Search continues for missing Campton Hills teen On the Web

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The search for a Campton Hills girl continued this weekend, both by police and community members.

Emily Czajkowski, 14, was last seen between 7 and 8 p.m.

Wednesday around Main and 14th streets in St. Charles after walking away from the Pottawatomie Community Center, where she was dropped off at 6:35 p.m. for a dance class, police have said.

In emails Saturday and Sunday, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz wrote that authorities are continuing to check general business areas along Main Street and Randall Road, as well as parks and apartment complexes on the city’s west side.

“We do not have any specific information pointing us to those areas, but in general we have found missing juveniles in those areas previously,” Kintz wrote.

A review late Friday of video taken from an unspecified business on Randall Road did not show Emily, Kintz wrote.

He noted police have not searched the Fox River because they don’t feel there is a reason to at this time based on where she was last seen and the fact she was traveling west.

In addition to donating fliers for the search efforts of a missing teen, Button Man Printing hung two posters of the flier in its downtown St. Charles storefront.

Kintz wrote that Emily does not have access to credit or debit cards that they know of, and there is ambiguity about how much cash she might have. The most she would have is about $200, he wrote.

“We appreciate what the public is doing to pass out fliers and raise awareness,” Kintz wrote.

He asked that community members be vigilant when in such places as shopping areas, restaurants, parks and bike paths in case Emily appears.

Police have said Emily last was seen wearing a brightly

colored shirt, brightly colored shorts and blue, knee-high socks. She was carrying an oversized, furry snow leopard-patterned backpack. Fliers about her disappearance describe her as 5-foot-6 and 110 pounds with long, dyed blonde hair and brown eyes.

People should call 911 if they see anyone matching her description, Kintz wrote.

“We recognize that it may be difficult because we don’t know what clothes she is now wearing,” he wrote.

Amy Santoro, who knows the Czajkowski family, orga-

nized a group Friday to hang fliers about the missing girl. She was out until dark, she said, and she continued search efforts Saturday from her Campton Hills home, where people could pick up fliers to post throughout the community.

“It’s been nonstop the whole day,” Santoro said, describing herself as overwhelmed in a good way. “It’s pretty amazing.

I didn’t expect it to grow this big.”

Staples in South Elgin and Button Man Printing in St. Charles donated fliers, she said.

Mark Burger, co-owner of Button Man Printing, said his downtown shop printed about 3,000 copies and placed two big posters in the store’s windows to catch the eye of motorists stopped at the traffic light at East Main Street and Riverside Avenue.

“She’s a community girl,” Burger said. “I’m really proud of the residents here and all

they’re doing. The support is amazing. I’m just glad we can help out.”

Santoro was clear Saturday about her role in finding Emily – she will help publicize the teen’s disappearance while the police work on solving it.

“We hope this makes some sort of difference,” she said.

Helping her was Lynn Tucker, whose son is in Emily’s grade. As people came for fliers, Tucker assigned them locations to target in South Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago, Elburn and Sycamore.

“Where do you want us to go?” St. Charles resident Kirstie DePaul asked, noting her four kids were also in the car to help.

DePaul said she felt compelled to help even though she doesn’t know Emily.

“She’s loved,” DePaul said.

“She needs our support.”

A picture of the flier is available on the “Help find Emily Czajkowski” Facebook page for those wanting to print their own, Santoro said. She said she would work on establishing a public pickup location in the event that fliers were leftover Saturday. She advised people to check the Facebook page for details.

Families tie ribbons to support missing Campton Hills teen

Supporters chose the color purple because it is Emily’s favorite color and yellow because it symbolizes hope. Co-organizer Kelly McCarty of Sugar Grove said she doesn’t know Emily, but wanted to help.

“The biggest thing is to let [Emily] know that she matters … you have a whole life ahead you,” McCarty said.

spread the word through social media. By Sunday afternoon, they met with an initial group of about 30 people in Campton Hills to start the effort.

Hunter said it was strange to hear that Emily went missing.

“This is the first kid that went missing that I know,” Hunter said.

Steiner, his sister Jordan, 17, and their parents put up ribbons around Thompson Middle School and St. Charles East High School.

Chris Donohue, her 11-yearold daughter, Shaelyn, and Alysia Baker tied ribbons along lampposts on the north side of Main Street across from Thompson.

“She’s loved and we just want her to come home safe,” Baker said of Emily.

GENEVA – Planning the anti-substance abuse event named after her late son isn’t necessarily easy for Vicki Foley.

The annual Chris Walk Night Out Against Substance Abuse takes six months to plan, she said, so it makes missing him that much more difficult.

“But it’s necessary,” she said, noting people need to be shown where they can get help.

Foley, an employee of Shaw Media, said Saturday marked the eighth year of the event, which is held in the month her son died from a heroin overdose.

Held at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve in Geneva, the event featured a 5K run or walk, silent auction, Zum-

ba, face painting, children’s games and demonstrations

by Glowby the Bubbler.

Such organizations as Serenity House, A Man in Recovery and Renz Center also had a presence at Chris Walk.

Together, Foley said, they are “fighting this cause.”

Proceeds from Chris Walk will support organizations or programs that have similar missions, Foley said, noting the board chooses the beneficiaries after the event.

About 30 volunteers helped with this year’s event, which also included appearances by Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell and U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano.

Spring captures tourney again

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – It took 30 years for Randy Spring to return to Sunday’s St. Charles Men’s Golf Tournament Championship flight title match.

So it only seemed natural that the round, played at Pottawatomie Golf Course, would need more than the regulation number of holes to determine if Spring or Dan Pessetti would be the winner.

Spring, taking the advice of his caddy and son, Chris, focused on his drives to win the 19th hole and the championship title of the match play tournament, 1 up.

The golfers played the 368yard, par 4 sixth hole for the playoff round.

Spring put the ball on the green in two shots.

“As you get tired, your legs get tired. Chris just reminded me to maintain good posture in the drive so I stood up a little straighter and hit a good drive,” Spring said. “We did the same thing on the wedge shot.”

Pessetti needed three strokes. His second drive landed in a sand trap just left of the green.

“At the tee, I was just about to hit my drive when I look down and in the middle of my backswing, I thought, ‘Man that ball looks like it is teed up too high and then I popped it high left,” Pessetti said. “At that point, I knew I could recover. When I pulled the shot into the trap I got a little deflated. At that point ... unless it goes in the hole, it’s over.”

Spring sank his first putt to win.

“I left a lot of puts short today, and we just tried to make sure we got that one to the hole,” Spring said.

The lead see-sawed between the two golfers throughout the match. Neither one had more than a one-hole lead. They were also tied at the end of the front nine.

“I don’t think either of us were playing our best today.

“I played in it from about 1970 to 1986. The last time I won, it was 1985 and I was runner-up in 1986,” Spring said. “Because of family stuff, I didn’t play again until last year. I got beat in the semifinal.”

B-flight top honors went to Carl Masters, who bested Wayne Heuertz, 3 and 2.

Jon Quirin earned the C-flight title, beating Ed Blyshak, 4 and 3.

Rizzo, Bryant, Castro: Where have your bats gone?

BY TONI GINNETTI For Sun-Times Media CHICAGO – The Cubs’ need for pitching depth showed all weekend against the lowly Philadelphia Phillies, who scored 21 runs on 40 hits in sweeping their first three game road series of the season.

It showed cynically – if not comically – in the nine inning when catcher David Ross “saved” the bullpen with a perfect inning – and followed it with his first home run in the bottom of the inning Sunday in the 11-5 loss.

It will show again Tuesday when manager Joe Maddon uses another fill-in for the troublesome fifth starter spot as the Friday trade deadline nears.

But the last three weeks have exposed the Cubs’ other problem – slumping bats in the heart of the order.

aside, the corps counted on most – Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Starlin Castro and Jorge Soler – have been on a collective slide for weeks.

“We have to get Anthony and KB going,” Maddon said.

“They didn’t get the full benefit of the [All Star] break [having been selected to the National League squad]. It’ll come back to them, but we have to get them freshened up a bit.

“If we get KB and Riz going, it’ll be very important for us.

“Starlin is part of the struggle too. They’re all [hitting] in that 3-for-29 range.”

Rizzo still leads the team with 16 home runs, but his last came July 7.

His average is at .282, but in the last 30 games he is hitting only .229 (24-105) with two home runs.

Bryant remains the team RBI leader with 56, but his average has dropped to .252.

He is hitting only .187 (20/107)

in the past 30 games, with 43 strikeouts.

Shortstop Castro, a career .284 hitter, has dipped to .233.

He is hitting only .161 (18-112) in the last 30 games with no home runs and six RBIs. Soler, who missed most of June with a sprained left ankle, has hit only .239 (17-71) since his return July 5.

“We have to get everyone going,” Maddon said. “There are a lot of runs being left on the table. Everyone is important, but we have to get those [core] guys going.”

The Phillies completed the three-game sweep behind rookie Aaron Nola (1-1), who was making only his second major league start.

Nola, 22, struck out six and walked two, limiting the Cubs to three hits through the first seven innings before Jonathan Herrera singled and Addison Russell homered in the eighth. Dexter Fowler had homered in the third.

Nola is the 12th starter used by the Phillies, the worst team in the majors at 37-63, but the hottest since the AllStar break (8-1).

ST. CHARLES – Both Championship flight match play semifinal rounds of the St. Charles Men’s Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course needed all 18 holes to determine the winner.

Randy Spring and Dan Pessetti needed to win 420-yard par 4 final hole to preserve their 1-up advantage and avoid overtime.

Both golfers won the last pin, but not without some anxious moments.

Spring, who won the tournament in 1985, and Pessetti will play for the title at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

Spring needed to regain his putting skills to beat top-seeded Alex Hansberger in their semifinal round while Dan Pessetti had to hold off Brian Charles, who reduced Pessetti’s four-hole lead to one on the back nine.

Dear Abby: I am 32 and getting married in a year. My biological father lives in Spain and has never been to the U.S. My mother met him when she was teaching English there.

I was born in the states and never knew or spoke to my dad growing up. When I was 5, I was adopted by my mom’s then-husband.

At 20, while studying in Spain, I located my father and his wife. We maintain a good relationship, but I haven’t been back there, and he has never met my family.

Mom harbors a lot of resentment toward my father.

She tells me he took no interest in me as a baby and never sent any money or letters.

She gets emotional when he is brought up in conversation. He doesn’t feel this way toward her. When I mentioned to Mom that I plan to invite him and his wife to the wedding, she got upset. She told me I have no business inviting him and that she doesn’t want to see him.

At the bridge table, redoubles often double the grief of less experienced players. This week, let’s look at the various meanings for redouble.

First, the rarest redouble, which means: “Help, partner, we are in big trouble.”

Look at the North hand. East opened one diamond, South overcalled one heart, and West passed.

Now North was not strong enough to act, so he passed. East reopened with a takeout double, which West passed, turning his partner’s takeout double into a penalty double, announcing long hearts.

North, anticipating that this was not his side’s best spot, made an SOS redouble. (If he had been happy with one heart doubled, he would have had to pass.)

South ran to one spade, which East doubled for penalty. North made his second rescue redouble, which resulted in South’s playing in two clubs doubled – after an auction lasting 24 calls!

West correctly led his club, attempting to cut down on declarer’s trump tricks.

East won with his king and returned a trump. South won with his 10 and led his diamond queen.

East took that with his ace and led another trump, which resulted in down one.

East had to shift to his spade queen when in with the diamond ace to get the contract down two, which was tough to find. The curious may work it out.
