Burd, Wheeler competing for 50th District seat

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Property taxes and job creation are two of the top issues in the race for who will succeed retiring state legislator Kay Hatcher in the Illinois House of Representatives.

Former Yorkville Mayor Valerie Burd, a Democrat, is running against Republican and small business owner Keith Wheeler of Oswego for the seat in the Nov. 4 general election. Hatcher, R-Yorkville, has served the 50th District since 2009.

The 50th District covers much of southwest Kane County and northern Kendall County, including Sugar Grove, Elburn, Campton Hills and Yorkville, as well as

portions of St. Charles, Batavia, North Aurora, Aurora, Montgomery and Oswego.

Burd, 67, recently kicked off her “Walking Around the 50th” campaign at a Campton Hills Village Board meeting. If elected, Burd said she would strive to make the property tax system more fair.

“It’s not an equitable tax,” Burd said. “It just isn’t. It doesn’t take into account peo-

ple’s incomes. I understand about people trying to retire on the money that they have saved up, and the property taxes keep going up and up, and they can’t stay in their homes. They have to leave and go to a place where the property taxes are much less.”

Burd said school funding also needs to be examined.

“Education is 60 percent of the property taxes in Yorkville,” Burd said. “That doesn’t mean that I don’t think there should be local control of education. But I think education is the focus of maybe the property tax problem.”

Wheeler, 47, said he also has been out talking to people in the 50th District.

“There’s a lot of unhappiness with the status quo in Springfield,” Wheeler said.

“Sometimes it’s just letting people vent for a few minutes about what they are upset about. It’s a myriad of things, from pensions to education.

People want something different. They want some action.”

One of Wheeler’s top goals, if elected, is to help create more jobs in Illinois. He is a small business owner.

“Springfield is making it more difficult to be in business in Illinois, which makes it more difficult to hire people,” Wheeler said. “I have a different background than most because I’ve dealt with that as an employer for the last 22 years.”

Aurora woman ticketed after two-car crash

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com An 18-year-old Aurora woman received a citation after she was involved in a two-car crash Saturday north of Sugar Grove village limits, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

1300 block of Post Road in Aurora, was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign on Scott Road at Harter Road, Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler wrote in an email.

$4.6M in capital improvements proposed for county facilities

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – More than $4 million might be invested in Kane County’s facilities next year.

The $4.6 million in proposed capital improvements include about two dozen high priority projects, such as a swipe-card access system for the coroner’s facility, HVAC upgrades at the jail and judicial center, and insulation at the animal control building.

“That building is freezing year-round,” operations staff executive Don Biggs told the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday.

Of the total proposed budget, about $3.298 million is for facility capital improvements; nearly $150,000 is for vehicle replacements or additions; $863,400 is for information technology; and $300,000 is for contingency funds.

Biggs presented the 2015

budget as part of a five-year plan. Future budgets are estimated at about $1.4 million in 2016, $1.9 million in 2017, $4.6 million in 2018 and $1.4 million in 2019.

He also included estimated costs for a new wing to the justice center ($80 million), a justice campus parking garage ($21 million) and a new coroner building ($2.4 million).

Costs for a new diagnostic center are unknown. That department provides comprehensive forensic psychology services to the 16th Judicial Circuit.

Director Alexandra Tsang told the committee there are safety concerns regarding the

existing facility along Fabyan Parkway, where the sheriff’s office used to be.

“We are pretty isolated,” she said.

Issues include flooding, poor water quality, carbon monoxide poisoning, a lack of security and no nearby public transportation, Tsang said, noting a client walked to the facility last week from a Randall Road bus stop.

County Board member Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, said the county shouldn’t put its employees in harm’s way.

“We need to think about moving them elsewhere,” she said.

Road did not have a stop sign, according to the report.

She and the other woman were taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora for minor injuries, said Josh Lopez, a Sugar Grove battalion fire chief, on Saturday.

“Both cars were damaged on the front driver’s side,” Lopez had said.

The vehicles were towed from the scene, and there was more than $1,500 in estimated damages to any one person’s vehicle or property in the crash, according to the report.

Sugar Grove police assisted with traffic control after the crash, Sugar Grove Police Chief Pat Rollins said.

THE FIGHT TO STOP BULLYING State law says districts must have policies

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Renee Dee has worked to try to produce smiles and acts of kindness in the Kaneland area. She is the founder of PEAK for Kids, the host of the Kindness Campaign and has helped spread a growing message in the community – Be nice. Be happy.

But she said it’s important to remember that the movement’s roots stem from an incident in which charges were filed against students in a case involving a classmate. The Sugar Grove resident said it is vital that progress continue to be made so such incidents never happen again.

Gov. Pat Quinn recently signed legislation amending the school code on bullying prevention, but local school districts say they already are doing much of what the action requires. They already have policies on bullying.

They collect data. They have definitions of bullying and a system to deal with such incidents, they said.

In Kaneland School District 302, Superintendent Jeff Schuler said his first impression is that “it is a reminder of things that we are doing but need to continue to do.”

In Batavia School District 101, Chief Academic Officer Brad Newkirk said the district has taken “a proactive approach to bullying and bul-

The Husky professor called Colburn’s plan to pass out buckwheat seeds a “valuable approach.” Sims recognized that while buckwheat seeds will not solve the decline in bee population, he said planting the seeds would provide refuge for local bee populations.

Colburn said ultimately he wants people to enjoy his restaurant and receive nourishment of the body and soul and understand that bees play an important part in pollinating produce that he serves. It is important to preserve what Mother Nature has given us, Colburn said.

What an “incredible thing that nature does to provide us all this product,” Colburn said. “These great [natural] products … that’s what [makes Preservation] successful.”

Batavia residents voice opposition to proposed industrial park Planned for land at Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass

“It will change and degrade the character of Batavia from a neighborhood feel to an industrial feel,” said resident Dan Pepin, in address-

ing aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting. Pepin is a member of a group called Keep Batavia Neighborhoods, which is opposed to the proposed industrial park.

Batavia aldermen plan to discuss the proposed development at an Aug. 19 Joint Committee of the Whole meeting.

Plan commissioners in April voted, 4-3, to recommend amending the city’s comprehensive plan and zoning map to allow for an indus-

trial park on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses. The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. City officials in 2005 annexed the property.

The development originally proposed for the property included residential zoning on the eastern 36 acres, with 242 town houses proposed.

The western 20 acres was to be zoned general commercial.

Group now proposes to build two large industrial buildings on the entire 56-acre property.

Keep Batavia Neighborhoods has started a website, www.keepbatavianeighborhoods.com, and has posted signs along Kirk Road in opposition to the proposal. Among other issues, the group is concerned about the additional truck traffic the proposed industrial park would generate and its impact on the surrounding area, including Kirk Road.

“Kirk Road has become overcrowded and dangerous

again,” said Chris Virelli, another member of Keep Batavia Neighborhoods. “Please consider the ramifications of your decisions.”

Keep Batavia Neighborhoods member Dennis Merritt has made an offer to purchase the Prairie Commons property. Merritt has been in the real estate business for 30 years.

His proposal calls for 242 town houses to be built on the land, which is what originally was proposed.

“There is another offer on the table,” Merritt told aldermen.

GENEVA – People need to stop and understand the chain of events that occurs in nature before sitting down and enjoying a meal, Lawrence Colburn said.

Colburn opened Preservation Bread & Wine in downtown Geneva four years ago, and he said the name describes his restaurant’s philosophy.

He said Preservation has an “old-world” feel that gives customers an intimate experience with friends and family.

For Colburn, human and ecological intimacy are equally important. While the lack of TVs in the restaurant might force guests to look at each other, Colburn said he wants people to “experience being part of your food.”

Colburn has decided to connect full circle with the ecological processes that support his restaurant by passing out 400 packets of buckwheat seeds starting Thursday and continuing until they run out.

The former sommelier explained that honeybees and buckwheat have a symbiotic relationship and are paramount to supporting the food chain and product he serves.

He said he hopes customers will plant the seeds and help the honeybee populations that have been struggling across the country.

In Geneva School District 304, there were anti-bullying videos created by choir members at Geneva Middle School South and North.

In Kaneland, Kindness in Kaneland Week was celebrated.

In St. Charles, Schlomann said the legislation can provide some more clarity.

He said the district works to identify bullying, and “we take it seriously and try to investigate.” Sometimes, he said, it can be a misunderstanding, but often, it is bullying.

And there also is the matter of bullying in cyberspace, “and we are charged also to deal with that.”

In Batavia, Newkirk said that there are efforts made to be sure procedures are in

place and to be sure the district is in compliance with the new law.

He talked of the district’s PBIS system, which stands for positive behavior intervention system. And he said the district is aware that bullying instances do occur.

Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, was one of the bill’s House sponsors.

She said that if school districts already are in compliance with the law, “that’s great.” She said it was put into place because not all school districts have a bully policy in place with a restorative antidote.

••• Despite such efforts, there is controversy when it comes to bullying. District 303 saw two lawsuits alleging bullying filed in 2013 and 2014.

In Kaneland, the Kindness Campaign movement gained strength last year, but in 2012, a group called Knights Against Bullying packed a

school board meeting and demanded change after saying bullying allegations had gone unresolved and that situations were continuing.

Soon after the Knights Against Bullying meeting, a task force on bullying was formed in the Kaneland district, including one community member – Leigh Ann Reusche, who was with Knights Against Bullying. She is the director of the Kindness Campaign.

But the task force no longer is in existence. Dee said that is disappointing, and a community voice is needed.

Schuler said the future of the task force was not clear. He said such work has “really shifted to our internal groups that are working to implement that.”

“We would reconvene the task force if a need existed,” Schuler said, adding that the task force “wasn’t a response necessarily to community feedback.”

OBITUARIES MARTHA JANE CUMBLAD Born: May 9, 1920; in Monmouth, IL Died: July 27, 2014; in Markesan, WI Martha Jane Cumblad, age 94, of Markesan, WI, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Markesan Resident Home with her family by her side.

Martha was born May 9, 1920, in Monmouth IL, the daughter of John and Minnie (Hansen) Whitman.

She graduated from Alexis High School and went on to further her education, earning her BS from the University of Iowa and subsequently graduated from the University of Iowa School of Nursing.

In 1948, Martha married Fredrick A. Cumblad. She worked at the University of Minnesota and Texas Hospitals as an RN and also at Delnor Hospital in St. Charles, IL. Martha was an RN for over 40 years. She was an avid gardener, bird watcher, and was known to all as a kind, gentle, and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ripon.

Survivors include her children, Kent (Beth) Cumblad of Columbus, WI, Keith (Carla) Cumblad of St. Charles, IL and Karl (Karen) Cumblad of Waukesha, WI; eight grandchildren, Cari (Shawn) Coyle of Columbus, WI, Jon Cumblad of Chicago, IL, Nick Cumblad of Oregon, WI, Matt Cumblad of Oregon, WI, Alex Cumblad of St. Charles, IL, Austin (Liz) Cumblad of Minneapolis, MN, Ethan Cumblad of Oregon, WI, Krista Cumblad of Madison, WI and three great-grandchildren, Sarah and Samuel Zittel of Columbus, WI and Makenna Cumblad of Lake Mills, WI and sister and brother-in-law, Melicent and Roger Hansen of Rockford, IL. She was further survived by many nieces and nephews.

Third Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg asked what Fire Chief Steve Olson does during his shift.

“You can understand a battalion chief is for those shifts when the chief is not present,” Kilburg said. “What does the chief do during his shift? In other words, if you’re there during the day – and this was a question I was asked and I couldn’t answer it – you already have an administrator in charge at the station.”

Olson said the department has three people working 40 hours.

“Currently what happens is – and has happened the last 25 to 30 years – if there is a call … whatever we are doing at

our desk or whatever we are doing, we drop it and respond to it,” Olson said.

“So now the work we’re supposed to get done on a daily basis is delayed,” Olson said.

“When this happens repeatedly throughout the day, it’s very choppy, very inefficient and it’s become much more of an issue as we become a busi-

Olson said battalion chiefs would be in charge of day-today operations, allowing him to complete his workload.

Olson said he would still be on call when a battalion chief has scheduled time off or is ill.

Part of the impetus for the reorganization was a recommendation to evaluate hiring a battalion chief to assist with supervision and administrative functions, which was made during a site accreditation visit in 2006, officials said.

And during the Vorhees and Associates staffing analysis in 2012, consultants also recommended funding a battalion chief.

GENEVA – The Geneva Fire Department will undergo a reorganization once one of its two deputy chiefs retires in November, officials said.

Aldermen acting as the committee of the whole this week approved creating two more positions of battalion chief to assist with supervision and administrative functions. One position already had been created in 2005, but it was never staffed, officials said.

Each battalion chief position would be filled by current fire lieutenants, one for each 24-hour shift.

The deputy chief for fire prevention would be eliminated and replaced by the position of fire marshal to plan, organize and manage the fire prevention division, officials said.

Three firefighter positions then would become vacant, filled only once it’s financially possible, officials said.

The reorganization would cost $60,000 for the current fiscal year, City Administrator Mary McKittrick said.

“We’re actually adding two new positions … [because] one of those positions we already had – we just had it vacant for several years because of budget cuts,” McKittrick said. “Adding two new people is what it would entail eventually, if the budget allows.”

In future years, the extra cost of the increase in staff would be $265,000 annually, officials said.

The battalion chiefs’ salaries will range from $84,457 to $120,214, and the fire marshal’s salary will range from $78,283 to $111,461. Their actual salaries will depend upon their current salary. Officials will follow the rules for promotion set out in the Personnel Policy Manual, Assistant City Administrator Stephanie Dawkins wrote in an email.

The battalion chiefs will be selected through a promotional process by the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners, with any current lieutenant eligible to compete, Dawkins said.

Officials anticipate that firefighter Phil Affrunti will move into the fire marshal position, Dawkins said.

Kaneland budget battle over possible fund transfers

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Kaneland School District 302 Board tentatively approved a $66.5 million budget for the 2014-15 school year this week – but not without criticism from a board member.

The budget includes a $3 million deficit in its education fund, which officials hope will be reduced with reserves by the time the budget gets final approv- Tony Valente al in September.

One of the options the district could use to reduce the deficit in the education fund is a $1.9 Jeff Schuler million fund transfer from its transportation fund surplus – which prompted board member Tony Valente’s objection.

Valente said the move is not technically illegal, but it is not correct for the school board to do it.

“The government allows a one-time transfer once a year from one fund’s surplus to another area where you may need it,” Valente said. “They have no intention to use it in the transportation fund. They took no action last night, but their intention is to transfer it.”

Valente said it is wrong for the district to over-tax

or over-levy intentionally in one fund. He said the intent of the law is to allow a transfer when money is left over.

“It [state law] does not tell you to lie about what you need, which is what we’re doing when we’re transferring millions of dollars over,” Valente said. “The people I represent, I don’t think they would think that’s OK.” Superintendent Jeff Schuler said the tentative spending plan is a deficit budget – its overall deficit at $870,000.

“It is not a balanced budget overall,” Schuler said.

“We did present to the board a deficit budget this year.

When you look at the four operating funds together, when you look at the total expenses and revenues, it is not balanced … but we anticipate that gap likely closing a little bit between the tentative and final budget.”

Schuler said the education fund is at its tax cap limit.

He said transferring surplus from the transportation fund is an option that was discussed this week but not acted upon.

“The board is not anticipating any kind of budget transfer,” Schuler said. “The board could do it but is not planning on it. It was part of the conversation, not part of the formal recommendation.”

He said the board could decide to make the transfer in September when the final budget is approved or make a transfer any time during the school year, if it becomes necessary.

“Mr. Valente is entitled to his opinion about that prac-

tice,” Schuler said. “It is certainly a permissible practice.

When we present it to the community, we are very upfront.”

Schuler said what Valente suggests to do is cut $3 million from the education fund.

“That is not the direction the board [majority] would like to go,” Schuler said. “It would have a devastating impact on the quality of our education.”

Valente said he did not support cutting $3 million at once.

“My solution was, over time, to project where they will be,” Valente said. “What good administrators do is they project the EAV [equalized assessed valuation] and then make slight adjustments as you go through, so it is a lot less impacting at one time.

You can save the money, if you can watch the spending.”

Valente said it was clear to him the board intended to transfer funds from the transportation fund to the education fund but did not do it this week. He said the board majority will do it once public attention wanes.

“One of the reasons I’m so adamant is that home values are stagnant, and our test scores are mediocre,” Valente said. “At one point, my house was worth $400,000, and now it’s worth $250,000.

That’s the difference. If we were a top-notch district with top-notch scores, I would not be yelling as loud.”

Valente was principal at Kaneland High School, but left in 2009 to be a principal in another district.

Anderson talks jobs, shaking up Congress at Elburn town hall 15 ELBURN – Dennis Anderson, the Democratic challenger for the 14th Congressional District seat, on Tuesday met with a small but engaged group of people during a town hall stop in Elburn.

For 90 minutes Anderson of Gurnee listened to 14 Kane County residents and answered their questions at Dennis the Town & Anderson Country Public Library, 320 E. North St., in Elburn. The meeting was part of Anderson’s larger town hall meeting tour that was last in the area in June in St. Charles.

Anderson said.

Carol Green of Elburn identified with Anderson’s comment about common needs and wants among residents during the town hall meeting.

This was the first time she was able to see Anderson speak in person and she plans to vote for him in the November election.

Green said incumbent U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, has not done anything in his two terms that would positively affect her. She said that his efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act would have a negative impact on her and her husband.

“I would love to have some debates, but there are none scheduled at present,” Anderson said.

Anderson said he wanted to hold town hall meetings across the 14th District so he could have public, in-person exchanges with various residents. He mentioned twice during the event that he’s running to represent everyone in the district.

“I’m running because I don’t think Congress is representing anybody right now,” Anderson said during the town hall. “We need to have someone who’s willing to engage in meaningful discussions.”

Fighting the Ebola epidemic requires a pan-African team BLOOMBERG NEWS There’s a reason Ebola generates more terror than most viral illnesses: Doctors have no cure, and as many as 9 in 10 of its victims die. The only silver lining is that outbreaks have been readily contained.

Sadly, the new epidemic in Africa is another story. It has killed more than 650 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and shows no sign of abating. Last week, Sierra Leone’s top Ebola doctor became infected with the virus, and the first case was reported in Lagos, the continent’s biggest city. Doctors Without Borders

has declared this outbreak to be “out of control.”

Until now, health professionals have stopped Ebola’s spread by isolating the sick, caring for them using protective gear, monitoring contact and educating communities on the way the disease spreads (through human-to-human contact with infected bodily fluids).

Because Ebola kills almost all its victims quickly and has occurred mostly in remote villages, it has never plagued humans in countries outside Africa. That risk remains small but real given that the disease has spread for the first

time to capital cities, all three with airports offering international flights.

Infected people, lacking understanding of how Ebola is transmitted and fearing the stigma attached to it, have run away or been hidden by their families rather than going to treatment centers. And the bereaved have continued their custom of washing and touching the dead, which can spread the virus.

Western African countries, however, have had no experience with Ebola. Their governments were slow to acknowledge the severity of the threat. Sierra Leone even took

a step backward by officially counting only cases confirmed by lab tests, which are unavailable in remote areas.

Dealing with Ebola patients is not a job for novices, given that one mistake can mean death for the caregiver. Yet even with 300 staff members devoted to the outbreak, Doctors Without Borders is overwhelmed, as is the World Health Organization. The solution here is not complicated: Send more people before the disease spreads further.

There is a reservoir of talent elsewhere in Africa – the doctors, nurses, epidemiologists, lab technicians and

administrators in Uganda, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Gabon who have been through this and know how to handle Ebola. By organizing teams of them to help with the current epidemic and pass their skills on to their counterparts in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, the World Health Organization could establish a pan-African partnership that central and east Africa could, in turn, rely on down the road.

International donors such as the United States and the European Union could help fund and provision the African teams.

Prohibited from doing the former in 2014, simply receiving feedback for the latter often humbles the Late Models star from St. Charles.

“Every time someone talks to me, I hear, ‘Well, we miss watching you race a lot. Will you be back next year?’ “ Ludke said. “It’s really cool that people know who I am outside of the car instead of just know my car. Some of these people I’ve never met in my life.”

There is no roll cage or helmet to obstruct fans’ view of Ludke these days – nor any No. 20 car, for that matter.

Per what drivers call the “forceout rule,” Ludke is restricted from Late Models competition after winning the track’s points title the past two seasons. He’ll be eligible to return in 2015.

Ludke, 26, captured the Spectator title in 2010 before moving up in class to Late Models, where he was third in points the following year.

Advancing to Super Late Models this season never was a realistic option, Ludke said, considering the cost associated with essentially buying a new car.

He added “there’s no possible way” to transform his current car to meet any Super Late Models specifications that would make him competitive.

With that, Ludke accepted a compulsory vacation from Sycamore’s dirt track, although he hasn’t embraced every facet.

“I’m enjoying the time off from racing,” Ludke said, “but at the same time, every time I go out to the track and I hear them talking, to know that I was a fan favorite to

a lot of people out there, it makes it hard to sit on the sideline. It makes me want to go out and put a show on for them again.”

The No. 20 car hasn’t navigated through dirt since the 2013 season finale at Sycamore last September, when Ludke edged friend and current circuit points leader Jordan Jackowiak of DeKalb for the title.

It’s possible the No. 20 car could appear in its familiar habitat in the near future as Ludke braces for some upcoming events at LaSalle Speedway, which allows larger engine and suspension sizes and is sanctioned by the United Midwestern Promoters.

Although he’s ineligible for Sycamore points races, Ludke can race hot laps without factoring into feature qualifying. Given recent modifications to his car, that might be quite the spectacle.

“He’d be a rocket out at Sycamore,” said Ludke’s dad and crew chief, Scott. “He would be a rocket, because it’s all different.”

During last season’s finale, Sycamore flagman Dave Radloff, a past “forceout rule” casualty Ludke remembers idolizing as a teen, leaned over with a message as well as the final checkered flag.

“Before he handed it to me,” Ludke said, “he yelled down at me and yelled, ‘Welcome to the club!’ with a big old smile on his face. It was pretty fun.”

Whether he’s sitting in the stands or at the wheel, enjoying himself remains Ludke’s top priority.

Of course, that’s a challenge when he’s stationary, but the actions of others can go a long way.

“Just, ‘When are you coming back? We miss you,’ “ Scott Ludke said. “Like Timmy says, ‘That’s it right there, dad. That’s why I do this.’ ”

Khoury said an in-depth chat with Morehead State outfielder Ryan Kent, of Winfield and Wheaton North High School, helped convince him to commit to the D-I Eagles on Sunday.

“I actually got to talk to one of the players on the team right now, Ryan Kent, and he talked to me about [his experience],” Khoury said.

“That was a major deciding factor because he told me all about campus, what to expect with the baseball program, coaches, players, everything like that, and it sounds like a place I could really go and click right away and start playing.”

Khoury was a First Team All-Area Kane County Chronicle selection as a junior.

Known as a strong defensive catcher, he batted .362 with seven doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs last season.

Khoury plays travel baseball with the DuPage Training Academy, and Khoury said the Eagles expressed interest after watching the team compete at a showcase hosted

by North early this summer.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Khoury said he’d like to add 10 to 20 pounds of bulk before heading to Morehead to better withstand the physical demands of catching.

Maddie Jaudon was not looking to be coddled.

The Batavia girls volleyball senior libero embraces being pushed when it comes to college volleyball, and Jaudon thinks she found the right spot for that at Division-I Elon University (N.C.), the school to which she offered her verbal commitment Thursday.

Jaudon said Elon’s conditioning coach said he works the volleyball players just as hard as the school’s football team or anyone else. That appealed to Jaudon, who thinks she has a nice head start on that front based on Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne’s commitment to rigorous workouts. “[Trippi-Payne] has made sure that conditioning is part of all the Batavia volleyball girls and that they expect that on the next level because we all know to be truly successful, you have to be an athlete and lift and be strong and be as fast as possible,” Jaudon said.

Jaudon said Elon watched her play in AAU tournaments through her travel club, Sports Performance. She then attended a camp at Elon earlier this month before solidifying her choice.

She said Elon’s location was one of its attractions.

“My whole family, we travel out there a lot,” Jaudon said. “We like the area and we just really like North Carolina, just the whole scenery and feel about it. So I always knew if I didn’t want to stay here [for college], I’d want to go to North Carolina because it just felt familiar even though I don’t have family out there.”

Elon, new to the Colonial Athletic Assocation, is coached by Mary Tendler.

“She was ecstatic [about my commitment],” Jaudon said. “I talked to her multiple times but we talked for like an hour that day.

“She was just excited and wanted to make sure I got in touch with the other girls that I met, the rest of the recruits.

Right when I said ‘Yes,’ she was big into me being part of that family.”

Dunston’s season of swings hits high in July

He’d just as soon maintain his current tear through the so-called “dog days.”

After batting .163 in April, he hit .311 in May, then followed with a .189 June. In 20 July games entering Tuesday, Dunston was clicking again, batting .409 and taking a seven-game hitting streak into the opener of a three-game series at Wisconsin.

“Just grind out my at-bats, give my teammates the best at-bat I can and help the team win as much as possible,” Dunston said. “Luckily, I’ve been successful.”

Dunston’s rise mirrors his climb into the leadoff spot after the parent Cubs promoted Jake Hannemann to Ad-

vanced-A Daytona last week.

Before the brief Wisconsin trip, Dunston batted .523 (12 for 23) in a six-game homestand against South Bend and West Michigan, notching five multi-hit games. He doubled twice Monday and drove in the team’s lone run.

Dunston carried a .286 season average in 213 at-bats into Tuesday and could see more regular duty after a recent flurry of roster moves.

An 11th round draft pick in 2011, he hit .290 in 49 games with Short-A Boise in 2013 after missing three weeks with a leg injury.

“He’s stepping up. He’s taking control of that leadoff role, and we’ve just got to have some guys behind him to start following and getting some big hits also,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “You can’t do it with just one guy.”

Playing for the USA Select Team this week, the forward’s Tuesday consisted mostly of worrying about All-Star Paul George, who he guarded during the open scrimmage on Day 2.

“It’s been great,’’ McDermott said of the experience.

“Just going against some of the best guys in the world. It’s definitely a challenge, but it can only help a guy like me, who’s just getting his NBA career started.’’

Where that career is going to start once October comes around? That remains to be seen.

Mid-American Conference-Mountain West matchups aren’t exactly commonplace.

But given the new college football system, that’s likely to change in the next few years.

Northern Illinois got in on the ground floor Tuesday.

The university announced that the Huskies will face San Diego State in a home-andhome series beginning in 2016 as teams from all over the Group of Five try to put together the strongest schedules they can to earn an automatic berth into the new playoff.

The Aztecs will visit Huskie Stadium on Sept. 17, 2016. On Sept. 30 of the next year, the Huskies will play in San Diego for at least the third time after Poinsettia Bowl trips in 2006 and 2013, not to mention any future bowl trips in the next two years.

NIU athletic director Sean Frazier said the series with San Diego State meets the Huskies’ scheduling goals of bringing quality opponents to Huskie Stadium and taking on teams from the Group of Five (MAC, American, Sun Belt, Mountain West and Conference USA) and Power Five (SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, Atlantic Coast) leagues on a home-and-home basis.

“They are a worthy competitor, nationally known,” Frazier said. “They play in the Mountain West and are in contention for the title year after year. It fits our scheduling parameters. It fits the way we want to move forward with the new playoff and be the best of the Group of Five. Having them come to our house than going back to theirs is what we want out of the program.”

The announcement kicks off SchedulePalooza, in which the school will announce a new opponent each day. Frazier did not say where the Aztecs rank among the four scheduled announcements for the week.

But Fitzgerald also believes there needs to be more accountability when it comes to recruiting in an age when high school players commit to play college football at a school, only to change their mind. So on Tuesday – a day after NorthwestPat Fitzgerald ern had its two highest-ranked recruits step away from their verbal commitments – Fitzgerald seconded a motion suggested by Nebraska coach Bo Pelini to do away with National Signing Day all together.

In its place, Fitzgerald proposed creating a website that announces that coaches have offered a high school recruit a scholarship and then giving the recruit a 48-hour “cooling off period” to decide whether he will accept it. Fitzgerald said everyone in the country would have access to the site so that it’s clear which school has offered a recruit a scholarship and what that recruit’s decision is.

The only out? If a coach gets fired or if a program gets put on NCAA probation. Otherwise, once a decision has been made, it’s made.

“Some of our fans don’t like the idea that if we make a commitment (to a recruit), we’re engaged and if you break the engagement in the marriage world, there’s no more getting married,” Fitzgerald said Tuesday at the Big Ten’s annual media days at the Chicago Hilton. “Like it or not, that’s the way we’re going to do business.”

It’s also one that is made clear to the players’ coaches and parents.

Fitzgerald couldn’t specify whether he is the only Big Ten coach to have such a policy in place. But it’s clearly located at the opposite end of the spectrum from coaches like Ohio State’s Urban Meyer and others who have made it clear they will continue to pursue a recruit until they have signed a letter of intent.

Trevor Ruhland, the No. 4-ranked recruit in Illinois according to Rivals.com who committed to Notre Dame this spring, understands the policy. Ruhland, an offensive lineman at Cary-Grove said Tuesday he appreciated how seriously Northwestern coaches took his recruiting process.

Northwestern was one of five Big Ten schools to offer Ruhland a scholarship.

While Ruhland didn’t necessarily agree with a 48-hour window to make a decision, saying the decision process takes longer than two days, he can understand Fitzgerald’s thinking. Ruhland, who committed to Notre Dame in May, said he took as long as he did to make sure the decision was the right one.

“I knew once I made a decision, that’s where I was going to go,” Ruhland said. “You see these stories of guys flipping

schools because they want to get more leverage, but I knew once I said I was going to play for someone, that’s where I was going to stay.”

On Tuesday, Fitzgerald said there has to be accountability “on both sides of the fence,” and added that he believes the way recruits formally currently commit to a college program is antiquated.

Fitzgerald’s thoughts mirror those of Pelini, who said that national signing day needs to be done away with.

That way, Pelini said, recruits would be allowed to make their decision official when they are ready rather than waiting until February, when each year, thousands of players sign their letter of intent, declaring where they will play football.

Like Fitzgerald, Pelini doesn’t understand the pomp and circumstance.

“As far as, Hey – you come to an agreement, someone commits to your school, you’ve made a commitment to a young man to come play in your program, why do we have to wait until a certain day?”, Pelini said. “Why don’t we just go ahead and sign on the dotted line, let’s get it over with and move forward.”

Pelini said perhaps by eliminating signing day, some of the early offers that come from coaches would be eliminated as well as slowing down “some of the ridiculous things that go on on both ends – on the institution’s side of things and as far as the recruits.”

Pelini said, in the end, it comes down to integrity. Fitzgerald agrees wholeheartedly.

On Monday, Northwestern lost a pair of four-star recruits from its 2015 class when twins Andrew and David Dowell – a running back and defensive back, respectively – decommitted, according to multiple reports. According to the Chicago Tribune, both Lakewood, Ohio, natives, had committed to Fitzgerald in April but are now widely considered to be leaning toward Vanderbilt.

By MARK MASKE Washington Post The Detroit Lions’ announcement Monday that they’d halted contract talks with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh until after the 2014 season creates an intriguing possibility that the threetime Pro Bowl selection will be available on the NFL’s free agent market next spring — and thus become one of the most fascinating targets in some time.

Lions officials expressed confidence Monday they would re-sign Suh. But then again, they’d previously expressed confidence he’d be resigned by now.

And if they stick to the current plan of not resuming discussions with Suh and agent Jimmy Sexton on a new deal until after the season, they will be perilously close allowing Suh to see what his services could fetch on the open market.

If Suh has an injury-free, productive season, the Lions probably would have a difficult time convincing him to sign a new deal with them before seeing what his market value would be. The Lions always could use the franchise player tag to restrict Suh’s mobility, but that would come at a major cost.

Suh’s current contract, which expires after this season, counts about $22.4 million against this year’s salary cap. So to franchise him next spring, the Lions would have to give him a one-year deal at a 20 percent raise, or about $26.9 million. As a comparison, the second-highest cap hit for any defensive tackle in 2014 is Haloti Ngata of the Baltimore Ravens at $16 million.

“You probably can’t franchise him at those numbers,” said an NFL agent who does not represent Suh and spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss another agent’s client. “If he has a good year

and doesn’t have any incidents where he gets suspended, they’re gonna have a tough time doing a deal with him before free agency. The one thing he has to worry about if he hits the market is his past.”

Suh twice has been named the league’s dirtiest player in Sporting News polls of NFL players. He was suspended for two games by the league for stepping on the arm of Green Bay Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith following a play during a Thanksgiving Day game in 2011. He was fined $30,000 for kicking Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin in 2012 and $100,000 for a low block on Minnesota Vikings center John Sullivan last year during an interception return.

“There might be a little bit of the [Albert] Haynesworth factor,” said the agent, referring to possible wariness by some NFL teams to offer Suh a hypothetical lucrative contract based on the issues experienced by the Redskins after they signed the controversial defensive tackle to a record free-agent deal in 2009.

“But this guy [Suh] can play.

He’ll find someone to give him a bunch of money.”

Suh, 27, has 27-1/2 sacks in four seasons with the Lions.

He was named the NFL’s defensive rookie of the year in 2010 and was selected to Pro Bowls in the 2010, 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Suh is already the NFL’s highest-paid defensive tackle, making his potential open-market value tricky to estimate. A potential comparable could be the Bengals’ Geno Atkins, who signed a five-year, $53.33 million extension with Cincinnati last September.

However, the full value of that contract was over $10 million less than the rookie deal Suh signed under the previous collective bargaining agreement.

‘Get on Up’ doesn’t tell full story of James Brown

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now The energy and excitement are there, the music – from which much of that energy and excitement pours – is front and center, and the acting is as near as you can get to flawless. But when a poster boldly claims “Get on Up” to be “the James Brown story,” the film has the responsibility to tell that story in a manner that lets you begin to understand what made James Brown tick.

That doesn’t happen here. Yes, the tale stretches from his poor-as-dirt days, growing up in a dysfunctional backwoods family – dad (Lennie James) is a brute, and mom (Viola Davis) pretty much flees for her life – and it goes right up to the period when the international star is starting to lose his mind. But the film is constructed in a scattershot matter. It jumps around in time, visiting and revisiting different points in his life and different people at those points, without letting us comprehend what’s going on in his head at any given time.

Chadwick Boseman, who’s been knocking around on various TV series for the past decade but hit gold embodying Jackie Robinson last year in “42” and added great support as Vontae Mack a few months ago in “Draft Day,” doesn’t really look much like James Brown in any of his various hairstyles. But he’s got both the moods and the moves of the man down.

Unfortunately, Boseman also goes for and gets Brown’s sometimes unintelligible bursts of barking out words when he’s upset. But that goes with the package.

Of the people acting around him, everyone does it right, but two really stand out: Nelsan Ellis (“True Blood”) as Bobby Byrd, his friend and bandmate turned background singer, and Dan Aykroyd as his longtime agent Ben Bart.

But never mind the acting. This should have been a film that dug deep into Brown’s life, and pulled out moments that led to him becoming as successful and influential as history says he was.

There’s not really a lot about his influence here, but it’s explained that he made a lot of money, could pump up a crowd, and alienated the musicians in his band.

But though it covers a lot of ground, the script skirts over too many situations and issues. And it completely ignores the younger viewers that it should go out of its way to educate and inform.

No one under 30 is going to realize that the man named Richard (Brandon Smith) – who, for a very brief period, takes young James under his wing and offers him advice – is Little Richard, as beyond the performance of a song, he’s never even introduced.

And the scriptwriters either didn’t do their research on an important subject, or just got it wrong.

Their presentation of significant

events that happened right after the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King are completely misconstrued here.

King was killed on April 4, and Brown had a concert scheduled at the Boston Garden on April 5. The day was saved, and violence was avoided, not as the film purports, because the concert went on or because Brown calmed down the crowd, but because Boston Mayor Kevin White got a local TV station (WGBH) to broadcast the concert live, keeping people at home, watching it on TV rather than being out in the streets.

Yet there are plenty of other events, some of them less important, others underdeveloped, tossed into the film that pad it rather than propel the story.

The stylistic choice of presenting all of this information in jumps and starts, and flitting back and forth in time, might have sounded like a good idea, and even made some sense on the written page.

But despite the creative approach of the filmmakers, and a lengthy 138-minute running time, we get only a series of snapshots rather than a cohesive picture of the man’s life.

After watching the film, I still don’t know the James Brown story.

• “Get On Up” is written by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth and directed by Tate Taylor. The film stars Chadwick Boseman, Nelsan Ellis, Dan Aykroyd, Lennie James and Viola Davis.

It is rated PG-13.

How to treat and prevent athlete’s foot infection Dear Doctor K: I have athlete’s foot. How can I get rid of it? And how can I make sure I don’t get it again?

Dear Reader: Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection. It got its name because walking around barefoot in a locker room is a good way to become infected. You can also pick up the fungus from improperly cleaned instruments used in a pedicure, in the dressing rooms of clothing stores, in swimming pool changing areas, or any place that combines dampness and a lot of foot traffic.

An early sign of infection is white scaly patches or fissures (small tears in the skin), especially between the toes. As the infection progresses, the skin may turn red and become itchy and moist. Small blisters may spread out across your foot. They then break and expose painful fissures that may swell. The infection may spread to the soles of your feet or to your toenails. If you touch your feet and then another part of your body, the infection may spread there as well.

There are several treatment options. For a mild infection, focus on foot hygiene. Wash

Apply an antifungal cream to the affected area and dust your socks and shoes with antifungal powder. Examples of medicines that are available over the counter are terbinafine (Lamisil), clotrimazole (Lotrimin), miconazole (Micatin) and tolnaftate (Tinactin). Many effective antifungal remedies are sold over the counter.

If you have a severe infection or don’t see improvement after two weeks of over-the-counter treatment, see a foot care specialist. He or she may prescribe a stronger topical medication for a longer period of time. He or she also may recommend a prescription medication to take by mouth. Some examples are terbinafine, itraconazole and fluconazole.

Watch for one dangerous complication of athlete’s foot: a bacterial infection called cellulitis. It causes a redness of

the skin on the top of the foot (starting near the toes) and then spreads up the lower leg. The red area may be slightly tender, and a fever may develop. Bacteria live on the skin. When athlete’s foot causes a break in the skin, it allows bacteria to get under the surface of the skin and spread.

The best way to prevent athlete’s foot, or a recurrence of it, is by wearing sandals or shower shoes in locker rooms or pool areas. Fungi thrive in dark, damp environments, but the most common dark, damp environment your feet experience is not a locker room. It’s your shoe, particularly in warm or hot weather, when your feet sweat.

To avoid athlete’s foot, wash your feet with soap and water at least once a day. Keep your feet dry the rest of the time. Put on clean socks every day, and change them more often if you sweat a lot or get them wet. Take your shoes off at home to give your feet a chance to “breathe.”

Teen girl is as free as a bird Dr. Wallace: I’m a 17-year-old girl, and for the first time in several years, I’m free as a bird in flight. Since I started dating at 15, I was always hung up on some guy. I thought if I didn’t have a guy, I’d be an outcast socially. Sure, I want to meet the right guy someday, but that’s in the future.

I am now totally happy not having a guy in my life. I belong to several school organizations, volunteer for a local charity and teach Sunday school. At the bridge table, a deal is a short-term problem. Your goal is to make or break the contract.

However, sometimes there is an ominous problem that can be hard to spot.

In today’s deal, how should South play in three no-trump?

West leads his fourth-highest heart. East wins with his ace and returns the heart jack, the higher of two remaining cards.

The auction was straightforward. South’s one-no-trump rebid showed a balanced hand with 12-14 points. North knew to go for the nine-trick game, not to look for five clubs. Here, careful defense would have defeated five clubs; South would have lost two spades and one heart.

Declarer seems to have nine easy winners: one spade, one heart (given the first trick), two diamonds and five clubs. But if South wins the second trick and goes after the clubs, he will, sooner or later, notice a problem.

Since East has jack-third, declarer will have to win the fourth round of clubs in the dummy.

He will have no way to reach his winning club six.

It is difficult to anticipate the potential blockage in the club suit. But once it is spotted, how can South get around it?

The solution is not to win the second heart trick. Then, when East leads his last heart, declarer takes the trick with his king and discards a club from the dummy.

Alternatively (but not recommended), South could take the second trick and lead his third heart, throwing a club from the board.

Kaneland teens help make fire safety camp a success Sabrina Sivert said she fretted a bit about her first day helping to run a summer camp at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum.

Sivert, a 17-year-old Maple Park resident, was among those who ultimately helped 1,200 Aurora students in first through fifth grades learn more about fire safety over four weeks.

The camp ended last week.

“I was giving tours of the museum, and I didn’t know a lot about it,” she said. “I was kind of nervous. … By the last day, I was sad it was over. Now, the speech we give, I have it memorized. I know it just like that.”

It was the first time the museum had put on such a camp, and organizers said it was a valuable experience for the children who attended and the teens who worked to put on the camp.

Many of the teens intend to one day become firefighters, including Sivert and another camp leader, Edgar Villafuerte, an 18-year-old of Elburn and a recent Kaneland graduate. They were among many who helped run the camp.

At the camp, Villafuerte said he worked at an activity called the combat challenge.

He showed camp participants how firefighters must crawl, with their gear, because smoke rises and visibility is better when they stay low.

Sivert and Villafuerte both said they intend to become firefighters, and such experiences are helpful to them. Mark Baum, the vice president of the Aurora Regional Fire Museum Board of Directors, said part of the reason the camp took place was because he thought some of the children in the East Aurora School District might not previously have been to the museum. Also, he said, it was a way to let the kids know that they need not fear firefighters.

“I want them to respect the men and women who put their lives on the line every day,” Baum said.

Sivert and Villafuerte also have participated in the fire science program at the Fox Valley Career Center, which is at Kaneland High School.

Baum’s cousin, Gary Baum, is the fire safety instructor at the Fox Valley Career Center and also the deputy chief at the Fox River and Countryside Fire Protection District.

Sivert said she intends to become a firefighter and a paramedic.

Gary Baum said the fire safety program at the Fox Valley Career Center is in its ninth year.

He said there are 75 students enrolled, many from areas outside of Kaneland, including Burlington Central, St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva and West Aurora.

He said many come in intending to become firefighters, and he said there are about 40 who have taken the class now working at departments throughout the Fox Valley.

“Whether you decide to move forward or not, at least you have a greater appreciation for what the men and women of the fire service actually do,” he said.
