Antique cars on display at Blackberry Farm On the Web

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – Ron Morin’s 1942 Dodge Weapons Carrier caught the attention of many people at Sunday’s antique car show at Blackberry Farm in Aurora.

“It’s popular,” said Morin, 65, who has owned the World War II vehicle for 12 years. “I bring it around to car shows and take it to parades.”

It was one of the many vehicles on display at the event.

Morin, a Vietnam veteran, is a former World War re-enactor.

“I liked bringing the history to the public,” he said.

“They didn’t realize what our soldiers went through in World War II.” He stores the vehicle in his garage. However, Morin must first take the gun off the top of it, “otherwise, it

Guy Miller, of Aurora, took advantage of Sunday’s sunny skies to attend the show.

“It’s a beautiful day, and I’m kind of a car lover myself,” Miller said.

He had his eye on a 1957

Chevrolet that was on display at the show, calling it “a beautiful car.”

Lee Hoeft’s shiny red 1937 Chevy Sedan also caught people’s attention at the show.

Hoeft, of Montgomery, said it took him nine years to restore the car.

“I like the era of the hot

rod,” Hoeft said.

Hoeft bemoaned that today’s cars all look the same, adding “the styles were a lot better back then.”

“Everything looked different,” he said.

Donavan Langley, 16, of Aurora was snapping photos of different cars at the show that caught his eye, including a 1968 Chevy SS Nova.

“All of these cars would be awesome to have,” Langley said.

He admired how well the cars were maintained.

“Even the rims of the tires look excellent,” Langley said.

“You can tell that they polish them.”

Geneva counseling center plans free sleep seminar KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A Geneva-based counseling center will hold a free sleep seminar Wednesday in Batavia, according to a news release.

Dr. Jessica Andrews, a therapist at Intermission Therapies, will discuss the benefits of restorative sleep, the release states. The seminar will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday at Panera Bread, 154 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

The center’s staff hopes that the seminar will help

residents create healthy sleep patterns so they have enough rest to function at their optimal level.

Andrews will explain that the quality as well as the quantity of sleep is vital to overall health.

This includes making sure sleep is uninterrupted through the night and achieving REM sleep, which is when the body does most of its repair work, according to the release.

“People don’t understand that what they’re doing during the day is going to affect how they sleep later on,” Andrews wrote in the release.

Friends help GHS grad in cancer fight Fundraiser set for mother of 2

By MADELINE HAPPOLD mhappold@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The gift of life can be given or taken in an instant. For 1995 Geneva High School graduate Kathleen O’Malley, it only took three days for her life to go from blessed to in jeopardy.

On Jan. 19, O’Malley’s 38th birthday, she finally received the gift she had been waiting for. After three years of fertility treatment, O’Malley and her husband, Matt, were gifted with a set of twins: Sean, a boy, and Shea, a girl.

After a series of quick visits, O’Malley was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer that Thursday – Jan. 22.

“Immediately my first thought was, you know, ‘How am I going to beat this? I want to live to see these babies grow up,’ ” she said.

Unfortunately, coping with breast cancer is not entirely

new for O’Malley. Her mother died from breast cancer in 1989, when O’Malley was 12.

“I immediately remembered her symptoms from chemotherapy and seeing what she went through,” she said.

After seeing her mother’s battle with breast cancer, O’Malley was cautious and began getting mammograms at age 30, along with monthly checkups. After receiving false information that she would not need to be tested for any BRCA – BReast CAncer – gene mutations since her sister tested negative, O’Malley never considered a test of her own, she said.

Unfortunately, O’Malley was a carrier for a BRCA gene mutation.

Always a fighter, though, O’Malley has already completed five weeks of chemothera-

py. On July 1 she underwent surgery for a double mastectomy. The recovery stage likely will last more than six weeks, and during that time she will be unable to lift or carry her two infants, she said.

“She is a warrior to all of us,” said Tiffany Minderman, a longtime friend of O’Malley and fellow GHS graduate.

COVER STORY ‘HOOKED’ ON MARATHONS 75-year-old says ‘I just plod along ... for my age, it’s somewhat respectable’

ENEVA – On a recent morning as the sun was just coming up, a solitary runner made his way on Geneva’s residential streets.

From State Street to Kaneville Road to South Street, Bill Rex, 75, of Geneva was on his daily four- to fivemile run.

It is the only training he does for all of the 26.2-mile marathons he runs, Rex said.

He said the tally so far is 413, having just finished one last month in Dubuque, Iowa.

He said he will do a double marathon July 25 and 26 in New Mexico.

“Two for the price of one,” Rex said. “Just to save money on travel.”

Rex said he does not need much recovery time between marathons.

“I’m OK the next day,” he said.

Rex ranked 44th among marathon runners listed at the USA and North America Megamarathon Ranking 300+ as of Dec. 31, 2014. At that point, he had participated in 404 marathons, according to its website.

Why so many marathons?

“When I get hooked on something, I’m compulsive,” Rex said.

“I ran my first one at Waubonsee Community College when I was 39 in 1979,” Rex added. “From 1979 to 1995, all I did was 5K and 10K [runs]. I did not get serious about [marathons] until 1995.

Something clicked, and it’s a hobby that has taken over my life since then. It was ‘go big or don’t go at all.’ ” Rex has run marathons in all 50 states multiple times and in Canada. His home office has drawers full of medals and walls covered with photos and trophies.

able to break four hours. Now I’m a six-hour-plus person,” Rex said. “I just kind of plod

along, and I get to the finish.

For my age, it’s somewhat respectable.”

Rex said he is partially retired, still working three days a week doing deliveries for a family business. Rex said he realizes not many his age can run a marathon, let alone multiple marathons.

“I know my time is limited and I’m going to reach a point where I’m not able to do it any more,” Rex said. “As of

today, I feel good. I still have my passion.”

Rex said he has collected so many marathon T-shirts, he donates most of them to Purple Heart Veterans.

“I’m not that sentimental,” Rex said.

His wife, Cathleen Rex, said in 2000, when Rex turned 60, they had little medals made for a party to mark his 100th marathon. When he completed his 200th marathon in 2004, Cathleen Rex said they just hosted a party for family.

And when her husband had completed more than 300 marathons in 2010, they had another party, she said.

“I don’t have a favorite place to run,” Rex said. “My favorite is the last one I finished.”

North Aurora trustees not ready to allow them

Batavia residents have been able to raise chickens in their backyards since May 2011.

The city of Batavia has issued 19 chicken coop permits since 2011, according to Batavia code enforcement officer Rhonda Klecz, who also is North Aurora’s part-time code enforcement officer.

Batavia aldermen voted to allow the chickens with certain restrictions, including a prohibition on roosters. In addition, the maximum number of hens that a household can have is eight.

Chickens also must be kept in an enclosure that is a minimum of 32 square feet, and chicken coops must be at least 30 feet away from any neighboring houses.

NORTH AURORA – Village trustees in North Aurora are not ready to allow residents to raise backyard chickens.

Trustees on Monday debated the issue. While communities such as Batavia, St. Charles and Naperville allow backyard chickens, Geneva, Elburn and Sugar Grove all ban them.

A North Aurora couple was recently cited by the village for having residential chickens, which is how the issue came up. Village Trustee Laura Curtis was opposed to the idea of allowing backyard chickens. She said if people want farm animals, they should live elsewhere.

“I think we are opening up a can of worms,” she said.

“Where does it stop? What if a person said they wanted a cow?”

Curtis said she also was concerned about the impact that backyard chickens would have on neighbors living next to the chickens, along with property values.

Village President Dale Berman said he thought chickens would be “a lot better than barking dogs.” But Berman said he didn’t see overwhelming support for the idea.

In addition, two trustees were absent from the meeting. Staff had recommended that if the village chose to adopt a residential chicken ordinance, that it should be modeled after Batavia’s ordinance.

Aldermen reject proposed liquor store Say business wouldn’t be appropriate use for site

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles aldermen Monday night could not support a liquor store proposed for a property surrounded by residences.

The aldermen, meeting as the Government Operations Committee, voted unanimously in favor of denying a Class

A1 liquor license to Depot Liquor 2. The store would have been located at 710 S. Third St. in St. Charles.

The location was selected in part because it would have allowed Minesh Patel the opportunity to manage and own the store as well as the property it would have been located on.

“We’re trying to serve the

community, we’re not trying to change the community,” Patel said.

Two residents of the neighborhood disagreed with Patel, saying that the store was not welcome on the property, which is zoned for business but is surrounded by residences and a park across the street.

“I’m not against anyone trying to make a living … but

this is not a good fit for our community and our neighborhood for sure,” St. Charles resident Jenny Santos said.

Santos’ daughter, Emma, 12, also spoke at the meeting, saying that she would not feel comfortable walking her dog or riding her bike past the liquor store.

Ward 3 Alderman Bill Turner said that if children are fearful of even walking past the proposed store, then he should factor that into his

consideration to vote against the license.

“I think you got a nice store [but] bad location,” Turner said.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina, who is also the city’s liquor commissioner, recommended the aldermen approve the license.

Before they voted, he asked rhetorically what might happen to the condition of the site if no business were able to move into the property.

City OKs cost-sharing of State Street project Is seeking grants to help pay for it

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously approved a resolution Monday stating that Geneva will meet its local match of nearly $18 million – or 20 percent – in connection with its reconstruction of East State Street between Water

Street and Glengarry Drive.

The Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors’ funding programs for its Surface Transportation Program requires a 20 percent local match, officials said.

Geneva’s match would be spread over a two-year construction period beginning in 2018, officials said.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the city’s share would come from its motor fuel tax and other grant sources as part of Geneva’s overall street program.

The 1.35-mile East State Street project would add lanes, improve intersections, signals and lights, and involve resurfacing, sidewalks and bike lanes, according to its application to the council of mayors.

The proposed improvements to East State Street would occur along the east side of the Fox River and provide pedestrian and bike connectivity linking Kirk Road to downtown Geneva, according to the application.

The city has already paid

more than $262,000 for phase one engineering and $900,000 for phase two engineering, which is currently underway, officials said.

Geneva also secured $1.2 million in landscaping funding through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, and $2.5 million from the Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors for the project, officials said.

According to the resolution, the city is seeking an additional $10.6 million through

the Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors’ current call for projects in an effort to get state funds for the balance of the project.

Aldermen also approved submitting a separate funding request to the council of mayors for a $1.1 million grant for resurfacing South Street and South Seventh Street between Kaneville Road and West State Street. The city would have to fund up to $600,000 if its application is accepted, officials said.

James V. McLaughlin, age 91, of St. Charles, passed away surrounded by his family, July 3, 2015.

He was born August 12, 1923, in Elgin, IL to Leslie and Gladys McLaughlin. After graduating from Elgin H.S. Jim enlisted in the Navy, and served on the USS LST 986 in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to Elgin and was employed by DuKane Corp. for over 40 years. He raised his family with his beloved wife of 61 years, Lois, in St. Charles. He was a member of the V.F.W and American Legion, of St. Charles, the Boy Scouts of America, Aurora Sportsman’s Club, and the LST Association. Jim was an avid sportsman, he loved to hunt, fish, and shoot. He and his wife Lois also enjoyed wood-working.

Helen T. Pugh, age 93, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2015, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born May 25, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois, to Victoria (Kumorowski) and Walter Adamczyk who were Polish immigrants. Her brothers were Joseph, Edward and Frank.

Helen met Clyde (Sterling Calvin) Pugh, a strapping young military man and mechanical engineer in the U.S. Air Force, when she was 20 years old. Their romance began before Clyde was deployed for the first time during WWII. While Clyde was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, tracking weather across multiple countries, Helen corresponded with him via handwritten letters that took up to two weeks to deliver. When he returned from the war, they were married in 1945, began a family in Chicago, Illinois

and later moved to South Holland prior to relocating to St. Charles in 1966.

They had two daughters, Mary Jeanne and Cynthia. While in St. Charles, they built a beautiful house, where Clyde enjoyed being heavily involved in the construction. Helen held many interesting jobs, including performing all secretarial work for local companies and she loved to volunteer at schools, churches and the local hospital, where she spent a lot of her time caring for patients there. Mary Jeanne became a music teacher who loved teaching children in many of the areas around St. Charles and Aurora. Cynthia became an audiologist, who helped Helen with her hearing later in life.

Helen was a wonderful mother, a loving grandmother and a fantastic great-grandmother. She loved to play cards and Scrabble, make traditional Polish dishes like perogis and plum dumplings and attend church. She could often be heard on the phone speaking polish. She made many pilgrimages to Medjugorje with Clyde where she enjoyed learning about the rich history of the region and praying in many sacred areas. She celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary with Clyde before he passed away at the age of 91.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jeanne Pugh, St. Charles, IL; her other daughter, Cynthia Ellison and son-in-law, Kenneth Ellison, Franklin TN; her granddaughter, Amy Murphy; grandson-in-law, Josh Murphy; and great-granddaughter, Abigail Murphy, Brentwood, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victoria and Walter; her brothers, Joseph, Edward and Frank; and her beloved husband, Clyde.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 9, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at 9:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 6N491 Crane Rd, St. Charles, IL. Ex-baseball player a hit at fundraiser

By MADELINE HAPPOLD mhappold@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – At almost 90 years old, Terry Donahue, a former member of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, still has as much spunk as when she played professionally in the 1940s.

On Friday night, Donahue was the featured guest during the All-American Baseball Night program at Hosanna! Lutheran Church in St. Charles.

Wheeled out onto the knoll between the church and its parking lot, Donahue held a mitt in her left hand, a baseball in her right. As she and those pushing her wheelchair reached the makeshift pitching mound of the shrunken baseball diamond, patrons seemed to assume Donahue would remain seated for the first pitch.

But once settled, Donahue shot up as those surrounding her gasped and helped her steady herself. She set her feet, swung her arm back and gently threw the ball to fellow parishioner and young female athlete Lyla Pihl.

The crowd hollered and applauded, but Donahue didn’t stop there. She continued to throw one pitch after another. Five minutes later, she threw a self-satisfying pitch and, with some help, lowered herself into the wheelchair, glove still in hand.

Oddly enough, Donahue wasn’t a pitcher, but primarily a catcher and utility player for the Peoria Redwings from 1946 to 1949. As more and more men were sent to fight overseas in World War II, Chicago Cubs owner Philip Wrigley couldn’t stand to see his stadium empty. Determined not to have America’s pastime come to a standstill, he created the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, recruiting women such as Donahue across the U.S. and Canada.

“People thought they would get a good laugh,” Donahue said, referring to watching women play, “but we were pretty good.” She

said the games drew “wonderful” crowds, proving women could play a man’s game – and do it while dressed in skirts.

“They were strong, independent women doing what they love,” said Lois Voth, friend of Donahue and fellow parish member at Hosanna!

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, Donahue was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. She was also inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, in 1988, when the AAGPBL was inducted as a league.

She was even the basis for a character in the 1992 movie, “A League of their Own,” featuring Madonna.

Never one to slow down, Donahue urges other young women to follow what they love.

“If you have the talent and desire, go for it,” Donahue said Friday. During that event, she also spent time sitting in front of a table topped with memorabilia and greeted other parishioners, sharing advice and stories, along with some photos.

The All-American Baseball Night also featured pickup baseball games, a radar station to measure pitching speed and a stand to decorate signs for a Fourth of July run and walk.

Members of Hosanna! Lutheran Church were excited to have Donahue at their event, not only as a beloved parish member but as a symbol of American history.

“It’s an important part of our history, and her story is amazing,” said Lynette Anderson, director of children and family ministries at Hosanna! “It’s wonderful to lift Terry up.”

Associate pastor James Lotz agreed.

“We have some treasures,” Lotz said. “People don’t realize that people like this are in the community.”

Donahue was equally as excited to help out her parish.

“Anytime there’s baseball I’m ready to go,” she said.

Mr. Downen was preceded in death by his wife, Allie Mozel Baker Downen; his son, Larry G. Downen; his daughter, Jeanette L. Downen; his parents, Delbert Hubert Downen and Mabel Ferlene Pearce Downen.

Mr. Downen was a painter and parts manager of Aurora Truck Body in Aurora, Illinois and he worked in the Housing Department at The University of Tennessee at Martin.

He was a veteran, U.S. Navy, and a member of Bible Union Baptist Church.

Mr. Downen is survived by her daughter, Beverly C. Dickenson of DeKalb, IL; his sister, Patsy Ann (Gene) O’Neal of Carmi, IL; his brother-in-law, Fred House of Martin; one grandchild, Cheryl Crutchfield; two great-grandchildren, Allie Elizabeth Crutchfield and Katherine Helynn Crutchfield.

Being “green” is not a new idea. Our ancestors recycled and reused precious pieces of fabrics, broken dishes and glass, iron, tin and more. Textiles often were woven on a loom at home until the mid-1850s. For most families there was no nearby store with a replacement, and no way to order something to be delivered until Victorian times. The Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog (1894-present) was not the first, but it was the most famous catalog, and others followed.

Although the catalog offered quilts and pictures, someone, probably a talented housewife, stitched a decorative panel of the silk bands that came on cigars. The bands were pieced together then fringe was added. Sample pieces of woolen cloth, sometimes with the paper label still attached, cotton fabric from flour sacks, and pieces of old dresses were recycled into larger pieced and patchwork quilts. Because the cigar bands are very small, they were not often re-used. But today’s collectors of advertising, cigarrelated items and quilts would want this unusual piece. It was made in the midto late 19th century. And although it only was a 23-inch square mounted in a 32-inch metal frame, it sold at a March 2015 Brunk auction in Asheville, N.C., for $1,200. *** Q: I have a 5 1/2-inch Hummel pitcher in the shape of a monk who happens to have crossed eyes. My family has all five. Can you tell me if these really are a rare find, and how much they are worth?

A: Germany’s Goebel Porcelain Factory introduced the popular Friar Tuck series in the early 1950s. Friar Tuck was the roly-poly monk who kept Robin Hood and his Merry Men on the straight and narrow. About 125 everyday table items were made, including sugars and creamers, salt and pepper shakers, condiment sets, toothpick holders, mugs and pitchers. Your pitcher is one of the No. 141 line of four pitchers that were made in graduated sizes from 2 1/2 inches to 8 inches. Older models of the No. 141 pitchers were made, intentionally, with crossed eyes. While they are rarer than pitchers with regular eyes, the rarity is minimal for collectors and they sell for only a few dollars more. Your pitchers are worth about $25 to $30 each. Friar Tuck pieces should not be confused with Hummel figurines, also made by Goebel, because they are not based on drawings

A: The colorful Fiesta dinnerware was introduced in 1936 by Homer Laughlin China Co. of Newell, West Virginia. Original Fiesta colors were blue (cobalt), red, light green, ivory and yellow. Turquoise followed in 1937. After World War II, decorating tastes changed from bright to more subdued colors. In 1951, the company discontinued the original blue, light green and ivory, continued to use turquoise and yellow, and added softer colors, chartreuse, gray, rose and forest green. They are called Fiesta’s “fifties colors” and were used until 1959. The Fiesta line was retired in 1972, but Homer Laughlin Co. started making the dishes again in 1986 in new colors, black, white, apricot and cobalt blue. LOCAL BRIEF Investigation continues into North Aurora crash

NORTH AURORA – Illinois State Police on Monday did not release any new information about a crash involving a mo-

torcycle and a semitrailer truck that happened at 11:30 a.m.

Sunday at Interstate 88 and Route 31 in North Aurora.

The agency continues to investigate the crash. The

motorcyclist was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove by the North Aurora Fire Department.

North Aurora Fire Capt. Adam Miller said the truck driver did

not need to go to a hospital.

Miller said he did not know the condition of the motorcyclist.

The right and center lanes of I-88 and Route 31 had been

closed immediately after the crash.

No one has been charged in the crash while it remains under investigation.

Three hurt in Sugar Grove crash Sunday

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Three people were injured Sunday night in a crash involving three vehicles at the intersection of Route 56 and Galena Boulevard, Sugar Grove Police Chief Pat Rollins said.

The incident took place at 10:12 p.m. Sunday. Rollins said three people were taken to hospitals, and the driver of one vehicle was taken from the scene via helicopter. Rollins said alcohol is suspected as a cause of the crash, but he said nobody had been charged as of Monday afternoon.

Rollins did not reveal the names of those involved in the crash, but he said a 27-yearold woman was driving a 2013 Nissan vehicle west on Galena Boulevard and drove through a red light.

He said the Nissan hit a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse,

which had a green light and was coming off a ramp to head east on Galena Boulevard.

The Traverse was driven by a 27-year-old man and included a 27-year-old female passenger, Rollins said.

The third vehicle was at the red light and was struck by debris from the crash, Rollins said, adding that debris was spread 100 yards in different directions.

Rollins said both people in the Traverse were taken to Presence Mercy Medial Center in Aurora. He said the driver of the Nissan was taken via helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

The third vehicle had minor damage, and Rollins said nobody in that vehicle required hospitalization. He said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, but the driver of the Nissan suffered serious injuries.

NORTH AURORA – North Aurora resident Gaby Tessitore said she hopes the bikinis she designs are as flattering as they can be to her customers.

Tessitore’s online company, Copa Bikinis, specializes in Brazilian bikini bottoms that are designed to provide a visual “lift” effect. Tessitore is a native of Brazil.

She started the company last year. Tessitore designs the Brazilian bikinis – which come in several different styles – and they are manufactured in Brazil.

“American bikinis don’t look as flattering as Brazilian bikinis,” she said. “The bikinis in the back have a “U” cut.”

In comparison, she said Brazilian bikinis have a “V” cut, which she said is more flattering to the person wearing the swimsuit.

“The ‘V’ cut, combined with superior material like Lycra, creates the effect of lifting your bottom, instead of looking saggy,” Tessitore said. “It looks much better.

It doesn’t matter about your body shape or anything. It makes it look amazing.”

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Our architectural gems

To the Editor: Geneva is known for the charm of its historic buildings, stately trees, colorful street gardens, tantalizing restaurants, unique shopping areas, award-winning schools and welcoming residents. Each year, thousands of tourists come to our town and support our businesses. Much of this is because of the unique architecture of our business district and our truly lovely historic homes.

This draw is due in part to the many residents and business owners who love their historic properties. They lavish attention upon their buildings using the guidance provided by Geneva’s Historic Preservation Ordinance. This ordinance was written during the 1980s and ’90s, and it has been very successful in maintaining the quality of historic properties within Geneva. We have a flourishing downtown, whereas other towns that have not been so nurturing of their building stock do not.

Presently, this ordinance has been updated using a lengthy process of review and revision by Geneva staff, residents and the Historic Preservation Commission. The proposed revision of Geneva’s Historic Preservation Ordinance has been called a model ordinance by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, Landmarks Illinois, and Fox Valley Preservation Partners.

Geneva’s City Council is reviewing this proposed ordinance and has pulled out key provisions to scrutinize. These provisions have proven to be useful nationwide and in Illinois communities to protect historic properties from abuse. The Geneva City Council is now considering weakening the provisions that have made Geneva’s historic preservation program so successful. Some council members are proposing poorly tested and unvetted methods to protect our architectural gems from demolition – rather than using the methods found in the original ordinance that have passed the test of time.

Consequences of Greek referendum’s ‘no’

By heeding their government’s advice and voting “no” in the referendum Sunday, Greek citizens sent an unambiguous message – they are demanding the rest of Europe acknowledge their distress.

Here are 10 consequences of the vote that could unfold in the next few days: 1. The victory of the “no” camp – with more than 60 percent of the vote, according to preliminary returns – will initially lead to a general selloff in global equities, along with price pressures on the bonds issued by Greece, other peripheral euro zone economies and emerging markets.

German and U.S. government bonds will benefit from a flight to quality.

2. Having been caught off guard, European politicians will urgently seek to regain the initiative: Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and President Francois Hollande of France were scheduled to meet Monday in Paris to work on a response. In a perfect world, these leaders would move quickly and effectively with the Greek government to get past the conflict and acrimony that preceded the referendum.

3. The horrid conditions in Greece will get a lot worse before they

improve. Without huge emergency assistance from the European Central Bank – a decision that faces long odds – the government will find it hard to get money to the country’s automated teller machines, let alone re-open the banks.

4. As hoarding increases, shortages of goods, including fuel and food, will intensify. Capital and payments controls will be tightened. The economy will take another worrisome step down, worsening unemployment and poverty.

5. As a result, the government will be under mounting pressure to issue some type of IOUs to maintain a sense of a functioning economy. If it does, the IOUs will take on the role of a parallel currency, quoted domestically at a discount to the single currency.

6. Outside Greece, a lot of thought will be given to limiting adverse spillovers. The ECB will most likely have to roll out new measures to contain regional contagion, including expanding the current program of large-scale purchases of securities.

7. All parties involved will find themselves slipping into their Plan B mode. This transition will probably be much more traumatic for Greece than for the rest of Europe.

8. With the ultimate goal of countering as quickly as possible the likelihood of further human suffering,

pain and uncertainty, Europe has the instruments and institutions to limit contagion and maintain the integrity of the euro zone. But this will require ECB action to be coupled with measures by the European Stability Mechanism and the European Investment Bank aimed at completing a banking union and making progress on fiscal integration.

9. It is quite doubtful, however, Greece will be able to restore its status as a full member of the euro zone. Indeed, without very skillful crisis management, it is at high risk of becoming a failed state.

10. Finally, expect an explosion of blame. This unproductive activity may end up delaying Europe’s urgent need to internalize the lessons from this sad outcome: A series of broken reform promises by several Greek governments was made worse by political stubbornness, poor analysis and inconsistent follow-through by Europe, which is contributing to the loss of Greece as a functioning member of the family.

Sure, people were watching to supporting their country as Independence Day weekend concluded, but it is becoming evident people genuinely are starting to follow and care about soccer.

Geneva girls soccer coach Megan Owens, who was active on the program’s Twitter and Facebook pages for every game of the World Cup, decided to watch the game at home. She joked that coaches get into the game much more and staying home allowed her to watch and not become distracted.

“We also had a bracket challenge for the games to try and keep the girls tuned in as well,” Owens said. “It’s really a promising outcome for the sport of soccer because I think the only game of the (1999)

Cup (the United States’ most recent championship) that you could watch without cable was the final.

“It really is promising for this generation growing up and seeing this sport continue to grow in popularity. It helps when the team does well, but there was such a big involvement on social media and people were tuned in and really excited to watch these games.”

Whether it was everyone uniting to support the country or people genuinely caring about the games, there is no denying that public interest in soccer has come a long way.

With both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams playing the best soccer they have in recent memory, it’s hard to think that popularity will do anything but continue to grow in the future.

Kaneland girls soccer player Gabby Cano had planned to meet her friends at Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the U.S. Women’s National Team take on Japan in the World Cup Final on Sunday, but was going to be a little late because she had to work.

She thought being five minutes late wouldn’t be a big deal, with this being the rematch of the most recent World Cup final, a 2011 match that needed penalty kicks to decide a champion.

Cano walked in and passed several TVs with a 2-0 score showing in the sixth minute. At first glance, she thought the game hadn’t started yet and replays of a different game were being shown at the restaurant in Geneva Commons.

“I literally thought, ‘It can’t be 2-0 already ... can it?’ ” Cano said. “I sat down and looked up and asked my friends, even though it was on the screen, because I could not believe it.”

Cano, who watched with Knights’ teammates Carli Lloyd Nicole Kockza, Holly Collingbourne and Paige Guyton, did see Carli Lloyd cap off her remarkable hat trick in the first 15 minutes with a goal from midfield to help the United States become the first national team with three Women’s World Cup championships in a 5-2 victory over Japan.

The match was the most watched soccer game in the history of American TV, with 26.7 million viewers tuning into Fox on Sunday evening.

Cano’s Kaneland teammates Kiandra Powell, Taylor Emigh and Ashley Crotteau attended the viewing part in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, where many fans went to watch the game on a giant 19-by-33 foot, high-definition screen.

“It was a crazy atmosphere,” Powell said. “I think the best part of it all was just seeing how many people came out to support. It actually gave you kind of a glimpse what it was like to be at an actual game.”

Powell said the excitement and volume level of the crowds became increasingly louder with each goal. But as with Cano’s reaction, there was almost a sense of disbelief that in a matter of minutes from the opening whistle, the game got out of hand ... quickly.

With this World Cup being played in Canada, it allowed for most of the U.S. games to be played at night, when most people were home from work to watch games.

But as is often seen with the Super Bowl or, more recently, with the Black-

Sale named to AL All-Star team

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com White Sox left-hander Chris Sale was named to the American League All-Star team Monday. It will be his fourth consecutive appearance.

The announcement came as no surprise as the Sox lefthander was preparing to become the first pitcher to record 10 or more strikeouts in nine consecutive games Monday night when the Sox host the Toronto Blue Jays and former Sox Mark Buehrle.

Sale was the only Sox named to represent the AL team in Cincinnati on July 14.

Sale (6-4, 2.87 ERA), who joins left-hander Billy Pierce (1955 to 59) as the only Sox

pitchers to make at least four consecutive All-Star teams, is on pace to record a franchise-record 289 strikeouts, which would be the highest total since Arizona Diamondback Randy Johnson struck out 290 in 2004. He is averaging 12.28 strikeouts per nine innings.

Sale is a candidate to be named the starting pitcher for the AL. He has pitched in three All-Star games, all in relief, allowing one run in one inning at the 2014 game after pitching a scoreless inning in 2012 and two perfect ininnings 2013, when he was the winning pitcher.

“There are a couple other guys I feel the same way about. It will be a tough decision for the manager (Ned Yost).”

Dallas Keuchel of the Houston Astros and Chris Archer of the Tampa Bay Rays also are considered candidates to be the AL starting pitcher, who won’t be named till next week.

Sale is in line to pitch against the Cubs on Saturday at Wrigley Field. That would give him two days rest, which is considered enough for a one- or two-inning All-Star Game appearance.

Sale is 4-3 with a 1.78 ERA with only 12 walks and 115 strikeouts in his past 10 starts covering 76 innings.

He leads the majors in strikeouts per nine innings (12.28), is tied for the lead in strikeouts and ranks among the AL leaders in strikeout-towalk ratio (second, 6.41), quality starts (tie for second, 12), WHIP (third, 0.97) and ERA (9th).

Cubs’ Bryant, Rizzo named NL All-Star reserves: Cubs rookie

third baseman Kris Bryant and first baseman Anthony Rizzo were named to the National League All-Star team Monday.

Bryant is an injury replacement for the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton. He was selected by Giants and NL manager Bruce Bochy.

Rizzo was selected by the players.

Hirsch was coming off an outing against the Cougars last Zach Hirsch month where he allowed just one run in eight innings of work in a no-decision at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Cougars eventually won, 2-1, in extra innings.

In 99 percent of the cases it would be OK. But in light of what we see in the news, it’s your job as a mother to err on the side of caution, and I don’t recommend it.

Nutrition facts label will help with choosing healthy cereal Dear Doctor K: I love to eat cereal for breakfast, but I’ve heard that many cereals aren’t all that healthy. What should I look for in a healthy cereal?

Dear Reader: Walk into any grocery store and you’ll see shelves packed full of breakfast cereals all touting important health benefits.

Labels and marketing promises on boxes can be confusing – and sometimes misleading. I spoke with Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She recommends reading ingredient lists carefully and choosing cereals that meet the following criteria: • Whole grains. Many cereals are made with refined grains, which are full of carbohydrates that easily and rapidly turn into simple sugars. The absorption of these sugars from the gut causes your blood sugar to spike. These spikes cause your pancreas to “overwork” making insulin. This, in turn, can raise a person’s risk of getting Type 2 diabetes, the most common kind of diabetes.

Instead, look for a breakfast cereal made of corn, whole wheat or brown rice. These are whole

• Fiber is the indigestible component of plant food that’s vital for good health. It lowers blood sugar and cholesterol, and it can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Women should consume 21 to 25 grams of fiber per day, while men should aim for 30 to 38 grams per day. Look for cereals that contain 5 or more grams of fiber per serving.

• Low sugar. Choose cereals that provide no more than 5 grams of sugar per serving. Unfortunately, that may be easier said than done. Most cold cereals in the United States come preloaded with added sugars. To know how much sugar you’re getting, read the Nutrition Facts label on the side of the cereal box. And avoid

cereals that have been “frosted” with layers of sugar.

• Low sodium. Sodium hides in many unexpected foods, and cereal is one of them. The current dietary guidelines recommend limiting sodium to 2,300 mg per day. For people 51 and older, and those of any age who are African-American or who have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease, guidelines recommend no more than 1,500 mg per day. So look for cereals with no more than 200 mg of sodium per serving.

• Low calories. Most cereals list a serving size as one cup or just three-quarters of a cup. That’s far less than the average bowl can hold. Your best bet is to look for cereals with less than 150 calories per serving. Then, use a measuring cup when serving yourself.

Finally, complement your cereal with some low-fat milk for protein and calcium, and add fresh fruit for natural sweetness and fiber.

I’m 16, get great grades, have tons of friends, teach Sunday school to younger children at our church and love my community, my school, my country and God. Honestly, Dr. Wallace, I’m a good kid. When I have a daughter, I want her to be just like me.

I have never smoked, consumed alcohol, taken drugs or been in any kind of trouble either at home or at school. I also play the piano and sing.

My relatives call me “Miss Teenage America” and have encouraged me to try out for the national junior miss contest held annually.

I love animals and my dog and I share a mutual admiration. If all of this sounds too good to be true, it’s not. All of what I have presented to you is 100 percent truth!

Now comes the difficult part. My parents, especially my mother, are extremely strict. I have no problem with their being strict, but I do have a problem with my mom not trusting me. She listens in on my telephone calls, opens and reads my mail, snoops in my room and even smells my breath when I come home after spending time with friends. I know for a fact that she even spies on me when I go out on a date. I’ve seen her, but when I get home and question her about seeing her spy on me, she always denies it.

When I tell my mother she’s making my life miserable by her lack of trust in me, she says that parents need to know what their kids are doing and snooping is a way of finding out.

Then she says the tragedy in Colorado would have been averted if the parents of the guy who

The secret is open, honest communication, which is only possible in an atmosphere of mutual trust.

Certainly adolescence is a time of new dangers and temptations, but in families where trust and love are abundant, the parents know their children well and gradually increase the children’s freedom to use their own judgment.

When this trust breaks down – when the teen becomes involved in unwholesome activities or gets into the habit of lying – closer supervision becomes necessary to get him or her back on track. This may include snooping and spying, but it’s an extreme measure and should never be employed when not absolutely necessary.

And it certainly doesn’t appear necessary in your case.

Just so parents who read this column will understand, allow me to define the word “snoop”: “To pry into the private affairs of others, especially by prowling about.” Are there times when parents should snoop? Sure. But the wise, caring parent knows the dangers of this activity, and does so reluctantly.

How did the defense go against four spades following West’s diamond-10 lead?

After East’s opening bid and South’s overcall, West made a negative double. That showed four hearts, but she might have held five hearts in a hand too weak for a two-heart response. Then, North was overly exuberant. She should have settled for a game-invitational sequence. (This could have been via an old-fashioned jump to three spades or a modern three-diamond cue-bid raise.) But with a surge of adrenaline, she bid four spades, hoping either that the contract would sneak home or that her opponents would make an indiscreet foray at the five-level. East was tempted with her strong hand, but allowed her quasi-balanced pattern to dissuade her from going higher.

East won the first trick with her diamond ace and accurately shifted to the heart six. Now West, correctly judging that this was not a singleton, put in her jack.

South won with dummy’s queen and led a trump, but East dashed in with her ace and played her second heart. West won with her ace and returned the suit, which East ruffed to defeat the contract. Perfection!
