Holmstad plans annual bazaar BATAVIA – The 37th Holmstad Bazaar, sponsored by the Batavia retirement community’s residents association, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 in the facility’s Town Center, on the southwest corner of Route 31 and Fabyan Parkway.

Among the items for sale are homemade baked goods, books, jewelry, art, crafts, plants, cards and items found at the flea market-style This ’n’ That shop.

Profits go to meet community needs through the residents association.

Batavia Green Fair provides tips for healthy, safe living Green Fair on the Fox held Saturday in downtown Batavia

by Just Food Initiative’s booth on Saturday at the Green Fair on the Fox learned about the dangers of corn syrup.

“It’s a substitute for nutrition,” said Shar Johnson-Dunlop, a board member for the Batavia-based Just Food Initiative.

“It is used to put taste in food that doesn’t have taste. It’s a substitute for getting real food.”

Just Food Initiative was just one of the groups represented at the Green Fair, designed to raise awareness about sustainable living, physical fitness and healthy living. The event – put on Batavia MainStreet, the Batavia Park District, city of Batavia and the Batavia Environmental Commission – previously was known as Batavia Green Walk.

The nonprofit group, formed in 2009, tries to educate consumers on how they can make healthier food choices, such as growing one’s one own food and avoiding genetically modified food.

“We are trying to restore quality and equality to the food system,” said Christine Stevens, executive director of Just Food Initiative.

Information about the proposed Green Tomato Grocery also was passed out during The Green Fair. Plans are to create a cooperative grocery store in Batavia that would focus on providing whole, organic food that is locally produced.

Elmhurst couple Todd and Cathy Adams were also at the Green Fair talking about their Zen Parenting Radio station.

Elgin Community College hosts Project Backpack to aid families in need

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Vera Milwee of Carpentersville said there was already a large crowd Saturday on the Elgin Community College campus when she arrived there at 6 a.m.

Milwee, her daughter and her granddaughter, both of Hanover Park, filed into a line that snaked around the side of the college’s Spartan Events Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, to a bus stop. When they emerged from the building about 4.5 hours later, they had four backpacks, one each for the granddaughter and three grandsons.

“It’s a very good cause,” Milwee said. “I wish more communities would do something like this.”

Milwee’s family took four of the 2,800 backpacks donated for Project Backpack, which is an initiative to distribute school supplies to local families on a first-come, firstserved basis. The first family

arrived at 8:15 p.m. on Friday but the center did not open until 9 a.m. Saturday, said Katie Storey, the college’s Student Life Coordinator and leader of Project Backpack.

The event on Saturday helped hundreds of families within Elgin Community College District 509 boundaries, which includes a part of St. Charles School District 303.

Families were required at the event to provide proof of residency or school enrollment within the college’s boundaries.

The program, in its fifth year, continues to serve an increasing number of families, Storey said. School district homeless liaisons told her on Saturday that there are about

1,000 homeless students in District U-46 and about 300 in District 300. There are about 40,000 students total in those districts who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, Storey said.

About 75 volunteers on Thursday helped fill the backpacks with supplies, and more than 100 volunteers on Saturday were on hand to assist during the actual event, including brothers Taylor and Bryan Lantz, both 23, of Elgin.

The Lantzes hauled piles of backpacks onto tables so families could pick them up as they entered one of the center’s rooms. The brothers said they understand why so many families come to Project Backpack because they had to wait

in line at similar distribution events when they were younger.

“We were here to take advantage of them; now there’s no reason not to give back,” Taylor Lantz said.

Bryan Lantz agreed with his brother and said the smiles on students’ faces when they get their backpacks are priceless.

Storey said the event is about more than just backpacks. One of the center’s gyms was host to 24 separate agencies ready to talk to families and hand out materials, including a bag of lunch and dinner goods from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Diana Hernandez of Streamwood was not aware there was going to be so many different groups at the event. She picked up information from Administer Justice, a nonprofit charitable legal aid organization, and her three siblings picked up backpacks with supplies.

This was the first time the Hernandez family participated in Project Backpack. Hernandez said this is what her family needed because her father was recently laid off from his construction job and they are struggling to pay bills.

“This is a really great program to get the basic materials they need,” she said.

Tougher Bob Leonard River Run races on

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Changes that made the races more challenging in Saturday’s Eight Annual Bob Leonard River Run and Walk did not deter runners from competing in the events.

The 5K course was changed to make it more difficult and a 10K race was added. Race officials had to close walk up registration for the two running events because they ran out of racing bibs and timing chips.

“Today we had so many walk-ins that we ran out of bibs,” said Julie Farris, president of CMF Events, the company that managed the races.

“Based on the bibs and based on the amount of the attendees, this was the largest event to date that the Bob Leonard Riv-

er Run and Walk has done.”

Ninety-three chipped runners competed in the 10K and 157 ran in the 5K. Runners agreed that the 10K course, which started in Pottawatomie Park, crossed the Fox River and winded its way to Randall Road before returning to the park, was taxing.

“I would say the switches they put in there about mile four [was the hardest part of the course],” 10K male winner Matt Sagan said. “It was up and down and a big hill right in the middle. It was a pain.”

Sagan, a senior on the Riverside-Brookfield High School cross country team, finished with a time of 37:53.05. His younger brother, Jack, took third, crossing the finish line in 39:55.85.

“This [race] is more for me

and my brother. This is like our preseason training,” said the older Sagan. “Our season starts on Wednesday.”

Farris said most of the 5K course remained the same as in the past.

“We changed it a little bit in sections with stairs and making it a little more difficult,” Farris said. “The 10K was an expansion of the 5K run – a little more rugged, a little more challenging.”

“I was expecting to run on road and pavement so that was demanding,” said David Phelps, a St. Charles resident who took fifth place in the 10K male division and first in the 40-49 male category. “Running in the grass and the switchback in the hills, I wasn’t expecting that this year.”

ern Illinois University dance student Jessica Lewis said she was surprised at all the hills.

“It was very challenging because I expected a very flat track,” said Lewis, who came in third in the 20-29 female group in the 10K. Rounding out the top three male 10K winners was Matt Baker (38:15.32) from Polo.

Oswego resident Stephanie Johnson finished first in the female 10K division. She completed the circuit in 40:06.78.

Sue Russell of DeKalb took second (45:14.22) and Bartlett’s Grace Churney finished third (46:48.99).

Stephanie Howe, 13, of Geneva took top honors in the female division of the 5K race with a time of 20:01.13.

Howe, who will be an eighth-grader this fall, did not

like the addition of stairs to the course.

“It’s kind of hard to go up and down and do it fast,” she said.

Emily Belanger, also of Geneva, took second in the 5K female division (22:24.44). Beth Daniel, from Tullahoma, Tennessee, came in third (22:44.59).

Top 5K honors in the male division went to Matt Rolain of Rochester, Michigan (17:43.31); James Myal of St. Charles (19:37.60) and Dan Roder of Elgin (20:05.83).

The event is named in honor of the late Bob Leonard, a St. Charles resident who was instrumental in starting the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles. The organization’s goals are to enhance, protect and beautify the Fox River in St. Charles.

An added wrinkle equipment managers have faced over the years is the number of uniforms teams have. Instead of having to worry about home and away gear, this year’s Huskies have five uniforms – the red home, road white, alternate black, “Dark Dog,” and the Cornfest uniforms that

were unveiled last week.

“It has absolutely blown up. It’s amazing,” Valentine said. “I think back when I was at other schools like Tulane, we had green pants and white pants, a white jersey and a green jersey and a white helmet.”

When practice begins, he’s following NIU coach Rod Carey around, supervising his two assistants and 12 students who help him out.

Valentine, who was the assistant equipment manager at Arizona before arriving at NIU, had only four students helping him when he arrived, but ended up getting the added help after putting word out on Twitter and Facebook.

“I have great students,” he said. “I put all the faith and trust in them in the world.”

When practice ends, it’s back to the equipment room to take care of any problems players might have, doing pa-

perwork, ordering any equipment that needs to be ordered.

He usually is out of the building around 9:30 or 10 p.m.

The Huskies will host Presbyterian in less than a month, in what Valentine calls an easy day.

“When the player runs out of the tunnel, when they’re out on the field, from head to toe I just make sure that they have everything that they need,” Valentine said. “We, can’t say I, we make sure they have everything that they need.”

DeKALB – When he’s preparing for a Northern Illinois football game, Mike Valentine wants to be able to stare at the wall in the locker room before the contest.

Valentine, NIU’s second-year equipment manager, arrives at Huskie Stadium at least six hours before a home game, and five or six hours before the contest when the team is on the road.

Valentine is making sure everything is set up, whether it’s putting the jerseys on the players’ shoulder pads, or taking care of little things such as wristbands or quarterback towels.

In a perfect world, everything will be good to go in advance, so Valentine can have the pleasure of staring at the wall.

“That means we’re good to go,” Valentine said. “My students think I’m crazy, but there’s so many times where we’ve showed up and [the assistants] are like, ‘Oh Mike, we’ve got to get this done and taken care of.’ We’ve got to build ourselves more time. I’d always rather have more time than be hurrying at the end.”

When the game starts, Valentine, who got his start working in the baseball clubhouse of the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, is taking care of things such as chin strap adjustments, bent facemasks and new shoes. Although having to put on a new facemask in a quick amount of time so the player can get back on the field can be tough, to Valentine, game days are the easy part.

These days during training camp, Valentine arrives on campus around 6 or 6:30 a.m.

He walks through the locker room, makes sure the laundry is passed out, fixes helmets, adds face shields and takes care of any new equipment a player may need.

TALK to your children when they are in the car with you. I always carried on a conversation, sang or counted to my kids, even newborns, and continued through the years they were rear-facing and forward-facing. It helped them to learn their ABCs, count, and even know where streets were.

It was also a running reminder that someone very special was with me. I never listened to the radio, unless it was nursery rhymes on DVD or toddler songs. When you are in a trump contract, you start by counting losers. But on some deals (I estimate around 20 percent), you do better to count winners. So, in an ideal world, you count both before playing from the dummy at trick one.

South is in five clubs. What should he do after West leads the spade king?

North’s double was negative, promising four hearts. South’s two-spade cue-bid was an artificial game-force. Then probably either South should have bid three no-trump over three clubs, or North should have cue-bid three spades over three diamonds to ask his partner to bid three notrump with a spade stopper.

Note, though, that to make three no-trump, declarer must win four club tricks. And after his ace drops West’s jack, the percentage play is to finesse East for the queen.

In five clubs, though, South can get home without guessing the trump suit. Suppose he wins the first trick with his spade ace and cashes his two top trumps.

Now he must collect these 11 tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and six clubs.

Declarer cashes his top diamonds, ruffs a diamond in the dummy, takes the heart ace and king, trumps a heart in his hand, and ruffs his last diamond.

That is 10 tricks in. And when South leads dummy’s last heart, he must collect one more trump trick with his nine via a coup en passant. If East ruffs low, South overruffs; if East ruffs with his queen, South discards a spade loser and his club nine is then high.
