After not riding a bicycle for 50 years, centenarian doesn’t forget how

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Clara VanBosch was born 100 years ago on Jan. 24, 1914, in a house on Dean Street in St. Charles and had not been on a bicycle for 50 years – that is, until she just rode an adult-sized tricycle provided by the Mill Race Cyclery of Geneva.

“I really enjoyed it,” VanBosch said. “It was a big surprise to me. Four girls came in my room and said, ‘Clara, we have a surprise.’

And they took me out in the front and all of a sudden, I see this guy coming with this three-wheeler. Oh my God, I was surprised myself.”

VanBosch has been at Briarwood Healthcare at GreenFields of Geneva while recovering from an illness.

Activities coordinator Erin McCart learned that VanBosch loved to ride a bike and missed the activity.

She called Mill Race Cyclery owner Bruce Heidlauf to see if he could participate in a bike-riding surprise for VanBosch – and he was immediately on board.

“I figured I would be walking alongside her, but I had to run to keep up,” Heidlauf said. “It was a lot of fun. I was

kind of blown away by what she did. She went around a couple of times. She had the greatest time and the greatest attitude. I would take it [the tricycle] out again if they asked me to.”

VanBosch said she would be ready to ride it again, as well.

“I really enjoyed it. He was the nicest person,” VanBosch said of Heidlauf. “He was standing there, and I’m off. And then he caught up with me. He said, ‘I’m getting exercise to catch up with you.’ I kind of looked behind me, and I saw him running to catch up. I did enjoy it.

It was such a big surprise.

It certainly was a nice surprise.”

VanBosch said her maiden name was Cailliau. She said she was the youngest of five children all born at home in a house on Dean Street in St. Charles.

“When I was young, I rode an awful lot with the bicycle with my older brother alongside me,” VanBosch said.

“Not only that, I went roller skating at rinks and him, too. He was good for it for being a brother. I would also walk miles and think nothing of it.”

Police await cause of death of Geneva woman

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Police on Monday awaited to hear the cause of death of a Geneva woman found Sunday on railroad tracks on the city’s east side.

Police found the body of Kathleen M. King, 32, on Sunday morning on the Union Pacific Railway tracks. Officers responded to a report of a woman laying on the tracks at 6:50 a.m. Sunday, south of Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane, according to a Geneva police news release.

“There are some questions that have to be answered that we don’t have answers to at this time. We won’t be able to proceed until we have the cause of death from the [Kane County] Coroner’s Office.”

Police Cmdr. Julie Nash The Geneva Police Department’s investigation into King’s death is ongoing, and nothing regarding the death is being ruled out at this point, Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said Monday afternoon.

“There are some questions

A Metra conductor on a train traveling on Track No. 1 observed a female later identified as King laying on Track No. 2, the southernmost set of tracks, according to the news release.

King was found less than half a mile from where she lived on the 800 block of Oak

Street in Geneva, according to police. She had a family, including children, Nash said.

The area of railroad tracks where King was found is partially gated, but there also is an ungated part with high brush around it, Nash said.

The Union Pacific Police, Metra Police and the Kane County Coroner’s Office also are investigating the incident.

FAMILY FOCUS Geneva family stays busy in business together

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – If you see Rob Mondi of Geneva, chances are at least one of his two sons will not be far behind.

Mondi’s oldest son Robert, 18, began working at the Buffalo Wings & Rings, 1279 Rickert Drive in Naperville, after his father took it over in September. His other son Alec, 16, used to work at one of seven Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants where Mondi is a franchisee with a business partner.

Mondi’s sons worked for their father in 2011 at his Slider Frank’s restaurant in St. Charles before he closed that business and moved on to other projects.

They plan to give their father a helping hand at yet another business closer to home when he finalizes plans for a new restaurant somewhere in Geneva. Mondi is not ready to go public with the concept yet, but he is working on the location and hopes to open sometime early next year.

The type of family involvement that Mondi has can be good for business, said Philip Schram, executive vice president of franchise development for Buffalo Wings & Rings.

Schram said that 15 of the franchise’s 45 locations have more than one generation of family involved in the business.

“When you are a leader with a family focus, you start to attract people [to the restaurant] with a family focus,” Schram said.

Schram said Buffalo Wings & Rings is a family restaurant that competes with sports bars that cater more to adults. Mondi said customers seem to like locally owned and operated restaurants.

“If owners are willing to bring their children into their business, it lends credibility to it,” Mondi said.

“It’s not a fly-by-night operation.”

Mondi said that he doesn’t go out of his way to market the family aspect, but his son Robert said that it does come up when the regular customers see him constantly and ask why he always seems to be working at the restaurant.

Robert Mondi said that

his co-workers were unsure of him at first because he’s the owner’s son, but he received no special treatment from his father and gets the same shifts and pay as everyone else.

Robert Mondi said his father is his idol, and he plans to follow in his footsteps. He currently takes classes at the College of DuPage and

plans to major in restaurant management and minor in business hospitality.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com VIRGIL – A 50-year-old North Aurora man, who had been critically injured in a two-motorcycle crash June 25, died July 1, the DuPage County Coroner’s Office said.

Steven Wenger died at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital after he was airlifted there from the scene of the

crash, according to an obituary listed at Laird Funeral Home’s website.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin, with a funeral service to follow the visitation.

Wenger was involved in a crash on Route 64, just west of Meredith Road. Also involved in the crash was Timothy Corbitt, 55, of Elburn, who was treated and released

at the scene, Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said. Corbitt was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in the crash.

Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, Gengler said.

The crash remains under investigation by sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.

Family appreciates time spent together open a food truck. Mondi appreciates his son’s drive but wants him to take business classes and finish college first.

Alec Mondi had no problem working for his father, but he left his job at the Warrenville Dunkin’ Donuts, 2S721 Route 59, due to the long commute from GeneAlec Mondi va. Mondi would always stop in to see Alec on Tuesdays and help him close, and Robert would bring him dinner.

Andersson resigned to pursue his campaign for State Representative in the Nov. 4 general election. Andersson is seeking the seat of State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, who is not seeking another term.

Andersson won the Republican primary in March and is running unopposed.

The appointment will be until the date of the next library election in April 2015,

Long wait over as city OKs contract City will build third parking tier to provide additional 180 spaces

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva aldermen approved a construction agreement Monday for building the third level of the Third Street Commuter Parking Deck, which will provide an additional 180 parking spaces.

tee of the whole meeting, aldermen unanimously recommended approval of a $4.48 million construction agreement with Walsh Construction Company of Chicago, then they took final action at the regularly scheduled City Council meeting that followed.

Most of the cost is being funded by a grant from Me-

tra, officials said.

“We have waited a long, long, long time for this,” Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“We should acknowledge our good friend [State] Rep. Tim Schmitz, [R-Batavia], our good friend former mayor Don DeWitte of St. Charles who served on the RTA board and others helped us, lobbied for this,” Burns said. “I would of course be remiss if I didn’t also recognize our city administrator, Mary McKittrick, who spent countless hours on the phone and sending emails asking, ‘What the

heck is going on?’ ” The city has been working with Metra, the RTA and Illinois Department of Transportation to secure grant funding for the third level of the existing parking deck, which has 360 spaces, officials said.

The grant agreement was first approved by the city council in June 2011. Walsh was the only bid received Jan. 14 for the project, officials said.

Metra, the RTA and IDOT also approved Walsh for the project, according to the bid

documents.

The project’s funding has been in the city’s budget for four years, officials said.

City administrators said they will work to get temporary parking for parking deck commuters, PACE shuttle service from a temporary lot at First Baptist Church on South Street.

Officials said they also would work on logistics related to the construction as well as communicating with commuters, downtown businesses, visitors and residents.

City council tables 12K event request ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday tabled part of an application for a December event so there can be more discussion about how it might affect downtown businesses and another event.

The proposed event, organized by Multisport Madness, would begin at 8:30 a.m.

Dec. 6 and likely conclude by 10:30 a.m. in downtown St. Charles, according to a memo from St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Steve Huffman to the council. The event

would require some street and parking lot closures in the downtown area.

Ward 4 Alderman Jim Martin made a motion to table the holiday run because he was concerned it might conflict with TriCity Family Services’ next Snowflake Shuffle 5K Run/Walk event.

TriCity Family Services raises between $20,000 to $25,000 with the annual event, and early December is when it is usually held, Mar-

tin said.

Ward 4 Alderman Jo Krieger said she had several calls from downtown merchants that are upset at the thought of closing downtown streets even for hour or two for any weekend after Thanksgiving.

“They feel that downtown merchants are being trampled on … by all of these additional activities,” Krieger said.

The race organizers invit-

ed area businesses to a July 1 meeting to discuss any issues they might have with the events. No one showed up for that meeting, Huffman told the City Council on Monday.

The initial application was for the 12K of Christmas and the 2015 St. Charles Half Marathon. The council on Monday did vote 10-0 in favor on closures and amplification for the half-marathon event, which is proposed to be held on April 25, 2015.

GENEVA – Relux Vintage Restored and Painted Furniture, 316 Franklin St., Geneva, got started because owner Patrick Meyer wanted to paint an old dresser for his son. The St. Charles resident, a toy designer and toy consultant, used paint from the hardware store without good results, he said.

“I started looking into what are better products, and that led me to CeCe Caldwell’s paint products specifically for redoing furniture,” Meyer said. “I redid that dresser and a lot of other furniture and posted it on Facebook. And sold it. It was a hobby that turned into a storefront.”

He opened the Relux in January, selling revitalized furniture retail, as well as custom work, and offering classes for do-it-yourself projects.

U.S. cannot tolerate a free-for-all on its southern border THE WASHINGTON POST The failure of immigration reform to make headway in the Republican-dominated House of Representatives is a chronicle of a death foretold.

House Republican hard-liners, including tea partiers, have spent years broadcasting their intransigence.

That White House officials and moderate Republicans continued plugging away in hopes of a compromise was an exercise mostly in wishful thinking. That is now over.

What comes next is less clear. Informed by Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, that the House would take up no immigration bill this year, President Barack Obama last week vowed to move without Congress, using his executive powers.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

But the fact that Congress has chosen inaction, no matter how irresponsibly, does not grant plenipotentiary powers to the executive; Obama cannot rule by fiat.

If, as White House aides have suggested, Obama elects to grant more mass reprieves from deportation, he does so at the risk that Congress and the courts may reverse his moves.

True, the original sin in the immigration debate rests with Republicans in Congress, who have blocked any reasonable reform.

House GOP members have refused to take up a sweeping overhaul of the immigration system passed more than a year ago by the Senate. In its place they have offered no alternative to address the problem of 11 million illegal

immigrants, most of whom have been in this country for at least a decade.

Congress’ failure has left in place a state of dysfunction ripe for crisis. The latest is a surge in illegal border crossings in the Rio Grande Valley by tens of thousands of unauthorized immigrants, many of them unaccompanied children. In the last nine months, more than 50,000 such minors have been apprehended along the southwestern border, more than twice the number from the same period last year.

Many come under the belief, in some cases justified, that they will be allowed to stay for months or years as they await a hearing in immigration court on their claims for protection or asylum. That has overwhelmed

already burdened detention centers.

This is unsustainable. The United States cannot tolerate a free-for-all on the border that encourages vulnerable Central American children to risk their lives traversing Mexico. Immigration advocates warn of a humanitarian disaster if thousands of children are turned back.

They should not minimize the humanitarian disaster caused by encouraging children to subject themselves to smugglers and harsh conditions in the false belief that America, once reached, will welcome them permanently.

Mindful of that, Obama is seeking more than $2 billion from Congress to reinforce the border and accelerate the processing of these minors.

Rightly, the administration

is also seeking to modify existing law by streamlining deportation procedures to discourage young, unauthorized immigrants from making a dash for the border.

Sadly, a tougher stance on deporting youngsters caught along the border may be the only modification to existing immigration law that Republicans in Congress will accept. In the absence of a comprehensive solution, this country will continue to fend off crises and plug holes without addressing the millions of undocumented immigrants who have been in America for years.

That may reassure Republican incumbents who fear primary challenges from anti-immigration fire-breathers. It does nothing to fix a broken system.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Artwork cuts to the chase Barbershop drawing depicts Cubs World Series drought with beard

N

ot even the Cubs’ 106-year World Series championship drought can keep longtime friends and Cubs fans Scott Comperda and Frank Pavlek down. For them, a picture hanging in the Avenue Two Barber Shop in downtown St. Charles says it all.

Posted on the back wall of Pavlek’s barber station sits a sketched picture of a man in a Cubs hat with a beard, seemingly looking for comfort. Behind his sunken eyes lies a story of 106 years worth of Cubs misery.

The picture’s story began when Pavlek attended a party about 20 years ago and sketch artist V. “Jim” Roseili drew the picture, giving it to Pavlek.

Pavlek then posted the picture to his work station wall. Comperda, a customer and friend of Pavlek’s since 1974, gave Pavlek an idea for the picture, suggesting he elongate the picture by sketching a copy of the beard and attaching a long strand of the “beard” (laminated paper) in which he inscribed every year the Cubs have not won the World Series since the last title in 1908.

“It’s an illustration of the futility of the Cubs,” Comperda said. “Anybody can look at a certain year, and reflect on how long it’s been since they last won it.”

For either new or returning customers, the picture is a natural source of conversation, and depending on which Chicago baseball team one supports, it could bring either tears or jeers.

Memories of the 1984 NL Championship Series loss to the San Diego Padres and the 2003 NLCS collapse against the Florida Marlins are just two of many instances throughout Cubs history that the picture signifies.

It is a painful reminder for some Avenue Two customers, including St. Charles resident and loyal Cubs fan Chris Gibson, who has had Pavlek cut his hair for 26 years.

Since his first haircut as an infant, Gibson has sat in Pavlek’s chair and watched the beard “grow” year-afteryear.

“The look on [the subject’s] face says it all,” he said. “One day we’ll get to tear that thing down.”

While it remains to be seen if the Cubs will return to the World Series any time soon, there is no shortage of optimism inside the shop, especially with the Cubs’ ascending minor league system earning rave reviews.

“I predict the Cubs will win the World Series in 2016 or 2017,” Comperda said.

“I’m really excited. I had a lot of choices, but I really liked [Indiana’s] coaches,” Weber said. “They have great facilities, and I’m looking forward to getting there.”

With his college plans settled, Weber can point his full attention to his upcoming tournaments.

The pressure of the tournaments doesn’t seem to bother him, as he has been playing golf since he was 7 years old.

His father, Mark Weber, would bring him to Elgin Country Club, and it was there his love for golf sprouted.

At the age of 12, Weber began to compete in tournaments through the Illinois Junior Golf Association.

Weber competed in the Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship, and had a one-stroke lead, shooting a one over par 72, heading into the final round.

Weber ultimately surrendered the win to Brendan O’Reilly, who finished with a total score of 212. Weber finished fifth at 216.

Despite the tough loss, for Weber, he’s just focused on “progressing as a player,” with all his tournaments and schooling ahead.

“I’m really looking forward to what is in store for me at Indiana, and I am definitely going to miss high school golf,” Weber said.

It seems nothing can slow down former Burlington Central golfer Matt Weber these days.

Weber, 18, in the midst of a summer full of competing in tournaments and maintaining his golf game, is set to compete July 21 through 23 in the 65th Illinois Open Championship in Glenview, in which he finished 18th last year.

Since he was among the top 25 finishers in the tournament, Weber did not have to qualify into the tournament this year.

“I played pretty well,” Weber said of his showing last year. “It was a good finish for my first professional event.”

In addition, he will compete in the 84th Illinois State Amateur Championship at Cantigny Park in Wheaton July 15 through 17.

It will be Weber’s first time competing in the tournament, but he’s familiar with Cantigny because he used to practice there during the winter.

Weber joined the American Junior Golf Association and captured his first victory at the 2012 McArthur Towel and Sports Future Legends, at the Legend of Bristlecone in Hartland, Wisconsin, a 54hole stroke play event conducted by the AJGA. Over the three-day tournament, the rural St. Charles resident posted scores of 69-70-73, to capture the win over 72 other top-tier male junior golfers in the nation.

Returning to varsity play his senior year at Central after missing his junior year because of an eligibility misunderstanding, he helped lead the Rockets to a fourthplace team finish in Class 2A and took second overall individually at the IHSA State Tournament.

Rabin catching on for trio of summer teams

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Erik Rabin isn’t just playing for three baseball teams, he’s doing so at the most physically demanding position on the diamond.

The St. Charles North junior catcher is squatting triple time this summer for North’s summer team, St. Charles American Legion Post 342 and the Schaumburg Seminoles travel team.

Rabin caught part of two games Monday for North in a wood-bat tournament, just another day behind the dish for Rabin and his resilient knees.

“I ice a lot,” Rabin said. “I’ve been holding up pretty well. I’ve been icing, lifting, doing band work. I think every game I’m catching, I’m getting better.”

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound 16-year-old is coming off a strong weekend tournament with the Seminoles at Notre Dame in which he tripled in consecutive at-bats on the Fighting Irish’s home field.

While catcher is his primary position, he said he’s also seen Erik Rabin time at first base and third base with the Seminoles.

Among the three teams he’s playing for, Rabin said legion ball – in which some of the opposing players already have reached college – probably presents the most rigorous competition.

But keeping his knees in working order is arguably a

bigger challenge than any nasty breaking ball he has to smother behind the plate.

“My knees take a beating but next year they’re going to come back stronger,” Rabin said. “I try and do whatever I can. Every day, I’m getting better. I once saw a video on YouTube, a motivation video, and what they said was no days off. That’s been my primary goal this past season.”

Justin Moriarty, head coach of the St. Charles legion team and a North assistant coach, said Rabin’s hustle and upbeat nature position him for success.

As for Rabin’s summer workload, Moriarty said there is a strong rotation of catchers in the mix, especially considering returning varsity starter Kyle Khoury chews up many of the innings for North’s summer

team.

“I don’t think we’re working him too hard but if we played 100 games during the spring, Erik would want to catch all 100 of them,” Moriarty said.

At least Rabin no longer has to carve out time to catch his big sister, Sabrina.

Sabrina Rabin, who graduated from North this spring, was a standout pitcher for the North Stars’ softball program, and the siblings teamed up as a convenient battery for informal workouts. But Sabrina Rabin, who will play college softball at Northwestern, projects as an outfielder, not a pitcher, at NU. “It was the perfect combination,” Rabin said. “Sabrina was a pitcher, I was the catcher and we helped each other out.”

Like his big sister, Rabin would like to attend a presti-

gious university when the time comes. To that end, he’s squeezing in time this summer for AP-level studies. He also enjoys archery as a stress-reliever, but baseball and schoolwork keep his schedule crammed most days.

Considering Khoury’s presence on the varsity, playing time behind the plate figures to be a challenge as Rabin transitions from the sophomore team, but he is hopeful the time he’s putting into his craft this summer will pay off – next spring and beyond.

“I have to work hard, do my best and we’ll see what goes on from there,” Rabin said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen next year but all I know is I’m going to work hard and try my best.”

squad candidate (if he clears waivers). If Fales surprises and shows well in Bourbonnais and preseason games,

the Bears may not want to let him get to waivers, but it’s unlikely they’d want to enter the season with a rookie as

the No. 2 quarterback.

Clausen comes to camp with the hopes of proving he is not a bust – however, his current goal to make the team as a backup says a lot about the second-rounder and former Notre Dame star.

The other factor in a quarterback battle is to whom each is throwing, and who is in protection.

The second-team QB may look better purely based on the fact that he’ll have better options at wideout (Josh Morgan, Terrence Toliver) and on the line (Brian de la Puente, Eben Britton, James Brown). However, if a thirdor fourth-string quarterback elevates his offense with great throws, that will stand out, too, albeit against lower-tier defenses.

His base salary in 2014 will be $17.5 million, so instead of pending free agency being a topic of conversation at camp, making sure Cutler plays up to his contract will be a focal point.

Seeing McCown sign a two-year, $10 million contract in Tampa Bay has to excite Palmer and Clausen.

Granted, McCown only got that opportunity because of Cutler’s injury, and if No. 6 stays healthy, neither will get a chance to show what McCown did last year, but there is that potential. Both Palmer and Clausen are on one-year, minimum deals, and the goal is to win the backup job, impress if given any chance to play outside the preseason and cash in next offseason on a longer deal with some guaranteed money.

Keep an eye on: Clausen.

We have an idea of what Palmer can do, and Fales is a rookie without a projected high ceiling. Clausen, on the other hand, is a wild card.

He had to be humbled by his failures in Carolina, and we saw enough in his college career to wonder whether the tools are there to find success in the NFL. If the new environment and experience with Trestman pays off in Bourbonnais, the Bears could find themselves with another good backup.

It’s also certainly possible Clausen never catches on and flames out again in pursuit of changing his NFL story.

Overview: We know Jay Cutler can thrive in coach Marc Trestman’s system, but there are still questions the $126 million man has to answer in 2014, most importantly, can he stay healthy?

We probably won’t get an answer to that in Bourbonnais, but we can see whether he looks like the quarterback Trestman said is bigger and stronger than last season.

Expectations will be higher for Cutler and the rest of the offense in Year 2 under Trestman, so the scrutiny that comes with any poor practices in camp won’t be going away.

Outside of Cutler, the training camp focus will be on those behind him – Jordan Palmer, Jimmy Clausen and David Fales. This will be the first full camp with the Bears for each, and every rep will matter.

Position battle: Who will be this year’s Josh McCown? All winter and into the spring, we assumed (and had been told) it was Palmer’s job to lose, but a pectoral injury and the signing of Clausen turns this into an intriguing camp battle.

The fun part about a quarterback competition is the fact that we can measure it easily, charting passes in practice and preseason reps.

Palmer knows the offense best, Clausen may have the better skill set, while Fales needs to make an argument that the Bears should keep three quarterbacks, otherwise he may be a top practice

Domino effect Jimmy Waite hired as hasn’t affected Hawks goaltending coach Bulls just yet

As for Toews and Kane, the wait continues.

There’s no concern the deals – almost certain to be the biggest in league history, likely in the $10 million-to-$11 million range – will get done. It’s just a matter of when.

Bowman said last month he hoped they would be signed July 1, the first day of free agency.

But as time wears on, another possibility is the Hawks will announce the extensions to kick off the fan convention July 18. Last year, they announced Quenneville’s contract extension at the convention.

The Hawks also remain about $2.2 million above the salary cap and need to shed some payroll this summer.

No news really was good news for the Bulls on Monday, as it now seems that Carmelo Anthony’s indecisiveness shows that all the momentum that had him heading back to New York has hit some obstacles.

That’s a good thing.

“We still haven’t heard no,” a team source said Monday evening.

But neither have the Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, as Anthony definitely seems to be torn on the idea of max money in New York and Los Angeles or an instant contender with the Bulls.

An instant contender that will cost him about $54 million to sign with, however, as the Bulls have a four-year, $75-million offer on the table for the seven-time All-Star.

And while on the surface it appears to be a five-team race, it’s really not. It’s Knicks, Lakers and Bulls, in that order. The Rockets have already aggressively moved onto Plan B, trying to lure Chris Bosh over from Miami for a max deal, while the Mavericks were only given a few hours of Anthony’s time last week during his visit and didn’t make much of an impression.

So why the hold up?

Well, it’s obviously a decision that Anthony is weighing very carefully, but there’s also the LeBron James effect.

Four years later, and James is still messing with Bulls business. That’s what you call staying power.

The latest is that James will finally meet face-to-face with Miami team president Pat Riley in the next few days to hear a final pitch from the

former Hall of Fame coach.

The pot was sweetened on Monday, as Riley inked free agents Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger to verbal commitments.

So why does that mess with the Bulls?

Everything James does messes with league business these days. Despite the Bulls losing momentum in the Anthony sweepstakes, the feeling was he would only need the weekend to finalize a decision. With James undecided, however, and Bosh now being heavily courted by Houston, the idea of James and Anthony – who also are good friends – on the same roster isn’t entirely six feet under just yet.

That’s bad news for the Bulls on several fronts, with the obvious being the inability to become fully vested in Plan B. While they have already started taking steps toward moving on without Anthony, evident with the Nikola Mirotic talks, the visit to free agent Pau Gasol, as well as numerous calls on players like Chandler Parsons, Shawn Marion and Trevor Ariza, until they are given a not happening by Anthony, well, they’re just slow playing their hand.

A source did say that several more free agents were contacted Monday, but the message is the same: The Bulls are interested, but give them a few days.

And as far as the idea of Lance Stephenson to the Bulls, a call was made last week just to check in, and according to sources, Stephenson pricing himself as at least a $10-million-a-year player is not happening with the Bulls.

Not yet.

But a lot can change obviously.

After a quiet holiday weekend, the Blackhawks finally broke their silence Monday by hiring Jimmy Waite as their goaltending coach.

It wasn’t the anticipated contract extensions for Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane or a salary-clearing trade, but the Hawks checked off one of the last things left on their summer to-do list by hiring Waite – a former Hawks goalie and the younger brother of former goalie coach Stephane Waite – to replace Steve Weeks, who was fired by coach Joel Quenneville after only one season.

“I’m very excited to come back to the Chicago Blackhawks, the team that drafted me [eighth overall] in 1987,” Waite said in a statement. “I look forward to working with Corey [Crawford] and Ant-

ti [Raanta] and to help contribute to the success of this organization.”

Waite played in 58 games for the Hawks from 1988 to 1997. He also played for the San Jose Sharks and Phoenix Coyotes in a 22-year pro career spent mostly in the minor leagues.

He was the goalie coach for Chicoutimi of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the past three seasons. ‘‘We are pleased to welcome Jimmy back to our organization in his new role,” Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said. ‘‘He has over two decades of professional hockey experience and will be a great addition to our coaching staff.’’

Antiques auction galleries sell more than antiques. Folk art, design, modernism, fashion, fossils and dinosaurs, rocks and minerals, comics, movie memorabilia, political and space all are words that have been used to advertise recent sales. No longer do the sales feature only furniture, glass, silver, ceramics, toys, dolls and paper ephemera. A unique item was an ejection seat from a Vulcan jet bomber made in England. It was offered in a Hermann Historica auction in Munich, Germany, on May 9, 2014. The chrome ejection seat, dated July 15, 1974, is 56 inches high by 21 inches wide. The Vulcan, first made in 1952, was used by the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. It could fly at 52,000 feet and carried nuclear arms. The newest look in decorating is “tech,” and this seat with its perforated base, moveable arms and high curved back looks like a chair from the future. But it would seem destined for a space exploration museum, not a living room.

By EMILY YAHR The Washington Post Wearing long sleeves in the boiling heat of New York City last summer, Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine started to think that maybe his full-body tattoos weren’t such a great idea.

Acting in his first-ever movie role in the music dramedy “Begin Again,” playing a musician who experiences ups and downs on the roller coaster of fame, Levine was asked by director John Carney to cover his ink with sleeves. In the 95-degree weather. This wasn’t something Levine thought about when he got the tattoos – which make perfect sense for a pop star, although not for a big-screen actor.

But who could have predicted he would ever have that problem? Certainly not Levine, whose rise through the celebrity stratosphere has taken more unexpected turns than most.

From the early success of Maroon 5 to his pivot as a reality star on NBC’s “The Voice” to acting, Levine’s career has followed a curious path.

He claims he never plans ahead and just “rolls” with everything that has happened in the past several years – the shows, the movies, the endorsement and TV development deals. “I don’t think it’s smart to look too far into the future,” Levine said. “It’s a fine line between trying to manifest something to happen as far as your dreams are concerned, and then being too fixated on one thing happening one way.”

He’s speaking by phone from New York, doing the press rounds for “Begin Again,” which stars Mark Ruffalo as a down-on-his-luck record producer who meets a fledgling singer played by Keira Knightley. Levine plays Knightley’s music superstar boyfriend, who becomes her ex when he can’t resist the temptations of fame. Levine sounds a bit tired; it’s not yet noon and he claims he’s already done “17 zillion” interviews this morning.

True. Back when Levine and his high school friends started a band, he didn’t anticipate they would become the inescapable pop rockers Maroon 5. The group quickly found success in the early 2000s with monster debut album “Songs About Jane,” which featured smash singles “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love” and “Sunday Morning.” Even a decade later, “She Will Be Loved” is probably playing at this very moment over loudspeakers in various malls.

As often happens with a fast rise to fame, there have been a lot of detractors. As a lead vocalist with a unique falsetto and someone quite likely to bare his sculpted muscles for naked photo shoots, Levine attracted tabloid scrutiny from the beginning. With a confident swagger and tendency to spout quotes such as, “I love attention. I can’t stand not having it,” Levine (the first musician to become People’s Sexiest Man Alive) became a pop culture target. His parade of supermodel girlfriends – and engagement to Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo – didn’t really help matters.

“It’s strange that they’re so interested. I don’t think it’s that fascinating,” Levine said about the tabloid fascination with his personal life. “But hey, it’s flattering, I guess.”

Although Levine is self-deprecating, you do have to work hard to achieve the kind of multi-tiered success he’s enjoyed recently. While Maroon 5 stalled for several years in the mid-2000s, Levine catapulted back into the scene in January 2011 as a coach on “The Voice.”

Millions tuned in and were drawn to Levine’s banter and his odd-couple friendship with fellow coach Blake Shelton.

Along with filming “The Voice” for two seasons a year, Levine found himself back in the spotlight with music, releasing the giant hit “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring his “Voice” co-star Christina Aguilera. Maroon 5 released a new album in the summer of 2012 called “Overexposed” – interpret the title how you wish. It went platinum.

Levine’s real-life ups and downs with fame were intriguing to “Begin Again” writer and director Carney, who was looking for an actor to play the role of Dave Kohl, the singer who can’t stay down to earth once he gets a big record contract.

“I never really thought about anyone else in the role,” Carney said. He first consid-

ered Levine when he saw his brief but hilarious cameo in a “30 Rock” scene opposite Alec Baldwin.

The two chatted via Skype, and then Levine recorded himself in the studio reading some lines. Carney (who directed the Oscar-winning musical drama “Once”) saw the footage and was sold.

While Levine had done some acting before with a small part in the second season of FX’s gorefest “American Horror Story” – in which his character memorably got his arm ripped off – this was an entirely different situation.

And for him, it was pretty nerve-racking.

Luckily, he got the hang of the big-screen experience fairly quickly. Levine, who in the film complements his long sleeves with a rock-star beard, shares most of his scenes with Knightley. While he was hesitant about going up against such an established actress, they found an easy rapport through many hours filming scenes in a car together on the first day.

Carney was impressed by his performance. “I think he really delivered,” Carney said, citing his “star quality” along with his natural charisma and solid singing chops.

It helped that the Dave Kohl character wasn’t much of a stretch – in fact, there were a few scenes that hit a little too close to home for Levine. For example, Dave goes to a record label’s offices, where they tell him they love him and want him to be himself and not alter a thing – except for a few tiny fixes that wind up changing just about everything.

That, according to Levine, does not stray too far from the real-life recording industry.

“That’s all they do in those boardrooms in those meetings.

All they try to do is destroy the fabric of who you are because the record business is just silly,” he said. “ ‘Oh, you have to be this,’ or ‘You have to be that.’ But we never became successful by listening to them, so you take what they say with grain of salt.”

My generation (30s) is all about social media. “Unsure” mentioned that all the items she wanted to include were pre-Facebook. I am a bit old-fashioned (or maybe stubborn) so I don’t do Facebook or Twitter, and I don’t understand the importance of a “hashtag.” I have no idea how to Skype, nor do I pay my bills online.

I think the scrapbook idea is wonderful. There is something special about having tangible items to go along with important milestones and memories. Even if the gifts themselves don’t strike a chord with her friends, surely the consideration and time she puts into the scrapbooks will make her loved ones realize how important they are to her. Don’t use tablets as substitute for spending time with kids Dear Doctor K: I have an 18-month-old who loves to play on my iPad. I think it’s fine; my wife doesn’t. What are your thoughts?

Dear Reader: The only thing I can say for sure is that I’d rather have your toddler play with your iPad than with mine.

Seriously, you’ve asked an important question, because we see it everywhere: babies and toddlers playing with their parents’ tablets or smartphones.

Parents use these devices to entertain their children, and in the hope of helping them to learn.

Is this a good or a bad thing?

My pediatrician colleagues tell me they’re not sure, but here’s what they think: Early childhood is a time of rapid brain development. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 2 not have any “screen time” at all. This includes television, videos, computers and handheld devices. Their reasoning is that active, exploratory play, along with interaction with nurturing adults, is best for babies and toddlers. When a child is sitting in front of a screen, none of that happens.

We also know that when kids spend a lot of time in front of the

Fast-paced programming can get in the way of “executive function” skills, which are crucial for both academic and social success. They include planning, negotiating, trouble-shooting and delaying gratification.

Some experts argue that iPads and similar devices are different than television. True, like TV, playing with smartphones or tablets involves watching things on a screen. However, smartphones and tablets also are interactive; they are not passive experiences. And the smartphones or tablets can adjust to a child’s learning level. They also can be used with another person, like a parent, as part of play.

Studies are underway to see how these devices affect babies and young children, but it will be years before we have any definitive results. In the meantime, here is some advice based on what we know so far: • Don’t use these devices

to make your child smarter.

Old-fashioned play with blocks or dolls, listening to stories or playing at the park will do more for your child’s development than a tablet or smartphone.

• Limit use of these devices to under an hour a day, especially for young children.

• Choose apps carefully. The Common Sense Media website (www.commonsensemedia.org) has lots of useful information and reviews.

• Use the devices as part of your interactions with your child. Don’t simply leave the devices for your children to entertain themselves while you’re doing something else.

I wonder if this advice isn’t a bit too conservative. My instinct is that the interactivity of smartphones and tablets makes them devices that help toddlers solve puzzles. I’ll bet that two hours playing with one of these devices is better for brain development than two hours spent watching TV – but not better than two hours playing with a parent.

Dr. Wallace: About six months ago our church had a list of teens from England who wanted to be pen pals with an American teen. I’m 16 and selected a boy who is 17 and lives in Stratford, England. We have written to each other about a dozen times and have exchanged photographs and small gifts.

Dear Nameless: Trust between parent and teen is extremely important. Unless the trust is violated by you, your mother should respect your privacy and not open letters, or any other mail, addressed to you.

Mom is making a serious error when she does. I receive many letters and emails on this subject and they are always from girls who get their mail opened by their mothers.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 20 and had been dating a girl, 19, for over a year. Then one day out of the blue she announced that she wasn’t going to be seeing me any more because she had fallen in love with a guy who works with her. This came as an absolute shock to me because even in the last couple of weeks she had been telling me she loved me and would love me forever.

South is in six no-trump and West leads the heart jack. With the given hands, what should he do? And suppose the diamond king were only the queen. How would that affect declarer’s approach?

South’s leap to six no-trump with only 17 high-card points seems optimistic, but since North has shown at least a six-card club suit and all of South’s points are in aces and kings, it is a reasonable gamble.

South needs five club tricks to go with two spades, three hearts and two diamonds. As he can afford one club loser, declarer should take the first trick and cash dummy’s club ace. Here the king drops and South can claim.

But if the king does not appear, declarer crosses to his hand and leads a club toward dummy’s queen. The likelihood of success is about 72 percent.

Now let’s weaken the South hand by metamorphosing the diamond king into the queen.

South can get home with either five clubs and two diamonds, or six clubs and one diamond. To find out which way to turn, he should take the diamond finesse first. If it wins, he tackles clubs as just described. But if the diamond finesse loses, declarer needs six club tricks. He must play low to dummy’s queen and hope West started with exactly king-doubleton.
