asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Planning the anti-substance abuse event named after her late son isn’t necessarily easy for Vicki Foley.

The annual Chris Walk Night Out Against Substance Abuse takes six months to plan, she said, so it makes missing him that much more difficult.

“But it’s necessary,” she said, noting people need to be shown where they can get help.

Foley, an employee of Shaw Media, said Saturday marked the eighth year of the event, which is held in the month her son died from a heroin overdose.

Held at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve in Geneva, the event featured a 5K run/ walk, silent auction, Zumba, face painting, children’s games and demonstrations

Organizations such as Serenity House, A Man in Recovery and Renz Center also had a presence at Chris Walk. Together, Foley said, they are “fighting this cause.”

will support organizations or programs that have similar missions, Foley said, noting the board chooses the beneficiaries after the event.

About 30 volunteers helped with this year’s event, which also included appearances by Kane County

Sheriff Donald Kramer, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell and U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano.

Hultgren spoke about the importance of Chris Walk.

“If we could save one life,” he said, “that’s what it’s all about.”

Teen charged after Sunday crash in North Aurora

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – A teen has been charged with stealing a pickup truck and causing a crash in North Aurora on Sunday that left a man with serious injuries.

The crash happened at 3:20 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of River Road and Route 56, according to a news release from the North Aurora Fire Department. A 17-yearold teen who lives in the

38W300 block of Route 64 near St. Charles was driving a gold 2005 Dodge 1500 pickup truck south on River Road when he ran a red light and struck a green Dodge Caravan, which was headed east on Butterfield Road, according to the release.

The teen and a female passenger in the pickup fled the area on foot and were later caught by police about a half mile from the scene, the release stated. The pickup previously was reported stolen

to the Aurora Police Department, officials said.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan, a 44-year-old Glendale Heights man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Presence Mercy Hospital in Aurora by North Aurora Fire Department paramedics, according to the release. He was later transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he remained in serious condition Monday afternoon, the release stated.

The driver of the pickup

truck was taken into custody at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center and has been charged with unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a converted motor vehicle, disobeying a traffic control signal, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and not having a valid drivers license, according to the release.

The female passenger in the pickup was later released without charges, police said.

LOCAL BRIEF Lane closures set for this week on Route 31

ELGIN – Temporary, overnight lane closures on Route 31 in Elgin are scheduled to begin this week to install bridge beams as part of the Route 31 interchange project on Interstate 90. Electronic message signs will be put in place in advance to alert drivers in advance of the overnight closures.

Closures are scheduled the week of July 27 to install bridge beams for the bridge carrying westbound I-90 over the roadway. The removal and reconstruction of the bridge carrying eastbound I-90 over Route 31 will be scheduled in 2016. Weather permitting, overnight lane closures will be

scheduled over two nights, with one lane closing in each direction from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Route 31 between Tollgate Road and Davis Road and intermittent, full closures lasting no longer than 15 minutes each, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. All lanes on Route 31 will reopen daily by 6 a.m. In addition, one westbound lane from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on I-90 over Route 31 will close to accommodate the beam installation scheduled.

Solar project advances

Bruhl on Monday gave the St. Charles City Services Committee a brief update on a solar photovoltaic demonstration project, which will be on part of the Legacy Business Center of St. Charles, 850 Equity Drive, St. Charles.

The Illinois Municipal Electric Agency Board of Directors unanimously approved building the project in St. Charles, Bruhl said. Agency officials earlier this year asked its members, which includes the city of St. Charles, to submit proposals for solar power projects with a rated output of up to 500 KW. The plant might potentially become a community

solar project from which the city could market the power from the plant directly to residents, Bruhl wrote in an earlier update.

The project went out to bid and negotiations on contract terms still are ongoing with the selected vendor, Bruhl said.

Construction will begin sometime within the next 12 months, Bruhl said.

‘A MISSING PERSONS CASE’

Emily Czajkowski, 14, last seen in St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Police departments and scores of residents Monday continued efforts to find a Campton Hills teen reported missing since Wednesday.

Monday marked the fifth day since anyone has seen or heard from Emily Czajkowski, 14. She last was spotted between 7 and 8 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Main and 14th streets in St. Charles after walking away from the Pottawatomie Community Center, where she was dropped off at 6:35 p.m. for a dance class, according to police.

“We’re treating this as a missing persons case, and that’s what we’ve done from

the onset,” St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said Monday.

Police encourage Czajkowski to contact the police or her parents to let them know she’s OK. There is no evidence of foul play in Czajkowski’s absence, Keegan said. Multiple officers and detectives continue to pursue every lead left with the police department, he said.

“Anything we get forwarded from residents, we’re looking at it and looking at it seriously,” Keegan said.

McCarty and Sally Smith of St. Charles on Sunday morning decided to put up ribbons and spread the word through social media. By Sunday afternoon, they met with a group

of about 30 people in Campton Hills in regards to the effort.

The Steiner family was one of several to help tie ribbons in the area. Hunter Steiner, 15, had a few classes with Czajkowski when she was a student at Thompson Middle School in St. Charles.

Steiner said it was strange for him to hear that Czajkowski has not been found.

“This is the first kid that went missing that I know,” Steiner said.

Steiner, his sister Jordan, 17, and their parents put up ribbons around Thompson Middle School and St. Charles East High School.

Porter does not know Czajkowski, but heard about her disappearance and wanted to do something to help. She is one of the nearly 14,000 people following the “Help find Emily Czajkowski” Facebook page.

Another Geneva resident, Maggie Ammon, 14, came to downtown St. Charles for the Monday meeting to pick up fliers and hand them out in downtown Batavia. Maggie said she and Czajkowski have a mutual friend.

“I’ve heard she’s really nice, and it’s really scary that this is happening here,” Maggie said.

St. Charles School District 303 on Monday afternoon sent out a police-authorized message to parents and students asking for help in finding Czajkowski, St. Charles Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

He stood with St. Charles police officers during the Monday meeting.

“Our role is to support this however we can,” Schlomann said in a brief interview after the meeting. “Our counselors have been involved, our teachers have been involved.”

Czajkowski is an incoming freshman at St. Charles North High School, and Czajkowski’s father is a computer specialist for the district, Schlomann said.

Czajkowski’s parents are in contact with police and they continue to be cooperative, Keegan said.

As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, a fundraiser on GoFundMe.com to help the Czajkowski’s family while they are unable to attend work had received $840 in donation pledges.

Czajkowski appeared to be happy and doing well socially during her free time at Thompson Middle School, said Michelle Shambora, who helps out in the school’s cafeteria.

She assisted volunteers at the Monday meeting in finding different locations to spread the word about Czajkowski.

“The more people we can get her face in front of, the better,” Shambora said. “Who knows how far she can get right now.”

Geneva amends its weapons ordinance

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In a unanimous vote Monday, Geneva aldermen supported an amendment to the city ordinances governing weapons that makes it illegal to discharge firearms or air guns in the city limits, and acknowledges motorists can legally carry a concealed weapon if licensed.

Calling it housekeeping, aldermen acted as the Committee of the Whole to recommend approval of the amendments to the city code.

Police Chief Steve Mexin said one amendment is simply getting the city ordinance in line with the state’s concealed-carry law.

The other makes it clear discharging a firearm in the city limits is illegal, he said.

“The illegal discharge of a firearm was never included in the previous ordinance. Now it is expressly stated,” Mexin said. “You may not discharge an air gun or BB gun in the city limits.”

“So shooting at a target in the backyard with a BB gun is now illegal?” 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra said.

“I don’t understand this.”

“Right now it’s illegal for someone to discharge a BB gun or pellet gun within someone’s property if the pellet leaves the property,” Mexin said.

“And it’s very easy for a pellet to leave a property: If something ricochets, or if they’re just a bad shot – or they’re shooting at a bird, which they shouldn’t be doing – it can go astray and hit someone’s property, home or

person,” Mexin said. “That is the idea behind that. Most towns have an ordinance similar to this.”

Mexin said the punishment could be anything from a warning to a $750 fine, the same for any violation of the

city’s ordinances.

The amendments will go into effect after the City Council takes final action.

West Nile virus detected KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A sample of mosquitoes collected in St. Charles has tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to Clarke, the city’s mosquito abatement vendor.

In response, Clarke will conduct a citywide spray at dusk Tuesday.

According to the Kane

County Health Department, West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding off an infected bird.

Only about two persons out of 10 who are bitten by an infected mosquito will experience any illness, according to the health department. Symptoms of West Nile virus usually are mild and include fever, headache and body aches.

Dennis was born June 16, 1949, in Beloit, WI and graduated from Turner High School in Beloit in 1967. After marrying Debbie on December 14, 1968, in Janesville, WI, he served in the US Army from 1969-71 as a Medical Corpsman with the 12th Evacuation Hospital in Cu Chi, Vietnam.

After returning from service, he & Debbie raised their children in St. Charles, near where he worked at General Mills for 28 years and where he and Debbie were members of the First Baptist Church of Geneva. Over the years, in addition to being actively involved in their kids’ busy school & sports activities, he also earned an associate degree in Business Administration, as well as real estate & mortgage brokerage licenses. Dennis and Debbie retired and were currently living in Naples, FL.

He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Kathy Teadt; mother-in-law, Eileen Hardy; siblings, Trudy Thorson & Michael and Brian Teadt; and many other special family members & friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Diana Teadt; brother, Tony Teadt; father, Buddy Teadt; and his father-in-law, Knowlton Hardy.

Dennis had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh and sense of adventure, from games he created for his kids’ birthday parties and numerous family nicknames, to the “winter picnics”, bike riding, & countless family trips they took throughout the US. He was an extremely creative and intelligent man who inspired his family with his stories, ideas, and thoughts about life.

Dennis loved being out in nature so he and Debbie traveled extensively. He had a great appreciation for all types of music and cars (and had an encyclopedic knowledge of both!). He was a great car buff & always enjoyed owning nice cars.

He was a very social person, an avid reader, especially history, and discussing current issues was a favorite pastime.

God decided to bring Dennis home and then four days later, blessed the family with baby

vice. That is why we are so thrilled to be part of this impactful program that helps military heroes who have sustained the most devastating injuries.”

Jezycki also responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the memories from that day still haunt him.

“I got there just as the second tower came down,” he said during a presentation at the North Aurora store. “It’s a difficult thing to even think about.”

North Aurora Fire Chief Ryan Lambert and other firefighters also attended the presentation at the North Aurora store, along with North Aurora Village President Dale Berman.

“I don’t think that there is anyone more deserving than those you are serving,” Berman told Jezycki.

Jezycki also gave a presentation at the Geneva store.

Born: Oct. 24, 1966; in St. Charles, IL Died: July 25, 2015; in Fishers, IN Paul R. Henkel, age 48, of Fishers, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at his home.

He was born on Oct. 24, 1966, to John and Dorothy (Neumann) Henkel in Saint Charles, Illinois.

Paul was a proud graduate of Indiana University, and worked as a Technology Solutions Consultant for Van Ausdall & Farrar.

He was a member of St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church, an Evans Scholar, and a former member of Knights of Columbus. Paul was an avid golfer, and enjoyed being a handyman. Most of all, he loved his wife and daughters.

Paul is survived by his wife, Julie A. Henkel; daughters, Elizabeth A. Henkel, and Emily M. Henkel; brothers, Tom (Lisa) Henkel, Jim (Laura) Henkel, and John (Nancy) Henkel; sister, Stephanie Henkel; father- and mother-in-law, William and Lois Evans; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother,

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2015, at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church, 11441 Hague Road, in Fishers, with Rev. Martin Peter officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, July 30, 2015 from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m., at the church.

Burial will be at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery in Indianapolis.

In a perfect world, each of us would discover our calling early on in life. But because that isn’t the case for most of us, there are – thankfully – so many resources we are able to utilize that will help guide us to the path best suited for us.

People of all ages are able to experiment with different career paths through internships, interest tests, mentors, talking to people in several fields, even researching and discovering in your own way.

Whether you are a young adult beginning the process of choosing a career or someone who is redirecting your path, choosing a career can be overwhelming.

When I began contemplating a career – or even a major, for that matter – I was overwhelmed to say the least.

I know my interests, but how do they translate to careers?

Will my major only allow me to land a job in that specific field? What company has what I am looking for?

Fortunately, I had the opportunity to answer many of those questions through my internship at the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. Putting out the fire, next time THE WASHINGTON POST The Ebola virus has not been eliminated from West Africa, but the public health crisis has eased.

The virus, for which there is no ready cure, infected more than 27,000 people and caused more than 11,000 deaths since the outbreak began in early 2014. The pain and suffering have been immense. Now it is time to confront another hard problem: addressing the weaknesses in global response that allowed the virus to spread so rapidly. Without the urgency of another outbreak, national governments and the World Health Organization will be disinclined to change the way they do business. But change they must, or there will be another wave of disease, panic and unnecessary death.

The WHO’s lethargic response to Ebola in West Africa has brought calls for creation of a new organization that would have responsibility for emergency response. The belief in the need for rapid response to infectious disease has been gathering steam with a succession of outbreaks that spanned national borders: severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS; bird flu; swine flu; Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS; and Ebola virus disease. Although different in transmission, virulence and danger to people, all of these tested the ability of humankind to respond.

Now, a panel appointed

by WHO Director General Margaret Chan has examined all aspects of the organization’s response to the Ebola outbreak and concluded that a new organization is not the right answer. The panel declared in a report that such an agency

would take too much time to set up and be unnecessarily duplicative. Instead, the panel said, the WHO “must re-establish its pre-eminence as the guardian of global public health.”

This is a tall order, and the panel’s report explains why.

A sea change in thinking and organization will be needed.

The WHO “does not currently possess the capacity or organizational culture to deliver a full emergency public health response,” the panel stated.

“There are no core funds for emergency response.” The WHO’s overall weakness in this field was underscored by the stark fact it was not the WHO but rather Doctors Without Borders, a charity, that took the early lead in warning about Ebola and in battling the virus in West Africa.

The panel offered a host of valuable ideas for improvement, including creation of a WHO center for emergency response and a contingency fund to support it.

The WHO said it is already working on the fund. The panel also pointed out that the WHO was slow in declaring a “public health emergency of international concern” because messages from the field about Ebola either “did not reach senior leaders or senior leaders did not recognize their significance.” A more sensitive early warning system is needed.

The WHO is made up of member states, but they, too, performed poorly. Many have failed to implement stronger standards for public health adopted a decade ago with the goal of spotting and reporting local outbreaks that could become a global emergency.

This neglect is irresponsible and could be repaid in deadly epidemics to come.

To the Editor: The NRA and other gun rights groups seem to be insisting individuals be issued guns in conjunction with the shootings at Sandy Hook; Virginia Tech; Fort Hood, Texas; the Colorado theater; South Carolina and now Tennessee.

The attacks that killed and wounded people at these locations were on a random basis, with the areas predetermined only by the shooter. They were assaulted with various weapons, including semi-automatic firearms.

case, unlock the trigger guard, load the weapon, track down the shooter and pull the trigger at a live human who also has a loaded weapon? Have any of these gun rights advocates ever aimed a weapon and fired at a homo sapien?

The police are trained in small arms, but – according to some police reports – more bullets are fired then hit the target. Only in movies and TV do the police and military shoot and hit the target in one or two attempts. Citizens have the right to be armed, especially with concealed

weapons, because fire arms are allowed to protect personal property not your neighbors.

Unfortunately, with the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms, the lack of family members discussing health issues about other family members, and the shortage of trained mental professionals and facilities, American society will have to continue to accept these violent acts as purely random, completed by individuals.

Spring, Pessetti need extra hole to determine winner

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – It took 30 years for Randy Spring to return to Sunday’s St. Charles Men’s Golf Tournament Championship flight title match.

So it only seemed natural that the round, played at Pottawatomie Golf Course, would need more than the regulation number of holes to determine if Spring or Dan Pessetti would be the winner.

Spring, taking the advice of his caddy and son, Chris, focused on his drives to win the 19th hole and the championship title of the match play tournament, 1 up.

The golfers played the 368-yard, par-4 sixth hole for the playoff round. Spring put the ball on the green in two shots.

“As you get tired, your legs get tired. Chris just reminded me to maintain good posture in the drive so I stood up a little straighter and hit a good drive,” Spring said.

“We did the same thing on the wedge shot.”

Pessetti needed three strokes. His second drive landed in a sand trap just left of the green.

“At the tee, I was just about to hit my drive when I look down and in the middle of my backswing, I thought, ‘Man that ball looks like it is teed up too high’ and then I popped it high left,” Pessetti said. “At that point, I knew I could recover. When I pulled the shot into the trap I got a little deflated. At that point ... unless it goes in the hole, it’s over.”

Spring sank his first putt to win.

“I left a lot of puts short today, and we just tried to make sure we got that one to the hole,” Spring said.

“I don’t think either of us were playing our best today.

It was the battle of the bad driver versus the bad putter,” said Pessetti, who had several drives land just off the fairway.

Spring resumed playing in the tournament last year after a 28-year absence.

“I played in it from about 1970 to 1986. The last time I won, it was 1985 and I was runner-up in 1986,” Spring said. “Because of family stuff, I didn’t play again until last year. I got beat in the semifinal.”

Gus Eash won the A-flight title with a 3 and 2 win over Ken Harris.

B-flight top honors went to Carl Masters, who beat Wayne Heuertz, 3 and 2.

Jon Quirin earned the C-flight title, beating Ed Blyshak, 4 and 3.

“It went very well. Many of the matches went to the very end and the championship level went to a playoff,’ said Pottawatomie pro Ron Skubisz of the three-weekend tournament. “How much better than that can it get?”

Chambers follows father’s footsteps to Ivy League school

After attending camps at Illinois, Western Illinois, Northern Illinois and Harvard, the Princeton camp Sunday was the last one Sean Chambers would go to, committing just a few weeks before his senior high school season.

Although he was recruited as a defensive back, Chambers plans to be the starting quarterback for the Vikings this season.

But he will have his work cut out for him to replace last year’s starting quarterback Daniel Santacaterina’s 2,443 yards and 23 touchdowns last season, which led the Vikings to their first appearance in the Class 7A quarterfinals in

After losing four members of the 2014 Kane County Chronicle All-Area First Team in Santacaterina, Pace Temple, Matt Loberg and Brock Perry to graduation, the Vikings have had Chambers and other experienced varsity players to step up and lead the team this offseason.

“The returning players have really set the tone and are proving themselves as mentors to the younger guys,” Sean Chambers said.

“They see us work hard, and it makes them want to push themselves that much more.

We have been working our tails off this summer and have had improvement from guys on both sides of the ball.”

The 6-foot-3 Chambers also said he plans to return to the basketball court for Geneva this season after being part of a team that made a trip to the Class 4A state tournament last season.

GENEVA – Princeton had always been high on Sean Chambers’ list. Ever since his father played football at the Ivy League school, there had always been a draw for him to go there.

He made that happen.

After attending a camp Sunday, Chambers committed to Princeton on Monday, turning down his other offer from Valparaiso University.

“My dad has always been a role model for me,” Chambers said. “He has always pushed me to go there and it’s really been a dream for me also. The coaches loved my athleticism and what I did at the camp, so I’m really thankful and blessed to have this opportunity.”

Chambers’ father, Josh, was an offensive lineman at

Princeton and graduated in the Class of 1988.

Josh Chambers said he could not be Sean Chambers more proud of what his son has accomplished not just playing football, but also academically.

“We are incredibly proud of how much hard work Sean has put in both on the field and in the classroom,” Josh Chambers said. “We always wanted it to be Sean’s choice, so I think when this opportunity presented itself, it became a no-brainer for him. He always wanted to go to a great school, and you can’t do much better than the No. 1 school in the country.”

“I’ve always kind of had defense in my blood,” Sean Chambers said. “I had the opportunity to be the backup QB last year behind a great teacher and mentor in [Daniel Santacaterina]. I should still play some safety position this year, so I’m excited for the opportunity to play both ways.”

Sean, who said he’s thinking about studying engineering at the Ivy League university, said committing to Princeton for football allowed him to go into one of the best academic schools in the country.

But now that his recruitment process has come to an end, Chambers said he is excited to get his final high school season underway and help Geneva football be suc-

Hawks prepare for more success

By STEPHEN GORDON editorial@kcchronicle.com The success of the Fox Valley Hawks Hockey Club came as surprise to many this past fall and spring season. But under the direction of coach Phil Gabrielsen, there is a realistic expectation the 2015-16 season could be just as good if not better.

As the Hawks finished 20142015 with a record of 20-5, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Blackhawk Cup state tournament in the combined civision, they would then follow that up with a record of 6-3 in the West Meadows High School Hockey Spring League.

“I think we were all surprised at the success,” Gabrielsen said. “We were more surprised we had 50 kids show

up at spring league (tryouts).

I do not think there was a single coach or board member who sat back and said, ‘I think we’d better prepare for 50 kids wanting to play for us in the spring.’ I am sure the success we had last season probably had a lot to do with the number we had in spring.”

Gabrielsen said all he was hoping for this past season and in the offseason was that players would not just sit home and do nothing. He wanted his players to get out and go on vacation and get away from the game by either playing other sports or taking a trip somewhere.

But players such as Zach Rittenburg, Morgan York, Jake Brevik, Dom Ivonelli, Jake Raymer, Chase White, Tyler Nance, Gio Pompellio,

Devon Chrobek and Tyler Campise all had other ideas.

“All these players are playing in a four-on-four summer league at All-Seasons Ice Arena in Aurora,” Gabrielsen said. “I did not say they had to do this. They joined this league on their own, paid their own way. I thought it was great the kids got together as a group and are doing an activity together more so than just playing hockey. It shows the tightness of the group.”

The core’s camaraderie also will carry over to the coaching staff, as Gabrielsen will have his entire staff back in late August when tryouts begin. Currently the club has no summer fundraising activities planner, Gabrielsen said.

“I think the board is just trying to ready themselves for

the upcoming season,” he said.

“I think there are a lot of us, coaches and board members, who are still working through how good of a club we are.

I am not sure we will hit the same number of kids come late August we had come out for spring league. I hope we do.

We are preparing for it.”

Gabrielsen said his goals and expectations for the 20152016 regular season will not be formulated until he sees for himself how many will try out for the Hawks come Aug. 20, when conditioning starts to be followed by actual evaluations beginning Aug. 25. All activities are planned to be held at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva.

“We will see some new players this season, of course, but for the most part, our players

know what will be expected of them this upcoming season,” Gabrielsen said. “And our expectations will be higher this upcoming season because of last season.”

The Hawks are currently in negotiations with the Fox Valley Ice Arena in lining up practice time slots and game time slots.

“We’ve confirmed our summer conditioning and tryout times with Fox Valley Ice Arena and are working with them on our fall practice and game slots,” Hawks assistant coach Mark Sokniewicz said.

“The success of our program is dependent upon the fall ice schedule and we look forward to support from (the rink) and the Kane County Forest Preserve to help us promote high school hockey at the rink.”

Ludke reflects as he approaches last laps Speedway star from STC says 2015 is swan song

By NATE WENDT nwendt@shawmedia.com With a few laps remaining, a referee prepares to wave a checkered flag to signal the end of the race. For Tim Ludke of St. Charles, this is a different sort of race, one that has been going on for eight years Ludke is currently in the middle of his final season in the Late Model division at Sycamore Speedway, 50W086 Old State Road, Maple Park.

After being unable to race for one year due to a rule that limits drivers who have won a division for consecutive years, Ludke is ready to bring one of his favorite hobbies to an end.

“I’m ready to walk away from this type of racing,” Ludke said. “Although I’m not ready to walk away from racing itself.”

Ludke is enjoying his last season driving his No. 20 1988 Chevrolet Camaro. Entering the weekend, Ludke had finished as the winner of Heat 1 twice in four races and won a trophy dash once this season.

He stood in fourth place in the standings.

“It’s been a fun season so far, though I have been struggling to come back,” Ludke said.

The struggle has come from getting slightly rusty during his offseason, as he worked

as a mechanic at Al Piemonte Chrysler Jeep Dodge in St. Charles and enjoyed extra time with family and friends.

“It’s not like riding a bike like people tell ya. There’s a fine line between running hard and getting fast so that you don’t crash,” Ludke said.

After this season, Ludke, in his late 20s, wants to move on with his life.

“I want to set myself out and get a house,” Ludke said.

Ludke has had an impressive career since successful beginnings in the Spectator circuit, winning the Late Model division in 2012 and 2013.

He also won the Kane County championship in 2012.

Ludke looked to add another achievement to his racing career over the weekend, as the DeKalb County championships were held at the speedway.

Ludke hasn’t won the DeKalb County championships, but was hopeful that he could get into a winning position.

“If I can get myself a better qualifying spot, then we have a chance to win,” Ludke said.

Some of Ludke’s favorite parts about racing are the people racing the cars and watching them race.

“I love the people. The people I’ve met [at Sycamore Speedway] have become some of my best friends,” Ludke said. “Another great part is the fans. They get extremely

into it.”

Fellow Late Models racer Cory McKay of St. Charles has been racing with Ludke since they both started in 2007.

McKay and Ludke mirrored each other’s praise of each other’s racing style, and also click off the track.

Whereas McKay said about Ludke, “He’ll race you clean and tough,” Ludke said that McKay is “really funny off the track.”

Ludke has been very appreciative of the support that he has received throughout the years.

“I just wanted to thank the sponsors,” said Ludke. “ I wouldn’t have been able to do this without their support.”

The most famous American weathervane is the Grasshopper that topped Faneuil Hall in Boston in 1742.

Early weathervanes of the 1800s often had a cow, horse or eagle. But as more manufacturers started making decorative outdoor iron furniture, unexpected figures appeared in rooftop weathervanes. Indians, angels, Columbia, the State of Liberty and soldiers were popular. So were birds roosters, pheasants, ducks and peacocks - fish, and even a dragon. By the end of the 19th century, a weathervane often had a dual purpose. It indicated the direction of the wind and identified the use of the building from a roof-top pole.

There were fire pumpers with horse and firemen, locomotives and street cars with motormen. There was less need for weathervanes in the 1900s, but they still were popular rooftop decorations.

In 1923, Yankee Stadium had a baseball bat weathervane, while a famous grocery store chain used an arrow with A & P marked on the feathers. The Howard Johnson chain weathervanes had a boy, chef, dog, lantern and lamplighter on the appropriate restaurants, motor lodges and combinations of buildings and Colonel Sanders was on the roof of many Kentucky Fried Chicken stops.

Weathervanes of all ages are very popular with collectors. Early folk-art examples bring thousands of dollars each, and more modern trademark examples sell for $500 to $800. But beware: Many modern copies have been made. A copper girl playing tennis (Victorian Love) topped an early 20th-century weathervane that sold for $6,000. A zinc 1920s vane with the same figure but six

inches shorter, sold for about $3,000. A recent copy of the girl made of copper with a patina sells for $1,595. *** Q: I have a desk that I believe is called a “Boston Spinet.” It has one long drawer and a top that folds back to reveal a fitted interior. The manufacturer’s label on the bottom of the drawer reads “H.E. Shaw Furniture Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan.” Itquite faded on the back and sides from sun exposure. I think it would be better if it was refinished, but my daughter feels it shouldn’t be refinished.

If it’s not a valuable piece, it would be more useful and beautiful if refinished.

What is your opinion and idea of its value?

A: H.E. Shaw Furniture Co. was in business in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 1919 to 1933. The company made Colonial and European Revival desks, secretaries and dining-room furniture.

Because of the sun damage, your desk is worth only about $200 to $300. If you plan to keep it, you should refinish it and enjoy it. A desk in good refinished condition is worth more in dollars than a faded, ugly desk. *** Q: I have a figurine, 4 inches tall, of a rabbit in a ruffled blue apron. It is holding a Jell-O salad on a plate. A banner on the bottom reads, “A Jell-O salad makes a meal.” I would appreciate any history and the value.

A: Jell-O was born in 1897, when Pearle Bixby Waite, a carpenter and medicine maker in LeRoy, New York, trademarked a gelatin dessert. He and his wife May added either lemon, orange, raspberry or strawberry flavors to granulated gelatin and sugar and named the product Jell-O. In 1899, Waite sold the product and name for $450 to Orator Woodward’s Genessee Pure Food Co. He changed the company name to Jell-O Co.

In 1925, the company was sold for $67 million to Postum Cereal Co., one of the first mergers that led to General Foods Corp. Jell-O was aggressively advertised in newspapers, radio and television. By the 1950s, cookbooks and women’s magazines were filled with recipes for Jell-O relishes, salads and entrees as well as desserts. General Foods had figurines based on their advertising to give away to their top

by Sebastian Miniatures of Marblehead, Mass. Your 1954 figurine was made to go with a print ad featuring a similar rabbit and read, “When I’m eating Jell-O I wish I were a rabbit, because then I could enjoy my favorite vegetables in a glamorous Jell-O Salad!”

The figurine sells for $200 to $400 and is among the most valuable Jell-O collectibles. *** Q: During a decluttering binge, I found my old Shirley Temple doll from 1934 or ‘36. She’s in good condition. All of her curls are intact, no crazing on her body, but her blue eyes are cloudy. Her blue accordion pleated dress, petticoat and panties have yellowing. Shoes, socks and pink satin bows are fine. Would gently soaking the dress in a mild detergent be a no-no? I would like to give it to my granddaughter. What is the doll worth?

A: Vintage doll clothing is very delicate. Your doll’s dress is organdy. If it has mildew, brush it off and air it in the sunlight. You can’t do much about yellowing. It can be soaked in a solution of one tablespoon of mild detergent per gallon of water, but the accordion pleating may be compromised. Do not wring. It can cause wrinkles. Man’s wandering eyes aren’t an accident Dear Abby: I am a 58-year-old,

twice divorced, hard-working, middle-class female. About a year ago I started dating someone. He is 63, very helpful and claims he’s madly in love with me.

Occasionally I’ll catch him staring at women’s butts. Last week our family went camping. At least a dozen times I saw him position himself so that he could stare at my 40-year-old daughter’s behind.

As we were packed up and ready to head home, she said she had to relieve herself and headed into the bushes (this is a remote campground). Instead of my boyfriend looking the other way as we all did, he stared and gawked in her direction. Abby, I am devastated.

Herbs and supplements aren’t always pure Dear Doctor K: My cholesterol is high and my doctor wants me to go on a statin. I’d like to avoid medication. Do any supplements effectively lower cholesterol?

Dear Reader: Statin drugs lower LDL (or “bad”) cholesterol and also reduce inflammation.

Together, these effects lower your risk of heart attack.

Various herbs and supplements have been touted for their ability to improve cholesterol levels. There is one general caveat you should consider. New drugs are tested by the FDA for their safety, effectiveness and purity.

However, almost the opposite is true for herbs and supplements. They are virtually free of testing and manufacturing requirements. And, unfortunately, there have been occasional serious problems with contaminants getting into some supplements during their manufacture.

Here’s what the research shows – and doesn’t show – about some of the best-known products: • Hawthorne. The leaves, berries and flowers of this plant are made into medicine that has been used to treat cardiovascular diseases. It may decrease the body’s production of cholesterol, and it may help the body excrete bile, a cholesterol-filled fluid that helps with digestion. Verdict: It may

• Red yeast rice. This Chinese medicine is marketed as a cholesterol-lowering agent. An independent analysis looked at 12 red yeast rice products that claimed to contain 600 milligrams (mg) of the active ingredient. The actual content varied between 0.10 mg and 10.9 mg. Also, one-third of the products were contaminated with a compound that can cause kidney failure. Verdict: It may help, but purity remains a problem.

• Garlic. Some early studies suggested that garlic might slightly lower cholesterol levels. A study funded by the National Center on Complementary and Alternative Medicine looked at the effectiveness of fresh garlic, dried powdered garlic tablets and aged garlic extract tablets. It found garlic had no effect on cholesterol levels. Verdict: For lowering cholesterol, save your money. For cooking, follow the judgment of your nose and palate.

• Fish oil. We know that eating fatty fish lowers heart risks for people with heart failure or a previous heart attack. But a

2013 study in The New England Journal of Medicine found that fish oil supplements don’t have the same effect. They don’t lower heart attack or stroke risk in people at high risk of heart disease.

Verdict: Eat fish instead.

The truth is, “natural” treatments like herbs and supplements are not necessarily better, and there can be problems with their manufacture. Of course, conventional drugs can have adverse effects as well. But it’s rare for them to contain dangerous contaminants.

It wouldn’t surprise me if some readers think I emphasize conventional pharmaceuticals too much. As a doctor, I actually tend to prescribe fewer conventional drugs than many of my colleagues. And I surely don’t believe that the first treatment for a problem should always be a drug.

But I believe that research has led to the development of some drugs that can achieve results that just are not possible with natural remedies. Statins to lower cholesterol are one such example.

Boyfriend’s past cripples present Dr. Wallace: I’m dating a guy who used to do all kinds of drugs, but he has been clean ever since I’ve gone out with him.

Because of his past, my parents want me to stop seeing him.

What can I do to get my parents to realize he doesn’t do drugs anymore? If he didn’t have a drug history, he probably would be considered almost perfect. He’s intelligent, funny, handsome and very kind. He treats me like every girl in the world wants to be treated.

Whenever possible, bring him home or otherwise make plans for him to be with your family. Over time you should gradually be able to put their suspicions about him to rest.

They’re supposed to be the brightest of our young people, but I’ve read that college students consume more alcohol than people the same age who are not attending college. Student drinking has long been a major problem for college and university administrators. There are many reasons for this.

For most students, this is their first venture away from home and the watchful eyes of Mom and Dad.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Since drinking is considered an adult activity, and students want to prove their maturity, they bow to peer pressure. They drink to be accepted.

Fraternity and sorority houses are also easy places in which to consume alcohol away from authorities. In the past few years, many fraternities and sororities have admitted that the drinking problem is out of control and banned alcohol in their houses on campus. The ranks of alcohol-free houses are growing. When the students themselves are doing something to solve this problem, it’s a very good sign.

Dr. Wallace: My best friend is very slim and doesn’t have curves where she’s supposed to have curves. I read in a magazine that teens who are very thin and lack a “curvy” figure could have a serious eating disorder, anorexia, which could lead to death. My friend doesn’t eat normal teen junk food like hamburgers and french fries, but she does eat normal food, such as fruits and vegetables. Last night she ate a piece of pizza at a friend’s birthday party. She even ate a sliver of birthday cake. Is it possible that my friend is anorexic? She’s 14. – Nameless, Augusta, Maine Dear Nameless: Almost certainly, your friend simply has a slender body type and her curves will be coming soon. It would be rare for someone suffering from anorexia nervosa to eat pizza and cake.

This week, we are looking at redoubles. The most common is by responder after partner opens with one of a suit and the next player makes a takeout double.

What does responder’s redouble mean?

First, that he has at least ten high-card points (or a super nine).

Second, that he lacks four-card support if partner opened in a major. If partner opened in a minor, responder probably does not have five-card support.

So, this redouble announces that the opening side has the balance of power. Here are the two key points: After a responder’s redouble, either the opening side buys the contract, or the opponents play in something doubled for penalties.

All doubles by the opening side are for penalties and all passes below game are forcing.

In this deal, South had a perfectly normal takeout double, but was killed. West redoubled (yes, with a minimum), then doubled everything thereafter.

Against two diamonds doubled, West led the spade queen. East won with his ace and returned the four, his lowest card being a suit-preference signal for clubs.

West ruffed and shifted to the club seven. East won with his jack and led the spade nine.

South was in an unenviable position. If he discarded a club, East would have just led another spade. But when declarer ruffed, West overruffed and played another club.

South ended up losing one spade, one heart, four diamonds (East scored his diamond six via a trump promotion) and three clubs to go down four, minus 800.
