Parade draws costumed pets in North Aurora

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Gavin and Kelly Kirchner haven’t been North Aurora residents long – only about a year – so they decided to go big for their first pet parade.

Their labradoodle, Anna, was not only the first pet registered for Sunday’s event but also dressed as Princess Anna from “Frozen,” complete with red braided pigtails.

The Kirchners joined their nearly 1-year-old pup in costume. He was dressed as Olaf, the snowman, while she portrayed the reindeer Sven.

“We thought we’d go all out for the first year,” Kelly Kirchner said, noting they moved from Naperville last August.

Now a part of North Aurora Days, the 33rd annual event began in May 1982 as a National Pet Week event to show the value of pets in people’s lives.

More than 50 pets – including cats, reptiles, a turtle, a hamster and many dogs – participated in this year’s parade, which began west of the Fox River at the North Aurora Activity Center parking lot and ended east of the river at the gazebo in Riverfront Park.

by Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic and supported by the North Aurora Lions and the North Aurora Firefighter’s Association.

Returning participants included village resident Pam Feyereisen and her 14-yearold Pembroke corgi, Fiona. The now-retired agility champ donned a sombrero and serape for the occasion,

ST. CHARLES – Student enrollment in St. Charles School District 303 will likely continue to decline during the next decade, according to data presented Monday to school board members.

The data indicates district enrollment for the 2024-25 school year is estimated to fall between 10,000 and 12,000 students.

District enrollment has gone from 13,934 students during the 2009-10 school year to 12,995 in the 2014-15 year, according to actual enrollment figures.

GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously agreed – again – at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting to amend Geneva’s weapons ordinance making it illegal to discharge a firearm in the city limits unless in self-defense.

After more than an hour, aldermen separated a second part of the proposed amendment – which would have made it illegal to discharge an air gun or BB gun – for further refining. The city’s current law allows it, but the pellets cannot leave a person’s property.

Last month, the committee recommended both be approved, but revisited the proposals.

Police Chief Steve Mexin had proposed the amendments, which acknowledge citizens’ right to carry concealed weapons. But with regards to air guns and BB guns, Mexin said many of them look like assault rifles and have greater firepower than BB guns of the past.

Mexin said because of the proximity of homes combined with pellets that can travel 1,200 feet a second, the possibility of property damage or injury is greater.

“They are much more powerful than they used to be,” Mexin said. “Many are sold to look like assault rifles … When officers pull up upon a scene, they can’t tell from a distance and can’t assume it is not a real weapon.”

Second Ward Alderman Don Cummings, who chaired the meeting, read a letter from 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian, who was absent.

Simonian’s letter suggested nail guns also be made illegal, as well as baseball bats, hockey pucks, fishing poles and stones.

Instead, Simonian advocated for letting adults be responsible.

Two residents, Kurt Koenig and Scott Carlson, both advocated for not making air guns and BB guns illegal to shoot within city limits.

“We should not add extra laws when they’re not necessary,” Carlson said. “As it’s written, my son can’t go into the basement and shoot a BB gun.”

City Administrator Mary McKittrick suggested aldermen send suggestions and concerns to Mexin and “maybe together we can come up with something that will address those particular concerns.”

Public meetings will be scheduled this fall at every school in the district, except for St. Charles North and East high schools, to present all four options, Schlomann said.

asloboda@shawmedia.com As students come to St. Charles’ two high schools for materials pickup this week, more will be awaiting them than just their books.

Samples of the new high school lunch menu will be available for tasting, and food service workers will be in attendance for meet-and-greet sessions and to answer questions about nutritional information.

Lisa Dandre, an assistant principal at St. Charles East High School, likened it to a restaurant’s grand opening.

“We’re ready for more people to buy,” she said.

This year, the high school menus in St. Charles and Batavia won’t be governed by federal regulations, as both districts decided to withdraw those schools from the National School Lunch Program.

Geneva School District 304 also does not participate in the program, which provides low-cost or free lunches to children.

Lindsay Jannotta, the assistant director for finance at Batavia School District 101, wrote in an email that the change will result in more dining options.

“There will be new à la carte menu items added in addition to having new food station concepts to explore,” she wrote. “These stations could include a made-to-order deli station, as well as a ‘picante’ concept similar to a madeto-order Mexican fast-food restaurant.”

The districts are giving up federal funds by opting out of the national program. In St. Charles School District 303, for example, it’s a loss of about $500,000, said Seth Chapman, assistant superintendent of business services.

Services, which works with Batavia – understands some might think such a move is a disservice to taxpayers.

But, he said, they don’t understand the full picture, which includes districts’ payments to food service providers and program participation among students. Districts such as Batavia and St. Charles have a small enough free- and reduced-lunch pop-

ulation that leaving the program makes sense, he said.

For a school with a higher percentage, he said, “It makes no sense to give up that subsidy whatsoever.”

Staff at both St. Charles and Batavia said dropping the program was motivated by declining sales under the new, strict guidelines implemented last year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Chapman said

District 303 lost $55,000 last year in à la carte sales.

“You have to have sales from paying customers to sustain the program,” he said.

Although Districts 303 and 101 no longer will receive the federal reimbursements at the high schools, Chapman and Jannotta indicated the districts will get a commission from their food service providers – Aramark and Quest, respectively – for high school food sales.

“By taking Batavia High School off the National School Lunch Program, we anticipate that sales will increase as there will be less restrictions on what can be sold,” Jannotta wrote. “We anticipate no decrease in our estimated return, and expect that our return will grow over the next few years.”

She noted the program is remaining at the middle and elementary schools partly because free- and reduced-meals

Despite great intentions, the federal nutritional regulations for the National School Lunch Program are flawed, Chapman said.

For example, he said, the high schools couldn’t offer a salad bar because the nutritional components couldn’t be controlled. And, he said, the program resulted in “a lot of waste” because reimbursable meals required students taking fruits and vegetables. Dandre said it’s not that students don’t want those items, “They just want to have a choice,” she said.

Saccaro, whose company works with about a dozen Chicago-area high schools not in the national lunch program, said a common concern is such schools will feed students “nothing but garbage.”

He said districts can help shape the menu and create healthy programs.

“It doesn’t have to turn into cookies, fries and chips all day long,” Saccaro said.

The St. Charles high schools sought student input about the cafeteria menus as it prepared to move off the national lunch program, and it will continue to seek feedback as the teens try the new offerings, staff said.

According to a district newsletter, choices at East and North will include pizza, pastas, salads, burritos, burgers, chicken sandwiches, fajitas, flatbread melts, yogurt parfaits and fruit cups.

At East, staff said, physical changes were made to improve the flow in the cafeteria with the goal of further encouraging more students to buy. “[We] all have a stake in this,” Chapman said.

By Gina Kraman They range in price from $2 to $50, but can cost you up to $3,500. Chemical sealants to plug leaks in a car’s air-conditioning system are available, but some experts don’t recommend them, as they can cause damage, resulting in costly repairs.

Seith Swanson, manager and master mechanic, Geneva Repair Shop, Batavia, explains how he needed to replace a total A/C system in a customer’s luxury car for $3,500 that was clogged from misused sealant.

“Sealant cans are pressurized, and can exert up to 500 pounds per square inch of pressure. People can do more damage to their cars, or even hurt themselves, with chemical products they’re not experienced with using,” Swanson says.

He explains that a car’s air conditioner shares the same basic components as a home A/C unit and refrigerator. “They all have a condenser, evaporator, and compressor. The compressor pumps refrigerant under

high pressure to the condenser.

The goal is to cool the air and remove humidity or moisture.”

Swanson adds, “For a car, you can see the expelled moisture by the telltale watery puddles under your car after the A/C has been running. Many people also use their car’s A/C in the winter, to remove the condensation, which is moisture, collecting on the windshield.”

Swanson explains that a car’s air condition has to work in an extremely hot environment, as the engine and radiator can each reach 220-degrees F. When the engine is cool, Swanson advises drivers to periodically check under their car hoods to remove any debris, such as leaves, which can impede airflow. Changing the cabin air filter every 10,000 miles also supports A/C performance.

While air conditioning was once considered an automotive luxury option, it’s now equipped in 99 percent of new cars, according to 2010 figures. The Packard Company invented car air conditioning in 1939. By 1969, more than half of all new cars were sold with air conditioning, reports PopularMechanic.com.

BATAVIA – Batavia resident Peter Kasper knows he gets his fair share of looks as he pedals his solar-powered bikecar hybrid to Fermilab, where he is a scientist.

“It seemed like the perfect commuting solution,” said Kasper, in talking about his three-wheeled vehicle, called the ELF. He lives near Fermilab.

Kasper’s vehicle was part of the alternative transportation show at Saturday’s Green Fair on the Fox. Batavia MainStreet partnered with the Batavia Park District, the city of Batavia and the Batavia Environmental Commission to present the festival.

Carolyn Burnham, who chairs Green Fair on the Fox, said the event was designed to be a fun way for people to learn about sustainable living, healthy living and physical fitness.

Kasper said the ELF is classified as a bicycle and is designed for use less than 30 mph. Because it also has a rechargeable battery, he doesn’t have to pedal all the time.

“I only pedal if I am in a hurry,” Kasper said.

Debbie Morano of Aurora brought her 2013 Nissan Leaf electric car to the alternative transportation show. The car is fully electric, she said.

“The only fluid in the car is windshield wiper fluid,” said Morano, co-owner of Morano’s Pizza in Geneva. “There is nothing to break down in it.”

Morano said she bought the car because she wanted to do her part in helping the environment.

Shelley Peterson of Batavia and her 5-year-old son, Finley, decided to participate in a free Zumba class given by Batavia Park District instructor Tom Lafser. Peterson’s mom, Laura Peterson, also was participating.

“She is doing better than I am,” Shelley Peterson said with a laugh, as she took a break while her mother kept going.

to stay active.

“I love to dance,” she said. “I love the rhythm.”

Representatives from Green Tomato Grocery provided information at the event about its efforts to create a cooperative grocery store that would focus on providing natural and organic food that is locally produced.

“A cooperative helps keep money in the community,” said Jason Bell, vice president of the board of directors for Green Tomato Grocery.

A St. Charles man, who is the former president of a Chicago-area construction company, was indicted in a $1.9 million fraud scheme, according to a news release.

Yashvant C. Patel, 59, was charged with four counts of mail fraud and four counts of making false statements in documents required as part of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, the release stated.

Patel was arrested Friday morning, according to the release.

While serving as president of My Baps Construction Corp., Patel paid less-thanunion-scale wages to dozens of employees, including undocumented workers, in order to reduce the employer contributions to the benefit funds of the Construction and General Laborers’ District Council of Chicago and Vicinity, according to the indictment.

Patel falsely reported My Baps and a sister company, Vijay Construction Corp., owed about $600,000 less to the benefit funds and about $1.3 million less to the companies’ employees than what was required by collective-bargaining agreements with the union, the indictment states.

The indictment seeks forfeiture from Patel of $1.9 million, according to the release.

From January 2009 through October 2010, Patel controlled the daily opera-

tions and finances of My Baps and Vijay, both of which operated as concrete and asphalt contractors while sharing a principal place of business at 7601 S. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago, the indictment states.

Patel had authority over the bank accounts of the two companies, and he approved expenditures to outside entities, including monthly payments to the benefit funds, according to the indictment.

The benefit funds, in turn, provided union members with pension, health and training benefits. Pursuant to collective bargaining agreements, My Baps and Vijay were required to pay its employees certain wages, and to provide the benefit funds with monthly remittance reports identifying the hours worked and the total contribution due for each covered employee, according to the indictment.

The indictment charges Patel under reported about 33,000 hours of work performed by his employees, some of whom were not lawfully entitled to work in the United States, resulting in purportedly lower employer contributions into the union’s benefit funds.

Patel paid many of these workers under the table, at wages that were less than what was required by the collective-bargaining agreements, the indictment states.

The government is represented in the case by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher McFadden.

Floyd E. Braddy Sr., age 94, of St. Charles passed away Saturday, August 8, 2015, at Pine View Care Center, St. Charles.

He was born April 27, 1921, the son of Arthur and Ruth Braddy in Mt. Vernon, IL. Floyd was united in marriage to Lorena “Sally” Arnold on February 3, 1945. He grew up on his family farm in Mt. Vernon.

He served in the US Army Air Corps in Alaska during WWII, and moved to the St. Charles and Geneva area where he raised his family.

He worked in the Automatics Department of Burgess Norton in Geneva for 42 years. After his retirement he spent 16 summers guiding fishermen in Kodiak, Alaska with his brother-in-law Asa. He was also a founding member of the Kane Kounty Kar Klub and restored his model A Fords. He enjoyed traveling around the world especially his trip to Africa.

He is survived by his son, Floyd “Butch” (Linda) Braddy. The love of his life Granddaughter, Susan (Larry) Braddy-Sahr, and his “My Only Sunshines” Great Grandchildren, Allison, Abbigail, and Anderson.

Also several Brothers and Sisters -in- Laws.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally. Also his parents, Arthur and Ruth Braddy; Brothers and Sister in laws, Lloyd (Phyllis) and Eddie (Ethel) Braddy; and in laws Vera and Izola Arnold.

The estate of the late political activist Jack Roeser is suing to recover a $200,000 loan made to Batavia-based Larson-Becker Co. Roeser, who died in June 2014, was a conservative political activist who founded the Family Taxpayers Foundation. Roeser was chairman and founder of Otto Engineering Inc. in Carpentersville.

First American Bank, the executor of Roeser’s estate, on Aug. 5 filed the suit against

Larson-Becker. Roeser made the loan to Larson-Becker Co. in February 2011. The suit seeks $210,782 – which includes interest from Oct. 30, 2014 to July 29, 2015 – along with additional interest of $38.35 each day as it accrues until there is a judgment.

According to the suit, Larson-Becker has refused to pay back the loan.

A license to be a florist?

How occupational rules can be a burden on workers THE WASHINGTON POST It’s not every day that references to Adam Smith and Milton Friedman show up in the footnotes of a Democratic White House report. But a new white paper from President Barack Obama’s economic team on the job-killing, anti-consumer effect of unduly burdensome state occupational licensing is that rarest of government intellectual products: one that actually transcends ideological categories, casting fresh light on a long-standing problem and proposing pragmatic solutions to it.

To be sure, the report’s authors stand on the shoulders of not only Smith and Friedman but also researchers at think tanks ranging from the libertarian Institute for Justice to the liberal Brookings Institution, who have previously documented the often contradictory and unjustifiable rules that require, say, scrap metal recyclers to get a license in one state but not in another – or oblige aspiring members of the same licensed trade to pay wildly varying fees and spend wildly varying amounts of time studying depending on where they live.

A startling one-quarter of all U.S. workers need a license to do their jobs, according to the White House report, a five-fold increase since the 1950s. Among those most affected by this situation are military families who move frequently from state to state, only to find that a non-military spouse can no longer work without spending months qualifying for a new license.

Licensing also inhibits many ex-offenders from rejoining the workforce because they lack the requisite clean police record.

Overall, unlicensed workers earn 10 percent to 15 percent less than similarly skilled licensed workers, and licensing laws raise consumer prices, with no discernible increase in the general quality of goods and services, according to research summarized in the report. Licensing is sometimes necessary to protect public safety and health – for truck drivers and doctors, for example. In many instances, however, licensing laws reflect the protectionist instincts of particular industries or professions, such as the funeral-attendant licenses that nine states require or the florist licenses that only Louisiana unaccountably demands. Things aren’t as bad in the states as they are in Greece, where almost the only way to get a pharmacist license is to buy one from a retiring pharmacist, but you can see the regulatory havoc that can result when special interests get control of the political process.

Significantly, the White House report notes that two-thirds of the growth in licensing over the past half-century is traceable not to the changing composition of the workforce but to proliferating state laws.

The report counsels elimination of licenses not clearly necessary for health or safety, based on a rigorous cost-benefit analysis, and a reduction in how much time and money it costs to obtain those that remain. States should do much more to recognize one another’s licenses and should rely on mandatory bonding, or insurance, rather than licensing as a means of consumer protection. Obama’s fiscal budget would spend $15 million on a federal program to gather definitive information on barriers to employment caused by licensing. Given the potential efficiency gains, it would be money well spent.

After No Child Left Behind, states were left with federal standards to improve and assess their unique school systems. More than 40 states, including Illinois, said they could do it better, and the U.S. Department of Education let them try. The administration gave state educational agencies the flexibility to request waivers for 10 provisions of the law and implement plans to improve outcomes for their students and teachers.

The federal government overreached when it came to our children’s education, and states were rightfully granted a way out. Why not when it comes to our health insurance?

I recently introduced the State Health Care Options Act to bring parity to the federal government’s position on state innovation in education and health insurance. While the

Affordable Care Act includes a waiver option, in my opinion the administration made it functionally impossible for states to get one. My bill would simplify and streamline the law’s waiver requirements and allow states to opt out of the ACA’s essential health benefits requirements and exchange provisions, while maintaining coverage for preexisting health conditions and for young people under the age of 26. The State Health Care Options Act is the first step out of the ACA, a law that is threatening Illinoisans with a possible 30 percent increase in health insurance premiums next year and a loss of already-limited options as the

market becomes even more consolidated.

My bill would give states like Illinois the freedom to try something different, to foster a less regulated insurance market through more effective use of technology and data analysis. These waivers will offer states and their unique populations more choices and lead to lower premium prices.

States have independently produced and tested successful approaches to countless national challenges, like education.

Health care should be no different.

Excitement abounds as ‘official’ season begins

High school football teams were officially allowed to begin practicing Monday, and the excitement level has never been higher.

The mandatory 10-day break after the end of camp not only rested players’ bodies from the summer grind, but also added to the level of anticipation to get the season underway.

“It’s definitely an exciting day,” St. Charles North defensive back Jake Spaniol said.

“The break was necessary and helped a lot, but it only amped up the excitement. I don’t even know how long we have been working this offseason, but this is it. Today is really exciting.”

North, along with Batavia and a few other teams, held a season-opening practice Monday afternoon, when storms forced teams to move workouts inside.

But those games were eventually finished and the season went on, as did Monday’s practices. The excitement wasn’t just fueled by a long offseason, but, for some, disappointing endings to last season.

Batavia fell in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to perennial contender Mount. Carmel, 21-16, leaving team leaders such as Canaan Coffey to ponder the loss for much of the offseason.

“Last season kind of ended a little short for us,” said Coffey, a senior wide receiver.

“It was disappointing, but it made us that much more ea-

ger to get back out there. We have been working so hard this offseason with everything and we can’t wait to get out there.”

Not many teams expected to be perfect at this point, but all had the excitement to get right to work after 10 days apart.

“Nothing but football,” Geneva senior wide receiver/ defensive back Donny Friedel said. “All game time out here.”

Coach Bryce Farquhar and his staff at St. Charles East were intense for most of their three-hour morning practice in the heat. The Saints are eager to prepare for their Aug. 29 season opener at South Elgin.

“We need to make sure everyone knows what their job is,” Saints running back Cam Canales said. “That’s the biggest thing. Just keeping up with studying and working on all the things that coach has put in. So putting everything from summer into action is what these first few days are about.”

“Tunnel vision right now,” East linebacker Jack Russell added. “Everyone’s on the same page. Coming out here every day with tunnel vision and working towards that first game. We really have to hunker down and finish off these three weeks of practice if we want a win.”

But this day wasn’t just exciting for the players, but also coaches.

Even though most were able to escape from the game during the break, and in Farquhar’s case, welcome a new addition to his family, it didn’t mean that coaches were any less excited than the players to get things going.

Monday was the first real chance for coaches to see how their summer camps and workouts have affected the program, hopefully for the better.

“The first day of the official season is always super exciting,” North coach Rob Pomazak said. “We have talked about how the summer is a progression. The summer is at one level and the season

is at a completely different level. As a coach during that break, you miss the kids and they realize they miss the game, too, so they come in with a new excitement.

“We practice four times more than we play games, so practice is everything for us.”

It truly is to the North Stars, who have that as the team’s 2015 motto: “Practice is Everything.”

Although many teams zeroed in on their season opening opponents on Monday, the next three weeks can only be so much about the opposition.

Trying to perfect their schemes and what they can do to affect the outcome of games also is at a premium for players.

“It’s funny. It really puts things into perspective how close it is,” Batavia linebacker Colin Thurston said.

“Talking to the younger guys and saying, ‘You know, it all goes by very quickly. It’s almost here.’ I remember the first snap of the season last year and it’s just like, ‘Wow’.”

Brighten the mood: The first day of fall practice is but one preseason benchmark for athletes.

At Batavia, the Bulldogs are especially enthused for the Monday practice before the team’s Aug. 28 season opener at Oswego.

“A cool thing we have is an under the lights practice.

So it’s the Monday before our first game and that’s probably my favorite part,” senior linebacker Colin Thurston said.

“We go before the game, we sit in the stands and the coaches talk to us with the lights on the field. You look out and, even though our first game isn’t at home this season, it just makes you realize how soon the games are coming. It will be better here once we get our pads on and start hitting, but it’s still pretty cool to think about at this point.”

Looking to rebound: Despite limiting opponents to 158 points in 2014, tops in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East,

Kaneland scored just 270 points, the lowest figure in the five-team conference.

The Knights, who entered the fall with four successive seasons of at least 400 points, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2007, Fedderly’s first season at the helm after a lengthy tenure as an assistant.

We have contact: The IHSA in June installed a limit on contact drills during practice, which includes allowing three days of live full contact per week totaling no more than 90 minutes. That stipulation takes effect on Aug. 24. In the interim period, only one practice per day may include live full contact if a team is working out twice in a single day. A majority of coaches favor the safety measures.

“Through experience, I found out why take the risk?”

Wicinski said. “I think 80 percent of concussions happen in practice, where around 20 percent of them are in games.

GENEVA – Rob Wicinski deadpanned about his veteran sideline status a few hours into the first practice of his 17th season as Geneva football coach.

Moments later, Wicinski turned more serious as he addressed the novelty he undoubtedly finds at the start of each campaign.

“We were just talking now, we’re trying to do some depth charts and some special teams stuff, and we’re already like, ‘Hey, that kid came in shape, came in with the right attitude,’” Wicinski said. “So there’s some surprises. And sometimes in the summer, you don’t see guys as much as you’d like to. And they always seem to show up in August. So yeah, there’s always some nice surprises, that kind of thing.”

Wicinski holds an six-season edge on Marmion counterpart Dan Thorpe for the rank of dean of Chronicle Country coaches, with ninth-year Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly coming next.

Over time, he’s successfully sandwiched light-heartedness in with an admittedly oldschool approach that long has put a premium on the running game.

To that end, Wicinski might have been one of the few coaches statewide bemoaning how a certain offensive position is bordering on extinction, at least in Vikings camp.

“That fullback is lost in the program,” he said. “I don’t have that fullback yet. I’ve talked to several other coaches, not even in the area but other states and this kind of stuff, and they’re like, ‘Yeah, it seems to be now these teams are all spread.’ It’s like we stopped breeding them, you know, that fullback-linebacker, that 180-pound kid that’s 5-11. It just seems like they’re going by the wayside.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North’s Zach Mettetal had people paying attention to him last baseball season, especially with his defense at shortstop.

After playing a tournament in Georgia for his Elite Baseball travel team, Memphis took notice to the junior, who accepted the Tigers’ NCAA Division I scholarship offer on Sunday.

Mettetal committed a week after his twin brother, Tyler, decided to play college baseball at South Carolina.

“I loved everything about the school,” Zach Mettetal said.

“The coaches made me feel welcomed and special and the style in which they play fit me perfectly. I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity.”

Mettetal said he also was in talks with Michigan State, but when he received the Memphis offer, it was a no-brainer.

“It’s awesome to commit,” Zach Mettetal said. “Now I can just go play and have fun. I don’t have to worry about who may be in the stands watching.

I can just play.”

Cougars set for stretch run

GENEVA – Monday marked a league-wide off day in the Midwest League, meaning the Cougars could neither gain nor lose ground from their two-game lead in the Western Division’s second-half playoff race.

The Cougars enter today’s series opener against Great Lakes with a 31-12 record in the second half, two games ahead of Quad Cities and three better than Peoria.

The Cougars, in their first season as a Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, have 27 regular season games remaining, including 15 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The club went 3-3 on last week’s road trip to South Bend and West Michigan, which concluded with Sunday’s 6-3 loss to the Whitecaps.

think I got that. I lost to someone who made an incredible shot, so it’s hard to be mad about that.”

But it wasn’t just Armstrong’s heroic save on No. 18 when the match looked all but over, or the near miss of the water hazard before chipping in the winning shot, it was also the way he did it.

SUGAR GROVE – Dawson Armstrong saw his ball fly into the bunker, short of the green, on the second extra hole of championship match play at the 113th Western Amateur final Saturday at Rich Harvest Farms.

His competitor, Aaron Wise, was on the green. After talking with his caddy and father, Dale, Armstrong stepped into the bunker and lined up his shot.

“We talked walking up there and my dad said, ‘You have had some great shots today, but none have gone in,’” Dawson Armstrong said.

Armstrong’s chip from the bunker bounced twice, tapped the flag stick and found the bottom of the hole for an eagle.

It ended up being his final shot of the day to win the championship, 1 up after 20 holes.

The first person he saw was his dad and, after a scream of excitement, the two embraced in a hug that neither will forget.

“It doesn’t get any better than that,” Dale Armstrong said. “I mean, what an incredible shot. You hate to see that match end, the way they both were playing, but it was awesome.”

“Probably the best shot I have ever hit, in that moment,” Dawson Armstrong said. “To have my dad be the first person I see, after making a shot like that, is something I’ll never forget.”

Armstrong, a sophomore at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, completed a long, grueling weeklong run that saw him play more than 140 holes of golf. His father guessed that the two had logged nearly 45 miles while walking the course.

But Armstrong, 19, talked of how many people were unaware of who he was entering the tournament, but started to develop talk around RHF after his semifinal victory over stroke play medalist Robby Shelton, an Alabama standout.

Shelton entered the Western Am as the No. 6-ranked Amateur in the world, accord-

cool, calm and collected attitude were present for most of the final round.

“I looked at my dad a few times and was just like, ‘How much fun is it?’” Dawson Armstrong said. “I mean, it was a great time. I came here with one goal and that was to have a great time.”

The end result might have been a surprise and unreal feeling for both father and son, but did it surprise Dale Armstrong that his son had a blast and was able to smile in pressure situations? Not a chance.

“That’s him. That’s who he is,” Dale Armstrong said. “He knows it’s all about a process.

Not to worry about the result and go through your own process. He came here saying have fun and I’ll golf well, not golf well and then I’ll have fun.

He has really learned that.”

But the fatigue factor set in much earlier than the 20th hole of the final match. From the minute he finished the first hole with Wise, Armstrong said his stomach began to cramp. It wasn’t until his last shot of the day went in until the pain went away. Even before the stomach pain, Armstrong joked that putting his shoes on before the morning match against Shelton was a task in itself.

“I’ll tell you what, I thought how am I going to do this today,” Dawson Armstrong said.

“Thirty-six holes three days in a row has been crazy. It’s a lot of golf and it will wear you out.”

With not only his family there, but friends from his hometown of Brentwood, Tennessee, in the crowd, Armstrong knows this could only be the start of something special for his golf career.

Staffordshire potters in 19th-century England liked to depict humorous people in everyday activities. The figurines were the only way to see what a brave lion tamer or important political figure looked like. There were no photos and few prints. Sometimes the antique pieces confuse today’s historians because the activities are unfamiliar. A large toby jug with a removable hat-shaped lid seems to be picking his nose. A strange subject for a piece of pottery to use at home! But study reveals he is sniffing his pinch of snuff in the days before cigarettes.

Snuff is ground or pulverized tobacco leaves. The habit started in Brazil and America, moved on to Spain, and was popular in Europe by the 17th century.

Snuff was put on the back of the hand, then pinched by the thumb and finger and held near the nose to be inhaled into each nostril to get a nicotine “hit.”

It is often made with a scent, medical additions, or flavored with spices, fruit and flowers. There is even snuff made with herbs, but no tobacco.

Today, snuff often is taken by mouth, not the nose. Collectors like the snuff boxes popular in the 19th century. They are small and the lid makes a tight seal to keep the day’s supply of snuff dry. Examples in gold, silver, porcelain, glass and even horn are collected. There are also large snuff “mulls” used to store snuff. The most unusual are large rams’ horns decorated with silver. *** Q: I’d like to know the value of a 1918 Norman Rockwell poster I have.

A: Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877. The first Edison Home phonograph was made from 1896 to 1901. Your Model A Home phonograph is sometimes called the “Suitcase” model because it can be carried like a suitcase. Early wax cylinders held 2 minutes of recording.

Later, 4-minute cylinders were made.

has recently lost more than 100 pounds running and doing yoga. She looks fantastic. Yoga is the focus of her life now, and she posts daily photos of herself on social media. In many of them she is scantily clad and in poses some might consider risque.

Whenever she attends family gatherings or outings to public places, she wants to take pictures of herself in various poses. This makes some of the people she’s with uncomfortable. She says she doesn’t care what others think, but there have been quite a few negative comments about this, and people have “unfollowed” her on social media. Others think it’s OK for her to do her thing.

I feel that when kids move out, they should take all their belongings.

Kelly thinks I should keep the 10 to 15 trophies she won in

I’d like to turn her bedroom into a guest room where visiting relatives can stay, but I’m having difficulty getting my daughter to take all her stuff.

Removal of inflamed appendix protects against it bursting Dear Doctor K: Why do doctors remove the appendix when someone has appendicitis? Don’t we need this organ?

Dear Reader: Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix.

This small, fingerlike tube hangs from the lower right side of the large intestine. It usually becomes inflamed because of an infection or blockage. The condition is quite common; it affects one in every 500 people in the United States each year. (I’ve put an illustration of an inflamed appendix on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

An appendicitis attack usually begins with abdominal pain that starts just above the navel and moves to the lower right side of the abdomen. Many people also experience loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and low-grade fever.

Other symptoms can include abdominal swelling, pain when the right side of the abdomen is touched and inability to pass gas.

Once a person is diagnosed with appendicitis (or even strongly suspected of having it), prompt surgery usually is performed.

Surgical removal of the appendix is called “appendectomy,” and it has been the go-to treatment for appendicitis since the late 1800s.

It is the most common reason for emergency abdominal surgery in the U.S. That’s true in children as

In the 1990s, surgeons began to perform the procedure with an instrument called a laparoscope.

This is a flexible tube with a light, video camera, and cutting instruments at the end of it. The instrument allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen, find the inflamed appendix, cut it free and pull it out of the body.

Removing the appendix with a laparoscope allows for several smaller cuts in the wall of the abdomen. This contrasts with the traditional surgical approach, which involves one large incision.

Laparoscopic surgery has led to fewer complications, and the average hospital stay is shorter and recovery is quicker compared to traditional surgery.

Why is appendectomy so widely used? For one thing, if untreated, an infected appendix can burst. A potentially deadly infection can spread throughout the abdomen and into the bloodstream, requiring complicated emergency surgery. Prompt removal of the appendix before it bursts helps avoid this dangerous

situation.

Also, we don’t know what the appendix does – or if it does anything at all. Removing it has no negative effects on a person’s health. In fact, sometimes when surgeons have to perform abdominal surgery for other reasons (like an inflamed gallbladder), they remove a healthy appendix while they’re at it. That eliminates the possibility of appendicitis developing in the future.

Everyone who has surgery also receives antibiotics. These drugs treat the infection within the appendix, and they reduce the risk of widespread infection if the appendix has already burst as the surgeons are preparing to operate.

In Europe, there is a trend of treating some cases of appendicitis just with antibiotics, not surgery, and then closely observing the patient. Appendectomy is performed only if needed.

In the U.S., this strategy is followed when the patient is too ill undergo surgery. But it hasn’t yet been widely adopted in more routine cases of appendicitis.

Dr. Wallace: I’m the oldest of three daughters in my family. I have always been a good student and citizen, and a good daughter to my mom who is divorced and raising us on her own. My two younger sisters keep calling me “Mama’s girl” and it is very annoying to me. I’m sure they are jealous of me because I have earned excellent grades in school and have plans to attend the University of West Virginia when I graduate. They do only what’s necessary to get by at school and they don’t seem to have the desire or the grades to attend college.

However, this week we are looking at the useful New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor – one of a major – one no-trump, if responder rebids two of the unbid minor, it is artificial, guaranteeing at least game-invitational values and asking opener for more information.

The first priority for opener is to show three-card support for responder’s major. If he cannot do that, he indicates four cards in the unbid major – as in this deal.

West leads the diamond queen against four hearts. How should South plan the play?

If South had bid two spades over two diamonds, North would have continued with three hearts, natural and game-forcing, in case South also held four hearts. Usually a 4-4 fit is better than a 5-3.

South has one loser in each suit.

He must eliminate his diamond loser immediately, discarding it on a club winner in his own hand.

Also, as declarer is establishing his club suit, he needs a fast hand entry, which is the diamond king.

So, South must win the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace and play a club.

West takes the trick and leads another diamond, but declarer wins in his hand, discards dummy’s last diamond on a high club, and plays on trumps.
