Downtown St. Charles Starbucks moves across river ST. CHARLES – A popular coffee chain has moved its downtown St. Charles location to west of the Fox River.

Starbucks Coffee is scheduled to open at 5:30 a.m. today at 101 S. First St., St. Charles, a company spokesperson wrote in an email Thursday afternoon.

The store will be open every day from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will have the Starbucks Clover Brewing System and larger community tables that can seat up to 14 people and are able to be reserved, the spokesperson wrote.

The store closed Tuesday at the 101 E. Main St. location within the historic Arcada Theatre building.

“Choosing a site for a new Starbucks location is a key element in providing customers with the Starbucks Experi-

ence, and we carefully consider many factors when opening a new store,” the spokesperson wrote. “Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers.”

The move places Starbucks next to the First Street parking garage and across the street from the third phase of the First Street redevelopment project.

The St. Charles City Council this summer approved a liquor license for Starbucks, so the company at some point can offer craft beer and wine selections as part of its Starbucks Evenings business model at the new downtown St. Charles location.

Starbucks is in the “very

early stages” of considering St. Charles for the Evenings menu, and the city-related paperwork is just one of the many steps it takes toward the process, the spokesperson wrote.

There already have been several inquiries into Starbucks’ former 2,355 squarefoot space at 101 E. Main St., but nothing solid yet, said Neil Johnson, managing director/ broker for the Geneva-based Sperry Van Ness/Landmark Commercial Real Estate LLC, which is leasing the space.

“It’s a really strong corner, and [at] the heart of downtown at a traffic signal,” Johnson said. “There’s every reason to believe a good, strong tenant will end up there.”

New Catholic outreach ministry targets 19 through 39 age group

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – On recent Friday evening, young adults began arriving at St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva, lining up to sign in and settling in at tables with bowls of M&Ms and popcorn and getting either soft drinks, wine or beer.

The guest speaker was the Rev. David Peck, pastor at St. John Neumann in St. Charles, who would focus on coping with stress and anxiety.

Peck shared 60 ways to reduce stress, such as mental prayer or meditation every day, be quick to forgive others and yourself, go on dates with your spouse, learn from your mistakes, pray for an increase of faith and remember you are not the center of the universe.

Welcome to The Catholic Brew, a new outreach ministry of St. Peter that promotes social events for young adults ages 19 to 39. Although it is based at St. Peter, its events are open to all – and many of the 30 who attended came from other communities and parishes.

Among them was Johan Hernandez, 19, of DeKalb.

“I like to grow in my faith,” Hernandez said. “Half of my family is not Catholic. On my dad’s side, they’re Pentecostal.

So learning about my faith is very important to me – because it’s very mine in that sense of knowing who I am and the way I love God and that I want to grow in my faith.”

Hernandez was encouraged to come by his friend, Ian Kidd, 19, of Sycamore, who was one of the 36 who attended the first Brew event earlier in the summer.

“It was very insightful,” Kidd said. “The guest speakers came in with a lot of life experiences, and they presented it well. It definitely made me think about things, and where

I’m going.”

Schaumburg resident Jared Trout, 28, said he liked to come because it was a good way to learn more about the church. ”And it’s a good way to network and get to know other people who are also Catholic,” Trout said.

South Elgin resident Caitlyn Dix, 26, said she was one of the 36 who came out for the Brew’s inaugural event earlier in the summer, which featured speakers on authentic love in a real world.

“They had the perspective of someone who is married and also someone who is single,” Dix said. “And the person who was single gave some practical tips [that are] … pretty helpful.

He laid out five tips for every day life – pray for the people you see every day – and that kind of thing really helped me a lot.”

Dix and Lara Ekstrom, 25, of Virgil, both said meeting other young adults who share the same faith was important.

“As a young Catholic woman, it is very hard to find other young Catholic people unless you have something [where] we can gather,” Ekstrom said.

“And it’s great to meet other young people ... [who] are going through the same kind of things I am.”

Isabel Chávez, 39, of Batavia, one of several volunteers helping set up and sign in the attendees, said ministries like this are important because young adults can lose sight of their faith between the ages of 20 and 30.

“I always felt a strong sense that young adult ministry is very important,” Chávez said.

“I went to a Catholic college, a Catholic high school, and I’ve always been immersed in all of that. And once coming home from college, it’s difficult because all your friends moved to different areas. I just felt it was

very important to keep young adult ministry in the area.”

Laurie Brown, a high school and young adult minister at St. Peter, said she and St. Peter’s pastor, the Rev. Martins Emeh, created The Brew this year featuring topical issues and social events, like the recent outing at a Cougars game.

The last event for the summer will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Peter Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva, in McLoughlin Hall. Deacon Bill Johnson from St. Patrick’s Church in St. Charles will teach prayer as an action step toward having a personal relationship with Christ and others.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles business has been remodeled from top to bottom, and residents are invited to see the results.

Eddie Caruso Hair Salon will have a grand re-opening from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 at 2400 E. Main St., Suite 109, St. Charles.

“I’ve done a complete makeover now – the shop looks absolutely beautiful,” Eddie Caruso said.

The oak finishings in the salon were replaced with black and white tones. The laminated hardwood floor was converted to metallic, commercial-grade epoxy, said Chris Cesario, Caruso’s son-in-law.

Cesario also had a large mural painted on one of the back walls that depicts a woman getting her bangs cut.

Cesario and his wife, Ashley – Caruso’s daughter – took over ownership of the store in March. Everyone agreed the space was outdated and needed a fresh look.

Strange also was required to go through alcohol and drug education after being charged by Geneva police in 2006 for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to court records.

BATAVIA – A Batavia fire lieutenant has been charged with aggravated domestic battery.

Ralph Strange, 50, of the 34W200 block of Sunset Drive near Batavia, was charged with one count of aggravated domestic battery, one count of aggravated battery to cause bodily harm and two counts of domestic battery.

As of Thursday afternoon, he was in custody in the Kane County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

Strange has worked for the Batavia Fire Department since 1990, according to Wendy Bednarek, director of human resources for the city of Batavia. She said Strange remains employed with the city but that city officials are monitoring the situation.

“We will address his employment status at the appropriate time,” Bednarek said. “His employment status hasn’t changed.”

An emergency order of protection against Strange was issued Wednesday, and it is in effect until Aug. 27. According to court records, Strange on or about Sunday Ralph Strange used a closed fist to punch a family member multiple times in the face, causing fractures. The incident happened in Batavia.

Court records also stated Strange caused bruises to the victim’s left arm and left knee after the initial incident, and he has been verbally abusive to the victim. The victim decided not to contact law en-

The Holmstad celebrates anniversary

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Margot Burgh said she could not imagine living any place else but at The Holmstad retirement community in Batavia.

“This is a place where you really feel at home,” said Burgh, who has been living at The Holmstad for 24 years.

Burgh was one of several residents who spoke Thursday about their experiences living at The Holmstad as part of a weeklong celebration of its 40th anniversary.

The Holmstad, at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway in Batavia, is administered by the nonprofit Covenant Retirement Communities.

Burgh is a World War II survivor, having come to the United States in 1947 from Germany.

“I came to the United States as a war bride,” she said.

She has lived at The Holmstad since 1991. For 18 years, Burgh also was a receptionist at The Holmstad.

“It takes a lot of people to make a village,” Burgh said.

Staff members at The Holmstad also spoke as part of a panel discussion, including Renee Sanchez, the administrative services coordinator. She helped organize this week’s anniversary activities.

Over the years, The Holmstad has had a number of notable guests including former first lady Barbara Bush, who visited in 1988, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke told residents.

Schielke noted Batavia has had its fair share of famous visitors, including the author Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain. Twain visited Batavia on June 29, 1869, he said.

“He spent the night and wrote a love letter to his future wife,” Schielke said.

For almost four months in 1875, Mary Todd Lincoln – the widow of President Abraham Lincoln – was a patient at Bellevue Place in Batavia, a sanitarium for women, Schielke said, after a trial found her to be insane.

In addition, Bernard J. Cigrand, the “father of Flag Day,” was a resident of Batavia and later, Aurora. He campaigned to establish a day to celebrate the adoption of the stars and stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.

Castro rebuffed that instruction, indicating her desire to have him convey the information instead.

She also criticized him for not preparing his staff to present at a meeting he was unable to attend.

“That is a failure on your end,” Castro said.

Russell’s resolution about the budget overage ultimately died for lack of a second. After the meeting, Russell characterized the meeting as “unproductive.”

He came prepared to talk figures and solutions, but emotions overruled county business, he said.

“I was not there to argue,” he said. “Unfortunately, others were, and I’m very disap-

pointed in that.”

Castro said Russell has made a lot of moves the committee wanted clarified.

GENEVA – Kane County Board members’ mounting frustrations with the coroner boiled over Thursday in a heated exchange.

“The problem here is you have not established trust with this committee,” said Cristina Castro, chair of the Judicial and Public Safety Committee.

Coroner Rob Russell was presenting a resolution to address an anticipated $56,065 overage in autopsies for this fiscal year when the tone changed and voices became raised.

Castro, D-Elgin, and board member John Martin, R-Geneva, said they were uncomfortable approving a budget adjustment this early instead of having Russell try to work within budget.

Russell asserted that nearly all of his budget is tied to mandates, and he has played with discretionary funds as much as he can, including laying off his administrative assistant.

“What is your solution?” he asked. “Because this is my solution.”

STEM and Business Buzz can silence creativity, dreams Quick: What classes are your children taking this year?

Unfortunately, clueless politicians, business moguls and education bigwigs believe only by pushing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and economics courses – while simultaneously deflating the humanities, social sciences and the arts flatter than Super Bowl footballs – America will survive. Why? First, an overreaction to low test scores. CNN broadcaster Fareed Zakaria’s “In Defense of a Liberal Education” admits: “The United States has never performed especially well on international tests. In 1964 ...

13-year-olds ... posted a significantly lower [math] score.”

And yet, Zakaria counters, America dominates in entrepreneurship and innovation. In “a 2014 Bloomberg measure of technology density ... ,” he writes, “the United States ranks first.”

In fact, a former minister of education in Singapore confesses, “ ... we are not able to test well [in] creativity, curiosity, a sense of adventure, ambition.’”

America traditionally touts those traits. An IBM survey of CEOs reports that creativity is the single most important leadership competency for enterprises facing global commerce today. Sir Ken Robinson, in one of the most-watched TED Talks ever, “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” posits creativity “... is as important in education as literacy ... .”

Secondly, people fear liberal arts stymie success. Bill Gates, a STEM advocate, has seemingly encouraged governors to subsidize “only those college departments that produce jobs,” according to author Tony Wagner in “Creative Innovators.” Many educators and parents buy that simplistic argument. One father I know influenced his children to take only courses leading to six-figure salaries – even though he despised every minute of his lucrative medical career.

Don’t believe the myth that liberal arts block success; instead, consider contradictory evidence: Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, exemplifies – according to Zakaria – “a classic liberal arts student,” noting that Zuckerberg, in his own words,

“That ‘Useless’ Liberal Arts Degree Has Become Tech’s Hottest Ticket” on Forbes.com profiles Stewart Butterfield, CEO of one of the “most glistening” of tech’s startups, who states, “‘Studying philosophy taught me ... how to write really clearly,’” just one example leading the Forbes piece to conclude, “software companies are discovering that liberal arts thinking makes them stronger.”

“A liberal education ... teaches you how to write, and writing makes you think,” Zakaria posits, then quotes Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder: “There is no way to write a six-page, narratively structured memo and not have clear thinking.”

Such “thinking” has impacted large STEM and research universities on the Forbes “Top Colleges Ranking 2015” list, giving “small, student-centric, liberal arts colleges ... the Gold and Silver medals.”

Besides helping students think clearly and creatively, a liberal arts curriculum may expand students’ potentials and reveal their passions.

“When work is strictly a job … you’re living mostly for the weekend and your hobbies,” Amy Wrzesniewski’s research at Yale’s School of Management shows. “[F]or those who pursue a calling ... what you do professionally fulfills you personally as well.”

Wealth means more than a big salary; it’s what money can’t buy that enriches life.

The bipartisan fix for making student BLOOMBERG NEWS If it makes sense for the government to help young people pay for college – and it does – then it also makes sense for the government to help them pay it back. On Monday, Hillary Clinton endorsed an idea that would improve both sides of this bargain.

It’s called income-based loan repayment, which sets monthly payments as a percentage of earnings. To be fair, it is not a new idea: President Barack Obama’s administration has proposed expanding the existing program, and Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio has introduced a bill in the Senate that would automatically enroll those with federal student loans into such a plan.

Clinton’s approach includes replacing the four existing in-

come-based plans with a single program, doing a better job telling students about income-based repayment (more than 25 percent use such a plan now) and making it easier to enroll. Payments would be capped at 10 percent of discretionary income, and any remaining loans would be forgiven after 20 years (25 for gradschool loans).

There are still points to work out. The best way to reach everyone who can benefit from income-based repayments is to make them the default option, which Rubio explicitly supports but Clinton doesn’t. Another question is whether repayments should be automatically deducted from borrowers’ paychecks – cutting the risk of default to near zero, but provoking concerns about government overreach.

a fixed number of years creates an incentive to earn less. The purpose of the program should be to make payments manageable, not to discharge them prematurely. A better approach would be to stop automatic loan forgiveness, and instead allow borrowers in genuine hardship to request an exemption.

But those questions are secondary. A college education remains an excellent investment, both individually and collectively. At the same time, the amount of student debt – some $1.3 trillion, with 1 in 6 borrowers delinquent or in default – is worrisome.

Income-based repayment plans allow students to better take advantage of opportunity and the government to better manage risk. It’s an idea that deserves the support of whoever is elected president next year.

Chronicle honors past in another Wiffle Ball Classic

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Kane County Circuit Judge Clint Hull delivered something nearly as enduring as one of his rulings on Wednesday night.

If not for the need to return it to Hull’s archives, sports reporter Chris Casey and I might still be thumbing through the scrapbook depicting the Wiffle Ball Classic games of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In those days, Hull and his youthful St. Charles chums battled a team of Chronicle staffers at a field one of the boys built at 1107 S. Third St. A new batch of bashers followed once that group grew older, but if the almighty scrapbook is to be believed, these parts hadn’t seen a Wiffle Ball Classic until game

VI on July 20, 1984.

That changed Thursday, when Casey, freelancer Chris Walker and I joined the braintrust of The Wifflot in seven innings of VII-th heaven.

For the record, Team Chronicle defeated Team Wifflot – Batavia 20-year-olds Andrew Martinez, Brad Speranza and Brandon Starcevich – 3-1. Hull believes it might be the first time the Fourth Estate prevailed.

No matter the result, the game fused the past, present and future of Wiffle ball in Chronicle Country.

Here’s a look at each: Hull emailed the Chronicle about the Wiffle Ball Classic two years ago, when we profiled the then- Batavia-based Wifflot and its business-savvy operators.

The organization since has shifted to Cornerstone Lakes Park after negotiations

with the West Chicago Park District. There’s also a Wifflot in Roselle, and a handful of other developments in the works in numerous reaches of the suburbs.

Martinez, The Wifflot’s founder and president, sure is putting his sports business administration and sports marketing studies at Waubonsee Community College to practical use.

The St. Charles Wiffle crew of the late 1970s had ingenuity, too. Keith Orland built the field, called “Yankee Stadium,” which rested on a lot adjacent to the Grathoff family home.

Pete Grathoff went on to become a sports reporter, and now covers baseball for The Kansas City Star.

“That is one and the same,” Hull said.

A more local celebrity of sorts, Pottawatomie Golf

Course assistant pro Bill Ogiego, also is an alumnus of Wiffle Ball Classics, and recently waxed nostalgic about the games during an otherwise busy morning on the course.

“It’s just one of those things that tells you about old town St. Charles,” Hull said. “I will still at various times be at various things and someone will recognize my name from back then, and someone will say, ‘Hey, you’re the Wiffle ball kid.

You’re the Wiffle ball kid.’”

Wow. And I thought the scrapbook had staying power. *** So maybe it’s a stretch to call Team Chronicle Wiffle ball’s “present,” but as the proud owner of a complete game and a two-run single, I’m comfortable making the call.

Still, things looked dicey

in the early going. A persistent wind blew in, which didn’t bode well for duplicating the firepower of Wiffle Ball Classic III, a 28-24 victory for the kiddos in June 1981.

When Martinez sat on a two-strike curveball for a line drive, solo home run to left in the bottom of the third, the mood temporarily grew even more dire as we fell behind, 1-0.

“You had a curveball going. I’ve got to give it to that one,” Martinez told me.

“I don’t know how I hit the other one out.”

Same here. Although my curveball grip is the same as the one illustrated on the side of many Wiffle ball boxes – index and middle fingers to the right of the outward-facing holes – it can be effective with some arm slot tinkering.

• WIFFLE BALL Continued from page 14 Martinez struck defensively later in the game, robbing the left-handed swinging Casey of a home run that would have netted valuable insurance runs. Adding insult to injury, he fired back to Speranza on the pitcher’s mound before Walker returned to first base.

Because The Wifflot plays two outs per inning, the double play ended the threat.

“I never thought I was going to catch it,” Martinez said. “I just put my hand out to see if I could grab it. It was an interesting game. I loved it.”

Walker and Casey were instrumental in starting separate double plays of their own. With runners on the corners in the top of the seventh, Casey ranged to his left to scoop up a grounder and start a game-ending DP. “I think after getting the home run taken away from me on a nice play (by Martinez), that was a fitting way for the game to end,” Casey said. “You always want to win, but it was a competitive game and that’s what you want. It was a fun, well-played game by both teams and hopefully we can schedule something again in the near future.”

ed on the Pawlowski family property near Batavia, no longer is in operation. Martinez said Ryan Pawlowski, a Batavia graduate like the rest of the operation’s brass, elected not to continue with The Wifflot, but zoning talks with Kane County representatives also paved the way for a move as the endeavor continued to grow and required parking and other capital improvements.

Martinez lauded the cooperation of West Chicago Park District officials Joe Urban and Danielle Wilson for assisting in The Wifflot’s transition.

While the West Chicago location sits on public land, The Wifflot also uses it for adult leagues, parties and company outings.

Sponsors help alleviate costs, which included about $3,000 to install the four-foot high wooden fence that spans 180 feet.

Glancing at Martinez and his assistant, Speranza, Starcevich said, “I think it’s pretty impressive that these two guys started with a little field in Ryan’s backyard and have expanded so much. …

It’s nice to see them succeed.”

Maybe next time, that will translate to the game between the lines. Yup, that was trash talk. The playful kind.

Here’s hoping it’s part of the impetus for a Wiffle Ball Classic VIII.

SPORTS SHORT Ramirez wants to finish career with Sox

CHICAGO – Alexei Ramirez does not know if this will be his final season with the White Sox, the only organization he has known since he arrived from Cuba nearly eight years ago.

But he knows what he wants.

“I want to be here. I want to finish my career here,” the 2015 All-Star shortstop said through a translator. “But I can’t control that.”

The Sox have a $10 million option for 2016 on Ramirez, one that, for much of a poor first half, looked like one to be avoided.

But Ramirez has turned his game around and, looking more like the productive player of old at bat and in the field, might make the decision more difficult than expected for the Sox. “That’s an option the team has,” Ramirez said. “If it were up to me, I would love to stay here.

The only thing I can control is my performance on the field.”

One other alternative would be declining the option (that comes with a $1 million buyout) and trying to re-sign Ramirez, who turns 34 in September, for less money.

And another option could be Tyler Saladino, who has won over management and fans with strong defense at third base, heady play and just enough offense (.237, three homers, two triples, four stolen bases) to hold down the No. 2 spot in the lineup he’s owned since being called up July 10 to face the Cubs.

A month later, the Cubs visit U.S. Cellular Field for three games this weekend, and Saladino hasn’t budged from the hot corner. His natural position is shortstop, and although No. 1 prospect Tim Anderson is coming along to good reviews at Double-A Birmingham, he’s probably a Triple-A season away from being major-league ready. If Ramirez is elsewhere next season, it’s not hard to envision Saladino moving over to shortstop at a club savings of $9.5 million.

“He has the defensive capabilities to play anywhere in the infield on an everyday basis,” general manager Rick Hahn said.

Center/linebacker Baylor Johnson goes one better.

“Yeah, running’s fun,” he said. “I don’t know. You hate the beginning, but then you finish, and I find a weird satisfaction in the burn.”

Away game: Geneva repeated its longstanding tradition of beginning preseason workouts off campus, but a funny thing happened on the way to Good Templar Park this time around.

A youth soccer camp populated a large area near the main entrance, in contrast to the Vikings’ 2013 and 2014 sojourns to the east side of town.

Good thing Geneva’s main practice field goes deeper into the park, through a path and under some trees.

“When we get down there, it’s really nice,” coach Rob Wicinski said. “There’s nothing down there. It’s really nice.

And the field is gorgeous.”

The Vikings quickly nicknamed the area, too.

“We call it Valhalla,” senior wide receiver Jack Wassel said. “It’s a Viking thing.”

Three of Jake Marczuk’s top four receiving targets from 2014 return to the Kaneland football team this fall.

Fellow senior Mitch Groen, who averaged 12.6 yards a catch on 25 receptions last season, is eager for his output to grow, and figures it might as well. He and Marczuk certainly have developed in other areas through the years.

“We’ve been playing together since third grade, so the chemistry is already there,” Groen said. “Just in practice every day and when we work out just helps. Getting more reps.”

Marczuk completed 55.8 percent of his passes (140 for 251) last season for 1,883 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, his first year guiding coach Tom Fedderly’s airbased spread attack.

Fedderly’s son, 2015 Kaneland graduate Connor Fedderly, led the Knights in receptions (61), yards (957) and touchdowns (12), but the offseason development of Groen, Tyler Paulson and Tanner Robertson leaves Marczuk and the rest of the offense confident.

Kaneland, which finished 4-5 last fall, also draws motivation from missing the postseason for the first time since 2007.

“It was good to get a year of experience, but now it’s time to build off that and really improve,” Marczuk said.

With 7-on-7s and individual camp sessions complementing his time at the Knights’ summer workouts, Marczuk can channel his share of offseason practice hours.

Event to honor 151st anniversary of Civil War KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Blackberry Farm in Aurora will commemorate the 151st anniversary of the American Civil War with a weekend-long event Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 16.

“Civil War Days” will consist of a full-scale reenactment on the grounds of Blackberry Farm, featuring simulated battles between Union and Confederate soldiers. Guest speakers and interpreters will stage numerous demonstrations of 1800s-era war life.

“The stories we’ll bring to life go beyond the battles; they’re about real people caught up in an unimaginable war – soldiers, civilians, enslaved people – all with a story to tell,” said facility manager Sandie Gilmer in a news release.

Fox Country Players theater group to host auditions for ‘Oliver’ KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – The Fox Country Players will host auditions for the musical “Oliver” on Thursday, Aug. 27, Saturday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 30, in the Auditorium of the Waubonsee Community College Sugar Grove Campus, located at Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive in Sugar Grove.

Adult auditions will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27 and 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 29.

Children will audition from 1 to 5 p.m.

Those auditioning should prepare a short song to sing and bring the sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. Cold readings from the script and a short dance will also be included in the audition process.

In the Tony Award-winning musical, Charles Dickens’ characters, including orphan Oliver and the gang of pick-pocket street urchins he falls in with, come to life through a score that includes songs, such as

“You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two,” “Consider Yourself at Home,” “Where is Love?” and “Food, Glorious Food.”

The cast will feature five male roles, five female roles, two teen girls, one teen boy, two featured children, an ensemble of children and an ensemble of adults.

Fox Country Players is also seeking production staff members and backstage technicians for the musical.

ADVICE Ex-friend replaces woman at holiday dinners Dear Abby: I had a close friend

from middle school into adulthood.

(I’ll call her Lacey.) We were each other’s maids of honor and best friends for years. A few years ago we had a falling out. She was going through a tough time and lashed out at me. When I tried to have a conversation with her to tell her I didn’t like how she was treating me, she told me to “have a nice life.”

Shortly after that, my youngest sister struck up a friendship with her and insisted that my parents invite her for Thanksgiving dinner. I told my mother I wasn’t comfortable with Lacey joining our family dinner, but Mother said it would be rude to not invite her.

I no longer join my family for holiday dinners. Is it wrong of me to not want my family to be so friendly with someone who was unkind to me? It seems odd to me that my former friend would pursue relationships with my

Of course, you can’t dictate whom your sister(s) can be friendly with, but you should explain to your parents how her inclusion has made you feel, so they’ll understand why you are absent.

When Lacey advised you to “have a nice life,” I hope you took her up on it and have made other friends.

punctuality is important. My husband and I are almost always at least a few minutes early for everything we do. However, it seems that almost everyone we know is late. Sometimes it’s five minutes, others it’s 20 to 30 minutes. And it’s not just people we know. Why do people think this is OK? – Amber In The South Dear Amber: I was raised the same way you were. My parents impressed upon me that it is disrespectful to keep people waiting, and that if a delay is unavoidable, the person who’s expecting me should be informed that I will be late. I’m not implying that someone must make an appearance at the stroke of the hour – a delay of 10 or 15 minutes is understandable. But to keep someone waiting longer than that is rude.

Team of health care professionals help in stroke recovery Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I began to describe the rehabilitation (“rehab”) treatment that often follows a stroke and explained why it is necessary for a husband’s recovery. Today, I’ll describe rehab institutions and members of the rehab health professional team.

If your husband’s doctor expects he’ll be able to make rapid gains, he likely will be transferred to a rehabilitation hospital. To benefit from this type of program, he must be able to engage in three or more hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy per day, five days a week. Stays in a rehab hospital typically are shorter than those in a skilled nursing facility.

But a skilled nursing facility may be a better option for someone who was weakened by health problems even before the stroke, and doesn’t have the strength to engage in rehab activities as often as expected in a rehab hospital.

On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve put a list of questions to ask when choosing a rehab facility. I hope they will help you in your discussions with your husband’s doctor.

As for the team of rehab professionals you and your husband will meet, in yesterday’s column I mentioned the case manager who

Here are the other members of the team, and how they can help someone to recover from a stroke: • A physiatrist is a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. A physiatrist often supervises a team of nurses and therapists to come up with a rehabilitation plan and evaluate whether it is working.

• A rehabilitation nurse will help your husband with taking medication on the right schedule, bathing, using the bathroom, and getting himself in and out of a wheelchair. He or she also will help explain things to relatives, friends and other caregivers.

• A physical therapist evaluates and treats disorders relating to movement, balance and coordination, and will help your husband regain strength and range of motion in his legs.

• An occupational therapist helps a stroke patient learn basic activities such as eating, bathing,

dressing and writing. He or she will help your husband learn techniques to compensate for a disability, such as learning to use adaptive equipment.

• A speech-language pathologist will help your husband improve his capacity to speak and understand speech.

• A recreational therapist will help your husband resume leisure activities that he enjoyed before his stroke. For example, a recreational therapist will help your husband find ways to play cards, read books or cook with special equipment, if that is required.

• A music therapist uses rhythm and music to help a person improve coordination and strength. Music therapists also work with speech therapists: Some stroke patients recover speech more rapidly if they sing the words than if they just speak the words.

Rehab institutions and health professionals should be able to help your husband recover some or all of the abilities that were lost following the stroke.

Father made huge mistake Dr. Wallace: My father caught me smoking when I was only 14. He told me (after a long lecture) that he would let me smoke when I was 17 if I quit until then.

Well, I agreed to stop immediately, and I did keep my promise. Then on my 17th birthday a few days ago, I lit up a cigarette in front of him at home, but instead of saying, “Good job, Son. You kept your promise, and now I’ll keep mine, and I won’t say a word when you light up,” he really surprised me when he broke his word and started ranting and raving and told me to put out the cigarette and not smoke again as long as I lived in his house.

I think my dad is wrong for not keeping his word. Do you agree?

– Dave, Atlantic City, New Jersey Dear Dave: Your dad made a big mistake saying that he would allow you to smoke when you turned 17. He probably thought that getting you to postpone such a nasty habit for three years might cause you to forget about it. Obviously, he was wrong, and you didn’t forget.

However, “ranting and raving” wasn’t the right response and congratulating you for starting on the road to addiction and poor health wouldn’t have been right either.

Dad needs to admit his mistake of three years ago, apologize, and tell you that he opposes your smoking at any age.

Dr. Wallace: Lately, I have had difficulty communicating with my mother. She used to ask me what I thought and encourage me to have an opinion about things. But now when I ask her to explain some-

What do you think about this? – Danielle, South Bend, Indiana Dear Danielle: Parents are usually in charge, and teens should do as they are asked, but Mom and Dad also have the responsibility of setting an example. As far as I am concerned, “because I said so” is never an adequate answer.

Dr. Wallace: My grandmother always buys me a gift that she thinks I’ll like, but I never do. My mother won’t allow me to exchange the gifts because she thinks my grandmother would be disappointed if she ever found out. Last year, grandmother gave me a sweater, but I’m not the sweater type, and I have never even worn it. I knew the store where she bought it and I could have exchanged it for a sweatshirt that I really liked and would have worn often.

Do you think I’d be offending Grandma if she buys me something this year that I don’t really like and I exchange it? – Nameless, St. Paul, Minnesota Dear Nameless: The purpose of a gift is to give the recipient joy and happiness. You should return the gift and exchange it for something you will really enjoy.

When you try a new bidding convention, probably a sequence will crop up that you didn’t discuss with your partner. Then you try to reason out its meaning using logic.

This week, we are studying New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor – one of a major – one notrump, two of the unbid minor by the responder is artificial, promises at least game-invitational values, and asks opener for more information. But what about this sequence, where responder first bids one spade, then jumps to three hearts?

That cannot be weak, because responder would rebid two hearts.

With a strong hand, responder would start with New Minor Forcing.

So, this indicates game-invitational values with two five-card or longer suits. South’s hand might look a tad weak, but the suits are great. North, with those wonderful major-suit honors, should have no qualms in bidding four hearts.

West leads the diamond ace and continues with the diamond king. South ruffs and drives out the spade ace. East exits safely with a diamond, declarer ruffs again, and West drops the queen.

Now South, before he loses trump control, must establish a club trick. But when he leads a club toward dummy’s king-jack, and West plays low, should South call for the jack or king?

West has shown up with nine points in diamonds, but could not open the bidding. He cannot have the club ace. Declarer must finesse dummy’s jack.
