The Festival of the Horse and Drum will be Saturday and Sunday at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road in St. Charles. The event is billed as the country’s only multicultural, multimedia equestrian festival.

“We’ve very eclectic – there’s something for everyone,” said Lisa Diersen, festival founder and creative director.

The festival will be divided up into special sections, including an equine abilities expo, a model horse show, a cowboy town, a kids corral and the Horse-A-Palooza stage with live music.

In the war horse history fest section, the event for the first time will have up to five re-ennactment groups coming, covering periods such as

LOCAL NEWS New security measures begin at D-304 schools KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – After implementing a pilot visitor management system at Geneva Middle School North, officials said the system will be permanently implemented there, beginning Aug. 20, as well as at Geneva High School, Geneva Middle School South and Mill Creek Elementary School, Geneva School District 304 officials said.

The new Raptor V-Soft Visitor Management System requires visitors to present identification and be screened before being allowed access to the building.

The system is expected to be implemented at the district’s five remaining elementary schools later this school year.

In a prepared statement, Superintendent Kent Mutchler said the implementation of this system is one additional step to enhance the overall security of buildings to provide safe school environments for students and staff.

Visitors to the schools will be required to present a driver’s license or other state-issued identification. A building secretary will enter the identification into the Raptor system.

The identification will be cross-referenced with a database of sex offenders throughout the U.S., as well

as any court orders provided to the district to protect students.

The identification presented will be held in the main office and be returned when the visitor leaves.

Those cleared by the V-Soft System will be issued a visitor badge and lanyard that must be visibly worn while in the school and returned to the school office upon leaving.

If a potential threat is identified, the V-Soft System instantly will alert designated officials, such as administrators and law enforcement.

In these cases, visitors will be denied access to the building.

In addition, visitors to Geneva High School will enter through a newly constructed McKinley Street entrance, which now features a glass enclosure. Visitors will be welcomed by staff and screened by the Raptor system before entering the building.

“We truly hope that all of our parents, volunteers and visitors understand that our purpose for implementing this system is not to restrict their access to our schools but to further safeguard our students,” Mutchler said in a statement. “Given the current climate, we feel confident that parents and volunteers will understand the need for taking such precautions.”

D-304 drops class rank in favor of GPA distribution

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva High School seniors will be the last class to have a class rank, as the Geneva District 304 school board voted Monday to drop individual class ranking in favor of a grade point average distribution statistic.

The change would affect this year’s juniors and all the classes after that, officials said.

The high school administration studied the issue for two years, asking how colleges and universities use them and if its students would be negatively impacted if it was no longer reported, officials said.

Twenty-eight suburban districts – including New Trier Township High School

District 203, Main Township High School District 207 and Barrington High School in District 220 – all do not report students’ individual class rank, officials said.

Also, colleges and university reported that even when the ranking is on a student’s application, it is not used in admissions decisions, officials said.

Geneva High School Principal Tom Rogers said dropping class ranking can reduce unhealthy competition among high-achieving students whose grade point averages are a hundredth of a point. At the same time, it can open up other opportunities for students, he said.

“Our attempt to eliminate that unhealthy competition – we want students to take courses and challenge themselves for all the right rea-

sons,” Rogers said. “Rather than not challenging themselves because they don’t want to sacrifice potential rank that they might have earned.”

For example, some students will not challenge themselves in an advanced placement course where they risk a B grade – while others might not take an art course for the same reason, officials said.

“All colleges that we surveyed said they don’t use it, we don’t want to do anything that would hinder their ability to get into that school,” Rogers said. “As we examined our class rank compared to the percentage rank that we are going to use, using the GPA distribution will enhance the standings of our students when they go to apply to a university.”

“I never take the summer off,” Morrison said. “I don’t shut the door at the first of June and say goodbye until school starts. If you are not here working, you are reading new material and preparing your curriculum for the year. With the new Common Core curriculum, it does take a lot of preparation.”

That’s been her summer routine for many years. Morrison, 53, has taught at Heartland for 10 years and previously taught in Tennessee for 11 years.

She took some time off from teaching to raise a family.

As she prepares for school to start this year, Morrison also recently saw her oldest son, William, off to college.

Morrison said she realizes she doesn’t have to work during the summer. Geneva teachers aren’t required to report to school until Monday, two days before students arrive.

“It is up to the individual teacher,” she said. “Nobody monitors if you are coming or

I feel better when I’m prepared, so when the children get here, my time will be spent on them.”

Fortunately, she happens to live in Geneva near the school.

Morrison said she enjoys the convenience of being able to drop by the school whenever she wants.

Along with preparing for the new school year, Morrison has spent part of the summer tutoring students.

“You want to make sure their skills are fresh and do not regress over the summer,” Morrison said. “Sometimes, they need a little boost.”

Despite the demands of being a first-grade teacher, Morrison said it is a job she loves. She said “the rewards far outweigh the demands.”

“It is so rewarding seeing

the growth they attained,” she said. “I can’t imagine anything that is more rewarding.”

Fellow Heartland firstgrade teacher Deidra Cook spent some of her summer moving her classroom.

She recently was in her new classroom making sure

that everything was in place for the arrival of her students.

She had to move a few classrooms down from her previous classroom to make way for a kindergarten class, a process that was time-consuming.

“Everything had to be

picked up,” Cook said. “I was packing everything up as soon as school was over in June.”

During the summer, Cook said she also worked on projects that she didn’t have time for during the school year, such as creating math centers for her students. Cook knew exactly what tasks she wanted to take on.

“I made a list during the school year of things I would like to get to,” she said.

But she didn’t spend all of the summer in her classroom.

Cook also was able to spend time with her family. She said she usually would come in one day a week during the summer.

Cook said she looks forward for the new school year to begin.

“I’m ready to start,” she said. “When August comes, I’m ready to get back.”

Bryan Lantz agreed with his brother and said the smiles on students’ faces when they get their backpacks is priceless.

Storey said the event is about more than just backpacks. One of the center’s gyms was host to 24 different agencies ready to talk to families and hand out materials, including a bag of lunch and dinner goods from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Diana Hernandez of Streamwood was not aware there was going to be so many different groups at the event.

She picked up information from Administer Justice, a nonprofit charitable legal aid organization, and her three siblings picked up backpacks with supplies.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, and State Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, and Foster’s opponent in the race for Illinois’ 11th Congressional District seat, will be set to square off in a series of debates before the Nov. 4 general election.

Senger previously had criticized Foster for not agreeing to debate her.

“Foster and his 2012 opponent, Judy Biggert, met numerous times during that campaign, but the congressman has yet to accept any formal requests made by the organizations offering public debates,” Senger said in a news release.

Senger has accepted debate or forum invitations from The League of Women Voters, The

Civic Committee of Carillon Lakes in Crest Hill and the Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation, she said in the release.

Foster said he wants to debate Senger.

“As a scientist and businessman, I have always believed that it is important to have the facts out on the table and an open discussion on the issues so that voters can make an informed decision in every election,” Foster said in his own release.

He is challenging Senger to the same debate and forum schedule as he had with Biggert – a joint meeting with the “Chicago Tribune” editorial board, a community forum at Temple Beth Shalom, a debate sponsored by ABC 7 Chicago and the League of Women Voters and a joint appearance on WTTW.

ELGIN – Vera Milwee of Carpentersville said there already was a large crowd Saturday at the Elgin Community College campus when she arrived at 6 a.m.

Milwee, her daughter and her granddaughter, both of Hanover Park, filed into a line that snaked around the side of the college’s Spartan Events Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, to a bus stop. When they emerged from the building about 4½ hours later, they had four backpacks, one for her granddaughter and the rest for her three grandsons.

“It’s a very good cause,” Milwee said. “I wish more communities would do something like this.”

Milwee’s family took four of the 2,800 backpacks donated for Project Backpack, which is an initiative to distribute school supplies to local families on a first-come, firstserved basis. The first family arrived at 8:15 p.m. Friday, but the center did not open until 9 a.m. Saturday, said Katie Storey, the college’s Student Life Coordinator and leader of

Project Backpack.

The event Saturday helped hundreds of families within Elgin Community College District 509 boundaries, which includes a part of St. Charles School District 303. Families were required at the event to provide proof of residency or school enrollment within the college’s boundaries.

The program, in its fifth year, continues to serve an increasing number of families, Storey said. School district homeless liaisons told her on Saturday there are about 1,000 homeless students in District U-46 and about 300 in District 300. There are about 40,000 students total in those districts that qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, Storey said.

About 75 volunteers Thursday helped fill the backpacks with supplies, and more than 100 volunteers Saturday were on hand to assist during the actual event, including brothers Taylor and Bryan Lantz, both 23, of Elgin.

Batavia Green Fair provides healthy tips

“It’s a substitute for nutrition,” said Shar Johnson-Dunlop, a board member for the Batavia-based Just Food Initiative. “It is used to put taste in food that doesn’t have taste.

It’s a substitute for getting real food.”

Just Food Initiative was one of the groups represented at the Green Fair, designed to raise awareness about sustainable living, physical fitness and healthy living.

The event, put on by Batavia MainStreet, the Batavia Park

District, city of Batavia and the Batavia Environmental Commission, previously was known as Batavia Green Walk.

The nonprofit group, formed in 2009, tries to educate consumers on how they can make healthier food choices, such as growing one’s one own food and avoiding genetically modified food.

“We are trying to restore quality and equality to the food system,” said Christine Stevens, executive director of Just Food Initiative.

GENEVA – An unmarked light switch in the Kane County morgue has caused yet another problem for the coroner’s office.

Crews conducting mold remediation in the Geneva facility last month turned the switch off in the course of their work, Coroner Rob Russell said.

But instead of turning off lights, he said, the flipped switch turned off refrigeration units containing thousands of samples of blood and Rob Russell body tissue – materials that could be tied to criminal and civil litigation.

On Monday, Russell briefly turned the switch off to demonstrate his bewilderment that the crews didn’t notice the noisy refrigeration units were silenced with the switch.

“Gee, it really got quiet here,” Russell said.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the coroner could have taken such precautions as labeling or covering the switch to prevent the situation from happening. He noted people are trained to turn off lights.

“If the lights are on and you’re going to leave the room, what do you do?” Lauzen said.

Russell doesn’t know how

long the refrigeration units were off, as he and his staff weren’t in the building at the time of remediation, he said.

The remediation was done by a company hired by the county, Lauzen said. He did not have the cost of information readily available Monday but described it as “expensive.”

Since finding the refrigeration units turned off, Russell’s staff has been working to catalog the contents – a time-consuming task because of the office’s antiquated filing system, he said.

The list ultimately will be given to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. In addition to distributing the list internally, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said his office will disclose the information to the court and to the defense counsel of any and all pending cases related to the samples.

“It’s premature to guess how it’s going to impact any of the cases,” McMahon said.

But, he said – acknowledging he won’t know for sure until his office gets the list – “we don’t believe it’s going to have a negative impact.”

Russell, meanwhile, is in the process of buying new equipment so forensic operations can return to Kane County.

The operations were outsourced to DuPage County when the mold was found.

Members of the County Board directed him last week to get his facilities operational.

Traffic patterns to change on LaFox Road Wednesday On Wednesday, traffic will

be switched from the east side of LaFox Road to the new pavement along the west side of the road (between Campton Hills Road and Route 38).

Robin Williams, the Juilliard-trained actor and irrepressibly exhibitionist comic who became one of the most dazzling all-around talents in show business, winning an Academy Award for a dramatic role in “Good Will Hunting” and an Emmy for his stand-up work, was found dead Monday at his home in Tiburon, California.

He was 63.

In a release, Keith Boyd, assistant chief deputy coroner in Marin County, said the cause was suspected to be suicide due to asphyxia, but an investigation is continuing.

Long fueled by an alcohol and cocaine addiction, Mr. Williams was a motormouthed and an unpredictable entertainer in whatever medium he was working, whether movies, TV, Broadway, or gala performances before Prince Charles of England. “In England, if you commit a crime, the police don’t own a gun and you don’t have a gun,” he told an audience, referring to the tactics of London police toward criminals. “So it’s stop ... or I’ll say stop again.”

He was a satirist, Os car-winning dramatic actor and mimic of everyone from Carol Channing to Jack Nicholson, from a British actor rendering “Hamlet” to a ghetto tough to Henry Kissinger channeling morgue-voiced actor Peter Lorre. He once said he took a crash course in Russian and was so good that he fooled real Russians into thinking he was one of them, “or else Czech or Polish.”

Audiences gravitated to his unprintably profane comic riffs on guns, drugs, God and politics. Of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former

bodybuilder and Hollywood action star-turned California governor, Mr. Williams equated Schwarzenegger’s branding as a moderate Republican to “a Volvo with a gunrack – you don’t see a lot of them.”

Of the lackluster economy toward the end of President George W. Bush’s administration, Mr. Williams pointed out, “They say the economy is essentially sound because people are considering buying things. That’s like saying fat people are healthy because they might exercise.”

Once, upon spotting a man carrying a poster from Alcatraz prison, he shouted, “A gift shop at Alcatraz!” and in a child’s voice pleaded, “Daddy, get me the electric chair.”

It was nearly impossible to harness his style – and most audiences gravitated to the comic. Although, when under skilled direction, he was able to offer restrained and surprisingly deft dramatic portraits.

‘Space weather’ threatens to leave us in the dark THE WASHINGTON POST You probably haven’t noticed, but the sun has been more restless lately. Scientists have been predicting an upswing in volatile solar behavior, resulting in “space weather” that poses a surprisingly dangerous threat to modern society. A big “coronal mass ejection” is one of the least commonly discussed natural hazards humanity faces, but experts warn that “everything that plugs into a wall socket” could be at risk if the products of one hit the planet.

The danger is not hypothetical. A huge coronal mass ejection hit the Earth in 1859, inducing dangerous sparks in telegraph offices, some of which burned to the ground.

In 1921, the planet saw a similar episode. But humans now rely much more on vast electricity grids. A lesser solar event in 1989 knocked out electric power to millions in Quebec. Because humans don’t have extensive experience with large-scale geomagnetic storms in the age of ubiquitous electric power, predicting exactly how one would play out is tough. A National Academy of Sciences study warned in 2009 that the costs could be staggering, ending electric power to millions, damaging power-grid equipment, costing up to $2 trillion during the first year of recovery, and taking four to 10 years to rebuild. Access to basic necessities, such as potable water and toilet facilities, could be limited because a big coronal mass ejection could knock out the electric pumps that drive public water systems.

But maybe the probability of an extreme coronal mass ejection hitting Earth is low enough to allay concern? Alarmingly, the budding science of space weather tentatively suggests otherwise. A recent NASA write-up highlighted a huge, 1859-style coronal mass ejection that narrowly missed Earth two years ago. It instead slammed into a close-by, sun-observing probe built to resist interplanetary stresses, which sent back reams of new data on these events. NASA cited an analysis concluding that the chances Earth will be hit by a similarly large event in the next decade are a too-high-for-comfort 12 percent. That’s higher than the probability that a major earthquake will strike the San Francisco area over the same time period.

The world can do more to prepare, adapting satellite systems, toughening electric grids and, above all, ensuring that scientists have the tools they need to anticipate space weather. With some warning, for example, electrical grid operators can adjust the systems they control to avoid damaging “ground currents” induced by the geomagnetic disturbances from large coronal mass ejections.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration maintains the Space Weather Prediction Center, though with a tiny budget. Meanwhile, funding constraints perpetually threaten to erode the coverage of satellite-based sensors that monitor all sorts of phenomena on Earth and elsewhere – including the sun. Congress has a poor record of remembering to keep these sorts of important scientific tools in mind at funding time. For a variety of reasons – including the threat of severely inclement space weather – lawmakers must take a wider view.

Preseason football practice began throughout the area Monday, and teams had an early opportunity to test their problem-solving skills ahead of their Aug. 29 season openers.

“We had to come off the field, but we’re still going to get stuff done,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “So the varsity got their weightlifting in and the freshmen and sophomores are watching the mandatory IHSA concussion video right now.”

Preseason practice launched two days before the traditional Wednesday startup, helping compensate for tighter IHSA restrictions on preseason practice time. The IHSA disposed of the traditional two-a-day sessions to open preseason camp and banned summer tackling as part of a recent flurry of player safety measures.

“It’ll be interesting with the two extra days,” said Geneva coach Rob Wicinski, whose team again opened its preseason off campus, at Good Templar Park. “You know, you always feel you don’t have enough days, and I’m sure I’ll feel I still don’t have enough days, even with the two extra days.

“I’m ready to get moving and the coaches keep telling me, ‘Just take a deep breath.

You’ve got a lot of time.’ But it just feels like 18 days is going to come around pretty fast, so I’m always a little bit anxious about that stuff.”

Pomazak – also intends to put the next two-plus weeks to good use. Despite plenty of summer progress, the tail end of Monday’s practice made it clear the North Stars are far from a finished product, as route confusion marred an offensive sequence.

“We just put our 2-minute drill in [during a camp at North Central College] so that’s one thing we kind of expected to be something that’s still not

perfect,” Pomazak said. “By no means do we expect things to be perfect right now.

“I think some of the route mishaps were from the second group, and that just goes to show you why it’s important that everybody knows what they’re doing, whether you’re a first-stringer or a second-stringer or a scout team player.”

ed an encouraging response to the groundwork he’s attempting to lay after being promoted from the sophomore level to replace Mike Fields.

“Just setting what your priorities are,” Farquhar said.

Temple reminisced about watching Santacaterina’s older brother, Michael, as a grade-schooler in 2008, saying the then-junior running back/defensive back and his teammates were “what made me want to be a Viking.”

Geneva advanced to the Class 7A state title game that season, and had allowed only 166 points in 13 games before East St. Louis won the championship, 33-14.

“It’s crazy to think that we’re them now,” Loberg said. “We’re out there.”

Out there and accountable.

But far from welcoming, they hope.

“We have competitions every day,” Farquhar said. “If you’re to the point that you don’t have competition, really, you’re going to have a flat team. We have kids that are trying to challenge for spots on a daily basis.”

East briefly shifted inside at the start of practice Monday morning because of wet fields but mostly stayed on schedule. Much to the players’ delight, practice featured a booming soundtrack, a new touch this season.

“From wrestling and stuff, we always had music, and then after we went to the [team camp at Western Illinois University last month], they had it, so the whole team kind of wanted to push for it,” East senior Ramon Lopez said.

When it comes to making noise around the Tri-Cities football scene in recent years, nobody does it better than defending IHSA Class 6A state

champion Batavia. Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron detected no drop-off in the program’s sense of purpose in the aftermath of the program’s first state title.

“These guys have worked as hard as any group we’ve ever had, if not harder,” Piron said.

“I always felt the class we had last year, those seniors were a special group. These guys have always had to work to prove themselves for those guys to accept them, and clearly they accepted the underclassmen last year and built a great team together. I think that work ethic, and how hard they’ve had to work to get the things they’ve wanted in athletics, in school, they’re a very, very bright class.”

And a class that appears to be better at hitting opponents than hitting the sack. Batavia offensive lineman Patrick Gamble already has a sleep deficit to address.

“Well, I try to go to bed early, but that doesn’t really happen, because the anticipation factor,” Gamble said. “You’re just ready to go. I was up at 5:30 this morning, and we had to be here at 8. I was just ready, you know. Just sitting at my house, getting all my gear ready. It’s exactly that. It’s like Christmas Eve. It’s nothing like a game, but it’s still the excitement.”

His garb in no way represented any hostility toward sandwiches, nor was a tie-in to #LetsEat, Batavia’s motivational offseason Twitter hashtag that sprouted from defending its Class 6A state title.

“Oh, this is just a shirt I bought,” Gamble said. “It works out.” #LetsEat also proved conveniently prevalent at other times this summer, namely when Gamble and classmates Nick Bernabei, Noah Frazier and Mitchell Krusz joined coach Dennis Piron in the latest round of occasional captain’s dinners.

Naturally, the 2013 season was a topic of conversation during the meals. Although the Bulldogs aim to turn the page from their title run to

recharge for another in 2014, there still are elements they’ll forever embrace.

“Just the feeling, how awesome it is,” said Frazier, a fullback and defensive lineman.

“The biggest thing we talked about last year [in postseason] was you get one more game for our seniors. You get one more game with your teammates and kids you grew up with, you know.

“We’ve been together since childhood, playing backyard football, and this is it. After this, you know, a lot of us are going to go off. We won’t see each other, at the very least, for a long time. So we know it’s just about getting to the playoffs, then just getting one more game with your brothers.”

Backing up: Ramon Lopez was a two-way stalwart for St. Charles East last season, and projects to remain so as a senior – with a twist.

Lopez still is part of East’s running back rotation but defensively is shifting to free safety after mostly playing linebacker in the past.

East has a substantial void at safety with Brannon Barry’s graduation and should be OK with its linebacker depth in its 4-2-5 defensive scheme.

“It’s a little different because I’m used to being up but it’s a lot of fun,” Lopez said.

“With the way our defense is working, I’m still coming up a lot on the run to help out.

“It’s something to get used to and we’re working through but it’s a lot of fun.”

Injury bug still biting: Marmion has been one of the area’s hardest-hit programs by injury in recent years, and the trend is continuing. Already, projected two-way starters Jordan Glasgow (meniscus surgery) and Sean Campbell (stress fracture) are sidelined.

Both running backs/defensive backs should return in time to play most of the season, according to Cadets coach Dan Thorpe.

Glasgow, one of the area’s top running backs, also saw his junior season dampened by injury.

“I’m not happy but I’m kind of excited that we [already] knocked out two out of those five injuries that you kind of have every year,” Thorpe said.

“So we’ll get Sean back, we’ll get Jordan back, and what it does is give other kids the opportunity to step up. We always say, ‘The phone’s ringing, who’s going to answer it?’

The St. Charles school lacrosse teams will play other IHSA-sanctioned teams, said Mike Sommerfeld, St. Charles East athletic director. The IHSA needs 65 boys teams and 40 girls teams in all to have a state lacrosse championship.

The estimated annual cost to the district to offer lacrosse is $75,000. To phase in the overall cost to the district, the schools will charge each participant $400 the first year and decrease that amount over the next four years until the regular $100 amount that other athletes currently pay is reached. During this time, the cost to the district will increase to make up the difference, according to the proposal.

SPORTS BRIEF Tigers release Crosby DETROIT – Kaneland product Casey Crosby, a left-hander in the Detroit Tigers organization, was given his unconditional release Monday as part of a wave of roster moves.

Detroit promoted relievers Kevin Whelan, Ian Krol and Justin Miller from Triple-A Toledo before Monday’s series opener against Pittsburgh. The club cut Crosby, 25, to make room for Whelan on its 40-man roster.

A fifth-round selection of the Tigers in 2007, Crosby endured injury troubles throughout his career.

He was 0-0 with a 5.71 ERA in 11 appearances and 171⁄3 innings for Toledo this season with 13 walks and 12 strikeouts.

Crosby made his major league debut on June 1, 2012, as part of a three-start stint with the Tigers that season. He was 1-1 with a 9.41 ERA in 121⁄3 innings.

The St. Charles School District 303 Board on Monday voted, 6-1, in favor of adding lacrosse as a fully sanctioned IHSA activity at the high schools. Board member Judith McConnell voted no on the proposal because she did not want to see taxpayer money diverted to boys and girls lacrosse programs at the schools.

The programs will start out with a boys varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams at both high schools. The girls will have a varsity and junior varsity co-op teams between the schools, according to a proposal from the high schools’ athletic departments.

There are 172 students that played under the schools’ previous club format, and the high schools’ athletic directors contended there is a large enough need to accommodate teams at the schools, the proposal said.

The club’s goal all along was to become a school team, said Jeff Richman, one of the club’s board members. He attended the Monday’s school board

Tougher Bob Leonard River Run races on

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Changes that made the races more challenging in Saturday’s eighth annual Bob Leonard River Run and Walk did not deter runners from competing in the events.

The 5K course was changed to make it more difficult and a 10K race was added.

Race officials had to close walk-up registration for the two running events because they ran out of racing bibs and timing chips.

“Based on the bibs and based on the amount of the attendees, this was the largest event to date that the Bob Leonard River Run and Walk has done,” said Julie Farris, president of CMF Events, the company that managed the races.

Ninety-three chipped runners competed in the 10K and 157 ran in the 5K. Runners agreed that the 10K course, which started in Pottawatomie Park, crossed the Fox River and winded its way to Randall Road before returning to the park, was taxing.

“I would say the switches they put in there about mile four [was the hardest part of the course],” 10K male winner Matt Sagan said.

Sagan, a senior on the Riverside-Brookfield High School cross country team, finished with a time of 37:53.05. His younger brother, Jack, took third, crossing the finish line in 39:55.85.

“This [race] is more for me and my brother. This is like our preseason training,” said

the older Sagan. “Our season starts on Wednesday.”

Farris said most of the 5K course remained the same as in the past.

“We changed it a little bit in sections with stairs and making it a little more difficult,” Farris said.

“Running in the grass and the switchback in the hills, I wasn’t expecting that this year,” said David Phelps, a St. Charles resident who took fifth place in the 10K male division and first in the 40-49 male category.

Elburn resident and Northern Illinois University dance student Jessica Lewis, who came in third in the 20-29 female group in the 10K, said she was surprised at the hills.

Rounding out the top three male 10K winners was Matt Baker (38:15.32) from Polo.

Oswego resident Stephanie Johnson finished first in the female 10K division. She completed the circuit in 40:06.78.

Sue Russell of DeKalb took second (45:14.22) and Bartlett’s Grace Churney finished third (46:48.99).

Stephanie Howe, 13, of Geneva took top honors in the female division of the 5K race with a time of 20:01.13.

Emily Belanger, also of Geneva, took second in the 5K female division (22:24.44). Beth Daniel, from Tullahoma, Tennessee, came in third (22:44.59).

Top 5K honors in the male division went to Matt Rolain of Rochester, Michigan (17:43.31); James Myal of St. Charles (19:37.60) and Dan Roder of Elgin (20:05.83).

A recent auction sold Hermes and other famous branded purses for thousands of dollars each. A used, limited-edition Hermes “Noisette Gulliver Leather Quelle Idole Kelly Doll Bag” in excellent condition sold at auction in April 2014. The humorous bag, with a smiling face, leather arms and feet, and a silver-colored metal “nose” and “eyes,” brought $18,750. The price included the dust bag and box. Dozens of other used purses sold for more than $10,000 this year. Vintage designer purses are relatively new to auctions.

They probably would not have been offered 20 years ago.

*** Q: I have a porcelain vase with the words “Fraureuth, Made in Germany” on the bottom. It is marked with a crown above a circle. Inside the circle there’s a small letter “c” and a capital letter “F.” Handwritten above the mark is the name “G. Wokaty.” Can you tell me who made the vase and how old it is?

A: Your vase was made by Porcelain Factory Fraureuth, which was in business in Fraureuth, Saxony, Germany, from about 1898 to 1935. It was successor to a porcelain factory that operated on the same site beginning in 1866. The handwritten name is probably the name of the decorator. ***

*** Q: We have a chest of drawers that has been in my family since the 1930s.

It has six drawers with dark burled wood fronts and diamond-shaped pulls with enamel drops. The label on the back says, “Sligh Furniture Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.” Do you have any information?

A: The Sligh Furniture Co. was founded in Grand Rapids in 1880 by Charles R. Sligh. The company was a mainstay of the city’s furniture industry in the early 1900s, when Grand Rapids was considered the “Furniture Capital of the World.” At first Sligh made inexpensive walnut bureaus with mirrors.

Later it manufactured bedroom sets, chiffoniers and wardrobes in many styles. By the mid-1920s, Sligh claimed to be the largest manufacturer of bedroom furniture in the world. The company closed in 1932 but was reopened the next year by Sligh’s son, Charles R. Sligh Jr., in Holland, Mich. The company went on to make grandfather clocks, office furniture and entertainment pieces.

A: Elephant-hair bracelets have been made for more than 1,000 years and are supposed to protect the wearer from harm, ward off sickness and bring good luck. Amelia Earhart wore an elephant-hair bracelet for years, but was not wearing it on her last flight in 1937 when her plane disappeared. Bracelets are made from an elephant’s tail hairs, which can be 2 or 3 feet long. The hairs are trimmed to a uniform thickness and boiled to soften them so they can be molded into shape. Seinfeld’s new venture: Coffee talk

By EMILY YAHR The Washington Post Jerry Seinfeld could have taken his gazillion-dollar “Seinfeld” fortune, gone merrily on his way and never worked again, but he decided two years ago to launch the Web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” on Sony’s Crackle. com.

The show is exactly what it sounds like: Seinfeld in conversation with his funniest celebrity friends, including David Letterman, Tina Fey, Mel Brooks, Louis C.K., Jon Stewart, Aziz Ansari and Sarah Silverman, among others.

The series, which is in its fourth season this summer, has collected more than 40 million views and an Emmy nomination.

How has it done so well? Obviously having the name “Seinfeld” attached doesn’t hurt. But the best explanation is that it’s a talk show without actually being a talk show.

If that sounds like Seinfeld-ian nonsense, well, that’s what it is. Following tradition, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” is basically a show about nothing – except cars and coffee, sort of.

Every Thursday at noon, a new episode (generally about 15 to 20 minutes long) is posted, each kicking off with Seinfeld

asking a famous pal to join him for a cup of joe.

Then they take a ride in a classic car to a coffee shop and talk about everything from comedy to careers to kids to hobbies. It’s essentially eavesdropping as stars chat, so you learn all kinds of fun facts. For example: Jon Stewart has a three-legged dog. Tina Fey doesn’t have a driver’s license. Every night, Mel Brooks goes to Carl Reiner’s house where the two comedy legends eat dinner on TV trays and watch “Jeopardy!”

As it’s always an entertaining peek behind the scenes, the question becomes “When is Seinfeld going to take the show to television?” At this point, we know the drill: First comes the Web show, and if it’s really good, it’s picked up by a network for true stardom. Even in a world where Netflix reigns, we’re still ingrained to think of television as the ultimate platform.

Seinfeld’s answer, however, has always been the same: Never. And that’s probably for the best. Everyone knows that talk shows can have a rough time in the television world. Daytime and late-night TV are littered with failed ventures (“Bethenny,” “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “Totally Biased,” “Katie,” to name a few) for many reasons. Network interference. Hosts and producers

having different visions. The scramble to fill an episode every day or week.

Plus, Seinfeld isn’t a fan of modern-day talk shows, calling them “promotional vehicles for the industry.”

“They’re not talk shows, per se, they’re kind of setup talk shows – ‘I’m gonna ask you this, then you say that,’” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “The shows are pretty cheap, too, so until it becomes an unworkable business model, I don’t think you’ll see change.”

Network executives could promise to stay out of Seinfeld’s way, but the Internet still has much more freedom than broadcast or cable television could offer. With the Web show, there’s no pressure about when an episode needs to run, or for how long. No one gives notes. There are no pre-interviews.

Seinfeld can do whatever he wants, however he wants, and the result is a genuinely fascinating conversation.

The most important point, though, involves the comedians themselves. In front of a studio audience, they don’t open up the way they do in the relaxed atmosphere of Seinfeld’s low-key production.

That, in a nutshell, is why “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” works. And, as Seinfeld has learned through the years, you don’t mess with success.

Son’s football concussion is a serious matter Dear Doctor K: My son got a concussion playing football. His doctor said he shouldn’t play again until his symptoms have completely disappeared. What symptoms should we be looking out for?

Dear Reader: A concussion follows a physical blow or impact to the head that disturbs the way the brain works. While it sometimes causes a person to temporarily lose consciousness, it doesn’t always do that. It also can cause other symptoms that indicate the brain has been injured – and those can become apparent days or weeks after a person who has been knocked out regains consciousness. A concussion is a serious injury, more serious than we used to think.

Most people recover quickly and completely from a concussion.

However, as long as even subtle symptoms of a concussion last, the brain remains especially vulnerable to another injury. As your son’s doctor advised, it is very important that your son not return to playing football, or any contact sport, until he is com-

It’s rare, but repeat concussions can also result in brain swelling, permanent brain damage, even death.

Concussion symptoms can be wide-ranging. As you might expect, a concussion can cause physical symptoms such as headache and dizziness. But a concussion can also cause problems with thinking, sleep and mood.

Some symptoms may appear immediately and go away quickly. Others may not emerge for days or even weeks, and may last for a few months. Look out for the following concussion-related symptoms: Headache; nausea; dizziness; fatigue; blurred vision; difficulty thinking, paying attention,

remembering and learning; depression; irritability; poor sleep; frustration; and poor focus.

There is no specific medicine used to treat a concussion. The best treatment is rest from physical and mental activity. Watch your son closely and contact his doctor if his symptoms get worse or if his behavior changes. Ask the doctor if your son should be excused from gym class or if he needs to limit his activities during recess.

You may need to adjust your child’s schedule and schoolwork as well. As for returning to sports, the timing is different for every child. Symptoms often go away within a couple of weeks, but some children may take months to get better.

Once you believe your son’s symptoms are gone, get his doctor’s OK before you let him back on the gridiron.

That is a good thought to keep in your mind when it seems that you are destined to end a bridge deal with a minus score. Fight on with stubborn fortitude.

In this deal, declarer does not face overwhelming odds, but the thought of being in four hearts with only seven trumps instead of playing in five clubs with nine trumps would daunt some players. This layout arose during a pair event, where scoring the extra points from a major-suit contract can be very profitable.

Against four hearts, West starts with three rounds of spades. How should declarer continue? South’s three-spade cue-bid asked his partner to bid three no-trump with a spade stopper. Yes, five clubs is much easier to make. But if South can bring home four hearts for plus 420, that will beat those declarers in five clubs scoring only plus 400. South apparently has 10 top tricks: four hearts, one diamond and five clubs. But to run the clubs, he must first draw trumps. And the six missing hearts will break 4-2 more often than 3-3 (a priori 48.45 percent versus 35.53 percent). And even if hearts are 3-3, South will always have a diamond loser. So, rather than ruff at trick three, South should discard a diamond.

If West persists with a fourth spade, South ruffs with dummy’s heart ace, draws trumps and claims.
