Electromagnet makes its final move

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermilab scientist Adam Lyon was busy snapping pictures Wednesday as workers helped move the 50-foot-wide circular electromagnet into place in its new home.

“This is exciting,” Lyon said. “This is only the beginning.”

The move marked the final trek for the 17-ton magnet, which attracted attention last summer on its 3,200-mile journey from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York to Fermilab.

The attention the magnet garnered surprised Fermilab staff.

“We didn’t think it was going to have that sort of rock star quality,” Lyon said.

The magnet is the centerpiece of Fermilab’s new Muon g-2 experiment, which will study the properties of elusive subatomic particles called muons.

The ring was built at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the 1990s for a similar experiment, one which found hints of new physics beyond what scientists have observed. A muon is a negatively charged particle, similar to an electron, but about 200 times heavier. Muons fall into the class of particles known as leptons.

Fermilab will conduct a similar experiment with the most powerful beam of muons in the world. Lyon is in charge of the computing and software for the Muon g-2 experiment.

“We want to very precisely study the properties of muons,” Lyon said. “How much muons wobble depends on what is happening around them.”

Scientists think that this deviation might be due to the presence of heavy, undiscovered particles or hidden subatomic forces.

“Perhaps we will discover new particles that are affecting muons,” Lyon said.

Through the experiment, scientists hope to discover more about muons.

“We are not really sure what purpose muons have in the universe,” Lyon said.

“We don’t think anything is made out of muons.”

The experiment is expected to start taking data in late 2016 or early 2017, Lyon said.

“There is still a lot of work to do,” he said.

Mike McEvoy of St. Charles, a graduate student at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, has also been working on the experiment.

McEvoy said he envisions the experiment will lead to other experiments and a better understanding of physics.

One year after completing its 3,200-mile journey from Long Island to Fermilab, the gigantic Muon g-2 electromagnet moved into its new building on the Fermilab campus near Batavia Wednesday morning.

Fermilab research associate Mandy Rominsky said the Muon g-2 experiment “represents a step forward in Fermilab’s future.”

Fermilab has made its share of discoveries over the years. In 1995, physicists at Fermilab announced the discovery of the top quark. The discovery was made through

Fermilab’s Tevatron accelerator, which shut down in 2011.

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle observed in nature.

Quarks are one of the fundamental building blocks of matter in the universe.

“Fermilab is alive and kicking,” she said.

Sculpture exhibition thrives as city art destination

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com If someone really wants to impress an out-of-town guest – and if they really want to show new visitors the best St. Charles has to offer – then a visit to the Sculpture in the Park exhibition at Mt. St. Mary Park is the thing to do.

That’s what one North Shore woman did for her mother on Mother’s Day, specifically to see “Rescue Kitty,” the second Sculpture in the Park entry by Sawyer, Michigan, artist Martha Cares.

“She loves your park and plans to bring her mother back for some exercise on a regular basis,” said Cares.

Whether they come for the art or for the atmosphere, patrons who visit the park between now and the end of September will find themselves immersed in the best of both worlds. Serenely nestled on the west bank of the scenic Fox River, there is no more picturesque spot in the city, nor one with a more impressive array of worldclass public art. From Tucson-based Pokey Park, whose whimsical bronze animals joyfully express a love of nature, to Kenosha, Wisconsin, sculptor Bruce Niemi’s soaring stainless-steel towers that float above the park like silver wings, the variety of the 13 pieces provided by 12 talented sculptors from around the country and region exhibits a wide range of media and infinite interpretations of nature and the human condition.

“It’s a very contemplative show,” said Jane Davidson, one of two St. Charles sculptors participating this year. “I love the setting. You can walk from one piece to another with enough time to think about them or sit on a bench and ponder the artist’s intentions.” Davidson, whose 300-pound stainless steel sculpture is entitled “Truth,” is a first-time participant in this year’s show.

Indeed, interacting with

each sculpture is as individual an experience as the pieces themselves. For fellow St. Charles sculptor Douglas Eageny, who works with elements from nature and recycled materials, the medium is a message in and of itself. This year’s entry represents Eageny’s fourth Sculpture in the Park exhibit, and while his metal-andstone sculpture “Whirlwind” has a specific meaning to him, “people see it and it might represent something entirely different to them.”

The response to Cares’ “Rescue Kitty” sculpture is not so ambiguous. A fierce advocate for shelter animals, Cares followed up her 2013 “My Rescue Dog” sculpture with a beguiling, smiling gray cat – both pieces part of her mission to create awareness of the millions of animals helped by rescue organizations and shelters each year.

“I want people to see my work and feel the heartwarming emotion that anyone who has ever cherished a pet has experienced,” said Cares, “but I also want them to honor the people who generously devote themselves to animal rescue and, ideally, become inspired to become part of that effort.”

Now in its ninth year, this free annual celebration is a joint venture between the St. Charles Park District and the St. Charles Park Foundation. This year’s entrants can be found situated along a half-mile walking path and join eight sculptures from prior shows permanently on display. From the massive, 2,500-pound, fire-engine red, steel sculpture “Here” by Chicago artist Ruth Aizuss Migdal to the diminutive 28-pound bronze “Ballerina” by Lake in the Hills artist Patricia Brutchin, all sculptures are for sale. Prices range from $1,200 to $70,000.

But for visitors who have neither the budget nor the setting for a one-of-a-kind piece of public art, yet still

The park is located east of Route 31 and south of Prairie Street in St. Charles. want a tangible memory of their visit, smaller, tabletop replicas of Martha Cares’ two sculptures, “My Rescue Kitty,” and 2013’s “My Rescue Dog” are for sale at $75 and $150, respectively, at both

the Baker and Pottawatomie community centers.

For the artists, just being in the Sculpture in the Park show is memory enough. “I was fascinated by the installation of my sculpture and

took dozens of pictures,” said Davidson, who couldn’t envision the machinations involved in wrangling a massive yet fragile work of art into place. “These gentlemen from the park district’s maintenance department are real pros at what they do.”

Eageny eagerly agrees.

“The park district and the commission were supportive and encouraging of me and my art, and they are doing important work by bringing people downtown and letting visitors know that the city supports artists and is committed to the beautification of the city,” he said.

Indeed, the Sculpture in the Park exhibition attracts thousands of visitors annually. So whether one is playing tour guide for a house guest or simply wants to spend a tranquil afternoon surrounded by the beauty provided

by Mother Nature and the talented artists she inspires, Mt. St. Mary Park is the place to be this summer.

COVER STORY NEW LAW TO END TICKET QUOTAS Locally, most police agencies say they never had them anyway

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Nothing spoils a day like a parking ticket under a windshield-wiper blade or being pulled over for speeding.

“If there’s anything we do the public hates us for, it’s writing traffic tickets,” Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said.

“And you want to make sure – if you are writing one – that it’s absolutely justified.”

Sometimes members of the public might wonder whether they got a ticket to make an officer’s quota. A new law, Senate Bill 3411, not only eliminates police ticket quotas, but it also prevents quotas from being used to evaluate an officer’s performance. The new law goes into effect Jan. 1 and applies to local, county and state police officers.

The law likely will not change things too much locally, as police departments said they do not have ticket quotas – and never did.

Police departments in Geneva, Batavia, North Aurora, Sugar Grove, Elburn, St. Charles, Campton Hills and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office will be unaffected, officials said.

“We have performance standards. We just expect officers to stay busy,” said St. Charles Deputy Chief Dave Kintz. “But we don’t dictate that we have to have a certain number of this or that. It’s not going to affect us at all, not really.”

“We’ve never had quotas,” said Elburn Police Chief Steven Smith. “It’s up to the officer’s discretion.”

Batavia Police Records Supervisor Tony Davis said everything a police officer does is recorded somewhere electronically, so how many tickets an officer writes does not matter.

“We measure everything,” Davis said. “I have to run stats from month to month

Edward R. Arbet, 55, of the 600 block of North Prairie Street, was charged Wednesday with aggravated identity theft, theft exceeding $300, un-

lawful use of a credit card and two counts of forgery, all felonies.

The identity theft is considered aggravated because the victim, a Bat- Edward avia man, is R. Arbet more than 60 years old, said Batavia Police

Detective Kevin Bretz.

The investigation began in early June, when a store owner reported that Arbet attempted to use a stolen credit card he obtained from an acquaintance to purchase clothing, police said.

Arbet continued to use the credit card for goods and cash withdrawals.

“He used it at [at] least three stores in Batavia and an

Arbet also signed the victim’s name on at least two receipts, police said.

He is alleged to have stolen more than $1,500 in cash and goods. If convicted on all counts, Arbet could face a maximum jail sentence of 27

New website reports local coyote sightings

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Coyote hunter Rob Erickson has set up a coyote sightings page online for area residents to report seeing sick, injured or problem coyotes.

Erickson recently spoke to Geneva city officials about reports of problem coyotes in some subdivisions. Erickson advocated removing and euthanizing aggressive coyotes that were unafraid of people.

City staff members are researching the situation, officials said.

The reporting site is online at scientificwildlifemanagement.com/report-a-sighting.

“This could be very helpful for residents and city officials to accumulate information that is needed to make an educated decision on whether removal is warranted,” Erickson wrote in an email.

The website includes multiple photos of coyotes, including photos of coyotes afflicted with sarcoptic mange.

According to the Cook County, Illinois, Coyote Project, the debilitating disease is transmitted by a mite that burrows into the skin of the animal.

The resulting infection causes the coyote to lose most of its hair, and then it dies from exposure.

GENEVA – While the Third Street commuter parking deck will be closed for about six months during construction of a third tier, the city will provide free shuttle service to the Metra station at 328 Crescent Place.

The parking deck will be closed starting Monday for construction work to begin – work that will add a third tier to the existing downtown structure. Once completed, the expanded deck will provide parking for about 540 vehicles.

Free temporary commuter shuttle service and parking will be available at the First Baptist Church East Campus, 2300 South St., Geneva, as well as the baseball field parking lot east of the Public Works Department, 1800 South St., Geneva.

Commuters will not be charged to park at the shuttle lots or to ride the shuttle bus during construction, officials said.

“We are thrilled that the long awaited completion of the commuter parking level is officially beginning,” Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said. “We

is being funded entirely by grants through Metra. Construction is anticipated to be completed in the winter, with additional restoration work being finished next spring.

The expansion project was approved by Metra, the Regional Transportation Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation and the City Council.

The deck is being expanded in order to accommodate parking that will be lost as part of Union Pacific’s plans to add a third rail line, which will remove some existing surface parking spaces.

During construction, the parking deck will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. The contractor also will be closing the Second Street entrance drive to the structure, removing some onstreet parking spots.

Signs have been posted at the Metra station and throughout the area notifying commuters of the construction, according to the city. Flyers also have been distributed to commuters and business owners about the project.

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A sport utility vehicle Wednesday afternoon went through the plate-glass window of a vacant business unit in a strip mall on St. Charles’ west side, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

Emergency responders found a black Toyota RAV4 completely inside the front space of a vacant unit in the 2000 block of West Main Street in St. Charles. St. Charles police and fire crews were dispatched at 5:33 p.m.

Wednesday to the incident, Schelstreet said.

The woman driving the SUV told police and fire officials at the scene that she mistakenly accelerated when she pulled up to a parking spot in front of the unit, Schelstreet said. There were no injuries reported at the scene and the St. Charles Fire Department did not find any other structural damage to the building.

Jimmy Dalipi was working on the second floor of his business located next to the vacant unit during the crash.

He said the impact of the car hitting the building sounded like something had exploded.

“I ran outside to see what [happened], and I saw the car inside,” said Dalipi of the family-owned Tailor, Needle & Thread business.

A St. Charles Fire Department official backed the SUV out of the building and it was driven away from the scene with a partially cracked windshield.

Firefighters swept up the window glass and debris, and police remained on scene until a representative of the property was able to have the unit secured.

He noted the cost of natural gas is projected to increase by 30 percent, and the city of St. Charles has imposed surcharges on water and sewer service.

Additionally, Onzick said, user fee revenues should cover the cost of services provided.

The county is investing $23,500 in an independent cost-of-service study that will determine whether user fees collected by the clerk’s office, recorder’s office, sheriff’s office and Animal Control are sufficient.

Such a study is required before those offices’ user fees could be increased, Onzick said. He said other user fees under the county’s control will be reviewed as time and resources allow.

Wednesday, County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said that “as long as everything goes well,” a recommendation for board approval could be on the Aug. 12 agenda.

“We’re cautiously optimistic,” he said.

Kane County Animal Control has been without an administrator since May 7, when former Interim Administrator Robert Sauceda resigned amid a personnel investigation. The job description for the senior management position included such minimum requirements as experience in local, state or federal government; proficiency in oral and written communication; three years’

experience in providing an animal control or related public health program; and a master’s of business management or a bachelor’s degree in public administration or related field.

The listed salary range was $65,000 to $70,000 for 40-plus hours a week. Earlier this month, Lauzen said three finalists were selected for interviews. The chairman, Health Department Executive Director Barb Jeffers, Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven and board members Monica Silva, D-Aurora, Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, and Susan Starrett, R-Batavia, participated in the process.

Lauzen said he is grateful for the work done by Jeffers and her staff while Animal Control has been short-staffed.

The health department oversees Animal Control.

GENEVA – Kane County has a $2 million problem.

Wednesday, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told County Board members that each standing committee must review their departments’ and offices’ budgets and encourage them to make cuts where possible to reduce an anticipated $2 million shortfall in the 2015 general fund.

“Obviously, the deficit must be eliminated,” Onzick said.

The budget was created with the assumption that the property tax levy remains flat for the fourth consecutive year, Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said.

The objective, he said, is “not to make it harder on our residents.”

Revenues are budgeted at

about $82.2 million, whereas expenditures are estimated at about $84.3 million.

Expenses include $266,680 for new staff – an administrative assistant for the auditor, four youth counselors for the Juvenile Justice Center, a receptionist for the public defender and a sheriff’s deputy.

Nearly $124,000 in health and dental benefits is requested for those new positions.

Health and dental benefits also are expected to increase for existing staff. The requested budget is about $9.5 million, compared to nearly $8.9 million in 2014.

Onzick said requests for extra personnel must be carefully evaluated, and the cost of health insurance must be reduced – a topic that was recently discussed and will be revisited at the Committee of the Whole meeting in August.

People to People Ambassador Programs hosted a UCLA film and arts leadership summit, which Lily attended; and a Yale University leadership summit, which Ali attended.

The summits provided professional workshops and presentations.

Betsy Lichner, Ali and Lily’s mother, proposed the summit opportunities to her daughters.

The summits required that applications be filled out.

“I have a friend who talked very highly of it,” Betsy

Lichner said about People to People. “I thought this is a perfect time for [Lily] ... right before she applies to colleges.”

Film producing was a top career choice for Lily, but she took a greater liking to cinematography during her summit.

“I’m definitely more interested and eager to go to college and do [cinematography] work than I was before, since I know what it’s like to work in [film], and I’ve met people who work in the industry,” Lily said.

Lily met film producer Brad Fischer, a professional who she said was very helpful. The experience was important in her decision to focus on cinematography, she said.

Unsure whether she would choose law or public speaking for a career, Ali used her summit to narrow down the decision.

“We did a presentation where we had to speak in front of a big group of people,” Ali said. “Motivational speaker Sunjay Nath came in, too, and it really inspired me to

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post Recent polling for the 2014 midterms and beyond is plentiful but not always illuminating. There are two exceptions to this: Polls that show a consensus for a trend/wave election; and dramatic movement toward a particular candidate.

Mainstream media polling outfits seem increasingly to agree the GOP will win six or more Senate seats, enough to capture the Senate majority.

The New York Times/CBS/YouGov poll gives Republicans a 60 percent chance of taking the Senate. The poll finds positive shifts for the GOP in Senate races in Michigan and – after the primary win by businessman David Perdue – Georgia. The Times/CBS/ YouGov poll echoes the Democracy Corps poll that found the GOP ahead 46 percent to 44 percent in 12 swing states.

The poll numbers seems to confirm two trends we see in many races. First, the candidate problems seem to be with the Democrats (e.g. Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa, Sen. John Walsh of Montana), whereas in past years the GOP had the self-destructive candidates. Second, the president’s “Congress is doing nothing” argument is undercut by the purported agreement on Veterans Affairs reforms. If the House could pass a measure to address the border security issue, created in large part by the president, this would further help Republicans’ effort to demonstrate they can govern effectively.

Early 2016 polling, as I’ve said before, is of limited utility. However, dramatic movement for or against a candidate is worth noting. In that department, Texas Gov. Rick Perry stands out. He is in a statistical tie for first, up five points in a month, in the latest CNN poll. Meanwhile, the Republican candidate who has suffered the most over the past six months or so seems to be Sen. Marco Rubio, Fla., not New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has held ground after slipping from front-runner status. Whether this is indicative of a trend or is merely a polling blip remains to be seen.

Don’t ‘Share a Coke’ with me For those of you who are up on ads lately, you’ve probably noticed the Coca-Cola summer campaign, “Share a Coke.” Its commercials are bouncing with racially ambiguous young adults throwing spontaneous celebrations, coyly passing glass bottles like valentines and even blossoming new love.

What’s all this fuss over?

Personalized Cokes with their personal and ambiguous names personally and artfully printed across the label.

Anyone can go to shareacoke. com to search whether their personal name is on a personal Coke in a store personally close to them. After seeing the ad for the zillionth time, I decided to give my name of questionable personality a shot. It came as no surprise that I found that Brigid is not, in fact, on any Coca-Colas in the United States, and only found in an incorrectly spelled form in Ireland.

I know, that while I take particular sensitivity to my name, I am part of a greater people in this great injustice.

I know so many other people who don’t have their own names on Coke bottles. While I don’t really care about a bottle of soda, I do care about this giant corporation’s idea of “personal-

The idea is admittedly genius: While perusing a convenience store, someone not looking to buy a Coke casually comes across a bottle with the name of a family member/friend/ coworker/crush/themselves and spontaneously decides to buy it. Unfortunately, these kinds of coincidences will only happen to people with common names like Nick and Jess.

The worst part is those kinds of people are so used to having novelty things with their names already written all over them. (I’m still bitter about all those No. 1 Kid keychains).

Just how personal is this choice of names, in reality?

Sure, I could go to any old store and pick out any number of things with the name Emily on them, but if I receive something with my name on it, I would know that whoever gave it to me went out of his or her way to make or find it. It seems like the people behind Share a Coke took the

easy way out and chose names that they could produce in mass and would have the broadest appeal.

The real key to this campaign would’ve been to incorporate some unexpected monikers. I bet bottles with names like Ankit, Juliann, and – crazy thought – Brigid would sell just as much, if not more than the current collection. If I was in Target and saw anything with my name (literally) already on it, I would buy it in a heartbeat, no matter the price. This is a great opportunity for any of Coca-Cola’s competitors to launch a similar line of products with the names that were left out of this campaign.

It’s a good thing I actually don’t like soda. I just like the thought of being included in something that has been plastered across national television, radio and the Internet. The next time I do decide to drink a pop, I think I’ll go for a Pepsi.

No one was injured in the fire, which caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the truck, owned by Diamond Rigging, 680 Kingsland Drive.

Batavia firefighters continue to investigate the cause of

the fire, stated a news release from the Batavia Fire Department.

Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said in the release that the truck was a “total loss.” Firefighters responded to the scene at 5:21 a.m. and had it under control at 5:30 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, the cab of the semitrailer was fully engulfed in flames, states the release.

A LASTING FRIENDSHIP Danish student stays in touch with host family for years

He must have a good bond with your family.

Boelke: We’ve had other foreign exchange students, but he is the only one who really clicked with us. And that happens.

The other ones were a little bit more distant. But he just fell in with our family.

He was a lot like us. Also, he was great at the high school. He fit in with the kids, and he loved being there. He appreciated it.

GENEVA – Bob and Sandi Boelke did not realize when they hosted Danish foreign exchange student Frederik Liberti in 1996 that their relationship with him would turn into a lifelong friendship.

The couple in May went to Copenhagen for two weeks to visit him. He has visited them nine times.

Kane County Chronicle Eric Schelkopf spoke to Sandi Boelke about the recent trip to see Liberti, who is 33 now and has a family.

Eric Schelkopf: What made you want to visit him this year?

Sandi Boelke: We wanted to meet his mother, whom we had never met. And now he has two children and a wife.

So it was our turn to go there.

Schelkopf: So, you’ve literally seen him grow up over the years.

Boelke: Exactly. We keep in touch through Skype and his return visits, and we write notes and call him.

Schelkopf: What made you want to host a foreign exchange student in the first place?

Boelke: I felt like I really wanted my children to understand the different cultures and the different ways of Europe. And I do believe that they learned quite a bit from him.

He lived with us for a year. He went through Geneva High School and completed his senior year there.

His very favorite teacher there was Roxanne Curtis, the music teacher.

And she did teach him a lot. He was in many of the groups, like the jazz group and the different groups that she had for the music students.

Schelkopf: And now he fronts his own band.

Boelke: He does.

Schelkopf: He was at your house for a year. What types of things did you try to introduce him to?

Boelke: Well, of course, we went into Chicago, and we went to the ice skating rink. We went to lots of places around Kane County, like the Kane County Fair.

We took him to Springfield, so he could see all of the culture of our state. We also took him to Disney World in Orlando, and he accompanied our family to Niagara Falls.

Schelkopf: This was the first time you had been to Copenhagen. What did you think? Did it live up to your expectations?

Boelke: It was a very, very old country. And I’ve never seen so much cobblestone in my whole entire life.

You know how everything is paved here? It was all cobblestone there.

But it was a very unique country, and very beautiful. We took a ride on a Viking ship, which was really incredible.

Schelkopf: When was the last time he visited you here?

Boelke: Three years ago. He came here for a week, and then he went to see the Redwoods in California.

Schelkopf: Did you think this relationship would last this long?

Boelke: No, I never would have imagined that we would become so close. In all sense of the word, he is my son.

He loves having two mothers. He calls me “mom,” but he also calls his mother “mom.”

It was strange being there with his mom. He would say “mom,” and we would both look.

Schelkopf: Since he visits you so much,

and when we Skype, we try to include them as much as possible.

Schelkopf: So, do you see yourself hosting any more foreign exchange students in the future?

Boelke: We possibly might get involved again. It was more for when the kids were in high school, but I do see us doing it again, just to have someone who needs a place to stay.

Schelkopf: For someone thinking of hosting a foreign exchange student, what would you say the benefits are?

Boelke: Well, you can teach everyone in the household about other cultures and different societies.

But he did speak English very, very well, and that was a plus. The Danes learn English in fifth grade, so they start very early. There was no language barrier. He spoke as well as us.

Also, you learn from each other.

There is no doubt that we learned a lot from him, and he learned a lot from us.

GENEVA – Living in the Midwest may not always provide ample opportunities to enjoy the fresh, “off the boat” catches you would expect to find in states bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean or Gulf of Mexico. But getting fresh seafood in the Chicago suburbs is not an impossible feat.

Located in the Dodson Place plaza overlooking tree-lined 3rd Street in downtown Geneva, is the upscale American restaurant Wildwood, and every Thursday it receives a shipment of fresh oysters, which it serves on Thursday.

And – so I was told – the restaurant also has a tendency to sell out on Thursday, providing its dining clientele ample opportunity for fresh fare.

The Oyster Bar opens in the Wildwood lounge beginning at 5 p.m. It’s not a buffet – you still order from a menu. The Oyster Bar menu is usually posted on the restaurant website the day before so customers know exactly from where the next day’s shipments of oysters are hailing. Normally, Wildwood offers four different kinds of oysters on the half shell – two from the East Coast and two from the West Coast. The menu also includes Peel ’N Eat Shrimp, New England Clam Chowder and discounted Prosecco, rose and sparkling wine ($5.50 a glass).

Only three of the four oyster options had made it in on time that particular Thursday, so we ordered three ($7.50) of the Delaware oysters from Delaware Bay, New Jersey; and three ($7.50) of the Fanny Bay oysters from Baynes Sound British Columbia, Canada.

They also can be ordered by the half dozen ($12) and dozen ($20).

Our oysters came shucked and presented on ice with fresh lemons, champagne mignonette sauce, Tabasco and horseradish. The Delaware oysters were large, plump and had a salty, crisp flavor, while the Fanny Bay oysters were medium in size and had a sweet, citrus flavor.

The very process of oyster eating – the squeezing of the lemon, smattering of horseradish, Tabasco sauce and delicate slurping – instantly rendered me defenseless to a “vacation” state of mind. The last time I enjoyed fresh oysters was in Florida two years ago. So, this was quite a treat.

The Gulf shrimp are boiled with Cajun and garlic spices and served with lemons and a side of cocktail sauce. I could have stayed at that table peeling and eating shrimp into the wee hours of the evening. They were cooked to perfection, easy to peel and the spices enhanced

the shrimp without overpowering them.

The clam chowder elicited a similar response with its heavy creamy concoction of onions, potatoes, clams and subtle kick of spice at the end of each bite.

Exploring the culinary scene in Kane County can be quite an adventure, and it’s always particularly enjoyable when you discover a place that delivers exactly what you crave, and with the utmost precision.

Chicago Irish band The Tossers to perform in Aurora music?

Duggins: What we did bring was a contemporary turn to it, like The Pogues did. All the bands that kind of do what we do all have a slightly different bent on how they approach it.

The real thing that we’ve added to it is a place, in Chicago especially, where people can come together and celebrate their heritage.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to The Tossers lead singer Tony Duggins about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: Of course, you guys are going to be at the Fox Valley Irish Festival with two other Irish bands from Illinois. Does that make it even more of a special occasion?

Tony Duggins: I’m sure it will. We’ll play with anybody.

Schelkopf: Of course, The Tossers celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. What should people expect when they come out this weekend? Are you going to play songs from your entire career?

Duggins: We’re going to do a song off every record at least, as well as hopefully some new songs and some old traditional stuff, too.

That was it. That was really it. And then people started coming to the shows and we started getting shows at bigger clubs, and it went on from there.

It was the people’s response to it, really. We were just having a good time.

Schelkopf: What were your goals in starting the band in the first place?

Duggins: We were 18 years old. We were just trying to get into bars and play music and

Schelkopf: Are you surprised that people connected so well to your music and that here you are 20 years later?

Duggins: I always knew that I was going to try to make a

career out of music. I didn’t necessarily know it would be with this group.

I assumed back then we would be just playing in bars and at festivals and stuff. It is a pleasant surprise that we’re still doing it after all this time.

Schelkopf: Being that you are from the South Side of Chicago, was it a given that you guys would be in an Irish band?

Duggins: Maybe, the way that fate turns out. You are surrounded by that [culture]

in Chicago. We were.

I was never into Irish music as a kid because I didn’t think it was cool. As I got older, I started getting into more music than just punk rock and heavy metal.

Schelkopf: Were there any bands that led you to the fact that Irish music could be cool?

Duggins: Yeah, The Pogues, hands down. They are the best.

Schelkopf: What do you think your band has brought to Irish

Schelkopf: Of course, your brother, Aaron, is in the band, too.

I imagine there are pros and cons about having a sibling in the same band. Are there more pros than cons?

Duggins: We may argue over stuff from time to time, but believe me, that’s very rare.

We’re pretty much all on the same page as far as the music goes.

My brother is probably is one of the greatest assets we have in this band. Every one of us performs as best as we can.

Schelkopf: There are a lot of references to Chicago on your last album, “The Emerald City.” Would you say that it is your most personal album to date?

Duggins: It is. I felt like I really needed to represent myself a lot more on the album and where I come from.

It was time to make a homage to Chicago and my family and my friends.

At the end of the day, this is the reason why we are doing it. It is a celebration of culture and family and friends.

And really, it is a celebration of our lives in this city.

Meaghan Ciochon and Kaitlin Frei, recent graduates of a less colloquial kind, experienced the terrain and atmosphere of the Fox River Trail Runners Summer Sunset 5K for the first time.

However runners heard about the finish line they eventually crossed Wednesday, they all had motives for getting there. Moments after taking the overall title in 15:32, the 19-year-old Bianchina called the night “a little rust-buster” as he prepares for his sophomore cross country and track seasons at Bradley.

In one way or another, didn’t that phrase apply to each of the approximately 500 athletes who participated in the 5K and preceding youth mile, junior jog and toddler trot?

“I did this race going into my sophomore year of high school and I remember it was really hard. It was like, ‘Oh, this is awful,’ ” Bianchina said.

“Now that I’ve trained more in college, I’ve grown to like it a lot more and am taking it more seriously. Doing all the right stuff and eating well and all that stuff that really helps that no one really knows about.”

Nelson, 23, certainly can attest. After completing his collegiate running career at Syracuse last year, he returned home and has been studying with a chiropractor and nutritionist while serving as a Vikings assistant coach.

Twenty-eight seconds off Bianchina’s pace, he told the winner, “Way to be, brother,” after finishing second and bolted for the other side of the Burgess Field track. There, several familiar faces – including Vikings girls track coach and cross country assistant Peter Raak – were harnessing their final kicks. The course weaved through the Gray Street neighborhood around Burgess before the final 300 meters unfolded on the track.

Geneva graduate Michael Bianchina was the first finisher of Wednesday’s Summer Sunset 5K at Geneva High School.

17:42, 44 seconds ahead of a male counterpart whose very registration tactic illustrated the upbeat spirit of the night. A 44-year-old Geneva man listed as Yoda Jedimaster took 13th in 18:36.

“Star Wars” enthusiasts surely would applaud, if only after reporting that Yoda really hails from Dagobah and died around age 900.

The top two female finishers, Ciochon, 22, and Frei, 18, came from slightly closer than a galaxy far, far away. Ciobhan

(18:44), who graduated from Judson University in May, lives in her native Elgin and heard about the race through a friend who works at Geneva Running Outfitters.

Frei (18:47), a recent New Trier graduate from Winnetka, credited Google for informing her of the race. A cross country and track recruit at Notre Dame, she felt urgency to follow her coach’s request to compete in a summer 5K before coming to South Bend.

Frei took to the Internet,

and the Summer Sunset suited her.

“Very nice course,” she said. “This was fun.”

Ciochon ultimately agreed, although she was at first uncertain of the route when she arrived about 90 minutes before the race’s 7:15 p.m. start time.

Luckily, she had pacers to help her along, as well as her husband.

Tim Ciochon doubled as his wife’s cross country coach for her final season at Judson.

They were married about 18 months ago, before he was appointed to the position. They met as Judson athletes.

On Wednesday, the pair ran close by before Tim Ciochon – 10th overall in 18:30 – pulled away in the final stretch at his wife’s behest.

“I just told him to go,” Meaghan Ciochon said. “He had a little more left than I did.”

The youth mile also proved to be a family affair, with the 11-and-over division producing the closest calls. Champion Jaden Ahern of Geneva finished in 6:50, edging brothers Ethan Hipp (6:53) and Lucas Hipp (7:07), also of Geneva.

Lucas Hipp acknowledged times are “usually pretty competitive” between he and his older brother, respective sixthand seventh-graders at Geneva Middle School North.

Bianchina and Nelson are a few more years apart, but still enjoy sporadic workout runs together. While the Summer Sunset included chip timing, music and the witticism of race announcer Todd Busteed, most elements of Wednesday night still felt recreational.

“Andrew’s a great guy. I love racing with him, and I love training with him,” Bianchina said. “He’s always a good training partner to have.”

The Cubs wrap up their four-game series with the Rockies by sending Jake Arrieta (5-2, 2.18) to the mound to face Tyer Matzek (2-5, 4.39).

Megan McEachern knows the Illinois State University campus well, and her wardrobe already includes a starter set of Redbirds gear.

Becoming the third sibling to attend ISU has its advantages in developing a quick comfort level with her future school.

McEachern, a Batavia junior, has two years before her relationship with ISU grows more personal.

The standout midfielder offered the Redbirds’ women’s soccer program Megan her verbal comMcEachern mitment Tuesday.

McEachern’s brother, Sean, and sister, Lindsay, attend ISU now but both project to graduate before she arrives in Normal in 2016.

Her family’s familiarity with ISU helped embolden McEachern to make a relatively early college decision, choosing the Division-I Redbirds over options such as Wisconsin-Whitewater and Wisconsin-Parkside.

“I really liked it because I’m so familiar with the school and [the university] has a lot of different majors, and I don’t know what I want to do yet, so that was a plus,” McEachern said. “And then I love the soccer program … and I wanted something kind of close to home, so

that’s going to work out, too.”

McEachern attended a soccer camp at ISU that concluded Sunday and had a follow-up conversation with ISU coach Drew Roff, who offered McEachern a scholarship, but wanted her to make up her mind in the next few weeks.

Turns out, McEachern only needed about 48 hours.

“I kind of just jumped on it right way because I knew I wanted to do it,” McEachern said.

While making a college decision the summer after her sophomore year is an accelerated timetable, McEachern is not one to dawdle when it comes to her soccer career. She cracked Batavia’s varsity lineup as a freshman and scored two goals in the team’s season-opening match. McEachern remained an offensive focal point for the Bulldogs as a sophomore, earning Kane County Chronicle Honorable Mention All-Area honors.

McEachern plays travel soccer through Tri-Cities Premier, the program through which she met Geneva senior Megan Kozlow, who previously verbally committed to play for the Redbirds.

McEachern’s siblings project to be ISU graduates by fall 2016 but Kozlow figures to be waiting.

“I think it’s cool knowing someone, at last when you go in,” McEachern said. “I actually like that, and she’s really nice, so it’ll be fun.”

Former NIU golfer takes over at North

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Irish Whalen was a late-bloomer in golf, only taking up the sport her final two years in high school after an injury forced her out of her original fall sport, volleyball.

By her senior year, Whalen was the top golfer on her coed team at River Ridge High School in northwestern Illinois, and on her way to a college golf career at Northern Illinois University.

Recently appointed as Irish Whalen St. Charles North’s new girls golf coach, Whalen will do her best to help North’s golfers progress just as quickly.

Whalen, though, knows golf can be an exasperating sport, and said helping golfers learn from some of their rough shots – and rounds – will be a focal point.

“I didn’t start competing really until I was 15, 16, so I had some of those same growing experiences [during college] because I hadn’t competed as much as my teammates, so those 1-on-1 conversations you have through rounds really help you grow,” Whalen said.

Whalen said she found out last month she would replace former North coach Chris Patrick, a teaching colleague of Whalen’s at Wredling Middle School.

“He had indicated to me that he was going to step away

from it and he thought I’d be a good fit for the program and with the girls so that kind of triggered my interest in the position,” Whalen said.

Whalen is entering her sixth year as a teacher at Wredling and spent the past five years as a lower-level coach in St. Charles East’s girls golf program.

Whalen also spent a year coaching girls and boys golf at Sterling High School in 200809.

Whalen, an Arlington Heights resident, golfed at NIU in the early 2000s, and said former Huskies coach Pam Tyska and her father, Bill Whalen, are her greatest golf influences.

Her first North Stars team seems poised to keep the program’s successful tradition intact as Gianna Furrie and Kate Lillie are both coming off dynamite freshman seasons.

Whalen met the team earlier this month and will preside over tryouts beginning Aug. 13.

Three of the four Tri-Cities girls golf coaches are new to their positions this fall, as Batavia (Tim Kauffmann) and Geneva (Doug Ross) also have shuffled their girls golf coaching staffs.

It remains to be seen which of the new coaches will thrive the most, but Whalen certainly owns the most memorable first name of the bunch. She said “Irish” came about to honor the heritage of her father’s side of the family.

“I can’t imagine it any other way,” Whalen said.

The Cougars File Last year: 8-5 Last bowl game: 2013 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, lost to Washington, 31-16 Against NIU: The two teams have never met MAC attack: The last time BYU played a current Mid-American Conference team was in 1983, when the Cougars won, 63-28, against Bowling Green. The only MAC schools BYU has played are Bowling Green and Western Michigan, and the Cougars hold a 4-3 record against the conference, according to college football information database stassen.com.

The good: In the second game of the 2013 season, BYU earned a 40-21 win over Texas in Provo.

The bad: Two weeks after their win over the Longhorns, the Cougars fell, 20-13, to Utah in the “Holy War” rivalry game.

The ugly: BYU lost three of its last five games in 2013, including the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl loss to Washington. contract bowls. The only way BYU would be able to participate in the playoff is if the Cougars were selected as one of the four semifinal teams.

There have been rumors about BYU getting into another conference, with the Big 12 being a league that’s mentioned often. Whether the Cougars are still not affiliated by the time their series with NIU rolls around could be a factor by the time the games roll around.

Frazier acknowledged the possibility the Cougars might no longer be independent when these games take place.

He said that no matter what league, if any, BYU is in, the Cougars make a good opponent because of the body of work it has put together. He called BYU a national brand.

“Our scheduling philosophy is about putting together a home and home schedule and putting together worthy opponents, and they’re right there,” he said. “It’s a great matchup regardless if they’re in a big five conference.”

Those are two words Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier mentioned when talking about BYU football.

The Cougars, NIU’s second opponent announced via its SchedulePalooza campaign, happen to be one of the most historic mid-major programs of all-time.

On Wednesday, NIU announced a home-and-home series with BYU. The Huskies will play the Cougars on Oct. 27, 2018 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah and the Cougars will visit NIU on Oct. 24, 2020.

“The reality is that they’re a quality football program,” Frazier said. “When you look at a body of work such as BYU, a program that’s been consistently winning and consistently doing it across the board from home and away, you’ve got to give them their due. You’ve got to give them respect.”

BYU has made a bowl appearance each of the past nine seasons, and only three programs have won more games than BYU over the past 20 seasons. BYU won the consensus national championship in 1984, the last mid-major team to accomplish the feat.

The school also is home to the last Heisman Trophy winner from a non-major conference – quarterback Ty Detmer in 1990.

“When you think of BYU football, it has a tradition, it has a respect,” Frazier said.

“It was great to have them on the schedule.”

The Cougars have competed as an independent since 2011. They previously were a member of the Mountain West Conference.

However, being an independent hurts the Cougars’ chances of gaining exposure to the new College Football Playoff.

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com LAS VEGAS – It no longer is a question of if Derrick Rose will make Team USA. Considering the damage he has been inflicting on opposing guards through the first three days of the tryouts, it’s more about when will they just go ahead and make it official?

Rose all but did on Wednesday. Well, kind of.

In discussing new Bulls teammate Pau Gasol, who was signed as a free agent this month, Rose mistakenly said, “I talked to [Gasol] before he signed and he said when we get to Spain [for next month’s FIBA Cup] that we’ll probably

get something to eat, so I’ll probably catch up with him, get dinner or something.”

Call it either Rose already knowing something or just having flat-out confidence in his ability.

Go with the latter, because if there is one thing Rose is Derrick Rose n o t l a c k i n g these days it is his confidence. Admittedly, a far cry from where he was last year.

For the first time since suffering the tear of the left ACL, Rose said that his attitude about the game of basketball going into the 2013-14 season was not good. And although

he only lasted only 10 games into the regular season before a torn right meniscus derailed his comeback, it’s an attitude he doesn’t want to experience again.

“I think, looking back at it, the first time I came back, I felt like it was [darn] near like a job, instead of just going out there and having fun,” Rose said. “When I came back last fall, I felt like it was a job. I wasn’t smiling, I wasn’t enjoying the game, I was trying not to mess up, and with me, I usually just go out there and play, and me playing at least is something good. But at the time, it was just too much going on and I think that was just a dark side for me, a dark period of time.”

Rose said the second injury changed him, made him appreciate what he had and what he was missing.

Then to see what his front office was able to do this offseason, well, that smile is coming a lot easier these days.

“I have that sense that they went for it,” Rose said of his Bulls’ front office. “They gave it their all, we got who we could get, who wanted to come, and that’s who we have to ride with.

“I think this [Bulls team will be] the most talented team I’ve played on in my NBA career, to tell you the truth.”

And who knows if this current Bulls product is even finished?

Forman addressed the rumors Wednesday, admitting that “There’s always some talk. That’s our job. We’re always going to try to talk to people around the league and get a feel for what’s going on in the market and if there are opportunities, we’ll look at them. With that said, we really like the group we have and we look forward to getting going in October with that group.”

“I think he has been terrific,” Forman said of Rose’s week so far. “He looks strong.

He looks confident. He looks explosive.

Yet, Marshall, the Bears’ No. 1 receiver, told reporters Wednesday that he barely knows Cutler, the Bears’ $54 million quarterback, who Marshall joked should be known as “Joshua” moving forward because he’s so different from the old Jay. Marshall is so impressed with the new Jay, in fact, that he thinks Cutler can win the NFL’s MVP award this season. In addition to the luxury of playing in Marc Trestman’s offense with a loaded supporting cast, Cutler, Marshall believes, has become one of the hardest working Bears in the offseason, echoing what offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said earlier in the week.

“He’s a totally different person, totally different athlete,” Marshall said.

“He’s the first one in the building, and that [stinks] because I try to be the first one in the building. He’s there at like 5 a.m. He lives it. I think he has a great balance to his life now with his personal stuff. ... I love him, and I love catching balls, so let’s keep it.”

Specifically, Marshall has observed improved leadership from Cutler, which is helping the entire offense play with more confidence.

Space adventure ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is coolest summer movie

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” isn’t writer-director James Gunn’s first superhero movie. That would be the subversive, pitch-black indie “Super,” which was as violent as it was funny. He’s toned down the blood and mayhem a bit, but “Guardians” remains the coolest movie of the summer.

The story is sanitized and recycled, but Gunn infuses it with his off-kilter style and nerve, beginning with casting roly-poly sitcom star Chris Pratt (“Parks and Recreation”) as his Han Solo-like leading man. Pratt brings a newly chiseled physique and a mountain of charisma and goofiness to his star-turn as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, an interplanetary outlaw with a bounty on his head.

Pratt’s charm and presence go a long way to carry the film through a confusing first act bogged down in character introductions, back story and set-up. The plot is basic superhero tripe.

Quill, an orphan (he watched his

mother die in the pre-title sequence), joins forces with a gang of imprisoned superhero alien misfits in busting out of jail to recapture a powerful device called the Orb. But to keep it secure, they’ll need to defeat the nefarious Ronan (Lee Pace), an enforcer for the yet unseen Thanos. Not only do the guardians save the world from intergalactic annihilation, they evolve from reluctant allies who argue a lot to BFFs willing to die for each other.

In his best role ever, Vin Diesel provides the voice of the sentient tree-like being, Groot. The only line he ever says is, “I am Groot,” but he dazzles with the ability to rebuild himself. As the warrior assassin Gomora, Zoe Saldana (“Avatar”) trades blue makeup for a sexy green get-up and flashes a bit of personality for once. Professional wrestler Dave Bautista’s Drax is more hilarious, less dolt.

Bradley Cooper is unhinged, providing the voice for Rocket, the salty racoon-like creature who is the brains of the bunch.

Give him his own movie, but take cover if you call him “vermin” or “rodent.”

Also lending support are Djimon

Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker and Benicio Del Toro.

Gunn fires a lot at us – all in unnecessary 3-D, of course – but redeems himself with a twisted sense of humor, running gags and a soundtrack (it’s Quill’s late mom’s “Awesome Mix” tape) rich in ’70s hits, including “Come and Get Your Love,” “Cherry Bomb” and “Escape: The Pina Colada Song.”

There also are wacky references to John Stamos, Kevin Bacon, “Footloose” and the per-usual Stan Lee cameo.

The film references Quill’s father (cue the “Imperial March”), but never elaborates on that story line. Expect it to get explored more in the sequel, young Skywalker, which is due out July 2017.

Josh Brolin will play the supervillain Thanos.

• “Guardians of the Galaxy” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language. The cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Dave Bautista. Grade: B+.

Dear Abby: I’m a 21-year-old man who has been a successful swimmer in high school and now in college. Over the past few months, I have become obsessed with developing six-pack abs. I have never had much success with women, and I thought that looking like a movie star might finally get me noticed and make me feel good about myself.

Iodine, thyroid gland and how it all works Dear Doctor K: I cook with kosher salt, which doesn’t contain iodine. Am I getting enough iodine in my diet? Can I get iodine from other foods?

Dear Reader: Before I answer your question, I’ll need to explain a little about the thyroid gland and how it works. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that perches with its wings wrapped around the front of your windpipe, below your voice box. This gland influences the rate at which every cell, tissue and organ in your body functions. It does this primarily by secreting thyroid hormones.

Your thyroid needs fuel to produce thyroid hormones. This fuel is iodine. Many people think of iodine as a liquid that you put on a cut to help kill any germs. It is used that way, but it also has other medical uses.

Iodine is a natural part of our environment. It’s in seawater, rocks and other parts of our world. It gets into our body in various foods such as packaged breads and milk products. Shrimp and fish, such as cod and tuna, are also good food sources of iodine.

Iodine in foods gets absorbed into the bloodstream and carried

You asked about kosher salt.

Most table salt is “iodized”: It contains iodine. However, iodine is not found in kosher salt. So, if you use kosher salt only, could you cause yourself thyroid problems?

It’s a reasonable question, because iodine deficiency can lead to enlargement in the front of the throat, known as a goiter. Severe iodine deficiency can progress to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid cannot produce enough thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism can cause fatigue, constipation, weight gain, slowed heart rate and depression.

Iodine deficiency is generally not a problem in the United States. Many, if not most, Americans consume iodized salt. And food manufacturers add iodine to many commercial breads and milk products. Still, iodine consumption has declined considerably since the late 1970s.

The reason for the decline may have to do with changing eating habits. For example, many specialty salts, including kosher salt and sea salt, contain no iodine. Nor do fresh bakery breads.

Processed foods are high in salt, but most processed foods do not contain iodized salt.

On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve put a table showing the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for iodine for different age groups. You need to consume about 2 grams of iodized salt per day to meet the RDA for adults.

But only if you’re not consuming other food sources of iodine – and I’d bet that you are.

So, I think it’s unlikely that your use of kosher salt instead of the iodized salt most people sprinkle on their food will cause you any problems. If you are really concerned, ask your doctor. He or she can examine your thyroid gland to see if it is enlarged. Simple blood tests can tell if you have hypothyroidism.

Time to forgive and forget Dr. Wallace: Last spring I went to a friend’s party celebrating her 17th birthday.

I don’t drink alcohol, but at the insistence of another friend, I had a mixed alcoholic drink.

It was my first taste of booze. Unfortunately, I had two more mixed drinks and got tipsy.

I was still tipsy when I got home, and that caused my parents to go ballistic. I got the lecture of my life and was placed on three months’ restriction. That meant that I could not leave our house unless I was with a parent. The only exception was to attend school.

I’m off restriction now. I apologized for my miserable behavior and solemnly promised that I wouldn’t touch alcohol again until I’m 21 – if then. I am now 18.

My problem is that almost every day now, my parents (one or both) tell me how disappointed they are with me because I came home “drunk as a skunk.” I’m tired of hearing about being “an alcoholic.” I used to love and respect my mom and dad very much, but lately I don’t care to be around them and my love for them has turned to disgust.

I’ve never been in trouble at school or with the law; I get excellent grades and I’ve earned a partial scholarship at Ohio State University and will be attending OSU in September.

Before my “drunken stupor,” I was concerned about leaving home.

Now I’m thrilled to be getting out of my house.

How should declarer go after his tricks?

I suppose all bridge players could be called tricksters, even though some are more skillful at prestidigitation than others.

In this deal, South is trying to bring home nine tricks in no-trump. After West leads the diamond queen, what should declarer do? And suppose dummy’s hearts were A-Q-10. Would that change South’s plan?

After South opens two notrump, showing a balanced hand with a good 20 to a so-so 22 points, North is right not to use Stayman with 4-3-3-3 distribution and such weak spades. Even if South has four spades, it is unlikely that four spades would make and three no-trump fail. The reverse would be more probable.

South starts with six top tricks: one spade, three hearts and two diamonds. Obviously, declarer should try to collect three club winners – but how should he play the suit?

This is a great example of “lead up to honors.” South should plan to cross to dummy three times with a heart and to play a club toward his hand. Whenever East has the club ace or the suit splits 3-3, the contract will come home. Note that leading a club honor from hand leads to defeat with this layout.

If dummy’s hearts are A-Q-10, it is a much tougher problem.

If East has ace-fourth of clubs, South needs three heart entries, so should play a heart to the 10, hoping West has the jack. But that risks going down when clubs are 3-3. The odds of each line are almost equal – guess well.
