Enrollment planned for Sunset Dance Company

Doctor charged with sexual assault License already was suspended

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com A Geneva doctor charged with criminal sexual assault is being held in the Kane County Jail on $250,000 bond, officials said.

Dr. Mark G. Lewis, 55, was taken into custody at noon Tuesday at his Geneva medical practice, American Family Doctor, 2197 Blackberry Drive, Geneva, officials said, after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Lewis was charged with two

felonies – aggravated criminal sexual assault punishable, by six to 30 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000, and criminal sexual assault, punishable by four to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Lewis appeared in bond court later Tuesday after- Mark G. noon. He was Lewis told if he posts $25,000, or 10 percent of the bail, he is to have no contact with the victim, must refrain from consuming alcohol and must surrender his passport.

Lewis’ next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. July 25 before Kane County Circuit

Lewis, of the 2100 block of Blackberry Drive, Geneva, previously lived in the 0-99 block of Squire Lane, St. Charles, where police and Kane County prosecutors allege that he sexually assaulted the victim, a woman he knew, on Nov. 17, 2012.

State regulators temporarily suspended Lewis’ medical license June 26, alleging he had inappropriate sexual relations with several patients and inappropriately prescribed controlled substances to numerous people.

Regulators charged that his “actions constitute an immediate danger to the public” in suspending his license.

According to details of the

state regulatory charges, a St. Charles woman reported to police that she was sexually assaulted by Lewis at his house.

On June 9, the Illinois State Police Division of Forensic Services issued a lab report showing that semen identified in the woman’s anal swabs as part of a rape kit matched Lewis’s DNA profile, according to the charges.

Lewis denied having a sexual relationship with the woman in an interview with the regulatory department’s investigator, according to the charges.

Also according to the regulatory charges, a patient admitted that she engaged in a sexual relationship with Lew-

Lewis himself admitted to an investigator to having a sexual relationship with a former patient in his practice – and then he hired her to work in his office while he continued to prescribe controlled substances for her, according to the charges.

Lewis was scheduled to appear before an administrative law judge and the Medical Disciplinary Board on Wednesday for a hearing regarding his license suspension.

In an emailed statement, Cadence Health said it suspended Lewis’ privileges July 2 after learning of his license suspension.

Corn Boil bingo event coming up in July

Dance marathon to aid area teen programming

SUGAR GROVE – Bingo will take place during the Sugar Grove Corn Boil from 5 to 9 p.m.

July 25; from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

July 26; and from noon to 5 p.m.

The bingo tent will be behind John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St., Sugar Grove. The bingo is hosted by Sugar Grove Holiday in the Grove volunteers, Cole Cutters Crew and St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church.

Senior and handicapped parking is available in front of the school. Shuttles will be available to take visitors back and forth to Corn Boil areas.

Bingo cards are $1. Pots will be split 50-50 between the bingo winner and the hosting volunteer group. Participants must be older than 18 years old.

Parking is available on marked streets in the community. A shuttle will run during the day from the Sugar Grove Village Hall parking area to the park entrances.

ST. CHARLES – Teen Writers and Artists Project will host a 12-hour dance event from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 18 at Marquee Youth Stage on the lower level of the Charlestowne Mall, 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The event is intended to raise money to continue to fund programming offered to teens throughout the western suburbs, most notably in Batavia, St. Charles and Elgin.

In a news release, T-WAAP! identified itself as a “nonprofit organization dedicated to helping teens make their artistic dreams come true.”

“The organization is dedicated to mentoring teens, ages 13 to 19, in the arts through an online community, real world workshops, and connecting teens with mentoring opportunities from artists working professionally in that teen’s particular art form,” the release stated.

Woman’s cause of death unclear Police say body found on tracks still ‘an open case’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva police said Tuesday that they were still waiting for a definitive cause of death of a woman found dead on railroad tracks on the city’s east side Sunday.

“Basically, this is considered an open case at this point,” Geneva Police Cmdr.

Julie Nash said. “We really

don’t have anything at this point until we have a definitive cause of death.”

Police found the body of Kathleen M. King, 32, of Geneva, on the Union Pacific Railway tracks at 6:50 a.m.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said the office still was in the process of determining a preliminary cause of death.

“I cannot comment right now because the investigation is ongoing,” Russell said.

“We are working closely with Geneva police.”

King’s body on the tracks, police said in a statement.

She was found less than half a mile from where she lived in the 800 block of Oak Street.

King’s house was in foreclosure for the second time, according to Kane County court records. Bank of America began foreclosure proceedings Nov. 1, 2011, but the case was dismissed without prejudice, according to court records.

Bank of America sought foreclosure again Nov. 29, 2012, and the case was still pending. According to court records, the next court date was scheduled for July 21.

Delnor Hospital gets donated aquarium Elburn business presents tank to children’s center in Geneva

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Delnor Hospital has a new aquarium on its grounds, thanks to the efforts of some local businesses.

ZeroEdge Aquarium Corp. in Elburn and PetSmart, which has a location in Geneva, donated a 180-gallon aquarium in late June to the Laurie Children’s at Cadence Health Outpatient Center, located on Delnor’s campus in Geneva.

The ZeroEdge staff contributed the aquarium, filtration and the tank, and PetSmart provided the fish, lighting, other mechanics and the turquoise cabinet that the aquarium sits on, said Brett Perry, ZeroEdge president and owner.

Delnor also received a $5,000 check, Brian Travilla of

PetSmart wrote in an email.

He referred to the company’s message about animals as the reason for the hospital project.

“We believe pets make us better people,” a plaque on the aquarium cabinet said.

“That’s why we are creating more moments to be inspired by pets.”

Travilla reached out to ZeroEdge for the aquarium because he’s friends with one of Perry’s colleagues. The aquarium, which weighs 1,400 pounds when filled with water, took two weeks to construct.

This is the first time ZeroEdge has done such a collaboration with another company for a local cause, Perry said on Tuesday.

Breezing has been described as an activity where people try to get as close to a train as possible to feel the breeze. Salisbury said police are trying to avoid future breezing incidents and that no age is too young to learn about railroad safety.

“It is time to revisit the topic,” Block said.

Second Ward Alderman Don Cummings said there seems to be a difference between rural and urban coyotes in terms of how many more urban coyotes are aggressive and unafraid of people.

“These ought to be almost two different animals, the rural coyote and urban coyotes,” Cummings said. “We really need to set aside the rural coyotes, which don’t attack people as often, and look at the urban coyotes. ... They will attack people and are not afraid of people.”

Aldermen instructed city staff members to research the topic and return to a future Committee of the Whole meeting for consideration.

Urban areas are increasingly having reports of larger predators, such as a wandering black bear seen in areas including Rockford and Mount Morris. Jack Althoff of Geneva reported seeing a gray wolf July 1 at Fabyan Parkway and Route 31.

ayla Block stood in front of the Geneva Committee of the Whole recently and told of her fears regarding aggressive coyotes in the Fisher Farms and Westhaven subdivisions.

“My neighbor on two occasions this spring has been approached by coyotes while walking his dog,” Block said.

“The first time, they were aggressively trying to get his dog while he held it and yelled and kicked at them.”

Block said her dog was attacked by two coyotes in January. The dog survived, but she spent thousands of dollars on vet bills.

“I do not let my children ... walk the dog because of the coyotes,” Block said.

For years, the city’s stance – as recommended by wildlife experts – was for its citizens to coexist with coyotes. People are told not to feed them, to lock up their garbage, and not to let their dogs out alone, according to the city’s website.

And if approached by a coyote, instructions on the city’s website state, “Do not run away. Instead, yell, wave your arms, and/or throw an object at the animal.”

But Block and others told aldermen this approach does not work on coyotes that are no longer afraid of people. A neighbor, Brian Darnell, told aldermen of being stalked by two coyotes trying to get his dog, and Block urged them to do something more about the

But what can be done about aggressive coyotes?

Officials said police do not respond to coyote complaints and neither does Kane County Animal Control – unless the complaints involve actual attacks or rabies – because they are not trained for that.

Timm agreed with a solution proposed to Geneva officials by coyote trapper Rob Erickson of DeKalb – and that is to remove the problem of dominant coyotes and euthanize them.

“The only appropriate solution for dealing with an aggressive coyote is to remove it, for the safety of pets and people, especially children,” Timm said. “Removal is almost always going to be lethal because you can’t transplant it somewhere else.

We don’t know any method of reversing their behavior when coyotes are fearless of humans.”

But Lynsey White Dasher, director of Humane Wildlife Conflict Resolution for the Humane Society of the U.S., disagrees. She said the orga-

nization performs training sessions so people can do “hazing” effectively without resorting to trapping and euthanizing problem coyotes.

Hazing means to yell or make noise by banging on pots and pans.

“To say the only way to deal with problem coyotes is to kill them is not what we have experienced,” Dasher said of Erickson and Timm’s recommendations. “We have definitely found problem coyotes – that have attacked pets and stalked people – will stop their behavior through hazing. And they also teach [it] to their pups and the rest of the family group. We have found great success doing that.”

Dasher said the coyote behavior described in Geneva is most likely the result of people feeding the coyotes, and coyotes’ natural tendency to stalking behavior during mating season in January and February, and their protective behavior of pups in May and June.

Dasher disputed Timm and Erickson’s assertions that removing dominant coyotes causes the rest of the coy-

otes to back off from human contact.

She said they have had to come into communities six months after alpha coyotes have been euthanized to train people on correct methods of hazing because the problems with coyotes persisted.

Dasher said Geneva city officials have reached out to her regarding the coyote situation.

“The other problem with lethally removing coyotes this time of year is that orphaned pups will be left behind,” Dasher said. “Without parents to teach them not only how to hunt mice, rats, and other small mammals ... but also how to navigate urban landscapes while avoiding people, these pups are more likely to grow up as nuisance coyotes.”

Erickson said he spoke to the Geneva officials at the committee of the whole meeting on behalf of the residents who were troubled by the aggressive coyotes. He said he could not disagree more with Dasher’s assertions.

“The coyote can’t tell the difference between a rabbit

squealing and a toddler crying,” Erickson said. “It’s all groceries to them.”

Erickson said he uses cameras and resident reports of coyote sightings to determine which are the alpha or dominant coyotes. Once these are removed, the less dominant animals will back off from contact with people, he said.

“I’ve taken coyotes out where they have not seen one in five years,” Erickson said, disputing Dasher’s assertions that this method does not work.

Erickson said not all dominant coyotes have to be euthanized, as some can be relocated in rural areas – but most often it does not work.

Erickson said he euthanizes the coyotes himself, on the spot, if they’re caught in an unincorporated area. If not, he said he takes them back to his farm and puts them down as painlessly as possible, either with a shot, carbon dioxide or a lethal injection.

Erickson said he is working to create an online database of coyote sightings, which should be ready later this month.

“We did see a remarkable change in behavior within coyote communities,” Timm said. “But once the problem animals were removed by trapping, in many cases, the remaining coyotes were less aggressive and more wary.”

Timm said researchers do not know what causes the shift in coyote behavior – as coyotes normally are elusive and afraid of people.

“The process of habituation to people could be associating them with food or safety,” Timm said. “People might be intentionally or unintentionally feeding them.”

As for coyotes attacking pets, Timm said they likely are attacking small- and medium-sized dogs for food, but some attacks could be territorial.

“If people are walking dogs near coyotes that have dens, the attack is sometimes territorial. They don’t want the dog near their pups,” Timm said. “Most domestic dogs cannot defend themselves against a coyote. Even Rottweilers and German shepherds have been attacked and injured and other breeds we think of as quite able to defend themselves.”

Timm said small children are particularly at risk from aggressive coyotes.

He said there have been two confirmed deaths by coyotes, a 19-year-old woman in 2009 in one of the national parks in Nova Scotia by a pack of coyotes and a 3-yearold in Glendale, California, in 1981.

Timm said coyotes are opportunists and adapt their diet and behavior to whatever exists in their environment.

“The increased aggression problem seems to have been reported in suburban areas throughout the country,” Timm said. “We don’t have good behavioral studies to

Parade burglary probe continues

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva police are reviewing footage from security cameras in the city’s downtown area as part of their investigation into a burglary during the June 22 Swedish Days Parade, Detective Sgt. Michael Frieders said.

An estimated $808 in property – including clothes, cash and an iPad – was taken from an unsecured school bus during the parade, Frieders said. The bus, which was used to transport the South Shore Drill Team to the parade, was burglarized between 12:40 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. June 22, according to a Geneva police news release.

After dropping off the drill team at the parade’s starting point, the bus was driven to the Geneva Train Depot’s south permit lot. The bus was left there unattended and unsecured, the release stated.

Shortly after the parade’s 1 p.m. start time, a Geneva police officer found a purse and a backpack laying in the 1100 block of Cheever Avenue, which is south of Dryden Park and west of the permit lot. Police also received a call about other bags found on the 1600 block of Keim Circle, about a

“The witness described hearing something hit the pavement,” Frieders said. “It leads us to believe [the burglars] left the area in the car because they would have had to get away relatively quickly.”

Police found an ID and documentation in one of the bags that indicated the items belonged to someone on the drill team, Frieders said. Officers then headed to the south permit lot.

“When [police] got there to check on it, the bus door was standing open,” he said.

Geneva police continue to actively investigate the case.

He was born March 13, 1970, at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, Texas, the son of Dennis and Sharon (Hughes) Kullander. Growing up in an Air Force family, Erin moved often, spending memorable childhood years in Australia and Southern Illinois. He graduated from the University of North Dakota (BS,

Aeronautical Studies, 1993) where he met his true love, Sara. They were married Aug. 24, 1996, in Bismarck, North Dakota.

From an early age, Erin had a passion for flying. Throughout his professional career, he worked as a flight instructor, aerobatics instructor, weather modification pilot, first officer for GP Express, and for the last 19 years, United Airlines pilot, reaching his goal of captain.

Erin enjoyed watching sports (Go Minnesota Vikings! Go Minnesota Wild!), belonging to a fantasy football league, farming with his brother-in-law Paul, flying his Debonair, fishing with Grandpa Lloyd, and priceless hours playing with his son, Josh. Erin had a lasting impact on all those whose lives he touched and will be dearly missed by his family, friends and coworkers.

Attorney general corrects D-303 on FOIA Area woman found not to be ‘recurrent requester’

CHARLES – The Illinois Attorney General’s office issued an opinion recently that overturns St. Charles District 303’s designation of a local resident as a “recurrent requester” under the Freedom of Information Act. If individuals are recurrent requesters, the public body can take longer than five days to respond, according to a section of Illinois’ open records act.

A recurrent requester refers to a person who has submitted 50 requests in 12 months, 15 requests in a 30-day period or seven requests in a seven-day period, according to the law.

The district considered an October request from Kathy Kapusta of Campton Hills seeking eight financial records to be eight separate requests.

The attorney general’s office disagreed, issuing a nonbinding opinion and instructing the district to respond to Kapusta’s open records requests

according to the law.

Kapusta said the district’s lawyers should know the law regarding FOIA requests, especially when there is the precedence of earlier binding opinions.

“Their own legal counsel should know what exemptions are and are not allowed,” Kapusta said. “Taxpayers and citizens should not be writing letters back and forth with the agency for a FOIA response.”

District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney said the district was seeking some additional guidance from the attorney general.

“We responded the way we interpreted the law,” Blaney said. “The attorney general did not agree with [it], and we don’t have any further questions.”

The district had told Kapusta it would respond within 21 days, because she was a recurrent requester – a designation she disputed to the attorney general.

In a nonbinding opinion, Assistant Illinois Attorney General Matt Hartman of the Public Access Bureau wrote that District 303 did not provide history or authority to its assertion regarding a logical connection among the records sought.

“The district’s treatment of the FOIA request as constituting eight separate requests is patently inconsistent with its own interpretation of the act,” Hartman wrote. “Five subparts of the FOIA request pertain specifically to the St. Charles East Drill Team or its Boosters. There is clearly a ‘logical connection or relationship between the nature

A Campton Township woman is being sued for more than $50,000 on allegations that her online review of a DeKalb business was defamatory, according to a complaint filed last month in Kane County.

According to the document, Erika Gannon Hughes published a statement on July 14, 2013, about Friendly Farms on Yelp.com that harmed the business’ reputation and ability to attract and retain customers. “[Hughes] knew the publication was false or she lacked reasonable grounds to believe the statement was true,” the complaint states.

For the last 30 years, Friendly Farms, 15534 Somonauk Road, DeKalb, has furnished farm animals for petting zoos and pony rides for parties hosted by organizations and private citizens, according to

the document dated June 25.

In her review, the complaint states, Hughes makes several claims against Friendly Farms. She wrote that the animals are severely abused, are underfed, have lice and parasites, and are overdue to have their hooves trimmed, the document indicates.

The complaint states she also makes claims against the ownership, who she described as “cruel, heartless and shady.” She also reportedly asked that people don’t support the business.

“They are in it for the [money] and nothing else,” Hughes is accused of writing.

Steven Vidmar – identified in the complaint as the current, sole owner of Friendly Farms – is also participating in the case as a plaintiff. The complaint describes Hughes’ allegation against him as “libelous on its face.”

A case management conference is set for 9 a.m. Sept. 11.

How to make Larry Page’s part-time utopia work

By LEONID BERSHIDSKY Bloomberg News Google Chief Executive Officer Larry Page says we should all work fewer hours, and – like most people – I love the prospect.

“The idea that everyone needs to work frantically to meet people’s needs is just not true,” Page said at a recent event organized by the venture-capital firm Khosla Ventures. He was joining his voice to that of another business icon, Richard Branson, who has long championed part-time employment. What they propose, however, would require a complete overhaul of the way governments redistribute wealth: Having people work less would mean instituting some form of universal

basic income.

Page believes in “giving people things to do” because they tend to be unhappy otherwise, but he is convinced that satisfying humanity’s basic needs doesn’t require everyone to work all the time. Said the Google co-founder: “ ... I ask ... ‘Would you like an extra week of vacation?’

[People] raise their hands, 100 percent of the people. ‘Two weeks [of vacation], or a fourday work week?’ Everyone will raise their hand. ...”

Page seems to be unconcerned about people not being able to afford those shorter hours and longer vacations.

Page is worth $32.7 billion, after all, and Google pays its employees 25 percent more than the average market rate.

In effect, creating a mostly

part-time workforce is the solution long recommended by the New Economics Foundation, a London think tank devoted to creating a sustainable society and environment: Just cut the working hours to 21 hours a week, it says.

The thinking behind that is that if the shorter work week becomes law, workers will have the bargaining power to extract more pay from employers. When France cut the work week to 35 hours in 2000, that is more or less what happened, but few countries have France’s powerful unions, and the tide is running against them anyway. People at Google know at least one reason why: Sergey Brin, the search giant’s other co-founder, said at the same event as Page that he thought machines would

continue displacing human workers from a growing number of jobs.

NEF admits its proposal could work only if it was coupled with “more progressive taxation.” A state-guaranteed universal basic income has been tried before, in experiments during the 1970s. They worked surprisingly well, although back then, neither robots nor China were much of a threat to jobs. Derek Hum and Wayne Simpson revisited the data from these experiments in 1993. They found that receiving a minimum income from the state only made American men reduce their working hours by 6 percent a year, compared with 19 percent for their wives and 15 percent for unmarried women.

Last year, Swiss activists collected the requisite 100,000 signatures to hold a referendum on universal basic income of $2,800 per month for everyone in the small nation.

The vote has not been held yet, and the proposal will probably be defeated: Older, conservative voters rejected a higher minimum wage proposal in May, making it clear they disapprove of egalitarianism.

The idea is worth exploring, however, if only because it may prove more beneficial and possibly no costlier than current, cumbersome, fragmented, badly administered and nontransparent Social Security systems.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Debate about county salaries continued Tuesday when the Kane County Board approved a budget adjustment tied to new collective bargaining agreements for judicial employees.

Judith Brawka, chief judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit, recently completed negotiations with AFSCME Local 3966 and Teamsters Local 330.

A 3.7 percent yearly increase for four years was

agreed upon for union employees in the court services, judiciary and public defender bargaining units, she said.

Additionally, a 6 percent one-year raise was set for nonunion employees with the intent to include another 6 percent increase in the 2015 budget, Brawka said. She noted the 6 percent included a 2 percent raise the county already approved.

Multiple factors contributed to the increases, including the restructuring of the Juvenile Justice Center’s ed-

ucation program and a goal to bring salaries more in line with those offered by other counties, she said.

In some situations, Brawka said, experienced employees in Kane County are making less than what other counties offer as a starting rate for comparable positions. With a nearly 20 percent turnover rate and training costs, she said, “We’re throwing away money.”

But board member Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, who in April voted against awarding

5 percent raises to nine county directors, said he couldn’t agree with a 14.8 percent increase over four years and a 12 percent increase over two years.

The raises are, he said, “too much of an increase.”

Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, disagreed.

“If you don’t pay them, they won’t stay,” he said.

Board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, said the situation is similar to that in the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, which has made

progress in making salaries more competitive.

Board member Jesse Vazquez, D-Aurora, also noted his support but said he is concerned about the longterm liability.

“It’s not just the one year,” he said.

According to agenda documents, the budgetary impact is about $377,000. In a separate resolution, a revenue adjustment of nearly $600,000 was made due to an allocation by the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.

Response to marketing signs mixed Elburn officials not opposed to signs in Blackberry Creek, but questions remain

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A home builder’s request to add marketing signs near the Blackberry Creek community drew a mixed reaction Monday from Elburn Village Board members at a community of the whole meeting.

Citing a provision in the original annexation, Orleans Homes is seeking to put 20-by10-foot, double-faced marketing signs along both Keslinger and Hughes roads. Erin Willrett, Elburn’s village administrator, said staff was opposed to that. She said there are concerns, and that the original intent was for such signs to be

controlled by original developer B&B Enterprises, which pulled out of the area years ago.

Rick Zirk, the director of land acquisitions for Orleans Homes, was at Monday’s meeting. While Willrett cited concerns about the number of builders and developers wanting space on such a sign, Zirk said there could be criteria set that could determine who could have space on such a sign, based on how many lots were owned.

He said it could be viewed as “a marquee sign at a shopping center,” in which there are smaller signs under a main sign.

mentioned that “as you can imagine, directing prospective buyers to the site is critical to the project’s success.”

There would be space for four or eight builders “to equally place their company name on the sign.” The letter suggested

that there was “a clear right to install a sign.”

Jeff Walter, an Elburn trustee and a Blackberry Creek resident, said he was “not opposed to the sign.” He said those in Blackberry Creek want the undeveloped lots in the community to be sold. But he said Orleans Homes can’t say it has declaratory rights that B&B had.

And he said there would be concern about whether others wanted to be on the sign. Also, Walter said if such a sign were to be built, there should be a fee built in for its eventual teardown.

Willrett maintained that the agreement was meant for one developer, B&B. Another

trustee, Bill Grabarek, agreed with the idea that the signs originally were intended for when B&B was in the area and that when the agreement was created, those involved “never would have imagined this was going to happen,” meaning the economic conditions that caused the housing market to be greatly diminished.

Willrett said if trustees wanted staff to go forward with the idea, a lot of work would need to be done. Village President Dave Anderson suggested trustees provide some direction and questions for Willrett.

“We’ve got a lot more questions than we have answers,” Anderson said.

SAO PAULO – Louis van Gaal has some advice for Dutch parents: let your kids stay up late to watch the Netherlands-Argentina World Cup semifinal match today – they won’t sleep even if you send them to bed.

The match at Sao Paulo’s Itaquerao Stadium doesn’t start until 10 p.m. Dutch time – when most young children are usually already sound asleep.

But Van Gaal, a former physical education teacher with a reputation as a tough disciplinarian, believes parents should bend their usual bedtime rules.

Decompressing from a busy 7-on-7 football event at Aurora Christian Tuesday night, Campbell planned to opt for a chicken breast, protein shake and perhaps some cereal – pending the contents of the family cupboard.

Only 12 Cadets participated in games against Kaneland, Metea Valley and the host Eagles, including Campbell, a running back and defensive back eager to boost his reserve and special teams role from 2013.

“Yeah, it is great conditioning,” Campbell said. “We had a couple subs here and there with all the guys vacationing and stuff. I feel like I’m in condition from all the camps, and this helps, too, because I might be going both ways next year.”

Most coaches at 7-on-7s statewide admit they’ve barely scratched the surface of their depth charts at this point in the offseason.

With the first fall practice scheduled for Aug. 11, there’s certainly no shame.

On Tuesday, about the only thing in midseason form was the pocket of fans dressed in long sleeves and jeans to combat a cool breeze. Even an announcement seeking the owner of a white plumbing truck blocking a section of the parking lot sounded without the aid of a public address system.

The Eagles will play seven

pool play games Friday – facing foes from Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma – before those results determine their seeding in Saturday’s tournament.

Schools from Indiana and Kansas also will compete among 32 teams.

“It’s a pretty cool event,” first-year Eagles coach Dave Beebe said. “Our kids, they really get a lot out of it.”

“They got a lot of reps against tremendous competition,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “I was happy with how we did.”

He hopes to repeat that last part in a little more than three months. The Cadets return to Aurora Christian in Week 8 for an 11-on-11 competition that counts toward the standings, not just stamina.

The St. Charles Swim Team hopes a little internal competition this weekend spurs club members on to big things as the summer unfolds.

The SCST is staging a “50 skins competition” at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Swanson Pool at Pottawatomie Park, part of the club’s “Endless Summer” meet Saturday and Sunday.

The event is a 50-meter freestyle swim-off with 96 swimmers seeking to be the fastest 50-meter freestyle in the bunch.

Beth Wilson, the team’s publicity coordinator, said swimmers will attempt to land among the fastest 16, “then the round of eight, and so on until the champion wins it all.”

“Swimming is such an enormous part of our community, especially with two pools at the high schools,” Wilson said. “It’s such an enormous team. It covers so many age groups and so many family members.”

According to Wilson, 11 swimmers from the program committed to swim collegiately within the past year.

The timing of this weekend’s event makes it a great tuneup.

“We’re about ready to go into championship season so this is the last regular seasons swim for all age groups,” Wilson said. “Everyone is fighting to get their regional, state or Junior Olympic times.”

The team has more than 350 competitors, and more than half of them have at least one sibling in the program. Swimmers range from age 7 through high school seniors.

Admission this weekend will cost $5. Wilson projects

a dramatic resolution to the event.

“Sometimes you get a crazy 12 year old that will make it to the end,” Wilson said. “It ends up being a swim-off between top names in swimming in St. Charles at the very end.”

Jonathan Cabel and Tim Lewarchick are the program’s co-head coaches.

Seberger settling in: Geneva girls basketball product Morgan Seberger is preparing to begin her college basketball career at Division-II Southern Indiana.

Seberger made a late decision to attend USI and spent time on the Screaming Eagles’ campus in Evansville with her new teammates last month.

“We are excited to welcome Morgan to our USI family,” USI coach Rick Stein said in a news release. “Morgan is a tall and long guard that brings more versatility to our backcourt. She is an outstanding student-athlete that can extend the defense from behind the three-point line and is a proven winner who led her team to the final four of the Class 4A state tournament in Illinois.”

Seberger averaged 12.6 points and 5.1 rebounds last season for a Vikings team that finished in fourth place in Class 4A.

“It’s tougher on us, because we just don’t have a ton of kids. We’ve got a few kids that will be going both ways, where most schools down there, they don’t. They have offensive and defensive units,” Beebe said. “But we enjoy the challenge. That’s fine with us. With the Arkansas heat, it can pose a problem. … As a staff, we’ve got to be smart about how we take care of the kids and their bodies, but it’s fun.”

Regardless of a 7-on-7’s locale, the objective doesn’t change – harness fundamentals and timing so everything runs and looks as smoothly as possible once the season starts.

Among the Chronicle-area teams on hand Tuesday, Aurora Christian enters with a head start by returning Austin Bray at quarterback. Bray helped the Eagles to a Class 3A semifinal in 2013 as the program fell short of a state championship three-peat.

Marmion, like Kaneland a returning playoff qualifier, graduated its quarterback, as well, and braces for a new candidate to take the reins.

In the first six innings Hampshire was unable to capitalize on the six walks and five hits St. Charles starting pitcher Alex Wiedemann allowed. The St. Charles North junior, with the aid of his defense, wiggled out of the jams.

Hamsphire started its last at-bat trailing, 8-1. By the time the ninth batter came to the plate, Hampshire scored three runs on five hits and three errors against relief pitcher Drew Underwager to narrow St. Charles’ lead to 8-4. With two outs and the bases loaded, center fielder Jim Welzien hit a grounder to shortstop Luke Corcoran and was thrown out at first on a close play to preserve the win for St. Charles.

“Anything I hit to the fence in the summer league, I’m expecting a triple out of the box,” Drawant said.

“That’s about as well as they have hit the ball all season,” said Moriarty. “Having your 3 and 4 guys hitting with runners on base ahead of them obviously helps.”

Wiedemann, who pitched into the sixth inning, earned the win. Hampshire’s starting pitcher, Andrew Brown, took the loss.

“I thought Alex Wiedemann was around the zone all day,” Moriarty said. “It was just a tight zone. I didn’t think he was wild by any stretch of the imagination. He was all over the plate. He just didn’t get some calls.”

Brown joins Cougars from Double-A KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA –The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Cubs, announced Tuesday that outfielder Kevin Brown has joined the Cougars from Double-A Tennessee while outfielder Yasiel Balaguert has been placed on the disabled list with a foot injury.

the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players as the Cougars opened a series at the Quad Cities River Bandits.

Brown (22nd round draft pick, 2013) joins the Cougars via Double-A Tennessee.

Brown played in six games, all in left field, for the Smokies and batted .333. Prior to that, Brown played in 15 games with Short-A Boise, batting .293. Brown played collegiate-

Overview: Matt Forte in 2013 proved he was the perfect back for Marc Trestman’s offense, accounting for almost one-third of the team’s 6,109 total yards and carrying the ball at least 20 times in all eight of its victories in his best season to date. Trestman’s QB-friendly system and a pair of supersized receivers grabbed many of the headlines on offense, but Forte was the unit’s tone setter and arguably most valuable player.

The Bears figure to have at least one new face alongside Forte in the running back room, fourth-rounder Ka’Deem Carey, the first back drafted by the Bears since Forte, in 2008. Along with incumbent Michael Ford, three players – journeyman Shaun Draughn and a pair of undrafted rookies, Jordan Lynch and Senorise Perry – will battle for one additional backfield vacancy.

After signing a two-year deal in December, fullback Tony Fiammetta is likely in the club’s 2014 plans. He was used sparingly in his first season – about 20 percent of the team’s snaps – but Fiammetta is a tough blocker who can function as an occasional security valve as a receiver. Unlike last summer when Harvey Unga was in camp, Fiammetta is the only fullback – although one can never truly rule out Unga’s return to Bourbonnais.

Position battle: The Bears would love a back to prove he’s capable of lightening the load of Forte, who has racked up a lot of mileage in his first six seasons. That was the plan with Michael Bush last year, but the veteran’s

The most important criteria the Bears will be evaluating in Bourbannais is dependability in the passing game. It’s an area that has become almost impossible to gauge in the offseason because of a lack of hitting, forcing coaches to evaluate technique and fundamentals in May and June before trying to measure players’ willingness and physicality as blockers in July and August.

Outside of Forte, only Draughn has been asked to block and catch at this level.

Despite Bush’s struggles, Ford couldn’t get on the field, largely because he couldn’t be counted on in those areas.

The good news for all of the candidates in the backup battle is that the Bears aren’t

afraid to throw a young guy whom they trust into the fire.

The key is developing that trust.

Carey impressed this offseason with his ability to get north and south quickly.

Ford, in addition to holding a slight advantage because of his knowledge of the offense, is also in the mix to handle return responsibilities. Lynch looked natural catching on the move, but he has never had the task of blocking blitzing linebackers before, something all the others have at some point during their football lives. Perry has rare speed and suddenness, but he struggled a bit with his hands during OTAs and minicamp.

Fiammetta’s battle to make the roster could become interesting if the Bears

want to keep extra tight ends or offensive tackles that could play his blocking role.

Contract situations (information via Spotrac): The Bears are in an enviable situation regarding the salary cap in the backfield at a position that has become increasingly devalued. Forte has a base salary of just less than $6 million this year, a terrific value for one of the NFL’s few do-everything tailbacks.

Entering the third year of a four-year, $30 million deal, Forte could be focused on another strong showing perhaps leading to a contract extension, although his age – 29 in December – and Carey’s presence wouldn’t seem to work in his favor.

Carey, Draughn and Ford combined are slated to earn less than $1.5 million in 2014;

Lynch and Perry are guaranteed nothing moving forward unless they earn a spot on the 53-man roster or practice squad.

Keep an eye on: Perry. The 6-foot-0, 206-pound undrafted rookie out of Louisville understandably flew under the radar because of higher-profile rookies like Carey and Lynch, but he possesses a unique trait in this competition: speed and explosion.

Perry’s game needs refining, however. In addition to struggling at times catching balls, he must improve as a route runner, and his blocking abilities are an unknown heading to camp. But the Bears showed last offseason, when Ford earned a spot on the 53-man roster, that undrafted free agents can stick at this position.

Gasol, Anthony remain options

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com The patience of the Bulls front office continued to be tested Tuesday, as the indecision of Carmelo Anthony still seems to be messing with even Plan B from being pursued.

According to a source, the Bulls feel like if Anthony goes elsewhere, they are one of the leading candidates to land free-agent big man Pau Gasol … unless that elsewhere just so happens to be the Lakers, which in turn could start the dominoes falling and Gasol also staying with his former team in Los Angeles.

“It’s frustrating for [the front office], but it’s free agency,” the source said.

That’s one way to describe it.

Besides the Bulls, Gasol was being targeted by Oklahoma City, Miami, the Lakers, San Antonio and the New York Knicks.

The Thunder and the Bulls, however, were the two teams that impressed Gasol the most, at least until Tuesday when reports from a Monday meeting between Gasol and Thunder coach Scott Brooks resulted in Oklahoma City feeling like the money wouldn’t work with Gasol.

Because of cap space, the

Thunder are limited to near the $5 million mark in what they can offer.

The Bulls will have a bit more financial freedom for the 34-year-old, depending on the negotiations with Nikola Mirotic, and could come closer to the $7- to $9-million range.

The Bulls met with Gasol in Los Angeles on Thursday, but it was his meetings and talks with All-Star center Joakim Noah that has really impressed Gasol, said the source.

Not only would Gasol walk onto a playoff-caliber team, but a team that plays an unselfish style of basketball that

he likes, as well as having a starting job. During the talks with Gasol, the Spaniard revealed his desire to start wherever he goes, and while Taj Gibson has been focusing on moving from a Sixth Man of the Year Award second-place finisher last season to a starter, well, Gibson has always maintained that he’ll do “whatever is best for the team.”

Notes: The Bulls announced their Summer League roster Tuesday, highlighted by firstround pick Doug McDermott and last year’s first-round draft choice Tony Snell. Cameron Bairstow, who was selected in the second round in the

June draft, will also have a lot of eyes on him.

Former Illinois guard Brandon Paul will also be on the roster.

Adrian Griffin will again be the acting head coach, with Andy Greer, Ed Pinckney, Mike Wilhelm and Coby Karl the assistants.

The first game is set for Saturday, as they take on the Clippers at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Longtime athletic trainer Fred Tedeschi left the organization, accepting a position at Oregon State. Assistant trainer Jeff Tanaka will oversee those duties during Summer League.

He has heard all the names linked to the Fire by rumors, speculation or plain wishful thinking. So with the summer transfer window opening Tuesday, Segares won’t be paying too much attention to who’s connected to the Fire until they actually arrive at Toyota Park.

“It’s been like that for many years now,” Segares said.

“There’s a lot of rumors. People are always going to talk about it.”

This year, there has been some chatter that former Fire star DaMarcus Beasley, U.S. World Cup hero Jermaine Jones or Brazilian attacker Robinho would sign with a

Fire team that needs some sort of boost. Coach Frank Yallop said bringing in a designated player is ‘‘one of the thoughts,” although he didn’t provide names.

But that doesn’t mean the Fire, who visit the Atlanta Silverbacks for a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal today, will sign a player for the sake of doing it.

They want the fit to be right, both in the short term and long term, and not bring in a player just to placate fans or generate post-World Cup buzz.

“I just had a good conversation [Monday] for an hour with [Fire chairman] Andrew [Hauptman], and he’s up for anything,” Yallop said. “He said, ‘I’m ready to do what you think is right for this club.’ So we are trying to make some good moves, but it’s got to be the right positions and in the

right spots and the right character.”

The Fire need to make some moves. Blackhawks assistant coach Jamie Kompon is leaving the team to become the head coach and general manager of the Portland Winterhawks, a junior team in the Western Hockey League, according to a source.

K o m p o n Jamie h a s b e e n a Kompon Hawks assistant for the past two seasons, replacing Mike Haviland after spending six seasons on the Los Angeles Kings staff. Before that, he spent nine years with the Blues, working on Joel Quenneville’s staff alongside current Hawks assistant Mike Kitchen. Kompon won back-to-

back Stanley Cups, with the Kings in 2012 and the Hawks in 2013.

One of Kompon’s primary responsibilities with the Hawks was coaching the power play, which improved to 10th in the league this past season after placing 19th in his first season. The Hawks scored on 12-of-57 power plays (21.1 percent) in the playoffs.

Kompon’s departure means the Hawks will open the season with a half-new coaching staff. They just added goaltending coach Jimmy Waite – brother of longtime goalie coach Stephane Waite – to the staff this week after firing Steve Weeks after one season.

The Winterhawks, who have been in the WHL final in each of the past four seasons – winning in 2013 – have scheduled a news conference for this afternoon.

To hike all 2,050 miles of the rough and immature Appalachian Trail in 1955, she hand-sewed a yard of denim to form a drawstring sack and filled it with Band-Aids, bouillon cubes, raisins and peanuts, Vienna Sausage, powdered milk, bobby pins, iodine, a Swiss Army knife, flashlight, mints and a pen and small notebook.

She knew what she needed because she spent nights in the woods ahead of time as part of her preparation.

A trend in hiking today is the adoption of a minimalist tact, more reliant on ingenuity, fitness and will than technical equipment and dehydrated soups.

“Grandma Gatewood’s Walk” by Ben Montgomery is a feat of reporting, storytelling and fine writing.

It’s a first-rate summer read that will be hard to forget because Gatewood is not likely to be easily forgotten.

Gatewood told no one, including her 11 grown children, of the plan she worked on for more than two years.

In fact, she had to abort her first attempt after getting lost in Maine. The following spring, girded by resolved, she set off again.

Her 17-pound sack, $200, a love of walking and sheer determination enabled the five-month solo trek from Georgia to the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine.

At the time, she was a hale 67 years old and finally rid of a violent and physically abusive husband.

She slung the sack over her shoulder, tied on her first of seven pairs of canvas Keds and set forth. She ignored naysayers, ageists and calamity.

What Grandma Gatewood, as she came to be known, didn’t bring with her is another marvel. No

Journalist Ben Montgomery’s account of this 5-foot-2 inspiration is remarkably thorough. The rich and abundant detail that demonstrates the pathos, irony

and joys in Gatewood’s life makes this a classic page-turner.

Montgomery interviewed Gatewood’s four surviving children, read her journals, spoke with other hikers and walked in her footsteps.

And, like “Wild,” Cheryl Strayed’s account of her fraught Pacific Crest Trail solo hike, he uses Gatewood’s own words to help tell the dramatic story.

Gatewood became a national celebrity, hounded by reporters and interviewed numerous times for newspapers, magazines and on television. Groucho Marx even had her on his show.

She was always game, pleasant and accommodating.

Despite the attention and her celebrity, Gatewood retained her secrets. And she was good at it. Part of Montgomery’s hardest work was to attempt to get into her head and figure out why she put herself through the ordeals she endured. She had a slew of answers for reporters, but none of them quite says it all.

One of the reasons the book stays with you long after you read the last few delicious pages is that you, too, spend time thinking about this remarkable, determined woman who was as much like Thoreau as she was the Old Woman in the Shoe.

Montgomery has secrets, too. This book takes an amazing turn in the final 50 or 60 pages. As much as I’d like to let readers in on the secret, I want to honor Montgomery’s tactics and decisions.

If you know what I know, you would go to your nearest bookstore and demand the book now. Gatewood is an environmental hero for the ages.

Her love of walking, of nature and solitude joins with Thoreau, John Muir, Wordsworth and Dickens, among others, to extol the essentials of a good and true humanity.

Red or brown urine should be checked out by doctor Dear Doctor K: I sometimes have dark, strong-smelling urine.

Should I be concerned?

Dear Reader: Given that this happens only occasionally, it probably is not something to worry about. But before reassuring you, I would need answers to some questions: • By dark, do you mean dark yellow? Or is your urine brown or red?

If your urine is just a dark yellow color at times, especially when you don’t drink enough fluids, then you don’t need to worry. Dark yellow urine is a sign of dehydration. Your urine is dark because your kidneys are doing what they are supposed to do when you are dehydrated: conserving water by making less urine. If this is the case, drink more water – eight 8-ounce glasses each day.

Certain foods and medicines can change urine color and make it smell. Eating asparagus is a good example of a food that causes your urine to take on a distinct odor. Eating beets can turn your urine red and make you worry that you might have blood in your urine. (We doctors have manufactured a medical term for

There are times when a change in the color or smell of your urine warrants a visit to your doctor. For example, see your doctor if your urine is ever red (unless you’ve eaten beets in the past 24 to 48 hours) or brown.

This could be a sign of something serious, like a bladder, kidney, blood or liver problem.

• Does it hurt when you urinate? Do you have pain high up on one (or both) sides of your back, weakness, fatigue or fever?

If so, you should see your doctor. You could be having intermittent bacterial infections of your urinary tract. Usually, such infections don’t turn urine dark – unless they cause temporary bleeding – but they can. Urinary tract infections often cause pain when you urinate. Other symptoms include having to urinate often and feeling a pressure to urinate.

• Have the whites of your eyes turned yellow?

If so, you could be having liver trouble. When the liver is not working properly, increased amounts of a dark pigment (bilirubin) appear in the blood and in the urine. Your doctor can check your liver function with blood tests.

If you’re concerned, collect a fresh urine sample when you have dark urine. Any kind of container is OK. Bring the urine sample to the doctor within a few hours after collecting it. The doctor will be able to test the urine for blood cells (looking for both bleeding and infection).

The urine also can be tested to see if the kidneys are conserving water, as they do when you get dehydrated.

Finally, the urine can be tested for chemicals that turn the urine dark, such as bilirubin or myoglobin. To test for a bacterial infection, it’s best to provide a fresh urine sample collected in a sterile container at the doctor’s office.

Wife’s world collapses over husband’s affair Dr. Wallace: My world collapsed around me last year when one morning at breakfast my husband announced that he was in love with a co-worker and they had already set up an apartment together and he was going to be taking his things that day and filing for divorce.

I have only recently learned to cope with the situation, and I now have a job that will help us survive. This has been very difficult for my teenage son and daughter, but they are adjusting to the changes in our lives and have been totally supportive of me.

I remember reading your column some time ago when you had suggestions from a psychologist about how to help the children of a divorce survive this life-changing situation. Could you reprint the information?

Dear Nameless: After a bit of research, I found the column you requested.

Dr. Debra Huntly, a professor of psychology at Argosy University, says that children, regardless of their age, will have more difficulty adjusting after a divorce if there was, and still is, conflict between the parents. Dr. Huntly provides 10 tips from a child’s perspective on how a divorcing, or already divorced couple, can help ease their children’s pain during or after the event: 1. Don’t put me in the middle. If you need to talk to each other, please do it yourself.

2. Don’t make me take sides. You may not have a husband/wife anymore, but I still have a mom/dad. When pos-

3. Unless there is an abusive situation, allow me to have access to both parents.

4. The better you can get along with each other, the better I will be able to cope with the divorce.

5. Ask me how I’m doing and what I need.

6. Try to keep everything else in my life the same, if possible. It is stressful enough to lose a parent to divorce, but even tougher to move to a different school, a new neighborhood and a new home.

7. Remember that I am your child. Although you have gone through a divorce, my role is not to replace your spouse or be a friend. Continue to treat me as your child.

8. If you need to talk to somebody about what you are going through, find a friend or a therapist.

9. No matter what my age is, this is still a loss for me. I may show my grief in many different ways, including anger, depression, anxiety or acting-out behavior.

Please get me help if I am having difficulty.

10. I long for continuity, routine and tradition.

Although our family has changed, please maintain as many traditions and routines as possible.

South’s two-diamond rebid was fourth-suit game-forcing.

When North bid four hearts, he showed a minimum opening bid. With extras he would have control-bid (cue-bid) four clubs.

South signed off in six no-trump to protect his diamond holding, expecting North’s values to be in his long suits.

Declarer starts with 10 top tricks: two spades, five hearts, one diamond and two clubs. His plan should be to win four club tricks – but how?

The club nine in South’s hand makes getting four tricks a near-certainty. After winning the first trick with his spade ace, declarer should play a club to dummy’s ace, then return a low club and cover East’s eight with his nine.

Here, that ends South’s problems. But if his nine were to lose to the 10, the suit would be splitting 3-2 and the contract would be home. Finally, if East shows out on the second round of clubs, declarer wins with his king and leads back through West’s queen up to North’s jack.

Note that six hearts can be made by taking the same safety-play.

A prince, a princess and a pea ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ performances headed to Kaneland this week

MAPLE PARK – When Alec Kovach first was looking to try out for a play, he was nervous. Just in case he was thinking of changing his mind, a friend took his car keys to prevent escape.

It turns out he was a natural, and he said he has been cast in a lead role in just about every performance in which he’s participated. The Kaneland graduate is playing Dauntless, the prince, in this summer’s Kaneland Arts Initiative performance of “Once Upon a Mattress,” which opens this weekend.

Performances take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday, then again at 7 p.m. July 18 and 19 and at 2 p.m. July 20 in the Kaneland High School auditorium at 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. To purchase tickets, visit www. kanelandartsinitiative.org.
