LOOKING FORWARD Batavia Depot Museum to host quilt, textile show BATAVIA – The Batavia Depot Museum will host the ninth annual Quilt & Textile Show. The show runs from 1 to 6 p.m. July 17, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18 and July 19 at the Eastside Community Center and Shannon Hall, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia. The cost is $6 for the general public and $5 for seniors ages 60 and older. Children ages 10 and younger are free. Service men and women are free with a military ID. This year’s show will have an exhibit featuring patriotic quilts in honor of Flag Day. A vendor hall features unique items for sale. Crowds flock to Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles for July 4 festivities

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The fireworks show wasn’t the only thing families enjoyed Saturday at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave. in St. Charles.

Hundreds of people swam, golfed, ate and listened to music in the hours leading up to the large and colorful fireworks show at the park after sundown.

The St. Charles Park District has offered a fireworks celebration for several decades free to the public, thanks to donations and other contributions from the city of St. Charles, First State Bank, the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary and more, according to a news release.

In the hours leading up to the big entertainment in the sky, families slowly began to fill up the park and play baseball, volleyball and bags. Two of Bill and Laura DeGraf’s four children played tennis Saturday afternoon after they ate near the top of the park’s large hill.

The DeGrafs arrived to the park at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday with Cody, their bichon poodle.

The St. Charles family has been coming to the park for its July 4 celebration for about four years and in the past have played a round at the River View Miniature Golf course at the park before the fireworks show.

“Today is perfect – it just doesn’t get any better than this,” Bill DeGraf said of the weather.

“It’s a chance to get out with the family and do something different.”

The DeGrafs planned to move off the hill and closer to the Fox River before the fireworks. St. Charles resident Greg Sengstock and his family Saturday set up their blanket and lawn chairs near the Fox River, about 30 feet south of the park’s large pavilion.

The family has come to the park for nearly a decade to watch the annual fireworks show.

“It’s St. Charles – it’s our hometown and home community,” said Greg Sengtock’s wife, Jill. “We haven’t gone anywhere else [for fireworks]. Plus it’s really pretty, right here on the river.”

Janell Walton and her family ended up in a spot on the hill above the diamond, but they didn’t plan it that way. The Waltons settled on the viewing spot because there were no other open spaces in that area of the park after they arrived at about 6 p.m. Saturday.

“All of these cars would be awesome to have,” Langley said.

He admired how well the cars were maintained.

“Even the rims of the tires look excellent,” Langley said.

“You can tell that they polish them.”

State police investigating Sunday’s N. Aurora crash

BATAVIA – The next Calvary Episcopal Church Mass on the Grass event is set for 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the church, at 222 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

The Mass will be outdoors, weather permitting.

Anyone in the Fox River Valley community is welcome to attend, parishioners and nonparishioners alike. If interested, bring a chair or blanket to sit on. There will be seating on the sidewalk for anyone who does not want to sit on the grass. After the service, those attending are welcome to stay for lunch.

Grilled food will be provided; participants may bring a side dish or dessert to share.

There will be activities as well.

There is no charge, but freewill donations will be accepted.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Illinois State Police continue to investigate a crash involving a motorcycle and a semitrailer truck that happened at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Interstate 88 and Route 31 in North Aurora.

The motorcyclist was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove by the North Aurora Fire Department. North Au-

rora Fire Captain Adam Miller said the truck driver did not require transportation to a hospital.

Miller did not know the condition of the motorcyclist.

The right and center lanes of I-88 and Route 31 had been closed immediately following the crash.

All lanes are now open on I-88 westbound at Route 31.

No one has been charged in the crash while it remains under investigation.

I’m kind of a car lover myself,” Miller said.

He had his eye on a 1957 Chevy that was on display at the show.

“That’s a beautiful car,” he said.

Lee Hoeft’s shiny red 1937 Chevy Sedan also caught people’s attention at the show.

Hoeft, of Montgomery, said it took him nine years to restore the car.

“I like the era of the hot rod,” Hoeft said.

Hoeft bemoaned that today’s cars all look the same.

“The styles were a lot better back then,” he said. “Everything looked different.”

Actually, Maddon said it makes the lineup “thicker.”

“It lengthens out the lineup,” Maddon said of Soler’s return. “Of course, you don’t have [Rizzo] in there today, but everybody’s out there now and you get all the guys cooking a little bit better. It makes a difference.”

Based on how the Cubs’ offense has been recently, they could use that difference. On Sunday, Mat Latos held the Cubs to one hit and one run.

But Chris Denorfia, who scored after his pinch-double in the eighth was the Cubs’ first hit since the first inning, said that could be a positive going forward.

“I’d look at it as more fun.

To be prepared for the postseason you’re going to need pressure games like this,” Denorfia said.

Denorfia might have something there, but the offense will need to re-emerge for October baseball to come to Wrigley.

And Maddon didn’t sound doubtful at all that things would pick up.

“It’s going to get better.

We’re going to hit. We’re definitely going to hit,” Maddon said. “We’ve got to go through these stretches. It’s always, obviously, good when you go through this stretch that you’re able to win in spite of it.”

Sale vs. Buehrle on the mound should be treat tonight For the Sun-Times

CHICAGO – Chris Sale will be named today to the American League All-Star team, his fourth consecutive honor in a season that is becoming historic for the 26-year-old lefty.

And tonight, he will try to become the first pitcher to record nine consecutive games of 10 or more strikeouts.

His mound opponent for Toronto will be a former Sox lefty who already has a treasure chest of baseball history to his name and a likely Hall of Fame plaque in his future, Mark Buehrle.

Baseball’s spotlight will relish the matchup.

“We didn’t do it for that,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said of moving back Sale’s scheduled Sunday start. “We did it more for Chris, but it ends up being a nice game that our fans should enjoy.”

Expect cheers at the start for both pitchers, who were teammates from 2010 to 2011.

“Mark should be celebrated for everything that he’s done

here,” Ventura said. “He’s meant a lot to Chris and a lot of these guys who are here in mentor fashion, the guy who can show you how to grab the ball and pitch and get it done.”

Infielder Gordon Beckham has played behind both and knows what sets them apart.

“Part of being in the big leagues is learning from guys who have been in the big leagues,” he said of their clubhouse influence. “As pitchers, they both work so fast, but they’re different. They go out and throw the ball over the plate and whatever happens, happens.”

The man who arguably has had the best perspective of both careers is Sox pitching coach Don Cooper.

“They are two different styles, but any style can be dominant if you do one thing – throw your stuff in the [strike] zone,” he said. “No matter what your stuff is – curve, slider, all of it – throw it in the zone, and Sale and Buehrle do that.”

Command of the strike zone has been Buehrle’s “greatest asset,” Cooper said.

“That transition of when he was throwing 91 and then maybe 88 [mph] was seamless because he never relied on speed, so he could still dominate games,” he said.

In that sense, Buehrle is not unlike Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, who mastered control and worked the corners of the strike zone as velocity declined.

“They had similarities to just grab it and throw it,” Ventura said. “The movement, taking a little off, just their ability to locate exactly where they want to and move it back and forth.”

Sale still has tremendous velocity in his arsenal, and a buggy-whip delivery that adds to a batter’s woes.

But he shares with Buehrle the mindset of what Cooper said is key for any pitcher.

“Work fast, throw strike one and work in the zone,” he said.

Now in his 16th season and last contract year with the Blue Jays, Buehrle boasts a World Series ring, two no-hitters – one of them a perfect game – five All-Star appearances, four Gold Gloves and a lifetime 208-156 re-

cord so far.

But Cooper counts Buehrle’s durability as equally remarkable.

“When you see a guy who pitches 200 innings [in a season] for four or five years, that’s something. But to do it for 15 years [as Buehrle has] you’re a stud, no matter what style you have. That’s a tremendous athlete. When you can pencil in a guy for six or seven innings in

a game, at the end of the year, that’s such a valuable commodity. That’s another thing about Buehrle – that he can last and be so good.’’

Cooper understandably is fond of both pitchers.

“I appreciate the hard work that no one sees,” he said. “Sale is probably the most talented guy I’ve ever had, but he still has time to go to reach where Buehrle is.”

CHICAGO – Manager Joe Maddon again stressed he believes in magic. He also stressed he believes the Cubs’ offense will come around.

For some reason, those felt related after the Cubs beat the Miami Marlins, 2-0, Sunday despite grinding out only three hits.

“We did well. I am not concerned about the offense. I know it’s going to show up,” Maddon said. “Like I said, as long as you can pull some of this stuff out, this magical stuff

out while you’re waiting for the offense to come, I’ll take it.”

Whether or not the Cubs are winning with magic is up for debate. Kyle Hendricks threw 71⁄3 scoreless innings while allowing only five hits, continuing a six-game run for Cubs starters with a 1.08 earned-run average.

They also got their second 2-0 win in a week, to go along with a 1-0 victory.

“The pitching staff, we’ve been doing our job,” Hendricks said. “We’ve been keeping the runs off the board as of late and offense has been providing enough, and the defense has

been there. Just playing good baseball.”

That’s true, but the Cubs’ offense will have to show up as Maddon promised, especially for this week’s four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Playing without the resting Anthony Rizzo, the Cubs had three hits Sunday, after Saturday’s game when they scored seven runs but none after the second inning.

So, is this how the Cubs will have to win?

“We’ll take it. That’s how this game ebbs and flows and that’s what my point is.

You’ve got to pitch,” Maddon said. “I mean, the game could have been called ‘pitching’ as opposed to baseball, I really believe that. So when you do that and you catch the ball and you do good things on the basepaths and play the entire

Dear Abby: My son had an affair that resulted in the birth of a child outside his marriage.

The baby is extremely ill. My daughter-in-law has forgiven my son for his infidelity, and along with my two grandchildren, the little family is trying to rebuild and also do right by the baby.

The baby’s mother stays in contact with us, although she is bitter and unpleasant to my son because he would not leave his family for her.

However, she does keep us abreast of the baby’s ongoing medical condition and needs. She confided to me that she got pregnant hoping that my son would finally leave his family.

My question is: How do I handle the relationship we have been forced into with the baby’s mother?

I need moral guidance, and some kind of etiquette guidance as well. – Moral
