Get off on the right foot with instructional dance classes

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com When the pitter-patter of little feet start tippy-tapping out a regular beat, perhaps it’s a sign that Hannah or Taylor are old enough to channel those rhythmic impulses into the recognizable patterns of actual dance steps.

Instructional dance classes are ideal ways to help young dancers try out different disciplines before committing to just one dance genre. Offered seasonally and structured in shorter, typically 30-minute sessions, instructional dance lessons explore the translation of rhythm and sounds through body movement and encourage creative interpretation of those impulses as children bring their imagination to life.

“These classes are ideal for the child who is just starting to get into dance,”

said Rosie Fasching, recreation supervisor for the St. Charles Park District. “They are a good way to learn about a specific style or diversify your background before committing to a St. Charles Dance Academy recital program.”

For the littlest dancers, beginning courses, such as “Tiny Tappers & Me” and “Tip Toes & Me,” help develop fine motor skills, balance and timing – the foundations for building strong, healthy bodies capable of dancing, running, twirling and skipping. Open to children as young as 18 months, such courses are often a child’s first introduction to park district programs and help them develop important social skills, such as following instructions, collaborating and cooperating with their fellow classmates. “Creative Dance” aimed at children 2½ to 4 years old helps stimulate imagination and encourage expression through interpre-

tive movements.

“Through dance, children learn to understand their body and pay attention to things like posture and balance,” Fasching said.

Dance Academy instructors Alison Cole, Gina Gerardi, Samantha Newman and Mary Trinco are experts at selecting music that will engage children and augment fancy footwork with props like twirlers and pom poms that further encourage eyehand and eye-foot coordination.

Slightly older dancers, ages 5 and older, have three new programs this fall that can help further enhance their love of dance. “Moves from the Big Screen” lets students duplicate moves they’ve seen in movies like “Footloose” or “Happy Feet.”

From a funky jazz trot to a hip-hopping street dance-off, participants will view clips of famous dance scenes and put together a few cool moves of

their own. The class will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23.

A trip to the ballet is a dream come true for budding ballerinas, and this year the park district is offering a special outing to see some of the greatest dancers in the world on stage as the Moscow Ballet performs the “Great Russian Nutcracker” on Dec. 6 at the Rosemont Theater.

Even better, participants will be treated to a meet-and-greet with some of the performers before the show!

What better way to end the year than with a celebration of happy feet? The park district’s new “Winter Break Dance Camp” for children ages 5 and older explores a variety of musical genres, from ballet to musical theater. The four-day camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday, Dec. 28 to 31.

WATCH OUT FOR FALLS Fall-related deaths have risen sharply among those in the 65+ age group over the past decade. Aside from muscular and nerve disorders that adversely affect balance and increase the risk of falls, impaired vision can also throw off a person’s balance. Eye disorders can blur or distort sight or even create gaps in a person’s field of vision. Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are two especially common culprits behind balance-related falls and injuries. In its early stages, glaucoma reduces side (peripheral) vision and, if left untreated, can lead to increasing blindness.

Diabetic retinopathy causes blurred central vision and “floaters” that leave holes in the field of vision. Annual eye exams can help preserve both vision and better balance.

P.S. Visual acuity less than 20/60, cataracts, decreasing depth perception, and reduced sensitivity to contrast (which can all be detected in a standard eye exam) contribute to falls.

Site work to continue on First Street project KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Residents soon will see more activity in downtown St. Charles for the third phase of the First Street Redevelopment project, according to a news release.

Construction fencing will go up on First Street in the next two weeks in advance of preliminary site work for the project’s third phase, the release stated.

The third phase includes construction of three mixeduse buildings and a two-level public parking deck in an area bounded by First Street, Illinois Street and the Fox River, according to the release.

Building No. 1 will be on the northeast corner of Illinois and First streets and be the first building constructed on the site, the release stated.

It will contain upper-level office space, street-level retail space and private underground parking.

Construction of the public parking deck also is expected to begin this fall and continue while the first building is under construction.

City staff is currently re-

viewing building permit and engineering plans for the first building, the release stated.

Once construction fencing is up, site utility work and excavation for the underground

parking level will begin, the release stated.

State and federal approvals related to utilities and floodplain regulations on the site are pending. After these approvals are secured, the construction of the building will proceed, according to the release.

No major road closures are anticipated for the project, other than temporary lane closings for utility work, the release stated.

The first building and parking deck are projected to be complete sometime in 2016, according to the release.

Construction of Building No. 2, which will front on First Street north of the first building and contain upper-level residential space with ground floor retail space, will begin by summer 2016.

Construction on the third building is likely to start in 2017, according to the release.

St. Charles prepares for Riverwalk tour Saturday KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Residents this year should expect some changes to an event formerly known as the Bob Leonard RiverWalk, according to a news release.

The event, now known as the St. Charles Riverwalk tour, will include a scavenger hunt and begin at 9:30 a.m.

Saturday at the Pottawatomie Park Grand Pavilion, 8 North Ave., St. Charles.

“This year’s Riverwalk event will focus on stories of the people and events that have shaped St. Charles,” Julie Hartig, the event’s organizer, wrote in the release.

The River Corridor Foundation worked with the St. Charles History Museum and students from St. Charles North High School to create a self-guided audio tour of little-known historical places and events along the Fox River.

Once participants have collected all of the stickers and completed their scavenger hunt maps, they will be directed back to the Pottawatamie Park pavilion, where they will be awarded coupons for free Colonial Café Ice Cream Turtle Sundaes and a free ride on the St. Charles Belle paddlewheel boat, courtesy of the Anderson Family.

Entertainment, vendors, exhibit coming to Art in Your Eye BATAVIA – Jamie Saam, director of the Art in Your Eye festival, is bringing back the student legacy exhibit to the Batavia event.

Currently, the exhibit will have 42 pieces to be shown during the festival.

Saam said some of the new food vendors this year will include Cheessie’s food truck, Raimando’s Pizza and OMango’s food truck. Saam recently was named the executive director of Batavia Mainstreet, which co-runs the event with Water Street Studios.

New bands added to this year’s music lineup at the main stage include the Hemispheres on Friday; Tom and

Jerry, Gladrages, and Dick Diamond and the Dusters on Saturday; and Music Matters Allstars Band, Small Change and the Batavia Community Band on Sunday.

Returning to the main stage will be Noah’s Arcade on Friday; John Ivan and Modern Day Romeos on Saturday; and Greg Boerner on Sunday.

While this is the first time Saam has been the director of the Art in Your Eye, she has been attending the event for the past six years.

At about 6:35 p.m. officers responded to the 1400 block of Sequoia Drive for a report of a crash involving a motorcycle

and a semitrailer, according to a news release from the Aurora police department.

Christopher Gonzalez, 22, of the 1500 block of Lincolnshire Avenue, Aurora, was driving a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle east on Sequoia Drive, about one-quarter-mile west of Randall Road, when he collided with a 2015 Freightliner semitrailer that also was

heading east and turning left into the driveway of a business, according to Aurora police.

Police said Gonzalez apparently was traveling at a high rate of speed and tried to stop before hitting the side of the semitrailer. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced

dead at the scene, according to police. The driver of the semitrailer, a 41-year-old Geneva man, was not ticketed.

An autopsy will not be performed. Police said there were no signs of alcohol or drug use at the crash site. Because a commercial vehicle was involved, the Illinois State Police are assisting in the investigation.

Of 15,350 accounts, about 18 percent – or 2,750 – opted out of the program, which begins with the August billing cycle, Resource Management Coordinator Cecilia Govrik told a Kane County Board

committee.

She noted the county does not yet have information about accounts that switched to the county’s program from another alternative provider.

Kane County officials worked for more than a year to bring electric aggregation to residents and small businesses in unincorporated portions of the county. Voters supported electric aggregation in a March 2014 ballot measure, and county officials

pursued the program with the intent to provide energy savings to residents.

In June, Kane County established a two-year contract with Dynegy Energy Services LLC. Under the agreement, the fixed rate is 6.533 cents per kilowatt-hour for the first 12 months, and it will drop to

6.065 cents per kilowatt-hour for the last 12 months of the two-year term, officials have said.

The base ComEd rate, which adjusts monthly, was expected to average 7.145 cents per kilowatt-hour from August 2015 to May 2016, plus or minus a half-cent purchased electricity adjustment

or PEA, officials have said.

Dynegy will never charge a PEA fee per the county’s contract.

“Already, they’re saving,” Govrik said of program participants.

The Illinois Second District Appellate Court struck down an ordinance passed in 2006 by the Batavia Public Library District to annex approximately 1,600 acres in Blackberry Township.

The decision gave priority to an annexation ordinance approved by the Geneva Public Library District in 2006 to annex a portion of the same territory.

In a statement, Geneva library officials said the district “is very happy with the appellate court’s ruling and looks forward to a cooperative relationship with Batavia Public Library District in the future” and “substantially resolves the longstanding legal dispute between the two library districts.”

Batavia Library Director George Scheetz said he would have to discuss the ruling with trustees.

“I would say that, on the face of it, we probably would disagree with that decision,” Scheetz said. “But I’ve got to study it further and discuss what it is really saying with our attorneys. … I guess we will have to discuss what it means and what our next step will be. It is not the clean-cut decision we thought it would be.”

The case involves the Batavia Public Library Board’s October 2006 annexation of 1,600 acres west of the Mill Creek subdivision.

The land is within Geneva’s school district and is considered part of the Geneva library’s future service area.

Currently, both the Geneva and Batavia library districts serve portions of the other city’s school district.

Over the years, the dispute took several legal turns, including eventually being heard in McHenry County Circuit Court as well as Kane County, culminating in the

appellate court’s 41-page ruling on Aug. 6.

The appellate court ruled that the trial court “erred in considering Geneva library’s intent in passing its annexation ordinance leading to an erroneous determination that the annexation was a legal gimmick to block Batavia’s annexation of same territory.”

Batavia library officials had argued that its rival Geneva library, “must demonstrate that its actions were proper and not an abuse of power and unlawful exercise of authority,” according to the decision.

“There is no statutory basis for investigating the library district’s motive in seeking to annex territory, evidence of the district’s motive or purpose is irrelevant to the trial court’s consideration of an annexation,” according to the appellate decision, which included case law.

Batavia library officials also argued that the Geneva library intended to block it from annexing into Blackberry Township.

The appellate court agreed, but it determined it was “legally irrelevant.”

The appellate court also rejected the Batavia library’s other legal objections to Geneva library’s annexation, saying, it “complied with the public policy embodied in the act.”

“While it may be engaging in border protection, we cannot say, on this record, that it is improper,” the appellate court found regarding the Geneva library’s annexation.

In dismissing Geneva’s appeal, the appellate court ruled that since the Geneva library already received the relief it sought against the Batavia library’s annexation ordinances, no further action was necessary.

Each side still can challenge annexation ordinances based on other issues, the court ruled.

County recycling events getting winter break

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s monthly recycling events soon will switch to a seasonal schedule.

Logistical difficulties associated with snow and extreme cold prompted the switch to an April-through-November schedule, recycling coordinator Jennifer Jarland told the Energy and Environmental Committee on Wednesday.

The committee approved the change by consensus.

The four-hour events are in the parking lot of the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Working the event in wintry weather can be grueling, Jarland said. Last winter, she said, organizers considered canceling two events because of the extreme cold.

“It was pretty hairy,” Jarland said, noting workers had to limit their time outside.

She said reducing the number of recycling events is not out of line because no other county holds such events monthly. The recycling event planned for December will

Recycling services are open to Kane County residents only and apply to various materials, including books, cellphones, DVD players, microwaves and vacuum cleaners. Document shredding and latex paint recycling is offered on a quarterly basis. For 2016, staff proposed adding shredding and paint services to the events in June and November.

The recycling extravaganza will continue to be in June.

Two terrific Tennessee towns A few weeks back I documented my drive down to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, discussing how my family and I got stuck in traffic, and how I was patiently anticipating five days of relaxation.

After visiting Gatlinburg and the town next to it, Pigeon Forge, I’ve come to terms with just how scenically beautiful Tennessee truly is. If you never have been to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, let me explain why you must vacation in this area at least once (although, I think you should return multiple times) in your lifetime.

Basically, Gatlinburg is just the cutest little town. My family stayed in a hotel in the outskirts of the city, so we easily were able to walk to the downtown area and back to our hotel every night; a car hardly was needed. Trust me, with the terrible traffic, walking is your best option.

Unless you enjoy getting up early to avoid the mile long line of cars, I suggest only taking a car through town if absolutely necessary.

Every street in Gatlinburg is filled with cute gift shops full of T-shirts with the words “Smokey Mountains” and “Gatlinburg” splattered on the fronts of them, black bear stuffed animals and other souvenirs to bring back home.

Also, there are delicious eateries with every type of food you can imagine. One night, my family and I ate at a Mexican restaurant that was right on the water. It almost seemed like you were on a boat, floating gently down a river.

To me, Gatlinburg is just the most relaxing town, with things to do for all ages. One night my family and I went mini golfing right next to our hotel.

We played two games, once at night and once in the afternoon. I never won, but that’s beside the point.

If Gatlinburg isn’t enough, you can always hop in your car and drive to the next town over, Pigeon Forge. To keep it brief, I loved this bizarre place. It almost reminded me of Las Vegas and Wisconsin Dells put together.

Here, an indoor amusement park building is turned upside down, the Titanic ship is docked right next door and King Kong is swinging on the side of a wax museum skyscraper.

No, I’m not joking. There’s even a gigantic Christmas store with a person in a gingerbread man suit outside the shop. Yes, I got a picture with him. Nothing has made me happier. I’ve met a gingerbread man who gave out free ice pops.

Oh, and there’s a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. My family all got doughnuts, and – if you ask me – this place alone should persuade anyone from around here to visit Pigeon Forge. Why did Krispy Kreme have to leave a majority of the Chicagoland area?

I wish I were able to write more about Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Unfortunately, I am reaching my word limit. With this trip over, I’ve realized I wish my vacation was longer. Whenever I get the opportunity to visit this area of Tennessee again, I’m jumping on it.

Congress’ endless gimmicks won’t fix our highways BLOOMBERG NEWS Congress’s most recent fight over highway spending seemed awfully familiar.

Once again, authorized cash for transportation projects was dwindling. Once again, no one could agree on a proper extension. And once again, Congress ended up passing a stopgap bill – the 34th in six years, in fact.

By now, it should go without saying this is no way to pay for public works.

And many in Congress had promised this time would be different. A long-term bill, they said, was sure to materialize. Yet paying for it proved as challenging as ever. The Senate hoped a witch’s brew of budgeting gimmicks could be stirred up and transformed into cash. The House hoped more aggressive tax collection might do the trick.

What both approaches had in common was they had nothing to do with highways. They thus ne-

gated the primary virtue of the Highway Trust Fund, which is it’s paid for by the very people who use the roads, via an excise tax on gas. And, for good measure, both approaches aimed to effectively cover operating expenses with a one-time cash infusion. It doesn’t take an economist to spot the flaw in that.

Sadly, the substance of the Senate’s long-term bill – the nuts and bolts of surface-transportation policy – was solid. It was bipartisan and requested only modestly higher spending. It would have improved freight shipment and alleviated congestion. And it sensibly boosted funding to fix battered bridges and interstates.

Now, as Congress heads off for vacation, optimists hope the two houses still might hash out a compromise once they reconvene, or a separate plan – perhaps one corralling the proceeds of a one-time tax on corporate profits held abroad

– can top up the trust fund when the stopgap expires.

There’s a better way.

That is to modestly increase the federal gas tax – which has been stuck at 18.4 cents a gallon since 1993 – and index it to inflation. Then Congress should look for new ways to pay for highways, bearing in mind Americans are driving less and cars are becoming more fuel-efficient. The goal should be to ensure highway infrastructure still is largely paid for by drivers.

A federal tax on vehicle-miles traveled – an idea several states are considering – may be one path forward, once the technology is reliable and privacy safeguards are in place. Another might be to gradually wind down the trust fund and start taxing oil at refineries instead. Imposing more user fees on roads and bridges and expanding the use of public-private partnerships for construction projects also would help.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

GENEVA – Starting this week, the city will be sealing cracks on about 20 streets as part of the 2015 road improvement program, according to a Geneva news release issued Tuesday.

Cracks are sealed to prevent water infiltration into the pavement base, thus extending the road’s life expectancy. All of the streets are within neighborhoods and will not require any lane closures, the release stated.

Crews are expected to start on the city’s west side, according to the release. It indicated residents will be notified a day before work starts on their street.

A map of the affected streets is posted at www.geneva.il.us under the “Construction projects” link. The city anticipates sealing as many streets as possible, but there is a chance some roads might have to be completed in 2016, according to the release.

Geneva Construction, the

city’s contractor, will cut a reservoir into the streets, use air pressure to clear the cracks of loose debris and fill the areas with hot asphalt that hardens quickly. The first two steps can produce loud noises and dust, so residents are advised to keep their windows closed, the release stated.

The day after a street has been sealed, a street sweeper will brush the debris to the curb line, where it can be vacuumed, according to the release.

Also in Geneva, three downtown public parking lots will be closed for resurfacing next week: the Garden Club lot east of River Lane at Hamilton Street; the Fulton Street lot north of Fulton Street between Third and Fourth streets; and the High Hat lot north of Fulton Street near Second Street.

According to the release, sealcoating is set for Monday, and the lots will reopen Tuesday after the parking space striping is finished.

‘Epcot for Horses’

St. Charles fest a horse-themed cultural extravaganza

A horse, of course!

Actually – among them – an array of horses. Lusitanos, Nokotas, Aztecas, Friesians, Andalusians, Rocky Mountain horses, thoroughbreds, mustangs, ponies and more, and all can be seen at the Festival of the Horse & Drum.

The Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, will host the third annual Festival of the Horse & Drum on Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 16.

The festival is a multicultural, multimedia equestrian festival that uses horses as a common theme to celebrate various cultures, traditions and historical eras.

“It started on my front porch,” said Lisa Diersen, founder and director of the Festival of the Horse & Drum.

On a late summer afternoon in 2012, Diersen was chatting with the St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau trying to brainstorm different promotional ideas for the town. Diersen, a horse breeder, trainer and co-owner of the Royal Lusitano, 42W580 Empire Road., St. Charles, suggested a horse-themed festival.

“That’s what we’re trying to do is build community, because there’s so many horses and so many horse people in this area,” Diersen said. “People live here, and they just don’t realize how rich the equestrian community is in education and sharing the knowledge and sharing what the horses are and what the horses can bring into people’s lives.”

Illinois is ranked third in state horse population for the Midwest region, according to americanequestrian.com. With an expanding equestrian population in the north and northwest suburbs, Diersen said she hopes to continue the growth.

“I wanna see things like this grow here,” she said. “This really has the ability to put St. Charles on the map.”

While the main reason for the festival

was to help promote the St. Charles area, Diersen also wanted the festival to educate visitors about the importance of horses.

“It’s very education-based, and it’s multicultural so everyone can get together and realize the common thread is the horse,” said Diersen. “There’s nowhere around that kids can see ... how horses have traveled with us throughout history.”

The idea of a horse-themed festival quickly began to progress from a trot to a gallop.

“It became clear right away that having it be a celebration of all of these things in one place, people would kinda be going to Epcot for horses,” Diersen said. “It’s a lot of little villages. The cultures are so beautiful and, to see the heritage, you just don’t see that anymore.”

Highlighting horses beyond the racetrack, the festival will divide the fairgrounds by specific themes, such as Cowboy Town, Native American experience, Horse of Kings and more. Each of the festival’s subsections will have a variety of events, demos and competitions for attendees.

The festival also will include Horse-apalooza, a festival of music and dance, featuring a people’s choice music contest with $500 and $250 prizes.

“Every year it gets better and better,” said Janice Fischer, photographer and festival exhibitor.

Fischer’s exhibit, “Carousel Horses in Motion,” is comprised of photographs of real horses adorned in decorative costumes that mimic those “worn” by traditional carousel horses. A second-year participant, Fischer said the festival contains a variety of events for everyone.

“People go to learn and be around horses. There’s really good energy – [it’s] calming and [has] something for everybody,” Fischer said.

Lara Burau of the War Horse History Fest, a subdivision of the festival that showcases war reenactments, said the up-andcoming event is “quite different.”

rau said. “There is more to horses than just riding and so much to be gained.”

The festival has shared a relationship with the Equus Film Festival, which also was founded by Diersen. Opening in 2013 in conjunction with the Festival of the Horse & Drum, movie screenings were originally held at the Arcada Theatre in downtown St. Charles. After receiving submissions from across the nation, including one from England, the film festival quickly expanded and is currently held in New York City.

While the film festival no longer coincides with the Festival of the Horse & Drum, submissions for the 2015 Equus Film Festival in New York City are open until Sept. 20. Entries can be submitted to lisa@ equusconceptsllc.com.

With an array of varying events, the unique festival can stirrup a crowd. Last year, guests from more than eight different states were reported to have attended, said Diersen.

Out-of-town guests can stay at any of the hotels located in St. Charles and the surrounding area. The Quality Inn, 1600 E.

Main St., St. Charles, is offering a special rate of $79 per night for the many commuters. According to Diersen, availability is filling up fast.

“I want all of our visitors – young and old – to leave our festival feeling entertained and enlightened about our wonderful world of horses,” said Ron Vasser, Chicago Emmy-award television producer, director and executive producer of the festival’s Team USA vs. Team Mexico Horse & Rider competition.

The competition is a multicultural gathering of the best Midwest riders to showcase their skills for a cash prize.

“We are one big celebration of diversity with great entertainment, beautiful horses, music, food, vendors, and [it’s] the best place to be for people watching,” Vasser said.

All horsing around aside, the Festival of the Horse & Drum honors the horse and its vital connection to humans.

“As a society we would not be where we are at without horses,” Diersen said. “They moved us across countries; they fought our battles for us; they brought milk to our front doors; they’re a part of our history for thousands and thousands of years.”

New restaurant a gateway to Vietnamese cuisine NORTH AURORA – Few things excite a lover of ethnic cuisine more than a steaming-hot bowl of pho.

The Vietnamese dish – pronounced “fuh” – is the street-stall favorite that Americans most often associate with the country.

Like oatmeal, cereal or bacon and eggs, pho is ordinarily served at breakfast, and – apparently – it’s a first-rate dish for anyone nursing a hangover, so says the irreverent chef and travel-show bad boy Anthony Bourdain, who lists pho as one of his all-time, favorite dishes – and not just after an evening of inebriated debauchery.

Now, with the recent opening of Vietnam Gate in North Aurora, a bowl of soothing deliciousness is only a short drive away.

Located in a converted house along Route 31, the restaurant’s interior bears a resemblance to a cafeteria or fast-food establishment with limited seating and menu items, but the service is stellar. No pretension, stuffiness or trendy ornamentation, just a simple space where good people serve good food – and quickly.

The restaurant serves a handful of Vietnamese dishes, in addition to Chinese fare.

On a quest for the aforementioned pho, upon entering Vietnam Gate, I inquired as to which pho I should try: beef or chicken.

With a wide smile, the man taking my order recommended the beef, which he preferred. In addition to the beef pho ($10.50), we ordered a BBQ Sandwich ($5.50) – also known as a Vietnamese Sandwich – and Sesame Chicken with fried rice.

Each item came out as soon as it was made – one at a time – beginning with the BBQ Sandwich, which received two thumbs up from my dining companion, who wouldn’t cease consumption of said sandwich to offer any verbal confirmation of his adoration for the food.

I shared his sentiments, but I, on the other hand, wouldn’t shut up about it.

In between bites it was all: “This is so good” and “I can’t believe how good this sandwich is.”

With pho, it’s all about the broth. It often comes with a plate of bean sprouts, herbs – in this case, basil – and vegetables you can add to the dish. But, before doing anything else, sample the broth. Squirt some sriracha sauce for spiciness and hoisin sauce for a bit of sweetness, and mix everything around with your chopsticks. If adding basil, don’t submerge the entire leaf; it’s best to rip leaves into pieces and sprinkle them into the dish.

The Sesame Chicken and fried rice tasted good, too, but paled in comparison to the Vietnamese offerings, which my dining companion and I thoroughly enjoyed.

According to a previous story done by the Kane County Chronicle, property owner Thanh Ngo spent several years converting the house on his property into a restaurant, and I am happy to say that it was well worth the wait.

Steel to face elite competition in Russia

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Chicago Steel coach Dan Muse invoked a “whirlwind” in describing his transition from a longtime role on the Yale men’s staff to his first job in the United States Hockey League.

That was before club owner Larry Robbins called Muse to report that the Steel, who recently relocated to Geneva, would be representing the league and USA Hockey at the Junior Club World Cup in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Now Muse and that figurative storm are happily headed east.

The Steel will begin play Aug. 24, competing in their first of three pool play games

before the medal round opens on Aug. 28.

“In all honesty, I couldn’t be more excited,” Muse said.

“I think this is going to be an absolute wonderful opportunity on a number of different levels.”

Should the Steel approach the accomplishments of past USHL brethren to participate in the event, the venture certainly will be successful.

Iowa franchises Waterloo (2012), Dubuque (2013) and Sioux City (2014) earned silver, bronze and bronze medals in their respective appearances. The U.S is the only country to medal three times in the tournament’s first four years.

“We expect that this will be a world-class tourna-

ment,” said Muse, 33. “Based on speaking with other teams that have traveled there in the past, based on knowing some of the teams that are going to be going into the tournament, their reputation, we expect this to be a tournament with an extremely high level of skill. We expect to be competing against players that are going to be future stars in the professional ranks in just a few years.”

The Steel, of course, boast their own crop of budding talent, with 11 players returning from 2014-15, which proved to be the franchise’s final season at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville. One of them, forward Ryan Blankemeier, is a Dartmouth commit who won the USHL Scholar Ath-

lete Award last season.

Among the newcomers is 17-year-old Czech goalkeeper Daniel Vladar, a third-round draft pick of the Boston Bruins in June.

After a training camp in New Jersey, the Steel will travel to Moscow for a crash course in sightseeing and team bonding, planning trips to such landmarks as Red Square and Gorky Park.

“We’ve been hard at work with the logistics of bringing 39 players and staff to Russia, where they will … compete against the best junior club teams in the world … (while) immersing themselves in the rich tradition and history of Russian hockey and Russian culture,” interim steel president John Egan said.

Although the Steel have adopted “All For One” as their season slogan ahead of the team’s Sept. 26 opener, the Russian expedition lends further credence to another potental theme: “On the Move.”

“The whole summer has been really exciting,” Blankemeier said. “The new ownership has just gone after it.

They haven’t waited around at all. With the Russia trip and then with this, it’s good to feel like we’re going all in, and to know that we’ll have first-class facilities, a better fan base, a lot of community involvement. Which we had in Bensenville, but I think the opportunities will be a lot bigger in Fox Valley, so I’m really, really excited for that.”

players that they do in club, so he coaches a younger age group.

But even in Walter’s years in coaching soccer, he said it’s not often you see three high school teammates who are best friends play high school, club and have the chance to all make and play on an ODP team.

“You don’t really get that in these kinds of environments,” Walter said. “You don’t get where you get a group of girls to stay together for such a long period of time. A lot of kids move from club to club trying to find better teams, so when kids stick together they grow, develop and learn at a better

Baressi has been with Kickers United FC since fourth grade, while Czerniak joined in sixth grade with Kaufman coming aboard shortly after.

But all three have become best friends, mainly from the amount of soccer they have played together over the years. As Walter said, it is very common for girls to go to different club teams, so the girls have relished their opportunity and have made each other better soccer players.

“Being best friends makes us play soccer that much better together,” Kaufman said. “We hang outside of soccer and really just have developed the chemistry to know each other’s strengths.

Madison Playing on the Kaufman ODP team really gave us good exposure since we all want to play in college, so it was awesome to do this all together.”

“We find ways to make each other look good on the field which helps our entire team,” Baressi said. “Playing together for so long, you get to know each other very, very well.”

While the training for the high school girls soccer season won’t begin for a few months, there is certainly excitement about the benefits of playing together year-round as the spring approaches.

ELGIN – Sports certainly build a lot of things. But playing the same sport with the same teammates often builds strong friendships outside of athletics.

It has done just that for three St. Charles North girls soccer players. Amanda Czerniak, Madison Kaufman and Claire Baressi, all juniors, don’t just play at North together, but also for the Elgin-based club program, Kickers United FC. Recently all three made the 1999 Illinois Olympic Development Program state team. The teams are sorted by age groups.

Amanda Czerniak, Czerniak who has good size and speed, can play all over the field but mostly plays midfield. She either scored or assisted on half of the ODP team’s goals during the camps and showcases the team participated in.

Of the 37 girls selected to the Illinois ODP state team, Czerniak was one of eight players who made the regional pool, which makes her eligible to be called up for the Midwest Regional team to play in competition and receive even more college exposure.

“I felt so honored to be in that pool,” Czerniak said.

“But then again, I’ve never been so nervous for one camp.

I literally knew no one because we didn’t talk to or play with the girls from the other ODP team, but it was a great experience for me.”

The girls in the regional pool that get called up all have the opportunity to make a national pool, with the Under-20 United States Women’s national team at the peak of the goals.

MAPLE PARK – The big turnout for the Kaneland girls tennis team was good news for coach Tim Larsen, whose Knights will bring back only Brittany Zablocki to singles.

Emily Mirocha and Katelyn Blaszynski saw some time on varsity at doubles, but Larsen said he wasn’t sure whether they’d be partnered together again or not.

In fact, Larsen said he wasn’t sure of much of anything of what the team will look like when the season starts.

Wednesday marked the first day of fall practice.

“We graduated three all-state players and seven

staples in the varsity lineup,” Larsen said. “I talked to the girls today and said everything was wide open. A lot of the girls swung the racket well today, so we just have to find the right spots to put everyone in.”

EA Sports announced Wednesday that Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane will not serve as a spokesperson for the launch of NHL 16 and will not appear on the cover.

BOURBONNAIS – A seventh-round pick should prepare for life on the bubble in the NFL, but when Marc Mariani made the Pro Bowl as a rookie, he was pretty confident he’d have the Titans’ return job again in 2011.

That was the last summer Mariani could relax a bit in the preseason.

He had a gruesome leg break in August 2012 and made quite the comeback, but the return from injury only got as far as the preseason with the Titans in 2013 and 2014 before the Bears gave him his first regular-season action in three years late last season. Now, Mariani is expected to get the first crack at the Bears’ return job and is relying on a better training method in the offseason to help him

I feel like what’s benefited me is I’ve learned how to work and how to train,” Mariani said after Tuesday’s practice. “I’ve stepped up my training during the offseason. I’ve learned how to take care of my body a little better. “… I do feel great this time around. I don’t think anything healthwise will hold me back.”

Mariani had seven punt returns for 29 yards last season and 20 kickoff returns for 510 yards (a 25.5-yard average), including a 67-yarder. Returning kicks in the preseason can be tricky, as the coaches try to divvy up reps among players trying to break it every time.

“It’s a tough deal because you never get actual live reps on special teams in practice, so everything is contingent on how you do in the games,” Mariani said. “I feel like in the return game especially, it’s extra magnified. You can go live reps practice in offense, defense, but on special teams, it’s tough to get those real live reps.

“You can’t press it. Sometimes you feel like you might only get one or two [returns], so you’d want to bring it back from 9 [yards] deep [in the end zone], but that gets you into trouble.

You’ve got to let the game come to you and make plays when your number is called.”

McIlroy-Spieth reigns as top rivalry

By SALLY JENKINS The Washington Post Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth carry it all so lightly, don’t they? At least for now, time is an unlimited commodity and consequences have no weight for the twentysomethings, who rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the world on the eve of the PGA Championship and will be paired together in today’s opening round. McIlroy is springing around like a spaniel despite rupturing a ligament just six weeks ago, and Spieth is already recovered enough from his heartbreak at the British Open to trash talk Phil Mickelson. They are fast healers, with easy swings and go-lucky heads.

McIlroy, 26, is so irrepressibly buoyant and elastic-limbed that he apparently is feeling little pain in the ankle he tore up horsing around in a “kick about” with friends on a soccer pitch July 4. He was hitting balls by July 28, and running on a treadmill shortly after that. He bounded up the steep hills of Whistling Straits during his practice rounds, and pronounced himself “100 percent” ready to defend his PGA title and his No. 1 ranking against the onrush of Spieth.

McIlroy’s rapid return raised some eyebrows among creakier veterans, notably Tiger Woods, who wondered if McIlroy came back too soon and how the ankle would respond to the physical demands of Whistling Straits, with steep side-hills that require crooked, angled stances and a lot of swiveling and heavy-loading of the legs and feet.

“This is going to be a tough golf course, if you miss the ball a little bit,” Woods said.

“Even the walks, from tee box to fairway, they’re not straight. They’ve got a little angulation. And it’s just a matter of how can he hold up. . .Is he probably going to be in pain? Probably, yeah.

Swelling is going to probably occur.”

McIlroy’s attitude? It’s just golf, not mountaineering.

To some, McIlroy was foolish to mess around on a

soccer field in the first place, and even more foolish to risk his ankle by coming back too soon. But both decisions are the counterintuitive acts of a prodigy who is determined to balance work and play, maximize his talent yet cling to his boyhood and avoid becoming too over-serious or grinding about his game. It’s a trait he shares with the 22-year-old Spieth, and it’s a good starting point in trying to explain how the pair have been able to rise above the rest of the field under pressure, as well as the press of history, to win a combined four of the last five major championships.

“I think it is an interesting fine line,” Spieth said last week. “How do you enjoy it, and how do you rebound?”

They manage to pursue frank historical ambitions without over-striving. Although different types – McIlroy is more sweet-swinging and easily distractible, Spieth the more mechanistic and focused – they have similar outlooks. They sound remarkably alike on the subject. Just listen: Last year after winning the British Open and PGA in the space of a month to become only the fourth player in a century to collect four majors before the age of 26, McIlroy said, “Golf is looking for someone to put their hand up and try. I want to be that person.”

Then here came Spieth, at the age of 21 sweeping the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open, and making a run at becoming the only player other than Ben Hogan and Woods to win three majors in the same year.

“I’d like to be one of those people,” Spieth said.

So here they are, bearing down on each other. McIlroy is the elder with twice as many major titles, but Spieth already has won enough to suggest his competitive thirst will be a constant challenge: At the British Open he was tied for the lead with two holes to play on Sunday before he fell out of a three-way playoff. He then helped his friend Zach Johnson celebrate by chugging out of the claret jug.

Spieth ramped himself back up for the PGA this week

by playing in a high stakes practice-round match with Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas on Tuesday at Whistling Straits. He amused his partners by threatening to bring along his U.S. Open trophy to dangle in front of Mickelson; it’s the one big title Mickelson lacks.

“I’m going to try to get the U.S. Open trophy flown in so I can sit it on the front of each green for Phil,” Spieth said. “...We’ll see if we can get somebody to carry it around for the round. It’s the first time I have something on him.”

Compare that fresh attitude to, say, the choppy semi-hysterics of a Bubba Watson, or the grinding hyper-analytical neurosis of Woods. If Spieth and McIlroy have a quality that sets them apart, it’s their resilient mental health. It’s a main component that allows them to be repeat-major champions, as important as their brilliantly constructed swing mechanics. Here is Zach Johnson on Spieth: “It’s like an innate ability to just get it done,” Johnson said. “... Seems to me he kind of likes when his back is against the wall. And he doesn’t succumb to probably the pressure of being a favorite, either. I think there’s a little bit of tension and pressure and I would say even restriction, to some degree, that guys have when you’re supposed to rise to the top. And for whatever reason he has – that doesn’t bother him a bit.”

It will be all the more interesting, then, to see them playing with each other in the spotlight of a major championship. For Spieth, still more history is at stake. For McIlroy, the No. 1 ranking is potentially in play: Spieth could seize it from him by finishing third or better. Until now, the notion of a rivalry between the two was just that, an idea. They were too young, and hadn’t intersected enough when it counted.

Then came McIlroy’s injury.

But with McIlroy in the field again, he will have “a chance to at least fight for it himself,” Spieth said. He added, “Which is what we all want.”

Yes it is.

Dear Abby: I’m writing in re-

sponse to “Not Talking About the Future” (March 24), whose wife has breast cancer, was told she has only a few years to live and feels sad when her kids talk about their futures. My dad was diagnosed with stage four multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in 2006. He was told that even the most aggressive treatment would buy him only two or three more years. Well, he’s now working on year nine.

While I must admit that it’s been hard at times for me to stay positive about his prognosis, I try not to let it show. Instead, every chance I get, I talk about the future with him – holiday plans, projects around his house, etc. It helps to take his mind off the pain and nastiness of his treatments.

Forward thinking has been great medicine for Dad. “Not Talking” and his wife don’t really know how much more time she

Aim of stroke rehabilitation is to regain damaged abilities Dear Doctor K: My husband recently had a stroke. The doctors say he will need “rehab” after he is released, at a different type of hospital. Can you tell me what rehab is?

Dear Reader: Your question requires a long answer. So I’m going to devote both today’s and tomorrow’s columns to that answer.

A stroke stops the blood supply to a part of the brain and causes the death of brain cells in the area that no longer receives blood. The symptoms caused by a stroke are quite varied. Not only can strokes cause different types of symptoms, but the symptoms can also range from mild to severe. A patient’s symptoms depend on what part(s) of the brain a stroke has damaged, and how bad the damage is.

Unless a stroke causes very mild symptoms, a patient is hospitalized for some time in an acute-care hospital. After a patient’s condition is stabilized, a period of rehabilitation (“rehab”) begins.

About two-thirds of people who have a stroke need some form of rehab therapy. Rehab is designed to help the patient regain some or all of the abilities that were damaged by the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff stroke. It can address a wide range of issues. I don’t know what symptoms your husband’s stroke caused, so I don’t know what type of rehab he needs. For example, rehab could help your husband regain strength, learn how to walk again, improve his speech, restore his memory or help him adapt to a permanent disability.

Before he leaves the hospital, your husband’s medical team will assess his basic abilities: Can he swallow safely? Can he bathe and dress himself? Can he get around on his own? Based on the assessment, the hospital will recommend the level of post-hospital care that will be best for him.

If your husband doesn’t have significant medical needs, he may be able to return home directly from the hospital. If he has access to transportation, he may be able to receive treatment at an outpatient rehab center.

The services at outpatient centers usually include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, which I will describe tomorrow. Patients who can’t get

to and from an outpatient facility may receive rehab services at home.

If your husband’s doctor thinks he needs to spend time in a rehab facility, the two of you will meet the first member of the rehab team: the case manager/ discharge planner. This person coordinates the services you receive in the inpatient setting and works with the hospital and your health insurer to arrange for the appropriate continuing care after your discharge, whether it be to home-care services or a transfer to another inpatient level of care.

If the case manager and insurer think your husband needs to be transferred to a rehab institution, they will tell you the different facilities they recommend, and work with you to arrange to have your husband transferred to the chosen facility.

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll describe the different rehab institutions to which your husband may be transferred, and the members of the rehab team that he may meet.

Romance leads to running away Dr. Wallace: This summer I was very depressed until I met a great guy who helped me overcome this depression. He really changed my life for the better. He is 17 and I am 16. We had been dating for more than two months when we decided that we were both deeply in love with each other.

We managed to be together often even though he lived in a nearby town. One evening I was really upset about something and I called him just to talk to him.

He told me he wanted to come over to comfort me and even though it was late, he drove over to my house. We talked for some time and then we decided that we could not bear being separated for even an hour so we both decided to run away.

We were gone a week before we were caught and returned to our parents. The next day after we got home, I called to talk to him, but his mother answered and refused to allow me to speak to him. Several days later I got a package in the mail with every letter I had ever written to him stuffed inside. He wrote a note inside and told me not to write or call him anymore and to just forget about him. He also said that he would get into serious trouble at home if I didn’t do as he told me.

Dr. Wallace, I know this guy loves me with all of his heart and soul and that his mother forced him to write that letter. He hasn’t tried to contact me yet, but I know that eventually he will. Sometimes understanding the engineer of a bidding convention takes some clear thinking. We are looking at New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor – one of a major – one no-trump, two of the unbid minor by the responder is artificial, promises at least game-invitational values, and asks opener for more information.

In this deal, when South bids two hearts, he indicates a fourcard suit and denies three spades.

Then, when responder continues with three clubs, it is natural and game-forcing. (With a weak hand and club support, North would have jumped to three clubs over one no-trump – see yesterday’s column.)

North should realize that if South has only two spades, he must have four or five clubs.

South’s three-spade bid shows a doubleton high honor. Then North uses Blackwood before signing off in seven clubs.

Note that in spades or no-trump, there are only 12 winners: five spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs. But in clubs, a fifth club trick is available.

South takes the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace and draws two rounds of trumps, uncovering the 4-1 break. Then he plays three rounds of hearts, ruffing the last in the dummy, draws trumps, and claims 13 tricks, the same 12 as in spades or no-trump plus the heart ruff.
