Batavia festival spreads environmental awareness

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia resident Peter Kasper knows he gets his fair share of looks as he pedals his solar-powered bike-car hybrid to Fermilab, where he is a scientist “It seemed like the perfect commuting solution,” said Kasper, in talking about his three-wheeled car, called the ELF. He lives near Fermilab.

Kasper’s car was part of the alternative transportation show at Green Fair on the Fox on Saturday in downtown Batavia. Batavia MainStreet partnered with the Batavia Park District, the city of Batavia and the Batavia Environmental Commission to present the festival.

Carolyn Burnham, who chairs Green Fair on the Fox, said the event was designed to be a fun way for people to learn about sustainable living, healthy living and physical fitness.

Kasper said the ELF is classified as a bicycle and is designed for use under 30 mph.

Because it also has a rechargeable battery, he doesn’t have to pedal all the time.

“I only pedal if I am in a hurry,” Kasper said.

Debbie Morano, of Aurora, brought her 2013 Nissan Leaf electric car to the alternative transportation show. The car is fully electric, she said.

“The only fluid in the car is windshield wiper fluid,” said Morano, co-owner of Morano’s Pizza in Geneva. “There is nothing to break down in it.”

Morano said she bought the car because she wanted to do her part in helping the environment.

Representatives from Green Tomato Grocery provided information at the event about its efforts to create a cooperative grocery store that

would focus on providing natural and organic food that is locally produced.

“A cooperative helps keep money in the community,” said Jason Bell, vice president of the board of directors for Green Tomato Grocery.

Final Say to perform at park concert series

NORTH AURORA – Gavin and Kelly Kirchner haven’t been North Aurora residents long – only about a year – so they decided to go big for their first pet parade.

Their labradoodle, Anna, was not only the first pet registered for Sunday’s event but also dressed as Princess Anna from “Frozen,” complete with red braided pigtails.

Gavin and Kelly Kirchner joined their nearly 1-yearold pup in costume. He was dressed as Olaf, the snowman, while she portrayed the reindeer Sven.

“We thought we’d go all out for the first year,” Kelly Kirchner said, noting they moved from Naperville last August.

Now a part of North Aurora Days, the 33rd annual event began in May 1982 as a National Pet Week event to show the value of pets in people’s lives.

More than 50 pets – including cats, reptiles, a turtle, a hamster and many dogs – participated in this year’s parade, which began west of the Fox River at the North Aurora Activity Center parking lot and ended east of the river at the gazebo in Riverfront Park.

The event was sponsored

by Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic and supported by the North Aurora Lions and the North Aurora Firefighter’s Association.

Armstrong wins in dramatic fashion

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Dawson Armstrong saw his ball fly into the bunker, short of the green, on the second extra hole of championship match play Saturday at the 113th Western Amateur at Rich Harvest Farms Saturday.

His competitor, Aaron Wise, was on the green. After talking with his caddy, father Dale, Armstrong stepped into the bunker and lined up his shot.

“We talked walking up there and my dad said, ‘You have had some great shots today, but none have gone in,” Dawson Armstrong said.

Armstrong’s chip from the bunker bounced twice, tapped the flag stick, and found the bottom of the hole for an eagle. It ended up being his final shot of the day to win the championship, 1 up after 20 holes.

The first person he saw was his dad and, after a scream of excitement, the two embraced in a hug that neither will forget.

“It doesn’t get any better than that,” Dale Armstrong said. “I mean what an incredible shot. You hate to see that match end, the way they both were playing, but it was awesome.”

“Probably the best shot I have ever

hit, in that moment,” Dawson Armstrong said. “To have my dad be the first person I see, after making a shot like that, is something I’ll never forget.”

Armstrong, a sophomore at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee completed a long, grueling week-long run that saw him play near 144 holes of golf. His father guessed that the two had logged near 45 miles while walking the course the last three days.

But Armstrong, 19, talked of how many people were unaware of who he was entering tournament, but started to develop talk around RHF on Saturday after his semifinal victory over Robby Shelton.

Shelton entered the Western Am as the No. 6-ranked amateur player in the world, according to Scratch Players World Rankings.

“I feel like the way this all ended sounds fitting for how this week has been for me,” Dawson Armstrong said.

“I’ve heard that I’m the guy that not a lot of people knew or that I flew under the radar this week. You know what. ...

I’m fine with that. I think finishing like this put the emphasis on the ‘Cinderella story.’ ” Wise’s eventual eagle attempt to send the match to a third playoff hole

didn’t miss by much, giving him the runner-up finish, at no fault of his own.

“It was an incredible shot and an incredible way to end this tournament,” said Wise, a sophomore at Oregon from Lake Elsinore, California. “We both made some mistakes and made some great shots and that’s golf. I came here to get match play experience and I think I got that. I lost to someone who made an incredible shot, so it’s hard to be mad about that.”

But it wasn’t just Armstrong’s heroic save on 18 when the match looked all but over, or the near miss of the water hazard before chipping in the winning shot, it was also the way he did it.

Dawson wanted to have fun from the moment he got to the Western Am. Well, it was kind of hard not to leave with a smile on his face, either. But that smile and the cool, calm and collected attitude was present for most of the final round Saturday afternoon.

“I looked at my dad a few times and was just like, ‘how much fun is it,’ ” Dawson Armstrong said. “I mean, it was a great time. I came here with one goal and that was to have a great time.”

It may have been a surprise and unreal feeling for both father and son, but did it surprise Dale that his son had a blast and was able to smile in pressure

situations? Not a chance.

“That’s him... that’s who he is,” Dale Armstrong said. “He knows it’s all about a process. Not to worry about the result and go through your own process. He came here saying have fun and I’ll golf well, not golf well and then I’ll have fun. He has really learned that.”

But the fatigue factor set in much earlier than that 20th hole of the final match. From the minute he finished the first hole with Wise, Armstrong said his stomach began to cramp. It wasn’t until his last shot of the day went in until that pain went away.

Even before the stomach pain, Armstrong joked that putting his shoes on before the morning match against Shelton was a task in itself.

“I’ll tell you what, I thought, ‘How am I going to do this today,’ ” Dawson Armstrong said. “Thirty-six holes, three days in a row has been crazy. It’s a lot of golf and it will wear you out.”

With not only his family there, but friends from his hometown of Brentwood, Tennessee in the crowd, as well as joining the likes of past Western Am champions such as Jack Nicklaus (1961), Phil Mickelson (1991) and Tiger Woods (1994), Armstrong knows this could only be the start of something special for his golf career.

It also highlighted a solidifying pitching staff, with Arrieta (13-6) giving another dominating performance and closer Rondon (19th save) adding his own drama.

“He made a lot of good pitches and just battled,” catcher Miguel Montero said of Rondon, who gave up a single, double and hit a batter before the strikeouts – the last by Gregor Blanco looking.

“I was telling him, ‘Don’t

rush.’ Slow the game down a little. Hector is a closer and he’s got good stuff, and the way he kept his composure impresses you.”

Arrieta has been the most impressive of the starters, compiling a stretch in which he has gone 7-1 with a 1.23 ERA since June 21.

Arrieta’s 19 quality starts this season are second most in the majors, and he has thrown at least seven or more innings in five of his starts. “(Giants catcher) Buster (Posey) told me he’s one of the nastiest he’s faced,” Montero said. “He said he must be fun to catch. I said he is.”

Arrieta delivered at the plate, as well. His triple in the second was one of only four Cubs hits in the game – all off Giants starter Jake Peavy (2-

5), who struggled in the first inning but lasted through five.

He scored on Addison Russell’s sacrifice fly.

“The Giants are really good, and its different when you see them in the flesh,” Maddon said. “That’s what made these four games so impressive. They have the heart of a champion.

“We’re just playing well now. We’re hitting the ball better overall, catching the ball, though we still have to get the bullpen on firmer ground.

Game management this time of year is really important.

When you’re playing winning baseball, you do the small things.

“I have all the belief in the world we’ll continue to play this kind of baseball,” he added.

Cup at Kane’s home but party is ‘low key’ BUFFALO, N.Y. – Patrick Kane’s favorite place to eat in his old South Buffalo neighborhood seems almost as much shrine to the local boy-turnedNHL superstar as it is pizzeria.

Five signed Kane jerseys and other autographed memorabilia blanket line not just all the walls in the front of Imperial Pizza, a few blocks from where his parents still live. With all the wall space taken, there also are tributes to Kane on the pizzeria’s ceiling.

The display features No. 88 Blackhawks jerseys of every color – including a green one that’s affixed overhead and signed, “Happy St. Pat’s Day” – and Kane’s USA Olympic gear.

In addition to his autograph, the three-time Stanley Cup champion scrawled such personalized tributes as “world’s best pizza” and “thanks for all the support and great slices – ‘jus’ cheese.’ ” The tributes appear sincere.

After the first two Kane-fueled championships, Imperial Pizza was among the places where Kane brought the Stanley Cup

during his one-day turn at sharing the Cup with family, friends and fans in his hometown.

Neighbors in the middle-class section of this rustbelt city recall how Kane let them eat buffalo chicken wings from the Cup at Imperial Pizza, down the street from the Patrick Kane rink where he honed his hockey skills as a child.

The scene was much more subdued Saturday, when the Hawks had scheduled Kane’s day with the Cup in celebration of the team’s most recent triumph.

Rather than take the Cup around the city and publicly bask in the glory – as he had done in 2010 and 2013 – the festivities Saturday were limited to a private gathering of a few dozen family members and friends at Kane’s lakeside mansion in the Buffalo suburb of Hamburg.

The reason for what one Hawks source described as a more “low key” party here the

third time around was news that police are investigating allegations of an incident involving a woman last weekend at Kane’s house.

The police chief of Hamburg publicly acknowledged the probe Friday but cautioned that more information – much less a resolution – would not be known immediately.

“At this time, we are gathering information and awaiting forensic test results,” Hamburg Police Chief Gregory Wickett said.

Meanwhile, new details emerged from some who saw Kane on the night in question.

The owner of the SkyBar told the Buffalo News on Saturday that he and some employees noticed a woman “hanging all over” Kane at the bar for at least two hours the evening of Aug. 1.

Mark Croce, the owner, told the newspaper she was “being very forward, very flirtatious with him,” the newspaper reported. He also told the newspaper: “It was almost like she stationed herself near him and was keeping other women away from him. I noticed it and kind

of laughed about it.”

Croce also told the Buffalo News that the woman and a female friend “followed” Kane as he left the club with some male friends around 3 a.m.

The newspaper said it couldn’t verify whether the woman in the bar was at the center of the investigation.

Employees at Imperial Pizza said they had expected another visit from the Cup on Saturday, before Kane and the Cup were

to continue on to the next stop at a children’s hospital.

But all scheduled appearances were called off, and the Cup did not make a return to Imperial Pizza. “We were ready for it,” one glum employee said Saturday afternoon.

Also nixed were plans to make a stop late Saturday at Skybar, a rooftop nightclub in downtown Buffalo where Kane was spotted on the night of the alleged incident.

CHICAGO – August may bring “dog days’’ to many baseball teams – but Cubs manager Joe Maddon sees it as a time when the best show their stuff.

“I’m always looking for teams to get better by August,” he said. “That’s part of my minor league training, too.”

His team has done that, ushering in the month with its best winning stretch of the season – including sweeping a critical four-game series from a team it might have to defeat for a playoff spot.

How they did was as significant.

In Sunday’s 2-0 victory over the defending world champion San Francisco Giants, the Cubs made the most of only

four hits, accomplished “the little things” defensively and held strong in the ninth inning when the Giants loaded the bases with no outs but didn’t score.

“I think we’ve been ready (to win) for a while,” starter Jake Arrieta said. “It was figuring out how to do it, how to close out a series like that, and I think we have.

“In the past, we might have let that game slip away.”

Instead, closer Hector Rondon struck out the side to secure the first four-game sweep of the Giants at Wrigley Field since June 1977.

And more important, it gives the Cubs a 3½-game lead over the Giants for the second wild-card spot.

The subject of my living arrangements came up recently while I was on a date, and the woman immediately freaked out. She angrily informed me that I should have told her my ex-wife was living with me when we started talking. I felt it was something that could wait, at least past the first date.

Despite the fact that we were married, Cathy and I are nothing more than roommates now.

It is not unheard of for divorced couples to continue living together for financial reasons or to assist in co-parenting. Dear Abby: My 60-year-old son, “Martin,” is an accomplished litigation attorney, handsome and opinionated, but kind and attentive to me.

Unfortunately, he’s a terrible driver and always has been. Sometimes I think he has a death wish the way he drives. He speeds, texts, phones, and looks away from the road to talk to passengers in the car. I can’t understand how a man of his intelligence can be so reckless with his life and the lives of others.

He’s a husband, father and grandfather.

I hate to drive anywhere with Martin, even though he invites me to come along to various events. He doesn’t take kindly to criticism, and when I say he’s going too fast, he gets defensive. He just doesn’t get it. He thinks he’s invincible.

How do I tell my son I no longer want him to drive me?

Tell your son how much you love him. Then tell him the truth – that his driving makes you afraid not only for your own safety, but also for him and his family.

If he becomes defensive, let him rant, and when he runs out of breath, go on to say that this is the reason that, while you deeply appreciate his invitations, from now on you will be arranging your own transportation.

Many students ask me which conventions they should be using.

I typically answer, “As few as possible.”

Some are beneficial, like transfers into the majors and negative doubles. (I assume you are already using Stayman and Blackwood.)

After that, if you play a lot with the same partner, give New Minor Forcing a try. Look at today’s South hand. North opens one club, South responds one spade, and North rebids one no-trump. What should South do now?

He could raise to three notrump, but that would probably work badly, the defenders immediately taking four hearts and one diamond. How does South find out if partner has three-card spade support?

He could rebid three clubs or three diamonds, but each of those calls is not without risk. Instead, use New Minor Forcing.

South continues with two of the unbid minor. This shows at least game-invitational values and asks partner to describe his hand further.

Here, North bids two spades to show three-card support, and South raises to four spades.

West leads the heart two. East wins with his ace and returns the suit. West takes the trick, cashes his diamond ace, and shifts to a club. What happens next?

Declarer wins in the dummy, plays a spade to his queen, and cashes the ace, claiming when the king drops – or does he?

At trick five, a crafty East will smoothly play his spade king.

Then, surely South will win with his ace and lead a spade to dummy’s nine, going down when East produces the 10 out of his back pocket.
