KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – If the Cubs win the World Series and plan a celebratory parade, odds are good that officials in Elburn would have considered some options for accommodating those who want to ride Metra trains to get to such an event.

Elburn Trustee Jeff Walter introduced the Metra topic Monday night at the Elburn Village Board meeting. Walter wanted to talk about “lessons learned” from last month’s controversy, when Elburn’s Metra lot was filled by 7 a.m., and many parked in

illegal spaces and were subsequently ticketed as trains were packed with many wanting to be part of the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup championship celebration in Chicago.

Walter and other officials said they heard from those who were upset over the situation. Commuters were inconvenienced.

Celebrants said they didn’t know what else to do.

Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith on Monday said the situation wasn’t as bad two years ago, when the Hawks also had such a celebration. He said when so many people parked illegally, there was no other option but to ticket them.

“Laws are there for people to abide by,” Smith said.

Walter said he understood that, but he wanted to plan for the future. Smith asked whether the police should be responsible for shuttle buses and other options. Village President Dave Anderson, to some laughs, said when the Cubs when the pennant, a pedestrian bridge likely would be in place and “we probably should talk to the Lions Club. … But the rules are the rules.”

Smith said officials could discuss shuttle buses with “places with bigger parking lots.” Anderson said Elburn Lions Park, which is at 500 Filmore St., could be walkable in such a situation.

According to Mapquest, the distance between the locations is 1.3 miles.

As far as making sure those who pay for their spaces would be assured spots, Smith said there could be parking assigned and designated for such customers. Elburn has 600 legal parking spaces in the Metra lot.

There were no solid answers provided Monday, but Walter said it was important to have such discussions.

“As long as we’ve learned some lessons. … I’m looking at this and trying to learn from this,” Walter said.

Former Sugar Grove bank employee must repay $94K

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A former employee at American Heartland Bank in Sugar Grove, who pleaded guilty to the theft of $94,000, was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 48 months of probation.

She also has to repay the money over five years.

Kane County Circuit Judge Clint Hull ordered the sentence and restitution for Alyson Ruggie, 31, of Plano, on June 30.

She had been indicted on three felony charges of theft and faced three to seven years in prison on each charge, plus fines, if convicted.

According to Hull’s order, the loss to American Heartland Bank & Trust was $25,000, and the loss to its insurer, Kansas Bankers

Surety, was $69,000.

Ruggie has to surrender her personal accounts of $10,773.56 and $4,500 of her cash bond toward settling the restitution, under the terms of Alyson Ruggie h e r s e n tence. She is to pay $1,312.44 by the last day of each month to the Kane County circuit clerk for 60 months, according to Hull’s order. She also has to pay an additional $3,330 in fines and fees to the court.

Hull stipulated that restitution comes before paying the court.

Ruggie also must serve 90 days in jail, but Hull will allow her to do that in

three 30-day installments, the first to be served Sept. 1, 2016, to Oct. 1, 2016.

The thefts occurred between Jan 1, 2010, and Jan. 24, 2014, according to court records.

The money was discovered missing after an ex-

ternal audit, Sugar Grove Police Chief Patrick Rollins had said at the time of Ruggie’s arrest last year.

Bank officials suspected the money was missing because of an employee theft and called police to investigate, Rollins had said.

LOCAL NEWS Incentive agreement eyed for Batavia company

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council is eyeing giving an incentive to a manufacturing company that is designed to help the city’s electric utility.

AGS Technology Inc. manufactures auto parts from recycled plastic materials. The company relocated from Des Plaines to its current facility at 951 Douglas Road in Batavia.

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting unanimously recommended approval of the incentive agreement, which will now go to the full City Council for review.

Batavia aldermen in February 2014 approved a letter of intent to offer an incentive agreement. As part of the 93-month incentive agreement, the company will receive discount credits on its monthly billings. That includes two years of 30 percent discounts, two years and nine months of 25 percent discounts and three years of 15 percent discounts.

AGS began its move to the city in early 2010, but full production didn’t begin until January 2015. The discounts are tied to the amount of electric power AGS uses.

If the electric power usage drops below 100,000 kilowatt-hours, there will be a 50 percent reduction of the

discount and below 50,000 kilowatt-hours, a 100 percent reduction of the discount, according to the agreement.

The agreement will expire in March 2023.

“They have been very successful and have used a great deal of electricity,” 1st Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said.

O’Brien said the city also benefits from having an occupied building and that jobs are being created in Batavia.

AGS’ power consumption averages 175,000 kilowatt-hours a month, City Administrator Bill McGrath said.

“This is a win-win for the city of Batavia,” McGrath said.

SHOW TIME AT KANELAND

Summer musical, ‘Big,’ to open this weekend

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Steve Hommowun sat with other participants in the Kaneland High School auditorium, as a rehearsal for Kaneland Arts Initiative’s summer musical, “Big,” wrapped up on stage.

Hommowun, 50, recalled how he was “roped into” his first summer performance a few years ago at Kaneland by Diane McFarlin, the Kaneland High School assistant principal and now the artistic director for KAI. A production of “Music Man” needed a tenor for a barbershop quartet.

Hommowun answered the call, and six years later, he said he cannot imagine a summer that did not include participation in KAI community musical.

“I came to the conclusion after the second show,” Hommowun said. “If I can get time off of work, I am doing the show.”

KAI will present “Big” starting this weekend. It is the sixth annual summer production for the organization.

“Big,” based off the 1988 movie staring Tom Hanks, follows the story of a child who wishes to be an adult and gets his wish, yet he still thinks like a youth.

Shows start at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Then, there will be more shows at 7 p.m. July 17 and 18 and 2 p.m. July 19 at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. The show is part of KAI calendar, which has grown in recent years.

Previously, the organization went by the name of the Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival, which also was a name of the founding event.

It was formed in 1998. The group was rebranded as KAI in 2013 to better reflect the group’s additional activities.

KAI each year presents the fine arts festival, a summer musical and a fall theater production. The events include students, as well as professionals.

Cast members rehearse July 1 for the Kaneland Arts Initiative’s annual summer musical, “Big,” at Kaneland High School. last week was 15-year-old Natalie Mills, a Kaneland student who will be working as a stage manager. There also was Montgomery resident Robyn Lycan, 43, who is in the performance as Mrs. Kopecky. She is the mother of two students at McDole Elementary School.

Then there was the director, Doug Orlyk, 50, of West Chicago.

The participants noted how people come together each year to put on the performances.

“It’s a very unique group of individuals,” Orlyk said. “It’s the true definition of community theater.”

KAI’s goals encourage such collaboration by bringing in professional artists and also acting as a means for students and their families to “come to a better understanding and appreciation of fine arts education.”

Maria Dripps-Paulson, KAI’s executive director, was at the rehearsal, conducting musicians in the orchestra pit. She noted the orchestra includes students from Kane-

land, but also those from outside the district, such as St. Charles and West Aurora.

She said other band directors sometimes will recommend musicians for the musical.

Sometimes, she said, members are recruited.

“These kids are playing what all these people on Broadway are playing,” Dripps-Paulson said. “We don’t dumb it down.”

For participants, the summer productions can become family activities. Lycan said this is her third year in the event. This year, she said her youngest son, Jackson, is in the children’s chorus. Mills said this is her sixth year as a participant. Her entire family has been involved, and she said, “We even got our dad on stage one year.”

“It’s a family tradition,” Mills said.

Lycan said she remembered the movie and said it’s always nice when she can recognize the production. Hommowun said he would participate, no matter what was being performed. He said he

“We’ll have fabric blocks at the booth where people can write a special message to veterans, and those blocks will then be turned into a quilt,” Pennington said. “All the money we make at the event goes right back into Quilts of Valor and purchasing fabric.”

Pennington has been with the organization for 11 years.

Last year, Quilts of Valor presented 400 quilts to veterans. This year, one of those quilts will come from a quilt guild out of St. Charles. Ruth Marsh and a group of women known as the “Stitch-N-Sisters” put together a quilt consisting of 54 star blocks. Each person had a hand in it, and the group will be displaying its work during the Quilt and Textile Show. After the show, it will be donated to Quilts of Valor.

“I’ve submitted quilts to the show before, but this year is special,” Marsh said.

“When something like this quilt is done by a group of people, it’s amazing how beautiful it turns out. Our group is honored that some lucky veteran is going to get

Ice cream cone taken from top of Alice’s Place restaurant

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Alice’s Place owner Audrey Hanson said she would like to know who took her miniature plastic white and tan ice cream cone that was on top of her restaurant at 208 S. Main St.

in downtown Elburn.

The ice cream cone, which was 3 feet tall, was taken between June 18 and 19, Hanson told police. The cone was valued at $60.

The cone had been in place since November, Hanson said.

She told police the cone

had been bolted into the building.

“The board it was bolted to is still there,” Hanson said.

Hanson said she doesn’t know who could have taken the ice cream cone. Alice’s Place is a fast-food restaurant that sells ice cream and food.

The Batavia Depot Museum will host the ninth annual Quilt and Textile Show from July 17 through 19 at the Eastside Community Center and Shannon Hall, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia.

Each year the show takes on a different theme, and this year organizers decided to pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of Flag Day and give the show a patriotic twist. Organizers have put a call out to area residents asking for patriotic quilt submissions, and this year the show once again will feature Quilts of Valor, a nonprofit, volunteer organization that gives quilts to servicemen and servicewomen.

“We thought it would be fitting to have a patriotic theme for this year’s show,” said Carla Hill, director of the Batavia Depot Museum.

“We’ve worked with Quilts of Valor in the past, and we’re excited to have them back this year as we honor our country’s patriotism.”

Rita Pennington, one of three Illinois coordinators for Quilts of Valor, has been involved with the quilt show in the past and is excited about the show taking on a patriotic twist.

“Quilting is such a fun hobby, so why not use it to give back to our veterans?”

Pennington said. “At Quilts of Valor, we don’t consider ourselves a charity. We’re simply doing a service to our military men and women who have served for us.”

Elburn puts brakes on purchase on Route 47 ELBURN – Village officials opted to wait on a decision about whether to allow the Forest Preserve District of Kane County to buy a building on Route 47 in Elburn.

With two Elburn Village Board members absent Monday, trustees chose to table the forest preserve district’s request. District officials have eyed the property, at 1001 S. Main St., as a new home for the district’s Natural Resources Department. It is the location of the former Patten rental facility. The entire purchase would be 9.14 acres, with the south parcel in unincorporated Kane County.

Elburn trustees at first said the land, just south of Keslinger Road, would be better suited for commercial development. The sides appeared to have reached some common ground three weeks ago, with the forest preserve willing to help with several projects that would benefit Elburn, including a Third Street pedestrian bridge. Village permission is needed for the forest preserve district to buy the land within Elburn.

On Monday, three people spoke in public comment urging village officials to more carefully consider the plan.

Gale Pavlak, an Elburn resident and a member of the Kaneland School District 302 Board, talked about the impact such a move would have on the district. The forest preserve district would be exempt from paying taxes on the property, and she said the district’s current share of that is $21,000.

“This money educates our children,” Pavlak said.

Also, Elburn resident Al Herra spoke and told board members “you need to slow this down.” He said the Natural Resources Department didn’t need to be at that location.

Elburn Trustee Jeff Walter said more time was needed, especially with board members Dave Gualdoni and Pat Schuberg absent from the meeting.

“My support is waning on this,” Walter said.

Trustee Bill Grabarek said there was “a ton of information I’d like to see before we call a vote on this.” He said Route 47 and Keslinger Road is expected to become a major commercial area. Also, he wanted to protect other entities involved.

“I have a problem with the school district losing their money,” Grabarek said.

Trustee John Krukoff said the use “seems like a poor choice because of what it does to taxes.” He, too, mentioned the commercial implications, adding the area was to be the commercial entry into the village.

Kane County Board member Drew Frasz was in attendance, representing the forest preserve. Kane County Board members also are forest preserve district commissioners.

Frasz said the proposal was meant as a way to save money for taxpayers. He said the district could have decided to buy the unincorporated parcel to the south, and then would be able to buy the north parcel in the village, since it was an adjoining property. But he said there was no support from commissioners to do that.

“We do not want to come into Elburn uninvited,” Frasz said, telling Elburn Village Board members county officials would “leave it up to you.”

NORTH AURORA – Officials are looking at changing the village’s rules regarding what residents are required to do with dead, dying or diseased trees on their property.

Currently, residents are responsible for removing such trees from private property.

“Enforcement of this provision is very difficult and cumbersome due to a number of circumstances, including, but not limited to, tree location and the expertise needed to diagnose a dead, dying or diseased tree,” Mike Toth, the village’s community and economic development director, told trustees at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Jeff was an avid biker and loved reading history books. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and liked watching soccer, particularly following the British teams. Jeff was a loving husband, father, brother and son and cherished his time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Family, friends pay tribute to Haines Middle School Assistant Principal

“He was the one who brought joy and laughter to everyone in Haines,” said Sean Masoncup, a Haines physical education teacher and St. Charles North girls basketball and tennis coach.

One day, some students invited Fraser to join their “Capture the Flag”-style game during a gym class, and Fraser jumped right into the action wearing a full suit, Masoncup said.

When Fraser wasn’t working, he loved to travel and spend time with his family, which included daughters Lilly, 10, Annabelle, 8, Alice, 6 and Bobby, 1.

During the family’s twoweek Florida trip that ended July 3, Fraser dyed his hair multiple times for fun before he cut it off Sunday to return to work, Jennifer Fraser said.

Two-car crash slows Randall Road traffic

One southbound lane of Randall Road was closed Tuesday after a car drove into a ditch, just north of Williamsburg Avenue in Geneva.

GENEVA – A two-car crash slowed traffic for a while Tuesday afternoon on Randall Road near Williamsburg Avenue by Geneva Commons.

The driver of a 2014 blue Ford Escape hit a 2007 black Honda Odyssey at 1:18 p.m., Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email.

Police shut down the southbound lane until the scene

could be cleared.

The driver of the Ford, a 38-year-old woman from Elburn, drove into the ditch to avoid the accident, according to Nash’s email.

The driver of the Honda was a 45-year-old man from Grant Park, according to the email.

Both drivers and two passengers in the Honda all refused medical attention, according to the email. Nash wrote that no tickets were issued.

NORTH AURORA – Officials are looking at changing the village’s rules regarding what residents are required to do with dead, dying or diseased trees on their property.

Currently, residents are responsible for removing such trees from private property.

“Enforcement of this provision is very difficult and cumbersome due to a number of circumstances, including, but not limited to, tree location and the expertise needed to diagnose a dead, dying or diseased tree,” Mike Toth, the village’s community and economic development director, told trustees at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Village officials are looking at changing the rules to require that residents be responsible only for removing dead trees from their property. The rules also would apply to business and property owners.

North Aurora Village Trustee Mark Carroll wondered whether the rules have legal standing.

“Why do other municipalities not even address it?” Carroll asked.

North Aurora Village Trustee Mark Gaffino said he thought making people remove dead trees from their properties was a good thing.

“Why would we not want to do it?” Gaffino said. “There are reasons why this should be enforced.”

Trustees at last month’s development committee meeting spoke about the rules helping to preserve neighborhood aesthetics. Village Administrator Steve Bosco told trustees that staff will find out if there is case law for the rules.

ST. CHARLES – Jennifer Fraser knew her husband, Robert Fraser, was a special person from the first day she met him overseas in Belize in 2001.

“He just loved to live, and he was the kindest person … such a gentle spirit,” Jennifer Fraser said.

Whether with his family of six or among the students at Haines Middle School in St. Charles, the people who knew Robert, or Bob, Fraser said that he lived to serve people.

He died suddenly Sunday at age 39.

A memorial service will be held for Frasier at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Geneva East Campus, 2300 South St., Geneva, followed by a visitation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church.

Another service will be held at 11 a.m. July 18 at First Baptist Church, 108 Seventh Ave. South, Nashville, Tennessee.

Fraser grew up in Nashville and served as a middle school assistant principal in middle Tennessee before becoming an assistant principal at Haines in 2013, according to the Haines Middle School website.

Lessons from U.S. women’s Cup win

“You could find no better metaphor for the way the rest of the world can now compete head-to-head more effectively than ever with America,” Thomas Friedman wrote in 2005, “than the struggles of the U.S. Olympic basketball team.”

On Sunday, the U.S. women’s national soccer team beat Japan, 5-2, in what was the most-watched soccer telecast in American history. What’s that a metaphor for?

Friedman’s claim, about the 2004 men’s Olympic basketball team, came in his mega-bestselling globalization book “The World Is Flat.” Americans had invented basketball and dominated it for decades, Friedman reasoned, but basketball knowledge had spread, global standards had risen and the U.S. had failed to keep up. It was a little like “the steady erosion of America’s scientific and engineering base, which has always been the source of American innovation and our rising standard of living.”

Of course, the U.S. went back to dominating men’s Olympic basketball in 2008 and 2012.

So … women’s soccer.

really dominated it. Women’s soccer was born there, too, and was quite popular in the early decades of the 20th century, until the Football Association – to which all the country’s men’s professional teams belong – banned women from playing on its fields in 1921, claiming that “the game of football is quite unsuitable for females.”

That ban was finally lifted in 1971, by which time women’s soccer was beginning to catch on in some other European countries.

In the U.S., it then got a huge boost from Title IX in 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. As a result, girls’ sports in high school and women’s sports in college suddenly became a big thing, and soccer probably benefited the most because it didn’t require expensive equipment or special abilities.

The first women’s soccer World Cup was held in 1991, and the U.S. beat Norway 2-1 in the final. Since then, the U.S. has been the only country to make it to the semifinals of every World Cup, and has won it all three times.

England made it to the semifinals this year for the first time.

There are now women’s professional leagues in several countries, but they’re not exactly big-money operations. Two mem-

bers of the U.S. national team who play for the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League, Morgan Brian and Meghan Klingenberg, live with former Houston Rockets (and New York Knicks) coach Jeff van Gundy during the season to save on rent.

What does all this add up to?

Here are three possible lessons: 1. Failing to invest in human capital, and preventing people from developing it themselves, can be costly. England is only now catching up after decades of holding back women’s soccer.

2. Long-term global dominance of any field is rare for one country. Men’s Olympic basketball has been an exception for the U.S. Movie-making, too. Soccer is harder to dominate in part because its luck-to-skill ratio is higher than basketball’s. But it’s also just that competitive forces really do make it hard to stay on top.

3. Sunday’s TV ratings would seem to indicate that there’s some major untapped commercial potential in women’s soccer.

Please, somebody figure out how to tap it so Brian and Klingenberg can afford to get their own apartments.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Fermilab answers questions

To the Editor: On June 29, a Kane County Chronicle reader asked questions about Fermilab’s Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility, a proposed new project that would be the laboratory’s flagship for the next two decades.

The facility would create particles called neutrinos and send them deep underground to research facilities at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The project’s goal is to learn more about neutrinos and the role they played in the universe’s evolution.

Neutrinos are harmless elementary particles that are produced in great quantities in the sun and in the Earth.

We all live surrounded by neutrinos: One trillion pass through your hand every second. Neutrinos almost never interact with other particles, which makes them both safe and very hard for scientists to measure.

Scientists use particle accelerators to create large quantities of neutrinos for study. Fermilab has operated particle accelerators and neutrino-producing facilities for more than 30 years. For the last 10 years, we’ve been sending neutrinos from Fermilab to research facilities in Minnesota. No tunnel would be necessary to send the neutrinos from Fermilab to South Dakota, and the neutrinos will have no effect on the rock through which they travel. There would be no construction outside Fermilab.

Since Earth is round and neutrinos travel in a straight line, Fermilab would point neutrinos into the ground to aim them at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

They would leave the Fermilab site at a depth of about 200 feet, be almost 1,000 feet under the surface when they pass under the Fox River, and reach a maximum depth of about 20 miles as they travel to South Dakota.

The construction and operation of the new facility would add to the world-class particle accelerator complex we have at Fermilab. With the help of a number of technical experts, including independent consultants, the Department of Energy is preparing an environmental assessment for the construction and operation of the facility. The DOE recently posted its draft environmental assessment document for public comment, and the public comment period runs until Friday. Kaneland grad helping with local camps after pro season in Italy

D

ave Dudzinski seems to find a way to make time for everyone.

After spending Tuesday visiting his alma mater Holy Cross in Massachusetts, Dudzinski headed down to Providence, Rhode Island, to spend time with his girlfriend on their threeyear anniversary.

But being the person that he is, Dudzinski’s trip will be short-lived as he comes back to Illinois quickly, with plans to help his former Kaneland basketball coach, and now West Aurora head coach, Brian Johnson with his Hustle Camp in Yorkville. Johnson said Dudzinski has helped on and off for the past five years and it is a privilege to have him come back to help younger players..

“It’s great having him around,” Johnson said of Dudzinski. “He’s such a personable human being and for the guys at these camps to have the opportunity to work with someone like him – especially Kaneland guys that are very aware of the name Dave Dudzinski – is an awesome thing. He really defines to true meaning of hard work and passion for this game.”

“It’s just something I love to do,” Dudzinski said of helping with camps.

“Being a professional athlete gives you a little more of a platform for people to want to listen to you. I’m not sure if coaching is something I’d ever want to get into, but being back and helping teach the game the way I was taught is a great experience for me.”

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound center just finished his first professional basketball season, playing with Fortitudo Agrigento on the southern coast of Sicily, Italy.

With it being just his second trip of his life outside the United States, Dudzinski, 23, had to adjust quickly to a completely different lifestyle.

“I definitely learned a lot not only about basketball, but about a different culture,” Dudzinski said. “With how far south in Sicily we were, I was kind of isolated and immersed in the culture rather quickly. Just small customs and things got easier as I got more comfortable and bought into everything.”

But as culture-shocked as it seemed, Dudzinski got a visit from his mother, Barb, and younger sister, Katy, during this past Christmas, and a second visit

from his mom during the league tournament finals in May. In that playoff tournament, Dudzinski’s No. 8-seeded team made a run to the finals, as he averaged a near double-double (17 points a game, 8.5 rebounds a game), up from the 11 points a game he averaged during the season.

Johnson said Dudzinski went toe-to-toe

with what was considered to be the best big man in the league in the final series, one that Dudzinski’s bunch lost in five games.

He had to learn how to play a different style of play, with much more of a team game than he was used to in America, and the fact that he said “everyone can shoot ... regardless of size” being the biggest adjustment on the court.

But now that he is back in the states, the 2010 Kaneland graduate is trying to stay busy, helping with the camps as he waits to hear about the next plans for his future.

His agent, Nick Morteo of Boston-based Pro Partner Sports Management, has been working hard to help Dudzinski receive another contract offer, with the plan to move up and play in a higher league for more money after finishing up his rookie year with the second-tiered Italian team.

“I enjoyed my time and learned a lot during my time in Italy,” Dudzinski said. “I had a great rookie year, and it was a great place to live, but we think it’s in the best interests for my career to move on and try to play in a higher league.”

Dudzinski said he has been in contact with a handful of teams, some from both Germany and Belgium, but said with the slow moving countries and cultures, offers to Americans are still a few weeks out. But he remains extremely confident that he will be in uniform overseas next season.

But with the kind of person he is, paired with the work ethic he brings to the court each and every day, Johnson said it has an effect on more people than he will ever realize.

“Seeing his motivation to continue to better his basketball career is really inspiring to me,” Johnson said. “It makes me want to be a better coach to see how successful he has become. Players like Dave make everyone around them better players and people and has made me a better coach because of it.”

It doesn’t seem to be too much of a surprise to anyone around Dudzinski during his high school or collegiate years, that he continues to succeed and find ways to get closer to that elusive dream of playing in the NBA.

“I’m not sure if coaching is something I’d ever want to get into, but being back and helping teach the game the way I was taught is a great experience for me.”

Aurora Central Catholic soccer standout Jordyn Sundberg has announced she will continue her academic and athletic career at Augustana in the fall. Sundberg, who led the area with 24 goals, was a Kane County Chronicle first team all-area forward.

ACC coach Kristy Kane said after a season that saw the Chargers play in a Class 1A Supersectional game that Sundberg was “the best girls soccer player to ever come through ACC.”

APPLETON, Wis. – After their 10-game win streak was snapped Monday night, the Kane County Cougars went right back to their winning ways of the second half of the season, scoring three first-inning runs en route to a 6-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday.

Wei-Chieh Huang improved to 4-1 and dropped his ERA to 1.54 on the season for the Cougars (11-2 second half, 47-34 overall), pitching five innings of one-run ball. Colin Bray drove in two runs and Chuck Taylor had three hits out of the leadoff spot for the Cougars, who have now won 16 of their past 18 contests.

The first-place Cougars will again host the Timber Rattlers (5-8, 28-55) today at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as Josh Taylor makes his Kane County debut on the mound against Wisconsin’s Jon Perrin (0-0, 5.79 ERA).

It’s time to return to the golf course QUICK READ Kevin Druley SUGAR GROVE – Two cameramen sprawled on the edges of the Rich Harvest Farms practice range, craning their necks and lenses skyward at the would-be stars of the show.

Top amateur golfers Doug Ghim and Nick Hardy, both native Illinoisans, pristinely prepared last week for an afternoon practice round at the host course of next month’s Western Amateur, a stage in which they’re expected to shine.

Two stalls to the right, a duffer primed to play RHF with considerably less fanfare hacked away himself, smacking solid iron shots by the grace of sod while playfully muttering, “What about me?”

Don’t worry. This isn’t another self-deprecating column about yours truly’s golf deficiencies, although the winter TrackMan tutelage of Geneva’s Pat Lenski still swirls in the back of my brain.

Instead, it’s a quick ode to what ought to supplant soccer as “The Beautiful Game.”

At least until I get the shanks again.

Full disclosure: I’ve done lots of things in the past 13 months, but golfing isn’t one of them. For much of that time, my aging clubs still resided in my trunk, but that location was just as delusional as my designs to make routine tee times again.

Before long, the clubs shifted to my fianceé’s parents’ basement, not exactly optimal for trying to pick up the pieces at the range, let alone enjoying a nice day with a quick nine holes or a full round. I swore to past playing partners that said fianceé wasn’t the Yoko Ono of my game – heck, she and I have even played a round or two – but the truth is our courtship probably had something to do with the hiatus.

Still there, honey?

Rich Harvest Farms offered a media round as part of next month’s Western Amateur, and with my game still flawed yet far better off than my most recent opportunity to play the renowned course, I obliged, if even for less than a full 18 holes.

Other obligations kept me from spending an entire round in Sugar Grove, but that hardly mattered. I needed something to spark me to move the clubs back to the trunk again, to head to the range before ostensibly embarrassing myself on owner Jerry Rich’s Rembrandt.

Truth be told, the range

experience at RHF nearly offered enough to make my day. Perfect weather, bright white Titleist practice balls and an overriding air of anticipation prevailed, ultimately darning my decision to scarf an extra brat between the end of the Western Amateur press conference and the day’s shotgun start.

An incoming Kaneland sophomore caddied for my playing partner and I. For the next couple hours, I followed the lead of ChicagoGolfReport.com’s Walter Lis, a man with 43 times my Twitter followers and at least that much of an edge in career birdies.

I called our caddie “Tommy,” and felt like Chevy Chase’s Ty Webb saying “Danny.”

There are hundreds of other golfing readers more entitled to this kind of treatment than me. But what are you going to do? In 2009, with RHF hosting the LPGA Solheim Cup, I declined the opportunity to partake in the media round.

In retrospect, it was probably for the best. But it also was a catalyst toward bringing me back to recreational golf. Admittedly an overthinker on and off the course, I probably took too much satisfaction in keeping a golf pencil of the St. Louis par 3 course at which I learned to golf on my person at RHF. Wish I could say Tower Tee had something on RHF, but I can’t.

I wish, too, that this column would end with the true story of a spectacular shot, but that’s not happen-

ing, either. There were a few decent ones, however, which elicited genuine compliments from the group.

Along the way, I sliced an approach shot into a water hazard, but all wasn’t lost.

The ball skipped close to the shoreline, and a valiant – if not awkward-looking – effort ensured its return to my custody.

Upon rising to my feet and heading to the drop zone, I thought once more of the cameramen.

Turns out I had more in common with them than Ghim or Hardy.

McIlroy is in the midst of a season marked by inconsistency, featuring wins at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the WGC-Cadillac Classic and Wells Fargo Championship, plus top 10 finishes at the Masters (fourth) and U.S. Open (tie for ninth), but also three missed cuts in a three-month span this spring.

Last year, he went wire-towire in winning the British Open at Royal Liverpool, then added the PGA Championship at Valhalla a month later, joining Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Woods as the only golfers with four major titles before the age of 26.

The last time the British Open was held at St. Andrews, in 2010, McIlroy, 21 at the time, overcame a second-round 80 and finished tied for third.

For Spieth, the 21-year-old Texan threatening to overtake McIlroy atop the top of the world rankings, the potential loss of his top rival makes the pathway to a third straight major easier to envision. In winning the U.S. Open three weeks ago, Spieth fought off the charges of several top golfers, including McIlroy, who closed with a 66 to make things interesting down the stretch, and current world No. 4 Dustin Johnson, who had an eagle putt on the 72nd hole to win the tournament, but three-putted to lose by a shot.

But in the post-Woods era of championship golf, the best thing the sport had going for it was the prospect of a Spieth-McIlroy rivalry – with a showdown at St. Andrews, the renowned “Home of Golf,” a particularly anticipated chapter. With McIlroy on the mend, that rivalry may be on hold until further notice.

At the pinnacle of golf, two names stand above all others: Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.

They own the top two spots, respectively, in the world rankings, as well as the sport’s past four major titles.

Some 10 days from now, they were set to square off in the British Open on the Old Course at St. Andrews, with McIlroy seeking to defend the Claret Jug and Spieth gunning for the third leg of golf’s elusive grand slam.

The news Monday that McIlroy has suffered an ankle injury while playing a game of pickup soccer with friends at his Northern Ireland home has altered the landscape atop the sport.

With McIlroy’s status for the Open Championship questionable at best, Spieth might have just lost the biggest threat to his grand slam hopes, while the next tier of golfers might not have to worry about the world’s No. 1 player making a seemingly inevitable charge to the top of the leaderboard.

McIlroy, 26, broke the news on his Instagram account Monday morning – posting a picture of himself on crutches, his left leg in a boot, with an explanation that read, in part, “Total rupture of ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage ... Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started. Working hard to get back as soon as I can.”

In layman’s terms, McIlroy appears to have suffered a badly sprained ankle. The ATFL refers to the anterior talofibular ligament, the one most commonly sprained.

While a spokesperson for McIlroy quickly released a statement saying he still hopes to play in the British Open, he already has withdrawn from

this week’s Scottish Open – a key tune-up event – and with the first round of the Open slated for July 16, such a recovery seems unlikely for an injury that typically requires a rehabilitation of several weeks and sometimes requires surgery.

The better question might be whether McIlroy can make it back in time for next month’s PGA Championship.

“We will all miss you @TheOpen next week my friend,” tweeted Spaniard Sergio Garcia, McIlroy’s Ryder Cup teammate. “Fast and healthy recovery.”

Paul McGinley, Europe’s Ryder Cup captain in 2014, told RTE Sport, an Irish website, that the prospect of having McIlroy miss the Open would “be a blow not just for Rory but a blow for the game as a whole.”

While various medical experts have estimated McIlroy’s chances of playing in the British Open anywhere from 10 to 25 percent, Melvin Deese, an orthopedic sports surgeon who once repaired a similar injury to Davis Love III, gave McIlroy a “50-50” chance.

“Could he do it?” said Deese, who was not familiar with the specifics of McIlroy’s injury.

“The answer is yeah, he could.

Is it wise? Probably not. But these guys can block out a lot more [pain] than the average golfer. But if his doctor thinks he can swing without [having surgery first], the operation is going to be the same now as it is then.”

Deese based his “50-50” prognosis on an assumption that an elite athlete has a stronger will and higher pain threshold than the average person, and cited the example of Tiger Woods limping his way to the 2008 U.S. Open title on a left knee that required surgery to repair a torn ligament afterwards.

“He’s a dedicated guy,” Deese said of McIlroy. “He could probably [play] if that’s

Meniere’s disease can’t be cured but can be treated Dear Doctor K: I’ve been feeling dizzy and have had a constant ringing in my ears. My doctor has diagnosed me with Meniere’s disease. What is this, and what can be done to treat it?

Dear Reader: In Meniere’s disease, fluid collects in the inner ear. The inner ear is a complex system that is critical to both hearing and balance. Sound waves hit a membrane (the “eardrum”) in the middle ear. The vibrations of the membrane are transmitted to tiny bones in the middle ear, and then to another membrane that starts the inner ear. Inside the inner ear is a snail-shaped structure called the cochlea. The cochlea transforms sound waves into nerve impulses that the brain can interpret. That’s how we hear.

The vestibular system, which regulates balance, is also part of the inner ear. Pressure from the fluid buildup of Meniere’s and damage to delicate structures in the inner ear can cause a variety of symptoms. A person with Meniere’s disease may experience: • Severe vertigo and dizziness.

• Nausea and vomiting during vertigo.

• Trouble with balance.

• A feeling of pressure or full-

• Tinnitus – a ringing, buzzing or other noise in the affected ear.

• Hearing loss that gets worse over time.

Meniere’s is a lifelong disease in which bouts of hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus come and go. With each repeated attack, lasting tinnitus and hearing loss become more likely. There is no cure for Meniere’s disease, and no treatment can prevent the permanent hearing loss associated with it. Instead, treatment focuses on managing symptoms.

Medications may be used to control vertigo, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Diuretic medications may help reduce the amount of fluid that builds in the inner ear. Avoiding caffeine, alcohol, salt and nicotine may also help to reduce the frequency or severity of attacks.

In severe cases, your doctor may recommend injections of a strong antibiotic, called gentamicin, into the middle ear. A side

effect of gentamicin is damage to the balance mechanism inside the ear. Selectively destroying the balance part of the ear may actually improve symptoms. That’s because the sick balance center in the inner ear keeps sending confusing signals to the brain. By destroying that part of one ear, the confusing signals are eliminated.

Your doctor may recommend surgery if your symptoms of vertigo are severe or frequent.

Different surgical procedures are available, each with pros and cons. Some types of surgery require your doctor to destroy parts of the inner ear, which can cause permanent hearing loss. If you are considering surgery, talk to your doctor about the possible risks and benefits to you.

Any time the treatment of a diseased organ involves destroying a part of that organ, you know that doctors and scientists have a poor understanding of the disease.

Hopefully, with more research, that will change.
