very day is different for me, which is just the way I like it.

This also means that some days are more interesting than others. Luckily, most of my days are interesting in some way or another. But one day last week, I photographed something completely new for me.

As word spread throughout our newsroom that a man had es-

caped the custody of Elgin Mental Health Center staff while he was being transported to Lake County for a court hearing on prior felony charges, we thought about how that would affect the residents of the Kane County Chronicle coverage area and whether it would be necessary for me to go to the scene. With a hole in my schedule, I jumped in my car and

headed to the corner of Seneca Street and Dundee Avenue in Elgin.

There were police and SWAT-type vehicles everywhere.

Just as I arrived, a press conference was being given, and the news was that the man was still missing.

Within a few minutes, I noticed a group of camouflaged officers, with very large guns, blanketing

part of the neighborhood. I photographed them from across the street with another photographer as the officers surveyed a few homes. Needless to say, the residents of the neighborhood were on edge. The man, Jesse Vega, was found later that afternoon.

Casting call set for ‘The Groom Has Cold Feet’

District 303 becomes mobile

Starting Aug. 4, a free District 303 mobile app will be available to download for Android and Apple devices.

Search “CUSD 303” in the Apple App Store or Google Play and select “Install.”

Users can access news from the district and individual schools, and they will have the option to set up custom notifications about such topics as grades, attendance and lunch account balances, according to the district.

Jim Blaney, school and community relations director, said in a written state-

ment that District 303 wanted its app to be more than a mobile version of the district’s website.

“In the process of developing this app our goal was to make available an app that is truly interactive and fully customizable,” he wrote. “We know individuals have preferences for how and when they want information. The District 303 mobile app allows for that.”

The app also will be tied to the districtwide and individual school parent notifications, Facebook pages and Twitter feeds.

ParentLink created the app specifically for the district. The company also is providing the school system with parent notification tools.

Approved by the school board in February, the threeyear contract with ParentLink took effect July 1.

According to board documents, the agreement includes a one-time $4,000 setup fee and a $2.95 charge a student a year, which equals $39,022.60 for 13,228 students.

Blackboard Connect, a parent-notification provider whose contract with the district expires Sept. 30, charged $3 a student annually.

“We encourage everyone in the District 303 community to download the app,” Blaney said. “We especially encourage community members who do not have children in our schools to get the app so they can keep up with the exciting things happening in our schools.”

Batavia kids make birthday cards for cancer patient Massachusetts 6-year-old diagnosed with brain tumor

By ERIC SCHELKOPF |eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Danny Nickerson of Foxboro, Massachusetts, will be receiving thousands of birthday cards today from strangers wishing him a happy sixth birthday, including some from the Batavia Park District’s Kamp Kaleidoscope program.

Daniel was diagnosed in October with an inoperable brain tumor. Traci Andracki, a director with the Kamp Kaleidoscope program, heard about his story through the show “Windy City Live.”

“All he wants for his birthday is cards, so they posted an address on Facebook that people can mail cards to,” she wrote in an email.

Each Kamp Kaleidoscope participant made a card, and then the campers had a photo taken with their finished cards. Danny will have plenty of birthday cards to open

today. According to news reports, he has received more than 8,000 envelopes and four pallets of toys.

A Facebook page called Danny’s Warriors has more than 30,000 likes. In addition, the family’s GoFundMe page has raised more than $27,000 to help with expenses. Danny was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma in October. DIPG affects primarily children and grows in a way that makes surgical removal

Kids support Project Mobility with lemonade stand

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With a Starbucks a few doors away, 9-yearold Zoe Schirtzinger knew the lemonade stand she was manning Thursday for the Multisport Madness Triathlon Team faced some competition.

But she and her teammates were holding their own: with about 15 minutes left of the four-hour sale, they had run out of lemonade and were low on cookies.

“It’s going really good,” Zoe said.

Members of MMTT set up shop in front of Geneva Running Outfitters to continue efforts the Andelman family of St. Charles started last week in conjunction with the team’s goal of raising money for Project Mobility.

“What is more fun than a lemonade stand?” mother Dana Andelman said.

The 50-cent refreshments last week generated more than $300 for Project Mobility, a St. Charles-based nonprofit that aims to provide adaptive bikes to disabled children and adults.

“Social media helps,” Andelman said.

Two hospitalized after going in Fox River

Wristbands on sale for Sugar Grove Corn Boil

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Two people were transported to area hospitals after a water rescue Wednesday night near Funway.

Batavia and Geneva fire departments arrived at 8:04 p.m. for a water rescue for three people in the Fox River. When firefighters arrived, two of the individuals already were out of the water.

“A third person was still in the water, but we were able to talk him out of the water,” Batavia Fire Lt. Ralph Strange said.

He said the individuals, who were minors, were “impaired” at the time of the incident. Two of the individuals were taken to area hospitals for evaluation. The third person did not require hospitalization.

“Nobody drowned, which was a good thing,” Strange said.

SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove Corn Boil carnival ride presale wristbands are on sale at American Heartland Bank, Castle Bank and Old Second National Bank in Sugar Grove for $20.

Wristbands allow the wearer unlimited carnival rides during specified days and times during the Corn Boil.

Wristbands will be available at the carnival ticket booth for $25 during normal carnival hours and will provide unlimited rides during the unlimited ride times on the day purchased.

Unlimited ride times are from 5 to 11 p.m. today; from noon to

Library board chooses shingles for roof replacement, repair

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva library trustees voted Thursday to use a longer lasting architectural roof shingle to be included in bid requests for its roof repair and replacement.

Most of the library’s roof sections at 127 James St., are in bad shape and need to be addressed, a roof consultant told officials last month.

Library Director Christine Lazaris said the board needed to choose which type of shingle – a three-tab design or architectural – to be included in the bid proposals.

Lazaris said the cost difference between the two has more to do with labor costs than the price of the shingles.

“The difference is really very small and varies with each contractor,” Lazaris said.

“The lifespan from architec-

tural shingles is much higher and is becoming ... the standard.”

Library board member Pat Lord said the city’s preservation planner Michael Lambert said the architectural shingles will last longer.

Lazaris said the library will place a newspaper ad next week with a 30-day time period to put in bids for the work, estimated to cost $330,000 for three sections to be replaced

and $2,000 for two sections to be repaired.

Bids will be due Sept. 3, with the board expected to choose a contractor by the following meeting, she said.

At some point, the board will choose the color of the library’s roof shingles, Lazaris said. Samples displayed at the meeting included light brown, dark brown and darker brown, red, taupe, dark and light green and various shades

of gray.

The display included computer mock-ups of what the library’s roof would look like with four of the colors – Weathered Wood, Slate, Patriot Red and Hickory.

Though board president Esther Steel said she liked Patriot Red for the roof shingles, other board members did not agree.

In her defense, Steel said the city’s preservation planner also picked Patriot Red.

PTO groups, scout troops, police, fire, businesses, sports teams, cheerleaders, running clubs, elected officials, library personnel and clubs are invited to join the parade and wear their uniforms. The most festive group will receive a special prize. Parade participants are welcome to hand out candy (but they may not throw candy).

the main stage area.

The opening ceremonies will commence at about 5:15 p.m.

Opening ceremonies will be kicked off with a “Happy Dance” – a line dance being done in celebration of “Kindness in the Community,” the theme of this year’s Corn Boil. Bystanders are welcome to view and cheer on the parade all along Bastian Drive and feel free to follow the

parade into the festival grounds to view the “Happy Dance.”

Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation of Geneva is raffling off four playhouses and two dog houses as a fundraiser. “This whole playhouse project has two goals,” Svevo-Cianci said. “We want to raise money to work with teen parents or incarcerated parents and children with special needs. These programs are not easily funded.”

The second goal is a public awareness and public service campaign to promote empathy-based parents and family relationships, she said.

“Through our playhouse project, we have been able to bring awareness to our empathy-based programs to 5,000 people, and by September, it will be 10,000 people,” Svevo-Cianci said.

The key benefactor from the PlayHouse Project raffle sales is Family Focus Aurora for its Parents Too Soon program, which includes a new initiative for teen dads.

“Our original goal was $20,000,” Svevo-Cianci said.

“We’ve sold about 1,500 tickets and raised $5,000 to $5,500 so far.”

Svevo Cianci said many who buy tickets don’t want a playhouse – so the tickets indicate that if you win, the house can be donated to Family Focus Aurora or other group.

“If they win and want to give it to a church or a school, we will completely support them to donate it to an organization,” Svevo-Cianci said.

All the custom-built playhouses are donated by members of the Northern Illinois Home Builders Association.

ELBURN – Donald Eugene Hegland, 77, of Elburn, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

He was born Sept. 22, 1936, in DeKalb, the son of Stanley and Theresa (Kissel) Hegland, Don married Eleanor Newhall on Aug. 17, 1957, in DeKalb.

He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1958, and received his master’s degree in physics in 1962 at Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa. He was employed by NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland for nine years, Penton Publishing in Cleveland for 14 years and was editor of Assembly Magazine for 24 years.

Don was an accomplished photographer, golfer, private pilot and certified flight instructor. He loved to fly and belonged to the Nasairs Flying Club. Don was a life member of the National Rifle Association and belonged to the Sycamore

GENEVA – One of the four custom-made playhouses that will be raffled off for Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation’s PlayHouse Project will be compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act. This playhouse will include a wide doorway with a detachable wheelchair ramp, a foldable table inside, a transom window to increase lighting and visibility, cubbies at different heights and an outside chalkboard.

Four playhouses and two dog houses will be showcased at the Northern Illinois Homebuilders Association Cavalcade of Homes at Ashwood Park in Naperville. Playhouses will be on display from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day from Saturday through Aug. 17, when raffle drawings will be held for two playhouses, one of them the ADA-compliant, and one of the dog houses.

Changing Children’s Worlds president Kimberly Svevo-Cianci said the houses will be delivered to winners during the week.

“The houses weigh 1,200 to 1,500 pounds, with real roof shingles,” Svevo-Cianci said. “The houses have been constructed by real home builders, so they are mini-houses built to last forever.”

The houses also will be exhibited from 4 to 9 p.m.

They don’t have long to wait. Everybody Rides – which features a 10-mile family trail ride and 30-, 45- and 60-mile road rides on country roads – is set for Aug. 3. The rides begin at James O. Breen Community Park in western St. Charles. An after-party at the park will feature live entertainment, food, drinks, raffles and games.

Project Mobility is a St. Charles-based nonprofit that aims to provide adaptive bikes to disabled children and adults. It launched Everybody Rides as a way to integrate the area’s “huge cycling community” with those using adaptive bikes, founder Hal Honeyman said.

Registration is $35.

A pre-packet pickup is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Bike Rack, 2930 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles. An optional free bike safety check also will be included that day.

Day-of registration runs from 7 to 9 a.m.

Project Mobility plans give an adaptive bike to another child this year. Like last year, it is running a contest on Facebook. Participants are asked to submit their stories about how the bike would change their life or the life of someone they know. Whoever gets the most Facebook “likes” wins. Voting ends Aug. 1.

tion leader at school provided her previous swimming experience, and the constant diving did not trouble her.

Part of the research involved using beach seines, which involved dragging nets through the sand to temporarily catch and record data about marine animals. Andersen said the best part of the trip was seeing unusual wildlife, such as the four manta rays that visited their boat.

Apart from the flora and fauna, Andersen said the chef

on the boat sometimes cooked local cuisine and gave the students Caribbean meals, including Bimini bread and lionfish. She also said that Bimini had undergone heavy construction to deepen the bay and construct a golf course at the expense of the marine wildlife.

Andersen said while she was still thinking about her college choices, the trip had definitely solidified her interest and pursuit in marine biology.

North Aurora Days to kick off Aug. 1 Book sale and pet parade part of festival

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Those who go to Messenger Public Library’s annual used book sale Aug. 1 and 2 will be able to peruse plenty of books, video tapes and music compact discs.

The popular sale, put on by the Friends of Messenger Library, will feature thousands of items. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 1 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2.

“We get a lot of people waiting for the doors to open,” Messenger Library Administrator Kevin Davis said. “We get a lot of people who want to stock up for their home.”

The sale is one of many activities that will take place during North Aurora Days, held from Aug. 1 through Aug. 3. There are a few changes to this year’s festival, most notably the community garage sales will not be part of the festival.

“The number of people participating had been declining every year,” said Mark Gaffino, chairman of the North Aurora Days Committee that is in charge of organizing the summer festival. “We had 40 residents who signed up last year.”

In addition, he said the person who usually organizes the community garage sales for North Aurora Days couldn’t do it this year.

“We are still discussing whether to do them next year,” Gaffino said.

In the meantime, the village will oversee this year’s community garage sales, which will take place in September, he said.

North Aurora Days will feature old favorites, including the popular emergency vehi-

cle lights and sirens parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Cinemark Tinseltown USA movie theater, at 320 S. Lincolnway, North Aurora, and then head north on Route 31 to John Street. The parade

will go past the festival site at Clock Tower Plaza, at Randall Road and Oak Street.

Some of the emergency vehicles in the parade will be featured in the Chicagoland Emergency Vehicle Show

from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at 800 Airport Road. This is the 17th year of the event, billed as the Midwest’s largest public emergency vehicle show.

For another year, the North Aurora Pet Parade is part of the festival. The parade, in its 32nd year, was started by veterinarian Thomas Brooks of the Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic in North Aurora.

Judging will be limited to the first 100 entries, which must be faxed or delivered by 6 p.m. Aug. 1 to the Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic, 405 Oak St. Forms are available at North Aurora Village Hall, Messenger Library, the clinic’s website, www.foxvalleyvet.net or the North Aurora Days website, www.northauroradays.com.

Registration and lineup for the parade starts at 1 p.m. Aug. 3 at the North Aurora Activity Center at the corner of Lincolnway and State Street. At 2 p.m., participants will parade across the State Street bridge to North Island Park.

GENEVA – Geneva District 304 school board this week approved the hiring of three new middle school administrators.

David Norman was hired as assistant principal at Geneva Middle School North, a 12-month position with a salary of $76,000.

A former special education teacher at West Aurora High School, Norman has a master of arts in curriculum and instruction from Concordia University-Chicago and a master of arts in educational leadership from North Central College.

North will begin his new assignment immediately.

Two people also were hired Monday to fill 10-month dean of students positions, both with salaries of $70,000.

Daniel Jones was hired as dean at Geneva Middle School South. He has a master of arts in teaching from National Louis University and a master of arts in educational leadership from Concordia University.

Before coming to Geneva, he taught middle school language arts and social studies for five years.

Ashley Weltler was hired as dean at Geneva Middle School North. She has two masters of education, in secondary education from DePaul University and in educational leadership from Concordia University.

For the past seven years, she taught high school Spanish.

Does your corporation’s 401(k) measure up?

BLOOMBERG NEWS So you’re ready to retire but don’t have a cushion of money in your 401(k) account. What went wrong? Maybe you didn’t contribute enough, if you participated at all. Or maybe you tapped into those funds prematurely. Or you failed miserably as a do-ityourself investor and forgot that markets go down, as well as up.

As it turns out, the single biggest factor in determining the size of a 401(k) nest egg – which 61 million Americans rely on – is the amount of your company’s employee match. Yet figuring out how one plan stacks up against another isn’t so simple. A recent Bloomberg News ranking that compares the plans of the 250 largest public companies removes some of the opacity of the 401(k) universe and gives employers and workers a few cues on how to improve the retirement savings rate.

The typical U.S. household approaching retirement has only $120,000 in savings, or about onetenth what experts say is needed.

Since the 1980s, when companies started shifting retirement costs from their balance sheets to their employees by ending guaranteed pensions, the new 401(k) accounts were sold as a way of letting Americans chart their own financial course. Instead, too many people have run into a fog bank.

In the Bloomberg rankings, employees can see for the first time how their plan’s matching formulas, investment options and vesting periods stack up against other plans, based on 2012 filings (the latest available) at the U.S. Department of Labor.

Companies ranked high if they matched worker contributions at greater than 1:1, made contributions in every payroll period instead of once a year, allowed immediate vesting and offered low-fee index funds.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

The findings are somewhat surprising. Companies such as Costco and Whole Foods Market that promote a socially responsible image rank near the bottom.

Scoring high were energy and life-sciences companies, with ConocoPhillips ranked No. 1.

Its goal is to allow employees to have 80 percent of their income in retirement – what retirement experts say should be the goal for most people – with the company providing two-thirds of that.

Most employers can’t afford to be that generous. But if a plan fails to match contributions at 50 cents on the dollar at least, it could amount to hundreds of thousands less in savings over the course of a career.

Of course, there is no law or regulation requiring companies to provide matching funds, let alone retirement plans. Yet many do because they help attract and retain talent. Companies that offer plans, moreover, have a legal duty to provide funds that are suitable for their employees’ risk appetite and level of financial knowledge. Some companies even will respond to employee or public pressure when asked why their plans are comparatively stingy.

Until this year, for example, Facebook – which was last in the rankings – didn’t match employee contributions. Two months after Bloomberg contacted the company, Facebook changed its policy.

Companies can do more to help employees work the 401(k) ropes by providing professional advice and offering low-cost index funds. Companies also could do more to promote savings by auto-enrolling employees in lowrisk funds and giving them the opportunity to opt out. Studies show most workers will stay put, taking advantage of the free money and generous tax breaks in the process.

GENEVA – Before they were married, Jake Hannemann and his wife, Shayli, dined out and saw “Moneyball” on their first date.

“It was good. It was really good,” Jake Hannemann said. “And then everything else happened from there.”

Beating out Brad Pitt was just the start for Hannemann, then an outfielder at Brigham Young before joining the Cubs organization. Nearly 11 months into his marriage, he discovers many challenges both at and away from the ballpark.

The Cougars’ more recent newlyweds, infielder David Bote and his wife, Rachel, were married in November. Whether now or over time, the secret to their success doesn’t differ. “[Rachel] is wonderful support,”

said Bote, who has shuttled this season between Kane County and Short-A Boise, where he was re-assigned Thursday. “And it’s great to have her.”

On a given night this summer, the chatter from Rachel Bote and Shayli Hannemann – whose husband was promoted Wednesday to Advanced-A Daytona – mostly remained straightforward. There’s baseball, of course, their surroundings and pop culture – the fun stuff compared to what these women discussed with their husbands before saying “I do.”

Bote and Hannemann both juggle their domestic lives with the demands of a full professional season. Sure, most home games at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark begin at 6:30 p.m., but players must arrive several hours earlier to prepare, then perhaps stay for a time after the final out.

When their wives don’t travel for road trips – Shayli Hannemann had done so more often than Rachel Bote – Bote and Hannemann also know they can’t spend every moment corresponding by call or text. Much of the minor

Single life is still prevalent in clubhouse

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Cougars right-hander Michael Wagner shared a host family residence with married couple David and Rachel Bote, plus fellow relievers Zak Hermans and James Pugliese.

He and his Carol Stream housemates did not all share the same relationship status, however.

While several players have girlfriends who visit during the season, the single life still is prevalent in the clubhouse culture.

Looking for a partner often can become another item on the itinerary, and does not necessarily settle at the top.

“You’ve always got to make sure where your priorities are,” said Wagner, who is single. “You know, there’s a time where you’re not playing, maybe, or you’ve got an off day you can go do some stuff, have some fun. But really, I think, when it’s baseball season, it’s baseball season. You’ve got to do so many things. And if it comes along, great, but at the end of the day, it’s really what you do on the field that matters.”

The Midwest League has a history of matchmaking. Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz met his former wife, Tiffany, while playing with Wisconsin in the Seattle Mariners organization in the mid-1990s.

Their first encounter came at a bar, a scenario that’s commonly depicted when ballplayers appear on film or in literature but is nonetheless a reality.

“I mean, that’s life. Doesn’t matter if it’s baseball players or regular guys that work at Geico,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “They’re still chasing girls, and girls are chasing guys. I mean, it’s the nature of our job. We’re on the road half the time. Sometimes we meet them at home; sometimes you meet your wife on the road; sometimes you meet them back at your hometown.

You’re here more than you’re at home, so it’s kind of irrelevant.”

Center fielder Jake Hannemann, promoted to Advanced-A Daytona Wednesday, roomed with a non-married teammate on early-season road trips before his wife, Shayli, joined him. Bote, demoted to Boise on Thursday, gave the Cougars a second married ballplayer.

“With playing baseball, we see each other seven hours of the day. The other time is what they do,” Hannemann said. “I mean, I’ve chilled with my roommate in the hotel room. I feel like most of them just go get a good night’s rest and wake up and do it all over again.”

“We had to go through adjustments just like everybody else does,” Hannemann said. “I mean, she finds stuff to do while I’m out here practicing before the game, but she comes to every game and supports me. I’ll send her home (to Utah) every once in awhile just to catch back up with family and stuff, because it’s hard.

Sometimes she has nothing to do when I’m out here at practice and stuff.”

Manager Mark Johnson, a former Major League catcher who welcomes his family from Georgia each season shortly after school lets out, lauds Bote and Hannemann’s collective balancing act.

“I commend them for being able to come to the field and go to work every day and handle it at such a young age,” Johnson said. “I couldn’t

imagine being married at that young an age and trying to play a game. It’s tough. The game’s hard enough, and it’s good that their wives are here and they’re supporting them. It’s good to see.”

In a few weeks, Shayli Hannemann will return to BYU and the pursuit of her business degree, presumably by way of Florida. Rachel Bote, a Northern Colorado graduate who has searched for part-time work in the Fox Valley, planned to be back in Colorado, Utah’s neighbor to the east.

Until then, the Cougars – owners of the Midwest League’s best record through Wednesday – keep winning, and clinched a playoff berth in June after winning the first-half Western Division title.

Bote and Hannemann were among the Champagne-doused players mugging for pictures in the postgame bedlam. They’d love nothing more than to be part of a greater celebration once the postseason concludes in September, whether in Kane County or Daytona. The D-Cubs led their Florida State Leaue Division through Wednesday.

Should Daytona advance that far, the Hannemanns’ anniversary falls during the FSL Championship Series. Could an extra ring be in the cards?

“I guess it’s just me and Bote that are married, but it’s normal to me,” Hannemann said. “We still get along with everybody. I wouldn’t say it separates us too much.”

league experience involves male bonding – traveling the country, swapping stories, watching TV, playing cards – and their 23 unmarried teammates sensed their married counterparts understood that.

“I mean that’s cool they’re already married,” outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. said, “but no, just normal guys, still.”

Bote (18th round, 2012) and Hannemann (third round, 2013) entered the Cubs’ system at different times with different expectations, but share the early stages of their marriages as friends.

They lockered next to one another for the first two months of the season in the latest case of marriage by numbers. Hannemann wears jersey No. 4, while Bote was No. 5; the Cougars’ clubhouse is organized accordingly.

“A miracle,” Bote grinned.

On June 10, a roster move sent Bote from the Class-A Cougars to Short-A Boise, where he also spent time in 2013. As Rachel Bote visited family in Colorado, her plans to join her husband in Idaho never took root, as the Cubs transferred David Bote back to Kane County 10 days later. She followed soon after.

First-round draft pick Kyle Schwarber, since promoted to Daytona, took No. 5 in the interim, but Bote stayed nearby when he chose No. 2.

Wasco Baseball enthused about partnership

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Wasco Baseball effectively nurtures its young ballplayers but could do more to mentor them once they move closer to high school age, the organization’s president, Chris Bell, said.

Bell said Wasco Baseball took a major step toward better serving 13- and 14-year-old players through a new partnership with the St. Charles North High School baseball program.

Under the new arrangement, St. Charles North’s program – led by varsity coach Todd Genke – will hand-pick two coaches – one for the 13 age group and another for the 14 age group – to coach Wasco’s top travel teams at those levels.

Bell said players’ dads have coached the teams at all levels in the past, which Bell said works better when the players are younger.

“At the end of the day, outside coaching sometimes helps, when parents aren’t involved, because that’s exactly what they’re going to see when they get to high school,” Bell said. “Mom and dad aren’t going to be there.”

Bell said about 2,000 players a year funnel through Wasco’s in-house and travel programs at all age levels, estimating that about two-thirds of them live in the boundaries of District 303, which includes St. Charles East and St. Charles North high schools.

Players from throughout the area – including many outside St. Charles – also are part of Wasco Baseball, and

The partnership with North should do away with year-toyear inconsistency in the quality of instruction, Bell said. The goal is “not just hoping this year I have a great dad [of a 13-yearold], he played college ball, he knows what he’s talking about, and next year I might not have anybody,” he said.

Bell said feedback about the partnership – announced publicly last week – has been encouraging.

“People are excited about it,” Bell said. “The general feedback I’ve gotten is people are excited about it. They’re glad as a program we’ve kind of moved to outside coaching.”

Bell acknowledged “it was certainly a discussion point” whether the new alliance could deter the families of some players who will not attend St. Charles North.

But Bell predicts Wasco Baseball will remain a popular destination for youth players, and once they funnel into the organization, he thinks many will want to stick with their friends as they move toward their teenage years, regardless of their high school destinations.

“If a kid kind of grew up in a program, has been with same kids, playing travel ball with the same kids for four years, he’ll still have the same opportunity, assuming he can play at that same level,” Bell said.

LOCAL BRIEFS BATAVIA – Batavia senior offensive lineman Jack Breshears verbally committed Thursday to the Florida Atlantic University football program.

Florida Atlantic, located in Boca Raton, Florida, is a Division I program that competes in Conference USA. Breshears was a starting offensive tackle on last year’s Bulldogs team that won the IHSA Class 6A state championship.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com An overnight bus ride to Maryland might not have made for a great night of sleep, but the destination was well worth it for a trio of Tri-Cities boys soccer players.

St. Charles East’s Jordan Moore and Tyler Robbins and Batavia’s Ian Larson were part of the Chicago Fire 17U team that advanced to this week’s U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships. The team was ousted from the tournament Thursday but will head home invigorated by the experience.

“Just getting here, you kind of are treated differently by the hotel and all the people around you, and once you get to the field and see how nicely cut they are, how the event staff treats you, it makes everyone feel special after all the hours of work we went through,” Larson said. “It’s definitely nice to experience

what we did here and how everyone treated us.”

The Fire team qualified for the national championships – which began Monday and will end Sunday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland – after winning the Region 2 championship in Ohio in late June.

Moore and Larson are multiyear stalwarts in the Fire program while Robbins switched to the Fire for the first time this year. The team’s coach, Marc McElligott, has coached the group for four years, and planted the notion of qualifying for nationals before their high school days were through as a long-term goal.

“It means a lot for us,” Larson said. “It’s definitely something we’ve been working hard for. We do a lot of running and fitness after each practice, working hard to get to nationals, and we finally made it. All of our hard work and effort paid off, and it just means a lot to all of us.”

Moore and Robbins are the only high school teammates to play for the team, with Robbins playing at forward and Moore as a center-back. Larson, a Duquesne recruit, plays left-back for the club although he’s a midfielder/forward at Batavia.

The team played three matches in Maryland, tying a top-ranked team from Manhattan, New York, in its first match before absorbing a crushing loss in the final minute of its second match against a California team.

“It was upsetting,” said Moore, a team captain who is considering Michigan State and the University of Indianapolis among his college options. “We had them on their [heels] the whole game. The second half we pretty much were firing shots and taking things at them and then a long ball to the opposite side of the field, a kid drove in and scored in the last 20 or 30 seconds of the game. Yeah, it [stunk].”

Although the week’s results weren’t to their liking, the Tri-Cities trio relished the overall experience as a rousing conclusion to their club seasons. The tournament included a kickoff luncheon at which U.S. women’s soccer legend Mia Hamm spoke.

“I think that we were here for one reason, and that was to try to make it to the final,” Moore said. “Obviously, we got caught up in that, but it was pretty exciting to be in an atmosphere like this with the top players around.”

Now the boys will hope for a better return trip than the one they took to Maryland after leaving at 9 p.m. and arriving around lunch time the next day. Robbins, who is strongly considering playing collegiately at Wheaton College, said sleep was hard to come by.

“It wasn’t too great,” Robbins said. “It was a little bit hard to sleep on the bus with a bunch of guys there.”

Cougars top South Bend GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars defeated South Bend for the second straight night Thursday, topping the Silver Hawks, 5-3, at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Cougars’ Jacob Rogers went 3 for 4 and hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for the game’s final run.

Yonkovich ousted at Chick Evans ITASCA – Kaneland graduate Matt Yonkovich fell in the quarterfinal round of matchplay Thursday in the IJGA Chick Evans Junior Amateur at Itasca Country Club.

Yonkovich, of Sugar Grove, was defeated by Jackson Wetherbee, of Galesburg, 4 and 2. Wetherbee fell later in the day in a semifinal match to Hunter Nesselroad, of Wataga.

MAPLE PARK – Right-handed power pitcher Anthony Holubecki will transfer from Kaneland to Florida’s IMG Academy, a prestigious developmental academy for baseball prospects.

Holubecki, a junior, already has made a D-I college commitment to Notre Dame. He was a Kane County Chronicle All-Area second-team selection last season as a sophomore.

Holubecki is the second high-profile prep baseball standout in the area to transfer to IMG Academy in recent months after Geneva shortstop Nick Derr made the same decision at the end of the school year.

Coach Marc Trestman agreed, nodding and smiling at every word about Lynch uttered by Emery. Lynch has to improve at pass protection, but Emery made sure to mention that every college running back seemingly has to nowadays.

“That’s not the primary thing they do,” Emery said.

To improve his chances, Lynch changed his diet, lowering his calorie intake from the high 4,000s to around 2,500.

He’s dropped from 225 pounds to 205.

off and it still hasn’t really sunk in yet. I still get kind of star struck when I see the top players on our team.”

Lynch’s transformation from Mount Carmel option quarterback to Heisman Trophy finalist at NIU to capable NFL running back will intensify during training camp.

He knows he’s entrenched in a deep competition at backup running back and among othJordan Lynch er special-teamers.

But Lynch’s performances during organized team activities and two minicamps seemingly have validated the Bears’ decision to sign him as a rookie free agent. The Bears brass sees more good things ahead.

Kane County youth exhibit abilities, aptitudes at fair’s 4-H shows KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Hundreds of Kane County youth participated in the annual 4-H projects and animal shows last week at the Kane County Fair in St. Charles.

“For months, our 4-H members work to learn new skills and develop talents, which they then demonstrate through 4-H exhibits and shows at the annual Kane County Fair,” said Doris Braddock, 4-H Youth Development Program coordinator, in a news release. “The 4-H conference judging and livestock shows provide the youth with valuable experience and feedback to continue growing in their project areas.”

Abby DeDina, 14, of Hampshire, said in the release that 4-H Youth Development programs provide her with opportunities she might not otherwise have.

“We get to meet lots of people and make friends,” she said in the release. “4-H has helped me develop good sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership skills, which are also valuable for my sports activities.”

This year, DeDina helped younger 4-H members with their rabbit and poultry projects, the release states. She also is involved in other project areas, including sewing and textiles, and floriculture. DeDina earned honors in

each of those areas.

First-time 4-H’er Caitlyn Bjorkman of Elburn said in the release that the 4-H shows have been a highlight of her summer.

“I just can’t believe it!” Bjorkman said in the release of her strawberry-blonde rabbit. “I wasn’t sure I’d even get a blue [ribbon].”

Bjorkman, a member of the Kaneville Classics 4-H Club, wants to be a veterinarian someday, and when she signed up for an animal project through 4-H, rabbits seemed like a good fit, the release states.

“I’ve learned about how to take care of them, about the different colors rabbits can be, and how to show them,” Bjorkman said in the release.

According to Braddock, 4-H has something to offer everyone.

“With 100-plus project areas, youth can explore arts, sciences, citizenship, personal development and much more,” Braddock said in the release.

Lisa M. Nyuli, a partner at the South Elgin law firm of Ariano Hardy Ritt Nyuli Richmond Lytle & Goettel P.C., has been elected treasurer of the Illinois State Bar Association. Long active in the association, Nyuli was first elected to the association’s Board of Governors in 2009 and was re-elected in 2012. Nyuli is a past president of the Kane County Bar Association, the Kane County Bar Foundation and the Elgin Bar Association. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Nyuli received her J.D. from Northern Illinois University College of Law and her B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, states a news release.

Christopher Beymer of Geneva recently joined Marklund as its new director of adult services. In his new position, Beymer will oversee client services provided at the Marklund of Mill Creek campus in Geneva. He brings to Marklund many years of experience as a nursing home administrator for various facilities in Indiana, most recently working at Lincolnshire Health and Rehabilitation in Merrillville. Beymer has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College and a master’s of public health degree from Northern Illinois University, states a news release.

Hyundai holds nothing back with the Equus. There are two models on the market, the $61,00 Signature and the $68,500 Ultimate.

With the exception of massaging front seats, the Signature has virtually all the luxurious features one would expect in a luxury sedan, including power front and rear leather seats, power rear sunshade and power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, as well as a onetouch open and close glass sunroof. The high definition, 598-watt sound system has 17 speakers and, as expected, the navigation system provides the latest in news, weather and road conditions.

The windshield wipers sense not only rain, but humidity as well. Thus, if the windshield begins to sweat, the wipers clean off the glass automatically.

The Signature model does not have power door closure (driver’s side), forward view cornering camera, a rear seat entertainment system, power up and down rear seat head restraints or power rear side window sunshades to complement the rear window sunshade. Those items are among the extras on the Ultimate model.

But the Signature has heated and cooled seats in front, plus heated seats in the rear. To add cooled seats in the rear, a buyer has to upgrade to the Ultimate model.

The Equus looks prestigious front, sides and rear.

Without reading the badging or noticing company emblems, the full-size, five-passenger, four-door, rear-wheeldrive Hyundai sedan could be mistaken for competitors from traditional luxury car makers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar, Infiniti and Lexus. And the Hyundai product costs $5,000 to $25,000 less.

To mention Hyundai in this company is, perhaps, a stretch, but the Equus measures up to the luxury standard. It is almost a cliche to say the ride is supple, but it is. Plus the steering is solid and the amenities are many.

Company officials like to compare the Equus to the luxury mainstays in the auto industry.

For example, an electronic-controlled air suspension, which helps maintain height and pitch regardless of load and road conditions, is standard equipment on the Equus, but an option on the $72,140 Lexus LS 460.

With 126 cubic feet of interior cabin space, the Equus is more spacious than the $92,900 Mercedes-Benz S550.

Like other rear-wheel-drive luxury sedans, the Equus rides on large and wide tires and wheels, in this case 19inch alloys with P245 tires mounted on the front wheels and P275 tires on the rear.

Weight is distributed 50-50, front and rear. The engine, transmission driveshaft and rear differential provide better dynamic balance for this car, especially in wintry and icy conditions.

The larger rear tires take on a good share of the work load providing for

a smoother and more stable ride. Obviously, the larger rear tires promote greater stopping power, as well as increased traction under hard acceleration. The tires were tested during the week and seemed to do the job and do it well. Disc brakes can bring this car to a stop from 60 miles per hour in a distance of less than 130 feet.

The 5-liter, 429-horsespower, dual overhead cam V8 engine mated to a shiftable eight-speed automatic transmission can propel this 4,553-pound sedan from 0 to 60 mph in a tested 5.6 seconds.

This is an extremely comfortable sedan for long trips as, during the test week, no discomfort was noted on one 500-mile jaunt.

It easily rides over road imperfections. The cabin is quiet, reflecting extensive use of sound-deadening materials, as well as tight-fitting doors and windows. During the test week with two adults aboard, fuel (premium)

usage averaged 21 miles per gallon. The weather was fair, air conditioning was in use and driving habits were conservative.

Safety features above the norm of nine airbags, traction and stability controls and a four-wheel antilock braking system include blind spot detection and lane departure warning systems.

As befitting a luxury car, Hyundai has the company’s usual five-year or 60,000-mile warranty with coverage of 10 years or 100,00 miles on the powertrain.

The warranty also includes 24-hour roadside assistance for five years or unlimited mileage.

For the Equus buyer, though, there is more. Scheduled maintenance visits are free for three years or 36,000 miles.

This includes concierge service, which means a dealership will pick up the car at home or office and return it after the service is completed. This concierge aspect is free.

I love ‘Lucy’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now French writer-director producer Luc Besson likes to make movies featuring strong women. More specifically, strong-willed women who also happen to be in fighting shape.

The list includes “La Femme Nikita” (the source material for the TV show “Nikita”), “The Fifth Element” (Mila Jovovich’s Leeloo destroys the bad guys and saves the world) and “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc” (self explanatory).

With “Lucy,” Besson goes above and beyond what his former female leads have done onscreen.

The title character, played by Scarlett Johannson, starts off as a normal young woman, spending some holiday time in Taiwan, becoming, unbeknownst to her, a mule in a drug-smuggling operation, turning into a victim of the potent, dangerous, and unpredictable drug that’s literally been sewn into her insides, evolving into a super being whose powers emanate from her newly drug-charged brain, then turning the tables on the people who did this to her.

There’s the whole plot. But don’t worry, I’ve given away very little about the effect that watching this film will do to you ... probably something similar to what that drug does to Lucy, except it won’t make you smarter.

The film starts out with a presentation of total confusion.

A dastardly but weak-willed former boyfriend of Lucy’s handcuffs her to a briefcase that he says must be delivered to Mr. Jang (Min-sik Choi, who starred in the original “Oldboy”), a grim fellow whose hotel suite, where hapless Lucy and her briefcase are forcibly dragged, is blood-spattered before we see anything happen there.

She doesn’t know what’s going on, we don’t know what’s going on, but there’s no doubt this is a wrong placewrong time scenario.

The film suddenly cuts to a college lecture hall, where the brilliant Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman) is calmly going on and on about the unfortunate way humans limit their brain power.

For a while, the film jumps back and forth between the informational class (complete with fast-moving images relating to the ups and downs of mankind) and Lucy’s ever-worsening situation.

This is a movie that’s set on

Scarlett Johannson stars as Lucy in the film by the same name. overdrive from the start, and it never bothers to relax.

It’s not for the faint of heart, as its fast pace includes plenty of violence and blood (though not of the splattering sort).

And a lot of information is tossed out for viewers to absorb and understand at almost the same pace as its fast storytelling and editing.

I’ll give away only one important plot point: The bag of drugs – it’s called CPH4, and it does crazy things to you – starts leaking and starts having a physical and – in turn – emotional effect on Lucy. She becomes better, stronger, faster, smarter, more cunning, probably angrier at those who did this to her. The drug sets her on a course of using 100 percent of her brain’s capacity.

Besson’s movie left me so dizzyingly and numbingly senseless while watching it, I can’t recall if Professor Norman said that most of us use 2 percent or 10 percent of our brain power.

What I do recall is that when the professor and Lucy finally meet, and she explains what’s happening, he admits that he has no clue as to what’s going to happen to her.

This is a great science fiction film with an original idea that’s wonderfully played out beyond any reasonable

science fiction fan’s expectations.

A dark comic side of it has Lucy able to control people and most objects all around her.

A wild side of it has us careening through the streets of Paris in a car in which every rule of driving is being broken. Johansson, who, as regular readers of my reviews know, I’m not a fan of, nails this part, coming across as cool, calm, slinky, and deadly. Oddly, that’s the same way she played her alien character in the awful “Under the Skin.”

But this time, working with a visionary as a director, a big budget, and a script that eventually makes complete sense, her presence works perfectly.

This is one of the nuttiest, trippiest, most enjoyably wild movies rides I’ve been on in a long time. Too bad it wasn’t made in the ’60s, when we really needed it.

Arsenal of remedies can help children with allergies Dear Doctor K: My 7-year-old daughter suffers from allergies every spring and fall. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Spring and fall are my favorite seasons, as is true for many people. But for those who suffer from seasonal allergies, spring and fall can be very unpleasant. Weeks of sniffling, sneezing, head congestion, red eyes and scratchy throats make it hard to appreciate the beauty and mild weather.

Seasonal allergies are caused by pollens (from weeds, grasses and trees) and mold spores. These allergens get into the air – and into our noses, eyes and lungs, causing the symptoms of hay fever.

For children, who are generally outside more than adults, allergy season can be an especially unhappy time. There are ways, however, to help your daughter feel better.

With allergies, prevention is first and foremost. Here are some suggestions: • Keep windows closed, especially in your child’s bedroom.

• Keep air conditioners turned on.

• Keep your daughter indoors between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., when airborne pollen is at its peak.

• Get outside on rainy, wet, cloudy and windless days, when pollen counts are lower.

• Have your daughter shower (including washing her hair) and change her clothes before bed.

• Keep car windows closed when you drive.

• Mow the lawn and rake leaves when your child isn’t at home.

Of course, it’s hard to prevent all exposure. Ask the pediatrician if any of these five medications might help: 1. Antihistamines block the effects of histamine, a chemical the body releases during allergic reactions. They are available without a prescription in liquid and pill forms. But these drugs can make children sleepy – or

hyperactive.

2. Leukotriene modifiers are prescription medicines that block leukotrienes, chemicals released by the body during inflammation.

3. Cromolyn. This non-prescription, anti-inflammatory nasal spray can help control nasal allergy symptoms.

4. Nasal steroid sprays.

Available only by prescription, these are sprayed into the nose to relieve nasal congestion and sneezing.

5. Topical eye medications. If itchy, runny eyes are a problem for your daughter, her doctor may prescribe eye drops.

Doctors today have an arsenal of medicines to help relieve the symptoms of allergies. It’s still no fun to have seasonal allergies, but with the distraction of symptoms eased by new treatments, it’s easier to appreciate spring and fall for the beautiful times of year they are.

Principal could solve problem Dr. Wallace: We live in a rather small community and have a rather small school district.

Everyone in town knows everyone else. I will be a 10th grader in the fall, and I plan to go to Oklahoma State University and take veterinary medicine. I’m a very good student and I spend a great deal of time on my studies. I love my school, but I do have one huge gripe.

The school superintendent’s son is a real class clown. He was always talking back to teachers and is constantly making weird noises to disrupt the class. I personally talked with both of these teachers, but they were not able to calm him down.

Please tell me what I can do to get this guy under control. I’m sure he will be in some of my classes next fall. – Nameless, Somewhere in Oklahoma Dear Nameless: If this boy is in any of your new fall classes, share with your principal the problems caused by the superintendent’s son and explain that your education is being hurt by this class clown.

I’m sure this information will not come as a total surprise to your principal. Explain that you have had a talk with both teachers last year, but they did not bring this clown under control. Suggest that the principal visit the classes this guy takes and find out how disruptive this student is.

The principal could solve the problem. Let’s hope that the next year the superintendent moves on to a larger city in Oklahoma.

Dr. Wallace: I will graduate from high school in June 2015. I plan on attending college

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace and won’t have a major problem with college grades. I have been enrolled in college prep classes and I have a B+ average.

My overpowering reason to graduate from college is to earn a college diploma, and it doesn’t make any difference what major I choose. I will enter the family business after college, but since my three older siblings already have college degrees, it is expected that I will also have a degree.

I am not being silly; I’m dead serious. What is the college degree that takes the least amount of effort? That’s the one for me. Any suggestions? My counselor has told me that physical education and social science are two of the more popular and easily attained majors. Do you know of any others? – Carl, Seattle, Wash.

Dear Carl: Shame on you for asking such a question! I agree that you are not just being silly – you are being ridiculous, and unless you change your attitude, you will not be an asset to the family business.

You should plan to do your very best when you enter college and choose a major that interests you and that you know you will enjoy.

It appears that your counselor needs to take a course in effective counseling. The information given to you about “easy” majors by the “professional” was highly unprofessional!

In this deal, for example, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads a fourth-highest spade five?

South is not wildly enthusiastic about opening one no-trump with two weak suits, but he has no realistic choice. If he opens one diamond and North responds one spade, what would South do then? Yes, here North would make a limit raise in diamonds. Then South could rebid three hearts to show his stopper in that suit, North would bid three spades, and South would sign off in three no-trump. That sequence, though, gives the defenders much more information.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, four hearts, one diamond and one club. Given the spade lead, declarer does not have time to play on diamonds.

Realistically, he would surely lose at least four spades and one diamond. Instead, he must hope that the club finesse is working. And there isn’t a moment to lose. After winning the first or second trick with dummy’s spade ace, South must take a club finesse. When it wins, he returns to the dummy with a diamond, takes a second club finesse and claims.

Finally, note that five diamonds is worse than three no-trump, because it relies on a good diamond position and the club finesse.

This person will be responsible for all facets of the Advertising and A/R software and have a firm understanding of all components and reports that are needed to account for the sales in this dynamic multi-media organization.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and at least 5 years experience in a management position.

Candidates must be detail oriented and have the ability to work accurately in a quickly changing deadline driven environment. Qualified candidates will have a thorough knowledge of accounting, possess strong communication, strategic, analytical, and problem solving skills, as well as have a proficient knowledge of Excel. Industry and Vision Data Software experience is a plus.
