Kaneland student acquires skills at conference SUGAR GROVE – When he learned of an opportunity to help students build their leadership skills, Kaneland Harter Middle School teacher Kyle Ahlmann said he recommended a few kids who might benefit.

Ahlmann said he was happy to hear at least one student – Sugar Grove resident Julian Rodriguez – traveled to the weeklong Junior National Young Leaders Conference in the Washington, D.C., area.

“I thought he demonstrated qualities [of being a good leader],” said Ahlmann, who added the soon-to-be seventh-grader was “the kind of kid other kids want to be around.”

With support from his parents, Vince Rodriguez and Sara Schroeder, Julian Rodriguez went to the conference and called it a positive experience. The student was able to take in the sights around Washington, D.C., and also

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla was impressed to be included in a large group from across the country. If he had ideas he might be a leader before, those thoughts were strengthened at the conference.

He said there was much to learn, adding he came away with the idea “being a leader isn’t taking control.” Instead, he said, it’s more about providing information other people need and “doing the right thing.”

After learning about the opportunity, Vince Rodriguez said he was “very much sold on it from the first moment.”

Ahlmann said some might not take the trip because there is a cost associated with it, as well as a time commitment. And some families might be uncomfortable

“This is something we had to do,” he said.

Schroeder said it was worth the effort. She said her son can be quiet and more reserved at home. She said he seems a little more excited

about the beginning of the school year, and he has been mentioning the conference a lot.

“I’m glad he went,” she said. “It’s something he will talk about for a long time. It is just a good thing to have done.”

Vince Rodriguez said his son has shown leadership qualities in sports, such as basketball and football. Ahlmann said he noticed Julian Rodriguez’s helpful attitude in class. He said the student isn’t afraid to ask questions, sometimes even just to provide help to others who might be afraid to ask.

“He’s in it because he generally wants to help,” Ahlmann said, adding, “I see in him a maturity that exceeds his grade level.”

Free archery clinic comes to Sugar Grove Aug. 29

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kevin Helwig, president of the Northern Illinois Archery Organization, said it didn’t take long for him to fall in love with the sport: just one shot.

Helwig, who has taught archery for the past nine years, said he gets similar reactions from his students. The most common surprise they’ve voiced is “how much fun it really was,” he said.

His organization hopes to

further promote the sport of archery during a free clinic set for Aug. 29 at Belle Vue Park at 270 Belle Vue Drive in Sugar Grove. Equipment will be provided.

Spectators are welcome, Helwig said.

Although the one-hour time slots were full as of Tuesday, Helwig said people may contact the group in case hours are added or another day is planned. Email classes@niarchery.org with “Free Archery Clinic” in the subject line. It is open to those ages 8

Walk of a Life Time to benefit Marklund

Elderday Center in Batavia celebrates 25 years

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For 25 years, the nonprofit Elderday Center has provided services designed to help keep seniors in their homes longer.

Debbie Bozedowski, of Elburn, knows how important Elderday’s services are.

Her father, Dominick Barca, 86, has Alzheimer’s disease and has been attending Elderday for the past five years.

“It’s kept him at home,” Bozedowski said. “Without Elderday, I would have had to put him in a home. It keeps his mind working.”

She also likes the family atmosphere at the center.

“They are part of my family,” Bozedowski said.

The nonprofit Elderday Center, which is based in the Bethany Ministry building of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia, specializes in day memory care. In

Community signage planned for major Batavia intersection Gas station also planned for corner of Wilson Street, Kirk Road

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen want to gather ideas from design firms on what kind of signage they would create for the northeast corner of Wilson Street and Kirk Road on the city’s east side.

Work recently began on a Speedway gas station that will be built on that corner. But aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting also spoke about the need to install community signs at the corner. Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said he would like to see a sign pointing to the city’s historic downtown.

Dave Brown said he would like to see some professional input about what type of signage would be appropriate for the corner.

“That’s a major corner,” Brown said. “We don’t want to just put up a rinky-dink sign.”

Batavia aldermen previously had given the green light to the construction of a Speedway gas station at the corner. Speedway plans to build a 4,608-square-foot retail store that will be open 24 hours a day as part of the project.

Rich Yost, division project manager for Speedway, previously had told aldermen the station is expected to gener-

ate $250,000 a year in sales tax revenues for the city.

There are no gas stations along that stretch of Kirk Road in Batavia.

Kane County has jurisdiction over Kirk Road.

The Kane County Division of Transportation has indicated several intersection improvements are planned as part of the project, including widened pavements, rightturn lanes approaching Wilson Street and the Kirk Road ingress, lengthening of the southbound Kirk Road leftturn lane at Wilson, installation of a new traffic signal and accessible crosswalks with pedestrian/bike push buttons and countdown timers.

NEW ERA AT KANELAND

Leden starts as district’s new superintendent

MAPLE PARK – Geneva High School’s principal can remember Todd Leden quickly moving into a leadership role during Leden’s time at the school.

Leden taught at Geneva School District 304 and worked in the district from 1997 to 2004. Tom Rogers, now the Geneva High School principal, said he was the athletic director when Leden arrived as a physical education teacher and girls basketball coach.

When Rogers became an assistant principal, Leden served as the interim athletic director before leaving in 2004 for Fenton High School.

Leden is preparing to begin his first school year as the superintendent of Kaneland School District 302. He will be the district’s first full-time superintendent since Jeff Schuler left a few weeks into the 2014-15 school year to become superintendent at the Wheaton-Warrenville school district. Renee Goier served as the interim superintendent for most of the last school year. Last month, Leden began his term as Kaneland’s superintendent.

Rogers said it is no surprise to see Leden leading a school district.

“When he left Geneva High School, he went to Fenton to become the athletic director,” Rogers said, adding “in a very short period of time,” Leden became Fenton’s principal. Rogers said he talked to Leden frequently while Leden pursued his doctorate, and he added Leden “was very motivated” to accomplish that.

Rogers described him as “very even-keeled.”

Kaneland School District 302 Superintendent Todd Leden has been on the job since early July.

Leden was named as Kaneland’s superintendent in December. It was announced as part of a three-year contract with a base salary of $175,000.

He was the principal and associate superintendent in the Fenton district, which is a high school district. He stayed with the Fenton district through the end of the school year to guide an ongoing construction project.

At Kaneland, Leden is working to begin a process of getting to know community members, staff members and students, which he said has been “going well.” Another key duty will be playing a role in the establishment of the district’s strategic plan.

said he will be visible at events, adding he hoped those in the community will stop by to visit when he mans the district’s booth at Elburn Days, which gets underway next week. He said the theme for the year in the school district will be “proud to be a Knight.”

He also has been looking into the issues at Kaneland, including a concern that emerged last year – teacher retention. He said he has examined data presented to the school board that showed the retention rate isn’t that different than it is at surrounding districts.

“We work hard; we hire good people,” he said. “We train them, and we mentor them. And people are discouraged when they leave.”

He said a key will be getting to know staff members and district leaders and iden-

tifying those who are interested in future advancement, and helping those individuals achieve that at Kaneland.

Julie-Ann Fuchs, Kaneland’s associate superintendent, said Leden “is off to a great start.” Fuchs was among those on the district leadership team who worked to help the district through its transition. She said there were six members of the team – herself and Leden; as well as Sarah Mumm and Mike Purcell, the district’s directors of educational services for kindergarten through fifth grade and sixth through 12th grade, respectively; Fran Eggleston, the director of special services; and Tim Wolf, the director of technology.

“It certainly was a challenging time,” Fuchs said. “However, the district leadership team worked closely together

to make sure that all required tasks were completed and that students were not impacted.”

Teresa Witt, the school board president, wrote in an email the leadership team “performed in exemplary fashion during the interim period.” She added the board “is eager to work with Dr. Leden and is confident that he will move the district forward while building on our strong Kaneland foundation.”

Witt noted Leden will play a key role in the strategic planning process, which “will establish district goals that will determine future work,” as well as negotiations with the Kaneland Education Association and a newly formed paraprofessional group.

“We look forward to having Dr. Leden’s leadership and input during those processes,” Witt wrote.

In other news, the County Board recognized outgoing KaneComm Director Brad Sauer for his service. He was selected as the temporary head of Kane County’s emergency services dispatch office in January 2013.

Sauer, who also had stints as the Sugar Grove police chief and county coroner, said it was an “honor and privilege to serve the people of Kane County.”

Lauzen welcomed Dave Farris – director of KenCom Public Safety Dispatch in Kendall County – to the role. Although Sauer leaves big shoes to fill, “you are just the right person,” Lauzen told Farris. “Dave, I’m really glad that you’re here.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen this week recommended approval of a transfer of $27,500 to the Geneva Foundation for the Arts as an endowment for a future arts center.

The Geneva Cultural Arts Commission, an advisory board of the city, requested the funds transfer. Its primary goal is to bring an arts venture to the community, officials said. Tim Vetang, who is president of the commission, said he is a board member of the foundation, which was started last year.

“It was created by me and three other individuals as a private foundation to support a cultural arts center and raise money to build an endowment,” Vetang said Monday at a Committee of the Whole meeting. “When an arts center is created, it will have a source of steady income. Our missions are parallel.”

Vetang said an arts center

could be five to 10 years or longer down the road – so officials want to start planning.

The money transferred would be restricted for the planning, construction or operation of an arts center, Vetang said.

The arts commission has $77,925 in its budget for the current fiscal year, officials said.

“None of this money came from any taxes,” Vetang said.

“The money came either from individual donations, business support for the arts or our events held each year, such as Shakespeare in the Park or the RiverPark concert series.”

Larger fundraisers, such as Dancing with the Geneva Stars in the past and the current Eat Your Art Out, raised $10,000 to $16,000 each year to support its programs, Vetang said.

If the money does not get used for an arts center, it would go back to the city of Geneva for approval to be used for something else, Vetang said.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Radecki said the request reminded him of a time in 1998, when then-mayor Tom Coughlin asked him to serve on a committee to explore a location for a cultural arts building.

“The Sixth Street School was the focus at the time,” Radecki said.

Fifth Ward Alderman Craig Maladra said he admired the group for offering a vision.

“And not saying, ‘Give me a $1 million, and I’ll decide what to do, [or] give me a building, and I’ll figure out what do with it,’” Maladra said.

Vetang said the group wants to be prepared if an opportunity presents itself. He said it is not ethical to accept a building if the group does not have the resources to operate it.

“It doesn’t do the cause justice if it sits empty for years,” Vetang said.

The Geneva City Council will take final action on the committee’s recommendation.

GENEVA – The family seeking to open a restaurant at the former Al Capone’s Hideaway and Steakhouse property must wait another month for the Kane County Board to act on its zoning request.

The board Tuesday tabled the item to Sept. 8.

The Zoning Board of Appeals and the County Development Committee already have backed the Casiello family’s petition, albeit with stipulations regarding amplified sound, outdoor lighting and operating hours.

The Casiellos are planning a family-friendly bar and grill restaurant at the former steakhouse, 35W337 Riverside Drive, St. Charles Township. Rezoning is necessary because the property reverted to its original farming zoning after the Hideaway closed. Their proposal has drawn opposition from neighbors concerned about increased traffic and noise.

Although the Casiellos have agreed to close at 11:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, several residents Tuesday asked for a 10:30 p.m. closing. Michelle Haugen said motorists often “gun it” to get up a steep hill as they are leaving the Hideaway property.

“It’s personal for us,” she said. “I know it’s not personal for you.”

Gary Geurts described the situation as “spot zoning” and urged County Board members to act on the matter as if it were planned for their backyard.

“I’m counting on you guys to protect us,” he said.

Their concerns did not prompt the tabling of the item, said, County Board member and County Development Committee Chair Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts. He said Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, who handles liquor license applications, had questions about gaming terminals and asked for the extension. Of the residents’ concerns, Kojzarek said an earlier closing time could mean the restaurant would have to close before the end of sporting events on the West Coast.

The Casiellos are “making compromises where they can,” he said.

ELBURN – Ben Westfall hopes to see many people pedaling around Elburn this weekend. The Elburn Chamber of Commerce on Sunday will hold a bike ride, Folks on Spokes, that will benefit the parent teacher organizations at Blackberry Creek and John Stewart elementary schools in Elburn.

Registration fees from the ride also will go toward buying a bike rack for downtown Elburn.

This is the first year of the event. Check-in begins at 10 a.m. and ends at noon. Riders have three different options – a 2.5-mile ride, a 6-mile ride and a 10-mile ride. All routes start and end at Blackberry Creek Elementary School. Registration is $15 for a single rider and $30 for a group of four. There is an extra $5 fee for each additional rider, and the chamber will waive any late registration fees.

Those who want to participate can visit the chamber’s website, www.elburn.com, or register

at the event, said Westfall, the chamber’s treasurer, who is an avid bicyclist himself.

The longest ride, the 10-mile ride, will begin at Blackberry Creek Elementary School and head to John Stewart Elementary School. Westfall said he thought that ride would be of particular interest to students who attend those schools.

“We want to get kids out riding their bikes and being active,” he said.

Westfall, who co-owns Da Capo Music Studio in Elburn, anticipated his music students will participate in the ride.

“It would be wonderful to make a $1,000 donation to each of these PTOs,” he said. “I’m sure they could do a lot with $1,000.”

He believes installing a bike rack in downtown Elburn is a step toward making the village a more bike-friendly community. If the ride gets rained out, it would take place two weeks later on Aug. 30, Westfall said.

Arliss Fuhrmark Cox, age 94, of Geneva passed away peacefully in her home Saturday, August 8, 2015.

She was born October 31, 1920, in Hammond, Indiana the daughter of Arthur and Vada (LeVan) Fuhrmark.

She is survived by her children, Emerson A. (Stephanie Grace) Cox and Carol A. (Henry Joseph) Harvell.

Two grandsons, Christopher Charles Cox and Wyatt Emerson Harvell; as well as family member, Pamela Thorncroft; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Arliss was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson N. Cox on June 29, 2007.

FitMama facility moving back to LaFox

FitMama will move from Elburn to 1N279 LaFox Road in LaFox sometime during the week of Aug. 24, FitMama owner and founder Erin Schaefer said.

The fitness facility has alternated between Elburn and LaFox locations since its May 2011 launch. FitMama serves more than 220 women ages 12 to 76, Schaefer said.

“We’ve grown enough that we need a different type of space that will allow us to have multiple classes at the same time,” Schafer said.

FitMama will use nearly 3,000 square feet at the address, including an initial 2,400-square-foot space, a garage and another unit the business will expand into at a later time, Schaefer said.

FitMama offers Pilates, yoga, hot yoga, spinning, boot camp and classes that combine more than one of the activities, Schaefer said.

The business offers between 20 to 24 classes a week

with free food and drinks for volunteers at the end.

A grand opening will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 12 at the LaFox location with raffle prizes, time for guests to test the fitness equipment and discounts for new clients, Schaefer said.

Schaefer also plans to announce free Saturday boot camp sessions in various western Kane County neighborhoods to draw attention to the move.

Elburn business offers vintage and new items

Located at 138 N. Main St., Elburn, Frivolous Treasures owners Cheryl and Marc Kuta started the business in May 2010 in Elgin, and incorporated it in January 2011.

Cheryl Kuta lives in Elgin and still maintains another shop there, but she also has recently opened Frivolous Treasures in Elburn. Frivolous Treasures is a small business where customers can buy one-of-a-kind, vin-

tage and new items.

“I have a pretty good mixed variety of antique vintage and new, because not everybody is into vintage or antique,” Cheryl Kuta said.

She opened the business in Elburn because one of her co-dealers was unable to renew the lease on the building, which previously was Soaring Heart Vintage, and Cheryl Kuta decided to sign the lease after her co-dealers’ was up.

“I have a lot of dealers in here that I’ve worked with for years, and they rent space here and sell their items here, as well,” she said.

Including herself, Cheryl Kuta has five dealers working with her at Frivolous

Treasures, with two new dealers coming soon. She said one of the new dealers brings mostly handcrafted items.

“She does needle felting, she makes women’s accessories, she makes concrete bird baths and she makes everything herself,” Cheryl Kuta said.

Debb Wells, a current dealer, said she likes trying to find vintage items because, “it’s a lot of never knowing what you are going to find.”

Because of this unpredictability, “it’s very satisfying when people come in and they find an item that they just have to have,” Cheryl Kuta said.

As of now, the most pop-

ular items sold at Frivolous Treasure are cast-iron vanes, such as horses and witches, and other types of home décor.

Every day, Cheryl Kuta receives new items for the store to replace what goes out.

“People come in asking us if we have items that they’re looking for … so I let the other dealers know in their travels because you never know what you’re going to come across when you’re looking,” Cheryl Kuta said.

Wells said she enjoys Frivolous Treasures because, “it’s a place you can go that is local and you feel like you’re comfortable, and you feel like you’re part of the community.”

Getting to a yes on the Trans-Pacific Partnership BLOOMBERG NEWS The effort to establish the Trans-Pacific Partnership has stuttered, but don’t write off this far-reaching free-trade initiative just yet. Given the will – and a clearer understanding of the benefits – the deal can still be done.

The recent meeting in Hawaii of the U.S. and its 11 negotiating partners dashed hopes that the plan was about to be wrapped up. The session made progress but ended with troublesome issues still unresolved. TPP’s opponents would be glad to leave it at that and let the whole thing fizzle out. To stop that from happening, governments need to do a better job of explaining why the skeptics are wrong.

All manner of objections have been lodged against the deal, but two are mainly to blame for the lack of popular support.

The first is the claim that expanded trade would hurt more people than it would help. The second is the idea that trade is already more or less free, so what’s the big deal, anyway? TPP, it’s argued, is really about protecting the profits of U.S. pharmaceutical companies – and they’re doing fine already.

Governments have challenged these myths too feebly. Yes, expanded trade hurts some workers – just like competition and technological progress hurt some workers. Yet who doubts that competition and technology raise living standards? The parallel is exact. Expanded trade lowers prices and raises productivity. It drives greater prosperity. Its benefits greatly outweigh its costs.

You need only look at the issues that the TPP negotiators are wrestling with to dispense with the other objection. Trade reform has a lot of work still to do. The U.S. wants to shield its sugar producers. Canada wants to keep out dairy imports.

Japan wants to spare its consumers the stress of cheaper meat and rice. Governments are arguing over rules of origin that inflate the prices of imported cars, and over rules controlling the subsidies and other preferences they lavish on state-owned enterprises.

A deal that liberalized trade in these areas would be a breakthrough for consumers everywhere. Equipped with a better understanding of what’s at stake, voters might look more tolerantly on the compromises that getting to yes will require. Granted, it was never going to be easy. Canada’s prime minister, Stephen Harper, is preparing for elections, and polls say his Conservative Party is at risk of losing. Agreeing to a deal that harms farmers in Ontario and Quebec, the two most vote-rich provinces, won’t help his prospects. Japan treats its rice farmers as a national treasure, giving them outsized political power. In the U.S., Republican lawmakers threaten to reject the deal if it helps makers of generic drugs challenge U.S. producers; Democrats are more doubtful about the virtues of liberal trade than they have been for years.

The prize is the package as a whole – and in trade talks, a moment comes when the holdouts have to jump together or else the package unravels. If the cost of a particular provision seems too big for one country to accept, ways can be found to finesse the problem. Lower tariffs, loosened quotas or new standards can be gently phased in to give domestic producers time to adjust. Don’t give up. Do the deal.

The growing income gap between the wealthy and middle class is a subject that has aroused concerns of economists, politicians and sociologists, as well as the Pope. American capitalism thrives on consumption, but if working people and the middle class aren’t buying goods and services, businesses have little incentive to grow or hire additional workers. One could say that consumers are the real job creators. While some inequality is inevitable and necessary, the widening gap is alarming and is believed by many to be stifling the economy.

Robert Reich, President Clinton’s secretary of labor, has much to say about the subject, including recommendations for reducing economic inequality. (While Reich admittedly is a liberal economist, similar concerns have been expressed in more conservative publications such as U.S. News & World Report, Forbes and Bloomberg Business.)

Reich’s recommendations: 1. Raise the minimum wage and expand the Earned Income Tax Credit; 2. Unionize low-wage workers who lack real bargaining power; 3. Invest in education – early childhood through secondary schools; 4. Provide affordable public higher education and good technical/vocational education; 5. Pay for these investments with higher taxes on the wealthy; 6. Make the payroll tax progressive, the latter accounting for 40 percent of government revenues (one approach – “exempt the first $15,000 of wages and make up the difference by removing the cap on the portion of income subject to Social Security payroll taxes,” Reich says); 7. Raise the estate tax and eliminate the “stepped up basis” for determining capital gains at death; 8. Constrain Wall Street (“the biggest banks are still too big to fail, jail, or curtail – and

therefore capable of generating another crisis,” Reich says); 9. Resurrect Glass-Steagall, which separated commercial- and investment-banking functions; 10. Cap size of biggest banks; 11. Get big money out of politics and move toward public funding of elections.

While the chances of ideas like this getting serious attention by members of Congress may be slim, whether you agree or not, Reich offers some interesting food for thought, at a time when the economic recovery from the Great Recession of 2008 has greatly benefited the wealthy, but has been much less than robust for the middle class. There is a lot of anger and frustration out there on both the left and right, as evidenced by the rise in popularity of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. People want action, not rhetoric, the former sorely lacking from the current U.S. Congress.

Cougars get much needed offense in win

By RUSSELL HODGES editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Entering Tuesday night’s game against the Great Lakes Loons, the Cougars had averaged only 2.8 runs a game over their past eight games.

But the Cougars’ bats were hot early, and the team cruised to a 9-1 victory to start a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

“Huge win for us,” center fielder Colin Bray said.

“These six games here at home, playing in front of our home fans, are huge for us. We need to keep winning games and keep playing well to try to get into the playoffs.”

Left fielder Chuck Taylor began the Cougars’ offensive outburst with a single in the bottom of the first inning off Loons pitcher Isaac Anderson.

Second baseman Ildemaro Vargas was hit by a pitch, and Taylor scored after first baseman Marty Herum reached on an error by Loons shortstop Nick Dean.

After Vargas scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by designated hitter Henry Castillo, third baseman Cody Regis, Bray and shortstop Dawel Lugo connected on three consecutive singles to plate the Cougars’ third run of the game.

An error by Loons second baseman Willie Calhoun allowed Regis to score the Cougars’ fourth run, and Bray made it a 5-0 lead after Taylor hit his second single of the inning.

Lugo, who was 3 of 4 in the game and is 19 for 38 (.500) in his past 11 games, tried to score on Taylor’s single, but a great throw by Loons center fielder Alex Verdugo ended the Cougars’ scoring threat.

A home run by Bray in the third inning made it 6-0 Cougars, but the Loons responded with their first run of the game after Dean walked with the bases loaded in the fourth.

Great Lakes was unable to score again, though, as the Loons totaled only six hits in the game. And after RBIs by Vargas, Marty Herum and

Castillo in the eighth inning gave Kane County a 9-1 lead, the Cougars coasted the remainder of the way.

“From top to bottom, guys were battling each at-bat,” Bray said. “We were able to get guys on and get hits with runners in scoring position.”

Anderson, who surrendered only two runs in his past three outings for the Loons, lasted only one inning Tuesday night. He allowed five runs, two earned, and five hits while striking out one.

Pitcher Jared Miller, on the other hand, was solid in his first start for Kane County since May 12.

He walked five batters, but struck out six and allowed only one run on four hits in five innings.

Miller, who entered Tuesday with a 6.91 ERA in seven outings for the Cougars, made nine starts for Shor-A Hillsboro before returning to the Midwest League. He was 7-2 with a 1.81 ERA, 57 strikeouts and 12 walks for the Hops.

“He pounds the zone,” Bray said. “He competed. …

Jared’s got good stuff. When he’s down in the zone and he’s throwing hard, he gives us a chance to win.”

The Western Division-leading Cougars (32-12 second half, 68-44 overall) earned their fifth win in nine games as they continues their playoff push. Great Lakes (1826, 56-56) has lost seven of its past 10 games.

Left-hander Josh Taylor (2-1, 1.93 ERA) is the probable starter for the Cougars when the series resumes at 6:30 p.m. today.

Taylor pitched five innings and earned a no-decision against the South Bend Cubs on Thursday. He struck out six batters while walking three and surrendering two earned runs.

Right-hander Tommy Bergjans (0-1, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Loons.

Bergjans has struck out 14 batters and given up just one earned run over his past two starts.

Newbies happily find way on golf course Leave it to a man named Keven Arnold to reincarnate “The Wonder Years.”

Actually, in the case of Arnold’s daughter, St. Charles North freshman girls golfer Sarah Arnold, it’s the wonder year and a half.

That’s about how long Arnold has been golfing competitively as she prepares for North Stars tryouts, which Sarah begin today.

Arnold It’s a trend that other schools are experiencing, too, creating another kind of short game that has nothing to do with the green.

“I started out not wanting to play golf. My dad brought me out. I wasn’t good,” Arnold said. “So then he’s like, ‘I know you can do something with this.’ So then he kept having me do it. I got better, and then I got new clubs and everything, and now I like

Arnold pauses when asked what ultimately hooked her on the sport. She could go so many ways; pinpoint so many sensations.

She identifies the two bookends of most holes – driving and putting – as the strongest parts of her game.

Both served Arnold well at Pottawatomie Golf Course last month, as she shot a twoday 88 for 18 holes to win the Girls 12-14 division of the St. Charles Junior Tournament.

St. Charles East junior Rose Bundy carded an 80 to win the Girls 15-17 crown.

She, too, only began playing shortly before enrolling in high school.

Bundy missed qualifying for the IHSA Class AA state

meet by one stroke in 2014, and credits a diligent practice routine for helping accelerate her game in the past year.

“It’s just the right age to start,” Bundy said. “Sometimes, if you start too early, you never progress. Whereas in a short time, I’ve progressed a lot more than a lot of other girls.”

To be sure, the Kane County Chronicle girls and boys golfing scenes abound with players who gripped clubs well before early adolescence.

But their late blooming counterparts are making themselves heard, and aspire to make a bigger impact this fall.

Hit parade: A segment of Kaneland’s band practiced adjacent to the football team on Tuesday morning, simulating part of the gameday experience.

“Oh, yeah,” senior wide receiver/linebacker Mitch Groen said. “Drumline gets

me going a little bit.”

Band or not, the hits figure to keep on coming Saturday, when the Knights and the rest of their brethren statewide are allowed to practice in full gear for the first time.

“When we start hitting it up on Saturday, we’ll get a better idea,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said.

Good thing one of the Knights’ newcomers is adept at bouncing off tackles. In fact, it’s in his blood.

Freshman running back Jonathan Alstott is a cousin of longtime NFL fullback Mike Alstott, a Joliet Catholic and Illinois product who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2006.

“He’s a pretty good football player,” Fedderly said.

Swanson starts career: The Dansby Swanson saga is about to begin.

The parent Arizona Diamondbacks have announced that Swanson, the No. 1 overall pick in June’s Major

League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, will start his professional baseball career with Class-A Hillsboro (Oregon) today.

A skilled shortstop who helped Vanderbilt to a runner-up finish in the College World Series on the heels of the Commodores’ 2014 national title, Swanson was out with a concussion sustained after being hit by a pitch at the Diamondbacks’ spring training facility.

This summer, D’backs officials said it was possible Swanson could end up with the Class-A Cougars in 2015 pending his evaluation and development.

There are 26 games remaining in the Midwest League regular season.

NHL is actively monitoring Kane case

CHICAGO – Just like everybody else, the NHL is keeping a close eye on the Patrick Kane investigation in Hamburg, N.Y., but waiting for more facts before reaching a conclusion.

The NHL is “following developments” in the police investigation, which reportedly involves Kane and a woman at the Blackhawks star’s Hamburg home last weekend.

The NHL’s security personnel has relationships with local law enforcement in all league cities, so there’s no plan to assign an independent investigator. The league has the luxury of time and can let the legal process play out, because the alleged incident happened in the offseason.

“You can assume we are doing everything we need to be doing from the league’s perspective,” deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Chicago Sun-Times in an email, declining to get into more specifics.

When the Buffalo News first reported the story last week, the Hawks offered this statement: “We are aware of the matter and are in the process of gathering information. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

BURLINGTON – Burlington Central senior girls basketball standout Sam Pryor has reopened her recruitment after her March commitment to Northern Illinois, according to a tweet from her AAU program, Midwest Elite.

Kathi Bennett, the coach who recruited Pryor, resigned in April after five seasons at the school. Former Lewis coach Lisa Carlsen took over in June.

Pryor, a forward, averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game for the Rockets as a junior. The Huskies offered her a scholarship in July 2014, but Pryor also garnered interest from several East Coast schools.

Bushrod ‘stronger’ now after injuries

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com BOURBONNAIS – Perhaps you’ve wondered about the physical toll on an NFL offensive lineman in his ninth NFL training camp, coming off his first injury-shortened season in years.

Bears starting left tackle Jermon Bushrod said let your imagination soar.

“I feel like an offensive lineman that’s about to turn 31 in a week and a half, so you can use your Jermon imagination,” Bushrod joked Bushrod on Tuesday after the Bears’ 11th practice of camp.

After knee and ankle injuries cost Bushrod two starts in 2014, halting his streak of 80 consecutive games played, the new regime has been careful with him. Bushrod has been held out of two camp practices (coaches decision) and missed the majority of the spring practices with a back ailment.

Bushrod explained Tuesday he’d rather battle through practices with his teammates at less than 100 percent than be a bystander, but he appreciates coach John Fox’s prudent approach.

“For me not to be a part of it is tough, but I understand the situation,” he said.

Ultimately, of course, the reason for holding out Bushrod now is to avoid another situation as tough as 2014, when injuries forced the Bears to use eight starting offensive line combinations after being only one of three NFL clubs in 2013 to use the same one in every game.

The Bears mostly have resisted the urge to experiment with Kyle Long outside, and with only 2014 seventh-round-

er Charles Leno behind Bushrod, they know a healthy Bushrod is vital. He had a down year two years removed from a Pro Bowl invitation in 2013, but Bushrod, the Bears’ third-highest paid player in 2015, showed signs that when healthy, he can have a resurgent 2015.

From injuries to negative plays, however, last season’s tumult is in the past, according to Bushrod. He’s focused on the future, which he’s confident will be brighter namely because Fox, Adam Gase and the staff are committed to positioning the club for success.

“We’ve just got to continue to stick to the plan and I think our coaches will do a good job of that – I think they’re going to put us in good positions – and, honestly, it’s up to us to do the rest,” he said. “Coaches can’t play. We have to go out there and execute our assignments, detail our techniques and finish.”

Even without Bushrod naming names, it isn’t difficult to read between the lines about last year’s ineffectiveness on offense, a unit that plummeted from No. 2 in scoring in 2013 to No. 23 last season and regularly abandoned game plans – or worse, didn’t prioritize the run game enough to start – under former coach Marc Trestman.

Moreover, Bushrod said he thinks his offseason regimen, combined with the extra time off, should help come September.

“My strength is going to be there. … It’s not about trying to kill it in the weight room,” he said. “It’s about working on the smaller muscles, working on the stabilizing muscles, working on everything you can to try and have a stronger core, and then as an offensive lineman, you can be better.

“Honestly, I feel like it’s been paying off. I feel a little stronger this year.”

Recovery is everywhere.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can overcome fear of flying Dear Doctor K: When I am forced to fly, I sweat and shake and feel like I’m going to faint.

I’ve been avoiding work-related travel, and I’m holding my family back from taking long-distance vacations. What can I do to get over my fear?

Dear Reader: You suffer from a type of anxiety disorder called flight phobia or, in medicalese, “aviophobia.” A phobia is an extreme fear of something that poses little or no real danger. Fear of flying, heights, animals, insects and the like are all phobias.

Fear of flying is actually pretty common – and it can affect quite powerful people. For example, the founding dictator of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, allegedly suffered from flight phobia, as does the son to whom his mantle of dictatorship was passed, Kim Jong-il.

Of course, the isolation of their country from the world didn’t require them to fly to many other places. Indeed, flying to many countries would have been quite inadvisable.

Even the most powerful person in the world for eight years, President Ronald Reagan, allegedly had flight phobia. Before becoming a politician, he traveled by train whenever possible. After entering politics, he just gritted his teeth and accepted the inevita-

It sounds as though your phobia triggers a panic attack. If so, you may also have other symptoms, such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath or palpitations. You may feel that you are losing control.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the leading form of therapy for anxiety. It aims to correct ingrained patterns of negative thoughts and behaviors. As the name suggests, it has two parts.

Cognitive therapy helps people change patterns of thinking that prevent them from overcoming their fears. Behavioral therapy works to change their reactions in situations that trigger anxiety.

A form of CBT called desensitization (also called exposure) can be particularly effective for phobias and panic disorders.

Exposure therapy involves having people face their fears directly. This can be done in several ways. One is through role-playing. Another is by having a person imagine frightening situations and describing them.

Yet another strategy is to

actually put people in real-life situations that spark anxiety. The reasoning is that avoiding anxiety-causing situations reinforces fears or false beliefs. In real-life situations, people can recognize inaccurate or negative thoughts and substitute realistic ones.

With repeated exposure, people eventually become desensitized to fear-provoking situations.

You may not need ongoing treatment if you encounter the thing you are afraid of only occasionally and predictably, as it tends to be with air travel. In such a case, anti-anxiety drugs such as lorazepam and clonazepam can help. You can take them only when needed. The goal is to find a dose that reduces symptoms enough so that you can get on the plane and stay calm enough while en route.

Given the intensity you describe, it is probably a good idea for you to explore therapy and medication. Most people find that anti-anxiety medicine plus a simple relaxation technique, such as deep breathing, is enough to make air travel bearable.

This week, we are looking at New Minor Forcing. We have stepped over the textbook start to an NMF auction: one of a minor – one of a major – one no-trump – two of the unbid minor. The responder’s rebid is artificial, promises at least game-invitational, and asks opener for more information. But what does responder’s three-club jump-rebid mean in this deal?

With a strong hand, responder would first use NMF, then continue with three clubs. So three clubs should be a weak signoff, showing six or more clubs and no interest in game.

One no-trump would go down two. How should South plan the play in three clubs after West leads the heart king? Did West have a more effective opening salvo?

South starts with six losers: two spades, one heart and three clubs.

Here, if declarer immediately plays a trump, hoping for a 2-2 trump break, East will take three club tricks, and the contract will fail.

Instead, declarer should immediately cash dummy’s top diamonds and discard his second heart.

Then he should take his top spades, ruff a spade in the dummy, ruff a red suit back to his hand, and ruff his last spade. East may overruff, but the contract is safe.

West would have defeated the contract with a trump lead – tough to find.

When you have a weak hand with a long suit, bail from no-trump into your suit.
