I had the chance to spend a few moments with Karen McCannon in the driveway of her Sugar Grove home last week as she tooled around in a golf cart with her granddaughter Sammie McCannon.

Most residents of Sugar Grove probably only know Karen as JoJo the Clown. And the golf cart, the Clown Victoria, sports eyelashes and a big red

nose.

A sign on JoJo’s front porch caught my attention. It reads: “Let your life speak for you.”

Karen spoke to me about losing her husband more than 10 years ago, and shortly thereafter becoming JoJo. She is truly letting her life speak for her, and I can only hope I can live up to that statement, as well.

JoJo will once again be leading the Sugar Grove Fourth of July Bike Parade on Saturday.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police will have parking restrictions in place Saturday because of heavy vehicle traffic expected for the Fourth of July celebration at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave., St. Charles, according to a news release.

The celebration will include a fireworks display that will begin at dusk Saturday at Pottwatomie Park, which is east of the Fox River.

Motorists attending the event are encouraged to check for posted parking restrictions on several local roadways surrounding the park, including North; North Second; North Third;

Christmas in July fundraiser seeking various donations

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Christmas trees in the lobby at the St. Charles Police Department and at the St. Charles Municipal Building are decorated with bone-shaped ornaments seeking donations of detergent, dog beds, cat toys and paper towels.

The Christmas in July fundraiser seeks to collect goods for two local dog and cat rescue organizations – Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets in St. Charles and Rover Rescue in North Aurora.

The giving trees are open to the public, as well as city employees, said Teri Grandt, a city employee who also is the foster home coordinator for Rover Rescue.

Grandt said the extra effort

is appreciated by the organizations, which both foster dogs and cats for adoption.

“It makes a big difference,” Grandt said. “I had a Ford Expedition that was filled last year.”

In addition to the specific items needed, both charities also receive cash donations, but these are accepted at only at the municipal building, 2 E. Main St., she said.

Both organizations also can accept cash donations on their websites.

“The cash helps pay for vet bills,” Grandt said.

Participants are asked to take a tag from a tree, return the unwrapped items along with the tag and put them under the tree. Items should be delivered by July 31, and the city will distribute the items to the two organizations.

Iroquois, Bent, Fulton, Park, Chestnut and State avenues, the release stated.

Since the fireworks will be visible west of the Fox River, there also will be parking restrictions along North Second Street (Route 31), according to the release.

Vehicles parked in designated no-parking zones will be ticketed and towed, the release stated.

For safety reasons, fireworks observations will not be allowed on the fifth level of the First Street parking garage or on the bicycle bridge that crosses the Fox River beneath the railroad trestle, according to the release.

The bicycle bridge will be closed at 9 p.m. Saturday, but it will be accessible after

the fireworks display concludes, the release states.

Motorists should expect heavy traffic before and after the fireworks display and are encouraged to seek alternate routes of travel. Police recommend parking away from the park and using the bike paths, river walk and sidewalks, according to the release.

St. Charles Police and Emergency Management personnel will be posted at key intersections to assist pedestrian and vehicle traffic after the fireworks.

Also, police stated extra patrols will be out this weekend in accordance with the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and the “Click It or Ticket” traffic safety campaigns, the release stated.

COVER STORY REDUCING WASTE TAKES PRIORITY Updated solid waste plan seeks expanded recycling

“The first one is ‘rethink,’ ” Jarland said. “Do I need to buy this thing, or can I continue to use the one I have?”

As landfill space dwindles and Kane County’s population is projected to grow to more than 800,000 by 2040, the demand for managing solid waste, recycling and composting never has been greater, according to the county’s 2015 update to its Solid Waste Plan and Resource Recovery Plan.

“Kane County has a current overall recycling rate of approximately 38 percent, which exceeds the state recycling standard of 25 percent,” according to the report. “Yet there is room for improvement in that over 80 percent of the material that is landfilled as trash is potentially recyclable or compostable.”

The 92-page report is expected to be adopted by the Kane County Executive Committee on Wednesday. It details challenges and solutions ranging from encouraging composting of food scraps to minimizing waste.

Cathode ray tubes

Those old clunky TVs and computers with their cathode ray tubes loaded with toxic lead take up 60 to 70 percent of the volume of recycled materials in Kane County, Jarland said.

Kane County collected 3.6 million pounds of electronics between 2000 and 2009 and more than 6.5 million pounds 2010 to 2014, according to recycling statistics. The volume received in the first quarter of 2015 was 455,151 pounds, the highest ever in such a period, according to recycling statistics.

“It’s all old TVs and monitors,” Jarland said. “We are in negotiations with our electronics recycler, trying to figure out what we are going to do.

Right now, they are drowning under [the] weight of all the TVs they are receiving.”

The county’s monthly recycling program and permanent drop-off locations still accept them, but only from county residents.

One thing that will help is House Bill 1455, passed by the General Assembly and still awaiting Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature, Jarland said. The bill would increase manufacturers’ weight goals for recycling electronics through 2017.

“Since mid-2014, however, electronics recycling programs are struggling to survive because the manufacturer goals were set too low in the original bill, which requires that each manufacturer must recycle 50 percent by weight of what was sold two years ago,” Jarland wrote in an email.

“The problem is that what people

are recycling is mostly old heavy TVs and computer monitors, and what is selling are lighter-weight flat screens and smaller devices,” according to Jarland’s email.

“This is a story of our times,” Jarland wrote in the email. “The good news is that it is fluid.”

“Food scraps is the next big piece of the pie,” Jarland said. “The reason why it is important to get it out of landfills, is that it is in an organic anaerobic environment that creates methane.

Methane is more potent than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.”

The solid waste plan recommends developing avenues of outreach to commercial food service establishments to encourage separation and collection of food scraps for composting or anaerobic digestion.

Making connections between businesses and haulers will create an infrastructure for processing food scraps, she said.

county residents to recycle them. The county encourages residents to donate to Goodwill Industries, The Salvation Army, Credential Wholesalers and USAgain.

USAgain in West Chicago has 25 drop box bins throughout Kane County that accepts clothing, shoes and other items, which fulfills one of the solid waste plan’s recommendations – to recycle textiles.

A spokesman for the company wrote in an email USAgain collected nearly 135,000 pounds of unwanted clothing and shoes from Kane County.

Kane County Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, who is on the Energy and Environmental Committee, said he supports the updated solid waste plan.

“They provide leadership to help people [recycle] things they would not do on their own,” Kenyon said.

“Somebody has to take an initiative, and I’m glad the county sees the worth of doing that.”

Jarland is a co-founder and one of the original members of the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition, a threeyear-old organization that has more than 100 members.

He was born October 21, 1921 in Chicago, the son of Frank and Mabel (Filley) Allison.

Lloyd was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having proudly served his country during World War II. He worked for many years as a district manager for Illinois Bell. Lloyd was a beloved family man and will be dearly missed by all those who loved him. He practiced all the Corporal Works of Mercy.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Enda (Mortimer); children, Patricia of San Francisco, Lloyd (Rita) of Chicago, James (Mary Ann) of Elburn, Jerome (Eneida) of Florida, Kathleen Cooney of Bloomingdale, and Mary Ann (Steve) Smunt of St. Charles; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.

SHIRLEY MAE BRASHLER Born: Sept. 11, 1923 Died: June 24, 2015

Shirley Mae Franz Brashler, age 91 went to be with the Lord on June 24, 2015. Shirley was born in Chicago on September 11, 1923 to William E. and Evelyn C. Franz (nee Morrall), both first generation US citizens. A few years later, her brother Bill completed the family.

As a child who grew up in the depression, Shirley developed a keen ability to cope with scarcity and a commitment to the American dream. She studied piano from childhood and in the early 1940s studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music.

In 1944 she married Richard (Dick) Brashler. At the end of the war, Shirley set about making a home for her growing family, eventually including three children, Rick, Jan, Craig, and a number of beloved dogs and cats. Over the years Shirley’s talents for gardening, home decorating, hospitality, and financial planning resulted in homes enjoyed by family and friends. Principle among these much-beloved homes is the family cottage in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which like Shirley, is a tie that binds the family together.

Shirley was a faithful and generous friend, devoted to her children, grandchildren, great grand children, music, gardening and home making. If she knew someone was ill or suffering, she was there with a pot of soup and a bunch of flowers.

She is remembered for her passion for music, the piano, and her volunteer work with several organizations including serving as an officer on the Women’s Board of Bob Roberts Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago; an officer of the Board of the Women’s Association for the Major Symphony Orchestras of the United States and Canada; Executive committee member and officer of the Women’s Association of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; a governing member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Trustees; and a member of the Volunteer Council of the American Symphony Orchestra League. As part of her work for these organizations, she met many interesting and colorful artists, musicians and fellow volunteers.

Shirley was a 50 + year member of P.E.O holding multiple offices in that organization. She loved to travel and traveled extensively with family and friends, to six out of seven continents. Shirley was active in her investment club, loved to play bridge, and most of all, loved to be at the beach or “up north” with her family to whom she was devoted.

She was preceded in death by

her brother, Bill; and her parents, William and Evelyn.

She will be greatly missed by her family; children, Rick Brashler (Jane Smith), Jan Brashler, and Craig (Carol Carberry) Brashler; grandchildren, David (Jamie) Brashler, John (Gretchen) Brashler, Lindsey (Mike LaRocco) Brashler, and Doug (Maggie) Brashler; four great grandchildren, Julia, Cate, Ethan, and William (Will) Brashler; nephew and niece, Bill and Julie Franz; and nephews and niece Steven, Andy, Mike Brashler, and Susan (Brashler) Hollister.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on August 14 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 320 Franklin Street, Geneva, IL 60134.

‘ … from my cold, dead hands’ Walking through a library recently, I noticed books piled like rectangular stalagmites above an empty card catalogue cabinet.

“We’re donating them,” the librarian said as if giving away her life. I imagined her being dragged out by Digital Reader Deputies, her screams echoing NRA spokesman Charlton Heston: “I’ll give you my hardbacks and paperbacks when you pry them from my cold, dead hands!”

The slow demise of print books arose at 2015’s Printers Row Lit Fest. Oak Park novelist Elizabeth Berg told a crowd, “There’s nothing quite like holding a book in your hands ... I think it’s really important to fight the good fight.”

What better time than Independence Day weekend to start a revolutionary war? All wood pulp book devotees oppressed by Kindles and ebooks, arise! Rebel against the senseless microchip!

Needing recruits, after our workshop, I asked St. Charles Writers Group members feasting at Colonial Café to join the ranks.

“I prefer my Kindle,” declared Stacy Chambers. “While in bed, I don’t need reading glasses, because the font is larger and back lit.”

Huh? I’d never build an army this way. Then others replied.

“Sitting on a couch or beach with a [print] book is the epitome of relaxing,” Cathy Kern stated.

“I deal with electronics all week, so love getting away from it.”

“I buy biographies for my wife,” Roger Tillbrook added. “I giftwrap them – can’t do that on a screen!”

“I have an intimate relationship with my books,” Lynn Handy answered, “drawing my finger across a particularly satisfying sentence, trying to physically absorb the author’s thought.”

“Holding a book is not much different from a favorite pillow,” William Pack reflected. “The feel of the paper, the heft in my

Someone then mentioned a recent upsurge in print book sales. Publisher’s Weekly confirmed, “Unit sales of print books sold through outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan rose 2.4 percent in 2014. ...”

All I needed now was a Gen. Washington, willing to risk coin and realm. In David Hunt, owner and manager of St. Charles’s Townhouse Books and Café, one of the last independent bookstores in the Fox Valley, I found my leader.

“People tell us they need a printed book in their hands,” he said. “They like to keep track of how far they are, enjoy turning pages and the smell of the book.”

“I love your staff’s mini-reviews and recommendations,” I said. “They help people weed through the morass of options.

The restaurant brings in customers, too.”

My mouth waters, recalling the best soups and sandwiches in the Tri-Cities, not to mention the wood-beamed ambiance and images of famous authors joining me for lunch.

Reading over this column, Tia, my wife, remembered: “When my friend Holly’s father died, she was skimming through his books and found things he’d written in them. Reading what he wrote made her feel connected to him again in an incredibly close way.”

Sometimes the end of a book is not the end of the story.

Solitary confinement’s human toll THE WASHINGTON POST “Violently insane,” the Supreme Court wrote in 1890 of prisoners who had experienced solitary confinement. “The edge of madness, perhaps ... madness itself,” Justice Anthony Kennedy echoed 125 years later. Justice Kennedy’s concurring opinion last month in Davis v. Ayala all but invited a legal challenge to the age-old practice of holding prisoners in near-total isolation. Such a challenge is overdue: Solitary confinement is incontestably cruel but unfortunately far from unusual.

Justice Kennedy’s opinion rewinds through years of scholarship and other commentary on solitary confinement, from prison reformer John Howard to novelist Charles Dickens to the Supreme Court justices who said the practice bore a “peculiar mark of infamy” in its ability to shatter the minds and spirits of prisoners.

The horror of solitary confinement – which often masquerades under names such as “prison segregation” or “restricted housing” – remains clear today. When prisoners eat, sleep and defecate in spaces no larger than parking spaces, with no social contact for 23 hours a day, healthy inmates go mad, and those already sick get sicker. Yet federal and state prison systems continue to hold more than 80,000 prisoners in some form of restricted housing, 25,000 of those in “supermax” facilities usually made up of solitary confinement cells.

Perhaps there are a handful of prisoners in each state whose situations merit strict solitary confinement. There are not hun-

Even the most violent and volatile inmates deserve a more ethical system that trains guards to interact with prisoners, offers incentives for good behavior and presents an easier path to reduced restrictions. In suggesting the judiciary might mandate the adoption of alternative long-term confinement methods, Kennedy has opened the door to needed reform.

But it should not take a court case for that reform to happen. Federal and state officials should look closely at their prisons and rethink who is in solitary and why. Early reformers, such as Mississippi, Maine and Colorado, have more than halved solitary confinement numbers and shut down some units altogether. Besides being more humane, reformed methods tend to reduce violence and even save money.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

NORTH AURORA – A nail salon worker Wednesday pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery for biting her manager on the hand during an altercation in August 2012.

A u t h o r i - Anh T. Le ties in return dropped two felony battery charges against Anh T. Le, 33, of St. Charles. The incident happened at the Tip 2 Toes Nails salon on Randall Road in North Aurora.

According to court records,

Le on Aug. 3, 2012, “bit the victim’s hand, and the resulting injury left the victim with permanent disfigurement.” At the time of the incident, Le was working at Tip 2 Toes as a nail technician.

As part of the plea agreement, Le was sentenced to 18 months of conditional discharge. She also was ordered to pay $170 in restitution and fined $300. She spent six days in Kane County Jail before posting bail.

In a separate incident, Le was placed on six months of court supervision and was fined $300 after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct for throwing a cellphone at someone in a 2010 incident at a Geneva salon.

Police: Suspicious Taylor Street Pizza incident involving truck in St. Charles ST. CHARLES – Police in St. Charles reported an incident this week in which a man in a truck approached an 8-yearold girl at Harvest Hills Park, which is at Heritage Street at Heritage Court, and asked the girl to come into the truck, according to a news release issued by the department.

St. Charles Police Sgt. Mike Griesbaum said the incident took place at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. The release indicated two Hispanic men were in a newer model red pickup truck. The release stated the passenger talked to the girl and asked where

her house was and “then asked her if she wanted to come in the truck and go somewhere.”

Police said the passenger was a 20- to 30-year-old man with brown or black hair and wearing a blue T-shirt.

According to the release, the girl kept walking. The release indicated other girls were in the area but did not hear the conversation. Police said the truck had been in the area four or five times in the past month, but Griesbaum on Thursday said the incident was the first time contact had been made.

He said anyone who sees the truck in the area should call 911, so police can try to identify those in the vehicle.

Resurfacing project begins this month KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles this month begins its 2015 Street Program Resurfacing project on the city’s west side, according to a news release.

The project will expand to various streets on the city’s east side July 13 and on North Tyler Road between East Main Street and Allen Lane starting in August, the release stated.

Letters were mailed to area residents who might be affected by the construction, with the exception of Peck Road, where roadway construction signs will be placed in advance of that work starting.

“It’s important to have streets in good working order for safe, reliable transportation throughout the community,” Civil Engineering Project Coordinator Gary Long said.

“The city works hard to keep our streets and infrastructure well-maintained.”

be resurfaced on the west side: 8th Court from its south end to Oak Street; Avalon Court from its west end to South 15th Street; Greenwood Lane from Oxmoor Court to the north end of Red Gate Park; Mockingbird Court from its west end to Greenwood Lane, Oxmoor Court from its east end to Greenwood Lane; Peck Road from Route 38 to south of Dean Street and South 8th Street between Oak and Indiana streets.

Clean slate doesn’t affect hot Cougars Team improves to 7-1 since All-Star break

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With the Midwest League resetting team records with the start of the second half of the season, it opens a level playing field for teams that did not have had a strong first half.

But it came at the perfect time for the Kane County Cougars. The team won its seventh straight, and now 13 of its past 14 after Thursday night’s 7-5 win over Clinton.

“It’s not really something you can plan to happen, ... we just kind of got lucky that that’s the way it turned out,” second baseman Cody Regis said of ending the first half on a strong note. “We’ve been playing well, but we also kind of treat this like a brand new season – a clean slate. I’ve never been a part of something like this, but it keeps things exciting and we’re looking forward to it.”

Regis has been a key to the fast second-half start for the Cougars, with a current 10-for-23 stretch slotting him in the clean-up hole for Thursday’s game.

Before the break, the Cougars (7-1, 43-33 overall) won six straight and sent Regis and five other players to the Midwest League All-Star Game.

With the four days off for most players, a slow start, which is what might have cost the Cougars a clinching playoff spot in the first half, is something every team tries to avoid.

“The players have been doing a good job of getting things done,” manager Mark Grudzielanek said. “It was nice to finish the first half the way we did, and, hopefully, we can continue to keep things rolling here.”

Teams finishing at the top of each division of the Midwest League clinch a playoff spot, as do two wild-card teams. Grudzielanek thought by no means did his team have a bad first half, but wasn’t able to overcome a “sluggish” start to earn a spot in the playoffs in the first half of the season.

But the Cougars first-year manager said the team winning games has come down to doing three things well: Starting pitching, playing defense and getting timely hits. If the team continues to do those three things at a consistent rate, Grudzielanek sees no reason why a hot start to the second half shouldn’t continue.

SUGAR GROVE – Top Illinois-bred amateur men’s golfers Doug Ghim and Nick Hardy entered Thursday with one combined round at Rich Harvest Farms under their belts.

Their grasp of the tournament to be held there next month registers much more soundly.

“Winning the Western Amateur would mean a lot to me because it’s probably the best amateur event in the world,” Hardy said before joining media and other regional golf officials for a round on a picturesque afternoon.

He would know.

Hardy (Illinois) and Ghim (Texas) both are veterans of the Western Amateur, an invitation-only event founded in 1899 that features 156 of the top amateur players worldwide.

Ghim took medalist honors in 2014, while Texas’ Beau Hossler, who was part of the winning Team USA at last month’s Palmer Cup international match-play event at Rich Harvest, is the defending champion.

Regardless of venue, the Western Amateur format tests golfers in a unique way, and is the third-oldest amateur championship, trailing only the British Amateur and U.S. Amateur.

The field will be cut to 44 after separate rounds of stroke play Aug. 4 and 5. The next day, 36 holes decide which 16 athletes advance to a two-day, match-play tournament set for Aug. 7 and 8.

Notable past champions include Ben Crenshaw (1973), Phil Mickelson (1991) and Tiger Woods (1994).

Dealing with shared prestige is especially pertinent for Ghim, a Buffalo Grove alumnus, lately. The Longhorn often walks past displays and murals highlighting the achievements of Texas product Jordan Spieth, who has won the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open and figures to be a contender in the British Open this month.

Hardy, a Glenbrook North alumnus, enjoyed the sporadic distinction of setting the score that determined the cut, which

made him instantly recognizable among the regular touring pros.

“For me to play the weekend, as well, was just even better,” Hardy said. “It was a huge learning curve for me.”

Rich Harvest Farms owner and founder Jerry Rich opened a ceremony with welcoming remarks, speaking about the course’s ascension in the national golf consciousness that includes hosting the inaugural LPGA International Crown in 2016.

RHF, also the home course of Northern Illinois men’s and women’s golf, will host the NCAA men’s and women’s national tournaments in 2017.

Decades after daydreaming about being a golf course designer, Rich, whose business roots are in finance, again is showcasing his handiwork while challenging some of golf’s up-and-coming talent.

“That’s what this is all about, and that’s what we’re very excited about, is growing the game,” Rich said.

Durocher commits to Barry Beach, warm weather add to school’s draw

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com It was hard for Hanna Durocher to imagine not playing competitive soccer anymore.

After her senior season ended, the Kane County Chronicle Player of the Year decided she needed to pursue playing in college and was rewarded.

After taking a recent visit, Durocher committed to Division II Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, to

play soccer.

“It’s an awesome feeling, honestly,” Durocher said.

“There was so much up in the air, but to know I get to play and have teammates and compete for another four years is a great feeling.”

Durocher, who scored 16 goals and added 18 assists Hanna for the North Durocher Stars this past season, always had wanted to go to school somewhere warm and originally had looked to go to college at Florida Gulf Coast University before deciding soccer had to be in her future.

Once she decided she wanted to play, Durocher took the old-fashioned route and started emailing coaches, being upfront and honest about her situation, with it being fairly late in the traditional recruiting process after her senior year of high school.

Her visit with coaches and walking around the campus made her even more sure Barry was somewhere she wanted to spend the next four years. “[Barry] is a great program and they compete in the conference every year,” Durocher said. “They also just got a new coach, so I know there won’t be much change for a while and they are ready to build a strong program.

and the warm weather didn’t hurt either.”

The Barry Buccaneers are part of the Sunshine State Conference and the school enrollment is just more than 4,000 students. Durocher intends to study business at the Florida-based school.

The skilled forward said she will get to Barry around Aug. 8 for the team’s preseason workouts, but will have a fitness packet to follow in the meantime to prepare for the heat and strenuous college soccer schedule.

With the work ethic she brings to the D-II program, it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who saw her play over her four years at North to see Durocher contribute right away.

Number-crunching GM patient Sharp, Bickell still likely candidates to be dealt before season opener

This could take a while.

Day 2 of free agency came and went Thursday, and Patrick Sharp still is on the Hawks roster. So are Bryan Bickell and Kris Versteeg.

Marcus Kruger remains unsigned. So do Joakim Nordstrom and Andrew Desjardins. Johnny Oduya remains an unrestricted free agent, patiently sitting on offers while waiting out the Hawks to see if they somehow can free up enough salary-cap space to bring him back to a blue line that desperately needs him.

Training camp doesn’t open for more than two months. The Hawks don’t need to be under the salary cap until Oct. 7. And general manager Stan Bowman appears to be in no rush.

It was a quiet day around the league, other than the St. Louis Blues and Washington

Capitals swapping wingers T.J. Oshie and Troy Brouwer.

All the Hawks did was add a couple of depth defensemen probably headed for Rockford: Cameron Schilling and Michael Liambas.

But there still is much work to do.

With 12 forwards, five defensemen and two goaltenders, the Hawks have more than $71 Stan Bowman million committed already, and a few spots left to fill. Talks with Kruger continue to inch along slowly, and Bowman said Tuesday the two sides were “close” to a deal. Defenseman prospect Stephen Johns is the front-runner to make the team out of camp, so that’s another $800,000.

And the Hawks want to add another veteran defenseman, whether it’s bringing back Oduya somehow (his cap hit was $3.375 million

this past season) or Kyle Cumiskey, or signing someone such as Christian Ehrhoff.

Next year’s salary cap will be $71.4 million, so salary-shedding trades still are coming. The Brandon Saad trade did little to prevent that, as Artem Anisimov and Marko Dano gobble up the salary earmarked for him. Sharp and Bickell still are the leading candidates to be dealt, as they combine for a $9.9 million cap hit, each with two years left on his contract.

A source said the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens were among the initial teams with some interest in Sharp. But the Penguins got their winger in Kessel, and the Capitals added Oshie. The Boston Bruins were believed to be sniffing around Bickell, but Wednesday acquired power forward Jimmy Hayes (an ex-Hawks winger) and signed winger Matt Beleskey.

That doesn’t leave Bowman with many potential trade partners as the July

frenzy dies down. But Bowman has been patient in the past, waiting all the way until October last year to deal Nick Leddy, even though he knew he had to do it to get under the cap. Teams are allowed to be up to 10 percent over the cap during the summer, and don’t need to be cap-compliant until the season opener.

“You’ve got to be cap compliant, but there’s a lot of ways to do that,” Bowman said at the draft Saturday. “We don’t have to do it at any specific time, other than prior to the season.”

The only reason for rushing at this point would be to free up space and make an offer to Oduya and/or Desjardins, the two unrestricted free agents who conceivably could be back. Both have offers on the table from other teams, but both have received interest from the Hawks, as well.

It’s just a matter of making the numbers work.

“We’re not really at a point yet where we know what we would be offering, or what we’d be capable of offering,” Bowman said Saturday.

But he seems to have a greater thirst for synergy and fine wine than hunger for control.

That much was sorted out behind the RV on that Pensacola beach eight months ago with team president Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer, over beers and baseball talk.

“I like the way we have it set up. I reJoe Maddon ally enjoy the people I work with,” Maddon said. “The conversation’s always healthy.

And then I get to do my job.

This is my job.

If Maddon didn’t fully appreciate the separation of powers after three decades as a scout, instructor, minor-league manager and big-league coach, he developed an abiding faith in

checks and balances during nine years of managing in Tampa Bay under GM Andrew Friedman – with a Rays organization that has long been major league baseball’s model for ownership-GM-managerial synergy.

“My take on things in our industry today is that there has to be a strong relationship between the front office and this seat,” Maddon said. “It’s changed dramatically over the last 25 or 30 years – where there was this autocratic manager whose powers pretty much exceeded everybody’s and he was almost in charge of all decision making.”

Telling Jon Lester he’s done after four innings or sending the traveling secretary in search of a magician in New York is about as autocratic as Maddon gets. So far at least.

Not to say there hasn’t already been “healthy debate” between Maddon and the front office over a handful of personnel decisions, including Javy Baez’s roster status in spring training.

That’s where relationships and trust play, Maddon said.

“So it’s not an argument.

It’s not a dispute,” he said.

“It’s a nice debate. And it’s not about who’s right; it’s about getting it right.”

Whether raised stakes and heat during the pursuit of Cubs grail ever escalate into bona fide conflict between the strong personalities in charge, Maddon seems confident in his lane – and in his relationships with Epstein and Hoyer in just the past several months.

At best, Maddon is a coalition builder with a compassion for others’ beliefs and viewpoints. At least, he is a progressive communicator who embraces new ideas and creativity.

“I know what I think and what I believe, but then you have to hear this other opinion also to really come to the correct conclusion,” he said.

“There’s so much going on out there, and there’s so many bright people out there that I want to hear what you have to say, man.”

Hitting coach can’t help but take some responsibility

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The lofty expectations for the 2015 White Sox makes the reality of their performance so disheartening.

Much was expected, collectively and individually. Oddsmakers who drew up those fun preseason over/unders set one bar for what figured to happen, and a look at one of them (Bovada) is a reminder of what was expected from the Sox: Melky Cabrera, .295 batting average. Alexei Ramirez, .272 average. Jose Abreu, 33½ home runs. Adam LaRoche, 23½ homers.

Those holding “under” tickets are using a firm grip.

Cabrera is hitting .251 as the All-Star break approaches, Ramirez is at .217, Abreu is on pace for 27 homers and LaRoche is on pace for 19.

The Sox offense ranks last in the American League in runs, slugging percentage and OPS, is tied for last in homers and is second to last in hits and on-base percentage.

So it must have been good for second-year hitting coach Todd Steverson to hear team vice president Ken Williams support the Sox coaching staff last week, going out of his way to call Steverson “one of the best hitting coaches around.’’

“It’s always nice to hear from your boss,” Steverson said. “I appreciate the kind words, but I’m not going to stop and say, ‘Woo-hoo,’ because of it. I’m the same guy every day. Good or bad, I’m pretty relentless as I try to put the information out there and do the work to try to dominate another team offensively.”

Steverson can’t swing a bat for Cabrera (13 extra-base

hits), Ramirez, Carlos Sanchez (.176 average), Tyler Flowers (.224), Adam Eaton (.251), LaRoche (.233), Gordon Beckham (.205) and Conor Gillaspie (.245), but he looks at those numbers and feels responsible.

“Well, you have to – to an extent,” he said. “It’s baseball, so you have to recognize that someTodd times you got Steverson beat and the guy on the other side was better. Other times you carry the weight because you thought they would be better than the other guy and it didn’t happen.

“But yeah, when you’re the hitting coach and they’re not getting the results out of it, you want better for them. Not for me but for them – they’re

the ones who make the world go around in the game.”

Hitting coaches are easy targets and get fired when teams underperform. Fans see a hitter chase a pitch in the dirt and wonder, ‘What are they teaching this guy?’ If only hitting were that easy.

“When a team is hitting, it goes unnoticed,” Steverson said. “Maybe some subpar performances and it’s, ‘What’s he doing?’ It’s not like I’m coming here to screw these guys up so they lose ballgames. Not a person on this staff that does that.

It’s part of the game.

“The bad part is it’s happened to a couple guys who’ve had history of doing better.

I’ve always said a .300 hitter finds a way to hit .300 and a 5.00 ERA pitcher finds a way to have a 5.00 ERA. I still believe that and you can’t sell anybody short this early.”

There are recent trends that are encouraging for Steverson.

The team (.241 this season) is hitting .275 with 21 doubles and 10 homers in the past nine games; Cabrera is hitting .320 with five doubles and two homers over his past 21; Sanchez is 9 for 29 with three doubles in his past nine; Eaton is hitting .304 in his past 18; and Flowers has homered in each of his past three.

But will they sustain it?

“There aren’t too many players who haven’t gone through a slump or a bump in the road,” Steverson said.

It’s Steverson’s job to keep them on the right path.

“A lot of people say hitting coach is one of the toughest things in the game because hitting is the toughest thing,” he said. “People forget how tough hitting is. That said, it’s my job to make them get better.”

NEW YORK – More than 3,000 miles from where his old friend just won a cage match with the front office for MLB’s undisputed manager heavyweight title, Joe Maddon on Thursday morning enjoyed some post-magician banter with writers – this week’s bottle of red wine over his left shoulder and a glass nearby.

“I only want to do my job,” the Cubs manager said. “I want to do my job and then leave and then go have a glass of wine or ride my bike in the morning and don’t worry about making a ton of phone calls and player personnel decisions or whatever.

“I believe in checks and balances.”

Whatever issues the Cubs’ rebuilding process faces through this pivot season or beyond, Maddon seems sure it won’t face the kind of manager-front office power struggle that embroiled the Los Angeles Angels until bringing down

general manager Jerry DiPoto this week.

Maddon remains a close friend of Angels’ 16th-year manager Mike Scioscia – who had battled DiPoto when he became Scioscia’s third GM in 2012.

Maddon spent six years on Scioscia’s coaching staff. He respects Scioscia. And if there is one manager in baseball who rivals Scioscia’s power and voice in the game, it is Maddon.

But Maddon is not Scioscia.

And that could be as big a key for the Cubs’ success over the next few years as payroll and pitching, considering the multi-year, multi-million-dollar statures and egos now layered into Cubs’ leadership to finish this high-stakes plan.

“The least attractive item would be for me to have so much power that I would not have to listen to [others],” Maddon said.

Like his boss, Theo Epstein, the Cubs’ first-year manager does not lack for ego, confidence or strong opinions.

Lloyd leads U.S. into final Big games bring out big performances from midfielder

By STEVEN GOFF The Washington Post MONTREAL – Sunday, as kickoff approaches for the Women’s World Cup final, U.S. national team players will aim one last smile or nod toward family members and friends gathered at sold-out BC Place in Vancouver.

Midfielder Carli Lloyd probably won’t see anyone, but a sibling might attend the game without telling her.

It’s the way she wants it.

Amid 51,000 spectators, Lloyd wants to be alone. This is not to imply selfishness; rather, it’s the veteran midfielder’s way of going, as she said early in the tournament, “off the grid” to remain attentive to the needs of a team that has waited 16 years for a third global trophy.

In the hours before Tuesday’s 2-0 semifinal victory over Germany, family and friends of the players turned a Marriott lobby into a festival of red, white and blue replica jerseys. Locating a “Lloyd 10” was like trying to find a spare ticket to the World Cup final.

“They understand,” said Lloyd, 32, a south Jersey native and Rutgers grad who plays for the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League. “If I come home with the medal, we can celebrate together.”

For two weeks, the U.S. squad did not appear on course for any celebrations, aside from maybe a third-place half-smile.

Although they finished first in Group D without losing any of three matches, Lloyd and the attack were disconnected and unproductive. They were grinding out results and just getting by in a difficult quartet.

The first half of the roundof-16 match against Colombia brought more frustration for both her and the team. But after gaining a player advantage and taking the lead, Lloyd secured victory with a penalty kick – the first of three consecutive games in which she scored.

Four days later, during her 200th international appearance, Lloyd placed a 12-yard header into the right corner early in the second half against China to propel the Americans into the semifinals. And in the showdown with Germany, Lloyd converted a controversial penalty kick in the 69th minute and assisted on Kelley O’Hara’s clincher 15 minutes later.

“These are the moments I live for,” said Lloyd, the American scoring record-holder for a player who served exclusively as a Carli Lloyd midfielder (66).

“Mentally, I have been trained to become a fierce competitor, live for challenges and never quit, no matter what the scenario is.”

Big matches have brought out big performances. In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, her extra-time goal against Brazil won the gold medal.

Four years later in London, she scored twice in the final against Japan and became the first player, male or female, to score winning goals in consecutive gold medal games.

This summer, however, Lloyd and Lauren Holiday were not in sync in the heart of the U.S. midfield – an explanation, in part, for a clunky attack that did not score a goal in the run of play in either the second and third group matches. (Abby Wambach’s volley of a corner kick against Nigeria was the lone strike.)

After surviving the Colombia scare, coach Jill Ellis made tactical adjustments that benefitted Lloyd. With Holiday serving a yellow-card suspension, Ellis inserted Morgan Brian to do the dirty work behind Lloyd.

The move liberated Lloyd to express herself in the attack and provided the freedom of movement and improvisation. The team performed with greater fluidity and confidence.

In the Germany game, Ellis took it a step further, instructing both Brian and Holiday to play behind Lloyd.

The team’s first-half display against FIFA’s top-ranked team was its finest of the competition, putting the Germans on their heels and setting the terms for the entirety of the match.

Lloyd floated into available space and launched forays before moving to the left flank late in the game. From there, she took the initiative with the ball at her feet, rushing to the end line and crossing to O’Hara for a leaping volley in the 84th minute.

“We have so much trust and faith in Carli, and she has so much self-confidence,” Wambach said.

Early in the tournament, Lloyd’s self-confidence was questioned by her former coach, Pia Sundhage, who oversaw Sweden’s disappointing performance this summer.

Lloyd said she was confused and, although she denied it, her initial body language suggested Sundhage’s blunt remarks stung.

Her response on the field was not demonstrative; she focused on steering the team – and herself – to the championship game for the second straight tournament. Four years ago in Germany, the effort ended with defeat to Japan in a penalty kick tiebreaker.

The last time the United States won the championship, in 1999, Lloyd was six days short of her 17th birthday.

Earlier in the tournament, she attended matches at the Meadowlands.

“I remember watching at Giants Stadium, thinking to myself this would be a dream come true to be a part of a team like this,” she said. “Never did I really think it was possible, let alone doing it for 10 years on this team.”

Fulfillment is less than a week away.

“We have really good momentum going into this,” Lloyd said. “I have a really confident feeling in us winning it.”

Bray said when the starting pitcher gives the team a good outing, it lets everyone relax and makes it easier to do their job.

“When you have good starting pitching, they give you a chance to win every game,” Bray said. “We’re scrapping out runs when we need to, playing good defense, and if we keep doing those small things, we like our chances to keep this going and make the playoffs.”

Any player who has put on a Cougars uniform this season has gotten adjusted pret-

ty quickly to Grudzielanek’s mentality at the helm. The second-half roster turnover brought a handful of new faces to the Cougars, including one of the team’s 2015 draft picks, Quinnton Mack.

“These guys better jump on board quick,” Grudzielanek said, “because we expect to win every single day.

That’s the mentality of this bunch and they are rolling right now. With the kind of guys we brought in, we feel that we shouldn’t have too much of a worry about them fitting right in.”

St. Peter Church makes a difference in Haiti KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – In June, Father Martins Emeh, pastor of St. Peter Church in Geneva, and some members of the Hope for Haitians organization traveled to Haiti to participate in the organization’s project.

Hope for Haitians was founded more than a decade ago by local Catholic businessmen in Rockford to help the poverty-stricken people of Haiti, states a news release from St. Peter.

The organization engages in acts of charity, such as the construction of homes and wells, and the education of children in Haiti.

This past Lenten season, St. Peter Church raised funds for the construction of eight homes as a Lenten project. Parishioners collectively raised money for five homes, and three parish families each donated a home as well.

Members of the Hope for Haitians team frequently visit the communities they help to build.

Emeh was pleased to be part of this year’s visit to Haiti, and to see that two of the eight houses have already been built, and the other six are currently under construction, states the release.

$10K prize awarded in business contest Competition asked entrants to plan for future growth KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The first Poised for Growth Business Plan Competition, organized by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Elgin Community College, recently celebrated its first winner.

The celebration took place June 23 at 25N Coworking, located at 25 N. Third St., Geneva.

“The purpose of the competition was to get existing businesses to plan for their

company’s growth in a deliberate way, and demonstrate their ability to manage that growth responsibly for three years,” said Sybil Ege, ECC business analyst and the Small Business Development Center director who organized the competition, in a release.

Michelle Lipinski of Rubino Engineering Inc. in Elgin took first place in the competition.

The company was awarded a $10,000 cash prize and a consulting engagement offered through the Fox Valley Entrepreneurship Center valued at $5,000. The prize money was provided through donations from local organizations.

The competition consisted of three phases. Phase one confirmed applicant eligibility.

All who qualified progressed to phase two, where owners submitted a written plan detailing their tactics for the future growth of their business over the next three

years.

In the final phase, the top 10 contestants presented a brief presentation to a panel of four judges on June 9.

The scores from phases two and three were added together to determine a final score for each of the contestants.

The Small Business Development Center hopes to interest three to five times more businesses to apply for next year’s competition, which will be promoted at a more regional level.

The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Elgin Community College provides counseling services and business workshops to start-ups and existing small businesses.

Treatment of varicose veins depends on their severity Dear Doctor K: I have varicose veins. For a while, they were just unsightly. But recently, my leg has started to ache. What does treatment involve?

Dear Reader: Varicose veins occur when veins that lie just below the skin’s surface become swollen with too much blood.

They usually form in the legs and appear blue, swollen, kinked or twisted. Veins return blood back to the heart. When you use the leg muscles to walk or run, they also help pump blood up toward your heart. When blood moves upward toward the heart, gravity is pulling the blood downward away from your heart. (That’s not true, of course, if you’re lying flat, or standing on your head.)

To offset the pull of gravity, our veins have multiple little valves inside of them. These valves open when blood is pushed up toward the heart. But they close when blood is pulled downward by gravity, stopping the downward flow. In a varicose vein, valves don’t close properly and blood gets pulled back down inside the veins. This causes pressure to increase inside the veins, and that results in swelling. The pressure inside the vein also

Varicose veins often run in families. Pregnancy, regularly standing for long periods and obesity also increase the risk.

When varicose veins cause symptoms, they often include: • A dull ache, pressure or heaviness in the legs; • Swollen feet and ankles; • Itching skin near the damaged veins.

You can prevent symptom flare-ups by periodically lying down or sitting with your legs elevated above the level of your chest. Also, wear support or compression stockings when you walk or stand for long periods of time. The stockings prevent blood from pooling in the veins, and prevent leg swelling and strain on the valves.

A doctor can treat varicose veins with sclerotherapy. This involves injecting an irritating substance into the affected vein,

causing it to scar and shut down.

Laser therapy can treat the smallest varicose veins. More severe symptoms may require surgery.

One option is vein stripping and ligation. The abnormal veins are tied off and pulled out of the body through small cuts in the skin. (I’ve put an illustration of this procedure on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Another outpatient surgical procedure, ambulatory phlebectomy, also removes veins through small skin incisions. It is performed under local anesthesia (you are awake).

It involves smaller incisions, and therefore smaller scars. You can walk right after the procedure is over, but need to wear compression stockings. Another new treatment uses laser or high-frequency radio waves to seal off abnormal veins. These treatments can relieve symptoms, but they don’t guarantee that new varicose veins won’t develop in the future.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 19-year-old female and an only child. I recently had to move back home due to lack of finances, after a year of living on my own. I had moved out to have some independence because I wasn’t allowed to do any of the things that normal teens are allowed to do.
