During the past few weeks I’ve gotten a number of requests for identification of a large – no, make that huge – plant dominating the landscape in select areas throughout Kane County.

Although the emails had different authors, the gist of each question was the same: What the heck is this enormous, purple-stemmed plant with the globes of green flowers?

One of the many reasons I love great angelica, Angelica atropurpurea, is that, just as robins are unmistakable birds and white-tailed deer are unmistakable mammals, this behemoth, when in bloom, is an unmistakable member of local wetland

communities.

The smooth, purple stem, alluded to in the scientific name, is one giveaway; the rounded umbels (think umbrellas) of flowers bursting forth like so many late-June fireworks is another.

That people are inquiring about this plant is, to me, an advocate for all our local, natural treasures, great news. But what really makes me smile is that their inquiries mean these folks are outside enjoying our area’s many fine wetlands. For great angelica doesn’t grow just anywhere.

As Dick Young pointed out in his book “Kane County Wild Plants & Natural Areas,” great angelica is somewhat uncommon, preferring wet areas fed by springs. Provide those conditions, along with plentiful sunshine, and look out – this stunning member of the parsley family can grow to heights of 8 to 10 feet.

Angelica’s heavenly name can be traced back to its European cousins – other species of the same genus.

Those angelicas were alleged to have near-magical curative powers. John Gerard, a noted 16th century botanist and herbalist, wrote angelica “cureth the bitings of mad dogs and all other venomous beasts.”

Other practitioners credited the plant with curing anything from fever and ague to poisoning, as well as suffering brought on by evil spells and hexes. In fact, according to one legend, the name “angelica” is derived from an incident long ago where an angel appeared in a dream and revealed the plant would cure plague.

I don’t know about that, and thank goodness we don’t need to. But our native angelica does have another fine quality besides its beauty. Mr. Young mentions the hollow stems, once dried

to remove the plant’s acrid juices, can be carved into flutes and whistles.

Like all things beautiful, great angelica will fade – sooner rather than later. You still can catch a glimpse of its grandeur in select highgrade wetlands throughout Kane County – as well as in the rain garden in front of the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. Although the flowers have begun to turn to seed, our angelica still can be seen towering over its wildflower neighbors, with no mad dogs or other venomous beasts (save for a few bees and native spiders) in sight.

Fourth of July events at Pottawatomie Park

WHAT: The St. Charles Park District celebration features a free fireworks show. Refreshments, from hot dogs and bratwurst to popcorn and ice cream, will be available at the River View Miniature Golf concession stand.

WHEN: Today. The fireworks show starts at dusk. The Fox Valley Concert Band will appear from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the amphitheater in Pottawatomie Park, followed by Hello Dave at 6 p.m.

Sky concert set in Batavia

Annual Riverwalk tour set for Aug. 15 Registration prices increase after Sunday

ST. CHARLES – Residents are invited in August to take a unique look at the Fox River corridor in downtown St. Charles.

The ninth annual St. Charles Riverwalk historical tour and scavenger hunt will be at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 15.

The 4K tour route will begin and end at the Pottawatomie Park Grand Pavilion, 8 North Ave., St. Charles, according to the St. Charles River Corridor Foundation, the event’s organizer.

The tour will be filled with beautiful views and iconic landmarks, including the River North Gateway, Bob Leonard Walkway and the summer sculpture exhibition at Mt. St. Mary Park, said John Rabchuk, the foundation’s vice president.

During the event, participants can read about different stops on the tour from a printed guide or listen to an audio tour on their smartphones or MP3 players.

LOCAL BRIEF Forest Preserve District plans Firefly Fireworks

ST. CHARLES – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has planned its Firefly Fireworks program from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Campton Forest Preserve, 4N379 Town Hall Road, St. Charles.

The walk will start at dusk.

All ages are welcome.

The registration fee is $2 a person.

After a long night of training, the new servicemen promptly awoke at 8 o’clock the next morning. As they began their walk to the cafeteria for breakfast, “The Star-Spangled Banner” began to play. Uncertain of how to respond, the men quickly shuffled to attention and saluted as the national anthem rang and the American flag rose in the morning sky.

The song came to an end, and Zimmerman remembers the powerful message from his drill instructor: “If you didn’t just get tingles down your spine, you’re in the wrong place and here for the wrong reasons.”

The morning proved to be a long-lasting memory for Zimmerman, who is now superintendent of the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission.

“To be there that first day and have that national anthem play … was just very surreal, and I can picture that happening clear as day even though that was 10 years ago,” he said.

Penned more than 200 years ago, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” America’s national anthem, still exudes the same wonder and beauty for American citizens as the morning it was written.

‘What so proudly we hail’d ...’

On Sept. 13, 1814, the Battle at Fort McHenry raged late into the night off the coast of Baltimore. After burning the Capitol building Aug. 24, 1814,

the British decided to attack vital seaports, turning their attention to Baltimore and its city harbor. The crucial battle lasted 25 hours, with continuous British bombardment.

During the morning of Sept. 14 of that year, the firing stopped and smoke slowly began to fade. A young lawyer watched the battle’s aftermath from a ship several miles away.

Moved by the sight of the American flag still waving above Fort McHenry, he was inspired to write a poem that would encapsulate not only American history but the sentiment of a nation.

‘Whose broad stripes and bright stars ...’

by Congress under the approval of President Herbert Hoover in 1931. The poem contains four verses, but only the first is commonly sung.

Today, the anthem can be heard during national holidays, military occasions and before sporting events varying from Friday night football games to the Stanley Cup playoffs.

“There’s always some pride involved in the national anthem, so you want to make sure you play it so that it sounds good,” St. Charles East band director Jim Kull said. Even though it is a piece his students play often, Kull notes its importance is never lost.

“It’s a way to take a moment to honor and respect what we have been given,” said Bethany Nelson, community relations director at Cambridge Lakes Charter School in Pingree Grove. Nelson directed the school’s fifth-grade choir as it sang the national anthem June 19 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark

Famous for fireworks, bonfires and cookouts, the Fourth of July also is a time to reflect on the nation’s history, echoed in the famous lyrics of Key’s “Star-Spangled Banner.”

“If you sit down and you go through the words ... there’s a great deal of meaning and a great deal of observation,” Anderson said. “He noticed things, and I believe the words – if you do them slowly, and take time to look at them and listen to them and digest them – it says a lot [about] what he was feeling.”

Anderson advises people to stop and slow down for a moment during the holiday.

“I think that, as we get older, we take so much for granted and that’s just a normal situation for all human beings,” he said. “There’s flowers out there; the flag is flying – that we take all that for granted. We just walk by when we should stop.”

Cambridge Lakes Charter School student Jade Evans thinks of “honor,” while her classmate Julissa Baez said she is “proud of what this country has done.”

“Everybody who has served has a connection with the national anthem and the flag,” Zimmerman said. “It’s usually a sound time, and they are very respectful toward the national anthem and the flag.”

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson also holds his own opinions on the anthem.

“From my point of view, it means more to people over the age of 50,” Anderson said. “It’s a comment on how we grew up.”

For fifth-graders, service members, those older than 50

and everyone in between, the anthem’s meaning may vary but its importance remains true.

“It can be – and should be – a focal point, not just for the village of Elburn but for Kane County, the state of Illinois and the United States,” Anderson said.

They later moved to Texas, where they had their daughter Kristen. After Texas, they came to the Chicagoland area. Hank’s professional life took him on journeys around the world including China and the UK. Hank eventually moved closer to his parents and youngest brother Ted and his family in Macomb, Michigan.

Hank loved to joke, and was always there for his daughter Kristen. He will always be with her, and everyone else he met. He was a loving father, a giving and caring friend, and more important a good man, who was taken too soon.

A memorial Service to honor Hank’s life will be held on July 11th from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the VFW in Batavia, Illinois; 645 South River Street, 60510.

There will be another service for Hank at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at a later date. Both services are open to the public.

14 Shadwick King arguments, sentencing moved to July 31 Original court date for Geneva man was Aug. 5

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Geneva man convicted of murdering his wife will find out this month whether he will receive a new trial or a prison Shadwick s e n t e n c e , a c - King cording to court records.

The next court date for Shadwick King, 48, was moved up to July 31 from Aug. 5 for a hearing on arguments for a new trial.

The date change was made June 17, according to court records.

The August date initially was chosen in part because of another trial on Kane County Judge James Hallock’s calendar that was scheduled to begin in June, Kane County Pub-

lic Defender Kelli Childress wrote in an email in May. Childress is representing King in the case.

If Hallock denies the defense’s motion for a new trial, the hearing will continue on to King’s sentencing.

King was convicted March 16 of first-degree murder in the July 6, 2014, death of his wife, Kathleen, 32.

A 12-member jury took about 5½ hours to deliberate the case.

Childress on April 15 filed a 36-page motion for King, asking the court to vacate the finding of guilty for King or to grant him a new trial based on what she stated were multiple errors made by the prosecution and the court.

Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams on May 4 filed an 18-page response, asking the court to deny Childress’ motion and refuting the claims written in it.

BATAVIA – It costs more than $3,000 to enroll a student in the kindergarten enrichment program offered by the Batavia Park District.

Noting that might be a prohibitive amount for many low-income and homeless residents, Batavia United Way hopes to fund scholarships for qualified applicants to assist or completely pay for this cost with the launch of Success By 6.

Batavia United Way is seeking partners for this program, with donations going directly to early childhood education, according to a news release.

According to Melinda Kintz, executive director of the Batavia United Way, Success By 6 scholarships will supplement the partial scholarships currently offered by the Batavia Park District, the release stated.

“Last year, as a pilot program, Chip In Batavia successfully helped several families so they could send their kindergarten student to the enrichment class,” Kintz stated in the release. “The baton on this project has been passed to Batavia United Way for the upcoming school year, and Chip In will continue to support these same children in a variety of other ways.”

Businesses, clubs and individuals are encouraged to help some of the youngest Batavians by donating to the program.

“We are pleased that the Batavia Mothers Club and the Tri-Cities Exchange Club are the first to contribute to Success By 6,” Kintz stated in the

release. “But a lot more funding is necessary to assist all those who are eligible.”

The pair can attest to how difficult it is for an entire classroom if one or more students haven’t had the chance to learn the necessary skills to excel in school, the release stated.

“Many of the children we plan to serve have not attended preschool and received the related educational and social benefits of a classroom setting,” Hoffman stated in the release.

“It is our goal to have the child ‘caught up’ to those who are further along so that by first grade, the playing field is evened out, any gaps closed and the foundation will be set for better learning in the years ahead,” Hillquist added in the release.

More than fireworks Independence Day has become one of the most festive days of the year in the United States. Every year, you can count on fireworks, picnics, parades, concerts and other events that can bring huge crowds of people together to celebrate a day recognized as America’s birthday.

That is appropriate. The anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence certainly is a date worthy of celebration. But as with most holidays, there is a serious side to the Fourth of July, and it’s worth spending time to ponder the day’s deep importance.

In today’s edition of the Kane County Chronicle, you will find a story that addresses our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It is more than just a song.

The national anthem was inspired by the sight of the American flag still waving after a crucial battle that lasted more than a day. That message still is relevant today. Although the country continues to go through difficult periods, the flag is

still there. We remain a free nation, capable of tremendous achievements.

When the anthem is played, it’s an opportunity to stand at attention, face the American flag and acknowledge the sacrifices made by many to make its words ring true. If you happen to be at the United Center when the Blackhawks are playing, the anthem can be a time to stand and join in the tradition of applauding during Jim Cornelison’s stirring rendition. The point is, it’s proper to stop other activities and pay attention to the message. We enjoy protection by those in our military, and there is reason to show respect for those efforts.

Those who want to get out and enjoy Independence Day activities will have many options throughout the day in Kane County. The National Weather Service forecast for this weekend suggests conditions will be ideal for such gatherings. There will be food, music, fireworks and more.

It’s a great occasion for a party, but the day means more than that.

A milestone for the environment in the Deepwater Horizon disaster THE WASHINGTON POST The saga of what some have called the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history passed a milestone Thursday.

BP, the company in charge of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded a mile above the Gulf of Mexico seafloor five years ago, announced it has reached a comprehensive agreement with the federal government, as well as the states and the municipalities that were affected by the three million barrels of oil that gushed into the water.

The amount of BP money that will flow into Gulf Coast restoration over the next two decades is prodigious. Both BP and the government deserve credit for heading off a nasty and prolonged legal battle.

What we still don’t know – and may not know for a very long time – is the extent of the damage the spill caused.

The multinational oil firm will pay an additional $18.7 billion over the next 18 years to settle various environmental and economic claims stemming from the accident.

A rough estimate of BP’s total

bill is now available: more than $50 billion, according to Bloomberg Business, which is more than the company previously set aside to cover the costs of the accident. Under a law passed after the spill, most of the new money will go to the gulf. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican whose state stands to reap nearly $7 billion, promised Thursday to fund a program to stop coastal erosion.

President Barack Obama determined in 2010 to demand accountability from BP without bankrupting the company. The

latter goal served two purposes: maintaining BP’s capability to pay claims and maintaining the United States’ attractiveness to foreign investors, making clear that disasters, such as the Deepwater Horizon spill, would not be used as pretext to suck them dry. The upside for BP in Thursday’s settlement is the company has essentially agreed to a payment plan, spreading its financial commitment into predictable and manageable chunks.

Although BP’s legal battles are nearly over, the effort to assess and restore the gulf

is not. The company claims the gulf’s ecosystems have been remarkably resilient, and there is truth to this. The region is not in the dire state that anyone watching oil spew into the water five years ago might have anticipated. But environmental groups and the government say it’s too early to tell the full effects.

From here, the challenge will be ensuring federal, state and local authorities spend their money well, concentrating on the most pressing environmental problems facing the gulf.

Reading the articles and letters to the editor about a state reducing funding for social services, hospitals and other disadvantages. These organizations fail to mention the one important point: All these agencies are uninsured just like millions of other individuals.

The Democratic party for Illinois for a decade has increased the social programs, but has failed to pay the premium for that. Illinois is broke, and it’s because of the ruthless promising and spending of the leaders of the Democratic party. If the social agency had received the correct funding, then they would not be in a problem like they are today. The citizens of Illinois do not work at the future of reduced spending.

Look in the mirror and see who is behind the shortages.

Be careful

Pitcher Curtis leads the Midwest League in saves

He stands 5-foot-10, throws left-handed and his fastest pitch reaches low 90s on a good day.

But that hasn’t stopped Curtis from earning the spot not only as the Kane County Cougars ninth-inning man, but also as the Midwest League’s leader in saves.

“Zac is a guy that has earned his role,” Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek said. “He’s gone out there and done his job when he’s been called on. He’s deceiving and mixes pitches well to keep guys off balance.

He throws hard enough and he’s tough to lock in on and has shown that each time he goes out there.”

Curtis picked up his 17th save of the season (in 19 opportunities) Friday against Clinton, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to lower his ERA to 1.84.

As a starter throughout his four years at Middle Tennessee State University, Curtis never really had bullpen experience. After he had pitch a few too many innings, coaches of Hillsboro, where Curtis played his baseball last season, wanted to move him to a relief role.

Challenging the rules of the game I certainly have been accused at times of making up a baseball rule, but it’s something I’ve never done.

Umpires don’t make rules – they enforce them.

That doesn’t mean that I like every rule. Earlier this year I even wrote about one rule that I especially dislike – the dead-ball balk rule – which took away the first career high school home run of St. Francis’ Brett Whelton.

The rule is specific to the National Federation of High Schools, but not part of the Official Baseball Rules. I’d like to see the NFHS adopt the OBR rule.

Thinking of that, I was curious about what other rules my fellow umpires would like to see changed. I received some great feedback from my peers in blue.

While summer weekend youth tournaments use time limits, it’s unlikely they’ll ever be added to the NFHS rules. What if a two-hour time limit was applied to high school games? Several umpires told me they’d love it.

How about coaches having to make a rule reference

New Wave Lacrosse founder and coach Andy Thompson, 34, was recently named the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association Person of the Year. Thompson, who has also been involved with the St. Charles North lacrosse program for 12 years and is currently an assistant coach, caught up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey in the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat to talk about what it meant to win the award, his family life, and a particular personal trial he battled. Here’s an edited transcript:

What does it mean to you to receive this honor?

It really is the most meaningful award I’ve ever received. Not just in lacrosse, but in anything. First off, all the coaches in the state vote on this award, so it means a lot to me that enough coaches voted for me. Also, the award is about more than just coach-

before questioning an umpire about a call? I’m not talking about a judgment call here, but when a coach questions whether or not we’ve enforced a rule correctly. If the coach can’t cite the rule, shouldn’t we disallow him from questioning us?

The check swing is arguably the toughest call to make.

Why not abolish it? From now on, let’s make it a swing.

That’ll end the arguments, which you hear every single time because one team always believes you got the call wrong.

I’ve heard mixed responses regarding the start of the IHSA baseball season. Some umpires would like it to move to late April to avoid the nasty weather in March and early April, while others like how it currently is because the season already ends in June and the busy summer travel season then starts.

I don’t think I know anyone who likes the hybrid stance rule, but then again, I can see why it’s been implemented.

Balancing being heavily involved in so much lacrosse and family life must be difficult. How have you managed to do that?

That’s a very good question. To be honest, I probably haven’t completely balanced it, but it all starts with having a very understanding wife.

QUILL THE UMPIRE CHRIS ROLLIN WALKER or windup position, baserunners may not. But, if it’s such a good rule, I have to ask, why is it only applied in high school?

Here’s a good one. Why are coaches allowed to leave their coaching box? They can’t do that in football or basketball, so why are they permitted in baseball? If a coach enters the field of play without permission to do so, shouldn’t he be ejected?

If the coach wants clarification, he can call time out and we’ll come to him.

Here’s a rule change recommendation that I’d love to see, but will never see – permit wood bats only. This would all but eliminate illegal bat use but, since the bat industry is worth millions, this never will happen.

Several umpires said they dislike batters being allowed to wear elbow pads and other significant protection in the box. It’s not that they don’t

want players to avoid injury, but they’ve seen so many players take advantage of the body armor to reach base.

One of my oldest umpire friends would like to see coaches at all levels be required to wear helmets when coaching the bases. It makes sense to be as safe as possible.

They require MLB coaches to do it, why not make coaches at all levels do it?

I swear every baseball player wears a rope necklace but Rule 2-1-12 of the NFHS states that it’s illegal to do so, “Jewelry shall not be worn except for religious or medical medals….” I say, “Let them wear jewelry! Let them wear jewelry!”

One umpire told me that parents and fans shouldn’t be allowed to attend games.

Another told me that assistant coaches should not be allowed to talk.

Both of those gave me a good laugh. I certainly have fought through days where I wished the assistant coaches were mutes and that parents and fans were stuck miles away in standstill traffic. Of course, that’s not just us um-

pires. Regardless of your job, no one wants to work with those who have become pests.

The most common response I’ve received, however, was about a universal set of rules. Having one rulebook for NFHS and OBR, along with additional rules for safety, re-entry, etc., is something a lot of umpires said they’d love to someday see. Too bad, they likely won’t.

I’ll make sure I forward a copy of this column to the IHSA’s Craig Anderson, who oversees the licensing and education programs for officials. I’m not sure if he’ll take it seriously or if it’ll give him a laugh or two. Then again, he may not even read it since I’m sure he’s pretty busy preparing for his new position as IHSA executive director next January.

I found out last summer that I had thyroid cancer, but it was a very curable type.

As cliché as it sounds, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. That truly means something to me because after going through everything that I did, I am only more motivated and excited to get out there and coach.

Getting the chance to beat this and continue to do what I love doing was something I will never forget.

WEEKEND LIFE Is it too late to turn back time?

I hope by now you trust me, because I am going to talk about a subject that some of you may find controversial. This column is just meant to make you think about the future and quality of our relationships. It’s just a theory, nothing more.

What really concerns me about the future of relationships is that while there are fewer positive influences out there that teach us how to relate well with one another, there are more negative influences that show us how to do it poorly. We’re on at least our third generation of children since the end of World War II, that have grown up in households where both parents are working. Before that, there was always at least one parent figure at home that taught and modeled family and societal values. After the ‘50s, when many moms and dads continued to work outside of the home, day care centers sprang up to take over some of the child care responsibilities. More pressure

In another 20 years, there will be no one left that even remembers what it was like to live in a time where family success was as important as achieving success in your job.

Our changing culture, for many unfortunate reasons, has desensitized us into believing that it’s not a big deal to get drunk, do drugs, be promiscuous, stick the kid in front of the TV or video game instead of parenting them, have a police record, cheat on our spouse, yell and scream at each other, etc. Television and other media sources have taught our youth that it’s cool to be bad. How can we stop this trend before we forget how to find our way back to being our very best?

I know at this time in our world we are not inclined to censor content, although in my opinion parents should at

the very least install parental controls on their televisions, but can’t we insist on a healthy balance in what we are subjected to? You know it’s funny how we shelter our children when it comes to Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, but with very little else. So, in one hand they hold onto their Christmas stockings and in the other they play their violent video games. Let’s insist on better programming, better music, better games for our children, and better behavior for all of us. How we raise our children, what we expect of our own behavior, how we treat our spouse, our neighbors, and what we demand of those entities that have an influence on our family will effect the future of the world we live in greatly.

Consider site before planting a river birch tree While this unseasonably wet summer isn’t ideal, some plant species are loving every minute of it. Tropical plants like hibiscus and cannas love the extra water and have shown their appreciation in beautiful ways.

One of the most popular trees in the garden center industry, the river birch (Betula nigura), especially loves this weather. Unfortunately for the river birch, this is unseasonal weather and we are still below the average rainfall for the year. And rainfall is just one of many factors that homeowners should take into account before planting a river birch.

We receive many calls at the help desk about river birches each year. Here are some things to consider before you plant one.

As the name implies the river birch really does prefer moist to wet soil, ideally where the soil around it never actually dries out. As I describe the river birch’s high water needs, almost all homeowners promise to maintain a strict water schedule for such a beautiful specimen. But as they water they strip the soil of valuable nutrients that the tree needs in order to survive.

River birches frequently become chlorotic and need iron treatments to keep the leaves a lush green. This sounds easy enough until you try to treat a 20 foot tree, which can be costly.

Even though the description of the river birch states it is cold tolerant to zone 4, without a steady water supply the tree cannot function. The leaves

will turn yellow or curl and dry up.

The tree will start dropping leavings and branches may start dying. It is also susceptible to leaf blight – a fungus where the leaves turn yellow, then brown and the tree can lose up to 40 percent of its canopy. You can prevent blight by cleaning up your leaves every fall to prevent the spread of fungus. Alkaline soil is another major issue homeowners encounter with river birches so check your soil before you plant.

It is human nature to want what we can’t have and gardeners are no exception. River birches are a beautiful addition to any yard but consider the site and make an educated decision before investing in a tree. If your yard has low spots or flood areas, you may have found your ideal deciduous tree, otherwise consider other options.

Mind-body techniques can relieve chronic pain Dear Doctor K: I suffer from chronic pain. My doctor suggested that I look into mind-body therapies. Why? Is it possible to think your way out of pain?

Dear Reader: I wouldn’t describe mind-body therapies as “thinking your way out” of any kind of suffering. But mind-body therapies surely can help reduce chronic suffering, including chronic pain.

Pain signals sent up the nerves from your body register in pain centers deep inside your brain. But signals from those pain centers then are processed by the “thinking part” of your brain. That part, in turn, is affected by your emotions, which come from a different part of your brain.

So, yes, how the rest of your brain responds to the pain registering in the pain centers of the brain can greatly affect how you experience it. Certain types of pain may respond to mindbody therapies. That’s good news for anyone who struggles with backache, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, arthritis or the many other causes of ongoing pain.

How you feel pain is also influenced by your genetic makeup,

Drugs can effectively relieve pain, but they often have unpleasant side effects when used for a long time.

I spoke to Dr. Ellen Slawsby, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. She suggested that the following mind-body techniques can help take your mind off your pain: • Deep breathing. Inhale deeply, hold for a few seconds and exhale. To help you focus, you can use a word or phrase to guide you. For example, you may want to breathe in “peace” and breathe out “tension.”

• Relaxation response. The stress response pumps up heart rate and puts the body’s systems

on high alert. The relaxation response is a natural antidote.

Close your eyes and relax all your muscles. Then concentrate on deep breathing. Continue doing this for 10 to 20 minutes.

Afterward, sit quietly for a minute while your thoughts return.

• Meditation with guided imagery. Begin deep breathing, paying attention to each breath.

Then listen to calming music or imagine being in a restful environment.

• Mindfulness. Pick any activity you enjoy and become fully immersed in it. Notice every detail of what you are doing and how your senses and emotions are responding.

• Yoga and tia chi. These exercises incorporate breath control, meditation and movements to stretch and strengthen muscles.

• Positive thinking. When we’re ill, we often tend to become fixated on what we aren’t able to do. Retrain your focus on what you can do.

Mother reflects on her decision Dear Dr. Wallace: I’m not writing for advice.

I’m just baring my soul.

I know it will make me feel better if I put my feelings on paper. And if my message helps another teen, it would be frosting on the cake. I had a baby out of wedlock and decided to keep her.

When the baby was 3, I met a guy and I thought I loved him. Since he didn’t want a 3-year-old hanging around, he convinced me that it would be better if I got rid of her. I had two choices – send her to my mother or put her up for adoption. Thank God my mother took her!

My relationship with this guy lasted about a year, and then he dumped me for another woman. For the first few weeks, I was stunned and depressed and felt very sorry for myself until I realized that I needed my daughter and she needed me.

It’s been almost four months since my daughter and I have been reunited. It breaks my heart to think that I gave up my beautiful child for a guy who was just using me.

Even today, my daughter will cry if I leave the house. She is afraid that I might not return.

How can two coaches differ so much on a diet for an athlete? – James, Lodi, California Dear James: According to Robert Haas, a clinical nutritionist, high-protein diets were once considered an athlete’s diet, but recent research does not agree with this theory.

Now, high-carbohydrate diets for athletes are in. A high-carbohydrate diet promotes the storage of glycogen, which the body needs for endurance, in the muscles and the liver.

Haas notes that Swedish researchers found that if people consume a high-protein diet and then use an exercise cycle, they can ride about half an hour before becoming exhausted. But if they consume a high-carbohydrate diet, they can ride three or four times longer than they did on a high-protein diet.

To be a philosophic bridge player, you need independence of thought – perhaps except when on defense. Then often, but not always, you and your partner must be of the same mind in how to defeat the contract.

In this deal, for example, how should East and West card to defeat four hearts after West leads the diamond ace?

Many players reply to a takeout double by mentioning a suit without a jump, whatever their pointcount. They expect partner to be psychic. When you have game-invitational values, jump in a suit. Yes, you would prefer to have a five-card suit, but there are times when you have to hope for the best.
