 2,865 pounds.

The manufacturer trusts the reliability of the engine which is mated to a continuously variable transmission, as the powertrain warranty is five years or 60,000 miles. Although the CVT does not provide the sportiness of a stick trainy, there are paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for that “feel” of a manual transmission.

The $19,000 S model has a piano-black front grille with an upper honeycomb and a lower comprised of horizontal bars. It is a strong look and is unique to the S and not the L, LE and LE Eco models. The S also has an integrated rear spoiler and front fog lights, a chrome exhaust tip, color-keyed exterior mirrors and door handles, leather-trimmed steering wheel and a 3.5-inch multi-information display on the dashboard.

It shares niceties with the less expensive $16,800 L, $18,300 LE and $18,700 LE Eco, such as Bluetooth, cruise control, backup camera, automatic climate control with pollen filter, power windows, door locks and exterior mirrors, intermittent wipers and rear defroster, keyless remote entry, and a six-speaker sound system, including USB port, iPod connectivity, AM and FM high definition radio, MP3 and compact disc players.

The seats are firm and the ride is OK. The interior trim is soft to the touch and not a hard plastic. The tested S model had several shortcomings.

The rear seats were not split and fold for access to the trunk. The trunk, at 13 cubic feet, is not that large and more storage space would be nice. Also, the rear seat did not have a pull-down armrest complete with cup holders. It did have a cup holder (dual), but it was recessed into the center console separating the two front seats. And the doors had beverage holders (molded), too, so a place to temporarily store a water bottle is not an issue. Even so, a center pull-down is more useful and, the pull-down could be engineered to become a pass-through to the trunk for carrying longer items, such as fishing or ski poles.

One of the front seatbacks came with a storage pocket. The other (the

driver’s) did not.

A $1,510 option package includes quite a bundle of goodies such as a navigation system, satellite radio with up-to-date weather and traffic, plus pushbutton start. A power moonroof with sliding sunshade is an $850 standalone option.

Besides the powertrain, basic warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles.

Even with a shortcoming or two, sales of the reliable Corolla are dramatic. More than 40 million Corollas have been sold worldwide, which makes it the world’s most popular compact sedan. Sales began in 1966.

When looking for a new car Toyota is at the top of the list if the shopper favors reliability over style or fast acceleration. This sedan fits the bill for practical and reliable. Considering that Toyota sales in the U.S. are up 5 percent this year, it is obvious more and more drivers are opting for practical over flashy.

On the plus side this compact

sedan has a lot of room. With 41.4 inches of leg room in the rear it is almost the same as that of the 42.3 inches in front. Midsize sedans rarely have rear leg room in the 39 to 40 inch range and, for that matter, few large sedans do. Plus, Corolla’s front seat leg room is just an inch or two short of that officially provided by a large sedan. Not bad for an economically-priced compact sedan, especially of you have a family or usually transport rear-seat passengers. Three children could fit in the back seat. No problem.

Priced less than $20,000, Toyota offers a lot of safety features, including eight airbags, an antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, seatbelts and headrests with whiplash protection, anchors and tethers for child seats and daytime running lights. Those features, in addition to the backup camera, also offered in the lower-priced models are appealing. This sedan is aimed at a young family with children who favor reliability and safety over style and speed.

‘The Giver’ is the original ‘Hunger Games’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now If you’re tired of all of these futuristic, post-catastrophe movies adapted from books about hard-headed youth rebelling against convention, maybe you should give this one a try.

“The Hunger Games,” “Divergent,” blah blah blah. They’re formulaic and predictable and, by the way, their authors – Suzanne Collins wrote “The Hunger Games,” Veronica Roth wrote “Divergent” – shamelessly “borrowed” from Lois Lowry, the author of “The Giver,” which was published way back in 1993. A variety of the usual problems (finding the money, getting the script just right, etc.) kept “The Giver” from being made first. Jeff Bridges bought the film rights about 18 years ago, with the thought of having his father Lloyd play the old man of the title. It’s ironic that enough time has passed that Bridges himself is now in that role.

What has resulted, after five tries at the script by different people, is a strong and mostly faithful adaptation of a good book – one that falls under the category of “young adult” fiction but is certainly accessible and of interest to adult readers.

Same goes for the film, even though it’s been Hollywoodized to a degree. (Translated: The film has Meryl Streep playing a strong-willed villain in a part that has been overly and unnecessarily expanded from the book.)

The story takes place well into the future, “after the ruin,” when society has undergone some major changes. There are “communities” here and there that consist of “sameness.” The

“The Giver” is directed by Michael Mitnick and rated PG-13. people in charge, referred to as the Elders, have made sure that there’s no room for any kind of nonconformity or spontaneity.

Everyone is one color (actually there is no color, and much of the film is in black and white), everyone dresses alike, everyone acts alike, there’s no such thing as weather. One day is the same as the next. People are assigned to different jobs, based on whatever capabilities show through their uniform upbringing. But all is kept on an even keel, for everyone’s supposed betterment.

Because they know no other way of life, everyone is happy, or at least content.

Even young Jonas (Brenton Thwaite) who, along with his younger (unrelated) sister, is living in a family unit with their designated “parents,” is fine. Until, when he reaches the end of his childhood (in the book

it was age 12; in the film it’s about 18, yet that change works fine), he’s notified of his life assignment. But it’s not like any of the normal jobs that his friends are getting, Jonas has been chosen by the powers that be to become the community’s “Keeper of Memories,” and will be trained for his position and taught “the secret history of the world” by the longtime current Keeper, now in his new role as the obviously distraught Giver (Jeff Bridges).

This is a place where adults that aren’t in power act like robots, just doing what they’re supposed to do.

There’s some warmth within the family units, but there’s no such emotion of or word for love. And youngsters moving into adulthood are strongly encouraged to act the same way, or they could be candidates for “release” from the community, after which they would go to live

in a place called Elsewhere.

The movie zips right along, featuring simple, streamlined storytelling, just as the book does, and it exudes a quiet creepiness.

Something is just not right about this village, but we’re not sure what, and the film continually grows darker, both for the innocent Jonas and for viewers.

At its heart, it’s a comingof-age story, but demands are made of Jonas to grow up a lot faster than he ever expected to, or perhaps is able to. Newcomer Brenton Thwaites (recently seen as Prince Phillip in “Maleficent”) makes for an appealing protagonist, and he is quite good with a lot of wordless acting, requiring him to get a large range of emotions across with facial expressions, though he’s equally good when speaking.

The best scenes involve him, as the student, paired up with Bridges, as the teacher.

Knee, hip pain can be relieved without drugs or surgery Dear Doctor K: I have constant knee and hip pain. How can I relieve my pain without drugs or surgery?

Dear Reader: For several years, I asked myself the same question.

I had severe arthritis in my right hip, the result of a sports injury when I was a young adult. I was limping, and that made me feel old. Worse, I loved long walks and I just couldn’t do it anymore. But I didn’t want to have surgery.

The pain from a bad hip or knee can come from the hip or knee joint itself. But it also can come from tissues and muscles near the hip or knee that are strained by trying to compensate for the bad hip or knee.

Fortunately, there are ways to relieve pain without drugs or surgery. Three non-surgical treatments are particularly helpful: • Ultrasound. Therapeutic ultrasound sends sound waves into tissues near your hip or knee.

The sound waves help to increase blood flow, relax muscle spasms and aid healing. The therapist applies gel to your skin and glides

Strong thigh muscles can also take on some of the shock-absorbing work normally done by the knee. The proper balance of strength in surrounding muscles can hold the knee and hip joints in the most functional and least painful position.

Flexibility exercises (to stretch and relax specific muscles) are another important component of an exercise plan to improve joint

• Gait retraining. Knee and hip problems can cause pain, restrict joint movement or weaken muscles. To compensate, you may change the way you stand, walk or run. Over time, your modified standing, walking or running patterns may further injure your joints. A physical therapist can analyze your gait, or walking pattern, and help you learn to move more efficiently.

I eventually needed surgery: My hip joint was basically destroyed. I’m glad I had the surgery, but I’m also glad I was able to get relief from non-surgical treatments. For some of my patients with hip or knee pain, the non-surgical treatments are all they ever need.

Girl bullies can be vicious Dr. Wallace: It seems like whenever there is a mention of bullies it is about boy bullies. A lot of people don’t believe it, but there are a lot of girls who have been bullied by other girls.

Girl bullies can be very vicious and sometimes they are even worse than the boy bullies They trip you, push you down the stairs, pull your hair, grab your books and throw them around, and that’s not to even mention the mean and nasty things they say to you and even spread untrue rumors about you.

I should know because I was bullied at my old school, but now I’m in a new school and I’m not being bullied here.

I can’t believe how happy I am now at my new school, and I look forward to going back in September! – Nameless, Springfield, Massachusetts Dear Nameless: When we all talk about bullies, we do tend to focus exclusively on the guys. In our mind’s eye, the face of a bully is male.

This turns out to be a mistake. You are correct.

Some girls can and do inflict misery on other girls.

While the boys are more physical than girls and more likely to be involved in fights, girls rule when it comes to inflicting psychological violence on one another, according to a study of U.S. students in grades six through 10 published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Boys were more likely than girls to bully or be bullied, but not by a whole lot.

The fact is that girls don’t fear boys; they fear other girls.

Almost 14 percent of the girls surveyed reported that they had been bullied by a female weekly or even more often; another 22 percent said they’d been bullied once or twice during the school year.

While both boys and girls commonly bullied others with belittling looks or speech, the girls were more apt to use rumor or sexual comments, and some even would try to destroy another girl’s reputation.

Some of the most vicious fights on school grounds were between girls, according to the study.

The problem of girl versus girl is much more severe than parents and educators believe. Many people still see girls as “sugar and spice and everything nice.” Some are, but some aren’t!

It’s time parents, and especially school personnel, identify bullying behavior among females and seek to eliminate it.

I’m very pleased that you are enjoying your new school and that bullying is a thing of the past.

Most people don’t even realize the terror and trauma a student suffers from being bullied. Only the student who is being bullied can relate.

It’s a terribly lonely feeling.

In a few bridge deals, the defenders can lead declarer through a merry dance by tapping him -- leading side-suit winners to make declarer ruff in one hand or the other. This is usually done either to make declarer lose trump control, or to strand a long suit so that declarer cannot establish and run it.

This deal occurred during a social game and the auction is given as it happened. After the first round, I think South should have made a negative double to show his heart suit, not responded one no-trump without a sure spade stopper. North did not know what to do over two spades. Not expecting his partner to have four hearts, North wondered about three no-trump and five clubs. So he cuebid three spades to ask South if he really could control spades. Now South tried four hearts, which North, reading correctly, passed.

Yes, perhaps he should have chosen five clubs, an easy contract to make.

Against four hearts, West led an imaginative spade king. South ruffed in the dummy and should have immediately played on clubs.

But before leading the club king, he drew two rounds of trumps, leaving the ace on the board.

East erred by winning with his club ace. Yes, ducking risks South’s having only a singleton, but declarer would surely have played a club at trick two in that situation. If East had taken the second club and led another spade to tap the dummy, the contract would have gone down in flames.
