couple of weeks ago, after much maneuvering of our schedules, I had the chance to visit with then Kane County Cougars outfielder Jake Hannemann and his wife, Shayli, at their host family’s home in St. Charles.

Kaneland superintendent moving to new district Will start new position Sept. 4

By EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com Kaneland School District 302 Superintendent Jeff Schuler has announced his intentions to resign and become the next superintendent of Wheaton Warrenville School District 200.

Schuler will begin his new job Sept. 4. He said on the phone Thursday that he made the decision one week ago, after the Wheaton Warrenville school board contacted him about drawing up a contract.

Schuler said there was no particular reason that made him want to leave Kaneland, but rather he views District 200 as a “tremendous opportunity … to build success on a larger scale.”

The soon-to-be former Kaneland superintendent said he would miss District 302 and the relationships he had cultivated with board members and the community.

“The Kaneland communi-

ty is an incredibly supportive community that values their public schools,” he said in a prepared statement.

Speaking about his new job, Schuler said that while it was premature to outline goals and plans, he hopes to foster a strong partnership with the community to ensure effective policies.

Schuler mentioned the “Engage 200” process that the Jeff Schuler Wheaton Warrenville district implemented to engage community members as a future tool that would help define and clearly outline what priorities residents have for the education system and how he could help.

District 200 Board Vice President Jim Vroman said during interviews with Schuler that Schuler integrated many points of En-

gage 200 into his presentation, something that meant a lot because the process “was so meaningful for all of us.”

“There is no other profession where you can have such a profound impact on the future of our communities and the future of our country,” Schuler said. “I serve in education because I can see the impact of our work and opportunities we create for kids.”

Kaneland Board of Education President Cheryl Krauspe in a written statement praised Schuler’s tenure as superintendent.

“He has been highly praised and recognized as a leader in educational excellence and improvement while he has served Kaneland,” Krauspe said. “We are proud of our accomplishments under Dr. Schuler’s four years of educational leadership.”

However, not all board members are sad to see Schuler leave.

Tony Valente said Schuler’s lack of experience and trouble communicating with the school board not only caused controversy, but hurt

the district and made him unpopular with some residents.

“I’ve never come across a person, to be blunt with you, who said, ‘Wow, he is doing a great job.’ I’ve never come across that person,” Valente said.

The Proviso East High School principal said he would demand an interview process for potential candidates to replace Schuler.

The Board of Education will immediately begin planning to replace Schuler, Krauspe said.

“This is a significant decision, perhaps the most important one a board of education can make,” she said in a statement. “Taking this obligation seriously, we will be thoughtful and will not make this selection hastily.”

District 200 Board member Rosemary Swanson said the entire board agreed on Schuler’s selection, although member Jim Gambaiani was absent for the formal vote due to a family commitment.

“You clearly have your compass pointed in the right direction,” she said of Schuler. “I’m looking forward to

seeing where you take us.”

Schuler’s base salary will be $225,000, and he will receive a pay raise each year based on the Consumer Price Index, with a 5 percent cap, according to his contract.

He also can earn an additional amount based on his annual performance evaluation rating, potentially bumping the increase up as much as another 2 percent annually.

“BEST IN THE MIDWEST OR ANYWHERE” Mill Creek home burglarized Kane County Flea Market

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – A resident near the Mill Creek Golf Club returned home last week to find her home had been burglarized, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

The resident of the 39W300 block of East Curtis Square in Blackberry Township reportedly told police she returned home about 5 p.m. July 25 to find hallway and closet lights on and furniture drawers and bedroom doors open.

There also was evidence of forced entry to a patio door, police said.

Three rings and five watches were reported missing.

A K-9 unit picked up a scent off the back patio and tracked it east of the home, along the bush line behind a neighboring house and along the golf path and through the golf course of the nearby Mill Creek Golf Club, police said.

The scent was reportedly lost around Bartelt and Keslinger roads.

During the search, a deputy saw where someone had lain in weeds and brush, police said.

A witness told police she saw two subjects near a house between 12:30 and 2 p.m. but thought they were golfers, so she didn’t pay much attention to them. She only remembered them because of their proximity to the residence, police said.

COVER STORY ABUNDANT CROPS, LOWER PRICES Local farmers see less money for high yield of corn, soybeans

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A delayed spring season has not stopped Joe White’s corn crop so far this year.

The corn he planted in late April on his property in Kaneville Township already has pollinated, and he expects his early May planting to not be too far behind.

“With the weather we are predicting, it shouldn’t have any issues,” said White, who is the Kane County Farm Bureau Board president. White and his father, John, have slightly more than 1,200 acres of farmland across northern Illinois.

White’s crops mirror the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s recent crop condition reports, which are released every Monday. The latest report rated 82 percent of Illinois corn as good to excellent, up 1 percent from the previous week. For Illinois soybeans, 78 percent were rated as good to excellent, also up 1 percent from last week.

Farmers were able to make up some ground from a harsh winter season, which did affect the northern Illinois wheat and hay crops. Bob Gehrke, District 1 director of the Illinois Farm Bureau, said he lost 80 percent of his wheat crop and 20 percent of his alfalfa, or hay. Gehrke farms on 400 acres at his Plato Township property and is part of an operation totaling 1,800 acres.

“A lot of the wheat ended up getting replaced with corn and soybeans,” said Phil Farrell, grain department manager at the Elburn Cooperative.

The Cooperative, or Coop, is owned by local farmers and helps provide them with agronomic services.

The November futures soybean price in May was $12.28 a bushel, and now it’s $10.80 a bushel, Farrell said.

Even though heavy rains in May and June ruined some of the northern Illinois soybean crop, its prices still are down because central Illinois

crops did not see any of that precipitation, Farrell said.

Farmers agree that the best chance to offset their costs is to hope that they can have a higher-than-average yield of crops to sell at the below average price.

The upcoming weather is going to be a key factor to determine how crops will end up in the fall, Gehrke said. Even though the soybeans suffered under heavy rain earlier this summer, Gehrke said that it would be ideal to get an inch of rain twice this month to ensure the crops grow to their full potential.

Surgeon sues St. Charles chiropractor alleging defamation ST. CHARLES – A Bartlett orthopedic surgeon is suing a St. Charles chiropractor and his practice, alleging the chiropractor defamed him by calling him a “butcher” and alleging the surgeon would do unnecessary surgery, according to court papers filed in DuPage County recently.

According to the lawsuit, Dr. Howard Freedberg is accusing Pat Calcagno, founder and CEO of Olympia Chiropractic and Physical Therapy in St. Charles, of defaming him in a conversation with a boy at

a St. Francis High School football event last August. The boy was 16 at the time.

The teen was scheduled to undergo surgery with Freedberg for a sports injury and was using crutches at the event, according to the lawsuit.

Calcagno approached the teen to ask why he was on crutches and to press for details as to the type of surgery he was going to have and by whom, according to the suit.

“Calcagno told him that Dr. Freedberg was ‘a butcher’ and that he should get a second opinion before being operated on by ‘the butcher.’ [Calcag-

no] further stated to [the teen] that the only reason that Dr. Freedberg wanted to perform surgery on him was that Dr. Freedberg was going through a difficult divorce and that he needed the money,” according to the complaint.

The teen – identified in court papers as John Doe – was surprised by Calcagno’s comments and replied that Freedberg was well-known in his field, to which Calcagno replied that he was not well-regarded. And that “Dr. Freedberg ‘takes pictures with famous people but isn’t recognized in his field,’ ” the complaint states.

Calcagno told the teen he did not need surgery “and that he should instead be treated at Olympia if he wanted to return to the football field sooner,” according to the complaint.

Freedberg found out about the conversation after the teen told his parents and they told the surgeon, the complaint states.

Freedberg is asking for damages of more than $50,000, plus legal fees and a jury trial. The next court date is Aug. 12 in Wheaton.

Freeberg attorney Lance Northcutt said he tried to reach out to Calgano for an explanation and retraction

before filing suit, but the chiropractor never responded to their calls.

“Dr. Freedberg has built an outstanding reputation as a physician and surgeon,” Northcutt said. “And this [was] false and blatantly damaging commentary to a prospective patient about to go undergo surgery.”

Northcutt said the teen boy went ahead with the scheduled surgery and is doing fine.

Calcagno did not return messages seeking comment.

Man was fatally stabbed at Batavia Apartments complex in 2012

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The defense attorney for a woman charged in a stabbing death at the Batavia Apartments complex in 2012 argued in court on Thursday that her client didn’t understand her Miranda rights before being interviewed by Batavia police.

Latoya Baines, 27, who lived at the Batavia Apartments complex at the time of the stabbing, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the April 30, 2012, stabb i n g d e a t h Latoya Baines of Chicago resident Gerald J. Jackson, 25. Police said the stabbing was the result of a domestic dispute.

“Here is a young woman whose only prior arrest was driving on a suspended license,” Baines’ defense attor-

ney, Sandra Byrd, told Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles.

Byrd has filed a motion seeking to suppress evidence obtained through four interviews that Batavia police had with Baines.

While Byrd acknowledged that Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz read Baines her rights before interviewing her, “he didn’t make any attempt to ensure she knows what these rights mean,” she said. “The mere fact that she said she understood her rights doesn’t mean she understood them.”

Bretz testified in court Thursday that Baines “said she [understood] her Miranda rights.” He also testified that he did not interview Baines when she was initially brought into the police station because she was intoxicated.

“She was placed in a cell so she could sleep,” Bretz said.

Bretz also testified that Baines told him she was bipolar after she was told she was being charged with first-degree murder.

In arguing against Byrd’s motion, prosecutors contended there is no evidence to show that Baines had any mental or physical issues that would prevent her from

understanding her Miranda rights.

Boles said she plans to watch the interview tapes before ruling on the motion on Wednesday. She had recently ruled that Baines is fit to stand trial after citing the results of a psychological evaluation of her.

Byrd had raised concerns about whether Baines was fit to stand trial.

Baines remains in the Kane County Jail on a $750,000 bail. She has been in custody for more than 800 days.

Police responding to the initial incident in 2012 found two women, one of them Baines, struggling with each other at the bottom of a stairwell.

Officers said they later found three knives in the hallway where the women had been struggling.

“Evidence in this case points to [Baines] being in possession of three knives before the stabbing of Jackson, and being in possession of one knife at the time that Jackson was stabbed,” according to court records.

After conducting a field investigation, police said they were able to determine the incident occurred as a result of a domestic dispute between the victim and Baines.

Davis Richmond suit

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District 303 Board on Thursday took its first public vote on a settlement involving the Davis Richmond school litigation.

School board members at a special meeting Thursday voted 6-1 in favor of rejecting a $240,000 lawsuit settlement offer. Board member Judith McConnell cast the only “no” vote.

“The board felt it wasn’t appropriate,” Board President Steve Spurling said after the meeting, which included a 90-minute closed session.

District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann confirmed Thursday’s vote was the first time the school board has voted on a settlement regarding the Davis-Richmond lawsuit in open session.

The settlement would have been paid out to the plaintiffs of the class action suit filed in fall 2013 and the suit that resulted in the Corrective Action Plan for Davis Richmond School, said Stan Eisenhammer, an attorney for the school board.

Parents of the district orig-

inally sued in 2011 after the school board voted the same year to restructure Davis and Richmond schools.

Attorneys await an appellate court response on the second suit, Eisenhammer said. A briefing schedule in appellate court for the class-action suit has recently been set with the district’s first brief due in November.

At the start of Thursday’s meeting, the school board voted 4-2 to enter into closed session with member Jim Gaffney and Board Vice-President Kathy Hewell against the motion.

Board member Corinne Pierog arrived from out of town during the closed session.

Tim Dwyer, an attorney for the plaintiffs was invited into the school board’s closed session about 30 minutes after it began at 6:04 p.m. Thursday. He left the session and the district building where the meeting was held after a brief statement. “ I just gave them my perspective … and we’ll see,” Dwyer said.

Dwyer could not immediately be reached Thursday evening for further comment after the vote.

A better understanding of the muon could lead to a better understanding of the other basic building blocks of nature, Eads added.

“If you understand the universe and everything around this, then that’s a good thing,” he said.

One of NIU’s main roles in the experiment will be quality control testing for a complex straw-tube tester, a type of particle detector being built in Liverpool, England. The device detects particles known as positrons, which result from the decay of muons.

Aaron Epps, 34, who lives in DeKalb, started working on the project two years ago.

A graduate student in physics, Epps designed, coded and tested methods to measure tension on the wires that will be used in the quality control tests. He now is learning simulation software and plans to stay with the experiment until

it’s complete.

“While we’re not trying to build a new product, we’re really probing fundamentally how the universe works,” Epps said.

Shenk, a physics major living in DeKalb, is working on a simulation that will help determine the best way to set up the experiment. She plans to work at Fermilab among scientists from 26 institutions across the world through the coming school year and next summer.

Michael McEvoy, 24, of St. Charles has spent the summer before he starts his second year of graduate school preparing for the experiment.

McEvoy is part of a group working on slow controls, or long-term data temperature, pressure and other properties of the machine.

The group is still designing the right system and types of sensors that will be placed on the magnet.

What the experiment will mean to people who aren’t apt at solving a particle physics puzzle won’t be clear immediately after the experiment and all data collection is done close to 2020, scientists said. But they said without hesitation it will leave an impression on the world.

“The regular, average person won’t see right away,” McEvoy said. “But what comes from our research will be very important. The second generation of research will lead to new innovation.”

Fox Valley Park District Board members will now be elected, rather than appointed, as the result of a bill sponsored by state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles.

Gov. Pat Quinn recently approved the bill, which reorganizes Illinois’ second largest park district in the state and sets up new provisions for the selection of commissioners and district mapping.

The Fox Valley Park District serves the communities of North Aurora, Aurora and Montgomery. The current appointment process does not give taxpayers the ability to hold their park district officials accountable, McConnaughay said in a news release.

“Implementing an electoral process for the Fox Valley Park District’s Board of Commissioners will increase transparency and accountability,” McConnaughay said in the release.

“Senate Bill 3387 will help

Fox Valley meet the intent of state law by requiring voters to elect their park district officials and assure that officials are accountable to the taxpayers they represent.”

Fox Valley Park District Board President Robert Vaughan agreed that the bill will provide more accountability.

“As the only remaining Illinois park district whose board of trustees is appointed, we welcome this transition that will allow our residents to elect their representatives by virtue of their vote,” Vaughan said in the release. “This will lead to greater engagement and participation by residents throughout the communities of Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery, which we serve. We are very excited and supportive of the new direction this will take us.”

Starting in 2016, the Fox Valley Park District will elect seven commissioners from three two-member districts, and one commissioner will be elected at-large.

Four commissioners will be elected to serve a four-year term, while three commissioners will serve a two-year term, with four-year terms thereafter.

Mary Shenk thought helping to solve an unexplained phenomenon about life’s basic building blocks seemed like the best way to spend her summer.

Shenk, a 33-year-old Northern Illinois University graduate student, is one of more than a dozen NIU students and faculty members working at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory on a high-profile experiment centered around a 17-ton magnet and a mysterious subatomic particle.

“The results we get from this will help to discover new particle physics and discover new things about the universe,” Shenk said.

The Muon g-2 experiment will study the elusive muon and its interaction with magnetic fields. Scientists believe the experiment could lead to the discovery of new particles or hidden subatomic forces.

The 50-foot-wide circular electromagnet that made a 3,200-mile journey from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York last summer will be the centerpiece of the Muon g-2 experiment. Workers completed the final leg of the magnet’s journey Wednesday, moving it into a building where the experiment will happen in 2016.

Muons are a heavier version of electrons, wobbling like a spinning top.

Scientists know why muons wobble, but the way they wobble remains a mystery. A study done by Brookhaven scientists in 2001 showed the muons’ wobble didn’t match what was predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics, which covers how fundamental particle make up the matter in the universe.

The Fermilab experiment will have four times the precision of the Brookhaven experiment.

“It has the possibility to rewrite the textbook,” said Mike Eads, an assistant professor of physics, who has led NIU’s Muon g-2 contingent since it started two years ago. “It can tell us the standard model is

Motorist pulled over, tells officer to wait, police say

According to a St. Charles Police Department report, an officer conducting stationary radar in the 900 block of East Main Street clocked an Audi going 47 mph in the 30

mph zone just after 9 p.m.

Tuesday.

The motorist, identified as Andrew Ballou Fahrenwald, Andrew reportedly stopped in a Ballou parking lot in Fahrenwald the 600 block of East Main Street and rolled down his

window but was talking on the phone.

He ended his call only after the officer repeatedly asked him to, police reported.

“I asked him to hang up so I could talk to him,” the officer said in the report. “He told me he was busy and I could wait. I again told him to hang up, he could finish the call later.”

Setting his phone on the vehicle’s console, Fahren-

wald reportedly gave the officer his insurance card and driver’s license, per the officer’s request.

Police said Fahrenwald was back on the phone before the officer could confirm his address.

“I again told him to hang up until I was finished talking to him,” the officer reported.

“He again told me he was busy and I could wait. I told him I was not going to wait and he

could talk on the phone later.”

Fahrenwald put the phone down, and the officer reportedly asked him to step out of the car for an unrelated matter. Fahrenwald refused, and the officer had to pull him out of the vehicle – at which time Fahrenwald was on the phone again, police said.

Fahrenwald, of the 6600 block of Lanterne Drive, Loves Park, was charged with resisting police and speeding.

THE WASHINGTON POST House and Senate conferees have agreed on a $17 billion bill to address the scandal over poor health care service at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The legislation is now on a fast track to pass Congress before its August recess, showing that Republican and Democratic lawmakers can still agree on their concern for those who served their country in uniform – and their fear of facing those same veterans in town halls and, eventually, at the polls.

The problems at the VA centered on the long waits, sometimes months, that some veterans faced just to see a doctor at one of the department’s nearly 1,000 hospitals and clinics. On top of that, some senior VA officials allegedly knew about the excessive backlogs and covered them up by falsifying data.

The new bill attacks the wait-time problem in two main ways: It provides $5 billion to hire more doctors and otherwise increase the VA’s capacity, and it offers $10 billion in emergency funds so that some vets can seek care outside the VA system.

The former strikes us as throwing more money into a system that has already proven itself far too inflexible and bureaucratic to adjust to meet demand, hence the awful wait times.

The latter component – money to help vets take advantage of a wider range of health-care options – seems more promising. Meanwhile, the bill could add billions to the deficit since its authors could agree to only $5 billion in spending reductions elsewhere within the department’s $154 billion budget.

More shortsighted is the bill’s approach to “accountability” for the senior VA executives who have been trying to make an inherently problematic bureaucracy work.

Yes, a small minority of them did allegedly engage in outrageous data-fudging.

But the bill would strip all of the department’s top civil servants of long-standing protections, exposing them to firing at a moment’s notice with only seven days to file an appeal and three weeks to argue it.

Perhaps this is just the thing to instill new efficiency at the VA. More likely, it would have the opposite effect, as the most able federal civil servants choose not to work in a department where their job security might vary according to the scandal du jour.

My mail lately has me seeing red I used to love going to my mailbox. It was a journey of maybes.

Maybe The Atlantic Monthly would accept my short story. Maybe a forgotten great aunt had died in Dubai and left me her yacht, condo and a cool billion. Maybe someone had written me a letter on real stationery in real ink.

Lately, however, I’ve received some real clunkers, worse even than the usual detritus: the litany of bills; my wife’s cellophane-suffocated cooking magazines; coupons that conspire to expire the day before I present them; pre-approved credit cards that need scissoring before trashing; and the innumerable “Or Current Resident” recyclables.

Take the ivory envelope sporting a “Neptune Society” return address. Didn’t Neptune rule the sea, carry a trident and resemble something out of “The Little Mermaid”? Maybe a free scuba lesson or a Bahamas vacation!

Then I noticed at the bottom, “Free Pre-Paid Cremation! DETAILS INSIDE.” Huh? Cremation? Was this a misspelled dairy giveaway? An Oberweiss ad?

“Dear Richard,” Neptune’s letter began, assuring me “more and more people” were choosing cremation over “traditional funeral arrangement – and the numbers are increasing every year!”

How could I argue with those statistics, proven legitimate with an

RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger exclamation point? “It just makes sense!” Neptune screamed like an excited cheerleader.

But wait! There’s more! A contest entry form enticing me to “WIN A PRE-PAID CREMATION.” Although part of me burned (haha) to enter, my adolescent side, convinced of my immortality, pooh-poohed it.

Just when thinking the mail couldn’t worsen, a Halloween-orange envelope arrived, addressed to me, announcing, “RED LIGHT PHOTO ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM.” “Great!” I thought, “now I’ll know which intersections to avoid.”

Ah, the naiveté of the ignorant!

Instead of a camera placement map, RLPEP, courtesy of the village of Wayne, sent photographs of my son Jay’s car and its license plate.

“DISOBEYING TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNAL,” RLPEP announced. “AMOUNT DUE $100.00.”

“Wait, wait!” my mind stammered, falsely accused. “I wasn’t in Wayne at 11:30 p.m. on June 22!”

Wayne didn’t care. Could have been my dog, Chewball, driving. All Wayne wanted was its C-note. “This notice is NOT a uniform traffic cita-

tion. Payment will not impact your driving privileges or insurance.”

“There was no one around,” Jay, complained, as I would have. “This is so ridiculous.”

“Most people agree,” I said.

“The Tri-Cities have rejected the program.”

Those cameras are wannabe traffic cops with no in-person context to weigh the circumstances. Towns using them remind me of biblical money-changers who, under a beneficent guise, cannot disguise their greed.

Tell me about one Wayne resident enjoying the revenue from RLPEP who, at night, with no cars in sight, comes to a complete stop at a red light before turning right, and I’ll tell you a fairy tale. Hypocrisy lives in any town with the program.

I’d like to feed the village of Wayne’s scary, orange, presorted, first-class mail, photo enforcement envelope’s contents into Neptune Society’s oven, but that is reserved for things with a soul.

Mill Creek brings ‘FootGolf’ to area

By STEPHEN BOURBON editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – With the recent World Cup demonstrating an increase in soccer popularity in the United States, a sport called FootGolf is also on the rise.

Using a regulation-size soccer ball, FootGolf combines the basics of soccer and golf into one sport. Players play with golf rules except clubs and golf balls are replaced with feet and soccer balls. The Federation for International FootGolf has 12 members and held the first FootGolf World Cup in Budapest in 2012.

FootGolf recently came to the area, as the Mill Creek Golf Club in Geneva has added FootGolf to its par-3 course. The

timing of opening the course during soccer’s World Cup was merely a coincidence, but perhaps a fortunate one.

“People have been raving about it,” Mill Creek general manager Steve Feddern said.

“We just want people out here having fun, that’s the bottom line.”

Feddern met with Mill Creek’s parent company, Eagle Golf, in Dallas, Texas, this spring, and the opportunity came up to put FootGolf into the Chicago area market. With Mill Creek already having a practice par-3 course on its site, the decision to add FootGolf was a no-brainer.

The FootGolf course opened July 3 at Mill Creek on its short par-3 course located across the

street from the clubhouse in the Mill Creek neighborhood.

The course will continue to be used by both golfers and FootGolfers alike as the two can be played in conjunction with one another. The FootGolf holes – 21 inches in diameter – are just off the greens, in the fringe or rough area.

“Whether it’s FootGolf or it’s soccer players that like FootGolf and want to give regular golf a try, we just want to kids out on the course,” Feddern said.

Eventually, Mill Creek could host actual tournaments for professional FootGolfers in the area through the Illinois FootGolf Association.

So far the plan has worked in the course’s first few weeks,

attracting both soccer players and golfers to try out the new facilities.

“We can come out and enjoy the game that we love,” Sarah Migliazzo, a Geneva and Mill Creek resident, said as she and her children recently visited the course.

“It’s a great idea,” Geneva’s Amy Ahean added. “If you can’t get 11 people together, you can do this and just enjoy the day.”

Rates are $10 for adults and $5 for kids and each payment grants patrons unlimited trips through the course for the rest of the day. Ball rentals also are available for $3.

The course’s grand opening took place Saturday after an earlier date was washed away by inclement weather.

cially took up golf in fifth grade and has remained diligent about improving.

As an East freshman, she advanced to a Class AA sectional at Ingersoll in Rockford. On Wednesday, she’ll compete in a Drive, Chip & Putt subregional at Cog Hill in Lemont with a spot in September’s regionals at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Indiana on the line.

A deep knowledge of Pottawatomie permeates everything. Kacie Gaffney finds “it’s just natural to be there” at the Saints’ home course, crediting her dad for helping her rediscover her passion for the place last summer after also practicing at Geneva’s Mill Creek.

Kevin Gaffney, a self-described self-taught golfer, played at Pottawatomie often as a young adult. He grew up in St. Charles, but his family moved to Florida in the early 1970s.

He graduated from high school and college in the Sunshine State, then re-

turned to his hometown.

“I love it up here,” he said. “Not ready for Florida yet.”

There’s certainly no rush to leave now, what with Kacie Gaffney poised for a strong East career and her father aiming to defend his title in 2015.

Initially shaky about his match-play chops, Kevin Gaffney found his daughter was especially effective in helping with the format’s ultimate X-factor: putting.

“There were instances where maybe my alignment was off or something,” he said, “so she was really helpful there.”

Kevin Gaffney claimed a series of tight victories to win the tournament, culminating with a 1-up defeat of Tim Triplett in a championship match decided on the 18th hole.

A few days before the men’s tournament began, Kacie Gaffney pushed St. Charles North’s Gianna Furrie for the Girls 15 to 17 title at the St. Charles Ju-

nior Tournament. Furrie’s two-day 84 edged Gaffney by four shots.

As she carried her father’s bag instead of her own, Kacie Gaffney identified with him on a golf course once more.

“Yeah, I definitely feel what [her parents] feel now when they’re watching me play,” she said. “It’s especially kind of frustrating because you want to help them if they make a bad shot, but there’s only so much you can say.

“But definitely it’s fun to see him succeed. … It was fun to watch him play and even if he hits a bad shot, he’s really humble.

He stays positive, and he tries to. I know that he’s worked really hard for this win, definitely.”

Recent Geneva graduate and incoming Illinois State freshman Abby Luchtenburg fared well in her tournament in downstate Savoy while Kaneland product Hayley Guyton, a Redbirds senior, Hayley Guyton shined in Romeoville.

Luchtenburg was runner-up in the twoday IWGA Junior Girls Championship at the University of Illinois Orange Course, shooting a 7-over-par 151.

Abby Competing at the Luchtenburg Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood Golf Club, Guyton fired a three-day 229, 13 strokes over par.

On Sunday, she enjoyed a mini-spree when her father, responsible for the other part, won the D-flight match-play championship of the St. Charles Men’s Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

Kevin Gaffney earned a pro shop stipend for his victory, but knew no better benefactor than his daughter and caddie.

A few years after buying her first set of clubs from late former Pottawatomie pro Jim Wheeler, Kacie Gaffney, a St. Charles East sophomore, purchased a new set of Ping irons.

“She did pretty well,” Kevin Gaffney said. “She made out.”

Revelry was a two-way street for the father-daughter duo last month. Ask Kacie Gaffney about spending the last two weekends of July on her dad’s bag and thoughts of her unexpected gift at the end of the run stay far from her lips.

No stranger to caddying for her dad at men’s tournaments – she takes after older brother, Joe, one of five Gaffney siblings – Kacie Gaffney simply basked in re-enacting the old times.

Of course, she toted nothing but curiosity the first day she toured Pottawatomie with the men in her family.

“My mom and my sisters, I think, went shopping one day, and I didn’t want to go,” Kacie Gaffney said. “So I was like, ‘Oh, let me go golfing with dad and Joe.’ Ever since the second grade, I’ve been walking the course with them.”

But at some point, even the defending IHSA Class 6A football champs have to turn their attention to the next season. And that precisely is what the Bulldogs were doing Thursday night.

Batavia was one of four teams participating in a 7-on7 event at Mooseheart. And for the Bulldogs – who are significantly depleted at the offensive skill positions after the graduation of stars such as quarterback Micah Coffey and running back Anthony Scaccia – it was the perfect time to see what they have in the next wave of starters.

Coach Dennis Piron listed numerous names that could take over in the touchdown creation department at running back, quarterback and

receiver. So who exactly will those guys taking over for the departed Bulldogs be?

In the backfield, Piron said Blake Crowder will receive the majority of the handoffs.

Still, after a year of workhorse running from Scaccia, it could be a little more of a running back by committee.

“Noah Frazier is moving Dennis Piron to fullback. At 225 pounds, about the strongest kid we’ve ever had at our school. Fast and mean, and he’ll get the ball and we’ll see if people can tackle him,” Piron said. “And he’ll do a real nice job there.

Blake Crowder, who was our backup tailback, is back this year. Has looked exceptional in camp. He is somebody that I think has huge explosiveness, breakaway speed.

son,” Piron said. “So we’ve got a number of guys, and we did a lot of that a couple years ago. Last year it was Scaccia.

But the two years prior, we had about five or six guys we rotated at all the back positions. I can see a little bit of that.”

Evan Acosta was on fulltime quarterback duty Thursday night, and it’ll be him

and Kyle Niemiec looking to succeed Coffey under center.

Piron also likes what he’s seeing from his wideouts, who sounded like a starting five for a basketball team when the head coach listed off all their 6-foot-plus heights.

“We have some nice size in those skill positions at the receiver spot that we think will create a dilemma for people, so I’ve been very, very happy with that,” he said.

But although it’s the skill positions that will be one of the main focuses heading into the 2014 season, the key to the Bulldogs’ title defense might be in the trenches, where Piron is thrilled by the prospects of his offensive and defensive linemen.

He said an experienced offensive line will allow the new quarterbacks time to grow, and he added that opposing teams will have a tough time trying to block an exceptional pass rush.

“A good way to start out

is with two defensive ends from your state-championship team who got after the quarterback greater than anyone in the history of our school,” he said. “That’s a scary thought.”

Celebration time might not be over just yet. Heck, it might never end. But the 2014 season is approaching, and that means it’s time to go back to work.

Practices start Aug. 11.

“I think everybody celebrated while they continued to work,” Piron said. “They took a little break, got their bodies healthy. Some guys had some things they had to get fixed up, surgeries. You need that recovery time, but when they got back to work, they got back to work pretty hard. I think it shows.”

“This has always been a group of kids who had to work harder for what they wanted, and I think that hard work is really going to pay off this season.”

In his AHL debut last season, Alex Broadhurst, 21, led all Rockford rookies with 16 goals, 29 assists and 45 points in 75 games. Terry Broadhurst, 25 and a left-handed shot like his brother, wasn’t far behind, contributing 16 goals and 28 assists in 73 games.

Skating alongside Cyclones Amateur Hockey Association youth players as part of a skills camp for current and prospective players here kept the Broadhursts humble in their professional pursuits.

Ditto for the handful of other prospects on hand, including Finnish center Teuvo Teravainen, the Hawks’ first round draft pick in 2012.

Sharing shifts again at Fox Valley Ice Arena this week, the Broadhursts still brooded slightly, which is more than usual. The Hawks did not renew Terry Broadhurst’s contract in the offseason, prompting him to sign with the rival St. Louis Blues organization.

That’s hockey, Terry Broadhurst reasoned. Even so, it’s the game he grew up playing without a most familiar face as he lines up at left wing.

“Yeah, it kind of bums us both out,” Alex Broadhurst said. “I mean, it was cool.

Last year was the first year we got to play together, so it was a lot of fun. Obviously, it kind of [stinks] not being able to play with your brother again, but, I mean, it’ll be fun. We play against them a lot.”

You see these guys out here having fun, scoring goals, doing the celebrations. It’s no different in the pro games that we score and do the celebration. So it’s cool to see the passion. I think that’s the biggest comparison. These kids out here have a lot of it, so it’s nice to be around.”

Of course, observation is a twoway street.

“I think it’s good for kids to see guys like us who aren’t quite there yet, but we’re still trying to fight for it. For the NHL,” Alex Broadhurst said. “It’s good for these kids to see us and how we act and how we do things around the rink and stuff.”

Cyclones program director Pete Rutili had ties to the professional players through his involvement with Acme World Sports. The Broadhursts are set to return to Fox Valley in two weekends as part of a skills clinic.

SPORTS BRIEFS Cougars lose again, but new reinforcement coming APPLETON, Wis. – The skid continues.

Wisconsin rallied for four runs in the eighth inning Thursday en route to a 7-3 win that extended the Cougars’ season-high losing streak to six games.

Kane County, the Midwest League’s first-half Western Division champion, drew even on Cael Brockmeyer’s RBI double in the top of the eighth, but the bullpen was unable to hold serve.

The Cougars open a three-game homestand against Quad Cities at 6:30 p.m. today. An eventful day of roster moves preceded Thursday’s first pitch.

Earlier in the afternoon, multiple reports confirmed the parent Cubs promoted right-hander Tyler Skulina to Advanced-A Daytona. A fourth-round draft pick in 2013, Skulina was 4-7 with a 3.21 ERA with the Cougars this season, striking out 68 batters in 18 starts covering 89⅔innings.

While the Cougars did not announce a corresponding roster move, recently-acquired catcher Victor Caratini is set to join the club, per multiple reports. Caratini was part of the Cubs’ trade that sent infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio and left-handed reliever James Russell to the

Bulldog Champion track meet debuts strongly BATAVIA – More than 50 past, present and potentially future Batavia track and field athletes participated in Wednesday’s inaugural Bulldog Champion meet at Batavia High School.

“Had some good times and great performances all the way around,” Batavia girls track coach Justin Allison said. “It was great to see. It was really good for the community.”

The meet, comprised of six running events and four field events, used fully-automated timing and the usual bells and whistles of a high school meet, but still was geared toward recreation and fun.

‘Dog Days’ of summer are upon us Growing up in St. Charles in those days long ago, summer seemed to have three phases.

The first phase was just before school let out for summer; then we had the lazy, hazy days of swimming, picnics, air-conditioned movie theaters, family trips, carnivals and fireworks, and just plain playing together from morning until night, after collecting sufficient lightening bugs or night crawlers.

The middle phase, often called “dog days,” started with the ultra hot and steamy days of August. The Romans had named a star in the summer sky Sirus the Dog, which was in the constellation Sirus Major. The dog star was considered to bring evil, such as boiling seas, sour wine, mad dogs and fevers.

Contrary to the common sense of children, the adults, understanding from either superstition or repeated health bulletins and recommendations, deemed that swimming pools, movie theaters and other gathering places that were considered crowded multiplied the exposure. Known cases were quarantined.

Hometown images included friends and neighbors fatally attacked or a mom frequently examining a child for a fever or stiff neck.

The last phase of summer was after school started again – in schoolrooms with open windows and the hope for a breeze.

It was tough to stay cool in “school clothes,” which were uniform in the sense that everyone dressed according to an unwritten code of no bare feet, no bare or too casual outfits and – unthinkably – no electronic devices. Hey, we couldn’t even pass a paper note, according to some rule somewhere.

Out of step, as often was the case, my polio virus struck in the third phase of summer. No big crowd, just the Hahn kids across the street and a couple of neighbor kids jumping into a huge pile of fallen leaves from on top of a rose trellis with a trellis roof suitable for a flying start.

My mother yelled from her sufficiently audible window across the street not to play in the leaves or else I might get sick.

This warning from the daughter of my grandmother, who always warned/ threatened that to sit in or on the snow would surely cause hemorrhoids. This was the same family that declared “stop crying or else your face will freeze.”

This warning was at least documented in a fairy tale book shared with me by my other grandmother.

That night my temperature rose to 105 degrees. Houston, we have a virus.

The big one.

Getting back to “dog days:” It is still time to be good guardians of our dogs regardless of our weird weather so far.

Perhaps there is a star in the sky that brings out the idiots who would leave a pet in a hot automobile or chained outdoors without a comfortable spot and fresh water. These are the dogs that bark day and night sending messages we shouldn’t ignore.

It sounds like the Heritage folks had a super turn out and donors and good weather for the pig roast.

GENEVA – TriCity Family Services’ Trivia Night, a fundraiser, will take place Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Batavia Moose Lodge, 1535 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia.

There will be a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m., with the trivia competition beginning at 7 p.m.

The event is hosted by The Friends of TriCity Family Services and the “Purple Power” team from Miscella Real Estate, whose members are the champions from the organization’s February trivia competition.

Teams of six to eight people (maximum 10) will battle other teams to see who has the greatest knowledge of all things trivial.

Each team will have its own table, and team members will answer trivia questions together.

The evening event also will include additional games and a 50/50 raffle.

The event is BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) and attendees are encouraged to bring food for their table to share. Teams also are asked to create a team name and theme.

The Cream of the Crop Photo Contest is a part of the Ag Invest program. Ag Invest helps Illinois farmers and agriculture professionals and is recognized as one of the largest agricultural-linked deposit programs in the U.S., states a news release.

Through the program, the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office partners with eligible lenders to offer farmers loans that can be used for operating costs, equipment purchases, construction-related expenses and livestock purchases, the release states.

“This contest is not only a chance for students to challenge their creativity with photography, but it is also a way for them to learn more about agriculture,” said llinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford in the release.

Each contestant submitted up to two agricultural photos, and members of the treasurer’s Ag Advisory Board selected the winning photos.

The winning photos will be displayed in the treasurer’s office tent at the 2014 Illinois State Fair in Springfield and the Du Quoin State Fair.

“I hope everyone who attends the fair will stop by my official tent to see the many aspects of agriculture captured by students from across the state as part of this contest,” said Rutherford in the release.

The photos also will be displayed on the treasurer’s website, www.treasurer.il.gov.

Engineers from Toyota and the company’s Lexus luxury division are producing masterpieces of the hybrid car. The latest Lexus is the ES 300h, introduced in late 2012 as a 2013 model. It joined the company hybrid lineup, including the 2010 Lexus CT (creative touring) 200h, the 2006 Toyota Camry and 2013 Avalon. It also joined the first mass market hybrid to be manufactured, the Toyota Prius. The Prius was introduced to the United States market in 2000.

Virtually unchanged for the 2014 model year, the ES 300h is a marvel when it comes to comfort, efficiency and economy.

During a week of test driving, the 3,660-pound frontwheel-drive sedan averaged 36 miles per gallon in usage of regular gasoline. The Environmental Protection Agency rates it at 40 mpg city, 39 mpg highway and 40 mpg combined. The EPA does not take aggressive driving into account. For the most part, the ES 300 hybrid was driven aggressively on the Chicago area’s interstate system. Two and sometimes three persons were aboard.

Efficiency is credited to a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine paired with a permanent magnetic electric drive motor.

A continuously variable transmission assists in economy.

The electric motor is used as a starter in the stop-start function of the car and operates the electric water pump and electric power steering.

Taking functions away from the gasoline engine obviously contributes to fuel economy.

There are four driving modes, and drivers can activate one or the other via fingertip-operated controls. The modes are EV, Eco, Normal or Sport. Eco means less air conditioning to cut fuel consumption in stop-and-go traffic. EV lets the vehicle operate by electric only at speeds of 23 mph or less. Normal shares battery and gas power. Sport means more use of throttle and gasoline. Efficiency can be

A 108-pound liquid-cooled battery pack is stored behind the rear seat and intrudes into trunk space. The trunk measures 12.1 cubic feet compared to 15.2 cubic feet in a non-hybrid ES 350. The gasoline-only ES 350 with the V6 engine also returns an EPA fuel usage of 21 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined city-highway.

Acceleration in the hybrid was stunning during the test week. The mating of gasoline and electric components was seamless. Although not a sport sedan, the ES 300h acted like one. Drivers new to this hybrid will be impressed with the power provided.

An independent suspension system relies on struts with coil springs, gas shocks and stabilizer bars front and rear.

An opposite winding of the coil springs adds to the stabilization of the vehicle, accord-

ing to Lexus engineers. Shocks are inside the coils with struts and arms as added suspension components. The suspension is tuned for a hard – but not a harsh – ride.

The ES 300 entry-level luxury sedans were introduced to the United States market in 1989. The luxuries have increased over the years, which is why, in 2014, they also include keyless remote entry, pushbutton stop and start, one-touch, open and close slide moonroof, settings for heated exterior mirrors, driver’s seat and steering wheel, rear window defogger with timer, LED fog lamps and a USB audio plug to go along with the multiple features in the eight-speaker audio system with a self-leveler system for sound. The 2014 ES incorporates the recently implemented Lexus spindle grille design in front. The LED fog lamps are new for 2014.

This ES hybrid is virtually the same vehicle that began sales in the U.S. as a 2013 model in late 2012.

On board is the usual array of power equipment,

such as door locks, express windows (up/down on all four with anti-pinch protection), front heated seats, tilt and slide moonroof, and exterior heated and foldable mirrors.

Standard fare, in addition to features mentioned above, includes sliding sun visors, scuff plates and air conditioning, eight-speaker sound system for AM-FM and satellite radio, MP3 and compact disc players, USB port and Bluetooth, remote lighted entry, cruise control, dual sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors, and a host of beverage and coin storage bins.

Standard safety equipment includes airbags (depends on who is counting but they are there for front, sides, overhead and driver’s knee), antilock braking system, stability and traction controls, automatic on and off headlights (dawn and dusk in case driver forgets to turn them on), intermittent wipers with mist cycle, brake force distribution, brake assist, child safety door locks, child seat anchors and tethers, and seatbelts with headrests for five.

The hybrid ES looks no different than the non-hybrid ES in the cabin or on the exterior.

Both have dual alloy exhausts protruding from the rear.

They ride on 17-inch alloy split five-spoke wheels, although 18-inchers are available.

In the U.S., hybrids comprise 4 percent of new-car purchases, but, with Lexus ES buyers, 25 percent of them choose the hybrid. This is a phenomenal statistic. Pricing of the hybrid is more than – but close to – that of a regular gasoline-powered V6 ES 350.

For 2014, the ES 350 starts at $37,850, including $910 delivery. The ES 300h starts at $40,260, including the $910 delivery.

It may be one writer’s prejudice, but the hybrid ES seems more quiet in the cabin than the well-insulated, non-hybrid ES. Both share an acoustic glass windshield.

Leg room in front and rear is ample, no matter which ES is chosen. There should be no discomfort for adults of normal stature (6 feet tall or so) riding on longer trips in this car.

Warranty coverage is four years or 50,000 miles, six years or 70,000 miles on the drivetrain, and eight years or 100,000 miles on the hybrid components.

There is so much electronic gadgetry on the ES for the sound, safety and informational systems that Lexus started a program that has a technician at each dealership to explain how it all works. There are 232 dealers nationwide.

Lexus and its parent company Toyota have had more than a decade to perfect the hybrid, beginning with the Prius, which passed the three million sales mark worldwide in June 2013. More than a million of those Prius sales were in the U.S. The hybrid synergy drive, which is the company name for its hybrid system, also is used on the Toyota Yaris and Highlander, as well as the Lexus RX 400h-450h, GS 450h and LS 600h.

McDonagh, Gleeson discuss ‘Calvary’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now When John Michael McDonagh walked onto the set of “Calvary,” the story of a good priest in contemporary Ireland whose life is threatened by an angry parishioner who long ago was a victim of pedophilia, it was only his second time directing a film.

When veteran actor Brendan Gleeson showed up to play the priest, wearing a formal cassock, it would mark his second collaboration with McDonagh.

Gleeson starred in McDonagh’s first film “The Guard.” McDonagh also wrote both films. He and Gleeson knew, even before that 2011 crime comedy was completed, that they would someday be working together again.

McDonagh and Gleeson visited Boston recently to chat about their cinematic relationship.

Ed Symkus: John, did you have Brendan in mind while you were writing “Calvary?”

John Michael McDonagh: Yes. The post-production on “The Guard” went on for quite a while. It went on so long that I wrote the script for “Calvary” in the meantime. I had Brendan in mind from the start. I sent him the first draft, and he wanted to do it, but he said there were elements there that he thought should be expanded upon to make the film more emotional.

Brendan Gleeson: The idea had germinated at the end of “The Guard” when we talked about the notion of a good man in the midst of all this [trouble], and it took root. It was an, “If I write it will you do it?” type of thing. It was very exciting for me. When the first draft came in, it was exquisite.

Symkus: Was it a different experience working together the second time?

Gleeson: We have different sensibilities in some

I love to work in a collaborative way. I was given a chance, with “The General” [1998] when [director] John Boorman invited me into the editing process. He was an incredible mentor for me.

Monitors had just come in, and he’d bring me around and say, “Look, the reason I’m asking you to come in from that side is for this reason.”

He was very inclusive, and I learned an awful lot.

When John and I started working together on “The Guard,” he was incredibly inclusive, as well.

Symkus: For both of you, are there any films you saw as a kid that made you think you might want to get into this business?

McDonagh: I’d watch a lot of movies as a kid. I think I was 15 when I saw “The King of Comedy.” It bombed when it was released in [Irish] cinemas, and it came on Channel

4 only about a month later.

I’d seen it and that’s when I thought, that’s what a good actor does, and that’s what a good director does. And I said what else have those two guys (Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese) done? So, that leads you through the great films of the ’70s, and that was my way in.

Gleeson: That was a world that was open to other people.

I remember being asked, when I was 4, what I wanted to be, and I said an actor, but I don’t think I knew what it meant.

Everybody remembers seeing “Bambi,” and being distraught at it. One of the big ones for me was “High Noon.”

And I remember when I was 17, I saw “Deliverance,” and that completely destroyed me.

Symkus: Getting back to “Calvary,” the film focuses on both good and bad points concerning the Church. It’s already opened in Ireland and England. Have you heard from people who think it’s pro-church and people who think it’s anti-church?

McDonagh: There’s been

a sort of silence from the Church, which I read to mean that they’re surprised that it’s not as anti-religion as maybe they were expecting.

But they’re likely conflicted about it because it’s bringing up that subject matter again [pedophilia] that they’d probably prefer to be swept under the carpet.

Gleeson: Some people would say we’re too easy on the Church. I think there was a general sense of relief, but also a sense that the movie is fair.

Symkus: John, you’ve spoken about completing a trilogy of films with Brendan. Have you got a status report on the third one?

McDonagh: I’ve got a lot of it in my mind, so I know the characters and the gist of the plot. I want there to be a crime story element, and I want it to be a little bit more intricate.

It’s called “The Lame Shall Enter First,” and I’ll probably write that next year. (Whispers) I stole that title from a Flannery O’Connor short story.

ADVICE Diabetic friend suffers close call miles away Dear Abby: My husband and I have a lake house and invited a couple (close friends) to join us for a few days. The husband has cancer and has been taking chemo.

We wanted them both to rest, as the wife is his only caregiver. We all thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to relax and enjoy nature.

The second night they were there, the husband went to bed very early and the three of us were visiting. At one point, my friend went into the kitchen. When she didn’t come out, I went to check on her and found her close to a diabetic coma.

It was very frightening. She hadn’t eaten much dinner and her blood sugar had crashed to a dangerous level. Fortunately, we knew what to do because my dad was diabetic.

We were an hour from the nearest hospital and had no cell reception. We did not know where her medication was. My friend

Erectile dysfunction drugs are all about timing Dear Doctor K: Is there a difference between the drugs that are available for erectile dysfunction?

Dear Reader: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a problem faced, to one degree or another, by many middle-aged and older men. Since sildenafil (Viagra) was launched in 1998, men have been turning to medication to help address this problem.

There are currently four ED drugs on the market: sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra) and avanafil (Stendra). These drugs all work the same way: They lead to increased production of a chemical that causes blood flow into the penis to rise. Inside the penis is a spongy tissue. Like a sponge, when it fills with fluid it swells. The increased blood flow into the penis causes the “sponge” to swell and the penis to stay erect long enough for intercourse.

The main difference among the drugs has to do with timing – how quickly they begin to work and how long their effects last.

How soon the drugs start working ranges from 15 to 60 minutes. The onset time determines how soon you can engage in intercourse.

Viagra and Levitra last about four to five hours (and sometimes up to 12 hours), while Stendra lasts about six. Cialis stays active in the body much longer than the other drugs; the window of opportunity ranges from 24 to 36 hours.

(That’s why it’s sometimes called the “weekend drug.”) Another version of Cialis, approved for daily use, keeps a steady supply of the drug in the bloodstream. It allows a man to be prepared for sex at any time.

Neither Viagra nor Levitra will work if you take either after a meal, as food blocks their absorption. Neither Cialis nor Stendra interacts with food this way.

Doctors usually offer sildenafil (Viagra) first. It’s been on the market longest, and its side effects and the medications and foods it interacts with are well known.

So far, the risks and side ef-

fects of all of these drugs seem to be roughly the same. So, if Viagra doesn’t work for you, you might have better luck with one of the others.

The ED drugs have brought happiness to many couples.

However, they don’t always work.

If a man has no sexual desire, or is on medicines that cause ED as a side effect, the ED drugs may not work. Severe blockage of the blood supply to the penis from atherosclerosis of the arteries leading to the penis also can interfere.

Men may also be anxious about their “performance.” Or they may have heart disease and be afraid that the physical exertion of sex will trigger heart problems (it rarely does). Or, finally, they may be anxious because they are having sex with someone other than their spouse.

Nevertheless, the drugs work more often than not. Your choice among them is something you should discuss with your doctor.

Teen lives on fast-food diet Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and considered to be a fast-food “junky.” I am a hairstylist and I love my work. My roommate is also a hairstylist. Both of us hate to cook, so we both eat at fast-food restaurants. Many times we eat all three of our meals while on the run.

I’m sorry to say that I have gained 9 pounds in the past year, and this trend absolutely must stop. I’ll probably continue eating at fastfood restaurants because I will not be cooking.

My mother has told me she was reading about a special “fast-food diet” somewhere in either the newspaper or a women’s magazine. She said it was still fast food, but it was healthier. I hope you will know about this, but I’m thinking it’s just wishful thinking on my mom’s part. – Lynne, Seattle, Wash.

Dear Lynne: Your mom was right, and it is not just wishful thinking. A registered dietician at New York Hospital in Manhattan developed a “fast-food diet” that includes three meals a day, plus a snack. The secret is that the fast food menu is low in fat and includes plenty of fruits and vegetables.

The program includes these helpful tips: 1. Avoid anything labeled “big,” “deluxe,” “supreme,” or “whopper.” Plain-Jane items are lower in calories.

Even “extra-crispy” has about 100 calories more than “regular.”

2. Stay away from fatty extras at the salad bar, such as bacon bits, taco chips, croutons. Fill up on carrots, tomatoes, dark-green vegetables; use low-calorie dressings.

3. Ask for broiled or grilled chicken fillet sandwiches instead of

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace fried chicken.

4. Select a roast beef sandwich over a hamburger – about 250 calories less.

5. Pass on egg and sausage for breakfast.

Better choices are dry cereal with low-fat milk or an apple bran muffin.

Now that fast-food chains are offering nutritious choices, you CAN have it your way.

A friend of mine said that all top bridge players have egos the size of planets. But they do not stop thinking. Even when things seem to be going well, they do not drop their guard.

This deal is a good example.

South is in four hearts. West leads the spade ace. What should happen after that?

South’s two-club rebid was New Minor Forcing. It announced at least game-invitational strength and asked North to describe his hand further. When North showed three-card heart support, South went for game in that suit. Yes, three no-trump would have been easy to make, with nine top tricks, but bidding isn’t always perfect.

Since East does not want West to shift, he should encourage spades enthusiastically by dropping his nine. West should then cash the spade king and lead a third round of the suit.

Let’s suppose East thoughtlessly switches to a club. South, who must play the trump suit without loss, should hope that East has the king and jack.

Declarer takes the fourth trick with dummy’s club queen, plays a heart to his 10, crosses back to dummy with a diamond, leads a heart to his queen, cashes the heart ace and claims.

However, an East who is thinking will realize that, based on the point-count, West is unlikely to have a high club.

Instead, East will lead his last spade, which promotes a trump trick for the defense.
