Blaze causes $15K damage to St. Charles apartment STC police: Fire not considered to be suspicious

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An apartment kitchen fire Thursday on St. Charles’ west side was listed as accidental, but it still is under investigation, said Scott Swanson, St. Charles assistant fire chief of operations, on Friday.

“The investigation has not been completed,” said Swanson, adding that it likely would conclude sometime next week.

The fire is not considered to be suspicious, according to a news release from the St. Charles Fire Department. The blaze caused an estimated $15,000 in losses to the apartment’s contents and structure, located at 1324 Covington

Court in St. Charles.

There were no injuries, but the apartment unit is not habitable at this time, the release said. A cleaning and restoration crew were working inside the unit Friday afternoon.

St. Charles firefighters responded at 9:40 p.m.

Thursday to a reported activated fire alarm at the Ashford at St. Charles Apartment Complex, which is where the apartment unit is located.

“While [en] route, firefighters were advised that the kitchen was on fire in the 1324 unit and the alarm was upgraded,” St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet wrote in the release. “Firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:46 and found a fire in the kitchen of the 1324 apartment which is located on the first floor.”

Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, but were on the scene for more than two hours completing overhaul operations and starting the

fire investigation, according to the release.

Swanson said the apartment’s occupants declined assistance from the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army and made other living arrangements following the fire.

At the time of the fire, two of the tenants had gone outside for a short time and noticed the fire through a window, according to release.

“The fire was discovered by a female occupant of the apartment who saw it through the window after the alarm activation,” Schelstreet wrote in the release. “She called 911 and provided additional information to the dispatcher.”

The third tenant of the apartment was away visiting a family member, according to the release.

The Geneva and Batavia fire departments assisted St. Charles with the fire, with the Elburn Fire Department providing coverage, according to the release.

It may seem, at first glance, that our “Fox River Bugs” are a pretty homogenous bunch.

I mean, really, how different could they be? Head, thorax, abdomen ... two antennae, six legs, wings. ... Glanced from the windows of passing cars, or even up close and personal on a windshield or radiator grill, these often-plentiful insects all appear to share a certain sameness.

But talk to a naturalist, fisherman or anyone else passionate about streams and aquatic ecosystems, and you’ll quickly learn that the various groups of “River Bugs” are as diverse as ecological niches they occupy.

The Trichoptera, or caddisflies, are notable for their fanciful larval cases, their hairy little wings, and their tendency to form dense mating swarms that weirdly coincide with river town street festivals.

The Ephemeroptera, or mayflies, are famous for their short adult lives and, in some circles, their gorgeous colors, lacy wings and long, flowing “tails.”

And then we have the Plecoptera, or stoneflies. When outdoor enthusiasts speak of these River Bugs – and we do, a lot – the conversation takes on a completely different tone.

Voices hush, and faces take on a look of awed reverence. For stoneflies are the Holy Grail of all River Bug-dom.

Like caddis and mayflies, stonefly juveniles, or nymphs, are aquatic. But unlike their underwater neighbors, most of which are tolerant of small amounts of impurities, stoneflies are exceedingly

clusters the way various other River Bugs do, these species have developed rituals that, I dare say, are even cooler: They drum.

Now, we’re not talking Buddy Rich or John Bonham-style percussion here.

Stonefly drumming is a subtle thing; it has to be. Even giant stoneflies, the largest North American species, measure a scant 40 millimeters at maturity. If you’re not a stonefly, you’ll need special equipment to hear the sound. But it’s drumming nonetheless, a behavior that, as one scientist puts it, “improves the efficiency of mate-finding in an otherwise silent, drab, relatively sedentary insect.”

COVER STORY HONORING RED, WHITE, BLUE Residents flock to Fourth of July fireworks show in Batavia

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Kriss and Terri Knowles said they have been to the Batavia Sky Concert at least 20 times, but they stopped coming to Engstrom Park for the event when their two daughters got older.

Friday was a return to tradition for the family, as they sat on lawn chairs in the park with one of their daughters, Jacki, joining them.

“It’s more fun to be close up and see the effects along the ground, hear the booms,” Kriss Knowles said.

The Knowles family were part of the crowd that usually numbers 10,000 to 15,000 each year for the Batavia Sky Concert. The concert is in its 65th year and is known for it fireworks display synchronized to a specific song list created for each event.

The fireworks are set off on the Mooseheart property south of Batavia, so Engstrom Park on the city’s southwest side becomes the central viewing area for many residents.

“The weather’s perfect – we filled this place pretty quickly,” said Mark Davis, chairman of the 2014 Batavia ACCESS Fireworks Committee.

Davis said the concert continues to be a strong community effort with volunteers and donations collected every year. This year the committee expected to reach its $40,000 fundraising goal, thanks to numerous fundraisers, corporate sponsors and the $5 donations collected for parking on Friday in various lots on the city’s west side.

The concert, including the fireworks and its amenities, costs about $38,000 each year, Davis said.

Several residents staked out spots in Engstrom Park hours before the concert’s scheduled 9:30 p.m. start time. Jessica Wild of Batavia was driving by the park at 11 a.m. Friday and decided to lay out a blanket for a choice viewing area on the park’s east side.

“We enjoy the fireworks,” Wild said, sitting next to her husband, Jon, and son, Oliver, 8.

“They do a very good job.”

The family rode their bikes to the park partly because of the large exodus of car and foot traffic when the concert ends. Malki Duque of Elburn also rode his bike to the event, along with girlfriend Bridgette Koukos of North Aurora.

This was Duque and Koukos’ fourth year attending the concert together and their first watching the concert in a turquoise hammock.

They decided to tie it between two trees in the park to be slightly higher up, and to be comfortable.

“The atmosphere here is very relaxing,” Duque said. “It’s nice to be around people who are here to enjoy the same thing.”

Stoneflies are no less important members of Fox River watershed • OTTO Continued from page 4 Ferson Creek this year.

Stoneflies a few years back were awarded the dubious status of “highly imperiled” by aquatic entomologists R. Edward DeWalt, Colin Favret and Donald W. Webb of the Illinois Natural History Survey’s Center for Biodiversity. Decades of habitat modifications, including dams, drain tiles, stream channelization and development, have made things tough for Illinois’ plecopterans.

Interestingly, the stretch of Ferson where the nature campers found their stonefly is just downstream from a recent dam removal. Water now tumbles over boulders that had once impeded the creek’s flow, creating a rush of clear, cool, well-oxygenated water.

I remember making a similar stonefly discovery in the Fox River at Glenwood

Park Forest Preserve, shortly after the south Batavia dam had been removed.

This location, where aquatic species diversity has measurably improved, is also a favorite hangout of another species once considered imperiled – the bald eagle.

Stoneflies may not be as iconic as our nation’s symbol, but they’re no less important members of our Fox River watershed.

With continued attention to habitat improvement, including dam modifications and stream re-meandering, there could come a day when stoneflies lose their Holy Grail status.

Wouldn’t it be great if they were just another River Bug?

OBITUARIES KAREN A. CASTLE Died: June 24, 2014 Karen A. Castle died Tuesday, June 24, 2014, after courageously and gracefully battling Alzheimer’s and cancer for more than 10 years. Karen’s beautiful spirit and joy of living were inspirational to all who knew her. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and grandmother, as well as a superb athlete, child advocate and community leader.

Karen Ann was born in Greeley, Colorado, to Max and Ruth Oesterle. She has two brothers, Dallas of Canoga Park, California, and Max of Ft. Collins, Colorado. As a young girl, Karen was extremely shy and quiet. But when she entered high school, she blossomed into a beautiful, popular teen who was voted Miss Greeley High as a senior. Her winning smile and genuine kindness opened doors for her as she went on to attend the University of Northern Colorado, where she earned her BA and MA in elementary education. Karen was a very proud member of Alpha Phi Sorority, as well as numerous women’s honorary groups.

On Aug. 23, 1964, Karen married the love of her life, Jim Castle, and together they received their Master’s degrees in 1967. Born to work with children, Karen taught first and second grade in Littleton, Colorado, for five years. Karen and Jim were blessed with two daughters, Kelli and Nicole, and for the next 20 years, Karen devoted herself to providing every opportunity for her girls. No mother has ever been more proud to celebrate

successes or more capable of soothing difficult losses. Karen taught her daughters what motherhood truly means. During her marriage to Jim, Karen relocated their family 10 times.

The former small town girl addressed each challenging new community with class and excitement. She always maintained her connections with dear friends, even from oceans away. Karen joined Bible studies, headed PTAs and PEO, volunteered for children’s service organizations and even learned new languages. The saying “Behind every successful man is a strong woman” must have been written about Karen.

Karen’s devotion to her family was strengthened by her Christian faith. She found her passion traveling with her family around the world, learning about different cultures, as well as different cuisines. Always an athlete, Karen challenged herself to become a terrific runner, golfer, skier, tennis pro and Jim’s best dancing partner.

She taught her family how to love and forgive; how to laugh and be a champion; how to work hard and play harder; and most importantly, how to be a strong mother, grandmother and wife. She was a compassionate listener and a fiercely loyal friend. Even as she battled to maintain her memory and her dignity, Karen continued to make friends, care for others, bring those around her joy and through it all ... share her beautiful smile.

The family wishes to thank the Silverado Alzheimer’s Community in Encinitas which was Karen’s last home. The care, love and respect the nurses, caregivers, residents and their families showed for Karen during the end of her journey was

Noting that 2010 data shows Geneva is about 90 percent locally funded, McConnaughay said the consequences of Senate Bill 16 would result in a nearly 100 percent local funding burden.

Continuing to cut dollars from school districts is making it harder for senior citizens and young families to live in these communi-

ties and makes Illinois unattractive to businesses, McConnaughay said.

If local resources are expected to fully fund schools, McConnaughay said, “then remove the mandates off of us.”

McConnaughay said the bill in its current form might not go anywhere, but the approach it uses likely will be more long-lasting.

ST. CHARLES – The Tookula Student Choir of Minden, Germany, will visit St. Charles from Monday to Thursday as part of the Blue Lake International Exchange Program.

While in St. Charles, Tookula will perform two concerts.

Tookula’s first concert will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., in downtown St. Charles.

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay is concerned that a senate bill designed to overhaul education funding would result in placing more of a burden on taxpayers.

Senate Bill 16 – also known as the School Funding Reform Act of 2014 – stemmed from the findings of the Education Funding Advisory Committee, which was tasked with proposing a funding system providing adequate, equitable, transparent Karen McCo- and accountable distribunnaughay tion of funds to school districts, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

Although the committee is bipartisan, McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, said the bill was drafted without any input from Republicans.

In a meeting this week with the Kane County Chronicle, McConnaughay outlined the financial ramifications the bill would have on suburban school districts.

The collar counties – which received nearly $969 million in state distributions for fiscal 2013 – would get about $886,416,503 under Senate Bill 16, a loss of about $82.5 million.

Of the 143 districts in the collar counties, 21 would gain distributions, and 122 would not.

Locally, Geneva School District 304 would lose about $3.9 million compared to 2013, bringing its total state funding to $989,740, and St. Charles School District 303 would take a nearly $8 million hit, bringing its total to about $2.2 million, according to information McConnaughay provided.

DeKALB – Every spring, Sue Olsen travels across DeKalb County to refresh signs and billboards about her son Bradley, who was last seen in 2007 in DeKalb trying to find a ride home to Maple Park.

She communicates on the Internet daily with other mothers of missing children.

She also visits three benches, one of them dedicated to Bradley, at Memorial Park in the Heritage Hills subdivision in Maple Park. The park was aptly named three months ago.

“It’s incredible how many people contact me from time to time, or friends of Brad’s that hear something,” Sue Olsen said. “I refer them to the police. Talk is golden.”

Bradley Olsen, then 26, was last seen the night of Jan. 19, 2007, at Bar One, which is now Molly’s, 1000 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb. At the time, he was working for the family construction business, William Olsen and Sons, and had five unrelated criminal charges pending against him, including allegations of violating an order of protection, battery and reckless driving.

His parents were on vacation the night he was last seen.

They returned Jan. 24, 2007, and reported him missing a week later. Before long, massive searches were organized: On Feb. 24, 2007, about 140

The park in the Heritage Hills subdivision was named Memorial Park three months ago. people helped search DeKalb and parts of central DeKalb County for clues. A few weeks later, Naperville police divers searched the pond at the South Annie Glidden Road entrance of The Knolls subdivision, which is about three-quarters

of a mile from the bar.

A judge directed Coroner Dennis Miller to issue a presumptive death certificate for him in March 2010.

Olsen was a white man with blue eyes and brown hair. He was 5-foot-8, weighed

175 pounds and had tattoos of a palm tree on his left ankle and a sun on his back. Those who last saw him said he was wearing a black, short-sleeved collarless shirt with blue jeans, a brown leather coat and black lace-up boots.

In more recent years, police have not found evidence when dogs have searched different areas in the county.

Sometimes a dog alerts police to something that may be a clue, but it turns out to be nothing.

“Dogs aren’t perfect,” Redel said.

As times goes on, the investigation gets tougher since memories aren’t as sharp and relationships change, Redel said. The only key witnesses in the case are the group of about 15 to 20 people who last saw Olsen at Bar One. “Progress is not where we want it to be, but we’re optimistic,” he said. “His name’s being talked about. His mom is putting posters up. People are still calling.”

To give families of other missing people support, Sue

Olsen helps search for many missing people who live within a 30-mile radius of her Maple Park home.

She recently went to Chicago to search for a missing person and has also been involved with searches in the high-profile cases of Stacy Peterson and Lisa Stebic.

“Everybody needs support,” Olsen said. “Unfortunately, not everyone that has gone missing has gotten the same treatment. Some people have gotten little help. It’s a sad, sad thing.”

Still, Sue Olsen has faith that police detectives will be able to solve the mystery of what happened to her son.

The $50,000 reward family and private donors gathered years ago is waiting for the person who provides information leading to her son’s remains; she’d like to give him a proper burial.

“Someday we’re going to be on the news when we find Brad,” she said.

St. Charles becomes a StormReady community

As the emergency preparedness coordinator for St. Charles, it’s part of his duty to be ready to respond in such a situation.

Last month, the city accomplished a National Weather Service designation acknowledging its emergency preparedness.

St. Charles became a StormReady Community, joining dozens of other communities in the state and more than 2,000 in the nation.

“Not every community gets it,” Bumba said. “Not every community tries for it. … It does require work, and it does require having procedures and policies.”

According to the weather service, 64 Illinois communities have achieved the designation, including St. Charles and Batavia. Kane County is one of 23 counties

in the state to receive the designation. And nationwide, the service listed 2,218 communities with the designation as of Thursday.

According to the weather service, the program “encourages communities to take a proactive approach to improving local weather operations.”

It “provides emergency managers with clearcut guidelines on how to improve their hazardous weather operations.”

According to the weather service, communities must: • Establish an emergency operations center • Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public • Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally • Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars • Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises

Take steps to encourage more voting Voting is the most basic principle of democracy.

Yet, very few people exercise their right to vote. A lot of it is indifference, but some of it is the obstacles we place in front of people to be able to vote.

So, we were pleased to see both chambers of the Illinois Legislature pass a bill before the recent session ended that would offer fewer restrictions for casting a ballot this November.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed HB105 into law Tuesday.

A cynic would suggest these reforms are nothing more than an attempt by Democrats to bring people more likely to vote Democratic to the polls. There probably is some truth to that, but what’s wrong with getting more people involved in the process? And what’s stopping them from voting Republican?

This law would allow Election Day registration and would extend the early voting period by a day, to the Sunday before the election. It also would let Illinois’ public universities set up a campus location for in-person absentee voting on Election Day. We support all of these actions.

We’re wary of another provision that removes the photo identification requirement for in-person early voting, but are open to testing it as long as officials watch out for potential voter fraud and an evaluation is done after the November election.

Ten states and Washington, D.C., already allow same-day voter registration, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Sponsors of Illinois’ bill said they’d seek to expand the law beyond November, if the process moves smoothly.

This legislation follows allowing 17-year-olds to vote in March’s primary, if they were going to turn 18 before the November general election.

We have an open mind when it comes to removing obstacles from allowing people to vote.

We favor these changes for November’s election. If all goes well, we hope Illinois lawmakers consider making these changes permanent.

It would be nice if our elected officials spent less time making everything a partisan issue and more time doing what’s right for Illinois residents and democracy. This arguing over rules allowed to help more people vote is just the latest example.

Runaway dog On Friday, June 13, at 1300 hours, our dog took off running, and I tried to catch him.

Five different people in cars tried to help me by blocking him from the busy roads.

One woman gave me a leash, and another woman gave me a ride to catch up with him. Finally, I caught Benji, dog, and the woman drove me and him home. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to you wonderful people.

We are taxed out of our homes Yes, this is about the football field. Batavia residents know that the school board gets what they want, for their teachers, for their pensions, for anything the school needs. Because all they have to do, the school board approves it, and then guess what happens?

I think more people should feel like that, and I have something to add to that. When they come here, they should learn English. And if they want to speak it in the home, that’s fine ... .

But they should speak English outside the home, when they are at the store, wherever.

My grandparents came from Italy; they had to learn English and speak English outside the home. What is the difference between these people and all the other foreigners?

Germans? Hollands? Everywhere? When you call up some place and they say English 1 and Spanish 2, where is the German, where is the Irish, where is the Italian for that? I don’t know what pull they have other than President Obama, because [of] their vote.

Stop speaking non-English in the home It is not the teacher’s job to teach English to students. Non-English speaking people need to form groups and meet at each other’s homes and hire an interpreter to teach them English. In turn, they can teach the preschool children. Stop speaking non-English in the home until everyone in the home can speak clear, understandable English. Dig into your pockets and pay the interpreter, and stop expecting taxpayers to pay for everything. Older immigrants coming here from other countries fended for themselves and asked for nothing from anyone. That’s the difference.

Geneva preschool assessement Aug. 29 GENEVA – The Geneva School District’s preschool assessment screening is set for Aug. 29 at Friendship Station, 1415 Viking Drive, Geneva.

State law indicates that all children with qualifying disabilities between the ages of 3 and 5 must be provided with programs appropriate to their needs. The school district must offer an annual screening of these children to determine need and eligibility for services.

Eligible children must be preschool age and reside within the district. School District 304 is providing a free screening to assess development in the following areas: vision and hearing, speech and language, cognitive and motor, and social and emotional. This screening is optional.

It is not a requirement for enrolling in preschool and is not designed to determine kindergarten readiness.

Coach’s faith-based film in early stages

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Don Beebe loves a good challenge, and his budding movie project certainly is providing one.

Between refining the movie’s script, pursuing funding and crucial decisions to be made on filming location and casting, the Kaneland graduate and former NFL receiver is putting his multi-tasking skills to the test, especially considering his ongoing ties to Aurora Christian’s football program.

To this point, dealing with the script has been on Beebe’s front-burner.

“It typically takes 10 to 15 times to go throughout the whole thing, and so we’re in the fourth edition now,” Beebe said. “The story’s coming to fruition.

It’s been great, and I’ve learned a lot about how to make a movie go.”

Beebe stepped down as Aurora Christian football’s head coach in December – in part to free up additional time for the biographical movie – but remains on as the Eagles’ staff as offensive coordinator in support of his brother, Dave, the team’s new head coach and longtime former defensive coordinator.

Beebe is hopeful filming can begin this fall, with an eye toward a potential release date in 2015 or 2016. His role with Aurora Christian football is only

“This is where I’m from,” Beebe said. “I was born in Aurora, and I want it shot in Aurora just from a logistical

thing, too, me being able to be around a little bit more because Georgia, I’ll be gone for a while because I’m going to be on set every day. I’m going to be heavily involved in the making of this movie, and that’s what I wanted.

“I want the truth, the real story of what God did for me, and not for it to be something that’s not real.”

The faith-based film does not yet have an official title but will be thematically similar to a 2012 book on Beebe’s life entitled “Six Rings from Nowhere,” charting Beebe’s ascent to the NFL despite being undersized and playing college football at little-known Chadron State. Desert Wind Faith Films is handling the movie’s production.

Beebe’s long-term vision is to become a faith-based, global speaker, and he thinks the movie will help him on that path.

“It’s always been a passion of mine,” Beebe said. “I love doing it, and if this thing does go through, it’s going to give me a great platform to be able to travel the world and speak.”

Beebe said he’ll travel to New York in the coming weeks to continue working on the project’s funding. The level of funding secured would give Desert Wind more options when it comes to casting and production.

Ever the optimist, Beebe is upbeat about gaining the necessary financial backing.

“If God wants it to happen, it’s going to happen,” Beebe said. “There are no barriers and no obstacles that can’t be climbed. I’m a living example of that.”

As for his new role as an assistant coach for Aurora Christian, Beebe said it does not feel like a major change considering both he and Dave Beebe heavily were involved in the past and will remain so.

“We still look at our roles as two brothers just coaching football and having fun doing it, and that’s it,” Beebe said.

Batavia senior offensive lineman Jack Breshears so far has visited seven schools where he is looking to continue his football career in 2015. He has scholarship offers from Central Michigan and Florida Atlantic, but has more visits planned.

“I remember my freshman year, I was looking up at the guy,” Breshears said of Gardner. “I was 6-(foot)-3, I wasn’t a small kid freshman year, but I just remember Cole was probably 6-6, 250, 255 (pounds), just a giant. I looked up to him. He was huge, one of my idols, someone I wanted to be like when I was older.”

Breshears isn’t looking up to many high schoolers these days.

A starting offensive tackle on last year’s IHSA Class 6A state champion Bulldogs, Breshears played at 6-3, 250 as a junior and said he’s up to 6-4, 285 now as he nears his senior season.

As well as he played last year, Breshears thinks his weight room strides and maturation will be evident once the 2014 season begins.

“This year, I know a lot more,” Breshears said. “I’m bigger, stronger no one can get around me. I pound kids.

It’s a lot easier, and I’m a lot more fluid than last year.”

Breshears said he projects as an offensive tackle if he ends up in the MAC, but is more likely to play at guard if he lands in a higher-profile conference. For now, his focus is helping the Bulldogs give last year’s historic season a suitable encore.

Breshears is one of four returning offensive linemen starters for a unit that figures to be the greatest strongsuit for Batavia’s offense, which graduated most of its elite performers at the skill positions. Returning center Patrick Gamble and guards Mitch Krusz and Zach Tate also played large roles for the Bulldogs last year.

Batavia traditionally is balanced between the pass and run offensively, but this year’s team – at least early on – could tilt more heavily toward pounding the ball on the ground.

Breshears said an offensive line with “a lot more chemistry” will be eager to provide leadership until some of Batavia’s new starters gain experience.

“We know each other very well,” Breshears said of the Bulldogs’ O-line. “We’re all very big and powerful. …

We can handle our own. It’s going to be very good this year.”

The senior visited Eastern Michigan last week, the seventh school he’s checked out so far. He’s willing to see that list climb well into double digits.

“Seven’s great so far, but I’m planning to visit a lot more because I have a lot more interest (from other schools),” Breshears said. “I want to see the schools I’m considering, but it’s great so far.”

Five of the seven schools Breshears has visited are Mid-American Conference programs; Northern Illinois, Ball State, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan. He also has visited Michigan State and Wisconsin. Central Michigan and Florida Atlantic are the two programs that have offered Breshears scholarships.

Breshears said if he ends up going the MAC route, Eastern Michigan will receive strong consideration.

“It was great,” Breshears said. “It’s a program that has to build a little bit. It’s kind of down, and 15, 20 minutes from Ann Arbor, so they don’t get much fan support, but the head coach there (Chris Creighton) is unreal. I talked to him for about an hour. He was probably one of the best head coaches I’ve talked to so far.”

The visit to Ypsilanti also was bolstered by the presence of class of 2012 Batavia graduate Cole Gardner, a tight end for the Eagles.

In the Mullin’s book ‘critical’ as Cougars’ well as ‘complimentary’ Den Author gives fans a useful guide to Midwest ballparks GENEVA – Author Tim Mullin of Chicago glances at the jacket of his first published book with equal parts pride and self-deprecation.

Naturally, “Baseball Road Trips: The Midwest and Great Lakes” represents the fruits of considerable labor and research. It also features the 46-year-old’s name about as properly as you can use it – Timothy M. Mullin.

“My publisher thought my mother was in the room,” Mullin grinned.

Just more than three months after the book’s release, Mullin finds a handful of professional and independent league clubs wouldn’t mind calling him by his full name for a little chat in private. Although he doesn’t lambaste many ballpark cultures, Mullin still notes his work is “not exactly a chamber of commerce” in every case.

“The book’s critical as well as it is complimentary,” Mullin said.

“Because we’re going to tell people, ‘Hey, if they don’t do a hot dog right, then frankly, it doesn’t deserve your money.’ Or entertainment-wise, or whatever.”

Before you start to ask just what gives Mullin the nerve, at least consider his favorable review of the Cougars and Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Mullin signed copies of his book before Wednesday’s game under neutral conditions. He lauded the Cougars’ cooperation when he researched the park in April 2013 and cited only one moment of averted hostility this week.

He walked into the ballpark wearing a cap of the Madison (Wisconsin) Mallards of the collegiate summer Northwoods League. Cougars general manager Curtis Haug promptly found Mullin a green Cougars cap.

The player development contract between the Cougars and Cubs looms large in his write-up of the Cougars and Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

“Sell your community with your ballpark,” Mullin said. “A lot of them just aren’t catching on to that, but others are just embracing it.

This place embraces it. They went to the Cubs and the Cubs came to them.

It was like, ‘Great,’ you know. One and one equals two.”

In traveling with friends and his baseball-loving wife, Mia Jaganti, on various trips through the years, Mullin discovered many fans in major league cities happily settled into a comfort zone without giving other smaller locales a chance.

In this edition – he has several other regional books and separate spring training projects for Florida and Arizona stadiums ready for publication – Mullin explores

parks in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. At the core is the idea of “Explorus Maximus.”

Mullin offers non-baseball side trips in many major league entries, as well as notable places to enjoy food and drink and how to accentuate the gameday experience. Although his focus remains “south of the major leagues” – that’s organizationally, not geographically – Mullin clearly wasn’t simply happy to be there when he visited the bigs.

Mullin, for one, felt Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium should have accentuated the town’s famed barbecue better. As it was, he left disappointed in one signature concession item.

“You’re in the middle of some of the best pigs and best cows in the country, and you’re going to give me this hot dog?” Mullin said.

After working in finance for 15 years and in public service for five more, Mullin had built the resources to open his own company, Park Walk Productions. That paved the way to a book series he hopes will sprout after a look at America’s heartland.

“They say, ‘Write what you know,’ and I’ve been to so many ballparks and it’s real fun for me. I see people doing the same thing I’m doing, and I go, ‘I can’t be alone,’ you know,” Mullin said. “There’s other people that need to know about this stuff. They need to know a concise, compact, ‘Hey, I’m in Iowa; what should I do here?’ It’s been just a great road, at this point.”

A closer look at the Cougars By the Beyers Hitting coach Tom Beyers receives semi-regular updates on the Cougars’ top run producers from last season, namely the ones who have been or will be immortalized by bobblehead – Dan Vogelbach and Albert Almora.

Beyers experienced highs and lows with both players last season, but is adamant that if they can navigate Advanced-A Daytona after spending most of 2013 in Kane County, they will have cleared a sizable hurdle.

“That’s two pretty challenging levels. Playing here and Daytona, these are our two pitching-oriented leagues.

So you get challenged offensively in these two leagues,” Beyers said.

“Florida State League’s a grind. Big, spring training parks. So numbers, you earn. At this ballpark, you earn it.”

Noteworthy This season marked the first time the Cougars did not play at home on Independence Day since 2009. …

Since the start of the 2002 season, the Cougars and Chiefs have played 22 extra-inning games, including 13 in Peoria. The Cougars are 12-10. …

Wednesday’s 7-5 victory marked Peoria’s first win at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark this season. … The parent Los Angeles Angels promoted outfielder Trevor Gretzky, a Cougar for parts of 2013, to Class A Burlington on Thursday. The Bees visit the Cougars from Aug. 18 to 20.

I’m currently playing in a tournament for my travel softball team, the Kane County XPlosion. There’s about 150 teams per level. So far, we’re doing really well. We are 4-0, and [Friday] we finish our bracket play.

CLINTON, Iowa – In honor of Independence Day, the Cougars and LumberKings put on a dazzling display of pitching, as the score was separated by one run for nearly the entire game.

The Cougars (11-3 second half, 56-28 overall) held on for a 2-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings (5-9, 35-48) on Friday at Ashford University Field.

Cael Brockmeyer put the first run on the board with an RBI triple in the second inning, and then pitching took over for both sides. Juan Paniagua (5-3) cruised through five innings without allowing a run and allowing only two hits, both to Chantz Mack.

Blake Holovach (4-2) matched Paniagua with seven strong innings but allowed another run in the sixth.

Shawon Dunston Jr. drew the first walk of the game and the Cougars took advantage of the free pass. Some small ball moved Dunston to third before Kyle Schwarber drove an RBI double for a 2-0 lead.

Kuefler, who is competing with her travel softball program, the Kane County XPlosion, in a tournament in Colorado this week, batted .435 with 11 doubles and 19 RBIs for the Knights as a junior. Plan B might be put into action played Mirotic’s arrival earlier in the week – most likely because of the Anthony buzz – another source said Friday that the team now feels confident that something is close to getting done with the 23-year-old Mirotic, especially after the 6-foot-10 forward had a $3 million buyout with Real Madrid paid.

As for getting free agent Carmelo Anthony in a Bulls uniform, the team might not get any closer than the image it put up outside the United Center during Anthony’s visit Tuesday.

While the Bulls feel confident that they still are in the running, there is a feeling that they’ve lost momentum, especially with the Knicks now willing to offer a max contract for his return, as well as the promise of more things to come in 2015, when they can free up even more salary-cap space.

Maybe the Mirotic talks are a prelude to Plan B already being under way.

the Bulls still believe they will be well positioned in the Eastern Conference with the additions of Gasol, Mirotic and first-round draft pick Doug McDermott.

According to a source, Gasol was told during his meeting with the Bulls that there would be a starting job for him. That would mean that Taj Gibson could remain a Sixth Man of the Year candidate for another season.

It also would allow the Bulls to keep Mike Dunleavy and Jimmy Butler. At least one of them – maybe both – would have to go to sign Anthony as a free agent.

Then there’s Boozer. Actually, there’s no longer Boozer.

The Sun-Times reported the Boozer camp wanted an answer on his future earlier this week and was told that the team would invoke the amnesty provision. With the Knicks still unwilling to do a sign-and-trade for Boozer and no interest from other teams for his expiring $16.8 million contract, it was the only route for the Bulls to take.

WASHINGTON – The guy who could be the first to go in the Cubs’ annual summer sell-off sounded like he might not mind speeding up the process.

Pulled from the Cubs’ 7-2 victory over the Nationals on Friday after giving up a leadoff double in the seventh inning, All-Star candidate Jason Hammel fumed about a pitch-count issue raised two months ago by ace Jeff Samardzija and discussed privately by Cubs pitchers since.

“I have no idea why I came out of the game [at the 92-pitch mark],” Hammel, who was working with a 4-1 lead at the time, said unsolicited. “I honestly believe you learn how to pitch when you get to 100 pitches. If you’re not allowed to reach that, I think that’s hurting you more than helping you. I guess it is what it is right now.”

This probably won’t concern Hammel much longer.

At least a half-dozen teams targeting starting pitching had scouts on hand Friday as Hammel improved to 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA.

WEEKEND LIFE Welcoming World Cup soccer into living room, life Soccer, the viewing and playing of which is enjoyed by millions, seems to quite stealthily have invaded my life – and not just my checkbook at registration time. For instance, take the men’s World Cup. In my house, it’s inspired the expression of some pretty amazing sounds, some of which I’ve never before heard uttered by my firstborn.

I’ll be doing dishes in the kitchen, or otherwise occupied in some other area of my little house – or puttering outside, for that matter – and suddenly be startled by a primal utterance the likes of which I’m hard-pressed to put into words.

Most amusing, when I’m not holding heavy, soapy things.

If I’m honest, though, a few of those sounds have come out of my own mouth, too. I mean, did you see that last U.S. game, Tuesday afternoon?

It was kind of a sleeper there, for a while (I even ran out to pick up dinner, at one point), but when a 0-0 tie forced the game into extra time and points finally were scored, yup, I was shrieking and gasping right along

That American goalie, Tim Howard, what a beast! If you follow soccer at all you know that while the Americans are a terrific team, in this game he pretty much single-handedly (or double, as it were) prevented a total massacre at the hands of the Belgians with his crazy-capable goal-tending.

Though the Americans finally lost the match, 2-1, Noah tells me that in this game, Howard made the most saves in a single match in recorded World Cup history. What. A. Beast!

Needless to say, noisy or not, in my house, it’s generally understood that any “regular programming” has taken a backseat to the World Cup. But it’s not just the noise. No, soccer has invaded my life in other ways, too, and I’m not just talking about the

broken windows from my kids’ errant balls. I’ve actually gotten a taste of what it means to be on the receiving end of a good offense, myself. (This no longer refers to playing soccer with my kids in the backyard, because, these days, bad things happen when I run – and besides, it’s no fun for me anymore, since they’ve both grown so shockingly tall that I can no longer pick them up to swing them away from the ball.)

I’m referring, instead, to what happened this “season,” after my daughter lobbied for a new bathing suit and the trek from store to store commenced.

It finally dawned on me, a few days in, that she’d developed a fairly effective technique for shuffling me out of one store – when she was ready to continue her quest but I’d paused to linger over something that’d caught my eye – and into another.

She’d ever-so-subtly begun doing this “bodying” thing, where one soccer player kinda leans into another to sort of shuffle her out of the way so she can get to the ball first. I laughed

out loud when it happened again at Old Navy a few weeks ago.

Seems my sweet, and some would say shy, girl, Holly, can really hold her own – on the field and off, and with her old Mom in a clothing store.

I recall how awkward it felt for her and her teammates, just a short few years ago, when they were first encouraged to try this on the soccer field.

But note to Coach Alex, I’m thinking she’s got it down! She bodies-up to me and herds me out the door, and before I even know what’s happening, my key is in the ignition. Ha! Seems soccer’s here to stay, in one way or another.

As for the noise, our pets, quite preferring a more serene existence, eagerly await the end of this World Cup. But the women play theirs, next year. Bring it on! Best get the poor dears some earplugs.

Hybrid, cross-bred hydrangeas maintenance-free specimens Hydrangeas have come a long way in a very short time.

The Nikko blue and orb varieties that were such a challenge to grow have given way to newer varieties and easier options. It seemed like you could never do right by your hydrangea – coddling and coaxing it just to get a few measly flowers.

But with hybrids and cross-breeding, they’ve developed some truly maintenance-free specimens that even the novice gardener can enjoy.

Macrophylla hydrangeas include the mophead and lacecap varieties and refer to the round, ball-like shape of the blooms or staggered blooming of the flower heads.

Often called “bigleaf” varieties, these are the hydrangeas that typically come to mind when you think of a hydrangea and can change color according to the acidity of the soil. But bear in mind

New varieties of these include Endless Summer, Twist and Shout, and Abracadabra, which show more promise if given plenty of water and maintained in a protected area where the “old wood” might not freeze during our harsh winters.

Blushing Bride is an appealing alternative that tolerates our cold winters, and Bloomstruck is more heat tolerant for sunnier yards.

Although it’s not a macrophylla, many landscapers and homeowners have had success with Annabelle hydrangeas, which still have the big mophead-like blooms, big leaves and are cold tolerant to zone 4.

THEORY Jamie Palmer would remain the same person, with the same values, beliefs and qualities. Your fishing spear could break and the coconuts might not be ripening quickly enough, but you would still feel good about who you were, just not about that particular day.

Our feelings about ourselves become influenced when humans come into our lives. Our earliest interactions with our parents or guardians through their words or actions often teach us incorrectly that the feelings we have for ourselves should be linked with our behaviors or other’s opinions of us, i.e.: “you’re being bad,” “you disappoint me” or “I don’t like you right now.”

If physical discipline is used, it can further cement our

perception that we are bad, not just our behaviors. This influence from our elders becomes a form of control over us.

Our self-esteem becomes subject to their opinions at any given time. As we get older, we inadvertently add more people to the list of those who control our self-image. Friends, love interests and the media have an effect on how we perceive ourselves. This destructive thinking can ultimately lead to poor decision-making and a lifetime of regrets and selfdoubt.

When you don’t know who you are, can you really like yourself, stand up for yourself or make good decisions?

Sadly too many parents think that they have the power to shape their offspring into the beings that they desire them to be. In doing so, they create a child who becomes dependent on what others think of them.

Hopefully many of us experienced the guidance to learn who we were at an early age,

and the encouragement and support to develop our individual uniqueness, so that we came through our early years unscathed and with a healthy self-regard.

However, if the messages we received in our youth were lacking the necessary nurturing and support that children need, we will carry with us a misperception of our true selves far into our adult lives.

At some point, we have to take back the control and allow ourselves to influence our own feelings. In doing so, we can see ourselves as we truly are – wonderful.

If you take the time to get to know yourself, understand what makes you unique, what inherent traits and talents you possess, you will see that those qualities have always been there.

They can’t be controlled or altered by anyone but you.

Your uniqueness is what makes you wonderful, and if you believe that, you will have

good self-esteem.

Don’t mistake life’s ups and downs with how you feel about yourself. Self-esteem cannot be diminished. You can have a bad day, feel sad or depressed, but your talents, traits, values and beliefs have not changed just because your mood has.

Your innate goodness is as intact as it was the day you were born.

Too often we walk through this life holding on to the gift that we are but never allowing our self to unwrap it and look inside.

Take some time to discover your gifts – your uniqueness.

You will find that you are, and always have been, wonderful.

With so many options, Hydrangeas have made a comeback in the garden • HYDRANGEAS Continued from page 28 Paniculata-type hydrangeas aren’t new but have recently experienced an explosion in the market with the development of Pinky-Winky, Vanilla Strawberry and Quick Fire, all patented varieties with unique color-changing blooms that capture your attention for months. Paniculata refers to the conical shape of the flowers and, although the foliage is less dense than that of the

macrophylla, features a striking contrast from stem to leaf.

These varieties usually bloom one color and change as the weather cools, sometimes with the staggered blooming of a lacecap.

This type actually dates back to the 1800s with the variety Pee-Gee, which is also available in a tree form.

Its hardy nature and low maintenance requirements make it easy for anyone to grow. I’d even call it contagious, since after my first summer with my Vanilla Strawberry I went out and bought three

more! An added bonus: Many of these varieties only require part sun exposure as opposed to macrophylla, which prefer gratuitous amounts of morning sun.

Two less common, although equally dramatic types of hydrangeas are the oakleaf and climbing hydrangea.

Oakleaf refers to the very obvious oaklike qualities of the leaves, but they also have striking conical flowers.

Oakleaf hydrangeas are actually native to the United States and are unique because of their beautiful fall foliage.

Where do our feelings about ourselves come from?

We first become aware of our self-esteem in childhood.

Before we reach the age of reasoning, when we are still quite young, our self-image is easily influenced.

If at that point, let’s say age 5, we could have been shipped off to a deserted island, away from human influences, and we would have grown up with a healthy self esteem free of self-doubt and disdain.

Picture yourself on that island. If that world was all you’d ever known, what would make you happy? Finding food, shelter, the beauty of a sunset, your oneness with nature?

When would you feel unhappy? If you became injured, experienced bad weather, or didn’t find food, perhaps?

Now think, would that sort of happiness or unhappiness impact your feelings about yourself?

Those might be the most important words in “Life Itself,” Steve James’ nice – but not TOO nice – film about the late Roger Ebert.

It would have been easy, and in James’ case, tempting, to make Ebert into a saint in this documentary, much of which was filmed during the last months of the film critic’s life. There was so much to celebrate: the early, “unspeakably romantic” years working as a cub reporter for his university newspaper; the hard-drinking, self-mythologizing era while writing for the Chicago Sun-Times; the culture-changing television show “At the Movies,” which Ebert hosted with “professional enemy” Gene Siskel; the late-in-life embrace of social media, during which he lost his physical voice but gained a new one uniquely suited to his passionate, promiscuous love of movies and art and politics and, well, life itself.

But as this absorbing, delightfully entertaining portrait demonstrates, Ebert wasn’t always an angel. He could be cruel and arrogant and, especially in his rivalry with Siskel, shockingly petty and bull-headed. (This reviewer’s sole encounter with him – when we were the only two people in a hotel room waiting to interview Martin Scorsese – was brief, monosyllabic and curt.)

That “not that nice” quote comes from one of many friends Ebert hung out with at O’Rourkes, the Chicago pub where he almost drank himself to death before getting sober in the late 1970s.

Like Pauline Kael, the only other American film critic who approached Ebert’s reach and influence, he perceived cinematic taste less as a matter of subjective taste than of morals and character: If you weren’t with him, you not only needed to have your

That headstrong commitment and ringingly persuasive voice course through “Life Itself,” which not only pays homage to Ebert as a champion of emerging filmmakers from Scorsese and Errol Morris to James himself, but as a fighter to the end. In what viewers may deem excessively intimate scenes of Ebert being treated for the thyroid and salivary gland cancer that would eventually take his life in April 2013, “Life Itself” presents a painfully candid depiction of suffering but also endurance and brio. No matter how bad it gets, Ebert’s eyes twinkle mischievously above the sagging, empty jawline that in recent years gave him an expression of perpetual, maybe even amused, astonishment.

(The man who helped make “two thumbs up” a household phrase would ultimately rely on that very gesture to express his own optimistic spirit after losing the ability

to speak in 2006.)

Thankfully, Ebert actually narrates parts of “Life Itself,” the title of which is taken from his memoir, the bookon-tape version of which we hear on screen. He was a brilliant, unselfconscious, enviably quick writer who could deliver a piece of lambent critical prose in 30 minutes, and that facility and sheer joy of expression propels what might have been an extended eulogy into a soaring testament to the power and poetry of words. And cinema.

And love, which Ebert found with his wife, Chaz, a figure of astonishing strength and generosity who reportedly turned a lifelong curmudgeon into the gentle-natured softie many of his readers always assumed he was.

Working with Ebert’s own voiceover as well as the reminiscences of friends and family (including Siskel’s widow, whose candid observations of Gene and Roger’s eventual friendship account for some of the film’s most moving

moments), James gives Ebert his due, not only as the first movie reviewer to win the Pulitzer Prize, but as a towering cultural figure and, finally, an un-pretentious, ink-stained philosopher. As Ebert says, reading from his book, he saw cinema as a “machine that generates empathy,” a means of opening worlds and connecting with all those other Others.

“Life Itself” is a tribute to those ever-opening worlds, and opens up a world itself – the mind of a daily journalist who was arguably the late 20th century’s most influential humanist. You may not have agreed with Ebert’s reviews – you may not have thought he was such a nice guy. But if you aren’t moved by “Life Itself,” you ought to have your heart examined.

• “Life Itself” received three stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains brief sexual images, nudity and profanity. It runs 115 minutes.

Dear Abby: My friend’s husband has been writing a novel for several years. He just self-published it, and it’s available on Amazon.

He gave me a copy, asked me to read it and enter a great review on the Amazon page. The problem is the book is filled with misused and misspelled words, and there is missing punctuation. He even switched the names of two characters. (His wife, who is a “perfectionist,” was his editor.)

Aside from the fact that I don’t want to finish the book, I know he or my friend will ask me how I liked it. I don’t want to lie because I’m afraid if someone else brings these things to their attention, they’ll know I didn’t read it or think I should have told them. I know they will be embarrassed if I bring it to their attention.

Frankly, I think it’s too late to say anything negative because the book has already been printed. I also don’t want to cause hurt

– Reader In The Southwest Dear Reader: He’s a friend, right? And you’re only a reader, not a literary critic whose credibility will suffer if you don’t point out every flaw. Find SOMETHING you liked about the book and mention that on the Amazon page. You could call it a “page turner” because you had to turn from Page 1 to Page 2, didn’t you?

In a case like this, less is more.

And remember, you’re doing this in the capacity of being a friend, not an English teacher.

Then bring it to her, and be ready to listen if she wants to talk. Your presence and your caring will be meaningful, because when a tragedy like this happens, people don’t know what to say, which isolates the person who is grieving.

Geriatrician can help older adults weigh treatment options Dear Doctor K: My mother has been going to the same doctor for decades. Now that she is 80, should she switch to a geriatrician?

Dear Reader: There’s a lot to be said for a doctor-patient relationship that has built trust over the years. Switching to a geriatrician may not be a good idea – but consulting a geriatrician could be a very good idea. Geriatricians specialize in the health of older adults.

Older adults have many of the same medical conditions as adults in their 40s, 50s and 60s. But the implications of these illnesses can be different when a person is 70 or older. Put simply, many people over 70 place more value on the quality of their remaining life than the length of their remaining life.

Geriatricians probably understand this balance better than most physicians who see younger adults. Geriatricians are especially trained to provide patients with practical advice, suggesting changes to enhance safety, nutrition, function and mobility.

Here’s an example. Not long ago a 90-year-old patient of mine developed metastatic cancer. His life expectancy was no longer than a year without treatment, but there were treatments that

He consulted with a geriatrician, who asked the patient questions. How would he feel about the time and travel that would be required to undergo treatment?

How bothered would he be by various side effects the treatment might cause? And by symptoms that might be caused by the disease itself, particularly if it was left untreated? The geriatrician didn’t urge any particular course of action; she helped the patient understand the issues.

When he had answered all the questions, the patient decided to forgo treatment. He was feeling well enough to travel, and there were a few places he really wanted to see. If he were to undergo treatment, he would have to remain in town for several months. He also traded off the side effects of treatment against the extra months of life he might get from treatment.

Geriatricians are also alert to the potential harmful effects of

medications. Older adults often have numerous health problems that require multiple medications, and the more medications a person takes, the higher the risk of drug interactions.

In addition, older adults are more vulnerable to side effects from medications. Their bodies process drugs differently than younger people’s bodies do. Doctors not as well versed in caring for older patients are more likely to mistake medication effects for dementia or depression.

Finally, geriatricians are more likely to recommend an occupational therapist, who can help with simple changes that make it easier and safer for older people to accomplish everyday activities such as cooking or cleaning. Geriatricians also understand how to muster home health services.

There are ways to help your mother stay in her home for more time.

So, I’d recommend that your mother ask her current doctor, or friends and neighbors, about good geriatricians who practice in your area.

Word to the wise is sufficient Dear Teens: The good news is that a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse has found that in the past year fewer teens consumed alcohol or used illegal drugs.

The bad news is that some teens are turning to legal drugs, such as painkillers, mood stimulants and even cough syrup to get high. A government study revealed that as many as one in every 14 high school students has confessed to “fairly recently” using over-thecounter cough and cold medicine to achieve a high.

It was also discovered that up to 10 percent of high school seniors were stealing the prescription painkiller Vicodin from their parents’ medicine cabinets. Parents have been encouraged to discard any unused medications when they no longer are taking them.

Marijuana remained the single most abused illegal drug among teens, although its use has dropped slightly. Over 11 percent of eighth-graders reported using it, compared to 25 percent of 10th-graders and 31 percent of high school seniors. One-third of eighth-graders admitted that at some time in their lives they had consumed alcohol, compared to half of all 10th-graders and two-thirds of the surveyed high school seniors.

Even though these percentages appear to be high, the percentages decreased slightly from previous years, and that’s a positive trend. Of course, some of the teens who admitted to consuming alcohol might have tried it only one time to satisfy their curiosity and found out that they didn’t like its taste and have never tried it again.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Another recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found fewer U.S. teens are smoking cigarettes, or being sexually active, but texting while driving is now prevalent and is causing a higher rate of teen driver crashes. If you text while driving, STOP for safety’s sake! A word to the wise is sufficient.

Dr. Wallace: Both of my parents were born in Germany. I have been there numerous times with my family. They come from the region of Bavaria.

My parents want me to spend my senior year in Munich, a city in Bavaria, to learn to read and write German better than I do now.

My problem is that I don’t want to spend my last year of high school in Germany. I speak German fluently and I can read and write German, but not rapidly. As a prelaw student in college, I really don’t think I will need to write and read German superbly. Also, I have many friends and I want to graduate with them.

My parents say the choice of spending my senior year in Germany is up to me. I’d like to hear your comments. – Margot, Green Bay, Wisc.

Dear Margot: Stay in your present high school and graduate with your fellow students. If you decide to brush up on the German language, spend a summer in Germany and, if possible, live with a German family.

Charles Baudouin said, “No matter how hard you work for success, if your thought is saturated with the fear of failure, it will kill your efforts, neutralize your endeavors and make success impossible.”

That can apply at the bridge table. In today’s deal, though, South has to try to neutralize the threat of East’s heart suit. South is in three no-trump and West leads the heart six. What should declarer do?

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart (given the lead), four diamonds and one club. At least two more tricks are available from the club suit. But is there any danger?

If, at trick one, declarer plays low from the dummy and wins East’s nine with his king, then, when he takes the losing club finesse, West will lead his second heart and the defenders will win one club and four hearts.

The result will be the same if South plays dummy’s heart 10 and takes East’s jack with his king.

Instead, declarer should call for dummy’s queen. East has to take the trick with his ace; otherwise, South gets two heart tricks. But what does East do now?

If he leads another heart, he gives declarer two tricks in the suit. So he shifts to the spade king.

South could win that trick, but does better to duck it. Whatever happens after that, declarer takes at least one spade, one heart, four diamonds and three clubs (and can squeeze East in the majors for an overtrick).

Finally, the curious may work out how East-West can defeat three no-trump if declarer allows East to win trick one with his heart nine.
