Oberweis challenges Durbin to debate

By EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, Republican nominee for U.S. Senate released a statement Tuesday challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin to seven statewide debates.

The debates would be centered around job creation, the Internal Revenue Service scandal and campaign money donated by a firm charged with sexual harassment, according to a news release.

“I believe our country is better served when we have citizen legislators rather than career legislators,” Oberweis said.

Car and Bike show to raise money for Mooseheart

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com MOOSEHEART – The organizers of the second annual Mooseheart Car and Bike Show hope to raise more money this year to benefit Mooseheart, a residential home and school for children and teens in need.

“We raised $3,500 last year for Mooseheart,” said Jodie Rogers, a member of the Fox Valley Corvette Club, which puts on the show. “We want to beat that amount this year.”

The show will begin at 8 a.m. July 12 at the Mooseheart campus at Mooseheart Road and Route 31.

The rain date is July 13.

Registration will be from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is $20 a show vehicle. Voting will be from 1 to 2 p.m., and awards will be given at 3 p.m.

Awards will be presented in a number of categories, including best in show and Mooseheart choice.

As part of this year’s event, there will be a raffle, with prizes including restaurant certificates and trips. Rogers said the group is looking for more businesses to donate prizes, such as local restaurants.

“We are in desperate need of local restaurants,” she said. “We will be accepting donations all the way up to Wednesday.”

Last year, more than 120 cars were on display in the show, Rogers said.

This year’s show will include classic and custom vehicles, street rods, trucks and motorcycles.

Durbin spokesman, Ron Holmes, said Durbin always has debated challengers and that both sides would work toward a process for future debates.

Holmes said Durbin has continually fought for the middle class and would support an increase in the minimum wage. While Oberweis sees an increase in the minimum wage as a “job killer,” Holmes said, Durbin supports an increase and views the decision as an “issue of fair-

ness.”

Holmes also called Oberweis’s campaign shift from “ducking” debates to seeking confrontation an “interesting dynamic.” He also pointed out that Oberweis’s campaign spokesman, Dan Curry, worked for the primary opponent, Republican Doug Truax.

In the news release, Oberweis requested three of the seven debates be held outside of Chicago. One of the debates would be co-hosted by a liberal organization and one co-hosted by a conservative organization to allow for a diverse set of questions, according to the release.

LOCAL BRIEFS Rep. Hultgren sponsors bill U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, who represents the 14th Congressional District, has become one of four original cosponsors of HR 4874, the Searching for and Cutting Regulations that are Unnecessarily Burdensome – or SCRUB – Act of 2014, at the specific request of the House Judiciary Committee, states a news release from Hultgren’s office.

HR 4874 incorporates key elements of his own bill, HR 309, the Regulatory Sunset and Review Act, which calls for establishing a process by which federal agencies can sunset obsolete, duplicative and conflicting regulations.

“Too much regulation, especially outdated regulation, means higher prices, lower wages and fewer jobs for hardworking Americans, not to mention less overall American economic growth,” said Hultgren in the release. “Federal regulations now impose an estimated burden of $1.86 trillion on our economy – that’s roughly $15,000 per U.S. household.

This is simply unacceptable to the families in my district who are finding their incomes are not keeping up with rising prices. The last thing they need is more burdens on their budget.”

As of the end of 2013, the Code of Federal Regulations contained 175,000 pages of regulations in 235

volumes.

The cost of federal regulations, 11.5 percent of America’s 2012 GDP, is more than $300 billion higher than combined individual and corporate federal income taxes and equivalent to 85 percent of U.S. corporate profits in 2013, states the release.

Railway safety seminar set MAPLE PARK – The Maple Park Police Department is planning a railway safety seminar for 6 p.m. July 9 at the Maple Park Civic Center, 302 Willow St., Maple Park.

In May, Parker Wolfsmith, a 14-yearold Kaneland Harter Middle School eighth-grader, died when he was hit by a train at the Liberty Street train crossing in Maple Park.

Josh Salisbury, who helps coordinate activities at the police department’s weekly drop-in center, said all are welcome to attend the seminar, which will feature Jim Magner of Union Pacific. The event will be geared toward both children and parents, Salisbury said. It will last from 60 to 90 minutes.

Board will vote on Happy Independence medical marijuana Day! zoning regulations

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After multiple ongoing discussions about how Kane County’s zoning regulations will address the state’s medical marijuana pilot program, the County Board is ready to act.

The Executive Committee on Wednesday placed proposed amendments to the Kane County zoning ordinance on next week’s County Board agenda.

The amendments focus on where medical marijuana cultivation and dispensing centers can locate in the county’s unincorporated areas.

Current proposed rules for the state Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act, which became law on Jan. 1, would allow up to two dispensing centers in Kane County and one cultivation center in each state police district, Mark VanKerkhoff, the county’s development and community services director, has said.

Kane County is in a police district with DuPage, DeKalb, McHenry and Lake counties.

Under the county’s proposed rules, cultivation cen-

ters would be allowed in certain farming, business and industrial districts.

Dispensing organizations would be confined to business districts.

Additionally, the centers would be an “interim special use” granted for no more than five years specifically for the dispensing and cultivation of controlled substances licensed by the state.

The medical marijuana pilot program is for four years.

VanKerkhoff has said the interim special use would be subject to a public hearing and require County Board approval.

The Executive Committee briefly discussed the proposed amendments before moving them forward. Member Brian Pollock, D-Aurora, asked if the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the language and was told it had.

The Zoning Board of Appeals held a public hearing on the proposed changes last month. No comments from the public were reported.

The County Board meeting is set for 9:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva.

The Kane County Health Department sent a news release notifying residents that Oriya Organics LLC is voluntarily recalling “Oriya Organics Superfood Protein Medley,” which contains organic sprouted chia seed powder, because of possible health risks related to salmonella contamination.

Although no illnesses related to this product have been reported, it was sold directly to customers in Illinois and other states through the Internet. It was sold at retailers in Texas and Louisiana, the release stated.

A POPULAR DESTINATION Organizations target Kane County Fairgrounds for their events

S

T. CHARLES – Lisa Diersen – one of the founders of a horse festival that debuted in St. Charles last year – said there was no question about the venue organizers hoped to use: the Kane County Fairgrounds.

“It was always the goal to be in the fairgrounds because they have the size that allows us to grow, and we hope to grow into a pretty large festival,” Diersen said.

The Festival of the Horse and Drum nabbed an August weekend at the fairgrounds – a feat that could be described as lucky considering the number of events the fairground hosts throughout the year.

With so many regular customers – including the Kane County Flea Market – Kane County Fair Board President Larry Breon said it can be difficult for a new organization to book facilities at the fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

“People have a tough time finding a time for the usability,” he said. “Just about almost every weekend is booked, and sometimes multiply booked.”

Breon, whose history with the fairgrounds started with his involvement in 4-H and spans 40-plus years, said those who haven’t visited the property recently might remember it as it used to be – “dirty, dusty and not real modern.”

But upgrades about five years ago brought the Prairie Events Center – an air-conditioned exhibit hall that includes a full kitchen and space suitable for weddings – to the property as well as amenities for motor homes, including an independent bathroom and shower area

“That kind of brought us up to date on facilities,” he said. “People wanted a nice facility.”

Wanda Robinson of the Kane County Flea Market said the Prairie Events Center provides more space for dealers who would rather be

inside than in a barn.

“That building alone houses over 100 dealers in there,” she said.

Amy Egolf, executive director of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau, said it is an asset to have three expo centers – the fairgrounds, the DuPage Expo Center and the Mega Center at Pheasant

Run Resort.

Nationally, she said, tourism numbers are up, but that increase is being driven by the transient market. The group market – which includes meetings and events for associations and corporate, social, military, education, religious and fraternal organizations – continues to lag.

“Having three expo centers is a boon to greater St. Charles, as well as the state as it allows us to be competitive with other destinations suited to serving the group market,” Egolf said.

As for the Festival of the

Horse and Drum, Diersen said the fairgrounds has facilities to meet the needs of its various activities.

The festival is set for mid-August, but those wanting to check out the fairgrounds sooner can attend the 146th annual Kane County Fair, which begins July 16.

Breon said the five-day event will give people a chance to experience the modern fairgrounds if they haven’t already.

“A lot of people haven’t experienced it for a number of years,” he said. “I think they’d have a good time.”

She was being treated for depression and anxiety and Lewis began exchanging text messages with her that contained “sexually inappropriate and/or unprofessional messages.” These included: “Oh, I forgot Your (sic) on the bad girl list. If you miss your appointment, you’ll have to bribe me.”

Later, he apologized in a text message and offered to help her find another doctor, according to the investigator’s report.

Lewis’ office recently sought news coverage from the Kane County Chronicle regarding a planned expansion of its services, according to a spokeswoman for the office.

GENEVA – A Geneva doctor’s license has been temporarily suspended by state regulators, who allege that he had inappropriate sexual relations with several patients and that his “actions constitute an immediate danger to the public.”

The license of Dr. Mark G. Lewis was suspended by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation on June 26, records show, alleging he engaged in “sexually inappropriate conduct with multiple patients of his practice, as well as inappropriate prescribing of controlled substances to numerous individuals.”

According to the regulatory agency, both his physician and surgeon license and controlled substance license were suspended, pending a hearing July 9 before an administrative law judge and the Medical Disciplinary Board.

A message left with his answering service was not returned.

According to the charges, a patient admitted that she engaged in a sexual relationship with Lewis while he continued to provide care and treatment for her. Lewis admitted to a state investigator to having a sexual relationship with a former patient in his practice – and then hired her to work in his office, American Family Doctor, 2197 Blackberry Drive, Geneva – while he continued to prescribe controlled substance medications for her, according to the charges.

A review of the patient/ employee’s medical records show Lewis prescribed “highly addictive and abused controlled substances such as Norco and Xanax for patient ... knowing patient ... was abusing controlled substances, and forging respondent’s prescriptions,” according to the charges.

patient included Valium, Oxycontin, Vicodin, Percocet, Opana ER and Demerol, according to the petition to suspend Lewis’s license.

According to the professional regulatory department’s investigation report, Lewis had “issued or authorized various prescriptions for highly addictive and abused conDr. Mark G. trolled substances for inLewis dividuals who were not his patients.”

A St. Charles woman reported to police that she was sexually assaulted by Lewis at his house, according to the complaint. Lewis’ DNA was matched to DNA taken from anal swabs from the St. Charles woman as part of a rape kit, according to the complaint.

On June 9, the Illinois State Police Division of Forensic Services issued a lab report showing that the semen identified in the anal swabs matched Lewis’s DNA profile, according to the charges.

Lewis denied having a sexual relationship with the woman in an interview with the regulatory department’s investigator, according to the charges.

The woman was dating the son of Lewis’ girlfriend when she consulted him about a stomach problem, according to the complaint. While at his house for a party in November 2012, she drank two glasses of wine and a glass of whiskey and woke up in one of Lewis’ girlfriend’s children’s rooms wearing only a tank top and sweater and naked from the waist down, according to the investigator’s report.

Lewis was lying shirtless next to her and asked her not to tell his girlfriend what happened, according to the complaint.

He offered her a Xanax pill, and she fell back asleep and woke up the next morning with pain in her anal area, according to the complaint. She

District 303 employees win separate state contests “I’ll do what I can to brighten up [students’] day and turn things around.”

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Even though St. Charles School District 303 employees Bryan Johnson and Ken Farley both have experience in state competitions, they each second-guessed their final placement at events in June.

They were both surprised when their names were called as first-place finishers.

“When they announced my name, I about had a heart attack,” Johnson said.

Johnson, a school district bus driver, won the Illinois Association for Pupil Transportation “School Bus Roadeo.” Farley, the district’s manager of vehicle maintenance and repair, won the association’s Technicians Competition. Each event was held June 19 in Peoria.

The two will go on to represent the district at the next level of each competition.

Bryan Johnson School District 303 bus driver Johnson and Farley said they each love their roles in the district.

Johnson, who has been with the district for 12 years, said he has known since middle school that he wanted to be a bus driver.

He remembers how one of the bus drivers, Harold Helm, made him smile, laugh and reassured him everything was going to be OK when he struggled.

Johnson said his work as a bus driver is paying forward the kindness he received from Helm. Every year, Johnson makes sure to learn the names of the students on his routes and is always quick to give a high-five or a fist bump.

Farley has been with the district for 17 years.

Before that he operated his own auto repair business, Farley Automotive, for 20 years in Saumonauk, where he still lives.

Farley said there isn’t really any prep work he can do to prepare for his national competition in November.

He advanced to nationals for two years straight in 2008 and 2009, and he finished in fourth place both times.

“It’s just knowledge of skills gained from years of studying and experience,” Farley said.

The annual men’s golf tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles is seeing a few changes this year. For the first time, the tournament is being conducted over two weekends instead of three.

It’s the opportunity to bring your A game, to play against peers and to take home bragging rights about competing in one of the oldest and most challenging tournaments in the area.

Instituted by former Pottawatomie Golf Course manager and PGA pro Jim Wheeler, the men’s tournament is a testament to Wheeler’s legacy, said current course manager and PGA pro Ron Skubisz.

It’s also a tournament that has undergone a fundamental change in format. For the first time this year, the tournament is being conducted over two weekends instead of three.

In past years, the first weekend was devoted to a qualifying round based upon score.

It would be followed the second weekend by classification placement and the third

weekend by match play. This year, the initial qualifying round is being eliminated. Golfers will be admitted to the tournament based upon their Chicago District Golf Association or U.S. Golf Association official handicap.

“We found that committing to three consecutive weekends of golf is getting harder and harder for players to do,” Skubisz said.

It’s also difficult for the course to close to regular players, season pass holders and other visitors for three weekends in the middle of the summer.

Chicago’s golf-playing season is short even in the best of times, but – in recent years – wet, cold springs and the early onset of winters have compacted the season even

more.

In any year, the tournament is unique for its final match play round. Using a scoring system whereby a player earns a point for each hole in which he has outperformed his opponents, match play tournaments are relatively rare, according to Skubisz.

“We’re not the only golf course to do so, but there are very few courses that do offer match play events. It is unique, and we wish to carry it on,” Skubisz said.

Another tournament change is that – for the first time this year – the tournament is open to players who are nonpark district residents. Any player with the aforementioned CDGA or USGA handicap is qualified to play.

The registration deadline for the tournament is July 13 or whenever a full 96-player field is reached.

The registration fee of $60 includes green fees.

Players will be vying for a golfer’s choice package, yet another tournament change from previous years.

Instead of awarding a traditional tournament trophy, this year’s prizes can include everything from a golf club to a set of irons to other golf equipment.

“Trophies are always important, but our ultimate goal is to make it a great golf tournament,” Skubisz said. “It has a huge history. It’s one of the traditions of the course.”

Motorists should expect heavy traffic delays on west side KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia has planned its annual fireworks Sky Concert for Friday. Observation areas for the show will be at Engstrom Park on Main Street and Millview Drive and the Batavia High School athletic practice fields.

There will be food vendors and live bands, which will start at 5 p.m. and will be on Millview Drive and Main Street. The Sky Concert is set to start at 9:30 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.

“After the show, motorists leaving the event area or just

driving through Batavia on the city’s west side will experience heavy traffic delays,” according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.

The roads that will be the most impacted will be Randall Road from Main Street to Fabyan Parkway, West Wilson Street and Main Street near Batavia High School and Route 31 in the downtown area after the fireworks show is over, police said.

All of those routes will have barricades and detours around the event site, the news release said. The police department recommended that motorists allow plenty of time to get into and out of the area.

Alcoholic beverages, sparklers, fireworks and dogs are prohibited from all of the event areas, police said.

GENEVA – The Geneva Police Department want the public’s help to solve a burglary that occurred during the June 22 Swedish Days Parade, according to a news release.

Geneva police received a report of a burglary on an unsecured school bus during the parade, which started at about 1 p.m. June 22. The bus, which was used to transport the South Shore Drill

Team to the parade, was burglarized between 12:40 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., according to the release.

After dropping off the drill team at the parade’s starting point, the bus was driven to the Geneva Train Depot’s south permit lot. At this time, the bus was left unattended and unsecured, the release stated.

Four purses or bags that contained electronic equipment and money were reported stolen. After exiting the bus, the offender left in

an unidentified vehicle and proceeded to discard the purses and bags, police said.

A direction of travel for the offender was not listed in the release. Geneva police were not immediately available Wednesday afternoon for comment on the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the burglary, saw any suspicious activity during the incident timeframe or has other pertinent information, is urged to call Geneva Police Detective Sgt. Michael Frieders at 630-232-4736.

ST. CHARLES – The Tookula Student Choir of Minden, Germany, will visit St. Charles from Monday through Thursday as part of the Blue Lake International Exchange Program, according to a news release.

Members of the 60-voice choir will stay in private homes while visiting St. Charles, Jenny Santos, chairwoman of the committee that is making the arrangements for the group’s visit said, according to the release.

While in St. Charles, Tookula will perform two concerts.

Tookula’s first concert will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

“Thanks to the generosity of Arcada owner Ron Onesti, this concert will be free; however, donations to the Thompson

Middle School Fine Arts Booster will be accepted at the door,” Santos said, according to the release. “The program will include folklore and songs from all over the world, including a short video presentation about the choir’s homeland.”

The second concert will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles. This concert will feature Tookula and Thompson Middle School’s Bella Voce, which is comprised of current and past members.

“This concert is free, also, and sponsored by the Thompson Middle School Fine Arts Boosters, so donations will be gratefully accepted,” Santos said. “The program will include sacred and secular songs from all over the world.”

ST. CHARLES – An attorney representing a petting zoo owner accused of animal cruelty and neglect will be able to issue subpoenas connected with Robert Sauceda, Kane County’s former animal control interim director.

Kane County prosecutors withdrew their objection Wednesday to Jamie Wombacher’s court filing in May seeking all reports and investigation documents on Sauceda. Wombacher represents Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin.

In March, Sauceda handled the removal of some 94 sick and starved animals

from the Mini Zoo Crew, a petting zoo owned by Fiebelkorn of Elgin, most of which were kept on a rented farm in Hampshire.

“The details of the investigation into Mr. Sauceda’s suspension and Stacy subsequent Fiebelkorn resignation could prove vital to the instant matter, as they could impact Mr. Sauceda’s credibility, bias his ability to conduct a proper investigation of the defendant or other issues,” Wombacher asserted in court papers in May. Wombacher said she would narrow the scope of

her request for subpoenas in an updated filing.

The Kane County Chronicle filed a request under the state’s open records law seeking documents related to Sauceda. The request still is pending.

Sauceda resigned May 7 amid an ongoing personnel investigation. County officials did not provide specifics regarding his resignation.

Feeling the burn ’Tis the season of picnics, parades ... and sunburns.

I’ve recently gotten my inaugural burn of the season.

For those of us of a certain shade, it is nearly impossible to avoid. Sure, we all try to cut down on unnecessary exposure, but even a short amount of time can leave us with a red tint on our cheeks.

Call my skin what you want – porcelain, ivory, sensitive, Irish, delicate – there’s no doubt that I am just downright pale. Over the years, I’ve been forced to become the queen of SPF, master the art of post-burn treatment and even learn (the hard way) that people like me should stay away from pastel colors, such as lavender (especially in the form of bathing suits). I’ve always been jealous of those girls who come back from a spring break trip to the beach with glowing skin, even though I know that tanning isn’t really that healthy. While they can soak up the rays no problem, I have to wear sunscreen all the time.

When using sunscreen, it is imperative that you use the correct one. I like using the highest SPF I can find. It seems safer to use the “sport” varieties that are usually water resistant, just in case.

Spray sunscreen is a definite no-no because it never seems to actually work. I remember as a kid using a purple foaming variety, whose awesome factor far outweighed its actual protection.

As the time comes to put sunscreen to skin, it’s best to have someone else help out, especially for your back/ neck. Make sure to cover more then just what skin shows – the worst of my sunburns happen around the edges of my clothes on areas I thought were covered up.

Plus, farmer tans are just really awkward.

They’re easy to care for and can save you money in the long run. (Mine, by the way, is not in my garden, but in a lovely pot on my porch.)

Besides, all the cool kids have aloe plants!

Tightness and peeling aside, the worst part is how other people react. You’d think I’d have shaved my head by the comments I get.

It’s amazing how many people believe they are telling you breaking news about your face peeling when they first see you. Having a sunburn hurts enough without the constant comparisons to seafood and a certain rednosed reindeer.

While I wouldn’t exactly call getting sunburns a “habit,” I have the unfortunate luck of getting them a lot.

Sometimes, they really are unavoidable. I’m always careful to take note of the freckles and moles on my skin, and go the dermatologist occasionally to have them checked out.

I’m a little grateful in the end that I have pale skin, because it makes me more aware of sun safety. Despite my desire for a golden tone, I’ve stayed far away from gross spray tans and tanning beds.

If you’re planning on spending some time outside this summer, don’t forget to lather up!

Court ruling could be beginning of end for public unions BLOOMBERG NEWS On Monday, in Harris v.

Quinn, the Supreme Court made the right move in finding that Illinois home health care workers, as “partial public employees,” can’t be compelled to pay union fees, as other public employees are. The ruling follows a 2012 Supreme Court decision limiting the rights of unions to increase their fees without proper notice. And it sets up the question – already working its way through the federal courts – of whether a 1977 court decision, Abood v.

Detroit Board of Education, which upheld government’s authority to compel government employees to pay union dues, should be overturned.

In about half the states, public employees are re-

quired to pay the fees, though they can opt out of paying for their union’s political campaigns and lobbying activity. The home health care workers who brought the suit argued that any mandatory union fee violates their First Amendment rights, because petitioning the government – including lobbying over work rules and benefits – is inherently political. A government employee, the argument goes, who supports giving workers the right to choose a 401(k)style retirement plan instead of a traditional public pension should not be forced to support a union that opposes it.

The Supreme Court could have overturned Abood by ruling that any forced payment violates workers’ First Amendment rights. But it narrowly tailored its deci-

sion while casting aspersion on the 1970s-era precedent.

The majority called Abood an “anomaly” resting on “questionable foundations,” charging that the 1977 court had “seriously erred” in its reading of precedents, which it “fundamentally misunderstood.”

The very first sentence of the Harris decision is its most important: This case, it states, “presents the question whether the First Amendment permits a state to compel personal care providers to subsidize speech on matters of public concern by a union that they do not wish to join or support.” Swap out “personal care providers” for “public employees,” and it is difficult to see why the same First Amendment protections should be any different.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Batavia yoga teacher featured in new book

atavia yoga teacher Linda Karl believes that yoga can help a person in every part of his or her life.

Karl, the founder of Metta Yoga, is one of only two Chicago-area yoga teachers featured in the book “Conversations With Modern Yogis.”

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Karl about the book.

Eric Schelkopf: You had your first public OM in 1973 with beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Can you tell me about that?

Linda Karl: Well, I was in junior college in Chicago. At the time it was called Southwest College, but now it’s called Richard J. Daley College.

Allen Ginsberg came to do a reading of his poem “Howl.” He was a Buddhist, and we all just kind of sat around and chanted.

Schelkopf: Was that a life-changing experience?

Karl: I don’t know about changing my life. But it was interesting. Allen Ginsberg and his writings were very popular with the counter-culture at that time.

After the poetry reading, a bunch of us went out to a party with him. Everybody just kind of sat around and hung on his every word, so to speak. It was pretty cool.

Schelkopf: Of course, you are featured in this book, “Conversations With Modern Yogis.”

Karl: About three years ago, I got an email from the book’s author, Zubin Schroff, saying that he was interested in interviewing me because of my yoga blog.

He wanted to get different voices that are kind of outside of the status quo of yoga, as it’s currently taught.

He liked my voice. He’s actually the director of a yoga studio out in California, and what he did was drive cross country to interview everybody in the book.

Schelkopf: What did he like about your approach to yoga?

Karl: Because I’m not the status quo,

and he said that what I write about needs to be heard.

He also called me a “fierce voice in the yoga blogosphere.”

Schelkopf: What do you try to do with yoga?

How do you think you are different than other yoga teachers?

Karl: For one, I teach out of my house.

I’ve also been to India eight times, and I study at a particular school in India that was started by the son of the father of modern yoga.

The style of yoga I teach is classical, traditional yoga. It’s all about changing your life. So it’s not gym yoga.

It’s not just about the physical postures. It’s about becoming healthy and having a clear mind, quieting the mind.

I work with trauma survivors, from soldiers to sexual assault and domestic violence survivors. I used to teach at the Mutual Ground domestic violence shelter in Aurora for about 10 years.

I believe that all yoga is therapeutic, if it is applied correctly and beneficially.

Schelkopf: It sounds like you believe that yoga can touch all areas of one’s life.

Karl: Exactly.

Schelkopf: How does yoga change a person’s mindset?

Karl: Authentic yoga helps you change your view of yourself and your life.

I work with people who may have anxiety attacks, or may be depressed for whatever reason.

A consistent practice of yoga and breathwork and meditation absolutely changes their lives. They are not as stressed or depressed any more. They can Photo provided handle things a lot better.

In the fading summer light, soft breezes swept across my face as the encapsulating sounds of rustling tree leaves calmed my spirit. I began to relax with ease while nestled into an Adirondack chair situated on a wrap-around porch, where the smell of timber from its refurbished planks was still fresh. This is how my experience at Patten House Restaurant and Bar began.

As my mystery dining companion arrived, I hollered from the porch, “Welcome to my humble abode.”

Of course I was referring to lumber man George Patten’s stately, multi-level former home, located in Geneva’s historic district.

Built in 1857, The Patten House underwent a well-deserved renovation that began in 2013. It opened in June, after being transformed into a multi-dining-room lounge and restaurant, serving New Orleans’ Cajun-style cuisine.

A fitting menu, as the structure – from the outside – is reminiscent of an old plantation home while also emanating a lodge-like quality. While at The Patten House, I felt as though I had escaped to another place in a simpler time.

Everything has been redone with grace, to a standard of excellence and while keeping true to the home’s historic charm.

After a quick, self-guided tour of the home, a necessity upon an inaugural visit (and trust me, you will be coming back), we decided to eat al fresco at one of the restaurant’s two outdoor patios.

Appetizers cost between $8 and $14, and entrees cost between $18 and $29. Entrees come with a choice of soup or house salad and garlic cheddar biscuits.

We started with the Crab Cakes and Grits ($12), two jumbo lump crab cakes with a side of stone-ground grits soaked in red pepper aioli.

The band will perform with Sugar Ray and Uncle Kracker on Sunday, July 6, as part of the “Under The Sun Tour” at RiverEdge Park, 360 N. Broadway St., Aurora.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Blues Traveler drummer Brendan Hill, a founding member of the band.

Schelkopf: Do you think you complement each other’s sound?

Hill: I think so. We were all [on] the radio back in the ’90s. There was kind of [a] scene back in the ’90s, so I think we do complement each other. Blues Traveler is bringing the jam band element into this tour.

Schelkopf: Of course, you are a founding member. You met John Popper while attending Princeton High School in New Jersey.

Originally you were called Blues Band and then you changed your name to Blues Traveler. Was there a reason you changed your name?

Hill: We were a high school band. When you are growing up in a small little suburban town, you could be called Blues Band and you could be the only one.

But then we moved to New York City, and there were a thousand blues bands. And

right around the time that “Ghostbusters” the movie came out, we just loved the idea that when we jammed on our own, it always felt that there was sort of another entity that we were creating, another force.

The four of us made something special and unique. In “Ghostbusters,” there was the character Gozer, also known as “The Traveler,” who could morph and change into anything in that movie.

We kind of liked that idea, and Blues Traveler had a nice ring to it. And it proved to be true. We’ve been doing this for almost 30 years, and traveling is our bread and butter.

We’ve kept together because we’re a band of friends, and traveling down this road together.

Schelkopf: Your song “RunAround” was a huge radio hit when it was released, and the band won a Grammy Award for it. Did you think the song would connect so well with people, and not only that, also earn the band a Grammy Award?

Hill: Of course not. When we were making the album, “Four,” it was when the band really clicked and connected with the producer and we

were connecting with each other.

Brendan Hill: We got asked to do the tour back in January or February, and we were really excited to kind of reconnect with some of

For the fourth consecutive year, the Tri-City Chargers Youth Football Association and Giant Steps, a therapeutic day school in Lisle for elementary, junior-high, and high school students affected

by Autism Spectrum Disorders, partnered to excuse the students for the school day, and instead of holding pencils, they were enjoying bubbles and tackling football dummies.

The event also allowed players from local football programs an opportunity to

learn about autism and how to interact with people who have difficulty communicating or adapting to their environment.

Autism is a neurobiological disorder that affects how the brain interprets sensory

“We wanted to get involved with a charity that helped kids, and allow us to give back to the community,” Druck said. “[We don’t want to] just teach our athletes. We want to give them life experiences. … I want to thank the high schools and volunteers for their support – without them, we couldn’t make this event what it is.”

GENEVA – Cougars reliever Zak Hermans fielded a call from manager Mark Johnson Tuesday morning and braced for close to the worst.

Moments later, Hermans embarked on his biggest whirlwind day in professional baseball yet.

Instead of the demotion to Short-A Boise he initially feared, Hermans ascended to Triple-A to make a spot start for Iowa in the second game of a doubleheader. The right-hander kept the I-Cubs in a game they eventually won, even after arriving Zak about an hour Hermans before he delivered his first pitch.

“There wasn’t really any downtime, which might have been a good thing,” Hermans said. “I couldn’t really psyche myself out or anything.

Just went with it.”

Hermans gladly told teammates about his adventure before the Cougars hosted Peoria on Wednesday night.

The game, which was not finished as of press time, was delayed about 40 minutes by rain at the start, widening the window for storytime.

Hermans’ tale featured characters such as Kyle Hendricks – the Iowa righty who won the opener and offered a crash-course scouting report on the Storm Chasers – as well as Manny Ramirez. Iowa’s high-profile player/coach, a former Major League slugger, greeted

the Cubs, shifted Carhart from Advanced-A Daytona to the Cougars before the season so he could learn the basics at catcher. The 5-foot-9, 200-pound also has played third base.

“Once Lockhart went down, we kind of joked that oh, you know, you might be our emergency second baseman,” Carhart said. “I was like, ‘That’s fine with me.’

“It’s kind of fun. I just roll with it. Try to do the best I can out there.”

Here’s what I’m thinking: By the time Carmelo Anthony ends his “Melo Over ‘Merica” tour, he’ll weigh 300 pounds from all the steak dinners and hot air he’s eaten, and whichever NBA team finally snares him will be getting not a lithe seven-time All-Star gunner but an Oliver Miller clone.

That’s just one of the thoughts that strikes me as this ridiculous season of basketball courtship and buddy-wooing lurches onward.

It’s goofy, isn’t it?

LeBron James and the other star free agents have been acting like junior-high girls, wanting to know who loves them the most, who thinks they’re sooo pretty, who will promise them more fun and lollipops than anyone else – in the whole wide world!

And now thrown into the show-me-the-love mix are coaches, guys such as oneyear New Jersey Nets coach Jason Kidd, who bolted for the Bucks head coaching job, even though the Bucks already had a coach, and former player Kidd had coached for exactly one year in the NBA. See, he didn’t like the

VIEWS Rick Telander fact coaches with even less experience than he – think Steve Kerr and Derrick Fisher (zero games won, lost or thrown out of) – were getting more money than he was.

To soothe your concerns, der reader, the Nets swiftly hired Lionel Hollins to take Kidd’s job, for a hefty, inyour-face $18 million for four years.

This seems infectious, this recruiting and dallying and stroking and posturing for a “better situation” by players and coaches, things usually done by owners and, yes, adolescent girls.

Anthony, the 30-year old former Knicks forward, might ultimately stay in New York, just as James and free-agent sidekicks Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh might stay in Miami with the Heat.

A lot of that depends on how the latter three are wooed by their own team president, Pat Riley.

It used to be players went to new teams with little con-

cern other than the certainty they would be getting more money.

Now they want to know if the new coach is nice or mean, how many leather seats they get, and where their wives (or concubines) might shop and stay fit.

Supposedly Anthony’s spouse, the actress, deejay and reality creature, Lala, is friend’s with Rockets center Dwight Howard’s current girlfriend, singer Christine Vest, who had Howard’s baby last year – and that might help. I think I have this right.

Not certain.

Howard, who really wants Carmelo in Houston, reportedly (by ex-girlfriends) has as many as eight children by eight different women, so everything is, as they say, in play.

By the way, Lala Anthony’s first book, “The Love Playbook: Rules for Sex, Love and Happiness,” can be had on Kindle for $11.99, and it might be an interesting gift item for, say, Howard.

Then, too, Lala’s career is important here as well.

You might have seen her star in the VH1 documentary of her and Carmelo’s 2010 vow

exchange, a reality funfest called “Lala’s Full Court Wedding.” A shorter version called “Lala’s Half Court Trap” also is available. (Just kidding!)

At any rate, Anthony, whose Atlantic-to-Pacific tour ends today in Los Angeles with the Lakers, passed through Chicago, then Houston, where management had created posters of him wearing a Rockets jersey with No. 7 on it.

That numeral was – is – Rockets guard Jeremy Linn’s number. And for those who remember these things, Carmelo was one of the forces that was happy to see Linn shipped off from their old Knicks team, after Linn became a star and Sports Illustrated cover boy in the injured Anthony’s absence.

Sources say that if Anthony comes to the Rockets, Linn swiftly will be launched to another team.

The wounded Linn promptly tweeted some appropriate Bible stuff: “Luke 6:29 – If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from

them.”

Consider it done, dude.

Oh, it’s complex, this emotional world.

Which reminds me, Kidd reportedly tried to have his own Nets center, Brook Lopez, traded to the Bucks last season so he’d be there waiting for Kidd when he took the head coaching job that wasn’t open.

But it’s not about the money. No, no. Remember that.

It’s about, mmm, fulfillment.

Legacies. Championships.

New chicks. (I didn’t really say that.)

“As far as money goes,” Carmelo said, “it don’t really matter to me.” Told you.

I’ll be so happy when all this where-will-they-go? stuff is over.

Then we actually can start to figure put who is on what team and which teams actually are contenders.

San Diego Padres outfielder Will Venable and righthanders Chris Young (Seattle Mariners), Ross Oehlendorf (Washington Nationals) and David Hale (Atlanta Braves).

Hermans also rattled off a few Princeton-bred players in the minors, an Ivy Leaguer aspiring to reach the ivy of Wrigley Field.

“It’s not like you’d expect a ton of draft guys to come out of there,” he said. “That’s probably one of the best, if not

the best [Ivy League] baseball … programs for getting guys drafted.”

That contention brought Hermans to one last story, from his sophomore year.

Princeton visited another team of Tigers for a weekend series at Lousiana State.

A story in a student newspaper featured a quote from one LSU player that the team wasn’t worried about its opponents considering the game was baseball, not quiz bowl.

“Yeah, par for the course.

And then we beat them on Sunday,” said Hermans, who pitched in that game. “So we all joke about it lightheartedly. We know that’s how people view us. But we play some ball, too.”

The British press, never known for its magnanimity, was particularly cruel. “We swear it’s true: Tourette’s sufferer is target for United,” taunted London’s Mirror. “United want American with brain disorder,” The Guardian snickered. “Manchester United trying to sign disabled goalkeeper,” the Independent offered.

During his second season with the team, he made some major blunders, one of which eliminated Manchester from the Champions League tournament in the 90th minute of the game. The press said he was “under scrutiny” and “way off the standard” and wondered whether his Tourette’s had

worsened.

“It was brutal,” he told The New Yorker. “It seemed like they wanted my downfall.”

He eventually rekindled his career elsewhere – and has since come to define the U.S. soccer team in a way few other players have, starting a record eight times in the World Cup as goalie for the team.

On Tuesday, however, it was unclear whether there would be any more World Cups for Howard. He is 35. The World Cup is a tournament pervaded by 20-somethings – and by the time the next one comes around he’ll be nearly 40. But he says he’s not going anywhere. He’s most proud that he didn’t “allow myself to be restricted by Tourette’s syndrome.”

Goalkeepers are a notoriously odd bunch. In their dress, they adopt the colors of a snow cone, all neons and hot greens.

They wear gloves that are better suited for space than sport.

Their hairdos range from Mohawks to dreadlocks to blond Afros. But even by such lofty standards of quirk, the tale of American goalkeeper Tim Howard is richer than most.

Howard, who on Tuesday solidified his position as the greatest goalkeeper in national history, has Tourette’s syndrome.

Although the United States lost its game against Belgium, 2-1, the ending tally would have been much, much worse if not for Howard. He had 16 saves, three more than the previous World Cup record of 13.

“Between now and four years ago, I’ve played a couple hundred games for my club and country,” Howard said after the game. “I don’t really get too high or too low. I think when you have a big tournament, that’s the important thing, managing emotion.”

It has always been that way for Howard. He always has had to think about managing emotion. The bigger the game, the bigger the moment, the more his tics and symptoms flare.

“I’ve never counted [how many tics I have in a game],” he said in a 2013 interview with Spiegel Online. “It happens all the time, without any warning, and it increases the nearer an important game draws.”

When the ball is far away, he says he indulges his twitches.

But when an opposing striker approaches and readies an attack – which happened over and again Tuesday – his muscles miraculously calm.

“I have no idea how I do it,” he said. “Not even my doctors can explain it to me. It’s probably because at that moment my concentration on the game is stronger than the Tourette’s syndrome.”

The standard stereotype of Tourette’s, a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary sounds and movements that may afflict between 1 and 3 percent of people, is an image of a person cursing uncontrollably. But only 10 percent of Tourette’s patients exhibit that symptom, and Howard isn’t one

of them.

“I’ve never had a curse word simply slip out,” he said.

What does slip out: tics and twitches. They’ve been with him his entire life. At 10, Howard’s facial tics started when he was growing up in New Jersey. Unfamiliar situations made him anxious and he developed obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Things could never be straight enough. Ordered enough. Counted enough.

“A certain pattern had to be followed, an exact routine,” mother Esther Howard told The New Yorker.

The tics would come in waves.

“From the age of 9 to 15, it was just this chaos of different tics, and they were pretty

Bears seek reliability in return game

aarkush@chicagofootball.com Technically, the Bears must replace Devin Hester in 2014, as the greatest return specialist in NFL history will be on the opposite sideline when they visit the Falcons in Week 6. No fewer than five men will be vying for the role in Bourbannais later this month.

Fortunately for the Bears, they’re in a position where relying on Hester’s record-breaking production is no longer vital. With an average offensive ranking of 23rd in the league between 2006 and 2013 – including their lone top-10 finish, No. 8 in 2013 – the Bears needed Hester to be every bit as special as he was to put anemic offenses in position to succeed. But with coach Marc Trestman and one of the league’s most dynamic offensive personnel groupings at their disposal, the Bears just need their return game not to be prohibitive to their now-formidable offense.

Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis told the team’s website this week that “a guy who can make all the catches” is among the most important criteria he’ll be looking for in the competition.

“You gotta be focused,” former Panther Armanti Edwards, who signed with the Bears last month after Domenix Hixon tore his ACL, told Chicago Football. “No. 1, you have to catch the ball. No. 2, you have to trust your teammates. … No. 3, get downhill fast.”

Edwards, 26, has averaged 7 yards on 40 career punt returns and 19.7 yards on 15 kickoff returns in a four-year career with the Panthers and

Browns. One of his chief competitors for the job, Chris Williams, agreed with DeCamillis and Edwards that it starts with catching it cleanly.

Rest assured, it sounds a lot easier than it is. The Bears still don’t know who can be trusted in that regard, as the offseason featured a lot of kickoffs and punts scraping the roof of the Walter Payton Center. It resulted in the returners receiving short tosses from coaches indoors, instead of dealing with the weather elements, as well as knuckling footballs descending on them at the same time as would-be tacklers, like they will be in September.

It’s part of the reason the competition is anyone’s to win in training camp, which begins July 25. It starts with ball security, and it’ll be much easier for the coaches to gauge who has it when the action is outdoors and the threat of collisions becomes a real possibility.

“You just have to take reps,” said Edwards. “Once

you get familiar with the kicks and how long it takes for the ball to get down, how long it takes for everyone to hold up, you get familiar with it.”

On his third NFL stop, Edwards has become familiar with how precious opportunities in the NFL are. Although it didn’t work out in Carolina, where the college quarterback from Appalachian State was drafted in the third round in

2010, he remains grateful for the time he had with the Panthers.

“I got a lot out of it,” Edwards said. “I got to learn from Steve Smith and Ricky Proehl at the receiver spot, and I also learned that nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. It’s a fast sport; if you don’t catch on when they want you to, you got to move on. … They move on as well.”

Like Hester and Williams, Edwards’ game revolves around speed. He posted a 4.41 40-yard dash time at his 2010 Pro Day. Although Eric Weems and Micheal Spurlock have more NFL experience as returners, they’re unlikely to offer the same type of home run potential as this pair.

Just don’t expect Edwards, Williams or any of the five Bears included in the competition – second-year running back Michael Ford being the fifth – to engage in a conversation regarding the act of replacing Devin Hester. “[Hester’s] production speaks for itself,” Williams said. “What, 19 [return touchdowns], I think? That’s unbelievable… I couldn’t even imagine.”

There was a time when the Bears couldn’t imagine life without Hester. That time has passed, and they now can sacrifice special for steadiness in the return game – but even that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

For that reason, it will be a fun competition to watch in a few weeks.

‘Snowpiercer’ a must see movie

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Call it an ominous, violent, slow-moving science fiction art film.

Call it a study of class structure and a tale of people trying to claw their way from the bottom to the top. Call it an exciting sci-fi thriller. Sorry, there’s no easy way to pigeonhole this English-language movie from Korean writer-director Joon-ho Bong, except to say that it’s a true original.

That can also be said of the filmmaker’s previous two releases on American shores: the monster movie “The Host,” and the mystery “Mother.”

His singular vision is on display again in “Snowpiercer,” which tells of the scientific community’s solution to a certain environmental crisis. Disperse the cooling substance CW7 into the atmosphere, and global warming will be fixed. Well, no, there was a problem. The whole world froze, and all life became extinct. Except for a group of lucky survivors, chosen by lottery, then divvied up into different class groups and shunted aboard a specially designed train, one that circles the frozen planet once a year, its passengers subsisting within its self-contained environment.

The rich are up front, living in oldstyle train travel comfort; the poor are in back, getting by in baggage; all sorts of segments of society are in the long stretch of cars in the middle (one is filled with ax-wielding ninjas, another has disco partiers). An armed military tries to keep order. Way up at the very front, according to legend, is the train’s designer, Wilford, who whispered voices call “the divine keeper of the sacred engine.”

This is all taking place 18 years after the world, as the passengers knew it, ended. The poor people in the back, wearing drab clothing and having dirty faces, and only getting to eat a mysterious substance called protein block (don’t worry, it’s not Soylent Green, but it’s not much less disgusting), under the de facto leadership of Curtis (an initially unrecognizable Chris Evans), are moving forward, a car at a time, hoping to find a better life. Revolts, we’re told, have been attempted before but have been quashed by the military.

Now, though, there’s a rumor that the soldiers’ guns are empty, having long ago run out of bullets.

The first quarter of the film is uncomfortably claustrophobic, not just because the quarters are so tight,

“Snowpiercer,” is a film about the scientific community’s solution to a certain environmental crisis. and the lighting so low – the first peek outside a window, upon the frozen wastelands of dead cities and huge, icy mountains, is about a quarter of the way in – but because cameras are kept so close to people’s faces, it’s sometimes hard to figure out who they are, what they’re doing, and what’s going on around them.

But it’s easy to understand that the people in back just want to be up front.

They want more of the water that’s available to the well-off people (processed from the plentiful ice outside), they want the comfort of real chairs instead of wooden benches and floor space, they want to be able to eat sushi instead of protein blocks (yes, there’s an aquarium and a sushi bar way up there).

That would all be nice, but what Curtis wants, or at least what others convince him he wants, is to confront the bossman Wilford (Ed Harris) and to take over the engine, which, in this self-contained environment, would mean ruling the world.

The problems, though, are plentiful.

The people in charge have a mantra about keeping things in order and are ready to mete out some really dastard-

ly punishment to those not following rules. There’s also the dilemma of people addicted to the hallucinatory drug Kronole, which is made from industrial waste. The revolutionaries must also deal with Wilford’s vicious right-hand woman Mason (an entirely unrecognizable Tilda Swinton, joyously overacting and adorned with Coke-bottle glasses and buck teeth).

But as the film moves forward, so do the poor, making their way through train cars with accoutrements that get more and more civilized. It’s a simple story, simply told, as if the tale itself was just a train moving along a track.

Toward the end, the script and its characters start to let loose with back stories and secrets that make everything more complicated but never take away from the mood.

The film’s haunting last shot will undoubtedly split viewers and get them into discussions as to whether the ending is upbeat or downbeat.

by Joon-ho Bong. The film stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Ed Harris and Kang-ho Song. It is rated R.

People with diabetes can lower risk of heart disease Dear Doctor K: When I was diagnosed with diabetes, my doctor said I am now also at increased risk for heart disease. What’s the connection?

Dear Reader: The link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease is stronger than many people realize: About two-thirds of people with diabetes die of heart disease or stroke. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Benjamin Scirica, a cardiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, about the link between the two conditions.

He explained that diabetes harms the heart in several ways.

As you know, diabetes leads to high levels of blood sugar (glucose). It also triggers an immune response that causes chronic inflammation. Both injure artery walls. This makes arteries more likely to develop atherosclerosis, the buildup of fatty plaques in blood vessel walls that hinders blood flow and increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Elevated blood sugar also stiffens artery walls so they don’t expand as well, thereby increasing the risk of blood clots. Diabetes can also cause scar tissue to form in the heart muscle.

The good news is that – as is true in people without diabetes – controlling cardiac risk factors

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff decreases the risk of heart attack and stroke. What does that mean for you?

First, if you smoke, quit.

Next, exercise regularly – ideally in sessions of 45 minutes to an hour, five times a week. Exercise strengthens your cardiovascular system. It also is key to achieving or maintaining a healthy weight, which reduces your risk of heart disease and makes your diabetes easier to control. Regular exercise prompts your cells to remove sugar from the blood, lowering blood sugar levels.

Find a heart-healthy eating plan and stick with it. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains. Limit or avoid trans fats and saturated fats, refined grains and sugary drinks.

If you have high cholesterol in addition to diabetes, the two together greatly increase your risk of heart disease. Therefore, it is important to lower your cholesterol as well as your blood sugar.

The most potent cholesterol-lowering medicines are statin drugs.

These drugs not only lower your

blood levels of total cholesterol and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, they also decrease inflammation inside plaques of atherosclerosis. This lowers your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Finally, if you have high blood pressure in addition to diabetes, these two together greatly increase your risk of heart disease.

Therefore, it is even more important to control your blood pressure, which may require blood pressure-lowering medication.

While medicines may be necessary to lower your blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure, lifestyle changes are at least as powerful as medicines in achieving these benefits. And even if medicines are necessary, lifestyle changes can help reduce the doses of medicines that you need.

So, work with your doctor to find a combination of diet, exercise and medication to keep your blood sugar levels close to normal while avoiding extremely low blood sugar. This will help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or death from heart disease.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 40-year-old parent of two wonderful teens who are not smokers and will probably never smoke.

Instead, my problem is my parents, who are both in their 70s and both totally addicted to tobacco. I love them very much and I keep asking them to quit smoking, but they keep telling me that they are too old to give up their smoking habit.

A neighbor of mine told me that she remembered that you had once printed a letter in the Goshen News in Indiana from an elderly woman in her 80s who said that one day she just simply quit smoking cold turkey and never smoked again.

Would you please print that column again? – Mother, Goshen, Ind. Dear Mother: The column appeared in newspapers in January 2007, and I’m reprinting it just for you: Dr. Wallace: Please allow an old lady to share my story with today’s teens. My message is sincere and comes from my heart.

When I was 12 years old, my best friend and I would “borrow” my grandpa’s tobacco pipe, fill it with tobacco out of a can, and go behind our barn and share puffs. When I was 13, I was “sneaking” a few cigarettes from my dad’s cigarette pouch, and I’d share a cigarette with my friend out behind the barn. When I turned 14, my friend and I were addicted to tobacco and we both did anything we could (beg, borrow, steal) to satisfy our tobacco habit.

I quit school when I was 16 and worked in a store. When I got paid, the first thing I did was buy a couple of packs of cigarettes. By age 18, I smoked over two packs of

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace cigarettes daily. I smoked heavily for 66 years.

During the time when I was a nicotine slave I suffered all the negatives that tobacco will cause – shortness of breath, foul tobacco breath, coughing spells, burns in clothes and furniture and a shortness of hard-earned cash.

My husband, who never smoked, died 10 years ago. I’m sure my secondhand smoke contributed to his death.

Unfortunately, my young friend, who joined me in a puff or two, also became a two-pack-a-day smoker. Twenty years ago, she passed away from lung cancer.

I’ve been reading your column for quite some time and I’m well aware that you encourage teens to never start smoking and to end this nasty habit if they do smoke.

Six months ago I decided to have the guts to quit smoking. I threw away two unopened packs and haven’t smoked a cigarette since.

I’m thrilled that I had the courage and willpower to end my nicotine habit.

I admit it was difficult for the first two or three weeks. Dr. Wallace, if I stopped smoking, any addicted smoker could quit smoking! I might have been the most addicted nicotine victim on this planet.

Teens, please take an 81-year-old lady’s advice.

At the bridge table, your strategy may depend upon the form of the game. When you are playing Chicago or in an event scored using international matchpoints, you should concentrate on making or breaking the contract; overtricks are trivial. But when you are competing in a pair tournament, overtricks can be valuable.

You get one matchpoint for every other pair holding your cards that you outscore, whether by 10 or 500 points.

How does that affect strategy?

Look at this deal. South is in four spades after the given auction, in which East made a three-club weak jump overcall and West allowed the unfavorable vulnerability to silence him. First, what should West lead?

At the table, Jerry Masters of Bonita Springs, Florida, led the club king, giving the defenders the option of who would lead to the second trick. Then he shifted to a low heart.

When overtricks are unimportant, South should win with dummy’s ace, draw trumps and drive out the diamond ace to guarantee 10 tricks. At pairs, though, it is tempting to play low from the dummy at trick two. Maybe the finesse will work. And if it does not, the play costs only when East has a singleton diamond, shifts to it at trick three and receives a diamond ruff – exactly as happened at the table.

Yes, South erred, because if Jane Cookson of Bonita Springs (East) had not held the heart king, she would have overtaken the club king with her ace and led a heart (or her singleton) herself.

(collectively, "the Act"), and WHEREAS, the BOARD OF TRUSTEES of the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT ("the Corporate Authorities") have determined that it is advisable, necessary and in the best interests of public health, safety and welfare to improve the System, including the following: The Mill Creek Water Reclamation District uses 98 static tube aerators to treat the wastewater in two aerated lagoons.

The air is supplied to the static tubes by three 60 horse power blowers that run at all times. The single largest energy consumer for the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District is the aeration system. Static tube technology seeks to pump out a mass amount of air into the lagoon in order to provide the maximum amount of mixing. However, while mixing occurs successfully, the nature of the large bubbles emitted renders it inefficient at transferring oxygen to the water. The purpose of the project is to replace the inefficient and aging static tube system with the MARS aeration system. The MARS aeration system combines the mixing power of the static tube with the energy efficiency of a fine bubble diffuser allowing for optimum mixing and oxygen transfer. The MARS is also designed to be employed in a wet environment without the need to dewater the treatment cells. The MARS aeration units are supplied air from positive displacement blowers with variable frequency drives (VFD's) to further allow for efficient treatment targeting. The VFD's can be controlled both manually and automatically through the use of oxygen sensors placed in the treatment lagoons. These oxygen sensors report the dissolved oxygen levels in the lagoon at all times so that the treatment process is never over or under aerated, together with any land or rights in land and all electrical, mechanical or other services necessary, useful or advisable to the construction and installation ("the Project"), all in accordance with the plans and specifications prepared by consulting engineers of the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT; which Project has a useful life of 20 years; and WHEREAS, the estimated cost of construction and installation of the Project, including engineering, legal, financial and other related expenses is $518,000.00, and there are insufficient funds on hand and lawfully available to pay these costs; and WHEREAS, the loan shall bear an interest rate as defined by 35 Ill. Adm. Code 365, which does not exceed the maximum rate authorized by the Bond Authorization Act, as amended (30 ILCS 305/0.01 et seq.), at the time of the issuance of the loan; and WHEREAS, the principal and interest payment shall be payable semi-annually, and the loan shall mature in 20 years, which is within the period of useful life of the Project; and WHEREAS, the costs are expected to be paid for with a loan to the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT from the Water Pollution Control Loan Program through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the loan to be repaid from revenues of the System and the loan is authorized to be accepted at this time pursuant to the Act; and WHEREAS, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT is authorized to borrow funds from the Water Pollution Control Loan Program in the aggregate principal amount of $518,000.00 to provide funds to pay the costs of the Project; WHEREAS, the loan to the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT shall be made pursuant to a Loan Agreement, including certain terms and conditions, between the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency; NOW THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Corporate Authorities of the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT of Kane County, Illinois, as follows: SECTION 1. SECTION 2. DETERMINATION TO BORROW FUNDS It is necessary and in the best interests of the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT to construct the Project for the public health, safety and welfare, in accordance with the plans and specifications, as described; that the System continues to be operated in accordance with the provision of the Act; and that for the purpose of constructing the Project, it is hereby authorized that funds be borrowed by the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT in an aggregate principal amount (which can include construction period interest financed over the term of the loan) not to exceed $518,000.00.

SECTION 3. PUBLICATION This Ordinance, together with a Notice in the statutory form (attached hereto as Exhibit A), shall be published once within ten days after passage in the Kane County Chronicle, a newspaper published and of general circulation in the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT, and if no petition, signed by electors numbering 10% or more of the registered voters in the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT (i.e. 352) asking that the question of improving the System as provided in this Ordinance and entering into the Loan Agreement therefore be submitted to the electors of the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT, is filed with the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT Clerk within 30 days after the date of publication of this Ordinance and notice, then this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect. A petition form shall be provided by the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT to any individual requesting one.

SECTION 4. ADDITIONAL ORDINANCES If no petition meeting the requirements of the Act and other applicable laws is filed during the 30-day petition period, then the Corporate Authorities may adopt additional ordinances or proceedings supplementing or amending this Ordinance providing for entering into the Loan Agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, prescribing all the details of the Loan Agreement, and providing for the collection, segregation and distribution of the revenues of the System, so long as the maximum amount of the Loan Agreement as set forth in this Ordinance is not exceeded and there is no material change in the Project or purposes described herein. Any additional ordinances or proceedings shall in all instances become effective in accordance with the Act or other applicable law. This Ordinance, together with such additional ordinances or proceedings, shall constitute complete authority for entering into the Loan Agreement under applicable law.

However, notwithstanding the above, the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT may not adopt additional ordinances or amendments which provide for any substantive or material change in the scope and intent of this Ordinance, including but not limited to interest rate, preference, or priority of any other ordinance with this Ordinance, parity of any other ordinance with this Ordinance, or otherwise alter or impair the obligation of the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT to pay the principal and interest due to the Water Pollution Control Loan Program without the written consent of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

SECTION 5. LOAN NOT INDEBTEDNESS OF MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT Repayment of the loan to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency by the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT pursuant to this Ordinance is to be solely from the revenue derived from revenues of the System, and the loan does not constitute an indebtedness of the MILL CREEK WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT within the meaning of any constitutional or statutory limitation.

SECTION 6. APPLICATION FOR LOAN The President of the Board of Trustees is hereby authorized to make application to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for a loan through the Water Pollution Control Loan Program, in accordance with the loan requirements set out in 35 Ill. Adm. Code 365.

SECTION 7. ACCEPTANCE OF LOAN AGREEMENT The Corporate Authorities hereby authorize acceptance of the offer of a loan through the Water Pollution Control Loan Program, including all terms and conditions of the Loan Agreement as well as all special conditions contained therein and made a part thereof by reference. The Corporate Authorities further agree that the loan funds awarded shall be used solely for the purposes of the project as approved by the Illinois

Environmental Protection Agency in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Loan Agreement.
