Locals show love for Blue Goose Market Social media re-energizes store campaign

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A call this summer to relaunch a yard sign campaign resulted in 155 Facebook likes, 508 shares and plenty of love for a longtime St. Charles business.

The yard sign in the campaign says “I [apple symbol] Blue Goose Market,” with the apple shaped like a heart.

The signs continue to sprout up all over the Tri-Cities to draw attention to the market, which is at 300 S. 2nd St., St. Charles.

Hundreds of signs had been picked up from the store this summer, said Paul Lencioni, president of the market.

“I love it – I’m honored, and I’m grateful,” Lencioni said of the support for the campaign. “It’s like throwing

He restarted the campaign when a child told Lencioni’s 6-year-old daughter, Raine, nobody likes Blue Goose Market while she was at a summer camp.

Lencioni said Raine handled the comment maturely, and he wrote an impassioned

Facebook post June 30 about how he left his corporate job in 2012 to come back to the store and improve things.

The market was established in 1928 by Lencioni’s great-grandmother.

Missing St. Charles Township man was found in Wisconsin

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The search for a missing elderly man ended Wednesday with news he was alive in Wisconsin.

“We just got a call about five minutes ago,” Bridget Wilson said mid-afternoon Wednesday. “He’s healthy.”

A search party composed of Jessie Ray Baty’s children, grandchildren and their friends checked various communities for the 79-year-old because they didn’t know

where he might have gone, Wilson said.

Baty left his residence in the Valley View area Jessie at about 3:30 Ray Baty p.m. Tuesday to go to a store about five minutes away, Wilson said, describing it as a regular trip for him.

He never made it to the store, she said.

She described it as a scary situation because the family

had no clues about his whereabouts and didn’t know how far he might have gotten.

In a Facebook post about Baty’s disappearance, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office indicated the man has some hearing loss and dementia.

Although Baty was driving, he had less than half a tank of gas, Wilson said, noting her mother usually fills the tank.

Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Collins confirmed Wednesday Baty was located in Wisconsin.

“The family is making arrangements to go get him,” he wrote in an email.

Macklin-Purdy had her 16-year-old son Jack, an employee of the store, pick up one of the market’s yard signs to put in front of their home.

“I think we need to support our local economy and local stores,” Macklin-Purdy said.

LESS THAN ACCOMMODATING The inability to focus sharply on objects positioned close to the eyes, known as “presbyopia,” is caused by age-related changes that compromise the ability of the eye lens to flex and change shape (called “accommodation”).

Impaired accommodation causes close objects to blur. The condition usually becomes noticeable around age 45, gradually progresses for about a decade, and then stabilizes.

Fortunately, presbyopia can always be corrected with prescription lenses, usually progressive lenses (glasses that provide clear vision for a range of distances), bifocals (glasses with lenses that correct near or distance vision), or single-vision lenses (glasses with lenses calibrated to correct near vision only). The type chosen depends on whether any other eye problems are present.

P.S. Drugstore reading glasses do not always correct for presbyopia sufficiently, especially in cases where each eye has a different focusing error.

Kane County leaders work to refine 2016 budget

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – About $3.1 million stands between the Kane County Board and a balanced 2016 budget.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick on Wednesday told the Finance and Budget Committee initial requests from the various departments and offices resulted in an overage of about $3.1 million in the general fund.

Committee Chairman John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said

he looks forward to continuing to refine the budget until it’s balanced. “[We] just need cooperation to get there,” Hoscheit said.

Overall, Onzick said, revenues are projected to remain flat with an increase of only $13,837, or a change of about 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, expenses total about $84.7 million, an increase of about $3.1 million – or 3.88 percent – from fiscal 2015, Onzick said.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said he is proud

of the effort everyone is putting into developing the budget.

“The budgeting process doesn’t get any more transparent than this,” he said after Onzick’s presentation.

The budget includes standard payroll and benefits increases, costs tied to mandates and personnel requests from the State’s Attorney’s Office and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is requesting six new positions, and Sheriff Donald

Kramer is requesting 10 new positions.

The sheriff’s office has the largest budget increase, Onzick said, showing the amended 2015 budget is about $24.7 million, and the submitted 2016 budget is about $27.7 million.

The proposed $3 million increase not only reflects new personnel but also the restoration of the funds the County Board cut this year to account for the forfeited revenue from the federal inmate program, Onzick said.

Other budget highlights included a $69,000 increase in the coroner’s budget, which exceeds a previous agreement with the County Board, Onzick said.

He said a compliance manager – a position eliminated this year – is built into the coroner’s 2016 budget. The overage could be eliminated by not restoring that position, he said.

Board members seemed to agree.

“The solution’s already on the table,” Lauzen said.

‘WE JUST LOVE EACH OTHER’

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With a friendship spanning 80 years, the girlfriends were all smiles, sitting next to each other in the kitchen of a Geneva home.

“I love her,” said Bette Holsman Fellicelli, 97, touching her friend’s arm. “I just followed her. … We are two pods in one pea. ... We never change; we just love each other.”

Flora Moretti Mytinger, 95, nodded that the feeling was mutual.

“She said she followed me, but notice she did all the talking,” Mytinger said, and they both chuckled. “We enjoyed everything the same.

We didn’t argue. We just had fun.”

Mytinger and Fellicelli met when in high school while living in Chicago and became forever friends, they said.

Each woman was in the other’s wedding. And when their husbands also became good friends, they all went on vacations together and visited through the years, they said.

The last time they saw each other was at the Mytingers’ 50th wedding anniversary party in California in 2000, but they lost touch after both becoming widows in 2002.

Mytinger went to live with her daughter, Paula Dufault, in California, and Fellicelli came to live with her son, Michael, and his wife, Sally, in Geneva.

“She always talks about Bette and memories,” Dufault said of her mother.

So she decided the girlfriends should see each other again and brought her mother to visit her friend on a recent weekend.

The girlfriends recalled they went to a lot of dances.

“She was a better dancer,” Fellicelli said, touching Mytinger’s shoulder. “I just

••• The girlfriends met in high school. Mytinger attended Waller High School, and Fellicelli went to a Catholic high school but transferred to Waller when her family could not afford it any longer, Dufault wrote in an email.

Mytinger was 15, and Fellicelli was 17 when they met in the same grade, because Mytinger had skipped two

grades, her daughter explained.

Although they were close as friends, they also had different experiences.

Mytinger’s father died when she was 20, and she went to work as a clerk in the Chicago Finance Office, where payroll checks were issued, she said.

Mytinger married her husband, Leroy, in 1950. Because he served in the Navy during

World War II, he stayed in after the war, and they were transferred to Newport, Rhode Island, she said.

Fellicelli never learned to drive. Mytinger said right after moving to Newport, her husband tossed the keys to a 1950 green Studebaker on the kitchen table.

“He said, ‘Here, you better learn to drive ’cause I’m leaving tomorrow,’ ” Mytinger said. “I looked in the yellow pages and found someone that was teaching how to drive: 10 lessons for $30. So I called them up – and my husband wasn’t even out of the harbor, and I was out on the road, learning how to drive.”

Longtime friends joyful at short reunion in Geneva Fellicelli was engaged to her husband, Joseph, for five years while he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They married in 1945.

Fellicelli’s parents came from Russia. They first lived in California, and then her father left to go to Chicago to look for work but did not come back. Fellicelli’s mother, who did not speak English, got on a train with their six children and traveled to Chicago to find him. “[My brothers] could speak English, but my mother couldn’t,” Fellicelli said.

“And she found him. I don’t know how she did it. He wasn’t trying to run away; he was just trying to get a job.”

Mytinger had four children and now has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Fellicelli had 10 children, and now has 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

The girlfriends also pointed out parallels in their lives.

Fellicelli is blind in her right eye since birth, and now Mytinger is blind in her left eye, the result of a bad cataract surgery and macular degeneration.

Both of their husbands were World War II veterans.

Both were married more than 50 years – Mytinger for 52 years and Fellicelli for 56 years. Both women also lost a son.

The girlfriends recently began writing to each other and pledged to keep it up after Mytinger returns to California.

Reflecting on their long friendship, the women said they care deeply for each other.

“It’s just being honest with each other – that’s important,” Mytinger said. “And you have to like the same things.”

“Ours is the best,” Fellicelli said. “It’s a gift from God. ... We might never see each other again, but I know I’ve seen her now.”

Tentative budget OK’d in Kaneland

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Kaneland School District 302 Board on Monday approved a tentative budget for the 201516 school year. Officials said the vote was unanimous.

Julie-Ann Fuchs, Kaneland’s associate superintendent, provided details and highlights. According to the budget presentation, the total tentative budget is $68.2 million. The total budget last year was $67.6 million, which later was amended to $66.7

million.

A public hearing and final vote on the budget is set for Sept. 14. Fuchs said she would present any necessary updates at the next board meeting, set for Aug. 31.

Among some of the budget highlights: • The operating revenues are expected to be $55.1 million, which is about a 3.6 percent increase, according to the presentation. The operating expenditures are expected to be $55.4 million, about a 2 percent increase.

• According to the presen-

tation, “while expenditures in the operating budget are projected to exceed revenues by approximately $275,000, there are several assumptions that are conservative in nature built into the budget.”

• Salaries for administration and support staff are projected to be up 2.5 percent. Salary increases for the teaching staff are unknown.

• Property taxes will make up 76 percent of revenue, with 18 percent from the state and 3 percent from the federal government, according to the presentation.

The 2015 National Night Out will be celebrated in Kane County next week through two separate events.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office will hold its event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on the southeast corner of Route 38 and Peck Road in St. Charles Township. The village of Campton Hills will hold its event from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday on School Street between Route 64 and LaFox Road in Campton Hills, according to a news release.

In its 32nd year, National Night Out promotes community spirit and police-community partnership, the release stated.

“This is a great opportunity for the Campton Hills community to meet members of the Campton Hills Police Department, as well as the local busi-

nesses and organizations who support us and serve the community,” Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman wrote in the release.

More than 25 organizations and local businesses will provide safety, health, environmental and community education at the Campton Hills event, in addition to a display of live animals. Free snacks and healthy food samples will be provided, the release stated.

The sheriff’s office event will include tours of the nearby shooting range and an inmate cell block. The Superior Air Ambulance also will be on site, and Ozzie T. Cougar, Princess Elsa from the Disney movie “Frozen” and McGruff the Crime Dog will be on hand to meet residents.

“Holy bat detector, Batman! There’s one about 50 feet away!”

No, this is not a line of Robin’s dialogue from the next Batman movie, but it could be the kind of thing one would hear at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Drive, St. Charles, on the night of Aug. 7, when Pam Otto, manager of programs and interpretive services at Hickory Knolls, discusses and demonstrates the logic, logistics and the lore lurking inside the life of bats.

A bat detector will, indeed, be in use when the program explores the early evening skies over the center. The device can take the not-discernible-by-humans sounds bats make and lower the

toes, they’d really prefer to be eating larger insects, such as moths and beetles.

“Bats expend too much energy to exist solely on a diet of little, tiny mosquitoes,” Otto said. “It’s much more efficient to eat a moth. Think about it: Yes, humans could eat a tiny pea, but it’s more satisfying to dine on a steak and potato.”

The “Backyard Bats” program starts inside Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, where Otto will talk about the various types of bats one could possibly find in one’s own backyard. There are typically about 11 or 12 species found in Illinois, but only four or five that can be spotted in Kane County.

One of the most common is the solitary bat, so named because of its preference for

“If you look at a bat’s skull – and we will in the program – you’ll see that bats have a full set of teeth perfect for catching and ripping and grinding and swallowing,” Otto said.

Echolocation may sound like a high-tech concept, but Otto will break it down into understandable terms using the decidedly low-tech method of throwing a tennis ball against a wall.

“This is a good way to demonstrate how sound would behave in a similar way to bats’ echolocation,” Otto said.

All ages are welcome at the program, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7. The program will be both indoors and outdoors at Hickory Knolls – outdoors to see these night-flying wonders in action.

It’s a family road trip In the exact moment I’m writing this, I’m with my family, driving on a highway. A highway, where I’m somewhere stuck in between an endless amount of vibrant green trees and land with twice as many hills as there ever will be in Illinois.

The four of us are cruising away as we drive from Batavia to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

A roughly nine-hour drive, without stops. Factor in the occasional stops along the way for quick gas replenishing, bathroom breaks, and soon those rest stop minutes eventually add up. Don’t forget the several much needed meal stops, specifically for rapidly scarfing down fast food. Basically, a nine-hour drive is an underestimate.

Some people cannot stand road trips, but growing up in my family, you get used to long vacation drives. I don’t mind them; they can be relaxing. There’s something so simplistic and calming about listening to music in the backseat while gazing out the window.

The entire drive to a vacation spot isn’t so bad as long as you plan wisely on what to bring. My road trip essentials normally consist of my iPod and white headphones, a book (that I never actually end up finishing), and a notebook and pen. How else do you think I’m writing this right now while in the middle of Nowhereville, Kentucky?

One of my favorite activities to pass the time while driving is to look out the car window and simply glance at the other cars passing by.

I enjoy reading the different license plates of the traveling vehicles. Whenever I see a rare license plate, like North Carolina or Georgia, for whatever reason I think it’s really cool to announce it to the rest of my family.

And I’m certainly right, as we end up wasting an hour in horrendous traffic because of road construction. They’re restriping the lines on the road. You would’ve thought there were five cars involved in a major accident.

This column is in more of a journal format this week, but hey, I’m on a nine-hour road trip, and this is a good way to occupy my time. The only thing that can make this writing experience via paper/pen better is if there is somehow a spell-check and word count magically helping me out as I write.

Driving down to Gatlinburg, I’m realizing a few things: 1. There are a whole lot of people driving Ford pickup trucks. 2. Country music is on every radio station.

3. I still don’t like a majority of country music.

One thing’s for sure.

When my family and I reach Gatlinburg, I cannot wait to just walk around and enjoy getting away for a few days. I went to this part of Tennessee many years ago when I was a kid. However, I barely recall any of what we did back then.

Oh, besides almost dying while horseback riding.

State-based answers to gun violence THE WASHINGTON POST One week after five U.S. military service members were killed in a mass shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a gunman opened fire July 23 in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, killing two people. Some five weeks earlier, a shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, left nine people dead. The question that inevitably arises from each event is how can we best keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.

Debate about this issue, which encouragingly is getting some attention on the presidential campaign trail, ought to be driven by evidence of what has proved to be effective.

In particular, attention should be paid to studies showing the efficacy of state permits for gun purchases.

Research by the Center for

Gun Policy and Research at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows state permitting systems reduce gun availability to dangerous people and prevent homicides, suicides and shootings of law enforcement officers.

One study released in June examined effects of a law implemented in Connecticut in 1995 requiring a license, contingent on passing a background check, to buy a handgun. Using sophisticated statistical modeling, researchers compared Connecticut’s homicide rates during the 10 years after the law’s implementation with the rates that would have been expected had the law not taken effect. The conclusion: a 40 percent reduction in the state’s firearm-related homicide rate. The study is the mirror-opposite of earlier research by the center that found Missouri’s 2007 repeal of its handgun permit-to-pur-

chase law was associated with a 25 percent increase in its firearm homicide rates.

Ten states and the District of Columbia have laws requiring permits for gun purchases and, according to center director and report author Daniel Webster, the strongest require the applicant to apply in person to local enforcement, which has access to more information and has discretion in granting the gun purchase permits. “Local police chiefs typically know more about the people in their community than does a national computer,” said David Hemenway, who headed a team from the Harvard School of Public Health that surveyed Massachusetts police chiefs.

It found applicants who would have passed the federal background check and were denied permits because of worrisome behavior, including arrests for violent offenses or making threats.

Jim Green to host CD release party in Geneva Wayne resident to perform as part of event

The Wayne resident will play from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at the Peck Farm Orientation Barn at 4038 Kaneville Road in Geneva as part of a CD release party for “True North.” Tickets can be purchased online for $20 at www. jimgreenmusic.com or for $25 the day of the show. The price of admission includes a copy of “True North,” a gift bag, food and refreshments.

From 1999 to 2013, Green recorded under the name The Wandering Endorphin.

“True North” is the first album Green has released since dropping that name, and it is his first all-instrumental album.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to interview Green about the new CD. Eric Schelkopf: I guess it’s appropriate that you are going to be releasing the CD at Peck Farm, because “True North” is a nature-inspired album.

Jim Green: I just thought that if I am going to throw a CD release party, I should go with that theme. I don’t feel like the songs are appropriate for most bar settings, where you might have a sports game on and guys rooting for their team.

That’s all great, but I’d rather be able to talk and play the songs and create some kind of mood with those songs than have all these distractions in a venue like a bar. I just thought I’d find a really quiet place where people can look at nature as I play.

Schelkopf: Why did you drop the name The Wandering Endorphine?

Green: It’s just easier for people to

Green: Yeah, actually there is. It’s a record that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but I really didn’t think I had the songs yet.

I’m known for my finger-style approach to playing the guitar. I love playing that style, and I just feel like these songs are more of where my heart is. remember the name Jim Green. I just had to do it.

Some people were quite upset that I dropped The Wandering Endorphine because they really liked it. They still want to call me that.

It just made sense to drop it, which is tough, because I’ve been promoting that name for a long time.

Schelkopf: Any meaning behind the album’s

Schelkopf: So, the record is more “true” to your heart. What about “North”?

Green: I guess I’m playing off the nature aspect of it.

Schelkopf: What do you like about the fingerstyle approach of playing the guitar?

Green: I like seeing people’s reactions.

I’m introducing something that they’ve never seen before.

To me, it’s very full sounding. I love

the aspect of how I can use all these different tunings.

You are just going exploring. It’s like you’re musically just exploring something.

It’s a great way to come up with new material, just change the tuning. You don’t get stuck in a rut.

Schelkopf: So, the style has allowed you to become more musically innovative?

Green: Yeah. I never thought I would be an instrumentalist. I always saw myself more as a singer-songwriter, and my focus was on lyrics and having a nice melody to sing with.

Schelkopf: Does it feel strange that the songs on the album are all instrumentals?

Green: No, not at all. I guess I’m confident enough in the songs.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to interview Oates about his career.

Eric Schelkopf: In 2006, a headline in Spin Magazine read: “Why Hall and Oates are the New Velvet Underground.” What do you think your musical influence has been?

John Oates: Although I like Velvet Underground, we have nothing to do with them in terms of attitude, musical sensibilities or anything like that at all.

We come from a totally different school of music and playing and thought. But that’s OK. What I am assuming they were trying to say is that we were – to a younger generation – hip and cool.

And if they were saying that back in 2006, you can magnify it now by about a thousand.

We have had an entire new audience. We have a young audience who have really gone deep into our album catalog. They love the ’80s stuff, but they are also into the music that we made in the ’70s.

It’s really cool to be able to play to a new, enthusiastic, young audience.

Schelkopf: So, that must be pretty refreshing, that you are playing to a new audience.

Did that kind of surprise you?

Oates: It happened incrementally over the last 10 years. It had to do a lot with Daryl’s TV show, “Live From Daryl’s House,” bringing in new audiences and getting exposure on television.

It also is about the solo work that I have been doing with a lot of young artists and collaborating with a lot of diverse musicians. All that stuff is just the sum total and result of us branch-

Schelkopf: Why do you think you and Daryl have collaborated so well together?

Oates: We’re very similar in a lot of ways. We’re both artistically-driven people, but our personal lives are completely separate from our music.

We’re kind of like brothers that live in different parts of the country. We see each other on stage and when we play together, and that’s great.

But we have our own lives and our own solo careers and projects.

The company’s work has been featured on the truTv show “Fake Off.” “It’s the marriage of musical theater

and Cirque du Soleil,” said Jennifer Ragan, producer/director of On the FLY Productions, in describing what the company does.

The Sept. 12 show will be the first time On the FLY Productions will perform “An Enchanted Evening” in front of an audience. Ragan said she is looking forward to the opportunity.

“Our passion [is] to create these new shows,” Ragan said. “This is the best research and development you can have, in front of a live audience.”

Batavia Fine Arts Centre manager Dominic Cattero said he is also excited about the possibility of being able to present an original show like “An En-

chanted Evening” to the community.

Laura Savage of Chicago, who has been involved in several productions at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, said she is looking forward to being part of “An Enchanted Evening.”

“It’s the first time I get to do actual tricks in the air,” Savage said.

To give Batavia drama students and area dance studios insight into what On the FLY Productions does, the company will be putting on flying and aerial workshops prior to the Sept. 12 performance.

VIKING SUMMER SUNSET 5K

Friendly rivalries fuel race Former Vikings focus on more than winning

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva grad Andrew Nelson wasn’t in the best shape of his life for last summer’s Viking Summer Sunset 5K. But a lot has changed since last year. Well, as far as the results go.

Nelson cruised to the men’s title in this year’s race, finishing in 15:46 and passing underneath the arch-like finish line over a minute faster than current Geneva runner Tyler Dau. The course took runners from the start on Gray Street in Geneva, and ended the 3.1 miles with most of a lap around the track at Geneva’s Burgess Field. A total of 332 competitors raced in the 5K, and competitors ages ranged from as young as eight to as old as 90-year-old Robert McKeague of Villa Park.

Nelson’s nearest competitor, Dau (16:49), was just reaching track surface when Nelson finished his race.

But why would Nelson celebrate?

There were still friends racing. As he did last year, he gave a couple high fives, caught his breath briefly, and ran to the other end of the turf inside the track to cheer on not only Dau, but many other racers.

“I try to get out here as often as I can,” Nelson said. “Probably the biggest enjoyment in getting out here is running with people you know and help each other continue to run. It’s my passion – running is – and anything I can do to help out or be a part of it is what I want to be doing.”

The 24-year-old Nelson saw his friendly rivalry with last year’s men’s champion in Mike Bianchina come to a pause, as Bianchina was not able to make it back from Bradley University for this year’s race. Another friendly rivalry took place in this year’s 5K – one of the races of the 18th annual Viking Summer Sunset races hosted by the Fox River Trail Runners group.

It was Geneva grad Tess Ehrhardt, who took home the women’s title with a time of 18:02, and her former track coach, Peter Raak.

But what probably brought the biggest smile to Ehrhardt’s face, aside from her 16-year-old sister Emma finishing 3rd (19:14) was the miniature rivalry with Raak.

“I was trying to catch [coach Raak], who is kind of out of shape,” Tess Ehrhardt joked. “I didn’t get him, but that’s alright. It definitely made things fun because Emma ran it. It’s a fun race and you know a lot of the people here, so it’s cool to be back and run on your old stomping grounds.”

Raak, who finished three seconds ahead of Ehrhardt in 17:59, knew

Ehrhardt was behind him. He knew he had to maintain his pace ahead of Ehrhardt unless he wanted to hear about it for quite a while.

“She was hesitant to run today and we convinced her,” Raak said. “I definitely snuck a few peeks and turned my head a few times. I was getting tired at the end and I could hear people cheering for her, but I was able to hold her off.”

But Raak was elated to see how several runners he saw go through Geneva have continued to pursue running whether it be in college or setting personal goals outside competitive running.

He said that Nelson wanted to help Bianchina succeed moreso than win last year’s 5K.

“I think Andrew sacrificed his race for Mike’s benefit last year,” Raak said. “That’s what this sport of running is all about. You give each other hugs, are in the same group and you want to see each other succeed.

It’s a rare kind of thing that we love to be a part of.”

Nelson has focused on his mile run this summer, setting a personal record of 4:03, but still has aspirations to break the 4-minute mark.

Other races included the Jamie LaForce Youth Mile, which saw last year’s third-place finisher, Geneva’s Lucas Hipp, take the title with a 6:33 mile. The Toddler Trot had another great showing; whether athletes crossed the finish line or cried trying, it was more than a sight to see.

Lally named to MVFC Preseason Team

T.J. Lally, a Marmion grad from St. Charles, was recently named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference Preseason Team.

The 6-foot, 225-pound Lally is heading into his senior season with South Dakota State, and third season as the team’s starting middle linebacker. He led the Jackrabbits with 117 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss last season.

Lally was the 2010 Kane County Chronicle Football Player of the Year.

Deep Western Amateur at RHF offers stern test QUICK READ Kevin Druley The world’s top 156 amateur men’s golfers will descend on Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove for next week’s Western Amateur, a five-day gantlet mixing stroke play and match play.

The prestigious event is just the latest to come to owner Jerry Rich’s course, whose idea phase launched decades ago, Jerry Rich when Rich conceptualized golf courses growing up as a caddy at Butterfield Country Club.

“I just fell in love with the way green complexes were put together and the bunkering, and what have you,” Rich said. “I don’t know why as a kid, but I just had an interest in it.”

These days, golf’s up-andcoming set have designs on conquering the layout as best they can.

Among the Illinoisans in the field are Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, a Texas standout who was the stroke play medalist in the 2014 Western Amateur.

“The Western Amateur is one of the hardest tournaments to win in any kind of level of competition in golf,” Ghim said. “The format, the depth of the field. It’s so difficult to win. Two different formats, stroke play and match play. The combination is incredible.”

Four rounds of stroke play contested from Tuesday to Thursday will trim the field to the low 16. On Friday, the first two rounds of a match play tournament are held before the match play semifinals and championship are completed Aug. 8.

If the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) happened to be competing near Cubs spring training in Mesa, Arizona, Poffo wasn’t shy about visiting.

Batting practice, however, wasn’t in the cards.

“I think by then he was too big,” said longtime former Cubs trainer Tony Garofalo, who roomed with Poffo when both were in

the St. Louis Cardinals organization. “He probably couldn’t have got the bat around. He really bulked up.”

Poffo could, however, still make his presence felt at a diamond, including when he performed “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at a Cubs game in 1999.

“That was a big thrill for him,” said Poffo’s brother, Lanny, a fellow former professional wrestler. “He was almost as good a singer as Mike Ditka.”

Slamans benefits from WIU redshirt

Tyler Slamans could have put his head down after getting word that he would redshirt his freshman football season at Western Illinois.

But he turned it into a positive. He got to learn more about the game of football mentally and build his strength and conditioning to be a better allaround player.

With his first college Tyler Slamans season in his sights this fall, Slamans, a Kaneland grad, enters the season as the team’s No. 2 tight end.

“It was extremely beneficial for me,” Slamans said of the redshirt. “I learned so much more about the game itself and the X’s and O’s of the game. I got to watch the guys at my position and at that level of competition. But most importantly, I grew both mentally and physically as a football player.”

Slamans entered his freshman year with two experienced tight ends ahead of him on the depth chart, so losing a year of eligibility while on the sidelines did not seem to make sense to the WIU coaching staff.

The Leathernecks got news this spring that one of the team’s senior tight ends tore his ACL, moving the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Slamans into the No. 2 spot.

Slamans said most of the spring and summer practices had him see the field quite a bit. With a spread offense often implemented in WIU’s attack, Slamans is optimistic about his regular season playing time.

“We run a bunch of different sets out of our spread,” Slamans said. “Sometimes there’s four wide receivers and one tight end, or sometimes two or maybe even three tight ends.

So there’s definitely some opportunity for tight ends to see the field in our offense.”

But seeing the field will not just be handed to Slamans.

Summer workouts have tested him both mentally and physi-

cally, which brings him back to his redshirt and building his strength while not being able to participate in games.

Slamans said he can have up to three separate “intense” workouts a day, but, in the end, it’s going to lead him to where he wants to be.

“It’s totally worth it,” Slamans said. “We have workouts as early as 6:30 a.m. and lift up to four times a week. We also have speed and conditioning another three times a week.

Then there’s practices that focus on individual skills as well as 7-on-7s, so there’s a lot that goes into a day at times, but I know this is what it’s going to take to see the field.”

At the moment, a six-day break is in order for Slamans and his Leatherneck teammates. Slamans is back in Sugar Grove before heading back to the Macomb-based campus for fall camp.

After being at school for most of June and July, with one summer class required for football players, Slamans said it’s nice to have a little break before getting into the full swing of the season.

Western Illinois has what Slamans called one of the toughest schedules in the NCAA Division-I Football Championship Subdivision, or FCS, which includes a trip to Champaign to face the Fighting Illini.

“I’m really excited to get out there,” Slamans said. “It’s a whole different level of competition that I’ve never gone up against. We play the toughest schedule in the country and are all excited for the game at U of I, so I’m really looking forward to getting the chance to be out there.”

But Slamans also said that fall practice will dictate quite a bit, so regardless of what the depth chart looks like at this point, the tight ends who see the field will earn their spot in the coming weeks.

When all is said and done and WIU takes the field for its season opener, at home, on Sept. 9 against Eastern Illinois, Slamans believes he has put himself in strong contention to represent the Leathernecks in his No. 45 purple and yellow jersey.

Most of them have little monetary value. But imagine my surprise when I spotted some of my missing seashell collection in her fish tank!

Naturally, I can’t accuse her of taking things like seashells that anyone can pick up free on the beach, but I select ones with distinct markings, which is why I know they are mine. It’s frustrating to run out of toothpaste and find that the spare tube I just bought is missing. It’s not like she doesn’t have the money to buy her own.

Active surveillance best option for small prostate cancer Dear Doctor K: After an abnormal PSA test and biopsy, I have been diagnosed with early-stage, non-aggressive, prostate cancer.

My doctor advised active surveillance. What does this mean?

Dear Reader: Prostate cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the prostate.

This walnut-sized gland sits below the bladder, in front of the rectum, near the base of the penis.

Prostate cancer is common, but it is not always dangerous.

People are often surprised to hear “cancer” and “not dangerous” in the same sentence.

But these days, many prostate cancers are discovered through screening. Some of them will not grow, spread and become serious medical problems.

Of course, some of them are serious. When deciding on a course of treatment, your doctor must first determine whether your cancer is life-threatening.

Why not just treat any prostate cancer once it is diagnosed?

Because treatment comes with its own risks, including erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. And neither you nor your doctor wants you to have a treatment if it is worse than the disease.

Indeed, some men need no

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff treatment – for example, older men with other serious and life-threatening health issues, or men with slowly progressing early-stage cancer. Other men, say younger men with aggressive cancer, require treatment.

But today, a significant number of men fall into a gray area, where the decision of whether to treat isn’t clear-cut.

Like you, these men have tumors that are so small and apparently slow-growing that they meet the criteria for active surveillance.

This strategy used to be called “watchful waiting.” It involves monitoring the cancer closely and beginning treatment when and if it advances or becomes more aggressive.

At a minimum, close monitoring means digital rectal exams (DREs) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests every four to 12 months. Biopsies should be done every one to three years.

Without regular monitoring, you run the risk that the cancer will grow and spread, making it much more difficult to treat. If

PSA readings increase sharply, or if the doctor feels a new lump during a DRE, it may be time to start treatment. A change in urinary habits (needing to go urgently, or not being able to go, for example) can also signal that it’s time for active therapy.

Many of my patients have asked me the question you’ve asked. It’s hard to understand that not all cancers are bad for your health, and that some cancers are destined to never grow, spread and cause trouble. Or that the doctor cannot tell with perfect accuracy what the risk is that a cancer will be a “bad one” that will grow and spread, unless it is treated.

We just haven’t yet been clever enough to develop a perfect test for estimating that risk. But we have learned enough to know if a person is in the “gray area,” where active surveillance is the most sensible approach. If I were diagnosed with a prostate cancer that put me in that gray area, my choice would be active surveillance.

Why do guys like younger girls?

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and met a really sweet guy at a San Francisco Giants baseball game.

I gave him my phone number when he asked for it and we went out three times. On our last date he asked me how old I was and I told him.

When I asked his age, he said he was 19.

Yesterday, our mutual friend called and said she heard through the grapevine that I was dating Kurt. She then warned me that he always tries to date younger girls and that he is actually 24. She advised me to stop dating him. I said I would.

In today’s deal, North redoubled to show 10-plus points with fewer than four spades. After West ran to two clubs, North rebid three spades to show game-forcing values with exactly three-card spade support. Now South used Blackwood before bidding seven spades.

West led the heart king. How should South have planned the play?

Note that over North’s redouble, South did not need to do anything – one spade redoubled was game, and overtricks would have been worth 400 points each.

South starts with 12 top tricks: seven spades, one heart, one diamond and three clubs. He has to do something with his club three.

It looks easy to draw trumps and ruff that low club in the dummy. But when South sees the 3-0 spade break, he must immediately turn to clubs.

He cashes his club ace-king and ruffs the club three with dummy’s spade ace – as long as he was careful to start trumps with a winner from his hand, not the ace on the board.

Note that if declarer cashes dummy’s spade ace at trick two, he goes down because East overruffs the dummy.

Throughout my house, there are touches of equine just about everywhere: a photo of a powerful stallion galloping through water in my bedroom, a wooden sculpture of a horse on the living-room mantel, even a whimsical bench with four hooves. 2. Collect books that tell your story. I have been collecting coffee table books for years. Family and friends have caught on, and many of them have given me some of my favorites. These books, sprinkled throughout, serve as a constant reminder of my interests

and passions: art, fashion and design. Whether your interests are space or watchmaking, start collecting books that you display to infuse your home with what you love most.

3. Create an opening statement. I love a good conversation starter and wanted a space that was anything but boring.

The graphic wallpapered dining room is the first thing you see when you enter our house. You immediately have a glimpse into my personality.

4. Show your own style of hospitality. Food is something everyone relates to. I have a notorious sweet tooth, so friends know that when they come over there will always be a giant bowl of M&Ms out. I always know which friends walk by without a blink, and those who can’t resist.

5. Honor history. Pieces of our family histories are sprinkled throughout the house. My favorite is a large gold goat that used to live in my foyer growing up.

RE/MAX associates in northern Illinois were the most widely recognized among Illinois real estate brokers in the 2015 “America’s Best Real Estate Agents” rankings, compiled by REAL Trends – a real estate industry publication. The latest edition of the “America’s Best” list was recently published, according to a news release.

RE/MAX individual brokers and sales teams in northern Illinois held 129 of the 563 spots in the Illinois rankings, or 23 percent of the total. RE/MAX brokers in other areas of the state captured 38 spots, bringing the RE/MAX total to 167 or 30 percent, the release states.

The Illinois rankings for closed transactions included only those teams that closed 75 or more transactions or at least $30 million in sales volume, the release states.
