New North Aurora restaurant opens its doors Vietnam Gate serves Chinese, Vietnamese cuisine

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – A new restaurant that serves Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine recently opened at 321 S. Lincolnway, North Aurora.

Vietnam Gate opened last week. For the past several years, property owner Thanh Ngo has been working on converting the house on the property into a restaurant.

In 2011, village trustees approved a $20,000 tax increment financing facade grant for the project. Trustees ear-

lier this year approved the reimbursement. North Aurora Economic and Community Development Director Mike Toth had attributed the lag in the completion of the project to the fact that it is self-funded.

Toth ate lunch at the restaurant Wednesday.

“It was very good,” he said.

“Everything was very fresh. It is nice to have some different options for lunch. For me, it seems like a healthy offering.

It’s a nice alternative to your classic burger and pizza offering.”

Vietnam Gate is not the only restaurant to open recently in the village. Bulldog Ale House recently opened at 459 S. Randall Road in the former Golden Egg Pancake House building.

North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco said he also was happy to see Vietnam Gate open its doors.

“They put a lot of time and money and effort into that place,” Bosco said. “From all accounts, it’s very well done.”

‘Grateful’: Family of once-missing teen makes donation

The 14-year-old girl was found, safe and sound, at a friend’s house in St. Charles on Tuesday morning.

The Campton Hills resEmily ident had Czajkowski been missing since the evening of July 22, prompting a days-long search.

Jason Czajkowski said his family has “a long list of people to thank” after many rallied to help find his missing daughter.

“It’s a whole community,” he said.

The search included efforts by several law enforcement agencies, as well as members of the public, who distributed fliers donated by businesses.

Businesses to stay open during Houston Street construction project in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Starting next week, motorists will encounter a new challenge while they are getting around in downtown Batavia.

Work on a $2.7 million project to reconstruct Houston Street will begin next week.

Houston Street will be closed starting Monday, and it is not expected to reopen until late October or early November.

During the construction work, businesses along Houston Street will be open. All access will remain open at Water Street to allow vehicles to cross Houston Street going north and south only. That includes access to the Depot Museum at 155 Houston St. The museum is run by the Batavia Park District and the Batavia Historical Society.

“There will be a connection between North Water Street and the bike path,” said Jim Eby, capital projects manager for the Batavia Park District.

“They are going to put in a connector of some kind, probably asphalt, to make that an easier access. They are committed to making sure we have good access, both for our volunteer staff, as well as the public that wants to come look at the museum.”

Eby met Thursday with those involved with the project. He said city officials have been working closely with the park district on the project.

Island Avenue traffic also will be able to cross Houston Street, but there could be temporary delays. Access will remain open to the Batavia Government Center at 100 N. Island Ave., as well as the Batavia Riverwalk and the Riverain Point Apartments complex at 200 N. Island Ave.

The project will include wider sidewalks, with areas of paver bricks, new ornamental lighting, planting beds, trees and new storm sewers. The

water main within the project area was replaced in 2014 in preparation for the streetscape project.

Bump-outs also will be installed where Houston Street intersects with Water Street and Island Avenue to narrow the roadway width to provide shorter pedestrian crossings.

The project is designed to revitalize the downtown and make it more pedestrian-friendly.

The city also has made streetscape improvements to Wilson and River streets in

recent years. Eby said the improvements to Houston Street will be a good complement to the nearby Batavia Riverwalk, which was dedicated in 1998.

“This is going to be a big improvement to that street, and certainly for the Batavia Riverwalk itself,” Eby said.

“It’s going to look nice and fresh again.”

City officials are hoping for good weather in the next few months to ensure the project will be done on time.

“Our target date is the first part of November,” Batavia street superintendent Scott Haines said. “At that point, we are hoping to be substantially completed. It all depends on the weather. Throughout their life journey, Curtis and Christi made lifelong friendships. Not just friendships that meant an occasional Christmas card, but true loving, caring friends. People were drawn to be friends with Curtis, which in turn lead to many of his friends becoming close. Being a friend of Curtis meant that it was good enough to be friends with anyone in his life. If life was a game measured by the quality and quantity of friends that you have, Curtis won.

Curtis held nothing back, and yet had no enemies. He never talked down to anyone and had a unique ability to relate, communicate and care about everyone. If you were one of the lucky ones who had the chance to meet him, you came away a better person. He brought out the best in the people he associated with. Words truly fall short of

describing the impact to the lives of those whom had the true pleasure of crossing paths with Curtis.

Curtis loved the outdoors and being with friends. He loved sports, especially watching a college game involving the University of Illinois, Penn State or Iowa State (Alma matter schools of his children). The St. Louis Cardinals were a true love of his that will always have a special place in his heart. He enjoyed golf, whether it was watching on television on a Sunday afternoon or playing with his wife, children or buddies.

Curtis’ passing leaves a lot of people he touched in his 56 years feeling empty. But, to feel empty you had to be full at some point.

The emptiness we feel for the passing of our son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend is because we were blessed and full of love for this genuine, loving caring man. Share your stories with each other and know he would not want us to grieve, but to continue to live our lives. We should follow the example he set and hope to even come close to being as good of a man and person as Curtis Mabry - or as many knew him as - Mabe.

A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on August 7, 2015 at 5:30pm.

County coroner to review old cases GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell is encouraging people to contact him if they have concerns about how a case was handled by a previous administration.

He wants to know if they believe something was left out or a piece of information was not reviewed so inaccuracies can be addressed, he said.

He said he will review cases for compliance with updated scientific and forensic standards.

Because the coroner’s office handles thousands of cases a year, Russell said not every case will be reviewed. He will prioritize cases brought forward by the public, he said.

“I can’t promise anybody anything,” Russell said.

“If nothing comes in, great.

That means there’s no concerns.”

In a news release, Russell indicated the cold case review initiative was sparked by a request from Elgin physician Bob Tiballi about a case Tiballi believed was inaccurately ruled as an undetermined death.

“After reviewing it, I figured there may be others,” Russell said.

Tiballi, who ran against Russell in the Republican primary for coroner in 2012, said he took “significant umbrage”

to Russell naming him in the release because of the nature of the case.

Additionally, Tiballi said, he doesn’t have a problem with the coroner reviewing old cases, but he doesn’t like the possible implication that he is endorsing Russell.

“Which I’m not,” Tiballi said.

Russell said he wanted to give Tiballi the recognition for bringing the case forward.

He wasn’t under the impression it was confidential, he said.

“This is a public case,” Russell said. “This is not a private thing.”

Russell said he can devote time to this initiative because he has taken care of his first priority when he took office, which was to “plug the holes in the bucket.”

It won’t affect his budget because he will do the preliminary reviews himself and will incorporate them into his daily schedule, Russell said.

The Kane County Board has been closely monitoring the coroner’s spending. This week, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick said the coroner’s office is projected to be $32,000 over budget based on current spending. His report noted the auditor’s office has been notified of the projected overage and may withhold payment of invoices as deemed appropriate.

North Aurora Days festival coming up

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – With cases of canine flu waning, the North Aurora Pet Parade once again will be part of next month’s North Aurora Days.

The 33rd annual North Aurora Pet Parade will be Aug. 9, the last day of North Aurora Days. The lineup for the parade will start at 1 p.m. at the former site of the North Aurora Activity Center at the corner of Lincolnway and State Street. At 2 p.m., participants will parade across the State Street bridge to North Island Park.

Parade organizers felt safe to go ahead with the parade in light of the decrease in canine flu cases.

“We haven’t seen cases believed to be canine influenza for six weeks or more,” said Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic owner Thomas Brooks, who started the parade.

Judging will be limited to the first 100 entrants.

Man gets DUI while wearing alcohol monitoring bracelet

SUGAR GROVE – A Sugar Grove man ordered to wear an electronic home monitoring device for a drunken driving conviction was charged this month with another DUI, according to police and court records.

Jacob P. Smith, 35, of the 200 block of Oxford Avenue, pleaded guilty in June to a driving under the influence charge from March 15 in Geneva, Kane County court records show.

He was placed in the Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring program – or SCRAM – as part of his sentence, according to court records. Records indicated he was ordered not to consume any alcohol while in the program.

Smith was ordered to return to court on July 13 with proof he got the SCRAM bracelet, records show.

He, however, showed his compliance to wear the device five days early, when he was pulled over in Sugar Grove.

A Sugar Grove police officer stopped Smith shortly before 1 a.m. July 8 after Smith passed the fully marked patrol vehicle on Route 47 near the village’s southern boundary, according to a police report.

The officer estimated that Smith, who was driving a 2011 red Dodge pickup truck, was going in excess of 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, police reported.

Police reported Smith was swaying and stumbling, had difficulty keeping his eyes open, smelled of alcohol and didn’t remember passing the patrol car because he was looking for his driver’s license.

According to the report, Smith said he was wearing an alcohol monitoring bracelet and showed it to the officer. He was taken into custody at 1:02 a.m. after failing field sobriety tests, police

reported.

The report indicated prescription medications were found in Smith’s vehicle, and the labels indicated the drugs might impair the ability to drive, and alcohol might intensify such effects as drowsiness and dizziness.

Smith was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.08 percent, reckless driving, speeding, improper overtaking on the right, driving without

BATAVIA – Nelson Lake Road will be closed to traffic at Main Street Road near Batavia beginning Thursday for intersection improvements, according to the Kane County Division of Transportation. Construction hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through the end of October, weather permitting. The improvements will include pavement widening, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction along Main Street and Nelson Lake roads; ditch and embankment grading; and removal and replacement of storm sewer. A detour route will be posted using Bliss, Healey and Tanner roads. Only local traffic will be permitted within the road

The danger of garage door initiatives We’re backing out of the garage when, as the door whirs down, my wife, Tia, says, “That really looks terrible!”

This is – I’m approximating, but it’s close – the 1,762nd time she’s said that. To me. Who knows how many times she’s told our children, neighbors or even strangers strolling by.

I imagine her telling people out walking their snowball bichon or T-Rex Cane Corso, “My husband tried to wash bird poop off our garage door!” She points to what to her looks like a Jackson Pollack, then pats the dogs after they finish using our lawn for a rest stop.

OK, I’ll admit a slight discoloration. In my defense, the endeavor sprang from the dreaded honey-do list, a wife’s ICBM whose appearance on the fridge door acts as a husband’s DEW Line alert, warning him to take action beyond watching cable baseball, football, basketball, hockey, tennis, golf, curling, cricket, pingpong or, occasionally, mowing the lawn once the grass reaches knee level.

One day, it dawned on me that before the list was posted or verbalized, I could take the initiative!

Pulling into the driveway, I noticed unsightly bird droppings staining the garage door. Eagerly filling a bucket with dish detergent suds, I threw in the sink’s sponge, its harsh, steely side promising speedy removal.

Five minutes later, the poop was gone from the door, along with its single color. Slightly darker splotches appeared where I’d washed, but anyone glancing at the door, not analyzing it like a crime scene, might think them shadows.

Arriving home, Tia, an art teacher whose profession is studying surfaces, exclaimed, “What happened to it?”

Seeing her so excited, I beamed.

“A little soap, water and determination happened to it,” I smiled, coming over for a kiss.

Any guy reading this must be thinking: “Duh, Rick! Never do anything on your own! Take the initiative and you’ll buy more trouble than spilling beer and chips on the couch while watching Texas Hold ’em tournaments.”

A week later, in a somewhat related scenario, my brother-in-law, Patrick, joined me in the doghouse.

His wife, leaving for work, left instructions and ingredients on the kitchen counter for making flatbread. Returning home, she noticed the instructions and ingredients exactly where she’d left them.

When interrogated, Patrick explained, “I thought your instructions were for you!”

I contend this was an absolutely reasonable rejoinder, as no lowly sous-chef would prepare food without explicit verbal orders from the head chef.

Since the garage door debacle, I’ve made amends. One day, sweating under a blistering hot sun, Tia was weeding our front yard landscaping. Seeing her from inside the air-conditioned house, I took the initiative to bring her a big glass of ice water, for which she was eternally grateful.

What more could a husband do without being told?

The travesty of Cecil the lion

By JO-ANN ARMAO The Washington Post The wrath of the Internet has descended upon Walter Palmer, the Minneapolis-area dentist who has acknowledged killing Cecil, a star lion of Zimbabwe’s national park system.

So fierce were the attacks that Palmer’s dental office abruptly shut its doors and its Facebook page was made unavailable. Palmer’s whereabouts were unknown and it has been reported he has hired a public relations firm. (Good luck with that.)

Given the account of Zimbabwe conservation officials – that Cecil was illegally lured from his sanctuary, shot with an arrow and then tracked for 40 hours before being shot, skinned and decapitated – the outrage is understandable.

That’s not to suggest in any way that any harm should come to Palmer; only that it’s fitting that this bigtime hunter might now know a little of what it is like to be on the other end of things.

In a statement released to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Palmer expressed regret, insisting he believed

his actions to be legal. “I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt.

I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt,” the statement read. “I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion.”

It will be up to the authorities to sort out the truth, but one has to wonder what Palmer did when the study collar on the lion was detected.

Apparently it didn’t interfere with the trophy being taken. Nor did it prompt anyone to notify the authorities.

Those of us who are not hunters will never be able to understand the attraction of killing something as beautiful as this animal – and paying $50,000 to do so.

One can hope, though, that this travesty will cause trophy hunters to do some soul-searching about their sport. And the rest of us need to ask ourselves the hard question of whether we would have cared about this lion if he didn’t have a name.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

EXCITEMENT BUILDS DURING TIME OFF FOR LOCAL TEAMS

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com There’s no arguing that football provides one of the most grueling summer schedules of any high school sport.

But as summer camps come to an end this week, all teams are required by the IHSA to have 10 noncontact days before Monday, Aug 10, the first day of fall practices.

As written in IHSA Bylaw 3.153, “Persons who coach a sport at a member school may have a maximum of 25 days of contact in that sport with students from that school during the period between the last day of classes or Monday of Week 49 in the IHSA Standardized Calendar (which date is earlier).”

A day of contact is defined as “any date on which coaching or instruction in the skills and techniques of any sport takes place.”

So how do Kane County Chronicle-area football players spend those days? What do coaches expect from their players during that span?

It really depends on which school you go to and the place you feel you’re at with just over a week until the official season begins.

“There’s no doubt you have to continue to work out, at least in my eyes,” Batavia senior linebacker Colin Thurston said. “You don’t want to lose everything you put in with hard work all summer.

“It’s definitely nice to have a break,” St. Charles North defensive back Jake Spaniol said. “But if it was up to us, we probably would be back (this) Monday. We want to be around each other, so it’s important to take a break, but I think it also makes us that much more amped and excited to get back out there.”

Spaniol is one of North’s many key contributors returning from last season’s team that saw it’s season end

to eventual state-runner up Cary-Grove in the Class 7A playoffs.

The summer brings a schedule that is not only mentally exhausting, but takes a toll physically on the players.

The break is something that is not only required, but probably necessary. But what the break does, for players who have been around football just about every day for two months, is fuel an even bigger excitement to get practices underway.

“There’s still some learning for us to do, but there’s

no doubt there’s excitement,” St. Charles East’s Cam Canales said. “You’re not out here all summer working hard if you’re not excited to get this going.

The break is nice to have some time to yourself every once in a while, but it definitely builds excitement for the season.”

Canales is expected get most of the carries in the Saints’ backfield this year, and coach Bryce Farquhar expects Canales to be a leader of a young team that both expect an early learning curve

to take place.

Batavia and coach Dennis Piron have upped the excitement for players every time they walk into the weight room. A sign reading “30 days” continued to be updated Wednesday, showing the number of days until the Bulldogs open their season against Oswego.

Piron said the break is well-deserved, not just for his team, but any football team putting in the work in the heat and humidity.

Johnson takes command, shoots 2-under

By RUSSELL HODGES editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – After almost six hours of IJGA sectional competition at Phillips Park Golf Course, Aurora Christian’s Devin Johnson was the only player in the senior boys division to be under par after 18 holes.

The Geneva resident Johnson, who advanced to the second round of match play at the 35th Chick Evans Junior Amateur in Itasca last week, finished with a 2-under 69. He said afterward that he’s playing at the top of his game.

“I played the best I’ve played in awhile,” Johnson said.

Johnson admitted his putting cost him a couple strokes, but said he was satisfied with his play in the end.

“I could’ve made a few more putts than I made, but I can’t complain,” Johnson said. “I left a lot of putts out there that lipped out. But overall, I’m happy with the end result.”

Another Kane County Chronicle-area golfer with a solid performance on Thursday was Burlington Central’s Joe Sherman. Sherman, who lives in St. Charles, finished tied for seventh place in the senior boys division with a 5-over 76.

“I played all right overall today,” Sherman said. “Certainly had a shank and some topped shots that I wish I could get back, but that’s okay. My drives were solid, so I didn’t have to worry about trees and the greens were a great speed and consistency.”

A key factor dictating play was the numerous trees lining the fairways. Johnson said it was important to strike the ball well off the tee in order to avoid a difficult second shot.

“You have to give yourself good position as much as you can to avoid those,” Johnson said.

Batavia’s Nicholas Robinson, who finished tied for ninth place in the senior boys

division with a 6-over 77, said he agreed with Johnson. Robinson also said he was forced to use a punch shot, a low-flying shot meant to steer clear of trees and other obstacles, to get himself out of trouble.

“I had a couple of shots today that I had to use the punch shot to try and get up and down,” Robinson said.

“You definitely want to keep the ball on the fairway.”

“Trees were a huge part of play today because of the somewhat tight fairways,” St. Charles North’s Liam Smith said. “If you’re off to the right or left, it creates problems.”

St. Charles East’s Kacie Gaffney (13-over 85) and Batavia’s Lauren Anderson (20-ove 92) took third and fifth, respectively, in senior girls division play. while St. Charles residents Nicole Jordan (11-over 83) and Emma Hardy (110) competed in the junior girls division.

Fleck building tradition at WMU

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DETROIT – During his playing days at Northern Illinois, PJ Fleck racked up the thirdmost receptions and fifth-most receiving yards during his four-year stint with the Huskies.

However, when he talks about being recently named one of the 50 greatest Northern Illinois football players by the school, Fleck – now the head coach for Western Michigan – does so almost self-deprecatingly.

“I don’t know if I really am one of the 50 greatest players, there’s a lot of way better players than PJ Fleck. What made me good was Michael Turner,” Fleck said of Turner, who is the Huskies’ all-time leader in all-purpose yards. “That’s who made me even known. It really should just be Michael Turner twice.”

“It’s nice to know he’s been there before and done what we’re doing and knows what it’s like playing in the Mid-American Conference. He demands that respect because he’s earned it.”

Zach Terrell Western Michigan quarterback While the Kaneland alumnus brushes aside the accolades, Fleck did collect 179 catches – including a then-record 14 against Ohio in 2003 – and 2,162 receiving yards during the 1999-2001 and 2003 seasons. For the players on his Western Michigan team, it gives their coach some credibility.

“That’s pretty cool to have a coach who was a really, really good football player in college,” Broncos quarterback Zach Terrell said. “It’s nice to know he’s been there before and done

what we’re doing and knows what it’s like playing in the Mid-American Conference. He demands that respect because he’s earned it.”

In his two full years as the head coach of the Broncos, Fleck has already proven to be one of the top young coaches in college football. He earned the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year award in 2014 after guiding them to an 8-6 season – a 7-win improvement from 2013, which is a MAC record. It also earned Fleck, 34, a six-year contract with an an-

nual base of $800,000 a season – by far the largest in the conference.

However, his stint at Western Michigan didn’t start with a bang – going just 1-11 in his first season with the Broncos.

For Fleck’s quarterback, the offseason after that one-win season was a chance to find themselves.

“I think we just had a make a decision that offseason – either we can complete buy in and trust the process or we can fight it and continue to lose and continue to stink,” Terrell said. One of Fleck’s peers, Toledo head coach Matt Campbell, said it was impressive that Fleck was able to continue to get his players to buy in to what he was teaching despite the one-win season in his debut.

“I think it’s one of those situations, when you build, you have a good vision and stick to what you are,” Campbell said.

“It’s when you deviate away

from who you are is when you get in trouble.”

With Fleck coming into his third season with a lot of momentum – returning 22 starters, including nine on offense and eight on defense and Offensive Player of the Year Jarvion Franklin – there is still something he hasn’t accomplished.

The Broncos still haven’t beaten his alma mater under his watch. Fleck joked about how coming into Huskie Stadium now on the visitor sidelines has given him a different gameday experience in DeKalb.

“When things get thrown at you and hear things that used to be positive are really negative now, that’s maybe that’s the biggest difference but that’s part of the sport – that’s part of the gameday atmosphere,” said Fleck, who was an assistant coach for the Huskies from 2007-09. “I wouldn’t expect anything less because I am the opponent.”

Contrary to a version of the club’s media notes earlier this week, he won’t get the call again in the first two games of this weekend’s series against Cedar Rapids.

Yes, correcting a typo can save a pitching staff, but the surer bet is the Cougars’ own cautious maneuvering, which includes diligently monitoring innings as the season reaches its stretch run.

“We definitely have the red flag up and are shutting guys down a little sooner than normal or than what you think,” manager Mark Grudzielanek said.

“It’s OK. We’re making sure that we keep these kids right and healthy. We have slowed down a few of the kids and we may do another one, so we’ll see.”After working 24 innings in four June starts, 21-year-old Taiwanese righty Wei-Chieh Huang, who was part of this month’s All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati, has logged just 19 innings in five July appearances.

Righty Brad Keller, 20, recently eclipsed the 100-inning plateau, and although his 2.44

ERA is among the league’s best, Grudzielanek and pitching coach Doug Bochtler know a respite isn’t far away.

Keller led the staff with 114⅓ innings entering Thursday, with All-Stars Solbach (110⅔) and Ethan Elias (91) next.

Leading the Midwest League’s Western Division standings, the Cougars face an added obstacle in their innings constraints.

“We’ve got to jell a little bit better, get some quality starts out there, which we have, for the most part, been doing,” Grudzielanek said. “So if we continue to do that, I like our chances to get into the playoffs and then hopefully do some damage once we get there.”

“There’s no doubt these kids put in hard work,” Piron said. “As much as you want to keep going and keep improving, this is a good break for the guys to get away from football for a while. It’s a chance to spend time with family and friends because there’s really not a ton of time once things get going.”

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski, entering his 17th year in charge of the Vikings, knows well what noncontact means.

But one thing it does not limit him from doing is unlocking a door. Even before Wicinski’s tenure, the Vikings developed what they call “captains lifts” during the noncontact days. Wicinski will unlock the weight room doors and be on his way.

After that, it’s up to senior leaders such as Princeton-bound defensive back Sean Chambers to take responsibility, continuing the trend to make the younger, less-experienced Vikings want to continue to work before the season gets underway.

“If you’re in town, you’re expected to be there,” Wicinski said. “It’s been like that for a long time around here. With the 25 days, these kids put in a lot of work, so if they need to get away during these 10 days, by all means do so. But if they are in town and able to make it, it really is strongly encouraged.”

“It’s hard to get every player to come to them,” Chambers said of the captains lifts. “But we know that when guys show up, we can actually see that they are putting in the work and that’s what is important.”

A barometer that Batavia, among other teams heading into the first day of summer camp, wanted to make sure it had an answer to at this point was this: If there was a game to be played tomorrow, would they be more prepared than their opponent?

Fortunately, all teams have 10 days to ponder their answer before the grueling season kicks into another gear.

Rosary High School student Monica Zimmerman of Batavia has been honored with a Certificate of Excellence from the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and with a President’s Volunteer Service Award – granted by the program on behalf of President Obama – for her volunteer service, according to a news release.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes young Americans for outstanding volunteer service.

Certificates of Excellence are granted to the top 10 percent of all applicants in each state and the District of Columbia.

President’s Volunteer Service Awards recognize Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their community and their country.

Zimmerman received the award based upon her work with the Crayons for Kids program in which students from Rosary High School and Marmion Academy collect school supplies for local children in need. Founded in 2004

by Zimmerman’s brother, Brian Zimmerman, Crayons for Kids now serves more than 90 schools/agencies in the Fox Valley-Naperville area.

Monica Zimmerman has volunteered with Crayons for Kids since its inception 10 years ago. Last year, more

Treat acid reflux to relieve symptoms of esophagitis Dear Doctor K: I have esophagitis. Could this have been caused by my acid reflux? What can I do about it?

Dear Reader: Yes, it could, and there are treatments. First, some explanation. The esophagus is the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth, through the chest and into the stomach. Normally you don’t feel the presence of the esophagus, except when you are swallowing.

Sometimes the lining of your esophagus becomes inflamed.

That’s called esophagitis. By far the most common cause of esophagitis is acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

A muscular ring (the esophageal sphincter) sits at the bottom of the esophagus, where it meets the stomach. Normally, the sphincter opens when you swallow, allowing food into your stomach. The rest of the time, it squeezes tight to prevent food and stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus.

In most people with GERD, however, the esophageal sphincter does not seal tightly. As a result, acid and digestive enzymes from the stomach flow backward into the esophagus. These caustic

Esophagitis causes several bothersome symptoms. Pain – in the throat or behind the breastbone – is a common symptom.

The pain can be burning, heavy or sharp, and it may be worse after meals or when you lie down.

Swallowing problems are also common. For example, if esophagitis is causing a persistent pain in your mid-chest, it may get worse when you swallow. Or you may feel like you have food sticking in your chest after you swallow. Esophagitis can also cause bleeding; if you sometimes vomit, you may see blood in your vomit.

The bleeding in your esophagus may travel downward and make the color of your stool very dark.

To treat esophagitis caused by acid reflux, you have to treat the acid reflux. Start with lifestyle changes: • Lose weight if necessary.

Being overweight causes more acid reflux.

• Eat small meals throughout the day rather than three large meals. Large meals generate more acid – and more acid reflux.

• Don’t lie down right after eating, since your stomach makes more acid during meals.

• Cut out cigarettes and alcohol, both of which stimulate acid production.

• Identify and avoid foods that cause symptoms. Common culprits include caffeine, chocolate, peppermint and high-fat foods.

Your doctor will likely prescribe acid-blocking medication as well. Examples include H2-blockers and proton-pump inhibitors.

If reflux and esophagitis continue, your doctor may recommend surgery to tighten the esophageal sphincter.

Your symptoms should begin to improve within days of starting the right treatment, but it can take weeks for symptoms to go away completely. In the meantime, your doctor can prescribe pain relievers.

Dear Teens: Louise is 15 and her best friend, Alexi, who is 16, recently had a baby, and Louise was invited to her “after” baby shower. Louise wanted to attend, but her mother didn’t want her to go because she thought it was “tacky” to have a shower for a 16-year-old unwed mother.

I responded by saying that it wasn’t “tacky” to have the shower, but that baby showers should be adult affairs and that 15-yearolds should have better things to do with their time and money than spending them both at a baby shower. My response brought many letters and emails “politely” informing me that I needed to rethink my answer. Here are a few representative letters: Dr. Wallace: I disagree with your advice to Louise. Baby showers are a ladies’ function, not an adult function, and what better thing do you suggest for a 15-year-old young woman to do than attend a friend’s baby shower?

If the opener bids one of a suit, the next player makes a takeout double, and the responder redoubles to show 10-plus points, either the opening side buys the contract, or the other side plays in something doubled for penalty. As a consequence, all doubles by the opening side are for penalty and all passes below game are forcing.

Look at today’s auction. Over North’s redouble, East ran to two clubs. Note that this promised no values because the logic of the auction (an opening bid, a takeout double and a redouble) made it clear that fourth hand had next to nothing.

Now, if South had bid immediately, it would have announced a minimum or subminimum opening. Here, South, after making a forcing pass, learned that his partner had game-invitational values with exactly three-card spade support, and jumped to four spades.

West led the club queen. After declarer covered with dummy’s king, East won with his ace, cashed the club 10, and shifted to a heart.

Since West was sure to have the heart king for his takeout double, South won with his ace. Then, if he had played a trump immediately, he would have lost one spade, one heart and two clubs. Instead, declarer cashed three diamond tricks to discard his heart loser. South’s 10 tricks were six spades, one heart and three diamonds.

Complete bids shall be submitted in duplicate, in a sealed envelope with the words "South Fourth Street Parking Lot" clearly marked on it, will be received by the City of Geneva, Illinois until 10:00 a.m. on Au-

gust 20, 2015 at the office of the City Administrator, located at 22 South First Street, Geneva, IL 60134, at which time the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud. Proposals submitted after the time specified will be returned to the bidder unopened. Bids that are not complete will not be read out loud after opening and will be returned.

Description of Work The “South Fourth Street Parking Lot” project consists of the construction of an approximately 1800 sq.yd. City parking lot with storm sewer drainage, site lighting, retaining walls, and landscaping at the South end of Fourth Street on the west side of the street; and the construction of angled parking stalls within the parkway of South Fourth Street. The parking lot will be constructed of either an HMA or PCC pavement (City's option) and it will connect to an existing HMA handicapped parking lot. The existing pavement markings located on the part of the paved area that will remain shall be removed. The HMA pavement that will remain shall be seal coated and the parking stalls shall be re-striped to the new configuration. There are existing trees/stumps, curb, sidewalk and fencing that shall be removed and replaced. The new parking lot area shall be excavated to establish grades. New curbs and pavement placed. The Contractor shall attain substantial completion (95% complete) no later than November 23, 2015. The Contractor shall complete the work no later than March 25, 2016. The disturbed areas will be restored with trees, topsoil, groundcovers, native grass seeding and mulch; the Contractor may use mulch (wood chip) from the City's stockpile. Current IDOT standards and means & methods of construction shall apply. The Contractor shall be responsible for the disposal of all items removed from the site and the transportation of all items that will be reused on site. The City has completed CCDD investigation of the site and testing of the site and the results is available for review or a hard copy can be obtained from Public Works.

Bidders Instructions 1) Plans and proposals will be available in the office of the Director of Public Works located at 1800 South Street Geneva, Illinois 601342547; Attn: C. Elton Orozco 630-232-1501.

2) Bidders shall submit two (2) completed copies of the entire Bid Documents.

3) All proposals shall be accompanied by a proposal guaranty equaling an amount not less than 5% of the bid amount. This guaranty may be in the form of a Bid Bond or cashier?s check.

4) The City of Geneva, Illinois reserves the right to reject any or all bids and waive technicalities.

5) The quantities appearing in the bid schedule are approximate and are prepared for comparison of bids. Payment to the Contractors will be made only for the actual quantities of work performed and accepted or for materials furnished according to the contract. The scheduled quantities of work to be done and materials to be furnished may be increased, decreased or omitted as hereinafter provided.

Submission of a bid is conclusive assurance and warranty that the bidder has examined the plans & specifications and understands all requirements for the performance of the work. The bidder shall be responsible for all errors and omissions in his bid package and errors in the proposal resulting from failure or neglect to conduct an in depth examination of the site and the plans & specifications. The City will, in no case be responsible for any unexpected cost, expenses, losses or changes in anticipated profits resulting from the errors and omissions of the bidder.

7) The bidder shall not take advantage of any errors or omissions in the proposal and advertised contract.

8) Permission will be given to the bidder to withdraw a proposal if the bidder makes the request in writing or in person before the time specified for opening the proposals.

9) All employees and suppliers working on this project shall be paid no less than the prevailing rate of wages as determined by the Illinois Department of Labor.

10) The Contractor and subcontractors shall certify that he/she is not in violation of, nor has been convicted, for a violation of the Illinois Public Construction Act. 11) A wet saw shall be used to cut all cementitious material and pavements.
