I

’ve probably been to about three dozen Kane County Cougars games as a photographer, but last Thursday was only my third game as a spectator.

It was nice to really soak in the ambiance, eat a bratwurst,

get powdered sugar from my funnel cake all over my shirt and, most importantly, spend time with some very important people in my life.

That’s what’s so great about going to a Cougars game, they keep the kids entertained – like

with their between-inning races and games, as pictured – and the adults get to watch great baseball. It also helps that the Cougars are doing really well in their standings.

We stayed until after the fireworks, and the kids got a

chance to run around the bases under the lights. They were thrilled.

So, thank you, Cougars fans and staff, for making Fifth Third Bank Ballpark a great night out for everyone.

Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness group to host golf outing

By EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness organization based in St. Charles will host its second Golf Tournament and Dinner on July 14 at Boulder Ridge Country Club, 350 Boulder Drive, Lake in the Hills.

Proceeds will be used to increase ovarian cancer

awareness as part of the Veterinary Outreach Program and to support continued sponsorship of Ohlin, a labrador being trained in cancer detection at Penn Vet Working Dog Center in Philadelphia.

Vallie Szymanski, executive director of OCSA, said increasing awareness for ovarian cancer is crucial because of the quiet nature of

the disease, Szymanski said ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at stage three or four due to symptoms that can be overlooked.

People do not associate bloating and cramps to cancer, Szymanski said.

Honorary Chairman Rafer Weigel, who works in Chicago area media, will welcome 1985 Super Bowl champions and former Chicago Bears

players Jim Morrissey and Otis Wilson.

Railway safety seminar headed to Maple Park

St. Charles McDonald’s on west side reopens

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – It didn’t take long for the reopened McDonald’s on the west side of St. Charles to draw in customers.

“We actually had people lined up before we opened,” Brandon Ross, McDonald’s area supervisor for Yanni Management, said Thursday.

The restaurant, located at 1915 W. Main St., opened its doors to the public at 5 a.m.

Thursday after being closed for more than four months.

The company’s typical 90- to 100-day turnaround on building projects was delayed in part by on-and-off inclement weather since the store closed for construction Feb. 23, Ross said.

The company first tore down the previous 55-yearold building and built a new 5,234-square-foot restaurant that sits farther west on the property and is parallel to West Main Street.

Customers on Thursday praised the restaurant’s modern look and open space.

“I like it. It looks like something you’d see in the city,” said Steven Leitner of St. Charles.

Leitner on Thursday ate breakfast at the McDonald’s with three of his friends.

The boys, who all attend St. Charles North High School, made plans to be there for the first day after they saw the restaurant’s outdoor digital reader board on Wednesday advertising the 5 a.m. nextday opening.

Leitner and his friends also liked the restaurant’s digital menu board and new covered outdoor patio. Other additions include a double drive-thru, mini-waterfall, a couple of tables with built-in LED lights, and about 50 more seats than the previous building, Ross said.

Many of the patrons looked forward to having one of their usual hangouts back. Ron and Carol Vial of St. Charles often would eat at the McDonald’s, including on Thursday. They live about six blocks away from the restaurant.

When McDonald’s was closed for construction, the Vials said they would eat at the St. Charles Burger King instead.

Elburn resident Craig Swan said his substitute locations during the closure were the Wasco and Elburn McDonald’s locations.

Swan said he comes to St. Charles often to visit with friends, and they once again will make the McDonald’s part of their rotation of meeting places.

Two hurt in separate crashes on Kirk Road

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A man and a woman were taken to a local hospital after two separate Thursday afternoon crashes, one involving a motorcycle, on Kirk Road, said Randy Banker, Batavia deputy fire chief.

One crash involved an apparent head-on collision of two cars somewhere in the intersection of Kirk Road and Pine Street. The other crash involved a car and a motorcycle on Kirk Road about 100 yards north of the other crash, Banker said.

The Batavia Fire Department was dispatched to the crashes at 1:46 p.m. Thursday.

The two cars collided in the intersection and ended up in two different spots, Banker said. The car driven by the woman hit the traffic pole at the southwest corner of Kirk and Pine. The other car, driven by a male, ended up in a driveway of a home along Pine Street.

The man in the car in the driveway refused treatment at the scene, Banker said.

In the other crash, Banker said a male motorcycle driver was taken to a hospital, and the driver of the other car in that crash was uninjured.

The injuries of the man

and woman transported were not considered to be life-threatening at the time of the crash, Banker said.

Banker did not have any other information about the crash and deferred other questions about the incident to Batavia police, who were not immediately available for comment Thursday afternoon.

Batavia resident Ann Thomas on Thursday was returning to her Pine Street home when she saw two tow trucks at the end of her block and a police squad car blocking the other end. She lives a few houses directly west of the Kirk and Pine intersection.

Thomas said two red cars, each with front-end damage, were towed away from Pine Street at Kirk Road.

“Its whole front end was just crinkled up,” Thomas said of the smaller of the two cars.

The two cars towed were the cars involved in the intersection collision, Banker said.

The motorcycle in the other crash also was towed from the scene.

Traffic was rerouted in the area while police and fire crews responded to the crash.

Kirk Road and Pine Street were open to traffic Thursday afternoon after the crash scene was cleared.

Local firefighters plan ‘Warrior Night’ fundraiser

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Several area fire departments are teaming up to raise funds to purchase a vehicle for a wounded veteran.

“We want to make it happen, so we can take care of one guy,” said Geneva Fire Lt. Todd Loomis. “The military does so much for us.”

The veteran has not yet been identified.

The Associated Firefighters of Illinois, from Geneva Local 4287, West Chicago Local 3970, Batavia Local 3436, Elburn Local 4749 and St. Charles Local 3322, along with Firehouse Pizza and Grill in Geneva and the Kane County Cougars, are selling T-shirts for the AFFI Warrior program.

The program supports wounded veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts, which are $20 each, will go toward the purchase of the vehicle, Loomis said.

Geneva Firefighters Local 4287 will hold a Warrior Night fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. July 11 at Old Towne Pub, 201 W. State St., Geneva. T-shirts will be sold at the fundraiser, and a country band, Mason Rivers Band, will perform from 8 to 10:30 p.m.

The vehicle will be presented to the wounded veteran at a Kane County Cougars game Aug. 22, Loomis said.

GENEVA – A Geneva doctor’s privileges at Delnor Hospital in Geneva were suspended this week, officials said, while his medical license is temporarily suspended.

He is facing allegations of inappropriate sexual relations with several patients, and inappropriate prescribing of controlled substances.

In an emailed statement, Cadence Health Mark G. Lewis announced it has suspended Dr. Mark G. Lewis’ privileges this week, after learning of his license suspension.

“Cadence Health is aware of the serious allegations that have been made against Mark G. Lewis, M.D., by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation,” according to the statement.

“The safety and well-being

of Cadence patients is our top priority. We immediately suspended Dr. Lewis’ privileges at Delnor Hospital on July 2, 2014, when we became aware of his license suspension,” according to the statement.

“Dr. Lewis is an independent physician and is not employed by Cadence Health, nor is he a member of Cadence Medical Partners. Cadence will continue to monitor the IDFPR action against Dr. Lewis,” according to the statement.

Both Lewis’ physician and surgeon license and controlled substance license were suspended June 26 by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

He has a hearing scheduled for Wednesday before the an administrative law judge and the Medical Disciplinary Board.

A message seeking comment left at Lewis’ practice, American Family Doctor, which is at 2197 Blackberry Drive, Geneva, was not returned.

What it’s like to set up fireworks shows for Kane County Cougars games

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As he set up a fireworks display at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, Les Mayhew methodically went around to make sure all of the hundreds of fireworks shells were properly connected.

“It’s like paint by numbers,” said Mayhew, a compliance and training administrator for Melrose Pyrotechnics. He is in charge of making sure the fireworks shows that follow the Kane County Cougars games go off without a hitch.

Mayhew, 55, has worked for Melrose Pyrotechnics since 1987. His interest in fireworks began when he was a child, adding he “was always fascinated by them as a kid.”

Hours before the game was set to start, Mayhew set up the fireworks in a grassy area just outside the ballpark.

“I like to be finished before the start of the national anthem,” Mayhew said. “It takes a good three hours to set up for the show.”

“You are far enough away to make sure everything is safe, but you don’t get the full effect of the show,” he said.

For Mayhew, being around fireworks is a family affair.

His son, Tim, also works for Melrose Pyrotechnics, as does Mayhew’s wife, Sandy. She balances her part-time job at Melrose Pyrotechnics with

Library roof will need replacement, repairs

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Most of Geneva Public Library’s roof sections on the building at 127 James St., Geneva, are in bad shape and need to be replaced, according to an assessment by professional roof consultants.

The visual inspection of the 17-year-old roof made by Mac Brady Associates Inc., of LaGrange, recently was presented at a library board meeting.

“The inspection revealed distresses that can infiltrate into the roof system and building,” according to the results of Mac Brady’s report.

Other problems identified are areas of the gutter filled with granules and leaves, dormer eaves that are miss-

ing the drip edge that allows water into the roof system, sagging shingles from a deflected or deteriorated deck, downspouts clogged with leaves and debris, and missing apron flashing.

Also, a gutter is backpitched without positive draining, which creates a condition where the gutter is filled with debris, ice and water damming during winter, eventually weighing down the gutter and creating more of a back-pitch, according to the report.

Barrows-Lieb said much of the problems were because of poor workmanship or manufacturing, others because of different workers allowed on the roof and some from poor maintenance by the owner.

The library board approved hiring Mac Brady to do administration of roofing bids at a cost of $7,100.

David B. Hauge, 49, also was fined $3,000 and registered as a sex offender David B. Hauge as part of the conditions of his specialized sex offender probation. Hauge now lives in Elburn, court records show.

The South Elgin Police Department, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Geneva Police Department conducted a search warrant at his

South Elgin home in 2012. The action followed an online police investigation into persons trading and making available different pictures and video files of child pornography, court records show.

Police reported that Hauge had several depictions and videos of child pornography.

According to court records, Hague admitted to downloading and using a file-sharing program to download images and pictures of child pornography, court records show.

One of the files later was found on his computer hard drive, depicting a child under the age of 18 engaged in sexual conduct, court records show.

The terms of Hauge’s probation include that he cannot loiter or live within 500 feet of a school, day care center, swimming pool or other place where children congregate.

Hauge also cannot participate

in any online chat rooms or social media except for electronic mail, according to the terms of his probation.

Hauge also cannot knowingly contact anyone depicted in the child pornography found either on his computer or electronic storage media, or through a third person, according to the terms of his probation.

Hauge also cannot have unsupervised contact directly or indirectly, with any child under the age of 18; he cannot volunteer or be employed involving contact with children under age 18; nor access or view any obscene material depicting children who are nude or partially clothed, according to the terms of his probation.

Hauge also is subject to random unannounced searches by adult court services, among other restrictions and requirements, court records show.

D-302 to continue exploring digital partnerships with nearby districts

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland School District 302 remains interested in exploring a digital partnership with neighboring districts. The item was among the district’s goals for the upcoming school year, which were presented Monday night to the school board.

Also, a second parent satisfaction survey is planned.

District officials considered the first one to be a success, and they referred to it as an “annual” survey.

There also was some discussion about elementary hot lunch food service. The district currently does not offer such service at the elementary level.

The digital partnership item continues a discussion in which the Kaneland district was invited to join a consortium of districts, including Batavia, Wheaton-Warren-

ville, Naperville and Indian Prairie. Ultimately, Batavia and Kaneland dropped out, citing cost.

According to a document reviewed by board members, Kaneland “has continued to explore avenues of collaboration with other districts … that have similar interest in pooling resources” for such a partnership.

Asked at Monday’s meeting which districts were involved, Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler identified Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia and Burlington.

The document stated “work on this project will continue through the 2014-15 school year.”

On the topic of the parent survey, the document stated that 1,350 parents participated in the first survey, and that 1,400 comments were received. The document stated that building principals in the district will review the data with parents at “principal

coffee” meetings, and that “it will be important to remind parents how we are using the data next year to ensure active participation in the second administration of the survey.”

As for hot lunches at elementary schools, board member Teresa Witt said she was surprised that the matter remains on such a list when it didn’t seem feasible because of scheduling and cost issues.

The district document indicated that, according to a hot lunch parent survey, a majority of parents would be in favor of a hot lunch program at the elementary level, but that there were two key hurdles – an initial investment of $100,000 and that additional staff would be needed to make the schedule work.

Schuler said there had been some conversations, but the district had “not invested time” on the issue.

“We are in the right place,” Schuler said.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Bicycle Commission is working to make downtown Batavia more friendly for bicyclists.

The commission is working with Batavia MainStreet to encourage local businesses to promote bicycling.

Businesses can apply to become a Bicycle Friendly Batavia Business.

Business owners who apply have to agree to 15 of the 27 recommendations made by the Batavia Bicycle Commission, including such items as installing bicycle racks in front of their business, having restrooms available for bicyclists and providing places for bicyclists to recharge their cellphones.

“Our goal is to get people to stay in Batavia and to promote business in Batavia,” said Joanne Spitz said.

The Batavia Bicycle Commission for the past few months also has been working with the organization CHIP IN Batavia – Community Helpers Impacting People In Need to get bicycles to students and families in need in Batavia. So far, the commission has given out 15 bicycles.

“We reached out to a resident who lives in the Batavia Apartments, and he said the bicycle made a huge difference,” said Spitz, who also helped start the CHIP IN Batavia organization. “He was able to get to his job on time with it.”

All Spoked Up in Batavia inspects and repairs each bicycle.

The Rotary Club of Batavia donated $750 toward the cost of the inspections.

Stay safe this July 4 As far as birthday celebrations go, the Fourth of July is usually one of the best of the year.

July 4, 1776, is the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted, an announcement by the Continental Congress that signified they no longer considered themselves part of the British Empire and were forming a new nation, the United States of America, made up of the 13 colonies.

It has become a day of parties and barbecues, ball games and flying American flags. It is a day to celebrate the country and all it stands for, and to remember those who have died protecting and fighting for the truths and freedoms the country and its citizens have held self-evident for centuries.

That will be done locally this weekend, as municipalities and organizations hold parades, festivals and fireworks displays, as the nation celebrates its 238th birthday.

We encourage residents to attend these events, to display pride at being Americans and living in a country that, for all its faults, trials and tribulations, remains one of the most free and best nations in the world.

And we encourage you to do so safely, to show respect to yourself and your neighbors as you celebrate your country.

If you’re driving or boating, don’t drink. Wear sunscreen if you’re out in the sun. If you display the flag, do so honorably.

Leave the fireworks to professionals. Even sparklers need to be handled with care.

The Fourth of July is a day to celebrate. Please, as you wish America a happy birthday, do so responsibly.

ICC’s electrifying David and Goliath story Today, July 4, 2014, is Independence Day, but John Tomasiewicz and his neighbors remind me of under-funded, out-manned minutemen in the midst of battling King George III’s redcoats.

“We moved into Toll Brothers Bowes Creek Active Adult community in Elgin seven years ago and love it,” Tomasiewicz told me on the phone. The upscale, senior (55 and older) residential development and golf club “was a dream come true. I could golf, with my daughter and granddaughter living 15 minutes away.”

Today, Tomasiewicz is fighting to retain his property value and beautifully scenic front yard view. If Commonwealth Edison implements its Grand Prairie Gateway Project, out his front door, Tomasiewicz will face, not far away, the equivalent of a monstrous Optimus Prime.

“Last summer, for the first time, ComEd revealed their intentions to erect 345kV high-power tower transmission lines and 165-foot-high

“My neighbors formed the BCAA-Gateway Task Force/ Legal Fund to collect money for legal fees. Imagine having to spend $125,000 in six months fighting ComEd’s attorneys just to voice your opposition. We’re running dry.”

I contacted ComEd, whose spokesman, David O’Dowd, emailed that the new line would “ ... relieve transmission system congestion, which currently is resulting in increased costs to customers … provide a large pathway for cheaper energy ... and … displace older, less-efficient coal based generation ... .”

O’Dowd also forwarded information from the World Health Organization that concluded: “ … current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electro-

magnetic fields.”

“This story isn’t about transmission lines,” Tomasiewicz insisted. “The real story is about farmers, ranchers, first home buyers and senior citizens on fixed incomes having to spend incredible amounts of money on lawyers.”

He’s talking about legal representation to address the Illinois Commerce Commission, the public utility commission for the state, which is reviewing ComEd’s proposed route for the power lines.

“Most people don’t know that an ICC hearing is a court proceeding,” Tomasiewicz continued. “... It’s a David and Goliath story. With seemingly unlimited funds, ComEd can produce expert testimony that might ring true to ICC, leading to rulings against the little guy. If we don’t spend tens of thousands on legal fees, it’ll be too late to stop the ComEd bulldozer from clanking down our street.”

BCAA wants to persuade ComEd to install its cables underground. The reasons:

• To avoid destroying the visual aesthetics of their front and back yards.

• To avoid plummeting property values.

• To avoid the possibility of moderate and serious health issues.

“In my opinion, the ICC is a rubber stamp for ComEd,” Tomasiewicz said. “Resolutions were passed by Elgin, South Elgin and Kane County, and ComEd ignored each resolution and Elgin’s building codes.”

“It was just a scary thing,” Johnson said. “It was right on that first knuckle. That’s a tough spot to get hit. It was one of those that was questionable whether something might have been broke but he came in today and [he was OK].”

Kyle Schwarber, the Cubs’ first-round draft pick in June, started behind the plate Thursday and threw out one of two Chiefs who tried to steal on him.

Schwarber has seen occasional duty at catcher when he’s not playing left field.

Johnson makes up ground After a brutal Year 1 with the Cougars from a wins-losses standpoint last year, Johnson has climbed all the way back to a winning overall record with the team.

After Thursday’s win, Johnson is 110-108 overall at Kane County despite the Cougars going a franchise-worst 55-80 in 2013. This year’s Cougars are 55-28.

“I really don’t even think about that,” Johnson said. “We just come in every day and go to work. This is an unbelievable group of guys that play really well together. The chemistry is off the charts. You don’t have teams like this very often.

I only played on a couple of them my whole career.”

Johnson is fifth among Cougars managers in all-time wins, with Aaron Nieckula (285 wins) comfortably ahead.

The Cougars second baseman allowed the team to score three runs after two were out in the bottom of the fourth inning of Thursday’s 10-2 win against Peoria in front of 10,515 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

With two on and runners at second and third, Bote nubbed a slow grounder to third base, and he narrowly beat third baseman Rafael Medina’s throw across the diamond as the Cougars moved ahead, 3-0.

Bote’s infield single loomed larger when leadoff man Jake Hannemann followed with a single to right field. Carlos Penalver easily scored on the hit, and when Peoria right fielder Luis Perez’s peg to third base deflected off Bote, Bote dashed the final 90 feet for another run and a 5-0 Cougars lead.

Will De Bord returned home for his older brother’s wedding last weekend, the type of trip virtually all of his former St. Charles East classmates would take for granted during the heart of the school year, let alone summertime.

But De Bord is living a college lifestyle to which few can relate. At the Air Force Academy, even a weekend trek home for a sibling’s wedding does not come simply.

“It wasn’t easy at all,” De Bord said of receiving special permission to attend the wedding of his oldest brother, Brett. “It really helps that I was one of the groomsmen. They were understanding about it once I explained this is my brother’s wedding, and I’d do anything to get back for that because it’s family. I was lucky, very fortunate, to be back for those couple days.”

As most of De Bord’s old high school friends celebrate the Fourth of July at family cookouts and parties, De Bord, a member of Air Force’s men’s lacrosse team, is back at the academy near Colorado Springs, Colorado. A 2013 St. Charles East graduate, De Bord recently completed his first year at Air Force, a year that tested his physical and mental toughness on a daily basis.

“They expect everyone to be fit here,” De Bord said. “They’ve got some levels they want you to be at and you definitely have to abide by those, but I think at the end of the day, it definitely comes down to the mental side, just the will to keep going and keep excelling.”

De Bord arrived at the academy in late June 2013, about a month after his high school graduation, for six weeks of basic training. He said he lost about 10 pounds during training before launching into the heart of his highly regimented first year as a “fourth class cadet.”

His days were an exhausting blend of military training sessions, class, lacrosse practice, studying and other obligations, with few social privileges granted. De Bord anticipated a demanding year, but said he couldn’t have understood the extent of the challenges until experiencing them firsthand.

“It definitely takes a lot of work, and you have to remember the reasons why you’re here and really keep a level head,” said De Bord, who, along with his classmates, was promoted to third class cadet at Air Force graduation in late May. “But at the end of

the day, that’s exactly why I’m here, to serve.”

Competing for the Falcons’ lacrosse team only heightened the level of commitment in De Bord’s transition to the academy – long training runs in Colorado’s famous altitude were no treat – but lacrosse also accounted for some of De Bord’s most enjoyable moments.

Along with weekly phone conversations with family members, De Bord credited his lacrosse teammates for helping him maintain his sense of resolve.

“I could always count on [my family] to have my back and for my dad to say ‘Suck it up,’ but here being at the academy, the lacrosse team honestly is a close fraternity of guys,” De Bord said. “One of our sayings when we break every huddle is ‘Got your back,’ so guys on the team really care and understand what you’re going through because they’re doing it right alongside you. Some of the best times I’ve had, most of the best times I’ve had, have been with those guys.”

De Bord, a defenseman, played sparingly in his debut season but loved being along for the journey, which ended for the Falcons with an NCAA tournament loss to eventual national champion Duke.

While playing lacrosse has been a longtime passion for De Bord, another athletic pursuit – swimming – took more acclimating. De Bord is interested in a potential career arc in combat rescue.

“It takes a lot of swimming and water confidence,” De Bord said. “That’s something I’ve had to [adjust to]. I wouldn’t say I’ve necessarily dreaded it, but it’s been a different beast in itself ... and by no means am I there yet or where I think I’m supposed to be. The swimming part hasn’t been as natural as running for me, so that’s another aspect of what I’m trying to do that I’ve had to adapt to.”

De Bord’s father, Eric, played college football at Indiana. Nobody in his immediate family took a military path, but De Bord said one of his former lacrosse coaches, Tom Wood of the Fox Valley Lacrosse Club, attended the Naval Academy, and spoke highly of that experience.

“There are some people here that come from military families, their parents both served in the military and they know all the ins and outs of the Air Force and all that, but at the end of the day, everyone kind of ends up in the same place, and everyone here is going through the same stuff,” De Bord said. “I’m in the right place, and I definitely enjoy what I’m doing.”

Gaffney eager to build on core skills FROM THE TEE Kevin Druley Kacie Gaffney offered a disclaimer when discussing her summer golf itinerary.

After listing her tournament schedule, the St. Charles East sophomore mentioned her recent advancement in the statewide Drive, Chip & Putt competition. She added she wasn’t sure if that last part should count.

Why not? Considering the way Gaffney approaches the event, you might even think it went double.

“For me, either way I still get nervous because it’s a nervous game,” Gaffney said. “But I feel like it’s more centered on every single shot instead of just the whole score, so it definitely is more individualized.”

Gaffney placed third in her age bracket at her local qualifier at Cantigny in Wheaton on June 26, earning the final qualifying spot for an Aug. 6 subregional at Cog Hill in Lemont.

Should she advance from that competition, Gaffney would travel to regionals at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, in September with a chance at nationals on the line. Those are held at one of golf’s most hallowed stages – Augusta National in Georgia – on April 5, 2015, the Sunday before The Masters opens.

Leery to get ahead of herself or her datebook, Gaffney tries to keep things light as best she can. She joked that in her case, the competition really was “Putt, Chip & Drive” at Cantigny, considering the order in which she played.

Athletes take three shots per skill and can earn up to 25 points per shot.

Gaffney proved especially effective in the driving competition, finding the Ping i20 driver she received last Christmas improved her accuracy for scoring in the 40-yard wide fairway.

That success boosted her confidence in the finer points the rest of the way.

“Definitely just focusing in on those small areas shows you how important your short game is, definitely,” Gaffney said.

Gaffney tied for fourth with a 15-over par 86 at an IJGA event at Glendale Lakes on Tuesday. If adjusted, that marks a sound improvement from her nine-hole average of 52 as a Saints freshman.

With her father, Kevin, by her side, Gaffney is eager to keep advancing and build from last season’s sectional appearance, where she fired a 95 at Ingersoll in Rockford.

Her round at Glendale Lakes marked the first time she navigated the Glendale Heights course.

“Usually, I’ll study the card with my dad and then basically just try and look at it as much as I can when

I’m on the course, so I know where the hazards are and stuff,” Gaffney said. “So I know semi what I’m doing.”

In the meantime, whether it’s a tournament, Gaffney gets to work on her core skills and earn scores for them.

Drive, chip, putt and exhale.

Nick Capra, White Sox director of player development to go with the dreaded bullpen by committee.

If only the Sox could turn to Triple-A Charlotte for help.

They’re patching the rotation with 29-year-old Scott Carroll, who is 2-2 with a 5.05 ERA and not in much danger of losing his place. It’s pretty clear what the organization’s greatest need is from top to bottom.

“Pitching,” Sox Director of Player Development Nick Capra said. “Industry wide, a lot of people would say the same thing. Starting pitching right now, we’re thin. That’s an area we really need to get better in.”

The rotation was iffy coming out of spring training with rookie Erik Johnson and freeagent Felipe Paulino, coming off two surgeries, filling the 4

and 5 spots as the only righthanders. Johnson is struggling in Triple-A and Paulino is hurt.

General manager Rick Hahn has taken chances on pitchers other teams had waived or not re-signed, including Hector Noesi (the current No. 4 starter), relievers Javy Guerra and Eric Surkamp (in the bullpen), Maikel Cleto and Frank Francisco (no longer in pen), Tommy Hanson and Mitchell Boggs.

When the system is thin on pitching, you have to look elsewhere, and some have worked out.

The Sox used four of their first five picks and 14 of their first 20 on pitchers in the June draft. With the third overall pick, they selected lefthander

Carlos Rodon, the most major league ready pitcher in the draft who, if signed by the July 18 deadline, could help the major league club in some capacity before the season is over.

Rodon will raise the Sox farm system’s rankings, which last year moved up a notch from the bottom of mosts lists.

Thanks in part to last season’s 63-99 record, Hahn is armed with more resources than ever to sign draft picks and international prospects who aren’t in the draft.

Four Latin American teenagers were signed on the first day of the international period Wednesday, including shortstop Amado Nunez and catcher Jhoandro Alfaro for a

reported $900,000 and $750,000, respectively. Both are ranked as top 30 international prospects. The Sox’ bonus pool for this year’s crop is $4.3 million, so more will be spread around on a market that only a few years ago excluded the Sox because of a bonus-skimming scandal.

“We’re trying to get better,” Capra said when asked to assess the Sox’s farm system.

“We’re probably just OK right now. Obviously, time will tell.

The first half of this season we’ve struggled at each level win-wise. But our objective is to develop. We’re already seeing a little progress as the second half gets started.”

Fans might not have patience, but Bryant and Baez do

By STEVE GREENBERG sgreenberg@suntimes.com Cubs fans can whine and fret all they want about the major-league product moving forward at the speed of a frightened turtle. Many of them are doing just that, and who can blame them?

When the front-office plan c a l l s f o r b o t t o m l e s s p atience, it’s the fans who are tested most.

Just about anyone with a pulse for baseball would love to see the call-ups of the Cubs’ glittery prospects begin.

Good or bad, it would make things more interesting around Wrigley Field than they have been in a long time.

So much more interesting.

One might expect the Cubs’ Triple-A golden boys, 22-year-old third baseman Kris Bryant and 21-year-old

shortstop Javier Baez, to share in the fans’ impatience.

What do guys that age know about patience, anyway?

Turns out, a lot.

“I don’t struggle with it at all,” Bryant said. “I go out there every day and try to play the best that I can for the team that I’m on. Right now it’s the Iowa Cubs, and I’m having a blast with the guys so far.”

If you were batting .351 with 28 home runs and 75 RBIs – those power numbers top anyone’s in the minors or the majors, by the way – entering play Thursday, you’d

be having a blast, too. For crying out loud, just imagine some semblance of that production in the middle of the Cubs’ lineup.

“I haven’t thought about it one bit,” Bryant said. “If I’m thinking about that, then it’s taking away from the year I’m having now. My goals are day-to-day goals, things I can achieve on a daily basis, whether it’s taking 50 ground balls at third or having a great [batting-practice] session. I think if you’re putting daily, attainable goals on yourself, getting to the big leagues quicker is kind of a byproduct of that.”

That’s fair. And wise. Also boring, but entertaining Cubs fans isn’t Bryant’s job – yet.

“My job is to make it hard on the people in charge,” he said. “And that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Baez hasn’t made as strong a case this season. Despite his 11 homers and 47 RBIs entering play Thursday, he was hitting .239.

But watch him in just one game, and his talent is beyond obvious. Iowa hitting coach Brian Harper, who was a World Series-winning catcher with the Minnesota Twins, likens Baez to a young Alex Rodriguez. Geez, think a guy like that might warrant a shot at the next level?

“It feels great to be young and be where I’m at right now,” Baez said. “Hopefully, I’ll get to play in the big leagues and stay up there.

But I’m still young, and I know there’s a lot of older guys in Chicago. I’m going to take it easy and day by day, so when the time comes I’m ready.”

So we wait.

Cubs fans might be tired of having smoke blown up their jerseys, but Harper has some more to add. It’s worth a listen.

“Both of them are unbelievably talented kids,” he said. “Any time you use the word ‘patient’ with a Cubs fan, you’re kind of treading on some bad water. But when you’re talking about developing young players, you do have to have some patience – and that’s regardless of what your big-league team is doing.”

As Harper sees it, Bryant is destined to be an All-Star.

Not bad, right? And there’s that A-Rod comparison with Baez for Cubs fans to keep in their back pockets.

Then again, they’ve heard much of this sort of stuff already. Like it or not, they wait.

Adding baseball’s top home run and RBI producer to the middle of the order and a legit leadoff man at the top gave life to the White Sox’s offense that ranked last in most statistical categories in 2013.

Having two-time All-Star Chris Sale, a solid No. 2 in Jose Quintana and an improving John Danks hasn’t prevented the pitching staff from being the Sox’s weaker link, though.

Its 4.34 ERA ranks 27th, the 325 walks lead all of baseball and the WHIP of 1.42 ranks 28th.

The young bullpen, which ranks 18th in the majors with a 3.83 and a majors-worst 142 walks (Oakland A’s relievers, by comparison, have walked 72) is learning on the job because of injuries and ineffectiveness. Since closer Addison Reed was traded during the offseason, no one has grabbed hold of the vacated role, leaving manager Robin Ventura with no choice last week but

How I learned to stop worrying and love Colombia I adopted Colombia’s World Cup team the first time I saw that swiveling little rumba its players do when they score, and how they runrunrunrunrun, and gather in those clammy group embraces. Their 22-year-old star James Rodriguez looks brand-new, like he was just cracked out of a box. There’s not a mark on his complexion, and he chases every ball as if he’s just discovered it, and after a goal he throws his arms out wide, with an utterly brazen invitation to the audience to adore him.

Others may stew over the future of American soccer, with their nagging emphasis on nationality and internal quarrels. I’ve crossed over.

You know you’ve done so when slavish loyalty to the national team is not the only reason to care about the World Cup, and you start to vicariously enjoy the rapture of a country, like Colombia or Costa Rica, that you’ve never even been to. Or when you start clicking on YouTube Adidas commercials of Rodriguez in Spanish, just to watch his feet with your jaw slightly agape, though you don’t understand a word.

And when you feel a feverish anxiety over Friday’s quarterfinal meeting between Colombia and Brazil, because you can’t wait to see Rodriguez against Neymar, the way you can’t wait to see two lions fight over a rib cage.

The Nielsen ratings are in, and they show the game has made a long-awaited encroachment in America’s affections: a U.S. audience of 21.6 million watched the Americans lose to Belgium in overtime in the round of 16, even though it was a weekday afternoon. That’s on par with the NBA Finals, and according to ESPN its ratings are up 44 percent from 2010. “Soccer is breaking through and gets its deserved recognition without taking anything away from the other big American sports,” U.S. national Coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.

That’s wonderful, but with it comes the recognition of how far the United States

VIEWS Sally Jenkins is from having a team on the level of a Colombia or Brazil. It’s one thing to have a team we’re proud of for its gritty performance, but quite another to have a team that the whole world wants to see. Now that we’re watching, we know; we can finally see the difference in quality between them and us. And it has little to do with “tactics,” despite Landon Donovan’s accusation that Klinsmann mismanaged the team. Belgium got off 27 shots on goal to the U.S.’s nine, and goalie Tim Howard had to make 16 saves. There was a nakedly visible deficit in speed and nimbleness of foot.

Until, that is, Klinsmann threw 20-year-old DeAndre Yedlin and 19-year-old Julian Green on to the field as substitutes, when you suddenly sat bolt upright and thought, there it is. The message from Klinsmann a day after the defeat is that in 2015, he’s going young. And it’s the right thing to do, after watching the breakout performance of Rodriguez.

“The talent gap is difficult to discuss,” Klinsmann said.

“We’re trying at every level and every corner of the country and outside the country to develop more players for our team. . .”

If the question is, how can the United States find a Rodriguez, the answer seems to be, look in every small town for a poor kid bouncing a ball off his foot. In the meantime, I’m perfectly happy migrating my loyalty to Colombia.

It will be interesting to see if Americans need a great American team in order to sustain their World Cup interest, and what kind of ratings ESPN gets on the epic showdown between Brazil and Colombia.

See, there is the progress of American soccer, and then there is the progress of soccer in America, and they are two quite different things.

It’s the latter that will benefit

from the forehead-smacking star quality of Rodriguez, because it’s impossible to watch him without wanting to follow him beyond the tournament – and wishing more Americans would learn to play like him.

He patters around the field so soft and light of foot he might be wearing house slippers, and never seems to get tired in the infernal Brazilian heat.

He makes defenders look like clumsy stompers, while he does parlor tricks with the ball on his toes.

He’s not just the tournament’s leading goal scorer with five, he’s also got two assists, which means he’s accounted for seven of his team’s 11 goals, and if you haven’t seen a replay of his score against Uruguay, you need to. With his back to the goal, he received a pass

with his chest, bumped it to himself, and then before it reached the ground, lashed a superhero-style sidekick and left-footed an explosive volley that ducked just under the crossbar.

Rodriguez has not quite come out of the blue; he won league titles in Argentina and Portugal, and was signed

by Monaco last year to a contract worth about $65 million. But no one would have predicted him as a candidate for the Golden Boot. His World Cup explosion seems to be a matter of maturity meeting gnawing ambition and financial necessity. He’s from a corner of Colombia called Cucuta, near the Venezuelan border, and he once told a Colombian radio interviewer that he spent most of his young life away from home. He moved to Buenos Aires at 15 to play pro soccer,

and described being so poor he could only afford to spend one minute on the phone with his family.

His performance will propel him to unimaginable riches; rumors are there will be a bidding war for him next season. In addition to his talent, he has beauty and an unsolemn, laughing disposition going for him.

He is married to the sister of Colombia’s goalie David Ospina, and they have a heart-melting baby daughter, Salome, whose name is tattooed on his forearm. He kisses it after every goal.

“It’s difficult to score these goals, but I think when you dream seriously, when you dream, about doing this type of thing, then you can do it,” he told FIFA.com.

Wherever he goes, he will have an international following.

And after missing a potential game-winning penalty kick on April 5, forward Mike Magee was taunted on Twitter by somebody who called him another slur against homosexuals. Magee responded by posting a photo of himself that showed LOVE IS LOUDER written on his right palm.

Jeff Marinacci, chairman of the Section 8 Chicago Independent Supporters Association, said when he heard the chant Wednesday night he found it “unacceptable.”

He said his group constantly

monitors fans in the Harlem End and tries to educate supporters.

The Fire and supporters also share a charter that’s a mutual commitment to each other, but also to anybody who attends a match, and part of that outlines what kind of language and behavior is and isn’t acceptable.

But as he knows, there’s still work to be done.

“We’re an open community for all Fire fans and all lovers of the beautiful game,” Marinacci said. “Part of that is we don’t tolerate racist, sexist, homophobic and other kinds of derogatory language and gestures.”

Usage of the slur in the same context has been prom-

inent during the World Cup when Mexican fans were under scrutiny for its use, though FIFA didn’t hand down any sanctions. The chant was also audible when El Tri visited Soldier Field on June 3 to face Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Monica Trasandes, GLAAD’s Director of Spanish Language Media, said using the term is “very hurtful,” even if the chant isn’t meant to be a slur.

“It’s an ongoing discussion and conversation with people, with fans,” Trasandes said. “We just really truly want fans to know. I think if they knew what they were saying, how hurtful it was, they would stop saying it.”

When Toronto FC’s Joe Bendik took goal kicks during their 1-1 draw Wednesday night with the Fire at Toyota Park there was an unfortunate cheer coming from some in the crowd.

Some in attendance chanted a Spanish slur against homosexuals toward the goalie just as he kicked in hopes of disturbing his delivery.

The sound was easily audible during Wednesday’s game, and there were also comments about it on social media.

On Thursday, the Fire released a statement to the SunTimes condemning the usage

of the cheer at Toyota Park or anywhere else.

“Spirited chants and visual displays of support are an important part of the soccer experience, but there is no place for offensive references to sexual orientation, ethnicity or insults of any kind,” the team said.

“The Chicago Fire Soccer Club will continue to work with our supporters’ association to promote sportsmanship and respect for all players, coaches and fellow fans.”

The Fire and their fans have lived up to that.

Fourth of July a time to celebrate, remember Perhaps it was all of the “USA!” chatter, the television ads that combine mattress ads with patriotic symbols or the front of her grandpa’s house covered with red, white and blue flags that prompted young Olivia to ask about the Fourth of July.

Delighted to be asked about my favorite observance, I gathered her twin sister, Leia, and began a chat about the revolution, the Boston Tea Party, Thomas Jefferson, Paul Revere, Betsy Ross and the Liberty Bell.

I think I lost their interest sometime after the redcoats and Washington crossing the Delaware, so I shifted the narrative to Fourth of July memories from my early days.

Twenty-five years of service TriCity Family Services celebrates anniversary of Wilderness Challenge Program KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Twenty-five years ago, Jim Otepka and Greg Watson created the Wilderness Challenge Program, an eight-day canoeing and camping experience.

Otepka, executive director of TriCity Family Services, and Watson, TriCity Family Services’ senior clinician/consultant, created the program to help at-risk teens gain skills, such as self-confidence, courage and perseverance, states a news release.

Otepka and Watson, marked their 25th year by leading a group of 25 teens through the Boundary Waters of Minnesota.

TriCity Family Services congratulates the participants of the 25th annual Wilderness Challenge Program for their determination, ambition and teamwork on the trail, states a release.

The team departed for its adventure June 13 and returned June 20.

On their journey, the group had to face several days of rain, mosquitoes and other challenges posed by Mother Nature, the release states.

The trip was led by agency staff and adult volunteers from the community.

To date, more than 490 teens have experienced the Wilderness Challenge Program led by TriCity Family Services, the release states.

When it comes to luxury sedans, little gems make the price tag easier to take.

On the $45,000 all-wheel-drive, four-door, five-passenger S model of the midsize Infiniti Q50, those gems included locked front doors that unlock with a touch of a finger (remote ignition fob must be close by), front door handles that light up in darkness (remote key fob does the trick), aluminum kick plates, solid magnesium paddle shifters and voice recognition for Bluetooth (hands-free telephone), audio and vehicle information.

It goes without saying that the vehicle will have a wide assortment of power and comfort features, and the Q50 does. Differences between a twowheel-drive $37,150 Q50 and a tested $45,000 all-wheel-drive Q50S are slight and, besides the driving wheels, include tougher brakes, upgrade leather seats (heated, cooled and power in front), 19- instead of 17-inch alloy aluminum wheels, aluminum brake and gas pedals, 14 speakers instead of six for the sound system, plus the paddle shifters.

The seven-speed automatic transmission is standard, but the paddle shifters allow drivers to get the feel of a manual and this is important in an S or sport model. Utilized properly, this transmission mated to a 3.7-liter, 328-horsepower, V6 engine can get this 3,489-pound Q50 from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds (media and factory tested). Braking (ventilated discs, 12.6-inch front, 12.1-inch rear) from 60 mph to 0 can cover a distance of 122 to 125 feet, an average feat for a sedan of this size.

Fuel usage averaged 23 miles per gallon during the test week on mostly highway driving with two adults and minimal luggage aboard. Premium fuel is recommended for the 20-gallon tank. Infiniti also offers a $44,000 to $48,000 360-horsepower hybrid Q50, which might get 36 mpg on the highway, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA, by the way, rates the gasoline-powered Q50S at 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined.

Merits of the tested Q50S are in performance and comfort. The engine accelerated quietly and quickly in passing situations. The independent front and rear suspension system worked wonders keeping the vehicle balanced during some sharp cornering and emergency stopping (a car pulled out slowly from a driveway

long trips, but this is true of competitors in this midsize luxury sedan market.

The 13.5 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk is average for a midsize car.

Besides the heated front seats (manual thigh extension), power included heated exterior mirrors, door locks, windows (four express), and a sliding tinted glass moonroof with one-touch automatic open and close.

LED fog lights and turning lamps are mounted in the lower front fascia. In the rear are LED brake lights and a high center-mounted stop light.

Features on the base, Premium and Sport trim levels include rearview monitor, an intelligent key that stores climate, audio and driving preferences, Bose sound system with two USB ports for iPod or other compatible

devices, auto-dimming inside mirror, satellite radio and voice recognition for Bluetooth and vehicle information.

Safety basics are a four-wheel antilock braking system, brake assist, traction and stability controls, airbags in front, sides and overhead, and seat belts for five positions with pretensioners and load limiters in front. A pressure monitoring system tells the driver which tire on the car could use more air.

Warranty coverage is four years or 60,000 miles, six years or 70,000 miles on the powertrain and 24-hour roadside assistance. A complimentary car is provided during service visits to a dealership.

The Q50 is new and was viewed by many in the automotive press as a replacement for the G37, but that vehicle continues to be assembled and sold in the United States by Infiniti.

They created the six-episode TV series “Zombie Roadkill” a few years back, and they’re obviously fans of at least three specific films: Spielberg’s overly praised “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” the 1981 version of “Clash of the Titans” and the more recent, unfairly underrated “Chronicle.”

“E.T.” was about a kid’s relationship with a stranded alien creature trying to go home; “Chronicle” used the shakycam, found-footage genre to celebrate youth and camaraderie and adventure; “Clash of the Titans?” Let’s just say that one of the few mistakes Gayden and Green made in “Earth to Echo” was to fashion their stranded alien who meets up with three kids on an adventure in the shape of a little owl – a little robotic owl that looks exactly like the stupid robotic owl that was in “Titans.” Maybe if they made it a grouse ... .

The thing the filmmakers did really well was make a movie they probably wanted to see when they were kids.

“Earth to Echo” is an offbeat, funny, slightly edgy science fiction offering that features unknown young actors playing 13-year-old kids who are making their

own movie. Perhaps it would be better to call it their own record of an adventure they set out on over the long last night that they’ll spend together as pals.

Set in a residential community in Nevada that’s about to be torn down because a freeway is coming through, thereby displacing (more like peacefully evicting) all of the families, the story has our three heroes – Alex, Tuck, and Munch – on the evening before they’re to move off in different directions and new lives, trying to figure out why their cellphones have gone haywire, why images of “maps” have appeared on their screens.

A bike ride out to the desert has them discover a mysterious metal cylinder, the communicative owl-like thing within it, their understanding that they must help it (they name it Echo) find its lost spaceship, and finally that adventure that sends them, via regularly changing maps, to break into a private home, to a pawn shop, a biker bar, all kinds of places kids shouldn’t be.

The cool gimmick is that Tuck has decided to record it all, installing constantly running video cameras everywhere from the handlebars on his bike to the frames of his glasses. That gimmick allows viewers to be one with the characters, and the filmmakers have lucked out by finding three newcomers who are so natural and relaxed as actors – everything they do,

every word they say, feels real rather than scripted.

The only other misfire, after the owl, is the inclusion of a female character named Emma, whose presence, while adding to a couple of plot twists, breaks up the male bonding thing that makes the film so endearing. There are other characters: brief glimpses of parents who are too tied up in their own lives to pay attention to their kids, orange-jacketed “construction workers” who keep showing up at inopportune times.

They help to make the story work; I have no idea why Emma is there.

Fortunately nothing gets too much in the way of keeping things focused on the boys knowing this is their last adventure together, and that, when morning comes, they’re going to lose their special friendship.

The humor of the film, along with its moments of absolute wonder (done on a remarkably good-looking shoestring budget), keep the inevitable ending from being too bittersweet. In fact, its end notes ring perfectly. It’s certainly a film I wish I saw when I was a kid.

• “Earth to Echo” is written by Henry Gayden and directed by Dave Green. The film stars Teo Halm, Reese Hartwig, and Astro and Ella Wahlestedt. It is rated PG.

Should I switch to diet soda?

Dear Reader: Sugary soda drinks have no place in a healthy diet.

Excess sugar leads to weight gain – and obesity increases the risk of many serious health conditions, including heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. As I always say when giving dietary advice, I’m talking about a regular practice, not an occasional sin.

Multiple studies have shown that people who drink the largest amounts of soda are more likely to gain weight than people who drink the smallest amounts. That’s not surprising when you consider that a 20-ounce bottle of soda can contain as many as 20 teaspoons – that’s 333 calories – of sugar.

Diet soda is made from artificial sweeteners that contain few or no calories. It may seem like the perfect alternative to regular soda, but researchers are finding that people who drink diet soda still have a higher risk for weight gain, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease than people who don’t drink diet soda.

There is some evidence that artificial sweeteners may affect the

• Unsweetened iced or hot tea.

• Diluted juice: Mix 2 to 3 ounces of 100 percent juice with an equal amount of water. You’ll get half the sugar and calories.

• Low-fat milk: Low-fat milk has half as much sugar as soda and lots of nutrients.

• Coffee: If you add sugar to

coffee, try going “cold turkey.”

You can acquire a taste for unsweetened coffee. I know, since I did. If you can’t get rid of sugar entirely, try smaller amounts of either sugar or sweeteners.

• Unflavored seltzer/sparkling water: These are great when you need some fizz.

I retained my college-age weight for about 20 years after graduating. But then, like many people, I started to gain weight.

Since I was a kid, also like many people, I loved to drink sugary sodas. I switched to diet sodas, and it helped a little in my goal of remaining at a healthy weight.

Then I realized that what I liked most about sodas was the carbonation. The “bite” of the fizz hitting the back of the throat was great, particularly when I was thirsty. Carbonated waters (flavored or unflavored, but without sugar or sweetener) served the purpose just as well.

I was lucky not to be sick this year, and I’d like to also stay healthy next year. So, I’d like to know: When washing your hands, how often is often? According to this highly regarded health clinic and hospital, a little soap and water can – many times – prevent what may take loads of time and money to cure.

Thorough hand washing isn’t simple.

You must apply soap or detergent to your hands and rub vigorously for at least 10 seconds to suspend the microorganisms (germs). Then rinse them away.

Water temperature isn’t essential. Water warm enough (About 110 Fahrenheit) to cut through grease is best.

Water hot enough to kill germs would harm your hands.

Germs tend to accumulate around your cuticles, beneath your fingernails and in the creases of your hands, so concentrate on these areas. Rinse all soap from your hands to remove as many microorganisms

It’s virtually impossible to keep your hands germ free, but there are times when it’s critical to wash your hands.

• After playing with a pet.

• After handling garbage.

Germs accumulate on your hands as you perform daily activities. By not washing your hands you can acquire or pass on a host of ailments, from the common cold to more serious diseases such as dysentery (an intestinal infection) or hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). Most cases of diarrhea and vomiting are caused by inadequate hand washing.

Overall, infections claim more lives than any other disease except heart disease and cancer.

You are a very wise young woman to be a neat freak concerning your health. Your question has given me the pleasure of reminding our readers to take the time and spend a few cents to avoid serious illnesses – wash your hands.

Sometimes the opening lead shows the path to the defeat of the contract ... if one of the defenders finds the right subsequent play.

First, though, look only at the West hand. What should he lead against three no-trump?

Some players open two notrump with 19 high-card points, especially when they have a good five-card suit. It can be reasonable, but not with that North hand. Almost half of the points are in quacks (queens and jacks), which is not good, and there is one unstopped suit. One diamond is correct.

Length rules against notrump, so West should lead a heart. And because he has no honor in the suit, he should choose the nine – top of nothing when the top two cards are touching. (When you have something like 9-7-6-4-3, lead the seven, the second-highest.)

South has seven top tricks: three hearts and four clubs. He will take the first trick with dummy’s queen and play on diamonds. What should East do?

The opening lead marks South with the heart ace and king. So he cannot also have the spade ace, because then he would have been too strong to respond one no-trump. East should grab the trick and shift to his spade four, the low card guaranteeing at least one honor in the suit. West will win with his ace and return the spade eight, the higher card from a remaining doubleton.

East will take three more spade tricks for down one.
