Having helped out in the Kane County Chronicle newsroom for the past two months or so, Jake Bartelson has completed his summer internship.

Jake started his internship in late May and primarily worked on sports stories.

Sports editor Jay Schwab and I really enjoyed working with Jake. He is a talented person with a great attitude, and we’re sure he’ll do well when he returns to Ball State University in the fall.

Peaches, plums, other fruits being recalled Wawona Packing Company of Cutler, California, is voluntarily recalling certain lots of whole white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, and plums and pluots packed between June 1 and July 12, due to the potential of the products being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, states a news release from the Kane County Health Department.

The company has notified retailers of the specific lots being recalled.

No illnesses had been linked to the recall as of the morning of July 23, but the products were distributed to retailers nationwide, including Illinois, states the release.

Book sale set at Elburn library

WHAT: The Friends of the Town and Country Public Library sponsor a book sale

Creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky GOOD NATURED Pam Otto “They’re creepy and they’re kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They’re altogether ooky…”

Right about now, you’re probably fighting the urge to snap your fingers, hum along, and fill in the rest of the verse with “ ... The Addams Family.”

But, just this once, try substituting – and I know this is a mouthful: “Phalacrocoracidae.” Or, in English, The Cormorant Family.

Specifically, we’re talking about Phalacrocorax auritus, the double-crested cormorant – that creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky bird that is popping up all along the Fox River, as well as select marshes and neighborhood retention ponds.

Most people, upon seeing this bird in our area, do a double-take. Is it a loon without white markings? A black goose that sits in trees? Is it an anhinga, that southern bird known for perching with its wings spread wide?

The answers, in order, are: No. Nope again. And almost, but not quite.

Double-crested cormorants, or DCCOs, in birderspeak, have their own family but are closely related to anhingas.

Both are primitive diving birds well-adapted to their ecological niche, which is consuming fish. But each uses a different technique: Anhingas prowl the depths and stalk their prey before stabbing it from the side with their pointy bill. DCCOs, on the other hand, use powerful muscles and unique webbed feet – the webbing extends across all four toes – to chase after their fishy quarry, which they snare with a serrated bill that is hooked on the end.

Also like anhingas, DCCOs have dense bones, an adaptation that functions like a weight belt on a diver and helps the birds stay below the water’s surface. It’s not unusual to see a cormorant paddling

A little creepy and a little kooky, double-crested cormorants are an increasingly common sight in our area.

Here a juvenile, identified by its lighter plumage, rests on recent warm day. along with much of its body submerged, its neck and head the only parts protruding, somewhat Loch Ness monster-like, above the water.

Interestingly, neither anhingas nor DCCOs bird produce much preen oil – the compound ducks and other waterfowl use to enhance the water-resistant qualities most feathers naturally have. At first this might seem like a disadvantage, since DCCOs end up soaking wet every time they dive and swim. But if you think about it, this lack of water repellency is actually quite helpful. It prevents the birds from becoming buoyant and lets them pursue their prey with greater speed and agility.

The issue is when it’s time to leave the water. Like wet clothes, soggy feathers stay that way for a long time, unless they’re spread out to dry.

That’s where the birds’ characteristic posture, with wings outstretched, comes in. It’s a little creepy and kooky, but, bottom line, it’s functional.

Cormorants tend to hang out in groups, and the sight of multiple dark birds perched in a tree, oriented toward the sun, wings akimbo, can be a little mysterious and spooky. Even raven-like. In fact, the latter part of cormorant’s genus name, -corax, means raven, and the name cormorant is a contraction of the term “corax marinus,” or raven of the sea.

Odd birds that they are, cormorants are not without their charms. Though their plumage is predominantly black, the birds have bright yellow-orange skin on their face and neck. Their eyes, if you can get close enough to see them, are a gem-like aquamarine, and during breeding season the inside of their mouth turns a deep Caribbean blue. It’s also during this period that the birds develop their namesake double crests – wispy plumes, one behind each eye.

Remember how Morticia Addams speaking French would drive Gomez wild? Cara mia! DCCOs also perform a number of elaborate courtship rituals, including wing wav-

ing, water dances and the delivery of nesting materials that can include sticks, vegetation, rope, nets and other debris.

Though breeding season has now passed, there are still plenty of interesting cormorant behaviors to observe – and plenty of places to see them.

One popular hangout is in a dead tree on the east bank of the Fox River in Batavia. Head to the bike bridge between Wilson Street and the dam, and look up from the north side of the bridge. Chances are the cormorants will be there, looking down at you. Other likely places I’ve come across are Boy Scout Island in St. Charles and the retention pond by the Judicial Center at Peck Road and Route 38.

And thanks to alert reader Dr. Walter Thyng, we’re now aware of three cormorants that are frequenting the ponds at Peck and Campton Hills Roads, as well as the pond at the southeast border of James O. Breen Community Park.

We’ve got lots more stories and information to share, but these will have to wait until next week when we explore some of the controversies surround these fascinating birds. In the meantime, I hope you get a chance to see ’em.

Crowds flock to enjoy corn Citizen of Year award given Friday at fest

UGAR GROVE – Vince Turano was more than satisfied as he bit into an ear of corn Friday at the Sugar Grove Corn Boil.

“It’s good,” Turano said.

“It’s sweet and tender.”

There will be plenty of corn on hand at the 47th annual Sugar Grove Corn Boil, which opened Friday and runs through Sunday at Volunteer Park, located west of Route 47, behind John Shields Elementary School.

To Turano, the mild temperatures provided the perfect backdrop for the festival.

“I don’t like the heat,” he said.

The first thing that Ashley Korbal and her 7-year-old daughter, Lillian, did when they arrived at the festival was head to the food booth to get some corn. Lillian also expressed her satisfaction with her ear of corn.

“It’s juicy,” she said.

During Friday’s opening ceremonies, Sugar Grove Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Parson was named the 2014 Sugar Grove Citizen of the Year. Parson, who has been a firefighter with the Sugar Grove Fire Protection District for 42 years, also serves as the department’s fire marshal.

Parson was recognized for his many activities in the village, including volunteering at the Sugar Grove Corn Boil, coaching girls softball for 12 years, helping with annual muscular dystrophy drives, and fire department water fight competitions. He has lived in Sugar Grove for 44 years.

Parson started out with the fire department as a volunteer.

“They are paying me for a job I used to do for free,” Parson said. “It’s the ultimate job.”

Parson said he was honored to join the other Citizen of the Year recipients.

“It’s a great bunch of people,” he said.

Also presented Friday were the 2014 Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Scholarships. Christine Crews and Michael Deja received $500 scholarships. Both Crews and Deja will attend Waubonsee Community College.

Sugar Grove Village Trustee Robert Bohler was also honored Friday for his volunteer efforts with the Corn Boil. Bohler, who has been on the Village Board since 1997, is in the hospital battling cancer, Michels said.

St. Charles Bowl seeking historic designation for it

The owners of the St. Charles Bowl, located at 2520 W. Main St. in St. Charles, requested a historic sign designation for its freestanding sign in the parking lot.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS A sign can be considered historic if it was lawfully erected before Jan. 1, 1966, and has been continuously maintained in the same location since that date, according to the city’s zoning ordinance.

The freestanding St. Charles Bowl sign has been a fixture in the parking lot outside the business at 2520 W. Main St. since it opened in October 1961, said Toni McGarry, St. Charles Bowl manager.

Without an exemption the business would have had to get a new sign, McGarry said, and that was a scenario the

owners didn’t want to consider.

“The owners are all family; it’s a legacy in the family,” McGarry said of the business and the sign.

McGarry estimates that she and St. Charles Bowl operator Dorothy Heck spent a combined 80 hours researching the sign, including sifting through microfilm and asking various people if they had old photos of the sign. William Manson was able to tell McGarry that the sign was created by an Aurora company.

ployee found a picture in the business’s basement from the summer of 1967 that has the sign in it, McGarry said.

The city itself ended up finding some strong evidence in the form of aerial photos taken before 1966. The aerial photos show a shadow being cast onto the parking lot from the spot where the sign has been since it was erected.

The historic designation request will next go before the Planning and Development Committee on Aug. 11, and then to the full City Council later that month, Colby said.

She graduated from Nokomis High School in 1939.

Marc and Vaughn were married in St. Charles on June 12, 1943, and soon thereafter Marc entered the Army. During World War II, he was an ambulance driver with Battalion A. His troop ship landed two weeks after D-Day, and he proceeded to follow General Patton across Europe. Vaughn worked in a food processing plant in Salinas, California, while her husband was in Europe.

After the war the couple returned to St. Charles, where they raised their two daughters.

Marc graduated with a B.A. degree from Aurora University in Aurora in 1949.

After graduation he began his 40-year career with John Hancock Financial Services and over time

held the positions of insurance agent, broker and district manager. Vaughn worked for AT&T/ Illinois Bell in Geneva, until she began working for the next 21 years as a front desk clerk at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles.

In 1959 the family moved to North Aurora, where they lived for about 10 years. In 1974 Marc and Vaughn relocated to Casselberry, Florida, where they enjoyed most of their retirement years. During his retirement Marc won awards for his volunteer work as a conservationist, and he was an avid cyclist. Vaughn enjoyed the beach and loved to bowl.

For the past 10 years they have enjoyed the mountain views from their backyard in Boise, Idaho.

Marc was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marilyn Marshall; his brother, Milton (the late Dorothy), all of St. Charles; and son-in-law, Andrew Freund of Boise, Idaho. Vaughn was preced-

ed in death by her parents and her brother Joseph Pudenz Jr., all of Nokomis; and her son-in-law.

Survivors include daughter Karen J. (Tod) Pritchard of North Aurora; daughter Sharon (the late Andrew) Freund of Boise, Idaho; grandsons Chris (Adriana) Freund of Boise, Idaho, Sean (Tanyia) Pritchard of Clayton, North Carolina, Colin (Angela) Pritchard of Montgomery and Jody (Sarah) Freund of Kalispell, Montana; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services, including one with military honors for Marc, were held in Boise, Idaho. Donations may be made in his memory to Alumni Relations Dept., Aurora University, 347 S. ST. CHARLES – A business sign with more than 50 years of history in St. Charles might be saved from ordinance restrictions, thanks to the efforts of its employees.

The freestanding St. Charles Bowl sign is being considered for a historic sign designation through the city of St. Charles. The Historic Preservation Committee on July 16 voted unanimously in favor of recommending the designation, said Russell Colby, the city’s planning division manager.

If the St. Charles City Council votes in August in favor of the historic designation, the sign would be exempt from the 2006 zoning ordinance, which requires all freestanding and wall-mounted signs to be brought into compliance by a fixed date. The council has extended the compliance date multiple times, and the latest date is Oct. 16.

The St. Charles Park District is crafting a dugout canoe with techniques similar to those Native Americans used centuries ago for an outdoor learning program with School District 303 called Native Illinois.

The program, called Native Illinois, is part of the thirdgrade Native American stud-

ies and archeology curriculum. More than 1,000 students will visit a variety of stations to learn about geologic time periods, dig in specially prepared “archaeology pits” and experience firsthand what life was like in a Potawatomi village, circa 1750, according to a park district news release.

months, Kania typically will spend about an hour each morning working on the dugout canoe and grab a few minutes later in the day, if possible.

Visitors to the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center who happen to catch Kania at work are welcome to observe and ask questions. Kania expects to have the canoe completed shortly after the school year resumes.

Working with a log about 2 feet in diameter and 12 feet long, Kania used a chainsaw to roughly prepare the tree by cutting it into a workable length and establishing a stabilizing base.

From that point on, however, only hand tools such as axes, hammers and chisels are used to shape the canoe and whittle out the interior space, which can snugly fit one adult or accommodate a few third-graders.

The canoe currently under construction is slated for use in the Native American village demonstration area off Campton Hills Road in St. Charles Township.

Previous Kania-crafted canoes have found their way back to Hickory Knolls Discovery Center as part of their own Native American display that also includes a wigwam Kania constructed.

Part of the program will feature a dugout canoe created by Denis Kania, the park district’s manager of natural areas.

Kania’s workspace for the canoe is outside Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Drive in St. Charles. Visitors to the center can watch Kania carve and chisel the canoe out of a felled cottonwood tree.

The word “dugout” indicates that the canoe is dug out of a log by hand using techniques similar to those Native Americans employed centuries ago, according to the release.

Native Americans typically used softwoods such as cottonwood or pine when constructing canoes. They would use fire to help shape the inside of the canoe – burning the wood and scraping it with a clam shell.

Kania does not refer to blueprints or plans when crafting his dugout canoes; even photographs of such Native American boats are hard to find.

“Once I know what I’m trying to create, I want it to look like a replica,” Kania wrote in the release.

Lewis previously lived in St. Charles, where police and prosecutors allege that he sexually assaulted the victim, a woman he knew, on Nov. 17, 2012.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation temporarily suspended Lewis’ medical license June 26, alleging he had inappropriate sexual relations with several patients and was inappropriately prescribing controlled substances to numerous individuals.

Regulators charged that his “actions constitute an immediate danger to the public” in suspending his license.

Delnor Hospital in Geneva also suspended Lewis’ privileges after learning his medical license temporarily was suspended.

Lewis’ attorney, Dean Kekos, objected to extended media coverage sought by the Kane County Chronicle. Kekos would not say why he objected to cameras in the courtroom, but he said he would file court papers stating his reasons.

Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams said he did not object to extended media coverage Friday, but he would object to an order of continuing media coverage.

“We did not object to cameras in the courtroom when the orders were first signed,” Sams said. “We object to a continuing order which neither party had had a chance to object to yet.”

Impaired drivers risk tragedy The Tri-Cities area is widely considered a safe place to live. A recent homicide in Geneva was the first murder case in town in almost 40 years, and other types of high-profile, violent crimes also are rarities throughout the immediate area.

When it comes to instances of driving under the influence of alcohol, though, Tri-Cities residents do not enjoy the same kind of peace of mind.

Sadly, the police reports in our newspaper often are chock-full of DUI charges, which generally do not attract the same level of public consternation as other crimes that can carry lethal consequences.

That is, until we learn of situations such as what occurred last weekend. Michael Szot, 21, of Geneva was charged with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing the death of another person and two counts of reckless homicide after two friends he allegedly was driving with after a night of drinking in Naperville did not survive a crash into a water-filled quarry. Szot also had smoked marijuana earlier in the day, prosecutors said.

Szot, a Northwestern student, has no criminal record, according to his attorney, but he now faces a potentially long prison sentence and a lifetime of regret. His loved ones and the loved ones of the two crash victims who died never will be the same.

These are the potentially grave ramifications that can happen every time somebody takes the wheel after having a few alcoholic drinks. We might think we live in a safe area, and in a lot of ways, that is true. But as long as so many impaired drivers are on the roads, the potential for tragedy on our streets is a real threat to our communities’ well-being.

Discussion shows promising signs A home builder’s request to add marketing signs near Blackberry Creek in Elburn seemed likely to result in a drawn-out debate earlier this month.

But because of a measured, thoughtful response from the Elburn Village Board, a reasonable compromise now appears within sight.

Orleans Homes sought to install 20-by-10 foot, double-faced marketing signs along Keslinger and Hughes roads. The village expressed initial

concerns about the number of developers who would push for inclusion on the signs.

Village staff members also pointed out that the provision initially allowing for the signs was intended for the original developer, which is no longer in the area.

At Monday’s Village Board meeting, a proposal surfaced under which signs promoting just a website would be allowed. The website, which could be maintained by Orleans Homes,

would supply detailed information for a fee provided by those looking to sell property in the area. The village indicated it will contact the Blackberry Creek homeowners association for more feedback about the plan.

Legitimate compromise can be hard to attain for governmental bodies, but we are cautiously optimistic in this case. Elburn appears to be on the right track to resolving this signage debate in a way that shows respect to all parties.

I am responding to “Too many complainers.” We need complainers. We also do not need stupid voters that vote these stupid politicians in. They talk about the illegals that are coming into this country – the children and their parents sent them. Isn’t that some kind of law that you just do not give your children away to another country?

And as for the grandparents that came, my grandparents came from Europe, and they could not get a job until they learned English. They had to go to school, and they had to pay for it. They did not have the libraries to teach them to learn English and everything else that they needed. We need complainers. We need the right complainers, and the right politicians.

I just read the column “Too many complainers” in [the weekend] edition, and I just wanted to say thank God for that person because they could not have said it better if they tried.

We do have too many complainers. Too many people take for granted what they have because they [were] born here in America. Too many people who don’t remember what immigrants went through when they came here, even through Ellis Island or anywhere else they immigrated. It doesn’t work that way now. And I cannot understand how anybody could deny children of anything. They are the world’s future, and thank God they were able to come to our country. They are free to practice their religion. They are free to complain if things are wrong, but sometimes people do complain too much. Way to much.

I thank God for every day that I have, and I thank God that I was born in this country, and I thank God for all the blessings in my life. Maybe if people thought more about the blessings in their lives, instead of complaining about other people.

Geneva man accused of using guitar as weapon

Mark R. Chroust, 28, whose last known address was in the 1100 block of Sunset Road, is being held on $15,000 bond in the Kane County Jail. A plea setting is scheduled for Monday at Kane County Branch Court.

According to police reports, Chroust approached a group sitting in an outside patio at Cotto A. Legna, 500 S. Third St., about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday and began cursing at people.

An employee told him to leave and escorted him to the public sidewalk. Once there, according to police reports, Chroust used his acoustic guitar to swing at her, but she was able to get out of the way and

As baseball wives, the spouses of infielder David Bote and outfielder Jake Hannemann aren’t waiting until the offseason to strike for equal time.

With baseball teams spending half their time on the road as it is, both couples realize it’s imperative to diversify their experience while living in a new part of the country.

“They’re really good about off days are good date nights,” Rachel Bote said. “We get our

David Bote was sent down Thursday from the Kane County Cougars to Short-A Boise, while Jake Hannemann was promoted one day earlier from the Cougars to Advanced-A Daytona.

She also has monopolized her summer reading, embarking on a quest to read any bit of baseball copy she can find.

That’s what happens when there’s a minor leaguer living in your basement.

In past years, Eric and Rachel Kingston took their four daughters to a few Cougars games, but the interest and acumen heightened considerably once outfielder Jake Hannemann and his wife, Shayli, moved in. It hardly waned during the Cougars’ road trips.

“Now the kids want to know every single night what the stats are, what the scores are,” Rachel Kingston said. “They want to listen when they can.”

Back home in Orem, Utah, Shayli Hannemann receives constant reminders of her parents’ interest in their son-in-law, the leadoff man.

“It’s funny because every night, they’re sitting back home either watching or listening, so we’ll get texts during the game, like, ‘Oh, awesome hit,’ or, ‘Oh, strikeout,’ you know,” she said. “But either way, they’re just always supportive. There’s, like, constant feedback throughout the game, so that’s been awesome.”

Rachel Bote, the wife of infielder and fellow Coloradoan David Bote, gets similar feedback from her family.

Both spouses hope the trend continues in the coming seasons, as their husbands ideally progress through the parent Cubs’ farm system.

Advanced-A Daytona – where Jake Hannemann was assigned Wednesday – marks the next rung above the Class-A Cougars, followed by Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.

But Rachel Bote and Shayli Hannemann could have recited the list as easily as their beaus.

“I feel like it’s hard not to become familiar with all that, just because it’s kind of the talk of everything,” Shayli Hannemann said. “So, I mean, we’re familiar with it, but we kind of just focus on where he’s at, what he’s doing here.”

The fantasies can wait for the backyard, and often do. Jake Hannemann is happy to show Addison Kingston and her siblings the ins-and-outs of throwing and hitting.

The Botes, who stayed with the Robey family of Carol Stream, embraced a full house of players who also included right-handers Zak Hermans, James Pugliese and Michael Wagner. The Botes had their own space and bathroom.

Rachel Bote often visited other parts of the suburbs with her host parents when the team was away, speaking especially fondly of a recent trip to The Morton Aboretum in Lisle.

“It’s been so wonderful. It’s really great, too,” she said. “These people just welcome you into their home and then even more than that – both of you as a part of their family.”

Before his wife moved in after studying at Brigham Young University for the spring semester, Jake Hannemann bonded with the four daughters of St. Charles couple Eric and Rachel Kingston enough that the quartet considered him a long-lost brother.

Hannemann lived elsewhere during the first few weeks of the season before calling the nearest congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – of which he is a member – about prospective lodging.

He followed the same pattern while playing with the parent Cubs’ affiliates at Rookie League Arizona and Short-A Boise last season and now faces a similar call in Daytona.

“We don’t really feel stressed moving here and there just because our church is worldwide,” Jake Hannemann said. “We just call our church up and they usually help out.”

In April, Eric Kingston, the bishop of one LDS congregation on Old Kirk Road, a short drive across the street from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, asked Hannemann to join the family for Easter Sunday dinner. The plan was to discuss placing him with a Mormon family nearby. By the end of the meal, Hannemann and his soonto-arrive wife had the Kingstons’ St. Charles basement if they wanted it.

The Kingston children – Sydney, 16; Kennedy, 14; Addison, 11 and Megan, 9 – quickly warmed to Shayli Hannemann, too. A would-be older sister who jokes and offers occasional wardrobe input, she often took the group for milkshakes after dropping her husband off at the ballpark on home game afternoons.

Countless card games, movies and Hawaiian Punch floats later, the Kingstons figured their girls would cry at the news of the Hannemanns’ departure.

“Our children have noticed, you know, that they have really positive attitudes and they notice how appreciative they are of each other,” Rachel Kingston said. “We’re glad that they’ve seen that in another couple, not just mom and dad. … They’ve not just been part of our family; they’ve been positive role models for good relationships and how to treat one another.”

On a night in which outfielders showcased their arms, the Cougars defeated South Bend, 7-2, at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for a series sweep.

The teams combined for six outfield assists, four by South Bend, as overly aggressive baserunning helped keep a game moving that otherwise was dictated by the offenses.

Cougars right fielder Jeffrey Baez had both of the Cougars’ outfield assists, cutting down one runner at home and doubling another Silver Hawk off second base after making a lunging catch in the top of the third.

“It’s very good, very important for the team,” Baez said. “It helps the pitchers.”

Cougars manager Mark Johnson praised the defensive display by Baez – one of the team’s newcomers – but would have liked to see a little less drama from his own team on the basepaths.

“It’s a good thing in a way,” Johnson said. “It means you have runners on base and you’ve got a lot of action on the bases. …

We ran into a couple outs tonight but we had a couple plays where we were aggressive in the right spots.”

Starting pitcher Ben Wells, making his Cougars debut, needed all the help he could get. Wells was fortunate to allow only two runs in his four innings. He walked five and allowed five hits, but wiggled out of enough jams – thanks largely to Baez – to keep Kane County on course to sweep the three-game series.

“He limited the damage,” Johnson said of Wells. “He put himself in a lot of binds.

That was a very, very, very stressful four innings.”

Cougars third baseman Jeimer Candelario continued his resurgent season after struggling in Daytona during April and May. Candelario went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Candelario has 24 RBIs in 30 games with the Cougars (67-36 overall, 22-11 second half).

“His confidence is there, and it’s good to see,” Johnson said. “Especially when he came down [from Daytona] and he was down in the dumps and didn’t really have any confidence.”

The Cougars’ pitching staff allowed eight walks on the night but relievers Michael Wagner and Zak Hermans combined for five innings of three hit, shutout ball.

“He definitely has a gifted arm, a very live arm,” Aversa said.

“Anybody that throws 92 (mph) is going to catch somebody’s eye. HopeAnthony fully, when Holubecki Anthony gets to that academy they’re going to work on some of the things that are his weaknesses and continue to build on his strengths and really turn him into a complete pitcher. Right now, he’s a fastball kid.”

Aversa said he respects the “business decision” Holubecki and his family decided to make, and Holubecki wished his Knights teammates well next season.

Despite IMG Academy’s reputation as a baseball grooming goliath, Holubecki said it was “a hard decision, for sure, to leave Kaneland,” noting that he never has been away from home before.

Still, he’s optimistic the social transition won’t be too unnerving.

“I think it’ll be all right,” Holubecki said. “I don’t think it’s going to be too tough to

make friends down there.

Everyone’s an athlete there at the school, so you have something in common.”

That will hold especially true for Holubecki’s connection to Geneva’s Nick Derr, a shortstop and Florida State recruit who decided at the start of the summer to transfer to IMG Academy.

Derr also competes with the Elite Baseball Training travel team, and Holubecki said he and Derr already are corresponding about their intertwined futures.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Holubecki said training will begin as soon as he reports at IMG in late August. The academy’s season will begin in February, when snow figures to still cover the ground back in Elburn.

“They’re going to get me physically where I need to be … and then just developing pitches, adding more velocity – they do all of that,” Holubecki said.

Holubecki, who will spend his weekend pitching at a travel tournament in Fort Myers, Florida, will have a little less than a month to enjoy himself with friends and family, then it will be time to start saying goodbye.

“Probably just spend time with people I’ve spent the first 16 years of my life with,” he said. “But now it’s a new chapter, I guess.”

I’m at 120, and my weight’s been pretty good. I’ve been able to keep it down a pretty decent amount. I’m not cutting off any weight right now.

You’re competing in the freestyle portion this week. Have you always been a freestyle guy?

I’ve dabbled with Greco(-Roman), I guess, but I’m not a big fan of it. It’s all upper-body and that’s not really my strength. … The club I go to really enforces our top work, which these turns we learn on top really give us an advantage in freestyle because they’re really different and not a lot of kids know how to defend them.

What was the lead-up to Fargo like?

I wrestle year-round.

That’s all I do. I never really have time for anything other than that. … Coach Bayer keeps us in touch with the sport basically year-round.

Even the kids that do do fall sports, he tries to work around their schedule and tries to get us as much training as possible in the offseason, and I’m really thankful for that.

I realize Fargo’s not New York City, but do you guys have any nonwrestling activities planned?

There’s not much out here in North Dakota. There’s not much to do. We really don’t have much time, anyway.

When the school year ended, Anthony Holubecki barely had heard of IMG Academy.

A lot changed, and quickly, for the Kaneland fireballer, who announced Thursday that he’s transferring to the prestigious developmental academy in Bradenton, Florida this fall.

Holubecki pitched in Florida at a travel tournament in early June. Shortly thereafter, Holubecki and his family heard from IMG Academy student-athlete advisor Jason Elias, and a visit to IMG was arranged.

“Right away, I didn’t really know what it was about until I went on a visit down there, and then I really figured it out,” Holubecki said.

“I know it’s a big change but it seems like a good one.”

IMG Academy’s website notes a long line of eventual Major League Baseball players who trained at IMG Academy. Holubecki, a high school junior who has made a college verbal commitment to Notre Dame, hopes to join that club in the coming years.

“It was a big decision, but this is what I want to do,” Holubecki said. “I want to go into Notre Dame as a freshman and make an impact or be ready for the MLB Draft in 2016.”

The 16-year-old Elburn resident brought uncommon velocity to the mound as a high school underclassman.

He has maintained a busy mat schedule since, both through workouts from Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer as well as his offseason club, the Naperville-based Overtime School of Wrestling. This week, Winkle is competing with Team Illinois at the famed Fargo (North Dakota) Nationals. Love slipping away; Cavs entice Wolves

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Tom Thibodeau was leaving for Las Vegas this weekend, as the Bulls coach is now getting ready to be an assistant for USA Basketball for the next six-plus weeks.

Six weeks to possibly make sure that Derrick Rose’s knees won’t betray him, if the point guard even makes Team USA. And maybe, just maybe, more than enough time for Thibodeau to get over the fact of finishing first runner-up in both the Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love sweepstakes.

All those good feelings the Bulls had a few days ago in the wake of upping the ante to Minnesota with a “significant offer” for the threetime All-Star have already started to subside, as the Cleveland Cavaliers continued to show signs of taking the

lead in teaming LeBron James and Kyrie Irving with Love.

According to a Timberwolves source Friday, the high ceiling of Cavs No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins, as well as the likes of 2013 No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett and future top draft picks, is becoming more tempting for coach/ president of basket- Kevin Love ball operations Flip Saunders.

“It gives [Saunders] a chance to mold the team how he wants it,” the source said.

It would also give Saunders a longer rope to work with. Call it extra job security.

The Sun-Times reported that the Bulls offered Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott, “as well as a few other as-

sets” on Wednesday. According to Sheridanhoops.com, Nikola Mirotic was also included in the package, but that was still unconfirmed by sources.

With Mirotic, McDermott and Wiggins all signing their rookie deals within the last week, and NBA rules not allowing teams to trade newly signed rookies for 30 days, Saunders obviously has time to make a decision. But with Wiggins starting to intrigue Minnesota more and more, as well as the Cavs reportedly looking to get a third team involved in the deal to try and sweeten the pot, it’s just not looking good for general manager Gar Forman and Thibodeau at this point.

It didn’t help that Anthony spoke for the first time since turning down the Bulls, telling ESPN.com that, “I was flip-flopping. It was hard. It was Chicago, but then after I met with L.A., it was L.A. But it came back to

And it translates to games because there’s music before games.”

Bears defensive end Jared Allen made his presence felt Friday on the first day of training camp in Bourbonnais. with drastic improvement.

“The identity of the unit is the collective whole – it’s never one guy,” Allen said. “It’s Lance (Briggs), Peanut (Tillman), it’s that collective whole.

The identity is going to be how fast we fly around, how hard we

hit, creating turnovers. That’s been the identity of the Bears’ defense: stopping the run. We got away from that, but like I said, it’s a different year. “[Turning things around] isn’t going to be one person. ...

It’s going to be the energy of each individual and what they bring to the table.”

But make no mistake. Allen will be part of that as evidenced during Friday’s training camp debut when he displayed what kind of leader he can be. And although the defensive turnaround won’t solely be on Allen’s shoulders, he will be key to establishing what happens up front and how it translates to the defense’s performance as a whole.

He didn’t waste any time putting his intentions on display.

“I thought Jared set the tone defensively with the guys up front right from the start of practice,” Coach Marc Trestman said. “You watch the way they’re moving, they move to the ball. They really made an effort to show the guys how to do it. “[Allen] not only started

fast, but he finished strong.”

Trestman characterized Allen as persistent and likeable.

Linebacker Shea McClellin said Allen has been a welcome addition to the locker room, helping set an example for what kind of effort will be required to establish the identity Allen spoke of.

But as good of a start as Friday was, Allen said he and his teammates still have a long way to go to get back to where they want to be.

“The real test is going to come first, second, third preseason game when we’re still in camp mode – and can those young guys handle that grind?”

Allen said. “Can you handle the fact you might get two reps and those two reps have to be worth something?

“Like I said, we’ve got some talented guys. When the pads get on we can judge more harshly. But I try not to tend to put my stamp of approval or disapproval on something until I’ve seen them in a game atmosphere, see them go against the run, see if they can handle the workload eventually with the way the season is.”

The Bears’ first-round draft pick wasted no time making his presence felt in Bourbonnais on Friday, making a superb interception on his first play in 11-on-11s. Fuller got a lightning-quick break on Jordan Palmer’s quick pass, driving in front of the receiver and securing the takeaway and first highlight of training camp.

“That definitely helps build your confidence up,” Fuller said of the athletic interception. “But like I said, this is a humbling game – you can’t get complacent – you have to continue coming out here, work

BOURBONNAIS – The fans who stood four-deep behind a rope Friday morning had been chanting Jared Allen’s name for more than a minute before he finally made his way in that direction.

At least one admirer wore a Vikings jersey bearing Allen’s familiar No. 69. Others had purchased the newly minted Bears versions, doing their best to make the veteran defensive end feel at home on his first day of training camp with his new team.

Minutes earlier, Allen had joked that he had tried to do his part to win some of his former fans over after hearing a nearby crowd at Olivet Nazarene University chanting his

name. As he jogged by, tossing his gloves into a cluster of autograph seekers and fans, the cheers only got louder.

It may have just been Day One, but it was clear that the Jared Allen Affect has started to sink in.

“I just hope that everyone generally appreciates that I’m bringing more people,” Allen wise-cracked as a wide smile extended across his face. “I’m just trying to get more season tickets for the Chicago Bears.”

Allen was already a popular fixture with his teammates before fans got their first look at him in a Bears uniform Friday morning. Part of an offseason defensive line facelift after a forgettable 2013 season, Allen said Friday that he can’t do anything about last year’s defensive struggles.

Allen is more concerned with being part of a solution.

But at 32, Allen stressed that if the Bears do turn things around up front his season after struggling both to stop the run and to pressure the quarterback, it won’t be simply because he is now one of the faces of the unit charged

The team had a successful week qualifying for Nationals with their team routine, as well as receiving a super spirit stick. I’ll never lend my voice to those clamoring for year-round school. For so many reasons. Among them is the fact that summer is a great time for learning. You know, about all of that “other” stuff we hope they’ll learn: how to rest, how to find and feel joy, and how to help.

Sure, they can get small doses of these lessons throughout a year chock-full of school and other activities, but it’s just not the same. When you have time to really absorb a lesson, the learning includes a shift in perspective, I think, which can yield perhaps the greatest lessons of all.

Such has been the case for my kids, and me, this summer.

For example, last month, we got to help Grandma downsize a bit during our visit back east. Noah and Holly are at that glorious age where they can really be counted on to pitch in, and with real muscle and common sense, too. So, among other jobs she’d not looked forward to, they helped her to clean out her garage. That expression “many hands make light work” couldn’t be truer than when you’re helping someone to move on from a beloved home of more than three decades. When Holly swept out the last of the dust it occurred to me that it’s not just the “stuff” that gets sorted, culled or moved (and there wasn’t that much “stuff,” to be honest,

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose as Mom isn’t much of a packrat). Other “stuff”gets sifted, too, memories, among them. Many hands sure do help, at times like these. And you get to make new memories in the process.

Good stuff.

Holly pitched in, again, as she and I helped one of my best friend’s sisters prepare her home for an estate sale (my friend died, a while back), happening this weekend. This job was right up Holly’s alley, as she’s a garage-sale machine, this kid (having helped with ours), so I knew she’d be a huge help. She kept me on task, in fact, if I’m honest, as I spent most of my time wading through 20 years of my friend’s various teaching materials and sorting her many books (my friend was a reading specialist, children’s author and critique buddy of mine).

I nearly fell into a rabbit hole or two, whenever I stumbled over my friend’s notes on her picture books in progress, but Holly kept me on task with her special brand of good humor and at least one near-wrestling match.

Good times.

She and Noah got a good dose of perspective at home, this summer, as well.

During some work in our bathroom (our leaky-tub saga finally ended!) we lived without our only shower for a week and a half, so we had to trek back and forth to the gym for showers (may as well work out while you’re there, so we did that, too) while our chronically-leaky tub and tile were demolished and replaced. Having to go an extra mile to get a shower is hardly comparable to life on the streets, but the inconvenience taught us all a good lesson. We still had someplace to go, but what if we didn’t, we wondered?

So many don’t.

As for the work itself, Noah and his buddy Charlie began the process by demolishing the old tile. Hammers, gloves and safety glasses onboard, they made an awesome dent in the job, which Todd finished, which saved us from paying someone else to do that part of the job. Nice work, boys! (That was a workout, in and of itself. I bailed pretty quickly, after a few swings of the hammer, as my swing just didn’t do the trick.)

And then we painted the fence.

Finally. Part of it was rebuilt last fall following a car accident that resulted in a van crashing into it, so we had to paint the whole thing.

Must-have plants for the cottage garden Characterized by its informality, a cottage garden often combines flowers, herbs and edibles together in beds that overflow with an abundance of fragrant blooms in soft pastel shades.

Pebbled paths meander and wind their way through and around, and sometimes even under, shrubs and flowering trees, perennials and trailing vines. Gates and arbors make eye-catching focal points, and provide additional surface area for roses, perhaps the mainstay of the cottage garden, and other flowering climbers to ramble up and over.

Here in the Midwest, blackeyed Susans, purple coneflowers, daisies and daylilies thrive.

They’re reliable growers with a long bloom season, and they fit

LEARNING TO GROW Sarah Marcheschi beautifully in a cottage garden setting. Hydrangeas, peonies, cosmos, pansies and clematis all serve to enhance the motif, as well. In addition to these, there are just a few key plants that no self-respecting cottage gardener should be without.

• Hollyhocks. Among the most quintessential of the cottage garden ornamentals, hollyhocks are sweet and friendly and they add the perfect note of whimsy to the landscape. Their tall spires billow over the rest of the garden – they can reach a height of 8 feet – and are available in an array of colors that

look lovely when grown along a fence or against the side of the house. Sun-loving and easily grown from seeds, hollyhocks are biennial, which means they grow foliage the first summer, flower the second, and die in the fall. Fortunately, they are aggressive re-seeders, so once established they will provide you with continuous blooms year after year.

• Delphinium. If hollyhocks are the charming and pretty party host, waving softly on the breeze, holding court at the punch bowl and beckoning passersby to drop in, then delphiniums seem just a bit more reserved, and are often to be found standing demure and shy at the edge of the crowd.

“Why do I have to do this?” One of my offspring groaned, the day we began.

“It’s what you do, when you have the luxury of having a home. You take care of it. If you’re able, you pitch in,” I said. “Be glad you’re able.”

Todd did a lion’s share of the work, but by the third day, when I toiled over the front gate – after scraping every last bit of loose paint and wiped it down and painted most of the surfaces – when the sun was high in the sky and the humid, 90-degree-plus heat threatened to wipe me out, I impulsively took a little break and collapsed in a giddy, sweaty heap on my front lawn while everyone else was out back, painting the gate to our driveway.

Feeling guilty – and more than a little worried that my neighbors would think I’d had a heart attack and call 911 – I stretched out with my paintbrush, still loaded with paint, and did what I could. It’s not pretty, but it’s done.

Next week? Who knows, but I think I’m putting my feet up. But first, a bath in my new tub.

Loving hands sift through living memories

• PLANTS Continued from page 31 Perhaps best known for their exceptional blue spikes, delphiniums are actually grown in a range of colors from white to pale pinks and purples.

They are perennials and will grow in full to part sun, appreciate a cool, moist climate and protection from winds.

• Foxglove. Another biennial, foxglove is a standard in the cottage garden. Producing tall spires covered in speckled tubular shaped flowers above a mound of basal leaves, foxgloves resemble something found in a fairytale, and they’ll happily turn a shady corner of the backyard into the proverbial enchanted woodland.

They can be grown in a variety of colors including pinks and purples, yellow, white, and red, and are low maintenance re-seeders that multiply quickly. Plant foxglove in spring or fall, or sow from seeds in early summer.

• Climbing Rose. What would a cottage garden be without a climbing rose?

Whether trained along a fence, over an arbor, or even up and around the doorway, climbing roses perfectly represent the balance between artful

design and unpredictability that sets the mood in this garden. And they’re showstoppers, too.

There are a number of varieties that perform well in the Midwest, including the Canadian Explorer series, a group of extremely hardy roses (to Zone 3 or 4), with names like William Baffin, Alexander Mackenzie and John Cabot. Once established in the garden, these roses will need to be pruned and trained to climb a structure. Plant roses in full sun in the spring or early fall.

Now, even if you don’t live under a thatched roof at the end of a cobbled lane, or are, sadly, still without the white picket fence, a romantic and fanciful cottage garden is easy to create by incorporating some of these time-honored selections into the landscape.

Take things a step further by adding an eclectic mix of vintage furniture, a couple of well-placed birdbaths or feeders, and maybe a croquet set or a pie cooling on a windowsill. Just keep an eye out for witches with shiny red apples.

In ‘Magic,’ Woody Allen’s quirks shine through

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Emma Stone and Colin Firth bring an amusing vitality to a movie, especially when they’re engaged in quick-witted sparring. So watching them try to outmaneuver each other in “Magic in the Moonlight” – Woody Allen’s latest period romantic comedy – is delightful.

Firth once again plays a charming twerp. He’s positively Darcy-esque as the confoundingly appealing Stanley, an abrasive Brit who most people know as Wei Ling Soo. The renowned magician can make an elephant disappear and obscure his true identity under loads of eye makeup, a kimono and a faux Fu Manchu mustache. Offensive? Yes, but keep in mind that the year is 1928.

After a performance in Berlin, Stanley is visited by an old friend, Howard (Simon McBurney), who needs a favor.

Howard is friends with a wealthy family living in the South of France, and it appears the matriarch is being swindled by a con artist who claims to be a spiritual medium. But Howard – also a magician – can’t figure out how she’s levitating candles and unloading trivia about the family that no one else knows.

Stanley, who fancies himself the greatest of debunkers, can hardly contain his excitement as he sets off for

France to expose Kalamazoo native Sophie Baker (Stone) and her stage mother (Marcia Gay Harden). The only problem is that Sophie is so darn adorable, with her winning smile and upbeat attitude, that no one wants to doubt her. The heir to the family’s fortune, Brice (Hamish Linklater), even wants to marry her, and he lets her know by constantly, painfully serenading her with his ukulele.

Watching the unruffled Sophie spar with Stanley is great fun. He doesn’t believe in God, much less a spirit world, and he has no intention of sugarcoating his feelings. But he also can’t hide his surprise at how much Sophie knows about him and his family. Could she be the real thing?

The biggest problem with “Magic in the Moonlight” is its origins. If it were made by any other director, it would be heralded as a first-rate romantic comedy. But anyone who has seen a couple Woody Allen films will recognize aspects of his other movies, from the depressive protagonist and the mysticism, to the European vacation setting and the existentialism. Let’s hope the auteur is as good at recycling his plastic bottles as he is at reusing plot points.

The most blatant of the revisited motifs is the May-December romance.

There’s a nearly 30-year age difference

between Firth and Stone, and while both characters are alluring in their own ways, the discrepancy can prove distracting. Granted, the gap isn’t as egregious as in some of Allen’s other movies (four decades separate Larry David and Evan Rachel Wood, stars of “Whatever Works”), but let’s just say that Firth seems like a guy who looks good for his age – until he’s next to a woman so impeccably youthful, she’s the face of Revlon. That Sophie appears to be more taken with Stanley than he is with her practically begs for an eye roll.

If you can overcome that obstacle, “Magic” has many pleasures: good dialogue, a jazzy score, an element of mystery and an idyllic, summery setting. It’s also beautifully shot using what appears to be a lot of natural light.

You can practically feel the heat of the sun emanating from the screen.

It may not be wholly original or without its flaws, but “Magic in the Moonlight” offers a pleasant vacation from reality. And what more could you want from a summer movie?

• “Magic in the Moonlight” received two-and-a-half stars out of four stars.

The film is rated PG-13 and contains a brief suggestive comment and smoking throughout. It runs 98 minutes.

Watch out for excess butter, sugar and salt when eating out Dear Doctor K: I travel regularly for work, so I have to eat out a lot. Could you give me some strategies to make restaurant meals healthier?

Dear Reader: Eating out can ruin even the healthiest diets.

That’s because restaurants – and not just fast-food joints – tend to overdo the butter, sugar and salt. I spoke to registered dietitian Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition for Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She assured me that you can enjoy a meal (or several) on the road if you follow a few handy tips: • Watch the portions.

Restaurant entrees tend to be large enough to feed at least two people. When my wife and I go to a restaurant, we use one of two strategies: Strategy No. 1: We jointly choose the entree and split it.

Usually we split an appetizer, too.

Strategy No. 2: If strategy No. 1 threatens marital harmony, we each choose our own entree and ask the wait staff to wrap up half of it to take home. I also employ strategy No. 2 when I’m

• Hold the butter and salt.

Many menu items contain hidden butter and salt. Ask your server how a meal is prepared before you order. If something is typically prepared in butter, ask for it to be steamed or broiled without added butter, or sauteed in olive oil instead.

Likewise, ask that the chef go easy on added salt.

• Don’t be shy about asking for substitutions. The restaurant staff will likely be used to switching out white rice for brown and white pasta for whole-wheat pasta. Request a small salad or green vegetable instead of onion rings, or black beans instead of French fries.

• Ask your waiter for sauce to be served on the side. Instead of drizzling the sauce on your meal, dip your fork into the sauce first, and then place your fork and its few drops of sauce onto a bite of food. That way you’ll get to experience the taste

without overdoing it. The same thing works for salad dressing.

• Plan ahead. Look at the restaurant’s menu online, or call ahead and ask questions.

Decide what you’re going to order ahead of time. That way, you won’t look at the menu and be tempted to order a more indulgent entree when you arrive.

Sound silly? It works.

• Eat slowly. Why? The daily recommended calorie intake for men and women is 2,700 and 2,100 calories, respectively. It’s not unusual for a restaurant entree to have more than 3,000 calories. A meal doesn’t start to reduce our appetite for 15 to 20 minutes. It is easy, particularly when you’re hungry, to down an entire meal in 15 to 20 minutes.

It will be finished before you feel full. So eat slowly, stop eating when you start to feel full, and ask the wait staff to pack up what’s left. And now you have another dinner to enjoy at home.

Girl has trouble dumping new boyfriend for old one Dr. Wallace: Ashley and I had been seeing each other for over six months, when she met another guy and decided that she wanted to break up with me to go out with this other guy. She started to get serious with him after we broke off our relationship.

About two weeks ago, I saw Ashley at a party and she came over to me, and since her boyfriend wasn’t there, we had a long talk and she told me that she really still loved me. She said she wanted us to get back together again, and I told her I thought it was a great idea. She said she would break up with her boyfriend the next day and that she would contact me then. We kissed and it was just like old times when we were going out together.

After a week passed and she didn’t contact me, I called her. I asked when we were getting back together and she said that she’d like to see me, but that she hasn’t been able to get the courage to dump her boyfriend just yet.

At the bridge table, leads are very important. And not only do you have to lead the right suit, but you must also be careful which card you select.

In this deal, South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond eight. How should East plan the defense?

North’s two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, guaranteeing at least four-card heart support and game-forcing values. South rebid four hearts to show a minimum opening bid and no singleton or void.

West led a diamond because that suit was stronger than his clubs.

East knew that his partner’s lead was top of nothing. And it couldn’t be a singleton, because that would have given South five diamonds and a singleton or void, which he had denied in the auction. Also, now dummy had diamond winners on which South could discard losers.

East realized that his side had to take, in order, one diamond, one spade and two clubs. But how to get West to win his spade trick and shift to a club?

At trick two, East carefully led the spade nine, the high card in principle denying an honor in the suit. West got the message and defeated the contract.

If East had led the spade two, West would have probably put in a lower spade to force out dummy’s king, or won with his ace and returned the suit.

Remember, a low lead from length expresses an interest in trying to win tricks in that suit.

Prayer of the Petition: That if the Court, after hearing, finds the Petitioners have satisfied the requirements of 70 ILCS 705/16, the Court enter an order certifying to the proper election officials the question of whether the Territory shall be transferred from the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District to the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District, and that such officials submit the question at the November 4, 2014 general election in accordance with the general election law; that in the event a majority of the votes cast upon the question shall be in favor of the transfer, the Court enter such additional orders as may be necessary to effectuate such transfer in accordance with 70 ILCS 705/16; and that the court provide for other relief as is just and equitable.

Date/Time/Place of Public Hearing: August 11, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Courtroom 110 of the Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third Street. Geneva, IL 60134.

Opportunity to be Heard: All property owners in the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District may file objections and may appear and contest the petition. Objectors and petitioners may offer competent evidence in support of their position. Any person residing in or interested in any property located in the Territory shall have an opportunity to comment on the boundary of the Territory and make suggestions regarding the boundary of the Territory.
